Let's get right into it. The NBA Western Conference Finals
started last night and it started with a bang. And
let's just say this, Minnesota, you better get ready because
OKC is coming to handle business. Last night. The final
(02:42):
score was one fourteen eighty eight. And obviously OKASE is
the number one team in the NBA. They're the only
team that finished in the top two that get a
chance to advance and possibly play for a championship. And SGA,
(03:03):
mister floppy Disk is the one that continues to get
the party started when you start to think about it.
Eleven of fourteen from the free throw line. He ended
up with thirty one points, but he did take twenty
seven shots last night, and OKC has now taken a
(03:27):
one o lead harge.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
I don't want you to hate because you might call
him floppy disc.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
He is. He's a free throw merchant. But it works.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yeah, and I believe that he should keep doing it
until they say, hey, man, that's a flop and then
we're gonna get shoot free throws on the other side.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Because there is that route. There is a flop penalty. Yep.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
They're not calling that on him well, because he is
getting contact. It's just that he is showing them, look,
I just got hit and you go back and look
at the film.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
There's no there's no reason to not say he got hit. Mark.
Are you you call yourself a basketball guy? Yeah, you
call yourself a basketball guy. I was just about to say, Mark, listen,
he tried to flop on a couple of plays. They
went and reviewed it and they called it not a foul.
(04:26):
So my point is, you're right, if it works, keep
doing it. My son Michael was shot the most free
throws in the area in his junior and senior year.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
We understand. My boy Tim lights me up every time
I get it. But this is the NBA. This is
the NBA, and if you watch the film and you
look at the game, you cannot tell me that this
dude is walking around like a weeping willow. He is
(05:04):
just floppy, and he gets hit.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
He looks for contact and he tricks people in it,
just like James Harden. It's if James Harden, don't go
to the ground. Like if I'm if I'm the coach, I'm.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Like, hey, it's yay. Can we not go to the
ground so much You're gonna get hurt down there Sga
shot fourteen free throws his team, his team shot twelve.
It's a good man kid. Kid knows how to he
knows how.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
He is exactly That is the best way to say
it is he knows how to manipulate the system.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
He definitely knows how to do that. But he is
possibly gonna be the MVP. We should know a little
bit more about that going into the finals. But on
the other side of the ball, Minnesota, they shot thirty
four percent from the field, which is at absolutely atrocious.
They were fifteen of fifty one from three point land,
(06:06):
but that puts them at twenty nine percent. They themselves
only shot twenty one free throws. And you and I
were having this conversation before the show, and this is
like Boston. If you're missing that many three pointers and
you're shooting only twenty one free throws, you have to
(06:27):
attack the rim. If your three points aren't falling, attack
the rim. If they can get called for You're gonna
tell me that they never foul.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
You mean never?
Speaker 1 (06:39):
What do you mean I'm talking about I'm talking about
Okac's defense.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Is that good that they never fouled? No? No, they Okay,
I'll attack the round, attack the rim.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
But you have to draw people into giving you contact,
and that's not what what Anthony Vers did andthy that
did a lot of pulling.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Up and shooting bricks. And he settled for when he.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Couldn't get by somebody, which a lot of times they
would shoot a half double team and then run back
to their man to keep him from going by people.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
And what did he do? Shoot a three? That's all
they did. They settled, And I guarantee you the next
game they won't settle.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
They'll take it to the basket because they're gonna get
beating ahead the next two days.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Yeah, they gotta go ahead and attack.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
And after the game, we got a chance to hear
from the participants, mainly SGA, and he talked about your guy,
chet HOLGERM chet Holgrim played as you said earlier, you
thought he played a great game. He was six of
nine from the floor, two a four from the free
throw line, but his work was done by playing good defense.
(07:56):
And SGA talked about how important he is to the team.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
Chat was great when he's his best version of himself.
Where the where the best version of ourselves as a unit? Uh,
it's no surprise he affects the game at such a
high level, Like from the moment he was on this
basketball team. Mhm our win column went up, and it's
no surprise, like he affects the game every night, every
(08:21):
possession at the extremely high level. And I think it's
gone under the raidar a little bit. How hard it is.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
To like.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
Be a guy and then sit out for a couple
of months and have to integrate yourself into a team
that's has the best record in the NBA and not
step on nobody's toes but also still be yourself. It's
like that's a super hard position to be in. And
the way he's handled that has been special. And uh,
I don't know if he gets enough credit for that.
He's he's a special person and a special talent, and
(08:49):
he's just he's.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
The reason why we are what we are today.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
You have that other sound that that SG you know
he called, Yeah, you don't have that.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
I don't know if we have that or not.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
He talking when he somehow he called us and like
I don't know he was sick because he sounded a
little different on the I don't know how he got
my phone number.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Also, how did he get my phone? I don't know.
It was a good game tonight. You know, we battled.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Back, you know, I had a little adversity earlier, but
you know that's the way it goes.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
You know, we was trying to really work for my man,
Mark Henry.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
You know he had a big bet down there in
Austin with Mike Harge.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
You know, we're trying to get him and them done that.
So you know we're going to do our best to
try to close the series out. Good luck at that,
Mark Man, we got your back. Yeah. For some strange reason,
his voice sound a little different. I think ran around
a lot loud. That's what it.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Was he was calling. He was trying to sell those
fouls that he was getting. He had to scream when
he was following.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Oh maybe he got hit in the throat on one
of those files. He probably needed to. That's for dog
all Ship. He needed to get hit in the throat,
make it a real foul.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
But he also talked about just being a leader on
the team and how important leadership is.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
Yeah, it's just true to my personality.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
Not always the loudest got in the room or say
too much, but my energy and effort and what I
put on the floor speaks louder than anything. That's just
how I try to not only let go about the game,
but go about life like actions always mean louder the
words to me especially, So that's how I go about it.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
You see, he had the clear the throat, Yeah he did.
He got it in in time. But here's the thing.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
The coach, Coach Fitch for Minnesota, understood that his team
was having a big, big problem last night, good books.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
It seemed like he had from here. I mean, how
you feel just about it? Yeah, I think a lot
of good shots out there.
Speaker 6 (11:00):
Think, you know, we got to clean things up a
little bit. You know, Sometimes it passes related. Sometimes we
weren't uitte shot ready. Sometimes we need to turn it
into to other plays.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
You know.
Speaker 6 (11:11):
But I did think that we got a number of
really good looks, you know, and we really couldn't connect
when the game was kind of turning against us.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
So, yeah, they're gonna have to make some adjustments. But
you know, you got to tip your cap. But as
Yoda loves to say, one game does not a series
make ooh, they will continue to play when.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
We come back.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
There's a list that is out there by Pro Football Focus,
and I want to know if you agree or disagree.
Tiers not tears of joy, Tears of accomplishment. We'll talk
about it right here on the Morning Kickoff on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the
(11:54):
morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Mike Harball, Hard's World's Strongest Man WW Hall
of Famer the Mark Henry. That's right, and of course
we got our guy Marcus on the boards. Coming up
in the next segment, we have Danny Davis of the
Austin American Statesman talking all things Texas. Also, we will
(12:15):
have the head coach of Texas Softball, Mike White, joining
us at the top of the hour, so you do
not want to miss that. But right now, we had
a little conversation about it yesterday and it was brought
to you by CBS. Well, this one is going to
be brought to you by PFF Pro Football Focus, And
(12:38):
those that have been listening to me over the years
know that I'm not always the biggest fan by Pro
Football Focus and the way that they go about their
business as far as the analytics, because sometimes the analytics
don't match the eye test and what everything else that
is going on with the ball game. But everybody always
(12:59):
says numbers don't lie, So we'll just go with that
at this particular moment.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
So here's the deal. Here's the deal.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
When you look at and you hear these numbers, understand
what I'm talking about when I mentioned it. So Pro
Football Focus has this broken down in tiers. Tier one
is elite, Tier two high end starters. Tier three three
A is solid starters who have flashed high end play,
(13:36):
and then Tier three B is solid starters but they
need more help. So basically they saying you can't get
it done because you can't get it done, you need
help to get it done. So in the top of it,
you can look at it and you can say, Patrick Mahomes,
can we agree he is an elite quarterback?
Speaker 3 (13:57):
Of course?
Speaker 1 (13:57):
Yeah, yeah, Joe Burrow who got his team to the
Super Bowl, you would consider him being.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
An elite quarterback, that's right.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, three and four, those two guys
are MVPs, so they can be considered elite. Now you
get to tier two and these are high end starters.
They didn't quantify on what exactly a high end starter
exactly means, but I think we get it. I think
(14:32):
we understand what it is. So two of those guys
on the high end part. Number five and number six
are part of the NFC East. That's the ones that
we're always a part of as well because of Dallas Cowboys,
New York Giants, Washington Commanders, and Philadelphia Eagles. Jalen Hurts
(14:58):
comes in at number five as a high end starter.
Jayden Daniels comes in and year number one, he is
already considered a high end starter.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
You agree, right, I Inda, Well, the only only.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
Reason why I have a little bit is because it's
one year. Is this why it's very minimal?
Speaker 3 (15:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (15:25):
I mean he's a Heisman Trophy winner. He did some
amazing things. So you look at it and you say, okay,
let's put him in that category because of what we saw.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
He did get. Luck was on his side a lot.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
Of times last year with some of those hell Mary
plays that ninety eight percent of the time don't work,
and he got the two percent, So we'll look at
it that way. Jalen Hurts took his team to a
super Bowl and he continues to get better, so I
will put him in that high end starter because of
his win loss record as well. Matthew Stafford, we know
(15:58):
what he is. That's the ironic part. Matthew Stafford was
one pass away from eliminating the Philadelphia Eagles. If he
gets that ball down and they make a play on it,
they knocked them out and they're possible they're going back.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
To the Super if.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
But you tell me that, so we all have aye,
if and butts were candy and nuts. Justin Herbert would
be the number one quarterback in the NFL because everybody
keeps trying to post him up.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
But he comes in at number eight.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
Now here's a solid starters that have flashed some high
end play.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
Jared Goff, absolutely.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
But Jared Goff is going to have a new introduction
to the quarterback play because Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator,
is now exactly so that'll be interesting. Geno Smith, who
they wrote me off, I just didn't right back. Geno
Smith has emerged now as a top ten quarterback according
(17:00):
to Pro Football Focus.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
He now is with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
Rock Purty comes in at number eleven. Now we get
into the nitty party, I think it is. You start
to look at this and you say, is he one
of the most productive quarterbacks? And they said, this is
(17:28):
solid starters that have flashed high end play. Would you
put him in the top eleven above?
Speaker 3 (17:39):
No, I wouldn't.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
Okay, all right, well, here it is Tier three B
solid starters, but they may need they need more help.
That means they're not that great unless they have people
around them to help them out. Party Jordan Love comes
in at number twelve and Heier three B Baker Mayfield
(18:04):
comes in at number thirteen.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
Ce J. Stroup.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Now, remember when I told you that I was kind
of on the fence for Jaden Daniels. And the reason
why I was on the fence for Jaden Daniels is
because of the sample size. Let's not forget that first year.
That first year CJ. Stroud was Jaden Daniels. He was
(18:33):
the one that everybody was talking about, talking about his upside,
talking about what he did for Houston Htown in his
first year. He had a rookie season that was outstanding.
I believe he got Rookie of the Year.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
Too, didn't he. Yeah. CJ. Stroud got a Rookie of
the Year.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
So now you start to look at it and you say,
all right, but he's in that group, that top tier
Tier three B, along with Kyler Murray, Trevor Lawrence, and
ahh yeah, coming in at number seventeen. Dak Prescott, Dakota,
(19:13):
Dakota really really, really really coming in at number seventeen,
followed by two attack of a law. These are the
guys that they put in that Tier three B solid starters.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
But they need more help. How do you feel about that?
Speaker 1 (19:37):
Follow about Tua Toura's in that group too at number eighteen.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
I can believe that Toura is definitely one of those
guys that he needs help. Okay, but Solda's party party
had Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, he had Deebo Samuel, he
had are You, and he has several other serious running
backs that really helped get him.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
To where he was. When he didn't have those guys,
they lost.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
He I mean, you talk about being off the radar,
he was gone. So how you gonna put him in
front of Baker Mayfield, who's who's when, who's played for
teams with nothing and was good. How you gonna put
him in front of Dak Prescott, who has almost.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
Been an MVP, who's played with a lot less and
did more love love having had a number.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
One a real first round draft pick wide receiver since
he got in the NFL, and we'll see what happens
with somebody like Golden now.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
But that's I'm just puzzled.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
His success is based on the fact that he was
in a good situation.
Speaker 3 (21:05):
Yeah, Baker Metfield.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Baker Mayfield has shown a lot of people improving, a
lot of people wrong, and he's kind of calmed himself
into a point that mature. He has a lot of
good things that are working in his direction. I can't
believe that we're ever saying that, but Baker Mayfield is
a competitor. But I'm going back to Dak Prescott, Trevor Lawrence,
(21:27):
Kyler Murray, and of course because we even talked about
it yesterday about the NFC West, the quarterbacks. The only
one that has a question is Sam Darnold and he's
new to it. So we shall see how this all
plays out. This will be a list that I'll be
revisiting a little bit later in the season. But coming
(21:48):
up next our weekly visit with Austin American Statesman's Danny Davis,
as we talk all things Longhorns right here on the
More Thing Kickoff on Sports Radio and teen hundred The Zone.
Welcome back to the morning kickoff right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Make sure you tune
(22:08):
in at eight o'clock as we will have Mike White
of Texas Softball as they get ready for the Super
Regional here in Austin at eight am.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
You do not want to miss that.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
But as always, here's our guy, Danny Davis of.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
The Austin American Statesman.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
You can follow him at Underscore Danny Davis and Danny.
Before we get into all of the conversation about Texas athletics,
I wanted to ask you, what are your thoughts on
the NFL being able to participate in flag football?
Speaker 3 (22:45):
What we do? What are we doing here?
Speaker 7 (22:50):
That's all I got to say.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
Come on, Danny, we got three years, Like, why are
we talking about this now?
Speaker 7 (22:58):
I mean, you know, taking sports out in softball, it's
one of those sports, Baseballs, all those sports are kind
of kind of in and out just because in part
of the United States kind of dominates, and you know,
it's an easy gold medal. I think that's kind of
the case here. I mean that was you know, USA
kind of runs basketball, though some of those games are
occasionally close, but I mean, you know, I guess I
(23:20):
get to see Bjong win a gold medal in three years.
But this is a silly in my opinion.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
And it seems like that would be my first pick too,
would be b John Robinson because he's so elusive and
a lot of people wouldn't be able to tackle him
or excuse me, grab his flag in that particular situation.
But let's get back to the University of Texas. Obviously,
Texas baseball is in a position now where the team
(23:46):
has been well represented in the SEC awards ceremonies, Coach
Slasnegle being named Coach of the Year, Dylan Valantis being
named Freshman of Year Galbond, and if an injury does
not happen to a few players along the way, do
(24:06):
you think Texas would have had a lot more represented.
Speaker 7 (24:12):
I think Max the Loop is probably the one that
I think most people would going to. I mean, the
raging Big twelve Player of the year who was off
to a pretty good, pretty good start this season, and
he came back this this weekend and obviously hit that
home run against Oklahoma. He would have figured that Max
kept playing. When Max played, he would have definitely been
a big contender. But maybe if Max isn't there Ryland,
you know, doesn't jump up his game because you know
(24:34):
a lot more weight was on his shoulder or whatever.
I think Texas was more of the represent of his team.
I think some of their All defensive nominations. I honestly
don't know how Mendoz the gut on that team until
he had played a lot of second base in the
last month that he's been working his way back from
his his shoulder injuries.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
I think Texas was.
Speaker 7 (24:54):
More than represented on the team. And you know, some
guys like Kimball, Schustler and Radan Galvan you got their due,
you know, do recognition. And I think Texas can keet
in the off season knowing that they or the postseason
knowing that they were well respect about the coaches than
Dylan Atlantis and didn't Slashtale be one of the big awards.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
Danny I just asked hard As the question, does he
feel like that the women's softball team could go through
this playoffs meet up with the likes of maybe Oklahoma
and beat them? And he said, yes, I'm gonna ask
you that same question. But about the men, can Texas,
(25:37):
this team, this existing team get through this playoffs, get
to get to the big show and pull this off.
Speaker 7 (25:46):
I mean, there's a cop out answer, but I mean
there's probably like ten teams that can win a national title.
I think Kendall Rogers, who does a lot more about
college baseball than I do, was tweeting something by Day
that this is, you know, one of the more wide
up and fields, and I think that's you know, people
can say that's a compat answer, and people are sitting
on the bench. I think that's true. I think Texas
is in that conversation. But a lot of it comes
down to matchups, and Texas has clear deficient deficiencies and weaknesses,
(26:12):
and if an opposing team can exploit those or you know,
take advantage of some suspect the pitching depth that Texas
kind of has. Texas are one of those weird situations
where they have pitching depth, but then they also don't
have pitching depth, but it's not everyone's not pitching well.
Then Texas can definitely lose. I mean, Texas could lose
in the regional, Texas could win the entire thing. Both
those scenarios, if they happen, I don't think would be
(26:34):
a complete shock. But that's why we why we play
the game and why Texas has to go out there
on the.
Speaker 3 (26:40):
Field and prove it.
Speaker 7 (26:41):
So they definitely have the talent and the they're having
the season worthy of a champion. But you know, there's
they're not a shoe and they're not even a shoe
in to make a do all a monitor to go
out there and earn it.
Speaker 1 (26:50):
So we're talking to Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
You can follow them at Underscore Danny Davis and Danny
you know, as we get ready for this SEC tournament,
Texas doesn't play until tomorrow afternoon, and that game is
going to be possibly Tennessee, a team that Texas has
(27:11):
not played this year, but it will be the winner
of the Tennessee and the Alabama game, which will take
place this afternoon at one o'clock.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
But how do you.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
See this Texas team going about this SEC tournament. I
was talking to some other folks yesterday I did radio
in Louisiana and they were saying a lot of teams
don't even really care about this SEC tournament. It's the
ones that really needed, like an Oklahoma or maybe even
Florida or even Texas.
Speaker 3 (27:41):
A and M that are really going to go try
to win this thing.
Speaker 7 (27:46):
Yeah, I think it. Your mileage may vary. I guess
this is kind of how I would say about this.
I think David Eckert we as a team for us
read about this in Monday's paper. I think, and I mean,
there is a track record of regular season champions also
winning the conference championship. But I think it's just kind
of depends on how Jim ops to prioritize his pitching
(28:10):
this week. He traditionally, as David reported, doesn't really throw
his Friday and Saturday starters and the sec ables he
did in the A and M like more than a
couple of innings. I mean, I would expect Luke Harrison
get some work. I would expect Ruger to get some work.
If you know, the Texas has a deep stay in Hoover,
but you know, are those guys going to go six seven?
(28:31):
Indians just needed oors in Texas going to be preparing
for the postseason, preparing setting their pitching staff up for
next weekend and what the regional setup.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
Will look like.
Speaker 7 (28:40):
And I think that could make a big difference because
they're going to run into to some teams who are
fighting for succeeding or maybe even fighting to get into
the get into the tournament, and they're going to be
throwing every kitchen sink at Texas trying to win that
game in Texas does not have that part, you know,
that intentive. Texas is going to be a regional host,
is going to be a super regional host if they
(29:01):
make it that far. The Texas care that much about
the overall number one seed. Maybe they do, maybe they don't,
But I mean they're going to be top ey teed
regardless of what happens. This is. If they lose on Thursday,
they're going to be a top a seat. If they
win the entire tam they're going to be a.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
Top ey seed.
Speaker 7 (29:13):
So I think Texas doesn't have the intention to throw
everything at whoever they play it. And maybe a good
week could kind of get you know, mix and match
and get some matches teat and get some guys from
playing time as they prepare for the postseason. And I
just don't think we're going to see Luke Harrison throwing
seven eight Indians at any point this weekend.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
Yeah. I don't think so at all either.
Speaker 1 (29:34):
Daniel will let you go with this because there is
a lot of conversation about football and the mock drafts
that are out there. I know, I already think I
know where you're going with this. But they have Arch Manning,
who's played minimal football, going as high as number one.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
And as low as number three. What is your take
on that.
Speaker 7 (30:01):
Those people have families to feed, and good for them
feeding those families. I mean, that's that's what it is.
That's what the time to see the year is. I mean,
I'm sure every went back a year, we could find
some mock draftsas I know, we can find some mock
drass Head Quinn going in the first round and we
know what happened there. I mean, those mock drafts a
year ahead of time are just you know, fadder for
us to talk about and stuff for fans to read.
(30:23):
Doesn't really matter until it doesn't really matter what happens
in the season. I mean, what happens during the season
and what happens during the draft process should our choose
to come out, is going to determine his future, not
what some writer believes in in April or May of
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
And we're a long way away.
Speaker 7 (30:42):
And that's just how the sausage is made. But get
on those journals. I'm surevor and a thing or two
that has been completely outlandish and just out there to
you know, get some clicks, and that's.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
Just what this is. I appreciate your honesty, brother, That's
how you got to do it sometimes. Thank you.
Speaker 1 (30:59):
Dandy which talking to Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
Make sure you get over and follow him at Underscore
Danny Davis and Danny don't forget we got coach Mike
White coming up at eight o'clock as always.
Speaker 3 (31:13):
Thanks brother, That was good to guys. All right, appreciate
it coming up next.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
Do we even care about traditions anymore? We'll talk about
it right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio
and thirteen hundred the Zone.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
You know what that sound is? No, no, no, I'm
not gonna give away monster truck stuff. Mark always gives
me a hard time thinking it's monster Trump. But right
now I'm gonna give.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
You an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to
go see Alice Cooper and Judas Priest October the twenty
fifth at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater. All you gotta do
is get over to that iHeartRadio at tap the red
microphone and give us the word of the day and
(32:01):
that is still still is the word of the day
for a chance to win a pair of tickets to
go see Alice Cooper and Judas Priest October to twenty
fifth at the Germania Amphitheater out by Coda. All right,
let me talk about this man, because I wanted to know,
(32:22):
are we losing faith in our traditions? And the reason
why this is being brought up is because of obviously expansion,
the way that all of these games are being played.
We've got realignment, There's so many other things that are
(32:43):
going on that it just seems to me that a
lot of folks truly are not into nostalgia. So there's
a report that is coming out that USC and No
Tre Dame may cancel their annual game. And I'm curious
(33:10):
to the fact that is that something, because remember we
lost the Texas in Texas A and M game for
quite some time. Would you be upset if there's no
Texas Oklahoma game?
Speaker 3 (33:30):
Yes? I would. That is my point.
Speaker 1 (33:34):
These are traditions in college athletics that should not be changed.
Think about North Carolina Duke. Let's just say we're not
going to play that game anymore, right, So why is
it that their biggest game for so many No Tre
Dame USC has been played a.
Speaker 3 (33:56):
Ton because of the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
Nobody wants to take a chance on taking an L
and being knocked down the ranking. So they're trying to
eliminate as many games that can physically take it out
of you one.
Speaker 3 (34:13):
Or drop you down in the ranking.
Speaker 2 (34:17):
And and and that's that's that's running away from Coach
Sark was the one that was like begging A and M,
come on, man.
Speaker 3 (34:24):
Let's do this. A and M was like, oh man.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
I don't think so, man, Like stop it, like it's
the whole what is where's the honor for the tradition
you talked about the tradition of the sport.
Speaker 3 (34:45):
Where is that right?
Speaker 2 (34:47):
I just don't understand how you can This is where
the n c a A should step in and say no,
we're gonna we're gonna keep our flagship rivals going because
that's where drives out of sport.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
I look at it like this, and to your point,
if that's the case, and they're looking at stopping it
because of playoffs and all that, the playoffs have expanded,
so that should not be a part of it.
Speaker 3 (35:13):
It's not a conference game.
Speaker 1 (35:15):
But y'all have been playing each other since nineteen twenty four.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
Nineteen twenty four. I wouldn't want to break that and
have that on my record.
Speaker 1 (35:28):
So why is it that you feel like you should
just walk away from something like that. I said it
before and I'll say it again. I was upset when
Texas and Texas A and M stopped playing each other
on Thanksgiving. Now I understand Thanksgiving has kind of changed
(35:49):
their dynamics, but for a long time, when we were
having to play no offense Texas Tech on Thanksgiving, it
just didn't.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
Have the same It wasn't.
Speaker 1 (36:02):
It wasn't those games like the hat Fields and the
McCoys that we were talking about. This is a lot
of people sitting at dinner together watching this game, some
A and M, some Texas fans, friends that have grown
up together that decided to go to the rival schools.
Speaker 3 (36:19):
But we hung out and watch that game together. It was.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
A hard lesson during that time, and for the state,
it was something that was missed. Now USC obviously being
in the Pac ten now I mean, excuse me, in
the Big Ten now having to travel as much as
they had to travel this year. I could see it
being a problem. I could see the travel, but I mean,
(36:48):
come on, man, make it.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
Even though having played Jared World, well not only that,
just fly mutually, like you're not flying with the common folk,
no charters, so it's not like that big of a deal.
You gotta go through the airport and carrying a bag
and you don't have to do all that.
Speaker 8 (37:07):
No.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
No, And that's why I look at it and I
just try to figure out, like, are we as a society,
And yes, we've got a lot of things going on
that I question, but are we as a society moving
away from the things that we all grew up on,
that we raised our kids on, and that our families
(37:30):
share these traditions?
Speaker 2 (37:31):
Can I can I share something? I think that we
just are not as tough as we used to be.
We we we lean into what's easy, what's available, rather
than taking what you want and going and get it
and working hard and and and and and being able
(37:53):
to be vulnerable. Hey, I don't have it right now.
Everybody's on this social media thing. They want to show,
Oh we're doing great. Oh man, we're a million dollar house,
the nice cars.
Speaker 3 (38:08):
How about the struggle. Show the struggle, show me how
you got there. Yeah, Like, we don't want to do that.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
We're shamed of the struggle.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
My kids are not allowed that.
Speaker 2 (38:22):
Like Sean Adams told us both years ago, Mark, there's
no off rams, and I think that's where we are
in this society.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
We're on the off rampa. Well, let's not let that happen.
Let's try to figure out a way to get some
other stuff done. And that is why I always look
at it and say, man, let's keep these types of
games there because it is the fabric of college athletics.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
It is the fabric of what we do.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
So coming up next, we've got the head softball coach
of Texas Softball, Mike White, joins us at the top
of the hour, or the talk Super Regional and how
they got here Right here on the Morning Kickoff on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to
a way back Wednesday edition of The Morning Kickoff right
(39:13):
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. We
opened up the show talking about Minnesota getting wrecked by OKC.
We also talked Pro Football's quarterback list, and we spoke
with Danny Davis and we finished off the hour number
one about traditions, and I'm hoping to build a tradition
with this young man right here. He is the head
(39:35):
coach of your Texas Longhorn softball team as they advanced
to the Super Regional after a.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
Three and oh regional. He is Mike White. Good morning, coach,
Good morning, how are you doing today.
Speaker 1 (39:49):
We're excited to have you on and I know that
you guys are excited about this upcoming weekend.
Speaker 3 (39:55):
But I want to backtrack a little bit.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
You got a chance to play Eastern Wellnoid to kick
off the regional.
Speaker 3 (40:02):
You won that.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
Game ten to two and pounded out fifteen hits.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
You beat Michigan sixteen to.
Speaker 1 (40:08):
Four, power display was on with five home runs. And
then you go out and you defeat UCF nine to
nothing to advance to the super regionals. Talk about last
weekend and how your team performed.
Speaker 3 (40:24):
Yeah, I thought that offense was on fire.
Speaker 9 (40:26):
Literally, you know, they were really talleentable pretty well and
was one through nine.
Speaker 3 (40:30):
So everyone contributed and did a good job.
Speaker 9 (40:32):
We have some really good pitching and some defense, so
you know, when you put it all together, you ended
up with three wins, which was really important, sending us
up for a good magtap against Clemson.
Speaker 1 (40:43):
Yeah, and I was excited about it because not only
were your your power on display with back to back
home runs and just the way that you guys went
about it. In that final game, you had Teagan Kavan
and she looked like herself against UCF, going seven innings
with five k's and only walking one.
Speaker 3 (41:03):
Was that what you were looking for from her? Yeah?
Speaker 9 (41:07):
Obviously she had been struggling just a little bit, and
I think it was important to get a complete game
out of her, throwing just over one hundred pitches, you know,
just for that endurance factor and you know, getting her
confidence label back to where it needs to be.
Speaker 3 (41:18):
And I thought she was in control of the whole game.
I just got a.
Speaker 9 (41:21):
Little little bit of trouble in the middle innings there
about you's had to work through it, and I thought
it was definitely one of her best performances in the
last month.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
Coach we I asked hard as a question, what is
it gonna take for the long harm the long harmed
women to go through this playoff?
Speaker 3 (41:41):
And we then a loss of shout out, So.
Speaker 2 (41:47):
What is it gonna take for y'all to get to
that last game and be able to show what you
can do well.
Speaker 3 (41:55):
I think it's just during the fundamentals better.
Speaker 9 (41:57):
You can't worry about what's ahead of you and you
just got to play the game. You know, has to
lay it out in front of you. It's a cliche,
but you know it is. It is what it is.
And you know, the teams that have an opportunity to
make plays make them.
Speaker 3 (42:09):
Uh you know, those come, those come out and they shine.
Speaker 9 (42:11):
You know, you can't give teams extra opportunities in otherwise,
if these double plays to be had, you gotta take them,
or any kind of play you know, touches your glove,
you gotta make it. And then executing when you're at bat,
you know, just making sure that you're having called the A,
B S. And that's what we focus on. Be definitely
stress and more process over outcome. Uh you know, so
that's gonna be real important for us. Base running has
(42:32):
to be really good. I mean, we have all the
all the physical pieces in place. Just a mental part
we've got to put together. But I feel like the
team's in a really good place right now and they're
really you know going for it.
Speaker 2 (42:43):
Is there one player in particular that if you get
the best out of them, everybody else comes along. There's
always a magnet player that draws everybody in, Like, who
is that for you?
Speaker 3 (42:56):
Well, it's got to be Resatwood.
Speaker 9 (42:57):
I mean, she's she's a queen of the home run
for us right now. I just hit her twentieth, you know,
leads the school and ibis it just as a junior.
You know, it's just got a whole year left for career,
Ibis you know, so she's a huge piece of our offense.
Speaker 3 (43:12):
And then the top of the order.
Speaker 9 (43:13):
You know, just those three combined together, they're going to
get on for Reese and they've be dide a pretty
good job of that.
Speaker 1 (43:19):
We're talking to the head softball coach for Texas No
Texas Longhorns, Mike White, as they get ready for the
Super Regionals. Coach, I will ask you about Clemson here
in just the second, but you mentioned Reese atwill she Atwood?
Speaker 3 (43:34):
Excuse me?
Speaker 1 (43:34):
She's as steady as she as they come behind the plate,
and at the play, you had three all Americans led
by Reese Atwood. Mia Scott comes in and she's got
over three hundred career hits and of course Teagan Cavan
being on the second team with Mia Scott. These ladies
have meant a lot to this program and will continue
(43:58):
to mean a lot for this program move moving forward.
Speaker 3 (44:01):
Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 9 (44:02):
I mean, you know, me is going to be in
the career record books for number of runs scored.
Speaker 3 (44:06):
In her careers.
Speaker 9 (44:07):
I mean, she has to been on base a lot,
and she's a you know, one of those once in
generation type plays you get through the program. You know,
we've been fortunate to have jenn A Jiffson was the
last one, and then we had Mia Scott, and we're
hoping that in our next group we have somebody else
that's going to come.
Speaker 3 (44:22):
Through, which was reesat with obviously.
Speaker 9 (44:24):
So you continue to produce those types of players for
our recruiting, and you know, Coach Singleton's helping us with
that and we're generating some really good leads as far
as that goes, and it's huge for our program to
continue to do well. So you continue to have that lifeline,
you know, that lifeblood of your program with the recruiting.
Speaker 3 (44:42):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (44:42):
Has been really impressive to watch these ladies over the
year as they get better and better, and a lot
of that, as you said, goes back to the coaching,
but also the player as an individual.
Speaker 3 (44:53):
So tell us about Clemson.
Speaker 1 (44:54):
Clemson comes in after winning their regional and now they
are coming in start. You got eight o'clock games starting
this weekend.
Speaker 3 (45:05):
So tell us about what you've seen on Clemson.
Speaker 9 (45:09):
Yeah, you know, they've got some speed throughout their lineup,
some really fast kids, a lot of left hand hitters,
some power, you know throughout the lineup.
Speaker 3 (45:17):
You know, they're obviously they're running a high too.
Speaker 9 (45:19):
They come up a pretty good series beating Northwestern and
I come Inmber the other team they beat. But you know,
they had a really old Kentucky to beat Kentucky, which
is from the SEC UH and uh, you know, they
were pretty impressive in their win there.
Speaker 3 (45:35):
That They've got a two main pitchers that they.
Speaker 9 (45:37):
Throw at us and they're mostly screw riseball with the
good change ups. So we've got to be prepared for that.
We're working hard on that this week to get ready
for them. But they're you know, they're well coached. You know,
John Ritman's their head coach and.
Speaker 3 (45:49):
They're just in their fifth year.
Speaker 9 (45:51):
I think as a program having started late, but they've
reached the postseason each one of those years.
Speaker 3 (45:56):
So let me ask you this.
Speaker 1 (45:57):
Both all the games will be at eight o'clock starting
this Thursday. We can watch them on ESPN two against Clemson.
Does the start time I mean, obviously I'm preaching to
the choir when it comes to this, but does the
start time matter to you at any of these moments?
Speaker 3 (46:17):
No, I don't think so.
Speaker 9 (46:18):
I think sometimes, you know, waiting that long during the day,
you can play with your mind just a little bit,
you know, instead of just getting out through at five
o'clock or something. But we have played some later games
in the day, and we practiced last night at night
just to kind of get used to it and be
on the lights again for a little bit.
Speaker 3 (46:34):
But and what was really cool was the temperature. You know,
this temperature at that time of night was was awesome.
Speaker 9 (46:40):
Eighty degrees and it felt like it was fifty five,
you know, especially after the weekend. So that's going to
help with the players with fatigue factor, I think.
Speaker 1 (46:50):
So I wanted to ask you this because it's been
on my mind for a while because when you are
out looking for a certain type of player, I don't
want you to give you trade secrets out. But I'm
just curious to this, what is it that you look
for in these young ladies when you're out recruiting them
to come to the University of Texas.
Speaker 3 (47:12):
Well.
Speaker 9 (47:12):
Obviously you got to have the metrics, You've got to
have the physical tools to be able to compete at
this level.
Speaker 3 (47:16):
I mean that's, you know, the first thing.
Speaker 9 (47:17):
And then the second part is, you know, grit, determination, courage,
you know those type of things. And then be a
good fit for our program. You know, care about your
team and your teammates. You know, just be a good,
good person. And that comes through the recruiting process. But
you know, they've got to stand out. They've got to
be able to carry themselves like champions, and you know
(47:38):
that's what we look for.
Speaker 3 (47:39):
I love it. I love it, and I do want
to ask you this.
Speaker 1 (47:42):
Stuart and Mitchell they had that little back and forth
during the post game the other day talking about every
time I hit one, she tries to hit one, and
vice versa. The competition amongst players is so good because
they don't want to let each other down. Is that
something that they preach to each other throughout the team.
Speaker 9 (48:03):
Yeah, I think so I mean they want to push
each other, you know, they want to do.
Speaker 3 (48:06):
For a team.
Speaker 9 (48:07):
They know that that friendly rivalry between themselves can help
the team, and that's what's most important. And if it works,
if it pushes you and it makes you focus and say,
hey you got one, now I need to get one,
I'm all for it.
Speaker 3 (48:20):
So it's awesome.
Speaker 1 (48:21):
Well, we wish you nothing but the best, coach, and
tell everybody to make sure that they get out to
the ballpark because I know you love to do that.
Speaker 9 (48:29):
Oh absolutely, We've got to be out there, and there's
no reason because the temperature should be awesome, it should
be a great environment, it should be nice and loud,
and there's plenty of room in the outfield to get
beyond the fence. Gets kind of crazy out there, and
they got the airhorns going and just.
Speaker 3 (48:43):
Rock the place, man, no doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (48:46):
As always, coach, we thank you for your time. I
know you're running a mile a minute and just staying
busy to get ready for this weekend.
Speaker 3 (48:54):
But we wish you guys nothing but the best of love.
I appreciate all and we love it and.
Speaker 1 (48:59):
Hook them there is Coach Mike White getting ready for
the Super Regionals as Clemson comes into town. As I said,
all the games will start this weekend, starting Thursday night.
You get Texas baseball in the afternoon on Thursday, and
you finish the night with Texas softball as they have
(49:20):
their Super Regional against Clemson. Mark they got a lot
of power the Texas softball team, and he was talking
about Reese Atwood and how she's an integral part of
the success of this program. Every time I've watched her play,
she seems to get better and better as the game
(49:42):
goes on and the moment gets bigger.
Speaker 2 (49:44):
Well, that's what happens with great players. Great players rise
to the occasion in the biggest games under the most
pressured situation. So you know, it's good to have somebody
like that on your team, especially if you're a younger play.
Yeah to look too. So she's been a great example,
not just a great player.
Speaker 3 (50:05):
As we talked about.
Speaker 1 (50:06):
She is an All American back to back seasons as
a first team All American Mia Scott who leads to
the team.
Speaker 3 (50:14):
She has over three hundred career hits. She was a
second teamer in Teagan Cavan, the ace of the staff,
was a second teamer as well when we come back.
I got some questions for y'all, and the Cowboys have
answered them.
Speaker 1 (50:30):
Ah right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Great stuff by Texas softball
coach Mike White as his team prepares for Clemson in
the Super Regional that will take place this weekend. Really
excited about that because the women are really, really good
(50:50):
and they've got a lot of power and the expectation
is for them to get back to Okay, see what's
you laughing at?
Speaker 3 (50:58):
Man? Right here? Coach White, boys, I think that's not
a knife. That's a knife. Okay.
Speaker 2 (51:10):
I love the Australian accent. I got you, It's one
of my favorite. The South African accent is very close,
but nothing tops the Australian accent.
Speaker 3 (51:20):
Yeah he is.
Speaker 1 (51:22):
He's got this thing fired up and ready to go,
and U can't thank him enough for taking the time
to be with us.
Speaker 3 (51:30):
Wanted to talk Dallas Cowboys. Shocker. There's a lot going
on in Dallas.
Speaker 1 (51:34):
As OTAs have now started taking place, and they got
a chance to work together. All guys showed up. George
Pickens was in camp. Coach Schottenheimer is the new head coach,
new regime in Dallas, and he's really excited about all
things Dallas Cowboys. But I wanted you to hear from
(51:57):
coach Shottenheimer and talking about his team and going out
and competing every day.
Speaker 10 (52:04):
We do some things in the team room, We do
some things in my office QBS. I just I just
lost to the QBS in my office. Actually Dak was
my teammates, so I guess Dak lost to He'll be
mad that I told you guys that, But yeah, it's
just the The central theme of the program is compete
every day, and so we find different ways to do it.
(52:25):
We look at, you know, what's going on in the world,
you know, congratulations to the Stars. I think that's you know,
really cool for Dallas Professional Sports what they're doing. So
at some point a team we might you know, shoot
at some goals with a hockey stick and maybe a
soft puck, not a hard puck. But we look at
different ways to compete. And we did something for the
(52:45):
Masters the other day that was pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (52:48):
I had a putt off.
Speaker 10 (52:48):
But get these guys in different types of environments and
ask them to do different things, and it's fun to
watch these world class football players that absolutely suck at
shooting free throws. I mean literally, like I'm not gonna
say names, Osa that really was not very good. But
it's fun to watch these guys compete and get outside
(53:10):
their comfort level but to try to one up each other.
Speaker 1 (53:14):
I do love the fact that these guys are doing
some things that are unorthodox. And the reason why I
say that they're not unorthodox, they're just something that is
out of the norm. And the reason why I say
that is because this is OTA's this is a new regime.
This is everybody getting to show the level of competition
(53:34):
towards each other. But he's right, Dak is gonna be
pissed that you said his team lost because people will
run with that People will run with that gooch.
Speaker 3 (53:45):
If things like this happen, you.
Speaker 1 (53:48):
Don't want to put your quarterback was on the losing
side of this.
Speaker 3 (53:51):
But this is a double edged sword.
Speaker 2 (53:53):
He's showing his team that you need to be competitive
every day on one side of the coin, but it's
also team building. Every coach out there that's listening to
our voice, you need to have activities where all your
(54:14):
players are in on it, whether it's running gassers, running horses.
Speaker 3 (54:21):
Hey, man, let's see who can win.
Speaker 2 (54:23):
The person that win you don't get to you don't
have to run the last one. It's team building. Yeah,
we're gonna go play. We're gonna go shoot hoops. See
who can shoot the most free throws? Person come in last.
You gotta go over there and stand on one leg
for five minutes. Deuce Vaughan made the most free throws
(54:43):
in the running backs. I do know that for sure.
He won the free throw shooting contest. Wow, So Duce competes.
Speaker 3 (54:51):
Duce competes, and then I just wants to get on
the field so he can compete that way. But one
of the biggest things for coach Schottenheimer and what he's
been trying to do is with Micah, Micah Parsons and
his crew being able to build a culture of winning
basically in Dallas.
Speaker 10 (55:09):
Well, the first couple of days, what we were doing.
We're doing some you know, team building things, some culture.
We've spoken very openly about trying to create one of
the greatest cultures in professional sports. Micah uh is going
to be a leader for US. Michaeh wants to be
a leader for US. He's going to do that, and
so I felt like it was really important for him
to be here to begin that process.
Speaker 1 (55:30):
And everybody wants to talk about his contract, but Micah
is not talking about his contract. He's being there, he's
showing up, he's competing because he still has a contract.
He's just looking for that extension. And so Micah showing
that leadership has been important for the for the Dallas Capital.
Speaker 2 (55:46):
He's the best player on that team. He's the best
player in that division on defense. So you have to
listen to that one because sometimes doing is better than
telling in a lot of ways. But I feel like that,
you know, if Michael Coach signs for the coach, then
(56:08):
everybody else is gonna fall in line too.
Speaker 3 (56:10):
So either way, it's a win win situation.
Speaker 1 (56:14):
Yeah, it is something that you continue to look at
and you try to understand that in this particular NFL,
in this team with the new coach, you need your
leaders to be the ones to step up to be
that type of of goal setter to pull the most
out of each other. But one of the New York
(56:37):
players that is on the squad is George Pickens. He
too is a guy that has some baggage well in
the perception area, but Coach Schottenheimer and the Cowboys wanted
to go get a different type of playmaker. And it's
not one A. I mean one versus two is one
A one B?
Speaker 10 (56:56):
Yeah, I think it CD he said it best. I
saw his comments right where we don't have a one
that we don't do a's and b's. We think that
there's a one over there. See he said it, And
if you look over there, there's a one there. So
I think that's the way that we view GP. My
time with him has been just incredible. When he came
(57:19):
in after the trade, just getting a chance to really
get to know him. We had a little free throw
shooting competition. I think he beat me twice. I've beaten
him once, but the last time we played, I beat him,
So I do want to put that out there that
I did beat him. But it's really just you know,
us getting to know each other. I think we were
all on board, you know. I think we've we're always
(57:40):
trying to find the right pieces and good pieces, and
I think we're really excited about what he brings as
a football player.
Speaker 3 (57:48):
But I see a guy that's maturing.
Speaker 10 (57:50):
I see a guy that we're excited to put out
there and watch him grow and get better. And you
guys will see him out there today. He obviously is
a true and this athlete. But I love watch him
in meetings because in meetings he's been so dialed in,
taking great notes. He knows he's a little bit behind,
not a lot, but a little bit behind in terms
(58:11):
of what the veterans are doing. But his intentionality in
the meeting room has been really cool for me.
Speaker 1 (58:17):
See, I am going to ask Google if intentionality is
a word?
Speaker 3 (58:25):
A word?
Speaker 2 (58:26):
Hey man, Mike types to make up words. Let's try
to make up some words. If he won't to, I
was like, wait, you know what I'm starting to I'm
starting to like his personality and I think that that's
something that's a big plus with a team. You want
to like your coach, right, you want to play for
your coach, right, And these guys it's been real quiet.
(58:50):
You know how we say, like the Cowboys are always
so loud, and this is going on, and do you
hear it?
Speaker 3 (58:57):
Yeah, it's quiet right now. Well, here's the thing. They
liked Mike McCarthy, they liked Jason Gearty, they liked Chan Gaily.
Speaker 1 (59:14):
Yeah, yeah, the office. What is going to happen to
win ballgames? That's all I care. Find a way to
win and if this team building gets a chance.
Speaker 3 (59:27):
To make that happen, let's do it.
Speaker 1 (59:30):
But Dak Prescott was asked about his excitement when he
found out that they got George Pickens.
Speaker 11 (59:37):
Yeah, I'm pretty funny.
Speaker 3 (59:40):
I guess.
Speaker 11 (59:40):
I was actually away from my phone for a couple
hours and go back to like six missed calls from
Jerry's assistant, so had no idea, literally no idea what
it could have been about. And actually a voicemail from Jerry, Hey,
I got some good news.
Speaker 3 (59:53):
I want to show it.
Speaker 11 (59:55):
So I called him back and he was excited and
he was just telling me that it happened, that it'd
be released either later later that night or the next morning,
and uh yeah, just a lot of excitement from the
both of us.
Speaker 3 (01:00:06):
Can you that Jerry voice again? No one off I
was would have said, because that wasn't Jerry Deck. I
think we found our glory. You know the rest.
Speaker 1 (01:00:22):
Coming up next, Coming up next, We've got the world's
strongest man bringing you his world's strongest take right here on.
Speaker 3 (01:00:32):
The morning kickoff on Sports Radio Am thirteen hundred the
zone there he is that be hit. You can only
know one thing when that happens.
Speaker 1 (01:00:42):
WWE Hall of Famer and the World's Strongest Man, date
Mark Kenny brings you his World's Strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:00:51):
Take it away, big fellow parch what's up man? You
know what time it is? What time is it?
Speaker 2 (01:00:57):
It's time for the world wrongest take by the World's
Strongest Man.
Speaker 3 (01:01:05):
My guess back then they didn't know me. Now I'm hot,
They're all on me. Guys.
Speaker 2 (01:01:13):
Today's take. It's brought to you in part by my
plates dot Com. I am very, very sick and tired
of being sick and tired about stuff that relates to
what I love but has no relevancy to what I love,
(01:01:39):
and that is this whole Olympic football experience that we're
going through right now. Everybody's saying, oh the flag football,
It's going to be great in the Olympics.
Speaker 3 (01:01:58):
And now one player.
Speaker 2 (01:02:02):
Per every team will be allowed to try out to
see if they will be selected as the player that's
gonna go and be a part of this team.
Speaker 3 (01:02:15):
Guys. Being an Olympian, I love the Olympic movement.
Speaker 2 (01:02:23):
Our fundraise for it I'm on the board of the
US Weightlifting Foundation.
Speaker 3 (01:02:32):
I love getting together and going to the functions.
Speaker 2 (01:02:37):
But you will not my take. You will not see
Mark Henry support this flag football. I just don't like it.
I don't like it. My take is that it's gonna
not be football. Flag football, seven on seven. All of
(01:02:58):
those are different things football. It's just played with a football.
Speaker 3 (01:03:06):
Hard. What say you?
Speaker 1 (01:03:08):
I mean, just because they said that NFL players are
allowed to play, but what's to say that NFL players
want to play?
Speaker 3 (01:03:23):
This is Jefferson. Jefferson wants to play right now, right now,
he wants to play.
Speaker 1 (01:03:31):
He said he wants to play right now. Vote Tarik Hill,
you volunteer b Jonn Robinson for it. I said I
would watch it. I'm gonna watch it regardless. I'm gonna
watch the I'm not voting for it. I'm not the
one that's out there saying, let's make it happen, let's
(01:03:52):
do it. I look, here's the deal, here's where I
look at it.
Speaker 3 (01:03:59):
In this life.
Speaker 1 (01:04:01):
Okay, you could be the first to be part of
the participation team. You could be the inaugural team. So
that means something. Number one, number two, you are just
going to be like the dream team Bingo was in
the NBA when they put that team together where.
Speaker 2 (01:04:20):
They allow somebody else's ability to support their country.
Speaker 1 (01:04:26):
Well, I mean, they're part of our country, so therefore
they have the ability to go out there and do it.
They just happen to be the extreme level of extreme
flag football. You know what I'm saying. They are the
best of the best. What it does also create is
the dominance in this type of arena for Americans. Now,
(01:04:48):
the biggest question is if you go over there and
you end up getting beat, now what now, how you
come back over here and you try to be that person.
It's like, nah, bro, you got beat in flag football.
My Kazakhs than get exactly about dude, that gotta go
to work tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:05:05):
So, I mean, it is what it is.
Speaker 1 (01:05:07):
So my question to you in this particular moment is
do we honestly, honestly, honestly, do we even care. I
bet your Canada is gonna have a good team. I
bet Mexico is gonna have a good team because they
play football.
Speaker 3 (01:05:25):
Yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:05:27):
But the thing about it, Harge, that's gonna happen in
twenty twenty eight.
Speaker 3 (01:05:35):
So I say, do we even care like I'm.
Speaker 2 (01:05:38):
I'm like, man, it's three years away, not to mention,
I just don't feel like I don't watch it now.
When my kid played flag football, I used to tell
him every day, Hey, you know, in real football, you
hit people and they hit you, So don't get super
(01:06:00):
caught up in what we're doing here.
Speaker 3 (01:06:04):
In two years you'll be able to play real football.
But my wife will tell you right now.
Speaker 2 (01:06:09):
I was anti flag football when Jacob was in middle school.
Speaker 3 (01:06:17):
And the question why though, I just don't think.
Speaker 2 (01:06:20):
It teaches you to reach which you don't reach in football,
you go through.
Speaker 3 (01:06:28):
With your body.
Speaker 2 (01:06:29):
It teaches you that misdirection without a quarterback has a
false sense of security because he's got three seconds before
somebody rushes him, another second before they could possibly get
to him.
Speaker 3 (01:06:42):
That's not real football.
Speaker 2 (01:06:45):
So it's it's a lot of things that teach you
the wrong way. You have to be reprogrammed but done
to teach you the fundamentals of how to throw, catch
and where your position is.
Speaker 3 (01:06:58):
Jacob is a lineman running back back then, so he
got a chance to work on his footwork, he got
a chance to do certain things.
Speaker 2 (01:07:07):
So initially it's good, but there's a lot of those
kids that were tackles. There are a lot of those
kids that were tight end. Well you was on the
wrong team then then that's what it was. That that
that might.
Speaker 3 (01:07:21):
Have been it. That might be they won they won
it all.
Speaker 2 (01:07:24):
Okay, so it taught the victories like this is not
real football.
Speaker 1 (01:07:29):
Yeah, but you were also the Mark Henry at that time,
and so your mindset was not on the small in
the week.
Speaker 3 (01:07:38):
You were more those kids. Those kids were tough you.
They just were not getting hit.
Speaker 1 (01:07:43):
And I think too, it saves there the marbles. That
saves their marbles. But I understand what you're talking about.
I want to say contact table tennis. I want to
see full contact bowling. Like that's just my mentality. Like
I can't get into it.
Speaker 3 (01:08:02):
There's not enough. He just say, r I p terrritate
off off the line back. That's what I want. That's
what it sounds like. You know, that's that's you in
the fucterator. You need an office.
Speaker 1 (01:08:20):
We need somebody to come in here and tackle you
from going into getting into somebody else's I'm not eating. Yeah,
you didn't bring those groceries. You don't get those groceries,
but another great take by the world's strongest man. My
thing is this, you're gonna play flag football, and you
(01:08:41):
in the n f of L stop it after Michael
Jordan means you get some help.
Speaker 3 (01:08:48):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (01:08:49):
We don't need you on that side. No, I'm not
on your side. I just said we're right now. We
don't have to talk about it. I'm not on your side.
I won't be John Robinson there. When we come back,
we'll close out the show and send you to Dan Patrick.
Speaker 3 (01:09:06):
I got an.
Speaker 1 (01:09:06):
Update for you on three different things well now too.
Mark just talked about one of them right here on
the Morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
I want to thank Danny Davis on the Austin American
Statesmen and coach Mike White of Texas Softball for joining
(01:09:27):
us today here on the Morning Kickoff. And if you
missed any part of the show, get over to our
podcast page.
Speaker 3 (01:09:34):
And I want y'all to also.
Speaker 1 (01:09:36):
Know that we are on YouTube so you can go
back and watch the shows as well and check out
some of our interactions during the show and see exactly
how this show is actually made. Also, if you missed
any of our interviews this week. All you got to
do is get over to that podcast page and check
(01:09:57):
it all out. Type in the I want to kickoff,
typeing AM thirteen hundred to zone and wherever you get
your podcasts, we.
Speaker 3 (01:10:05):
Are loaded up on that. I want to get into
an update on a couple things.
Speaker 1 (01:10:11):
Number one we talked about it update is flag football
is being approved, has been approved, and there's a lot
that is going on with that Tush push. I believe
it's going to be amended today. They are making the
vote and we should know more about it. And Bill Belichick,
(01:10:33):
I knew I wasn't going to talk about it, but
Bill Belichick has been rumored to be engaged to that
young lady Jordan Judaan Jordan, and the rumors are starting
to swirl. So be paying attention to that because I
know a lot of you have been paying attention to that.
Speaker 3 (01:10:56):
But news came.
Speaker 1 (01:10:57):
Out yesterday that Roger Goodell and we talked about these
international games. News came out yesterday that Roger Gooddell believes
that there can be a sixteen game schedule.
Speaker 3 (01:11:14):
Internationally. Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:11:16):
The reason for it is, I think the potential for
us to grow is there. It's the greatest opportunity for growth.
I mean, we already have two hundred plus million fans
here in the States, so we're not giving up on
the States and continuing to expand here. But the international
is just it's an open market force. We're introducing the game,
(01:11:36):
we're sharing our game, and the fans are reacting to
it in an extraordinary way. So we're excited about our potential. Yes,
I do see sixteen regular season games. I think that
will happen sometime in the very near future. Wow, how
far out in the future? Deal within five years?
Speaker 3 (01:11:51):
Probably sixteen international games? Are you getting getting me?
Speaker 2 (01:12:01):
They just trying to water the product down and make
everybody tired and not want to play football.
Speaker 1 (01:12:07):
It is unbelievable when you sit back and you think
about how the games are being played, where they're being played,
And Marcus and I had this conversation earlier. You think
Jerry Jones is going to give up one of his
home games to go play internationally for other people. He
already knows that the Cowboys are big enough to have that.
(01:12:30):
So I don't believe that this should be What is
it all about?
Speaker 3 (01:12:36):
I don't get it.
Speaker 1 (01:12:38):
I really don't understand all this international stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:12:40):
But the positive, if there is a positive, we.
Speaker 1 (01:12:44):
Get to watch games eight o'clock in the morning, nine
o'clock in the morning on Sunday and be able to
watch games all day long.
Speaker 2 (01:12:53):
So that could be pretty cool. Well, it's good to
be able to have football all the time. But like
even iron ware is out, these guys are gonna start
traveling and they're gonna get tight and cramped up, and
you're gonna have more injuries.
Speaker 3 (01:13:05):
It's just no way around it. Like I understand what
that is.
Speaker 2 (01:13:12):
I've traveled from Los Angeles to Australia to have wrestling
matches and when you get off that plane, you feel
like you're sixty years old and you have to Once
you warm up, you fine, but if you ever have
a cool down period, like you have to start the
process all over again now, and then you got to
(01:13:32):
come back home, different time zone, and they're not staying
for a week, guys to hang out and see the sights.
They're going over there, they play, and then they're getting
on a plane they come in twenty two hours right
back and if you're in New York, oh my gosh,
what a long trip.
Speaker 3 (01:13:53):
Yeah, it's a very very interesting concept. And there's so
much that is going into this. I can't wait to
see what's ending up happening.
Speaker 1 (01:14:03):
As he said, five years from now, this will be
the conversation tonight. We got NBA, the Knicks and the
Pacers will tip off their basketball games tonight. Yeah, everybody's screaming,
let's go NIXT, let's go next side. So we're gonna
see what exactly is going we outside. We're gonna see
how that plays itself out. Also, that game tonight is.
Speaker 3 (01:14:27):
Going to be not SGA. He already had his time.
Speaker 1 (01:14:33):
The game tonight is going to be big because it
is a rivalry renewed. It is going to be the
Pacers and the Knicks to get themselves into the big
time matchup.
Speaker 3 (01:14:45):
That game will be on T n T.
Speaker 1 (01:14:48):
Also, we have the Dallas Stars as they start their
quest for Lord Stanley's Cup as they get themselves ready
to go.
Speaker 3 (01:15:00):
We also have SEC Tournament.
Speaker 1 (01:15:03):
Yesterday, Alabama defeated Missouri Florida one, Oklahoma defeated Kentucky five
to one. Florida defeated South Carolina eleven to three, Texas
A and M and Mississippi State. That game got canceled
last night, so they will be playing this morning nine
thirty am, followed by number nine Alabama taking on Tennessee
(01:15:28):
Number twelve Oklahoma seeded this is takes on number five seed.
Speaker 3 (01:15:35):
Georgia.
Speaker 1 (01:15:36):
Florida plays tonight against Ole Miss and the winner will
play on Thursday at noon against Georgia. So all these
games have a lot of meaning to them. Texas plays
tomorrow at two. We'll have coach Slasnegle on in the
morning with us along with Eric Henry of Horns twenty four.
Speaker 3 (01:15:59):
To seven Ronson or Halliburton. I'm going Halliburton because you're
going Bronson. That's you mean you're a New York Nick fan.
Let's not get it twisted. We'll see what happens as
this game continues to roll on.
Speaker 1 (01:16:15):
I want to thank Mark Henry. I want to thank
my guy Marcus again.
Speaker 3 (01:16:18):
If you missed any.
Speaker 1 (01:16:19):
Part of the show, get over to the podcast page
you can hear Danny Davis interview and of course softball
coach Mike White. Until tomorrow, folks, make sure y'all have
a great day and just remember this. Don't believe everything
you see, because even salt looks like sugar.
Speaker 3 (01:16:35):
Peace.
