Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the press box with Marty Banister, the latest
on all local sports from Wright State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine to three seven by three
one six ' one seven zero the press box on
Fox Sports nine eighty WNA.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Nothing that happened today caught us off guard. We were
prepared for all of it. We took our shots when
we had the opportunity to put some runs up and
like I said, placed bets and then just.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Didn't come through.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vote after yesterday's loss to the
Detroit Tigers, putting the Guardians on the brink of elimination,
and that could happen. Oh by about nine o'clock tonight.
Welcome to the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty wn
AM Marty Banister. We are so glad you're with us
here on this Thursday afternoon, another great day weatherwise outside,
and we're glad you're with us here today as we

(00:55):
talked sports with you are allowed to get into in the
program today. The return of the Magnificent Set then comes
up in about fifteen minutes. Kelly and I will pick
our top seven teams in the National Football League right now.
We go with seven because well, that's the amount of
teams that make the playoff from make the playoffs from
each conference. We thought we would just keep it to
the NFL instead of trying to break it down by

(01:15):
a conference. But still, we like this segment. We think
you like it as well as we've had a lot
of great response to it since we started it. And
it even has its own theme music too, which when
a segment has its own theme music, it just tells
you how important it really really is. So we'll have
that for you a little bit later on. By the way,
Kelly be back today producing the program and has her
phone back today, so she's back among the well, I

(01:38):
don't want to say back among the living, but back
among those that can communicate with the rest of the world. Yeah,
a better way of putting it, right.

Speaker 5 (01:45):
Yeah, that was a bit traumatic.

Speaker 6 (01:50):
I feel like the phone people must have heard me
whining yesterday, because this morning they called me and they
were like, hey, we have a phone for you, sorry
for the hassle, And wow.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Yes you mean you actually had somebody call and apologize
to you.

Speaker 6 (02:05):
Yeah, yeah, I mean I definitely I appreciate it because
when I was at the store, I was the one
with the hassle. I was giving the hassle. I definitely
was not my nicest self.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
So well, and nor should you have been. I think
you have every right as you as you outlined for
us yesterday, I think you have every right to be
a little upset about the way this whole thing played
itself out. But good your phone's back, and good to
have that for you. And I know it makes your
life but just a little bit easier too, so good
to have that. So the hurricane has basically moved off

(02:42):
the now east coast of Florida. Did you see the
pictures of Tropicana Field where the Tampa Bay Rays play. Wow,
good portion of the roof was just taken completely off
and just demolished. And they had set up thousands of
cots and beds inside the dome for first responders who

(03:04):
were down there to try and help, had set that
up for them to have a place to go and rest. Well,
that's not happening now because the good portion of the
roof has been torn off of Tropicana Field. If you
follow baseball and football and whatnot as far as stadiums
and things along those lines are concerned. There has been

(03:25):
a movement for a number of years to get a
new facility built in Tampa for the Rays. And in fact,
even a couple of years ago, there was talking they
were going to play half their games in Montreal and
then play the other half back in Tampa. And thank goodness,
that never came.

Speaker 5 (03:41):
To fruition, Thank goodness, But I.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
Wonder, and again key things in perspective. Now we're talking
about something caused by a storm, But you wonder how
much this will accelerate whatever plans they have in place
to get a new facility built for the Tampa Bay
Ray And that facility it hosts many things more than

(04:04):
just baseball. There are concerts there for the longest time
before they built the I forget the name of the arena,
but that's where the Tampa Bay Lightning played hockey there
for a number of years inside the dome. There is
also a bowl game there. I think it's the Gasparilla Bowl,
I think plays in Tampa. It has hosted. There's been
a Final Four there. Ohio State played the Final Four

(04:26):
there once. I think it was nineteen ninety nine. The
Buckeyes went down there and made a surprising run to
the final four and lost. I think I think they
lost to Yukon that year in that semi final. So
the Dome has had a has had its share of
big events, but right now it's missing a good portion
of its roof and it needs that that yeah yo, yeah, yeah,

(04:49):
that would that would help. Be interesting to see what
they what they decide to do now with the Dome.
I don't know how long I've never I mean, I've
put roofs on a house, but I never had to
put one back on a home. I don't know how
long this will take. And of course baseball season for
Tampa still months away, so but that uh, but those

(05:09):
pictures were just wow, just amazing. And uh fortunately, and
I keep that term used lightly, the storm was not
as bad as a lot of people thought it was
going to be. Uh when it hit the Tampa area.
It came, when it came across as as a three,
when it when it when it when it made landfall,

(05:29):
and fortunately it was not the devastating storm. I mean,
there's still a lot of damage down there. I'm not
trying to downplay any of that, but uh, fortunately it
wasn't the monumental storm that it was looking to be
when it started to bear down on Tampa, because it
was a Category five and almost in the blink of
an eye, became that. So it's moved off the coast.

(05:50):
No word yet on what will happen. I know there's
At last check I heard, there was something like two
to three million people without power. Yeah, and a good
swath of or to Cincinnati is scheduled to play UCF
there Saturday in a college football game in Orlando with
a three thirty kick on Saturday afternoon. I know, good
portion of Orlando. There's a lot of water damage there,

(06:13):
tornado damage where they had some monstrous tornadoes spun out
of this storm.

Speaker 6 (06:17):
Yeah, the wind did I mean, there's there is a
lot of damage. For example, in downtown Saint Petersburg, a
whole scaffolding fell into the building it was supposed to
be holding up, so that didn't work. Yeah, So you know,
the wind was was windy.

Speaker 5 (06:37):
It was windy, all.

Speaker 4 (06:40):
Things being equal, Fortunately it was not, as I said,
the devastating storm that it sure looked like it was
going to be when it first spun up out in
the Gulf of Gulf of Mexico. So but again the
pictures are easy to find on social media. And see
what's left of Tropicana Field right now, So just a

(07:01):
remarkable scene. We have a couple of fan polls up
for you today, as we always do, and we're asking
you a couple of questions football related. Number one, of course,
big game on Saturday across college football. Texas Oklahoma play
on Saturday as well too. That doesn't quite have the
national impact of what will happen in Eugene, Oregon on
Saturday night. That's where a high state and Oregon will play. Well,

(07:22):
we're asking you today what does the loser of that
game have to do to go on and make the
College Football Playoff twelve team field win out or get
to the Big Ten Title Game. And right now sixty
six percent of you say they just have to get
to the Big Ten Title game and win or lose.
I mean, I don't think either team would have a

(07:45):
loss going into the Big Ten Title Game whoever loses
the game on Saturday. If you check their schedules of
the two, I think Oregon would be the more likely
of the two if they were to lose on Saturdays.
You might think they could lose again. I don't see
Ohio State losing other I don't there's no from what
I've seen, there's nobody else on the schedule that can

(08:06):
beat them, at least right now. As we talked yesterday
and we've talked about the week. We'll find out certainly
a lot more about them on Saturday night. But that's
one of our fan polls today. Also on the program today,
we'll hear from Oregon. We'll hear from Dylan Gabriel, the
Ducks quarterback, and we'll hear as well two from head
coach Dan Lanning during the show today. Also we're asking

(08:26):
today Kansas City, Minnesota, Washington, and Houston are the only
NFL teams right now with records of ford and to
one or better. So we thought we'd ask you today
pretty simply, what is the best team of those four
right now? We know who Kelly will vote for, but
the rest of them, Kansas City, Washington, Houston or Minnesota.
Kansas City, Minnesota, they only unbeaten teams at five and zero,

(08:48):
Washington and Houston the only four to one teams. Everybody
else is worse. Three and two are worse in the
NFL right now, Right now, fifty percent going with Kansas
City Houston, Minnesota also getting votes. No when Kelly has
voted for your beloved commanders as of yet.

Speaker 5 (09:03):
So haters are gonna hate.

Speaker 4 (09:07):
If they somehow managed to beat Baltimore on Sunday change
and I think that that changes the dynamic about them.
I think in a hurry, and I'm rooting for them.
I'm rooting for him. I'm sure they got to start losing.
Of course, Cincinnat's gotta start winning. So if not, that
all of its moot. But but those are two fan pulls.

(09:29):
And again those are up for about another hour and
forty minutes or so during the program today, as we mentioned,
we'll hear from Dylan Gabriel. We'll hear comments from Dan
Lanning as well too. From the Oregon side of things.
Heading into Saturday Showdown, the baseball playoffs roll along again.
Just to me, there's nothing like postseason baseball. I just

(09:49):
love at the afternoon playoff games. It's so much fun
and the intensity level of these games has just been remarkable.
The Tigers yesterday blankly in or blank. The Indians blank
the Guardians all of a sudden, the Guardians have forgotten
how to score put seven runs on the board, and
they opened the game of that series, have been blanked
in the last two games. And as I forget who,

(10:12):
the color announcer was on the Guardians on the national
broadcast yesterday but dropped this gem, the Guardians have to
figure out a way to score some runs. Well, I
thank you. I don't know we can get too much
more in depth than that.

Speaker 5 (10:28):
He's a thinker.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
Well yeah, but Detroit's pitching has been a sensational since
Game one. And remember the Guardians when they scored five
of those seven runs in the first inning, So really
they've only scored two runs since then with their offense
struggling and six O eight the first pitch from a
Detroit at Comerica Park, and if you saw any of

(10:51):
the game yesterday, the atmosphere, think twice what that's going
to be like tonight with the Tigers with an opportunity
to move to the American League Championships, that place is
going to be off the hinge when they throw the
first pitch in that game a little bit later on
this evening, Also tonight, Kansas City and the Yankees will
play in Game four of that Division series. The Yankees

(11:11):
winning last night knocking off Kansas City, so New York
can advance. Boy, the last thing of the world. We
need a subway series. The Yankees Mets. We're that's not
out of the revel possibility, but that's a distinct possibility.
The Yankees hang on getting some good relief, pitching down
the stretch and beating a Kansas City. So the series

(11:34):
in favor of the Yankees two games to one. Dodgers, Braves, Mets,
Phillies get the day off. Those series will pick back
up tomorrow. They'll wait to see what happens tonight with
these two games before they determiner times. I would think
I haven't seen the schedule with it being Friday. I
was gonna check that and didn't do it, But I
would imagine the Americanly will have tomorrow off if if

(11:57):
both series go to a let's see, Well, there's just
one game on the schedule for tomorrow. It's the Dodgers
Podres series for a game number five of that series,
so that will be tomorrow night at eight o'clock. If
there is a game five in the American League series,
it will be at four point thirty on Saturday between
the Guardians and the Tigers and the Yankees and Royals.

(12:18):
If there is a Game five, it will be in
New York and it will be a little bit after
eight o'clock on Saturday night. They throw the first pitch
in that game. So that's where things day. And there,
of course, the Mets eliminated the Phillies yesterday, so they
await the winner of the Los Angeles San Diego series
in the National League Championship Series, which will open at
the winner of that series the San Diego Dodgers series.

(12:41):
So that's where baseball stands right now. Let's see what else.
There's college football tonight, because we're in that stretch of
football every night for fifty some odd days. It's Florida
International and Liberty meeting tonight. Last night, Jacksonville State trampled
New Mexico State fifty four to thirteen. I'm sorry, that

(13:05):
was Thursday to the Floridation Liberty game. That was Tuesday.
Liberty won that Tonight. Coastal Carolina had James Madison Middle
Tennessee at Louisiana Tech and UTEP at Western Kentucky. Those
are the games. There's a big ten game tomorrow night,
Northwestern's at Maryland. That one will kick at eight o'clock.
And there's also a PAC twelve game or Big twelve

(13:25):
game tomorrow night, rather sixteenth rank in Utah at Arizona State.
You would normally associate that being a PAC twelve game
because both those teams used to be in the PAC twelve,
but that is in fact a Big twelve game. Columbus
Blue Jackets skate for the first time in regular season
play tonight as they opened in Minnesota. We had Dave
metzeld On yesterday to talk about that a little bit.
State wide. Top ten polls are out in high school football.

(13:46):
Will run out some of those for you as well too,
and get you updated on everything that's going on elsewhere
around the world of sports. When we come back the
Return of the Magnificent Seven, Kelly and I will go
through our top seven teams in the National Football League
and give you our thoughts on why we picked the
teams in the order that we did, and we'll do
that when we come back. So we're gonna have you
with us here on this Thursday afternoon. It is the
press box Fox Sports nine eighty w A eight.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
three seven by three one six, one seven zero The
press Box on Fox Sports nine eighty w O n
E head.

Speaker 4 (14:52):
I'm back with you here on this Thursday afternoon. It's
the press Box, Fox Sports nine eighty WYT Marty Bachelor,
Kelly B's producing the program and we're with you right
up and I mean right up until five o'clock during
the show this afternoon. In just a moment or so,
we will bring back the Magnificent seven. Kelly and I
select our top seven NFL teams, and we'll get your
thoughts and comments on that fact. We already have one,

(15:13):
so we'll do that when we come back with that
here in a couple of moments. A couple of things.
Update you on the Columbus Blue Jackets. As I mentioned
open up play in the National Hockey League tonight. Boone Jenner,
who is one of the leaders on that team, underwent
shoulder surgery today is expected to miss five to six
months of the which is pretty much the National Hockey
League regular season. Not that the CBJ we're going to

(15:36):
make a well, you can never say never, but no
one will put them in the playoff contenders. You start
looking in the Eastern Conference. So five to six months
for Boone Jenner out and Adam Wainwright, who is getting
a lot of flack on the Fox broadcast for his work.
They are perceived he and Aj Perzinski and Adam aman

(16:00):
was the play by play announcer are perceived as being
had been were perceived as being anti Philadelphia during the
series and on the side of the Mets. I will
always refer back to what the great John Shamby says
when he opens a broadcast in the postseason. Again, local
broadcast teams on TV do not carry their team in

(16:22):
the postseason. Baseball has TV deals. That's why it's and
it's been done like that four years. Not the first
time this has ever happened. But John Shamby always says,
welcome to the broadcast. And I'm paraphrasing, but after that
he says, let's say he's using I don't know who
his color announcer is, just I'll say Bob Smith. Bob
Smith and I here are with you. We are the

(16:42):
guys who hate your favorite team. And that that is
so descriptive of the reaction that fans throw at national
announcers who fans, for some unknown reason, seem to think
that all national announcers hate their team. I mean, you
watch any broadcast, you watch a Browns broadcast, those guys,

(17:03):
hey he does. They can't. No, they don't. Just because
they're not talking about things that you think they should
be talking about about your team, it doesn't mean they
hate your team. Remember the flat Joe Buck caught back
in the World Series in twenty sixteen for constantly talking
about Kylesh Sharber and mainly by then Indians fans. Did

(17:24):
he go overboard with that a little bit? Yeah? Probably,
but it was a story that was the story at
that point of the series, that Schwarber was doing what
he was doing. Yeah, And how you can ignore that
and not understand that it just but fans are blind
to that stuff and it's just just the way that
it works. But at anyway, Adam Waynwright was asked on
a podcast about his memories of pitching a Great American

(17:48):
Ballpark where the Reds play, and he says, when they
decide to implode Great American Ballpark, he wants to be
there to push the button. He has at hearn run
to average of over five at GABP in his career.
So well, sorry, sorry about your luck, Wayo, You're not
the only pitcher that has struggled in the great American

(18:08):
small park. It's it's it's not exactly a haven for pitching.
So uh. Speaking of baseball, six oh eight, the first pitch,
game number four of the American League Division Series and
Detroit Tigers and Guardians. With the Tigers up in that
series two games to one, Yankees and Royals. Tonight the
Yankees can close out that series in Kansas City, leading

(18:31):
that series by the count of also two games to one.
All right, it is time once again for the Magnificent
seven to ride. Time to pick our top seven. This
is one of those movie themes that's when you hear it,
it is, it's outstanding. If i'd shut up, you could

(18:52):
hear it more, and I will. It's one of those
movie themes. If you are like me, a movie fan,
you know exactly what movie it is. And there are

(19:12):
so many movies like that. I mean, we could do
a whole segment on that iconic When you hear a
certain theme, when you hear the theme to Star Wars,
when you hear the theme to Jaws, when you hear
the theme to Raiders of the Lost Ark, well, what's
the there's a great video of Harrison Ford out where
he walks onto a stage to give a speech. I
think they were honoring Martin Scorsese at an event, and

(19:34):
Harrison Ford walks onto the stage and they play the
Raiders of the Lost Ark theme. As he walks onto
the stage, he gets up to the microphone. He stands
there with this disgusted look on his face and he goes,
I can't get away from that, damn soul.

Speaker 5 (19:48):
I believe that.

Speaker 4 (19:48):
I believe they play it when I walk on the stage,
they play it when I walk off the stage. Of course,
he played Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost
Art movie. So there you go. All right, okay, all right,
let's get back to business now. And that is, of course,
our picks for the Magnificent Seven. We had our segment
debut last week to good responds. A lot of people
said they liked the picks, mainly mine, not Kelly's. So

(20:09):
we'll continue on.

Speaker 5 (20:10):
Wow, okay, so we're growing, we're learning. I think we're
gonna have is what it is.

Speaker 4 (20:18):
Okay, as always, as always, Kelly gets the chance to
go first, and we go in descending order, seven to
number one. Kelly, you have the floor, your top seven.

Speaker 6 (20:27):
All right, this one, this one, I think everyone's gonna love.
I have the Falcons of Atlanta in the number seven spot.
I know that feels a little bit wild, but we
all know that I think that Kirk Cousins is a
stud quarterback.

Speaker 5 (20:44):
Okay, five hundred yards.

Speaker 4 (20:46):
Stop right there. We had this argument a couple of
weeks back where Kelly went off on Kirk Cousins being
a stud quarterback and I got a text, what did
you text me Sunday? Sunday?

Speaker 5 (20:55):
Yeah, after the game, I was in.

Speaker 4 (20:58):
The depths of my Bengals despair right there to make
me smile.

Speaker 6 (21:02):
So, okay, yeah, I mean they've they they're winning games
right now. Okay, I will tell you that. I just
because it's the seventh pick, so I'm allowed to do
what I want. I really considered the Broncos here because
they they've won three in a row. Uh, they look
really good. But the Falcons are finding ways to win
and they're finally finally getting all of these explosive, uh

(21:26):
offensive draft picks involved by Jon Robinson can run the ball?

Speaker 5 (21:30):
Did anyone know that?

Speaker 4 (21:31):
Not?

Speaker 6 (21:32):
For the last two years, we didn't. Kyle Pitts, he
he is an excellent tight end that's been underused for years.
So Kirk is figuring it out, and I mean, come back, drive, Kirk,
Come on, I like watching the Falcons. Maybe I'm just
a Kirk Cousins fans and and maybe I have to
just admit that. But anyway, quarterbacks, so I'm not alone there, okay.

Speaker 5 (21:55):
Number six?

Speaker 6 (21:57):
Number six, I have the Lions because they haven't made
they were off and I mean they haven't done anything.
I gotta kind of keep them there. They haven't lost
that position just yet. Number five I kept my Commanders
because I think we did exactly what we were supposed
to do against the team like the Browns. I think

(22:18):
we actually did it in exceptional fashion. But my one
through four is if these guys feel like a lock now.
In number four, I have the Ravens because if I
mean we're I'm gonna be realistic here. Everyone in the
world is saying if the Commanders beat the Ravens, that
means the expectation is not that the Commanders will beat
the Ravens. Because it's Lamar Jackson. He's never lost to

(22:40):
a rookie quarterback. The Ravens are a scary, mean team,
and once you add Derrick Henry to that, which they
did this season. How do you how do you pick
against them? And number three the Texans. They're figuring out
ways to win. They don't look excellent, they don't look great,
but they're winning. They don't look great, but they're winning. C. J.

(23:03):
Stroud is doing his thing. Number two the Vikings. They
are winning, they're winning. They look good. Sam Donald doesn't
look like Sam Donald. I would not call him Sam
Donald right now. I mean that's his name. I don't
want to be disrespectful, but he does not look like
who the Jets drafted in.

Speaker 5 (23:24):
Two thousand.

Speaker 4 (23:26):
Whatever it was.

Speaker 5 (23:27):
Yeah. Number one the Chiefs.

Speaker 4 (23:31):
This will be a stunter. Hang on.

Speaker 5 (23:32):
The Chiefs are the Chiefs. They win.

Speaker 6 (23:35):
They are on a like eleven game win streaks since
last season, including that little game called the Super Bowl.

Speaker 5 (23:43):
So I mean it's the Chiefs. It's the Chiefs world.

Speaker 6 (23:48):
In our poll this week of the undefeated teams or
the four and one and above teams, it's the Chiefs.
They're the best because they're the Chiefs. They still are
the Chiefs. And I hate I hate it, I really do.
I wish I'm ready for someone to take the crown.
But there's no one even competing right now.

Speaker 4 (24:08):
All right, so you went, you went, Falcons, Lions, Commanders,
Ravens after Ravens, after the commanders, Vikings, chiefs, chiefs. Okay, well,
I will tell you as I show, as I bring
you the correct poll. We don't. We don't differ much,
uh save for well really, actually only one spot is

(24:31):
where we differ in this uh, and that's at number seven.
I have the Buffalo Bills at number seven. I thought,
even though they lost in Houston, it was an impressive loss,
and if that makes any sense, but I think that
that's a team that has shown that right now that
they have lost two games in a row, uh, and

(24:55):
one was to a very good team in the Ravens.
They got dismantled, but I was impressed with the way
they bounced back. They fell behind to the Texans early
battled back. I think they have some offensive firepower that
we didn't think they were going to have this year.
And they sit atop the AFC East right now at
three and two. I think they're the favorites in that
division because I think the Jets are a mess, right

(25:17):
with all this Aaron Rodgers stuff. So I don't see
things changing there. I think that's Buffalo's division to win
right now, and I think they will, and I think
I think that's a very good football team Buffalo. I've
been impressed, even though even though they've lost too in
a row. I still like them better than a team
that is in first place in the NFC South. And
I just think that Buffalo's better, like you, I went

(25:39):
with the Lions at number six, and it's not because
they were off last week, but they're at three and one,
and with the way the Commanders are playing, and I
have them at number five, and I dropped him a
spot the Commanders. I had them at four last week.
I dropped him, done them five. And I'll tell you why,

(26:00):
cause I thought the win over Cleveland, I kind of
thought they had their foot on the throttle for a while.
I mean, I think they could have really. I mean,
it was bad enough for Browns fans. It was bad
enough the way it finished up, But it looked like
for a while like they were just simply toying with
with with the Browns on Sunday. Yeah, as bad as
Cleveland was, and so the way the Browns are struggling

(26:23):
right now, it was a very good win for the Commanders.
Don't misinterpt what I'm saying, but I thought the team
I have at number four had a much more impressive
win over a better football team, and that was the
Ravens overtime win over the Bengals. And that's why I
have the Ravens at number four. I thought that that
was a the way they won it, the things they
had to do to win the game. I mean, you

(26:44):
had Joe Burrow throwing five touchdown passes and throwing for
eight thousand yards, and the Ravens, despite coughing the football
up in the overtime, helped out by Zach Taylor, did
what they had to do to win the game, and
it was on the road against the And I still
think the Bengals are good. They're not a great team.
I still think they're a good team. They're bad defensively,

(27:07):
but offensively they're one of the best of the national
football I think. I think I think that win is
good enough to elevate them to number four and flip
them with the Commanders number three. Like you, I have
the Houston Texans, and I almost moved to Texans to
number two with that win over Buffalo, but it's hard
to go against Minnesota right now. I mean, when you're
five and oh, five and oh is five and oh?

(27:28):
What's the Bill Parcells line? You are what your record
says you are, and they're five and oh and give
them all the credit in the world for what they've
done to this part. You have to think at some
point the Sam Darnold bubble is going to burst, don't
you think at some point? But here they are at
five and oh, a big game with the Lions coming

(27:48):
up on the twentieth. This is their bye week coming up,
and then they get the Lions, and then they have
a short week where they go out at to Los
Angeles and face the Rams. Then they come back home
in a row for Jaguars Titans. So if they get
through these next two games, I'm blemish that would be
what that's six and oh, seven and eight oh nine? Oh,

(28:09):
they can very well be ten and oh going to
the Bears on November the twenty fourth. I mean, if
you if you're gonna base a lot of things on schedules,
you look at who they have coming up. Those are
all and plus they they host the Lions.

Speaker 6 (28:22):
I feel like the Lions is there. I mean that's
in my mind. I see them going nine to one
over this stretch, and I feel like the Lions are
are that loss. I actually think the Lions are because
the Lions have They've had rest at this point, and
I feel like they've They've been watching these other teams.
They've been watching people talk about the Commanders and the

(28:43):
Falcons even and the Broncos, and I think that they
know that to stay relevant in the NFC and also competitive,
they have to they have to shut this team down.

Speaker 4 (28:55):
I thought I had the floor. Okay, moving on anyway
back to Minnesota, but you make some good points. But again,
it wouldn't surprise me if they ruled to Chicago undefeated
at ten and zero, wouldn't surprise me at all. And
then after that, and I'm not saying they're gonna run
the table, but after that they have the Cardinals, Falcons,

(29:16):
Bears all in home. Wow. So I mean, yesually, we
gave you that top thirty two of the ESPN schedules, drinks,
and they had the Bills with the easiest remaining schedule,
the Bengals with the second easiest remaining schedule. This is
pretty easy, well easy again easy. He's not the right
word to use, but it's not as it's not as
grueling as the schedule some of these other teams play.

(29:39):
Their last regular season game is at Detroit. They close
up back to back North Division games, host the Packers,
and then go to Detroit. They have to go to Seattle.
Yet Minnesota's looking at a run here. This is a
fourteen and three football team. You're gonna base it on
schedule right now. Heck, it could even be fifteen to
two with what's ahead of them right now. They continue

(29:59):
to play the way they're playing. And the other thing
that's impressive to me about Minnesota in the five games
they played, they're not just beating people. They're beating people.
They're outscoring their opponents one hundred and thirty nine to
seventy six. They're not eging past anybody other than what
they had. They went over the Packers was thirty one
to twenty nine. The Winever the Jets a little misleading
at twenty three seventeen. But they're hammering people. I mean

(30:21):
they hammered the Texans thirty four to seven. Yeah, so
give them a graad there and then again a number
one again. You just you just can't pick against them,
the Kansas City Chiefs. You just can't do it, And
I agree with you. It's it's nauseating because I think
we're all kind of sick of the Chiefs. But until
somebody finds a way to beat them, we're all going
to have to continue to be walking around with upset

(30:42):
stomachs because unless you're a Chiefs fan, because this is
what they are, they're They may not, they may not
be the best overall team right now, but they have
certainly the best overall player in Patrick Mahomes, and that
makes a world of different.

Speaker 5 (31:00):
Best overall coach even, Yeah, I.

Speaker 4 (31:02):
Would, I would go there too. Sure, I think that's
that's a pretty fair statement. Chris Jones is playing spectacular football,
and it seems like whenever they lose somebody to an injury,
they just plug somebody else in there, which is remarkable.

Speaker 6 (31:14):
Who is scouting for this team? Their depth is actually actually,
don't even get me started. It's annoying. It's annoying.

Speaker 4 (31:23):
Yeah, So again, the correct Magnificent seven is bye Bill's
Lions Commanders, Ravens, Textans Vikings Chiefs. Kelly has for some
unknown reason, the Falcons, Lions Commanders, Ravens Textans Vikings Chiefs.
So there you go. That's this week's Magnificent Seven. Will
recap how our teams did on Monday, when we recap
everything on Overreaction Monday, and next Thursday, this time another

(31:44):
week and another edition of the Magnificent Seven. So we
look forward to that as well too. When we come back,
we'll look ahead to what happens in Eugene, Oregon on
Saturday night, Ohio State and Oregon in a titanic college
football struggle. It's pressbox, Fox Sports nine eighty wa.

Speaker 1 (32:20):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three, seven by three, one, six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WNA, and.

Speaker 4 (32:33):
Welcome back to the program three forty as we roll
on with you here on this Thursday afternoon. It is
the press box Fox Sports nine eighty wn E. It is,
without a doubt, the biggest game coming up this Saturday,
and I think probably to this date of the college
football season outside of Alabama Georgia, this one is probably
the biggest. Ohio State travels to Oregon on Saturday night

(32:53):
to face the Ducks. A lot of people I think
are going to be very interested to see how number
one Ohio State hands was its first severe road test.
Michigan State was basically a walk in the park. And
I think a lot of people also are very interested
to see how the Oregon Ducks handle their first very
tough Big ten tests. They've already played in Michigan State.
But again, as I said, that's not quite what you

(33:15):
would think as far as a Big ten test is concerned.
The Ducks have struggled in some of their non conference games.
I think a lot of people were caught a little
off guard when they struggled to beat Idaho. But here
they are unbeaten as they walk them in Ohio State.
Their head coaches Dan Landing, and he had a chance
to preview the Buckeyes team that his club will face
on Saturday night in Eugene.

Speaker 7 (33:35):
We are certainly excited for this opportunity, really, you know,
first off, want to tell our fans again how grateful
we are for this past weekend. Thought the atmosphere was
unbelievable for the Michigan State game. You know a lot
of things were able to go back and kind of
evaluate and thought our team played well in a lot
of ways, but certainly some opportunities for us to clean
up some things, but getting to play a great opponent

(33:56):
this week strong in all three phases you know as
a team when you watch them and you really don't
see a weakness, they're really they're really strong across the board,
and this will be a great challenge for us. And
I know our fans will be a great uh again
this weekend, so that'll that'll make that a fun atmosphere
for us.

Speaker 3 (34:10):
So you're in the left second world here.

Speaker 8 (34:12):
What are the challenges if we're bearing for an offense
that's so versatile, has so many talented players and has
obviously been rolling so far.

Speaker 7 (34:18):
Yeah, I think it's, you know, similar to what I've
talked about, you know with our team and what we
hope that we can be is you know, you can't
take away one thing knowing that you know something else
is a strength as well, right, and that they don't
They're not really.

Speaker 3 (34:30):
Limited, and what their strengths are.

Speaker 7 (34:31):
They're able to run the ball really well, They're able
to throw it well, talent talented at multiple positions, you know,
quarterback can run the ball as well, So that there's
a lot of things to present threats, and I think
you have to be sound and everything you come up with,
you know, be aware of any risks that you're going
to be taken and when is that risk worth it
or not, and be able to you know, play sound football.

Speaker 9 (34:51):
Right Morgan fans will very you know, they know about
Chip Kelly a lot. What have you seen from him
at Ohio State and what he's been able to do
with their offense.

Speaker 7 (34:59):
Well, I think he's always done a great job of
utilizing his personnel, you know, moving guys around and allowing
them to do things that they do really really well.
He always finds unique ways to run the ball. I
think that's you know, one thing that he probably doesn't
get enough credit for is his ability to run the
ball regardless situation.

Speaker 3 (35:13):
You know, and he's at UCLA.

Speaker 7 (35:14):
Last year they number one rushing team in our conference,
you know, for a lot of reasons, and it's because
of his ability to run the ball. But he does
a great job utilizing personnel, keeping on your toes, changing
the tempos, creating unique formations that you've never seen on
film before. So you always have to prepare for something
you haven't you know, really prepared for.

Speaker 10 (35:32):
As someone who's called the number one defense in the country.
What makes their defense unique in that way and how
they've been able to achieve the results they've gotten so far.

Speaker 7 (35:40):
It starts with them, you know, limit They limit explosive plays, right.
They do a great job of keeping the ball from
They play really physical in the front. You know, they're
able to stop the run. They're really sound and aggressive
at times, and coverage. But you know, they pitch a
lot of different looks at you as well. But it
starts they eliminate explosive plays. They play really sound football,
they have good overlap in their defense, They're able to

(36:01):
change the picture up. They have you know, really good
d linemen, good edges, uh, and then they're able to
cover you know, outside, so they create a lot of
challenges there.

Speaker 6 (36:09):
I know this isn't the first time you faced Chip Kelly,
but I'm curious if his success that he's had here
he had here in the past and that still kind
of resonates within the program at all?

Speaker 3 (36:17):
In what in what way?

Speaker 7 (36:19):
What do you mean just like the success that he had,
you know, ten fifteen years ago, does that's the kind
of people still talk about that?

Speaker 5 (36:25):
Did you learn about that when you got here?

Speaker 11 (36:26):
Do you remember that era of Oregon football?

Speaker 3 (36:28):
Yeah? I remember the teams that he had here.

Speaker 7 (36:30):
You know, I think everybody respects him as a football
coach and certainly the things that he was able to
accomplish while I was.

Speaker 4 (36:34):
Here back right right.

Speaker 12 (36:38):
Coach Ohio State has obviously two star wide receivers in
Smith in a buco What do you see from them
on film and what sort of challenges will those two
kind of present to the Oregon secondary this weekend?

Speaker 3 (36:47):
Yeah? Stop, go.

Speaker 7 (36:48):
You know, they can catch the ball and they can
turn it into a big play right away. You know,
it's not necessarily always averaged up the targets way down
the field. It's their ability to catch it in space
and get vertical. They block really really well in the perimeter,
and those guys have big catch radius. So you see
them win on balls that you you would call fifty
fifty balls. A lot of times they went on contested
you know, contested balls do a really good job thereat.

Speaker 13 (37:08):
What Matt think in your career you've coached in nine
different Top five matchups? Is there any common trade or
you know, I think you have to do in a
game in those games to win that's more heightened in
this type of atmosphere.

Speaker 7 (37:20):
I'd say, winning football is winning football. But I think
you always look when you're playing an opponent, you know, what,
what's some commonalities and games that they haven't had success
in and that you've had success in. Right, where are
those places where you can find strengths. What are the
pieces of the game that are going to matter the most?
You know, obviously explosive plays and takeaways is always something
that we focus on here, but you know, rushing game,
I think that matters. You know, ability to win on

(37:42):
critical downs, in critical situations, red area I think are
all really important.

Speaker 6 (37:46):
You and your players have just talked after every single opponent,
just still about it being Oregon versus Oregon.

Speaker 5 (37:52):
How is that mindset?

Speaker 12 (37:53):
Do you feel like kind of prepared this team for
this big moment this week?

Speaker 3 (37:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (37:58):
I think just the constant growth, you know, the folks
some what can we get better and if we attack
the things that we need to improve on, and that's
been our focus all year and you know, throughout the season,
I think you've seen us play better and better ball
in certain situations and attack things that we weren't as
good at the week before.

Speaker 9 (38:12):
Having knowledge of Ohio States running back coach, give you
any sort of advantage this week.

Speaker 7 (38:16):
I think that probably plays both ways. You know, like
last week we played against coaches that have been here before.
When we played UCLA, we played against coaches have been
here before. It makes you change your terminology, like you're
going to change the names of calls. Stuff before that
might have been a run for us is maybe now past.
Something that was going right is now maybe going left.
But that's pretty easy for our players to do it
once you you know, communicate that and change it. Certainly
he knows some of the things that we like to do.

(38:37):
On the same note, we certainly like know some of
the things that he likes to do. So, you know,
coach Locke did a great job for our program. He's
doing a great job for theirs now.

Speaker 8 (38:45):
After Friday's game, deal and talked about emphasizing protecting the
ball in the red zone that being a key. What
are some of the ways you do that in a
week to try to get those situations kind of figured out?

Speaker 7 (38:54):
Yeah, you play red red area football, right, you put
it down there, put the ball inside the twenty and
you know, you know, communicate what do we want that
to look like and if you expect to see it
in the game. You got to see it in practice first,
and you know he knows he wants those plays back.
You know that's that's It doesn't take anybody you know
special to recognize that he wants that back. But it's
about how can we coach that better and make sure
that those situations are avoided.

Speaker 3 (39:15):
I love James.

Speaker 10 (39:16):
How much more confident are you, Tosh the defensive staff
as a whole in the CB two position this year
compared to last year when obviously those Washington games where
they were able to exploit some things there differently than
perhaps this year or at least you hope for this year.
How much more confident that that spot and the depth.

Speaker 3 (39:32):
That you have there.

Speaker 7 (39:33):
I'm confident in our players. I like our team. I
like the guys that we get the opportunity to go
out there and play with. I think our guys play
competitive ball and this will certainly be the best challenge
for every single position on our on our team this week.

Speaker 12 (39:44):
I believe it's been back to back weeks now of
no sacks allowed. What do you think has been the
biggest difference in the old line in the last few
weeks that's made you feel confident and they're play heading
to this.

Speaker 7 (39:53):
Yeah, I think a lot of pieces add up to that.
You know, timing scheme is part of that. You know,
how we've adjusted some of the things that we.

Speaker 3 (39:59):
Do I think is a big par to that.

Speaker 7 (40:00):
And then the communication between the offensive line and the
quarterback has also been really.

Speaker 3 (40:03):
Important there back left Matt.

Speaker 13 (40:06):
A lot of attention has been on Jeremiah Smith, but
Mecca has been pretty during good too. Whi's just been
your impressions of him and challenging facing out of the
receiver of that caliber when they have two of.

Speaker 7 (40:15):
Them, Yeah, they got more than just two great whiteouts.
They've got several great whiteouts on their program. Certainly those
two are very very special. But you know, whether it's Tate,
I mean, there's a bunch of them on their team
that can go play winning football.

Speaker 3 (40:25):
So that's what makes this a challenge.

Speaker 7 (40:27):
You can't just say, Okay, I'm going to focus on
this one guy, because there's other guys on the field
that can beat you.

Speaker 9 (40:33):
Now, you guys talk about blocking out outside noise. Last week,
there's a lot of upsets, a lot of chaos and
college football, do you use that to your advantage to
kind of hone in and show your players why it's
so important to have a single game focus.

Speaker 7 (40:43):
I think our players are really aware of that. Our
messaging doesn't change necessarily week to week. You know, that's
been something that's been consistent for us through Fall Camp,
that it's about the guys in our room and what
we're able to focus on, not what everybody else is
talking about.

Speaker 4 (40:57):
Dan Landing, the head coach of the Oregon Ducks, and
ask question I think was interesting because you get that
a lot when you go towards a game like this,
and with everything that happened over this past weekend, Uh,
everybody I think has the thought that, uh, your focus,
maybe you can use those games as a little bit
of a oh, I don't know, a primer to kind

(41:18):
of keep your team's mindset knowing what's ahead for you
right now. And I think that that that part of
it is interesting, Uh, because of what, because of what
of waits, and because of the amount of attention that
centers on this game. It is, as I said, without
a doubt, the biggest game uh this weekend, and it's.

Speaker 5 (41:36):
It's up there.

Speaker 4 (41:37):
I think it's right up here with that with Georgia
Alabama as far as the importance to the schedule and
the college football Playoff. It has that kind of impact.
Well when it come back aware from the Ducks quarterback
Dylan Gabriel, it's the press box Fox Sports nine eight
w O and.

Speaker 1 (41:50):
AM get on the press box called Marty now at

(42:22):
nine to three seven by three, one six, one seven
zero the press box on Fox Sports ninet eighty WNI.

Speaker 4 (42:31):
Handerback with you here on this Thursday, Thursday. Yes it
is Thursday. Yes, I double check the calendar. It is
indeed Thursday with you right up until five o'clock the
Saffron And you heard from Dan Lanningham moment ago, the
head coach of the Oregon Ducks. While their quarterback is
a guy who many Heisman Trophy lists. He is one
of the well one of the favorites right now. His
first big test will be obviously on Saturday night against

(42:55):
that very stingy Ohio State defense. Dylan Gabriel took a
couple of moments to previ the Black Eyes defense.

Speaker 14 (43:01):
Yeah, just extremely talented, play extremely hard, and have you
know produced, So I guess when you combine all three
of those, you see it in game, and that's why
they're putting up the numbers they are, so, you know,
very intriguing to watch, and you know, they they've done
a great job.

Speaker 15 (43:21):
You guys had certainly big players when you put safeties
in conflict and they just have a lot of pass
over thirty yards and they've avoided that from what you've seen,
how they've been able to avoid avoid that so far.

Speaker 14 (43:31):
Yeah, I think they've just been really good on first
and second down, which allows them to do what they do,
and they're really good at it. So you know, like
I said, you know, when you help, you help yourself
out that way. You know, I think they all, you know,
all three levels work really well together, and I think
that's why they've they've been doing well.

Speaker 11 (43:51):
We've played in a couple of these highly ranked first
highly ranked games. Is there anything that's common in those
games that just have to happen that are key importance
for those games?

Speaker 14 (44:01):
Yeah, there's I mean, I think going back to the
basis of winning, you know for sure. But you know,
of course in these atmospheres as well, you know, experience
is a huge thing. I think you know, the turnover battle, uh,
you know, third downs, fourth downs, efficiency and then' scoring
in the red area. You know, I think when you

(44:21):
combine all those three, you can look at it and
usually that's you know, the main three categories of winning.
But yeah, I think just you know, naturally there's there's
a lot of energy and hype for everyone, but the
best you know teammate focusing and honing in on you know,
their job, you know, usually does a great job in
the game as well.

Speaker 1 (44:40):
What did you see and maybe learn from the two
interceptions this last week and what's the key to of
winning those players going forward?

Speaker 14 (44:47):
Yeah, just just being a lot smarter and smart aggressive
when in the red area. You know, I think, you know,
I got away with one against a c L a
very similar pass, and then I didn't get away with
it against Michigan State on that you know, first one
and the second one just you know, forcing it when
we could lift to you know, play another down or two.
And you know, I think that just keeps going back to,

(45:11):
you know, being smart, aggressive and finding the balance between that.

Speaker 15 (45:15):
It's okay, just talking a lot about getting the ball
out in two point five seconds or something. They're tracking
internally for you here, what's the importance of that for you?
And especially this week where they generate more pressure with
four than anyone in the country.

Speaker 14 (45:28):
Yeah, I think it's just decisiveness, you know, that combination
with you know, producing at a high level.

Speaker 4 (45:35):
You know, usually when you're getting the.

Speaker 14 (45:37):
Ball out on that time, you know exactly where to
both go and are playing you know, quarterback on time,
which helps everyone around, whether it's the receiver getting the
ball in the handquicker or you know, o line not
having to protect as long and then you know, not
sitting back there and holding the ball forever. So I
think it helps everyone and it's something you know, you
have to harp on.

Speaker 3 (45:57):
As an offense. I feel like the offensive line's improved
last few weeks.

Speaker 11 (46:00):
You haven't been hit nearly as off and haven't been
sacked the last couple of games.

Speaker 14 (46:04):
Yeah, I think they've been playing well, you know, and
been doing their job. And you know, obviously we've got
a bunch of belief and trust in them and in
what they do, so a lot of you know, kudos
good to them. They've they've been playing their butt off
and you know they they'll continue to as we you know,
maintain focus on keep getting better. That's been the main goal.

Speaker 11 (46:24):
I feel like you and Pondra kind of settled into
the communication that's required of the few positions really good.

Speaker 14 (46:30):
Yeah, And like I said, I think you know, early
on in spring we were able to do a lot
of mixed reps and with a lot of different centers,
which I think allows us to kind of find the
similarities and in trying to communicate, you know, in an
efficient way. So uh yeah, I think, you know, finding
that together has has been solid, but it's just continued

(46:51):
to play together that you know, titans, the bond.

Speaker 15 (46:53):
It has had a really big target share the last
couple of weeks once made him somebody that's been so
available and in some of your sol eye out.

Speaker 14 (47:00):
Just playing through progressions and getting to the right guys
and you know, Tests does a great job getting open.
But I do believe we've done a great job of
getting you know, everyone involved and trying to but also
when there's plays there and guys are open, getting them
the ball. So you know, it's credit to him, you know,
working on getting open as well and doing a great jobs.

Speaker 15 (47:21):
The feeling like doing the significance of this in just
in terms of again you were in up with Red
River last year in the stakes of that, but this
is for first place and the race for Indie and
getting there and the advantage that that comes with what
as a player, just what is it to play in
a game like that doesn't feel like to prepare for
something of this magnitude.

Speaker 14 (47:37):
Yeah, it's fun, you know, that's why you play the game.
That's why we all, you know, I want to be
a part of teams that you know, win and go
do you know, the to the last game of the season.
But you know, it's it's taking it one step at
a time, you know. If if there's anything I've realized
through you know, my five now six year of playing
is like you got to take it one week at

(47:58):
a time, you know, and this is the next step.
And of course the atmosphere, the you know, college football
in general, this is what you dream of. But you know,
you got a job to do. You gotta execute, you
gotta play hard and find a way to win. So
of course we live for it, and I think you
just have to go back to, you know, the basis

(48:20):
basics of the process and preparing the right way.

Speaker 4 (48:24):
That's still the Gabriel the head coach of the head coach.
It probably feels like the head coach they did the
quarterback of the Oregon Ducks. I like that last answer
about what it's like to play in a game like this.
I like the well, well you've been when you've been
doing this for five or six years. There we go again.
We were talking about that college athletics, my five on

(48:47):
my in my fifth or sixth year of doing this
right now, something like that, right yeah, something like amazing.
It's the press Box, Fox Sports nine eighty w on
e next hour, we're talking a little baseball with you.
We're here from Steven Vote. We'll hear from Alex Cobb
who was the Guardians. It was a picture yesterday and

tso tickets to give away next hour as well. It's

(49:09):

Speaker 1 (49:11):
A Welcome to the press Box with Marty Banister, the

(49:49):
latest on all local sports from Wright State to the
Dayton Flyers, from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals
and Browns. Called Marty now at nine three seven by three,
one six, one seven zero The press Box on Fox
Sports nine eighty WNA.

Speaker 7 (50:08):
Strong in all three phases. You know as a team
when you watch them and you really don't see a weakness.
They're really strong across the board, and this will be
a great challenge for us, and I know our fans
will be great.

Speaker 4 (50:18):
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning, we heard from him earlier
on his thoughts on Ohio State Welcome back to the
press box. It's Fox Sports nine eighty w O and
am Marty Banners to great to have you with us
here on this Thursday as we roll on. Kelly B's
producing the program and you have us for the next
hours we talk sports with you. Baseball in two hours,
the Cleveland Guardians will try to keep their season alive

(50:39):
in the America League Division Series as they take on
the Detroit Tigers, trailing two games to one. Yankees and Royals. Tonight,
Kansas City tries to keep their season alive as they
trail in that series two games to one. The first
pitch in that one will be a little bit after
eight o'clock or so out in Kansas City. So there
is a busy schedule of games. Along with that, there

(51:01):
is a lot of college football. There is also an
NFL game on tap for tonight as well as we
have the usual Thursday game tonight to this is an
interesting one NFC West matchup San Francisco and Seattle. And
suddenly the forty nine ers have kind of become they've
kind of fallen into that middle of the pack where
everybody else was at. I think going into the year,

(51:23):
a lot of people thought the forty nine ers would
be a Super Bowl contender. And I'm not riding them
off from that, but what are They're two to three
right now? Are the forty nine ers? Christian mccaffery's been injured,
Deebo Samuel's been hurt, They've got some defensive problems they're
trying to shore up from an injury standpoint. Not quite
the juggernaut that I think a lot of folks thought

(51:44):
they were going to be after getting to the Super
Bowl last year.

Speaker 6 (51:46):
Yeah, absolutely, a lot of questions. People are not sure
if it's brock perty is he hitting his ceiling? Is
the defense gonna be the forty nine ers defense that
we've seen four and I mean otherwise, injuries on top
of injuries on top of injuries, right.

Speaker 4 (52:08):
And they were impressive when they opened the season. They
put the Jets away relatively easily, then back to back
losses to the Vikings and Rams and be a bad
New England team, and then lost to the Cardinals twenty
four to twenty two, which I think caught a lot
of people off guard over this past weekend. And now
they get the Seahawks and then after that Kansas City. Yep,

(52:29):
so they play the Chiefs, so in a Super Bowl
rematch everybody likes to say. So that'll be on the
what day is that? That is the twentieth, and that
is the four to twenty five game in the four
twenty five window on Sunday the twentieth, So that'll be
the JV game. The Bengals Browns game will be the
varsity game that day at one o'clock. I say that

(52:51):
in great jest. So anyway, as we as as we
move along here in the press box, A right State
has announced that they're season opening basketball game with Kentucky
on Monday, November the fourth, will be a game played
in front of a national television audience on ESPNU. It
will tip at seven o'clock that night, as Clint Sergeant's

(53:14):
run as the Raiders head coach begins. A couple of
first year head coaches going at one another, Clint Sergeant
and Kentucky first year head coach Mark Pope. Wright State
and Kentucky have previously met five times, most recently during
the twenty fifteen to sixteen campaign, and this will be
the second time the Raiders and Wildcats have opened the
season against one another, the last time nineteen ninety two
to ninety three. Wright State has three regular season ESPN

(53:38):
linear games lined up. That means the games that are
not on ESPN plus the streaming system. So the Horizon
leguill announce its ESPN wild Card dates and game options
for this season at a coming date. Wright State returns
eight players from last season while adding six newcomers, three
freshmen and three transfers. Brandon Nol Alex Hubricks both the

(54:00):
average double digits. Nole's eight rebounds per game led the
team last year. And the Raiders opening again at Kentucky
on Monday, November fourth. So that's your basketball update for
you again. Baseball coming up in a couple of hours.
Guardians and the Detroit Tigers. Our fan polls are up
for you this afternoon and ask you a couple of questions.

(54:21):
Number one, what does the loser of the Ohio State
and Oregon game Saturday night have to do to go
on and make the College Football Playoff twelve team field.
Do they have to win out or simply get to
the Big Ten Title game? Sixty two percent of you
say they just have to get to the Big Ten
Title game right now with winning out at the thirty
seven percent, we're also asking you today Kansas City, Minnesota, Washington,

(54:42):
and Houston are each four and one right now. Four
and one are better right now in the NFL? What
is the best of those four teams right now? Kansas
City getting fifty percent of the vote, Houston and Washington
each getting twenty five percent of the vote. Kelly, zero
for your beloved commanders, no one has voted for them.
Uh the nudes checks in, Kelly B. I can't believe
the disrespect that no one is voting for Washington after

(55:04):
what they've done so far. But I will continue that
disrespect to vote for Houston. They haven't looked the best
with all the talent on that team, they are potentially
the best team right now. So not a lot of
love for your commanders right now.

Speaker 6 (55:17):
I think a lot of people are still shocked. We
are in we're this Okay, we're in week six and
people are still talking about the Washington commanders. So this
is new for me. This is new, I think for
the world, and it's gonna take some getting used to.
But if all goes according to plan, hopefully you guys

(55:38):
will be sick of us too.

Speaker 4 (55:39):
You know, I don't think that anybody can get any
more sick than they are of the Kansas City Chiefs. Yeah,
I think with and again it may sound like it
sour grapes. Yeah, uh, you know, you're you're you're just
you just hate the fact that they're that good and

(56:01):
they continue to roll right along. I think it was
an impressive thing. We referenced it during our picks on
The Magnificent Seven during the first hour of the show.
I think sometimes it gets overlooked just how good a
coach Andy Reid really is. When you have a guy
like a Patrick Mahomes, you just kind of assume that

(56:21):
your coaching kind of takes a back seat a little
bit because this guy bails you out of so many issues.
But the point about Andy Reid just plugging different people
in and watching them go on and do things. That's
what the Patriots used to do. Remember Bill Belichick was
coaching the Patriots, and yes, much like Bill Belichick, Andy
Reid has a great quarterback. Of course, Bill Belichick, in

(56:43):
case you have forgotten, had a pretty good quarterback, a
guy the named a Brady. But they could plug it
just about anybody into that lineup and they would go
from obscurity to having an all Pro season.

Speaker 5 (56:56):
Made stars, They made stars. Julian Adaman, Wes Welker.

Speaker 4 (57:00):
These are when he left the Bengals, his career like
it was pretty much in the in the tank. And
what does he do. He has a couple of great years,
puts a Super Bowl ring on and away we go.
It's just remarkable how some franchises can do that, how
some head coaches can do that. Is it the system?
Is it what they run? Is it the and you

(57:22):
hear this Urby's line? Is it the culture in these
franchises could be a lot of those things. Of course,
when you're stacking Super Bowl trophies up in the hallway,
I think a lot of guys will go that extra
effort because they know they have a chance to hold
one of them.

Speaker 5 (57:39):
Yeah, yeah, to get their own ring. I think that,
I absolutely think that.

Speaker 4 (57:43):
But there.

Speaker 6 (57:45):
It does come a point where there was no Super Bowls.
You know, you're in New England, you got the one
hundred and ninety ninth pick starting because your quarterback got hurt,
and nobody thought this is we're about to make a dynasty.
We just there was a culture there that was able
to develop that sort of talent. And I think I

(58:06):
think that these kind of moments where you have like
a Belichick and a Brady Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid
are kind of like lightning, because you do need that
coach that's willing to push the envelope a little and
you need a quarterback who's not only going to buy in,
but also be smart enough to know how to implement

(58:28):
what the coach is talking about. On the field, the
coach is never playing the game, Andy Reid isn't taking
any snaps, so Patrick Mahomes has to be able to
be kind of the coach on the field. And I
think when you have that, when you have a quarterback
and a coach that in sync, that's lightning. That doesn't

(58:50):
happen often. We've conversely, we've seen a lot of organizations
staffs ruin talent. I mean, you talk about the Browns
people say that Cleveland is where you go to kill quarterbacks.
Not literally, but if you want to destroy your quarterback career,

(59:11):
you put on the Browns jersey.

Speaker 5 (59:13):
I don't know why it is that.

Speaker 4 (59:14):
Way so far, so far, that hasn't been proven wrong.

Speaker 5 (59:17):
Has it exactly?

Speaker 6 (59:19):
So it's and those are different coaching staffs, those are
so that's the culture that's beyond just one guy's system.

Speaker 4 (59:27):
That's an interesting topic. I think when you when you
look at it, how some franchises, no matter what they do,
they just can't get out of their own way when
they I mean how many times? And Browns fans are
probably sick of hearing this, but how many times have
you thought, well, this guy's the answer. No, this guy's
the answer. We thought Baker Mayfield they thought was the answer.

(59:51):
A lot of Browns fans, for some unknown reason, thought
Johnny Manziel was the answer. I still don't understand that
the guy who was five feet ten inches tall, about
one hundred night pounds, dripping wet, and you could kind
of tell that that guy, I mean, the issues with him,
what's that Dave lapham line, He's got more issues than
a magazine stand And you could tell coming in that
that just wasn't going to work. I don't think anybody

(01:00:13):
thought any different about that. But that failed. I mean,
you go and you can just start. I'm not going
to start listing all their quarterbacks. We don't have that
kind of time in the show. But they just for
whatever reason they had just have not been able to
get a quarterback in there with any staying power, with
any talent, with any lengthy and how do you miss

(01:00:37):
so often on that position? The Bears, well they did,
they did do it. Now they got it right. We
we think, Kayla Williams, they got I think they got
it right. I think they got it's.

Speaker 5 (01:00:50):
I mean, we're hope. I'm hope.

Speaker 6 (01:00:51):
I honestly at this point, I'm hoping. I am rooting
for and honestly I want to see the Browns get
out of the dumps as well. I would love to
see more parody in the league. I don't want horrible franchisees.
I want every single NFL game to be good. I
don't even work for the NFL. I just love football.
So everyone get better, so the games get better.

Speaker 4 (01:01:11):
You know, well, we'll think about all I'm saying, yeah,
but think about it too. As I said, how you
can continually swing and miss in the ability to try
to get your team to a certain level. And let's
be honest, Cincinnati, they're as guilty as the next franchise.
If you go back over the years of walk, I mean,

(01:01:32):
no one thought Andy Dalton was going to become what
Andy Dalton became. I remember the first game he started
against Cleveland, what was at twenty ten, twenty eleven I
think it was, and we were just hoping they didn't
get shut out. Yeah, well they won the game and Dalton,
he wasn't great, but he got him through it. And
he just again, as we've talked before, he was a
good enough quarterback, not enough to get you so far,

(01:01:53):
but good enough to get you there. And then you
had to have some things fall your way. But before that,
I mean, it was a Key Smith, it was Jeff Blake,
it was I mean, Carson Palmer is You can say
what you want about Carson Palmer, but you can go
back into the nineties when they swung and miss at quarterbacks.

(01:02:13):
Seemingly every draft they thought they had the right guy
didn't do it. They got lucky with Joe Burrow because
they were the number one pick they had that, they
had that opportunity, and they got that one right. There's
no doubt there. But for most other situations, it's it's
it's been a swinging a mess.

Speaker 6 (01:02:33):
Maybe maybe the way to figure this out is to
look at the teams that have been great at finding
their quarterbacks, Like I mean, obviously the Green Bay Packers.
They can find a quarterback and they'll they'll make that
man sit for ninety nine years, but when he starts,
he's ready, He's ready.

Speaker 5 (01:02:54):
I don't know that's what they do.

Speaker 4 (01:02:59):
I think it's interesting topic. Well, we're gonna keep that
discussion going when we come back about some of these
franchises that just just can't get it right and how
they just, as I said, continually swing and miss. It's
just remarkable how you do that. Four seventeen The press
box rolling along here on this Thursday, Fox Sports nine
eighty WNA.

Speaker 1 (01:03:44):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
three seven by three one six, one seven zero the
press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WNA.

Speaker 4 (01:03:56):
And we roll on here on this Thursday, four twenty
the time here the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty
w O and I I'm Marty manister Kelly Be he's
producing in the program. We were involved a little bit
of a discussion about franchises and how they can continually
swing and miss, if you will, at trying to fill
what is really the most important position on a football field.
And I don't know that you can really make that
argument against that, and that is, of course, the quarterback position.

(01:04:20):
The Browns are notorious for getting it wrong and looks
like they've got it wrong again, and I just it's
just remarkable to me how that can continue to happen.
I mean, somewhere down the line, every franchise picks right,
makes the right choice. The Kelly's Commanders they got it
right apparently, I mean, Jayden Dan, I mean, I think

(01:04:43):
it's fair to say, don't you yet that they that
they that they got it right this time? Oh yeah,
I think Dallas. You look at Dallas, I mean with
Dak Prescott, say what you will, and what is he
third or fourth highest paid quarterback in the league right now?
I think it's it's fair to say that they got
it right. Although I put him in the Andy Dalton

(01:05:05):
category maybe a little obviously talent wisee I think he's
probably a little better than Andy Dalton. But he's a
good enough quarterback. He's good enough to get you so far,
and that's about it. He's proven in the playoffs he
can't get you over the hump. He's proven that. And
that's certainly something that the Cowboys have are struggling with

(01:05:26):
right now because he is obviously a very talented quarterback.
Is it the people around him? Is it the coaching?
Is it a combination of all? Is it neither? Where
does it land? You look at the teams right now,
Let's just go buy WY Division, AFC, East Well, Muffalo.
Obviously their quarterback position is set. It's Josh Allen. They're
okay there the Jets. How many more years do you

(01:05:48):
go with Aaron Rodgers? What is? How far do you do?
You keep pushing this? I don't I mean he isn't
he forty Yeah he's forty one?

Speaker 6 (01:05:58):
Yeah, that's this is maybe a year, maybe one more year.

Speaker 4 (01:06:03):
Is he tom Brady esque in his ability? No?

Speaker 6 (01:06:07):
Here's my thing about Aaron Rodgers. And this is the
part that I don't understand why no one talks about
Tom Brady famously talked about like never eating steak, coffee,
all of these other things. To keep his body in
position enough to be.

Speaker 5 (01:06:27):
To be.

Speaker 4 (01:06:30):
To be healthy. Yeah, to be able to.

Speaker 5 (01:06:33):
Play the game at this at this age. No one
else is doing that. Aaron Rodgers most certainly is not.

Speaker 4 (01:06:40):
No, no, he's not. So there you have that situation
with Rogers again. I don't know how long the Jets.
I don't even know what the deal is, what the
contract is for Rogers, but I would think maybe another
couple of years. But I mean, when was the last
time they had a really great quarterback there in New Yor?

(01:07:02):
That might not be too far off the off the spot.

Speaker 5 (01:07:04):
No, I'm I'm being one hundred percent.

Speaker 4 (01:07:06):
I mean, oh no, I mean I'm not. Can you
name yeah, can you name a great Jets quarterback go
back over the years, No, No, other than I mean
somebody that has had a a great career Miami, what
kind of situation are they? And now with Tua because

(01:07:28):
of the consistent problems he has unfortunately with concussions. You
don't know Derek May in New England, he's finally going
to get a start this weekend, but you don't know
what he is.

Speaker 6 (01:07:40):
Yeah, we don't know. We don't know what Drake is
going to be. We don't know, and I mean we
didn't know. We like, we had some concerns about Caleb
early in the season. I think because of the bias
of of c J. Stroud. Usually we let rookie quarterbacks
struggle for honestly a whole year. We usually give them
a season to figure it out unless they look horrible,

(01:08:03):
which has happened, but it has I feel like I'm
not sure, Like I don't know if I can say
that CJ. Stroud is because of the Texans, right, I
don't know if I can say even someone like Kirk Cousins,
he came from Washington. Washington is not known for developing quarterbacks.

Speaker 4 (01:08:20):
I think quarterback stud quarterbacks.

Speaker 5 (01:08:22):
He is a stud quarterback.

Speaker 6 (01:08:24):
We's he was making history five hundred yards.

Speaker 5 (01:08:28):
Who's doing that? Anyway?

Speaker 6 (01:08:30):
Come back when come back Kirk? Okay, you like that.
I'm a Kirk fan. I can't help it.

Speaker 4 (01:08:38):
Yeah, that's painfully obvious. So yeah, but if you look
at that, you go to the FC North, the Ravens
are set, super set, nothing nothing changes there. The Bengals
are set. There are other issues, but there's no issues there.
And then you have the Steelers in the browns now
the Steelers. I still don't know. I mean, there's justin fields. Now,

(01:08:59):
there's rumblings, did the Steelers Steeler fans want Russell Wilson
now to start?

Speaker 5 (01:09:03):
Well, Tomlin says.

Speaker 6 (01:09:07):
Tomlin said the door was a jar for Russell Wilson
to start.

Speaker 4 (01:09:12):
Russell Wilson is what thirty six thirty seven. So so
their their quarterback situation is not if you look long term,
I don't think it's settled by any shime. And again,
we know Cleveland, we know what that is. We just
don't just don't know how much longer it's going to last.

Speaker 6 (01:09:30):
Yeah, But the thing is the Steelers and the Browns
at different times are able to win without having that
name brand quarterback, without someone that they super trust under center.
And and that's that's a whole other issue.

Speaker 4 (01:09:47):
Then when did the Browns do that.

Speaker 6 (01:09:49):
Last season with everyone and their mom under center? They
played with nineteen different quarterbacks and made I.

Speaker 4 (01:09:57):
Think you but I think you knew. I mean, let's
be honest, Joe Flacco fit Kevin Stefanski system to a t.
I mean just was the perfect fit for what he
wants to do offensively. And I don't know if it's
because of his age or whatever it was, they decided
to let him go. What we're seeing now, maybe it

(01:10:18):
was a mistake because he's had some good games with Indianapolis.
But again, Flacco's won a Super Bowl too. Let's keep
that in mind too. If you look at let's go
down the division, so you look at AFC South, Well,
we know Houston is set. There's no no issues there
with Stroud. Indianapolis calls Anthony Ridgardson seeming like he's hurt
every week.

Speaker 5 (01:10:36):
Every week.

Speaker 4 (01:10:37):
You don't know, Titans Tennessee, Titans, Will Levice, No, you
don't know Jacksonville. No. You thought you were set with
Trevor Lawrence.

Speaker 5 (01:10:47):
But like you were set, they will not be set.

Speaker 4 (01:10:50):
Right. AFC West, well, we all know they answered to
question number one. Kansas City. With that, that's done, Denver
Boe Nix is starting to develop into a very good
NFL quarterback after some struggles out of the gate. A. Yeah,
the Los Angeles Chargers, justin Herbert, I mean, everybody keeps
waiting for him, just like Trevor Lawrence, just like Trevor Lawrence.

Speaker 6 (01:11:14):
Just like and and now you've got you've got a
coach that everyone in everybody's league in college and the
pros and probably international flag football. Everybody respects this coach.
This coach has been known to have winning programs. So
if Justin Herbert at this point can't get in line,
and I actually feel the same way about Trevor Lawrence,

(01:11:34):
Doug Peterson is an exceptional coach. So I don't think
that if if these guys can't mold you.

Speaker 5 (01:11:41):
Maybe you're not moldable. But then I don't know. Give
him to Andy Reid, give him to.

Speaker 4 (01:11:45):
Kyle Shannon, right, see what happens. Then we'll see, yeh,
see what happens. The Las Vegas Raiders again, I mean,
is Gardner Minshew the or eight now and now and
forever quarterback? I don't absolutely not. I don't think so.
You look at the NFC East, while again the questions
answered in Washington, we know that the Dallas Cowboys, I mean,

(01:12:08):
it's Dak Prescott. Do we hear any different Philadelphia? You
thought it was settled. Yeah, But.

Speaker 5 (01:12:17):
If you look at Jalen Hurt's numbers, they look like
they look like Justin.

Speaker 4 (01:12:23):
He looks like he looks like an average quarter He
looks like Justin fields. The New York Giants. Obviously they're a.

Speaker 5 (01:12:28):
Message and they're upset about.

Speaker 4 (01:12:29):
It, and probably Daniel Jones will probably throw for four
thousand yards on Sunday Night against the Penguins. In the
NFC North, Sam Darnold has become a story. But is
he Are you just playing with Are you playing with
house money with this guy right now?

Speaker 5 (01:12:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (01:12:46):
Because they are, because that's why they brought in JJ.
JJ was supposed to be their guy.

Speaker 4 (01:12:52):
Detroit. I think they're happy. Green Bay is Setigo is
Chicago is set.

Speaker 5 (01:12:59):
For the first time in my life.

Speaker 4 (01:13:02):
Right in the NFC South, the Atlanta Falcons have a
stud court.

Speaker 5 (01:13:05):
They have a stud quarterback.

Speaker 4 (01:13:09):
Of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I think all of the
sudden Baker Mayfield I think has dropped an anchor there. Yeah.
I mean he's playing well, really well. I think. I
mean what he was that one year he played for
like five teams in a spanner like two months.

Speaker 6 (01:13:24):
Or rams the Panthers, he was just bouncing around.

Speaker 4 (01:13:30):
But he I think I think he's just I think
he's established himself as the guy there.

Speaker 5 (01:13:34):
And they like him.

Speaker 6 (01:13:35):
I think that so much of Baker's saying has been
confidence when he came in he was confident, then he
couldn't get it done immediately, and then he was not
less confident. I think they helped instill some confidence in
him when they won that when they got to the playoffs,
won that jurity.

Speaker 4 (01:13:51):
Maturity, maturity, I think a lot of maturity. They're sure
the Carolina Panthers, that's a disaster, right, so they're sad.
They fall into that kind of same category like the Brows.
He just can't get it right. Even when they went
to the super Bowl that one year, it was still
that was a while. They were a journeyman quarterback. The

(01:14:12):
NFC West Seattle Geno Smith has I think developed into
I don't know that iyboy thought he was going to
be what he has become there. The Arizona Cardinals Kyler Murray, Yeah,
I think that they're okay there, And that said, they.

Speaker 5 (01:14:27):
Need they need a lot of other things. I don't
know what's going on in Arizona.

Speaker 4 (01:14:31):
No doubt. The forty nine ers with Brock Purty, I think.
I mean, I like a lot of people have criticisms
of him.

Speaker 6 (01:14:39):
I like him, so would you'd invest in him, you'd
pay him? He's because he's up for a contract this year.

Speaker 4 (01:14:44):
I would. I would absolutely, I would absolutely at the
Los Angeles Rams.

Speaker 6 (01:14:49):
They need a new guy. They got an old guy
right now. So I think so Matt stafford is is
thirty eight, he's the.

Speaker 4 (01:14:56):
One and four. Yeah, they're one and four. So yeah,
but again, you look at all that and what we did.
We just went through thirty two teams in the span
of about seven eight minutes. And I think of those
thirty two, what would you put the percentage at that
are pretty well set? Maybe thirty eighty five percent or
pretty well set at quarterly eighty five percent. Well, let mean,
we'll think about it. Who go back real quick on

(01:15:17):
that list? Who's not? Carolina's not? That's one? Who else
can we go back and say is not set? The
Giants that's two? The Raiders I think has to be three,
don't you. Yeah, definitely, Tennessee definitely. Okay, Cleveland they're looking
and then I think maybe the whole AFC East, say

(01:15:40):
for Buffalo.

Speaker 5 (01:15:41):
Yeah, that's like nine teams are not set.

Speaker 4 (01:15:44):
Nine out of thirty two.

Speaker 5 (01:15:45):
Yeah, okay, that's seventy seventy five eighty percent.

Speaker 4 (01:15:49):
Okay, I'll give you that.

Speaker 5 (01:15:50):
Yeah, I'm not good at math, Marty come on here.

Speaker 4 (01:15:53):
I forgot I've got Pittsburgh as well. I forgot pittsgah Pittsburgh.
Yeah yeah to me, that that's that's fascinating because you
think everybody said it's the it's the it's it's a
quarterback league. Oh not everybody has that guy though.

Speaker 6 (01:16:06):
Look if you look at the numbers, if you can't
run the ball right now, you're not scoring unless you're
the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaker 4 (01:16:13):
Actually stop, you're not stopping people either. Yeah, all right,
four thirty three is a time little baseball. When we
come back, we'll hear from Alex Cobb, the Guardian starter
yesterday and manager Stephen Vote. It's the press Fox Fox
Sports nine eighty WA.

Speaker 1 (01:16:35):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three seven by three one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty w.

Speaker 4 (01:16:47):
O eight and we're back with you. Four to thirty
seven is a time as we roll along here in
the press box Fox Sports nine eighty w A. I'm
Marty Banister. We're glad you're with us here this afternoon
as we continue along with you right up until five o'clock.
Base ball in about an hour or so, Guardians and
Tigers Game five, Game four rather of the American League
Division series between those two yesterday, the Tigers won, blanking

(01:17:10):
the Guardians three nothing. Alex Cobb was the pitcher of
record in the game for the Guardians, and after the
game yesterday, he talked about his start and how he
was just unhappy he could not do enough to give
his team an opportunity to win the game yesterday against
the Tigers.

Speaker 16 (01:17:26):
I mean, I think the whole game there's just you know,
maybe just a little bit off location wise, pitch shapes,
just you know, not biting as much as I'd like,
not getting the swings a miss so putting the ball
in play and then you know, put the ball on
the ground and they found some holes in that first inning,
and then you know, probably not pleased with the fact that,

(01:17:49):
you know, I doubled up on the same pitch to
Rogers and gave him a chance to put the barrel
on it and start out the ending with the double
and that third. So really that's that's probably the uh,
the toughest one for me. But you know, early on
it was just not getting the swing as of misses
that I needed. I mean, I think I think to

(01:18:09):
some degree, there's probably a little bit more adrenaline in there,
and you know you're missing your location a touch. But
you know, I I did everything I could. I did
two SIM games where I felt really good in them,
and you know, I'm really really thankful that the organization
thought enough of me to go out there and and

(01:18:31):
and and handle that type of layoff. And you know,
I just I feel bad I didn't I didn't put
some zeros on the board. I think right nowadays, for sure,
I haven't really thought much of that. Uh you know,
going into the day, I had you know, a lot
going on in my mind to to try to stay
sharp and focused. And then right now, you just, you know,

(01:18:53):
you feel feel a little bit defeated going you know,
going down two to one in a series. And you know,
but I'm sure at some point I'll be I'll be
looking back and thinking it was pretty cool. But I
know it was awesome to be back out on a
mounta in the postseason and you know feel that energy

(01:19:17):
that you really you don't feel that anywhere else.

Speaker 4 (01:19:22):
The innings allowed three hits, gave up a couple of runs,
both earned walk one, struck out two through forty one
pitches in the game. A total of thirteen pitchers were
used in that game yesterday, seven by the Guardians a
half dozen by the Tigers. The Tigers starter lasted an
inning in the game yesterday, which again when you talk

(01:19:42):
about the importance that Kayder Montero was the starter for
the Tigers yesterday. When you get to these postseason games,
there's a baseball term called Johnny whole staff, where anybody
who's got an arm who's available to keep your season alive,
you're going to use them in situations, and the Guardians
and Tigers certainly did that yesterday, with Detroit winning by

(01:20:04):
the score of three to nothing to go up two
games to one in that series. Afterwards, Guardians manager Stephen
Vote also thought that cob gave them a chance to
win again. It was just a situation where the Guardians'
bats once again failed his team.

Speaker 3 (01:20:19):
To get the matchup.

Speaker 2 (01:20:21):
Just yeah, we kind of knew, you know, back of
our minds, that that's they could have done that, you know,
and given the situations that we were in, they were
high leverage, and so we thought that was the opportunity
to take our shot. Both with Noel and Fry Cohen
on the back end, those were high leverage situations, chances
for us to get.

Speaker 3 (01:20:41):
The matchup, just we just didn't come through.

Speaker 2 (01:20:44):
We meet constantly before during constantly talking about you know,
when will we go, what's the situation if we're gonna
do it, versus if we're gonna hold.

Speaker 3 (01:20:54):
We prepare very.

Speaker 2 (01:20:55):
Very much for these situations. So nothing that happened today
caught us off guard. We were prepared for all of it.
We took our shots when we had the opportunity to
put some runs up, and like I said, we placed
bets and then just didn't come through.

Speaker 3 (01:21:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:21:09):
I mean, when you're playing from behind, the other team
has the opportunity to get you handcuffed. But you know,
outside of maybe a couple at bats, I felt like
we had the advantage in almost every situation today. We
had traffic going. I thought we did a great job
setting the table. We just weren't able to come through
with a big hit. You can go down that road
all you want. At the end of the day, all
you can control is hitting the ball hard, and David
did that, and you know, credit Veiling for making a

(01:21:32):
great play being in the right spot.

Speaker 3 (01:21:33):
And yeah, again I.

Speaker 2 (01:21:35):
Felt like we had pretty good at bats at times
and then in other times we didn't. But overall, you know,
got we gave ourselves an opportunity to score a lot
of runs today, just weren't able to come with the
big hit in score and position.

Speaker 4 (01:21:46):
The grab that he was talking about was the stab
by Matt Urling of a scorching line drive that really
would have busted the game open for the Guardians at
that point, but again hit and Verling made a heck
of a play. Of all the Guardians who are struggling
at the play, Jose Ramirez stands out because of what

(01:22:07):
he's done throughout the regular season and the key to
the Guardians offense that he's been. Stephen Kwan is hitting
the cover off the ball in the series. He's hitting
four fifty five. Had three hits yesterday in the game.
The Guardians had five as a team. Kwan had three
of them. But they just have not just have not
been able to generate any kind of offense after that

(01:22:28):
first game, after that, really that first inning again they
scored five runs in that first inning and since then,
I mean, and again another baseball term you here this
time of year, and it's it's very accurate. Good pitting,
good pitching stops good hitting, and here we are. And
that's where the Tigers and Guardians find themselves in this series.
And the Guardians, I would think if they can get

(01:22:50):
out of the gate quick in this one tonight at
six o'clock, hit a couple of runs on the board
early from a confidence standpoint, it would be enormous for them. Again,
when you've gone two straight games out scoring a run,
your offense has struggled mightily against very good pitching, and
I would think that would be enormous for the Guardians
tonight because keep in mind, if they do rally and

(01:23:13):
win this game, guess who they get in Game five?
Treiak Schooble getst the baseball back for Tigers. I don't
know that what my season hins are gonna having to
beat that guy now, But that's what But all you
asked for was the shot. You just want to get there,
and that's what the Guardians will try and do. But again,

(01:23:36):
I think it's imperative that they get some runs early
in this game, in an hour and twenty minutes or so,
to just kind of jump start the offense a little bit.
I mean they did, and well, see what happened in
a game one, they scored five runs and bytom of
the first and cruised and since then they've they've scored
two runs in the series and that would be I
think so big for them if they're able to do
it again. First pitch is slated four six eight. When

(01:23:58):
we come back, we'll give away some tickets to the
c Trans Siberian Orchestra at the Another Center on Saturday,
December the seventh. It's the press box. We continue along
with you Fox Sports nine eighty W.

Speaker 1 (01:25:01):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three seven by three one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine to eighty WN, and.

Speaker 4 (01:25:14):
We're back with you here on this Thursday afternoon remaining
moments of the program. Glad you've been with us here
this afternoon. Kelly B producing the program and we are
glad she's with us here today. She'll be off tomorrow
as always Tomorrow, are in our program again. It's our
usual Friday shortened the program. We have our iHeartRadio High
School Football Blitz coming your way at four fifteen tomorrow
where we get you ready for week number eight of

(01:25:36):
the high school football season, and we are the playoffs
started like Friday Night like start Friday Night November the
first insane Yeah, and that the month run to the
state championships in Canton once again this year this program
weben eight from the Tom Betson Hall of Fame Stadium
in Canton during the high school FOOTBA playoffs. We had
a great time up there last year broadcasting the show

(01:25:59):
Thursday and Friday of championship game day, and we'll be
back up there again this year as well too with
the program, So looking forward to that. Here for you
in the press box, Fox Sports nine to eight w
a couple of fan polls we have up for you
this afternoon, remaining moments that we have in the program.
One of those has gone fine on in fact, both
of them have. We asked you today, what does the
loser of the Ohio State and Oregon game Saturday night

(01:26:21):
have to do to make the College Football Playoff twelve
team field get to the Big Ten title game? At
sixty six percent of the vote, so I don't dis
wholeheartedly disagree with that. I think eleven and that would
be eleven win or lose. Let's say the worst you
could be would be eleven and two going towards the play.

(01:26:42):
I think eleven and two runner up in the Big ten,
that'd be good enough to get you in that large berth.
I would think even with a loss on Saturday Night,
I'll give you that. Yeah, I think that would be
I think that's very attainable. We also asked you today
there are four teams right now in the NFL who
own records of four and one or better. They are
Kansas City, Minnesota, Washington, and Houston. We just simply wanted

(01:27:02):
to know what you thought of those teams, which one
is the best right now? And really no great surprise
here in Kansas City at fifty six percent of the vote,
followed by Houston and Minnesota. No one voted for the
Washington Commanders.

Speaker 6 (01:27:14):
Kelly, I apologize, but honestly, I'm gonna keep my gloating, real, real, calm, casual.

Speaker 5 (01:27:22):
We will see come Sunday what is and what is not.

Speaker 4 (01:27:25):
But if they're fourteen and three and they win the
NFC East and they've got a home playoff game, you
might be unbearable.

Speaker 5 (01:27:31):
You had I don't know idea you have, and I
don't know, and I don't blame you.

Speaker 4 (01:27:35):
Heck, if they win Sunday, yeah, against Baltimore. I'll be
I'll be one of the happiest guys in the world
if they're able to knock off Baltimore at least somebody.

Speaker 5 (01:27:44):
I'm walking in wearing all burgundy and golds.

Speaker 6 (01:27:47):
Oh my god, I wouldn't head head to shoes. Okay,
I'll buy some shoes. Okay, I don't have burgundy shoes
right now. I'll go buy some.

Speaker 4 (01:27:54):
You're going to go buy some. We had our second
magnum is in seven for you back in hour number one,
and quickly recapping those picks for you, Kelly's top seven
in reverse order seven through one, Falcons, Lions Commanders, Ravens, Texans,
Vikings Chiefs, My top seven again from seven through one, Bills, Lions, Commanders, Ravens, Texans,

(01:28:17):
Vikings Chiefs. So there you have that, all right? If
you would like to go see the Trans Siberian Orchestra
December the seventh at the Irvin J. Nutter Center, the
easiest way to do that is by being the correct caller,
the first person to call in at nine three, seven, five, three,
one sixty one seventy and say go commanders to Kelly.

(01:28:37):
You will get those tickets A pair of tickets to
go see the Trans Siberian Orchestra. And a lot of
folks always say, Mariah Carey is the sure sign that
Christmas is approaching. Well, you can't, you can't not put
the Trans Siberian Orchestra on that list. They have to
be there, the amount of shows they put on and
the great following that they have, and they'll be at
the Nutter Center on Saturday, December the seventh, nine, three, seven, five, six,

(01:29:00):
sixty one. All you have to say is go Commanders,
and Kelly will send you those tickets and you will
get a chance to go see Trans Siberian Orchestra. Some
of the things update you on in the world of
sports here on this Thursday again, there was an NFL
game tonight has a lot of impact in the NFL
playoff race, even though we're just five games in. San Francisco.

(01:29:21):
Goes to Seattle tonight with the forty nine ers at
two and three, the Seahawks leading the NFC West at
three and two, and that one will kick a little
bit after eight o'clock. Of course, a couple of huge
baseball games, Cleveland Guardians at Detroit taking on the Tigers
down two games to one, that American League Division Series.
A Tigers win and they go to the Nation to
the National they go to the American League Championship Series.

(01:29:43):
The Guardians win, it's back to Cleveland Saturday for a
deciding Game five in the series. Yankees and Royals play
later tonight in the other half of the American League
Division Series. Right now, with the Yankees leading that series
two games to win, a New York win and the
American League champion Ship Series starts in New York next week.
Kansas City wins and they will play Game five back

(01:30:05):
at Yankee Stadium on Saturday night, with a first pitch
in that game a little bit after eight o'clock Dodgers
pod rays. That series resumes tomorrow night in Los Angeles
with the series tied at two wins a piece. It's
the deciding fifth game of that set. The winner gets
the New York Mets and the Nation League Championship Series.
The Mets eliminated the Phillies last night in four games

(01:30:27):
in the National League Division Series, so the Mets the
first team to advance to the League Championship Series. So
that's where everything stands as far as baseball is concerned.
There are a number of college football games on top
untapped four tonight, there are let's see one two three
games Coastal Carolina's at James Madison, Middle Tennessee goes to

(01:30:48):
Louisiana Tech, and UTEP plays at Eastern Kentucky. In the
usual Thursday night TV slot, there are one two three
games Tomorrow night, northwesterns at Maryland, wnlv's at Utah State,
and in the Big twelve sixteenth rank Utah plays at
Arizona State. And that one will kick off at about

(01:31:08):
ten thirty or so. Did we get a winner? Did
someone call in and say, go Commanders?

Speaker 5 (01:31:12):
Uh?

Speaker 6 (01:31:13):
Actually a lot of people, thank you, guys, thank you guys.
Only only our first caller, Davis calling from Waynesville. He's
our winner today.

Speaker 4 (01:31:24):
A lot of people saying go commander, and I appreciate.
Just want they just wanted the tickets. You know that,
they know, they they they.

Speaker 6 (01:31:32):
Know we're about to have the best weekend ever. Okay,
they feel it.

Speaker 4 (01:31:38):
Hey, as I said, as long as they beat the Ravens,
if they can knock off the old Browns, I'll be
exceedingly happy.

Speaker 7 (01:31:44):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (01:31:44):
And if Cincinnati can find a way to win on
Sunday night in New York. Well not not not that
all is right with the world, but it will take
a certain turn in that direction, and that could make
things very interesting. Oh yeah, again, I'm trying to trying
to keep a positive spin on this.

Speaker 5 (01:32:02):
I feel you.

Speaker 6 (01:32:02):
I think, I think you're doing a good job because well,
it actually would change a lot of things. I mean,
the Steelers are still going to be the Steelers, but
that would that would get you closer to the Ravens,
and I would be feeling better about where my.

Speaker 4 (01:32:20):
Commander's think about this, think about this, if, if, if
this all happens. And again I know, I know, I know,
because the Bengals would have a tough time stopping a
wet paper bag. Right now, If Pittsburgh loses that Las Vegas,
they're three and three. If Washington beats Baltimore, the Ravens
are three and three. If Cincinnati wins, they're.

Speaker 5 (01:32:42):
Two and two and four and four right in the
right the game.

Speaker 4 (01:32:46):
Yeah, I mean, it's and it's as dire as everything
looked earlier in the week. Oh, there's a little ray
of sunshine. It's not very bright, but it's there. And
and again, let's not forget the Browns. Although I would
love to, but we can't do that. And if they
somehow managed to win in Philadelphia, well then they're doing
four and everything. When other things happen. If those other

(01:33:09):
things happen, if Vegas is able to knock off the Steelers,
and if your Commanders can get the job done in Baltimore,
well heck, it's all of a sudden. Uh, you have
a little breath of life. All of a sudden. Of course,
what will happen is Baltimore will ro out the Commanders,

(01:33:30):
the Steelers will roll in Las Vegas, the Bengals will
lose to the Giants, and the Browns will beat the Eagles,
and we'll be at one and five and then in
last place. I just have a hint of a hunch
that that's how it's gonna play it.

Speaker 5 (01:33:44):
So out it's the complete opposite of.

Speaker 4 (01:33:47):
Your No, I know, I know, I just that's just
that's just the way it has gone this year.

Speaker 5 (01:33:54):
I understand. I listen.

Speaker 6 (01:33:55):
I'm I'm the most superstitious person I know, only and
totally about the Washington Commanders, not even other Washington sports teams,
the Wizards. I'm gonna change my socks. I don't care
with the commanders like I have rituals. There's certain people
I won't talk to a lot of things, and it

(01:34:15):
hasn't it seems to have not mattered this this season.

Speaker 5 (01:34:19):
All of it's.

Speaker 6 (01:34:19):
Working, obviously, but these so I I understand all of
all of the feelings you're having, and when.

Speaker 5 (01:34:26):
You miss those rituals, sometimes the team loses.

Speaker 6 (01:34:29):
That's at least that's how I've You know, someone's gotta
bear the brunt of it. It certainly was not the
players for a long time, so I had to I
had to take that take that on. But I honestly
I want the Bengals to win as well, because I
don't want the Giants winning anything ever.

Speaker 5 (01:34:48):
Ever, I don't like them.

Speaker 4 (01:34:50):
Yeah, I again, I feel your painbody else in the
AFC North to win either. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:34:55):
We we just got to do each other's teams as
solid this this weekend. You beat our division rivals, we'll
beat your division rivals, and we'll be friends. We can
come in here on Monday as friends.

Speaker 4 (01:35:09):
I'm not counting on it though. I just there's just
that part of me that just can't, that just can't
live in that world right now. It's a hard thing.
It's a very very hard.

Speaker 6 (01:35:20):
Thing, so got to be positive, Marty.

Speaker 4 (01:35:25):
High school football there game scattered across the area. Tonight
Tomorrow night, a big night of high school football of course,
week number eight, and we'll have our iHeart high School
Football Radio Blitz for you tomorrow afternoon about four fifteen
as we get you ready for that part of the
high school football schedule. We'll also do what we usually
do on Friday, recap some of the best parts of
the show during the week. Kelly's back with us on Monday,
and she will be hopefully basking in the glow of

(01:35:47):
a commander's win over the Baltimore Ravens and I could
not agree with her more. Hopefully that does happen. So yeah,
all right, thanks everybody who participated in the program today.
We always appreciate it. We're back with you tomorrow from
three to four fifteen. Kelly's back on Monday. This is
the press box. We're with you every day right here
on Fox Sports nine am W one.
