Mike Hartes, mister Eric Henry from Horns two four seven.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Good morning, Ken Fox, Good morning Austin, got the Henry
new to the building. Hold your down my best. You know,
I can't exactly sound like Hard, but.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
I will feel, you know, hards back in the day, Mark,
I think you know this. Remember how Hard used to
have that little Jerry Curle looking like slim from the wood. Yes, yes,
we got to get a picture that we could post
up right.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yeah, I'm dead serious.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Man like this is this is awesome man to be
able to for me and you the law office.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Henry, Henry and the associate to be on today.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Man, hopefully heart is listening and realize that we wish
him a great vacation.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
It's you know, it's as much needed.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
You know, we were in a business where once we
get rolling, Uh, the season is not going to end
until the national Championship in December. So to be able
to roll from now to December straight on, you need
to get a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Of a little rest and relaxation if you will. We'll bark.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
I laugh a little bit when you say December, because man,
listen to the way college ball season is.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
That's just the SEC title game, right, That's and that's
what I'm thinking. If we can get through the title game,
then I'm good. You good man. That's the championship.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
That's that's lightning and striking twice in the same place.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
But you know, tall, regular listeners, the live is up.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
We are ready. We are out there. Uh.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
If you did not download the free iHeart app, please
do so right now and lock us in the morning
kickoff and your presets.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
No doubt about it. So one of the biggest things
I know. First of our shot to Corey Mosea cave
you for pinchhitting while you were out Mark last week,
so phitting Friday shot to Corey. One of the things
we got into that I definitely want to run back
this week with you back in the building is what
are you most excited for?
Speaker 3 (02:47):
We've made it.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
We've made it through the off season on this Texas
Longhorn Monday and the Horns gonna hit the practice field
this week.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Mark, what do you what are you most excited for? Man?
Speaker 2 (02:56):
The most the thing that I'm the most excited about
is is what everybody's been talking about.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Everybody you know.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
It's like, if you don't start with Arch Manning, then
something is wrong with you. You've been under a rock somewhere.
I want to see Arch command the offense. I want
to see him break the huddle. I want to see
what that looks like as the as the guy. I
want to see Arch. His communication with coach sarkisian because
(03:25):
people underestimate how I wouldn't say that he was more
on the docile side, but quin yours. He would run
to coach Sark and he would listen, and you got
to listen. But he also would communicate and he you
could see him talking to coach Sark, but he did
(03:48):
like a little, you know, more subtle communication when when
Arch was in the game, when Arch came to the sideline,
you know, he kind of walked like Peyton, you know,
he had that he had that that swagger to him
as he came off the field and he's pointing, you know.
And maybe that's a young guy thing or maybe that's
(04:10):
just his personality, but whatever it is, watching the two
quarterbacks and how they communicate with the coach is important
to me.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Yeah, you know, it's interesting you made that You talked
about his personality, right because having covered Quinn for three years,
that's the thing that I always took away from Quinn
is his personality is that it's I don't want to
say reserve, but Quinn's a little shy, right and I'm
not saying shy with his teammates. But he's never gonna
be that Peyton Manning. Like you said, when you saw
Peyton Manning with the Colts, he was I need my
(04:40):
guy here, I need this here coming off the field,
very demonstrative. That could be something that Art having grown
up in a football family, a quarterback family, you may
see more of that.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
That's something that's a good point. I didn't even think
about it like that.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
I didn't.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
I didn't think, Okay, maybe he's reliving what he saw
as a young guy seeing his uncles uh communicate using
their hands and telling people what to do. And you know,
sometimes that could easily be a it could be a farce.
You could be doing that just to trick people in
(05:16):
and thinking no, no, hot hot, just like Peyton was
a genius with the omaha omaha.
Speaker 5 (05:22):
Well well for one, we know, doing well as a kid,
he was out there, pretended that he was his uncle's
out there.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Point and all the kids in the neighborhood hated him.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
They were like, or just throw the ball. You know
I'm throwing I'm running out man. You the all time quarterback?
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Come on now, oh listen, that's a term that a
lot of people don't know, like when you had to
play quarterback for both teams?
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Like, how do you.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Get joy out of winning if you have to play
quarterback for both? But I remember if you was the
all time quarterback, that was the greatest position that you
could have, uh, in the in the in the park,
in the sand lot.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Like that was a great thing.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
But yeah, man, those those are the ones that arch
is my number one. But I also want to see
this running back room come back to the level that
it was before backs got hurt.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
And you know, I can say this right and piggybacking
off of you and talking about this running back room,
I think, and I don't know how you guys feel
about it, but my thing has always been this since
I've been covering Texas football. Defense is going to hit
the ground running quicker than offense. Right, that's just a byproduct,
especially when you have so many moving parts for new
offensive linemen right bringing in you're trying to get the
(06:43):
pass pro down, you're trying to get start start starters
exactly when I get to the program, And if Steve
Starkey heard me say that, he would quickly say that
they're not young, they're inexperienced, that they're not young.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
Right.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
But to that point, right, I am super interested to
see the things that a young quarterback can lean on
run game tight end with Jack injuries, right, that's a
name that I think all Texas fans should.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Know, need to know.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
My firmly believe he's going to be first team All
Conference come the end of the year. But for me personally, Mark,
it's this defense, man, because I think this defense is
going to be the tops in the nation. When you
have All American at every level, Colin Simmons on the
first level, Anthony Hill on the second level, Michael taff
on the back end. I think if they hit the
ground running come August thirty, they can take Texas into
(07:28):
Ohio State and leave with the victory. So that's what
I'm looking forward to see in this first week.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
Yeah, I mean the defense is definitely you know, my
third thing that I just they're given to me. Sure,
I feel like this defense has the potential to be
what Georgia was two years ago and what Texas was
last year.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
I mean, they can be as good or better. No,
there's no doubt about that. And here's the thing that
I think a lot of people, when you talk about
this defense, it kind of goes under, you know, under
just a little bit, right is this you have players
such as Colin Simmons, such as Leongo Lafoul, such as
Warren Roberson, Malik Muhammad, the list goes on, Kobe Black.
(08:11):
These are all guys that are just scratching the surface
of their potential right, and we saw how well the
defense fared last year. And something that I think is
interesting is be a little teaser we'll get to a
little bit later.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
In the show.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
Mark is how the culture of Texas football. This is
on the defensive end, it's permeating down. All the young
guys are starting to see man that worked for Johnny Baron,
that worked for Michael Taff, that worked for Jalen Ford,
let me just do it this way right. That to me, again,
I just think is huge in developing the culture and
the identity of this year's Texas football team.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
And also to add to that, the defense was great
last year, but Jelena McDonald was injured. Now you're going
to have him come back in derk Wood. Derek Williams
was injured and he's going to come back in And
you add that to Jelena McDonald, and you have two
(09:01):
guys that can spell Michael Taff if he decides to
have to play more of the outside guy, the jack
the star the star role, like you can move and
mix that team around. That defense could be really scary,
(09:21):
really fast.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
And we haven't even gotten to some of the big
boys up front, right, I know, Mark, you want to
talk about the big boys.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Although, yeah, on.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
Both sides of the ball, defensive tackle. This is the
thing that I'm really interested in seeing, Mark, is you
bring in five transfers, right, you bring back Alex January
legacy kid. But the thing and we were listening to
some sound before the show started, Travis Shaw, Cole Barvard,
guys who were north of three hundred pounds. Are they
gonna play forty to fifty snaps a game? Are they
(09:52):
best suited to play twenty five to thirty snaps game?
Especially when you talk about guys like Brevard and Shaw
and others, even Maroad watching the Freshman All American f
Sara Mark, they didn't play the amount of snaps that
Alfred Collins, Vernon Broughton, Devandre Sweat, Byron Murphy played the
last two years.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
Right, So if you know you got to go to
long haul, well.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
That's why you have next week. That's why next week
is gonna be. This is the first two weeks of
training camp. They're gonna get so many reps right that
you'll know who has the endurance. You'll know who, Uh,
maybe I should play him more goal line? Maybe I
should play this guy in this situation. Uh, they've already
(10:30):
kind of got a bead on it now because of
spring and this summer of football. But I really do
feel like coach Sark is a great evaluator of time
and and what his players have been able to do.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
He's proved it over the last three years. They think
he's proved over the last three years. And Kenny Baker,
he has not gotten enough love.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Right.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Remember when Bo Davis.
Speaker 4 (10:51):
Left, everybody thought everybody thought it was over the conversations
what are you gonna do without Bo Davis? Kenny Baker
comes in previously Western Kentucky, one year as a lower
level assistant with Miami Dolphins, and he's proven his worth,
no doubt about that.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
Mark.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
So that's the first segment in The Morning Kickoff. Will
be back AM thirteen hundred. The Zone, Mark Henry, Eric Henry,
Henry men in the building, Mike cars Well, deserve vacation,
We'll be back. Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff AM
thirteen hundred. The Zone, Mike Harje, Mark Henry, filling in
the hardball hard Eric Henris, the Henry men in the
(11:27):
building on this Texas Longhorn Monday, and we are going
to keep the Texas football talk gone because, as we mentioned,
the weight is over. The offseason is officially in the
rare view mirror as the Texas Longhorns return to the
practice field this week. Definitely got to keep it going. Mark,
he threw this topic ball, we got, we got football.
(11:49):
You threw this out there. I thought this was really interesting,
this topic you threw out there. Three things that could
derail Texas football in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Yeah, I mean, you never want to think negatively, and
I'm not thinking negatively.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
I'm I'm an optimist for the most part.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
But the number one thing is injury. Injury is always
and I'm not talking about the tight end, uh.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
That's injuries.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
But the injury can derail, you know, but every position
Texas has depth, so I don't feel like you may
have some unproven guy if an injury pops up to anybody.
Not being specific to any position, I'm just saying overall
in the totality. The second thing I feel like can
(12:39):
derail is two losses. Anytime that you have two losses
back to back or something like that, which we haven't
seen in three years. So I think something like that
will start the boo birds, like what is Kosark doing?
Speaker 3 (12:59):
You know that kind of thing? Uh?
Speaker 2 (13:01):
And and third and lastly, I think that the thing
that can derail UH is dissension of players.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
And we're going to talk about that.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Uh in the hard knock life, like there's a sometimes
players they get cross with.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Each other and started an argument.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
I told hard the story about you know, me and
high school, our quarterback and our wide receiver at Salesby
were fighting over a girl and we're we're we're in
the playoffs and he wouldn't throw them the ball and
tried to run it and got tackled.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
Like we we we could have went, we could have
went to the semi final.
Speaker 5 (13:45):
So your high school had a whole Jason Kids mall
mass Yeah we did.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
We had a Tony Braxton incident. Man, So like that.
Those are the three things I feel like in derail
UH team's effort to trying to be a champion in
the conference and nationally.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
Mark, I'm gonna go back to your first point, which
is injuries, and this question it's not meant to be rhetorical,
So I'll give you a shot. When's the last time
in Steve Sarkisian's era, that they've played only one quarterback
the entire season.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
Ooh, I can't think of it.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
They haven't every year in Steve Sarkasian's tenure, they've had
an injury at quarterback Quin yours every year he was
a starter. Remember he got knocked out against Alabama, He
got knocked out in twenty twenty three, and of course
got knocked out last year. Right, it's been a long
time since Texas has only played one quarterback. The reason
I mentioned that when you talk about injuries is yes,
(14:42):
to your point, Texas has death at every single position. However,
and if I will, if I may use Steve Sarkisian's
phrase of we're not young, we're inexperienced.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
Same thing with backup quarterback.
Speaker 4 (14:54):
That is a competition Marcus and Mark that I'm keeping
my eye on throughout all of fall camp. They brought
did Matthew Calwell, the kid from Troy Right now, obviously,
going from the Sun Belt to the SCC that's like
going you know, Mark, that's like going from from the
indies to wrestling WrestleMania, Right, it's a big time jump.
Is he someone who can step in not even a
(15:14):
full time starter at Troy, started five games. Where does
he fall? We're just Trey Owens. Trey Owens looks the
part six four two twenty five kid out of SI
Fair Houston, Texas right looks the part but inexperience. Where
does kJ Lacey, a true freshman come in? So you
want to knock on wood that arch Manning, I guess
I'm knocked on the table. Not quite would but r.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Arch Manning.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
But but Sark is one of those coaches who will
try to get their guys for parents regardless.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
I can see him.
Speaker 5 (15:45):
Hopefully in more blowout situations if Texas get that, they
can get some of the backup guys in there, get.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Some give him a chance to get some reps, get
some reps from their experience.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
And that's been something that Steve actually is dedicated time
in the non conference games. He kind of took a
little bit of heat. I believe it was last year
when he referred to the non conference games as preseason. Right,
people you know read that saying, oh Man preseason, Like
is he disrespecting the other teams? No, He's saying, hey,
if we can use games ideally for taking care of
business against San Jose State against Sam Houston State.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
To get some backups in.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
That will help so that down the road if those
guys are called on to you guys points.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
I'm not afraid of that though.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
Trey Owens, like, you watch what he did last year. Yeah,
and you watch what he did in the spring.
Speaker 3 (16:32):
All he did is light it up and go ahead,
Mars AND's a Sarks point.
Speaker 5 (16:39):
It is like preseason you have you have more playoff
spots now and you're in the SCC. So if you
if you run, you run a table on the SCC,
regardless of what you do in a non conference game,
you're gonna be one of the twelve.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
Well, you want that mentality for your team because there's
a lot of these kids that come into your universe
to Texas and they want to be a NFL football player.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
That's their dream.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
They want to play for Texas, they want to play
in college, they want to play in high Division one.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
But the ultimate goal, I want to play in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
And Steve is given that and that that's one of
the payments that and we're going to talk about that too.
You know, like when you when you try to convince
somebody that hey, I'm gonna.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
Sell you this.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
You know, this bill of goods. What's the pros and
the cons. That's one of the pro no doubt about it.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
And to come to your second point, when you talked
about losing back to back games, I see you've got
your field stilled with shout to Phil somebody always does
a great job. Got to in front of you, Mark,
this is a stretch when Texas goes to Florida that
they will well just because.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
You're from Florida. I don't go doing that. Hey on,
hear me out.
Speaker 4 (17:51):
This is what I'm saying, because listen, I was not
raised a Gator fan.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
All right.
Speaker 4 (17:55):
As a working journalist, I'm a fan of no team,
but I was a raised a Gator fan. I'm not
going there. What I am saying is, they don't play
in Austin for a month. They're gonna be away from
home territory for a month. Right, You've got to go
to Florida, right river shootout. Brent Venables needs to win
in the worst way and the worst way, all right,
so that's gonna be challenging. And then of course you
(18:15):
go to Kentucky to Mississippi State. Two teams that let's
just call a spade as paid.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
They're not. They should be.
Speaker 4 (18:21):
They should be, but you know just how Texas is
everybody's super Bowl. Then folks in Lexington, Kentucky, then folks
starting Mississippi.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
Are gonna be fired up.
Speaker 4 (18:29):
They're probably gonna be having some adult beverages throughout the
morning to get.
Speaker 3 (18:34):
Themselves ready to go. They drink moonshine in Kentucky.
Speaker 5 (18:38):
And those two games being on the road is especially
with so many home games, it will wear on you
that those games will be closer than previously expected.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
That's the point, Marcus is those listen, Texas should win
those games. But you know what, those folks are gonna
be fired up. They want to give Texas the fans.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
They want to give them everything they have.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
So those are two games to keep an eye on
to make sure, Hey, not them saying you're gonna lose.
But you don't want to your point, Mark, you don't
want the snowball effect.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
Yeah, no, not at all. The derailment is real. So
what's your third thing? My third thing, to be completely
honest with you, is it's the big boys up front.
I want to know the continuity on the offensive line.
How quickly can that come together?
Speaker 4 (19:24):
Because I'm a big believer offensive line as much as
it is a skill position thing. In Mark, I covered
Group of five football for six years. No disrespective G
five's the skill can't match up with SEC. But when
you've been through the walls, you've been through the summers,
you've played together two three years, I know what that
left guard is doing in my center. I know how
to communicate. That to me is huge. So how quickly
(19:46):
can Kyle Flood build that with this offensive line and
that defensive tackle?
Speaker 3 (19:49):
Can those guys hold up an entire season?
Speaker 2 (19:51):
That's good, that's good, But I still think that that
last one to me is guys are fighting over my
not at Texas because you have a great team leader.
You know, people say that, you know this, Steve Sarkesian
is not just a football coach, but he's also.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
A general manager.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
He's a He's a guy that basically psychiatrist like he's
everything rolled in the one. Which is why Texas pays
him the big bucks. Is he's a guy that had
experience and trained under two of the best coaches of
all time and Nick Saban And you know right now,
(20:36):
the current coach at the Raiders, Pete Carroll, was his mentor,
so like, when you have guys that have that kind
of experience, he can fix it. But there's a lot
of teams that don't. And you, my friend, are going
to be talking about that in The Hard Knock Life.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
So I'm excited about this. This is a preview session
of the review of The hards Knocked Life.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
We even though Mike harg is on vacation, Eric Henry
is gonna deliver the goods and we'll be doing that
here in just a few minutes.
Speaker 4 (21:10):
Yeah, and one quick thing to bring us back full
circle with the discussion here. You talked about things that
can derail and how Steve Sarkejan says the tone. Here's
someone else who sets the tone, Arch Manning. When arch
Manning comes in, someone who could take ten million dollars
in nil fund, right in nil money and says, you
know what, I'm.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
Not gonna take it. I'm not gonna take it.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
That sets the tone for the rest of the team
all the way down. Now, listen, not every player comes
from the same circumstance as arch Manning, but that helps
send the message.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
In my mind, Mark, Yeah, I mean historically, this is
something that's gonna be talked about for a long long
time because Arch didn't do that.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
There you go more.
Speaker 4 (21:47):
Than kickoff AM thirteen hundred The Zone, Mike harj Mark
Henry filling in Harball Hart Eric Henry twenty four to
seven Sports that Henry men in the building.
Speaker 3 (21:57):
We will be back and thirteen hundred zone. More thing
to kick off.
Speaker 4 (22:01):
AM thirteen hundred zone Morning kickoff Mike Harball Hard World
strongest Man, Mark Henry sitting in Harball Hart, Eric Henry
twenty four seven Sports and Horace twenty four seventh A
little bit of mystical bringing us back in the building.
I was disappointed, Marcus Mark. We had Corey filling in
last week. He didn't know the mystical and I'm like,
(22:22):
I just turned thirty four.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
No, wait time time.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
He did not know him. No clue, No, he had
no clue. So listen, I just turned thirty four, Corey.
If my members first bat is twenty eighth, that much
is that?
Speaker 1 (22:36):
Is that?
Speaker 2 (22:37):
It's that much of a difference, only six my son?
Yeah you know, I'm I'm you remember the song south Side?
Speaker 3 (22:43):
Yeah? Yeah, you know, So like all of these, this
is all brand new to him.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
He never heard twenty four lighters on my dresser. Yes, sir,
none of the Houston music that I grew up listening to.
He heard none of it and now he love it.
I was like, Jacob, this is old. This shoot man,
this is live.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
I said, yeah, yeah it is.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
But I didn't realize that again, just sixty years different
young people, man, they different, They different.
Speaker 4 (23:11):
So I had to give Corey hard times. Like I said,
you know, I'm thirty four to twenty eight. I expect
him to no mistical. But nevertheless, Harz Knox's life segment
coming up here right now in the morning kick off,
And this is something that I definitely want to get into.
Is this nil discussion Mark piggybacking off of what you
were talking about. One of the things that could derail
Texas football being conflict in the locker room. There's a
(23:32):
story that came out I believe Mike Florio's want to
report it over NBC Sports talking about Mike Loxley, the
Maryland head coach who is quote here directly, especially was
Michael David Smith NBC Sports. But the quote here is
Mike Loxley said this a year ago. Coach Lockes lost
his locker room. We've had haves and have nots. For
(23:54):
the first time, the landscape of college football taught me
a valuable lesson in terms of paying his players, talking
about they had to attract new recruits, so you want
to have the nil funds for them, but how do
you also reward the veteran players? And I think it's
you know, one of the reasons Mark and Marcus why
I believe Texas is best set up or one of
the best programs in nation in terms of how they're
(24:14):
set up to handle this is a the funding is there.
We know the funding is there, right, but Steve Starkeshan
general manager, Brandon Harris, it all trickles down the way
they handle things. For example, there is talk about why
isn't Texas getting certain recruits?
Speaker 3 (24:34):
Is Texas liwton? Are they missing it? They slipping? No,
it's not that.
Speaker 4 (24:38):
It's why am I going to pay a big time
recruit an exorbitant amount of money? But I know I
still have because we don't have contracts in place, Mark,
I still have players on my roster who may come
to me next year and want to renegotiate players on
my roster who may earn more funding, more of a
(24:58):
salary more of more income.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
That to me is huge.
Speaker 4 (25:03):
So to bring it back full circle, the reason why
this I want to make this my hars knocks life.
I'm passionate about it. These coaches. I'm not saying you
can use Texas a model for everything. However, if you're
a big time Division I program, a big time FBS program.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
Who is you know?
Speaker 4 (25:23):
Mark, I'm curious how Texas Tech is going to handle
this because they're throwing out money, which they have the
ability to do, and that's great for them.
Speaker 3 (25:30):
But what happens when you have a player who says, Hey.
Speaker 4 (25:34):
I'm better, I'm performing better in practice, Mark, I had
six sacks this season. I performed on the field. I'm
performing better than this person in practice. But just because
you agreed to remember Felix Ojo's deal fully guaranteed.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
Yeah, what if he is a bus What if that's
something that hasn't been put out there yet.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
What if?
Speaker 4 (25:54):
So that to me is why I think and Texas
is not the only program that's handling things in this
manner right, But we're just using it because in the sake,
we're here in Austin, Texas, We're in long Horn Country.
It's a long horn Monday, So we're going to talk
about the horns they've been I don't think Steve Starkas
and Brandon Harris have got enough credit for the way
they've been able to manage the changing landscape, the evolving
(26:14):
landscape of Nil. And I'll give you one more in
terms of how I think this is specific to Steve.
How many coaches in the nation you know that would
have fumbled the arch manning Quinn Yours relationship a lot?
Speaker 2 (26:30):
It would have been very difficult to say. You know,
you listen to people like Paul Feinnbaum, who was like,
why would you not put Arch in the game when
Quinn was obviously struggling. There were times where he was
you could tell he was injured, or you could tell
that something was up, but we didn't know the extent
(26:51):
of his injury because he was a tough guy.
Speaker 4 (26:54):
And he didn't sell it and mark something that and
you can appreciate this. Sometimes a guy just earns the
locker room, right. That's the thing we can tie all
these discussions intogether together in terms of Mike Locksley saying
he lost the locker room, quinn Yours earned the respect
of that locker room.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
Let's let's not forget this.
Speaker 4 (27:15):
A lot of last year's roster, those are guys that
came in with Quinn, the Jade Barons, the you know
insert you know veteran, A lot of the veterans on
the offensive line. These are all guys who twenty two
they played with Quinn u or saw him go down,
saw him come back, guide the team to eight wins.
Twenty twenty three, they saw Quin yours go down, cut
(27:36):
his way back, come back and lead this team to
a national semi final appearance. Right same thing in twenty
twenty four. So you run the risk, in my opinion,
of losing the locker room. If Steve Sarkjian panics says,
all right, I'm gonna go to arch Manning, well, then
what does that say for a guy who's trying to
work his way upon the deaf chart, saying, man, this
dude's out there finding his way through injuries, coming back early, and.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
Then he gets benched for injury.
Speaker 4 (27:59):
So again, to bring it back full circle, just the
way that Steve Sarkisan in Texas, there are things you
can critique. We will talk this week while I'm in
here for Harje about the red zone. We'll talk about
the goal line. We'll find plenty of things to critique
Steve Sarkisian about now. I don't think he's gotten enough
credit for the way they've managed his locker room. With
the evolving changing landscape of college football.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
Mark, Yeah, well, I'll tell you what man I may.
Speaker 2 (28:22):
I wrote down two notes while you were giving the
hardnock's life. And number one, let lord be important, and
you can tell that to every quarterback that comes here
from now on. And number two is you can't pay
when you have pro starters already. You can't pay a
(28:44):
rookie pro starter money. I can't do it, guys, because
I'm giving you. And the third thing was I'm giving
you something or you're buying into the fact that we
put guys into pros. We're gonna give you more of
an opportunity to be what you want to be, what
(29:06):
you dream about because you came here to this university.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
I can see that.
Speaker 5 (29:11):
You know, the players trust start because I can see
him as a guy he haven't been wrong yet.
Speaker 3 (29:16):
Yeah, he's a guy with a plan.
Speaker 5 (29:18):
He tells the plan, he doesn't deviate from the plan,
so the players trust him because he's honest with him
up front. You might lose some guys from coming, but
they the guys who come will trust you one hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
And when they get here and they see that there's
a pick in order, it's just like being in the military,
you know, Like I grew up around military guys. My
uncle Andrew, who just passed away, and I went to
his funeral yesterday or Saturday. He was a military guy,
and he used to tell us, you know, like, hey, y'all,
(29:53):
y'all gonna understand the chain of command. If Paul Paul first,
meet second, and then we'll talk about y'all. That's Coach
Sark is not. I don't think that he's military, but
he runs a very structured program and.
Speaker 4 (30:08):
The people have bought in. And then you followed that
with that's what I do. That's what we do, no
doubt about it. Morning Kickoff AM thirteen hundred Zone. Eric
Henry in for Hardball Hars World strongest Man Mark Henry
will be back Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone Morning
(30:28):
Kickoff Hardball Hars, Mark Henry. Eric Henry sitting in for
Hardball Hart all week before we get to a little
more of Texas football talk. Hars did remind me to
do this, So let me do this for our brother Hars.
Listen in all week long for your chance to chance
to winning stud me a pair of tickets to see Ghosts.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
August fourteenth.
Speaker 4 (30:49):
App Moody Center to enter, download the iHeartRadio apps, search
AM thirteen hundred zone, tap the red microphone and leave
us a message with the keyword you heard on the radio.
And today's keyword ISPs. Today's keyword is opus. So listen
all week get those keywords. But fellas keeping the Texas
(31:09):
football talk going. One of the things we've talked about
is how do you keep a cohesive locker room? And
you know, when we had a chance to talk with
some of the Texas players at SEC Media Days, there
was a quote from Michael Taff, of course, in one
of the veteran leaders Austin Native. Everyone knows Michael Taff's story,
and I wanted to make sure that that was talked
about here on the air.
Speaker 3 (31:28):
Marcus.
Speaker 4 (31:29):
And if you have that sound of Michael Taff talking
about the culture and how it permeates down Mark and
I just were talking about this, Marcus can toss that sound.
Listen to Michael Taff talking about Kobe Black picking up
the culture.
Speaker 6 (31:40):
I know when when we hype up all these guys
and there's so many storylines about them, But I'll let
Kobe's Kobe's field play do all the talking because he's
a really good guy. He's a really good football player,
but also a better friend. And I armbered one time
I was trying to, you know, help the freshman and
(32:00):
maybe I wasn't leading, you know, a good way, or
maybe I wasn't being a good teacher, but they couldn't
understand the concept why I was trying to tell him right,
And Kobe finally stood up. He was like, dude, whatever
Michael Taff says, whatever Johnny Barron says, just do it.
If it doesn't make sense, it doesn't make sense, just
do it because they know they have the recipe for success.
Speaker 4 (32:21):
Well, well, I was going to ask you, Mark, when
you heard that, I think you're hearing for the first time.
What comes to mind there when you hear that leadership
and sometimes everybody that teaches might not have all the
newest information, but out of respect for the position you
(32:42):
we talked about chain of command, follow the orders, and
you know what, even generals have to be corrected, even
the captain sometimes has to be told.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
You know what, we don't do it like that anymore.
You know, like so like things change, and but as.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
Long as you're a good soldier and you follow the orders,
then everybody else is fine. Everybody's on the same page.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
The reason that stood out to me is, you know,
so much was made at the culture mark. I remember
one of the first assignments that happened I started covering
the team was Big twelve Media Day twenty twenty three,
and I saw with Jordan Winnington asking them what's different?
Speaker 3 (33:19):
Right?
Speaker 4 (33:19):
Why is Texas being back quote unquote back? Why is
this year different than all the times in the past
we thought they were back? And Jay Witt said, I
don't know the way to say to you, Eric, We
just we rock with each other. We rock with each
other on and off the field. Right, how do you
keep that culture going? I was curious about the team building.
Speaker 3 (33:39):
That team building I hard to get some man.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
We're going to talk about this tomorrow because the Cowboys
and Texans. We're going to do a lot of NFL
talk tomorrow, guys. So along with our University of Texas analysis,
we're also going to give you the NFL coach shot
Haimer brought in team building. He started bringing in older
(34:03):
players to play games, to have movie nights, team and
family nights, and all of these things that the Cowboys
have never done.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
You know, the Cowboys historically have been the white house
US well against there. You know what I'm saying that
they've been.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
They've been very you know, like, let's keep it, let's
keep it our in house, our in house, let's let's
let's let's let's have fun, and let's let's do us.
Now it's a it's a wean thing. They're bringing in
the families. They they want them to be more sound
as far as hey, go get some rest. We don't
(34:42):
want you up all night.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
Mark.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
That was a lot of we going on then too,
well it was no.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
There was a lot of them going on back then
because everybody was not trying to be signed up for that.
But I'm gonna tell you right now, like that's what
I feel like here in Texas is you have a
bunch of guys that have, for a not a better term,
to find it, bought in and believe and the fact
(35:10):
that the system is working. And if it wasn't working,
then you would see that there would be more dissension.
But because colch Sark has this thing rolling and everything
that he said has come to pass.
Speaker 3 (35:22):
I mean, how do you.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
Argue with eleven and thirteen guys respectively going to the
NFL when in three years ago nobody went zero?
Speaker 3 (35:36):
And I just won't say, how do you argue with that?
Speaker 4 (35:38):
I was gonna say, the pickback off of your point,
mark right, when you're a Kobe Black, right, and it
means so much of a young guy who was a
freshman at the time, right, and the sophomore picks up
on that that he's like, Listen, you talked about Michael
talked about teaching styles, right, Maybe what he was saying
wasn't picking up to the young freshman like man, it's
not making any sense. But Kobe Black is smart enough
(36:00):
and self aware enough to pick up on what you said. Hey,
it worked for Johnny Baron, he's the first round picker.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
Yeah, he worked for them. It worked for Andrew mccooper.
Speaker 4 (36:07):
Andrew mccoopa is looking like he may have a chance
to earn the starting job is here in Philly. It
worked for Michael Taff. Michael Taff is borderline all Americans.
Some people say legit all American.
Speaker 3 (36:15):
Just do it that way.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
It doesn't matter if you don't pick it up now
in two three years. Once you do it enough times,
it'll make sense.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
Mark. Yeah, and from the mud too.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
It's not like that Michael Taff came here highly regarded
and harolded, you know, nationally, Like he's.
Speaker 5 (36:32):
A guy that walked on and to pick it back
on what you guys say, how do they continue this culture?
You continue this culture because these guys are learning more
than just how to be players.
Speaker 3 (36:43):
They're learning how to be leaders and men.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
Coach Shark has put an emphasis on these guys being
responsible people. Yes, like it's very rare, Like we had
a situation a couple of weeks ago where turping at
the Cowboys got arrested having a gun, like Coach Sharks says, guys,
those are the things that derail your life, not just
(37:08):
your football career.
Speaker 3 (37:10):
Like I want you all to be good.
Speaker 2 (37:11):
Men, have kids one day and grandkids and be responsible people.
Speaker 3 (37:16):
I want that as in my coach too, I want
I want a man.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
I want to be comfortable at home with my wife
knowing that my son is okay, that I'm not going
to get that call at three in the morning.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
Hey, we need to bail your son out, Like, don't, don't.
I don't want that.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
Coach Sharks did a good job over this last three
years of keeping guys out the newspaper. But not because
the police are not publishing nothing. It's because nothing is.
Speaker 3 (37:43):
Happening, no doubt about it.
Speaker 4 (37:45):
You talk about culture setters, Michael Taff being one of
the biggest culture setters for Texas football, so it's good
to see that. Continuing into twenty twenty five Morning to Kickoff,
rookie Mike Harges, Mark Henry, Eric Henry sitting in for
Hardball Hart.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
We'll be back in a minute.
Speaker 4 (38:04):
This is Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Morning Kickoff,
World Strongest Man, Mark Henry, Eric Henry sitting in for
Hardball hard It's going on, Mark, We've been.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
So serious, We've been so serious, We've been so such
journalists today, I just got to have some fun. Hard
to know that he's like, oh God, he's finna say something.
How did Michael tab get the name Mookie? Okay?
Speaker 3 (38:30):
So, and do you think.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
That he is the only Mookie in Whistley. I'm just saying, Mark,
it's funny you said we've been such journalists. I came
away entering this week, love the opportunity. Shout out to Hard,
shout to you know, camera Park, for the opportunity to
sit in with y'all.
Speaker 3 (38:48):
I had two objectives.
Speaker 4 (38:49):
One is to continue to show have a great show too,
because he told me that Mark could be a joker.
It's to make sure I still got my job. I
could walk back, sweet, but we could have the conversation
because listen, I've speculated I've wanted the same thing. I've
said that Mookie, that's a that's a very urban nickname,
you know, and say what it really is. It's saying
(39:11):
to say with my chest barts he got a very
urban name.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
No, that isn't That is a nickname that's very synonymous
with black people, no doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (39:21):
And for him to have a name the nickname.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
Mukie like that, that tells me so much about the
way that the players look at him.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
Right. No, that's a good point.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
And if you need that in a brotherhood, no color,
no nothing, brotherhood. And if he is that guy and
the kind of do it to bring in everybody together,
more power to.
Speaker 4 (39:47):
Him and Mark real quick, you know, before we get
into the discussion we're gonna talk. Of course, we talked
about this last Friday with Corey and I feel it
was only right to bring back with you.
Speaker 3 (39:54):
Mark.
Speaker 4 (39:55):
We kind of talked about as far as things that
could derail the season, but I kind of wanted to
ask you in terms of, you know, biggest concerns in
terms of just position groups. So we'll get to that
in a second. But something that you talk about, you know, Mookie,
I think it's interesting the nickname is your play has
to back that up, right, Your play has to back
it up and also and it has and it has
and also and also Mark, you appreciate this. You got
(40:17):
to be authentic, you know, to earn a nickname like
that from from the fellows, from the bros, Like, you
got to be authentic. And that's one thing about Michael Taff.
You can never question his authenticity, right, He's not faking
trying to be someone who's.
Speaker 3 (40:29):
Not so at media day.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
He walks with such swagger and confidence that when he
walks in a room, you don't even have to know
that he's a football player.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
You go, who is that guy?
Speaker 6 (40:42):
What do you do?
Speaker 3 (40:43):
One thousand percent? He walks with like a I mean,
and that would make that the leader of men has
to be that guy Mark. They have to be him.
Speaker 4 (40:54):
Mark is kind of a running inside joke amongst some
of the Texas media beat is that Michael Taff whenever
he's done playing foot ball, you know, it's gonna be
mayor of Austin. It's gonna be Michael Taft. Toyota is
because like you.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
Said, watch ain't no, there's no other way to say it,
but that guy would be a mayor, head coach, a
He's gonna be somebody that's gonna be very influential and
special because of his ability to lead and and and
the confidence factor. It's like Matthew McConaughey. If you ever
(41:27):
met Matthew McConaughey, when Matthew talks, you're looking at him like, man,
are you are you selling me this? You ain't you
ain't real, this is not real. But but he's just
that confident he used to be. He was a bartender
at Catfish Station when I first moved to Austin, and
(41:47):
he would say all the time, this is this is
a stop for me. I'm gonna be famous, like when
you know it and you can like really show everybody
you gotta be and Michael Taff is one of those guys.
Speaker 4 (42:03):
Well said Mark, But to jump into the discussion in
terms of your biggest concern in terms of position groups, Mark,
with Texas football, I can lead off here, and you
know I talked about backup quarterback injuries being a thing
that could derail the season for Texas, but biggest concern
for me, and I talked about the offensive line a
little bit. But this is a nice segue. If I
may do a cheap plug. I wrote this article over
(42:24):
up at Horns twenty four to seven dot com. Come on, man,
communication in the secondary, Mark, And this is the point
I made to Corey last week. I'll make it to
you one of the biggest reasons, the two biggest reasons
we heard from Texas football secondary when they struggled in
the secondary pass defense twenty twenty three, we heard, we
got to do better job tackling communication.
Speaker 3 (42:44):
Well, how do you solve communication.
Speaker 4 (42:45):
You go get and Andrew mccooba, someone who was trained
with Michael Taff, someone who's trained with John A. Barn
from the time they're in middle school, right, So that
built in communication, that built in I can look at Taff.
I can look at mccooba and no, just a little
little eyes, I can know what he's doing.
Speaker 3 (43:02):
Now that's gone.
Speaker 4 (43:03):
Because mccoob's off to the NFL, Jade is off to
the NFL. How do you create again that level of communication,
that level of cohesion? And when I asked Steve Sarkisian
that question at SEC Media Days, one of the things
he said, ironically Mark and Marcus was you would think
you have Michael Taff and he's gonna be the guy
who's gonna just take the mantle right and be the
(43:25):
main voice back there. But they said, no, they want
to they muzzle Taff during the spring. We want a
Derek Williams, We want a Jelani McDonald, a Malik Muhammad.
These guys to find their voice right so they can
know how to communicate. So that way, it's not just
what happens if Michael Taff goes down, right, then we
don't have anybody can communicate. No, now we're building a
secondary of guys who all can communicate.
Speaker 3 (43:46):
So y'all get that inside information right there. That's that inside.
Speaker 1 (43:51):
Man.
Speaker 3 (43:52):
Look at it up. You come in more often. Listen.
I can't wally pick Mike Hard you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (43:59):
The herdsment a base. He'll get that reference. But we
love it when you call in. We love it because
we always get something out of it. And that was
a case right there where you get the inside information
that you don't get. And my number one concern is
(44:20):
there gonna be enough carries for Trey Wigerer because now
with Baxter back.
Speaker 3 (44:27):
Baxter he was the star back.
Speaker 2 (44:31):
He was the guy that was supposed to carry him
to the championship, the hammer, and you were the nail.
Speaker 3 (44:40):
And now they.
Speaker 2 (44:42):
Washington showed up big last year and he's gained ten pounds.
No fact, he wants to be more of a hammer
because he knows that Baxter's back. So now you've elevated
your offensive output at the running back position.
Speaker 4 (45:01):
Is there gonna be enough carries? It's it's a it's
an interesting and how do you delegate that? It's an
interesting question? Mark and I would say this right, So
let me start with contree von Wisner because he's someone
who I'm glad that he earned the recognition of being
a preseason All SEC first teamer because he's a thousand
yard rusher. I believe my memory sharts correct the loan
(45:21):
thousand yard Russer returning in the SEC. But something that
he talked about, Mark, that gives me optimism for the
Texans running back room. And I'm gonna tie it all
in together in terms of your point, because when we
spoke with Trey in the spring, he said, I didn't
feel comfortable making guys miss right because remember the big
issue for Texas football last year in terms of the
running backs, those guys hold onto the football. He said,
(45:42):
I was just worried about getting my five yards, hanging
on to the football and making sure I can live
to see another down. This year, he said, the thing
he's worked on is being more elusive, making guys missing
the open field. Now to your question, I think if
Trey Weisner can carry that load the first four weeks
for five weeks, that gives CJ. Baxter room to find
(46:02):
his footing back coming back from that knee injury, then
I'm playing the long game here, Mark, I'm playing the
long game. I think with the way Quen Trayvon wisers,
if his game excels and elevates, that gives CJ time
to find his footing come week ten, week eleven, week twelve.
Then you're talking about having a two headed monster that
is good, if not the best, possibly not just in
(46:26):
the SEC, but one of the top one to two
duos in the nation. And I think in terms of
the running back room with the carries, we'll fill it
out early on. Don't forget about baby Rhyano, Jared Gibson
as well and Clark.
Speaker 3 (46:39):
So my thing is this play the long game the CJ. Baxter. Okay,
I'm gonna let you.
Speaker 5 (46:45):
And if you got those two, that two headed monthster
running through in the whole season, what does that cause
for the rest of the team Offensively? That means that
inexperienced line gets to push people around.
Speaker 3 (46:56):
You take pressure off off of Art.
Speaker 5 (47:00):
And then those those passing plays become even deeper passing
plays because now you've got safeties plays.
Speaker 3 (47:06):
Play action because they playing so close to the line
of screen.
Speaker 4 (47:08):
Yes, no doubt about it. And here's something else that
I think you know kind of went a little bit
under the radar last year. Is this right in terms
of Texas football on the run game, and you know,
maybe the times in the struggle against georgiast Ohio State,
you gotta stay on schedule, right as an offense, you
gotta go first down, pick up three four yards, you
stay on, glad, Mark.
Speaker 3 (47:28):
What hit me just now is.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
If you have that that that that Wisner, and you
have CJ. Baxter in the game against Ohio State and
you can run directly at people and they can't stop you,
do they win?
Speaker 3 (47:49):
Do they do?
Speaker 2 (47:50):
Do they lose that game because the call that coach
Stark made they moved laterally right and the defense was
able to flow to the ball. But if you running
directly at you and you can't stop it, and then Archie,
I've seen Peyton Manning run into the end zone with
(48:10):
nobody around him before because they had such a powerful
running game with Edrin James.
Speaker 3 (48:17):
What if that's what Texas becomes.
Speaker 2 (48:20):
Where you can run directly at people and then you
have a quarterback that his speed got up to twenty
two miles per hour, pull it and then just run
around the end like So there's so many more options
that I feel like has afforded them because of a
powerful running game.
Speaker 4 (48:38):
No, Mark, I'll give you this to amplify your point, right,
and I'm going to publish this article later this week.
I looked at every Texas offensive play last year, went
through the the PDFs of each play offensively, and I
pulled out short yards and goal line because I wanted
to see how well what is Steve Sarkigen calling when
it's three yards or less, when it's two yards or less,
when it's red zone, when it's goal line, and this
(48:59):
is That's what I found that was interesting. There's success
rate in terms of conversions. Granted, small sample size with Arch,
but it was a little bit better because in my opinion,
and I have to go back to look at the
plays actually visually, when you have the threat of Arch
running right, that's another thing the defense has to account for.
So your offensive you know, your your place sheet, your
your call sheet is expanded in those short yardage, in
(49:23):
those red zone, in those goal line areas, right and
into your point in terms of the power running game right.
When you have that building, you can do more things.
But we certainly will get into that and much more.
Morning Kickoff AM thirteen hundred Zone, Mark Henry, Eric Henry,
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone.
Speaker 3 (49:40):
We're back in a minute.
Speaker 4 (49:43):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone. Morning Kickoff, Mike Hardball,
Horge World Strongest Man, Mark Henry, Eric Henry sitting in
for hard Ball harje on this long horn Monday.
Speaker 3 (50:00):
And Mark, it's a great thing.
Speaker 4 (50:01):
We got you back in the building because we missed
on this last We shot to Corey Mosa k View
who filled in, but we got to run it back.
The world's strongest take comes from the world's strongest man himself,
Mark Henry, Mark, talk to the people.
Speaker 1 (50:19):
Hear it.
Speaker 2 (50:21):
Guess what, Yes, sir, It's time for the world's strongest
take by.
Speaker 3 (50:27):
The world's strongest man.
Speaker 5 (50:30):
Man.
Speaker 2 (50:30):
Guess back then they didn't know me. Now I'm hot,
say all on the guys. Oh man, I said I
wasn't gonna do it. I lied, Guys, I am gonna
talk about the Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (50:48):
I'm have to do it.
Speaker 2 (50:50):
Cowboys signed Jake Ferguson to a four year, fifty two
million dollar extension, and people were up in arms.
Speaker 3 (51:00):
Why would you.
Speaker 2 (51:04):
Dedicate so much money to a guy that was already
under contract for the foreseeable future and then you extend
him four years, which gives him now five years with
the Cowboys at that money, and you haven't paid the
(51:26):
guy that's the best player on your team. He is
the guy that you can build an entire team around.
Why wouldn't you spend that money? And I have the
answer for you guys, And I tried my best not
to get into it, but I just can't help myself.
(51:48):
I still compelled to do it. And that is the
crip keeper. Jerry Jones loves drama.
Speaker 3 (52:03):
That's him.
Speaker 2 (52:04):
That's him laughing after he signed that contract. Jerry Jones,
he knows that he's gonna pay Michael Parsons. But if
you notice this whole offseason, all we did is talk
about the Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (52:21):
Jerry Jones sees more value in.
Speaker 2 (52:25):
Being at the top of the stat line or the
news wire because it gives attention nationally to what the
Cowboys are doing.
Speaker 3 (52:38):
And he's going to continue to do so.
Speaker 2 (52:40):
When in the last five dominant players at the Cowboys
did they not get paid? You go back to Ezekiel Elliott,
you go back to Dak Prescott, you go back to
Trayvon Diggs, which I wish that he would not have
done that, But I digress. The guys that have come
up have gotten paid. Seedee Lamb got his money last
(53:03):
year and Michael Parsons is going to get his money
in the next week.
Speaker 3 (53:10):
The only guy I can think of that didn't get
paid was Murray back in the days.
Speaker 2 (53:14):
Yeah, well, Murray had more miles on him than a
Greyhound bus and I wouldn't have gave him the money either.
And regardless of how good he was, there was also
other guys that were behind Murray that were, you know,
just as good. And when I say just as good,
people forget how good Barbara was. Barbara had had moments
(53:39):
with the Cowboys where I mean, like, if you can
create a Dallas Cowboy moment where you rush for fifteen
hundred yards or something like that and you know ten
touchdowns like.
Speaker 3 (53:50):
You, that's a great season. That's a Pro Bowl season.
And Barbara was a Pro.
Speaker 2 (53:54):
Bowl running back, so I could see myself not paying him.
But to this point, uh, the reason that the Cowboys
did what they did yesterday was the tight end market
is going up, and for the first time in Cowboy history,
(54:15):
they got ahead of something.
Speaker 3 (54:17):
And I'm good with that.
Speaker 2 (54:18):
But they do need to go ahead and pay Michael Parsons,
and that's going to happen in the next week all
week and a half.
Speaker 4 (54:27):
Eric Marcus, what say, y'all, Mark, you see me look
at my phone. I want to make sure I read
this quote to you directly because you're a Cowboy fan,
and you know.
Speaker 3 (54:37):
Me not if it's gonna hurt my feelings, don't read it.
Speaker 4 (54:40):
Well, you know what, it might not hurt your feelings,
but I got to bring it a real okay, okay,
And I read this on your market.
Speaker 2 (54:46):
And this, by the way, this contract makes him the
eighth highest pay tight end, not the top three.
Speaker 3 (54:54):
This is what I'll say about Jerry Jones. I firmly
believe this. All right.
Speaker 4 (54:57):
I want to read the quote from Kevin clark Es.
He said, when I look at Jerry Jones, I think
one thing. If the football gods came down and said, Jerry,
you get to win the next three Super Bowls. But
because there's a butt, the catch us, you can't do
a press conference over those three years. He looks at
the football gods and says, no deal. He would say
(55:19):
no deal.
Speaker 3 (55:20):
And I was for this.
Speaker 2 (55:24):
Last month. I said, wow, guys, this is great. Coach
Shoddy as he calls him, has come in and it's
been quiet. That was the best thing that ever happened
to me as a Cowboy fan. They were quiet. And
then then training camp. But right before training camp we
(55:46):
had one issue, and that was Turbin, you know, being arrested.
That was the only thing that happened that was kind
of out of line this whole off season, you know,
off season cycle. And now one weekend, Jerry Jones is
talking again and it's like the movie Friday and he's like, man,
(56:09):
why you're gonna say something Debo? He said, Man, I
got mind control over Debot. When he leaves, I could
talk again. That's Jerry Jones is the mind control is off.
He's talking again. Nobody's got mind control over that.
Speaker 3 (56:25):
Debo. Doubt about that.
Speaker 4 (56:28):
This is kind of my thing here, right And like
I said, I couldn't imagine being a Cowboy fan because
it would eat me up inside.
Speaker 3 (56:36):
Mark, Yeah it does.
Speaker 2 (56:37):
And man, you don't even know, like I know you
listen to the show, of course, but like there have
been times where I quit the Cowboys about when the
season was over last year and I was not I
was looking for a new team. I was like, man,
I gotta find somebody that I could cheer for that
don't make me emotional and hard and Marcus laughed at me.
(57:01):
They was like, hey, man, you you're seriously you're emotional
about the thing. I said yes, I said I I
think I fell in love again. And this is one
of those things that I know that we're gonna get.
We're gonna get this deal signed. Say week, it's a week. Uh,
(57:22):
Michael Parks is gonna get signed. There's no way around it.
Speaker 6 (57:25):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (57:26):
If you had a chance to sign him, that time
is over. I mean to trade him. That time is over.
So you have to sign him, and he's the guy
that you structure your defense. What people don't realize is
Cowboys have drafted a guy that they didn't know how
good he was. They knew he was going to be good,
(57:46):
but they didn't realize that he was this good. And
now you have michaeh.
Speaker 7 (57:54):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (57:55):
You allow this guy to get some reps while Micah
is out, and when Michael does come back, it's going
to be like a surprise that they're going to have
two guys on each side.
Speaker 3 (58:04):
That can pass rush at that elite level.
Speaker 4 (58:07):
Mark real Quick, does any part of this concern you,
because I know you've seen the videos come out of
training camp, come out of I think where they're up
in Oxnard, up in California, where the guys micaeh Parsons
Trevon Diggs. They're taking matters to their own hands, to
having their own press conference. And I know you've seen
the videos of the fans chanting in the background, pay Micah.
(58:27):
Does any of that concern you that at all?
Speaker 3 (58:30):
No, not at all.
Speaker 2 (58:32):
Jerry knows what he's gotta do. Okay, this is all
timeline stuff. He's he's he's being very greedy with what
he's doing. Now, it's different in Cincinnati. Cincinnati is cheap.
They just didn't want to pay anybody, right, And it
was the same way and in other places where guys
(58:53):
had big money deals coming up, Hard said it best
get ahead of it, like, go ahead and sign them
like the year before, because next year the money is
just gonna go up. And that's what happened with Michael.
Michael wanted to sign a deal that would have been
(59:13):
eleven million dollars less last year. Right now the market
went up and he has to take the money otherwise
it's gonna ruin it for everybody else in the league.
And people are gonna be like, man, why would you
do that? You killed us, You shot us in the foot.
So that being said, cowboys, go ahead and pony up.
(59:38):
They're gonna have to pay the big money and they're
gonna have to try to get rid of that contract
that they signed with Trayvon Diggs next. So I pray
he for his success and for him to get healthy
so he could come show out and then we can
get something for him.
Speaker 3 (59:54):
Jerry Jones, It's it's simple, you heard Mark, and pay
the man. Pay the man. Pay. This is gonna happen
in the next two weeks. You need it.
Speaker 4 (01:00:02):
You need him in training camp right now. From Mark
Slips to Jerry's ears. You heard it there, Pay the man.
It is the Morning Kickoff Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
Zone Hardball harj Mark Henry Eric Henry of twenty four
to seven Sports sitting in for Harje.
Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
We'll be back in a minute.
Speaker 4 (01:00:19):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Morning Kickoff, World
Strongest Man, Mark Henry, Eric Henry sitting in for hard
Ball Arge. Yes, sir, and we have a special guest
keeping it in the twenty four to seven Sports family.
He is Jordan D. Hill of Dogs two four seven.
Want to have Jordan on and Jordan, good morning. I
(01:00:40):
appreciate you making time here and I know I think
I may have screwed up the times. I told you
eight thirty four eastern, which I noticed nine thirty four
eastern here as we're in the Central time zone. But
Jordan appreciate you making the time. One of the reason
I want to have you on is because the Texas
Longhorns lost to the Georgia Bulldogs twice last year and
it feels inevitable. Over been talking Texas all way? Do
(01:01:01):
you keep bringing up stuff? I'm bringing up old stuff, Mark,
because it feels inevitable Jordan that the long Horns will
have to go through Georgia at some point this season,
past their regular season meeting. Jordan, just start off there,
start us there, let's get.
Speaker 3 (01:01:17):
Your thoughts on.
Speaker 4 (01:01:18):
Do you see it the same way I do that
inevitably Texas and Georgia will have to meet to get
whether it's from Atlanta to the SEC title game or
maybe even a colletball playoff game.
Speaker 3 (01:01:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:01:28):
I mean to me, looking at the SEC this year,
just my read of it, I think there's three teams.
I think it's Texas, I think it's Georgia, and I
think it's Alabama. And you know, I was honestly a
little surprised that Georgia was picked at media days to
play Texas in the SEC title game. I thought there'd
be a lot of questions about Gunner Stockton and that
people would be a little bit more hesitant to maybe
(01:01:50):
say Georgia's got what it take to be back in
that title game. But no, I think it makes for
a fascinating, fascinating setup when you look to that game
in November, the fact that Georgia won both meetings last year,
but you've got all the different storylines from what both
teams lost this offseason. Obviously, Arch Manning, I don't know
how much you've talked about this. I think Georgia was
(01:02:11):
probably the team that finished runner up to Texas in
that recruitment, so you got him coming back to Athens,
you know the matchups there. I think it is fair
to look at both of these teams as the leading
contenders for the SEC and you know, you look at
especially that SEC title game, just how competitive it was,
(01:02:31):
and you know how small the margin forever for both
teams were in that game. I think you look at
understanding that both teams lost quite a bit from those
teams last year, that these two teams, I think, no
matter who wins a regular season game, and if they
meet again in the SEC title game, I think both
have an excellent chance to make the playoffs this year,
(01:02:53):
and like you mentioned, maybe we get another meeting. I
think that these two teams are primed to make a
lot of.
Speaker 3 (01:02:59):
Noise this year. Jordan, what's up? Man? Is Mark Henry?
Speaker 2 (01:03:02):
I got to ask you this question, and I know
it's going to be a sensitive topic to Georgia fan base.
What's the temperature like with Texas getting two guys that
were really, really highly recruited players from the state of
Georgia and now they're coming to the University of Texas.
Speaker 8 (01:03:23):
I mean, I think it's a situation. I don't know
if it's one that we might have predicted in the
last few years, but there's been some really entertaining Georgia
Texas recruiting battles. I mean, if you look at Georgia's
biggest foes on the road right now in recruiting, I
think you'd be hard pressed to say there's another team
that is ahead of Texas. I mean, there have been
(01:03:45):
some absolute knockdown dragouts. SEC Media Days was a really
entertaining one just from the standpoint of Tyler Atkinson picks Texas.
That's a homegrown kid from probably forty five minutes about
an hour away from Athens that picks Texas. And then
you know, James Johnson flips his commitment from Georgia. He'd
(01:04:05):
only been committed to Georgia for a couple of weeks,
flipped it to Texas. But you know, I think that
Georgia obviously one of those guys.
Speaker 3 (01:04:13):
But there's been some.
Speaker 8 (01:04:15):
Pretty impressive recruiting wins over Texas the last few years.
The big one to me is Justin Williams, a guy
from Oakridge that Conrod Texas that I think has a
chance to really break out in twenty twenty five. A
guy that's at an inside linebacker position. I don't know
if there's a deeper inside linebacker room in the country
(01:04:36):
than one Georgia has. So yeah, Georgia fans, I would
definitely say Texas is not their favorite. I'm sure that
when the long Horns come to Athens, when they take
the field, they'll don't realize that. It won't take them
long to recognize that. But no, I mean, I think
that's sort of the name of the game right now
in recruiting you've got these top teams, and some teams
(01:04:56):
are gonna win out for certain guys and then others
look at the edge in other battles. But yeah, there's
no doubt that Texas and Georgia they've been going at
it uh throughout this recruiting cycle, and I don't expect
that to change over the coming weeks in coming months either.
Speaker 2 (01:05:12):
Texas has a long laundry list of rivals, the Oklahoma Sooners,
the Texas A and m Aggie is the Arkansas razor Backs.
And now it looks like with Texas coming to the SEC,
(01:05:33):
Georgia is going to be that set that that that
SEC rival.
Speaker 8 (01:05:40):
Yeah. I mean, what I think really helps when you
consider you know, Texas fitting in uh to the SEC,
is that those games have been entertaining. I know Texas
fans didn't really like the way the first two meetings
of Georgia went, but I mean the key to getting
a good rivalry going is just playing really entertaining games.
Think about early when Missouri got into the SEC, you know,
(01:06:04):
being in the SEC East at the time, Uh, Missouri
and Georgia played a couple of really outstanding games early
in Missouri's run and it helped too that Missouri, uh,
you know, was very competitive when they came into the SEC,
just as Texas has been in their first season. So
I enjoy it just from the standpoint of you got
two teams that again, you know, would either you know,
(01:06:28):
would any of the three of us be surprised if
either of these two teams win the national title this year?
Speaker 3 (01:06:32):
I don't think so.
Speaker 8 (01:06:34):
But to have them matching up in the regular season, uh,
and for it to be set up where, you know,
whoever loses that game, if they take care of business
else where, they'll they'll still have a path to the
playoff at least and probably still have a really good
shot at going to Atlanta. To me, that's all the
right ingredients to build a nice little rivalry. And you know, Georgia,
it's it's interesting when you talk to Georgia fans, it's
(01:06:57):
kind of where they are in the state. You know
who they'll tell you the their biggest rivaler is. You know,
Florida is probably the most popular answer. But you know,
you've got South Carolina and Alburn, Tennessee for North Georgia fans.
But you know, I think when you you know, in
really the last five or six years for me, In
probably the last ten years, Alabama has been a big one.
And it's a lot like this Texas conversation we're having
(01:07:20):
Georgia and Alabama. I have played in some all time
classic games, and a lot of the times when those
two teams played, there's been a lot on the line.
Speaker 4 (01:07:28):
Shjordan, really quick, got two minutes left. I want to
sneak this question an here for you. Where did you
think in cheap plug here? We do a twenty four
to seven sports media polls, so cheap plug for that,
but really quick, you grew up against break here? Where
did you think Texas would fall in line in the
SEC this year? If you could let the folks know.
Speaker 8 (01:07:45):
That just out of curiosity, Yeah, you know, I actually
have Texas fourth, and it's really more of a product
of I try to not go with the conventional picks.
I think that you know, saying it's going to be Georgia,
Texas and the NCC title game for the second straight year. Yeah,
how many times have we seen back to back matchups
(01:08:07):
in this conference title game? So I've kind of been
a little bearish on Texas. I think just the questions
more so on the offensive line and what they lost there.
I've got questions on what that'll look like. So I
had Georgia winning the SEC. I have out them beating
Alabama in the SEC title game. I have LSU as
sort of my surprise. I think, you know, LSU brings
(01:08:28):
back their leading pastors, they're leading rusher, they're leading receiver,
you know, leading tackler from last year, one of only
two SEC teams to do that. I've got LSU sneaking in.
And you know, I still have Texas making the playoff.
I think I have them at like nine to three,
ten and two. I think Texas fans would probably be
disappointed to have that, but you make it through the
galllets that they play, and if they're healthy going in
(01:08:51):
the playoff, they can still make some noise there.
Speaker 3 (01:08:54):
He is Jordan D.
Speaker 4 (01:08:55):
Hill of Dogs two for seven. Jordan, appreciate you making
the time. Talk soon when that matchup rolls around. Jordan
appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (01:09:03):
Think you buddy, all right?
Speaker 8 (01:09:04):
Thanks guys.
Speaker 4 (01:09:05):
More than Kickoff Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone,
Mark Henry Real strongest Man, Eric Henry Pinch hitting from
Mike Cardball Hards.
Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
We will be back in a moment. I see What
You did?
Speaker 2 (01:09:20):
Am thirteen hundred The Zone Morning kickoff World's Strongest Man,
Mark Henry Eric Henry Pinch hitting for Mike Hardball.
Speaker 3 (01:09:30):
This song just you can't. You can't help me be happier.
Speaker 2 (01:09:33):
It is like, no, don't be happy. It's one of
those kind of feels. I don't care if it's Monday, midweek.
If you hear this, you can't get a little sid
You gotta.
Speaker 3 (01:09:44):
If you have a brown, you have bigger problems than
I can help you with. This song makes you happy?
Speaker 4 (01:09:52):
Well, I tell you who doesn't have any problems right now?
On this Longhold Monday, that would be the Texas long
Horns if they were As they return to camp, they
will hit the practice field Frank Denius and I'm excited,
no doubt about it.
Speaker 2 (01:10:04):
Me too.
Speaker 3 (01:10:05):
I'm ready. I'm ready Mark to get back. What time
do you go out today? Today? They're not out today.
Speaker 4 (01:10:11):
We will our first availability tomorrow we were coordinators, and
Wednesday we will be out there at two forty five
getting that Texas heated. Get the body ready for that,
right man, I don't envy you.
Speaker 3 (01:10:24):
It's hot.
Speaker 4 (01:10:25):
I'm gonna tell a story real quick before we close up.
The show with what defines a good season for Texas football,
And that's a perfect way to close the show because
we had Jordan hill On. He was talking about his
projection for the Horns, and we were talking a little
bit during the break about that. But we tell a
quick story, Mark. So last year the first fall practice,
Steve Sarkisian had just out there for about fifty to
fifty five minutes, which listen, I'm never complaining. I'll always
(01:10:47):
take more time watching practice, right, you know, I do it.
But Mark, I made the mistake of Marcus. I made
the stake of wearing jays, right. I wore my white Jays.
And I cannot prove this scientifically as fast, but this
is what I think happened. The practice fields at Frank Denias,
I believe are like the not astral turf, but the
(01:11:09):
field turf rightber pellets and it was hot as all.
You know what, I firmly believe. I can't prove it,
but I believe some of those pellets melted onto my
j's and to where they're just there. I thought it
was I thought it was dirt, and I'll try to
get it off, and I'm like, wait, this feels like
rubber on there.
Speaker 3 (01:11:27):
I can't prove that, but that's my theory.
Speaker 6 (01:11:29):
Mark.
Speaker 7 (01:11:30):
So now cosarka bill and now you have the limited
addition Texas Texas practice field practice.
Speaker 3 (01:11:43):
Mark.
Speaker 4 (01:11:43):
Let me ask you this man, what defines a good
season for Texas? Because I'll be quick, this is my belief.
I think Texas will play for a national title this year.
And I do believe that the bar the floor for
Texas is they need to at least reach a national
semifinal like they have the last two years. But for you,
what de find a good season? I think a good
season is different than what Texas is going to have.
(01:12:06):
I think Texas is gonna have a great season.
Speaker 2 (01:12:09):
A good season is winning ten games, getting to the
conference championship and avenging the loss for Georgia twice. That's
a good season, and then going to the playoffs, but
maybe not as a top four. That's a good season.
A great season in which I really feel like Texas
(01:12:32):
going to have is them winning at least eleven games
and going to the championship and winning and winning the
national championship. And that's a great season because I think
with that Arch probably wins the Heisman and you have
a chance at having a Heisman quarterback come back, and
(01:12:55):
everybody keeps saying, Mark, if he wins the National Championship,
he wins the Heisman in the same year, he's gonna
have to go to the NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:13:05):
I don't think he will. Mark.
Speaker 4 (01:13:09):
You know, it's funny you say that, because look at
it this way. Okay, from a financial perspective, there's no
real reason for Arch Manning to rush out there.
Speaker 3 (01:13:18):
That's step one. There's no reason to rush.
Speaker 4 (01:13:20):
Step two if we take a look at the Manning
family history. Okay, they clearly wanted Eli Manning to go
to New York. I think the only scenario which Arch
Manning leaves this year is if he's clear cut the
number one pick and it's a home that the Manning
family deems. Okay, this is a good setup for Arch Manning.
(01:13:42):
And you know they're gonna talk.
Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
To the general managers and the owner of the team
and say are you gonna draft him or not? Then
they're gonna say, well, if he comes out, we're gonna
draft the number one overall.
Speaker 3 (01:13:54):
And then he'll say, okay, Arch you can go. No
disrespectful to.
Speaker 7 (01:13:58):
Be a third.
Speaker 2 (01:14:01):
Line that I ever heard Peyton say to Arch. He's like, hey, man,
I just want you to, you know, represent the family.
Be respectful and don't be a turd.
Speaker 3 (01:14:12):
Mark.
Speaker 4 (01:14:13):
My thing is this man, And this is why with
Texas fans ask me, you know it is Arch coming back?
Speaker 3 (01:14:18):
You see it one year?
Speaker 4 (01:14:19):
Mark, would you rather go be in Cleveland, in Chicago
and Jacksonville franchises that have histories of not developing quarterbacks?
Or I can come back to Austin for another year
work with a guy in Steve Sarkishan who has a
history of developing quarterbacks. That seems pretty simple to me,
does it not, Mark?
Speaker 3 (01:14:37):
It sounds great?
Speaker 2 (01:14:38):
And what about like Aaron Rodgers said that he's not
gonna he's not gonna come back. What if Pitchburg in
a perfect world, everything happens and then Arch Pitchburg. I
mean they're they're they get the first pick or they
move up to get the first pick, right if and
they say, look, we're putting.
Speaker 3 (01:14:58):
All our eggs in one basket.
Speaker 2 (01:15:00):
We're given away two first round draft picks, and we're
given away this, that and the other, and the kitchen sink.
We want the first pick, so because we want Arch.
Those are the type of circumstances, Mark, you got it.
You gotta do that like that, that's the one you
got to because you pay them, right.
Speaker 4 (01:15:18):
Sure, yeah, if you can get into a stable, like
a stable franchise like a Pittsburgh like heck, I would
even use how about this in l a Rams for example, Right,
you get with Sean McVay out there, Right, you get
a big market, a franchise that since they've left Saint Louis,
they've been operated fairly well. They've got stable situation with
the head coach.
Speaker 3 (01:15:38):
That'd be great.
Speaker 2 (01:15:39):
I think even the Jets, I mean as much as
you you you went ahead and got a quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:15:46):
But the Giants they didn't do much right well realistically.
Speaker 2 (01:15:50):
And you know Peyton wants Peyton and Eli both would
love for Ars to be in the market like New York.
Speaker 3 (01:15:57):
If you were in New York.
Speaker 2 (01:15:59):
Now that's when you make a concession too, if you
have the opportunity to play. Just you talk about money,
the money that Peyton and Eli made would be pale
in comparison to what Arch can make realistically.
Speaker 5 (01:16:15):
If the Rams are are the Stillers are that bad
that they have the number one pick, I don't think
that coaching staff will be still there.
Speaker 2 (01:16:24):
Well, I think no, that's fine because the whole point
of this is we know for a fact right now,
being that you know, we were going to talk about
it tomorrow when we talk more NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:16:35):
That's called a preview. That's a preview for tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:16:39):
We were very long horned centric today because it's long
harm Monday. But tomorrow, guys will be back to business
as usual. We will get more into what happened on
the baseball, the Major League Baseball front. We'll get back
into the NFL and we'll have a good time doing it.
Speaker 4 (01:16:58):
You heard from the man himself, world strongest man, Mark Henry.
Eric Henry filling in for Hardball, Hard Sports Am thirteen
The Zone.
Speaker 3 (01:17:08):
Happy Monday, y'all will be back to do it again tomorrow,
and remember everything you see.
Speaker 6 (01:17:16):
How's it going? Got this?
Speaker 2 (01:17:20):
And I still mess that we don't believe, don't believe
everything you see because even sug there we go, there
you go,
