(00:10):
You're listening to news radio one onone nine Big Wax. This is the
Pits Stop, and I'm your host'sname with Pitts. It is officially July,
which means well, fourth to July. Independence is over. So I
want to welcome you guys in Ihope you had a great holiday. I'm
joined in studio today by a goodfriend of mine, a co worker of
mine. His name is Hayden.Hayden, go ahead and tell everybody what's
(00:32):
up? What up? Nay ifthank you for having me, absolutely,
Hayden Man, We're gonna talk aboutthe top ten sports movies of all time.
So Hayden came up with a listof his top ten sports movies.
I came up with a list ofmy top ten sports movies, and we're
gonna compare them and then see howthose rank compared to the top twenty on
(00:54):
ESPN's Top Movies of All Time SportsMovies. So first, like we start
every show, though, we startwith a congrats. I want to send
a congratulations to my Atlanta Braves fora strong performance in the MLB All Star
Game, sending many players to Seattleto compete in the All Star Game.
Such a great event, taking placein Seattle as they get ready to start
(01:18):
the second stretch of the season. So my congratulations goes to the Atlanta Braves.
My condolences are still in baseball. We've reached the halfway mark of the
season, and my condolence goes tothe New York Mets. It's not a
condolence to me because I love tosee them be awful, to be honest
with you, but it is acondolence because you have Max Scherzer justin Verlander,
(01:40):
which I don't know why they thoughtforty year olds was a recipe for
success. I mean, look,it's the kd Upton effect. But condolence
goes out to the New York Mets. So those are quickly my congrats and
condolences for this week. And likeI said, me and Hayden's gonna talk
top ten sports movies of all time. So Hayden, why don't we go
ahead and start at number ten?And I want to hear who your number
(02:02):
ten is? Well, I gotsome honorable mentions, just okay, I
throw out the honorable mentions, Sowe're gonna go from the I got four
honorable mentions, so real quick,we're just gonna go The Big Green.
Do you even know that movie name, The Big Green? I do not
know The Big Green. Guess whatsport it's about? Golf? Soccer?
Soccer. Okay, that was mysecond guest, so you gotta go look
(02:22):
it up. It's an underrated treasureof the goalie freaks out and he sees
the soccer players, whatever mascot theyare. So if they're the Knights,
he's like this giant knight on ahorse running at him with a soccer ball.
You gotta check it out, allright. Next is hold on,
hold on, we're gonna see howthat ranks. We're gonna see how that
ranks on the list. It's probablynot only it's not on the list at
all, so that deserves a yeah. All right, here we go,
(02:43):
so listen, No, don't anybodyat me at this. I don't care.
Remember the Titans number thirteen, allright, Remember the Totans. That's
your honorable mention. Field of Dreams. Okay, okay, hold on,
remember the Totans top twenty according toESPN. It is not on there really,
And then you said Field of Dreams, which comes in at number seven.
(03:04):
Okay, yeah, I mean, look, Field of Dreams is great
it's really more of a father's son'sstory, but it does. You know.
The background is baseball. So andthen my last non top ten is
Major League? All right, majorLeague? So according to Top twenty Sports
movies. According to ESPN, youhave Major League as an honorable mention right
outside, and believe it or not, ESPN does not have them in their
(03:28):
top twenty, not even as anhonorable mentions. Yeah, I mean,
come on, I mean this infront of me, I know, all
right, here we go, Sowe're gonna talk my honorable mentions. There's
I didn't come up with any.I'm sure there's many I could have put
on there, but let's start withnumber ten and now feel free to talk
about it as much as you want, go back and forth. Who do
you got at number ten? Forlove of the game? Kevin Costner for
(03:52):
the love of the games. Theonly time you're going to see John c.
Rally playing a professional athlete. Okay, he played catcher Detroit Tigers.
Do you remember that one? Ido not. You know, I was
in high school. I believe Itook a date to that movie. So
well, I'll tell you what. For the love of the game, according
to ESPN, is not a toptwenty movie. Listen what Boomer wrote this
(04:14):
just saying, I mean, we'regonna talk about the top twenty. So
all right, so your number tenwas For the Love of the Game,
all right, So why as forthe Love of the Game a top ten
sports movie in your opinion? So, and this is kind of going against
my argument because I said, Filledto Dreams is technically a father's son movie.
But For Love of the Game reallyis a romance movie. It really
is. It's about a legendary picturesgrapple with just being a civilian and not
(04:43):
a baseball player. Are you morein love with the diamond that you play
on or are you in love withyou know, this woman who has obviously
given her all to you and youknow. So it's really, uh,
it's kind of a messy movie. If if you've seen it, the back
and forth romance between Kevin Costner's maincharacter and the name of the actress is
(05:05):
totally I'm blanking on it. Butit's a great movie. Like I said,
he's like a famous Detroit tiger's pitcher. He's been with him since he
was a bad boy. They evenkind of have a scene that mimics when
Aaron Boone came in and knocked theRed Sox out of the playoffs. If
(05:25):
you know that play they do somethingvery similar in the movie. All right,
so my number ten, okay,my number ten. And some people
may think this is low, butit's the Bad News Bears, Bad News
Bears, that's my number ten. You've got Morris Buttermaker, who's an alcoholic.
A yeah, I know, he'san alcoholic. He's a former minor
(05:46):
league baseball player, and he isrecruited by city councilman, an attorney who
filed a lawsuit against an ultra comparativeSouthern California Little league which excluded the least
skilled athletes, including his son, from play. So, Morris Buttermaker ends
up being a baseball coach, andhe's an alcoholic. And where does that
rank on ESPN's Top twenty. Itranks it number sixteen. That's right,
(06:11):
that's right deserving. Okay, it'snot top ten, but it is in
the top twenty. Thoughts on theBad News Bears. It's been a while
since I've seen it to its completion. You know. Yeah, that's a
little dated. It's a little dated. And again it's barely it's barely Number
ten, it's just making the comok. I gotta know the movie on here
about alcoholic baseball coach. I meanthat's it seems to be a theme.
(06:32):
Seems to be a theme. Allright, Number ten, you had for
the love of the game. Ihad the Bad News Bears. Again we're
talking top twenty or top ten.Excuse me, sports movies of all time?
And again this is the pit stopon news radio one on one nine,
Big Wax Hayden, who's your numbernine? So this movie Coming of
Age? Tell um. It takestakes place during a great time period of
(06:56):
the sam Lot. A lot ofdifferent characters, a lot of gray one
liners. Um, you know thatdeserves a longer clause. US us us
guys. You know we kind ofknow what it was like to go through
that weird pubescent hot summer. Youknow, figure out where you belong.
And that's what that movie is about. Um. But uh yeah, like
I said, it's about the purityof baseball. But it's really a coming
(07:18):
of age till all right. Igotta tell you The Sandlot is a great
movie. And the Lifeguard on thesand Lot, where is she in real
life? I need to find herokay, all jokes. Asi, that's
a top that's a top movie. That's I'll give you applause on that one.
I'll come back to the sand loot. Hey, Now I got a
little bit higher than you, allright. Number nine. Have you ever
(07:38):
seen like Mike, Like Mike?I don't think I have, all right,
Like Mike is number nine. SoLike Mike is about a thirteen year
old orphan who finds a pair ofsneakers that have the faded initials of MJ
inside of them, and eventually hebecomes an NBA superstar. So yeah,
he tries off parisne curious that haveMJ faded in them. He goes from
(08:01):
the worst player ever, he goesto a basketball game, gets to come
down on the court for one ofthe little challenges against their best player,
and he beats him, gets acontract, plays in the NBA. She
has ended up breaking at the end, and it's he ends up getting adopted.
I don't I just spoiled the moviepretty much, But like Mike's a
(08:22):
great movie. It's a great movie. Just number Levy uh Man, is
Shazam in your list? Shazam betternot be in your Shazam. Let me
shack. Do what with shack? No, it's not okay, it's not
no, hold on, was itShazam? That's not right where he's a
genie? Absolutely, I don't havethat one. Okay, maybe I made
that up. All right, let'sgo on to number eight. So your
(08:43):
number nine was the same lot.Mine was like Mike number EIGHTHO. You
got quack quack quack. Mighty Ducksone. Baby, Look, every kid
in the country wanted to go learnhow to ice skate after that. Uh.
I was one of them here inyou know, super hot Birmingham,
Alabama. I was like, Iwant to play hockey. So yeah,
(09:05):
Mighty Ducks one. Emilio Estevez, like we all wanted that peewee coach,
Like Emilio Estevez coach Bombay, theydon't exist. But um yeah, once
again a coach with an alcohol problem. All right. You want to know
something. ESPN's Top twenty. Youknow where that falls. Doesn't even fall
on the top twenty. It's aDisney property, doesn't even fall on top
(09:26):
twenty. Well, Aichner's got toget on. I've never heard of it.
Eichner needs to make some editorial decisions, all right, You've probably never
heard of this one, but Iwill say it's on Netflix right now.
So if you want to go checkthis movie out, guys, you can.
It's grid Iron Gang. Grid IronGang. So grid Iron Gang features
the Rock and in this movie, which is a drama, he's a probation
officer at at Attention camp for juvenileDelincoln. This one, it's been a
(09:50):
long time and his goal is tomold teenage inmates into a successful football team.
So Dwayne dlock Johnson stars as theman who tries to turn trouble kids
into accomplish to athletes. It's agreat movie. I'll never forget. The
first time I ever seen Gridiron Gang. We were riding in the back of
my grandmother's car. You know,he got the little movie things in the
back seat of the vans. Igrew up poor, well I did too,
(10:11):
but my grandmother, my grother, and rather had the TV's in the
back seat and we went to thebeach and we watched that movie because we
had just got it. All right, Gridirn Gangs Number eight years was quite
quacked the duck. By the way, Gridiron the Gang does not fall in
the top twe according to ESPN,all right, number seven you're gonna love
mine, but you go ahead.Uh, this is a game a movie
that you know I watched over andover again. It's either on ten T
(10:33):
or TBS and you just sit downand you watch it. A League of
their Own, you can't beat Tomhanks performance. There's a lot of great
one liners. Um, I thinkabout John Lovett's being on there, the
scout. He didn't want to takeMarla Hooch because she was ugly, and
but she can mash man, shecould hit some dingers. So A League
of their own alcoholic coach. Allright, League of the League of the
(10:56):
Own. When it comes to ESPNcomes in at number twenty two. Can
you believe that's the twenty second bestmovie? WHOA, Yeah, that is
a little it's a little low consideringit's not even on my list. All
right, Number seven for me?Moneyball? This is you ever seen Moneyball?
I'm gonna be honest, I loveMoneyball and it's not on my top
(11:16):
team. I'll tell you why.I go ahead, all right, Moneyball.
In this film, we see BradPitt also Donna's Beanie, and he's
an assistant general manager Peter Brand intheir Face with the franchise is limited budget
for players, and so they haveto build a team of undervalue talent by
taking a sophisticated approach to scouting andanalyzing players. So essentially they're a small
(11:39):
you know team, like small spendingteam like you know, the Reds.
I would say the Brays, butnow they spend money. Their eighth overall
in MLB, but they don't spendmoney like the Tampa Bay Rays. And
they go and get guys based onon based average and they end up winning
baseball games. Moneyball is a greatmovie came out. It does not that
(12:00):
took plays a long time ago,and guess what, ain't nothing changed And
now they're moving out of Oakland.Wow. And I'll tell you what.
And you see a lot of moreteams that go by analytics. Maybe this
movie sparked that obviously. But whenit comes to top twenty on ESPN's list,
not on there. You know,I actually really do love that movie,
and I kind of forgot to puton my list, to be honest.
(12:20):
But the reason I kind of havea beef with that movie is,
um, it's not exactly accurate. Some of the MLB players, you know,
they've come out and said that's nothow that game happened that We're just
fine. You know, it's amovie. You gotta sensation a lot of
some stuff. But I actually loveJonah Hill and Brad Pitt in that movie.
So let's see Chris Pretts in thatmovie. Yeah, it's got a
lot of people. That's that's agreat movie. I did live it out
of my top ten list. Kindof an oversight. Moving on, you
(12:43):
mentioned it. Everybody knows Brad Pittand Jonah Hill. All right, number
six? Who's your number six?Quick? Quite quick? Mighty Ducks two.
Now we're representing the country. We'regoing to the Junior Goodwill Games.
Come on, man, we gotnew characters. We're going to La I'm
just gonna keep throwing that. Wegot we gotta place the We gotta play
the big batties in Iceland. Youknow, Russia is not the movie enemy
(13:05):
anymore. It's Iceland. And that'swhen they come out with the actual NHL
Anaheim jerseys with the hockey duck massCome on, man again, if number
one wasn't on there, Hayden, number two is not. But I gotta
tell you I did not have thaton there. Don't know that I've ever
seen it. And I'm young.I'm twenty two. Hayden is old,
(13:26):
all right, So what I'm gonnasay is age. But I have not
seen that movie, all right.Number six for me is what was your
number eight? I believe the sandLoot. It was the summer of nineteen
sixty two. A new kid istaken under the wings of a young baseball
prodigy and his rowdy team, whichresulted in many adventures. You see Scottie
(13:46):
Smalls, the shy new kid ina town who wants to join the rowdy
pickup baseball team that plays in theneighborhood sandlot. And I'll never forget the
scene obviously where he kissed the lifeguard. But you also see the baseball get
stuck in the yard with the pitbull. It's like, oh not again.
You know, we gotta figure outhow to get the baseball again. Have
you ever called anybody in l seven, weenie? I have not. It
(14:09):
was a good line for Yeah. When it comes to ESPN's Top twenty,
that's on there, I know,I know, and look, Hayden,
as you can tell, I didnot look at this top twenty list before
I made my movies. All right, My number five is gonna throw you
for a loop. So here's whatI want to do. First, I'm
gonna play audio from my favorite one, and you're gonna try to guess the
movie, all right, and thenwe'll I'll explain the movie and then we'll
(14:31):
come back to you for years.Okay, let's do it. You're ready,
all right? Number five. Alot of people are not familiar with
this movie, but here's one ofmy favorite scenes from it. You're seeing
Ross. You gonna help me out? You know a movie that's from?
Is that a Will Ferrell movie?Nope? It's nope, No, what
(14:54):
is it? I give up.Bernie Mack stars in Mister three thousand,
and he was in the bathroom withthe mascot who's like, oh my gosh,
it's Stan Ross, Like I needyou to unsit in my pass said
that, yeah it was. Itwas a mascot. Mister three thousand stars
Milwaukee Brewers player Stan Ross Bernie Mackwho angers his teammates by retiring during a
(15:18):
nineteen ninety five playoff game after makingthe three thousandth base hit, which was
required for him to enter the BaseballHall of Fame. But nine years later
and error is discovered, which invalidatedthree of his hits and cap stan Ross
from the Ultimate Baseball Honor, Sonow forty seven years old, he convinces
(15:39):
the Brewers to let him rejoin theteam to get those three last hits and
sheds his self for nature. Excuseme, sheds his selfish nature as he
rediscovers his love of the game.Spoiler alert, he ends up only being
mister two thousand, nine hundred andninety nine. But it's a great movie,
number five for you, Varsity Lose. Oh, great great movie.
(16:00):
I got. I gotta aplaud you. Seventh, seventh or eighth grade when
this movie came out, and Iwas like, is that what it's gonna
be like when I go to highschool? Because I'm so ready for that.
I'm gonna go to parties and stillcop cars and all that. Let
me tell you, high school isnot like that. Um. It probably
had to do with my high schoolfootball team couldn't even sniff the playoffs,
much less win a game. Sothat is probably why it or not to
(16:21):
get to live the varsity blues lifestyle. High scho or did you go to
high school? Irwin and Center Point? Is that even open anymore? It's
called something different. I don't,yeah, something different, all right,
So Varsity Blues is not on thetop twenty VSPN and neither is mister three
thousand. All right, so numberfive, we've got what you just said,
Varsity Blues, and then my misterthree thousand, let's move to number
(16:42):
four. Number four is an historicmovie, Hayden. I'm gonna be upset
if you don't know this one.I want a player who's got the guts
not to fight back. People aren'tgonna like this. They're gonna do anything
to get you to react. Echowith a Curson, though here only yours.
(17:03):
They changed the game of baseball forever. He's stuck. I'm gonna be
upset when you tell me this, all right. Forty two Jackie Robinson,
that's my number four. It's high, but forty two tells the story of
two men, the great Jackie Robinsonand legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM branch Rickey,
(17:25):
who have this brave stand against prejudicewhich forever changed the game of baseball.
Jackie Robinson. He is honored everyyear on a weekend where they wear number
forty two. He is one ofthe greatest baseball players to put the jersey
on and he is what changed thegame forever, no doubt. All right,
that's my number four, my numberfour. You probably haven't seen it.
(17:48):
Ten Cup Kevin Costner again, KevinCostner's all over the sports. What
is it? Ten Cup? That'sactually comes in at number twenty four on
ESPN's top list. There you go. So yeah, you know, washed
up golfer owns like this crappy littledriving range you Odessa Texas. His caddies
played by the legendary Cheech Marion, and you know, he's just it's basically,
(18:08):
hey, white trash came the townto playing a PGA tour. Don
Johnson like plays the bad guy,you know. The antagonist, Renee Russo
is the love interest. You know, it's just a good old boy getting
out there with you know, yourtoday's Roy mcelroys. And so no,
it's a it's great, great movie, great ending, a lot of great
(18:32):
characters, dialogue, all that goodstuff. Tin Cup very good. Again.
I feel like an idiot for sayingthis, but I gotta tell you
I have never seen that movie. So make a list. You're giving me
a list of babies that I needto go watch. Hayden so I appreciate
that a lot. All right, top three Now, I want to spend
some time on these because my topthree or three that you're gonna know.
(18:52):
Everybody that listens to this show, the pit stop is gonna know. So
let's start with number three. Andif you miss any of these, then
I just have nothing to say toyou, Hayden, because you know,
all right, here's number three. Here we go. I got the shakes
that will make you quick. Igot the fries that'll cross your eyes.
I got the burgers thatam I justgot burgers. All right, number three?
(19:17):
I'm sorry, I don't. Idon't. You're joking. You've never
seen the Longest Yard, you knowwhat I was thinking. Maybe that's what
it was. I might, Imight. Is it the newer one?
Uh? I probably seen it inits entirety once. But men Adam Sandler.
He's a protagonist named Paul Crew andhe's a disgraced former professional quarterback for
(19:42):
the Pittsburgh Steelers who is forced toform a team from the prison inmates to
play football against the guards. Andthis is one of the greatest movies of
all time. Like it's on Netflixagain if you want to watch it.
But Paul Crew Adam Sandler. Theygo and they play the guards. Could
you imagine the local you know,Cahoun County jail inmates playing the sheriff's signing.
(20:07):
That would be insane. But anyway, Paul Crewe puts together team Adam
Sandler. It's a great movie onNetflix. Thoughts on the Longest Yard Man,
Okay, well he's got a problem. Number three, here we go.
My number three is Friday Night LightsBilly Bobs for man. Why did
I not thinking Friday Night Lights. It's a top ten movie. And I
know the show is very popular, but the movie that started all and you
(20:29):
know, me and our program directorJohn Mount was talking about this earlier.
It's like this list isn't just like, oh, what represents the sport best?
My thing is is these are topten movies with sports themes. And
Friday Night Lights from a cinematic standpoint, a dialogue standpoint, a directorial standpoint,
an editing standpoint, was an incrediblywell made movie. You know Tim
(20:52):
McGraw's in it, you got yougot a lot of people in it.
But no, I love the FridayNight Lights movie. It really shows the
high pressure of big time high schoolfootball, like much like Varsity Blues did,
but I think maybe this one wasa more modern take on the high
pressure of big high school football.Yeah. I love Friday out Lights,
the series more that's you know, the Dylon Panthers and East Daling lines.
(21:15):
I love that series also on Netflixunless it recently took off. But that's
a great one that actually does notcome in ESPN's Top twenty, which is
a shocker to me. But thefeel the longest yard was number ten,
all right, number two. Imean you're gonna know this one. Here
we go. Time to go home. There, you just go home.
(21:37):
That's your home. Are you toogood for your home? To me?
All right? I'm sure you knowthat one, right, the old Happy
Gilmore. Happy Gilmore. Everybody that'splayed golf has tried it once. They've
tried it. You know. I'mactually really good at swingeing like that at
top golf. I got some videosI have to show you. Yeah,
until you take one step too farand you go over to the edge.
Oh. Happy Gilmore is a betterrejected hockey player who puts his skills to
(22:00):
the golf course to save his grandmother'shouse. He's a hockey player, want
to be that finds out that heis the most powerful golf drive in history.
He joins the PGA Tour to makesome money to save grandma's house.
The downside is that his hockey playermentality doesn't really go on the PGA Tour,
especially with the favorite to win thechampionship, Scooter or Shooter McGavin.
All right, your number takes somerespect on Shooter McGavin's name. I don't
(22:21):
like Shooter. Well, my numbertwo is and I stand firm, firm.
The replacements Keanu Reeves, the leagueis own strike. They got to
bring scabs in. You got aprison correctional officer, a former inmate.
Oh no, he was current inmate. You got you know. Keanu Reeves
(22:44):
plays the college quarterback Shane Falco thathurt his knee in the Fiesta Bowl and
he makes a comeback. But there'sso many great people like Jon Favreau plays
the correctional officer. Any fans ofthe office, Brian Murphy that plays Roy.
He's deaf and so yeah. Ilove the replacements, great comedy.
Gene Hackman's the old Coach and loveit all right. Number one, this
(23:07):
is the moment we've all been waitingfor. All right, what's the number
one sports movie for Namath? Herewe go. The world ain't all sunshine
and rainbows. It's a very meanand nasty place. And I don't care
how tough you are. It willbeat you to your knees and keep it
up permanently if you let it.You, Me and nobody. He's gonna
(23:27):
hit as hard as life. Butit ain't about how hard you hit.
It's about how hard you can't gethit and keep moving forward, how much
you could take and keep moving forward. Rocky Balboa by Sylvester stallone, go
ahead, the first one. That'sthe first one. Small time boxer from
the working class Philadelphia chosen to takeon raining world heaweight champion Apollo Creed.
(23:49):
All right, we got one minuteleft, Haytan. Who's your number one?
Any given Sunday? Offracino, JamieFox, Willie Beamon, Dennis Quaid,
Fred Taylor, he saw it ajeep in half with a chainsaw man,
Any given Sunday. Oliver Stone ofFantastic movie really shows the gritty grossness
of professional football. All right,I like it, all right? Number
(24:11):
our top twenty corn to ESPN quickly, and then you can give you number
twenty, When We Were Kings numbernineteen, eight, Men Out number eighteen,
Brian's Song number seventeen, Chariots ofFire number sixteen, The Bad News
Bears fifteen, White Men Can't Jumpfourteen, Breaking Away thirteen, Hoop Dreams
twelve, Jerry McGuire eleven, NorthDallas forty ten, Longest Yard nine,
(24:33):
The Hustler eight, Caddyshack seven,Field of Dreams six, The Natural five,
Slot Shot four, Hoosiers number three, Raging Bull, number two,
Rocky, and number one was BullDurham. Bull Durham's the top movie.
My granddad made this list. Heyden, thank you so much for coming on.
He thank you. All right, guys, we gotta take a break
for news and weather. You're listeningto news Radio one oh one nine Big
(24:56):
Wax. Welcome into the pit stopon news Radio one one nine Big Wax.
I'm your host, Nameth Pitts. And before the break, we were
talking about the top ten sports moviesof all time. I gotta tell you
(25:17):
we're about to talk about the toptwenty five sports teams of all time.
I'll try sports teams of all time, not franchises teams, And I gotta
tell you I feel pretty good aboutthis list that I put together. And
I gotta tell you why I feelpretty good about this list, because this
is tough when you're trying to narrowdown the top twenty five teams of all
(25:38):
time, Like it's not an easytask. You're talking twenty five teams and
you're trying to determine which one's thetop one. And I gotta tell you,
I thought that my list was good. But we'll see what you guys
think, all right, Number twentyfive. And the reason I did twenty
five is because I wanted to makesure we had enough, you know,
to fit in this segment. Sonumber twenty five is the nineteen sixty two
(26:03):
Green Bay Packers. Now they hadeleven Hall of Famers, all right,
a Lobardi Trophy like it might havebeen one of the greatest NFL teams of
all times. Remember they beat theDallas Cowboys twice in the sixties to get
into the Super Bowl. And Imean, what more can you say about
the Green Bay Packers, especially innineteen sixty two? All right? Number
(26:23):
twenty four. Number twenty four isthe nineteen eighty four Detroit Tigers. They
won the World Series against an overmatchedPadres team who had to beat the Cups.
All right, they were like theystarted out thirty five and five.
That was one of the best startsever. Detroit Tigers nineteen eighty four,
(26:44):
they're coming in at number twenty four. Number twenty three is the nineteen seventy
eight Pittsburgh Steelers, best team everto that point. The thing about football
is there are two sides to ateam, three if you include special teams.
Either way, the Pittsburghers were greaton both sides of the ball.
I mean looking at how many Hallof Famers and All Stars were on that
team. They dominated football fifteen fifteenHall of Famers and All Stars easily the
(27:11):
best team. They were the bestat that point. And the Steelers are
just a franchise that has been dominant. But the nineteen seventy eight team was
really good, all right. Numbertwenty two, Number twenty two. I'm
actually gonna go to soccer and I'mgonna go to the nineteen ninety nine Manchester
United team. Now I'm not aManchester United fan, but their nineteen ninety
(27:37):
nine team has proven as one ofthe most successful teams. They are the
most successful club in England. AndI got admit they won under Alex Ferguson,
who's one of the best managers ofall time. And the nineteen nine
nine Manchester United team dominated soccer. My number twenty one is a team that
was stacked. That was the twentyfifteen Golden State Warriors. With the numbers
(28:00):
putt put up that season, youcould argue that it's one of the best
basketball teams ever. They rocked. They started the season twenty eight and zero.
They're literally unstoppable championship team. StephCurry, Klay Thompson. This team
was unbelievable. Number twenty was thetwo thousand and eight United States Men's Olympic
(28:23):
basketball team. They dominated the Olympics. The two eight team was really a
showcase of how basketball was to beplayed in the Big Forum. They murdered
everybody. That team was unstoppable, and we love when we see our country
represent itself strongly in the Olympics. And we're gonna get deeper in these as
we get closer to the top ten. Number nineteen was the nineteen ninety three
(28:48):
Dallas Cowboys. Words cannot describe howwell this team worked as one unit.
The offensive line was dominant. Alltime leading rusher at his peak, substituting
defensive line that was impossible to block, pure passing accuracy, Aikman to Irvin
underrated Jay Novacek. I mean, this team was deep, this team was
(29:12):
talented, and this team was reallygood, and Troy Aikman is a beast.
One of the most talented teams ofall time. Number twenty or number
eighteen, excuse me, was thetwenty seventeen Melbourne Storm, best attack and
defense statistically by a long shot, finished first in the NRL after losing four
(29:32):
games before winning the premiership against theCowboys thirty four to six. The Melbourne
Storm were a really good team statistically, top twenty in any team in any
sport. Number seventeen is the nineteenninety two United States men's national team in
basketball. You could probably ask mewhy are they so low? They were
(29:52):
completely on a whole other scale thanthe rest. Yes, it was against
easy opposition, but the team assembledwill wipe out any BA or FIBA team,
including the twenty sixteen and twenty sixteenGolden State Warriors, probably MJ's Chicago
Bulls, maybe even the Showtime Lakers, and even eight straight old Boston Celtics.
They were that good. Because whenMichael Jordan, Magic Stockton, Drexler,
(30:17):
Byrd Robinson, Barkley, Pippin Malone, all of them on one team,
there's no way to stop them.End of the story. This was
the best sports team, probably professionally, Olympics wise, of all time.
And I wasn't even born yet,But you watched the highlight tape tells you
all you need to see. Numbersixteen the nineteen seventy two Miami Dolphins.
(30:38):
Someone said that the nineteen seventy nineDolphins went undefeated fourteen. Ye. No,
but you'd have to go seventeen yearoh to get a perfect regular season
nowadays. But they are the onlyteam to not lose a game the entire
season in football history. They battledthrough the injuries and all the other hardships
in their way to get the perfectseason. They had undefeated plus three straight
Super Bowls, best three year recordin the NFL, no name defense plus
(31:02):
underrated offense equal to undefeated season. But the nineteen seventy two Miami Dolphins the
only perfect season. They were thebest. They were insane. Everything about
them was good. Nineteen seventy twoMiami Dolphins. Look at where they're at
now. Number fifteen. All right, now we're getting into the top.
Fifteen. Two thousand and three NewEngland Patriots. The Patriots were awesome in
two thousand and three. Come on, they went all the way to beat
(31:23):
Carolina and the Super Bowl to havethe Lombardi Trophy in New England. With
Tom Brady, the Pads became anunstoppable force. They went on to win
the two thousand and four Super Bowlright after this. They won the two
thousand and one Super Bowl before this, which is why everyone doesn't give the
two thousand and three team enough credit. But they were dominant. I gotta
(31:45):
tell you, Tom Brady was dominant. They've won many Super Bowls over the
years. The Patriots are an awesomefranchise, awesome team. They really dominated
in two thousand and three. Numberfourteen. It's the two thousand and eight
Jamaican track and field team. You'regonna name it. You're just throwing stuff
out. Now, who's gonna beatyou? Sain Bowl? No One.
(32:06):
That counts for something. Two thousandages of making Trek and Fill team All
right, Number thirteen, two thousandand nine FC Barcelona. I can't understand
how soccer teams don't get enough credit. I mean it's the national sport in
the world, biggest sport in theworld, totally dominating all right, Well,
the two thousand nine FC Barcelona team. They dominated the game in Spain,
(32:28):
in Europe, winning everything, nocontest. I mean they conquered everything.
This team was put together by oneof the best coaches ever and the
best soccer player of all time,Lionel Messi. This team dominated. They're
deserving of being in the top fifteen. Number twelve nineteen seventy five Cincinnati Reds
(32:52):
could easily be in the top five, but they're not. The record says
it all. The Reds were thebest in the seventy five and seventy six
years. Three players in the topfive of the MVP voting. The big
Men, the Big Red Machine wantedall with ease, from every fielding position,
the entire pitching staff to the manager. This team deserves to be ranked
(33:13):
to put up at the top amongthe best. The different personalities that enveloped
this team were tremendous both offensively anddefensively. They were top notch, and
this is rarely the case by othergreat teams in any sport. But what
really set this team apart was everyplayer had a desire to win, and
it showed in their play. CharlieHustle, little General, the Destroyer,
the Chief Junior, Little Joe.I mean, the nicknames are there for
(33:37):
a reason, because this was ateam for the ages, all right.
Number eleven, the nineteen ninety eightChicago Bulls. They're good because they had
MJ. But it just wasn't thatit was the whole team. It was
the triple threat. Any team withMJ's great right, So say whatever you
want about who was on it,but Dennis Rodman was nowhere near the offensive
(33:58):
player that Michael Jordan was. Upand alone wasn't as clutch as Jordan was,
but it didn't matter. They werestill great players. Jordan was great
in the nineteen ninety eight season. He ranked up his fifth NBA MVP Award.
The Bulls won the NBA Championship, beating the Jazz in six games without
a doubt. Won the best teams. Number ten, sticking to basketball is
(34:21):
the twenty sixteen Golden State Warriors.Again. The Golden State Warriors quickly became
a franchise that had dominated and hasdominated NBA. In the National Basketball Association,
Steph Curry, Clay Thompson Draymond Greenewere that core that started what became
many many championships. For the twentysixteen Golden State Warriors, they are at
(34:43):
number ten as they start the topten. For me, Number nine is
the nineteen eighty nine San Francisco fortynine Ers. Joe is about a shadow
of doubt a top three quarterback.Ever, Joe was every thing the perfect
quarterbacks should be. He broke themold, he created it. Joe Montana
(35:06):
is why football is what it is. You can talk about far, you
can talk about Tom Brady, butJoe Montana was the one that started all.
Like, when I think American football, I think Joe Montana, like
Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, RonnieLott, Dion Sanders, Roger Craig,
John Taylor, Steve Young. Like. This team was unstoppable. They dominated
(35:32):
NFL football and because of Joe Montana, this team won three Super Bowls.
Nineteen eighty nine San Francisco forty nineErs. How about number eight, the
nineteen eighty four Edmonton Ullers. We'retalking ice hockey. Nobody even watches ice
hockey as much anymore, at leastnot in the South. But this sports
team is one of the best. And if you ever heard of them,
(35:53):
look him up. This team hasheard of along with the Maple Leaves in
Montreal. It takes a spectacular teamto beat another team in the Stanley Cup
who has won four straight Stanley Cups, and the eighty eighty four Olders did
just that. They're arguably one ofthe best hockey teams ever. And you
gotta wonder, you know, afterall these years, if they still rank
(36:16):
up there in current day, andI think they do. I gotta tell
you Messier Coffee, Gretzky three,Babe Bruce on the same team. Great
hockey team, all right. Numberseven the nineteen seventy two Los Angeles Lakers.
I don't think that very many peopleknow that Pro champs used to play
exhibition games against the Harlem Globetrotters, who took this Lakers team apart. They
(36:39):
were one of the best teams. It was the best big three at basketball
ever with three players in the topfive scoring gaverage of all time, Wilt
Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor and Jerry West. That's enough to get in at number
seven. On number six, asthe nineteen eighty five Chicago Bears, again
one of the best NFL teams ever, maybe the best team ever. I
(37:02):
don't know. I've got them rankedas the best football team ever. And
I'll tell you why. The reasonI have them listed so high is not
only because they were undefeated. Somaybe that you know, you know,
not excuse me because they were notundefeated. You say, why do I
have them at number one? Butthey had some groove to them. You
just watched the Super Bowl Shuffle.I mean, the greatest football team of
(37:25):
all time. It doesn't matter thatyou had the undefeated Dolphins, but the
Bears were the greatest. I meanagain, they had two playoffs shutouts,
and there's nothing better than the SuperBowl Shuffle. You remember the singing Super
Bowl Shuffle. Yeah, it's prettyawesome. Nineteen eighty five Chicago Bears.
(37:47):
You look at this team, Imean it started and I'm not even a
Chicago fan. It's a poverty franchisenow personally, but you look at this.
They're still one of the most famousteams ever because they're brilliance. This
is a team that was disruptive. You had the greatest running back in the
(38:07):
NFL history, Walter Payton. Youhad the best middle linebacker in NFL history,
I mean, you can go onand on about this team that finished
with a fifteen and one record, did go undefeated at home, So I
gotta tell you they may have hadone loss to Dan Marino and the Miami
Dolphins, but ultimately they did getthe last laugh as they won Super Bowl
(38:30):
twenty. So the Chicago Bears nineteeneighty five all right, nineteen seventy seven
Montreal Canadians. The All Star Gamethat season consisted of half their team is
the stingiest defense led by the Bigthree in Robinson, Savard and Lapointe.
Probably said that wrong, as wellas three of the top five scores.
(38:51):
It was an eighty game season whichthey lost just eight games and a record
one hundred and thirty two points thatstill stands today. Of course, when
you have the greatest coach of alltime, Scotty Bowman, he makes it
look pretty easily. They were simplythe greatest hockey team in the world.
The NHL was created as well asthe excuse me, the NHL was created
by the Halves as well as itsprodessor, the NHA. They have the
(39:14):
most cups, their logo CH's iconicworldwide. I mean, their fanbase is
global, I can't think of manyteams that were on the same level as
the nineteen seventy seven Montreal Canadians. Now I was not alive at this time,
but the highlights again speak for themselves. They're the most successful team in
the NHL, winning the most amountof Stanley Cups and bringing to the NHL
(39:36):
many of the best players in thehistory of hockey. So best hockey team
ever assembled. The nineteen seventy sevenMontreal Canadians Number four the nineteen ninety six
Chicago Bulls. You may go,how are they number four? Actually,
you know what, I'm gonna movethem up. I'm gonna make them number
(39:59):
three. My number four is thetwenty thirteen New Zealand national rugby team.
You go, you're just coming upwith stuff. Well, statistically they're top
five. Statistically, they're probably thetop sports team ever. But nobody keeps
up with national rugby. Well, the twenty thirteen New Zealand national rugby team,
(40:20):
the New Zealand All Blacks, wereby far the most consistently successful sports
team in the history over the pasthundred years. Over the past four years,
they had maintained a winning percentage ofninety five percent. Yeah, that's
ridiculous, not to mention they maintainthe number one world ranking in eleven out
of thirteen years at the ranking systemexisted. If people can't understand why the
(40:42):
All Blacks is one of the greatestsports teams, and even those people only
live in America because baseball is greatand we don't keep up with rugby.
But it's a worldwide sport. We'retalking worldwide. Not only have this team,
not only has this team maintained awinning record over all the other countries
for over one hundred years. Theyhave done so with a population that started
(41:04):
at eight hundred thousand to the currentpopulation of four point seven million New Zealand
Blacks. They won the twenty fifteenRugby World Cup right after. It's been
a dominant team, all right.Number three nineteen ninety six Chicago Bulls.
Name any other team with athletes sotalented they could bring their city in state
six championships in eight years. Thiswasn't just dominance, This wasn't just force.
(41:30):
This was gravity. Each time theyjumped, you knew they were going
in. You knew the ball wasnot gonna miss. My opinion is it's
the Chicago Bulls are the best NBAteam of all time nineteen ninety six six
known the Championship MJ. So,why is the ninety six team considered the
greatest? Well, everyone knows MichaelJordan was the star, but again his
(41:52):
court partners were just as good SteveKerr, Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen.
I mean they went seventy three andnine. I mean, best basketball team
in history without a doubt, allright, Number two way before my time,
way before my parents' time, waybefore my grandparents' time. But it
(42:13):
was the nineteen twenty seven New YorkYankees. And I think the reason the
Yankees are number two is because thenineteen ninety eight New York Yankees were just
more in my time. But youlook at the New York Yankees in nineteen
twenty seven. Sure, the Yankeesare probably the world's most famous and prolific
winners in baseball, but they're notalways the best. The days that they're
(42:36):
not that dominant is really more so. Today you talk about one of the
greatest ever. You gotta look atthe nineteen twenty seven New York Yankees.
I mean, there's not a questionwhen you look at the nineteen twenty seven
New York Yankees. This team wasled by one of the greatest players of
all time. This was the twentyfifth season of the New York Yankees.
(42:59):
The team finished with one hundred andten wins and forty four losses, winning
their fifth pennant and finishing nineteen gamesahead of the Philadelphia Athletics, and they
were tied for first or better forthe whole season. Miller Huggins. How
good were the nineteen twenty seven NewYork Yankees, you ask? They were
pretty good enough that they would sendsix players to the Hall of Fame.
(43:21):
I mean they had a team payrollof two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
They led the majors and home runs. They led American League in both home
runs and ra A. Babe Ruthalone hit sixty home runs more than any
other team in the league. LouGarrick Belt at forty seven. He led
the majors with one hundred and seventyfive RBIs. So they were known as
Murders Row. That was the nicknamegiven to this team because of what they
(43:45):
did to other people. Nineteen twentyseven New York Yankees top sports team of
all time in my opinion, nineteenninety eight New York Yankees. Again,
nobody dislikes the New York Yankees morethan I do, but you can't deny
what they've accomplished. Statistically. Thenineteen ninety eight New York Yankees were incredible.
(44:09):
The ninety sixth season for the Yankeeswildly regard as one of the greatest
teams ever. My greatest team forsure. It finished with a franchise record
of one hundred and fourteen wins andforty eight losses. They set an American
League record for wins in a season, a record that would eventually get pasted
in two thousand and one when theSeattle Manners won one hundred and sixteen games
(44:29):
in the regular season. But itwas the Yankees pitcher David Wells who pitched
the fifteenth perfect game in baseball history. It was a New York manager named
Joe Tory. The Yankees played inwhat was a phenomenal atmosphere in the postseason.
They swept the Texas Rangers in theAmerican League Division Series. They won
(44:51):
the American League pennant by beating theCleveland Indians four games to two in the
American League Championship, and then whenthey made it to the World Series.
They swept to San Diego Padres tocapture their twenty fourth World Series if you
include the playoffs. The nineteen ninetyeight Yankees won a total of one hundred
and twenty five games against fifty losses, which was an MLB record. They
(45:15):
won the division by twenty two games, which was over the Boston Red Sox.
This team is the top team ofall time in my opinion. And
you look at the nineteen ninety eightAmerican League record, they were phenominal.
When undefeated against Kansas City ten beathim ten games to zero. They went
(45:37):
thirteen and three against the National League. Again, we talked about the players.
You had, Willie Banks, youhad Orlando Hernandez, you had Jeff
Nelson, Marianna Rivera, Mike Stanton, David Wells, Joe Girardi, Hore
Posada, Derek Jeter, Tim Rains, Bernie Williams, Joe Torrey, the
(46:04):
manager. This team was phenomenal. They're my number one team, the nineteen
ninety eight New York Rank Yankees. All Right, before we close, I
want to talk about the top tensports teams with the biggest bandwagon fans.
All right, Top ten bandwagon whatdoes bandwagon mean? Let me go ahead
and explain to you what bandwagon means. Okay, Bandwagon is when someone who
(46:29):
isn't a fan necessarily is all ofa sudden pulling for another team. Okay,
so it's a popular, you know, fancy attraction team, you know,
like I've always grew up a HoustonRockets fan, but now that the
Son's got Katie and they just wanta championship, I think I'm gonna go
(46:51):
pull for them. So it's jumpingship. It's going in jumping ship on
another team. Number ten, I'mactually gonna go to the Albama Crimson Tide.
I think that's a team that alot of people bandwagon across the world
because they've been dominant in sports forthe longest time. So I'm gonna have
to go with probably Alabama at numberten, and you could almost replace them
(47:13):
with Georgia at this point. Butnumber ten's Alabama. Number nine's the Los
Angeles Lakers. I mean, comeon, they only care about superstars and
championships and they you know, don'teven win as much. But it's the
most bandwagon team at NBA in myopinion. Everybody starts, well, there's
one other team that's probably more bandwagonthem, and I'm gonna save them.
(47:36):
But I'm gonna go to the Lakers. Number nine, number as the Boston
Red Sox. What a surprise whenthey were in the base, when everyone
hated them, started winning, everybodyloves them. I mean remember when everyone
was sympathetic for the Red Sox.Oh how times have changed. Yeah,
Number as the Boston Red Sox.This one's really bad. Dallas Cowboys,
(47:57):
I mean, definitely a bandwagon team. It's sure is Texas is pride and
joy. I feel like almost everyother person likes the Cowboys in Texas only
because it's a Texan team. Likenobody talks about the Tech Sands, they
talk about the Cowboys. Like onceDallas loses, oh, everybody starts freaking
out. Here's one that you'll probablyaren't going to agree with. But a
(48:20):
team that started bandwagoning was the TampaBay Rays. They sold about five hundred
tickets a game. Then all ofa sudden, they were selling out obnoxious
fans with their cow bells. TampaBay raising number six, number five,
Notre Dame. People hop on andoff this bandwagon so much they used the
classic excuses. You know my hairTrimmer's fifth cousins six times where moved went
(48:43):
to the college near it or somesay, of course I'm Catholic, which
is understandable, but I don't knowwhat it is. But fans of Notre
Dame, it's their bandwagons. Iknow a guy personally, it's a Notre
Dame fan. He lives in Alabama. How'd even become a Notre Dame fan
in Alabama? Number four is NewEngland Patriots. Tom Brady I'm sure has
a lot to do for this, but everybody jumps on the bandwagon for the
(49:05):
New England Patriots. Number three isthe Golden State Warriors. Nobody was a
Golden State Warriors fan Steph Curry andthen went some championships. Everybody's a Golden
State Warriors fan. I don't understandit. Two's to see Alice Seahawks.
Yeah, like they won a coupleof years of Russell Wilson and everybody came
out of the closet. Number onetop sports bandwagon team of all time.
New York Yankees. I literally havea friend who doesn't watch baseball, but
(49:29):
it's like, yeah, I'm aYankees fan, Like you don't even watch
Yeah, but I am and heswears he's a fan. Like they come
to Atlanta and he goes and watchingthem, he goes. We have twenty
seven championships. Yeah, and nonesince two thousand and nine. Anyway,
that's your top ten sports bandwagon teamsof all time. All right, guys,
I gotta go, but hey,I want to thank you for tuning
(49:49):
in. Happy July. We'll beback next week. You've been listening to
the pit Stop on news Radio oneh one nine Big Wax
