Today, on "Turn the Page Tuesday," the guys discussed Texas Football Head Coach Steve Sarkisian's press conference to address what needs to be addressed for next Saturday's game at the Cotton Bowl against the Oklahoma Sooners. The Monday Night Football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars was a barnburner and came down to a crazy play by Trevor Lawrence. into it. Coach Stark came in yesterday right after the
field practice. They he came in and he talked about

(02:10):
the football team. He always gives us as good, bad,
and ugly on Mondays after he's already looked at what
the players were talking about. Now, this is a long
opening statement so buckle up, folks, this week is gonna
be fun.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
You know.

Speaker 5 (02:27):
We really, when you look at it, it was just
not a very good start.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
To the ballgame.

Speaker 5 (02:30):
Force, you know, I think Florida scored the first three
of the four drives they had. Of the three scoring drives,
I think all three drives were ten plus plays in
those drives, so they really controlled the ball. They got
themselves in very manageable third downs. I think there were
five for six on third down in those drives, and so.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
They possessed the ball.

Speaker 5 (02:51):
And on the flip side, offensively, we were not very
good on third down in the first half, and the
majority of those third downs were third and eleven plus.
I think six of our eleven third downs we're third
or third or nine plus, which is not a winning
form of thea for success that goes back to line
of scrimmage. I did not think that we played well
on either side of the ball to the line of

(03:11):
scrimmage in the game. We we are more than capable
to perform better than that, and we're gonna need to
in this conference, regardless of the opponent, to be better,
to be better at the line of scrimmage that way,
you know, a couple of things that were to me
a little uncharacteristic that we're that we're kind of frustrating.
Was you know, coming out in the first half of
the game, I thought we managed the crowd noise really well,

(03:34):
and then in the second half, I think we have
five pre snap penalties that that that that you know,
can mount on you, especially when you get them in
back to back scenarios. So we've got we've got to
minimize the self inflicted wounds from an offensive perspective, and
then defensively, you know, giving up explosive plays and that
is something that we've really prided ourselves on, and we
did not do a great job of that. We gave up,

(03:56):
you know, two explosive pass plays. I think we gave
up five runs that were explosive of runs. And so
when you allow people to get yards in chunks, you
know they can they can move down the field quickly.
So we've got to get back to playing to that
standard as well. You know, obviously, you know, getting the
pump blocked is not ideal. We're probably fortunate that that
wasn't a touchdown, that it was only a safety, and

(04:17):
credit to the defense of holding them after that but
but again, I thought on special teams, we were close
to having some some really momentum changing plays and controlling
the vertical field position.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
You know, three.

Speaker 5 (04:28):
Times we have an opportunity to pin them inside the ten,
if not inside the five. You know, twice we don't
down the ball inside the five, and the other one
we kind of get a bad hop by Jack. You know,
it ends up being a sixty two yard punt that
goes into the end zone for a touchback. So you know,
you're trying to play the vertical field position game and
pin them deep.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
We are inability to do that.

Speaker 5 (04:48):
That was about sixty yards, right that essentially you give
up in touchbacks right there.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
That that we've got to improve upon.

Speaker 5 (04:54):
But to me, one of the biggest storyline of the
game is a lot of scrimmage, you know, six sacks
to none.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
Their ability to to run the ball.

Speaker 5 (05:00):
Our inability to run the ball, I think created all
of the other opportunities in the game. Created their explosive
plays in the past game allowed them to rush the
rush the quarterback on our end. But as I said Saturday,
you know, I really want to commend our players for
their fight. I thought in the second half our ability defensively.
I think the final four drives were three punts in

(05:22):
an interception.

Speaker 6 (05:23):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (05:23):
The offense is ability to continue to fight down to
the final whistle. So that will never be questioned about
our team. We just need to play better. We need
to play better when we start the ball game, and
we will. And at credit to our guys, they they
got back to work today with the right mentality, the
right right attitude that they need to have.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
We got week two in the SEC and.

Speaker 5 (05:42):
It happens to be the All state Red River Rovalie
against a very good Oklahoma team, fantastic defensive team.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Coach Venables.

Speaker 5 (05:49):
You can see you know his his uh, you know
his footprint, his handprint all over this defense. Now in
year three, he's recruited the players that fit his style.
The very active upfront, very athletic group, multitude of pressures,
multitude of coverages. I think they lead the SEC and
about everything first and scoring defense first and passing yards
allowed first, in total first down defense first, and passion

(06:12):
pass efficiency defense first in net punt second, in rushing
defense fifth and passing offense. So you can go down
the line about how great they're playing on defense right now,
so we've got our work cut out for us. And
then obviously offensively, you know, they've got a dynamic play
caller who stresses you with formations, with tempo. The quarterback

(06:32):
is a tremendous player, and they got two really good
wide outs, and so it's gonna be a heck of
a challenge for us.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
The goals to get to one to know this week.

Speaker 5 (06:40):
You know, we got to get back to one and
one in conference play, and it happens to be a
heck of a challenge and in my opinion, the best
game in college football in the regular season.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
This is a great rivalry to be part of.

Speaker 5 (06:49):
Humbled and honored to be part of this game, and
then looking forward to the opportunity Saturday afternoon.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Mark, he touched on a lot of things in that
opening statement. It means that he really most of the
time he comes in his opening statement is not that
long because we play it every week. But this week
it seemed like there was a lot for him to unpack,
and he got it all unpacked.

Speaker 7 (07:13):
Well.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
It sounded like a wrestling promo to me.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
You you build up your competitor, talk about how great
they are, talk about everything that makes them special. And
then you say, what are we going to do with
all the deck the decks stacked against us? What are
we going to do? And I said it yesterday. The

(07:36):
number one thing they gotta do is look in the
mirror and figure out, like what the game plan is
and stick to it. Because Texas looks so out of swords.
It's like, Okay, we want to run, or we can't run,
we want to throw.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
I don't I don't know.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Maybe we should run the quarterback like it was, there
was no identity and this Texas team is the last
three years, well, I don't.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
Think there was.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
I don't think there was an identity because Florida was
bringing the fight to them.

Speaker 4 (08:08):
There was.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
This was a rough, rough game for the Texas Longhorns
all the way around. That's why in the beginning, that's
why I said he had a lot to unpack in
the very beginning about his ball team, what he had
to get figured out. And again he took accountability for this.
The coaching staff has got to get everything figured out.
There's some people in there looking at each other right

(08:31):
now about we have to be better, and we have
to be better asap because this is a run that
this Texas football team is going to be on in
the sec that everybody was talking about before. They were
prepared for this. But then coach Sark was asked and
it was two part question that he was asked yesterday

(08:52):
at the presser, and I thought it was real. I
thought it was important to be asked of this question.
And he said, what needs to be changed on the
O line? And did you make the right decision about
not going after old lineman in yeah.

Speaker 5 (09:06):
Gotta play better, got to coach better, gotta play better.
I think inevitably you can play the hypothetical in the
what ifs. You know, it's what's available and then what
you have. And you know, I think our guys that
we have are more than capable. Like I said, we
got to coach better and we got to play better.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
Period. You got to coach better and we got to
play better.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
And it goes back to your statement of looking yourself
in the mirror and finding out what can I do
to get better. One of the things that I don't
think we're talking about, and I was talking to another
guy yesterday about this, was the seriousness of what is
being missed on that line. And you cannot you know,

(09:48):
people are talking about Quinn and all this other stuff.
I think the person that is missing that is that
would help this line out a.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
Lot is Jake Majors.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
You got to remember, Jake Majors was the one that
was calling out the blocking schemes and the protections and
everything else. I mean, he's not here, he's not walking
through the door. But those are the types of things
that you took for granted because he was here for
so long. So he had that offensive line knowing where
they were supposed to be. And I'm not taking anything

(10:22):
away from Cole Hudson or anybody else that's playing on
that offensive line, but that's an experienced person that had
played a lot of football at the University of Texas
and understood what was making the line so good and.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
Being able to make line shifts and change the protection
is man, it's paramount, especially when you got a quarterback
that hadn't played but four or five.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
Games exactly exactly. So the thing about it that needs
to can't be understated is the importance of an experienceinst
offensive line, and especially the anchor of that offensive line
at center. We keep talking about the fact that they
played well. Those guys got reps. They were still led

(11:10):
by somebody else.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
Yeah, I wish there was a story where you can
go by experience, and yeah.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
You can't do it. You gotta live.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
It's all sold out. That's what s ended up happening.
It's all sold out.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
We're just getting started on this Turn to page Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
We're gonna hear.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
Some more from coach Sark and a couple of the
players as they talk about what they experienced over the
weekend and how important this game is. Coming up right
here on the Morning Kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Welcome back to the Morning Kickoff or
Turn the page Tuesday edition on sports Radio AM thirteen

(11:47):
hundred The Zigon. Coming up at seven point thirty four,
we will talk to our guy, Joe Cook of Inside.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
Texas eight o'clock.

Speaker 1 (11:54):
Mark Vandermere, the voice of the Houston Texans, will talk
all things Houston Texans as a big victory over the
Baltimore Ravens, and we'll have former quarterback and off former
offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners, Cal Gundhy will be
joining us at eight seventeen to give us all the

(12:14):
tea when it comes to the Oklahoma Sooners. But right
now I want to continue conversation about coach Shark and
this Texas football team who came up short twenty nine
to twenty one against the Florida Gators. Florida Gators offensive
Player of the Week for the SEC DJ Lagway, and

(12:34):
the Freshman of the Week ended up being Dallas Wilson.
Those guys get their first home exactly and making plays.
And we talked a little bit about this yesterday. Who
would have thought that Malik Muhammad would be missed as
much as he was. We know Malik can go out
there and play and ball out. But I remember at

(12:55):
the beginning of the week when we saw the injury report,
I was like, I didn't even know he was he
was hurt. I'm like, oh my goodness, you know, but
you know, so be it. We're going back to Dallas now.
Your focus is on the Oklahoma Sooners number six rank
Sooners and both the Coaches Poll and the AP Poll.
And this is a big stepping stone for the Texas Longhorns.

(13:18):
They don't know who they're gonna face, John Mattier or
Michael Hawkins. Hawkins played against the Longhorns last year, more
experienced player now because he had to grow up a
lot last year. But they went and got John Mattier.
He's coming off of an injury. How effective could he
be if he does play in the ball game. But
the story is about Texas and the offensive struggles, and

(13:42):
the question that was asked of him was is it
offensive struggles? Is his offensive struggles due to inexperience or
is it due preparation. So here's what coach Sark had
to say. You know, we've had moments.

Speaker 5 (13:58):
You know, I heard about for the first two or
three weeks was about the passing game, and we kind
of gotten that somewhat fixed and gotten guys healthy, and
guys have found a rhythm, and now we're onto the
run game, and now we're talking about pass protection and
so again, you know, I think ultimately you trying to
find the best rhythm in an offense.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
And and you know, when you.

Speaker 5 (14:17):
Focus on put so much attention on one thing and
then you neglect another, then that can become an issue too.
And so we've got to focus on all of it.
Whether it's a player who hasn't played too much, whether
it's the scheme of what we're calling, whether it's about
the player's preparation and getting themselves prepared to play. Maybe
it's a veteran player that's trying to do too much

(14:37):
rather than just doing his job, and so there's a
variety of things that can play a part into that,
but I think first and foremost for us, it's it's
it's executing on first and second down, regardless of what
we're calling, whether it's a run game, pass game, RPO,
whatever that looks like, because we've got to put ourselves
in more manageable third downs. And you know, it doesn't

(14:58):
matter what league you're in, from league to the NFL,
when when you play third and nine plus football, the
percentages over time tell you your odds of converting a
first down go go down dramatically. And so we've got
to do a better job of putting ourselves in manageable
third down situations. And so everybody plays a part in that, myself,

(15:18):
the our coaches, the play calling, to our execution on
first and second down, to minimizing eliminating some of the
self inflicted wounds and penalties.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
So all of that adds up to we.

Speaker 5 (15:30):
Have got to we've got to get ourselves into more
third and two to third and six type third downs
and they're just the nutting percentages go up that you're
gonna convert.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
And the thing about it is what what What's what
he's trying to explain in that situation is Texas has
been in more third and nine than they have in
third and four. Like, think about that, and those are
those self inflicted penalties that has now put you behind

(15:59):
the change once again.

Speaker 4 (16:01):
Fall start, yes, hold the back to back faalse start.
You got a wide receiver in motion.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
There's a lot that needed to be returned. And listen
last week.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
Which it wasn't his fault the wide receiver in motion
because Arch was calling for the ball and the Senate
didn't snapped the ball.

Speaker 1 (16:21):
Well, Texas last week again was three of eleven on
third down. You're not gonna win very many battle games
that way. The time of possession was to to Florida.
You look at what Florida was able to do with
the time of possession and what I mean by that
they had the ball the entire first quarter. They had

(16:42):
it for eleven minutes the entire first quarter. So you
start to your defense gonna wear down, it's gonna be fatigued.
So the offense has to protect the defense, because the
success that Texas's defense was having was predicated on the
fact that the offense needed to control the ball so
we could be fresh. As games continue to go on,

(17:04):
you getting later starts. It's a it's a it's a
different ball game. So there's a lot that is desired
for this football team. But one of the other thing
is they asked what's going on with the running game
and the offensive line in the RBS, which one is
that fault.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
It's not working, that's for sure, that's what's going on.

Speaker 5 (17:24):
You know, not to not to put it as simple
as that, it just hasn't hit. And you know, we've
we've been roller decks and running backs. I think that's
a little bit of an issue. You know a lot
of times when you when you have a runner, which
traditionally for us, we've kind of got that lead runner
and then a second runner. The lead runner starts to
find a rhythm with the timing of the blockers and

(17:45):
and and we don't have that right now. And we
got a fight to get there as fast as we can,
because I do think there's something to be said about
a runner getting carries. And I know you guys have
been mad at me before or why is one guy
get all the carries and then there's a number two guy? Well,
well there's a reason for that. I think there's there's
rhythm and timing into running the ball. Now, do we

(18:07):
need to block better?

Speaker 3 (18:08):
Yes? Do we need a game plan better?

Speaker 4 (18:09):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (18:10):
Do we need to break more, break more tackles? Yes?
All those things.

Speaker 5 (18:15):
Add up to we don't have a run by running
backs over eighteen yards. We've been spotty from from a
consistency standpoint the run game, and that's what we're fighting for,
you know. And so it's easy just to put our
hands in there and say we can't run it and
let's go throw it every down. I just don't believe
in that that that's not who we are. So we're
going to continue to work at this thing. Hopefully we're

(18:37):
better On Saturday, we'll find out. Do I have to
find out?

Speaker 2 (18:40):
Well, I'm looking for like a little bit of a
little bit more of that tight end blocking bag, like
a lot of the stuff the Cowboys do. Well, if
you can't out block them, then you have to out
scheme them. And we didn't see any of that on Saturday. Yeah, No,
no running scheme tans the free up the running back

(19:03):
to hit it outside or inside. They didn't run one sweep,
they didn't run one counter trade.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
They couldnot they were they were faster, they were they
were getting off the line.

Speaker 4 (19:14):
That was something.

Speaker 3 (19:16):
Well, the problem is they didn't.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
Play Jared Gibson Like Jared Gibson did not get a
carry playing at home, and he's the one that could
break tackles.

Speaker 4 (19:27):
There was there was a change.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
That needed to happen, and they were so caught up
in what was happening to them because they got down
quick and so the running game was not going to
be in effect anyway. You had to be able to
attack down the field, and Texas couldn't do that either.
So when you start to look at what's going on
with this team, there's a lot too unlined and unpacked.

(19:51):
But one of the things that he talked about after
the game was now we got to be even closer together.
Now our teams got a bond together and be tighter
than when you've ever been. But now you get to
see what your culture is and how it's being tested.

Speaker 5 (20:08):
I think at the end of the day I'll be
able to answer that better.

Speaker 3 (20:10):
Later in the week.

Speaker 5 (20:11):
Probably wouldn't be fair to these guys to say, you know,
our culture's perfect right now, because they're all they're going
to do the right things.

Speaker 3 (20:18):
They were great today.

Speaker 5 (20:19):
You know, they came in, they were coachable, They took
to the tough coaching from Saturday. We went through our good, bad,
and ugly. They came out energized. They practiced really well today.
You know that I called up the team and that
was done. I know the offense that the players got
together and they called it up and so their mindset
is all there. So that tells me the cultures right.

(20:41):
But at the end of the day, we got to
play together as a team Saturday, and we got to
play better complimentary football than we have and we just
didn't capitalize on some opportunities to play that way Saturday,
and we need to be better in doing that. We
got to win as a team, and we can't rely
on one aspect or another to get it done. We
got to play really well collectively as a team.

Speaker 4 (21:01):
You know, he can't really win with your finger with
finger point.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
I'm glad that he's they're they're in a good place
where nobody where they're trying to figure all the problems
out and work through it because you know, when you lose,
people start saying, oh man, we got to make a block,
and then the offensive line gets upset, oh man, you
got to break a tackle. Man, Like you know, we
start to point fingers. It's our job to point fingers,

(21:26):
not the team. The team has got to be together, yep.
And I'm glad that they all have a little similar
to that.

Speaker 4 (21:31):
Well.

Speaker 1 (21:32):
One of the things that coach Sarks said, and I'll
ask Joe Cook about this as well. He was talking
about his you know, his team as a whole and
where they are now. You know, obviously the fall from
the top of the preseason poll to now where you're
unranked and now you're fighting uphill because the schedules are

(21:52):
not getting easier. He was asked about how his team
is being looked at, and he said, I want you
to take the other one hundred and thirty five teams
and have them go play at Ohio State in the
swamp and.

Speaker 3 (22:07):
See how they do.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
And everybody was kind of taken aback by that. And
it's like quarter South Florida went into the swamp and
beat through them, So they've done it can be done,
and people are kind of offended by the fact that
he said that, and I don't know how to take that,
because it doesn't matter.

Speaker 3 (22:28):
You're a University of Texas.

Speaker 1 (22:30):
You have to go out there and play everybody and
do well because you have the talent to do that
and the resources. So ding ding, ding ding, go handle
your business. We'll talk to Joe Cook of Inside Texas
coming up next right here on the Morning Kickoff on

(22:50):
Sports Radio a hundred.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
The zone that's frustrating.

Speaker 1 (22:55):
Welcome back to the morning Kickoff right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred. At eight o'clock, we'll go down
to htown and talk to the voice of the Houston Texans,
Mark Vandermere. But right now we go to somebody that's
from he town, but he covers the Longhorns like no other.
It's our guy, Joe Cook of Inside Texas and you

(23:17):
can follow them at Joseph Cook eighty nine. Joe, let's
get right into it. Obviously, this is a big week
for the Longhorns as we've come back after that loss
to Florida, and we'll get back into that. But I
wanted to bring up that quote that was there and
I want to get your thoughts on it. Koch Sark
made the announcement, Well, the statement yesterday that you go

(23:42):
down to you go down and play Ohio State and
go to the Swamp and let's see how those other
one hundred and thirty five teams do.

Speaker 3 (23:54):
Did that kind of catch you off guard?

Speaker 7 (23:58):
It did? It was It was a cheeky questioning. I
got to see the answer and response. But you know,
one of the things is is that South Florida's beaten
Florida and the Swamp this year. And and I also
I think the point that he's trying to make is like, hey,
we played We've played a challenging schedule so far, We've
played into the toughest places to play with a very

(24:19):
young team, and you know, we've come out with two losses.
And there aren't very many teams that would probably have
a lot of to go to and oh in those games.
But I think there are a lot of teams that
might be able to go one in one of those games,
and his isn't one of them. And I think that's
why there's some people taking exception to what he said.
I think, you know, people just are kind of looking
at like, well, Florida's things, whatever, what do you mean?

(24:42):
I don't think what he's saying is all that wrong,
but I don't think it's what anybody really wants to
hear right now, what anybody cares to hear, so especially
with you know, heading to Dallas this weekend and he's
going to defend his team and I understand that, but
I'm not sure exactly what he said is what the
fans are really hoping to have heard. Like I said,

(25:04):
cheeky answer to a cheeky.

Speaker 2 (25:05):
Question, Joe, I don't think that you know Florida is
a awful team after watching them, Uh, there's a lot
of potential. They played three freshmen and two of those
freshmen were dominating Texas, So from the standpoint of being
a rough place to play, that's what coach Suck said.

(25:29):
It was kind of like he always say that, you know,
that's like screaming from a yacht, like we were doing that.
Now with with with being able to whine, I don't
know if it's whining, but it's it's definitely complaining about
the schedule being tough.

Speaker 7 (25:47):
Yeah, and you know it's only gonna get tougher from here.
They're not back in Austin until November first, and that's
when Vanderbilt comes down. That's turned out to be a
challenging game. So you know, one of the things that
I wrote after the game was, over the past couple
of years, this is a team, or the team over
the past couple of years at least, was pretty battle hardened.

(26:10):
You know, they had gone through some some pretty good
wars and made their way out on the other side,
and you know, some of those didn't look pretty, but
they were wins all the same. A lot of these
players just don't have those same that same like battle
hardenedness there. They hadn't had to be in these situations
where they're the ones under pressure. And they kind of
showed on Saturday, and maybe, you know, the comeback effort

(26:35):
was admirable and maybe that's something to build on. But
it's when we talk about a young and hungry team,
you get all the good and bad that comes with it,
and inexperience in those pressure situations.

Speaker 3 (26:46):
Is one of them.

Speaker 7 (26:47):
And now they're an even bigger pressure situation and that
they don't have any margin for error and the rest
of the season like it's that loss too get away
even and because I don't think you can depend on
the committee looking at and three and being okay with
that after what we saw last year.

Speaker 2 (27:03):
I was telling hard there's no quick fix for experience.
And you know, you got a quarterback that doesn't have
a lot of experience, you got an offensive line that
doesn't have a lot of experience. But the constant is
the defense and the running game. The running game. What
are they gonna have to do to get this running
game together?

Speaker 7 (27:21):
They got to improve everywhere else because I don't know
how much they can really improve the offensive line. Like
at this point, if you're throwing three different guys at
at left guard, uh, you know, you're it's kind of like, well,
let's see what works.

Speaker 4 (27:34):
At that point.

Speaker 7 (27:35):
It's not because you really think that any of those
guys are capable. I mean, do you think they're capable
enough to play?

Speaker 4 (27:41):
But you don't.

Speaker 7 (27:42):
You don't think they're capable enough to excel. So I
think they got to start throwing perimeter stuff. They gotta
they got They're gonna have to run archs but they
can't overdo it, and they're they're gonna have to vary
what the passing game looks like.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
You know, it's not just running.

Speaker 7 (27:57):
Pass You can have long passes, you can have medium
passes you can have short pas, So maybe that's somewhere
they need to look in varying how they attack the
field on the passing game in order to maybe free
up a little bit on the run game.

Speaker 3 (28:09):
Quick game, quick game, quick game.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
As my boy used to always say, we're talking to
Joe Cook of Inside Texas. You can follow them at
Joseph Cook eighty nine. Now we'll take our focus to
the Oklahoma Sooners. Oklahoma sitting at five and oh sixth
ranked team in the country.

Speaker 3 (28:26):
And this defense is.

Speaker 1 (28:29):
This was gonna be a tough one for the Texas
Longhorns if you just strictly go by the numbers. That
defense ranks as high as number one in so many
different categories.

Speaker 3 (28:38):
How would you attack this Oklahoma defense?

Speaker 7 (28:42):
You know, as weird as it sounds, I think this
is a quick game and maybe a time when you
try to take some deep tacks on. That's what Florida
tried to do, or that's what Texas trying to do
against Florida, and that's what they may try to do
against Oklahoma. It's just one of those things where that
defensive front is not going to get of Texas very
many opportunities to get any run game going, and now

(29:05):
those linebackers and edges are going to rush the pass
pretty well.

Speaker 6 (29:08):
So I you know what, it may.

Speaker 7 (29:09):
Be time to see what those corners are made of
that game plan. They look a lot like Florida's. That
may be super frustrating, but if you connect on three
or four deep shots, well that could be twenty one
points on three plays and the other fifty can look bad,
but those three look really good.

Speaker 1 (29:23):
When you look at the Oklahoma football team, and obviously
Brent Vinnable's name in the beginning was being tossed around
as getting fired in a short extint. Now he's turned
his team around, got him ranked number six, and that
offense looks a lot different as well. We don't know
if we're going to see John Mattier, but we do
know at some point we'll see Michael Hawkins Junior. What's

(29:46):
the expectations moving forward.

Speaker 7 (29:49):
Yeah, it's gonna be you know, everybody's going to be
tracking that injury report. I feel like Oklahoma's do this
thing over the past couple of years where even if
they know the quarterback's not going to play, they'll suit
them up as much as he can be suited up.
And put him out in pregame, But I'm thinking Hawkins
at this point, and he's improved and he's shifty. They
can do a lot of the same run game stuff

(30:12):
probably with him as they did with my tier. The
past game is going to look a little bit different.
But now it seems like Jade Not has finally come
out of hibernation towards Blaylocks look pretty good for them,
So we'll see what they have to end up doing
to make the offense look different. But Start had kind
of talked a lot about how it's the offense and
not necessarily preparing for a quarterback, but preferring for the

(30:34):
offense and the whole.

Speaker 8 (30:35):
True, no matter what the injury report says.

Speaker 2 (30:37):
There's no way that the Tier doesn't play guys. I mean,
he heart and guile is something that you you can't
judge on a stat sheet, but.

Speaker 1 (30:49):
You can judge a broken hand that you got to
throw the football with that. People are going to be
attacking the entire time, and he's a running quarterback, so
you don't want to put him in a position to
where he's gonna.

Speaker 2 (31:01):
It's not smart, but I guarantee you he's going to
be He's in there trying to get him to do it.

Speaker 3 (31:07):
Yeah, doing like the Dylan Gabriel deal.

Speaker 1 (31:09):
I like what you said about going out on the
field and warming up anyway to see what everybody does,
because Dylan Gabriel did that a couple of years ago,
didn't he.

Speaker 7 (31:18):
Yeah, he was out there, but he was barely even throwing,
and that was a game we didn't end up actually
seeing him with exactly.

Speaker 1 (31:26):
Well, we appreciate you, man, and look forward to the weekend.
Be safe on your travels to Dallas and Arlington, and
we'll see what happens going into this weekend.

Speaker 7 (31:37):
My brother absolutely thank you.

Speaker 4 (31:39):
Guys.

Speaker 1 (31:39):
There is Joe Cook of Inside Texas. You can follow
him at Joseph Cook eighty nine. When we come back
Monday Night Football Instant Classic. Well, I really enjoyed it,
except for I was on the losing end.

Speaker 3 (31:55):
Well, at least my cousin was right here.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
On the morning kickoff on Sports Radio A thirteen hundred
The Zone. Great stuff by Joe Cook of Inside Texas.
Coming up at eight o'clock, we'll talk to the voice
of the Houston Texans, Mark Vandermere, as the Houston Texans
go to Baltimore and get a lot more, a lot
more than crabcakes, and they got the big dub against

(32:18):
the Ravens. But the NFL football Week six is now
at a close, and let's just say the Jaguars handled
the Chiefs with a come from behind victory.

Speaker 3 (32:31):
And it all started with this, I'll shut.

Speaker 4 (32:37):
Down pick dag Lloyd again, Devin Lloyd?

Speaker 2 (32:43):
What a year?

Speaker 4 (32:44):
Still rolling down the sideline.

Speaker 6 (32:48):
One man defeats Lloyd pick six.

Speaker 1 (33:06):
Big man was rumbling for that touchdown. And it's actually
week five as the Jacksonville Jaguars come from behind thirty
one to twenty eight. But that wasn't the key play
to the game. The Chiefs go down, score a touchdown,
take the league back, and then Hunter Lawrence, I mean

(33:27):
Harrison Bucker. Harrison Bucker kicks the ball out of bounds
on the kickoff to put them in a position to
at least try to get a top. But they said, nope,
We're going for the victory. And what did they do.
They got in put in position by big play by
Trevor Lawrence down the sideline into double coverage, just dropped
it in a bucket to Brian Thomas. And you start

(33:51):
to look at Trevor Lawrence a little bit different.

Speaker 3 (33:54):
Right now, You're like, okay, can he get me?

Speaker 2 (33:57):
He was dropping dimes, I mean like really really beautiful throws,
and the knock on him was he had all his potential,
but he just never put it together.

Speaker 4 (34:07):
Is this the season that he puts it together.

Speaker 1 (34:09):
Well, he's got a new coach that is helping him out.
He's only twenty six years old. His birthday was yesterday,
and he finished the game with an unbelievable touchdown.

Speaker 4 (34:19):
All right, it's.

Speaker 9 (34:19):
First and goal with thirty seconds left.

Speaker 6 (34:23):
Now Lawrence goes Town, has to get up, takes the tackle, touchdown.

Speaker 2 (34:29):
Jose away, just like they drew it up. Yeah, fall down,
fall down twice and then break us, break it and
get a touchdown. He's got an unbelievable rapport with Travis

(34:51):
Hunter for them to be in uh, playing together just
for you know, four games, Like he realized where Travis
is and gets.

Speaker 4 (35:01):
Him the ball, Like why is he not playing more
on offense?

Speaker 1 (35:05):
Well, that's something that we were talking about last night,
is how do you not have Travis Hunter getting the
ball in his hand at some point at least three
or four times in a ball game. But they've had
a tough time getting the ball to Brian Thomas. Yeah,
you start to look at what's been going on. But
their defense is playing at an elite level and they
are four and one for the first time, I believe

(35:26):
since two thousand and seven. I believe it was the
day that they were the number that they were talking about.
This is the first win against the Kansas City Chiefs
since November of two thousand and nine. The Chiefs have
been dominant against them. Trevor Lawrence, as we said, eighteen
of twenty five for two hundred and twenty one one touchdown,

(35:47):
but he also had fifty four yards on the ground
with two touchdowns, could have had a third one, but
he tried to go over the top and they knocked
the ball out of his hand and ended up coming
up short.

Speaker 3 (35:58):
But what the story now is.

Speaker 1 (36:01):
Congratulations to them, Lion Cohn and who Dudevo when he
did it. Now people are like man Duvall, whatever he says, whatever,
this what it is. But you also look at what
is happening to the Kansas City Chiefs. Remember last year
they were eleven and oh in one score games, and
we talked about it afterwards. It was like you cannot

(36:23):
survive like that and think you're going to continue to
do it. The football gods don't let that happen. They
flip it on you real quick. So you know what
they are now. They're zero to three this season, one
score games. So this is a changing of the guard,
so to speak. You start to look at what Kansas
City is. They're two and three, not saying they're not

(36:46):
going to be able to come from behind and be
able to turn it. This is a good football team,
no doubt about it. But look at what's happening to Baltimore,
another team that we thought was going to be in
the hunt for the championship. You look around NFL football
and the teams that you thought were going to be
at the top again are now a little bit struggling

(37:06):
to get off the snipe.

Speaker 2 (37:07):
There is no team in football that's a bigger surprise
than the coach to see Daniel Jones go there and
have the year that the bigger play.

Speaker 1 (37:18):
He might be the biggest story, but I mean not
the biggest story he individually, but the Jacksonville Jaguars for
all the coaches that they have run through, all the.

Speaker 4 (37:29):
Position coaches that he's had already as a.

Speaker 1 (37:33):
Starting quarterback, offensive coordinators, head coaches.

Speaker 3 (37:36):
This is the first one.

Speaker 1 (37:37):
That he's actually like, looks like he's got a relationship.

Speaker 2 (37:40):
I think they got lucky because the con family, they
bring the coach in. They given one year. How can
you expect the coach to turn everything around in one year?
The one year that they actually had a good season,
and you look like they had the upward trajectory.

Speaker 4 (37:59):
Coach got in trouble, had had to get rid of it.

Speaker 3 (38:02):
Look, let me tell you something.

Speaker 1 (38:04):
There was no way urban Meyer was going to make
it in that place because he was He kicked the
kicker in the behind.

Speaker 4 (38:12):
Yeah, I told you I'm not got fired.

Speaker 3 (38:16):
Yeah he did.

Speaker 2 (38:17):
He just got himself in trouble. He was too much.
That was the least of the things he did. That dude,
like as the least of it.

Speaker 4 (38:26):
Oh man.

Speaker 2 (38:26):
He would not take the plane home with the guys
because he wanted to go to the Strip club.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
He wanted to go hang out at Uh, he wanted
to go hang.

Speaker 4 (38:33):
Out at Diamond.

Speaker 1 (38:34):
No, he wanted to go hang out in Columbus because
that's where he got in trouble on film when he
went back to Columbus. So yeah, that's an interesting, uh
situation and dynamic when you look at you know the
comm family really well because you worked with them, but
you also have to look at what's going on with
this particular team, and they seemed to really enjoy playing together.

Speaker 3 (39:00):
And that's amazing. What happens, what wins do kind of
draws everybody together.

Speaker 2 (39:04):
Yeah, everybody's having a real Kumbaya exactly happiness.

Speaker 1 (39:10):
We're gonna continue the conversations of the NFL as we
go to h Town. As the Houston Texans handled their
business Baltimore ravens in a big time when this past week,
we'll talk to the voice of the Houston Texans, Mark VanderMeer,
because we are the home for the Texans as well,

(39:30):
right here on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred The Zone.
Welcome back to our number two of the morning kickoff
right here on Sports Radio and thirteen hunt the Zone.
Mike Harballhard's World Strongest Men w W Hall of Famer
d Mark Henry and of course Marcus behind the boards,
and our number one we heard from coach Sart and
we got the chance to listen to a few of

(39:51):
the players. We talked to our guy Joe Cook of
Inside Texas, and of course we just recapped what was
a unbelievable football game from Monday Night Football, and the
Jags handle the Chiefs and they come from behind for
the victory. But we're gonna go to h Town right
now and talk to our guy, Mark VanderMeer, the voice

(40:13):
of the Houston Texans, which you can hear every Sunday
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone.
As they got a chance to go to Bostimore and
they got more than the crab cakes. They ended up
getting a big time victory forty four to ten, and
now they go into the bye week with a smile.

Speaker 3 (40:34):
Good morning, Mark, how you doing.

Speaker 6 (40:36):
I'm doing much better, guys. That was much needed victory, lopsided,
got everything done the right way in that you're taking
out an inferior team, undermanned in this version of the Ravens,
and you did what a good team would do. You
just bludgeoned them. You took it to them. And the
Texans played not quite a perfect game, but about as
close as you could get. And that's what they needed.

(40:58):
They needed a sholt, got the offense going, and now
they have the buy before they faced Seattle.

Speaker 3 (41:03):
And that's an interesting way of looking at it.

Speaker 1 (41:05):
They went and handled the business that needed to be
done against a bewildered Baltimore Ravens team that let's just
be honest, they're not the same football team. But I
know all coaches talk about only thing that we can
handle is what's going on in our locker room, and
that's exactly what they were able to do.

Speaker 3 (41:26):
CJ looked sharp.

Speaker 1 (41:27):
He was efficient with the passing game, and of course
you got some different guys to make some plays as well.

Speaker 6 (41:35):
Yeah, CJ looked really good. I mean, the quarterback rating
was over one point forty. He threw four touchdowns, had
four touchdown passes coming into the game, threw four touchdown
passes in the game, so now he has eight.

Speaker 8 (41:47):
And he's been super hot the last couple of games.

Speaker 6 (41:49):
Look, I know the.

Speaker 8 (41:50):
Competition isn't the same, but what you saw in the first.

Speaker 6 (41:53):
Three games when they were unable to execute in crunch time.
That didn't matter in these games because he didn't have
crunch time, but you saw the seedlings of what they're
doing right now. What they're doing right now is fluid
on offense. They have a lot of balance running the
ball well with Chubb and Woody Marks. Even Damian Pierce
got into the game, but that was mop up stuff

(42:14):
and they threw the ball to so many different receivers.
Eight different guys caught a pass, yet Xavier Hutchinson get
into the end zone twice, Jaal and Nole got his
first touchdown. To get these young receivers going along with
Nego Collins and Christian Kirk, that's big for this team.

Speaker 8 (42:28):
So sometimes you need a game.

Speaker 6 (42:29):
Like that where it's a stats game, gets everybody involved,
everybody comfortably confident, so that way, when you're in the
tougher games, they know they can do it. It's more difficult,
but they have the ability mark.

Speaker 2 (42:40):
When you see CJ, can you please tell him easy
with the Michael Vick impersonations.

Speaker 4 (42:45):
I mean he can be.

Speaker 2 (42:46):
Talked about him not being able to have the speed
he had when he was in high school. And then
he goes out and he runs a long run down
to the goal line, and I mean.

Speaker 4 (42:58):
Is he doing too much? Is he looking for times
of brand new?

Speaker 6 (43:06):
Well? I think that if he knew what kind of
afternoon it would be, he might not have taken off
that way. But you're trying to win any which way
you can. You were in an zero and three hole,
so you have no slip up potential, no margin of
error here.

Speaker 8 (43:20):
It's razors thin.

Speaker 6 (43:21):
You've got to be able to go out there and
win and make plays when you can, and that's what
he did. So I like that part of his game.
We talked about this just don't overdo it, but I
like some of it. Look at my Homes last night.
I mean he's their leading rusher on the season. Now
that's a disaster a bit for them. In the context
of the Chiefs and the way they want to do business,
that's a disaster.

Speaker 4 (43:41):
They're two and three.

Speaker 6 (43:42):
They're not running the ball well at all with the
running backs. But Mahomes has always been able to run
the ball, take off when he has to. And it's
not a big total, but it's big in terms of, hey,
I got a first down when he didn't think I could.
And now we're still rolling with this offense, and that's
what CJ's tried to do. I think all quarterbacks have
to have that club in their bag, and he's shown

(44:03):
it right now. So that's a positive.

Speaker 4 (44:05):
Is it sustainable?

Speaker 6 (44:08):
Yeah? I think it is because look, don't overdo it,
Like I said, But when everybody's in man coverage and
their way downfield, their backs are turned to you and
there's nothing else, go ahead, take off, but slide. Go
go ahead for twelve yards and slide. Be smart about it.

Speaker 3 (44:22):
That's the thing.

Speaker 6 (44:22):
That's what I'm trying to get out here. Be smart
about it. Don't sacrifice the body like Tua or some
of these quarterbacks. You know, even Josh Allen. Sometimes it's like,
calm down. I remember we had Ryan Fitzpatrick for a year.

Speaker 4 (44:35):
Calm down.

Speaker 6 (44:36):
You're not a running back, you're the quarterback. You got
to stay in there. So I think CJ will be
smart about it.

Speaker 1 (44:42):
We're talking to the voice of the Houston Texans, Mark VanderMeer.
You can hear him right here on sports Radio AM
thirteen hundred design. You won't hear him this week because
it is a bye week, and Mark, that's where I
wanted to go.

Speaker 3 (44:55):
What are some of.

Speaker 1 (44:56):
The things that you expect the Houston Texans to clean
up during.

Speaker 4 (45:00):
This by week?

Speaker 6 (45:03):
Well, they cannot get comfortable at all. I mean, if
you let forty four to ten get to your head,
then you haven't been watching closely. If you're a player,
I think there's some human nature here that they think, oh,
we're good now. And I'm not saying they think that, but.

Speaker 8 (45:18):
They should feel like confident I should say.

Speaker 6 (45:21):
About the situation in that they're a better team than
people think. Can they sneak up on people now? I
don't think they'll sneak up on their opponents. Their opponents
know who they are. Maybe they sneak up on the
outside media. You know, you're playing a Seahawks team next
that has not played as well as they usually do
at home. But they're a good team, and when you
look at point differential in this league, they're among the

(45:42):
league leaders, as are the Texans because they just had
two blowout wins and three close losses. So maybe that's
not a great stat but the point is this, you
just got to keep cleaning things up on offense. The
operation was so much smoother. Pre snap penalties were absent.
You had some issues, but it was very mild compared
to what you had earlier when you were just stalling
yourself in these drives. I'm mutch of the Jaguars last night,

(46:04):
I'm thinking, how did the Texans lose to this team? Well,
they turned it over three times in the fourth quarter
and they were still in it. You can't afford to
do those things, obviously, so you got to play clean.

Speaker 8 (46:14):
Like Demiko Ryans keeps saying, well, that's one of.

Speaker 1 (46:17):
The things that I wanted to stick at. The AFC
South looks a little bit different than it had over
the last couple of seasons. You now are looking at
the Indianapolis Colts and the Jacksonville Jaguars sitting at four
and one, Houston Texans two and three, and the Titans
get their first victory on the road this past weekend.
But it's a lot closer division. You talked about the

(46:39):
point differential is plus seventy four for the Colts and
plus twenty seven for the Jaguars, but the Texans are
right there at plus forty seven. All teams are looking
like they're playing better. How do you see this all
playing out? We got a long way to go, but
there's a lot of questions that are being answered right now.

Speaker 6 (46:59):
Exactly. The visions way tougher than we thought. Jacksonville's win
was huge last night. I mean, how often you see
something like that. Trevor Lawrence falling down. It looks like
he's about to go into a coma and then he
gets up and scores the game winning touchdown. And I
thought there was enough time on the clock for Mahomes.
But maybe it's just a different era of the Mahomes
situation here. The Chiefs just don't look like the same team.

(47:21):
Special teams don't look the same. The defense doesn't quite
look the same. There's something off about this Kansas City team.

Speaker 8 (47:28):
But we used to say that.

Speaker 6 (47:29):
About the Patriots and there heyday, when they'd get off
the sluggish starts and then start running away with things
when it really mattered. So I'm not going to anoint
anybody yet or downgrade anybody yet, but I will say this,
the Jags sitting there with four wins and the Colts
sitting there with four wins does concern me, especially the Colts.
I think the Colts are the ones to watch out
for because they have the better roster. I believe Jonathan

(47:51):
Taylor is one of the best backs in the league.
Daniel Jones, he turned back into Daniel Jones the week
before against the Rams, but then he was back to
Indiana Jones against the who might stink they might be
a dead team.

Speaker 8 (48:02):
You know, guys, look around this league.

Speaker 4 (48:04):
Who's really good.

Speaker 8 (48:05):
I don't know Detroit. I guess yesterday I would.

Speaker 6 (48:08):
Have said, I think the Chiefs will take care of
business in Jacksonville. I had to root for them. That
makes my blood boil. But clearly the Jags got the
job done. The Texans already have lost the game to them.
They'll get them back at NRG Stadium in November, and
they have two with the Colts, so they had the
games on their schedule that if they play well in them,
they can take care of their own business. But again,
a long way to go. I just like that everything

(48:30):
looks kind of wide open and everybody should be encouraged
by that.

Speaker 2 (48:34):
Right now, I think the Chiefs would have had that
drive at the end if five would have turned his
head around and caught that ball on that first pass
like that was kind an I don't he never looked
the ball hit him in the Show to Pad on
the front side of his Show to Pad.

Speaker 4 (48:49):
If he'd just turned his head, he could have caught it.

Speaker 6 (48:52):
Uh and worn one on one. He might go all
the way.

Speaker 4 (48:54):
With that one.

Speaker 2 (48:55):
Yeah, I mean it was at least you get to
midfield and then you can give Patrick mahone thirty eight
seconds at midfield, like he could dagger you at that point.

Speaker 4 (49:07):
Like the guys just.

Speaker 3 (49:08):
Magic and it really is incredible.

Speaker 6 (49:11):
Quote. I think he's the best quarterback. There's no doubt
in my mind. They're just not playing like a complete
team right now.

Speaker 3 (49:17):
Yeah, they do look.

Speaker 1 (49:18):
A little bit different, and they've been questioning some effort
on the other side. But one thing that hasn't been
questioned as the Houston Texans and what they've been able
to do, Demico seems to have the pulse of this team.
Is he Is he the one that is kind of
getting these guys to rally, being a former player and
understanding what it's like to be out there in the trenches.

Speaker 6 (49:42):
Yeah, there's no doubt because he's been through it all
as a player and really as a coach because San
Francisco had some rocky years with him as an assistant,
but two really great ones with him as a coordinator.
And his last year there were number one points and
yards defensively before he got the Texans head coaching job,
and now they're number one in point.

Speaker 4 (50:00):
It's here and.

Speaker 6 (50:00):
I think his positive attitude combined with all that playing experience,
combined with when he walks through the door he's a
physical presence, he looks like he's a player, but he's
telling you the right things to do, and the attitude,
his faith, all of it adds up to, hey, guys,
we just got to keep moving forward, working well together.
You know, whatever he does to keep these guys together

(50:21):
mentally and psychologically, it's working. And he's got to continue
to do it because it got off.

Speaker 8 (50:27):
To such a rough start, especially on the offensive side
of the ball.

Speaker 6 (50:30):
But they have a lot of tools in the bag
to work with. They just got to put it together.
And I think that, you know, the Nick Keley talk
has died down dramatic, dramatically this week. Whether he's the
right guy or not. Look, we got a long way
to go. He's still got to prove it throughout the
course of this season and beyond. But that was a
great performance last couple of weeks, certainly the last five
quarters where they scored an insane amount of points. So

(50:53):
I want to see that keep going. Obviously, I want
to see that keep going, but I just want to
see them be productive, efficient on offense, not turn the ball,
and then they'll be in every game because defense travels,
and they've got one of the best in the league.
If not the best.

Speaker 4 (51:06):
I love it. I love it.

Speaker 3 (51:07):
There is the voice of the Houston Texans.

Speaker 1 (51:09):
You can follow them at Texans Voice on social media.
Mark vandermir enjoy the bye week because you gotta have
some energy for the next couple games.

Speaker 3 (51:20):
We gotta make sure you locked in, buddy.

Speaker 6 (51:23):
Yeah, it's an early buye, but we gotta take it.
You know, no choice in this matter.

Speaker 8 (51:27):
Last year it was so late.

Speaker 6 (51:28):
It was ridiculous. Now it's kind of ridiculously early. But
it arrives where it arrives, and then you got twelve
in a row. We'll see what happens, guys.

Speaker 1 (51:35):
Best of love to you, man, keep it going. Thank
you nice. All right there, he is the voice all
of the Houston Texans. Coming up next, we're gonna talk
to our guy. We're gonna go north of the Red River.
Don't lose your mind, folks. Cale Gundhy will be joining
us former Oklahoma quarterback and offensive coordinator right here on
the morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundreds. This

(51:57):
z all, it's Red River rivalry time, and what better
way to kick off this rivalry than talking to our
good friend former tech I mean Oklahoma quarterback and offensive coordinator.

Speaker 3 (52:12):
He is the one and only Kill Gundhy.

Speaker 1 (52:15):
He's part of the sports animal ninety eight point one
in Oklahoma and Kill.

Speaker 3 (52:21):
This is the time, man. People are looking at each
other a little bit.

Speaker 1 (52:24):
Different houses are divided, the stadium is divided, and it's
go time, baby.

Speaker 7 (52:32):
It is go time.

Speaker 9 (52:33):
It's a different environment, it's a different game, you know,
regardless of what anybody says, man, there's just nothing else
like it. The field that you get, you know, as
soon as you walk into that stadium, soon as you
get into the fair grounds, and it's like no other.

Speaker 1 (52:52):
And right now the Oklahoma Sooners are playing like no other.
They're coming in five and oh rank number six. Still
know what's happening with John Materi yet, but this is
a confident football team and most of the confidence just
happens to be sitting on that defensive side of the football.

Speaker 3 (53:10):
They're playing at a really high level right now.

Speaker 9 (53:15):
It's it's the best unit out of the four units
when you look at offense and defense for both teams,
the best unit, the best squad on that field Saturday
will be the ou defense, followed closely by the Texas defense,
and then offensively, it all depends on John Mattier plays.

(53:37):
If John doesn't play, it's I don't know. I'm I
think it's almost a toss up. Obviously, we know the
issues that Texas has been having. They were a night
and day team compared to what they were last year
with the offensive line. They're really really struggling in the

(53:57):
run game, pass protection. You know, just Arch has as
himself as a as a still a young quarterback, even
though he's been in school two or three years. He's
still a true first time quarterback who's you know, has
the weight of the of the state of Texas on
his shoulders.

Speaker 8 (54:17):
So this will be an interesting game.

Speaker 9 (54:21):
If John McTeer plays, I think ou wins this game
twenty to ten. If John McTeer doesn't play, I believe
this could be a fourteen or thirteen. It's gonna be
a battle, you know, just a two struggling offenses. Uh,
two teams that struggle and run the football that have
great defenses.

Speaker 4 (54:41):
Coach, you are being offensive mine.

Speaker 2 (54:44):
What do you think about this Oklahoma offense and in.

Speaker 4 (54:48):
The coordinator.

Speaker 2 (54:50):
How they've adapted to his philosophy so fast.

Speaker 4 (54:56):
Well.

Speaker 9 (54:56):
Ben Arbuckle, the offensive coordinator who came from Washington State
has been a has been a tremendous hire and ton
of tons of energy.

Speaker 3 (55:08):
You know, he's a.

Speaker 9 (55:09):
Great offensive mind, not only uh, throwing the football in
the spread system, but being very creative in a lot
of different ways. And besides that, I mean with John Mattier.
John played in the offense for two years and it
was just a great transition. And and John is really
really good. I mean he he's a guy that has it. Now.

(55:32):
Their run game is no good. Their run game has
not been good at all.

Speaker 8 (55:36):
Uh. Their offensive line.

Speaker 9 (55:37):
Has still struggled like they struggled last year, just being
able to.

Speaker 8 (55:44):
Stay on blocks, move people.

Speaker 9 (55:46):
And their offense is all about John Mattier and being
able to throw the football.

Speaker 3 (55:51):
John Mattier is not there.

Speaker 7 (55:53):
Uh Again, It's like.

Speaker 3 (55:54):
I said, it's gonna be.

Speaker 9 (55:56):
It's gonna be two offenses that are gonna struggle in
the Cotton Bowl. In my opinion, because I'm telling you
this Oklohma defense is really good. After watching that Florida game,
that d line and linebackers for OU, they're foaming out
of the mouth right now and it's going to be
a long day for arch Manning. I believe Saturday. I

(56:16):
believe they're going to chase him all over that field.

Speaker 2 (56:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (56:19):
We're talking to former Oklahoma quarterback and offensive coordinator Cal
Gundhy about this Texas Oklahoma game. And you mentioned it
about your the Oklahoma defense and one of the guys
that stood out from the last game was R. Mason Thomas,
the senior right defensive end. He was able to be

(56:40):
in the backfield of Kent State and he's probably one
of those guys that you're talking about that is kind
of salivating to try to go up against this offensive line.

Speaker 9 (56:52):
Yeah, they've got a lot of depth on the defensive line.

Speaker 3 (56:55):
I mean, they've got.

Speaker 9 (56:56):
Four defensive tackles they can roll through there that can
play for anybody in the country.

Speaker 8 (57:01):
And I'm not saying.

Speaker 9 (57:02):
That they would all four would start, but all four
would be in everybody's uh top two teams on the
defensive tackle. They are that that good. All four of
these guys are going to probably play in the NFL,
make a roster, become a free agent or something. So
they've got depth. And uh, again I'm a little I've
been a little surprised, uh, you know, offensively with Texas,

(57:26):
I mean trying to sarcus trying to run the same
system as they ran last year, and you don't have
you don't have the same talent, you don't have the
same offensive line. You know, they were able to run
the ball so good last year. That play action was
so good for for for quinn Ewers last year. And

(57:48):
you know when a team is struggling and run the ball,
that that Texas is right now versus good opponents. And
I'm not talking about the other three teams. I'm talking
about when they played Ohio State and actually ran it
solid versus Ohiose, but they could not move it a
lick versus Florida, and it's just a feeding frenzy. Uh
you're off into lines trying to hold up. I just

(58:08):
don't see a lot of intermediate short passing game to
get the ball out of his hand. It's it's hold
on and hold on and wait for all these deep
over routes and post routes. And that Texas off into
line is not able to do that right now.

Speaker 2 (58:21):
It's great when you can hit them, but they they
Archer's been missing some of those. He missed four of
them that would have been fifteen yard games. The more
and I mean Yeah, how do you have any consistency
when you don't hit those?

Speaker 8 (58:37):
Well, again, that's you're exactly right.

Speaker 9 (58:39):
I mean there's times that he hits those and there's
times that he doesn't, and so there's.

Speaker 3 (58:43):
Something off, you know what is it might face the
entire time.

Speaker 7 (58:50):
Yeah, that's right.

Speaker 9 (58:52):
And here's their thing, guys, and I believe this, and
I believe that from day one. Again, we put way
too much on this man.

Speaker 3 (59:00):
From from day one.

Speaker 9 (59:02):
If his last name was Smith, he wouldn't have any
of this on him. But since his name is Manning,
he's had all of it on him. And there's been
a lot of people that have that have put expectations
on this young man way way, way too fast, and
people have missed is he talented?

Speaker 7 (59:20):
Does is he can he run?

Speaker 3 (59:22):
Is he got a great body?

Speaker 9 (59:23):
Does he got a strong arm? He has all those things?
But that's just I mean, that's just you know, that's
just bits and pieces that make a good quarterback. And
you know, again, I just I think there's been way
way too much put on him, way too much expectations.

Speaker 8 (59:40):
Heisman all that.

Speaker 9 (59:41):
Now he's a young quarterback still trying to find his way.
That's that's talented and uh, now you put him in
that system that that Quinn had last year, with those
offensive line and in that run game, and then throw
in the play action, he will be he would be
a lot more comfortable.

Speaker 2 (01:00:00):
But he's still.

Speaker 9 (01:00:02):
Again with the weight of the United State of Texas,
the University of Texas on his.

Speaker 6 (01:00:06):
Shoulders to lot to ask for, in my opinion, Kel,
I wanted.

Speaker 1 (01:00:09):
To ask you this because you mentioned it earlier about
the Oklahoma lack of running game and you saw what
kind of is going on with the Texas Longhorns. But
I'm kind of seeing the same thing with the Oklahoma Sooners.
They're not being able to get that push on the
old line, and just like Texas, their quarterback seems to

(01:00:30):
be the one that gets the bulk of their rushing.

Speaker 8 (01:00:32):
Yards and that's not good.

Speaker 9 (01:00:36):
And I believe both backfields have capable running backs.

Speaker 3 (01:00:41):
But no, I totally agree with you.

Speaker 9 (01:00:43):
OU's offensive line run game has not been good at all,
and they still they are struggling, you know, I think
just athletically and talent wise, they're just not able to
get pushed.

Speaker 8 (01:00:59):
So again, this is gonna be you know, there's one
thing I don't know if.

Speaker 9 (01:01:03):
You guys know this, But there's one stat and I
look at stats. I don't look at stats. I kind
of go back and forth, but I do look at
stats when it comes to when you play good opponents.
You know, when you play a lot of these non
conference games, Sam Houston, UTEP, I don't count any of that.
When you play Kent State, Illinois State, I don't count

(01:01:24):
any of that. These teams they're not on the same level.
But there's one stats since the year two thousand, guys,
that has been one hundred percent consistent.

Speaker 8 (01:01:34):
At the end of the game, the team who.

Speaker 9 (01:01:36):
Has the most rushing yards has won twenty three out
of twenty five games in the Cotton Bowl. Wow, whoever
has the most rushing yards wins the game. They've won
twenty three out of twenty five games.

Speaker 8 (01:01:52):
Since two thousand. Now what does that mean? And some
people say, well, you know, hey.

Speaker 9 (01:01:58):
Maybe a team's up really big in the fourth quarter
and the game's over and they get extra rushing yards.

Speaker 8 (01:02:03):
No, what it means is.

Speaker 9 (01:02:06):
Who's winning the line of scrimmage.

Speaker 3 (01:02:08):
Who is more.

Speaker 9 (01:02:09):
Physical, who's got the most physical offensive line, who's kicking
who's but snap after snap after snap, who controls the
line of scrimmage. Who controls first and second down and
gets your quarterbacks in a more manageable third and two,
third and three, third and fourth situation instead of a
third and eight and thirty nine.

Speaker 8 (01:02:30):
You know, who has the most time of possession at the.

Speaker 9 (01:02:33):
End of the game.

Speaker 8 (01:02:34):
Who's the most physical team. It starts right.

Speaker 9 (01:02:38):
There in the old line in d line. Twenty three
out of twenty five that has been That is who's
won that game.

Speaker 4 (01:02:43):
Couse, we're playing the who game.

Speaker 2 (01:02:45):
There's always a guy that steps up and shows everybody,
Like Texas OU Weekend is my show.

Speaker 4 (01:02:54):
Who is that guy for OU this year?

Speaker 9 (01:03:03):
Well, if John Mattier plays, it'll be John Attire And
and you know you're gonna say, well, that's not much
of a step up, But yeah, that's a step up
for somebody who's never played in that Cotton Bowl. He's
a baller, guys. I mean, he's he's a real dude,
and he's I'm not you know, I'm not saying he's
gonna just just light it up if he plays, but

(01:03:25):
he is magical. He he is really really good.

Speaker 8 (01:03:30):
Uh, you know, for the Texas side.

Speaker 9 (01:03:32):
Of the ball I think somebody's got to step up
in the backfield. I think somebody's got to create some
some big plays. And uh again, you know your your
offensive line has has has got to be better, and
they haven't been very good.

Speaker 8 (01:03:47):
So to me, it's it's gonna be a challenge. And
then who on the Texas defensive line is going.

Speaker 9 (01:03:53):
To create havoc and get after that quarterback on a
consistent basis?

Speaker 3 (01:03:57):
All right, I got my guy, Cold Bervard. I'm putting it.
I'm putting it on him.

Speaker 1 (01:04:00):
I've been waiting for him to bust out, and that
would be the guy that I would put that on.
Kl as always, Buddy, we appreciate you taking the time.
This was great information and I love that stat that
you gave me, so I'll be playing paying close attention
to that this weekend.

Speaker 4 (01:04:17):
Enjoy man.

Speaker 8 (01:04:19):
All right, thanks, Mike, appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (01:04:21):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:04:21):
There he is Kill Gundhy, former quarterback for Oklahoma and
offensive coordinator.

Speaker 3 (01:04:27):
Good good stuff right there.

Speaker 1 (01:04:28):
Coming up next, we've got the world's strongest man bringing
you the world's strongest take right here on the morning
kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred is on.

Speaker 4 (01:04:38):
You heard that beat dropping, It can only mean one thing.

Speaker 1 (01:04:41):
W w Hall of Famer and the World's Strongest Man,
d Mark Henry brings you his world's strongest take.

Speaker 3 (01:04:48):
Take it away, big fella.

Speaker 4 (01:04:49):
Marge, Yes, sir, you know what time it is?

Speaker 3 (01:04:52):
What time is?

Speaker 2 (01:04:53):
It's time by the World's strongest take by the world's
strongest Man.

Speaker 4 (01:05:00):
Ah, Guys, back then they didn't know me, but now
I'm hot. They all on me.

Speaker 8 (01:05:07):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (01:05:10):
Arizona Cardinals played the game this Sunday, and let's just
say that coach Jonathan Gannon I think overstepped his bounds.
And I'm not saying slightly. I'm saying he didn't just
step he jumped over bounds. There was a big place

(01:05:33):
seventy two yard touchdown in the fourth quarter where the
running back for them, Amari de Mercado, who is who
played really good in the preseason. I don't know if
y'all remember, like he had like a touchdown in every
game during the preseason. This guy made a mistake and

(01:05:57):
ended up losing the ball and no find a seventy
two yard touchdown. And what did coach Ganna do. He
ran up and he's berating this guy. And this is
you know what, I'm not making excuses because I do
think that the world has become very soft, and I'm

(01:06:18):
not siding with the coach. I'm saying that at no
level should you put your hands on a player as
a coach. You shouldn't touch the face mask, you should
definitely not punch them. He balled his fists up and
punched them in a chest arm area. I think that

(01:06:43):
he should be fined. I think he should be suspended
a game. He needed to get some anger management. But
more than anything, I think that he needs to apologize.

Speaker 4 (01:07:00):
Not where we see it. I think this needs to
be a shut.

Speaker 2 (01:07:05):
Door situation because if you punch me, we need to
have a private conversation, and whatever happens in that private
conversation stays in that private conversation because I'm gonna hit
you back. And I know you might say, Mark violence,
don't be got violence. No, I'm not going to sleep

(01:07:27):
at night if you hit me, I'm gonna be up
like there's no place for it at any level. I
remember you remember God rest his soul, Bobby Knight, kick
the player.

Speaker 4 (01:07:42):
What happened? Suspension? Fine, he ended up getting fired.

Speaker 2 (01:07:51):
Where does the world come to where it's okay for
a coach to physically touch a player.

Speaker 1 (01:07:59):
What's say you, Well, I agree with you. I saw
that night and I thought it was crazy that that
he did do that. The emotions got the best of him.
But he did wake up. He did apologize. He said
he didn't see the video. I woke up this morning
and I didn't feel great about it, and I went
and apologized to the team and to Amari. And that
was yesterday, And I'm sure they did have a conversation

(01:08:21):
in private. But it was a a a bonehead play
by Amari. And more importantly, it was a bonehead situation
by the head coach of the football team. Would would
Amari be in trouble? Would he be suspended if he'd
walked up to the coach and pushed him and punched him?

Speaker 4 (01:08:42):
And was that was?

Speaker 3 (01:08:44):
That was a terrible play call, you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (01:08:48):
But I'm saying it's a situation where it's like, hey, man,
if I walked up and put my hands.

Speaker 2 (01:08:53):
On you, what would be the reasons of that? Then
I would be I would be punished.

Speaker 7 (01:08:58):
Ye, So.

Speaker 1 (01:09:00):
Likewise, yeah, it's it's it was not like he said,
it was not a pleasure to see that happening, And
Amari took full responsibility for his actions, and it seems
like Gannon has taken full responsibilities for his Now the
bottom line is, does Amari accept his apology? Does Amari

(01:09:22):
look at him the same moving forward? Is the two
men that are very competitive in situations that the best
of them was.

Speaker 4 (01:09:32):
That and I don't want to play I don't want
to play that no more.

Speaker 1 (01:09:35):
Well, that's that's that's how you work, and that may
be something that this young man is working through. So
but these opportunities to play in the NFL don't always
happen either.

Speaker 4 (01:09:46):
So he's good.

Speaker 2 (01:09:48):
He just made him He made a bone head mistake
and we all make them.

Speaker 4 (01:09:52):
Yeah, and I think that you can't hit me for
I think.

Speaker 1 (01:09:56):
The coach is saying, he made a bone head mistake
and he went and talked to him and handled it.
But we don't know, to your point, what the significance
of it is and how the rest of the players
are looking at him as well.

Speaker 4 (01:10:07):
Well, you know how I feel about it. How say
what I'm saying?

Speaker 1 (01:10:12):
Hey, that's why they call this the world's Strongest Tank
by the world's strongest man. Coming up next, we're gonna
close out the show and send you to Dan Patrick.

Speaker 3 (01:10:21):
Major League Baseball is front and center.

Speaker 1 (01:10:24):

the one question that continues to be asked is what
is going on with the Miami Dolphins.

Speaker 3 (01:11:50):
But I can't give you an answer for it.

Speaker 1 (01:11:52):
I just want you to hear our guy, Mike McDaniel,
as he breaks down what what the trouble is with
his football team?

Speaker 7 (01:12:03):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (01:12:03):
He was really frustrated at the uh, you know, just
like his as as I was.

Speaker 10 (01:12:12):
And you know we talked about the uh, the challenge
I had to get ready for, uh, the Chargers, and
UH that was kind of the extent of it.

Speaker 4 (01:12:23):
What the hell did you say?

Speaker 1 (01:12:25):
Like, what what is truly going on with one Mike
McDaniel in trying to explain things to them?

Speaker 4 (01:12:37):
I'm listening hard. Did you check his right hand?

Speaker 2 (01:12:42):
He had his hands behind his back. He was hiding
his bait pen. That guy's high all the time. He
got a drug problem. They've got to do something.

Speaker 1 (01:12:52):
We can't just put those types of accusations out there, Mark, Okay,
that means you just can't be out there just saying that.

Speaker 4 (01:13:02):
Speculation.

Speaker 2 (01:13:03):
Yeah, I'm sorry, Yeah, but I'm titled watching a guy
visibly carrying a vape pen, vaping under his under his
shirt and doing all of that in front of where
you can see it. I'm like Kat Williams, you know,
I can see you like, why are they allowing this?

(01:13:26):
And you hear him and it's like, that's not a
head coach Like that sounds like somebody that we've we've
all had that experience where somebody's trying to lie to
you and they well, you know, it's when sometimes you
just gotta you know, you know every now, I mean,

(01:13:47):
somebody did it.

Speaker 4 (01:13:49):
That's how he sounds like, why would you put that
guy out there?

Speaker 1 (01:13:53):
Well, he's got to talk to the media every week,
and it's not a good look, to say the least.
They have struggled mightily, this football team, and just when
you thought that they were going to win, it has
has has faded fast for them. So it'll be interesting
to see what all transpires with this football team. We

(01:14:18):
know what's happening with Tyreek Hill him being out, not
being able to play at this particular time.

Speaker 3 (01:14:24):
So it's going to be a tough go for this
football team.

Speaker 1 (01:14:28):
And if they can't establish some things early, it is
definitely not going to end well in Miami for the
Dolphins or for Mike McDaniel.

Speaker 4 (01:14:39):
Well, this last interview was enough for me.

Speaker 6 (01:14:43):
And this one.

Speaker 4 (01:14:46):
It's last we say.

Speaker 2 (01:14:48):
Yeah, I thought I was listening to him and him
trying to explain what the problem is. Very simple, like
we're trying to throw the ball and we're trying to
do it by.

Speaker 4 (01:14:58):
Scheme and it's not working.

Speaker 2 (01:15:00):
We we're trying to run the ball and we have
guys turn it over. We're not playing well, and I
got to coach better. I gotta scheme us up better.
But right now we're a failing football team.

Speaker 4 (01:15:18):
That's all we have to say.

Speaker 3 (01:15:20):
But instead, you know, that's not what we was trying
to say.

Speaker 4 (01:15:25):
In his mind, that's what.

Speaker 1 (01:15:33):
Yeah, it was a lot of that going on, so crazy. Yeah,
we'll see what ends up happening. You know what's happening
in Major League Baseball. The Dodgers now have a two
o lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Dodgers continue to
get hot at the right time. Great pitching performance again
by Blake Snell. It was a great pitching performance too

(01:15:56):
by Lozardo, who was the starter for the Phillies. They's
right to rally Lake but couldn't get it done. Now
they go to LA up two games to none. The
Chicago Cubs are down two games to none to the
Milwaukee Brewers.

Speaker 3 (01:16:10):
Milwaukee Brewers, the.

Speaker 1 (01:16:12):
Best team in baseball, handled their business yesterday by beating
the Cubs seven to three. The Cubs jumped out in
front early. But the Brewers who play old school baseball.
They bunt, they hit and run, they steal bases, they
play good defense. They put pressure on you as a

(01:16:33):
baseball team, and that is why they've been able to
play the game the way that they have, and that's
why they have a two to old lead as they
head to Chicago.

Speaker 2 (01:16:43):
I'm so glad that the Brewers are having a great
season because their fans deserve it like they are.

Speaker 4 (01:16:50):
I mean, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:16:51):
If there's anything else to do walking, but they they
show up and sell out ye, and they do.

Speaker 4 (01:16:59):
The wayans like in the seventh inning.

Speaker 2 (01:17:02):
Like man, I've been to two games and both times
it was the best baseball experience I ever had.

Speaker 3 (01:17:08):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (01:17:08):
And and the food is incredible, Like how do you miss?

Speaker 3 (01:17:13):
Of course we do.

Speaker 4 (01:17:14):
I don't want to I don't want to move that.

Speaker 2 (01:17:16):
Hey, listen, I told you they had fried lobster tell
on the menu.

Speaker 4 (01:17:22):
Like that play off.

Speaker 3 (01:17:24):
The James actually were in a suite yeah. Okay, so
there's where yeah yeah. Food. Food.

Speaker 1 (01:17:32):
Today we got early baseball as the Mariners take on
the Tigers. UH series is tied. They are back in
Detroit one game to one. The Mariners on the road
at Detroit, and then the nightcap, the Blue Jays will
be taking on the Yankees. The Yankees are down two

(01:17:52):
games to none, but they are back at home. Hopefully
they can figure it out. For Mark's sake, I want
to thank Mark, Henry, I want to thank Marcus, and
of course I want to thank you the people for
tuning in.

Speaker 3 (01:18:05):
Make sure you tune in tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (01:18:07):
As we will have Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
We are also efforting one of our former Texas Longhorns
to get their point of view of this matchup as
we head to the Texas Oklahoma State Fairs street fight
for that you want to call it the Red River Rivalry,

(01:18:33):
I did, I did it.

Speaker 3 (01:18:34):
It took some work from you guys.

Speaker 1 (01:18:36):
We'll be better tomorrow, I promise you that right here
on the morning kickoff, And just remember this, don't believe
everything you see, because even salt looks like sugar. Pace
