(00:00):
All right. We were talking aboutthis show, squid Game the Challenge,

(00:04):
and how insane it is and howbig of a production this was, and
there was over four hundred people whogot to be on this show. I
really did not realize how many peoplewere on it until they did that first
like number scroll. Yeah, it'ssuch a big production and it's insane.
One of the people who was onsquid Game the Challenge is joining us now

(00:25):
and I want to get your name, right, is it Roger Van slewis
am I saying that, right, you got it? That's it. There
we go. Okay, Roger, tell me about this experience, because this
must have been absolutely insane. Whendid you first hear about the squid Game
reality show the Challenge thing existing? And then how did you end up getting
cast on the show? Yeah,it was over a year ago. I

(00:46):
was about this time last year andsomething just hit my inbox saying that they
were going to make a reality show. And I applied and didn't hear anything
for months. So they shot inJanuary and line so that's when we all
got approved. I think there wereninety thousand applications, give or take,
and then they narrowed it down toabout four hundred of us. What do

(01:07):
you have to do for an application? Was like a video kind of thing,
or yeah, exactly did I gavea forty five second video. I
only spent about five minutes on it, did three takes, and they enjoyed
it enough that I went through thecasting process, which was about eight to
ten rounds of interviews over zoom likethis, wow, and what are they
asking you? Do you know aboutthe series Squid Game? What kind of

(01:30):
questions are they asking you? Yeah, anything like that, like are you
are you able to leave your work? Are you able to be on off
site for a while? What doyou know about the show? A common
theme is what would you do withthe money? So that was that was
all those and more they kept asking. So you get the call I imagine
at some point and they go,it's on. You're you're going to be

(01:52):
on Squid Game, the challenge, let's do this. They got you out,
I imagine, or did you haveto take care of all of that?
So they flew us out? Yeah? Uh huh. So I went
to Lax. I'm Southern California based, and you just see people that you
can tell are going to be onthe show. I saw so you saw

(02:12):
other people at the airport. You'relike, we're we're going to be battling
each other for this four point fivesix million dollars right here. Yes,
yes, it's uh. And theytell you do not talk to anybody,
so you cannot talk to anybody, your friends, your family, people on
a plane. They really wanted youto keep it quiet until the show came
out. So where it was itnear London? Where was this at that

(02:34):
they were filming this, because itmust have been a huge place considering the
size and scope of these squid gamesgame sets. Yeah, they take away
all your cellular devices, all yourwatches, anything to help you know where
and when you're out. But theythey load four hundred people onto these buses
and they they took us out tolike an airport hangar to compete in a

(02:54):
red Light, Green Light and subsequentgames as well. Some of the reaction
from people on TikTok who have beenfollowing the show saying like, oh,
like uh, Sean and I werevery fascinated by the amount of microphones everybody
must have had and it had towheel that all together, and there was
like TikTokers saying like half of themwere fake. Some of people had trips

(03:16):
home booked before they were really outof the show. Do you have a
reaction to any of those claims? One hundred percent true. You know,
I had a dummy mic, soI was like, what am my friend
at a real mic? And thenI think logistically, if you're booking four
hundred and sixty people, they justit's easier to adjust the flight that's currently

(03:40):
booked than to book a new one. So they probably gave everyone a return
flight immediately, and those that madeit in further rounds they adjusted. But
there has been an outcry on socialmedia. Interesting, so they told you
flat out like, this is adummy microphone. This is not it's just
a prop right here. No,they didn't tell you. They put it
on you, so you think it'sa microphone and then you start. You

(04:01):
know, you're sitting there for hoursand hours with dry run line up.
Each each contestant goes to a booth, so one through fifty to fifty through
one hundred, one fifty to twohundred, two hundred and two fifty,
everybody goes to their respective tents andthat's there where you sit and wait to
be called out right, Yeah, and then they get you all geared up,

(04:23):
right, they had to give youthe outfit with the numbers and all
that stuff. What number did youend up with? I was player three
twenty nine, three twenty nine. You get that, you put it on?
And did they also put the squibthing on you with the thing that
made it look like you were gettingshot? Definitely. The blood pack goes
on and it's a mix of excitement, fear, and the culmination of everything

(04:46):
just happening at once. But yes, you got the mic, you got
the blood pack, and your uniformon. From what I heard as well
with these, you know, alittle bit of outcry on social media was
that, especially during Red Light Greenl how freezing cold it was now the
when you're looking at it on TV, it looked like just like a soundstage,
but clearly it was outside or didare they insinuating that perhaps like they

(05:12):
just made it as cold inside ofthis sound stage. It was in like
an airport hangar, so it's kindof picture something was no heater, no
nothing, huge ceilings, just massiveand it was freezing like I thought,
it was like thirty eight to forty. Somebody competed for nine hours. They

(05:35):
said when they finished, it wastwenty four degrees. I don't know if
that's true. And you're wearing allthey give you is a tracksuit with some
this thin tracksuit with some like thermal, some long Jns, and that they
give you two of those. Soyou're supposed to wear two long Johns in
your tracksuit, and they give youhand warmers and footwarmers. It was pretty

(05:57):
It had to be tough to managefour hundred and six people. But the
outcry has been huge on TikTok.Well do you have do you agree with
that? Do you side with thatthe people were saying they didn't treat us
right, they didn't go far enoughto make sure that we were safe on
the set of Squid Games of Challengeor do you think that they're exaggerating.
I think that of ninety thousand people, you narrow it to about four hundred

(06:20):
and fifty. Most reality shows haveabout twenty people. So a lot of
us were given a great opportunity. The reason why it probably was in Europe
and not in the US because wehave labor laws, we have meal breaks,
we have medicine. All that stuffprobably isn't here in the US,
like it isn't like it is hereand in London it's not. So that's

(06:40):
probably one of the reasons why itwas shot out there. To answer your
question, I think there's a tinybit of sour grapes on the contest.
Well, what about when they putthis squib on you? And part of
the thing that I saw was fora red light green light when or anything
else. When you lose, youget shot and it makes it look like
you got shot. Did they tellyou, like tend like you're dying.

(07:00):
Do they teach you how to likekind of fake die before you went out
there? One hundred percent they saidthey said act like they said, fall
down and die basically, you know. Yeah, just like you can't say
it on squid Game, you can'tsay, I can't say it here.
They didn't want you to. Theydidn't want you to curse, they didn't
want you to say like the Sword. They wanted to make sure,

(07:24):
you know, everything was done theright way. So there was probably a
lot of education going on as toget the whole scene perfect. Yeah,
it took, like I said,it took about nine hours and you're not
moving the whole time. So thatone girl that was in a squat position,
she probably was there for over thirtyminutes, so between the core every

(07:47):
as soon as the game started itwas live, you were not able.
You'd move ten feet, wait, fifteen feet weight and you would just have
to freeze. So let's take itto that. Let's get to red Light,
Green Light. You're out there, you're on the grounds, You're going
to get into the Squid games actionand it starts. Are you do you

(08:07):
have a strategy going? Did youthink about this ahead of time and did
you like watch the show and go, here's how I can prepare for this.
I definitely did, and boy didthat strategy backfire. Rather than be
one of the lead ones out front, I hung towards the back. I
thought that would be great. Ithought the acoustics you could hear perfectly.

(08:28):
But as the game went on,hours and hours and hours, people on
the outskirts were near the wall,so they almost leaned onto it as like
a rest. So it's a seethe way that they put it on the
show though, it's like they madeit what could be maybe a five to
ten minute segment, but you're sayingthat when they had it at Red Light,

(08:50):
people were in still position for manyminutes at a time. Oh yes,
at least ten to thirty minutes eachtime nobody passed. Nobody had passed
the finish line after about four anda half five hours. One guy,
that guy that made it first. He was the first one to make it
through. So imagine a game offreeze tag that goes on that long more

(09:11):
or less. Oh man, we'retalking to Roger Van Sewis, who is
on the show Squid Game. Thechallenge is a bunch of controversy around this.
I think it's been fantastic to watchso far. So needless to say,
if your strategy didn't pay off,you didn't make it to the other
side of that line. Huh.I did not. There's a whole hashtag
that said I didn't move, andyou know, I never saw the video

(09:33):
of me moving, but after fourand a half hours they said I did.
So boom, the pack exploded andso did my dreams. Just like
that. What was it with fourhundred plus contestants? Did it make it
harder to pick yourself out on theTV show when you went back to watch
it or because of that you werejust describing, Were you able to like,

(09:56):
go, oh, look that's whereI died athletic guy. So I
kind of thought the first two challengeswere up to me. I could do
red light green Light, I coulddo the cookie, and if I got
on a team, then I wasup to the fate of a coin toss.
So I thought by hanging out theback and focusing on just getting through,
I was going to do good. But in the end it just backfired.

(10:18):
Man. So well, one thingthat I noticed was there was this
tweet that I read earlier on thisshow where somebody was very upset. Netflix
tweeted out the video of this playerwho started crying and he was like dry
heathen and stuff. That guy wasvery strange, and they said, this
is taking advantage of people. Thisguy, you know, he's got probably

(10:41):
bills to pay, blah blah blah, on and on they were going.
And when I saw I just tookit totally different. I said, I
think these people got to experience somethingthat so many other people would die to
do, and even though they didn'tget the money, he got something out
of this. But what do youmake of the fact that people are saying
this is a mean show. Letme let me give you the actual tweet
so you can know the context ofwhat I'm saying. So Netflix tweeted out

(11:05):
the video promo of the guy crowdto they delete it. I think somebody
must have deleted it. Well anyhow, it said it said something to the
effect of this isn't entertainment, thisis abusive. What you're doing to these
people? What are your thoughts onthat? I think that Hollywood needs to
sensationalize anything a little bit. Andmost of us knew what we were signing

(11:28):
up for. It's called squigging. You know, it's gonna be something pretty
tough. And somebody who's leaving therewith four point six million basically, So
if that individual or if somebody,I mean, we knew the psychologist took
us through in the pre screening thatlike you might this might be around for
a while, so kind of watchwhat you say and how do you behave

(11:50):
And there was a lot of supportfrom a studio Lambert and groups like that
that filmed it for Netflix. Yeah, big question for you, and I
will be mad if this is notthe case. Did they let you keep
your squid game uniform? They didnot. They those things are way so
fast, like you had tournan.Yeah, are you kidding me? So?

(12:15):
They right? After your you're out, by the way, let's go
to this real quick. You getout and then you have to do the
fake death thing? Do you haveto lay down on the ground fake dead
for the entirety of the remaining challenge, so that it was implied that you
should. I don't think it wassaid explicitly, but it was implied that
you should. So after I laidon that thirty forty degree ground for about

(12:37):
ten minutes, I said, I'mout of here. I'm not going to
catch a cold. Yeah, Seeli, So they took the damn suits right
away from you because that would havebeen cool to have. Oh that sucks.
Yeah, I think I think somecontestants might have snuck them because you
went back to the hotel Walk ofshame, you know, and the next
morning you were busted right out ofthere. So it's somebody some I've seen

(12:58):
some on on the WhatsApp threads thatpeople some people kept them. Now,
have you watched all the five episodesthat are released so far? I did.
It was it was emotionally, itwas a little tough, but I
was able to get through it.When you watched it. Any of the
people who have made it pretty farnow, did you talk to them at
any point in time? Did youconnect with any of the people who've made
it that far? Yeah, soif you've watched it all, doctor V

(13:22):
he's number three thirty, so he'sright behind me. So he was my
line mate through everything, so whenhe got off the show, we stayed
in contact. And he's a greatguy. So if you want me to
reach out to somebody who made it, and he was the one that was
eliminated, if you remember, theyvoted who they're going to eliminate, Yeah,
and that was him, So he'scool. It's all so brutal.

(13:43):
Well, that's cool. I'm gladyou talked to us. We appreciate you
taking your turn doing it or doyou like appreciate your experience with it.
I would do it over again ina second. The number one person I'm
disappointed is in me not being ableto go further in the game. So
definitely I'll do it over again. If there's a season two, they know
how to get a hold of me. Thank you, Roger Van Slewich.

(14:05):
Appreciate you squid game the challenge andthat is so much harder than I thought.
Serena, I'm totally with you.I thought that they were out there
participating in that game for basically likethe length that they showed it on the
show. You imagine standing so forthirty minutes. No, I can't do
that. Yeah, I don't knowif I'd be able to do that,
and especially there were some older peopleout there, that would have been incredibly

(14:26):
difficult for them to do. Butthat was pretty cool. Yeah, maybe
we can talk to people who madeit through some of the other challenges,
because when they go further into this, it just gets more and more insane.
If you haven't watched the first fiveepisodes, those are out on Netflix,
and then I think they're releasing fourmore in the next couple of days,
and from there the finale will bereleased. So very cool him to

(14:48):
join us, and you know thatyou know him through somebody. How do
you know that guy? I knowhim through our mutual friend Pete. Oh
cool. Yeah, and the ownerof Wally's and great guy. I love
to drink with him. Nice.I'd never even thought about the fact that
if he's at La X and he'sflying out, a ton of the other
people on that flight are people whoare, yeah, who are like competing

(15:11):
in the game with him all right, let's go to you and work and
talk about it. It's like it'speople that are flying alone, you know.
It's like you can't bring your yourfamily with you on your big squid
game trip. So it's got tobe you got to like a lookout for
people who are seem to be talkingto nobody, just doing their own things.
You believe you can't keep the tracksuits, man, that's annoying,

(15:31):
chases me off. They really couldhave let them take it home. Maybe
just like urinated a little bit andtaking it with me.
