right into it. Yesterday it was a beautiful day. We
had all kinds of sports happenings across the landscape, and
the main story was the two favorite words in sports.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Game seven.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
The Seattle Mariners and the Ronald Blue Jays were playing
a Game seven with a chance to go to the
World Series to take on the LA Dodgers, which will
take place this Friday. Major League Baseball World Series starts
Friday in LA. But guess what, folks, he couldn't do
it without some special things. Seattle jumped out early from
(02:40):
a Julio Rodrigez home run.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
And two pitch had a high drive the left center field.
Lucas on the run. That ball's gone. Coulio Rodrigez, in
the biggest game of his life, is delivering doubles and
scores in the first, homer's in the third, and it's
two to one Seattle, two.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
To one Seattle, and the game continues to roll on.
But there's that man, the big dumper, who was struggling
a little bit but decided, hey, I cannot leave without
dropping the bomb.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
Cal It's a high fly ball, deep bright field. It
is John Rolly joins Rodriguez telever end in Game seven,
the two biggest stars for the Maritors, showing up what.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
It matters most. This guy's amazing. I just.
Speaker 5 (03:39):
Seattle knows it. The rest of the country is about
to find out.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
And everybody was thinking, well, that should just about do it.
But if you look in at that Blue Jays dugout
and you look at a guy like Vladimir Guerrero who
continues to tear the cover off the ball, and the
guy with the most experienced came up in a clutch
situation with the base open.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
They decided to pitch to him.
Speaker 5 (04:03):
We send this Blue Jays crowd into a frenzy well
pitch high fly back.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Rough field a rosarita. What is it going?
Speaker 4 (04:22):
George Springer has his herds half a chief footballment just
so deeper with the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
This one cuts him on the word series. It's not
the Warck series. But if Joe Carter had that jacket,
he'd be rolling in the jacket.
Speaker 6 (04:38):
Nah.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
That jacket has had.
Speaker 5 (04:40):
The biggest moment of the year to this point, Springer.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Springer hits a dinger, Dinger, bang bang. He hit that thing.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
And let me just tell you this, when he came
up in that situation, you gotta understand that is not
the that you want to pitch to. If you look
at the history, he has now moved into I believe,
fourth place for the most home runs in the postseason
with twenty four. He has been on point every single
(05:15):
time and experience is something that you can not mistake,
and that's what George Springer was able to do in
that situation. As astro fans, they get excited, they love it,
But as a as a baseball fan, you have to
appreciate guys showing up in those big moments and not
(05:37):
letting it be too big.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Get them the real reason why, tell them the real
reason that hit came about? Because five minutes before that hit,
I called.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
You and I said, hard he believed it? And you
said no, Man, I'm cheering.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
I'm cheering, man, I'm cheering for Toronto man, I said, said, Man,
all you gotta do is turn your hat inside out.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
I was like, you know, let's do the rally cap thing.
And we did that. Yeah, Mark, and.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
It was us trying to put it on us. Mark
called me, he was like, man, why are they pitching
to Vladimir? I was like, well, pitch at him.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
I was like, they got to because this dude is
the guy. I said.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
I had to turn the channel because they weren't winning.
And then all of a sudden, I looked at my
phone and I was like, Springer's up in the seventh inning,
runners on second and third. If they pitched to this guy,
that coach needs to be fired. Yeah, because Springer is
that guy. Springer is that guy. He is that dude
that every time he comes up and you looked at
(06:43):
it the entire time. And Vladimir Guerrero Junior hit the
same amount of home runs in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
They almost like the same place.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
They had the same averages, they were everything's the same.
But Vladimir was being the most consistent. He got an opportunity.
He was named mL MVP of the ALCS. He went
ten of twenty six three eighty five bat and average,
three homers, six home runs in the playoffs, twenty two
total bases and right now he's got that ops of
(07:12):
thirteen thirty.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
Dude has been on fire and he was named MVP.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
See that is not the most upset team right now.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
The most upset team is He's Wow because the Springer.
Because it's Springer.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
They should have kept there's certain guys you just don't
let out your building. Well they well you got to
think about it. They let every single one of them
out of there. They're only one that they kept was
out too to Yeah, Springer was gone. Burt Breckman left
coreb left, but they brought him back.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
So they tried to go young and it didn't work.
Sometimes good is better than going young.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Financially, it was not gonna be good for that hole
in organization. It might have been impossible to keep all
of that, yeah, because one of those guys, I mean,
they earned money, So I'm not turning down money to
stay in one place when I can go somewhere else
and they're gonna pay me the right amount. So the
organization would have been destroyed if they would have tried
(08:14):
to keep everybody because the minor league system was too
thick they were building, it would have been bad to
try to keep them. But in hindsight, you look at
what Springer's been able to do. He's been very consistent.
The one thing that Springer has been battling though, has
been injuries. Springer has been hurt and so for what
(08:34):
he was able to do in these playoffs in that
particular moment, the clutch moment, being able to go to Toronto.
This is the first time since nineteen ninety three that
the Blue Jays were in the World Series. Ninety four,
the Montreal Expos team that I would have been a
part of had an opportunity, but the strike happened. They
(08:56):
have a documentary that's coming out tonight called or came
out today called Who Killed the Montreal expos I can't
wait to watch that today after the show.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Will you be on that? I will not be on
the documentary.
Speaker 6 (09:08):
I was.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
I wasn't part of that team.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
I was gonna be there in September when the run
was happening, but the strike ended up happening.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
Well, you were talking about the Springer being injured, and
he didn't look injured the way he ran around those bases.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
No, not anymore. I mean, this is a guy. You
see how fast he was running.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
He said, it's probably the fastest he's ran the bases
in a long time because he was that excited and
ready to get back. But you see this, and now
you have a date with a juggernaut in the LA Dodgers.
As I said, world Series will start this Friday. I
know Craig Way is excited. We were on a group
text last night and just really excited about this matchup
(09:51):
because not only are you he's happy because he's an
LA Dodger fan. You're happy because this is the type
of game that makes you love the game of baseball.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
The way that this breaks down, and let's not forget
the last time Springer played the Dodgers.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Yeah, he wouldn't desert. He won't desert. He was the MVP, absolutely,
and he was crushing the baseball in LA. So this
is a big time matchup. There's a lot of history.
As I said, you look at the juggernauts that are
the LA Dodgers and what they've been able to achieve.
And now you got to show Hey finding his swing pitching. Well,
(10:29):
you got those pitching matchups. But you also have this
team in the Toronto Blue Jays, and I said it before,
they've advanced to the World Series without Boba Shet. They're
starting shortstop in their top hitter. He's back for the
World Series. He's gonna be eligible to play healthy wise,
So this is going to be one of those This
(10:50):
is I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful of it. But the way
that the Dodgers are playing, they're just they just seem
way too good right now.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
And when the Dodgers play a team that's quote unquote
beneath them, does not they stump them? Yeah, you know
a lot of times teams come in against you know,
far less talented teams, and they don't they don't live
up to their their standards.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Not the Dodgers. The Dodgers they putting you through.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Yeah, as Dave Roberts said, they said, we're ruining baseball.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Well, let's ruin it for four more games.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
And on the other side, Vladimiricarero Junior said, this is
all good and everything, but we have four more wins
to get before we can be crowned.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
What a great, great game last night.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
Coming up next, we're gonna hear it from coach sark
as he met with the media. Some tough questions were
asked yesterday, and of course we'll hear from Joe Cook
of Inside Texas coming up at seven thirty four right
here on a turn the page Tuesday edition of The
Morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. The Zone
(11:57):
also wanted to point this out well, back to the
Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone. Coming up in the next segment, we'll help
Joe Cook of Inside Texas joining us at seven thirty four.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
But I wanted to point this out one more thing
on the.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
Toronto Blue Jays after forty years in Major League Baseball
fourteen as a player, twelve as a manager, and seventeen
as a coach. Don Maddingly, Donnie Baseball is finally getting
the chance to be part of the World Series, and
he's going up his going up against his former team
that he managed from twenty eleven to twenty fifteen and
(12:36):
coached in the organization since eight to twenty ten, against
the Dodgers. So I think that's pretty cool. A guy
that's from the LA area is one coach Steve Sark
Jim He met with the media yesterday after the sixteen
to thirteen victory overtime victory over the Mississi Mississippi State.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
That's what we played at the Kentucky Wildcats.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Through that, Colin Simmons was named Defensive Lineman Player of
the Week and Mason Shipley was named Special Teams Player
of the Week for their performances against Kentucky. But here
is coach Sark with his open end statement. It's a
little long, but I definitely want you to hear it.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
You know, Saturday's ball game.
Speaker 7 (13:20):
You know, I echo a lot of the same things
I said in the postgame, and that's not always I
can always say that, but there's some things that are
very true in some things that were eye opening when
you look at the tape, I think, you know, Mason
Shipley again, what a what a performance, guys, eleven of
thirteen on the year, and his two misses are from
fifty five and fifty six, so tremendous performance. Ryan Nibblett
(13:42):
again continue, those were huge returns for us in the game,
and Jack boome Easter tremendous job. I thought defensively, they
found ways to get stops when we needed to have them,
you know, And credit to Kentucky, I thought they had
a decent plan to kind of move the football. But
our guys get a fourth down stop on the first
drive of the game I thought was critical. I thought
(14:04):
our ability to pressure the quarterback when we were disciplined
in our rush lanes showed up with five sacks and hurries.
When we got hurt, we got out of our rush lanes,
which led to the touchdown there, the scrambled touchdown. So
definitely areas for improvement there. But what a goal line
stand at the end of the game. You know, I
think one of the unsung plays in there is the
(14:25):
play that gets them to the first and goal is
Jalen Gilbo getting getting them out of bounds at the
four yard line to give us a chance to have
that goal line stand.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
And then again on second down.
Speaker 7 (14:36):
They run a little play action past bootleg where Jalen
stays disciplined to cover the tight end in the flat,
which forces the quarterback scramble to get him on the
ground and then inevitably the goal line stand.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
Some amazing efforts.
Speaker 7 (14:48):
Brad Spence, Travis Shaw, Jolani MacDonald, Michael taff Leonge Lafowl.
I mean that Cole bivarred a bunch of guys with
great efforts there, I think offensively. You know one thing
that I wasn't as aware of post game, but then
you look at the tate. You know when we talked
about third downs, I was talking about third and longs
(15:08):
after the game, we actually were pretty effective in our
third and lungs. Where we were ineffective was third and
one to six. You know, we were one for seven
on third and one to six Saturday night, and that
that's where we have to We got to be productive.
You know, if we're going to trade or try to
play really complimentary football control in the game, you got
(15:28):
to convert third and ones, third and twos, third and fours,
third and fives, And we were ineffective in that area
of the game Saturday, which in turn didn't allow us
to extend drives, didn't allow us to keep the defense
on the field, didn't allow us to move the football
to score more points. And so that was an area
where I definitely think we need to improve. You know,
(15:49):
we've made such an emphasis on being better on third
and long because we've had so many.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
Well, we converted a few of those.
Speaker 7 (15:54):
We hit DeAndre for a big third down conversion, we
hit Ryan Wingo for a big third down conversion, Art
scrambles on it another third and long. So we've got
to be more effective in the third and short and third.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
And medium range.
Speaker 7 (16:07):
You know, I was very disappointed in myself in our
ability to end the game with the ball in our
hands and kick a field goal to win it. Late,
we were in one mode to get ourselves in the
scoring range, and we got into that mode and I
did not do a good enough job of communicating to
the offense at that point we were in field goal range.
(16:28):
Now it was about staying in bounds ensure that that
game was going to end with a kick from us,
and we just have you know, we have the play
where DeAndre goes out of bounds, which allows them to
preserve a time out because in reality, the worst case scenario,
they should have gotten the ball back with somewhere between
fifteen and eighteen seconds. And so I don't mind the
play call. I thought the play call was good, the
(16:49):
execution was good. And that's where that point comes in
for DeAndre to decide do I get the first down
or do I have to get down? But I did
not do a good enough job of communicating that in
that instance. You know, at the end of the day, offensively,
I've got to do a better job. I've got to
do a better job putting all of our players in
position to be successful. And that's blocking people, that's throwing
(17:11):
the ball to open people. That's that's running routes precisely
where they need to be.
Speaker 6 (17:16):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (17:16):
So that's on nobody but me, and so that that's
uh when when you can look in the mirror first
and say, Okay, I'm responsible to try to get this,
you know, fixed, and get better at it. Very comfortable
with that. So as we look forward to Mississippi State.
Jeff Levy second season has done a really nice job.
You know, this is a much improved football team. Obviously
a high powered offense, you know, up tempo team. Uh
(17:39):
that has you know, knocked off Arizona State already at
home this year, I think, went to overtime with Tennessee
already this year at home and had a chance last
week at Florida to win that game without a without
a turnover there at the end of the game by
Florida to to seal the victory. So, like I said,
high powered offense does a nice job of balancing things.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Get good runners.
Speaker 7 (18:01):
Have two explosive receivers on the on the perimeter and
and Blake Shape and is playing good football for them.
And in defense that is that is you know, goes
and attacks the football. They create turnovers at a high
at a high rate. We've got to continue the trend
that we've been on. We've gone two straight games now
of protecting the football and that's part of playing complimentary
football that we're not putting our defense on any short fields.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
And so we've got to do a great job of
that this week.
Speaker 7 (18:24):
But should be a great environment, be our four straight
game away from DKR, and we've got it We've got
to take pride in the way we.
Speaker 8 (18:32):
Perform on the road, and this is going to be
another challenge for us to go do that. You mentioned
fourth straight game away from dk R. They'll be home
the following week against a very very hot Vanderbilt football team.
But the most important part is getting ready for this
week as they head to Mississippi State. But coach Stark
took ownership and a lot of the things that needed
(18:54):
to be asked and needed to be said, and he
realizes there's some areas that he needs needs to be
a little bit better, and as.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Well, that's great, you know, but I also believe that
you should know where you're down in the distance. You
should know that I need I need to get the
first down challenge and stay in bounds. And it happened
last week, this past Sunday or last Sunday when the
Bengals they had a lead, but if they gave the
(19:23):
ball up, they were gonna have to take a chance
at another high powered offense scoring. And what did Higgins do.
He could have tried to score, but he didn't. He
ran his slid inbounds. They downed the ball and then
they ran the clock more yep.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
So like those are things you have to think about
in the moment, and that's every player.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
The coach shouldn't just be the only one reminding you
your teammate, hey man, make sure you get down, get
the first down, to get down in bounds.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
Like they have to communicate better.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
Yes, they have to be engaged knowing situation situational football,
just like in every other sport as well. One of
the things that coach Sark was asked about is as
the head coach, how do you judge yourself and critique
yourself as an offensive coordinator as a team that has
been struggling on offense?
Speaker 7 (20:17):
Like I do after every game, I look in the
mirror first, you know, and I think a lot of times,
you know, human nature would say, hey, we have a
great offensive game that I don't critique myself. There's never
a game that I don't come out of or I think,
you know what, I probably would have called something different
here or something different there, and this game was no different.
Speaker 8 (20:36):
You know.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
One of the plays that I'm.
Speaker 7 (20:37):
Probably more upset about myself with is the first play
of overtime. You know, we get a holding penalty on
on Brandon Baker, but I didn't need to risk that
holding penalty predicated off of them, you know, score not
scoring it on their session. And I didn't call a
direct run, which is really what I should have done
in that instance.
Speaker 3 (20:59):
I went a little more game plan mode.
Speaker 7 (21:01):
I felt like we had an opportunity to create an
explosive play, but that puts stress on Brandon and that
style of run that we called has a has a
has an opportunity to be a negative type run.
Speaker 3 (21:12):
So that was not a very good call in the
game at all.
Speaker 7 (21:15):
And it's easy to point to a brand and get
in the hold, but in reality, that wasn't a good
call by me. So I can look at a lot
of different things within a game, good, bad, and different
of the result. But I'm always looking in the mirror
first to say, Okay, what could I have done differently?
What could I have done better, not only for the
offense but for the team. And so I'm I'm very
comfortable doing that. I've been doing this a long time
(21:35):
and so it's not it's not something that's.
Speaker 9 (21:37):
New for me.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
It's interesting when he said that because of that, So
he said, I've been doing that for a long time,
so it's nothing new.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
To me, and we'll go back to another conversation right before.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
We go to our number two, because there was a
question that was asked of him yesterday that a lot
of folks were wondering if he would make a change.
Coming up next, we got Joe Cook of Inside Texas
as he joins us on a Tuesday, turn the page
Tuesday edition of the Morning Kickoff right here on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It's a Tuesday, turn
(22:17):
the page Tuesday edition of the Morning Kickoff right here
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
That zone your home for Texas football.
Speaker 1 (22:25):
But it also means our guy, Joe Cook of Inside
Texas joins us every Tuesday at seven thirty four. And Joe,
Texas left a lot to be desired after a victory,
nonetheless sixteen to thirteen overtime victory in Lexington, Kentucky. But
(22:46):
what was it that you guys over at Inside Texas
focused on during that ballgame as Texas walked away barely
with that victory.
Speaker 6 (22:56):
Yeah, the offense is listless. That's that's the big thing.
Speaker 10 (23:02):
And you know, I think you can point toward starting
a left guard, a true freshman left guard and starting
your backup center and being on the road and all
that's true, but it seemed pretty grab baggie. A lot
of the stuff that I think Texas felt like it
figured out against Oklahoma, we didn't really even see a whole.
Speaker 8 (23:21):
Lot of it.
Speaker 10 (23:22):
So and I think that the problems then from the
offensive line. It's like, Okay, what's gonna work this week?
What can get into rhythm?
Speaker 6 (23:30):
And it can get it can get into the rhythm.
Speaker 10 (23:32):
I think that's the that's the thing that we can
see after the Oklahoma game and even some other games.
But getting into that rhythm is really difficult, especially with
all the extenuating circumstances.
Speaker 6 (23:42):
And then also when Arch just remains volatile.
Speaker 10 (23:45):
You know, you can get good play from him, but
he's he's just missing throws that he shouldn't be missing,
and you know that's there.
Speaker 6 (23:53):
It's just a very.
Speaker 10 (23:54):
Volatile offense up and down. That's why they only held
the ball for twenty minutes. I've been jokes that they
survived in the Iowa in you know, when the other
team just held the ball the whole time. But hey,
that defense comes through makes an important goal on stand
and Mason Shipley, a guy who you had to work
hard and literally invest in over the course of the
(24:16):
offseason to get him on your roster and keep him
away from others.
Speaker 6 (24:19):
Comes through with what was it ten clutch points that
helped decide of the game.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
Joe Syding back to had a full practice. What does
what does it look like for him? Are they considering
having him be a full participant this whole week and
playing in the game or is this just more power
for the course.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
Yeah, that's really.
Speaker 6 (24:43):
Tough to figure out.
Speaker 10 (24:45):
I think he'll probably end up being on that injury
report again, probably maybe he'll be upgraded to questionable. But
you know, it's it's it's just really unfortunate for him
to go from you know, the the double ligament issue
and a lot of different things during his freshman year
to finally seeming right and then you know, the hamstring
(25:05):
doesn't doesn't come through for him against UTAP And you
know we've seen, if you all remember back to baseball season,
they were very cautious with Jonah Williams as far as
his hamstring, and you know, that's just playing outfield, and
when you're a running back.
Speaker 6 (25:20):
You got to run every single play.
Speaker 10 (25:22):
So I think they've been cautious with it that they've
had to be cautious with it because they don't want
him to, you know, be anything less than what he's
capable of.
Speaker 6 (25:31):
But they they need him on the field, and he
needs to get on the field, you know, just for
his own sake.
Speaker 10 (25:36):
And then of course you'd like to see it for
for Texas to see maybe if his you know, physical
nature can give you a little bit extra in the
running game, a guy who can fall forward for two
more yards. But you know, it's it's kind of the
Quintravian Weisner show. And that's only if.
Speaker 6 (25:52):
They decided to run the ball too.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
Got to be able to have the ability. We're talking
to Joe Cook of Inside Texas. You can follow them
at Joseph Cook eighty nine on his ex Twitter handle Joe.
Speaker 3 (26:09):
Now we're focused on Mississippi State.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
Another road trip to Stark Vegas h Starkville, Mississippi. Some
former Texas Longhorns are on the field. Brendan Thompson who
ended up going to Oklahoma before finding his way to
Mississippi State, Darren Gallett the linebacker, and dre Bledsoe are
all people that has some experience here against the universe
(26:35):
or at the University of Texas, but now they get
to take on their former team.
Speaker 10 (26:41):
Yeah, you know, I every week on Monday morning, I
just try to do like a little quick who's next
for Texas And a section in the last couple of
years is.
Speaker 6 (26:51):
Always former Longhorns on the team.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
And you know, you ad you had the you.
Speaker 10 (26:56):
Had Gallett and Bledsoe, you add Thompson and those are
three guys who I think have stepped into big roles
for the program. And Brendan Thompson's one of their go
to receivers. So and you know, I think in the
case of Gallett and Bledsoe, they you know, they transferred.
But I don't think there's any major ill will and
(27:19):
I don't think there's any major ill will from Thompson,
but he said some things I think at SEC media
days or maybe before the season, where you know, you
gotta you have to both go where you're wanted and
you have to go where you fit. And Spearman Texas
to Austin, Texas is a long way and a very
different culture, and you know, Spearman's a long way from everything.
(27:41):
But you know, Brendan, it just didn't work for a
variety of reasons and injury and personal fit.
Speaker 6 (27:47):
And you know, luckily players these days have.
Speaker 10 (27:49):
The opportunity to find something they think is better for themselves.
And I think after a stop at Oklahoma where he
was just part of a terrible offense, he's found what
he needed in in Jeff Levy, but in in Mississippi State,
both in you know, fitting in Start Bolt and also
fitting in that offense.
Speaker 3 (28:09):
Joe, this is an opinion question, not so much analytical one.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
Uh. And your opinion, what do you think that needs
to be done to spark this Texas offense?
Speaker 10 (28:23):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (28:23):
I mean free agency that there are no trade deadline,
there's no free agency season.
Speaker 10 (28:29):
One of my one of my things I'm going to
look at though, is you know where Texas may be able.
Speaker 6 (28:34):
To find some work in the r p O game.
Speaker 10 (28:37):
When you're when you're running that and and you know,
you basically extend the old school option play pass, the
line of scrimmage. You're always trying to make one guy wrong,
and it just kind of feels like they haven't done
that as much. And Start talked a little bit about
how the r p O s with quinn Ewers. It
was hand off or passed with the occasional bull. This time,
(28:57):
it sounds more like just conventional zone reach. And if
that's the case, that's that's an element of Texas offense
that's not there, and that's not always easy to see,
even when you're looking at the big film. You know,
sometimes handoffs just look like handoffs. But then again, you know,
if you see every all these guys run blocking and
then Art still pulls and throws to go. Yeah, there's
(29:18):
the RPO, but there there are some ways to tell.
That's what I'm gonna dive into today. We're on inside
Texas to see, you know, how he's doing in that area,
and you know, maybe if that's somewhere that Texas can
try to unlock, or if it's just part of the
you know, a symptom or just another ailment in the
overall offense in the LAIS.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
Yeah, it's been been a tough, tough outfit to kind
of figure out when it comes to this Texas offense.
In some of the play designs, I'm gonna be honest
with you, they're actually okay. It's just the fact that
you're missing wide open, wide receivers running across and tight
ends and it just kind of puts a bad taste
in your mo and then the next thing you know, boom,
(30:01):
you get a big play running the football with the
quarterback scramble. So still a work in progress, but I
think we're gonna be okay, and hopefully by the time
this team returns against Vanderbilt next week, we're talking a
little bit better about what we saw this Saturday with
this Texas offense. As always, Joe Man, we appreciate you,
(30:24):
thanks for taking the time. Thank you, Joe absolutely, guys,
thank you. There is Joe Cook of Inside Texas. You
can follow him at Joseph Cook eighty nine. Coming up next,
we're gonna have this conversation big questions that was asked
on SARK yesterday and I got some information that might
help you out, and we will give you a chance
(30:46):
to win a family four pack to the Texas Stars.
Make sure you tune in right here on the morning
kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred This Zone. Welcome
back to the morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Carbar Hard's World Strongest Man,
d Mark Henry and of course Marcus behind the board.
And now is your opportunity to win a pair, not
(31:07):
a pair, a family four pack of tickets to go
see the Texas Stars versus the Iowa Wild this Friday,
October to twenty fourth at the HB Center in Cedar Park.
All you got to do is tap that red microphone
on the new and improved and always free iHeartRadio app
the one by AM thirteen hundred the zone, and leave
the keyword of the day forward, Forward is the key
(31:28):
word for a chance to win a four pack of
tickets to go see the Texas Stars versus the Iowa
Wild this Friday, October to twenty fourth, fourth at the
h EB Center in Cedar Park. I want to get
back into the conversation with Coach Shark and Coach Shark's
ability of the play calling and what he's seeing so
far this year. But one of the questions that was
(31:50):
asked of him, what is the offensive philosophy moving forward
for this team?
Speaker 6 (31:55):
Now?
Speaker 7 (31:55):
I think that's a fair question because you know, as
a staff, we have to have the real conversation of Okay,
what do we do to help our players be successful?
And it's not about what I know, It's not about
what looks good on the whiteboard when you draw it up.
Speaker 6 (32:13):
In there.
Speaker 7 (32:13):
It's about what are our guys going to execute really well,
predicated on the defense that we're playing, and where are
our strengths, and so, you know, without divulging what we're
gonna do game plan wise, I do think you'll see
some adjustments this week to what we do. But at
the end of the day, we have to make sure
we're playing complimentary football with our defense. I think we
(32:36):
made that shift in that adjustment about three weeks ago
to say, Okay, we're playing really good defense, we're playing
really good on special teams. Let's make sure we're playing
a complimentary brand of football. To continue to enhance the
way we're playing in those two phases and play in
a style to where hey, we're protecting the ball. All right,
we're going to play a field position game. But to
(32:58):
do that, you have to execute third and one six, right,
You got to extend those drives. And so that's got
to become a big point of emphasis of ours there,
because if you play that way and you're not taking
as many risks, you're not taking as many chances down
the field, then you've got to be really efficient in
those in those third down distances, and then you've got
to be really efficient in the red zone because you know,
(33:19):
the game can shrink and so there's not quite as
many opportunities. You got to be really efficient. So we
got to have a great plan in the third and
medium to short range. We got to have a great
plan in the red area to make sure we're putting
our guys in position to be successful.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Oh that's that's what I was telling you yesterday. They're
not intentionally on their side of the field. They're not
taking chances because they want to get out of their
own shadow of their end zone. And then they're comfortable
with playing the punt game because they have a good
punt game. They have a good special teams, so they
(33:55):
know that, Okay, got a great defense and you have
a great.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
To set up your great defense with them with their
back against the gold post.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
So like that, that creates offense for them. So they're
they're playing a different game. Maybe maybe we take a
couple of chances, but that would throw their defense off.
I think people are loading the boxes up and they're
trying to let that Texas is playing kind of into
(34:29):
the other defenses.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
But you know, he said they'll be doing something different.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
Yeah, Well, one thing that's not going to be different
is the fact that he is not changing his offensive
play caller, which is him. And the question was asked
yesterday by Anwar Richardson if he had thought about giving
up play calling duties. Oh, you don't have that one.
(34:55):
Have you ever number twenty six? Well, anyway, I will
get it. Yeah, we're gonna end up getting it here
in just a second.
Speaker 3 (35:02):
But yeah, it was. So the question is this, have
you ever thought about giving up the play calling?
Speaker 7 (35:09):
And if not, then why? Because that's why I got hired.
I was a really good offensive coordinator. So I just
I believe in what we're able to do. You know,
every year we have to continually evolve, and there's years
we're gonna be better on offense and we are on defense.
There's gonna be years we're better on defense and we
are on offense.
Speaker 6 (35:27):
You know.
Speaker 7 (35:27):
But it's like if I was if I was the
best outside sales guy and and then I had a
startup company, surely I'm gonna go to the sales meetings
if I'm trying to sell something, right, And so if
you if that's one of your strengths, I'm always gonna
tap into the strength that I have, and I think,
you know, being a play caller on offense is one
(35:47):
of my strengths.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
Some may disagree, that's okay.
Speaker 2 (35:50):
Shout out the am war for asking a serious question
because a lot of times like you get the softballs,
you get the get the kid glove questions, and you
don't really get any information other than an injury report
because you have to be truthful on the injury report.
Speaker 3 (36:10):
That that seemed like a really really great answer from
coach Sark. Yeah, it did.
Speaker 1 (36:14):
But the one thing that I'm gonna go back to
is the last time a team won a national championship
with the head coach calling plays was win twenty thirteen
with Jimbo Fisher when he won at Florida State. No
other coach has won a national championship as the play
caller time before that, playing behind all the time before
(36:36):
that was Tom Osborne when he won a national championship.
That was a long time ago. That was a long
time and I was shout out to my guy TJ
for sending me that. He sent me that a couple
of weeks ago. And look, Sark is a great play caller.
We understand that. But Sark is also the head coach
(36:56):
of a football team at a university. That is the
main of your time. Your time, And I know he's
got Brandon Harris going to certain meetings and doing things,
but there's a lot that goes into running an organization,
and that is what he is, He's running an organization.
His point was valid about if I'm the top salesman
(37:17):
and I want to start my company, I gotta go
sell to make sure my.
Speaker 3 (37:21):
Company is run right. And I thousand percent get that.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
But now you're at a point, this is year five,
that some trust has to be built with some other guys.
And I don't know if the person that's gonna call
the plays is on this staff, you may have to
go out and get a guy.
Speaker 3 (37:39):
You may need to uh Mcbrown didn't call it a
didn't call the play exactly and mac Brown was a
former offensive coordinator.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
So yeah, you know, you have to graduate yourself to
the CEO position sometimes too, where you can oversee a
lot of things.
Speaker 3 (37:59):
You can still be here own, you just don't have
to be the guy.
Speaker 2 (38:02):
I think I think that's what he loves more than
being the CEO.
Speaker 3 (38:08):
I think that's what he said.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
What he said, he said, take a lot of pride
in that. Absolutely understand it. But the offense isn't working
right now.
Speaker 3 (38:18):
It does not look the.
Speaker 1 (38:22):
Yeah, the on the offense at this particular time. And
I'm not saying that it can't be fixed. I'm not
saying that. But we are going into week eight. I
still have hope. We're We're in we ate, So there's
some things that have to be figured out. You gotta
have faith in this whole thing. Our number one is
(38:44):
in the books. Our number two is just around the
corner NFL doubleheader action. I know you like that, Mark,
we'll talk about it. I gave a guy some love
that needs more love, and I'll tell you why. And
just a minute right here on the Morning Kickoff on
sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
Welcome back to.
Speaker 1 (39:07):
Our number two of Turn the Page, Tuesday edition of
the Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Mike Harballhart's World's Strongest Man w W
Hall of Famer, the Mark Henry, and of course we
have our guy Marcus behind the boards. And we gave
a child shout out to the Blue Jays as they
punched their World Series ticket with a four to three
(39:29):
victory over the Mariners behind George Springer doing what he
always does. Get Springer the dinger with another three run
home run the left center field. We also got a
chance to hear coach talk to our guy Joe Cook
of Inside Texas. Coming up at eight seventeen, we will
(39:49):
recap the NFL action from around the NFL, but right
now we want to have a conversation about what we
saw last night.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
The The first game was the Lions and the Buccaneers.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
They did a special on Baker Mayfield out. A buddy
of mine text me and said, bet everything you own
on the Detroit Lions, because when they do those types
of things, it changes the whole narrative of the football game.
And that is exactly what happened. The Bucks lose to
the Lions twenty four to nine. But the biggest story
(40:25):
out of that game wasn't just what we're about to
hear in a second. It was Mike Evans being injured
with a concussion and a broken clavical It was his
first game back from a hamstring injury, and now it
looks to be he's gonna be out for a little
while longer. You know, as well as I do you
break your collar bone? You're claviical, and of course you
(40:47):
got a concussion on top of that. My man is
really really going through it. But the story is Jamiir
Gibbs and he let everybody know that he is sonic
and he makes it happen.
Speaker 11 (41:01):
Won't happen a lot of time to throw it here
is kids out of the backfield? Good grow good stop
cutting m Gibbs out of bounds near.
Speaker 4 (41:09):
The forty.
Speaker 3 (41:12):
Flight. I'm not a DV. Right after that got there,
Gus Gibbs foot race winningfield.
Speaker 1 (41:20):
Can't get there?
Speaker 11 (41:22):
Touchdown Lions person go up on the five? Why not
Gibbs again? Spinning touchdown.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
Two hundred and eighteen yards of total offense by Jamier Gibbs.
You talk about talent. You know, we were talking about
Sakwon Barkley. We talked about Jon Robinson. I forgot not
giving love to Jamiir Gibbs. Jamiir Gibbs is a special,
(42:07):
special talent. He got up to twenty two miles an
hour on that big touchdown run for seventy eight yards.
He got up to twenty two miles per hour.
Speaker 3 (42:19):
Cars.
Speaker 1 (42:20):
It can't get like that, right, So you start to
look at what this team is and then you look
across they were struggling last night. Baker Mayfield. We loved
us some Baker Mayfield. He's a competitor, but last night
he had no shot last night.
Speaker 2 (42:35):
It was not even up to him last night. Right
that defensive line they didn't have to blitz.
Speaker 6 (42:41):
They had.
Speaker 2 (42:43):
Seventy pressure rate from four down linemen. Yep, I mean
I think it was something like thirty plays were.
Speaker 3 (42:54):
Affected by the defensive line.
Speaker 2 (42:57):
Loan. They had nine defensive line breakups where they knocked
the ball down. They ran an offensive lineman into the
quarterback and forcing to throw it away.
Speaker 3 (43:09):
Like man, when you you if you.
Speaker 2 (43:11):
Don't have to bless and you can allocate your linebackers
to middle coverage, Uh, that's what happens.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
And and and the peanut punch was in full effect.
There was nobody that was more happy than Al Harris.
Speaker 2 (43:24):
The secondary's coach was losing his mind because his guys
in that secondary they were beating the wide receivers up.
Speaker 1 (43:36):
Aden Hutchison coming off the edge, he looks like he's
back to the form.
Speaker 3 (43:41):
And before he got hurt.
Speaker 1 (43:43):
We know that this defense with Dan Campbell and what
he brings to the table, the energy that they have.
Jared Goff continues to play at a high level. Almara
Saint Brown is just he just can't be stopped. He
every time you think Amarah is, you realize no, He's
not done.
Speaker 3 (44:02):
He continues to make plays.
Speaker 1 (44:05):
I wish that they got the tight End a little
bit more involved last night, but that was selfish because
I had him on my fantasy team, so I needed Sam.
Speaker 3 (44:14):
You know what, Detroit, I'm guaranteeing they didn't care. No
that they did not.
Speaker 1 (44:19):
They are five and two along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
They're both sitting at five and two. So that was
the opener. The game that everybody was talking about, not
because it was gonna be a good game. It was
because it was taking so long to start. Started at
nine o'clock Central time. Is the Houston Texans, the Houston exactly.
(44:42):
The Houston Texans went up to Seattle and they were
down fourteen to nothing. They tried to creep back into
the game, but they kept finding ways to shoot themselves
in the foot, and they ended up losing twenty seven
to nineteen. Normally we would talk to Mark Vandermere about that,
but because they were pressed, well, he's sleeping, and uh,
(45:04):
we decided we're going to move him to Wednesday to
get his thoughts on what happened. They're the Houston Texans
are now two and four in a strong division. When
you start to look at Indianapolis coach have running away
with that.
Speaker 2 (45:19):
There's no relief either because they every week they have
a dog in front of him.
Speaker 1 (45:23):
Yeah, the Indianapolis Coats now are six and one. The
Jacksonville Jaguars lose in London to the Rams. Uh now
they are four and three. But the good thing is
the Tennessee Titans are terrible, so they're not in last place.
If you're a Houston Texans fan, So did you see
the Tennessee News I sent you about Lockett? About Lockett? Yeah,
(45:46):
he luck was like listen, man, y'all not playing me.
I'm out of here, Like let me go.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
He's old, Like I know he he ain't playing for
a reason. Man, he might need to join the coaching
staff somewhere.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
Because that's that's how I think that was the plan,
have them on the team as a playoff coach.
Speaker 3 (46:07):
Yeah, try to try to lead them. I'm like, yeah,
you said there, And I was like with all these
wite like, what are we doing? He might then the
release might work for him.
Speaker 1 (46:17):
He'll go play for Tampa Bay because Mike Evans is
out and see if he could go get help them out.
But you start looking at that AFC South and what
we're seeing from the Colts, and we'll talk a little
bit about them in just a minute. But going back
to the Texans, it looks like Nico Collins now has
a concussion. Uh, they had Kirk out of the game,
(46:40):
they still don't have enough to go out there into
a battle with any other team.
Speaker 2 (46:46):
Well, we'll find out what these young guys have now,
Higgins and Noel. Yep, you know we'll find out because
they're gonna have to play.
Speaker 3 (46:53):
They're gonna have to start.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
So listen, Marcus, I don't know if you got any
connections down there in Houston, but you might want to
call your peoples.
Speaker 3 (47:03):
And uh, it was a strap up, get ready. I'm
more concerned about my running game because Chubb and Marks
combined for like what thirty one yards?
Speaker 9 (47:13):
The most the team leader was strive was twenty five exactly,
and that was on two carriers. He had twenty five
of the thirty one yard No twenty.
Speaker 3 (47:24):
Five of the fifty six yards. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (47:28):
Not a good look, bro, Not a good look for
the Houston Texas. And this is the deal that really
we can talk about for a while is they got
rid of their offensive coordinator to bring in another guy.
Speaker 3 (47:41):
He's sitting at home, like told Josh, yes, and this
ain't even close.
Speaker 1 (47:46):
Both offensives were bad, and like Mac Brown used to say,
it's an epidemic. There's a lot of bad offenses out there.
There's a lot of things that are happening. An epidemic.
Tackling is bad. It's an epidemic out there. And the
worst thing about the Texas is they were still in
the game late. There was one play away from having
a last opportunity and they get a personal foul on
(48:09):
a lay here. Well, not only that, they ran two
of the same plays and the announcers was like, I
don't know, why are they running that play?
Speaker 3 (48:17):
It is not going to work.
Speaker 1 (48:19):
But you brought up something that was spot on earlier
during our time in between breaks, and you were talking
about the fact that Woody Marks is not a short
yardage back and they kept trying to run him in
short yardage is.
Speaker 3 (48:34):
Light in the back pocket exactly.
Speaker 6 (48:37):
What is it?
Speaker 3 (48:37):
One hundred and ninety pounds?
Speaker 9 (48:38):
You had the ball at the one yard line, and
you called two play action passes and a rush with
Woody Marks, and you got Nick Chubb on.
Speaker 1 (48:48):
The team exactly exactly. And I'm still confused about what
is truly going on with Joe Mixon. Does he have
something else that is key because his name is not
even being brought up.
Speaker 2 (49:00):
Is it all still the eye like then then the
fire works that's hair hairs?
Speaker 1 (49:08):
Yeah, I mean maybe his eyes. He may not be
able to see what's going on. He don't want to
see you.
Speaker 3 (49:15):
I know for sure. I don't want to see it,
that's sure.
Speaker 1 (49:18):
But it's a tough look for the Houston Texans, the
team that we thought was going to be a lot better.
Speaker 3 (49:25):
They would win eleven games, and that's not even close.
Speaker 2 (49:29):
As the Great Red Fox used to say, put it
out your mind, just forget about. Yeah, yeah, you want to.
Speaker 1 (49:42):
Pull up Texans fans because this is a tough, tough season.
If you are going to be a Houston Texans fan
or if you are a Houston Texans.
Speaker 3 (49:52):
Fan, nobody's jumping on that bandwagon right now.
Speaker 1 (49:55):
No, they're staying as far away from it as they
possibly can. Coming up next, we're gonna continue to talk
about the NFL, a lot of great games and a
lot of great plays that were happening. Mike up Parsons
became Michael Parsons again this past weekend and continues that
quest right here on the morning kickoff on Sports Radio
(50:17):
AM thirteen hundred The Zero. Coming up in the next segment,
we'll have the World's Strongest Man bringing you his World's
Strongest take. Then we'll close out the show. MBA is
back tonight, folks. The Texas teams, one of them starts
off the season tonight. The others will start off later
in the week, and I cannot wait for that. This
(50:40):
is normally when we'll have Mark Vandermere on of the
Houston Texans, where you can hear the Houston Texans right
here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone, and
you probably heard it here last night. But because of travel,
I didn't want to wake him up today. I didn't
want to do that to him. So we're gonna look
at you and I try, I try. I look at
that for him. Text them early yesterday, I said, bro,
(51:02):
that's gonna be tough for you. He's like, I appreciate you,
but I wanted to get into the conversation about the NFL.
As we look across the NFL, which started last Thursday,
and you saw the Bengals with Joe Flocco get the
w against the Steelers. The Steelers are still four and
two in the AFC North and the Bengals are right
(51:24):
there with them at three and four with Jege there's
still you know, Mark, Mike Tomlin is ready to fight somebody.
Then on Sunday, you had the La Rams defeat the
Jacksonville Jaguars in that early game, Matthew Stafford big ball game,
passing the football, Davonte Adams scoring a bunch of touchdowns.
(51:45):
Now the Rams are five in two. The breakout the
Bears folks Chicago, they are now four into as well,
with a twenty six to fourteen victory over the New
Orleans Saints.
Speaker 3 (51:59):
New Orland Saints are just bad.
Speaker 1 (52:01):
DeAndre Swift had won hell of a football game for
the Bears nineteen carries, one hundred and twenty four yards
and a touchdown. The Browns defeated defeated the Miami Dolphins
thirty one to six.
Speaker 3 (52:18):
I want you to hear from Mike McDaniels again. We
got Tom. Yeah, we got Tom today. We got Tom today.
Speaker 1 (52:25):
The Browns defeated them thirty one to six, and they
were talking about Tua and we've got a chance to
listen to him yesterday talk about the situation, the quarterback
deal and what's going on. When we had Quinn Yours
get an opportunity to play, and Quinn went in and
looked great, But.
Speaker 3 (52:41):
The question was, what are you gonna do with Tua?
Speaker 1 (52:45):
Tua has thrown six interceptions in two games, and obviously
he has not been playing at a high level. But
Mike McDaniel said, we're sticking with Tua. He just hopes
one thing doesn't happen.
Speaker 3 (52:57):
Yeah, he's gonna take the Stamps this league and he's
gonna their start this week. In my expectation is that
we don't throw ten picks way to show you confidence,
Dot coach, is he your starting quarterback? Head coming?
Speaker 1 (53:16):
I don't think he's gonna be your starting quarterback much longer.
Quen Yours went five of eight in that ball game.
And as we're talking right now, to attack of a
law is as eleven touchdowns and ten interceptions with a
QBR of forty two point five. Mike mcdale is going
(53:40):
down in a blaze of glory with his quarterback because
he's still giving him that opportunity.
Speaker 3 (53:46):
He's like, I went to war for you, exactly. This
is what you do to me. I'm gonna stay on
this heel with you. And if we're going down, we're
going We're going down.
Speaker 1 (53:55):
If I'm going down, you coming with exactly, mister this week.
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 3 (54:02):
So that is tough. They are one and six.
Speaker 1 (54:04):
They are one and six in the AFC East and
the Browns are now two and five in their Central.
The New England Patriots five and two on the season.
They are four and zero on the road as they
went to Tennessee in the Mike Vrabel Bowl and win
the game thirty one to thirteen. The Titans are firing everybody,
(54:28):
and that might be the best thing that's happened. Mark
just talked about Lockett saying, I'm up out of here. Yeah,
this is not a good look for you. Cam Woard
twenty five of thirty four, two fifty five and one touchdown.
Speaker 3 (54:41):
He still needs to be better.
Speaker 1 (54:43):
The Kansas City Kansas City Chiefs destroyed the LA, well,
the LA the Las Vegas Raiders thirty one to nothing.
They had their full complement of players, the Chiefs. That is,
they are dangerous.
Speaker 3 (55:00):
They looked so dangerous.
Speaker 2 (55:02):
And and there was the one point they had Hollywood
Brown and Worthy on the same side and Rice on
the other side with Kelsey and Kelsey was a tight
end on the on the on the right side. With Rice,
they ran like a little Remember how we said that
(55:22):
Texas route where the whip route. They ran that with Hollywood,
Brown and Worthy ran out. Both of them were wide open.
Speaker 3 (55:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (55:33):
When I say wide open, I mean there was the
both defensive backs were like three yards four yards behind
wid Fevers.
Speaker 3 (55:41):
I'm like, good Lord, like Patrick Mahomes, he don't even
have to be on point, he is. He is out there.
Speaker 1 (55:47):
And that was the one thing that they were hopeful
for that they would have those types of backs, I
mean types of players. With Rashi Rice coming back to
two touchdowns in his first game back pro bowler again exactly,
The Eagles defeat the Vikings twenty eight to twenty two.
Eals Eagles are five and two and the Vikings fall
(56:09):
to three and three. They need to get JJ McCarthy,
and I know they're they're looking at themselves in the
mirror and saying, I cannot believe we let Sam Donald go.
We let Sam Donald go to Seattle. He looks like
a million bucks about fifteen actually, And then you look
at what they are as an offense where Carson Wentz
(56:30):
and JJ McCarty. They don't know what's gonna happen with him.
It's gonna be rough. The Panthers defeat the Jets thirteen
to six. Justin fields. You might as well just go
ahead and start modeling, because this is gonna be it
for you. Because model Yeah, because he needs to do
something else. He's in New York. Get it be on
a poster somewhere. Go get that done. Because they need
(56:53):
running back is what he needs to do. That might
be the next move I receive something. Yeah, because he's
athletic enough. We can definitely do that. But the Panthers
now are four and three. If you just told me
that the Panthers would be four and three at this
point in the season, people might be losing their mind.
And that's what they are. The Giants gave it up
(57:14):
to the Broncos. Broncos five and two, Giants are two
and five. Just a great collapse in the second again, Yeah,
they collapsed. And now the Broncos continue to roll. They
are right there in that division.
Speaker 3 (57:29):
The Colts six and one. We talked about.
Speaker 1 (57:32):
Jonathan Taylor yesterday. The Chargers fools go right now. We
keep thinking Justin Herbert's gonna be the guy thirty seven
to fifty five, four and twenty yards, three touchdowns. Shout
out to K Town's own Aronde Gaston the tight end
seven receptions, one sixty four, one touchdown. But the Chargers,
(57:52):
they too are those full goal team that you keep
thinking is gonna be okay in somehow, some way they
are not like they were gonna be a change.
Speaker 3 (58:02):
And I had Hardball as my coach other year.
Speaker 2 (58:05):
Yeah, yeah, I remember that. Yeah, put that out of
your mind while you add it. But the thing that
that's the biggest thing in the NFL right now is
the Coats, the coach or a top three team in
the NFL.
Speaker 3 (58:21):
And here we are again, for the.
Speaker 2 (58:23):
Second year in a row, a New York Giants player
leaves New York and goes.
Speaker 3 (58:32):
To another team, say Coon Barklayt Eagles.
Speaker 1 (58:35):
Not only does he rush for two thousand yards and
it should have been MVP. But you know, they win
the Super Bowl. They won the Super Bowl, so that's
a good consolation.
Speaker 2 (58:46):
Now, Daniel Jones, the quarterback that everybody thought was washed,
he is what's your boy, Dallas?
Speaker 3 (58:54):
He trash, He's trash. Yeah, Bubba duck, Bubba dug.
Speaker 1 (59:00):
That dude is.
Speaker 3 (59:01):
All he does right now is look like a million bucks.
Speaker 2 (59:04):
He leaves the league in touchdowns for quarterbacks over Lamar Jackson,
over Josh over dak Over, what's my guy in Philly?
Jalen Hurst like he's killing it. Daniel Jones is in
an offense that I love. They run a lot of pistol,
(59:28):
They run a lot of zone red stuff, they run
a lot of r PO, they run all the stuff
that an athletic quarterback.
Speaker 1 (59:35):
Should be doing. Texas, take a look a look. I'm
glad to see that Daniel Jones is surviving. He got
out of there and has done a really, really good
job of being a special type of player. So kudos
to him for getting out there and being as good
(59:56):
as he is. Because you start looking at those numbers,
He's gonna be in the conversation for some awards coming up.
Speaker 3 (01:00:02):
Another game.
Speaker 1 (01:00:03):
We talked about the Cowboys and what they were able
to do. The Packers defeated the Cardinals. The Packers for
one and one. They win twenty seven to twenty three.
The Cardinals were in the ball game. No Kyler Murray,
but Jacobe Brissett came out and played well. But the
Packers find a way to get it done and the
forty nine ers. Christian McCaffrey is like everybody talking about Beejon,
(01:00:26):
I want you all to remember that I am that guy.
As he goes twenty four carries one twenty nine with
two touchdowns, and he caught seven passes out of the
backfield for seventy two yards receiving. Yeah, I was wondering
if he was gonna bring that up. Oh yeah he
did great. It's outstanding. That's Christian McCaffrey. Yay, I'm still
(01:00:46):
I'm still riding with b JOONK. Yeah yeah, yah, yeah yeah,
Christian McCaffrey. Way to go.
Speaker 3 (01:00:52):
Yay. Coming up next, we got.
Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
The world's Strongest man bringing you his world's strongest take
right here on the and then kickoff on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred is on. You heard the beat drop,
so you know what that means w W Hall of
Famer and the World's Strongest Man, d Mark Henry brings
you his world's strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:01:14):
Take it away, big fella hard. Yes, you know what
time it is? What time is it?
Speaker 1 (01:01:18):
It's time for the world's strongest take by the world's
strongest man Margus.
Speaker 3 (01:01:26):
Back then they didn't know me.
Speaker 2 (01:01:28):
Now I'm hot, They're all on me. Well, it's time,
and not just for the world's strongest take. It's time
for the NBA basketball season to start.
Speaker 3 (01:01:44):
Let's go.
Speaker 2 (01:01:46):
I am so fired up that I just can't even
contain myself. Uh, there's a lot that went on in football.
We just went through the last twenty minutes of NFL football,
so I'm sure y'all have it out your system. So
now we are going to basketball, my basketball brothren and
(01:02:06):
sister in Ah. Yes, the Oklahoma City Thunder are hosting
the Houston Rockets tonight and then that game is gonna
be on Peacock. So if you don't have your Peacock
put together, gunny, dude, get that situated because that's where
the game will be. I'm excited because this is the
(01:02:32):
team that won the championship.
Speaker 3 (01:02:35):
They'll get their rings tonight, they'll hang the banner and the.
Speaker 2 (01:02:39):
Houston Rockets will be the team standing on the other
sideline looking up at them, do that mad as hell.
Speaker 3 (01:02:47):
That's what usually happens. And we always say, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
This is this is this is a trap game for
the team that won the championship because they spent the
whole off season hearing how great they are.
Speaker 3 (01:03:02):
They spent the whole off season.
Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
You know, popping bottles and traveling the world, and you
think by what the matchup predictors are saying and what
the analysts are saying, that Oklahoma City is going to
run away with this.
Speaker 3 (01:03:21):
Sixty two.
Speaker 2 (01:03:24):
Chance that Oklahoma City beats Houston. I beg the difference.
I sent y'all both a poster of the fact that
Houston has the largest lineup in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (01:03:43):
A six seven point guard, a seven foot two guard,
and a.
Speaker 2 (01:03:51):
Small forward that's six eleven, a power forward that's six eleven,
and a center that's six eleven.
Speaker 3 (01:03:57):
They're big and they're meaty. They're tough guys.
Speaker 2 (01:04:02):
Saint Gun is two hundred and sixty six pounds, Adams
is two hundred and fifty pounds.
Speaker 3 (01:04:11):
These are big guys. So that's the thing that I felt.
Speaker 2 (01:04:16):
Like Oklahoma City would be able to outspeed them out,
you know, out maneuver room. But I don't think that's
going to be the case because when you look at
the injury report Houston, the only guy that's a potential
starter of sixty seventh man is during Phinney Smith that's
(01:04:39):
not playing, so he won't even be starting.
Speaker 3 (01:04:44):
But Jalen Williams.
Speaker 2 (01:04:47):
Starting guard, small forward, extraordinary guy that carried them along
with Shay Gilders Alexander to the championship.
Speaker 3 (01:04:56):
He's out. He's not playing in the spot.
Speaker 2 (01:05:02):
And yeah, I respect Crusoe, He's a he's an awesome
defensive player. He and I and Lou Dort, but you
gotta go against Kevin Durant tonight. Kevin is gonna give
them forty Listen at mart, write it down, Write it down.
Kevin is trying to make a statement. This is this
(01:05:25):
will be one of those moves that will carry them
through this through the beginning of the season. And that's
my take, and I'm sticking to it.
Speaker 3 (01:05:35):
What say, yeah, I mean you start looking at I
heard that. I mean I wrote it down.
Speaker 1 (01:05:42):
I wrote it down, and I'm trying to see how
the matchups would even play out, and there's not very
many good matchups that could could go up against him.
You talked about Jayleen Williams. Jayleen Williams is six'. Five
the Other Jalen williams is sixty. Nine he's. Good his
size does not define his, talent, no, Agree but that
(01:06:03):
wing span is something that's totally different when you're going
up against guys that have wingspan that are seven. Five
their wing span is seven, five and that's all four
of those. Starters and then you Got Amen, thompson who
is unbelievable, athlete who is long, Arm, yeah and he.
Is he is, athletic and he's going to be the
defensive guy on that team because he's so, quick and
(01:06:26):
he's going Against Shae Gilders alexander the best offensive player
Own Oklahoma city AND, nba, yeah and AN nba last.
Speaker 3 (01:06:35):
Year so we'll see how that works. Out Chet holmgren
may not be able to run with that. TEAM i
mean he's, Light, yeah he's a little.
Speaker 2 (01:06:43):
Lighting, adams, yeah two hundred and fifty pounds And San goon.
Speaker 3 (01:06:48):
Is two sixty.
Speaker 1 (01:06:49):
Six, Yeah so it's a it's a different type of
team when you start to look at the team roster
and who they are and what the expectations are for
This Houston rockets. TEAM i look at them, too and
you Got Aaron holliday that's a starting guard for, well
not a starting, guard but he's a guard for, them
(01:07:09):
so he'll come.
Speaker 3 (01:07:10):
In Amen. Thompson we talked About Dorian Phoene.
Speaker 1 (01:07:13):
Smith Fred Van fleet's the only one that's that's hurt
that's out for the season for the, season so he
would have been the one that would have been in
the starting. Lineup you Got Jashn tate as, well somebody
that could come in and give you minutes off the.
Bench not going to be that, effective but he'll give
you enough to be able to take up some of
(01:07:33):
that slack when guys need a.
Speaker 3 (01:07:35):
Break.
Speaker 2 (01:07:35):
WELL i, mean the thing That Oklahoma city had an
advantage on everybody is they have almost all of the
guys coming. Back they have all the guys that contributed
to the championship back with this. Team, right they only
lost one guy from the, unit and all of those
guys were first round. Picks so like, that they have
(01:07:59):
an advantage on other teams in the depth, department not this,
team not Against Houston houston has got Josh. Ogi they
brought in Who Kevin durant was just recently raving. About he's,
like it's like having a football player on your.
Speaker 6 (01:08:12):
Team.
Speaker 2 (01:08:12):
Yep and and not to Mention ree Shephard is he
played really good in the preseason.
Speaker 1 (01:08:19):
And he's gotten, bigger he's gotten, stronger and he was
always gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:08:23):
He had the, talent but he did he didn't have
that physical.
Speaker 2 (01:08:26):
Actor, man once he got to the end of THE,
nba they, say, man you're gonna have to get.
Speaker 1 (01:08:30):
Bigger another guy y'all haven't mentioned on y'all you haven't
mentioned As Tarry. Easton he's another big guy six' eight
coming off. The bench and then we didn't even mention
the fact don't They Have joe smith on this, team
too and he like nine hundred. Years Old, AND clinton
I Mean, jeff Green Not Joseph jeff green kind.
Speaker 6 (01:08:50):
Of like the.
Speaker 3 (01:08:50):
Same.
Speaker 1 (01:08:50):
Guy, yeah yeah and we Didn't Mention. Clint Capella love. City's,
back yeah they. Got depth this is this my either
the deepest team That The houston rockets have had.
Speaker 3 (01:09:03):
A field in a, long time in the. Long time i'm.
Speaker 1 (01:09:07):
Anxious to See how caruso and dort are Gonna Play.
Speaker 3 (01:09:12):
KEVIN durant i just want to. See, it well let's
See what kadi brings to.
Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
The table if he wants to go down there and
bang a, little bit or if he wants to stay
on the outside with all these other guys that are
in the paint, as well there's a LOT of i
would live it that he would stay outside because if
You Have seng Goon and, adams inside they're gonna take
up a lot, of space which is why you got
six To Eleven jabari smith. There too guys like to
(01:09:37):
be inside. The paint you Know what, I'm.
Speaker 3 (01:09:39):
Saying kevin need to stay outside?
Speaker 1 (01:09:40):
Or not coming, up next we'll close out the show
and send You To DAN. Patrick nba we just had
a conversation. About it but There's a netflix SPECIAL that
i want. To see and if you see, my hat
you Know what i'm. Talking about right here on the
morning Kickoff On SPORTS radio am Thirteen Hundred, The zone
what a great, and crazy crazy show we. Had today
(01:10:04):
shout out to Our Guy joe Cook Of inside texas
and of course all the great stuff that we brought
to you today by Hearing From Coach sark tomorrow we
Will Have danny davis Of The Austin american statesman joining
us at seven point.
Speaker 3 (01:10:22):
Thirty four we will Also.
Speaker 1 (01:10:24):
Have, mark vandermer the voice Of The, houston texans joining
us at. Eight seven team to break down that debacle that, we,
saw well some of. Y'all saw the rest of us
was sleeping watching, that crazy crazy game Up. In seattle
(01:10:44):
basketball starts tonight and it is the tip off to, a,
great great an upcoming. Basketball season as we've talked about
and we'll continue to, talk about the All three TEXAS
teams i believe have an opportunity to make a run
IN the. Nba playoffs the problem is. They're older you
(01:11:06):
got to, be healthy and you got to hope that
some of your young players rally to the call to
make sure that all those things are part of the
success that we start. TO see i do want to
bring up this because as a former professional, BASEBALL player
i played For The. MONTREAL expos i was drafted out
(01:11:27):
of high school in the. SECOND round i was on
a major league roster for a couple, of seasons but
didn't get at back in the. Big leagues ninety four
was the YEAR that I thought i was going to
be in the, big leagues and that is the year
that the. Strike happened once the, strike happened things obviously
Changed In Major, league baseball but it was a time
in that season Where The montreal expos was the best team.
(01:11:52):
In baseball that was in the nineties Where the braves
were the. Hottest team But the braves knew That the
expo were going to Win The. World series there was
no doubt. About it it was all through. The organization
we all knew That the expos had the. Best team
well during the, strike season that is when things started
(01:12:13):
to fall Apart, in montreal and not with, the Players
because montreal we used To call montreal the breeding ground for.
Speaker 3 (01:12:21):
Other teams you would develop.
Speaker 1 (01:12:24):
A player next thing, you know they were traded off
because financially they didn't want to pay a lot of
those guys that, Were There, Larry Walker, Markus Grissom, Kenny Hill.
ANDRES galliro i mean we had studs on, That Team,
TIM laker i mean we had a bunch. Of Guys
john wetland was. The Closer pedro martinez was one of.
(01:12:44):
The starters that whole pitching staff was ready to make.
A move but then you start to understand that business side,
of It, and montreal being north of, the border was
not willing to spend a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:12:57):
Of MONEY but i don't think It.
Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
WAS montreal i think it was more of the ownership
group and the people that were Part Of Major league
baseball were looking to get Out of montreal and take
them to where they eventually went to Become The. Washington
Nationals felipe alou was, The Manager moise alou was in,
Left field cordero was. Playing Shortstop, Shane Andrews, Rondel White,
(01:13:22):
cliff floyd we were all part of the organization and
we came up through a town, very deep Very very
there was no doubt that we would have been Hosting The.
World series in Winning The, world series it.
Speaker 3 (01:13:36):
Seems Like that colorado team And, that florida those two
expansion teams seem to get a lot of those playoffs from,
that team.
Speaker 1 (01:13:44):
Right right you start to look at what happened and, you, say,
oh man so tonight or today it's. Already out netflix
has done a documentary of, that team and It is
it is interesting because of the fact that you start
to look at what is this? All about what is
(01:14:07):
this team? All about and then you tell me if
you thought that that team with all those you start
looking at the team and look at all those players
that were on, that roster and, you're like whole league
cal because they went on to do great things and
it was. Outstanding stuff and you look at the major,
(01:14:28):
league rosters the forty man roster players and what is?
All happened there was a lot of trades that were
going on during, that time a lot of different people
that were playing during, that.
Speaker 2 (01:14:37):
Time and all because they just didn't want to pay
the MONEY that i think it was a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:14:43):
More, than that but you understand that this team.
Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
Had a lot of superstars on it that went on
to do the, right thing that had a lot of
great players that you start to look at and, you're,
like damn they were all on the same team and
that was the.
Speaker 3 (01:15:02):
Year done what they could, have been what they could,
Have been and.
Speaker 1 (01:15:06):
It is I'm I'm i'm i'm sad that it didn't
happen because that would have been, an amazing amazing season
for so many.
Speaker 3 (01:15:16):
Different reasons and somebody that played For, the exposed he
was also a fan Of. The exposed to see it
go away must have.
Speaker 1 (01:15:22):
Really, hurt oh, for sure because it it was just
that movement during that time of the game. Was different
it was all, About speed it was all about. Stealing
Bases montreal expos And The Saint. Louis cardinals all we did.
Was run we ran and put pressure. On people and
the game changed so quickly that you start to understand
(01:15:46):
that there were opportunities with different people that were involved
in the game that would have would have changed, their
careers changed. Their lives and, the strike the strike has
changed the lives of so many because now those guys
are able to make that. Much money you know When
When kenny simms god rest is so he used to
always talk about the fact of how being a strike
(01:16:11):
player or being a person that went on strike for
the betterment of, the team all the guys are getting
the fruits of that labor because. Of it they had
to sacrifice for all these guys to be able to
get paid what they're being paid.
Speaker 3 (01:16:25):
Right now and that is what this is.
Speaker 1 (01:16:27):
All ABOUT so i can't wait to watch. THAT documentary
i might watch it. This afternoon as a, Money fact
i'm not gonna wait until the. Evening time might watch it.
Speaker 3 (01:16:35):
This afternoon, Basketball tonight I'm watching THAT'S why i gotta
get it out of. THE way i gotta do.
Speaker 6 (01:16:40):

Speaker 1 (01:16:40):

texas i want To Thank. MARK henry i also want
