Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the press box with Marty Bannister, the latest
on all local sports from right State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine to three, seven by three, one, six, one,
seven zero the press Box on Fox Sports nine eighty WNA.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
I mean, it's it's hard in this league to have
a game where you come out in all three phases.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Show night man. We really got them all three phases
because we're playing some good teams. That Cincinnati Bengals head
coach Zach Taylor assessing the win on Sunday night over
the New York Giants. Welcome to the press box, Fox
Sports nine eighty w O. Ay have Marty banners. We're
good to have with us here on this Wednesday afternoon.
Still overcast, still chili, but warmer temperatures are on the way.
(00:49):
It is quite a scene in the downtown area just
across the street from our building. There is a fire
apparently that has evacuated. Forced the evacuation of the building
which is right across the street from our palatial downtown
Dayton location in the Hub. Kelly b had to walk
about seven miles to get to the building today to
park her vehicle to get to get in and produce
(01:11):
the program. Now, it is very hectic surrounding the downtown
area where we're at a bunch of streets right across
from the bus station is if if you've ever been
to the downtown area, we are right smacked just down
from the Oregon District. So, but it's a mess down
there right now, Kelly with a track with a fire
with responding cruise and whatnot, because I guess the transformer
(01:32):
blue in the building across the street from where we're
at at Ludlow and Paul Denote right in that area,
it's a mess.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
Yeah, yeah, So the fire is underground and basically a
worker in the Rebold building looked out the window and
saw a bunch of smoke coming up from a manhole
and she was like, that's odd, and.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Yeah, that'll get your attention. That's odd.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
A loud boom was heard right around that time in
another part of the building, and then the fire alarm
in the Rebold building went out, and that that happened
right after one and their buildings still closed that people
are are being asked to evacuate. Everyone had to get
their car out of there. I had to park, like
Marty said, seven uphill both ways. But I made it
(02:18):
here for you find.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
The barefoot exactly. And we're not laughing at the situation,
believe you, we're not. But it seems like anyone's safe. Yeah,
well that's the good part about it, that everyone is safe.
So hopefully everyone, Uh this will get to contain the
dat and fire crew. They're the best in the business
(02:41):
and they're on it right now, so uh, this will
get taken care of. But it's just going to be
a bit hectic. If you're traveling around the downtown area
right now and you're wondering why you can't go certain directions,
well that's why. So just to allow yourself some extra
time as you make your way through, and it will
keep you updated if we learn anything more. Kelly was
laughing and saying that because the Rebol building is where
(03:02):
our company parks, and people were having to scatter out
of our offices to get over to move their.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
Cars and to move their cars, and I don't think
they're coming back to the office. Marty, I'm gonna be
honest with you.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Would you would you would gotta go home? I got
a place to park. I gotta go home, alright. I'd
like to hang around on the work, but there's nowhere
to park park my car. So sorry.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
I wish I could help.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
I really would like to be here and do the
things I'm supposed to do today, but just can't do it.
Just no place to park the car. Nonetheless, we are
here with you, though, and with you right up until
five o'clock. A big show coming up for you today.
Bill Bender will join us at about three twenty from
the Sporting News Are believe it or not, We are
at about the halfway point of the college football season.
If you sit back and look at the the twelve
(03:46):
game regular season, a lot of teams have hit the
six game mark. And we're gonna talk to Bill some
of his thoughts on the halfway point of the season.
What surprised him, what hasn't surprised him, things along those lines.
Get his reaction to the Ohio State game on Saturday night,
at the loss to the by the Buckeyes to Oregon,
and so we'll hear from him. Coming up in the
second hour of the program. Dennis Courrier, who is the
(04:07):
head soccer men's soccer coach at the University of Dayton
will join us. And you may be asking, Kelly, why
are we having Dennis Courrier on the show and hour
number two?
Speaker 4 (04:17):
Oh, why are we having Dennis Career on the show
and hour number two?
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Thank you for playing along. Last night, the Dayton men's
soccer team beat the number one team in the nation,
the West Virginia University Mountaineers.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
So coach Curry calling to yell at him for beating
your your mountaineers.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
No, no, not at all.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
You're like I got something for him.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
The West Virginia soccer team isn't They aren't my Mountaineers.
I don't worry about that. I don't worry about that.
I'm happy to Dayton one. I'm very happy about that.
And not everything is the West Virginia soccer team. I
just don't just don't follow it all. But congratulations to
the UD soccer team. A great win, no question, and
coach curR has had a great career as a UD
soccer coach. Will talk to him that and we'll do
that next hour. We'll also hear some comments from Miami
(05:04):
head football coach Chuck Martin. It's a big week, It's
Battle of the Bricks. Between Miami and Ohio, and it
is the one hundredth game between the two programs coming
up on Saturday at Jager Stadium in Oxford. So looking
forward to that. It'll be my first chance to call
one of those looking forward to that on Saturday afternoon
from Oxford.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
So when you said beat the Mountaineers, you really hit
the lead because they whooped the Mountaineers five to one.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Well, we're gonna let coach talk about it. I mean, wow, though, Yeah,
we're gonna let coach talk about that. When you knock
off the number one team, most times you think, oh
it was three to two, they got a penalty kick
or whatever. Yeah, no, you're right then that's what I thought. Also,
they beat the Mountain Mountaineers and it was five to one.
So we're gonna talk to coach about that coming up
(05:54):
next hour, and again Chuck Martin will visit with us
on the program. We'll have hear his comments next hour.
As the Red Hawks get ready to play the Bobcats
on Saturday. As I said, one hundredth meeting between the
two Battle of the Bricks. It should be a lot
of fun down there in Oxford on Saturday. So looking
forward to that. So that's what we have. We have
a couple of fan polls up for you today as well,
(06:15):
and those we have up for you today, both of
them center on the NFL for the most part. One
of them, we're asking you today just simply who wins
Sunday's first round to the Battle of Ohio between the
Bengals and the Browns. Is it the Bengals? Is it
the Browns? I almost put on there can it will
end in a scoreless tie, but that won't happen. The
(06:39):
Bengals right now are getting eighty seven percent of the vote. Marty,
I know how you feel.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
But if you look at the no, you don't know.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
You don't know how I feel. No, you don't know
how I feel about You have no idea how I
feel about this.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
If the Bengals this is not this is not last season.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Don't don't. Don't try to make me feel better.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
I'm this isn't even about your feelings. This is it
would be insane. Oh, I mean, and weirder things have happened.
I will give you and it is you know Halloween.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
And see here you here you go. You're going down
that don't going down that alley and I'm telling you
those things don't apply to this I just they just
don't apply to.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
This hill right now, SI cool, Burrow.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Don't don't please make me feel good going into the game,
and then I'll then my my heart will be ripped
out on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
I'll give you that. I'll give you that if look.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
See if I feel bad, See if I feel bad
going into the game, then I can say to myself
at four thirty, when Cleveland wins, I'll go out and
see I knew it was coming, sure. And then if
if the Bengals win, then I can feel really good
because they will have surprised me.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
Got it.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
But if I go into it, I've gone into a
too many times. I went into your disappointment. I went
into a confident the year we talked about it yesterday,
the year the Bengals went to the Super Bowl. I
went into a confident when Burrow just marched them right
down the field and they were just slicing and dicing
the Browns defense, and then Denzel Ward picked off that
pass and ran it back one hundred yards for a touchdown.
(08:18):
I was confident, we're gonna, we're gonna finally gonna get
these guys, you know, like I knew that, so but anyway,
eighty six percent of the boat a vote going towards
the Bengals right now. Also asking you today got into
this a little earlier today in the morning hours. I
was doing some research on a couple of things and
just jumped on this. Officials in Hamilton County, just to
(08:42):
our south where Cincinnati resides. Of course, there is a
stadium issue with pay Corpse Stadium. It's coming up, the
lease between the city and the Bengals and the county
and the Bengals. Well, apparently they are exploring putting a
dome on pay Corps Stadium in Cincinnati. Oviously, Cleveland sides
they want a dome with Cincinnati's like, hey, wait a minute,
(09:04):
we got to have one too. So that's being explored.
It's nothing more than just asking questions and checking the
feasibility of it, things along those lines. So we thought
we'd ask you, what do you think should would a
dome on pay Course Stadium work in Cincinnati. It's a
great idea, or no, it should be left open air.
And it's split right now, fifty to fifty in the boating.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
Yeah, it gets cold, you know sometimes you're like retractable.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
Yeah, like Indianapolis with Lucas Oil. That's probably the way
to go both worlds, right, yeah, exactly. So I'm not
a dome guy. I just don't like them. I just
I just don't. I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
I prefer the open air as well.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Yeah, get outside. Yeah, the atmosphere, the cold. Football is
meant to be played in cold weather. I mean, what
are the highest rated TV games when the weather's cold? Yeah,
when it's and yeah, people flocked to those games. I
know the players and owners probably don't like him that way,
but they're always.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
The entirety of the Miami franchise again.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Yeah, yeah, it was seventy eight below when we walked
on the field last January and Kansas City, but it's
still that. But I think it's an interesting discussion to
have about that. And again, great idea or no leaving
a great idea or no leave it open air? And
it's split fifty to fifty right now, all right, it's
updated on some of the other things going on on
this Wednesday in the world of sports. As we move
(10:33):
along here. The Guardians are down two games to none.
The decision by steven vote last night early in the
game to pull Tanner Piby got a lot of reaction
and if you I thought Jeff Frank Corr and Ron
Darling on the broadcast did a very good job of
breaking down why he did it and when he did it,
(10:54):
because you couldn't let the game get out of hand
that early, and it ended up the Yankees went one
at six to three. But I thought the decision after
I'm sure I was texting with some friends who were
Guardians fans and their reaction was, I mean, they were
going off the rails. I mean, w how can you
do this? But if you really sit back and analyze it, yeah,
(11:15):
you can say, well, it didn't work because they lost
the game. Okay, fine, I understand that. But at the
same part of it too, this at least allows you
to bring Biby back maybe quicker than you could have
because if they if for example, if they lose tomorrow night,
they're down three to zero, you got to salvage your season.
(11:37):
Then it's Johnny Hoolestaff time on Friday. So anybody can
and that would include Biby. So and that's not your
your entire thinking in this, because you can't manage that way.
But at the same time, that's kind of how it
it's it's played itself out. I mean you could see
the look on Biby's face in the dugout. He was
not happy that he had been pulled from the game
(12:00):
like that. But the Guardians have a very good bullpen
and it's a strength of the team. And if you're
going to go down, you're going to go down with
your strength, don't you think.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
Oh, absolutely, yeah, you've got to go out swinging.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
You got, I mean you have to. And the Yankees
once if you look at the Yankees, this is not
a Bronx Bombers nineteen twenty seven edition of the Yankees.
They're they're very beatable. I mean they are. They're a
very beatable baseball team. Because if you look after Aaron
(12:32):
Judge and gian Carlos, Stanton and Soto and that their lineup,
it's okay, it's all right, it's nothing spectacular. The Guardians
can swing with them. So I think from that standpoint, plus,
you know you're coming back home. I don't. I've seen
a lot of Guardians fans saying things like, well, you
(12:55):
can see the deer in the headlights look of the team.
They've made common mistake, and they did. They made mistakes
you don't normally make. Well. I mean, the dropped in
field fly, I mean I can almost tell you the
wind had something to do with that, because the wind
was a factor last night. Should it have been caught,
Absolutely absolutely. You can't argue that, can't argue that part
(13:15):
of it at all. But I don't think they were
out there stunned and had that look of just sheer amazement.
My gosh, we're in the playoff, We're at Yankee Stadium.
Baseball players don't do that. Professional athletes don't do that.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
I think nerves is a thing in the playoffs, especially
if it's your first your first time in the playoffs,
then the second.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
Game of the series, it's the second game, it was
the first game of the series, then maybe you could
go yeah, maybe, but this is game two and they've
played in big games before. If this were the first
playoff game this franchise has ever played in, well then yeah,
that has a little bit of validity to it. But
it's not so that I don't buy I just the
(13:58):
first two games the Yankees have been better. It's just simple.
They've been better. Timely hits, timely pitching, and I think
the series turns when Cleveland goes back to Progressive Field
tomorrow night. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see him
win the next two games, really wouldn't. I don't know
they're gonna win all three of the games in Cleveland,
but I think they can get at least two of
(14:20):
them and push it back to New York for a
game six. That wouldn't surprise me at all. Three point
fifteen is a time we have a lot to get
into in the program today, as mentioned little college football
talk when we come back. Bill Bender visits with us. Yesterday,
the Browns traded Amari Cooper to the Bills. DeVante Adams
was traded to the Jets. All quiet today on the
(14:40):
trade front, but I think we're far from done in
those regards, and the Tampa Bay Rays may need a
new home so really Tropic Canna Field will not be ready.
The roof damaged in the storm. It's the press box
Fox Sports nine eighty W and eighth.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three, seven by three, one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN three.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Nineteen to time. As we roll along, it's the press
Box Fox Sports nine eighty w one. Tomorrow on the program,
we will have a preview of the Bengals and the
Browns on Sunday. We'll have Damon Woolf from Dogs by
Nature and Hour number one and our friend Anthony Cosenza
from Orange and Black illustrated in our number two as
we go to both ends of the state and get
you the latest on the Bengals and the Browns as
(15:34):
they meet on Sunday in Cleveland. Let's talk a little
college football now. We welcome to the Live line. Our
friend Bill Bender from the Sporting News does a great
job covering college football, and Bill, this is also Battle
of the Bricks week, the one hundred matchup between Ohio
and Miami on Saturday down in Oxford and college rivers
are kind of going by the wayside, and it's good
to see one like this still survive, isn't it. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
We don't really want Toledo in northern Illinois to go
to the Mountain White West Conference either, So you know,
I enjoy the MAC. I always tell people, as you
know this, Marty, the Max is one of those leagues
where top to bottom of the gap isn't so ridiculous
that you can literally beat anybody in the league on
any given week. And I know some teams have her up,
you know, Kent Knacker and are having rough years and
(16:17):
all that, but you still got to play every week.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
That's why I love it absolutely. Let's talk about the
top of the top level college football right now, that
the power for slash power five however you wish to
look at it. We're at about the halfway point of
the regular season right now. Let's go to the surprise
part of things. What has surprised you through basically the
first half of the season.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
I mean that you know, there was a stat this
morning something the effective So the first time the top
three hasn't had one of Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, O High
State Michigan since twenty fourteen. I mean that would you know,
that's a good surprise that there's a little more parody
in the sport, but a wide open field of the
(17:02):
sport with the twelve team playoff era. You know, High
State and Oregon played an instant classic, Georgia, Alabama played
an instant classic, and we've had these really good teams.
I mean, we can sit here and I can tell
you right now at three twenty on Wednesday, that Texas
is the best team in the country, but I could
be telling you something totally different that Georgia beats them
(17:23):
on Saturday.
Speaker 5 (17:24):
I think that's the beauty of.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
It, exactly, and that's the I think that that part
of it, Bill, And please give me your thoughts on this,
because I think a lot of people figured we weren't
going to see this kind of balance this year in
college football, and I don't know if the realignment part
played played a role into that right now, but do
you think that's a pretty fair assessment of where we're
at that it's a lot more balancing than I think
a lot of people thought it was going to be.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Well for sure, and you know the big ten. The
travel is definitely factored in with the two time zone thing.
That's certainly out there and well documented, and we saw
an example of that last weekend. It was a little
more It makes USC's loss to or Penn States win
over USC that much more impressive. But yeah, I think
(18:08):
there's a little bit more wide open feel to it.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
I you and I have.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
Talked at length about nil and transfer portal and all
those kind of things. The game on the field is
still pretty cool, and I still enjoyed a great deal,
and you're seeing some good games and some wild upsets,
and man, Alabama. I think part of it too is Alabama,
you know Alabama. Without saving a little bit of a
different story right now.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
That's a great point about the nil and the transferport,
because I think that's another part of this bill that
had a lot of people, maybe I don't know if
it's fans or media or combination of both, maybe felt
a little soured on the sport of college football. But
you're right on the money. It's as healthy I think
on the field, is it maybe as it's been certainly
(18:53):
in the last ten twelve years. I think it's a
lot of fun to watch right now, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
Yeah? And you know the big ten, I mean, USC,
Michigan was cool, Housted Oregon was cool, Penn State USC
was cool. Those games, they're novelty to it right now.
And there's a long way to go.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
And I'm not.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
Sure how I'm gonna feel about the rematch factor and
the three match factor where teams could play three times,
but you know, we'll see when we get there. I
do think one of the things, and I was just
arguing about this in a meeting today. We need to
have consequences. You need to have real consequences for losses.
Right now, the consequence for Ohio State lives into Oregon.
(19:32):
As you drop two spots. Someone say, well, that's good,
but you know in the past stat have a loss
like that that early in the season, So we have
to adjust our expectations.
Speaker 5 (19:44):
Just the same.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
Bill Bender of the Sporting News covers college football, joining
us here today in the pressbox Fox Sports nine to
eighty w OL and eight. I was driving back from
Central Michigan on Saturday after Ohio's win and I was
listening to the Ohio State radio broadcast of the Oregon
game and I heard Ross b Yorke the ad on
at halftime. I'm Bill and he was asked about the
importance of that game at Oregon Saturday, and he said,
(20:05):
it was a game basically about seeding. Let me get
your reaction to that. Do you agree with that?
Speaker 2 (20:12):
No? Yes, and no, I mean technically sure. I mean,
but that's presuming that Ohio State gets back to the
Big Ten championship game and they still have to play
Penn State, and they still have to play Indiana and
I love coming on your show. I have a feeling
and when I do in November, and if you ask
me back, we're gonna talk, you know what. We're gonna
(20:33):
talk a lot about tiebreakers. Tie breakers with the Big
ten and Indiana is ten and one and Penn State's
this and Ohio State's this. So who do we put
in the championship game? And I think not having those
Big ten divisions as part of that. It's crazy to
me that we complained about divisions and balance for so long.
And I'm kind of in the camp of probably easier
(20:54):
if we had divisions. And maybe that's the NFL brain, right.
I know how to read the AFC standing don't know
how to read the SEC standings right now.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
And we will have you back. Don't worry that that's
a given, but because we always enjoy your visits. I
love talking college football. But see that that's why I
was a division guy and still am a division guy.
I think that's the way it needs to stay, because
then you don't have to worry about all of this,
because I mean, there is the possibility. It's rare, I
think if I'm understanding the way this is set up
(21:24):
right now. But I mean, Ohio State could be on
the outside looking at a Big Ten championship game with
somebody they haven't played, being undefeated.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
And that's I guess it's possible. But in this scenario,
well so Mike de Course, my co worker at Sporting Insight,
I think he's the best college basketball writer in the country.
We like to argue a lot, and we were talking
through this scenario today. Let's stay Indiana goes eleven and
one and loses to Ohio State. Ohio State loses ten
(21:55):
and two to Penn State. Maybe it's a similar game
to Saturday. And I'm not trying to stir any thing.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
Up, just it could happen, right right, So we're sitting.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
There at the end of the road. Eleven and one
loses to Ohio State by twenty eight, High States ten
and two with two three point losses. I think the
committee would take Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (22:15):
I really do.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
And I think we're still going to bump into some
of those discussions as we get into November.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
Well could that though, I mean, I know we're talking
hypotheticals here and those are fun to do, but that
would mean the possibility of Indiana playing let's say Oregon
in the Big Ten Championship game, would it not for sure?
Speaker 2 (22:35):
Or yeah, you know, or maybe Penn State sitting there
eleven and one to two, and then we have to
sort out Okay, Penn State's only losses to Ohio. I
guess Penn State beats Ohio State that scenario, So maybe
Penn State trips up somewhere. I don't see one, but yeah,
I mean that that would mean that Indiana could theoretically
get penalized for going to the Big Ten Championship game.
(22:55):
So there's some wrinkles there and the standings in your
dead on with the division part of it, because when
you put eighteen teams in one blender, you're.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
Going to have a mess at the end exactly. And
I know they tried to set the schedule up in
the Big Ten to where that likelihood or that possibility
was not completely a certainty as far as maybe having
three unbeaten teams. But I mean, the way this is
playing out, I mean we could be headed down that road.
Bill Bender from the Sporting News visiting with us we
(23:27):
talk college football here today. Did Oregon tell people on Saturday,
Bill that they were maybe a little better than the
general consensus was on the Ducks.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Yeah, i'mna be honest. I thought, I'll High State will
win that game by ten points, and maybe some of it.
I got to continue to learn, as you learn that
not to overreact to the previous game. And I'm probably
guilty of that, right, Like I saw Bill and Gabriel
throw a couple of bad interceptions against Michigan State, saw
that Jordan Burch was out thought of High States dominated
everything they've seen, and I've kind of said this whole
(23:59):
week and I will to this end of it. So
I was wrong about my prediction, but I think I'm
right about this part. I think both teams left thinking, man,
we didn't do enough. You know, Oregon left like ten
points on the board between special teams, miss tuos and
turnovers and dumb things with a player spitting on another player,
and Ohio State the end of the game and could
(24:22):
have left Oregon.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
With a win.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
And so yeah, if they meet again, we'll probably see
something pretty similar and would see how they would, you know,
adjust to what we saw last weekend.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
What's your reaction to the And I know a lot
of its social media chatter and I'm sure you've seen it.
You guys may have even had this discussion in some
of your sporting news meetings. But the reaction from and
it's mainly Ohio State fans, the Ryan Day story again,
he can't win a big game. What's your reaction to that?
Is that a fair And I don't know if criticism
is the word, but is that something fair that needs
(24:56):
to be discussed.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
I think it's hard to win, and I mean, I'm
not look, I think I'm not trying to say Ryan
Day shouldn't be held accountable. Sure, I mean, you know,
when you're two and six at a place like Ohio State,
you don't have to There's not too many people gonna
feel sorry for you if you're not beating Michigan and
losing in these top five games. I don't think the
John Cooper comparison's fair. I think it's a different time period.
(25:21):
Those Ohio State teams were loaded, but the Big ten
as a whole, the gap from one to not I
guess eighteen now, like Cooper had to beat good Penn
State teams and good Michigan teams, those kind of things.
So I guess it's the long one to list. And
I think, who are you going to hire if you fire,
(25:44):
because that person's going to face the same ridiculous expectations
that Ohio State and Alabama are the two places that
expect to win every game all the time, and those
expectations are changing for Alabama now.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
Absolutely. And as you said earlier, with Texas and Georgia
seeing each other this week, this whole thing could be
completely different come Monday at twelve noon. I mean, I
don't think any question that we could see that happen.
We will look at the top ten remaining moments again,
Bill Bender of the Sporting News with us here today.
The one I wanted to ask you about is Miami
at six and o right now, again, a team that
(26:19):
I don't think a lot of people thought would be
six and oh right now. Your thoughts there are are
they a not not a paper Tiger? But are they
overrated or is it too early to even get an
assessment on Miami?
Speaker 2 (26:33):
I had some close calls. I really like cam Warden
I do. I think he's probably being pushed back a
little bit in the Heisman conversation with Jens and Hunter
doing that thing. But I think cam Ward's right there
with those guys. Phenomenal player, makes a couple questionable for
us here and there, but he's done a really good job.
I think those close calls against Virginia Tech and Cal
(26:54):
it was funny. I actually was texting Buddy, I was like,
can you believe Miami, of all teams that we grew
up with, is getting help from the reps? So that
was interesting in some ways, you know, because you flash
back to the Ohio State game there. But it's very
interesting to me that they're in this ACC or pitt
(27:15):
is six and zero winning close games. I do think
Clemson's the best game in the ACC. Their offensive common
and they've played bad teams, but they're a really good
football team right now, so that race will be interesting
to see. I like Clemson, but Miami's right there.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
I asked you about Ryan Day and some of the
fan criticism towards him. Steve's aar keys and at Texas
has had to I think kind of survive some of
that as well too. How good are the Longhorns.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
They're really good. I was up there when they beat
Michigan in Week two, and I was impressed because I've
been up to Michigan and I've watched really good Ohio
State teams go go up there and win. The one
that comes to mind is twenty nineteen Ohio State, Remember Fields, Dobbins,
those guys, and they went down there and just obliterated
Michigan from the jump. That's what Texas did. And quinn
(28:02):
ewrs is really good. They have the best quarterback room
in the country. They're complete, and I'm saying all these things,
and watch Georgia take that underdog card and go down
to DKR and win. You know what I thought about
this as we were talking, the NFL more figured out
than college football right now. And I've never been able
to say that, like I kind of think, you know,
like Lions chiefs, I know who the five or six
(28:25):
best teams in college or the NFL are, And I
know that can change, but I feel like I have
a better hand on BA than college football and college
footboaws and the sport I cover. So that's a good thing.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
Yeah, exactly, all right, final question, Penn State six and zero.
We again, when we talked coaches, the James Franklin factor
always kind of jumps into the conversation right now, But
that was impressive to go out to Los Angeles and
win with everything they had to deal with. Travel and
all those other things. Are you a buyer in Penn
State right now?
Speaker 2 (28:52):
Yeah, it's going to be a really good game when
they play a high state in a few weeks. And
I know they haven't beat Ohio State since twenty sixteen,
and I know you can make the argument that they
shouldn't have won that game in twenty sixteen. But solid
running game, good defense, monster tight end, and Tyler Warren
and Drew Aller shook off those mistakes on the road.
(29:12):
I think they're going to play within that game with
a ton of confidence and it's going to be a
good one for Ohio State. And obviously a high state
can't look past Nebraska. But it sets up that November
two is going to be fun and that's another opportunity
for James Franklin to silence some critics, and I think
he went a long way toward doing that on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
I think you're right, Bill Bender from the Sporting There's
always a pleasure, my friend. Thank you for your time.
I always enjoyed talking college football with you, and we
will certainly have you back a little bit later on
in the season. Thanks for your time again today. I
appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
That was a ton of fun.
Speaker 3 (29:42):
Thank you all right, Bill Bender of Sporting News, A
lot of great points right there. And I was curious
about the Penn State reaction because again, as I said, everyone,
certainly Ohio State fans always go, that's James Franklin, it's
Penn State. But as Bill Bender said, they're pretty good
and you know that, but they're salivating at the opportunity
(30:03):
to get Ohio State there on November the two And
I mean think for a moment, as Bill said, if
Penn State were to win that game, that's two marks
in the right column for Ohio State, your margin of
error drops dramatically or increase. I mean it just you
lose a lot of space with what was still ahead
(30:25):
to play so and it would almost certainly knock you
out of the Big Ten title game as well too.
Maybe the best team in the country that won't play
for the college championship will play for your conference championship.
Three thirty five the press Box, Fox Sports nine eighty

Speaker 1 (30:38):
Name get on the press box called Marty now at

Speaker 3 (31:09):
Welcome back to the program. Three thirty eighth the time
here on this Monday, it's the press box Fox Sports
nine eighty wo and eight. Let me take a couple
of moments here and tell you about some folks who
are a who have become a part of our show,
and we're thankful for that. If you're out and about
trying to get some workouts in, if you're thinking of well,
at this time of year, when the weather like today,
it's in the fifties. Okay, last week at this time
(31:33):
it was in the seventies, So you're trying to figure out, well,
how do I stay cool? How do I stay warm?
How do I do all of those things when I'm
trying to work out? If I'm going for a run,
if I'm just hanging around the house doing some things,
doing going out for a walk, taking the dog out
for a walk. Well, we got the folks for you.
It's the our friends from Coolingperformancewear dot com. They have
(31:54):
the tep Agenics temperature regulating performance wear shirts. Now, before
you think well, it's just another shirt, well hang on
a second. They use the technology that the folks at NASA.
You may have heard of them. Small company, yeah, small company.
You know they've been around for a while, only put
people on the Moon for goodness sakes. The fabric that
(32:16):
are used in these shirts, it's designed by NASA for
the space suits that the NASA astronauts wear, where the
temperatures can change by oh only five hundred degrees to degrees.
This keeps you warm, it keeps you cool, It does
all the things you need these shirts to do when
you're working out, going for a walk, and for women.
It's great for you as well too. When you hit
(32:38):
that point where the hot flashes things along those lines.
These shirts are perfect for those things that they're not
waking material. It's proactive. It starts pulling the heat before
you start sweating, so as your skin gets hot, the
heat is absorbed and as it cools, the heat is released.
And on top of all of that, all of the
perfect things you need. It's a woman owned Daton company,
(33:00):
so it's local and you want to buy local. You
want to be local so you can get your shirts
and they are spectacular. I highly encourage you to check
this company out. We're so glad they're a part of
our program Cooling Performancewear dot com. If you use the
code cool cool, which I am. I'm cool so you
think cool, you think of me, Well, think of these shirts, right,
(33:23):
that's what you think of when you think cool? Right?
Speaker 4 (33:26):
No, I know, yeah, oh my mic is it's broken.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
But if you use the code cool cool you will
get ten percent off and free shipping. See that's pretty good.
Go to their website Tempagenics dot com Performance and you
can find these shirts and you'll get a look at
them and you'll see what they do, and you will
thank me later and I will be more than happy
(33:53):
to accept your thanks for these shirts. But again, Cooling
Performancewear dot com. The Tempogenics temperature you're regulating performance where
unparalleled NASA cooling technology get you ready for that busy
day working out. You're running home late, you don't have
time to break down into a different set of clothes.
You can have this shirt on and you'll be ready
(34:13):
to go. Pretty simple. It's pretty simple. So again a
cooling Performancewear dot com and we thank them for being
a part of our program and giving you a chance
to sample these shirts. So again, as I said, go ahead,
get one and then call us and say hey, Marty Kelly,
you guys were right, which which I think you guys
say a lot. Yeah, what we always are.
Speaker 4 (34:35):
We're getting that feedback almost every day.
Speaker 3 (34:38):
Especially me. I mean, I'm always right, so I haven't.
Speaker 4 (34:40):
I haven't heard any for you, but I.
Speaker 3 (34:46):
All right. Again. Thanks thanks to our friends the Tempogenics
dot com, performance Wear at coolingwear dot com. We thank
them for being a part of our program. And again,
as I said, it's a Dayton owned company, so again
by local support, local businesses, that's what this is all about,
all right. A couple of fan polls are up for
you this afternoon. Hamilton County officials are exploring putting a
(35:07):
dome on pay Court Stadium in Cincinnati. Now, the lease
between Hamilton County and the Bengals is coming up. I
think it's after next year the lease expires, so they're
looking at different options to improve pay Corpse Stadium. Well,
Bengals winning a game and it would help, but that's
beside the point. What's your reaction to the possibility of that.
(35:28):
Is it a great idea? Or no? It should be
left open air? And right now, leave it open air
and the great and it's a great idea. Split the
vote fifty to fifty. So we're also asking you today.
Bengals and Browns play in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon at
one o'clock. It's the first round of the Battle of
Ohio between the Bengals and the Browns. We're just simply
asking you today who wins the game. And right now,
(35:50):
the Bengals are getting eighty percent of the vote. The
Brown's getting twenty percent of the vote. So you know
how I feel on this, and I'm just trying not
to well, at any rate, we know, we know what
this game. It's just amazing to me that when certain
(36:10):
teams play certain teams, that other team, for whatever reason,
has their number. And I don't know. I mean, last
ten games, the Browns have won eight of them, and
I I, is it, is it whatever? I don't know,
but well, at any rate, that's where our pole stands
(36:32):
right now, So I know what you mean.
Speaker 4 (36:34):
Sometimes those rivalries go beyond the actual skill of the
players on the field. It's for some reason it will
be beyond them, and I understand feeling that way. I
just don't think this is the time. I really feel
like the Bengals are. They're trying to get the ship righted,
(36:56):
and this honestly feels like the first step in correcting
what has been so far A.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
Please don't try to make me feel better about it. Okay,
please stop trying to make me feel better because, as
I said before, I know how it's gonna end. You don't.
Nick Sunday. Oh, by the way, I wanted to mention this.
Nick Chubb pend a letter today to Browns fans and
(37:27):
it was a and this just shows you should thank
the football gods if you're a Browns fan that you
have had this guy in your in your on your team.
I mean, there aren't too many guys. Certainly you're not
gonna get a letter like this out of number four,
the quarterback, because well for obvious reasons. And I don't
think Browns fans would be happy to see it anyway
(37:50):
or would pay any attention to it anyway. But his
letter on the Players Tribune dot Com said, I'll just
pay raise some of it for you. You're hearing a
lot of It's gonna be all right, bro. That's never
a good sign. Once guys start getting down on one knee,
you know it's pretty bad. If my teammate's praying over me,
(38:11):
maybe it's just a bone, Bruce. Maybe I'll be back
by the playoffs. But now I got the Steelers praying
over me, so on. There's a lot of great parts
of this letter if you go in and read it.
But he basically tells Brown's fans that he's He's back,
and I've got your back and I'll pay it back
the responses to everything that has happened. Kevin Stefanski was
(38:35):
asked about the letter today and told the members of
the media who asked him about it, he's a better
journalist than you are.
Speaker 4 (38:44):
Well, in light of new evidence, you guys are in trouble.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
You're in trouble.
Speaker 4 (38:50):
You guys might be in trouble. You might be in trouble.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
Now see there you go. You might be in trouble.
Speaker 4 (38:56):
That's tough. Yeah, I'm excited to see Nick Chub back.
Speaker 6 (39:00):
But yeah, yeah, oh I am too. Guys, would you stop?
I'm sorry now even shot me on a completely different broute.
I just I didn't.
Speaker 3 (39:11):
I didn't. I didn't.
Speaker 4 (39:12):
I didn't realize how heartfelt the letter was.
Speaker 3 (39:14):
And now I'm like, oh, stop, just stopped, just stop.
Burrow's going to go two for nineteen for eight yards
and be picked off three times. It's the press box.
Fox Sports nine eighty w an.
Speaker 1 (39:32):
Get on the press box called Marty Now at nine
to three seven by three one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty.
Speaker 3 (39:43):
W O N eight. We were talking prior to the
break about Nick Chubb's letter to the fan base. The
last part of it is again it just shows you
what a class act is. Like the last part of
the letter where he thanked the Browns fans and he
thanked the Browns management because he had no guaranteed money
in his contract, they could very easily have cut him.
I mean very easily have cut him. And the last
(40:06):
couple of lines of the letter is what I think
sticks with a lot of people.
Speaker 7 (40:09):
Quote.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
That's enough talking for me. There's only one thing left
to do. Now. I gotta pay yah back. They gotta
pay you back. These rocks ain't going to move themselves.
Let's work, Nick. So there you go. Why can we
be playing the Ravens this week or the Steelers? Yeah, well,
(40:33):
we gotta walk up there now and he's gonna be back.
They are, They're gonna be I still, I don't even mind.
I don't even to try and break it down. I'm
just getting austious because it's what's hanging in the balance.
For a two And it's funny because you think about it,
it's what's hanging in a balance for a two and
four football team. They're going up to play a team
(40:55):
that's one and five that could not punch their way
on offense out of a wet paper bag. Right now.
They're getting back a player who hasn't played it down
in over a year. And I'm as nervous as I've
been since probably the Super Bowl. Yeah, like, come on,
you should be. You should feel confident going up there
(41:17):
in this situation and knowing that as as much of
a mess as that team is, you should feel good
about your chances. And I just I don't. I just don't.
I've been down this road or up this road or
whatever road it is way way too many times. So
it is what it is. Next hour, Dennis Currier, the
men's head soccer coach at University of daton'll visit with us.
(41:39):
They knocked off the number one team of the nation
last night West Virginia, and we'll hear from coach Courrier
coming up a little bit later on in the program
next hour, So we're looking forward to that conversation. I
was asking some friends of mine with as I mentioned
before in this show. I have a group of friends
who we have a chat group where we talk about sport.
(42:00):
It's a lot we converse about a lot of things,
and they're all Browns fans. I'm the only outlier in
the group. The only one was Sanity in the group.
But I wanted to get some thoughts from Browns fans
with everything that's going on that has gone on around
Deshaun Watson. Go back to when they when he was acquired.
(42:23):
What was your reaction at that time? How did you
feel about it at that time? And it really I mean,
it hasn't been that long ago that this happened, because
the reaction to it now obviously is I mean, everybody's
twenty twenty hindsight. We all saw, we all saw it coming,
we all knew it was going to be terrible. Well,
(42:44):
I think there were a lot of you that were
out there Browns fans that were in that well, but
it's Deshaun Watson. He might be a disaster off the field,
but there's that possibility that he could be good. And
(43:07):
it's completely and obviously it is completely gone off the rails. Yeah,
that's so I wanted to just get the feeling from
some Browns fans. And I asked some of those friends
of mine in that group, and here are some of
the responses. Rick says, didn't like it at all, didn't
care about his abilities, too much baggage from off the field.
Al says, wasn't a fan, didn't like the off field stuff,
(43:27):
wasn't sure how good he still was. A lot of people,
my son included, thought he might be worth the risk,
but not at that price. And I think that's where
a lot of people were with it at that time,
that it was, well, yeah, we got to do something
because because the prevailing opinion was Baker Mayfield wasn't the
answer either at quarterback.
Speaker 4 (43:50):
I think you've mentioned before how the other owners were like,
this is this contract is a problem all of us
because it's not done in a bubble. And now every
other quarterback in the league sees it. And I think,
and we've also talked about how other teams were in
on Deshaun Watson, and I think that once that number
(44:12):
was said, every team needed to be out on Deshaun Watson.
Even if you need to do something the price for
this player, who I don't care who you are, you
haven't played in two years.
Speaker 3 (44:25):
Well, I guess a year at the time was.
Speaker 4 (44:29):
I mean, that's that's it's hard to get back into
football shape after a summer off. You're telling me a
guy who's been in battled legally, so I know he's
not working out, and and then we're paying him all
this money. They gave him of that light contract in
the first year because they knew he wasn't playing.
Speaker 3 (44:51):
I think Kelly that there was and I think we're
all guilty of this sometimes as fans. We want to
overlook the discretions off the field because it could help
our team win. And I think that's where a lot
of this is. I think there was a large section
(45:11):
of Browns fans who were willing to go, Yeah, it's
not something I'm very pleased with, but if he gets
us to the super Bowl, we can kind of sleep
on that. And that has happened in a number I mean,
you can go up and down both. I mean just
about any sports there have been those situations. I mean,
(45:32):
the Bengals had it with Joe Mixon. We've all seen
the video with Joe. The Ravens have certainly had it again.
You can kind of go to just about any team
in any sport and go, well, that was that guy.
I don't want to for him.
Speaker 4 (45:48):
I mean, I mean I could literally list all thirty
two NFL franchises and name at least one guy in
my lifetime that there's been an issue.
Speaker 3 (46:00):
So I guess the point of all this is, do
you feel bad about feeling good about that trade if
you did at the time because of where it's.
Speaker 4 (46:12):
At now, Well, I love to say I told you
so me personally, Well, that's.
Speaker 3 (46:18):
Easy to do. But see, that's really easy to do.
And that's kind of that was kind of my point
on that. I think it's easy now. I mean, certainly
from a from a Bengals fan standpoint, you know, ha
ha ha, you struck out again. You missed again with
your quarterback. But I recall at the time when the
Browns acquired him, I thought, hmm, boy, they might have
(46:41):
got this one right because of everything well yeah, but
everything he had done up to that point on the field.
On the field, you were you were like, whoa, this
is a move. I mean they I mean the money
that they spent, Yeah, it was a little obviously, it
was exorbitant, and every owner in the NFL was ready
to defind Jimmy has the just knock him around, but
(47:03):
you thought, okay, it's like an injury. You just come
back from the injury and away you go. And I
think a lot of us were of that opinion of
what they might have finally got one right.
Speaker 4 (47:16):
It's interesting you say that because I and and maybe
we were. Obviously we have different friends, but I'm I'm
friends with a lot of women's sports fans, and the
the idea of Deshaun Watson getting all that money guaranteed
turned a lot of people off, even Brown's fans, because
the thought was, oh no. But what I'm saying is
(47:38):
that the thought was what it like, there was a fear,
what if he does play really well?
Speaker 3 (47:43):
And now I have to cheer for this guy.
Speaker 4 (47:45):
Now I have to go to the stadium and there's
a million people wearing his jersey. For some folks, the
idea of that was worse.
Speaker 3 (47:53):
Well, yeah, exactly, and I and I think certainly from
a and there. I mean, let's face it, NFL teams
have a have substantial female fan bases. In Cleveland has
a huge female fan base. I mean, I don't know,
how could they feel comfortable? Are you cheering for this guy.
Speaker 4 (48:12):
Yeah, that's the same.
Speaker 3 (48:13):
Are you rooting for this guy but he's on your
favorite team? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (48:16):
And if he's winning, oh my gosh.
Speaker 3 (48:19):
Oh yeah. Sometimes it's like.
Speaker 4 (48:21):
What do you even want here?
Speaker 3 (48:22):
Right? As I said, hindsight's always twenty twenty, always will be,
always has been. But I just found it interesting that
the reaction now is it the same as it was then?
And I think for the most part, I would say no.
I think at that time you were willing to go okay,
(48:44):
as long as we win. Well, you haven't won, and
now it's it's a mess. The press Box.
Speaker 1 (49:27):
Welcome to the press Box with Marty Banister, the latest
on all local sports from Wright State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.

Speaker 3 (49:49):
This is who this baseball team is. We don't quit,
We keep fighting. We did it again tonight and I'm
excited to get home to Cleveland and play in front
of our fans. Guardians Manager Stephen Vote After yesterday six
to three loss to the Yankees and the second game
of the American League Championship Series has dropped the Guardians
into a two to nothing hole. Welcome back to the
press box, Fox Sports nine to eighty w e Im
(50:10):
Marty Battles are good to have you with us here
on this Wednesday afternoon. Still to come this hour, University
of Dayton men's soccer coach Coach Courier will visit with us.
His team last night knocked off the number one team
in the country, they beat West Virginia, and coach will
visit with us coming up in a little bit and
we'll talk about his team and the win last night
and how you build off of something like that, and
(50:33):
again we're getting that part of the NCAA soccer season
where you're starting to think conference postseason, you starting the
NCAA tournaments, things along those lines, and that was a
huge win for Dayton last night. We'll talk to coach
coming up in a little bit here during this hour.
We have a couple of fan polls up for you
as well too on the program this afternoon, so we
have a lot to get into today. Last night in Columbus,
(50:55):
the Blue Jackets played their first home game in the
regular season of the National Hikler since the tragic death
of Johnny Gadroau and his brother Matthew. And if you
had a chance to watch any of that, or if
you were there last night and you were there, or
you experienced it on on TV, or or however so
(51:20):
hard not to have a lump in your throat or
a tear in your eye. It was so emotional. I've
watched it a couple of times, and it just the
thing that that I found with it in thinking about it.
We we I think we mentioned this a little bit,
maybe yesterday or earlier in the week about this.
Speaker 8 (51:43):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (51:44):
You, as as much as you want to forget this tragedy,
this brings it back again twofold and and I think
that's a good thing that we haven't forgotten. If you
were a if you're a hockey fan, if you're a
Blue Jackets fan, the emotion that surrounded what happened last
(52:04):
night at Nationwide Arena when the game started. Before the
drop of the puck to start the game, the Blue
Jackets took the ice with just four players forcekaters. The
left wing position was left open, that's where Gadrow played.
They let the first thirteen seconds run off the clock
because that's the number that he wore the Florida Panthers
(52:29):
got to the arena. Gudrou prior to games would always
drink purple Gatorade and have a bag of Skittles with him.
Every Florida player that got off the bus was carrying
a bottle of purple Gatorade and carrying a bag of Skittles.
And I mean it just that sort of emotion that
(52:51):
surrounds it. Everyone said afterwards the game, that was not
the reason they were there last night. Florida won at
four to three, But the feeling all across the National
Hockey League is there and it will stay there I
think for this the season. Yeah, but it was the
emotion in that building last night. I've texted a few
(53:12):
people who were there and they said, you just it
was just remarkable the feeling in the building last night,
a nationwide arena sellout crowd as it should have been.
Gaudreau's wife was on the ice prior to the game.
It just I it was emotional. It was, it really
(53:33):
really was. He really was. And there was a banterer
with Goodrou's number raised prior to the game that will
sit and stay atop a Nationwide Arena. And it's funny
because you look back at it, his time in Columbus
really wasn't that long. He hadn't been a Blue Jacket
for very long, which shows you the impact he had
(53:54):
on the franchise, on the team. I mean, here was
a guy. Columbus is not a free agent destination in
the National Hockey League, it just isn't. And this guy,
who was one of the tops in the league wanted
to play there, made a point to come to Columbus
and play. And it was just an emotional night last night,
(54:18):
and something that from those who were there, they have
said they will never ever forget what they were a
part of last night, and I'm sure a lot of
folks feel that way about what they saw last night.
There was a lot going on prior to the game
out in the area around the arena, the entrance to
(54:38):
the arena as well too. Just a remarkably emotional night
for really of one of eighty two hockey games in
a National Hockey League regular season. As I said, Paul Maurice,
the head coach of the Panthers who won the Stanley
Cup last year, and this guy knows a little bit
about important wins. He said last night game didn't mean
(55:01):
a thing. Wasn't about the game, was about the game,
had nothing to do with the game, nothing to do
about the game. So but I just wanted to make
sure if you if you have, if you haven't, had
a chance, you can find it anywhere online. The video
of it last night. It's worth your time to watch
it and to see how that all played itself out.
So a couple of fan pulls up for you. Today,
(55:22):
Hamilton County officials are exploring the possibility of putting a
dome on paid Course Stadium in Cincinnati. Now this is
far from we're turning dirt. We're bringing in all the
things we need to do to start working. But it's
something that they're they're thinking about. I'm looking at just
checking the feasibility of it. So we thought we would
ask you your reaction to it today. Is it a great
idea or it should be left open air? Fifty four
(55:44):
percent of you going with leave it open air, So
but a retractable roof I think makes some sense. I
am an open air stadium guy. I don't like domes,
but I understand why some do. But no, less a
great idea of forty five percent of the vote. Also,
we're asking today who wins Sunday's first round of the
(56:05):
Battle of Ohio between the Bengals and the Browns. Right now,
eighty two percent say the Bengals will win game, the
first game of the series. Our friend the Nude, who
checks in rather regularly, we have a hot fudged Sunday bet.
He thinks the Bengals gonna win by twenty or more points.
I think that's not happening, he responds. Today. I hope
the Browns lose by seventy five points. I have a
(56:26):
tee time for eleven ten and then going to the
Udi game at five. I won't even be watching the
Bengals versus the Browns game or the rest of the
Browns games this year. So eleven time. Huh, Well him straight, dude,
hit them straight. I think the weather's gonna be good
on Sundays.
Speaker 4 (56:43):
Like that sentiment from the Nude is a lot of
what I'm hearing from Browns fans all over this area.
I don't know what's going on in Cleveland, but I
don't imagine it's much better. But the Browns fans around here,
the ones that I hang out with, they're done. They're
so with the franchise that at this point they're like,
(57:03):
I will do any They're like, I'm gonna just eat
paint chips from.
Speaker 3 (57:08):
One to four. You know what, I'm not.
Speaker 4 (57:10):
I will not be watching that game. And that's why
I don't like this move by Stefanski, just standing tall,
standing strong behind a Shaan Watson, because I feel like
he's We're sacrificing the rest of the team and now
the fan base for this one guy.
Speaker 3 (57:29):
I don't It's remarkable. Injury updates from both sides of
the state of how Grant Delpit back practicing today for
the Browns. For Cincinnati, DJ Turner was limited, the only
limited Bengal. So that's good news from a Cincinnati standpoint,
because injuries have just crushed them to this point of
(57:49):
the season. So that's good news. But delp it back
and again the Browns are starting to get healthy job
and not Grant. I don't wanna start down that road again.
We talked probably to the top of the hour about
the Tampa Bay Rays and the issue that they are
going to have now with a new home because the
place where they play their games, Tropi Caana Field, basically
(58:12):
over half of the roof was destroyed during Hurricane Milton
last week, and the stadium, from what Major League Baseball
is saying right now, will not be ready for Opening
Day in March. Now. There have been a number of
ideas tossed around in the past about the Rays, who
(58:35):
have had this issue since the franchise came into existence
back but Tampa came in I think ninety seven or
ninety eight. I think it was when they became. When
they were when they came, they came into same year
as Arizona. Think they both came in ninety eight. Because
Arizona four years later won a World Series. It took
Tampa a lot longer to get competitive. But playing in
(58:57):
that dome, and I've had a number of people who
I know in broadcasting who have called games there and
basically say the place is a dump. I mean, I've
never been there. I can't tell you, but I know
Tom Hamilton hates it. I know Marty Brenhaman hated it
when he was calling Reds games. I don't know if
too many people who like the place, but it's been
(59:18):
home for the Rays, and as I said, there's been
a Final Four there. The Tampa Bay Lightning in fact,
played their games in there in the trot in the
Tropicana Tropic Canna Field for a number of years before
they got their own arena built. So the Rays have
been trying to find a new home and they want
to stay in Tampa and Saint Pete, but again, there
(59:38):
have been a number of issues with funding and who
pays and all these other things. Where to put the
new facility. Apparently they were close to an agreement to
put a new one in, to build a new one
across the bay in Saint Pete, but they're they're just
kind of right now, just trying to figure all this out.
And it's interesting because all of the sudden, there is
(01:00:00):
a Major League Baseball stadium that is empty without a
tenant in Oakland. Yeah, lost its team, which just went
to Sacramento, which is on its way to Vegas. It's
like a stoppa. We're gonna stay in We're gonna stay
at our ants house in Sacramento for three years and
then go to Las Vegas and finish up the trip.
But Oakland is suddenly a viable alternative. Wouldn't you think
(01:00:22):
you would think? And if I'm if the ownership of
the Ray. I just wonder, and again, I don't want
to think Major League Baseball is taking advantage of a disaster,
but you just wonder if major League Baseball is thinking,
you know what if we declare the facility not ready
to play by opening day, killing two birds with one
(01:00:44):
stone here. I don't think that's that's happening, But I
just if you look at it, I mean crazier. Yeah.
And I know the effort is always and we're always
told the first effort is to keep the team in
the city that it's currently in. But if you go
back and look at the Rays, maybe it's because of
(01:01:06):
the building they have never drawn well, I mean it's
their attendance. I mean they've had playoff games down there
where there have been truckloads of empty seats. And again
I don't know if it's the Dome, if it's or
whatever it is, people will tell you. And the Miami
(01:01:27):
Marlins have the same issue because of the amount of
transplants from other parts of the country that now live
in Florida. When the Yankees play there, or the Red
Size or any other major League Baseball team, attendance goes
up because those people are fans of those teams, and
that's why they go to see them play. After that,
(01:01:50):
the Marlins go back to drawing about ten or eleven thousand,
and they've been bad. That doesn't help. But the Rays
have been very good lately. They have been a contender
in the American League.
Speaker 4 (01:02:00):
Third worst attendance. Yeah, yeah, so only above Miami and Oakland.
Speaker 3 (01:02:08):
Well how about that. But you would have to think
that Major League Baseball would love for that problem to
solve itself. And maybe it did. I don't know. I
I because I if they're saying that that's we are
what it's October, November, December, January, February. We're back basically
(01:02:28):
six months away from the start of the Major League
Baseball season. They can't get that roof fixed in that amount.
Speaker 4 (01:02:34):
I mean, that's the question I've been kind of waiting
to ask, What do you mean it's a it's a
flappy roof. That's part of why it blew away so easily.
You can't put some more tarp up there.
Speaker 3 (01:02:45):
Let's go That's the thing I'm wondering if Major League
Baseball is like, alrighty, you can't play there, sorry, so
let let's let's let's go someplace else. Another place is Montreal,
which a couple of years ago there was the talk
that Tampa was going to split their games between Montreal
and Tampa, play half in Montreal the first half of
the season and then comes out and play the rest
(01:03:07):
of the year in Tampa, which may definitely no sense,
but it's I don't think anything can be ruled out
of this right now, quite frankly, I really don't, which
is sad for whatever baseball fans there are in Tampa
who are fans of that team, which again, as I said,
I mean, they've been good. It's not as if it's
a bad franchise. For sixteen the time, it's the press
(01:03:30):
box Fox Sports nine eighty w O. A name.
Speaker 1 (01:03:37):
Get on the press box called Marty. Now at nine
to three, seven by three one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN.
Speaker 3 (01:03:50):
And welcome back to the program here on this Wednesday afternoon.
It's the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty WOE four
to twenty the time. As we roll along here today,
we have a couple of fans up for you that
will be up for about another fifteen twenty minutes or so.
There's talk of potentially a Dome in Cincinnati covering up
pay Course Stadium, and we want to get your thoughts
as well too on who wins Sunday's matchup between the
(01:04:12):
Bengals and the Browns. Well, as we mentioned a little
bit earlier last night, at the University of Dayton men's
soccer team, last night knocked off the team ran number
one of the nation. They beat West Virginia by the
final of five to one. Visiting with us right now
in the live line as the head coach of the
Flyers in his twenty the season, coach Dennis Currier joins
us on the liveline. Coach, first of all, congratulations on
the win last night. Take us through that last night.
(01:04:34):
What what does a win like that mean at this
point of the season for your program?
Speaker 5 (01:04:38):
Oh, it is extremely exciting.
Speaker 8 (01:04:40):
The you know, the guys were really energized, and you know,
West Virginia got ranked number one of the country earlier
in the day, so you know, just a lot of
excitement around the game, and then to come out and
and win five to one was you.
Speaker 5 (01:04:59):
Know, just icing on the cake.
Speaker 8 (01:05:00):
And you know, great atmosphere at Bojohan and you know
we've been we've had a really tough schedule this year,
and we've been knocking on the door for you know,
some big wins and came up, you know, just short
at at Western.
Speaker 5 (01:05:14):
Michigan with the with the draw.
Speaker 8 (01:05:16):
Uh so, to get the get the win against the
number one team was just amazing for a program.
Speaker 3 (01:05:22):
You talked about the schedule that you've played and that
I think that prepares you for something like last night,
doesn't it? When you take on the team as you
said earlier today was moved into the number one spy
of the nation. It prepares you for that, doesn't it?
It does?
Speaker 8 (01:05:35):
You know, we had the road game against Indiana this
year and you know we went down there and beat
him too zero at their place. And that's a historical
program that's you know, won so many national titles, and
you know, a game like that, you know, it certainly
prepares you, you know, for for a team like West Virginia.
They're they're very powerful and relentless and in their pursuit.
Speaker 5 (01:05:58):
On the field.
Speaker 8 (01:05:59):
So you know, the guys were ready and they were excited,
and you know we got on the front foot early
and scored some early goals and then just kept going
from there.
Speaker 3 (01:06:07):
That was going to be My next question, how important
was it last night? Coach? You put three, you had
three goals in the first half of the game last night.
How important was it to jump out to that kind
of a leading.
Speaker 8 (01:06:18):
Yeah, you know, we talked about it before the game
that we we had to be the team that scored first.
You know, West Virginia is a team that's that's known
to start quickly. We lead the country and shots and
but we're not always over the accurate.
Speaker 3 (01:06:32):
So you know, last night was a great night.
Speaker 8 (01:06:36):
To be accurate on on our shots. And you know,
I think we had eleven shots on goal and five
went in, so you can't ask for more than that
from from a coaching standpoint.
Speaker 3 (01:06:46):
Has that been a strength all season offense? Yeah, you know,
Dayton is uh.
Speaker 5 (01:06:51):
You know, our motto is attack, Attack, Attack.
Speaker 8 (01:06:54):
And you know we are always going after teams and
statistically we're we're ranked to year in a year out
for goal scored and shots on goal, and you know,
we want to continue that tradition. We've got some very
special attacking players. We've had a lot move on to
the pros, and you know we want to continue that.
And you know, it was no different. We never really
(01:07:17):
change up our style. We wanted to go at West
Virginia last night. We didn't want to sit in and
you know, a little block and counter, so we did that.
You know, we did that from really the start of
the whistle and got on top of them and just
never let him breathe.
Speaker 3 (01:07:32):
He's in his twentieth year as the head coach of
the University of Dayton men's soccer program. Dennis Courrier visiting
Wiz on the Live line. Flyers last night knocked off
the number one team of the nation. They beat West
Virginia by the final, five to one at Boujon Field,
And coach, when you get an opportunity in a game
like last night again, I know seasons are long and whatnot,
and we talked about the importance of jumping out early
(01:07:52):
in that, but could you sense, I mean, going to
the game, your players had a little different feel knowing
that this was an opportunity to kind of test yourself
against this kind of program.
Speaker 8 (01:08:03):
You know, coaching this long, you can kind of feel
the vibe of the team, and you know you could
you could tell the excitement was there, and you just
don't get many opportunities to face the number one tea
things got to align, and you know, we knew West
Virginia was sitting in the third spot and the two
in front of them had a loss and a draw,
(01:08:24):
so we thought maybe and then when they announced it
at one o'clock, you know, we quickly ran to the
team and let them know, and you can just feel
the energy in the locker room was was just higher,
and you know, you knew the guys were excited, and
you know, I think it's it's over course of time.
Speaker 5 (01:08:44):
It doesn't happen overnight.
Speaker 8 (01:08:46):
But you know, coming off an atem championship last year,
we've been in some really big games and we returned
a lot of guys, so then you know, we faced
some really tough opponents this year. So all that just
kind of equated toil last night of like we've got
to get over the that hump, you know, instead of
drawing the team or or losing you know last.
Speaker 5 (01:09:06):
Minute, you know, let's let's uh, let's win this one.
And we did it in big.
Speaker 8 (01:09:10):
Fashion, right, So we just kept scoring and really had
a couple of chances to finish off a few more
late in the game, and you know, just a just
a really good win for the program and the school
and the alumni. It was just a really exciting night
and the fans were great for us.
Speaker 3 (01:09:26):
You talked about your offense, but as anybody who follows
the sport of soccer knows, if you're not strong in goal,
your chance is a winning drop precipitously. And it looks
like you're pretty good in goal right now, Dario is it? Kaitano,
I'm sorry three saves last night. Just talk talk about
his night and talk about his game to this point.
Speaker 5 (01:09:44):
Yeah, you know, Dario has been great for us.
Speaker 8 (01:09:45):
You know, he's he led us last year and to
the to the finals for the A Tens, and you
know he's a senior, so he's he's seasoned. He's very
calm composed, but you know, not just him, the back four.
I mean last night was the first time that you
couldn't pick out one guy that that had an off.
Speaker 5 (01:10:04):
Night, like everybody who played so well.
Speaker 8 (01:10:06):
And you know, the back four did extremely well along
with the two sixes to to shut down a very
powerful offensive team with with some some really high level players.
I mean, they had two guys drafted last year that
got to come back for their for their season this
year before they go off to the Pros, and you
know that that group just did an incredible job, you know,
(01:10:29):
shutting down them to very limited shots for for West
Virginia team, and you know there was uh, you know
outside not getting the clean sheet on the one goal.
I mean, you couldn't ask for anything more from from
those from those guys and how they battled and and
were really relentless through the whole night.
Speaker 3 (01:10:50):
You mentioned your offense a couple of moments ago and
you talked about that attacking mentality that you have and
you have a number of guys that can put the
ball in the net. Talk about some of those guys
and who have played well for you and you can
account on for that right now.
Speaker 8 (01:11:03):
Yeah, you know our number thirty one, Melton Joseph Quia.
I mean, he's he is really matured this year and
you know he's he's fantastic and you know, we we
think he's the next guy to to move on to
the Pros after the season. Martin Bawkins having a tremendous year.
He's a sophomore that came to us last year and
(01:11:24):
he showed some glimpses last year and this year.
Speaker 5 (01:11:26):
He's just grown and you know he's he's one of
our our leading goal scorers.
Speaker 8 (01:11:30):
And Cooper la Juice Skis he's another sophomore that's grown,
you know, in the program, and he's had.
Speaker 5 (01:11:37):
A really good year.
Speaker 8 (01:11:38):
And I think offensively, the great thing about you know,
Dayton this year is we have so many different goal
scorers and that that's what makes your potent when you
have different guys that can score and and you know,
do damage to the opponent. So we've we've got many
different looks at goal, whether it's from the wide area
or in the middle.
Speaker 5 (01:11:58):
But you know, our strength does lie out wide.
Speaker 8 (01:12:01):
And that's where we really hurt teams with with Melto
and Cooper, and then you know, last night, Felix is
starting to get healthy and he scored a goal, So
you know, it's really nice to have different places where
you can score. Along with our right back is our
third leading goal scorer, so he gets forward a lot
and and our left back gets forward a lot, so
(01:12:23):
they both got quite a few goals on the season,
and that's where we can really hurt teams.
Speaker 3 (01:12:28):
We mentioned the win obviously over the number one team
in the country, but now you dive right back into
Atlantic ten Conference playing you've got four games left in
A ten play right now? How good is the A
ten this year? And just talk about having to hit
the road for these final final four, having I'm sorry,
the next two games on the road and then back
home for the final two of the regular season. It's
a tough stretch coming up, isn't it it is?
Speaker 5 (01:12:49):
And you know the A ten has never been better.
Speaker 8 (01:12:51):
You know, we've had several teams in and out of
the rankings this year, some great RPIs. We've got the
toughest schedule in the A ten, so we know we've
got a big road ahead of us.
Speaker 5 (01:13:02):
You still have to qualify.
Speaker 8 (01:13:04):
We've got slew in VCU and Davidson and a really
tough game this weekend against Saint Bonaventure. We're gona have
to get the team back up, you know for that game.
And the road games are very difficult. You play in
extremely different different different venues, and you can play in
front of you know, three four thousand, you can also
play in front of five things. And you know, the
(01:13:26):
weather starts to play a role here in October. So
you know, we've got a lot ahead of us this game.
You know, I always say take twenty four hours and
enjoy it, and then tomorrow we're really back to work.
And but you know, we definitely want to you know,
you want to live a little bit in the moment
because you don't get a whole lot of time to
enjoy these successes. And you know, for today, we gave
(01:13:48):
the guys off and just to enjoy the day and
then you know, tomorrow and ramp it back up and
get ready for a road game.
Speaker 3 (01:13:54):
Final question for you is along those lines, is it
good that you have to go right back into conference
play after a win like that last night where you
don't have as you said, you celebrate it now, but
you better get everything refocused to the conference coming up
on Saturday.
Speaker 8 (01:14:10):
Yeah, I mean, if you could call the NC Double
A and just call the season and we can enjoy
this for the.
Speaker 3 (01:14:14):
Year, you know.
Speaker 8 (01:14:16):
But yeah, I mean, I think I think it's good
to be to be playing games.
Speaker 5 (01:14:21):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:14:21):
It's just like we came off Saturday and a tough loss,
and we wanted to get back on the field, and
you know that helped us to propel us against West Virginia.
And you know, once again we're we're going into you know,
we're coming off some good momentum, and this will be
a good time to you know, get back on the field.
Speaker 5 (01:14:38):
And but we know we've we've got a lot of
work to.
Speaker 8 (01:14:41):
Do and and you know, navigate through a very difficult
part of the conference schedule to qualify for the A
Tens and then give another shot at getting back to
the national tournament.
Speaker 3 (01:14:51):
Coach, I appreciate you spending some time with us this avene.
Congratulations on the win last night. Heck, as you said,
you beat a number one team and something to be
proud of and your club did that last night. Second
time program history that's happened. I know it's been a
wat since it's happened, but Dayton has done it again.
I appreciate you coming on this afternoon and give us
giving us an update. Congrats on the winner. We hope
we'll get a chance to talk to you again here
pretty soon.
Speaker 5 (01:15:11):
Thanks so much for it for having me on. Appreciate that.
Speaker 3 (01:15:14):
Dennis Courier, the head soccer coach men's soccer coach at
the University of Dayton flyers last night beating number one
West Virginia and beat them rather soundly five to one.
That's and if you want to keep it in football terms,
that's about forty two to six kind of in that
same area. It's a pretty solid win, and especially to
beat the number one nine team in the nation. Four
thirty two is the time we continue along here and
(01:15:35):
again thanks to Dennis Courier for visiting with us. It's
the press box Fox Sports nine to eighty. Wa name.
Speaker 1 (01:16:14):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three seven by three, one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN eighty and.
Speaker 3 (01:16:27):
Welcome back to the press box Fox Sports nine eighty
w O and am as we continue long. Four to
thirty six is the time we were talking a little
bit earlier about rivalries and when we were talking to
Bill Bender from the Sporting News. Of course, this coming
Saturday in Oxford, Ohio and Miami, it will be the
one hundredth time those two programs have seen one another
on a college football field. It will kick off at
three point thirty on Saturday afternoon in Miami. The preseason
(01:16:49):
mac favorite stumbled out of the gateleb it, but they
played a treacherous schedule, went to Northwestern, went to Notre Dame,
They've went to Cincinnati, had a very tough schedule and
finally got their first win of the season on Saturday
when they went to Eastern Michigan and beat the Eagles
in that one on Saturday to give them a one
(01:17:10):
and one, and they opened with the team they beat
last year for the MAC Championship. They opened with Toledo,
lost that game and then bounce back with a win
on Saturday over Eastern Michigan. Game will kick off at
three thirty on Saturday, and earlier in the day, Miami
head coach Chuck Martin had a chance to address the
media and answer and have his team and answer some
(01:17:30):
questions about his team going into Saturday game with the
Ohio Bobcats.
Speaker 9 (01:17:34):
Coach, you mentioned Eastern countered the you know, Brett Gabbert
Baum to Virgil, But how how much did that impact
your guys' mindset and could we see more aggressiveness from
the offense from from that standpoint.
Speaker 7 (01:17:50):
Yeah, I've say it's a huge play. Anytime you get
off to a good start and get your head up
and you get feeling good about yourself, you know offensively,
you know defensively, you get a big play, especially whatever
whatever it is, getting a big play, so again just
gets everybody feeling good like and when you feel good
in your comment do no't matter what you're doing. You're
doing yard work, and you feel good in your confident
you're probably gonna do a heck of a job. And
(01:18:10):
they are like it does. That's that's just life like
and how you feel and how your were your confidence
levels is everything, you know. So for the whole team,
it's just a great way to start on the road
and and and and make a big play and again,
yeah we want to be aggressive offensively. Again we we
got him on a play fake. I was anticipating throwing
the over like we had thrown the post, I said, all,
(01:18:31):
and we had throw the pot to post over. Everybody
the world runs post over. Wasn't a magical play like
ramplacks and post over like everybody runs, you know, and
they do a good job of keeping a high hole
guy in the high hole. For whatever reason, he wasn't there,
so we had thrown the over. All week, I thought,
we're gonna throw the over for hopefully a big junk play,
not a touchdown, but hopefully a you know, chunk passed
off the start and get off the good start. And
but the high whole guy was on the over and
(01:18:53):
created one to one. Good job by Brett, even though
we had showed him what we thought they were gonna
do all week.
Speaker 3 (01:18:58):
He read it out and it was.
Speaker 7 (01:18:59):
One on one. He took his on one shot. So
was it designed to get seventy? Probably not, but we'll
take it.
Speaker 8 (01:19:05):
You know, coach, your past rush has started to get
home a little more and you had three sacks this week.
Speaker 5 (01:19:11):
How important is that?
Speaker 8 (01:19:12):
Then this week leading into a mobile quarterback opponent against Ohio.
Speaker 7 (01:19:16):
Yeah, it's huge because tremendously mobile, Like he can run,
he's fast, he's twitch, he's athletic, he loves to run,
loves to scramble. They have some zone read, they have
some Q design runs, but he's very dangerous running scrambling. Obviously,
rush lanes are going to be huge this week. So
obviously as you get your pass rush going obviously affects
(01:19:38):
everything you know, and coverage effects pass us pass rus
effects coverage. I think our coverage is a little better.
I think we took away some first reads, gave our
guys a little more time and give him all the
time to get home. You know, they get home quickly.
Went off the covers lo so it all works together,
and then also playing from the lead. You know, you
get to twenty eight to fourteen, Now they're still running,
but they're throwing it more often, you know, I mean,
and then you get to the fourth quarter. Now they
(01:19:59):
got to throw it. And again, we haven't played with
many leads this year, you know, so it's like part
of like there's there's there's a lot of things we
need to do better, and they're are working hard to
do better, but some of the two game dictates too,
and you're playing from behind, like what's the matter to
not get any sacks this year? Well, we're not, we're
not up, we're not in the lead, and they're throwing
(01:20:20):
and we're teeing off. End of the game. It looked
pretty good because we knew they had to throw in
our guys.
Speaker 5 (01:20:24):
You know.
Speaker 7 (01:20:24):
So if you can get leads and get them to
be one dimensional certainly helps the pass rush.
Speaker 10 (01:20:30):
Also, uh, coach, I know you've got a lot of
people banged up at the stage. To put it mildly,
what about people like Virgil with the big hit and
nank and and that, any any ideas first impressions.
Speaker 7 (01:20:47):
Yeah, we're hopeful with Reggie, we're going through like everyone.
The nice thing there's there's a nice protocol in place
to figure out when it's safe to return. So we're
hopeful with him. It's still too early. He's got to
pass it. There's a you know, just a there's an
every day something that you have to clear to get
to the next day. So but he's doing well, like
he's doing well. So he's he's he's a nank. We're
(01:21:10):
still waiting to see his His will be probably harder
to get him back ready for this week. I know
his mind, he's gonna be back ready for this week.
I know the trainer's minds. His will be you know.
But again, the nice thing with him is if he
can get like Tie, like Tied didn't do anything, but
tis playing enough football if you feel good on Saturday morning,
(01:21:33):
you know, it's not like some young guy that hey,
if you don't practice all week. Yeah, we can say
he's ready to play, but he's not ready to play
where Pete or Chuck's been here forever and played a
ton of football and really knows. So if we can
get him, you know, by Saturday, by three point thirty,
if he's feeling good enough, we'll get him out there.
Speaker 10 (01:21:50):
I'm not sure if it was related to the protection
or what, but this looked like a little bit of
bread of old. He really seemed to be inform Saturday Day.
How'd you feel about him?
Speaker 7 (01:22:01):
Yeah, definitely feels the same, exactly what you said. I
feel like he looked like himself. You know, he hasn't.
He's looked like himself in spurts this year and at
other times he hasn't looked like himself, and he looks
like he's closed to himself. I don't know that he's
totally felt like himself. I think in different times and games,
I think he has. I think he's gotten a good
place and gotten a good rhythm. But yeah, no, the
(01:22:22):
whole game, he just he managed the game good. He saw,
you know, whether it be a protection check or whatever
it was, he managed a game really good from from
mental standpoint, which he's made some mistakes in that air,
which he never makes. But again, that just tells you
that there's other things going on in his head too,
you know. And then just the time in the pat like,
guys are open, there's some tight windows, breadth thrown ball
(01:22:44):
and tight window like that's never been an issue of
breath thrown the ball and tight windows. You know, he
threw the ball. You know, some of the inside verticals
they weren't most people don't even throw those balls. He's
thrown them in. They're easy for big, big plays for us.
So time was really good. He ran good, he scrambled.
I don't know, he just I'm with you. He looked
looked like himself, and he has he's looked close to himself,
but he hasn't looked exactly like himself yet. And we've
been and I know he's been trying to get there
(01:23:06):
and frustrated, you know, because he has such a high
expectation of himself and he knows the level he's played
at for a long like I said, long before he
got to Miami, he was you know, he's a guy
that played mistake free football. He's a guy that made
great decisions, guys that always compete. Now he's competed as
hard as he ever has competed, but just everything else
has just been, you know, just just a hair off,
(01:23:27):
you know. So it was nice to see we got
in good rhythm, gott in good time. He's ten for thirteen,
you know, and two or twenty three yards and four
touchdowns and threw it to you know, through it to
a bunch of different guys you know, and throws it,
you know, when he's on he throws it at the
open guy. He don't care, he's not he's not staring
at receiver, just trying to throw the ball to Kate
or Javon or he just still throw the ball. They
were doubling Kid from the get go. They double Kid,
(01:23:49):
not every snap the whole game, but they double Kate
a ton. Well, there's ball Bretts Doesn't's just okay, you're
doubled him. The ball's got to go with the guy
that's won on one, you know, the guy that's open.
So it was a very good day from that standpoint.
Speaker 9 (01:24:03):
Coach, you're approaching Brandy Walker fifty nine. I think you
got fifty eight wins. Can you comment on that and
the significant of, you know, your next win, if you
wanted to kind of hone in on that.
Speaker 7 (01:24:13):
I've been here a long time, you know, that's probably
the biggest thing. Like pretty cool would be the second
thing for me. I'm a huge football fan. I'm a
huge Randy Walker fan. I didn't really know Randy. I
knew I coached against him as a as a coach,
opposing coach as an assistant coach, and knew how his
(01:24:36):
teams were tough and physical. And I was like, me
and Tammy, I've got to know each other really well.
And she's been amazing support of not just me Miami football,
mim University. She's alum. She loves this place, you know.
And again I always try to say, I think, like
when we're playing good and like we're playing the way
we were capable playing, I would say, like the MAC
(01:24:59):
championship game. She hit me right after the game and
it was like, I said, I think Randy would have
approved today. You know, I think like of how we
not to win. Of course, Randy and Tam will all
be happy Miami wins. They're both alums, and Randy's up
there watching us, you know, and you're like, but I
think he improved how we you know, Like when we're
like and she says, yeah, your team's remind remind me
(01:25:21):
of his teams how they play, and so to me,
that's pretty huge compliment coming from Randy Walker's wife. So
so it'd be pretty pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (01:25:30):
Chuck Martin needs one win to equal Randy Walker's fifty
nine wins as the head coach at Miami. And when
you think about coaches who have coached at Miami, Randy
Walker got a name of Woody Hayes, got the name
of Bo schim Beckler. I mean, you can just start
going down the line. There's been pretty fair coaches that
have coached there. So to be the winningest coach in
Miami is pretty special and he has a chance to
(01:25:53):
do that. So I just hope it's not this weekend, sure,
but well it's I'm excited to get a chance that
this will be the first battle of bricks game and
football that I've called. I've called a number of basketball games.
I'm looking forward to calling this football one on Saturday.
So it's gonna be fun, Marty, it will be. It'll
be a lot of fun. Big games like this always are,
(01:26:15):
big rivalry games are always a lot of fun to
be a part of. And looking forward to it. The
Horizon League preseason men's basketball polls out will tell you
about that. When we come back and Trey Shawn Holden,
the Oregon player, we'll be facing some discipline for his
well his spitting. I don't Ohio's Day player. It's the
(01:26:35):
press box. Fox Sports nine eighty WNA.
Speaker 1 (01:27:00):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three seven by three one, six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty wnaighty.
Speaker 3 (01:27:13):
And welcome back to the program Fox Sports nine eighty
woee four to forty nine. As we continue along, the
Horizon League has released its pre season basketball poll for
the men's side of the Horizon League race, and the
Right State Raiders picked the finish fifth in the poll,
with Milwaukee and Purdue Fort Wayne tied for number one,
Northern Kentucky three, Oakland four, Wright State five followed an
(01:27:35):
order by Youngstown State, Cleveland State, Green Bay, Robert Morris IU, Indianapolis,
and Detroit Mercy in the Horizon League basketball pole. So
that again we're just around the corner of November fourth,
when the college basketball season starts. Brandon Knowle of Right
State will select it as the preseason Player of the
(01:27:57):
Year in the Horizon League and also a All first
team choice, making the second team. Alex Hubricks, who has
been a guest on this show, was the was chosen
to the second team. SO College Basketball Right around the
Corner or so Oregon Wide receiver Trey Shon Holden is
expected to face disciplinary action within the Oregon football program
(01:28:19):
after he was penalized and tossed out of the game
for spitting on Ohio State cornerback Davison Igbinosen on Saturday night.
Dan Lanning, the head coach of the Duck, says he
was extremely disappointed in Holden's actions, which resulted in a
fifteen yard penalty and ejection for flagrant unsportsman like conduct landing, saying, quote,
(01:28:39):
there's absolutely zero placed for that in our program, zero
place for that in football. I've reached out to Ryan
Day and expressed my frustration in that situation. I know
Trey Shawn is extremely apologetic, he's embarrassed, he realizes how
wrong he was in the moment, and we will handle
some things internally. There you go. That's where that stands
(01:29:02):
right now. So we'll see how that plays itself out. Oregon,
oh by the way, plays this Friday night at Purdue,
so they have to come all the way back to
the Eastern time zone to play, So that will be
this Friday night in West Lafayette. So those big ten
Friday night games. Gotta love them, don't you. It just
so much fun college football on a Friday night should
(01:29:25):
not be played. Friday nights are for high schools. That's
just the way life should be. But again, what's saying that?
Do I have college realignment news? Hawaii will become the
eighth full time member of the Mountain West Conference. It's
a notable change for the Mountain West, which needed an
(01:29:45):
eighth full time member to meet the NCAA minimum to
remain a conference. Hawaii became a football only member of
the conference in twenty twelve, with most of its other
sports competing in the Big West. So the Mountain West
has lost Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State,
and Utah State to the reconfigured Big Pac twelve. I
(01:30:08):
should say, prior to this change with Hawaii, the Mountain
West had added UTEP as well too, so they have
also secured long term commitments from Air Force, Nevada, New Mexico, UNLV,
San Jose State, and Wyoming. So the Mountain West has
engaged in talks with Texas State, which decided to stay
put in the Sun Belt, and they again have showed
(01:30:31):
some interest in adding Northern Illinois and Toledo as football
only playing members. So interesting, none of that makes any
sense whatsoever. But again, no one bothers to ask those
of us that care about those things.
Speaker 4 (01:30:46):
Well, when you ask me about my favorite ACC schools,
I can't help but just gush about Stanford Cal.
Speaker 3 (01:30:52):
You know SMU.
Speaker 4 (01:30:54):
Yes, So, I mean, I don't know what you're talking about, Marty,
I can't.
Speaker 3 (01:30:58):
Can you imagine? I mean the ACC basketball tournament in March,
which has been really for years, it's been the pre
eminent basketball postseason tournament. And as you know, if you
listen to this program, especially back then, back in March
in that time of year. I'd love college basketball tournaments.
I think they're spectacular. A lot of people shouldn't be playing.
I think they're fantastic. I'd love college basketball tournaments. But well,
(01:31:22):
I can't wait for that first ACC first round game
and Charlotte at noon between Cal and Wake Forest. It
just I'm old enough. I remember the days when the
ACC was seven schools and that tournament was everything. I mean,
with Jim Thacker and Billy Packer on the play by
(01:31:43):
play and color back on the old Uh well, what
was the what was the name of that network? Oh goodness,
I knew it would run run. I'm sure somebody will
remember it and then text it to me or something.
But those days were just just fantastic. The ACC Tournament
one year, North Carolina I think it was South Carolina
(01:32:03):
they beat North Carolina went into the four corners stall
and won the game like twenty four to eleven or
something like that because they just simply weren't going to
run up and down the floor. They held the ball.
Was not happy. Yeah, that was way back. That was
back when the dunk was still not allowed in college basketball.
Speaker 5 (01:32:20):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:32:21):
Yeah, that actually happened for a while, so you could
not dunk the basketball. Yeah. Well that's the late Bill Walton,
who just passed away here recently. In the NCAA Championship
game in nineteen seventy three against Memphis State, was twenty
one of twenty two from the floor without the dunk,
which just shows you how how good a player Bill
(01:32:41):
Walton was and had I think he had twenty rebounds
or something like that in the game as well too.
But the old ACC that was seven schools, and the
ACC even back in the day, used to have what
they called the Big Four Tournament during the regular season,
where the four North Carolina schools would play a holiday tournament.
I love that Duke, NC State, North Carolina and Wake
(01:33:04):
would play a tournament, and they obviously got away from
that years later.
Speaker 4 (01:33:10):
That would be so excellent in a state like Ohio.
It's really a missed opportunity.
Speaker 3 (01:33:15):
Oh I've been a big proponent of that for a
long time. You bring Ohio State, Cincinnati, Xavier, Dayton, and
Columbus and play at the Nationwide Arena. How cool would that?
Exactly exactly how cool would that be?
Speaker 4 (01:33:27):
I'd be I would be there, I'm telling you, I
would be in the building.
Speaker 3 (01:33:31):
Yeah, And I think you could rotate it every year
where on years where Cincinnati and Xavier would be slated
to play in that event, then you drop one of
them out because they have their own rivalry game, the
Crosstown Showdown. You drop one of those teams out of
it and bring in oh An, Ohio, a Cleveland State,
(01:33:51):
a right state, somebody like that, to just kind of
spice it up a little bit and give those schools
a crack at it. But what fun would that be
for college basketball fans?
Speaker 6 (01:34:00):
It would be so much fun, which which is why
it will never happen.
Speaker 3 (01:34:04):
Yeah, man, we have to we have to play Alabama
A and M. We have to play Prairie View. We
have to do things like that. Yeah, that would be
good though, that would be good, which, yes, we sure can.
Nationally Championship Series resumes tonight in New York Dodgers and Mets.
A little bit after I think it's seven thirty eight
(01:34:25):
is the first pitch in a game number three of
the series, which is level at a victory at peace.
The American League Championship Series. It's a travel day. They
will pick back up tomorrow in Cleveland with Game three
of that series, with the Yankees on top two games
to none. Tomorrow on this program, we will go in
depth into the Battle of Ohio. On Sunday, our number one,
(01:34:46):
Damon Wolf from Dogs by Nature will join us. Our
number two, our friend, Anthony Coscenza. Well, I'm sure Damon
Wolf could be our friend. I don't know. We just
haven't had him on the program. We've had Anthony Cossenzo on,
so we kind of put him in our friend category.
Will join us at our number two from Orange and
Black Illustrated, and we'll get an update as far as
both sides of the game coming up on Sunday and
(01:35:08):
is it going to be a game? Is it going
to be well for all our I gotta update our
Fami almost forgot about that before we leave. Our fan
pole has gone final on both the questions today putting
a dome on pay Course Stadium in Cincinnati. Fifty to
fifty was the split on the vote, and we asked
you who wins the game Sunday between the Bengals and
the Browns. The Bengals win it, win the poll eighty
(01:35:31):
three percent of the vote to sixteen percent for the Browns,
and I sure hope it's that white a margin on
the field on Sunday, but I know it won't be,
as I've said before. So there you have that. Yeah,
you guys might be in trouble. You might be in trouble.
I don't know, wreck right, I don't four I'm a
wreck for a game between the two and four and
one on five team. I guess I just care to
(01:35:52):
It's hard to be you right now. It's hard to me.
It's hard to be me on any day of the week, Sunday, Tuesday,
any day of the week. It's I think it's even
harder to live with me. Just ask Amy. Okay, that'll
do it for the program. We're back with you tomorrow
from three to five. Thanks to Bill Bender from The
Sporting News always enjoy his visits and University of Dayton
(01:36:13):
men's soccer coach Dennis Courier. We appreciate your time. Congratulation
to the Flyers. I'm beating the number one team in
the nation yesterday, West Virginia Mountaineers, and we appreciate him
spending some timeless and thank you for being with us.
As always here in the press box, thanks to Kelly B.
And we'll just thank everybody, just thank you for being
with us. We're back tomorrow three to five. It's the
