Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the press box with Marty Banister, the latest
on all local sports from Wright State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine three seven by three one six,
one seven zero the press box on Fox Sports nine
(00:20):
eighty WNA.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
It's only gotten half the rosters and we are at
ten five stars and over thirty four stars.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
That is Eric Horseman, who is in charge of the
fly in to the Hoop Classic which comes to the
Fairmont Cattering Arena the Trend Arena in February. Welcome to
the press box Fox Sports nine eighty w O one
I said to February January. Of course Fox Sports nine
eighty w owne great tab leviser This afternoon big press
conference over in the area today, had a chance to attend.
(00:55):
We will hear comments from Eric Horseman. We will hear
comments as well too from Nathan Martin, nail ahead basketball
coach at Wayne High School. We will also hear from
Tony dixonhead basketball coach at Dunbar High School. So we
have a lot to get into today. All of that
though kind of right at the top though, takes a
little bit of a back seat because of what happened
about thirty five minutes ago. The Cleveland Browns have dealt
(01:15):
wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills. Kelly Be,
the producer of the program alongside for the ride this afternoon,
and I guess the question becomes right now Number one,
I don't know that I'm surprised that they made a deal.
I'm a little surprised when they made the deal the
week of the Bengals game, the week after an abysmal
(01:40):
performance in Philadelphia, with the trade deadline still what three
weeks away, two and a half weeks away. I'm curious
as to what signal this sends. Does it a you
wonder does it mean that there was was there a
riff between Amari Cooper and Deshaun Watson that has been
(02:00):
speculated on many many different fronts. I think there's a
I don't know what direction to take with this right now.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
I definitely think that there is beef between DeShawn Watson
and probably every wide receiver on his team right now.
Probably so I could absolutely see that. But it seems
like making this move right now is kind of for
the the you know, we've talked a lot about the
morale of the team, and maybe Amari Cooper was maybe
(02:29):
one of the vocal leaders being like this guy is
terrible and he's not helping us. And I'm not saying
he said those things exactly. I'm just saying he was
maybe part of the energy of negativity towards Deshaun Watson
in the locker room.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Yeah, there's no way to really find out if that's
exactly what happened. The Browns apparently thinking this is well,
I don't know what they're thinking it was. Really we
haven't heard from them yet as far as there as
far as to why the deal was made, but it
is to me it's very interesting from a team standpoint,
(03:05):
from a timing standpoint, as I mentioned, and not because
they're playing the Bengals this week, but because well, let's
face it, there are seasons hanging by a very very
very very thin thread right now, and so does this
move just I mean, you might your first reaction was
to say, well, they've run up the white flag on
(03:28):
what's left of this season. Now. Again, I don't know
if that's the Obviously they're not going to come out
and say, oh, we've quit. That's it see you next year.
They're not going to do that. But is that how
this move could be perceived by a fan base that
right now I think is just basically had it with
everything that front office tries to do and has done
(03:50):
in terms of its quarterback position, because let's face it,
two you're not trading number four, he's not going anywhere.
Number one you're not making a d because no one
else wants him. Yeah, and number two c number one exactly.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
I think that's just so bad for Browns fans. This
just keeps getting worse. This is one hundred percent waving
the white flag. What did they get back?
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Some draft draft picks? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (04:19):
What do you?
Speaker 4 (04:20):
What position do draft picks play? They're not They're not
trying to build anything else until I think they get
their house in order, and they know that their house
is not in order because they're dealing excellent one A.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
One B receivers.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
You don't do that if you're trying to build something,
and especially if you're not getting anything back. The Jets,
right they just got DeVante Adams. Why, because they're trying
to build something. They they actually played a pretty good
game yesterday. The first half of that game, the offense
looked like the Aaron Rodgers of before for a second, right,
(04:59):
and then they kind of came back down to earth.
I feel like the Browns they're not making moves like
that to move forward this season. They're looking in their future.
That's why you get draft right.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Let's face it too, When you have a receiver of
that ability, I mean, I think everybody would say he's
not He's not Jamar Chase t Higgins ability. No, he's
not far off of it though, sure, But when your offense,
I mean they Watson has not had a two hundred
dard passing game yet this season. They haven't scored twenty
(05:32):
points in a game yet this season. Those will probably
all change on Sunday. They'll probably run up it down
the field against the Bengals. But but the chances of
doing that just dropped dramatically two hundred yards twenty points
a game by training this guy at least, that's the
way you look at it from one standpoint, because I
(05:54):
mean a Cooper this year, I mean obviously he was
he wanted a new contract. That maybe and that probably
has played a big role in this as well too.
Right now, the Browns, at least field they got something
for him. But at the same time, I just I'll
be ant. We're gonna put a fan poll up here.
We've been running around doing one hundred and fourteen things,
(06:15):
trying to get the show slapped together for you and
with all of our stuff from over at the Flying
to the Hoop Press Conference today, Tony Gerdwin, by the way,
joined us. Next hour we'll talk a little Ohio State football,
get his thoughts on what the Buckeyes did over the
weekend at Oregon and wants ahead for Ohio State. As
I mentioned the Flying to the Hoop Classic, a big
press conference, a lot of basketball talent in that one
(06:37):
room over at the Dayton Marriott this morning, And I
mean there were some basketball players in that room and
some very good coaches. And I said, we had a
chance to talk to Tony Dickson, I had a chance
to talk to Nathan Martin Dale. We're gonna hear from
all of those. We're gonna hear more from Air Horseman
as we roll along here this afternoon. Guardians dropped Game
one of the American League Championship Series last night, fell
to the Yankees New York, with the victory game series
(07:00):
set for tonight Mets beat the Dodgers, so that series
is level at a victory a piece, and it heads
back to New York now for games three, four, and
if needed game number five, well you will need a
game five since it's a split right now. So that's
where we stand pretty much. College football polls are out, well,
we talked a little bit about those yesterday as well too. Oh,
(07:21):
we got it if you were with this. Yesterday we
had a really interesting conversation about a story in southeast
Ohio about a high school football player rest slash wrestler
who is suing the school district because he was suspended
for violating rules and he feels and his family feels
that is hurting his ability to earn nil money in
(07:43):
the future, because again, nil is not a part of
what happens in the Ohio high school athletics situation right now.
A couple of hours after we went off the air,
word crossed that the state of North Carolina has become
the latest to allow nil for high school athletes. A
judge ruled that that is legal, so and that's that's
(08:03):
probably how it will get done here is it will
be a lawsuit. Someone will take this to court, and
I think there might have already been a lawsuit about
this at some point. Kelly's doing some JFG I for
us right now, just blanking google it, as we always
like to say, to find out for certain But as
(08:24):
I said yesterday, I think it's coming to Ohio at
some point here in the not too distant future. But
I thought that was kind of interesting as we had
that discussion about that yesterday, and that popped up rather
quickly after the show ended.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
It's it's serendipitous.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
So in arguing.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
In August some lawmakers in Ohio, it does not actually
specify which lawmakers have been working on a bill to
allow inn IL.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
In high school.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Well, there you go.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
So there they are working on it, and they would
like to quote, seek to clarify nil law parameters for
student athletes. I don't know what that means, but they
there you go.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Yeah, So it's it's it's moving down the chuote, so
to speak. So I think that's kind of where where
we're at with all of that right now. So but yeah,
I thought that was interesting. It came up but not
too long after we talked talked about it here in
the program.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
So I just I don't think I mean to you know,
not to belabor the point, but if you break the
law the rules of a school where you play a sport,
you don't get to play the sport anymore. All sports,
all of the after school activities are privileged. They're all
it's a privilege to get to participate. And also, if
(09:44):
you think about it, for a lot of these activities,
unless your school is exceptional or spectacular, a lot of
those teachers are volunteering their time to be there to
allow your child to have those after school activities. So
it's a privilege. It's not something that we reserve for
kids that are breaking the rules of the school. I'm
(10:04):
sorry that I don't agree with that.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
There's no I don't. I don't think there's any way
to counter that, because I don't think you're wrong. You
break a rule, should you should be forced to pay
the penalty? Yeah, and your ability to earn nil money, Well,
that's still going to be there when you get to school,
just simply because you miss three wrestling matches this year. Yeah,
that's I think that's as I say, I think it's
(10:27):
a pretty pretty frivolous thing that we're looking at here.
So all right, we're gonna put a fan pole up
for you here today. We're gonna center it on. I
had one ready to go, but then this happened, and
I wanted to get your reaction to this. We're gonna
ask you about the Amari Cooper trade. What's your reaction
to the trade that has sent Browns wide receiver Amari
Cooper to Buffalo? Is the deal long overdue? Is it
simply a bad trade? Or does it signal that the
(10:48):
Browns have well raise the white flag on the twenty
twenty twenty four season, Well, maybe twenty twenty five season,
for all we know the twenty twenty four season. Does
that signal that? Or is it a good trade? Do
you like it? Is it something that the team needed
to do? It makes sense you're getting something, at least
for Cooper. And that's our fan poll. We have that
(11:10):
up for you today and it will be posted here
in a matter of moments. In the world of technology,
all right, three twelve as the time we'll the step
aside we come back. We'll also talk to you about
the other big NFL deal today. Even though the folks
on national media think that the Jets are the only
team that's doing anything We'll have to mention the DeVante
Adams trade as well too. Monday Nay football last night,
(11:32):
speaking of the Jets, they lost to the Bills twenty
three to twenty. They are now two and four on
the season. I think we still get them thirteen more
times on Primetime TV the rest of the way out.
It's the press box. Good head with us here on
this what has turned into a sunny Tuesday was in
the forties earlier today. So it's the press box Fox
Sports nine eight wa.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three, seven by three, one, six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN eighty.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
We continue along with you here on this Tuesday afternoon,
three seventeen. It is I'm great to have you with us.
This is the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty w any.
I'm Marty Banister, working bad. You're with us here. It
is game week, Yes, it is Battle of Ohio week,
and it has taken on a little different feel after
the news of about the thirty five minutes or forty
minutes ago when it was announced by the Browns that
(12:53):
they have dealt wide receiver Omari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills.
Daryl Ryder, who covers the Browns for ninety two three
the Fan in Cleveland and on Twitter. You can find
him at right or Wrong fa N get it right
or wrong? Uh huh yeah yeah. Listed a number of
the Browns players who are in their final year of
contracts and eligible for free agency next March. I get
(13:18):
ready for this. Nick Chubb, Rodney McCloud, Elijah Moore, Maurice Hurst,
so Darius Smith, Jedrick Wills, Junior James Hudson, the Anthony Bell,
Jameis Winston. There are a few players on there that
are rather key contributed Rodney McLoud. Of course, that's tied
for the team leading touchdowns this season. He's a safety
(13:38):
that tells you how the offense has been.
Speaker 5 (13:40):
It's it's a rebuild.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
I don't know how you can look at this really
any other way. And although teams shy away from using
that word if at all possible in situations, I don't
know how you can look at this any other way.
I would think the next guy that could possibly go
(14:04):
that has value currently, much like Amari Cooper, is the
Darius Smith. I would be stunned if we don't hear
that that has happened here. If this is indeed what
this is, you just that's the next one. And and
there are stories already floating around the Detroit Lions have
(14:24):
been in contact with the Browns because you remember they
lost Aiden Hutchison on Sunday in the game against Dallas,
just a gruesome, gruesome injury.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
So I guess you you there's also cap space to consider, sure,
which they're forty million in the hole for next year, right,
so so they can't even keep these guys if they
want it.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
You're one and six or one in five five. I'm
hoping it's one and six after Sunday. I just can't.
That's gonna that's gonna be so hard to watch on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (14:59):
It should not be. I don't even have a wide receiver.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
Anymore, doesn't matter. The Bengals are two and eight against
them against in the last ten games against Cleveland. Zach Taylor,
the AFC North, he just simply doesn't understand. That's about
the best way I can come up with it. And
that's just I'm just being facetious with that. But in
all reality, Cincinnati should go up there and just pound
(15:26):
them into submission. But they won't. This will be a
close game, and it would would not surprise me at
all if Cleveland wins it, as painful and as agonizing
as that will be, it wouldn't surprise me at all.
Wouldn't surprise me at all. And I'll be a mess
on Monday, I will. I'm not gonna lie to you,
(15:47):
because after the win over the Giants on Sunday night,
you've got a chance here against this team which is
obviously in some sort of disarray right now, and then
a Philadelphia which had to hang on to beat this
team being the Browns, and then you've got the Raiders
at home. I mean, you stand a chance of being
(16:10):
five and four and kind of back into this thing.
And these are the type of games in past years
where things have kind of started to move a little
bit your way and you run into these guys, and
they're these guys being Cleveland. They come into these games
in these type of situations where things are unraveling or
they're having a bad year or whatever, and they just
(16:33):
come right out and just become the whatever they they become,
and they find ways to win. And I just it's
just so frustrating as a Bengals fan. To have to
because I'm I mean, I'm telling you it's Tuesday, three
twenty one, and I'm nervous right now, I really am.
I'm just I just I just as I said that
(16:54):
one's sun. They will be so very hard to watch.
Speaker 5 (16:57):
You need twenty one points if you're the Bengals, you
need twenty one point.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
No, you need forty one points. You need forty one points,
yes you do.
Speaker 5 (17:05):
Team is not scoring forty one point, Kelly.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
I'm just telling you it would be.
Speaker 6 (17:11):
You don't know.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
You don't know what we Bengal fans go through in
this game. It's so bad because there have been bad
Browns teams which have no business, no business beating Cincinnati
and they do it. And it's just and because if
you look at it, position by position, obviously Cincinnati's better
at quarterback. Yeah, that's that's a given. Cincinnati right now
(17:36):
is better at running back immediately, not much better, but better.
And again I'm not I'm not putting Nick Chubb into
this because he hasn't we haven't been told yet that
he's definitely playing. He will play. I'm I'm but he's
not what he was. We don't know what he is
right now. Offensive line. As bad at times as the
(17:56):
Bengals line has been, it's still better than Cleveland's right now. Defensively,
it's Cleveland hands down. I think it just about every
position on defense certainly. I mean I like the Bengals
linebackers Jermaine Pratt and Logan Wilson, but Ousu Kormawa, I'd
take him in a heartbeat. I mean, if you could
(18:17):
float him down I seventy one, I'd do that in
an absolute heartbeat. I like that guy a lot. I
like their defensive backs, although Denzel Ward seemingly is hurt
every week, but that he has always been able to
shut down Jamar Chase. He has actually so see, those
are the things. And Zach Taylor being Zach Taylor. He
(18:44):
I wish the Browns were in the NFC West, then
I sincin I's gonna win this gi Yeah, but they're
AFC North team, so Cincinnati will will struggle anyway, certainly,
back around to where we were, this deal, to me,
just on the outside looking in, seems to be one
where the Browns have decided that it's time to reboot,
(19:08):
to go back in. Okay, we've got to get something
for some of these guys while we can. Let's get better,
let's get draft picks, and let's start this thing from
scratch again. And if you're a Cleveland Browns fan, you would,
I would think right now you would have to be well,
I know you're way past frustrated, I mean way past
frustrated right now with everything up there, But are you
(19:31):
ready for another rebuild? Are you ready for that to happen?
Because I think this is what the direction this is going.
If you again, you look at all the players we
just mentioned that are eligible for free agency in March,
what do you do? And if Deshaun Watson stays, how
many of these guys are going to voluntarily want to
(19:52):
come back because this isn't getting any better?
Speaker 4 (19:55):
Nobody wants to come back. I mean, they don't want
to be there right now, that's clear. I guess it's
just they're not. I mean, I think that right now
the Browns plan is to retool this team with players
that are willing to buy into the Deshaun Watson experiment.
Speaker 5 (20:13):
Experience.
Speaker 4 (20:15):
It's an experiment, and I think that part of getting
rid of some of these higher paid veteran players is
that those guys probably most likely are not on board
for this Deshaun Watson experiment. A rookie, a one year guy,
(20:35):
a two year guy, someone coming off the practice squad.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
He's just happy to be there. That's the kind of.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
Energy that they need to surround Deshaun Watson with now,
not veterans who have been through the thick and thin
of this league, who see everything that Deshaun Watson is
and no, he is not going to help them win
a single football game. The energy around the entire Browns
organization is palpable, and it's negative.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
It is it is, and it's around the organization, it's
the fan base, it's top to bottom. And I mean,
if you're Jimmy Haslam and that franchise, in that front office,
don't you have to at some point acknowledge that and say, Okay,
hey we missed. I mean, he would do himself, in
(21:24):
my opinion, a world of good if he would just
walk out tomorrow and say, you know what, we got
this one wrong.
Speaker 4 (21:30):
I honestly think if he did that, the team would
almost immediately play better.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
Just the energy around.
Speaker 4 (21:36):
I think the fans could feel like, Okay, we missed,
we made a mistake. To ignore the mistake, though the
energy around that is just it's worse.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
Maybe you wait till the season's over though, to do that,
because I mean, if he comes out right now and says, hey,
we whiffed on this, I mean we all know where
that's going. I mean, it's one in five right now,
it's on the edge of going completely into the porcelain altar.
It goes all the way down then and you can
hit flush at that point if he were to come
out dead. So that's not going to happen. But I
(22:11):
do think at the end of the season there's going
to have to be some serious admittance of failure because
this is it has failed. There's no question it has failed.
Watson is not getting any better no matter how much
you roll him out there and try to get him better,
He's just not getting any better. And he's just not
(22:32):
the quarterback that everybody, namely Jimmy, hasn't thought he was
going to be. It just hasn't worked. So you kind
of have to say, all right, we're sorry, it just
didn't work. Financially, just didn't work. How do you move
I mean until they find a trade partner. I don't
think they can eat that much dead money and still
(22:52):
roll out a football team that wouldn't like I mean,
and I earnestly mean this, like get hurt on the
football field.
Speaker 4 (23:00):
You're we're talking about, they would be. Everyone else would
be a bargain basement player. If you if you eat
the Shawn Watson's contract, who do you who can you pay?
Speaker 5 (23:11):
Literally?
Speaker 3 (23:12):
Well, they're they're there. That's the thing about this too.
There are no takers out there. No, there's nobody out
there that's going to say, hey, yeah, sure we'll take him.
We would love to have him come into our locker room.
Come on, there's nobody out there that's going to do that.
I don't care what kind of deal you make, even
if you admit, even if you about the only way
(23:32):
would be no. No, I mean you're trying to you're
trying to build something in a franchise like that, You're
trying to get better. You're trying to tell the fans
we're serious. Are you serious if you bring this guy in?
Speaker 5 (23:46):
No, the Panthers are an unseerious franchise.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
Though I don't I'm not arguing that, but my point is,
if you're trying to convince a fan base that we
are serious about becoming a contender. Again, the last deal
you want to make is to bring to Shaun Watson
into your into your franchise. There's no other team that's
going to do that. Now, if the Browns were to
cut him or whatever it is you have to do,
(24:12):
somebody will pick him up. I don't. I don't doubt that,
but he won't be your starter. And he's going to
be a guy that's just I mean, he's just going
to play out his career as kind of a a
Joe Flacco type who may who may just show up
at a when when you're when you're out of when
you're out of options, you go find this guy.
Speaker 5 (24:32):
Because I don't even think he could do that. I think,
like some some.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
I didn't mean be like the impact that Joe Flacco had,
but be the type of quarterback that's like I mean,
Joe Flacco was on his count, yeah, watching watching football
and then he had a phone call. I think, yeah,
he's kind of I'm not gonna go.
Speaker 4 (24:50):
He's too big of a name to be a backup quarterback,
like a serviceable backup quarterback. I think that will be
pressure on whoever is in front of him, and I'm
not real press sure you know what I mean. But
I think I think they No one wants that, know, No,
that's the problem.
Speaker 3 (25:06):
They are stuck with this albatross.
Speaker 5 (25:08):
The Titans.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
No, no, they have will have you watched some well left,
But they also have Brian Callahan, who was the Bengals
offensive coordinator. Brian, he's not doing that. He's not doing
There's not a I mean, you can look at every
team in the NFL. There's not a single one that's
ringing the Browns phone right now. I'm going, uh, well,
we know you just traded Amari Cooper. Uh, we're kind
(25:31):
of curious about number four, the quarterback. Is he available
right now? There's not a team, there's not a single
solitary team in the league doing that, not a one,
and nor will there be a one doing that. Why
would you? Why would you? It's obvious he's an issue
in the Rocker room, he's an issue on the field,
he's issue off the field and off the field, and
(25:52):
his contract is a mammoth issue. The Browns are stuck
with him. I would love to laugh, but I feel sorry.
I feel sorry for Browns fans. I do, I do.
I'm gonna read a comment. We come back from the nude. Yeah,
I'll take that bet, I'll do that. It's the press box,
Fox Sports nine eighty w.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
A get on the press box called Marty now at
(26:32):
nine to three seven buy three one six, one seven
zero the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty wn E.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
Three thirty four. As we roll along with you here
on this Tuesday afternoon. Of course, the big news coming
down about an hour or so ago, the Cleveland Browns
a trade a wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Buffalo
Bills draft picks from both sides involved in this trade.
We have a fan pull up for you today. Watch
your reaction to the deal that has sent I'm Auri
Cooper to Buffalo. It was long overdue. It's a bad trade.
(27:04):
It signifies the Browns are giving up on the season.
Or I like the deal. It's a good move, and
someone has voted for that seventy five percent though, say nah,
giving up on the season. Yeah, that's where we're at
right now. I mentioned prior to the break, our friend
the New Two checks in rather frequently. We always appreciate that,
and we always appreciate it when all of you check in.
We always like to hear your questions or comments. He says,
(27:25):
there's no other way to look at this trade other
than they are giving up on the season and collecting
picks which they got a third and seventh round for
Cooper to draft a quarterback and cut Watson at the
end of the year. Then, he says, I bet Marty
Banister the Browns will lose by twenty or more points
on Sunday, Hot Fudge Sunday. I'll take that. I I'm sorry.
(27:49):
I just this rivalry, this game just annoys the you
know what out of me, because, as I told Kelly
during the break, I would love to see Cincinnati go
up there and just pound them, put them out of
their misery, put them out of our misery, and we
can just forget about them for the rest of the season.
But that won't happen. It won't. I'm telling you right now,
(28:12):
it will not happen. Cincinnati will not be able to
go up there and just dispose of that, of that
disaster of They won't be able to do it. They
just won't, And I just it's just the way it is.
It's just the way this rivalry goes. If they do,
I'll be the happiest person in the state of Ohio,
(28:33):
maybe in the Midwest, maybe maybe in the continuous forty
eight states, maybe in all fifty states. I'm not done yet, man, No,
this is this should be.
Speaker 4 (28:42):
I mean, right now, I can't say Cincinnati has any
gimme games. At the same time, we're talking about a
team that has not scored twenty points in a game
this season. Joe Burrow has scored over thirty points three times.
Two of those were losses, So it's it's I mean,
(29:03):
we know, we know what Joe can do. And also,
the Browns do not have Amari Cooper. They are they are,
hopefully for Nick Chubb, gonna have their premier running back back.
But if you know they're gonna run the ball because
it's the Browns, you know, stop the run easier said
(29:26):
than done for Cincinnati. I'm just telling you, I just
just telling the Bengals need to make a statement here
because I mean, the state of the Browns is.
Speaker 3 (29:37):
There's a yeah, no, but yeah. There's an old George
carl online where he talks about the comedian George Carlin
where he talks about if you continually go out the
front door and somebody dumps a bucket of you know
what on your head. How many times are you gonna
keep going out the front door? Correct? But that's the
way this has always worked in this series. I mean,
(29:58):
the Bengals are two in a in their last ten
games against Cleveland, and Browns fans love to say, oh,
we beat Joe Burrow four tide. Well, you hadn't beaten
me that many times because one of the games he
didn't play that was a game where Cincinnati already clinched
the AFC nor that game meant actually nothing, and he
didn't play in the game last year, which meant absolutely nothing.
So that's the part of it that we Bengal So
at least this Bengals fan is so annoyed by that
(30:21):
you just for whatever reason. I mean, the year what
was the Super Bowl year, the game was huge in Cincinnati.
The Bengals go right down and I mean right down
the field. They just sliced and dice that Brown's defense
to pieces all the way down the field. What happens
they're in the red zone. Burrow throws the pick six,
Denzel Ward goes ninety nine yards and that game was
(30:42):
over at that point. The Halloween game two years ago
in Cleveland, Miles Garrett deflexa pass early on in the
game for an interception. That game was over. Burrow went
into recoil, didn't do anything the rest of the game.
Couldn't move the offense. Last year in Cleveland, game number
one of the regular season, the Bengals weren't ready to play,
(31:02):
as they never are in opening games. The Browns were,
and the Browns and if you go back and look
at that game last year, the Browns weren't very good
that day. No, they weren't. It was it was like
it rained the whole day. The best thing for Cincinnati
would be sunny and seventy five degrees on Sunday in Cleveland.
That would And if that happens, And if the Cincinnati
(31:24):
offense that showed up against Carolina, against Baltimore, against who
before that, Washington, because they moved up and downfield against
your beloved Commanders, if that team shows up on Sunday,
then okay, I think Cincinnati can win that game rather
handily because the Cleveland offense, we know, it just can't move.
(31:48):
It just can't move. And if any if Monday night
was anything to this Bengals defense. Okay, now all that
being said, none of that will happen. Even We'll getree
hundred yards total offense, Deshaun Watson will come out looking
like whomever aged. Nick Chubb will run for two hundred
and twenty yards, and Cincinnati defense will go back to
(32:10):
what it was prior to the Giants game. Those will
be the two scenarios.
Speaker 4 (32:15):
So that would that would really that would really shock me, Marty,
it really would. I know, I understand a rivalry game,
and and the Bengals are pretty terrible against their division.
I don't know who needs to be addressed about that,
but someone in that organization.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
I do, I can tell you who you need to
address for that. That's that's a pretty simple That's a
pretty simple answer.
Speaker 4 (32:39):
But yeah, it's it would shock me if I mean,
because the Bengals actually don't have to be great, they
just have to kind of be passable to get past
this this Brown's team this week.
Speaker 3 (32:52):
All that being said, man, I know we've all I
think said, I don't care if it's seven to six,
if it's ten to three, if it's thirty seven to
thirty five. As long as Ohio's team, the Bengals, wins
the game, I'll be happy. I'll be I'll take it
and run. As I said earlier, I would love to
see Cincinnati just go go up there and just push
(33:13):
them right into the lake and have it over with
and be done with having to worry about them for
the rest of the season. That won't happen. What what?
That would be so nice though, That would be so
But as I said, it won't happen, mark my words, exactly.
That's for all those goofy Browns fans who refer to
Cincinnati's being in Kentucky. Sure, yeah, just buy a map
(33:36):
by a globe. Love rivalries. But yeah again though, so
the Browns of Dela Maari Cooper to the Buffalo Bill's
draft picks involved in that. And it helps Buffalo a
great deal. Oh, I mean.
Speaker 4 (33:53):
Buffalo, Buffalo wished they had Amari Cooper last night, no question.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
I still won the game. Yeah, they still won the game.
But this helps. This gives Josh Allen another target. And
if Cooper, if he can cure his inability to hang
on to passes. And if you're the Browns who maybe
(34:20):
you're thinking too, hey, maybe this guy's maybe this guy's
just done right now. Oh absolutely, I don't think he is.
But well, but it's interesting to talk about him. As
I said, I just love rid games, all right. When
we come back earlier today, big press conference over at
the Dayton Marriott previewing what has really become the pre
eminent high school basketball event, certainly in the state of Ohio,
(34:41):
aside from the tournament, it's the Fly to the Hoop Classic.
When we come back, we'll spend some time with two
of the area coaches who had their teams there on
this Tuesday to talk about the classic. Tony Dixon at
Dayton Dunbar and Nathan Martindale from Hubert Heights Wayne. We'll
visit with both those coaches when we come back, and
we'll still squeeze into conversation. I had the organizer of
the event, our friend Eric Horseman, will do all that
(35:03):
for you. Great to have you with us here on
this Tuesday, three forty two. At the time, it's the
press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WI.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
three seven by three one six, one seven zero the
press box on Fox Sports nine eighty W on e.
Speaker 3 (35:52):
Three forty six. As we continue along with you here
on this Tuesday, it's the press box Fox Sports nine
eighty Wane. Earlier today over at the Date Area Hotel,
the Flying to the Hoop folks had their press conference
to give you a rundown of the teams that will
be participating in this event. And again, if you're a
high school basketball fan and you follow basketball in our area,
(36:12):
it is really one of the pre eminent events, certainly
I think in the state of wh I think you
can probably stretch it across the Midwest because of the
amount of talent it shows up, of the amount of
interest it generates. The Trent Arena is packed for every game,
and the amount of teams from around the country that
(36:32):
want to be a part of this, and there are
a number of local teams involved in it. One of
those is coached by Nathan Martindale, and that is Hubert Heights,
Wayne and Nathan Martindale. By the way, I was not
aware of this big fan of this program, says he
listens every day.
Speaker 5 (36:47):
Poor guy, I wonder who that was.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
I knew there was somebody out there.
Speaker 5 (36:53):
Well, we appreciate that.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
I know we had a listener somewhere, but no, we
have a mutual friend. Are a good buddy, Jim Scoby.
Scobe is just the sut of the Earth, and Nathan
and I both called Jim a very good friend. But yeah,
but we appreciate the listenership as always, and his team,
the Wayne Warriors, will be participating in the Fly Into
(37:16):
the Hoop Classic in January. Number one. The importance of
an event like this to a program like yours, What
does it mean?
Speaker 7 (37:22):
It means everything does because we're from Dayton, Ohio, and
I feel like we have great basketball Dayton, Ohio. We
have great basketball in Ohio period, and I think it's
an opportunity for our kids to showcase their skills not
only against other Ohio teams, but prep schools and nationally schools.
Speaker 6 (37:37):
And we're a public school and we take great pride
and how we work and the things that we do.
Speaker 7 (37:42):
And so for us, it's an opportunity and of blessing
to be able to play in this great event, great crowds,
great people running it, and it's a great thing to
do on Martin Luther King Day weekend because the weather,
the wait is in Ohio.
Speaker 6 (37:54):
It's a great, great weekend to come out and watch.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
When you play these events, what's the message to your
team when you go into these It's middle of the season.
You've still got a tournaments around the corner. I think
that's kind of a good point to look at it
in this as well too. But what's your message to
your team when you're playing something like this?
Speaker 7 (38:08):
For me, it's all about competing. So we want to
see where we are. We want to go against the
very best, not only in the state but in the country.
We schedule our whole season that way. We want to
play against the best team, see what we're made of.
So for us, it's like we're gonna get halfway through
the season and see, hey, like Garfield Heights, we're gonna
play Marcus Johnson going to the ohios a university job.
They said forty four to forty five last year the
game we know we played him as a freshman. He
(38:30):
was phenomenal, scored seventeen on us. They beast by like
two or four. But we know we're gonna play against
a great team, a great coach, And for us, it's like,
what what better? There's nothing better to me than to
see where we are. So our message is we're gonna
go and compete. But we're not just gonna go and
play the game. We wanna go compete. We want to
try to win the game. That's our focus.
Speaker 3 (38:48):
And to see the other teams that are involved in
this as well too, I think the message is the
same for them. This is a this is a great
way to compete and a great way to find out
a lot about your team.
Speaker 6 (38:55):
This is absolutely so.
Speaker 7 (38:57):
Like you just said, we're gonna find out a lot
about our team because we have to go play against
a really good team, really well coached team. And for me,
like if if you want to go far in the tournament, Ohio,
like you want to be prepared mentally and physically, and
this is and this allows us to do that every
single year because it puts us on the stage where
you get one or two days to figure out what
you're gonna do against a team and go play and
see what you're made of.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
You had some of your players here today well, and yeah,
I could see the look on their faces. They were
just the whole thing is first class. And you can
see the look on their faces that they're excited about this.
I think if they could they go to play today,
wouldn't they.
Speaker 6 (39:28):
Absolutely? Our kids are working extremely hard.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
They work year round.
Speaker 6 (39:32):
We've been working really hard September in October.
Speaker 3 (39:34):
But I love my guys to death.
Speaker 6 (39:36):
They're great kids, and they're great young men.
Speaker 7 (39:38):
And for us to be able to play at line
to the hoop, it allows other people to see who they.
Speaker 6 (39:43):
Are and that for me, it's a blessing.
Speaker 7 (39:45):
And I'll be honest, just to get to come to
the press conference today and expose them.
Speaker 3 (39:49):
To this is a beautiful thing.
Speaker 7 (39:50):
And then we're gonna go get some lunch together, and
it's for us, it's a blessing just to have that
time together. See you and keem Mondy bonding, and it's
we're family. Like Eric said, it's a big family, and
I feel like we're part of flying to the Hoop.
And I just think Eric and the entire staff are
always making us feel special and actually he's always done.
Speaker 3 (40:08):
Sure. I want to get your thoughts. This is a
big change coming this year in the state of Ohio.
We go to seven divisions in basketball. It's unlike anything
that the state has seen. You go away from the
final four to format. Initially, what are your thoughts on that?
Speaker 7 (40:20):
You know, it's interesting and I just realize this today
we were looking at the tournament bracket. There's seven divisions,
So in Dayton area there's only six teams, and it
looks like you're gonna start out basically the sectional championship.
You're gonna possibly play home or away, completely different than
playing a neutral game. And in Division one, there's only
six teams in the g Walk, so it looks like
(40:42):
you got to play one of those other five schools
for a third time the first game of the tournament
sectional championship.
Speaker 6 (40:49):
That's wild to me, you know what I mean.
Speaker 7 (40:51):
So I just kind of was talking to my coaches
about that this morning, matter of fact, and so I
would like to personally see it be a super regional
so that there's nineteen Cincinnati schools, six Dating schools, and
you can play Cincinnati or Date in that first game,
just because we're playing everybody in the league twice, the
league twice a year, and it's six g WALK teams,
So I would like to see that. I think that
(41:11):
would be a great adjustment. But we're gonna make the
most of them. We're gonna learn and figure out what
we can do. And once again, you have to be
tournament ready because that first game might be in its
opponent this exception, and you might have to go play
their place to win the game. So it's it's gonna
be a different feel, but we're just gonna try to
get better each day and try to accept that challenge.
Speaker 3 (41:29):
And it kind of goes back to what you were
just talking about.
Speaker 7 (41:31):
In an event like this, get you ready for that,
correct because once again you're playing against great competition and
a great environment. And I think the more way tough
away games you can play in neutral side events, the
better off you're gonna be in the tournament.
Speaker 6 (41:45):
And I feel like it's always helped us. It's always
prepared us.
Speaker 3 (41:48):
Well.
Speaker 7 (41:48):
Now that doesn't mean you're gonna have success, but I
think it allows you to have those challenges throughout the
year to mentally be tested and physically be tested.
Speaker 3 (41:55):
Which I appreciate you time.
Speaker 6 (41:56):
Appreciate you so much, Marty, Thank you so much.
Speaker 3 (41:59):
Nathan Martin the head basketball coach at Wayne, and I
loved his thought about the super Regional format because, as
he said, they're going you can start your tournament run
in the sectionals a game away or in the regionals
rather game two games away from the state tournament. That's
because of the limited number of schools in Division one
(42:21):
in this area. It's that's the one is negative. The
right word of the expanded of the extra divisions could.
Speaker 5 (42:31):
Be something like that, it's not the best part of it.
Speaker 3 (42:34):
Yeah that when you see that, it makes you think
maybe we would have been better off maybe just going
to six or maybe five and keep things a little
more balanced numerically. But I think again, to the opportunity
for more student athletes to play in a state championship.
(42:56):
That's a good thing. And that's that's the overriding aspect
of all this. As again, execut Director Doug You of
the OHSA will tell anybody who asks, not about how
we feel about it, about the student athletes feel about it,
and that's what this is supposed to be about. Another
head coach from mary team who had his squad there
today taking part in the event was the head coach
of Dunbar, Tony Dixon Number one. The importance of an
(43:17):
event like this for a programming like yours, What does
this mean to you? It means a lot.
Speaker 8 (43:22):
This is something kids that inspire to come to Dunbar,
look up to look forward to, and for us to
see them playing this in event is really really big
and really really.
Speaker 3 (43:31):
Special, and it's an event unlike any other really, I
think around the country and the folks with the flyingel
who do a great job with it, don't they absolutely?
Speaker 8 (43:38):
Like I said, I was a player first when he
first started years ago, and now I'm a coach and
it's gotten better in the twenty two years he's done it.
Speaker 3 (43:47):
Every year is better, and I love the event. It's
a great event. What do you tell your players about
participating in something like this and what it means at
the point of the season that type of thing. But
what does it mean to get a chance to play
in this mid sea.
Speaker 8 (44:00):
Because like he said, he has over one hundred teams
that apply for this event and only thirty four make it.
So this means a lot. So if you're not psyched
up or you're not grateful for this opportunity that a
lot of kids that's your age or in your area
don't get, then you know you shouldn't. You shouldn't play basketball.
So it's really really big. Really they really get excited
(44:21):
for it. So I just help them understand you have
to show gratitude for this event because a lot of
kids that's your age or in your region don't get
the chance of playing it.
Speaker 3 (44:32):
And it's a chance to put your I mean your
program has a great history. Yes, it's kind of a
chance your mind everybody that you do have.
Speaker 8 (44:37):
A great history exactly so with Eric, I think Eric
knows that about our program and our history, and that
for me being an alumni, that helps me keep that
history going and build every single year.
Speaker 3 (44:49):
Is something about the overall Dayton area basketball too, doesn't it? Yes?
Speaker 8 (44:53):
It does, Yes, it does. A lot of kids look
up to this. So for us to shign the light
on the dating area of basketball, especially the City League,
is really really big for us.
Speaker 3 (45:01):
Coach, I'm excited or you get this season going.
Speaker 8 (45:03):
I'm ready.
Speaker 3 (45:05):
I'm ready. I wish we could start next week. One
quick question too, what are your thoughts on the expansion
of divisions to seven in the state of Ohio. It's
going to be interesting.
Speaker 8 (45:16):
I'm not going to jump to conclusions or throw opinions
out there. I just want to see how it looks,
that's all. I just want to see how it looks,
get get through with it this year, to see how
it go, and go come back to the drawing board.
But I'm really interested to see how it goes. I'm excited.
I think it's a different look from what we've been doing.
So change is not always.
Speaker 3 (45:37):
Bad exactly, Coach. I appreciate your talking. Thank you, head
coach of Daton Nunbar visiting as well too at the
Flying to the Hoop press conference today, and again you
heard the different feel on it from each head coach,
and I'm sure you could put thirty five head basketball
coaches in a room and get probably thirty five different
opinions on And I like his thought of it too,
because let's just wait and see how it goes well
(46:00):
this year, and not that it's going to change after
this year, but I'm sure there could be some tweaking
and you get through it. And I think it's important
to remember as well too, while as tough as it
will be to lose that final four format, and really, basketball,
more than any other sport, is a tournament sport. There's
no question that basketball is a tournament sport. And I
(46:23):
think that's going to be the hardest thing for everybody
to kind of come to grips with because there's not
going to be a semi final Thursday, semi final Friday.
You're going to have seven championship games at the UD Arena,
and they haven't decided yet whether it's Thursday, Friday Saturday,
or Friday Saturday. There has been talk of going two
(46:44):
on Thursday or one on Thursday, then three on Friday,
then three on Saturday. There's also been talk of doing
three on Friday and four on Saturday. They're trying to
stay away from Sunday.
Speaker 5 (46:58):
Yeah, if at all possible sense.
Speaker 3 (47:00):
So uh And again you have to keep in mind too,
the folks that run the University of Dayton Arena, and
we've had gotten to bold on number of time. I mean,
these guys have to turn the building around. There's many
things they have to do in this as well too.
With that in mind, that's probably why the Friday Saturday
format is probably what's going to happen. Have one game
at noon, one at I don't know, three four, and
(47:22):
then another one at seven thirty, and then on Championship Saturday,
do what you've done in the past, go ten, forty five,
one o'clock whatever, and whatever the rest of the day
and you get your championship games done. That's probably the
direction it will go. But I as everybody has said, yeah,
(47:42):
it's it's going to be different. The hard part of
it will be the regional the semi find the semi.
Speaker 5 (47:48):
Find those are moving too closer to.
Speaker 3 (47:51):
Your your school play. So all the people who have
complained in the years, Wow, the OHSA doesn't know what
they're doing and scheduling these games. Well that's wrong they do.
But now you're not going to have that complain anymore.
Speaker 5 (48:02):
Yeah, you're gonna have to whine about something else.
Speaker 3 (48:04):
Oh, they'll find something too, Believe me, they'll find something too.
Total wine about for the Bowlder of those people out
there are just never happy, all right, three fifty eight
at the time next hour, we will hear from Eric
Horseman as well too, and our friend Tony Gerdaman visits
with us talking a little Ohio State football. Buck guys with
a bye week. I'm sorry, it's improvement week. They need it? Well,
(48:24):
yeah they do. And we'll hear more from Tony Gerdaman
about that and as why as I said, Eric Horsman
as well too. Browns of Delamari Cooper to the Buffalo
Bills on the Battle of Ohio Week. It's the press
Box Fox Sports nine eighty.
Speaker 9 (48:36):
W and a.
Speaker 1 (48:52):
Welcome to the press Box with Marty Banister. The latest
on all local sports from Right State to the Dayton
Flyers from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine to three, seven by three,
one six, one seven zero the press box on Fox
Sports nine eighty WNA.
Speaker 10 (49:15):
He was his left hip was really tightening up on
him and a little bit of backspasms going on as well.
So we're still like checking him out and just unfortunate
that happened.
Speaker 3 (49:26):
Guardians manager Stephen Vode, who had to lift Alex Cobb
from the game last night in game number one of
the American League Championship Series as the Yankees knocked off
the Cleveland Guardians in Game one. Welcome back to the
press box, Fox Sports nine eighty w O any Marty Bannerser.
We're so glad you're with us here on this Tuesday afternoon.
Kelly B's producing the program and we're glad she's with
us here this afternoon, and you have us up until
(49:48):
five o'clock today. Coming up in this hour, Tony Gerdaman
visits with us from Letterman's Row. We'll talk about Ohio
State football, the Buckeyes losing over the weekend in Oregon
to those pesky Ducks, and we'll talk to Tony about
that and what's ahead for this bluckye football team, and
just his overall reaction to what happened on Saturday night
(50:08):
in Eugene. I've had a lot of people tell me
who were there that it was as loud a venue
as they have ever been in. I've never been to.
That's one of the few that I've never been to.
I've been to Seattle, and everyone says Husky Stadium is
number one. Husky Stadium is the most beautiful venue to
see a football game. Yeah, not even close. Not even
(50:30):
close from the press box if you look to your
right is I don't know what the bay is, but
people boat up to the edge of the area to
walk into the stadium, mount rainiers in the distance. It's
just gorgeous. It is just a gorgeous location to watch
a college football game at Union Bay. Union Bay, thank you.
(50:52):
And it is just a spectacular place to watch a
football game at. People have said autsin Stadium and Gene
is somewhat similar in that regard, but I mean, all
indications were it was just it was loud. It was
Saturday night. And again, as I said, I have not
had the fortune to be to that one yet. I've
(51:13):
been to well you pick a stadium pretty much been there,
but not that one, and but it was loud. So
we'll get we'll get Tony's thoughts on all of that
and exactly what just if the feel about the loss
is different this year than it would have been this
time last year, because if you think about I said,
(51:33):
let him and Rowe for Tony, I'm sorry, Buckeye Uddle,
he'd beat right for Bucky Huddle. I don't know why
I was singing, let him in row, but buckye Uddle,
Tony would drive over here, knock me around. But it's
just I think there's that, yeah, we lost, but feeling
if that makes any sense to you, that while there
(51:54):
are issues that popped up with the team, there are
still though the still that fallback or that failsafe if
you will, well, there's twelve teams going to the playoff
if we went out. But the only negative to that,
I will say is if you win out and lose
the Big Ten championship game, then suddenly you fall in
(52:15):
a kind of a gray area, and that could be
very entertaining on that that selection.
Speaker 4 (52:22):
It's interesting, though, because Ohio State is not just trying
to get to the playoffs, No they're trying to win it.
They're trying to win, and so that attitude, while I
understand it and is reasonable, is not. It's like, those
are not the goals for Ohio State, just getting to
If Ohio State doesn't get to the twelve team playoff,
(52:44):
a lot of people would probably lose their jobs and
the middle of Ohio would probably start smoldering. So I
don't obviously they're gonna get to the playoffs. I think
that is. I mean, here's the thing with they're gonna
they have to pick the twelve teams. It's not like
(53:05):
if you win your your automatic division. Yeah, there's no
automatic wildfires. The people who make these games happen and
will be choosing these games understand the brand that Ohio
State is and also the pushback if Ohio State for whatever,
Unless Ohio State loses the rest of their games, there
(53:26):
would be no reason for Ohio State not to be
in the playoff though, because there's a there's an understanding
that they still have a lot of the talent in
college football.
Speaker 3 (53:36):
If everything holds to form the rest of the way out,
there's the distinct possibility you could have a first round
matchup of let's say Tennessee at Ohio State. Yeah, I
mean that's a real possibility. And as you said, I
don't think the folks who run college football, or more
(53:56):
to the point, the TV folks people are going to say, nah,
give us Boise stated, No, they want tennis. They want
that game exactly. They want that game. And that's that's
where this is where that this part of it I
think pretty much solidifies. As you said, let's unless they
would somehow lose two more games. Yeah, because I think
(54:18):
right now, as I said a lot, as I said
before we we I joke often about James James Franklin
at Penn State being a guy who can coach his
team completely out of a victory, and he's done it
numerous times. Ohio State has to go over there, and
I don't think it's going to be a well, it
will probably My guess is that will probably be moved
(54:41):
to an eat the seven thirty game, unless Fox comes
in as there's no wait a minute, we want it
for being I mean, they've done it, so it will
be one or the other, I think. But that's a
hard state college is a hard place to go in
and win.
Speaker 4 (54:55):
There has been a lot of upsets exactly by lesser
and that and that's when the question.
Speaker 3 (55:01):
Really that's when the edge starts to pop up a
little bit more. If you hit a second loss, that's
why the first one is okay. But you can't have
that second one, then that's when things start to get
a little dicey. So we'll see. Uh, this is interesting.
Earlier this morning, I was I was surfing on Twitter
and there was a picture posted on the Synchrony Car
(55:24):
Synchrony Care credit card site and it's a picture of
the actress Amanda Seafred, who is in been in many movies,
and it's a picture of her with her dog. Now,
Kelly has her dog in studio with us today. What's
the dog's name? Is a great little dog, little foot.
There's a picture of Amanda Seaffred and her dog Finn,
(55:45):
and the caption of the picture reads Amanda Seaffred and
then a brother's It says left and her dog Finn.
Is it really necessary to identify that he's on the left?
I was sure. I didn't know, because like there was
a picture a couple of years ago. And again this
(56:05):
is not political, so don't start texting or anything, but
there was a picture a few years ago of then
President Trump on the balcony of the White House with
the Easter Bunny, and the picture was the same thing
President Trump left, And then who's doing this? Oh?
Speaker 5 (56:24):
Man?
Speaker 3 (56:25):
I mean you actually had to identify that she's on
the left and that he was on the left. We
don't we're not smart enough to figure that out on
our own.
Speaker 5 (56:35):
How might have fallen? That's tough though.
Speaker 4 (56:37):
I mean, you know, you look at that picture and
you're like, is that girl Finn?
Speaker 3 (56:40):
Or is that girl?
Speaker 5 (56:46):
I just couldn't tell you.
Speaker 3 (56:47):
I know, I saw I reposted a A friend of mine,
Jordan Bo's, texted back, I find this far funnier than
I probably should. Maybe I'm just sleep deprived. Yeah I
get that, but it's yeah, it's it's it's fun. I
just I just found that funny. I looked at it. Well,
why do we have to identify her? It's painfully obvious.
I don't think anybody went, oh, that's the the actress on.
Speaker 5 (57:10):
The right, No, no one, No one was sure.
Speaker 3 (57:15):
Fan Pole up today, what's your reaction to the trade
that is sent Browns wide receiver Mari Cooper to Buffalo?
Is the deal long overdue? Is it a bad trade.
Is it a signal that the Browns are giving up
on the season or is it simply a good deal
and a good move and right now it signifies the
Browns are giving up on the season. Seventy two of
the vote going that direction. A couple of responses from
(57:39):
social media on our fan Pole question today concerns about
let's see, where was the one I wanted to wanted
to bring up here? Rob says no mention of Cooper's
drop passes this season as being a part of why.
And I think that that's that's a valid part of
this to ring up because he did have a significant
(58:02):
number of drops and that all seemed to.
Speaker 5 (58:04):
Be crucial to every single one of them.
Speaker 3 (58:06):
And he's had that before in Dallas. That was one
of the knocks against him in Dallas was in ability
to hang out of the football And if you remember,
that was one of the knocks on Jamar Chase coming
out of LSU. Yeah, so he could hang on to
a pass. That first training camp he dropped about everything
thrown to him.
Speaker 5 (58:21):
He just had to get up to speed.
Speaker 3 (58:23):
In the first game against the Vikings, he called like
a seventy five yard touchdown pass kind of ended all that,
but nonetheless that's been one of the big knocks on Cooper.
Another comment from social media, Any chance we can get
Josh Allen in return? I haven't seen the details that
for Brick. Yeah, well, nice try. That's not happening. That's
(58:47):
that's not happening. Ali says, not excusing Cooper's play. He
has a history of drops going back to Dallas. As
we mentioned, he does have some Cleveland receiving records. Obviously,
he was frustrated with his contract and the fact that
we have a quarterback that can't get him the foot ball.
We were going to trade him at end of the year. Anyway,
doing it now just means they have tossed in towel
on the season.
Speaker 6 (59:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (59:05):
I mean also, if his contract is up, you.
Speaker 3 (59:08):
Get he's not one of the free agents though he's
his contract isn't up. Uh, he wants a new one.
He wants an extension. He want wanted an extension.
Speaker 5 (59:16):
I'm sure he still wants an extension.
Speaker 3 (59:18):
Does he probably does? Well, that's up to Buffalo now
to deal with that.
Speaker 4 (59:23):
But I mean they they should have the room. Yeah, no,
the billow to extend him.
Speaker 3 (59:31):
Yeah, I mean the they cleaned house a little bit
in the in the off season. Stefon Diggs and some
others they.
Speaker 4 (59:36):
Shift and and they and honestly, the Bills need a
another like they need a surefire receiver right now. Kean Coleman,
he's a rookie. It's a lot to ask any rookie
to hey, could you come in and replace Stefon Diggs. No, No,
I can't. No, almost no one can do that. So
(59:57):
having Amari Cooper there will give Keon cole In some
room to breathe and some room to grow. He's a rookie.
We get so caught up on how good rookies can
be now that we forget.
Speaker 3 (01:00:07):
That because they all play so much.
Speaker 4 (01:00:09):
But there's a lot of people that do really need
the time to grow, and it's a faster, more intense
sport at this level.
Speaker 5 (01:00:18):
We should give them some time.
Speaker 3 (01:00:19):
Well you're you're right there. But I think the other
thing too, is with uh Cooper, how often have we
seen this a guy who desperately needs a breath of
fresh air. And it would not surprise me to see
him go to Buffalo and suddenly become what he was
last year with Joe Flacco, where he caught everything thrown
in his direction.
Speaker 4 (01:00:39):
Yeah, I really, I really could see it. And I
think that Josh Allen would would also need that breath
of fresh air.
Speaker 3 (01:00:46):
Oh absolutely absolutely. But I think if you're Amari Cooper,
you're you're already to Buffalo. Yeah, I mean he's already there.
It's only like four hours from Cleveland anyway, But still.
Speaker 5 (01:00:55):
I bet I bet he's already.
Speaker 3 (01:00:57):
There the moment the word came down. Yeah, he's left
everything in clay. I'll come back again it later. Just
make sure you lock the doors. I'll be back for
it later four or fifteen, the time when we come
back with talking a little Ohio State football, our friend
Tony German visits with us as we talk about guy football.
It's the press box Fox Sports nine eighty wa.
Speaker 1 (01:01:32):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
three seven, buy three one six one seven zero the
press box on Fox Sports nine eighty w on E.
Speaker 3 (01:01:45):
And welcome back to the program Fox Sports nine eighty
w one. This is the press box with you right
up until five o'clock today here on nine eighty wn E.
We have a fan pull up for you. This afternoon's
dealing with the deal the Browns maid today sending Amari
Cooper to the Buffalo Bills. So we're asking you today
your thoughts on that and the reaction to it, and
(01:02:07):
so far today the reaction has been mainly one of
its The Browns are simply giving up on the season.
Seventy one percent kind of fall into that category, a
bad trade, fourteen percent, long overdue deal gets nine percent,
and four percent of you say we like the deal,
it's a good move. So there we have that. So
(01:02:28):
getting that pull up for another twenty five to thirty
minutes or so, so you could vote on that up
until about four forty five. Right, Let's switch gears talk
a little. High State football Bluckeyes were losers for the
first time this season as they traveled out to the
West Coast on Saturday and lost to Oregon thirty two
to thirty one. And what was really a heck of
a college football game. He was there, the lead writer,
(01:02:50):
lead beat writer for bluckye Huddle. Our friend Tony Gerdman
visits with us this afternoon on the Live line. Tony,
was it as loud as it appeared to be at
Austin Stadium on Saturday night?
Speaker 9 (01:03:00):
In fact, it was I keep saying it's the most
it's the most sustained, sustained noise I've ever experienced at
a football game. It was. It was really really impressive,
and the fans stepped up every step the way, even
when Oregon was facing some big their downs. The Ohio
State fans were trying to give their all, and there's
a good number of Buckeye fans there was. It was
(01:03:21):
an incredible environment, and you know, after the loss, I
knew the people in the live shows weren't going to
want to hear about it. But it was a fantastic game,
great environment. I would encourage anybody to go catch a
big game there because it's not the biggest place, but
it's just sustained noise and it was fantastic.
Speaker 3 (01:03:40):
Tony. We've talked about this on our show a couple
of times since then. Was there a different and maybe
for lack of a better term, a different feel about
this loss than if it occurred at this time last
year because of the expanded playoff format this year?
Speaker 9 (01:03:55):
Well, you know, I think no, well, yes and no.
There's still complete anger and you know, it keeps thinking
to myself that nobody hates the Buckeyes like Ohio State
fans do, and and there were some angry Ohio State
fans after this one. But you know, after a couple
of days of reflection, you realize that win or lose
this game, while it felt, you know, it's you lived
(01:04:19):
and died with it with each moment, but you still
have the ability to live and even if it was
still a four team playoff, you're still alive, like you
can still win out, you still control your own destiny.
So I think that alone has maybe allowed some reflection.
But there are still a segment of Buckeye fans that
we'll see this past game and think that you know,
(01:04:40):
they're they're never going to be over able to overcome
a top five opponent or a fourth quarter or you know,
or Ryan Day. And I understand some of that, but
also it's it's really tough to beat teams, you know,
top five teams in their own home, and you know,
this is this is just one game. Came down to
the last minute, last couple of seconds, I guess, last
(01:05:01):
second if you want, and it got away from the
buck Eyes. But I was it was a really really
good game. And you know, we said it before the season,
you probably said it as well, they'll probably play more
than just once this year Oregon in Ohio state.
Speaker 3 (01:05:15):
Right, I think you're right on that one. Tony Gerdam
been visiting with his lead beat writer for Buckeye Huddle
covers the Highest State was at Oregon on Saturday night
for the Buckeyes and Ducks. During the broadcast on radio.
I was driving back from Ohio to win at Central
Michigan on Saturday night and I heard I thought you
went to ross byork on at halftime and he was
asked about the game kind of a similar type question,
(01:05:36):
but his response was, well, keep in mind this game
is more about seeding than it is about anything else.
Do you agree with that? And was that a fair
Was that a fair assessment?
Speaker 9 (01:05:48):
You know, boy, that's that's a pretty interesting question. And
I think is that how we have to start looking
at stuff notes about seating? You know, I think right
now just about winning or losing, and then after the
fact it becomes about seating. But I guess with his
you know, thirty thousand view on things, he's correct in
(01:06:09):
that way, and that this is a good win for somebody.
And still it's as they say in the SEC, it's
a good loss as well. For Ohio State, but there's
still more to be done. The Big Ten Championship game
will be the ultimate seaedar of these. I think even
you'll say a twelve to one, Ohio State is still
the one or two seed overall. So I think it's
(01:06:31):
too early to be about seating. But Ohio State now
can't afford to you know, certainly can't afford to lose
to Penn State. And really what if there are a
couple of teams that could still go undefeated in the
Big Ten and keep Ohio State out of the Big
Ten Championship game. But it'd be pretty surprising if somebody
does it. Like what I don't know, is it like
Illinois and somebody else may have an opportunity to do so.
(01:06:53):
But yeah, I mean it's it's seating a little bit,
but I think the ultimate seating is still to come.
Speaker 3 (01:06:59):
I think, yeah, you're probably spot on with that one.
Let's go to the game itself. What from watching it
again and having a chance to the overview, as you said,
now a couple of days afterwards, to look back at it,
what concerned you most about the way If it's fair
to say, you know, you lose a one point game
with and have the ball with under a minute left.
But is there anything that concerned you about about Ohio
(01:07:21):
State in the loss?
Speaker 9 (01:07:23):
Yeah, I mean certainly giving up that many pass yards
and being I guess unprepared for Oregon attack, and and
what Oregon did with in the passing game was something
they really hadn't done. They went deep a lot, and
they went deep to the right sideline, which they hadn't
done I don't believe at all all season, and they
attacked whoever was over there, most specifically Denzel Berg. So
(01:07:44):
I think maybe the preparation in the game plan is
it concern. I know people are talking certainly talking about
what the last five losses for Iron Day, the defense
is not forced a punt in the fourth quarter. Haven't
gone back to verify all of those, but it was
certainly the case in this one. Then it's been the
case again Michigan, and not being able to force punts
in the fourth quarter and get off the field when
(01:08:04):
your offense is doing enough is a concern certainly. But
watching this one, there were times where it felt like
Ohio State was hanging on for dear life, and then
they would get up by a touchdown and it's like, well, okay,
you know, so they were able to overcome that, but
then Oregon would answer right back, and there's a there's
a way this game is played and Ohio State loses
(01:08:28):
by seventeen just because they get stopped. They stop Oregon
on the goal line, they the cosmeric interception slash catch
turns into a touchdown drive for Ohio State. Maybe that's
an interception. You take seven points off the board, you
had the Oregon missing a field goal. They get a
little funky with their extra points, like Oregon left some
(01:08:48):
points off the board and on the field, and so
did Ohio State. But you know, I think there's so
many just what ifs for both of these teams that
you know, you play this game ten times, you can
have five different winners. Was two different winners five different times? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:09:05):
Yeah? Exactly? What was Oregon better than people maybe gave
them credit for, because obviously the way they struggled early
against Boise State in the Idaho game to start the season,
I think lolled a lot of Ohio State fans into thinking, well,
they're not that good. Were they better than everyone thought? Yeah?
Speaker 9 (01:09:21):
I think so. Defensively in terms of stopping Ohio State's run.
The buck guys had two especially two long runs, a
fifty three yarder and a seventeen yard back to back.
That was seventy yards of their rushing in the first
or second quarter, and they had seventy the rest of
the game. I think they were twelve for nineteen in
the second in the second half alone, So they pretty
(01:09:43):
much shut down the Ohio State running game and then
themselves throwing the ball as downfield as much as they had.
That was a surprise to Ohio State, and the success
that they had was even more of a surprise. Ohio
State had an allow a thirty yard pass play all
season long, and they gave up four in this one.
So you know, they a lot to learn from this one.
(01:10:04):
I think they certainly. It looks like they took Dylan
Gabriel his arm strength or his deep shot ability. They
underestimated it and he made them pay. And there are
too many times where maybe Denzel Burke was a little
too aggressive and looking into the backfield and not worrying
about his receiver responsibility.
Speaker 3 (01:10:26):
Tony Gerdaman visiting with us. We're talking about the Ohio
State game on Saturday night where the Buck Eyes were
losers at Oregon by the final of thirty two to
thirty one and Tony visiting with US series. The lead
writer a beat writer for buck Eye. Huddle's been covering
Ohio State for many, many years and did a great
job covering the buck Eyes from the Ohio State side
of things. What was there don't like about the way
(01:10:46):
Ohio State played in the game Saturday?
Speaker 9 (01:10:49):
You know, I think the fact that they kept fighting,
they kept answering in a very hostile environment. Will Howard
was completed eighty percent of his passes three hundred and
twenty six yards two touchdowns, So I think that that
was good. And they were able to just continue to
move the ball, and they didn't ever like said they're
holding up for dear life, but they were able to
hold on and never got away from them, So I
(01:11:11):
think that's good. You saw him, Mecca buk and Jeremiah Smith.
You saw them get the tight ends involved. You know,
the Quinn John Judkins came in kind of with a
little bit of a hand injury, so I don't know
how much that impacted his ability. Eleven for twenty three
on the day that you would expect certainly more than that,
So I think getting to see what you saw out
of Will Howard. And it's funny we went in saying
(01:11:34):
that he he has one of two plays per game
that he'd like to have back, and he had those
two in this one, and the last one being the
run at the end. But overall, I think you can't
be too upset with the way he played, as I said,
eighty percent and kept him ahead of the chains. And again,
this was a really really loud environment, and it was
(01:11:57):
it was a tough environment, and I think he answered
the call and just ran out of that last one second. Basically.
Speaker 3 (01:12:05):
Yeah. The other thing about I think about it, too,
is it's okay to just admit that it was a
it was a heck of a college football game, and
you came up one point short and let's move on.
I mean, I don't there's anything wrong with kind of coming
to grips of that, is there?
Speaker 9 (01:12:18):
No, there isn't unless you're a perfect human being and
you need you hold everybody else to the same standard
that you hold yourself, which is you know, that's that's
the majority of people that I'm hearing from, basically, But yeah,
it's it's a one point loss on the road. In
a back and forth game. I mean, I've said this
(01:12:39):
about the Ohio State Michigan situation, the rivalry that nobody,
no fan base is entitled to that series. Nobody is
entitled to a win every single year in the series,
and nobody, no Buckeye fan is entitled to big time
wins on the road randomly, you know, from from game
to game like this is all. These are all college
(01:13:01):
kids playing and working towards this and sometimes you win
and sometimes you lose, but then you know, you got
to get back to practice the next day. They're not
giving up some Mckeye fans maybe, but you know, a
one point loss on the road to what is now
the number two team in the nation. Yeah, that stuff happens.
It's nothing. It's not a fireable offense exactly.
Speaker 3 (01:13:23):
Let's go back a little bit to surrounding the game. Now.
You had talked earlier about there is the likelihood that
these teams could probably see each other again at some
point because of the current format with the Big Ten
going away from divisions and whatnot. Any other aspects of
this for Ohio State is one more loss. Is it
(01:13:46):
excusable or not excusable? But is it survivable? And then
making the College Football Playoff.
Speaker 9 (01:13:54):
Yeah, well, you know, and you look at what that
loss would be and most likely would be at Penn State,
which will probably be number three when Ohio State plays
them in a couple of weeks. So yeah, two losses
against on the road against the number three team each
time they played is will be will be enough to
get them in provided other things, you know, out of
(01:14:16):
the blue don't happen. I think you're gonna see plenty
of two loss teams, non conference title playing teams in
the playoffs for the foreseeable future. And if Ohio State
loses to Penn State and loses to Oregon, you're gonna
be hard pressed to find two better losses for a
two loss team. But one other thing I've said throughout
(01:14:36):
this is that the teams that don't make it to
the conference championships should not jump in over teams that do.
And say, you know, if a Penn State team gets
their second loss or you know, in the conference championship game,
they should still be ahead of a High State or
even in a team of the conference championship game gets
(01:14:57):
their third loss, they should still be in ahead of
the two loss team that didn't get in. You should
not be punished for making the conference championship game. But
I think Ohio State would still be fine barring something
completely unforeseen that somebody going for a ride and you know,
leaving like five one loss SEC teams, right, and then
they get their pick of the letter.
Speaker 3 (01:15:17):
There, And I think that opens up some very exciting
possibilities as far as some of these first round playoff games,
which that's an entirely different conversation for another time. But
the part about that, I know you're as big a
fan of this as I am. I mean, to me,
that's almost mouthwatering to think of Tennessee at Ohio State
or LSU at I mean, the possibilities are endless, and
(01:15:41):
they're exciting to think about too, aren't they.
Speaker 9 (01:15:43):
Yeah, I mean that's we've all been clamoring for home
playoff games. At least they gave us the first round,
and so if that happens for Ohio State, I would
hope the fan base would would have un given up
on the season and be back in the shoe for that.
I think I think the majority of fans would the
book of minority fans would just continue to complain from Twitter,
(01:16:04):
But yeah, I think it's it's going to be a
scene wherever it is for a number of schools. And
we're halfway through the season now. I'm not wishing anything away,
but I know we're all looking forward to what that
first round looks like because we have we have no
clue what it's going to feel like.
Speaker 3 (01:16:18):
Absolutely. Tony Gerdman, lee beat writer for Bucky Huddle, always
appreciates your time, my friend. I'm glad you got back
to say from the West coast and that you've still
got your hearing apparently because it was pretty.
Speaker 9 (01:16:27):
Loud it was. It was awesome. The press box is
wide open, it's open there.
Speaker 3 (01:16:32):
Oh wow.
Speaker 9 (01:16:32):
We got to experience the whole thing, so it was awesome.
Speaker 3 (01:16:34):
All right, toy, I appreciate your time, likes for joining
us today.
Speaker 9 (01:16:37):
Yeah, see you guys all right.
Speaker 3 (01:16:38):
Tony Gerdman, lead beat writer for BUCKYE. Huddle. You can
find him on at Buckeye Weekly the podcast as well too.
And I like this comment about how unless you're perfect,
as a lot of people seem to think that they
are and can't understand how you can lose one game,
Well that's you just have to roll with it.
Speaker 5 (01:16:55):
And I'm really close to perfect.
Speaker 3 (01:16:58):
Well we we we know that Kelly, you were not
part of that part of the conversation. That wasn't yeah,
that wasn't anything directed to you at all. Four thirty
four is the time, man, good show, let's good show.
Let's get a break in here quickly. It's the press box,
Fox Sports nine to eighty. Nobody going to.
Speaker 1 (01:17:53):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
three seven buy three one six one seven zero the
press box on Fox Sports nine eighty w O N.
Speaker 3 (01:18:06):
And again we thank our friend Tony Gerdaman for visiting
with us here in the press box Fox Sports nine
eighty w O and he always enjoyed Tony visits. Tony's
visits brings out a lot of good points about things
and things you might not have considered and overlooked. When
you think about a game like Saturday Night, for example,
where there were a lot of things that could have
gone either way in that you lose by one point.
That may sound odd to say, but the one point
(01:18:29):
though that he brought up I thought was very interesting
was the the Will Howard one where he has he
has a history of having one or two plays in
a game that he would love to have back, and
he had two of them on Saturday night.
Speaker 5 (01:18:38):
And that'll do it.
Speaker 4 (01:18:39):
Yeah, that's I mean, that's every quarterback, not I mean,
maybe not every quarterback, but most quarterbacks. There's I mean,
and I think in most games there's a few plays that,
especially in a close game, that are are the that's
the game. It's a third down, it's a fumble, a
you know, someone converting a third and fifteen. It's those
(01:19:03):
little and it might not be in the fourth quarter,
it might have been at the end of the third
and the momentum and all these other things come into
play that you're just like, well, yeah, we almost had them.
And that's really how it felt watching the buck Eyes
they I mean, really it was the defense because when
they got the ball back in the fourth and went
(01:19:25):
back down the field to take the leads, as supposedly
one of the best teams in the in college football,
you should be able to maintain a lead for one
minute and fifty six seconds or whatever.
Speaker 3 (01:19:43):
It was right right, And again, as you said, I
agree that there are there are plays in every quarterback
goes back and looks at and went, oh, yeah, why
didn't I do this? Why didn't I do that? And
that's gonna be said. Yeah, I think some quarterbacks obviously
have more than Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:20:01):
I mean I literally just watched on ESPN they were
showing a play of Aaron Rodgers' uh turnover late in
the game last night, and there was a guy a
checkdown just seven seven yards in front of him. If
he throws that ball, they get a first down. We
maybe have a work maybe having a whole different conversation
(01:20:24):
today about you know, some of these trades that happened
and moves that got made.
Speaker 5 (01:20:30):
And I mean I'm sure that in thought.
Speaker 3 (01:20:33):
Yeah, that little indecision or bad decision affects this, this, this, this,
this and this, and yeah, you're right, it can really
turn a lot of things into a different direction.
Speaker 5 (01:20:44):
All right.
Speaker 3 (01:20:44):
As we mentioned earlier today over at the Dayton Marriott,
they Fly in to the Hoop had its press conference
to reveal the field of teams that will be participating
in this year's event again, which comes up in January.
And it is, as I said, for as far as
high school basketball, certainly in the Midwest is concerned, this
event is without a doubt one of the best going.
Eric Horseman as the organizer and as he will tell
(01:21:05):
you It is an event that has just really taken
off over the last few years. The amount of interest,
the amount of talent that shows up for this from
not only Ohio but from around the nation really make
it something to be from this area, to be proud
of and to want your team to be a part of.
We've already heard from a couple of coaches whose teams
(01:21:27):
will be in it. And after the event wound down today,
I had a chance to spend a couple of moments
with our friend Eric Horseman. Number one, Let's talk about
the field this year. I mean, you had some great
fields and this how does this one rank?
Speaker 2 (01:21:38):
I tend to sound like a broken record when I
say to this, but this is the best year ever.
You know, it's not a lie when we look at
the numbers right now. Literally, I've only gotten half the
rosters and we are at ten five stars and over
thirty four stars and just the rosters I have so
far from the team perspective, and these are preseason rankings,
(01:22:01):
so you can take them with the green of salt,
but out of the top twenty teams in Ohio, we
have sixteen of them that will be here, and out
of the top twenty teams in the entire nation, we'll
have five of them here, so you be the judge.
But that sounds pretty.
Speaker 3 (01:22:14):
Good to move and that speaks, I think, to this event,
doesn't it, Because when you can get that kind of
town to come in here, people no Number one, they've
been treated well. They know what this event means. And
it brings people back, doesn't it well?
Speaker 2 (01:22:26):
Case in Point, And again I say this very humbly.
We've been blessed and it's because of the team that
we put into place, and really, like I said in
the press conference, it's a family anymore. But honestly, when
we get done with the event every year, like in January,
it's amazing the teams that will come up to me
and say, we're already putting in our request if we
(01:22:46):
can be in it for next year. And you know,
and that speaks volumes when they had such a good
experience here. Case in Point, like you heard spoken here today,
Faith Family Academy. They're a three time state champ out
of Texas. They are loaded, and they were up here
last year for two games, and they go, we want
back in so bad. We will just take one game
(01:23:07):
and they're gonna fly halfway across the country just to
play one game in this event.
Speaker 3 (01:23:11):
So I feel good.
Speaker 2 (01:23:12):
Then how cool is it when you have Jermaine O'Neill
x Indianapolis pacer that's now, you know, heading up a
team another team out of Texas called Dynamic Prep. His
son is a four star there. They reached out and
they wanted to be a part of this, So it's
just kind of neat. I never in a million years
would have imagined the network that I've been making. But
(01:23:34):
I tell people, the hardest part of this, the hardest
part is literally when you have over one hundred teams
that reach out and want to be in it, and
you've got to figure out how to narrow it down
to thirty four. I mean, we turn away good teams
and I feel bad about doing that, but there's just
not enough time.
Speaker 3 (01:23:49):
Exactly because all the other things about today. You can
see the look on the players faces, the exciting the
excitement that I think a lot of them some of
the coaches I talked to said that we can go
play today if we had to. But I know that
smile it is right every the smile of your face,
doesn't it.
Speaker 2 (01:24:02):
Well, let's put it this way, you were here for
the press conference. It is early October, it is in
the middle of football season, and we have over one
hundred people here at a press conference, and everybody's jazzed
for basketball that's not going to happen until January. So again,
very blessed and humbly speaking saying that. But that just
tells you right there on how some of the people
(01:24:24):
look towards being in the event.
Speaker 3 (01:24:25):
You mentioned the importance of the event and what it
means to people, but it also speaks volumes about Dayton
area basketball, doesn't it, and how much people love to
be a part of what goes on in our area
with basketball.
Speaker 2 (01:24:35):
Hey, I live here, so I can say this Dayton
is not a tourist destination in the middle of January.
So to be able to have over a million dollar
economic impact, and I, like I said, I like to
call us the pre pre NCA March Madness here in January.
To be able to have that kind of an economic
impact for the hotels, the restaurants, the gas stations, the shopping,
(01:24:58):
the airport by flying all these teams in and their
families and their fans and what have you. I mean,
we have thirty four teams descending upon Dayton, and you're
not going to find too much more talented nucleus of
high school basketball anywhere in the country.
Speaker 3 (01:25:13):
Some of the coaches I talked to is the once
from Ohio I asked about to change to divisions that
you're going to seven divisions, and almost to a man,
they said to me, an event like this is great
for us because it gives us an opportunity to kind
of see where we stand a month from tournament time.
And that's one of the big parts of this, isn't
it well?
Speaker 2 (01:25:29):
And that's what I love, And I love the relationships
that I built with these coaches when they come in
and they say, listen, of course they want to win
the game, but they look at this as their pre
tournament run and whether they get their bucks kicked like
you heard from some of them that thought that they
were all of that, or whether they play hard, that's
just kind of a retuning, a refocus to say, hey,
(01:25:50):
the playoffs here here in a month, and it knocks
people's breches down a little bit if they haven't handed
to them. So they're either going to play a team
that they wouldn't normally play throughout the season, or they're
going to get a chance to play a jug.
Speaker 3 (01:26:01):
Eric horseman with the Flying to the Hoop tournament. And
that last point I think is a very valid one
for teams and for every team really that plays in
this because you're about that point of the season for everybody.
But we kind of kept at Ohio generated obviously with
the tournament about a month away. By the time you
get to that, and how teams can start to see, well,
maybe we're not doing this so well against the zone
(01:26:22):
and we're going to see a lot of that in
this event, or we're not going to see this kind
of athletic talent when we get to the tournament, so
that helps us be ready for that. So yeah, it
has a lot of advantages, and that's why these events
have just exploded all across the college or the high
school basketball map, but in the state of Ohio, this
(01:26:43):
one is the one. And as you heard him say,
there are already people saying the moment they're done with
this one, hey, we want to come back next year.
Don't forget us, save us a spot. We want to
be here next year. Because they're treated very well by
the folks. It's a Flying to the Hoop it's a
fantastic event, and we'll have some fun with that as
well too when we get a little bit closer to it.
Right here on the press box. Forty seven is the time.
We'll continue along here Fox Sports nine eighty w ola.
Speaker 1 (01:27:03):
Name get on the press box called Marty Now at
nine to three seven buy three one six one seven
(01:27:26):
zero the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN.
Speaker 3 (01:27:32):
We're back with you four p fifty one tomorrow in
the program we have visiting with us talk a little
college football friend. Bill Bender from the Sporting News will
join us, and then on Thursday we'll go even more
in depth into the Bengals and the Browns. Our number one,
Damon Wolf from Dogs by Nature will join us. Our
number two Anthony Cosenza, Orange and Black Illustrated, and the
podcast will be with us in our number two. So
we'll break it down hour by hour heading into Sundays.
(01:27:55):
What some folks it's been called the Battle of Ohio.
Some folks are calling it a pillow fight. Well, we'll see.
I think either one could kind of be descriptive. But
we'll get into that coming up again on Thursday in
the program. Of course, again just circling back to the
big news of the day. A Mauri Cooper traded by
the Browns to the Buffalo Bills and Devonte Adams traded
(01:28:18):
from the Raiders to the Jets.
Speaker 5 (01:28:19):
So those are both better situations for their wide receivers.
Speaker 3 (01:28:23):
Oh yeah, I think so. Some baseball news, the Cleveland
Guardians have removed Alex Cobb from their American League Championship
roster injured last night in Game one. They replaced him
with right hand or Ben Lively, so Cobb is ineligible
to be on the team's World Series roster should they
make it that far. Lively that the Guardians and wins.
(01:28:44):
During the regular season with thirteen he had a three
point eight to one earned run average. The move acquired
approval from Major League Baseball because only injured players are
allowed to be removed from the roster. I know a
lot of people kind of questioned Stephen Votes mindset in
starting Cobb in the six to two loss to the
Yankees yesterday. He said afterwards that Cobb's left hip tightened
(01:29:06):
up and he was dealing with back spasms. The transaction
concludes a turbulent season for Cobb, who had made just
five starts for the Guardians. After being acquired from the
Giants three during the regular season, a couple in the playoffs.
Cobb was an All Star last year, did not make
his season debut until August the twenty third or August
the ninth rather of this season. He was zero to
two with a seven point nine to four ERA in
(01:29:28):
his two postseason starts with the Guardians. Lively didn't make
the Guardians roster and hasn't pitched. I didn't make their
postseason roster, I should say, and hasn't pitched since the
next last day of the regular season. He has never
pitched in the postseason. So but back on the roster
for the Guardians as they get ready for Game number
two tonight at Yankee Stadium, and the way these series
(01:29:49):
break down, yes, you obviously you want to win every game,
but tonight, I think almost becomes kind of mandatory for Cleveland.
They got to have this one tonight. If they go
home down two, then everything there's a possibility doesn't come
back to Yankee Stadium. Yeah, and the Yankees are going
to be rolling at that point. I mean, I know
(01:30:09):
Progressive Field will be loud and ready for what's to come,
But I don't think he want to be down to
oh uh and I mean there and and if you uh,
if you do fall behind two, oh, if you do,
if you do, you're obviously those numbers start to really
tail against you dramatically as far as the ability to
(01:30:34):
come from behind and win those series that it's happened,
but it's rather infrequent. Guardian Yankees tonight with the first
pitch in the game slated for seven thirty eight. Game
three will be today's Tuesday. Game three will be Thursday night,
Game four will be on Friday night. Game five will
(01:30:55):
be on Saturday, and then if need be games six
and seven back at Yankee Stadium Monday and Tuesday. So
that's again, that's why the importance of this for Cleveland tonight,
because you get the next three at home. While as
as I said, if you get this one tonight, I
don't know, I don't know that it happens. But on
(01:31:15):
the flip side, there's the possibility the series doesn't go
back to Yankee Stadium. Absolutely, So I mean on either
side that's possibility. Yeah, But if you're Cleveland, then you
have a chance.
Speaker 4 (01:31:24):
Yeah, you want to you want to definitely steal one
from New York.
Speaker 6 (01:31:28):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (01:31:29):
While they're home. Oh yeah, if you're the Guardians, Uh,
it's it. I think the momentum shift would be just
very very heavily in favor of Cleveland at this time
because right now, the Yankees, I mean even I've been
seeing their fans on X or Twitter and they're feeling themselves.
They the momentum is very much in the Bronx right now.
Speaker 3 (01:31:51):
It sure is, and there's no doubt that the worst
thing for those of us who aren't New York fans.
In any stretch of the imagination we could have as
a subway series.
Speaker 11 (01:31:59):
Yeah, and possibility, distinct possibility Yankees Mets that would thank you,
Guardians Dodgers series would be interesting.
Speaker 3 (01:32:11):
I agree with that. Interesting. Guardians Mets would be interesting.
Just this, just don't give us to New York team now.
I mean the TV ratings in New York would be
through the roof, but maybe not everywhere else. Columbus Blue
Jackets play their home opener tonight, and again it's a
home opener filled with emotion when they get on the
ice tonight against the Florida Panthers. Of course, Uh, the
(01:32:32):
Johnny Gudreau tragedy still echoes with the team, right now
as they get ready to play their home opener tonight,
both teams, the Jackets and the Panthers, and pregame skates
are wearing a good row jerseys and uh, just keeping
that memory alive. And they'll play in Columbus tonight, and
again it's just to me there. There are obviously a
(01:32:56):
lot of tragedies and sad stories surrounding the world of sports,
and they happen all too frequently, I think, but this
one just has a different feel to it, doesn't it.
I mean, everything that surrounds it. He and his brother
they're killed by a drunk driver the night before their
sister was to be married. And it just the the
(01:33:18):
the agony and the pain. I mean, you can just
it's it's palpable. Right now, it's still there. I don't
think it's gone anywhere. And as they try to and
it's all around the National Hockey League, it's just not
in Columbus, Pittsburgh, you name a rink. They have done
things to honor his memory and his brother's memory as
(01:33:40):
to with with what happened, and it's it's just the sadness.
As I said, it's just palpable. You just can't get
away from it. And the other thing about it is, too,
is every time you do this, while it's great that
you're doing this.
Speaker 5 (01:33:57):
It also brings it all right to the front.
Speaker 3 (01:34:01):
And I'm not saying you shouldn't be doing this. Don't
mist understand what I'm saying, but it just it just
brings back all of that agony one more time. But
it's I'm glad that the teams are doing it around
the league and that that's the different thing about hockey.
Hockey just hockey is. I mean, these guys may go
(01:34:22):
out on the ice and I mean there could be
a brawl in a third period and these guys could
just wail on each other for twenty minutes, and but
after the game, hockey just is this is just a
different feel Hockey players just I don't I don't know
how to explain it other than just to say they're
a different breed. Hockey players are a different breed and
they have some sort of bond between them. They all,
(01:34:44):
as I said, you go through a grueling seven game
playoff series and you can't wait to knock the guy
into into the boards. And what happens after the game
You line up and you shake hands. Yeah, it's just
and and that's why I think.
Speaker 5 (01:35:00):
I don't think it's the canadianness of it all.
Speaker 3 (01:35:03):
Yeah, they are a lot nicer than we are, a
little nicer.
Speaker 5 (01:35:07):
A sports always involved, like drinking beer right after the game.
Speaker 3 (01:35:10):
So and your point is no, I mean, I say
you have a problem. That's good.
Speaker 5 (01:35:17):
I'm into it. I think that's a very Canadian thing.
Speaker 3 (01:35:22):
Now already, like my mind has already gone to strange Brew.
I'm already I've already gone to the Mackenzie brothers. Oh goodness. Right,
we're back tomorrow, I think from a three to five again.
Bill Benner from the Sporting who visits with us, and
we'll talk a little college football. Thank you for joining
us this afternoon. Thanks agetting to the folks out at
the Flying to the Hoop for having us out to
the press conference today. I appreciated that and all your help.
(01:35:45):
And to Kelly b thanks for being with us as
well today too. And we'll talk to you tomorrow three
to five. Right here, it is, indeed the press box.
It is indeed Fox Sports nine eighty going eighty.
Speaker 11 (01:36:07):
Same s
