Morning Kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen one
hundred The Zone. We've got a big arch manning news
from the forty. We have Stark met with the media,
unspoke about being home. Joe Cook of Inside Texas joins
(00:59):
us at seventh thirty four. Mark Vandermere, the voice of
the Houston Texans, joins us at eight seventeen. We'll recap
the NFL and of course we had the Sports Equinox
last night that turned into a brand new day.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
If you're a Dodgers fan, I am your host.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Mike Harball Hart, my co host, is a WWE Hall
of Famer. He recognized as the world's strongest man. He
is Deep Mark Henry. Good morning Austin. And if you
want to be a oh and of course we got
our guy Marcus behind the boards. And if you want
to be a part of the show, all you got
to do is text the word texas followed by our
message to eight one five three zero. Standard data and
message rates may apply. That's the word texas followed by
(01:41):
your message to eight one five three zero. Standard data
and message rates may apply. Also, make sure you have
downloaded that always free and newly improved iHeartRadio app. We
have a talkback feature that is there, and if you
want to leave a message, all you got to do
is push that butt down. Leave your message up to
(02:02):
thirty seconds, because we ain't got that kind of time
to be listening to that, and we'll receive it instantly.
If it's good enough, you might even hear it on air.
But we also give you opportunities to win prizes, so
make sure you're locked in every single day. Well, we
were on the forty Acres yesterday. Yes we will talk
about the Dodgers and the way that they came back
(02:23):
and won that game. It was a game for the ages.
We'll talk about that in the next segment. We have
Joe Cook at seven thirty four, And yesterday was the
sports Equinox and what that means is every sport had
a game yesterday.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
So it was that one time where we've.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Had it where you're like, wait a minute, got enough TVs,
got enough channels, got enough.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
I know you if you watch you wrestling too.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Oh yeah, god forbid if you watch that too. So yeah,
forbid forbid it. But I wanted to get into the
conversation because yesterday coach Sark after that joyous victory, it
was nail bider, but they found a way to get
it done. They were back on the forty Acres, the
(03:10):
coach Shark and some of the players. There was a
lot of people recognized yesterday. Ethan Burt with his great game,
was recognized as defensive lineman. Colin Simmons continues to ascend,
and Anthony Hill Junior continues to do his thing. Ryan
Niblick got the cheese its big play of the week.
(03:33):
I mean there was a lot of recognition for this
Texas football team. But one of the things that continues
to be part of the conversation is getting the running
game going. And we'll hear from CJ. Baxter and just
a little bit as well, but Sark is really trying
to figure out how they can get the run game
(03:55):
going where it's not just your quarterback.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
And here's what he had to say. I think think
one of the keys is, you know, the run game.
It needs to be in Unison, and and we're we're
you know, I thought we blocked some runs really well
the other night, and we ran some runs really well
the other night, but consistently we aren't quite in Unison
that the way we need to be. There's run timing
(04:19):
that's involved, it's runner setting blocks, it's linemen and tight ends,
understanding angles of where the runs are going, where they
should hit, and so we need to spend more time
on that. You know, we need to be we need
to be diligent. And and again to your point, you know,
we need the run game. And again I thought the
run game was relatively effective, but then the game went
(04:40):
the way that it went and we had to kind
of divert away from that, and then we snuck some
runs late. You know, Trey had a couple of runs
later in the game when when we were when we
were throwing it. And but we got to be able
to run the football, and we need to be able
to play second and five, second and four football that
allows us to have the whole playbook at our disposal.
Second and ten, second and twelve is not where you
want to live. And same with being said, you know,
(05:02):
when we call some of our play action passes, it's
okay to check the ball down too, and you can
find you can find hidden yardage and checkdowns in the
passing game on first and ten. Because we just don't
want to be a run, run pass team. You know,
that's that's not advantageous either. We need to have the
we need to have the right type of balance. We
need to utilize all of our offense that way. And
(05:23):
so this week's going to be very important because we
need to be very efficient as an offensive football team
because the possessions are probably going to be limited. You
know that we're not going to go out there and
run eighty plays this week. We're probably going to be
somewhere between fifty and sixty five and so when you
think of it that way, that's about an eight maybe
ten possession game, and so you got to maximize your
possessions when you get them.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Yeah. Wow.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
And it's true because this team, the Vanderbilt team that
is coming in and we'll hear more about Vanderbilt tomorrow.
But you think about this Vanderbilt team when you watch
him and watch Pavia in the way that he moves
in the pot.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
He's their leading rusher and their leading passer.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
So they used the run game with him, and he's
a big old kid. So the possessions are going to
be limited because they're not a big strike type of team.
They like the ground and pound and get it down
to the gold line. So there's a lot that goes
to me him. Yeah, I mean, I mean sometimes it
(06:22):
just comes out that way. It's get it down to
the goal line bars there you go.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
That's that's the main thing right there.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
But the biggest question coming out not only was about
the running game, but it was about Arch Manning. They
came back after we saw the big hit that Arch
took where he ended up having to come out of
the game. But good part about it is while he
was over being in the medical tent. He stuck his
head out to see what was going on because he
(06:53):
wanted to make sure that that bad. Well, you know,
when you dinged up, you're gonna be able to be
a to think that you could go somewhere.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
You try to take a step and go.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
I got a buddy who thinks he's concussed right now.
But that's a story for another time. But and I'm
not talking about Arch. I'm talking about my buddy. So
you think about it. And coach Sark was asked about
Arch and did he practice yesterday?
Speaker 3 (07:19):
He did not.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
He's in protocol right now. We'll have more information as weekos.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
And that is he was asked again by our guy
onmar what does that look like?
Speaker 3 (07:30):
He said, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
We got to wait on the doctors and see what
the concussion protocol. The concussion protocol is out there if
you want to go look for But the main thing
that you need to understand is if he's not done
a full practice, not a full practice, but enough of
a time frame and to practice by Thursday, he is
deemed not being able to play well.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
They also have to pass the baseline. Yeah, yeah, so
there's a baseline test that you take. It's a cognitive
test and ask you a bunch of questions that you've
already answered these questions so they know where you are.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
If you can't answer those questions, then you can't pass. Yep.
So and Parker Livingstone.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Livingstone was talking, was asked a couple questions and he
said that they were watching football on Sunday, So he
may be further along than what we thought because most
of the time, if you have a concussion, you ain't
watching nothing right. You're here in dark, and you're in
the dark and you're not doing much of anything. But
it also means that, hey, this team is going to
have to go on with the backup quarterback. Matthew Calwell
(08:35):
is the guy, and we'll hear from him in our
number two. Hear from Sark on him in our number two.
So make sure you tune in at eight o'clock when
we talk about it. But also Sark was trying to
figure out now without his quarterback, but this has been
happening with him there.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
What can we do with these slow starts?
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Are we starting to get those slow starts figured out?
Speaker 3 (08:58):
You know, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (08:59):
I mean every year.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
You have issues, you know, I'm sure this time last
year I was talking about something else, you know, like
something we needed to clean up or get better at.
So every year you have things, and I think that's
our job as coaches to identify where your issues are
and then try to put a spotlight on them and
then try to improve upon them. I say it all
the time. We as coaches get what we emphasize. So
(09:23):
if we want to emphasize starting better in the game,
we have to look at maybe the game plan itself.
B what are we calling in that game plan to
put our guys in position to play a little little
faster where they can go get it and then see
on the players. You know, the players have to be
energized and engaged and ready to go. And I don't
think that we weren't ready to go the other night,
because clearly we started pretty fast, but then we hit
(09:45):
a lull in the second quarter, and so it's keeping
that flame lit and burning hot for four quarters. I
have a feeling we'll be ready to go Saturday at
eleven am. You know, we've we've been a very good
morning you know football team. We we've performed well at
eleven am, especially at home, and so we've got to
we've got to wake up early and get ourselves ready
(10:07):
to go. And we're gonna have to play from the beginning.
This is gonna be a fourth quarter game. That doesn't
mean you have to wait for the fourth quarter. We
need to play all four quarters with the right the
right sense of urgency if you will, you know, from
from the opening kick.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
And it's gonna be important for that.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
I mean, as we talked about, this is a team
in the Vanderbilt Commodores that Craig and I were talking
about it yesterday.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
On the right before the press conference.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
This isn't the Vanderbilt Commodores that our parents grew up on.
This isn't the one with Skip Bayless at the school
and Jay Cutler over there. This is a team that
Clark Lee has built into a threat.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
You know, this is a threatening team.
Speaker 6 (10:51):
You know.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
I like the coach too, Clark Lee. Yeah, He's like,
hey google me like I'm a winner. Yeah, like, you know,
same thing with the coach Indiana. Like those guys. They
want you to know that these are not the programs
they took over, right, and be ready for a war
every time you play us.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Well, Clark Lee went to Vanderbilt, so he was part
of them bad teams.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
So he's trying to change the culture.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
That is there and that's exactly what they're starting to do.
And he's went and got the right people to be
involved in it. So I'm not happy for them, but
I'm happy for them. I just don't want to be
happy this. Let's be happy for them next week, the
week after this game. So coming up next, we're gonna
continue to have some stories about major League Baseball.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
Who stayed up all night?
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Who knew Craig Waite did right here on the morning
kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
Coming up in the.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
Next segment, we've got our guy, Joe Cook of Inside Texas.
Joseph Cook eighty nine will be joining us at seven
thirty four. And forget about the fact that we will
have the voice of the Houston Texans, Mark Vandermere, will
be joining us at eight seventeen. We are the home
of the Houston Texans and of course the home for
(12:13):
the Texas Longhorns.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
And make sure you tune in this afternoon for the
Craig Way Show.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
He'll have a recap of the Texas women's basketball game
last night as they had another dominant performance as they
continue to roll and prepare for the regular season. It
was the last exhibition game was yesterday and they was
the victim Texas Women's College, Texas Women's University excuse me
(12:40):
up in Denton one eight to fifty four. Rory Harmon
had a double double thirteen points and twelve assists. And
that was after she was selected as the Nancy Lieberman
Award point Guard of the Year watch list. She was
put on that yesterday. So they were victim. Yeah, so
they went out there and did with their supposed to do.
(13:00):
They start the season next Monday against Lafayette. I believe
it is and no it's not Lafayette.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
I'm tripping. It's incarnate word. It's incarnate word.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
First game will be Monday night at seven o'clock tip.
You can watch it on SEC Network Plus. But of
course you can always hear that right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone. So exciting times. Basketball
season is right around the corner. Mark your calendars now.
Thursday at eight seventeen are Legends at the locker Room segment.
(13:35):
We will be joined by the one and only Christal
County Chrystal County will be joining us, who in the
legends of the locker room segment. Remember Texas hadn't been
home for forty two days, So we're gonna catch up
with CDC see how he's doing well. It feels to
be back home because I saw him in Mississippi State
(13:56):
in Darkville, and I want to know how his trip
was over there.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
But let's get into it.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
Last night was the longest Major League Baseball game in
World Series history, I believe, and it seemed like it
because people were sleep by the time this game ended,
and you know, you start to look at at all
of these things, and we talked about the sports Equinox
and how this thing finally ended was a walk off,
(14:23):
three run home run, a walk off home run in
Game three to U in the eighteenth inning to end
that game. But there's more to the story than just
that end of the game. Is how we got there
and we have big, big home run after big home run.
Speaker 7 (14:42):
Let's not the depac field.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
One turns what Game three? Turn it out? Th show? Hey, Otani,
we had Chipper Jones.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
You can go back and listen to that episode with
Chipper Jones on our podcast page. Chipper was talking about
what Otani is and when people start to marvel at
a player like Otani, and these are Hall of Fame players,
these are former MVPs, These are guys that understand the
(15:27):
game and you can't describe him. Last night was another
one of those reasons. You heard that home run right there,
but he wasn't finished. Another time, he decides, well, let
me speak to y'all so y'all can understand me.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
When you pitch late in the game, I don't care
who you are. Location, location, location is the most important
thing Otani.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Show Hal Tany ties the game five to five in
the seventh inning. But the best part about that is
John Smokes told you as a reliever late in the game,
you cannot miss over the middle.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
You have to be on your location.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
And you heard the Joe Davis saying center cut fastball.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
He's not missing that.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
You have to start avoiding show Hal Tani at all costs.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
And that's what they decided to do, is avoid him
for the rest of the game. Yeah, he ended up
with the game.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
I don't even know why they pitched to him in
the first place, Like I mean, I know they walked
him like five times.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
He was on base nine times last night. That's crazy.
Nine two games, Yes, that's two games, and still had
four hits in two home runs and scored three runs.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
He wouldn't have got that second. Let me tell you,
he would have had seven walks. Yeah, I would as
soon as he got in the battest box. Put the
bat down, good first.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
Don't even don't even bring a bad don't even put
on your shin guard.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
Why are you doing that? Just go ahead.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
It did get to that point last night when the
announcements is like, this is just circumstances.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
He's already knows he's walking in. He just walks right
there first.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
Yeah, because it's the situation that is out there, so
you start to understand. But a veteran of the postseason,
a man that has always been clutch, former Atlanta Bragg,
one of Chipper Jones' best friends, Freddie Freeman always seems
to answer the.
Speaker 8 (17:41):
Bell eleven fifty in Los Angeles con a.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
Five dollars ship field.
Speaker 8 (17:48):
Our show's going back.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
Concept. Go ahead.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Freddy Freeman is never gonna buy a beer in Los
Angeles again.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
He's never gonna have to buy anything. No boo.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
Come on in, mister Freeman. We have a table before
you right here in the front crustaceans. Come on, mister Freeman,
your table. It waits like that. Dude is gonna have
a green pass every high end towel name place.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
But I didn't make reservations. But you're good, sir. Just
come on in. We'll put you over here next to Magic. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Well you talked about it, Marcus when we came in
this morning.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
You're like, what is going to happen to the pitching staffs?
Speaker 1 (18:54):
Nineteen pitchers pitch yesterday, nineteen pictures come pitched yesterday.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
This this is a question you've been you probably experienced,
you know, like a double header.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
Let's just say that that was a double header last night.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
What do you do pitching wise now when you've exhausted
all your pictures, all your pictures, even the guys in
the bullpen.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
Well, when you pray that your starters can go a
little bit longer, because it's important, because both of these
guys on the law, because both of these pictures are
experienced enough. Now, the only question that I would have
as a Dodgers fan is how long do you extend show?
Speaker 3 (19:37):
Hal Tani?
Speaker 1 (19:38):
Because after that performance being up all night, they didn't
get done until what you heard it almost midnight, and
then you know they.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
They didn't go to bed right away.
Speaker 1 (19:49):
The adrenaline of everything going home and then trying to
come back. It's it's an interesting point that needs to
be made.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
I know this.
Speaker 1 (19:59):
A lot of times, and this was happened during our
time playing. If it got to extra innings or it
was starting to get a little bit late, you would
send tomorrow's starting pitcher to the hotel if you're on
the road, or you would send him home if you're
at home, say hey, go home, get some rest, be
ready to go for tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
But you're in the World Series.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
This is one of those situations where everybody's there, not
the starting pitching dunk Show Hay did Show Hay had
to stick around because he's the d h He stayed
in the game the whole time, and obviously he was
the star of the game with his performance that he had.
So this is where Johnny Hole's staff is gonna be
(20:46):
your most valuable player. But they may not go deep
into the ball game. So if Bieber cannot find the
strike zone, or they are up there just swinging to
be swinging, or they're making him work you're gonna get
to the book. And I think that's the biggest thing
for a lot of folks. Now, make these pitchers pitch
a little bit longer because the fatigue will set in.
(21:09):
So you try to extend them as long as you can.
Speaker 3 (21:13):
You can.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
But the Blue Jays are a team that jumps on
the first pitch. If you go back and look at
Kirk last night, I think in his four at bats,
first four at bats, he swung at the first pitch
almost every single time. So there are times where you
have to show some patience if you're going to try
to extend these guys and stretch them out in the ballgame.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
And that's another issue. Also. Springer, yep, Springer might be out. Yeah,
he's hurt. I mean he was hurt on the first
couple of swings. You could see it.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
He couldn't catch up to the fastball and his wrist
was killing him. So there's there's a cat and mouse
game that's being played right now. And I don't know
if Snyder is gonna blink or not with his team,
but I'll tell you what, it has definitely been a
lighting time. Eighteen innings, six hundred and nine pitches, six
(22:04):
hours thirty nine minutes, tied for the longest game in
world's history history.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
Yeah, you're gonna have to get some rest, boys. We
got a long day. No you take of height bad no.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Batting practice today. Just show and go. That's what they're
gonna do today, Just show and go. Coming up next,
we'll talk to our guy Joe Cook of Inside Texas
get his thoughts on what he heard yesterday, and of
course he's a baseball guy, gotta get his thoughts on
that right here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It's Tuesday, It's a turn
(22:38):
to page Tuesday. It's also a Texas Tuesday. And what
better way to talk to our guy Joe Cook of
Inside Texas. You can follow them at Joseph Cook eighty
nine on social and Joe a lot to discover and
talk about yesterday at the media availability. But first I
(22:59):
wanted to get at your thoughts on last night's epic
World Series matchup between the Dodgers and the Blue Jays.
Speaker 6 (23:07):
Man, it's uh, I have I have too much experience watching.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
An eighteen innings.
Speaker 9 (23:11):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (23:12):
It's whether you look at two thousand and five an
L D S or you look at a season game
twenty two and the I think it was also the
a LDS if I remember, Uh, you know twenty.
Speaker 5 (23:23):
Those are stressful.
Speaker 6 (23:24):
Those those are crazy, They're crazy on the fans, crazy
on starting pitchers out in the bullpen, and then all
it takes.
Speaker 5 (23:31):
Is one swing of the bat and a jersey putting stuff.
Speaker 8 (23:33):
You know that.
Speaker 6 (23:34):
I am glad that the postseason does not have so
and so season rules for x RA innings because we
would have been a silly regular something just you know,
historical like that, and Freddie Freeman gets adopted.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
Of Yeah, big time, big time performance from Freddy Freeman,
the Dodgers and what they were able to do. Uh,
let's get into coach Sark and what we've heard from him.
Speaker 3 (23:59):
I obviously, the.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
Big news out of yesterday's press conference is something that
we all kind of knew about was arch Manning being
in concussion protocol. It was confirmed yesterday and Coach Sark
said that he would be in protocol.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
So next up is Matthew called, Well.
Speaker 6 (24:19):
You know, protocol is not something you can go through quickly.
So yeah, I have to figure at this point that
this Saturday you're going to see number eight number eighteen.
Speaker 5 (24:28):
You know, you kind of and one of the.
Speaker 6 (24:30):
Things, whether it's from being in start Buel and hearing
some of the players talking under center all well or
just hearing Stark, is that there's a lot of faith
in this guy. You know it's about and I think
you know the fact that you see the Texas social
media caps that game winning touchdown battye Ice and you
see all the different players from all sign right after
he throws break with him, that that speaks to what
(24:52):
Sarkisian had mentioned yesterday.
Speaker 5 (24:53):
It's like, this is into the ball cellar.
Speaker 6 (24:55):
Isn't just a one year guy in the program just
kind of going through the motions.
Speaker 5 (24:58):
He's there to someone that part of things.
Speaker 6 (25:00):
And then you kind of go to the stuff on
the field. You know, I actually be a part of
the star pinch hitter. You know, this is the guy
that comes in and uh, you know when he kind
of said like this is you know, in the late innings,
gets the base hit, gets the big knocks that he
needs needs to. It happens when when this this star
pinch hitter is someone who's but you know what, a
(25:21):
dying breed, but still a star pinch hitter has to
be an everyday player. You know, uh, you know, see
him and have to put together a larger sample size.
What happens when you a top ten team and a
good defense like Vanderbilts, and you know, against one that
that goes and starts every snap.
Speaker 5 (25:38):
You know, it's gonna be a big challenge for him.
Speaker 6 (25:40):
He's got to be the step up from Jacksonville State
and Gardner Webb and it's a it is a Troy.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
It is a big bit different, and it's a bit
different than as a starter for the whole game the
entire week.
Speaker 6 (25:55):
So having to do it Fleet, you know, something we're
kind of used to with backup quarterbacks that.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
You t time.
Speaker 6 (26:02):
I think this is a guy that you know, start,
went and got during the club. But at the same
knowing there might be a good chance he has to
make some plays in areas of the off season over
the course of this season.
Speaker 2 (26:13):
Well he did that this weekend. The moment didn't get
too big say it again, joke all yours Mark, Okay,
so the moment didn't get too big for him when
he had to step in at the end of the
game for arch Uh. That's why coach Sark brought him in.
Do you think that this is one of those things,
(26:35):
now that he's had time to think about it, that
it will affect him somehow.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (26:43):
You know, it's one of those things where when you
go into these or just any game as the backup,
you prepare types of game. And I know that's kind
of cliche, but I do think at Texas with or
to Play emphasizes as a quarterback position in and how
aj Milly manages it, how smart sure that the backup
(27:04):
is prepared to play. And I also kind of think
that when if they do make sure you're preparing to play,
like they can say they expect to go in or
some of these backups they don't, you know, you expect
for Arch to be the guy taking every snaping like that.
But but I do kind of think that whenever you know,
as a backup, you're preparing to play. And so, Okay,
I know the you know I'm going to pass the test,
(27:25):
I'm going to take the test.
Speaker 5 (27:27):
I'm going to play. You're like, ok, and you do,
but you don't.
Speaker 6 (27:30):
Really the moment doesn't really like jump up on you
get the right answer on this is what I'm supposed
to do, this is what I've prepared for you don't
really have.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
It's like, oh yeah about everything.
Speaker 6 (27:40):
Now he's got time to think about everything, and then
I'm to think about it. And as a starter, you know,
he went to bed last night and knowing he took
first that is different practice and is preparing like he's
going to start. And I know it's still all depends
string reps and and concussion protocol. But I again, that's
that just doesn't feel like I'm art of and six
days so now he's gonna have time to think about it,
(28:03):
and something you get out of think.
Speaker 5 (28:04):
If anything, if there's.
Speaker 6 (28:06):
Someone who has time to think about it, you prefer,
you know, I see it's a guy who's got you know,
four or five years of college experience, has shown he
can play.
Speaker 5 (28:14):
If you're Steve Start plays on the road.
Speaker 6 (28:15):
Now he's coming home and gets the opportunity and make
the hometown support behind him instead of you know, sixty
thousand cow bells that you.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Also talked about him being at Garden Web and where
he was before. Obviously he would not come to Texas
if they didn't feel like this guy could come in
here and play if need be. Knowing that you had
needed a veteran type of quarterback to back up Arch.
Speaker 6 (28:44):
Manning like, yeah, yeah, that's the interesting thing.
Speaker 5 (28:48):
You know, it's like what quarterback to back up arch?
Speaker 6 (28:52):
And you know, being in a room that's got or
you're gonna find other guys and even more high caliber
guys joining it. Well, you're gonna find a guy who
had some high capitally from Auburn High School in Auburn, Alabama,
and you know he's lit that that's in Alabama. He
decided to come to Texas as there is at Troy
that's being seeing the culture at Texas and you know,
(29:14):
looking for a chance ault of you know, even if
he's not playing.
Speaker 5 (29:17):
A whole lot, the fart is something different.
Speaker 6 (29:19):
And at the FBS to you know U or excuse me,
at the power five level for his his senior year,
so level for the thing you know, you're not going
to be able to as much as you may try
keep it.
Speaker 5 (29:30):
It is a unique room is difficult. I think start
kind of touched on that yesterday.
Speaker 6 (29:34):
So if you can find the five stars in the
stow on the field and yet you know is able
to someone that you trust is the exact right phrasing,
but is able to maybe check an ego at the.
Speaker 5 (29:45):
Door, and I'm not sure if that.
Speaker 6 (29:46):
There's gonna be a lot more attention on the guy
ahead of me, And it made kind of curtail my playing.
Speaker 5 (29:51):
And you know, that's as good as you can ask
for enterging this year.
Speaker 6 (29:54):
And looks like Texas is about two times you know,
reaped the benefit of that good decision. Uh and they've
already done uh do with a win that win against
Psissippi State. You know that that directly led though, I
think with many of things to at least one win.
I think if you can use among a variety can
still get a win out of it. I mean, you're
(30:14):
you're whatever whatever you had calledwell this week, and whether
that's program wise or in IOI S or whatever it
may be, was was what to do in order to get.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
I think we lost Joe.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
Joe as always, man, we appreciate you breaking it down.
There's gonna be a lot more that's gonna be talked
about this week, especially with Matthew Caldwell. We'll be monitoring
the situation with one arch manning and if we're gonna
be able to get this running game going, this may
not be the week because that Vanderbilt defense is pretty.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
Solid right now.
Speaker 1 (30:49):
But as always, man, we appreciate you taking the time
with us this morning. Thank you, guys, appreciate it. There
is Joe Cook of Inside Texas. Yeah, it's gonna be
interesting because of the new quarterback situation.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
That we have.
Speaker 1 (31:05):
We'll talk about that more at the top of the
hour because we'll actually hear from coach Sharp talking about him.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
But yesterday was a special day in sports.
Speaker 1 (31:17):
We'll explain it to you right here on the morning
kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome
back to the morning kickoff right here on Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Coming up at the top
of the hour, we'll hear more from coach Sark as
he talked about the quarterback situation, and of course make
(31:40):
sure you tune in at eight seventeen as we'll have
the voice of the Houston Texans, Mark Vandermir joining us
to talk about the victory that the Houston Texans had.
I mean, it was quite impressive, to be quite honest
with you, but yesterday was a special day in sports.
And what do I mean by that is call all
(32:00):
those sports equinox and basically what that is is every
sport that you have out there is being played that day? Well,
what do you mean hard, Well, we had soccer, Yeah,
we had Major League Baseball, we had NHL, we had NFL, and.
Speaker 3 (32:23):
We had NBA.
Speaker 1 (32:24):
And so what we're going to do is we're going
to play some sound from each of those because it's
not a normal thing when you have a day like that.
I know a lot of folks get excited about it
because you're well, if you have add it's tough for
you because you're trying to lock in on what's going on.
(32:45):
But it's hard to stay locked in. So all these
sports had something that was going on. When you think
about the Commanders, there were eleven NBA games, there was
the Blue Jays and the Dodgers, there were two NHL games,
and there were two MLS soccer matchups. So Marcus, without
further ado, take number.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
One one saved by Salentano in this one.
Speaker 8 (33:09):
Just why I'm gonna be big player for them this year,
filling in for.
Speaker 6 (33:12):
The injured Mo Farsi who's been out for several months.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
Remember when Horrero was at Old Football at.
Speaker 10 (33:21):
So finally find that practice.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
And that was the MLS FC Cincinnati goal against the
Columbus Crew. They won that game, that match, excuse me,
one to nothing.
Speaker 3 (33:50):
But then you're red.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
Then you had NFL football and the Chiefs defeated the
Commanders thirty one to seven.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
And of course I mean check out tribs Kelsey Brishard
Smith in motion.
Speaker 7 (34:04):
There's Kelsey makes good on this one and a first
down Kansas City. Mahomes keeps has all day and he's
got Kelsey.
Speaker 3 (34:20):
Down inside. That's twenty five.
Speaker 9 (34:25):
The Holmes.
Speaker 8 (34:26):
Good catch by Kelsey.
Speaker 3 (34:28):
It really was.
Speaker 7 (34:28):
That's not an easy catch to make for a big
guy like him down low, and it's yielded positive results
up to this point.
Speaker 3 (34:38):
Mahomes has all day.
Speaker 8 (34:41):
Kelsey leaps out, He's got a ton of room in
front of him. Sam Rastell brings him down to save
the touchdown first and goal after a thirty eight yard completion. Well,
it's great coverage everywhere, and it's why the ball doesn't
come out of Mahomes's hands. They've got the deep ball
covered and then Kelsey, who is in helping protect, he
(35:03):
just realizes that his quarterback's in trouble. But this is
the eyes and the awareness of Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 3 (35:09):
Just knows where all his eligibles.
Speaker 7 (35:10):
Are at all times, and they play this ball possession
which he's receiving.
Speaker 8 (35:15):
Second and six, the homes end sound caught by Kelsey touchdown.
Speaker 1 (35:28):
That ties him with Priest Holmes as the most total
touchdowns in Chiefs franchise history with eighty three.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
That dude is amazing and is with all of the
complement of weapons back now Worthy being healthy, Regie Rice
being back and then active, you can't bracket him no more.
Speaker 3 (35:52):
You have to play him one on one.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
And I think that probably ninety percent of the time
he could beat every linebacker in the league, you know,
Like that's how dominant a wide receiver, running back, tight end,
h back.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
He's a multi tool player, yep. So like if you can't.
Speaker 2 (36:10):
Bracket him and put a linebacker in front of him
and a safety behind him, you're gonna you're gonna lose.
Like that, we I think they're gonna win the Super
Bowl again, Like if they stay healthy and they have
all these weapons and you cannot you cannot stop Kelsey
and you cannot stop Pichecko coming out of the backfield.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
That the Chiefs have just way too many weapons.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
And the final score was actually twenty eight to seven,
not thirty one to seven.
Speaker 3 (36:37):
Uh, and hockey they had We're gonna do that hockey.
Speaker 1 (36:41):
We're not gonna play the sound for the hockey though,
But there was a hockey goal, and there was a
big victory for Ottawa and Boston. But the play that
I want you to hear is something that's been going
on in San Antonio and win.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
Ben Yama is just an absolute freak.
Speaker 8 (37:03):
I mean, I'm all, ability is too good. We watch
us here, beautiful.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
Think about that.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
You saw, yeah, seven foot five doing things, dribbling the
ball up the court against the Raptors, going behind his back,
through his legs, getting an assist. And each game he
continues to get better. Let's not forget he had to
quit basketball last year. They had to set him down
(37:39):
because he had a blood clot in his shoulder and
he had to go in and get that cleaned up
and get that figured out. And now he's just he
looks like he's having so much fun. It is fun
when you're seven foot five and you can do whatever
you want and your team is undefeated.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
Hards.
Speaker 2 (37:56):
He led the league in blocks, and he played third
two less games than everybody. Yeah, and this year he's
the only player in the history of the NBA. Guys,
this is before the ABA merger with the NBA, he
scored one hundred points, had fifty rebounds and fifty and
(38:23):
I forgot how many blocks now, like twenty five blocks,
Like nobody's ever done it. All these great players that
we will Chamberlain, Kareem Shaq, Kobe, Michael Never Never, That's
that's what we're dealing with right now.
Speaker 3 (38:41):
Yeah, you're gonna see a lot of first time that
was with Winby. Yep.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
Yeah, he's he's the first player too since Shack in
nineteen ninety nine where he had one hundred points and
eighteen blocks in a three game span. They are four
now they're trying to go for five and all and
Winby if he's healthy. With Cassell, Harrison Barnes and Devin
(39:08):
Visell As I said, the Spurs, they're gonna be fun
to watch. Our number one is in the books. Our
number two is just around the corner. Don't forget. We
got Mark Vandermiller of the Voice of the Houston Texans
coming up at eight seventeen. But we'll hear from coach
Sark right around the corner on the morning Kickoff on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Welcome back to
(39:31):
our number two of the Morning Kickoff right here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. A turn the
page Tuesday edition of the Morning Kickoff. We got a
chance to hear from coach Sark because he made the
announcement that one Arch Manning did not get a chance
to practice because he's in the protocol and he will
know more as the week goes on. We also talked
(39:53):
about that epic six hour matchup of the Ages with
the Dodgers winning and walk fashion Freddie Freeman walks it off,
but show hey o Tani still continues to be the story.
We also heard from Joe Cook of Inside Texas and
we talked about the sports equinox that happened yesterday as
(40:14):
the NFL, MLB, NBA, MLS, and NHL all had games
on one day. Well, right now, I want to continue
the conversation about the quarterback situation. Obviously, with Arch Manning
being out so far this week, not out of the
(40:34):
game yet, I'm not putting that out there. Being out
of practice, it was an opportunity for Matthew Calwell, the
young quarterball, the older quarterback that has come in to
be the backup. He's gotten some reps in earlier games.
He's made some big time throws. Obviously the big throw,
none bigger than the throw against Mississippi State. But of
(40:57):
course he got to play some games earlier. We have
to see his wills, we got to see the way
he handled things. But yesterday was the first day that
he had as the one as the starting quarterback, and
coach Sart talked about the confidence that he has in
this young man.
Speaker 4 (41:14):
The good thing for Matt, he's a very even keeled guy.
I thought he had a great practice today. I think,
you know, the players have a lot of confidence in him.
I think it's his maturity, his approach. You know, he's
very engaged even when he doesn't play. If you ever
watched our sidelines in game eighteen, is probably the most
engaged player on that sidelines. He's always picking guys up offense, defense,
(41:38):
special teams, you know, and so he's got a really
good relationship with the guys, and so I don't think
it's like, well, who's this guy. You know, he's in
a lot of faces a lot of the times, and
so it felt very comfortable. I felt very normal today.
I thought the bigger thing for today was that kJ
Lacey got reps with the twos, and I thought that
was that was really good for him. You know, he's
a very talented player who's been growing and getting better,
(41:59):
so it was fun for us to see him get
more reps today.
Speaker 1 (42:02):
That's an interesting move right there, because that means that
Trey Owens is not at the top of the depth chart,
and that means that kJ Lacy has kind of moved
into that number three row where Matthew Caldwell obviously was
the number two.
Speaker 3 (42:22):
Now it's one and two in that position.
Speaker 1 (42:25):
I have no idea, and I haven't even asked that
question because there there has been a couple of times
that I wanted to know what's going on with Trey Owens.
Speaker 2 (42:34):
But because last year he looked so good yep, yep,
and I thought that he would be a great second
quarterback in case something ever happened.
Speaker 3 (42:44):
And now we're not hearing about him at all.
Speaker 1 (42:46):
Right, Yeah, so it's uh, it's an interesting but this
is the way that coach Shark decided he wanted to
roll with this and maybe it's something like that, maybe
that he wasn't progressing the way that they were hoping
that he would. Bassart was asked if he went out
and looked at other quarterbacks before something that he saw
(43:07):
in Matthew Carwell made him become that guy.
Speaker 4 (43:11):
I think with the thing, you know, we looked at
a few guys. You know, everybody was looking everywhere. I mean,
everybody's trying to figure out who's your backup whatnot. And
it's hard to, I think, in this day and age
to keep multiple really you know, high level, five star
type quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (43:24):
So you got to look around.
Speaker 4 (43:26):
I think no more is more telling than what old
miss you know, figured out with their guy. And so,
you know, it was just felt like the right fit
honestly with matt you know, for.
Speaker 3 (43:36):
Us passing game wise, that was what was needed in
the moment, you know, and we've.
Speaker 4 (43:45):
We challenged, oddly enough, we challenged the receivers and the
quarterbacks Friday night about the way we needed to play
the game. And I played a fair amount of older clips,
some from here of other players, some from the last
place I was at with some of those players, and
some from the current guys on this team, of similar
plays we wanted to run and how they needed to
(44:07):
be ran and that was the expectation, right, that's why
they were brought here. And to those guys credit, they
really responded. And they didn't play perfect. You know, there's
there's plays that they'd love to have back, but man,
they competed and they played fast. And we're at our
best when we play fast on the perimeter. Uh and
then when the quarterback trust that play speed that they're
(44:28):
playing with. And I thought Art showed a lot of
trust in those guys Saturday and and their play speed
and their play making showed up. You know, Like I said,
there was a couple of those those first those two
touchdown catches by Parker and Emmett. I mean, those are
elite catches. Those are about as high level catches as
you can make in the red area tight quarters. Any
(44:50):
bobble in either one of those is not a touchdown.
And so the ability to make those strong catches were big,
and that just builds confidence and that builds trust for
the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
He talked about this yesterday, and you talk about playing
fast and being fast. Calwell, you said is probably one
of the fastest guys on the team, not just at quarterback,
but he's a fast guy like can you explain to me,
like I looked at what he did before he came here,
(45:22):
and yeah, he played against people that were less talented
than him, but he made them look like they were
not on the same field with him, Like playing against
people that.
Speaker 3 (45:35):
Are his equal.
Speaker 2 (45:36):
Now, I think it's gonna benefit him because now he's
gonna be playing He's never played with anybody like Wingo or.
Speaker 3 (45:45):
Moseley or Livingston.
Speaker 2 (45:48):
He's never played with guys like that Baxter Yea and Wisner.
So this is gonna be beneficial to him. Explained to
everybody else like you explained to me yesterday.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
His physical capability, Well, I think he's he's a special
talent and it wasn't that he didn't earn the right
to be somewhere else. I mean, look at like Coach
Shark said, look at the young man from from Old Miss.
He was playing D two bake football. He was playing
D two football last year and now he's leading Ole
(46:20):
Miss into it. It's more about the opportunities that you
get to play to showcase your talent. If you watch
the ball come out of his hand, you can see
that he's a special thrower of the football. And Coach
Shark is a guy that likes to look at the
way the ball comes out of people's hands. And you know,
I went back and watched some of the film yesterday too.
(46:41):
He was fast, but he ain't the fastest. Now I
had to go back and look at it was he
I no, I wasn't telling he going to avoid some people,
but he ain't taking it to the house.
Speaker 3 (46:51):
There was a couple of times that I'm like, man,
ain't nobody should be looking? Did you just get caught
up in a moment?
Speaker 1 (46:56):
I was excited about what I said. He was, hey,
but he's quick, and he's fast, but he ain't quickly fast.
But yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, he's going Let's put
it like this. And I told you this yesterday. I said,
I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised when
they get a chance to watch him play a full game.
(47:20):
I'm not saying he's gonna go out there like everybody
thought Arch Manning was last year when he got the
chances to play. But his ability to evolve in that pocket,
the experience that he has and the ability to let
that ball go out of his hand is something that
I am excited to see.
Speaker 3 (47:41):
I'm excited to see him throw the football.
Speaker 1 (47:44):
Another guy that I'm excited to see at some point
and hopefully he doesn't have to play a lot.
Speaker 3 (47:49):
Is kJ Lacey.
Speaker 1 (47:50):
kJ Lacey, Alabama's player of the Year, broke all the
records in the state of Alabama. He's earned the spot
to be at QB two and start talked about what
he's been able to do so far.
Speaker 3 (48:03):
Yeah, he's done a great job. You know, I think
one thing with kJ.
Speaker 4 (48:08):
Every time we've been in scrimmage settings and things of
that nature, call it periods on Mondays, we do a
lot of work when it's twos on twos, threes on threes,
and we let these guys play. He really performs at
a high level. He's he's a gamer. He's got a
natural feel for passing the ball. He's got a natural
feel in the pocket and anticipating throws.
Speaker 3 (48:29):
He uses his legs really well.
Speaker 4 (48:32):
And so to that point, it was like, man, I
can feel like man, as more of this guy grows
within our system, he's going to really elevate his game
as he continues to go. And that's what he's done.
You know, he's continued to improve. I do think he's
got good rapport especially with those younger receivers. Those are
the guys he throws to a lot, but there's there's
great rapport that he has with those guys, and the
ball moves forward when he plays, and he's a he's
(48:54):
a lot more vocal guy in those moments on the
field than he is off the field, and so I
know what's in there and so very encouraged by what
he's done up until this point.
Speaker 1 (49:05):
And that is huge when you think about next man
up mentality and Coach Stark talking about how he's performed
when he's gotten his opportunities in the scrimmages. We heard
about him when at the beginning of the season what
he was able to do with his feet, let alone
with his arm. He was the number four pro style
(49:27):
quarterback when he came out in his class by rivals.
He was a four star prospect. He was named Mister Alabama,
Mister Football in Alabama his senior year, finished his career
thirty nine and three as a three year starter. So
this is a kid that understands his abilities and tries
(49:47):
to stay within them. So Texas is going to be
okay in that position. But it doesn't really matter how
great their accolades are and what they do if up front,
but they're not having the time to do those things.
Kind of like what we saw from Arch. We saw
Arch grow each week each week. Well, Matthew Calwell has
(50:09):
the possibility of starting against the number of nine ranked
team in the nation. But the difference is he's not
on the road. He's at home, so he's gonna have
the home crowd on his side, and it kind of
changes the approach. Now he's getting those ones, he's getting
those one takes.
Speaker 2 (50:25):
I'm happy for him, man, just to be able to
have that on his resume, and when it's time for
him to go to NFL training camps and stuff like
that to get a look, he'll.
Speaker 3 (50:35):
Have some good foot it, no doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (50:37):
Coming up next, we'll talk to somebody from the NFL.
Our guy Mark Vandermier, the voice of the Houston Texans,
joins us next right here on the morning kickoff on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 3 (50:49):
This's all.
Speaker 1 (50:51):
It's a Tuesday, It's a Texas Tuesday, but it's also
a Texan Tuesday. And especially when we get a chance
to go to h Town and talk to our guy,
Mark VanderMeer, the voice of the Houston Texans, which you
can hear right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone, and.
Speaker 3 (51:10):
Mark last week.
Speaker 1 (51:11):
Heading into this matchup, we wanted to see if the
Houston Texans could come out and punch somebody in the face.
Not only did they do that on the defensive side
of the ball, controlling that running attack of the San
Francisco forty nine ers, but they also did it on
the offensive line, given CJ. Stroud time to pick apart
(51:32):
that defense. What was your thoughts on that evaluation that
I gave.
Speaker 9 (51:38):
Yeah, I think that's it. You know, they dominated time
of possession. The opening drive was nine and a half minutes,
sixteen plays. Now they didn't get a touchdown, they get
a field goal, but it's set the tone that they
could control things at the line of scrimmage enough to
keep the forty nine ers off the field, and when
they did take the field it was three and a
half three and out. The defense did a great job
(52:00):
the last minute of the first half, which was really
on the special teams, allowing a big return and a penalty,
and then they had it in scoring range. So I
thought both sides of the ball played really well on
Sunday and CJ. Strout in particular, you give them time
to throw, and especially without Nico Collins Christian Kirk, the
design of the plays I thought was better. I thought
(52:22):
he played better. They put it all together against a
good team. Finally, and maybe this is the one that
can really get them going for twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (52:31):
Mark.
Speaker 2 (52:32):
I thought that you and I touched on it last
week and we talked about the running backs, and luckily enough,
Chubb got more inside the tackle carries and they actually
used marks the way that he should be used, by
hitting outside, running outside zone running plays like they I
(52:52):
think coaching wise, they did a better job of where
to use the running backs.
Speaker 9 (52:58):
Yeah, I agree with that. I think offensively when they
designed stuff. Nick Kelly, first year coordinator. You know, look,
we could argue maybe you're better off with a more
experienced guy whatever, especially in the early going. But let's
just say Kelly turns out to be really good. You're
never gonna be as good in your third, fourth, fifth,
sixth game as you will be in game thirty seven.
(53:20):
In game fifty two, he's starting out, and I think
he figured some things out between Monday night and Sunday. Now,
I know it's a different scheme in a way, the
Seahawks were stunting more. I don't know why the Niners didn't,
but they took care of business up front, no question.
No sacks allowed in the game for the Texans. That
was definitely notable. And then CJ throwing over three hundred
(53:42):
yards for the first time in his last twenty one games.
I mean, he was lighting it up, he was dialed in.
It was a beautiful thing to see. So complete victory
to go to three and four.
Speaker 1 (53:53):
Yeah, that's important that they get a chance to go
to three and four. One of the things that Mac
Jones said after the game, who was the best defense?
And they said the Houston Texans, and the Houston Texans showed.
Speaker 3 (54:04):
That all levels.
Speaker 1 (54:06):
Will Anderson his stats across the board were pretty consistent,
but he was getting to the quarterback again, him applying
pressure and that also helps the back end.
Speaker 9 (54:18):
Yeah, and I think that getting to McCaffrey was huge. Now,
earlier a few games ago, they stopped Dereck Henry cold
at Baltimore, and now they stopped Christian McCaffrey and hold
him to his worst game. And I thought that that
was really good for the defense to swarm on him
in the backfield and when they covered him when he
went out, they had him and Jones had to rush
(54:41):
his throws. They made sure nobody else could really hurt
him or hurt them, And I just thought they handled
things brilliantly defensively. McCaffrey is an all world player. He's
much more dangerous as a receiver than a running back,
even though he had over one hundred yards against the
Falcons the week before, holding him down to the run
game and then also in the passing game, Yeah, I
(55:02):
thought that was absolutely terrific for this defense. Number one
in the league in points per game and yards per game.
Speaker 3 (55:09):
That is strong.
Speaker 9 (55:10):
No Texans defense has ever had that mark this late
in the season, and Demico's last year in San Francisco,
that's what he had, the number one defense in both
those categories. He's got it. Now, let's see what they could.
Speaker 3 (55:21):
Do with it, Mark.
Speaker 2 (55:22):
What did they do different as far as the way
that they attacked keeping McCaffrey at bay, I didn't see
anything that was blatantly obvious other than maybe effort. But
was there something that they employed that was different than
what they did in weeks prior.
Speaker 9 (55:42):
You know, I just think that the interior guys were
able to get some backfield penetration, so they.
Speaker 5 (55:48):
Were able to make him move.
Speaker 9 (55:49):
They talked about, you know, you can get Derrick Henry's
steet and then as long as he doesn't get started,
the rest of the guys, the rest of your friends
come over and help. With McCaffrey, it's a little bit different.
You got to make them readdirect maybe twice, and they
were able to do that, and it was just a
swarming effect. And you guys, know, it's human nature. Some
weeks a defense will be flying around making plays. Other weeks,
(56:11):
how's the offense moving the ball on them? But they've
been barely consistent. They haven't been hurt by the run
too many times this season, and again against those two
great running backs McCaffrey and Henry, they shut him down.
So they got to do it again this weekend.
Speaker 3 (56:25):
Because it's JK.
Speaker 9 (56:26):
Dobbins and RJ. Harvey and the Broncos are really tough.
Speaker 1 (56:29):
We're talking to the voice of the Houston Texans where
you can hear his voice every Houston Texans game right
here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 3 (56:39):
Mark vandermir and Mark.
Speaker 1 (56:41):
You know, you just mentioned that the Denver Broncos had
their way with the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday. They
were able to move the ball. Bo Nicks is one
of the best quarterbacks in the NFL since his time
of being drafted. I think I saw that he has
like fifty two touchdowns since he's been in the NFL.
(57:01):
But their defense might be without the top defensive player
in the game. Patrick certain what is up with the
Houston Texans and their wide receiver corps going up against
this Broncos defense.
Speaker 9 (57:14):
Well, I would love to see Nico Collins come back
at the very least. I think they can live without
Kurt a little bit better because of the emergence of
Jail and Noll, who had a really nice game against
the San Francisco forty nine ers. So if they can
get Nico back, that's going to be huge. But I
think maybe the story of the game is the receiver
stepping up and the fact that CJ found so many
(57:36):
different receivers. You had Brexton Barrios catching five passes, yet
Higgins looking really strong with the touchdown. You had Noel
with five catches. I mean, they were all over the place.
Xavier Hutchinson five catches, the cyclone stepped up big, and
then Jared Wayne. They elevated him for the practice squad.
He has two. They were all over the field with
these receptions, and I think that keeps everybody involved. And
(57:59):
that's what you're gonna have to do against Denver short surgical,
quick game in the passing attack, and try to find
a way to run the ball against that Denver d
It's gonna be very tough. Vance Joseph he was a
Texans assistant a long time ago. It's kind of weird
that he was once head coach of the Broncos and
now he's the coordinator. But it's all working out for
them right now, and they got to fight a way
to get the bow Nicks.
Speaker 5 (58:17):
I mean you mentioned him.
Speaker 9 (58:18):
He's older than c J.
Speaker 3 (58:20):
Stroud.
Speaker 9 (58:20):
It's like a year and three quarters older than c. J.
Speaker 3 (58:22):
Stroud.
Speaker 9 (58:23):
He's played a gargantuan amount of college football.
Speaker 3 (58:26):
We all know that.
Speaker 9 (58:27):
So when he comes into the league, he's played in
huge games at two different schools when you look at
Auburn and Oregon, and I think that it really helped
him adjust. And now he's got a great coach and
Sean Payton.
Speaker 3 (58:37):
So this is gonna be tough.
Speaker 2 (58:38):
Mark, one of my favorite players, didn't come from Texas.
He came from Baylor and he plays for Houston named Petree.
Like he went off the field, like is he back
on the field? Was because he looked like he got
hurt or something.
Speaker 9 (58:54):
Yeah, I think he's okay. I didn't hear anything negative
about him. Injury report comes out tomorrow. Curious about him,
Curious about Dalton Schultz, Braxton, Burios, these guys because it's
all hands on deck right now and you got to
go on a run. You have ten games left. You
got to find a way to win. I don't know
seven eight of them. I mean, this is going to
be really tough, guys, because you put yourself in a
(59:15):
hole early. But it's nice to see them playing better.
But I love Petrie too. You know. Petrie was our
Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee. He makes plays
all over the place. He's just a football player. Yeah,
coaches say that it sounds kind of cliche. What position
does he play?
Speaker 3 (59:31):
Defense? That's it.
Speaker 9 (59:32):
That's all you got to say. He gets after it
and it's fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (59:36):
I do want to ask you this because the AFC
South is a little bit different than what we expected
coming into the year. The Indianapolis Colts are at the top.
Speaker 3 (59:44):
At seven and one.
Speaker 1 (59:46):
Jacksonville is still lurking with the Texans right behind him.
What is it that's going on with the Indianapolis Coats
besides the obvious?
Speaker 9 (59:55):
Well, I think it's horrible. We have to do something
about this. I don't like them and this is awful
to see. Okay, Jonathan Taylor is looking like for Daniel Jones.
This is his Sakuon Barkley, right, this is the guy
who's making Daniel Jones so much better. And I don't
want to take much away from Daniel Jones here, because
he's got a good coach and psych in. The chemistry
(01:00:16):
is all there. And we always knew that a pretty
good roster, no doubt. It wasn't like they were going,
you know, three and fourteen the last couple of years.
I mean they were nine and eight two years ago.
They could have had a winning record last year with
a bounce here, bounce there. I mean, they are a
good roster. He's a good coach and this is really
a terrible development for the Houston Texans. And the AFC
(01:00:38):
South and something must be done. So believe me, guys,
when we get to Colts Week, you're gonna get a
different me. No team makes my blood boil like the horseshoe,
and I can't stand watching this right now, but I
gotta sit down and take it. And the Texans got
to get their act together so they can take their
shot in a few weeks.
Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
Well, Texans have a big matchup this week. They can't
look ahead. They gotta be focused on the Denver Broncos
because they come in after putting forty four up on
the Cowboys. You can hear all the action right here
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone with the
voice of the Houston Texans, our friend Mark vandermir.
Speaker 9 (01:01:14):
Thanks Mark, Hi, thanks a lot, guys.
Speaker 3 (01:01:17):
Appreciate it. There.
Speaker 1 (01:01:18):
He is bringing the energy and the Texans are minus
one and a half point favorite.
Speaker 3 (01:01:24):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (01:01:25):
By the way, guys, the over under in last week's
game for the Texans was forty one and a half.
It finished at forty one. Vegas, keep building buildings. When
we come back, We'll get the world's strongest man as
he brings you his world's strongest take right here on
the morning kickoff on Sports Radio A thirteen hundred The Zone.
(01:01:48):
Great stuff by the voice of the Houston Texans, Mark
vandermir You can always hear him here an hour before
the kickoff and of course for the entire game.
Speaker 3 (01:01:55):
But right now, you know what time it is.
Speaker 1 (01:01:57):
It's time for the World's strongest man, Mark Henry to
bring you his world's Strongest take.
Speaker 3 (01:02:03):
Take it away, big fellow heart. You know what time
it is. If time for.
Speaker 2 (01:02:08):
The world's strongest take by the world's strongest man. My
guess back then they didn't know me, But now I'm hot,
They're all on me. Well, guys, another installment of the
World's Strongest Take.
Speaker 3 (01:02:28):
And you know, I try my best.
Speaker 2 (01:02:30):
Not to stay regional, and I reach out and I
go for problems. I go for things that puzzle me,
that make me just go kindly.
Speaker 3 (01:02:41):
Why is that?
Speaker 2 (01:02:43):
Well, it's the Philadelphia seventy six ers today. And I
know I've been very critical of the office, the front
office of the Philadelphia seventy six ers because I think
that they grab that best straws and they missed most
(01:03:03):
of the time. Well it's no different than right now.
They have over fifty of their salary tied up in
two guys, one the center Jolanbid and small forward Paul George.
(01:03:23):
H Paul George still has not played in the first
three games of the season. Jolan Bed played in the
first game, had nine points, but because he could not
stay on the floor because they drafted Philadelphia drafted really well.
(01:03:44):
When I say they drafted really well, they drafted the
rookie out of Baylor, Edgecombe and.
Speaker 3 (01:03:53):
Edgecombe guys.
Speaker 2 (01:03:54):
All he did was in the first game of the season,
he went for an unbelievable thirty six points.
Speaker 3 (01:04:06):
And he's playing.
Speaker 2 (01:04:08):
With Tyrese Maxi, who is one of the fastest players
in the NBA. And with that being said, Jolan Bid
can't stay on the floor and run.
Speaker 3 (01:04:20):
With those guys, and that's so much money.
Speaker 2 (01:04:24):
And Paul George when he does come back, if he's
able to come back, he's an older player. He's not
going to be able to run up and down with
those young guys. My take is and Hard is always
like Mark, always trying to trade everybody, always trying to
get They need assets for youth. They need to trade
(01:04:50):
away Paul George and Jolanbiid to teams that are struggling
for a veteran leader and a bigger player, for assets
for young sinners and forwards that can run and jump
like the win draft picks, and then they can unload
(01:05:11):
all that money too in the process. It will help
them this year. I think they are who they're gonna be.
But just look at this Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxi both
have scored forty points in consecutive games. One scored forty
(01:05:35):
points yesterday and the other one scored thirty two yesterday.
Is Comb scored twenty six. Tyrese Maxi had forty three.
Joelanbiid zero minutes, one hundred million dollar deal, Paul George
zero minutes, one hundred.
Speaker 3 (01:05:55):
Million dollar deal.
Speaker 2 (01:05:59):
I think that the it's okay in this case too,
as Mark here would say, ship him out of there?
Speaker 3 (01:06:07):
What say you? Did he just use the third person?
Did you? Yeah? That dude is awesome, that Mark he gain.
I'm like, did he just use the third person?
Speaker 1 (01:06:23):
Look, Joe l Embiid, he's not part of your team anyway,
so yeah, you're I will give you the pass on
this one.
Speaker 3 (01:06:32):
The second hit him out of there.
Speaker 1 (01:06:34):
Uh, he's so injury prone that it doesn't look as
if he wants to be a part of trust the
process because the process has he's failed the process because
he hasn't been healthy enough ordeal to be a part
of what they're trying to do.
Speaker 3 (01:06:55):
You're right, they want to run there.
Speaker 1 (01:06:57):
They're a team that wants to be up and down
the floor because they're athletic enough to do so. Tyrese
Maxi is one of the fastest dudes in the NBA
with the ball in his hand.
Speaker 3 (01:07:06):
And he's got to slow down there.
Speaker 1 (01:07:08):
And you got a big You got another guy on
the wing in Edgecumbe who comes from nothing like this.
Dude understands that ball is life for real, and he
is doing everything he possibly can to set the world
on fire when it comes to his playing ability.
Speaker 3 (01:07:26):
So I'm with you.
Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
I mean, at this point, it's Joel Embiid even part
of the basketball team. There's no reason for load management
at the beginning of the year.
Speaker 3 (01:07:35):
There is.
Speaker 1 (01:07:36):
You pick your moments, but it shouldn't be at the
very beginning of the season. You find different pockets of
games that you can miss where your team is ready
to go. But yeah, I'm not a I've lost a
lot of respect for Joel Embiid.
Speaker 3 (01:07:53):
So what do you do.
Speaker 2 (01:07:54):
You go to a team that needs a center and
you say, look, we want assets, we want draft picks,
and we need at least one center.
Speaker 3 (01:08:05):
Forward guys that can run.
Speaker 2 (01:08:08):
And you just have to look at those teams and
make sure that they're not cap strapped.
Speaker 3 (01:08:15):
Orlando wanted to do a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:08:17):
They've done a lot with their roster and they they've
they spent money. Atlanta, they need a big guy. They
got assets. They got young players that they drafted in
the last two years. Like I'm not a general manager
in the league, but I understand building and Philadelphia this
(01:08:39):
is where the tire MEAs to road.
Speaker 3 (01:08:41):
They got there too.
Speaker 2 (01:08:42):
They got two like thoroughbred guys, and those two third
bread guys.
Speaker 3 (01:08:47):
Don't fit everybody else on that team.
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
Kelly, Obray, uh And and Grimes are really good guys.
Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
And I didn't even know.
Speaker 2 (01:08:57):
Now all the Houston fans will know this name when
I say Gordon. Gordon that used to play for the
for the Rockets and Denver and the Clippers.
Speaker 3 (01:09:08):
He is a Michael Waves scorer. Put him on the floor.
He can shoot it.
Speaker 2 (01:09:12):
And with these new rules, the high five rules is banished.
Now you have an issue. You have guys that can score.
So yeah, I'm with you with.
Speaker 1 (01:09:29):
Getting rid of him, But I'm also like, Gordon is
not somebody that I'm gonna wait on. I mean, he's
gonna sit on that bench for a while because he's
a liability.
Speaker 3 (01:09:40):
He don't play no defense.
Speaker 1 (01:09:43):
These these young ThunderCats that you have right now, you
let them go.
Speaker 3 (01:09:48):
And the words of Mark Henry my mask said get
him out of that. Yeah, yeah, And the words of
Mark Henry the third person.
Speaker 1 (01:10:00):
We'll come back and close out the show and send
you to Dan Patrick.
Speaker 3 (01:10:04):
We've got college.
Speaker 1 (01:10:05):
Football tonight and it's right down the street the same
mop Hey, now here we go, right here on the
morning kickoff on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
What a great show we had today on the morning
kickoff right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone,
it's a turn to page Tuesday. We got a chance
(01:10:28):
to talk to our guy, Joe Cook of Inside Texas As.
He talked about the news starting quarterback, possibly possibly Matthew Calwell,
that we have all seen handle business so far since
he's been there. He also talked about the expectations of
the week as Texas is trying to find a way
(01:10:50):
to get it done as only Texas can, but hopefully
before the fourth quarter so they can stay out of
that as well. We also got some awards that were
given out this week to the Texas football team. Also,
this Saturday, we are back at b VO Boulevard for
the first time in forty two days. We will be
(01:11:10):
at Bevo Boulevard starting at eight am, myself, Mark Henry,
and of course Cam Parker as we lead you up
to an eleven am kickoff from bv VOE Boulevard. Also
shout out to Anthony Hill and Ethan Burke Anthony Hill
(01:11:30):
Junior and Ethan Burke. Anthony Hill Junior was named co
Defensive Player of the Week and edge rusher Ethan Burke
was named cole Sec Defensive Lineman of the Week. As
they continue to do what they do when it's time
to do what they do. The Texas defense is third
(01:11:52):
in the FBS and rushing yards giving up per game
at eighty point five, fourth in team sacks. They have
three point five their fourth and third down convert version,
fourth in fourth down convert versions, fifth in kickoff return.
This defense is one of the best in the country
and they continue to make noise. I'm excited about this week.
(01:12:15):
There's so much going on. Obviously, Texas will be back
and that's the story. But tonight you get a chance
to go down to San Marcus. That's right, folks, Sam
Marcus As they will be hosting a Tuesday night game tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:12:31):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (01:12:32):
We got a game tonight that we are I'm excited
to kind of watch because Texas State is a team
that a lot of folks are still trying to figure out.
They're sitting at three and four in the Sunbelt. They
got a bunch of games they gotta win if they're
gonna go to a bowl game. I mean, they're going
three and four in the season, but oh and three
in the Sunbelt. They're taking on James Madison, who is
(01:12:53):
six and one and four and oh in the Sunbelt.
That game kicks off at seven o'clock tonight. From win,
they need a huge, huge win number one because James
Madison is one of the better teams in them obviously
in their division. But they need this for momentum, right
so they can get Bowl eligible. They've been talking about
(01:13:15):
Bowl eligible, bowl eligible, new program. This is we're building
all these things in Sam Old take it over Texas,
take Texas back, and now they get a chance to
do that.
Speaker 3 (01:13:25):
They got to be able to take Texas back right now.
Speaker 2 (01:13:27):
You got to be a team that's highly ranked to
give you style points, no doubt, because if you you
can have a losing record, but if you close out
your season three or four games with wins, and two
of those wins over teams that are ranked one and three,
one and two, like man, you're.
Speaker 3 (01:13:45):
Back in it.
Speaker 1 (01:13:46):
Yeah, they need it because they need this. They need
three more wins to get into Bowl eligibility. Also, tonight,
UTEP versus Kenansas State. That game kicks off at seven o'clock.
That will be on ESPN you as I said, Texas State,
James Madison in Texas State. That kicks off at seven
o'clock on ESPN two. We also have Major League Baseball
(01:14:10):
tonight show, Hey O'tani will be, Show, Hey Otani will
be We'll be taking the mound after his excellent performance
last night. The Dodgers lead the series over the Toronto
Blue Jays two games to one. That first pitch will
(01:14:31):
be at seven o'clock. You can watch that one on
Fox eighteen Innings Yesterday Long Game two games doubleheader. They
this will be their third game in less than twelve hours,
so that'll be big for both of these pitching staffs.
Nineteen pictures. Yeah, nineteen pitchers were used in a matchup. Yeah,
(01:14:54):
we played seventeen innings. I did that twice. I had
one of those games though, where you start the game off,
you hit a double off the wall. Next time up
you get a walk. Third time up you get a
base hit, four, fifth, sixth, seventh time up you strike out,
and then your day goes from I'm having a great
day to a man, I hate baseball. So yeah, I've
(01:15:18):
had those days before, so it's part of the struggle
for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:15:23):
That's why I said.
Speaker 1 (01:15:24):
Some of these guys that were looking at their averages,
They're like, man, this is terrible for most of the people.
I also want to give a shout out to a
local product.
Speaker 3 (01:15:36):
His name is Josh E. Lander.
Speaker 1 (01:15:39):
Former Round Rock Dragon, played catcher, went to TCU, ended
up getting drafted by the Chicago Cubs, played in their organization,
got back into college baseball as a coach. He was
just now named the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers
after Tony Vattella. He was going to go to the
(01:16:01):
big leagues and be the manager of the San Francisco Giants.
Josh is one hell of a kid. He was one
hell of a recruiter. He believes in development, local kid
who has done some amazing things that is now the
head coach of a major university defending national champion program.
(01:16:23):
So I'm proud of Josh and what he's been able
to do. I'm proud of the Islanders family and Round
Rock Dragons stand up. It's hard for me to say
good things about Round Rock Dragons because I played against
them for so long, but I got to put respect
where respect this dude.
Speaker 3 (01:16:37):
He's always good though.
Speaker 2 (01:16:39):
To see a hometown or home area boy do well.
Speaker 3 (01:16:43):
Yeah, it just makes everybody look good. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:16:45):
He's a good looking kid and been doing this for
a while. And like I said, as far as recruiting,
he's one of the best recruiters that was out there.
And they were going to interview some other guys and
people were like, how are you not getting Josh this job?
And now here he is, and uh, Tennessee. Yeah, defending
(01:17:05):
national champion Tennessee. So kudos to him and congratulations.
Speaker 3 (01:17:10):
But hey, it's still Texas over here. Josh, don't forget it. Yeah, yea, yeah, yay,
that's right.
Speaker 1 (01:17:17):
So for Mark, Henry, for Marcus, some Harball Harts, make
sure you tune in this afternoon to The crank Way
Show and it's you missed any parts of our show.
Speaker 3 (01:17:26):
Get over to the podcast.
Speaker 1 (01:17:28):
Page and make sure you tune in and lock in
