Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the press box with Marty Banister, the latest
on all local sports from Right State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine three seven by three one six,
one seven zero the press Box on Fox Sports nine
(00:20):
eighty WNA.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
It was harder with the reaction that the fans came.
Whether it's an opponent that goes down in one of
our own, we don't boot. We don't boot guys that
are in John Field.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Man, it's Brown's defensive end, Miles Garrett, who obviously was
a little upset at the fan base yesterday. Welcome to
the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty w one. Ay
were you here on this Monday afternoon, Just a gorgeous
Monday as we rolled out for you here today, good
head with us as we talked with you. It is
overreaction Monday. I'm Marty Brownister, Kelly Beach producing the program
alongside for the ride today and we're glad you're with
(00:57):
us as there is so much to get into. I
am happy to tell you that I was wrong about
what would happen in Cleveland on Sunday. From a esthetics standpoint,
I was an ugly football game. I mean, I don't
know how else to kind of just be up front
and personal about it. I mean, it was just save
(01:18):
for the Charlie Jones one hundred yard kickoff to get
it started. Other than that, there wasn't a whole lot
to jump up and down and yell about. We'll get
into the situation with the fans here coming up in
a little bit, and quite honestly, and as I said,
we're going to dive into that, but I just want
to kind of throw it out here for you for
a little consumption on your part. I think this is
(01:40):
getting tremendously overblown and a lot of respects, and I
think the fan, I think the fan reaction is one
that when you when you look at it, that you
can take it a number of different ways. And as
I said, well, we'll get into that a little bit
later on during the show today, we'll get your thoughts
(02:02):
on that. We have a fan poll up on it today.
I want to hear what you think about what you
saw yesterday and do you agree that the fans were
out of line? And when I say overblown, maybe that's
being a little too I don't know what the word
is to say about it, because it just there's lots
to get into with that. Let's just say it that way,
(02:23):
and I think it is something that needs to be discussed.
I don't think there's any question about that. But we'll
do that a little bit later on during the program
this afternoon. So a couple of fan poles are up
for you today, as we always like to do on
these Mondays. After what has happened, of course, the big
news surrounding the Browns. They have made it official, but
I think if you're watching the game yesterday, you saw it.
(02:44):
You knew the moment that Deshaun Watson went down that
that was it. His season was over, And they made
it official earlier today. So we're asking you today why
should the Browns do a quarterback for the remainder of
the season with Watson done for the year. Should they
start Jamis Winston, Should they go with door Rian Thompson Robinson?
Should they perhaps go out and trade for a quarterback
or just play both and see which one is better?
(03:07):
For right now? I mean, why not? You're one and six.
I think it's pretty much a foregone conclusion. This season
is over for them as far as going to the playoffs,
So a lot of options there for the Browns. On
the flip side, the Bengals now have won two games
in a row and find themselves at three and four
(03:28):
with two straight home games coming up against two beatable
football teams. So with that in mind, having won two
in a row, we're asking Bengals fans, are you feeling
more confident about the team making the playoffs? Win the
next two? Yes, then I will really feel confident. Oh
and three is still too much to overcome? Or yes,
they are completely back and right now. Win the next
(03:48):
two and then the confidence level goes up dramatically at
that point. So that's kind of where we stand right
now with all of that. So, as I mentioned, we're
glad to have with here. Say, if you're not a
program today, our friend Dave Secuni will visit with usn
hour number to talk a little basketball. Last night U
D and Xavier played their exhibition game over at the
u D Arena, and Xavier ran away and hit and
won the game. So we'll talk to Dave about that
(04:09):
and get his thoughts on what he saw last night,
and also later on an Hour number two. University of
Dayton football coach Trevor Andrews will visit with us his
Flyers a last second win Saturday at Butler to improve
to five and one on the season. So we'll hear
from coach Andrews a little bit later on during the
program today as well too, as I mentioned Kelly B's
alongside for the ride, Well, what did you see? Did you?
(04:31):
What did you watch yesterday? I guess it's probably the
best way to phrase it right now.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
I didn't. I didn't watch nearly enough football. I'll be
honest with you.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
It was really I was. I was so.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
Busy doing all the things that life requires. But I
watched a lot really well that's rather broad, basically, it
felt that way. So I watched a lot of highlights
I did. I did watch the beginning of the Bengals
Browns game, and you know, the the game started, and
(05:07):
I when I okay, So when I turned the game on,
it was there was eleven seconds had run off the clock,
but it was seven to nothing, and I was like,
what happened? Like what could have happened? So I rewound
and I was like, oh, okay, So I was right.
I think Marty was overreacting. I think the Bengals are
going to have a good day, and has that ever
(05:30):
happened the first time? For everything? So I was at
that point I actually expected after seeing the Browns first
few drives, I was like, Okay, these are still this
year's Browns. It's I understand historically the Bengals have not
fared well Joe Joe Burrows Bengals specifically have not fared
(05:50):
well with this team, but I'm like, this team this
year is about as bad as the football team could be.
I mean, just truly disappointing in so many ways, and
I wanted something to happen. All the players talked about
Nick Chubb bringing back a spark, I didn't see it.
(06:10):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
I mean, I think it was pretty obvious that Chubb
was on a pitch count yesterday, and it's I think
it was also pretty obvious as well too. He's not
one hundred percent ready to go back and be twenty
five to thirty carry per game Nick Chubb. I don't
think there's any question about that. And I mean, he
did score a touchdown yesterday, which did get everybody pretty
(06:33):
fired up, as well it should. But and I've heard
a lot of people say after the game, well, the
Browns left so many points on the field. Well, so
did the Bengals. I mean, I fan McPherson missed a
field goal that would have made that everything that happened
in the last three or four minutes of the game
pretty much academic at that point. I mean that the
lead would have been at ten. If he'd nailed that
(06:56):
field goal, it would have just salted it away. But
he was unable to do that. The Bengals left some
points on the field too, I will say it though
as well too, going up against an awful Cleveland offense.
Cincinnati's defense I think has kind of found its footing
again and again getting everybody healthy. Geno Stone, by the way,
who left the game. That was in the fourth quarter,
(07:18):
wasn't it when Stone went down when he and von
Bell collided. But Stone is up and walking around, and
everybody seems to think from the Cincinnati camp that he'll
be good to go this Sunday when they when they
walk home in Philadelphia, Orlando, Brown is expected to be back.
So the injuries were just ones that couldn't get them
back in the game. But they're not season ending or
game ending or weekending type injury, So that that's a
(07:40):
positive right there from the Cincinnati side of things. So
that's that's a positive for the Bengals there, So we'll
take that and h and run with it from that standpoint.
So that's a good thing. So Cincinnati can use that
as a advantage too. Look ahead to what's coming up
(08:02):
this week with Philadelphia coming in and then with the
Raiders coming in the week after that, who are a
mess in their own right right now. So a lot
of that to dive into as well too as we
as we go along here this afternoon in the press box.
Some other things to tell you about it as we
move along. There a couple of Monday night games tonight,
one of them of a men's interest. Ravens and Tampa
(08:23):
Bay play tonight. How about the Pittsburgh Steelers. Russell Wilson
comes back on the field and looked very good. So
and again somehow the Steelers are five and two. Yeah,
and if and if the Ravens stumble tonight in Tampa,
I don't think they will. But then Pittsburgh has the
lead in the AFC North, which is just staggering when
(08:45):
you think about it, because I don't know that anybody
myself included figured that they would be anywhere near the lead,
But there they are. And so anyway, that's that's tonight
Ravens at Tampa Bay. We mentioned come up on the
program today, we'll hear from our friend Dave SECOUTI w
also hear from UDI football coach Trevor Andrews talk back
(09:06):
look back at the Flyers went over Butler over. The
weekend World Series is now set as the Yankees defeated
the Cleveland Guardians and knocked them off to end the
season on Saturday. We what the twenty four hours it
was for Cleveland? Huh, Guardians lose get eliminated from the
playoffs on Saturday, and then last and then yesterday of
course losing to the Bengals in the one hundred and
(09:27):
second Battle of Ohio. So the World Series.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
They lost to Sean Watson for the year.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Well that that We're gonna get into that here in
a couple of minutes. I don't think that's the biggest thing.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
I just I just mean it. It feels like insult
to injury. It's like nobody even wanted this guy and
I even have them.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
That's the insult part of it. Yeah, But we'll think
of we'll talk about that coming up here in a
couple of minutes. In that regard, I've heard a lot
of people say that, well, baseball got one. It wonted.
They got Yankees Dodgers in the World Series. And that's
for because you hear all this comment all the time
about well, it's obviously major League Baseball from a monetary standpoint,
(10:07):
small market teams can't compete. Well, this is the first
time the Yankees have been in a World Series since
two thousand and nine. The Dodgers have been in it.
This is the fourth time they've been in seven years,
but the only year they won it was the COVID year.
So while yeah, I understand they can go out and
buy all these great players and do all these things,
and it did make a difference in the series with
(10:27):
the Guardians, I mean, Juan Soto stepped up big. Aaron
Judge obviously, who's a Yankee farm hand, but a guy
like Sodo, Jan Carlos Stanton also we're huge in those games.
But if Cleveland's big guys step up, that was maybe
the closest five game series that I've seen in a
long long time in Major League Baseball. If Emmanuel class
(10:48):
is anywhere near what he was during the regular season,
that series is still going on, right, Yeah, but the
Yankees just lit him up and found him and I
don't know what happened as far as in ability to
suddenly not get people out, but he picked the wrong
time to do it, and that is obvious. But still
I don't think there's that much of a separation between
(11:09):
the two. So yeah, I get where a lot of
baseball fans say, yeah, it's a money thing that the
teams are the most money can buy it, but as
we're seeing, they don't always win. I mean, the World
Series last year was Arizona, Texas, so we get we
get a Yankees Dodgers World Series, and I think from
a baseball historian standpoint, that's pretty cool. I mean, I
(11:31):
think you go back and look at all the years
of these two franchises, and again you hear a lot
of people say, oh, I can't stand the Yankees, I
can't stand the Dodgers. Well, fair enough, I I get that.
But from a baseball traditional standpoint, this is this is
pretty cool. I think it's gonna be I think it's
gonna be very good World Series. I do so that's
what we have on that we're working to put together
(11:53):
a show for you this week. I've already got lined
up Tip head coach Matt Burke Burke Backer to come
on the program. Trying to get Xenius, which lined up
to come on too. This Friday night huge football game
to wrap up the regular season in the area, the
de facto Miami Valley League championship game between unbeaten Tip
and Xenia. That'll be Friday night at seven at Xenia.
They're both unbeaten right now after winning their games on Friday,
(12:15):
so we're going to have certainly Tips coach on it. Again.
I'm trying to get Xenia lined up as well too,
So if you're a Xenia, a fan, Xenia athletic administrator, whatever,
tell coach hey, give me a shout. I'm gonna get
him on the program. I've sent emails, I've sent text messages.
I haven't got anything back yet, so but I'll make
sure we get both ends of that covered up. So
let's see what else from over the weekend. The WNBA
(12:37):
Championship has been decided. Kelly would have four of the
ladies and recap all that four us coming up a
little bit later on this week, But that was a
heck of a finish. And you hear people already complaining
about the way that game ended with the officiating officials
again score more points. You don't have to worry about
those things. So that's from over the weekend. We'll look
(12:58):
back at some of that as well too. Saturday, I
was down in Oxford to see Ohio and Miami play
in the one hundredth Battle of the Bricks. Miami won
at thirty to twenty over Ohio at Yager Stadium. That's
the first time I've had a chance to be down
there and see a game. And what a And I
know Ohio fans are probably throwing things at the radio
right now when you hear me say this, but what
(13:21):
a great setting that was on Saturday. I mean, sunny skies,
bright blue sky, sunshine, the foliage behind the far side
stands just hung over the atmosphere. It was just a
beautiful day save for the outcome of the game with
Miami winning, but it was just a spectacular day. And
(13:42):
I think in these days of college football being so
much of a business, to have a chance to go
to a setting like that and watch a college football game. Yeah,
I'd take that over just about any other setting in
college football. I think it was a great afternoon again,
save for the outcome of the game with Miami winning
thirty to twenty. Of course, we have Miami. We had
the game for you right here on the Miami Call
(14:03):
with the legendary Steve Baker on the Cold Well dude
tomorrow on the program again, we're gonna try talking about
high school fotball. Wednesday, Matt Cotney visits with us from
the Nebraska Radio Network. The corn Huskers who were corn
shucked at Indiana on Saturday, Well, it's taking any better
f When they come to Columbus this week to play
Ohio State. Matt will join us. He'll preview the Huskers
for us on Thursday. The voice of the Cleveland Cavalier,
(14:23):
Tim out Corn, will join us. Calves open up on
the road Wednesday night in the NBA at Toronto, and
Tim will be with us on Thursday to recap that
for us. When we come back, we'll dive into what
happened yesterday up in Cleveland. Get your thoughts on that again.
Our fan polls are up today right until five o'clock
as well. So good to have with us here on
this Monday over Reaction Monday on the press Fox Fox
Sports ninet eighty W A name.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
Get on the press box called Marty. Now at nine
to three seven buy three one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN.
Speaker 4 (15:16):
We are live. Welcome back to Fox Sports nine eighty WNE.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
Oh righty, sorry about that. We were doing a couple
of things technically, trying to get everything up and working here,
and we're that good to have you with us here
the press box rolling right long, Fox Sports nine eighty WN,
Am Marty Banister. As you heard, Kelly Bees producing the program.
Good thing she's here. This program would never get on
the air, So we are with you here today and
again with you right up until the hour of five
(15:44):
o'clock in the program this afternoon. All right, well, let's
talk about yesterday in Cleveland. Well, where should we start
with this, Kelly? Should we go with the fans? Shall
we go with the game itself? Do they both kind
of equal? Are they both of equal importance? I think
in this I was having a tough time with it
earlier today listening. Does some other folks talk about it
(16:07):
and the reaction it is, I guess, and we've had
this discussion before about fans and what you think you're
entitled to a games. I mean, you pay your money
for your tickets and you I mean, I think it's
in some respects. It's not like you hear this discussion
(16:29):
about the First Amendment A lot of times people say, well,
you're allowed to say whatever you want. Yeah, but you're not.
Doesn't make you immune from the repercussions of what you say.
Let me start with you on this. You buy a
ticket to an event, what do you think that allows
you to do.
Speaker 4 (16:46):
I'm pretty sure that most venues and entities like that
have like a code of conduct. I mean, I think
whenever I'm going out, I always try to not impede
on other people's experience. So if I'm going to a
concert or a game, I wouldn't want to prevent someone
(17:10):
else from doing that same thing. So I wouldn't stand
in front of them. If they're shorter than we necessarily,
or in a wheelchair or something like that, I would
make sure, you know, I'd make room. But I think
that is maybe going a little bit above and beyond.
I don't think that's you're entitled to that. I think
I'm just a nicer person than a lot of people.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
That's probably true. Well, I guess the point of it is.
And if you're wondering what we're discussing, there there were
reports and people at the game, the Browns players certainly
felt this happen. Now, when Deshaun Watson came onto the
field at the start of the game, he was roundly booed.
And okay, that's that's another topic. We're going to get
into his wall two a little bit later. And not
(17:53):
so much that he was roundly booed, but the reaction
to the fan base in that regard with Watson. But
when he went down with the Achilles injury, and I mean,
and you knew right away if you're watching the game.
I was with a buddy of mine. We were watching it,
and there were a lot of the people of the estabishment.
We were watching it. At the moment that happened, everybody went, oh,
(18:14):
he's done. Because you can just kind of tell the
I don't know if gruesome is the word, but it
was there and it was ugly. I mean, it was
I mean, and you can just tell the moment it
happened that well, that's all she wrote. His season is
over for the Browns. But there are reports, and there
(18:36):
are a lot of people who were there saying there
were folks in the press box who were saying they
heard it that fans either cheered or were expressing happiness
that he was hurt. Now, again, I defy you to
tell me what eighty thousand people are feeling, because that's
(18:57):
part of it as well too, I think in this
but and this was a discussion that was going on
again with the group Vibe was with watching the game yesterday,
and let me see if you agree with this. Their
reaction was the reaction of well, this is finally over now,
this being Deshaun Watson, and whether it's terrible that he's hurt,
(19:19):
I'm not gonna argue that. I mean, heck, the guy
was fifteen to seventeen throwing the football to that point.
I know it was for just one hundred and twenty
three yards, because it still looks to me like he
can't throw the ball downfield. Correct, he just can't do it.
But what it looked to me is like there was
just that almost that air of well, this is finally over.
Now we can go go get another quarterback on the field,
(19:42):
and I think a lot of that stems Kelly from
the Browns front office and the Browns coaching staff consistently
telling people he gives us the best chance to win,
when if you watch them play, it's pretty obvious that
he doesn't. And I think that's where a lot that
reaction may have came out. Again, as I said, I
(20:04):
defy you to tell me what eighty thousand people are thinking,
especially if it was just a minute percentile of the
ones that were there. Now, there's sure there are some
bozos out there in that crowd who were undoubtedly yelling
and screaming and happy that he was hurt. I won't.
I won't deny that at all. But at the same time,
I think it's hard to label an entire fan base
(20:27):
because of three or four morons who were there. It's
probably more than three or four. But I think you
know what I'm saying with this, So I yeah that part,
but I think it was just more of a okay,
we can finally move on now type of reaction. Whether
that's fair or not, you're gonna have to determine that yourself.
(20:47):
But that's kind of way I see it. I don't
think it's a oh good, Yeah, he's heard, he's done
good this. You know, we hate this guy, YadA, YadA, YadA,
And I know there's some of that.
Speaker 4 (20:56):
There definitely some of that.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
And that's the reaction I got, Kelly, some of the
people I was with yesterday was that the reaction was, Wow, Okay,
this is finally over. We can move on down.
Speaker 4 (21:05):
Yeah, almost like the it's almost like the cloud had
been lifted exactly exactly. I think that it wasn't so
much cheering that he's hurt. It was more cheering that
we're done with this experiment. You know, we're not. No
one is expecting I think at this stage for Deshaun
(21:25):
Watson to have a comeback season because he's out. I
mean we're in the middle of the season right now,
like the first quarter ish, but close to the middle
of the season. He's going to be out a whole
three sixty five, a whole year, right and then and
then you hope that it heals enough that he can
(21:45):
start ramping up at that point, and everyone isn't Aaron
Rodgers or or even Kirk Cousins, who actually came back
relatively quickly from.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
This stud quarterback.
Speaker 4 (21:58):
Listen, he is he is? Okay, Okay. So I think
that the Browns can should, I mean, the front office
should use this opportunity as a great easy way to
walk away from Deshaun Watson.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
And in a lot of ways. Is it not fair
to say the problem solved itself? Yeah? And I hate
to be that, but I think that's kind of where you.
I think that's kind of where the fan base was
kind of at too. Hey, the problem has just solved
itself for us, and that's I mean, you hate to
feel that way or look at it that way. And
(22:41):
I think it was interesting too, how because you had
heard all week and we're taking away obviously from Cincinnati
winning the game, but this is kind of an interesting story,
an interesting sideline to all of this yesterday, but you
had heard all season long. Really well, Amari Cooper doesn't
like Deshaun Watson. The offensive line doesn't, doesn't They don't
(23:04):
like Deshaun Watson. Not gonna black for him, this that
blah blah blah. Well, what was the universal message after
the game from Browns players? They were all, I mean,
almost to a man, everyone that spoke to a media
member were pointing their fingers at the at the crowd
saying hey, we don't do this in Cleveland, which it
was almost a unified front. It's it almost sounded like
(23:25):
they went to the locker when they went to the
locker room after the game, they took a couple of
minutes and went, hey, let's all be on one page here,
on one voice with this. Because every player, every player
that spoke said almost that to a almost to a letter, Hey,
this is not this is not who we are. We
hate this, this is not right. If you're cheering for
him to be hurt, that's terrible. That's not what we are.
(23:48):
But it was it was almost to a player, which
was I think either at counterbalances, counterbalances all of that
argument that no one liked the guy, or that they
all understood it could be them, which I think is
part of it too, But also to me just seem
like they went with a unified front. So you know,
we're not gonna play this right now with you.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
Guys, absolutely, I think. I mean, that's that is being
a good teammate. I think for the fans, though, you
know who are not in the locker room, who don't
know Deshaun Watson personally for two of the fan, you're
the guy that's making my football team lose. I'm sorry.
Get off the field, though, And I think that was
(24:28):
the energy of the booze and more than more than oh,
I want this man to be injured and his career over.
And I don't even think it was all of that.
I really just thought it was this is the guy
that you guys keep putting in front of us, telling
us he gives us the best chance for our football
team to win. But we all have eyeballs. None of
us are none of us are brand new football fans. Okay,
(24:50):
especially Browns fans.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
These.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
If you're a Browns fan, you have been through the mud.
You've seen horrible football for years, and this is particularly
horrible football. So you can't look at a Browns fan
and tell them, hey, like this.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
This is good. We love this. And that was my
point earlier about how they've been force fed this from
Kevin Stefanski, from whoever speaks to the media, be it
the offensive coordinator, whomever speaks, Hey, he gives us the
best chance to win it. And as you said, as
a fan, you go, hey, wait a minute, come on,
(25:29):
why do you keep doing this? To us. And to
back that stat up a little bit, I uncovered this
doing some research earlier today. Of all the teams in
the National Football League, there are thirty two of them,
and of all the schools that play FBS college football, okay,
there's only one team among all of those teams that
has not scored at least twenty points in a game
(25:49):
this year. You know which one it is?
Speaker 4 (25:52):
Is it your Cleveland Brown?
Speaker 3 (25:54):
It is your Cleveland Brown. Wow, everybody else in football
at the FBS or NFL level has scored at least
twenty points in the game at one time except for
the Cleveland Browns. Which, again, if you're going to be
told that that gives us the best chance to win
games with that offense the way it is, well, that
kind of shoots that theory down. And now that it's over,
(26:17):
that's the next realm of all of this is, now
that this is over for the season, what do you
do next year? Do you have to go into the
draft and now draft a quarterback? Do you play Dorian
Thompson Robinson the rest of the way and see if
he is indeed the guy? And do you play Jamis Winston?
Because when Winston came in the game yesterday, it turned
(26:41):
a little bit. I was like, Oh my gosh, he's
gonna this guy. This guy's gonna bring him back and
they're gonna win because Cincinnati offensively was just pretty much
stagnant yesterday for most of the game. He takeaway the
Charlie Jones kick return, and that thing is I mean,
it was close as it was too close, as it
was too close to closer than it should have been.
Thank goodness, the Bengals decided to once again play very
(27:01):
very well, and they did. But again, I think you
can mitigate that a little bit because of how bad
the Browns offense is. But that's kind of where this
is at right now, because now the Browns from an
organization top to bottom, they have to do some serious thinking.
Now what do we do? Why do we do the
rest of the season. That's part of our one of
our fan polls we have up for you this afternoon.
We're asking you today, if you are the Browns, what
(27:24):
do you do a quarterback the rest of the way out?
Do you start Jamis Winston, do you go with Thompson Robinson?
Do you trade for a quarterback or do you kind
of play both of them? And see which one's better
in the situations, or however you want to work it out,
right now, start Jameis Winston getting fifty eight percent of
the vote, because let's face it, two, you're one and six.
You look at what they have left on their schedule.
(27:45):
They've got the Ravens this Sunday. They're not winning that game.
I mean, I'm sorry, in their current status, I mean,
there's a real possibility they could be one in thirteen
rolling into the latter part of December. I mean, that's
if you look at their schedule, that's with where they're
at right now. That's what they're kind of looking at
right now. Yeah, that's a very good phrase to use.
(28:08):
So again I will say this not being there, I
defy you to tell me what again, I'll say, seventy
five to eighty thousand people are thinking, there's no question.
There were a few that were doing that yesterday when
he went down. But I'll tell you, I just think
it was almost more the reaction was, all right, we
can move on now this is over. He's not coming back.
(28:29):
Let's let's go a different direction. Speaking which when we
come back, what do you think of the Cincinnati part
of this yesterday. We'll talk about that when we come
back three thirty three. As we roll along, it's the
press box Fox Sports ninet eighty WA.
Speaker 1 (29:08):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three seven by three, one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN, and.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
We're back with you in the press box, Fox Sports
nine eighty Wnam, Marty Banners are good to have you
with us here on this Monday afternoon. Mentioned a little
bit earlier how we're going to try and get a
hero here from both coaches rather in the Titanic Xenia
tip showdown coming up this Friday night in high school
Football Action. Our friend Scott Ward has checked in with us,
and I always appreciate Scott hearing from you. Thanks for
(29:43):
the info. I knew this game was coming up. I
just hadn't mentioned it, but I thank you for what
you said. Also on Friday night. I mean, we talked
about big games, and we've talked about the Midwest ATLTIC
Conference a number of times on this show. But Mary
Local and Coldwater see each other on Friday night, and
it's the game that, for the four straight season, will
(30:05):
decide the Midwest. I a conference championship. Marion Local hasn't
lost a game since I think the Truman administration, I think,
or something like that. That's how impressive they have been.
They've just run rough shot over just about everybody in
the MAC except cold Water. Those two have played some
great games over the years. They were going to see
(30:27):
each other on Friday night should be a great game,
and that one on Friday and it's at Cold Water
and it will be tremendous high school football. And that's
what I think one of the great things about our area.
You look at it and within about fifty sixty miles
of each other, we have four teams that are unbeaten
that are playing each other on Friday night. And that's
a great thing. And that's that's gonna be a lot
(30:48):
of fun. And Scott, thank you for fording that information
to me. I greatly appreciate it. And yeah, that one
should be a lot of fun. But those are ones
where you wish you could be at a game like
that from a high schol football standpoint, knowing certainly in
that community, what those two teams, that in that league,
what those two communities are all about, that that would
be a boatload of fun to be at that one
(31:09):
and again, Scott, thanks for a fording and information to me.
I greatly appreciate it. Back to what happened yesterday in
Cleveland with the Bengals and the Browns and the Bengals
winning to go to three and four, here's a part
of it I'm having difficulty with, and we also have
a fan pull up on that end of it. Two
about the Bengals doesn't raise your level of confidence that
they can get back and make a run to the playoffs.
(31:32):
Eighty percent of you say, let's win the next two
and then see where we're at exactly Because the next
two are the Eagles on Sunday and then the Las
Vegas Raiders the following week. Neither team should be confused
with the Kansas City Chiefs right now. Although of the two,
I think the Eagles are probably the better of the two,
(31:53):
and that will not be an easy one to win.
Philadelphia has some standout defensive players. Devonte Smith that whiteout
is obviously a caliber wide receiver in the National Football League,
so I think it will be a good test for Cincinnati.
But if this defense can continue to play the way
that it's playing right now, I mean again, I'm trying
(32:17):
to keep this in perspective because if you look at
the three teams Cincinnati has defeated right now on the season,
they are combined, I think it's five and seventeen. I
think it is five and seventeen or four and seventeen
the three teams they've beatn Carolina, the New York Giants,
and then the Cleveland Browns. So they haven't exactly won
three games against great football teams, but you can only
(32:40):
beat the teams that show up on your schedule every week,
and well they managed to do that each of the
last two weeks, and coming back home where they haven't
won a game yet this year, which is still just fascinating.
They haven't won a home game yet. What's that?
Speaker 4 (32:57):
It's shocking?
Speaker 3 (32:58):
Really? Yeah? I mean yeah, because especially you lose to
an awful New England team right out of the shoot
and well, anyway, we can go back and rehash all
that till you're blue and face. But nonetheless, I just
think that the opportunity, even more than it has been
all season now, is really staring you in the face
because you can get to five and four before that
(33:20):
Thursday night trip to Baltimore, which puts you again, right
back in the mix and all of this, which is
just where you want to be. And now, having finally
won a division game, no matter how ugly it was,
here you are. And I will say this too, the
play of Marius Mens a right tackle. I was worried.
I mean, I joked a couple of people last week
(33:41):
on Tuesday said Miles gets Tuesday. Miles Garrett already has
three sacks running past the Marya's men. Mary's mems I
thought was fantastic. Yesterday I thought he was and I'll
give a Cody Ford credit too when he went in
and left tackle when Orlando Brown Junior had to go
out of the game. That also, I shown it when
I saw that. But I thought Orlando Brown Junior played
(34:03):
pretty well, or Cody Ford rather played pretty well yesterday.
Now he's not Orlando Brown. He did get beat a
couple of times, but for the most part, he held
his own, which is about all you can ask him
to do in that situation. Now here's I think a
very telling story or stat rather on Nimarius Memes. Since
coming in when Trent Brown went down, Mims has played
over four hundred snaps. Kelly and hasn't been penalized yet.
Speaker 4 (34:27):
Wow, that's very impressive.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
That's pretty impressed. Now that's not to say he got
a rookie. He hasn't committed a pedal. I mean obviously
heard right as we've all heard, you can call holding
it just about every play. But yeah, that's where he's
at right now. And I again, I thought yesterday, up
against Miles Garrett, up against the people that Cleveland has
up front, I kind of kept an eye on that
(34:50):
best I could, and I was pretty impressed with the rookie.
The Bengals might obviously have have won this one from
a draft pick standpoint for a guy that's what he
played eight games at Georgia is that what it was?
Eight or nine games something like that because of injuries,
so before I decided to leave school. So yeah, that's
a plus. I'm still a little it's I think we're
(35:15):
all kind of waiting now the defense is playing its best.
I think we're kind of waiting for the offense to
kind of get back to where it was a couple
of weeks back. If the defense can continue to do this,
you get both these sides of the ball doing what
they're doing right now. This I think it has the
possibility to be a very dangerous team. I think again,
(35:36):
I still haven't running the flag up on. Yeah, they're
they're going, They're they're going to make the playoffs now
I think they can. Again, how many times have you
heard me say this? If they get this one this Sunday,
then we can start thinking ahead. Well, that's kind of
where we're at right now. I think if they knock
off the Eagles, that gets you to five hundred. I
(35:57):
think the Raiders game obviously, and those games that Cincinnati
has managed to lose certainly this year, when you think, oh,
it's a winnable game this week, but here's your opportunity.
It's staring you right in the face. And I don't
know after an oh one to three start if you
could ask for anything more right now, if you're Zach
Taylor and his coaching staff. That's just kind of the
way I see it. Again. I'm still not sitting here
(36:18):
and tell you that this is a super Bowl caliber team, don't.
I don't really think that it is. But it's a
team that I think can fight its way back into
the mix and make life miserable for people and maybe
sneak into this thing. I don't know, it's as wild
as it is right now. If you look at all
the teams in this right now, it's I think just
(36:39):
the AFC outside of the top. We would you say
Kansas City obviously we're gonna do Magnificent seven on Thursday,
but I mean obviously Kansas City, the Houston Texans despite
their loss yesterday at Green Bay, the Baltimore Ravens. Yeah,
I'm just talking at AFC. I mean, it's Kansas City,
(37:01):
it's Houston, it's Baltimore. And then after that.
Speaker 4 (37:04):
It is kind of an open Maybe.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
Maybe do you put Pittsburgh in that right now? You know,
I don't know, you kind of have to.
Speaker 4 (37:13):
I mean you you actually have to.
Speaker 3 (37:15):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (37:15):
It's not they don't look good, but they're still winning.
And that's kind of been the story about Pittsburgh the
last couple of years.
Speaker 3 (37:22):
Here, they don't look good, right but they but they're
winning to win, but they're winning. And Russell Wilson maybe
he has found the fountain of youth. I mean, that
was an odd chance to see much of that game
at all last night, but sure sounded like he played well.
And here they are five and five and two five
(37:44):
and two, and if the Ravens somehow lose tonight, well
then they're in first place all by themselves, which again
is just okay three forty six when we come back.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
Why don't you hear Miles Garrett's comments from after the
game today what his reaction was to everything that went
on surrounding Deshaun Watson and the Browns Bengals at three
and four home for Philadelphia this week, flex time of
the game has been moving to one o'clock out of
the four twenty five windows. Oh, by the way, it's
the press box Fox Sports nine eighty wa get on
(38:31):
the press box, called Marty now at nine to three,
seven by three, one six, one seven zero the press
box on Fox Sports nine eighty WNA Hey, we're back with.
Speaker 3 (38:44):
You here on this Monday. It is the press box
Fox Sports nine eighty w A, im, Marty Banister. We
are so glad you're spending some time with us here
this afternoon as we recap another busy, busy weekend NFL
Action College football the World Series is now set and
we can get into all that for you. Next. Our
friend Dave Secuti will visit with us. College basketball going
on as well, too, and we'll also here from University
(39:05):
of Dayton football coach Trevor Andrews next hour as well. Well.
As we told you during the first part of the program,
there was a lot of discussion about the reaction of
the fan base yesterday in Cleveland to Deshaun Watson's appearance
on the field and then to his injury on the field.
After the game, the Browns team, almost in unison, went
on and came out to the media and spoke out
against what they perceived to be the negative reaction from
(39:28):
the fan base. Leading the way after the game was
their defensive captain and the Defensive Player of the Year
of the National Football League last year, defensive end Miles Garrett.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
It was harder with the reaction that the fans came.
Whether it's an opponent that goes down in one of
our own, we don't boo. We don't boot guys that
are in jo on the field, especially with the extent
with the cart comes out. No, that's and we should
be ashamed of ourselves, no as as Browns and as
fans to to boot anyone and their their downfall to
(40:04):
be seasoned, altering, career altering injury.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
Man.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
It's not perfect. He doesn't need to be None of
us are expected to be perfect. Can't jude him for
what he does and the often fit are on the
field because I can't throw stones from my glass house.
But we need to do better. We need to do
better on the football field, and we need to do
better as fans for having some empathy for a man
who's who's doing the best he can and did the
(40:29):
best he can up to this point, and we have
to be better.
Speaker 3 (40:32):
What does that mean he does that offer in your
opinion of Brown's fans.
Speaker 2 (40:38):
Ultimately everyone's soon and they're disappointed just like we are.
But we have to be better than that as as people. No,
there's there's levels to this. At the end of the day,
it's just a game, and you don't boo anybody being injured,
and you don't you don't celebrate anyone's downfall.
Speaker 5 (40:59):
He just tossed them sticking away specifically said do Shaan injuries?
How tough was that as a teammate to see that
and be able to kind of see him after the
game and the same between him since.
Speaker 2 (41:09):
I haven't been on to see him since the game,
But I mean, yeah, could you.
Speaker 3 (41:13):
Talk about the game a minute, Miles. You guys have
done pretty well getting this Joe Burrows in the past.
What uh what happened there today?
Speaker 2 (41:21):
I mean they just didn't did enough and had two
touchdowns and you know, defensively, you know that you're you're
hoping to keep him under seventeen points. That's that's a
that's a pretty solid day at their office. And uh,
you know, w we had, you know, a couple of
big plays, but for the most part, we felt like
we kept them contained. No, we need to get some
more takeaways that that would have sworn the momentum of
(41:43):
the game. But uh, it was a it was we
had uh a lapse in which they they scored, but
we were pretty consistent throughout.
Speaker 3 (41:51):
I know you've been supportive of DeShawn during all the struggles.
How bad do you feel for him to see him
go down like that? No one deserves that.
Speaker 2 (42:03):
H M. I've seen him work his ass off to
you know, get back here in here and and uh,
you know, put a smile on his face and you
try to put everything that's outside the facility behind him.
No death threats, people coming to his house, people you know,
(42:25):
going after his family. No, Like I said, no, one
deserves that. And and I hate using the word deserves.
I'm usually pretty consistent saying earned he he hadn't earned it,
ain't doesn't deserve it. No, man does pretty much everything right.
He's been a you know, a model citizen through through
college and most of the pros. He plays the game
(42:47):
as hard as anyone I've seen, puts everything on the line,
wanting to throw his body out there. And you know,
he plays the game at one hundred miles power and
there there's a risk can be injured, and that he
took that. But we have to be there for him
as a team, as an organization. We can't look down
on a guy because of uh, any mistakes on the
field or anything off the field, or we're we we
(43:09):
don't have anything. We don't have any more high ground
to to look down on a guy.
Speaker 3 (43:15):
When he gets injured like that had a non contact
play and what does what does that make you think?
Speaker 2 (43:22):
No idea ida, I really didn't get to see the play.
Speaker 6 (43:25):
It seems like throughout the season you were pretty supportive
of him, uh and knowing that if you guys all
did your part, you guys on your side of the ball,
and everybody else on offense that you know that the
Shawn would probably fair on what a lot better than
he did. Is that your view of how how things
kind of work?
Speaker 2 (43:43):
That's how you expect it. It's complimentary football. We do well,
get the ball back and uh they do well. But
it's not always that easy. It's not always no one
BLUs one else y sometimes so you know, those those
guys make plays on the other end, don't. I think
I think it's been uh a culmination and things on
on iron not not executing as we should, but also
(44:05):
you know, you know, them having an answer for what
we're doing as well.
Speaker 3 (44:08):
Whyles like the contrast is is kind of striking today.
Speaker 4 (44:12):
But you send the interest of Nick Chubb coming back,
What did you think of that moment and.
Speaker 3 (44:16):
The way he plays?
Speaker 2 (44:19):
Think he did well, seemed like he was on a
a pitch count, and uh, I wanted to take care
of him, and I think it's a smart thing to do.
It's a long season, and I wanted to see him, uh,
you know, continue to to grow and improve from here
and to get more confident and comfortable, uh you know,
taking hits and then bouncing off those hits and breaking tackles.
But Uh, I think he did well.
Speaker 7 (44:40):
Why how did you guys writ in the situation a
year ago where Dorian Uh? Assuming Dorian, you know, I
is is good, goes next week. What's sort of the
message to him? You know what the message to him
from his teammates and what does you know what kid
he learned from just what he went through a year ago?
As he's kind, you know, please thrown into that.
Speaker 2 (45:01):
Again, sew the game down, don't take your time. Well,
we as as your teammates, as your family, have your back.
You don't have to make every single play. And I
have plays to be a big play. You're getting slowly
no grinded down the field or you know, if you
should a big play, go for it, but that it
doesn't have to be every single one. And now we
(45:22):
believe in is historing ability. We believe in his legs.
But you don't take unncessary hits, don't take unncessary resk
and just go for uh, don't go go for those
plays when you see them. Don't force anything.
Speaker 6 (45:35):
See we got to maybe the last one so close
to Okay, I'm sorry, it just seems like this just
isn't the Cleveland Browns football team that these fans knowing
love and that you guys believed yourselves to be I mean,
are you shocked that this is the product that you
guys have been putting out there?
Speaker 2 (45:51):
I'm disappointed?
Speaker 5 (45:52):
That's what?
Speaker 8 (45:52):
Right?
Speaker 3 (45:54):
Are you shocked at the product you've been putting out there?
Interesting phrasing to that question. I think that was Mary
Kay Cabot, who covers the Browns on a pretty regular basis.
Tough question, Yeah it is, and I mean, what else
is he going to? I thought he answered it very well.
(46:15):
He didn't say shocked, he just said disappointed, and I
think that's probably better. I yeah, are you shocked at
what you's? You're right, that's a that's a tough question.
That's a tough question to answer, and I think Miles
Garrett answered it very well. And if you caught a
good portion of that. And I wanted to play it
(46:35):
because I listened to some of the other player reactions
today and this one was more pointed, I think than
any of the others. He he was and he's been
a staunch supporter of Shaun Watson all throughout all of this,
But to listen to him, I mean, he was very
is it vociferous in defending him. Is he very I
(46:57):
mean aggressive in defending him something because of because of
all the things that have happened. I mean, he mentioned
the death threats, and I mean those are things I
had not heard any of that. I'm sure that there
are some buffoons out there that do things like that,
and probably Watson had to deal with some of that. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (47:17):
I mean, if if the Lion's head coach is getting
death threats enough for losing a game, yeah, I'm sure
that someone in Cleveland is acting out.
Speaker 3 (47:28):
And that's the thing I think we all have to
kind of keep in the back of your mind with
all of this. While I'm sure, again as we said earlier,
there were probably a few of these sub humans in
the stands who were yelling and screaming and happy that
he was hurt. But again, the minute percentile of those
(47:48):
that were doing that does not overlap the majority who weren't.
But like I said, I think the reaction was probably Okay,
this is over. Now we can move on. We can
finally move on, and that's what we'll do next hour.
We'll talk a little college basketball, Dave security business with us.
The Baseball World Series is all lined up. We'll get
ready for that, Yankees and Dodgers, and a lot else
(48:11):
to get into as we move along. Here, it's the
press box on this Monday, Fox Sports nine eighty.
Speaker 1 (48:15):
W Welcome to the press Box with Marty Banister, the
(48:54):
latest on all local sports from Wright State to the
Dayton Flyers, from the Rats and Guys to the Bengals
and Browns. Called Marty now at nine to three, seven
by three, one six, one seven zero the press Box
on Fox Sports nine eighty WNI.
Speaker 3 (49:13):
That's where you go do. Great teams find ways to win,
and I think we have a chance to be a
great team.
Speaker 8 (49:19):
We're not that yet.
Speaker 3 (49:22):
Joe Burrow, Bengals quarterback, after yesterday's win over the Cleveland
Browns twenty one to fourteen in Cleveland. Welcome back to
the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty w O am,
Marty Banners. We're glad to have you was here on
this Monday overreaction Monday, as we always like to call it,
as we look back at what happened over the weekend.
Kelly Be's producing the program, She's alongside for the ride,
and you have us right up until five o'clock. College
football over the weekend, Ohio State was idle buck Eys
(49:45):
number four in both national polls. The new number one
the Oregon Ducks, who jumped up to the top spot
after winning at Purdue on Friday night, and I thought
it was interesting. I'm not surprised obviously that Oregon won
that produce a bat f ball team, but the way
Oregon won the game short week, coming off of a
(50:07):
obviously a massive win over Ohio State, to have to
travel all the way back across the country to go
to West Lafayette and to shut them out and be
very impressive in doing so, I thought that was a
pretty impressive win for the Ducks, quite frankly, and not
that the Ohio State game wasn't, but just to see
them bounce back like that, I thought was pretty impressive.
(50:29):
The new number two is Georgia. The Bulldogs jumped up
to the top spot or to the number two spot
after winning at former number one Texas over the weekend.
Penn State's number three, Ohio State four in the AP poll.
It's Texas, Miami, Tennessee, LSU, Clemson, Iowa State the remaining
top ten and the coaches rankings after Ohio State, It's Miami, Texas, LSU, Tennessee, Clemson,
(50:53):
and Iowa State. If you look at the polls and
you look at where teams are, Alabama lost in Knoxville
on Saturday in Tennessee. Last year, four teams made the
College Football Playoff, the champion Michigan, Washington, Alabama, and Texas.
And right now three of those four teams are likely.
(51:16):
There is the distinct possibility that three of those four
will miss the playoff this year. Certainly Michigan and Washington
are going to do it. Neither one of them will
make the playoff. The Wolverines are completely out of consideration
after losing to Illinois on Saturday, so they have three losses.
So they're running the national championship. Repeat is over Washington,
They're run at it is over Alabama. Suddenly is in
(51:38):
a various in a very precarious situation right now where
they find themselves. They are now at five and two
after the loss in Knoxville, and so they're at five
and two. So one more slip up by Alabama and
(51:59):
that's not out around with possibility because of what some
of the games they have left to play. So I
have to play their big rivalry game with Auburn down
the stretch. So uh, and you think Kaylen, you think
coaches are feeling to heat. You think Kaylen to boor
is not feeling the heat in Tuscaloosa right now? Oh boy?
Speaker 2 (52:15):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (52:15):
They have left to play. They have to They have
to play host to Missouri, they go to LSU, they
still have to play. They have their cupcake cupcake game
late in the schedule. They play host to Mercer, then
they go to Oklahoma, and then they close up with Auburn.
So it's not completely out of the round with possibility
that they could lose. They could lose another game, and
if they lose one more then they're out of it
(52:35):
at three losses. I don't three losses just I just
don't think get you in this thing. Certainly because of
the balance this year. I just don't see it. I
just don't see it. All right, nine three seven, five
sixty one seventy. Dick is on the line. Wants to
talk to little college football with us. Dick, Great to
have you on the program this afternoon. What's on your mind?
Speaker 9 (52:58):
Uh, didn't hear much about the Miami Ohio game, just
a little bit on the newspaper this morning. But could
you give us a Rundown.
Speaker 5 (53:07):
I know it was.
Speaker 9 (53:09):
The RedHawks put it to you, to your Bobcats.
Speaker 3 (53:12):
And well they're not my Bobcats. But yeah, yeah, yeah,
I do come on that, Dick.
Speaker 5 (53:20):
It was.
Speaker 3 (53:21):
I'll give Miami a lot of credit. They were the
more physical football team on Saturday, which I knew was
a bit of a concern to Tim Albin and his
coaching staff. They jumped ahead thirty to six, led sixteen
to nothing. Brett Gabert back and playing like Brett Gabbert
can play is certainly a difference maker for Chuck Martin's
football team. Matt Salapek at linebacker I thought was outstanding
(53:44):
on Saturday. Ohio lost its best running back, Tray Tias,
midway into the game. He did not return, so that
affected their ability to run the ball with any sort
of success. Miami was just a better team Saturday, Dick.
I don't think that's an understatement, any stretching the imagination.
Miami was just a better team on Saturday.
Speaker 9 (54:03):
The mac is wide.
Speaker 3 (54:04):
I mean, well, go ahead, go ahead, Dick. I was
gonna say, you have Western Michigan. Yeah, Western Michigan one
at Buffalo, so they're the only unbeating at three and oh.
Then you've got six two and one teams, right and yeah,
and with the league going away from divisions this year. Uh,
Ohio coach Tim Alpen refers to it as tournament time,
(54:27):
which is pretty accurate right now because everybody those six
at two and one and even Western to three and oh,
they're all still in this thing and there's a long
way to go. There's still five very competitive games left
for all these teams. It's going to be a dogfight
down the stretching the MAC.
Speaker 9 (54:41):
All right, well, Mark, keep it up. I really enjoy
uh hearing your broadcast and uh, keep covering the MAC.
It's a great conference. I wish people knew more about it,
you know they, yeah, don't even acknowledge it probably half
the time.
Speaker 3 (54:59):
Yeah, I think the problem is for the MAC, it
gets just swallowed up because of where it's located. I mean,
it's hard to it's hard to get the attention that
you're right, it does deserve. But when everybody is suffocated
by Ohio State, suffocated by the rest of the Big Ten,
it kind of falls out of the realm of interest
(55:20):
for those that cover college football. And you're right, it's
wrong because I'll tell you what, Dick. That was a
great atmosphere Saturday in Oxford. Truemous atmosphere down there on Saturday.
And that's the one thing I'll say, Dick, I'll say
this too that I'll let you make your point. This,
to me is one of the reason why I like
doing these games, because these rivalries aren't going anywhere. Ohio
and Miami a gonna play each other. That's not going anywhere.
(55:43):
The other big games in this league, the Kent State
Akron Wagon Wheel game, the I seventy five Bowling Green
Toledo game, Dick, they're not going anywhere. They're gonna play
each other every single year. You don't see that in
the rest of these leagues. And to me, that's what
makes MAC football special.
Speaker 9 (55:58):
You know what my real concern is about MAC football
is when will these big conferences just say, well, we're
just gonna have a round tournament. We're gonna play each
another the ten games, twelve games, eleven games hour, how
many are in the tournament or in their conference, and
these guys won't be getting the money money games anymore.
Speaker 3 (56:19):
That's that's on the horizon, Dick.
Speaker 9 (56:21):
That's on the horizons those small schools I mean, how
are you don't know, Yeah, how you gonna afford a program?
If you don't have any finances? For the big schools
that pass.
Speaker 3 (56:32):
They can tell you, they're gonna tell you what. What
worries me more is the fact that the schools in
the MAC right now are more almost feeder programs, if
you will, for these Division one schools, because you have
a lot of kids in some of these MAX schools
that are having great years that probably won't be here
next year because Division one schools will come in or
(56:54):
Division one schools, but the Power five schools will come
in with their nil money, their abilities to outspend everybody
else and snatch these kids away. And that's just where
we're at right now. And it's that, to me is
the biggest thing that is of a worry I think
in that regard.
Speaker 9 (57:10):
Oh, Martin from Miami, I really addressed that with his kicker, right, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (57:15):
That's right, that's right. Chuck is one Chuck. Chuck is
one of a kind. I know Chuck very well. He
is one of a kind. Dick. I appreciate you call
do it more often. I appreciate you you do the same.
Take care, Dick, checking in with us today talk a
little mac football. Always appreciate that, and he is the
point about the power for class slash power five schools
(57:38):
kind of breaking off and going their own direction. Uh,
I think that's coming. I do. I think they're just
going to go off and say uh. And a lot
of it too falls back to I think it's a
point Kelly, We've talked about before in this program. But
the way it's currently constituted in college athletics, a school
like let's say Louisiana Monroe have the same say in
(58:01):
legislation that Ohio State does. And that to me, and
I've I've even had people tell me at those upper
levels that's what really really bothers the power five schools
because why should Louisiana Monroe's problems be the same as
Ohio States. Why should they be able to say, well,
you can't do that because that doesn't affect us. But
here's that will be the thing that separates these schools,
(58:24):
I think quicker than anything right now. I think you're uh,
that's just uh. I think it's just kind of where
we're headed with all this right now. So uh, but yeah, dig,
thanks again for the call, and yeah, and you're right
the MAC doesn't get the attention that it deserves, and
I think sometimes to the MAC sometimes it it doesn't
(58:45):
help itself when it when it doesn't win some of
these opportunities at Power five schools. But that's been changing
last couple of years. Ask ask Notre Dame uh Northern
O White when I earned one this year. Toledo's won
some games in the past, those mother MAC schools have
done that so that they need to win games like
that to kind of increase that coverage, if you will. Sure,
(59:07):
And I think that's a part of it as well too,
so but yeah, think again, I appreciate you.
Speaker 4 (59:11):
Yes, well, I just think it's so interesting because these
these mid level programs want to stay competitive, but then
if you beat one of these Power five schools, like
that's the last time you're gonna hear from them. So
it's such a delicate balance in being able to have
these money games and then be competitive. But you know,
you're you're never going to tell your team don't try
(59:33):
to win, like obviously we're gonna go in there and
we're going to try to wipe the floor of these guys.
But if you do, say goodbye to that check next year,
like that, it's just so tough.
Speaker 3 (59:44):
Well, and there are some, I think some aspects of that, Kelly,
which are very interesting to talk about. Because Saturday I
was talking to Steve Baker, the voice of the RedHawks,
prior to the game, and we were talking about Miami's
non conference schedule. They opened it Northwestern, they played to Cincinnati,
and then they went to Notre Dame and I asked,
I asked Steve. I said, yeah, obviously physically that takes
(01:00:07):
a toll on some of these schools. Hey, but mentally,
where is that? What does that do to a team?
And he said, hey, he goes that's a conversation that
Chuck Martin and I have had and he said that.
Chuck Martin said, we just were not in a good
place for a good portion after those three games, because
you get not that they got destroyed in those games.
They didn't win them, and they knew they were a
(01:00:27):
good football team. But to go up to go out
and play those games and lose them, you start to,
you know, all those questions pop up, Hey, maybe we're
not as good as we thought we were. And that's
the negative to play notes. I'll tell you that next year, Ohio,
next year, the Bobcats open up at Rutgers, come home
and host West Virginia next year. West Virginia comes to
(01:00:48):
Athens next year, and then the Bobcats go up arout
thirty three and play out Ohio State next year. So
so yeah, it's okay, yeah, yeah, So again you kind
of find yourself in that same boat all over again. Yeah,
and it's it's an interesting part of where all this
is at right now in college athletics. All right, four
(01:01:09):
fifteen at the time when we come back, we'll go
to the court talk a little basketball. Our friend Dave
Seacote was at the Dayton Xavier exhibition game last night.
We'll get his thoughts on what he saw last night.
I'm sure Dave has some interesting thoughts on some of
this other stuff as well too. Dave's been around college
athletics for a long long time. We'll do all that
still to come as well to Dayton football coach Trevor
Andrews at about four thirty five or so. Also, it's
the press box Fox Sports nine eighty nobody go with.
Speaker 1 (01:01:29):
Name, get on the press box called Marty now at
(01:02:04):
nine three seven by three one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports ninet eighty wn E four.
Speaker 3 (01:02:13):
Nineteen, As we roll on with you here on this
Monday afternoon, it's the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty
W eight. I'm Marty Banniser, and we are glad you're
with us here this afternoon. Kelly b is producing the program,
and she is doing her usual fine job making sure
that this thing stays on the air and we stay
upright and functional. More glad that she's doing a great
job that she does. A couple of fan polls you're
made up for you this afternoon, again asking you today,
(01:02:35):
Bengals is now won two in a row, are you
feeling more confident about the team making the playoffs? Seventy
six percent of you say win the next two and yeah,
that confidence level sores. We're also asking you today what
should the Browns now do a quarterback for the remainder
of the season. What DeShawn Watson done for the year?
Should you start Jamis Winston? Should you go with Dorian
Thompson Robinson who left the game here say with a
finger injury? By the way, should you trade for a
(01:02:56):
quarterback or just play both of the two guys? Four
right now? Just see which one gives you a better
chance to win. How often have we heard that phrasing
from the coaching staff in Cleveland? And right now start
Jamis Winston gets fifty five percent of the vote. So
again both polls with us for about another old twenty
five to thirty minutes or so. All right. Last night
(01:03:17):
at the d Arena, Dayton played its exhibition game, one
of its exhibition games. It was part of the Spotlight,
a multi day event that raises awareness for young adult
mental health and to benefit a number of charities that
work to break the stigma and provide helpful resources for
mental health. Spotlight included a town hall meeting at ud
Arena on October the ninth. There were presentations made during
the game of donations. Dave Security visits with us our
(01:03:39):
basketball analyst, and the game was well, the big part
of all of that last night in terms of why
there were whatever the crowd was last night, Dave, but
this was such a big part of all of this,
and I think this is one of the reasons why
I think everybody likes these type of exhibition games, because
they raised this type of awareness. It's a good thing,
isn't it, No question?
Speaker 9 (01:04:01):
Marty?
Speaker 5 (01:04:01):
I think the way everything was handled yesterday at You
the Arena I thought was terrific. I mean, obviously Anthony
Grant and his wife Chris, you know they've been on
they spearheaded this whole thing and it's been very impressive
to see it. And one reason I wanted to go
to the game was that was probably the most important reason,
just to support Anthony. I had a chance to say
(01:04:22):
lo to win prior to the game, and you know
what he's doing, and I'm sure it's somewhat of a distraction,
but for him right now, knowing what went on in
his last couple of years ago, I think he's more
willing to step up and do it. But I can
tell you, Marty, and you've been to games at You
the Arena, the environment there was unbelievable. I was a
little surprised, obviously it's an exhibition game, but I got
(01:04:44):
there early. I'll have dating a couple of times this
year for my broadcast, so I wanted to see a
little bit of the warm up and all that. But
when I sat down, there was a lady that leaned
over to me. I think she was a sponsor, first
time ever in the arena, and she said is it
always like this here? And I said, ma'am, when your
d basketball is here, this is the way it is.
(01:05:04):
And it was a great tribute to everything. Student section
was great, a lot of emotions they had, you know,
some video tributes and things like that going on as well.
But the impact that it has, hopefully it can help
a few people along the way. But I really thought,
and I think you mentioned something about they have two
exhibitions now Division one Basketball, Marty, and you can make
(01:05:24):
a decision if you do this type of charity event.
Obviously it's open to the public where you can have
a private setting which no one's allowed in, no media,
know nothing. And I think both teams got a lot
out of this game playing in an environment like that.
I mean, there's fourteen thousand people, you're you know, you're,
you're getting ready. That's a regular season type of a
crowd there. So I think it helped both teams.
Speaker 3 (01:05:46):
I think initially, Dave, I've said this before and I
want to get your thoughts on this, and I think
you kind of know where I'm going with this. I
love these things. I think this is a great way
to raise awareness and it's a great way to generate
the the awareness that needs to be done for these
type of situations, the mental health foundations and so forth.
(01:06:08):
But there's a part of me two that says, why
can't they play in a regular season? I can't we
get off of that, off of that, Oh well, it's
not good for our schedule, it's not Come on, you
could play these games in the regular season, can't you?
Speaker 5 (01:06:22):
I think so? And you know that question was posed
to Anthony Grant last night in this postgame press conference.
And you know there's been some conference calls between Ohio State,
Xavier UD and Cincinnati, those war head coaches talking about it.
But logistically that's probably one of the issues, trying to
find the timing of it, where do we play it,
(01:06:43):
the location, things like that. But you know, this is
a long story, his type of history behind UD and
Xavier Musketeers playing on basketball and you know, you can
just feel it last night. I think the extra incentive
last night and the intensity level was the fact that
Xavier was in town. Obvious, So I agree with you,
it would be great during the regular season to see
(01:07:04):
that happen. Obviously, you know, everybody has a different philosophical
stance on it, including the athletic directors, so there's a
lot of people that have to be involved. But Anthony
Grant was very very outfront about it, said, look, it's
on the table, so we're talking about it. So I
think that's a positive thing.
Speaker 3 (01:07:23):
Well, that was one of the things to And again
Dave Secuti, our basketball analyst, joining us for a little
college basketball discussion. Dayton and Xavier played last night at
the UD Arena in one of the exhibition games, and
Xavier wanted ninety eight seventy four. The other part of
that's too Dave, and that conference call you talked about,
and I think you and I have even had this
on air conversation about this. There's some of our broadcasts.
(01:07:44):
Wouldn't it be great? Though? And everybody says, what we
need a location. Well, Nation White Arena is your location
to do this in Columbus. You put Ohio State, you
put Cincinnati, you put Xavier, you put Dayton together, and
you do this like they do in Indiana with the
Crossroads Classic. It makes too much sense, doesn't it.
Speaker 5 (01:08:01):
I mean, well, here's the sense I got from a
couple of answers, Sir Anthony Grant yesterday, Marty and I
think it's on the table. And you know, I heard
the mention of a doubleheader. Obviously that would be a
perfect TV, made for TV doubleheader.
Speaker 3 (01:08:20):
You're not going to play a tournament. You're not going
to play a tournament that I don't think.
Speaker 5 (01:08:25):
Yeah, it's a multi team of better you're just gonna
play two games, you know, three o'clock and seven o'clock
or whatever. But I really think that if they could
get the kind of this mission in terms of the
line on young adult mental health, if they can kind
of tie that in, and I think that to me,
I had a sense that was going to be part
(01:08:46):
of the thing they would want to do. If they
can tie it in. And I'm not talking about exhibition doubleheader.
I'm talking a real regular season doubleheader. But have some
of the proceeds go to that, I think that's that's
a good possibility.
Speaker 3 (01:08:58):
Yeah, And I think that's a yeah. I think that
kind of generates and kind of increases the Uh maybe
moves is downhill a little quicker than it would need
a little bit.
Speaker 5 (01:09:08):
Absolutely, I think.
Speaker 3 (01:09:09):
So no doubt about it. Date security visiting with is
our basketball analysts all right on the court last night,
Let's focus on Dayton zed Key making his public debut
with the Flyers. What'd you see of Dayton last night?
Speaker 5 (01:09:21):
Well, you know, I guess they looked a little out
of sync. To be honest with you, most of the games,
Xavier had complete control of the game. You he scored
the first basket actually was a little left handed move
that zeb Key made. You know, Anthony played with a
lot of players. I think at this point, you know,
they're trying to find different combinations that might work. But
(01:09:43):
my vision was trying to find out what version of
UD basketball it will be this year Marty and and
I think one of the reasons was without a jerk
darn Holmes, that type of player who drew a lot
of attention from opposing teams last year, who would be
the type of player that would step up. Last year
had a lot of complimentary type players, had a great season.
(01:10:05):
But there's got to be a couple guys they're going
to have to step up instead of maybe six to
eight points, they're going to have to be a couple
guys are going to have to chip in at ten
to fourteen points. And last night they really just never
had it, had a difficult time sustaining thing at either
at the offensive end or the defensive end. And Anthony
even mentioned it. You know, he was looking for kind
(01:10:26):
of a defensive identity last night and they just didn't
find it. But let me let me say this, and
I'm going to switch just to Xavier real quick on
you right here, Sean Miller's got a real good basketball team.
I mean, they are very talented, very aggressive, and they
shot it very extremely well. Dayton did not shoot the
ball well at all. They shot twenty one percent from
(01:10:48):
the three point line. They were six for twenty eight,
only forty two percent from the outsetting inside the arc.
So they struggled from that shooting standpoint. But both teams
got a lot out of this. They found us some answers.
I'm sure Anthony Grant got their attention this week here
in the next few days of practice, trying to figure
out where they're going to go from here.
Speaker 3 (01:11:08):
And that's the point of this, isn't it to get
something out of it and to find out because you're
two weeks you're two mondays away from an opener right now.
Speaker 5 (01:11:16):
That's right, yep, two weeks from today. Everybody kind of
kicks it off, and you know, they got Saint Francis,
PA coming in to you the arena, but they got
Aslan I think on Friday or Saturday, another exhibition game
coming up. But here's what I was impressed with with
with Dayton. They had some of their young players come
in and I think in that environment against up a
(01:11:36):
FOURID opponent, for the most part, they played really well.
Male el at E Tang I thought played well. He
only played thirteen minutes, but he was four for six,
had nine points for rebounds. He didn't look overwhelmed, looked
like he belonged there. But as I mentioned Marty, I
think some of these veteran players you know, and Nate
Santos had a decent game overall. John Bennett struggled from
(01:11:58):
outside the arc. Chiefs struggle shooting wise as well. Shooting
is a fickle thing. If you don't shoot it well,
it affects other parts of your game, and I thought
Dayton had a trouble with that sustaining that effort because
of that, and it wasn't because of their effort. I
think both teams played. It was a high level played game,
but Xavier last night was just a better basketball team.
Speaker 3 (01:12:21):
Dave Secuti with US remaining moments. The basketball analyst, we
love to have Day one and talk a little college basketball.
U D and Xavier last night in an exhibition game,
and again the Flyers had one more to go. They'll
take on a pretty good program out of Division two,
the Ashland Eagles later on this week and another exhibition
game to get them ready for the opening of the season.
Speaker 8 (01:12:40):
Day.
Speaker 3 (01:12:40):
We were talking earlier about where college football is these days,
and college basketball obviously it's number two on the list.
I think when you start looking at the sports college
football obviously everything is done to provide football with the
things it needs to do, and that allows other programs
at other levels to do a lot of things from
(01:13:02):
a financial standpoint. But I guess what I'm getting to
right now is there's always you hear this backchatter, and
there's always the conversation seems to spin up every once
in a while that the Power five schools are going
to break off and go to their own direction, mainly
in football. Would that be good or bad for basketball?
Speaker 5 (01:13:20):
Well, I think sooner or later that's probably going to happen.
You're going to see a super conference of fifty or
sixty teams. I would suspect it probably start out on
the football side, just because they have that kind of
wheel in motion a little bit. But I don't like
where the landscape. And I've been very open about this
(01:13:40):
with you and others. I'm very skeptical right now where
college basketball and really in general college athletics is headed. Obviously,
there's a lot of money involved. You know, I always
say this, there's three buckets of money that people are
diving into. Right now, you got your NI collect nil electives.
(01:14:01):
Then next year you're going to have the revenue sharing
if all the lawsuits go through and that moves forward,
and then you got a scholarship bucket of money. And
I don't know where college basketball falls into that, Marty.
I think football is going to get taken care of.
We know that, that's obvious. That is a generating revenue
that all these year cities need right now, especially on
(01:14:22):
the media front with television and radio and everything else.
So where does that leave college basketball? Sure it's going
to be number two, but how is it going to
affect caliber a play? We saw a coach, one of
the great coaches in college basketball stepped down last week,
right you know, Coach Bennett at Virginia and he just said,
I'm not the right guy for this you know, just
(01:14:43):
in he was just I thought he handled it great
and just said I'm not the right guy for this position.
So I got to move on. I got to make
a tough decision. But that's what I worry about a
little bit. College coaches are saying, yeah, I'm making a
lot of money, but it's really do we have all
the priorities in order? And I heard you talk a
little bit about the Mid American Conference, and that's a
conference I would worry about a little bit.
Speaker 8 (01:15:04):
You know, where do they go?
Speaker 5 (01:15:06):
You know, they played great football. It's great. You and
I cover it both at both ends. Now you got
the football end and we'll have basketball shortly. But that's
the challenge right now. What does a conference like the
Mid America Conference, even the Atlantic Ten those what do
they do with their basketball programs that football kind of
pushes to that super conference?
Speaker 3 (01:15:28):
Yeah, and I think that's coming. I think you're one
hundred percent right on that this super conference is just
around the corner. And that does put these group of
five schools, if you will, in a very precarious situation
as to how they I mean, because these schools go
off on their own. I don't know that they're going
to want to play these group of five schools as
I mentioned. As I mentioned earlier, Dave, I mean I
(01:15:50):
remember the Ohio schedule next year at Rutgers West Virginia
than at Ohio State. I mean two of those three
games are money makers and we know why.
Speaker 5 (01:15:57):
Yeah, I didn't know Ohio went to Ohio to Ohio
State next year in football. That's that's you know, obviously
you're going to get a good payday out of it,
and it's a good game for them. But no, I
agree with you, Marty. I just don't from a from
a college the landscape, you know where's it going to go.
And I think the Mid American Conference they're going to survive.
They're going to play good the fall. But understand this,
(01:16:18):
and I heard you mentioned this, I'll touch upon it quickly.
Is you know the NC Double A is going to
have to find a way if they're still around. You
know how they're going to subsidize some of these smaller conferences.
I don't know if you knew this at all, but
the NC Double A subsidizes with funds and revenue for
Division III athletics as well, right, so, you know, are
(01:16:38):
they going to subsidize the Mid Americ Conference and some
of these other you know, kind of mid major type
of conference with some of the big dollars that that
Super Super Pac Conference is going to.
Speaker 8 (01:16:49):
Come away with.
Speaker 5 (01:16:50):
Uh, they probably don't want to do it, but if
you want the whole landscape to survive, you have to
find a way to figure it out.
Speaker 3 (01:16:56):
Absolutely, I agree with one hundred percent. It's an interesting
time as we're headed to. I think probably here in
the next probably here in the next four to five years.
I think it's gonna be a very, very drastic change
and all this. I always appreciate your time, my friend.
Thanks so much for checking in with us talking basketball.
We got a lot of head ups there coming up
in the next couple of months. I appreciate your time.
Speaker 5 (01:17:14):
YEP, we'll talk soon, Thanks Marty.
Speaker 3 (01:17:17):
Dave Secudi, our basketball analyst, is with us. Always good
to hear from Dave. When we come back, we'll switch
back over talking a little college football. You need Flyers
with a big win on the road over the weekend
at Butler twenty one to fourteen head coach Trevor Andrews.
We'll visit with us. We'll talk about his team, which
finds itself right now at five and one and three
and oh when the Pioneer Football League. We'll hear from
coach Andrews when we come back. The press box rolls
(01:17:37):
along on this Monday, Fox Sports nine eighty W and eight.
Speaker 1 (01:18:23):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three, seven by three, one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN eight
back with you on.
Speaker 3 (01:18:36):
This Monday afternoon. It's the press box Fox Sports nine
eighty W. I'm Marty Banister. We are so glad you're
with us here this afternoon as we roll along with
you right up until five o'clock today. And a couple
of moments to block a little Dayton football with head
coach Trevor Andrews. Will do that here in a couple
of moments, Flyers coming off of a big win on
the road over the weekend, going over and beating Butler
twenty one to fourteen and doing so in thrilling fashion.
(01:18:57):
Towards the end, a couple of Monday night games tonight,
the Ravens and Tampa Bay and then the Chargers and
Cardinals meet tonight. So I imagine not many will catch
the Chargers Cardinals game. I like the fact that they
do stagger the start times on those, so that's at
least you'll watch a little bit of one of them.
And then everyone will lose the Chargers Cardinals game because
(01:19:20):
the Ravens Tampa Bay is much better game. So and
certainly in this part of the world, I think we'll
get a pretty good audience with the Ravens in the
AFC North and atop the division right now. So that
will be one of the two games tonight, and again
Chargers Cardinals, that is the other game on tap for
(01:19:40):
this evening as we continue along here on this Monday night.
So Bengals win yesterday being the Browns twenty one to fourteen.
Cincinnati back home this weekend for the Philadelphia Eagles. It'll
have a one o'clock start time. That originally been a
four to twenty five start, but it was flexed out
of the four to twenty five start and moved to
one o'clock. That will be this Sunday in Cincinnati. The
(01:20:02):
Browns are home and they have the Baltimore Ravens coming in.
So that's a your NFL day for all right. Just
talk a little Niversity of Date football. Welcome to the
liveline our friend the head coach at the University of Dayton,
Trevor Andrews coach. First of all, great to have you
with us here on this Monday. Congratulations on the win
on Saturday. Your club's at five and one right now.
Three You know what top the Pineer Football League. I
think a lot to like about your football team. Let's
(01:20:23):
go to the win on Saturday. What stood out for
you about the victory at Butler on Saturday?
Speaker 8 (01:20:30):
Thanks for having us on. Gritty win. We got off
to a nice lead and and then not n no
nice lead, but we forced some turnovers and ended up
up fourteen to six, and then they got a late
drive and tied it up, got the two points conversion,
(01:20:52):
thought we had it stopped, and they get us a
past interference and so we're looking at a tie game
with five minutes left, and Kevin Loco catches a big
swing screen and gets us down to the forty and
we hit a hit him on Hail Mary with eleventh
not Hail Mary. But uh uh ah, I'm losing my mind, man.
(01:21:14):
Uh you're still down. Yeah, you know you're still got
up on the trick play and uh and uh, you know,
I throw it up Brenner and he brings it down
scores it for the game winner. Was an exciting finish
and uh, it was great to see the guys grinted out.
(01:21:34):
You know, we've we've got a lot of young guys
that are playing really well, but uh, they need to
experience schemes like that because composure is so big in
those type of situations.
Speaker 3 (01:21:45):
Absolutely the impressive thing. And looking at the stats, coach,
you got the ball back with five thirty eight left
and you scored with eleven seconds left. You had to
like that. I mean, you ate up. You gave Butler
no time left to do anything with the football.
Speaker 5 (01:21:58):
Loved it.
Speaker 8 (01:21:58):
You know, it was great. We went in knowing and
then that was two good football teams facing each other Saturday,
two good, really good teams in all three phases, and
we knew it was gonna be a four quarter game.
We knew we had to win time of possession. We
knew we had to win the turnover battle to give
ourselves the best chance to win the game. And you know,
(01:22:21):
I think we ended up winning the time of possession.
We had thirty five minutes and we win turnover three
to zero. So the more you look at games, more
games are lost than one, I'm telling you. So you
got to take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.
We were able to do that Saturday against the quality
(01:22:42):
programs on.
Speaker 3 (01:22:43):
The line with us right now. Daton football coach Trevor
Andrews who Flyers winning a thriller on Saturday, knocking off
Butler by the final twenty one to fourteen. Coach Drew
Van Vliet throws three touchdown passes for you, How well
is he playing for you right now?
Speaker 8 (01:22:56):
He's doing a great job. He's growing up right in
front of our eyes. You know, he can spend it.
He can he can throw it, make all the throws,
and it's just a matter of experiencing things and game
situations and you try to put him as many situations
that have the process during practice as you can, but
there's no substitution for doing it in real life. And
(01:23:18):
you know, the nice thing I thought, the biggest growth
I saw with Drew is he scrambled on third down
for first downs and ran it for first downs twice Saturday,
which he hadn't been hadn't done before, So it was
good to see that really keep some drive alives for us,
drives a life force.
Speaker 3 (01:23:36):
Dating with the win twenty one to fourteen on Saturday.
With that part of it, Coach, with the ability to
do that, how much more dangerous, if that's the right term.
Does that make your offense when he can keep plays
alive with his feet like.
Speaker 8 (01:23:48):
That, Absolutely, because you know he's gonna it just puts
the defense a little bit more of a buyd you know,
if they think he can't scramble and run it, then
they can drive more into coverage or just the threat
of him being able to do that. Putting that on film, well,
it should open up some passes for us on third
(01:24:09):
downs especially. But the thing about Drews, he does such
a great job of keeping his eyes downfield, you know,
and if something opens up, he's gonna find it, So
he'll being able to do both of those things becomes
a problem.
Speaker 3 (01:24:23):
You talked a moment ago about your team maturing in
the things that it's doing right now in winning these games.
This is a second straight game, Coach, you've won in
the fourth quarter, the win over Davidson sixteen fourteen. You
get a field goal and the cover behind and win
that one. You went on the road Saturday. From a
growth standpoint, where is your team right now?
Speaker 8 (01:24:43):
No, you know, like I said, it's like they're growing
up before your eyes. I think they've done a great job.
Our veterans that have you know, been in the fire before,
doing a great job of keeping the guys composed. And
we were able to place some young kids last year
and now or in you know, year or two of
getting on the field. So they're doing a nice job.
(01:25:05):
And I think the more times you can grit out
a tough game like that, the more they'll be able
to you know, log back onto that that type of
situation and just keep your mindset. Whether you're up big
or you're down, you're never out of it and you never.
Speaker 9 (01:25:26):
Have enough lead.
Speaker 8 (01:25:28):
You've just got to play every game like it's you know,
it's zero zero, you know, ethicallyiche you know, coach talk,
but it's so true. You know, as soon as you
let your foot off the gas, it's going to be over.
And so you've got to just keep keep your focus,
keep your composure. You know, it was it was we
hit that big play to get down there, and you know,
(01:25:51):
there was probably thirty some seconds left and we're really
right on the cusp of field goal range. It was,
it was we've been setting that play up over the
course of the day, and we you know, had a
che fleef flicker. I couldn't think of the word, you know,
we run the fleeflicker because we've been running the dad
Gone run action off of it all day and and
(01:26:14):
I think in their minds that we're playing for the
field goal, and so they just bite up on it
and we were able to capitalize on that.
Speaker 3 (01:26:23):
Coach, I would think too, at five and one, three
and oh in the league, your defense is giving you
some good let's keeping you in these games and give
you a chance to win these games. How much do
you like on that slide of the ball right now?
Speaker 8 (01:26:33):
The defense is hard to solve our team right now.
I mean, they're they're raked up there in the number
one of them in the conference and up there nationally,
and a lot of statistics playing really well. It's I
I think we're we're playing team defense. And uh, I
think you know, we've played some heavy rushing teams the
(01:26:56):
last couple of weeks and we've we've done a really
good job of knocking them, you know, down off their
what they've been averaging our opponents and keeping points off
the board. But you know, at the end of the day,
you know, you hold teams down to fourteen points or less,
you really like your your chances doing the football game,
and they've been doing it. When they get put in
(01:27:17):
bad situations, they're they're not panicking and not pointing fingers.
They're viewing it as an opportunity to swing the momentum
back with a stop or or hold them to a
field goal, and they've been doing a good job of that.
Speaker 3 (01:27:29):
Coach. As we wrap up our conversation back home again
on Saturday, more Head State comes in, What about the
US What impresses you there?
Speaker 8 (01:27:37):
Well, I've always liked their quarterback. I thought he was
a really good player last year, Craven's he does a
nice job. He's a threat to run it and throw it.
You know, he was out for a couple of weeks early,
but he's been back since the league play. And I
think they've got a new coaching staff down there. We've
never faced them before, so we face some of the
(01:27:59):
players not in their current schemes. So we're just you know,
getting through through that right now and trying to figure
out what our best approach is going to be for
these guys. But last year against them, you know, I
felt like you go into the game and we just
we turned it over in the red zone twice early
(01:28:19):
and let it get away from us. And you know,
I think we've got these guys coming up to our
place now and a great, great opportunity to avenge last
year's loss and just and just keep the focus at
one game at a time and Morehead States next and
(01:28:40):
looking forward to this challenge.
Speaker 3 (01:28:42):
Coach, as always, I appreciate your time. Congratulations on the win,
and hopefully we'll get a chance to talk to you
before the season wraps up a little bit later on.
Thanks for your time this afternoon.
Speaker 8 (01:28:50):
Really appreciate it absolutely anytime. Appreciate you.
Speaker 5 (01:28:53):
Thanks so much.
Speaker 3 (01:28:53):
I Dake care Trevor Andrews, the head football coach at
dating back to back last minute wins for the Flyers
and they're a top the Piner Football League now at
three and ozero and five and one on the season
with Morehead State coming to Welcome Stadium on Saturday afternoon
four forty nine. As we continue along, well date, you
went where our fan poles stand and get you ready
for a big night of Monday night football with two
(01:29:14):
games coming up. It's the press box, Fox Sports nine
eighty w NA.
Speaker 1 (01:29:49):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three, seven by three, one, six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports.
Speaker 3 (01:30:02):
And again we thank Dayton football coach Trevor Andrews for
visiting with US flyers. With a big win on the
road on Saturday as they win at Butler. By the
final of twenty one fourteen, let's update you on where
our fan poles stand. With a couple of minutes left,
one of them has gone final. We asked you today,
with the Bengals now having won two in a row,
are you feeling more confident about them making the playoffs?
Seventy seven percent of you who voted said, let's see
(01:30:25):
if they win the next two and then I'll feel
very confident about where they stand. Oh to three is
way too much to overcome, getting twenty three percent of
the vote. No one voted for yes, they are back.
They are back, So I don't know if obviously the
last two wins really haven't impressed some of those folks
as well too. And we also asked you, was well
two about the Browns, what should they do a quarterback
for the remainder of the season with the Shan Watson
(01:30:46):
done for the year. Should they start Jameis Winston, go
with Dorian Thompson Robinson. Should they trade for a quarterback,
or just maybe just try and play both of them
for a while and see which one is the better
of the two, and right now start Jamis Winston. Getting
fifty five percent of the vote this afternoon, we did
get one response on that poll, and that's from our
friend the Neuge. I didn't watch the game yesterday, but
(01:31:07):
for the rest of the fans that will watch the
rest of the games this year, I just think the
Browns should just start Winston and draft a quarterback and
start over again. The only thing I'm looking forward to
right now is the new stadium in three or four years.
So that's the thing. From a standpoint right now, here
you are, and there's no way anybody I think associated
with this franchise thought or fan base thought one and
(01:31:30):
six is where they would be right now. No one
thought the Bengals would be sitting at three and four
right now. I just don't think any edge of that
or any side of the state of Ohio felt that
way about their two football teams. But that's where we're at,
and obviously Cincinnati has a little bit better, well a
little more. There is some light at the end of
the tunnel. I think the light is dim, but it's
(01:31:52):
still there. For the Browns, well, we know where they're
at right now, so you have to as an organization
which also leases some interesting questions. Nearing November thirtieth or
November fifth, I should say, trade deadline day, what do
you do with some of these guys? And they've got again,
they got a truckload of free agents as well too,
guys whose contracts are up, So there are going to
be some interesting decisions to be made, and I would
(01:32:14):
imagine there's those discussions are going on right now. So
it is it is going to be very very interesting
to watch the next few weeks for the Browns again
because they have the Ravens coming in on Sunday. The Bengals, well,
(01:32:35):
they're still trying to figure out a playoff berth right now.
They still have that opportunity, so that possibility is there
as well too. So those things ahead for both of
these teams right now, so we'll keep certainly it's going
to be an interesting storyline over the next couple of
weeks for both of these football teams. As we move
ahead here for the next couple of weeks, again, a
(01:32:55):
couple of games tonight Ravens and Tampa Bay Chargers and
Cardinals tonight, and again, uh, that's seven fifteen or so,
I think is when everything gets underway for Monday night.
Football World Series is set as the Dodgers and Yankees
will meet. Game one will be Friday night in Los Angeles,
so we will likely have November baseball. Oh, let's hope
it doesn't get to that, but probably probably series series
(01:33:19):
would go Yeah, it's a series goes seven. I think
it does stretch into November. So I just despise that
so insane. Really, baseball should be wrapped up I mean,
baseball should really be wrapping up right now. It should
You're not the Halloween. You should should be wrapping it up,
right I should be playing baseball and Halloween just shouldn't
do it. But what do I know? No one, no
one asked me about.
Speaker 4 (01:33:39):
Schedules things on those lines, so they should Marty, No.
Speaker 3 (01:33:43):
That would just make too much sense. Everything would everything
would start at seven o'clock it would all be on
Eastern time.
Speaker 4 (01:33:51):
Yeah, everything's on Eastern time.
Speaker 3 (01:33:52):
Yeah, that's right. The West coast can just forget about it.
They're gonna have to play on our on our side
of things. That's the way we like all of this
so and that's the way it should be. The rest
of the world should go on. How those of us
who live in the Eastern time zone survived, that's the way.
That's just the way that they ought to be. Uh
yeah again, I know that's never going to happen. Later
on in a week on the show, on Wednesday, Matt
(01:34:14):
Codeney will visit with us from the Nebraska Football Radio Network.
We'll get a preview of the corn Huskers who will
come to Ohio Stadium on Saturday to face Ohio State.
How about what Indiana did to them over in Bloomington,
I mean, fifty six to seven. Indiana's rolling right along.
The Hoosiers are seven and o. And there are a
lot of people who will tell you Curtis Rourca, we
were talking about the mac he was at Ohio last year.
(01:34:35):
Was Indiana starting quarterback having a fantastic season. There are
a lot of people who tell you this is a
good Indiana team. Yeah, you don't often hear that in football. Now,
they still have to come to Columbus in a few
weeks and they could very well roll in the Columbus undefeated.
And when they do, that certainly will be I mean
because right now, if they're in the Mix ten, in
(01:34:57):
the Big Ten championship game, in the college football playoffs,
a large berth they're right there in the thick of it.
Because as we talked about earlier, Michigan and Washington certainly
aren't going to make it this year. Alabama's kind of
teetering on the brink of being eliminated. So it's it's
going to be an interesting run.
Speaker 4 (01:35:15):
Here, wild, wild season of college football.
Speaker 3 (01:35:19):
And we all thought it would just be the same
fourteen old Yeah. Wow, that'll do Yeah, that'll do it.
For today's program, we'll talk to you tomorrow from three
to five. We'll have some things lined up for you,
as we always do, and then we're back on Wednesday.
Was he with a Matt Cotney And then on Thursday,
Tim Acorn, the voice of the Cleveland Cavaliers, will join us.
We'll recap the gaps. He's an opener on Wednesday at
(01:35:40):
Toronto that'll o for the program. Thanks for being with saffnoon,
Thanks to Trevor Andrews. Thanks to day Secruitie for joining us.
More of the press Box comes up tomorrow three to
five right here, Fox Sports nine eighty W A.
