Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the press Box with Marty Banister, the latest
on all local sports from right State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine three seven by three one six,
one seven zero the press Box on Fox Sports nine
(00:20):
eighty WN right now.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Unfortunately, there were no uh well it wasn't any serious
serious damage and no injury. So we're that's the positive
about all that yesterday. But it was, well, Hayy, downtown
yesterday wasn't.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Kelly, Absolutely absolutely, I'm super glad that it's calm down
and hoping that it stays calm. Now, keep writing that
calm wave here in the downtown area.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
You seem a little mellow today, are you okay?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Oh yeah, yeah, I'm I'm tired, but you know, regular degular.
It's like yesterday was hump Day. Today feels like another
kind of Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Another kind of home day. Yeah yeah, all right, all right,
But we have a lot to get into in a
program in this affternoon, we'll preview the Battle of Ohio
the Bengals and Browns coming up on Sunday in Cleveland.
We have a lot to get into Damon Wolf from
Dogs by Nature. We'll visit with us. Normally Jared Mueller
from Dogs by Nature as our kind of go to
guests when we talk about the Browns. He's unavailable today,
but Damon was kind enough to step in and pinch
(01:23):
it for Jared, so we'll talk to him coming up
in about fifteen minutes next hour. Anthony Coscenza from at
Sincy Jungle and at Bengals Orange and Black Illustrated, we'll
visit with us to preview the game from the Cincinnati
side of things. So that's what we have coming up
on the program for you today. We'll also hear some
comments from the manager of your Cleveland Guardians, Steven Vote,
who played Game three of the American League Championship Series
(01:46):
this afternoon. First pitch is almost exactly two hours from
now as they go at it, as Tom Hamilton would say,
at the corner of Ontario and Carnegie for game number
three of this series in the American League Championshi. So
that's what we have for you to take. A couple
of fan pulls up for you this afternoon. One of
them deals with the Browns, and we'll ask you today
(02:07):
if you are Browns general manager Andrew Berry, do you
make any more deals prior to the NFL trade deadline
on November the fifth? Well, of course, the Amari Cooper
deal yesterday was the one that stirred a lot of
discussion about where the Browns are at right now. So
we ask you, would you make another deal or two
or whatever? Yes, get let's get more draft picks and
(02:29):
start the rebuild, know, keep the core group together, or
trade anyone but Nick Chubb and Miles Garrett. So right now,
let's get draft picks. Is getting sixty percent of the
vote right now.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
So yeah, yeah, you got it.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
That's the kind of get some mindset right now, don't you.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
Yeah, you at this point, just get through this year,
get as much as you can, get as much as
you can, and listen, I know a couple of Washington
commanders who would love to to steal a couple of
cornerbacks from over there. Okay, So I mean, I'm sure
that there's so much talent, especially on the defensive side
(03:08):
of Cleveland, that if you don't take advantage of this
and you let these guys just walk out of your
building or you try to, because yeah, you right now
you need it.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
You need some picks. You need a quarterback, and.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
You need to build with those picks around whoever you
end up drafting. Right now, the Browns have the second
overall pick in the draft. That's where we're at with
the Browns. We know what pick they got.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Right, I would not be opposed to if they would
deal Denzel Ward and Grant Delpit, and I would love
delp some Do it now, don't wait till Sunday. Just
go ahead, do it now, find a trade, get it
over with. So so it's easier for Joe Burrow on Sunday.
I'm all about here.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
Yeah, yeah, you've got some ulterior motives.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
I also straight straight, So that for a couple of hours.
Also today we're asking you there are four six and
O teams in the top six of the AP Coaches
and the AP or the Coaches College Football Top twenty
five polls different order, but there are four six and
O teams in the top six. We're asking which of
(04:15):
those is the next one to lose a game? Is
it Texas? Is it Oregon? Is it Penn State is
at Miami of Florida, And right now Penn State is
getting fifty percent of the vote. Folks, seemingly forget that
Texas is playing Georgia this weekend.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
So also we not that I think that, not that
I believe in the announcers jinks. But the last time
we did a poll like this, Marty, we pretty much
set up every team that.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
We use Oabama, we set up Alabama. Who was the
other one?
Speaker 4 (04:43):
Okay, Tennessee was it?
Speaker 2 (04:44):
It was Tennessee. Yeah, it was Tennessee. It was Alabama
and Tennessee.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
And so I feel bad. I feel bad voting for
this one.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Well, I think I think Oregon's okay. Yeah, they may
have some jet lag. They have to play at West
Lafayette against Purdue tomorrow night. I think they'll be okay,
and that's a short week for them again coming off
that emotional win over Ohio State. Then they got to
get on a plane. I don't know if My guess
is they probably left some time early yesterday for West
Lafayette or early today rather for West Lafayette to get
(05:14):
over to a Purdue. But the game is tomorrow night,
so it's a short week for Oregon. Now Penn State,
I think Penn State is idle this week. Of course,
their attention and most of as we talked here to
day with Bill Bender of The Sporting News. The majority
of the college football world's attention at Penn State rests
(05:34):
on Ohio State visiting on November the second, But they've
got a titanic one next week. They have to go
on the road and play at Wisconsin next Saturday night,
so they have their buy this weekend. The next three
games for Penn State will tell you what. They are
at Wisconsin on Saturday the twenty sixth, then of course,
the Ohio State game on November the second, and then
(05:55):
after that they play host to Washington. Now Washington's not
what they were last year, but I mean they gave
up forty points to Iowa for goodness sake, So I
can't tell you the last time Iowa scored forty points
a game against the Division one opponent or a Power
five opponent.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
But this different though, Yeah, it.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Is, it is. But that's what's the head. That's what's
the head for Penn State. So if they can, if
they navigate their way through those three games, then the
Lions are rolling that they won't lose again because they
have Penn State Minnesota, or they have Penn State, they
have Perdue Minnesota and Maryland left and they'll roll right
to the Big Ten championship. They should.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
I think the easy answer is Miami is Florida. Miami
and Florida the Hurricanes. They have almost been beaten, what
is it, two weeks in a row, now a row,
and so how can you do you keep pushing your
luck like it's not like and it's not like they
were playing Georgia at Cal's not the best team ever,
(06:51):
but they're not horrible. I was surprised that Cal had
gotten them to the point of having to win the
game last minute, so you know they've got you like
to look at the schedule, Lueville coming up, Florida State.
I think that's a safe game. Actually, Duke Georgia Tech
wake Forest Syracuse. I think Syracuse could give them.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
The only game that if you look back at Miami schedule,
which apparently is the one that is giving them so
much credibility with voters, is that season opening when in
Gainesville when they drilled Florida. Because after that they beat well,
they beat Florida A and m Okay, they blanked Ball State,
then they won at South Florida. Then they edged as
(07:35):
you mentioned, Virginia Tech and cal in back to back
games by a grand total of five points. Yeah, so
I don't know that they're the jug or not of
old Miami. But hey, six and oh six and oh,
what's the what's the Rex Rex Ryan line? Your Bill Parcells? Rather,
you are what your record says you are, and they're
(07:56):
unbeaten at six and oh, so you you take it
and run.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
So, yeah, you beat the team.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
Is that your schedule to play?
Speaker 2 (08:01):
That's okay, you can't complain about that. So but again
those two polls up for you again until about four
to forty five or so this afternoon. Some other college
football news, Arizona State quarterback Sam Levitt is out for
the game against Cincinnati this week. Again, Arizona State at Cincinnati.
That's a conference game, Big twelve game at Nippert on
(08:23):
a Saturday, so Elevitt will miss that one for the
Arizona State Sun Devils. Other than that, it is a
relatively quiet day around the world of sports, with the
baseball games coming up a little bit later on today. Again,
the Guardians and Yankees and Dodgers and Mets, and the
Dodgers last night just spanked the Mets. I mean it
(08:46):
was it was ugly, and this is a Dodgers team too.
That's they're starting. Pitching isn't what it's been in past years,
and they're still rolling right along. So Los Angeles with
the win and they're up to they're up two games
to one in the National League Championship Series. So that
(09:08):
continues with both baseball games again a little bit later
on this afternoon. There are smattering of high school football
games around the area tonight usual Thursday, tomorrow night, and
we'll have the iHeart Football high school football radio bits
coming up for you tomorrow afternoon at four fifteen. There
are tomorrow night. You can go to just about every
single league slash conference in maybe the southwest part of
(09:32):
the state, and there is a game tomorrow night that
either will clinch a conference championship for the winner or
give them a share of a conference championship. That's how
important Week nine is. I mean, you go just about
any league. You go to the Greater Miami Conference, you
go to the Greater Western Ohio Conference, the EWC. There
are three four to one teams, Fairmount and Springfield tangle
(09:54):
tomorrow night. They're both Ford and one centerveills four and one.
You look at the game that my the game of
the year though, is Week ten, and that's Xenia Tip,
and they're both unbeaten right now and both just steamrolling
towards that game next Friday night, which should be just
a lot of fun. Xenia Tip. We'll try and do
something with that. I think next week on the program
(10:15):
might have to try and line up one or both
head coaches, because what you would have if they both
survived their games tomorrow night, you would have two undefeated
teams on either division. Tip in the Miami Zenion the
Valley Division playing for basically the Miami Valley League championship
because the way that league is set up, it's split
(10:38):
into two divisions, but you still play everybody. You just
cross over and you could declare one division champ and
the other. So you will have whichever team wins that
game next week, barring not that one of them get
beat tomorrow night, you will have a de facto conference
championship game next Friday night.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Pretty dope it is.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
It is, So that'll be a lot of fun and
we'll try and line something. Hopefully both those teams can
get past their Week nine games tomorrow night. Also down
in the Cincinnati area tomorrow night in the East Cincinnati Conference.
This is unique and it's worth mentioning in the East
Cincinnati Conference. In that league, Winton Woods and Anderson are
(11:19):
tied for the league lead. Winton Woods is ranked number
two in the state and Division one, Anderson is ranked
number three in the state in Division two and they
play tomorrow night at Anderson and that's going to be
a heck of a high school football game, it really is.
So again, a lot of that coming up though tomorrow
night when we give you our iHeartRadio Friday Football Blitz
(11:41):
and looking forward to that as well. Todd Walker does
a great job with that, So we'll have that coming
up for you tomorrow. But there's some big, big games
coming up week number nine of the high school football season.
We're three weeks away from the start of the high
school football playoffs. National high league action continues. As we
roll along here on this Thursday, we'll give you an
update on where all that stands in the WNBA playoffs
(12:02):
are close to ending, and it has been a great
series for a great year for the WNBA. I mean,
I think you can even go back to when the
season started the way the attention has been focused on.
Lee Kelly will have another edition of for the Ladies tomorrow,
so looking forward to that. So it has been a
great year for the WNBA. I think it's only going
(12:24):
to trend upwards.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Yeah, the most people ever will have watched the playoffs
this season. They're averaging over a million viewers a game,
which is something like two hundred and fifty thousand more
than they had gotten in the previous seasons. So that's growth.
And Caitlyn Clark is not playing, so it's not just her, right,
(12:48):
it's not just her. I just want to say that
and shout out to Kaitlyn Clark, but you know, and
she's going to be in the postseason, trust and believe
the way she's playing, it's just not her. Time's a rookie.
Let's let's again, let's give these rookies a minute to
breathe when they get We can't do that, I know,
and I think we're losing some of their their ability
(13:11):
by developing them too fast without you know, there used
to be a time where you really had to set
and learn the game before they let you touch the ball.
You're just carrying them for the other players. So let's
let's get back to that a little bit, A little bit,
all stop it, I know, I know, it's It's Kelly's
(13:32):
curmudgeon corner today.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
As the Great Cosmo Kramer would say, that's Kookie talking
all right. Three fifteen is the tight. When we come back,
we will talk about the Battle of Ohio. Bengals and
Browns meet for the first time this year on Sunday
up in Cleveland. Damon Wolfe will visit with us from
Dogs by Nature and we'll get the Cleveland perspective on things.
And the next hour, Anthony Cscenza at Sincy Jungle will
(13:56):
visit with us as well Guardians and Yankees and five
oho eight Today Blue Jackets are home to night as well.
They have the Buffalo Sabers in for seven o'clock puck
drop more of the press box. Great to have you
with us here on this Thursday on Fox Sports nine eighty.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
W goa name, get on the press box called Marty
(14:42):
now at nine three seven by three one six, one
seven zero the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty
wn eighty.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
And welcome back to the program with you on this
Thursday afternoon. Great to have you with us, and we
are with you right up until five o'clock when I
was giving the show down. I didn't forget this on purpose.
I just forgot it because I just tend to forget
things once in a while. We don't forget. We have
another edition of the Magnificent Seven coming up for you.
We'll do that for you next hour, where Kelly and
I give you our top seven teams in the National
(15:13):
Football League. And again we don't base it on conference.
We just base it on the top seven in each
in the overall. And we will do that for you
next hour, and I will have my seven and Kaylea
have her incorrect seven, and we'll do that and then
you get an update on all that. Absolutely so all right,
we'll do that for you next hour. Here in the
press box. Well, we know one team that's not in that,
(15:34):
well two of them that aren't in that. They play
on Sunday when the Bengals and the Browns get together
in Cleveland for the first of their two matchups and
the Battle of will Highland. Visiting with us right now
the live line from Dogs by Nature, as Damon Wolfe
has been kind enough to give us some time this afternoon. David,
I appreciate your time. Thanks for jumping in with us
here today and talking a little football. Let's number one.
Before we talk about the game itself, let me get
(15:55):
your reaction to what happened yesterday, the trading of Amari
Cooper to the Buffalo Bills. Were you surprise by that?
Number one?
Speaker 5 (16:02):
Well, I can't say that I was surprised overall, Marty,
but I was a little surprised by the timing of
the move. You know, I thought possibly that might happen
a little bit closer to the trade deadline, and the
fact that it happened before our first division game certainly
is a little little surprising and perplexing.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
Yeah, but I is it fair to say, Damon that
when I asked you if you were surprised, I guess
maybe that's from a fan standpoint, but from a team standpoint,
from a covering the franchise standpoint. Did it surprise you
in that regard because you had to think something of
that line was coming.
Speaker 5 (16:43):
Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, you know the way that this
organization values draft picks. You know, the fact that they
are one in five after the first six games of
the season. You know, the writing's pretty much been on
the wall ever since, you know, going back to training
camp at the MARII being unsatisfied with his contract this year.
(17:04):
So you know, really, at the end of the day,
it's not a huge surprise, but I just thought that
maybe they might hold off a couple more weeks before
they pulled the trigger on that.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
What was your impression of what you were getting out
of Amari Cooper up until this point? I mean, what
did he He led the league in drop passes or
something or some stat like that, or it was among
the leaders in that category. I mean, this is a
guy who obviously is an all pro caliber white out
in one of the I think probably fair to say,
one of the top ten in the game. It almost
appeared that his focus just wasn't there. Is that a
(17:36):
fair assessment of what you saw from him through six games?
Speaker 5 (17:40):
Yeah, I think that that's definitely a fair assessment. You know,
I think that something was at play, you know, pretty
much between the ears with his performance this season so
far to date. And I don't know if it was
because he was pressing a little bit too hard, or
you know, with this being a contract year, or if
(18:01):
you know, you know, possibly that missing time and OTAs
in camp maybe set them back a little bit physically.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
Well, there's that possibility as well too. Damon Wilf visiting
with us on the live line from Dogs by Nature
as we talk about the Browns and the Bengals coming
up on Sunday in Cleveland. There is something about this
game that has obviously it terrifies me every year being
a Bengals fan when you head up to get ready
to play it. But take me to the brown side
of it right now. I don't want to say that
(18:34):
it's that the white flag has been run up right now,
but I think everybody's pretty much realistic even at one
in five, even if they win on Sunday, getting to
the postseason is pretty much a pipe dream right now
because of the hole they've dug themselves into. But what
does this game, What does it do for them if
they win it on Sunday?
Speaker 5 (18:54):
You know, if they win it, I think it does
give them possibly a glimmer of hope that they can
maybe possibly turn things around, no matter how unlikely that
seems to be at the moment. You know, what's really
disappointing about the season overall is the fact that they're
sitting at one in five after the easiest part of
(19:15):
their schedule, so you know, things only gets tougher from here,
and the Bengals are coming to town and we have
you know, over the past several seasons have had some
success under Kevin Stefanski, specifically in regard to these matchups. However,
right now, the Browns just look like a totally different
(19:35):
team to start the season, and currently they are just
looking for answers, especially on the offensive side of the ball,
and really looking for anything that they can do to
get more of a rhythm.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
That's the thing that I think has been so surprising
this year, Damon, is the fact that the offense. I mean,
I don't think anybody thought that Deshaun Watson was going
to come out and do a Patrick Mahomes in pray
this year, But I think everybody thought you would still
be better than what they have been. Is it Ken Dorsey,
is it Deshaun Watson? Is it a combination of both,
(20:09):
is it neither? Is it the injuries? From your from
your standpoint, what do you see as the reason the
offense has struggled?
Speaker 5 (20:17):
Yeah, Marty, that's the million dollar question right now, and
we're all trying to figure it out. I believe that,
you know, there's multiple things in play. You know, the
narrative coming in was that if the Browns could just
get to Shaun Watson to play you know, efficient and
functional within the offense, that things would you know, that
(20:39):
the Browns could win and the Browns could compete for
the division. However, you know, with all of the the
changes that were made on the offensive side of the ball,
you know, we got we parted ways with Alex van Pelt,
Kevin Stefancy's offensive coordinator who's been here for the past
four seasons, and you know, also Stuff Mitchell, the running
(21:00):
backs coach, and they they brought in, you know, coaches
with diverse background from Stefan Skis and Ken Dorsey obviously
being the main one, uh, coming over from his previous
time in Buffalo, was supposed to really help out with
his shotgun and RPO game, and that has all really
looked very disjointed at this point, and uh, you know,
(21:24):
we're searching for the answers as to why that is.
And we don't know if it's quite you know, a
marriage issue with with Stefanski and him trying to merge
both worlds together, or if you know also that the
issues could possibly stem back from training camp and you know,
they did have to uh manage Deshaun Watson as he
(21:49):
was coming off the shoulder injury that required surgery last year. Uh,
you know, they were in camp trying to run practice
or not camp necessarily, but OTAs and all through the
off season trying to run practices. But at the same
time they had to manage the workload on the shoulder.
You know, they would have to determine how many, you know,
how much distance Wasson could throw on a certain day,
(22:11):
how many you know, reps he could take, and all
that kind of stuff. So I'm sure that was an
issue to really work through. But yeah, the offense is
just really struggling right now and really trying to find
some answers.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
Damon Wolf visiting with his dogs by Nature Covers. The
Cleveland Browns were getting ready for the Browns and the
Bengals on Sunday in Cleveland. You touched on it a
moment ago. The Browns, for whatever reason, have had success
against Cincinnati. The Bengals are what I think their last ten,
they're like two to eight against the Browns, and there
just seems to be a I don't know what the
(22:43):
mindset is. Cincinnati just just doesn't play well against Cleveland,
I don't know, believe me. Being a Bengals fan, it's
extremely frustrating to have to sit and watch when that happens.
Do you think that that helps Cleveland, Damon in a
lot of respects going into this game on Sunday, knowing
that they've had that success in the past. They know
they can beat Joe Burrow, they know they can beat
this team. I would think that has to be something
(23:05):
that they're kind of banking on going into this one
on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (23:08):
Yeah, I definitely agree. I think for the team, they
definitely have a little bit of confidence coming in, you know,
against the Mingles, but it'll be a tough test for them. Overall.
The defense hasn't necessarily performed up to expectation either, with
all of the focus being on the shortcomings of the offense.
(23:31):
They've had a little bit of regression this year, which is,
you know, to be expected a little bit. But it'll
certainly be interesting to see what all happens on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
And the other part of it, too, Damon is the
fact that it's expected that Nick Chubb is going to
be activated and will play in the game. Now he's
not going to come out, Why sure, hope not and
carry the ball thirty five times and run for two
hundred yards in this game. If he does, it's going
to be a long Sunday for some of us. But
from that standpoint, I think, and I know you're you're
probably the same way that I am, the way my
(24:06):
producer Kelly is. For football fans, we want to see
this guy back on the field. I don't care what
uniform he's wearing. I thought before he got hurt last year,
he was the best running back in the National Football
League And just from that standpoint, Damon, it'll be good
to have him back on the field. One. I mean,
he's a football player. You want to see him on
the field.
Speaker 5 (24:24):
Yeah, that'll be a real shot in the arm for
you know, the entire organization and all of the fan base.
You know, I expect that, you know, that's the main
draw at this point is to see Chubb back in action,
and having him back out there will be great, regardless
of the results that are produced. I think we need
to kind of temper our expectations, especially here in the
(24:47):
first couple of games, getting back and getting back into it.
And like you said, Marty, I don't think he'll have
a huge workload and they will try to probably eat
him back over the next several weeks.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
I think that's probably the way we're going to see this.
I've got to ask you for many moments that we
have Damon as I mentioned Damon Wolf from Dogs by Nature,
visiting with his covers, the Cleveland Browns, the Deshaun Watson.
I don't even know if it's fair to call it
an experiment now because I think we're way past that
right now. What's the end game here? From your from
your seat covering this team, it, well, they try to
(25:21):
do whatever they can to divest themselves from him after
the season is over, do they sit back and just see, well,
let's give it one more year. They're kind of in
a no win situation, are they not right now with him.
Speaker 5 (25:35):
Yeah, it's it's definitely not a good scenario to be
in if you're the Browns. He hasn't lived up to
that contract at you know, at all, so it's really
tough to get out of after the season. As well,
there is a little bit of financial relief if they
(25:56):
were to keep him on the roster for next year
as well, And there's there's talks about the possibility of
somehow him being on the roster but possibly not being
around the team kind of situation, but we're not exactly
sure how that would work. But yeah, there's definitely no
easy answers for it, and unfortunately any kind of trade
(26:18):
proposals and things of that nature are pretty far fett
in my opinion.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
Right. We talked about that the other day, Damon, about
there aren't going to be any teams lining up calling
Andrew Berry before four o'clock on November the fifth, going hey,
what about that quarterback you guys have, We might want
to take a look at him. There there aren't to
be any of those phone calls. I wouldn't think, I
would think all in all, with the history of this franchise,
(26:44):
certainly since it came back in nineteen ninety nine, I've
seen a lot of people, Damon say that this is
worse than the old sixteen year, which I just can't fathom.
How do you say that? I mean, there's nothing worse
than oldin sixteen. But this season obviously bought off the
rails for this. This franchise is frustrating or passed frustrating
(27:06):
too easy a way to kind of just kind of
describe what has happened up there this year.
Speaker 5 (27:14):
Well, you know, I get the sentiment that this season
could be as just as frustrating, if not more frustrating
than the oh and sixteen because of the expectations that
everybody had coming into it. So you know, back when
we were zero and sixteen, we had you know, we
had just come off of one in fifteen season, so
(27:35):
we weren't expecting much to begin with, so we were
pretty familiar with that territory. You know. So this season
has been very rough for the fan base, and you know,
Wasson's play certainly, and just it's not only the lose
you know, the record at this point, I mean with
Wasson's play, you know, the Browns have kind of become
(27:56):
the you know, joke of the NFL again simply by
the contract of and how Watson has played. And you know,
in the national media perspective, you know, Browns fans, every
time we turn on you know, log into Twitter or
turn on ESPN, that's you know, something about Watson and
the contract and how we're stuck. So it's definitely been frustrating,
(28:20):
and I think for the fan base in the beginning
of the season, there's been a lot of apathy in
regard to the situation, and unfortunately, I'm feeling that that
apathy is turning into more anger and that could be
that could be taken out. Don't be surprised, if, you know,
if Watson doesn't come out and light it up right away.
(28:43):
I mean, the fans are going to be careful, you know,
we don't want to do anything disrespectful with you know,
Nick Chubb coming back for his first game. But at
the same time, if when there's opportunities to do Watson,
this fan base is going.
Speaker 6 (28:55):
To do it.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
Yeah. I think you're right, Damon Wolf. It's a pleasure.
I appreciate your time, good insight to what we'll see
on Sunday in Cleveland as the Browns and the Bengals
get together for the first of their two regular season meetings.
I appreciate your time and hopefully we can have you
back on a little bit later on the season.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
Thanks again, Yeah, thanks again, Marty, really appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (29:12):
Uh, no problem from my dogs by nature. Damon Wolf
visiting was and I agree with him. The frustrating part
of it has to be the expectations coming into this
year as opposed to oh, w and sixteen. When you're
coming off a one in fifteen, any of your expectations were,
let's just win a game. Yeah, that's what we're looking
at right now. And that's kind of where I think
(29:34):
this year. Maybe I can understand where some Browns fans
are saying this is worse than that, because the expectations
were that this five and one would be four and
two at the very worst three and three, and I
think a lot of people thought, heck, they could even
be five and one going into this game. Right three
thirty four is a time well a day two in
(29:54):
our fan polls, Magnificent seven coming up next hour, and
so much more. It's the press box Fox Sports nine
eighty W.
Speaker 1 (30:29):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three, seven by three, one, six, one, seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN eight.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
Three thirty nine. As we continue along here in the
press box Fox Sports nine eighty w OWNI we'd like
to thank Damon Wolf for visiting with us from Dogs
by Nature as we talk about the Cleveland half of
the Battle of Ohio, which comes up on Sunday. In Cleveland,
game number one of the two game get together between
the two. They'll meet on a Thursday night in Cincinnati
in December. Is the second game of the series between
(31:04):
the two, so that a little bit later on the
Bengals have two Thursday night games against division rivals. They
have to go to Baltimore in a few weeks and
then that game with the Browns coming up. I think
it's December, the fifth, I believe, is the Thursday night game,
so which will also be the first night of the
OHSA football playoffs.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
So, by the way, so flying through the year.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
Yeah, it is. It is December fifth, isn't. I think
it is the second game between the two. Did you
look it up? I'll call it up here real fast
as well too and check. I believe it is, or
it's the fifth or the twelfth or something like that,
but it is. I think it is Thursday. It is
a Thursday night. I know that.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
So the fifth through the seventh I knew.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
I knew that. I knew the state playoffs for the
fifth through the seventh that much I knew. I was
trying to figure out if the if the Bengals game,
the second matchup between the Bengals and the Browns was
on that also on that day I think it is.
I'm not certain. Well, we'll check and see here, we'll
do our usual JFGI and figure it out for you again.
Baseball this afternoon, Guardian December nineteenth. Okay, oh good, A
(32:11):
way to ruin Christmas super so yeah, okay, So December
the nineteenth, Guardians and Yankees first pitches at five eight
of this afternoon in game number three of the America
League Championship Series. And then tonight it's Game four of
the National League Championship Series between the Dodgers and the Mets.
(32:33):
So the baseball playoffs roll right along. Blue Jackets are
home tonight as well too, when they welcome in Buffalo
to nights will drop the pocket a little bit after
seven o'clock. In Columbus. There's also college football on tap
for tonight, usual Thursday games, there's an NFL game on
tap for tonight as well too. As we roll along
here on this Thursday, the college games again, we're in
(32:58):
that stretch where there's a college football game every night
of the week. Tonight, Georgia State plays at Marshall. That
one will kick at seven o'clock, and then in the
ACC Boston College is at Virginia Tech. That one will
kick at seven thirty this evening. The New Orleans Saints
started out as if they were going to set all
kinds of NFL offensive records, but they have been dealing
(33:21):
with a lot of injuries. Heck, they had to start
Spencer Rattler a quarterback last week in their game against Tampa.
They play host to Denver tonight. That's the NFL game
and it will start a little bit after eight o'clock
this evening. But it seemed like the first like they
had either had over forty in each game or had
forty and one of the first two. But they just
started out with a healthy Derek Carr and then when
(33:42):
he went down with that labor man it was a
laboram injury or a quad one of the two. But
then when he went down, that offense kind of spun
off its off its wheels. And because they again they
sure look. I think we even talked about it one week, Kelly,
when they had I think they'd beat Dallas, and we went,
I'll tell you what, if they keep doing that, they're
gonna set a lot of records. Well, obviously that all
(34:04):
came to a screen. They're two and four right now,
and they have three and three Denver this evening, and
again that one will kick a little bit after eight
fifteen tonight. I want to go back to that point
about the Owen sixteen being worse than where you're at
right now if you're a Browns fan, and I fully
get that. I think the more I've thought about it
(34:25):
during the break, what Damon Will said about the expectations
and whatnot, and I remember it was easy to laugh
at Browns fans during that and sixteen. But I can't
imagine that the Lions have done it too. The Lions
were Owen sixteen. They were the first ones to do it.
(34:46):
Was that eight I think it was when they did it,
And but I just I get that after because initially,
when I heard that comment, I thought, well, how could
anything be worse than Owen sixteen. But if you said
I don't really start to analyze it a little bit,
it does make a little bit of sense because of
the expectations, because of everything that surrounded the team going
(35:07):
into this year. The hope was, well, maybe this guy
finally got it together. That guy meaning Deshaun Watson. You
knew you were without Nick Chubb, but again you also
knew you had a schedule that kind of fell in
your favor in some areas and you had an opportunity.
I mean, you're six games in, this is your first
division game.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
Yeah. Well, I think you're right that the reason this
feels worse is because of the expectations and thus the disappointment.
But when you really think about it, it's not like
Joe Flacco was playing lights out last season, so the
hope was Deshaun Watson doesn't even have to get back
(35:48):
to Deshaun Watson of the Texans. He just has to
be good enough. And this feels worse because not only
is he not playing lights out, but he's not even
good enough right now, and the disappointment just happened. Yeah,
the disappointment just has to be I mean visceral at
(36:12):
this point because your hopes were so high based on, well,
we've got this awesome defense. We're bringing a lot of
guys back from injury. Last season, they did it with
the their third stringers in a lot of positions because
everyone was so beat.
Speaker 4 (36:28):
Up, and now you got you get these guys back.
Speaker 3 (36:31):
The defense, while still good, isn't isn't as great as
it was last season, and now your offense is horrendous.
So all of that energy you had on defense, you're
not giving it this season because no matter what you do,
you know that this other guy is gonna come out
here and nothing is gonna happen.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
Right, Yeah, those are all very good points. I think
you're right, and that that's where that frustrate, frustration part
of it comes in and really just eats away at
you because the feeling becomes, well, here we go again,
another lost season. And that's the comment I've heard from
a lot of Browns fans as well too. Here we
are again. We're wasting another year, wasting another year of
(37:15):
Miles Garrett, wasting another year of Nick Chubb, wasting another
year of David and Joku. Were these guys, these career
these generational type players that this franchise has not had,
and now you have them, and it's just, Yeah, the
feeling of helplessness I think has to be there. From
(37:38):
that standpoint, I don't know how it could how it
could not be that way. Quite frankly, and again, as
I said, I I obviously I'm a huge Bengals Fanily
I want Cincinnati to win, but as I've got a
lot of Browns fans who are friends, and you hear
a lot of them say, I'm not even watching on Sunday. Yeah,
(37:59):
we're going on out. I've had I had a couple
of guys text me and say, I'm not the game Sunday.
I'm going golfing. I've got other things to do. We've
got a my niece has a birthday party on Sunday.
We're going to that. And not that you shouldn't be
doing those things regards, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (38:13):
You should go to your niece's birthday. Yeah, that's she
only turns three ones once in her life, Marty.
Speaker 2 (38:19):
I don't know if she's three or not. I don't
know how. But those are things that a football game
probably shouldn't interrupt. But but do and I and I
get it, I understand, but I think that's where a
lot of these fans are. If if they were five
and one, it obviously the pheeling would be immensely different. Yeah,
(38:40):
no question a Sunday. And it's just I just I mean,
I know, I know as a Bengals fan when we
went through the nineties, the joke that was the nineties,
I mean, they were the Bungles, the Bungles, and I mean,
I kept waiting for a sixteen. I thought that was
surely coming at some point when you're playing the type
(39:01):
of people they played at quarterback and the things that
didn't go well there. But yeah, it's I that frustration
part of it that's amazing to me. Really is all right.
Three forty seven, it's the press box. We're with you
here up until five o'clock. And next hour, Anthony Cosenza
visits with us. We'll talk about the game from the
Bengal side of things coming up, and again there's NFL tonight,
(39:22):
there is college football baseball playoffs is well, so much
going on. It's the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty WNA.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
Get on the press box called Marty now had nine
to three seven by three one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty wn E
three fifty one.
Speaker 2 (39:56):
As we were along with you here on this Thursday afternoon.
It's the press box, Fox Sports. It's nine to eight
WNE and we have a lot to get into in
the program today. Next hour, Anthony Colesenza visits with us
from Orange and Black Illustrated at since he Jungle dot Com.
We'll get the Cincinnati side of things for Sunday's matchup
between the Bengals and the Browns. It's a big weekend
for a lot of things. Of course, the baseball playoffs
(40:16):
are rolling right along right now, and in the American League.
In about an hour, it's Cleveland and New York in
game number three of that series. The Guardians are down
two games to none. Manager Stephen Vote on the off
day yesterday, addressed the media talking about his confidence in
his baseball team as they get ready for today's game
number three.
Speaker 7 (40:35):
No, we're always confident going into every game. We love
playing at home, we love playing in front of our fans,
and I think for us, knowing we have three games here,
we feel really good about it. You know, obviously we
would have loved to have taken one in New York,
but we still feel really good about our chances. Matt
Boyd's gonna start tomorrow. I think Hosey just needs to
(40:57):
be him right, He needs to be himself, and he
has been. He had really good at bats last night.
You know, he had opportunity. You know, we all expect
him to get the big hit every single time he
gets up there, but he's done that to himself. And
we've talked about it all year. He's one of the
best players in the league. And if there's anybody I'm
confident in coming out tomorrow ready to go, it's gonna
be Hosy. And you know, he's been our best player
(41:19):
all year and he continues to be. You know, anytime
you're around an elite player like that, and you know,
they they want the moment, they want to be the
guy they and they thrive on that. And I mean
we saw it all year, Hose.
Speaker 3 (41:31):
He's done that. He's stepped up.
Speaker 7 (41:32):
Huge for us in big situations, and I expect nothing less.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
In a perfect world.
Speaker 7 (41:36):
You want to keep playing. You know, you want to go,
but you know, with the schedule, use the off day,
get the guys the day off, some rest, reset, and
come in ready to go tomorrow. It's a good thing.
We love playing, we love being out there, and so
the schedule is what it is.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
Steven Vote, manager of the Cleveland Guardians, And again I'll
throw Matthew Boyd at the Yankees this afternoon. They will
start Clark Schmidt in this game, number three of the series.
And we had talked earlier when the series started. For
the Guardians, the goal was to get one of those
two games and knowing you had three at home and
keep it from the potential of going back to New York. Well,
(42:14):
now it will go back if you get one of these. Well,
I mean you have to get two of them to
send it back to New York. Yeah, this, I mean
you hear Obviously you're in that part of this gat.
I mean it's everything's most win right now. I mean
that kind of goes last saying. But I just think that,
as we said yesterday, I don't think the Yankees. They're
(42:36):
obviously I guess they'd be the favorite, but they're not
a dominating baseball team. I think the Guardians have hurt themselves,
certainly the other night in Game two with some mistakes
and their inability to get runners home with in scoring positions.
So I don't think it's a situation where the Yankees
have come out and just drubbed them. I mean, they
won six to three, but I think it was closer
(42:56):
than that in Game two the other night. So I
just in Cleveland home, it's it's in the postseason. As
we've seen, they're different there. Everybody that plays on their
home field has that edge. That's why I think this
afternoon is going to be interested if the Yankees win today. Well,
let's let's be serious. You're down three to zero, and
(43:17):
how many have made that come back the Red Sox
and that that list is awfully short. So, uh, this
will be another one of those. I think for Stephen Vote.
That's why again those who criticized him for pulling Tanner
Biby when he did the other day. Again, that certainly
(43:41):
wasn't at the forefront of his mind, but I think
somewhere down in the recesses of that you had to
have it in to back your mind. Well, even if
we don't win this and we can still bring him
back if it gets to that point. Today can be
another one of those that that baseball term Johnny Hoole staff,
if you find yourself in serious situations, you're gonna go
to that bullpen and do whatever you can to salvage
(44:03):
your season right now. So I think that's what we'll say.
It wasn't a probably. I think the Guardians wouldn't probably
see him win this one this afternoon. I just I
like that baseball team for a lot of reasons, and
to me, Stephen votes at the top of that list.
I'm just the way he's managed that team all season long.
For a guy who's never been a big league manager before,
(44:24):
I mean, that's pretty dark good the job he's done.
Yankees and Guardians again. Five o eight is the first
pitch Tonight in New York. The Mets will play host
to the Dodgers, with the Dodgers up two games to one. Again.
The Dodgers are rolling the Mets eight nothing in game
number three and can take And you have to say
(44:45):
when somebody goes up three games to one. It's an
FCC regulation. It's in the broadcasters handbook. You have to
say commanding. When you say three games. You can't mention
that three games the one lead without saying a commanding
three games to one lead. You have to say it
that way. And that's what the Dodgers will have themselves
if they win in this game at eight o' eight
(45:07):
tonight in New York, they'll have that commanding three games
to one lead and they can end the series tomorrow.
The series, by the way, flip start times tomorrow. Dodgers
and Mets will go at five o eight. Guardian Yankees
will go in eight o eight tomorrow night. So for
your planning purposes as far as baseball viewing is concerned.
That's where that stands. And of course it'll be another
(45:28):
night where there's a lot of college football. Northeast Ohio
is big on high school football. There's gonna be a
baseball game tomorrow night, and it's gonna be a pretty
darn big one as well too, if the Guardians can
win this one tonight against the New York Yankees. And
there's just something neat about baseball postseason in the afternoon,
even though it's five o eight, it's still it just
(45:50):
it takes you back to the days when the World
Series was mainly in the afternoons, or all the playoff
games were in the afternoons. It's just there's just something
neat about it. And again they'll throw it to the
first pitch at the five oho eighth this afternoon. Blue
Jackets are home tonight as Columbus will take on Buffalo
out of the gate at one and two. The CBJ
(46:10):
and have Buffalo in tonight. The Sabers are one, three
and one. We have a couple of fan polls up
for you this afternoon, and those will stay open for
another forty five minutes or so. We're asking you in
one there are four six and oh teams in the
top six of the AP and Coaches College Football Top
twenty five polls. Which team is the next one to
lose a game? Is it? Texas, Oregon, Penn State, Miami,
(46:32):
and Florida? And right now Penn State getting almost forty
two percent of the vote, followed by Texas and Miami
of Florida. And we're also asking you today, if you're
Brown's general manager Andrew Barry, do you make any more
deals prior to the NFL trade deadline, which is November
the fifth. Yes, let's do it and get draft picks. No,
keep the corp together or deal anyone but Nick Chubb
(46:52):
and Miles Garrett and right now, yes, let's get draft picks.
Getting sixty six percent of the vote. There next hour,
Kelly and I will have our Magnificent seven. We will
run down our top seven teams in the National Football League.
I'll tell you why mine's right and hers is wrong,
so you can have that to get you ready for
NFL act tonight.
Speaker 3 (47:11):
So you're gonna lie to the people, Marty, is that
what you're saying. You're gonna lie to the people, Because
if you're saying that I'm wrong, then that would be
a falsehood.
Speaker 2 (47:21):
It's an exaggeration.
Speaker 4 (47:22):
Yeah, uh uh uh.
Speaker 3 (47:25):
I'll give you the right list of top of the
top seven teams in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (47:29):
Right now, stick around for that.
Speaker 2 (47:34):
Four thirty five will be the time when we do that.
Next hour, after we talk to our friend Anthony Cosenza.
All right, top of the hour, coming up, we'll get
an update from Fox Sports. On the other side, Well,
Urban Myers had some interesting comments, so always good to
hear from him and about college football, so we'll give
(47:55):
you some of those when we come back. It's the
press Box, Fox Sports nine eighty WI.
Speaker 1 (48:33):
Welcome to the press Box with Marty Banister, the latest
on all local sports from Wright State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine three seven by three one
six y one seven zero the press Box on Fox
Sports nine eighty WNE.
Speaker 7 (48:55):
You know, obviously we would have loved to have taken
one in New York, but we still feel really good
about our chances.
Speaker 2 (49:02):
That's Stephen Vote, manager of the Cleveland Guardians, as they
get ready for the Yankees in about an hour. Welcome
back to the press box Fox Sports nine eight W
and Am Marty Banners. A good ahead was here on
this Thursday afternoon. Still to come this hour, Anthony Coscenzo
will visit with us. We'll talk about the Bengals from
the aspect of that side of the rivalry game with
the Browns coming up on Sunday. We also have a
(49:23):
Magnificent seven coming up a little bit later on for
you as well too, so we have a lot to
get into there, all right. Urban Meyer has made some
comments on his podcast about winning big games when the
talent is equal. Now he has a podcast. I think
everybody has a podcast.
Speaker 4 (49:42):
Yeah, it is one hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (49:44):
I almost think that we should not be allowed to
talk about podcasts ever again.
Speaker 2 (49:49):
Yeah, I think his is called triple option. I think,
which is an offense he would never run. But nonetheless,
go on, uh, he talks about winning big games when
the town's equal. He said, quote, there's no negotiations. It's
all about the trenches. You have to dominate upfront. When
(50:10):
his teams won national championships, his offensive line and defensive
line would quote rip your throat out. Okay, let's let's
take a look let's take a look back at that.
I can only go on the ones I saw at
Ohio State, although I did see his team in six
the one that demolished Ohio State in the night of
(50:31):
the BCS Championship game out in Arizona. That team, yeah,
it had that that that Florida team.
Speaker 3 (50:37):
Is every position was that though those guys were scary.
I remember think they looked scary.
Speaker 2 (50:45):
Oh yeah. The one thing And as I said before,
I have no love for this guy. I mean he's
he's he's impossible to deal with and just a very
difficult guy to work to work with, which made a
lot of our lives a miserable mining. But I will
say this that year, you give him six weeks to
prepare for a team, he's gonna find every single thing
(51:10):
that he can exploit. And that's what he did to
Ohio State that year. I mean he picked them apart
like a Thanksgiving turkey at the bone. I mean, you
just everything he found wrong, he exploited it, He had it,
he had answers for it. So from that standpoint, you
can't argue with that. Sure, there's no argument about that
at all. And when you look at some of the
other big games that they played when he had significant
(51:34):
time to get his team ready, more often than not,
they would shred you. I mean they would just the
way that he was able to motivate and push the
right buttons and exploit all of your weaknesses. But let's
keep in mind as well too, he also had the
ability to lose forty nine to twenty to unrank Purdue.
(51:57):
He also had the ability to lose fifty five twenty
four to unranked Iowa. Now I don't know how you
explain those, but those were also part of the resume
as well too, So I think when you start thinking
about comments like that that he makes, you have to
(52:17):
kind of remember as well too. The seven to zero
record against Michigan buys him a lot of credibility, buys
him a lot of I guess credibility is the word
with Ohio State fans as well. It should. I'm not
I'm arguing that point at all, but I also think
you have to remember too you look at Ryan Day.
The Michigan teams that have beaten Ohio State since Ryan
(52:40):
Day has been the head coach are significantly better. And
the Michigan teams that Urban Meyer he was coaching at State,
So I think that gets overlooked. That's where this recency
bias thing comes into it when you start thinking about
Ryan Day can't win a big game, Ryan Day can't
beat Michigan. And those are all fair comments, and there's
(53:02):
all fair discussions to have when you think about this.
But at the same time, I was looking back the
twenty twelve team Urban Meyers first year at Ohio State,
which beat Michigan. I think I didn't pull up Michigan's
record that year, but I'm almost certain. I mean that
was here. Ohio State was eleven no going into the game.
(53:23):
They were serving their Bowl ban for the transgressions from
the Jim Tressel era. It was a good Michigan team,
but it wasn't the caliber that Jim Harbaugh had going
into those games. Did you call it their record that year,
Kelly Michigan twenty twelve, I know Ohio State was eleven
(53:45):
no going. I mean Ohio State won it, but that
that team, I'll guarantee it wasn't what the twenty twenty
two team was that beat Ohio State.
Speaker 4 (53:53):
They were eighty five.
Speaker 2 (53:54):
Okay, the twenty twenty one team that beat Ohio State
or the team last year. I mean the team last
year that Michigan had obviously won the National Championship, and
you can go back and say, well they cheated and
all those other things.
Speaker 4 (54:04):
Okay, fun, I mean half their teams in the NFL
right now, So.
Speaker 8 (54:08):
I say, but from a talent standpoint, they were better. Yeah,
they were just better, That's what I'm saying. Yeah, their
whole teams. They had to retool this season exactly.
Speaker 2 (54:18):
You look at the twenty thirteen season that Ohio State
that was a shootout something like forty five thirty eight
that Ohio State won. Again, I think Michigan was in
the top five at that time. So I mean, obviously
it was a very good Michigan football team, but it
(54:38):
wasn't Again, it wasn't what those other teams were. So
I think people tend to forget a little bit just
how good Ohio State was and better than the Michigan
teams that Urban beat. Now, the twenty fifteen team obviously
was so much better than Michigan, that's not that's not
(54:59):
in in question. The twenty sixteen team that was the game,
the fourth down play, the overtime game where Ohio State
had to convert that fourth down in overtime and just
barely did so, or Michigan would have won that game.
But the twenty seventeen to twenty eighteen games in Ohio State,
better team won the games. So I think that's what
(55:20):
you kind of have sometimes have to think a little
bit longer than just say, well, Ryan Day can't win
these big games. He's he can't win a big game. Well,
take some time and look at it and break it
down a little bit. Because for every big game loss
that Ryan Day supposedly has, Urbans got fifty five to
(55:44):
twenty four Iowa forty nine to twenty per due Virginia
Tech in the National championship season, there's no way Virginia
Tech should be to Ohio State that night. They weren't
any were near as good as that Ohio State team,
but they did. They did it in Columbus. So let's well,
I think you have to just sit back sometimes and
really analyze things. And again I understand what he's saying
(56:07):
about winning in the trenches, that there's a lot to that,
and those teams his team's at wone champion, the championship
team Ohio State in twenty fourteen. Absolutely, those guys on
that on that offensive line, that defensive line, they were monsters.
They were. I mean, they were just as he said,
they'd rip your throat out and they were that good.
And not that Ryan Day doesn't have that right now
(56:29):
with it with this football team, but I mean he
kind of doesn't.
Speaker 3 (56:32):
I actually, I mean I think that the skill posit
skill players are much better for Ryan Day than they
were for Urban Meyer. But Urban Meyer's offensive and defensive
lines were I think are better than Ryan Day's.
Speaker 4 (56:50):
I'm not seeing it.
Speaker 3 (56:51):
I Ohio State's offensive line is is good. I'm not
saying they're they're bums. I'm not saying any here's a scrub.
I'm just saying that they do not put the fear
in other teams the same way that I feel like
Urban Myers O line and D line did.
Speaker 2 (57:12):
Yeah, the skill thing is that that's an interesting point
because I don't think you can argue the wide receiver position. Yeah,
the talent's better there. I mean, there were some very
good wide receivers on those Urban Meyer teams, receivers on
those Urban Myer teams, but there wasn't a Marvin Harrison junior.
There wasn't a Jeremiah Smith. There wasn't a Mecca Abuka
(57:33):
on those teams. But they had good whiteouts again.
Speaker 4 (57:36):
Yeah, yeah, really good, really good players. Yeah, but these guys.
Speaker 2 (57:39):
Aren't there, weren't any of these guys.
Speaker 4 (57:41):
Those guys are elite.
Speaker 2 (57:42):
Yeah, no, No, they had better running backs. You had
Ezekiel Elliot, you had JK. Dobbins. Yeah. I think that
that point of it, you could take quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (57:55):
Quarterbacks is interesting actually, I mean.
Speaker 2 (57:58):
Because Ryan Day, Ryan Day had C. J. Stroud, Urban
had Dwayne Haskins A yeah, yep. I mean then some
of the other Urban's other quarterback Barrett, yeah, Braxton Miller,
J T. Barrett m hm and and uh oh the
(58:24):
the twelve shot, the quarterback who came in his name
is ran away from me, got up the national championship
when he when when J. T. Barrett went down? Yeah yeah, yeah,
why why did that? Why did that just escape me?
But but you know what I'm saying, I think in
that regard Ohio State, Ryan Days, Cardial Jones, Yeah, Cardial Jones.
(58:47):
Uh seeah, I guess you get old, don't don't let
it happen to you. I think that, uh, from a
standpoint of and you can maybe even go offense defense
as well, to just kind of break these two teams down,
of the two regimes down in that regard as well too.
But I think say question that the current group and
the g and the skilled people that Ryan Day has had,
(59:09):
certain with the white out spots, it's not close, yeah much.
Speaker 3 (59:13):
But I actually I think the defense, the defense was
better under.
Speaker 4 (59:19):
Urban Meyer.
Speaker 3 (59:21):
I mean this honestly, And that's part of the issue
with Ohio State right now is that their defense is
not making critical stops they are. I mean, here's my
thing about a defense. I'm okay with a bend, but
we don't break sort of mentality like you could get
forty yards, but you're not gonna score, you know what
I mean. You're you could get really close to the
(59:42):
goal line all you want, but you're gonna kick a
field goal at the end. And that that is the
energy right now. Urban Meyer was like, you're not scoring
points in this game. It's cute that you think you are.
It's fun that you guys showed up here and you
thought you were gonna do that. But Ryan Day's mentality,
(01:00:02):
I think around defense is just a little bit different
than Urban Myers.
Speaker 4 (01:00:05):
And that's what we're seeing.
Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
There is no There is no question that I think
there was a little more of an edge from when
Urban Meyer. I mean I saw it there. There was
a little bit more of a of a US against
and I always hate that US against the world mentality stuff.
I just I despise that. But I think there was
a lot of that that was ingrained. That there was
(01:00:32):
we don't like you. We don't care if you don't
like us because we don't like you. Yeah, exactly, And
then there's something to be said for that. There is,
and they played with that a lot when they went
on the field. I've said it before. If Urban had
you down forty five nothing at half, he wanted you
down sixty five nothing at the end of the third quarter.
Under Jim Traussel, he had you down forty five nothing
(01:00:53):
at the half. He's probably fine to that. That's it,
game over. We're just gonna go out and run the
ball in the second half, and that's it. Urban couldn't care.
He just didn't care. He was gonna score as many
points as he could and roll along with it. And
that's the way he wanted it to be. And that's
the mentality he brought that that Jim Trussell's teams didn't
have yeah, for an example, so and and Ryan Day's teams.
(01:01:18):
I mean, I'm not saying they're not they're not ingrained
with that either. But I don't know that there's that.
Speaker 4 (01:01:26):
There isn't.
Speaker 2 (01:01:27):
I mean there, I don't know what. I don't think
there is. I don't want the phrases. I don't know
if it's a punch you in the mouth or you
can't get back up or whatever it is. And what's
that Mike Tyson line. Everybody has a plan that you
get punched in a face.
Speaker 3 (01:01:40):
Yeah, But I feel like Ryan Days, Ryan Days, Buck
guys will let you breathe a little. Urban Meyer was
not letting you breathe once.
Speaker 2 (01:01:50):
You suffocate, Yeah, suffocate and he's.
Speaker 3 (01:01:53):
Gonna He's like, Okay, we've won the game. We will
run the ball if we score a touchdown.
Speaker 4 (01:01:57):
Cool awesome.
Speaker 3 (01:01:58):
But but urban Meyer was like, I don't care if
it's one hundred and two to zero, if we if
it's first intend you get the first down. And that's
just what it was. So that's different, those different mindsets though.
Speaker 2 (01:02:12):
I mean, that's yeah, and let's be honest, that's why
he I think that's why he burned out too, because
of that constant drive. I mean every program he was at,
he tried to instill that they certainly had it at
Florida to win completely off the rails down there. I'm
sure they had it at Utah when he was there,
and heck they probably had it at BG when he
was there for the short time he was there.
Speaker 4 (01:02:33):
So sounds tiring, Oh yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:02:36):
Yeah it is. Believe me, it's exhausting for all involved.
All Right, four sixteen is the time we'll come back
and talk a little NFL when Anthony Cosentive visits with
us to talk about the Bengal side of things. Heading
to Cleveland on Sunday, It's the press box Fox Sports
nine eighty W and.
Speaker 1 (01:02:50):
A get on the press box called Marty Now at
(01:03:13):
nine to three seven by three one six, one seven
zero the press box on Fox Sports ninet eighty WN.
Speaker 2 (01:03:22):
Hey, I'm back with you on this Thursday afternoon. Sunshine
comfortable right now, it's going to warm into the sixties
after what we've had the last few days. It's rather
enjoyable right now as we get ready for a big
weekend of college football NFL on Sunday, Baseball this afternoon.
All right, let's talk a little NFL right now. Our
number one, we had Damon Wolf visit with us from
Dogs by Nature. Let's get the way things are looking
(01:03:44):
from the Cincinnati end of it with our friend Anthony Cosenza,
who visits with us from at Sincy Jungle and that
Orange Black illustrated. Always good to have Anthony join us
here on the program and talk a little NFL. Are
you as nervous as I am going into Sunday? I've
been a wreck this week for a game between the
two and fourteen on a one on five football team.
I don't know how to feel about.
Speaker 6 (01:04:05):
I don't really know how to feel about it either,
you know, I mean you feel you feel kind of
good if you're a Bengals fan, you feel kind of
good that the defense answered the bell last week after
having a player's only meeting. Uh kind of you know,
gra grab everyone by the collar of the shirt, so
to speak, and you know, wake them up and shake
the cobwebs off. That side of the ball has also
(01:04:27):
gotten healthier, particularly in spots that have plagued them. Uh Still,
you know, Marty, I mean there's this phrase. I'm sure
you've heard it. A ton complimentary football. The Bengals have,
oddly enough to probably the best example of complimentary football,
which is each of the three units kind of feeding
off of each other, complete, complete game type of thing.
(01:04:47):
The biggest example of that was actually a loss to
Kansas City. It feels like this year and every other
game it's been either offense offense, offense, offense, or a
couple of games the Patriots and last week where it's
been defense defense. So you know, you keep waiting for
this Bengals team to put a complete game together and
do that on a at least a somewhat regular basis.
(01:05:08):
So aside from kind of being confused, and you know, yeah,
I guess nervous is a relatable feeling. I guess it's
more just frustrated, like when's this thing going to actually click?
Because there's a lot of talent on that roster and
two and four is just pretty unacceptable at this point.
Speaker 2 (01:05:22):
Okay, that's a good point, and I'm glad you brought
that up because I think there have been some Anthony
who have thought, well, maybe there's not as much as
we thought from a talent standpoint. I know, the defensive
backfield can still be termed an issue, but maybe maybe
not an enormous issue. I think it's kind of obviously
Von Bell isn't the Von Bell of the twenty twenty
(01:05:43):
three or the twenty twenty two to twenty twenty one
of lom Bell. I think he's lost a step. I
think that much is kind of obvious right now. But
he still brings a lot of leadership back there. So
is this team as talented as everybody thought it was.
Speaker 6 (01:05:56):
I think yes and no. I think you know, there's
been some roster are overturning, you know, the last couple
of offseasons, so that has hurt them. I think, you know,
the Bell acquisition or reacquisition was in part, yeah, the
safety position was a mess last year, but in part,
you know, let's get somebody who grasps the concepts well,
(01:06:16):
can potentially put guys in, you know, the right places
in front of them, that sort of thing. But as
you can see, Marty, it's just not the same Bell
alone is not the same as Bell and Jesse Bates
back there. And so you can try and bring back
some of these guys and you know, that sort of thing.
But the bottom line is it's two he's two years older.
(01:06:37):
You know, he has been one of many players that
have had some issues on tape. On defense. You know,
they still have yet to figure out that that role
that Trey Flowers played so well a couple of years ago,
that basically that slot guy that is just kind of
you know, guarding the big receivers and or tight end,
and Trey Flowers did that pretty well. And their their
(01:06:58):
playoff run there, They've experimented with a couple of rookies
and Dijon Anthony and Josh Newton in that role to
mixed results. And you know, you're starting to finally see
a few more snaps from Jordan Battle in the safety position,
and when he's out there, things kind of seemed to
steady a little bit more. Again, I do look back
to this last week. Granted it was against the Giants
(01:07:21):
and no elite neighbors there, but I do look back
and I was encouraged with the production across the defensive
line that is finally seemingly getting healthy, particularly on the interior.
Rookie McKinley Jackson flashed bj Hill had a whale of
a game against his former team. Sam Hubbard got in
there on some plays, and of course Trey Henderson is
Trey Hendrickson. So you know, I mean, I think if
(01:07:41):
you kind of start dialing in some things up there.
They still need to get someone off the edge to
bring rotational rotational pass rush help. They haven't figured that
out yet, but if they can figure that out, I
think things will kind of steady on the back end.
You saw DJ Turner, who's in starting at quarterback over
Dax Hill who's out with a knee injury.
Speaker 2 (01:08:00):
Now.
Speaker 6 (01:08:01):
He made arguably the play defensive play of the game
late in the game, knocking away that pass on fourth down. So,
I don't know, a lot of new faces, a lot
of young guys, and we talked about this before when
I was on before the season. A lot of young
guys got to grow up fast.
Speaker 2 (01:08:14):
Absolutely. Anthony Cosenza visiting with us right now at since
the Jungle at Bengals Orange and Black Illustrated does a
great job covering the Bengals, and we always appreciate his
time joining us here on the program. You brought up
the Giants game and I kind of wanted to you
kind of took me where you kind of went where
I was going to go with you on that. What
were we Is it easy to be fooled by what
(01:08:35):
we saw on Sunday night? Because the Giants were obviously,
as you said, without elite neighbors, And let's just face it,
that's a bad football team, the New York Giants, and
they kind of had to hang on to win it,
but they did win it. I mean, some of the
things that happened in the game have gone against them
in the past. Maybe that's a positive right now, but
is it should we be cautious about feeling too good
(01:08:56):
about Sunday night?
Speaker 5 (01:08:59):
Well?
Speaker 6 (01:09:00):
I like the word that you use, the word fooled,
because it's like, you know, is this is this the
game that turns the season the way that everybody wants
it to go for the Bengals? Was this the turning point?
Or was that just fools goal?
Speaker 7 (01:09:12):
No?
Speaker 6 (01:09:12):
Molik neighbors, Daniel Jones playing and football and like you said,
you know, I mean the Giants defensive front was outstanding,
But the rest of the team, I don't know. But
you can look at it in two ways, right just
the way I kind of said it where not a
great football team. You know, you only won by ten
points and that's because they missed you know what, It
was the two field goals and they couldn't get in
(01:09:35):
the end zone. Their their star offensive player wasn't on
the field, et cetera. And then you know, like I said,
you still have these errors and critical moments, the you know,
the lack of putting together a complete game type of thing,
and you go, wow, maybe things aren't as good as
we hope they are. Even after the win. On the
flip side, you look at it and you go, well,
imperfect game. You had to have it to continue to
(01:09:55):
save your season. Defensive past rush was outstanding from the
Giants that game, and you know it, it took kind
of a gutsy win and that's that's what they came
out of there with. And you know the Bengals also,
they had a couple of bad calls against them and
that you know, there's the holding call of the goal
line against Cordello Bolson, where you go, what was that?
(01:10:18):
A couple you know, another horse collar tackle against Eric
All that was you know, they swallowed the flag on
that one. I think it was the same drive actually,
So I mean there's a couple of plays there where
you go, Okay, this could have been different, but it
also could have been different for the Giants too, a
couple more scores, et cetera. I don't know, you know,
it's kind of a as cliche as it is for me.
It's like, well, I guess you just got to wait
to the next week. You gotta wait to the next week.
(01:10:38):
You gotta wait to the next week.
Speaker 5 (01:10:40):
You know.
Speaker 6 (01:10:40):
If this is my partner, my co host called this,
you know, a couple of weeks ago, starting with the
with the Giants game, here must win months and that
must win week or must you know, must win game.
It's must win months. And the Bengals got to get
close to or even over five five hundred by the
time they get to the rematch with Baltimore coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:10:57):
Well, and that's the thing about this stretch because if
they somehow managed to go up there and win on Sunday,
then your home for Philadelphia and you don't know what
you're going to get out of the Eagles. Then you've
got a Raiders team that's coming in. You don't know
what they are right now. So that dare I say it,
that possibility is there to be five and four going
to that Thursday night game in Baltimore. Again, we all
(01:11:20):
know how these things work. And the way this season
has gone. Right now, the offense on Sunday was that
discouraging after what they had done or was it okay?
They've been so good for most of the season you
can kind of excuse a bump in the road like
Sunday night. And as you mentioned that Giants defensive front
was very good on Sunday night.
Speaker 6 (01:11:41):
Yeah, it's kind of you know, the myriad of emotions
and reactions from their performance is kind of all over
the map for me. Right again, it's kind of like, well,
you know, you made third and eighteen, Borough runs for
close to fifty yards for a touchdown, right third and
twelve at the end of the game. They did make
that clutch play to Yosi by on the sideline, great
throw by Burrow, great toe tap, and then you know
(01:12:03):
that essentially Ice is the game. But a play later
after that Yoshi catch, Chase Brown almost fumbles the ball
away to the Giant, and who knows what would have
happened if that didn't squirt into the out of bounce there.
Speaking of the running game, you had another fumble from
Zack Moss coming right after a turnover that the defense forced,
and the ground game itself is inconsistent. Chase Brown is
(01:12:26):
getting yard, Zach Moss is not, so you know, you
kind of go, well, I mean, there's just so much
of a mixed bag. You also had a big play
to Jamar Chase I can't remember if it was on
a second or a third down, just went right through
his hands. That I mean that definitely would have been
a first down, if not maybe even a touchdown at
that he was kicking himself on that drop, which is uncharacteristic.
(01:12:47):
So I mean there's just now the myriad of reactions
and emotions just have to be all over the map.
And the only thing that I think, you know, Bengals
fans and those who have covered the team for you
know this stretch right here, this Burrow Zach Taylor era,
is that you know, right around now is when that
(01:13:10):
foot gets kind of pressed down on the gas pedal,
and this is when they kind of start turning things
on playing some of their best football. And so you
have to kind of hope that that's the case here
in coming in October November, that the Bengals are going
to be playing their best football going forward. And you
know these things that put together all three phases get
(01:13:32):
to this complimentary football, and you know a team that's
going to be dangerous in the winter time.
Speaker 2 (01:13:36):
Remaining moments with Anthony Cosenza at Sinsey Jungle and at
Bengals Wrange and Black illustrated visiting with us here. Remaining
moments as we talk Bengals Browns coming up on Sunday.
For whatever reason, the Browns have been a nightmare for
Joe Burrow and for the Bengals. They're two and eight
in the last ten games. Include I'm not telling anything
you don't know about this. Is there one thing that
stands out? I know Burrow hasn't played in a couple
(01:13:58):
of the games, so maybe he's the same. Two and
eight isn't fair, But nonetheless, there hasn't been a lot
of success. Is there anything it stands out though? In
these games as to why Cleveland has been able to
kind of just if dominates the word dominate Cincinnati.
Speaker 6 (01:14:10):
Well, it's two words. And he makes his return this Sunday,
and that's Nick Chubb, and Nick Chubb has just been
a Bengals killer. Now. Who knows how heavy the workload is,
how ready he will be coming off of a major
injury last year. This Browns team Deshaun Watson. Everybody is
just different when they get Nick Chubb back and he
(01:14:33):
is going and then they're able to properly utilize play
action and hit hit things down the field. Now again,
I don't I don't really under you know, where we're
We're kind of banging on the Bengals here, and rightfully
so too and four At this point, I don't know
what to make of what's going on in Cleveland. I mean,
you kind of had a little bit of a fire
sale moment with the Amari Cooper trade. They're one in five,
(01:14:56):
Deshaun Watson isn't playing well. Is this their Giant It's
game as it was for the Bengals. Is this their
game to kind of say, this is kind of do
or die. We got to get We're getting Nick Chubb back,
we got to get this thing back on track. But
for me, it's a complete mismatch in the trenches on
both sides of the ball. That's what's with earmark this.
(01:15:17):
Nick Chubb has been outstanding throughout this series in his
career against the Bengals, So the Bengals offensive line, save
for last week against the Giants, has played vastly improved football,
particularly in pass protection this first part of the season,
and so you know, I'm very curious to see how
they fare against Miles Garrett. This is precisely why you
(01:15:39):
brought in Trent Brown, who's now on IR why you
drafted Amarus Mams, who's now in the lineup for Trent Brown,
against premier guys like Miles Garrett TJ. Watt that you
face multiple times a year. So I'm very curious to
see how that works out, as well as how the
finally healthy defensive front of the Cincinnati Bengals can go
up against Nick Chubb, who's making his return. First game back,
(01:16:01):
We'll see, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:16:03):
So as we close it up two and four right
now with a win, obviously, I think everybody starts to
really start to agree with what you said a moment ago,
that this team is doing what it normally does about
this time of year. It's starting to find its gear.
If it loses and drops to two and five, is
it fair to say that it's time to think, well,
(01:16:23):
let's just play this one out. I mean, obviously that
will be the public mindset, but I think that's kind
of where it will be at two and five because
you're not coming back don't think you're coming back from
two and five three and four, your chances are obviously better.
Is that kind of the way this game, the outcome
of this game kind of defines where the rest of
the season goes for Cincinnati.
Speaker 6 (01:16:41):
I think so. I think so because as it sits
right now, I mean, you're looking at probably no more
than three or four more losses the rest of the
year to get into the playoffs. And then if you're
talking about a loss to the Browns, that would be
winless in the conference AFC conference this year, and then
winless in the division at zero and to two. So
I think it's what what would that being four in
(01:17:03):
the overall in the AFC and O and two in
the in the division there? And so that is a
really really tough hole to climb out of. You know,
I don't know that the Bengals are talking about that
that much publicly, but you know, I'm sure that's on
their mind in terms of this is one of those
got to have it type of deals.
Speaker 2 (01:17:20):
And Joe Burrow even kind of hitted at that earlier
today when he talked to the media, admitting it has
been a struggle against as he put it, this team
from our division. He didn't call them by name, he
just said this team from our division. So that's the
I guess the way you kind of got to look
at this right now. All right, Well we'll all find
out one o'clock Sunday, Anthic, I said, it's always a pleasure,
my friend. Thank you for spending some time with us.
(01:17:40):
I enjoy the work that you do. You do a
great job covering the Bengals, and I look forward to
talking to you hopefully down the road when maybe we
can talk about a fight for the playoffs. So appreciate
you timely.
Speaker 6 (01:17:50):
Appreciate you having me on again.
Speaker 2 (01:17:51):
Yeah, thank you, absolutely all right, Anthonic sens of visiting
with us at since he jungle and that orange and
black illustrated. Yeah, yeah, that he hit right on the head.
That's what this season is about. You lose this one
on Sunday and that's pretty much it. Two and five.
You're not digging out of that hole.
Speaker 3 (01:18:08):
No trade T Higgins to the commanders. If that happens,
I'm just saying, sorry, got it. I got ahead of myself.
Speaker 2 (01:18:16):
I just saying, yeah, way ahead of your all right,
we come back week number three of the Magnificent Seven
stay with us. It's the press box, Fox Sports nine
eighty w O.
Speaker 1 (01:18:51):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three seven buy three, one, six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WNI and.
Speaker 2 (01:19:04):
Back with you as we continue along here on this Thursday.
It's the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty w AM
Marty Bencher, Kelly Be's the producer of the program. And
you have us for about another twenty minutes or so
here in the press box on this Thursday, Guardians and
Yankees in about twenty minutes. First pitch coming up in
the American League Championship Series. Rather a surprising news just
(01:19:25):
breaking coming out of the world of college basketball. Virginia
coach Tony Bennett is is going to announce his immediate
retirement tomorrow at a press conference, yes, at eleven o'clock
tomorrow morning. So he's had a great deal of success,
guy to Virginia to the Final four, and is going
to call it as going to retire effective immediately at
(01:19:47):
a press conference tomorrow at eleven o'clock. So yeah, one
of the more successful coaches in all of college basketball
will announce his retirement tomorrow. Tony Bennett the head coach
at the University of Virginia. Keep an eye on that
for you tomorrow as well too. All right, time once
again it is that part of the week where Kelly
is wrong. I am right about our top seven. As
(01:20:09):
we bring you again week number three of the Magnificent seven.
Well did you did you hit the music?
Speaker 4 (01:20:16):
I was just I was very eager.
Speaker 2 (01:20:21):
I was jump in the music for we can't do
without the music, and we love the music.
Speaker 3 (01:20:27):
You're right, you're right, You're right.
Speaker 2 (01:20:29):
Yeah, so we have to have the music first. Can
you find the music?
Speaker 3 (01:20:33):
It's it's it wasn't a folder here. That's so, that's good,
that's good. Should should should you hummet?
Speaker 2 (01:20:39):
Maybe no? You don't want me doing that?
Speaker 3 (01:20:42):
No?
Speaker 4 (01:20:42):
No, probably not probably not here.
Speaker 3 (01:20:44):
Why don't you talk a little bit more?
Speaker 2 (01:20:45):
And nothing? Why you find it? Okay? See we we
we work on this show for hours to get it
ready for you, so you can be a part of
what we do here.
Speaker 4 (01:20:59):
It is got to be better at naming naming your folders.
Speaker 2 (01:21:03):
That'll okay. So it's all on me, huh okay, and
that will solve a lot of my issues. Okay. I'll
try and be better for you. That's the whole key.
All right, all right, where to go?
Speaker 3 (01:21:17):
I have no idea. Actually the media players just closed
it did.
Speaker 2 (01:21:20):
Not like any of that. Oh goodness, all right, all right,
all right, right, well we we don't necessarily have to
have the music, so uh, but well we wanted to
be a part of the program. But anyway, Magnificent seven
what we do each other week during the NFL seasons, Kelly,
then I pick our top seven teams in descending order
from seven to one, and we let you know who
we think are the top seven teams. We we just
(01:21:41):
do it because each league goes with seven teams per
conference of the playoffs. We just thought we would just
pick the top seven overall in the National Football League.
So we let Kelly give you her seven wrong picks
that I'll pick the seven correct ones.
Speaker 4 (01:21:57):
Here's the music again, Yeah, just reopening a good time here.
Speaker 2 (01:22:04):
Just start pushing buttons and see what happens. You can't tell?
All right, Gilly, you're up first, your Magnificent seven for
this week in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:22:12):
All right, number seven, And uh, this is because I'm
a homer, because you know, it maybe could be the
Packers here, but it's it's the Commanders.
Speaker 4 (01:22:20):
The Washington Commanders.
Speaker 3 (01:22:21):
Still in the top seven only because they went up
against a more highly ranked team that I have here
and they didn't poop the bed. For lack of a
better term, but yeah, they uh, they had a pretty
impressive showing against a much better team in the Baltimore Ravens.
(01:22:43):
So still Jaden Daniels world, he's a rookie of the
rookie of the month or week rather five out of
the six weeks he's winning.
Speaker 4 (01:22:53):
Number six. The Bills.
Speaker 3 (01:22:55):
The Bills showed up when they needed to and now
that they have Amari Cooper. And maybe this is unfair
because part of my list I moved around based on
some of the injuries that happened. But the Bills with
Amari Cooper, I think I think that's exactly what they need.
They need a veteran wide receiver presence. But they still
(01:23:16):
were able to outlast the Jets that finally started looking
like a real football team last week after getting rid
of rid of Robert Sala who knew, right. The Texans
at number five, they're still good. They're still doing what
needs to be done. I think they beat the Panthers
last week, so it's almost it's kind of unfair because
(01:23:37):
everybody has been showing out against the Panthers, but it
makes you look really good. I'm sorry, I don't know
what to tell you.
Speaker 2 (01:23:45):
Number four.
Speaker 4 (01:23:47):
The Detroit Lions.
Speaker 3 (01:23:49):
Thank you to everyone in Detroit for putting the whoop
in on those Dallas Cowboys. That was so beautiful to watch.
I've rewatched game three times. It's so much fun. At
number three, the Baltimore Ravens have finally shown up. They
(01:24:13):
really made a statement. Their defense looked great, and Derrick Henry,
when all is said and done, Derrick Henry I think
will be the reason that the Ravens are who they
are this season. Getting the ball out of Lamar's hands
in the fourth quarter when you just need to run
(01:24:33):
the ball. You've got to lead, you just need to
run the ball. Derrick Henry makes this team almost almost
unbeatable at this point. Number two the Vikings. They're winning
and they don't look like they're gonna stop winning anytime soon.
They're not even like they look good. They don't look great,
but they just do whatever needs to be done to win.
(01:24:56):
More to the point, Number one, the Kansas City Chiefs.
Until someone wants to dethron them. That's right, they're the
Kansas City Chiefs, and so all right, they get it. There,
you get it.
Speaker 2 (01:25:08):
So Washington, Buffalo, Houston, Detroit, Baltimore, Minnesota, Kansas City. All right, okay,
here we go with the correct. Here's the one that's right.
Number seven the Green Bay Packers. I am continually impressed
with Jordan Love. I'm a I think quarterback is the
most important position in the National Football League, and he
(01:25:31):
is getting better and better and better. And I think
the Packers are getting better and better and better each week.
And I install them at number seven in the correct
magnificent seven. Number six the Washington Commanders. Again, quarterback, quarterback, quarterback.
And I was impressed with the way they battled the
Baltimore Ravens because that I think a lot of people thought,
(01:25:52):
but now we're really going to find out what the
Commanders are made of. Well, they went toe to toe
with one of the best teams of the National Football League,
and I can't away very impressed with the Washington Commanders.
Number five is the Detroit Lions. And the only reason
I have them at five is the eight and hutcheson
injury man, because I think and they went in Dallas.
(01:26:13):
When you look at teams that fall into that we're
a mess right now, they're in that at one of
the top three on that list. The Browns are on
that list, The Raiders are probably on that list.
Speaker 4 (01:26:25):
Panthers probably owned that list.
Speaker 2 (01:26:26):
Yeah yeah, but the the Cowboys are on that list.
And Detroit took advantage of a very bad football team,
which is good, that's what you're supposed to do. But
the hutches an injury. I think this might be a
little hard for them to bounce back from right now.
And that's that's emotion anything more than anything. Right out.
Number four, I have the Houston Texans, and the simple
(01:26:49):
fact that they got spanked by Minnesota is the only
reason why I have them at four and Minnesota at three,
because I would have flipped them had it gone the
other way around. Minnesota's unbeaten at five at five and
six and oh yeah, they aren't beaten one of the
two along with Kansas City, so that that's the only difference,
is that Minnesota rold Houston or else I'd have Houston
(01:27:11):
ahead of him. Number two, I have the Baltimore Ravens.
Speaker 7 (01:27:13):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:27:13):
You talk about getting better and better each week. They're
getting to the point out where they're almost scary. Good. Yeah,
and that's frightening for the rest of us in the
AFC North. I just every week, every week, Uh, Derrick Henry,
a lot of people thought, oh, he's done, he's got
nothing left. Well he's proven everybody wrong. Lamar Jackson now, now,
Lamar Jackson still has games where he does things where
(01:27:36):
you go, huh.
Speaker 4 (01:27:37):
Some boneheaded moves, what what is he doing?
Speaker 2 (01:27:41):
And those normally show up in big, big games in
the fourth So so that's where you you have just
that that that minute hesitation. I still think the Ravens
are gonna go out and get another wide receiver if
they do that. I was so surprised they didn't make
a run at Davonte Adams. There's no way the Browns
are true in the division, so you could. You couldn't
(01:28:02):
evenscuss a Maury Cooper. And the same thing. They're not
getting t Higgins either, trade not even free agent wise,
well they probably got a shot at him, but trade
wise no. And number one, well, it's easy's Kansas City.
You can't pick against them. You just as as much
as you would like to, you just can't because well,
of number fifteen. And again, when you're talking quarterbacks, it
(01:28:25):
begins and ends right there, and no one else has him.
And that's why they're unbeaten. And that's why I think
they might make a run at seventeen and oh quite frankly,
it wouldn't surprise me. Yeah, they just find ways to
win when you think they can't. And that's because of Mahomes.
So there you go.
Speaker 3 (01:28:43):
I think also Andy Reid, though, I think we gotta
give Andy Reid some credit because he gets and this defense.
I mean, honestly, I could roll my eyes talking about
how good the Chiefs end up being at the end
of every game, even when you're like they can't run,
they can't pass, they don't have a deep threat the
and then you're just like, oh they won again, Okay, yeah, exactly,
(01:29:04):
cool whatever, exactly forget my analysis.
Speaker 2 (01:29:07):
Right, Yeah, I mean it's yeah, So I go Green Bay, Washington, Detroit, Houston, Minnesota, Baltimore,
Kansas City. Kelly goes Washington, Buffalo, Houston, Detroit, Baltimore, Minnesota,
Kansas City. So there you have it. So we'll check
out all that for you next week when we roll
it out again next Thursday for you on the Magnificent
seven four forty nine at a time. Here it's the
press box, Fox Sports nine eighty w in.
Speaker 1 (01:29:26):
Eight, get on the press box called Marty now had
(01:29:53):
nine to three, seven by three, one six, one seven
zero the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty.
Speaker 2 (01:30:02):
Four fifty three remaining moments of the program Here Guardians
and Yankees in about fifteen minutes from Cleveland and game
number three of the American League Championship Series. The Kelly
and I just ran through our Magnificent seven for you,
and we should probably do this. And I didn't think
about this until it popped up. Our friend the Nude
sent us his Magnificent seven. If you have one, we'd
love to see it. Just to send it to us.
(01:30:23):
You can go to our Twitter page at nine eighty
underscore wo and A. You can go to my Twitter
handle at Marty Banners so you can, as the News did,
respond to one of our poll questions with your top seven. Heck,
we would love to see yourstely so we can tell
you how wrong you are.
Speaker 4 (01:30:37):
Yeah, and the new is kind of wrong here, I
mean no, yeah, now he is.
Speaker 2 (01:30:42):
Well, I wouldn't say wrong the.
Speaker 5 (01:30:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:30:47):
Now see before you before you you lose all your
your credibility with him. I actually thought about the forty
nine ers. I did, but without Christian McCaffrey. With just
as in insistent as they have been this year, it's
kind of hard to put them in ahead of a
team like Green Bay to me, just but not by much.
And I don't I don't necessarily see a lot. I mean,
(01:31:10):
I could have lived with the forty nine ers quite frankly,
I could have Bills, Texans, Ravens, Lions, Vikings, Chiefs. I
think you have the Ravens too low. I think you
have the Bills too high. Yeah. But other than that,
I mean, and again Chiefs. You can't pick against the Chiefs.
You just can't do it.
Speaker 3 (01:31:30):
And I can't do it. I mean the forty nine
ers are they I think I think they're suffering from
certainly not to the same level at all, but the
expectations coming into this season were so high that and
they're not even close to meeting them that I'm.
Speaker 2 (01:31:46):
Just again, well again, no Christian McCaffrey, that that's gonna put.
Speaker 3 (01:31:50):
That's exactly that's huge, that's huge. But then I think
the the lingering effects of Brandon Ayuk's almost trade situation
have absolutely affected morale around the team.
Speaker 2 (01:32:03):
See what it did up in Cleveland, Marii Cooper situation. Yeah,
I mean you could tell when word got out back
in the summer that they were considering trading him. His
demeanor changed dramatically towards the franchise and towards everything about
getting ready to play. It can be a very difficult thing,
it can. It can be very a very disrupting thing
for a football team. So yeah, obviously next week we
(01:32:27):
do this. When we do it next week, we'll throw
out and they'll let you. We'll take your magnificent sevens
as well too. We would love to do that. So, uh,
I appreciate you nude checking and again, uh, not bad,
not bad. As I said, I think you get the
bills too high. I think you get the ravens too low.
But other than that, it's pretty sensible. You know.
Speaker 3 (01:32:46):
I still have some love for the Atlanta Falcons. I
feel like the Falcons, the Packers and the Commanders.
Speaker 2 (01:32:54):
We go Studirt.
Speaker 4 (01:32:57):
Kirk Cousins, stud QB quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:33:00):
I'm I'm just.
Speaker 2 (01:33:04):
Gracious they put him in the stud quarterback.
Speaker 4 (01:33:10):
Captain quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:33:12):
Yeah, Kelly will do it right, a couple other things
update youuan before we wrap it up here this afternoon
again the college basketball breaking news within the last ten
to fifteen minutes. Tony Bennett, the head basketball coach at
Virginia who led the Cavaliers to twenty nineteen NCAA championship,
is going to announce his retirement, making official tomorrow during
(01:33:34):
a press conference at eleven o'clock. And right away you
start wondering, three weeks before the season, why now, what's
going on? Hopefully it's not a health issue, but that
would kind of be your first guess speculation wise in
this But hopefully it's nothing of that seriousness for Tony
Bennett calling it a career as the head coach at Virginia.
(01:33:55):
The Browns have announced that they are sticking with the
new Dome project that they want. They are moving ahead
with the plan for the new Dome in the suburbs.
They have informed the City of Cleveland of their intention
to move forward with the new Dome stadium in suburban
brook Park. In a news conference at Cleveland's City Hall,
Mayor Justin Bibb expressed his disappointment in the decision by
(01:34:15):
the HASLM Sports Group. There's probably a long list of
those disappointments by the HASLM Sports Group that anybody could list.
To leave the current Lakefront Stadium situation the Browns have,
we must be practical about our many needs and resources,
bib said. The city's approach has always been rooted in
fiscal responsibility and the long term value for all members
of our community. As such, I am deeply, deeply disappointed
(01:34:38):
that our exhaustive efforts that the HASLM Sports Group are
despite our exhaustive efforts, that the HASLM Sports Group has
chosen to pursuer move to brook Park. So it looks
like the Browns are headed to brook Park. So I'm
sure a lot of fans wouldn't be too unhappy if
they left entirely. But at this point, yeah, at least
take Deshaun Watson with them. That apparently is where this
(01:35:00):
is headed. So a domed stadium in brook Park it
looks to be the destination for the Cleveland Browns. So
there you have that again. There's an NFL football tonight
Denver and New Orleans at about eight fifteen tonight, doubleheader
of baseball ten minutes away Guardian Yankees and then Mets Dodgers.
That's in the nationalgu Championship Series. There are a couple
of college football games tonight, smattering of high school football
(01:35:22):
games around the area as well. Coming up tomorrow. In
the program, we will have our usual Friday recap for
you as well as our iHeart Football Radio blitz, getting
you ready for week number nine of the high school
football season. And as I said at the top of
the program, there are a truckload of big, big games
in week number nine in high school football and our
part of the state, and you'll hear all about them
coming up during that program tomorrow. Kelly's back with us
(01:35:44):
on Monday, will recap everything. I don't know how I'll feel,
but I'll be here.
Speaker 3 (01:35:49):
I'm reading for you, I hope.
Speaker 2 (01:35:52):
So we'll see on Monday, and we'll have you back
with us tomorrow at three o'clock for the press blocks
right here, Fax Sports ninety W go with it.
