Speaker 1 (00:00):
Kelly Mans, welcome on the phone. One of our favorite
country artists, Patrick Davis.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Good morning, Good morning guys.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
Also one of my favorite Game Cup fans because I
love to sing his song as I get geared up
for the big Gamecock games during the season and this
year when you come in for the Gamecock celebrations like
you usually do, especially a couple of times during the
year of this one's got a very special meeting because
it's a lot of Gamecock and Tiger fans, and you
welcome in the chant of Clears, and you welcome into
(00:27):
Bulldogs and whoever.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Yes, this one is for everybody. This is not just
geared for my South Carolina Gamecock.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
This is the Toys for Tots, the eighth annual one
that you've done here and you're doing it again at
the Senate, and you've brought in an all star cast,
including Charlton Singleton, whom my wife, I'm sure outside of
Charlton's family, is the biggest fan of this guy. She
is infatuated with him. Lauren Jenkins, I think I've heard
(00:54):
of her. Is she a new resident to Camden.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
She lives in the house with me over here in
Canada and in Nashville. Yeah, she's a new South Carolina red.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
I'm telling you right now. She lives in the House
with Me is a title for a great country song.
It does.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
It sounds like it could go either way. It could
be a it could be a beautiful love song or
or one about heartbreak. And you know it sounds like
a Keith Whitley song.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
It could. I'm seeing you two swinging on the Swing
and the wrap around porch.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Give Jonathan and I an invite to songwriters in Paradise
with you and we can help work that out.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Hey, you know what, you guys, you can come to
a stip anytime you want. You're You're more than welcome.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
You got an amazing life going on. Like those songwriters
in Paradise. You go all over the world and you
bring in songwriters and you and people, amateur songwriters can
come and learn from some of the best songwriters. That's
an exciting thing. But let's just get refocused on this
Friday night the Senate. The doors are going to open
for VIPs at six thirty General admission seven thirty. It's
a Toys for tot fundraisers, so people should be bringing
(01:57):
new unwrapped toys but what else should they know about this?
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Well, this year's very especial because just did a big
nil thing ten days ago or so. Darius and I
did a think at the township for the game Cocks
and that was a lot of fun and have a
big event. But because that event happened, I didn't want
to do the Toys for Tots. I've always done it
the day after Thanksgiving. I didn't want to have two
gigs that close together, so I moved Toys for Tots
right before Christmas. And that's actually too late for the
(02:24):
Toys for Tots to take the toys. So I made
some phone calls and they told me that it would
be okay if we found another local charity. So we're
actually Homeless No More, which is a local charity that
does incredible things for families and for children in the
community around Columbia, is going to get all of the
toys that we bring out. You can bring, you can
bring blanket, clothing, you can bring bed, anything that you
(02:47):
want to bring new we can take and we'll give
it to Homeless No More and they will get it
to kids and families for Christmas morning, which is pretty incredible.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
And again this is a new unwrapped. In the past
you had accept did rap gifts, but then Steven Garcia
showed up with something that was inappropriate, so it.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Has to be so Steven Garcia ever do anything appropriate,
it has.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
To be unready so they can approve it as a
child's gift.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
But Patrick, I also understand these are not just toys.
You're looking for. You want clothing, blankets, bed shot.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
But yeah, yeah, one of the things A lot of
like things like bed cheet, things like that blanket home.
You know, items like that that you kind of take
for granted. I mean, you know, any cowls, I think
things of that nature, brand new and unwrapped. Know, Steven
Garcia surprises and we always go towards toys, but this year,
because of the almost no more, there is the if
(03:43):
you someone would like to bring something else, that's okay,
you know not we're not looking for food. But these
are just household items. I think a lot of us
probably we forget about some of that sometimes how important
those little items are as well. So but the great
thing about the toys with that show for me is
it really is one of my favorite nights of the year.
We put all the toys all the gifts all over
the stage. We try to make it like a holiday
(04:03):
thing where we're you know, we do Christmas songs and
things that we normally would not do. But that's kind
of what's special. That's why Charleton gets up in things.
And you know, Charleton's won two Grammys over the past
three years, so he's a South Carolina legend at this point.
You know, Xanderbo's, who's a Columbia girl and who's one
of the best singers I've ever heard, is in a
thing a few tunes, my wife Lauren. My dad just
got a new knee, so he's gonna be hopefully dancing
(04:24):
around the stage. Yeah. Yeah, it's a family event. You know.
We try to tell you know, folks bring their kids.
My little nieces and nephews love it because they like
seeing all the toys on stage and we decorate those
Christmas trees and everything. So we try to make it
as you know, festiv Us.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Now this year, is there any chance we're going to
get that Clemson guy that you will agree to see
once a year, Lee Brice? Will he be? Will he sometimes?
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Where you been?
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Where his jersey as Clemson football jersey.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
There's probably one day we're gonna we actually have had
some conversations about that. You know, one day we'll have
a have it where we you know, we play a
gig together and we all just join hands like that
old coke commercial, you know, like, yeah, the world live
in perfect harmony, you know, But not yet.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
I don't think.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
I don't think. After the game that we had a
couple of weeks.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
I was gonna say, that's the perfect time to make peace.
When you're the champion, you can be magnanimous. Okay, come
on here, loser, we're friends.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Yeah, we'll put in a good word for us because
we won't return our phone calls.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
He's probably heard you guys say go cock too many times.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
That's the thing. But I had a son that graduated
from Clemson. I come from a house divide it. Speaking
of game cocks, I got something I need for you
to push. This would be a great effort. You'll love this.
Being a country boy, I guess about eight games into
the season, when the leaves start to turn. Here in
South Carolina, I have a Japanese maple tree, two of
them in my front yard, and they turned the most
(05:45):
brilliant red slash garnet color you've ever seen you've seen
these trees just in and about. I was thinking about
what do they call that place down in Auburn. Is
it Toomey's Corners Tumors Corner where they have all the
live oaks. Yes, now I'm not suggesting that we tear
up the Horseshoe, but it would be great if we
could find a place with all the new facilities around
(06:07):
the athletic department. If you could talk to Ray Tanner
or you know, I know you taught coach Shane Beemer,
we really need to have like a street lined with
these Japanese maples. I'm going to send you a photo
of how beautiful my tree was on the Friday before
the Carolina Clemson game. I'd love to see a tree
lined street leading to Williams. Brice Stadium with these Japanese maples.
(06:28):
If you like that idea, I want you to push
it over there, because I don't. I don't get an
opportunity to talk to coach. He's very busy and Ray
Tanner won't take my phone calls anymore. But I want
to send this picture and you'll envision it and you'll say, damn,
that would be gorgeous. This ought to be a Patrick
Davis initiative.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Yeah, I mean, I feel like we could make it
a you know, I feel like Japanese trees are very
South Carolina. I think South Carolina football, I think japan
So I think that makes a lot of sense. So yeah, no,
but you know you're actually not that's not a bad idea.
I mean, those types of things would be they are
beautiful and uh yeah, yeah, you should see me send
(07:04):
me the picture. Since no one will call you back,
I will call you back though, So if.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
You I've hacked them all off over the athletic office,
Ray Tannam won't call anymore. I've hacked off Clempson people
to Lee Brice won't return my phone call. I'm pretty
big over there the chand to clear his main campus,
but not here in Columbia, up in the Upstates.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
That's actually a beautiful idea too, I mean, and you're
not wrong. There's a lot of new things being built
and little things like that, because they have done a
great job across you know, across the street from Williams
Brice with the Gamecock Park. That's that's great. But I
mean even just a few of them around there, for
like a test run see how they react. What we
really need to do is find some like some older,
sweet old ladies that like pull some purse strings that
(07:44):
they can start like writing letters.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
I could just call Kenneth Long. I think he'll still
take my phone call.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Ken would just put him out in front of the
Ken Long and Cindy Long, you know, practice facility. He
could just say, listen, I want these trees out there.
So maybe that's the move.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
We're talking with Patrick Davis and he's got the big
show coming up Friday night at the Senate. And if
you're kind of like a Patrick Davis fan, you know
him for Big ol'cock. Maybe you know him for some
of the songwriting hits like the number one where I'm
From from Jason Michael Carroll, or writing for Lady A
and Morgan Wallen and all these types of things. You
may be thinking that this is, you know, a straight
(08:18):
up country, almost country and Western type of show. But
that's not necessarily the case, is it.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
No, When I have my midnight choir, it's you know,
I grew up with my dad playing in places of that
chicken wire around the stage, you know, so I grew
up in I grew up playing rock and roll, and
so this is kind of a more of horns and
background singers. It's quite a show. And for this Toy
for TATS show, we do get to, you know, kind
of open up the playbook a little bit. A lot
(08:45):
of the great old Christmas songs that are just kind
of fun. This is a little different. You're gonna get
some of the songs that you know, you just mentioned
some of those songs. This is a unique things. It's
meant for the whole family and for everybody just to
have a good time celebrating the fact that we're all
still here.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
Will you be suited up again in the ladies, will
be in dresses and whatnot?
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Always, yeah, always, we the midnight choir. I always it's
a it might be a Friday or Saturday night, but
we're in our Sunday best.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
That's a good look for you. You've done all kind
of genres of music.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Yeah, I just.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Released a new album a couple of weeks ago, so
that'll be kind of stuff that we'll play. One of
the songs on there, it's called Carolina When I Die
and that's uh. I actually had Darius and Edwin McCain
sang it. With me, and that's all of us here.
So y'all check that out if you have it already, and.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yeah, hurry up and download the album.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
So you know the lyrics for Friday Night, Well yeah, yeah, yeah,
that's right.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
But I do. I love this show and and the
Senate's a great spot. We bring in tables and chairs.
It's not the normal like when you think of the Senate,
you think of like a you know, a big music venue.
We really try to bring this down to a smaller crowd,
make it really intimate. There's it's all seated. If you
come to the VIP like Kelly will or maybe Johnson,
if you want to come, I don't know if you
might be planting Japanese trees, I don't know, or whatever
(09:54):
you have going on.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
I get the mocking, I get them.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
I have to check with Sally, so she keeps my
count out to ask her what I'm doing Friday night.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
You know, we're five days away from Christmas. It's the
holiday season, so it's really just meant to be a
great time to get together and hang out. And I'm
back home. You know, I do have a house in
Camden now, but I don't get to get home all
that often when it comes down to it, I'm always
in Nashville or on the road. So this is a
beautiful thing to be able to spend some time with
folks I don't get to see as much as I'd
like to.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
If you give to a charitable organization of any cause,
thank you so much. If you're looking for an opportunity
to give or to give again, this is a great one.
I don't know about you, Patrick, but on Christmas morning,
I like to think about the children or the child
who may be opening up that gift, and that is
one of the best feelings in the world to know
that a kid who's face and smile you'll never see,
(10:43):
probably right now, is beaming because they were able to
get a gift that otherwise they may not have unless
you had gone to the toys for Tis Patrick's Davis
celebration Friday night at the Senate. It's just a great
feeling to be a part of that. Don't miss the
opportunity to feel really good about yourself on Christmas morning.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
Well it's there is an old Chinese proverb and it
says the best time to plant a tree is was
twenty years ago. You want to plant something that you're
never going to enjoy the shade, And that's kind of
what this is. You know, you get to give a
gift that some child is going to smile for and
you just know that it's going to bring happiness to someone.
To see all the toys. Every year, people out through themselves.
I think the first year there was like ten toys.
(11:22):
The next year there's thirty or forty, and now there's
hundreds of them, and there's bikes and there's giant like
people just try to out through their friends, you know,
and that's what you're going for. Like they'll bring giant
Teddy Bears, I mean, like the things that you would
like spend thousands of dollars trying to win the state Fair. Yeah,
they bring you know, it's just a really it's a
really great atmosphere and you know, I think everybody's probably
(11:43):
going to be a little Christmas partied out, you know,
they don't want to go to any more of the
company Christmas parties. This is a very chill fun and
come out, have a few drinks, bring some toys, and
listen to some good tunes.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
Well, we love what you do for the community, Patrick,
and we love your music, and we're excited the Senate
Friday night raising toys and other things for homeless no
more sc and we're so excited about it.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
Yeah, well, thank you guys, and I appreciate you guys
having me on. And I'm gonna I'm gonna work on
those Japanese trees.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
I just texted you the picture.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Just a quick checklist since we're mocking me, all right,
So we got a reference to a Japanese tree, we
got a reference to a Chinese tree, and we'll be
dancing around a Christmas tree as if Martin Luther and
a group of small German children were with us. It's
an international affair coming down Friday night at the Senate.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
I'm gonna let you know that you are not wrong.
I just opened this text. If you sent me these
are pretty impressive trees. You're you were correct. These need
to be I'm gonna send us to a few people.
I'm gonna send it to Ken Long right now and
say I want these outside of the complex.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
I'm gonna do if you can get a whole street
line with those the game cocks to come down with
the bus in between the garnet trees. I love it.
Thank you so much. Tell your dad we're glad that
he's recovering nicely and we hope to see him dancing
on the stage Friday night.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Yes, all right, thank you guys.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Later cock gro cock o cock
