Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the press box with Marty Banister, the latest
on all local sports from Wright State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine three seven by three one
six ' one seven zero the press Box on Fox
Sports nine eighty WNA.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Not our best football in the area. We have obviously
a great, great, great test ahead of us, but we're
excited to move forward. Those are the comments of Nebraska
at football coach Matt Ruhle as his corn Huskers who
got boat raced in Bloomington, Indiana over the weekend, when
I'll try their luck in Columbus this weekend. Welcome to
the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty w own me

(00:46):
back with you after a day off on Tuesday. We're
glad to be with you. We have a lot to
get into on the program this afternoon, and we have
a lot to talk about coming up in the program
a little bit later on today, our friend Matt Codney
from the Nebraska Football Radio Network will visit with us
give us a preview of those corn Huskers who will
invade Ohio Stadium on Saturday. Also this hour, there's a
there are a couple of huge, huge high school football

(01:08):
games coming up in our area on Friday night, and
one of them takes place in the Miami Valley League.
That's where Xenia and Tip A Canoe will get together.
Both are undefeated, both lead their respective divisions in the
Miami Valley League, and it just so happens that to
be that they play each other on Friday Night. You
couldn't ask for better scheduling if you're in the Miami

(01:29):
Valley League. Well done MVL. Obviously it wasn't done on purpose,
but the two that it sure did, the two teams
that lead their respective divisions. So it is the de
facto conference championship game. I don't think there's any question
about that, and it should be a fun We're gonna
hear from both head coaches. Matt Burke Biker, the head
coach at Tip City, and we're also going to hear
from Maurice Holden, the head coach at Genius. We have
those coming up for you during the programs today. Kelly

(01:51):
B's back alongside for the ride today. I'd give worth
you right up until five o'clock. So that's what we
have on tap for you this afternoon, so a lot
to get into. I mentioned the Hip Xenior game. That's
one of the big games in the area a little
further to the north, and we're working to get something
lined up to preview this one as well too. Maryon
Local and Cold Water see each other on Friday night.

(02:12):
Wow wow, I mean, not a better way to wrap
up the high school football season of the regular season,
and that's where we're at. O. By the way, it's
week ten of the high school football season. Yeah, this
is it. Now we go to the playoffs after this
and they take place. Yeah, just flown by too fast.
But that's what we have coming up for tomorrow on
the program, the return of the Magnificent Seven, where we

(02:34):
will pick our top seven NFL teams. And I think
that's going to be a very interesting Magnificent seven to
look at tomorrow because some of the recent happenings today
in the league with the trade deadline approaching. As a
Bengals fan, and again, I know we're teetering on the
brink of not playing a postseason game, but I mean
the Kansasity Chiefs just went out and got DeAndre Hopkins.

(02:57):
I mean you you just shake your head Okay, I
guess they address their biggest weakness right now and have
decided to get Patrick Mahomes as if he needs any
more help. But but I think maybe if you look
at it, what is he like five touchdowns, seven interceptions

(03:17):
something like that this season?

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Is he's even worse than that? Actually, but yeah, he's
got more interceptions than touchdowns. Second time in history that
that that a quarterback has had a winning record with this,
with those sort of stats, That's what.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
I was going to say. They're just strolling along, just
just beating everybody that they play.

Speaker 4 (03:38):
This is it.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
I mean, the Chiefs are the definition of a complimentary
football team because no matter who is struggling during a game,
the other parts, the either the special teams. We've seen
the Chief special teams this year help secure victories. It's

(03:59):
not even just the offense and the defense. Every all
three phases of the game. They they work together. I don't.
I mean, I'm envious Week number two.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Against the Week number two against the Bengals. Yeah, I
mean they hung on to win that one. They had
no business winning that game, but they did at any rate.
So we'll do that tomorrow. Magnificent seven also tonight exactly.
Also tonight, the Cleveland Cavaliers open up their run through
the NBA regular season tomorrow. In the program the voice
of the Cavaliers on a radio, Tim Alcorn, will visit

(04:28):
with us Awesome and give us a look back at
tonight's season opener. Love times with that he's the best.
With that in mind, we have a couple of fan
polls up for you today. One deals with the NBA.
The NBA regular season is underway, so we thought we
would ask you today watch your level of interest, none whatsoever.
Some I'll watch on occasion, I watch as much as

(04:49):
I can, or I'll watch when the playoffs start, and
right now, none whatsoever. Seventy five percent of the vote.
But it's still it's October the twenty sixth. I think
everybody is still or October of the twenty third, I
put three days ahead of the schedule, October twenty third.
I think people are still football detached from everything else.

(05:09):
I mean it's football that everything else is kind of
off to the side a little bit. So I can't
think that's where we're at with that. Also today we're
asking you along the lines of the NFL, what's the
biggest surprise team as far as winning record wise in
the NFL? Right now? Is it the Kelly B beloved
Washington Commanders, Is it the Minnesota Vikings? Or I would

(05:30):
I throw the Pittsburgh Steelers into that mix right now?
I thought they would be I thought the Steelers would
be okay. I didn't think they'd be five and two
through seven games. No, So those are your three choices
right now, and so far, Washington getting all the votes.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yeah, we listen. I'm I uh, that's where my vote
would go as well. I'm I'm more surprised probably than
people who are not fans of Washington right and well,
we all are.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
I think we all. I think we all kind of
keep waiting for Sam Darnald to become Sam Darnold again
in Minnesota.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Thousand solve that problem one thousands.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Far, it hasn't happened yet. So interesting news coming out
of Cleveland today. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has announced that
he will hand off play calling duties to offensive coordinator
Ken Dorsey. And also the Browns are going to start
Jameis Winston on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. The quote
from Jameis Winston. He said the first four letters of

(06:26):
my name spell wins. Okay, Well he meant his last name, yeah,
and so he didn't. He wasn't. He didn't get really
clear on that. So that had a lot of people. Well,
wait a minute, the first four letters of your name
are J, A, M. E.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
I thought the same thing immediately, and then I was like, oh,
he must mean his last name.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
He maybe I had to have meant his last name. Yeah,
But I get what he's saying, and technically he's not wrong. Yeah,
he just didn't clarify first or last name.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
I I Jameis Winston is such a character, and when
he retires, I really look forward to his run on
TV or movies. I don't know. He probably could do
anything he wants. He's a very entertaining guy. But I
think that's real cute. But we've seen you play for
several years now, Jamis, and we we're gonna need you

(07:15):
to keep those turnovers in check and you know, be
a good team locker room guy. But yeah, we want
to see the wins on the field. We don't care
about the back of that jersey. I'm not gonna lie
to you last name.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yeah, I'll be very interested to see how they play
on Sunday, they be in Cleveland. It's Baltimore coming in.
The Ravens. We weren't with you yesterday, but they just
stampede their way past Tampa. Man Derrick Henry's found the
fountain of youth. I mean, he's only thirty, but I
mean and they're using him the right way, the perfect

(07:53):
way at that stage of his career. He doesn't get
very many carries in the first half, doesn't need in
the second half, rolls around and they need him to
snap off fifty sixty seventy eighty yard runs. He's right
there doing it.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
You win it.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Man to the credit to the as Browns fans call
them the dirty birds. Yeah, the Ravens so, but they're
doing it the right way, and that's the way you
have to use a guy like that.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Yeah, shout out to that coaching staff because I mean,
I couldn't have said it better. It's the perfect use
for him. And it's literally what the Ravens were weak
at before he got there, closing out games games that
they are winning handily. And then now you have to
trust Lamar with the ball in the in the last

(08:36):
moments of the game. No, you don't.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
They're a guy named Mark Henry. That's a little dicey
at times to trust Lamar with the ball at the
end of games. It has mean he's not Sometimes you
go what is he doing? But at any rate, they're
doing that the right way. They were very impressive on
Monday night and beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There was

(08:59):
an interesting story that came out to surrounding the other
game on Monday night, the Arizona LA Chargers game on
Monday Night out in Phoenix Glendale Stadium, were Arizona plays
the way it is constructed at field level. There are
seats at field level, as in you go behind the

(09:21):
benches and there are seats, and there are luxury suites
at that level. It's the same way at Jerry World
at A and TT Stadium in Texas. There are people
who spend whatever amount of money it is to sit
in those luxury suites, but you can't see the field
because the players are right in front of the benches
are right there. So in Arizona on Monday night, the
folks who run the Cardinals decided that one way to

(09:45):
help increase the way for fans who have those seats
to view the game would be to put the Cardinals
cheerleaders in a locker room during the game itself and
only bring them out when it was time for them
to perform. Well, that has generated so much consternation through
at the Cardinals organization for the cheerleaders only coming out

(10:08):
onto the field when they were supposed to do their
routine instead of being on the sidelines as is the
case most everywhere else. So there's been significant blowback about
that out in Arizona, which also that's what you have
to worry about attit.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
Yeah, it's it's funny. I feel like the Cardinals have
other issues. For sure.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
They did win the game on Monday. They did, they
take off the Michigan Chargers.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
So.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
Yeah, but still it's just it's just funny the thing
that the things that get people so fired up. Well,
they're apparently very up in arms about that out in
Phoenix that the Cardinals cheerleaders weren't allowed on the field.
So there were quotes social media from some parents who
were saying, well, we drove all this way to see
the cheerleaders. Did you really drive all that way just
to see the cheerleaders? I believe I'm not. I'm not.

(10:56):
Don't misnerstand what I'm saying about this. That's why you
three hours was to watch the cheerleaders perform. I'm sorry.
I have a tough time understanding that while they are
part of the game, they're not the biggest part of
the game.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
Not even the next biggest part of the game.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
Well, no, they're not so, but it just I tickled that.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
People even noticed. I've been to several games and I there,
I do remember, like if I really recall in my
mind the cheerleaders, but I don't think once the game started.
If you had if you had been like Kelly, for
all the money in the world, where are the cheerleaders,
I couldn't tell you.

Speaker 2 (11:41):
I wouldn't have paid a whole attention.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
I could not have told you. So that's very interesting.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
And like I said, it's they are part of the
atmosphere and a part of and they work hard to
get I guess their routines ready and everything. I'm not
taking anything away from them for that, but I just
found that interesting that that was the big, the big
thing that had a lot of people all fired up
about all that from Monday night. So, at any rate,

(12:06):
World Series still a couple of days away. Speaking of
forgetting about things baseball, you have to wait a week
start the series now after both series ended over the weekend,
Dodgers Yankees will open up on Friday night. I know
a lot of people aren't excited about this. I actually
kind of am. I think it's too It's baseball tradition.
These are baseball royalty franchises, Dodgers, Yankees. And again for

(12:31):
everybody who says, wow, it's only the teams that spend
the most money to win the World Series and get
to the World Series, well that's not necessarily true. It's
the first time the Yankees have been there since two
thousand and nine, and the Dodgers, I mean they've been
there four times in the last seven years. The only
year they won it was during the COVID year. So
last year was Arizona, Texas. We've had other Worlds. We've
had Kansas City in the World Series within the last

(12:53):
seven to ten years. Yeah, there is an obvious difference
baseball as far as who can spend who has the
most money to bend, But a lot of it comes
to spending it the right way, doesn't it. And we'll see,
So let's see. Other than that, we mentioned the Cavaliers.
They're at Toronto tonight, and again Tim Alkhorn visits with

(13:14):
us tomorrow to talk about that. Other than that, that
is pretty much what is going on here on this Wednesday.
Do you realize we are two almost exactly two weeks
away from election day?

Speaker 4 (13:26):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (13:26):
Remember the fifth Gosh, I I guess you know what
I want to talk about because we kind of we
kind of glossed over this. Do we think Kevin Stefanski
calling the plays was part of the Browns issues? Was
that really the issue? I mean, maybe he's trying to
do like a Mia Kolpa, but I did not. I

(13:49):
don't think I had a problem with the play calls.
It was the execution.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
The timing of it is very interesting and he was
asked about that today in his press conference about but
the fact that this decision has now been made, but
it wasn't being it wasn't made beforehand, when maybe it
would have mattered a little more. I don't know if
that's a fair way to say it. I've talked to
guys who who've coached football. I've never talked to a

(14:16):
professional coach about this, but other guys that I know
that coach football, and some of them have told me,
trying to call plays and manage a game at the
same time is one of the toughest things to do,
and especially when your team is struggling, as that one
has been. That's a hard hustle, it really is. And

(14:38):
that's why, like Zach Taylor and Cincinnati, I wish he
would get rid of calling a play. Yeah, I mean
I just think that, Yeah, worry about everything else you
have to worry about. That's why you have an offensive coordinator.
That's why you have Dan Pitcher, That's why you have
Ken Dorsey, That's why you and I get it. It's
a it's an ego thing and they all think, hey,
well I'm I'm the coach, I can call them, can

(15:00):
do all these things. Well, but sometimes, I mean Ryan
Day has learned at Ohio State you can't do you
can't do that all the time. You've got to You've
got to trust your coaches and kind of shuffle some
of that over. I think that's a very interesting part
of all that as well too. Browns, by the way,
have signed Bailey Zappi off the Kansas City practice squad. Well,

(15:21):
he'd beat Cleveland a couple of years ago when he
was with New England.

Speaker 3 (15:23):
It's true, It's true.

Speaker 5 (15:24):
I just Bailey Zappy back in the league.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
That's what we needed.

Speaker 2 (15:30):
That's what the NFL names Kansas City under practice squad.
Bailey's happy. Both Geno Stone and Orlando Brown Junior have
been practicing for the Bengals. Both went down with injuries
on Sunday in the Browns game. Uh, genostone not one
hundred percent as far as his activity in practice. Orlando
Brown did go through some white workouts. Head coach Zach
Taylor saying probably game time decisions listening and probably both

(15:52):
as questionable, which is allows him to play. And that'll
be on Sunday when the Bengals host Philadelphia. When we
come back, we'll preview the big high schol football game
in our area. Tip and Xenia will get that started
for you. Let me come back. Press box rolls right
along with you here on this Wednesday, Fox Sports nine
eighty w ol the.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
Name get on the press box called Marty now at
nine to three, seven by three, one six, one seven
zero the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty wn.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
Eighty Welcome back to the press box here on Fox
Sports nine eighty WNE. We are closing in on a
big Friday night of high school football, week number ten
of the high school football season, hard to believe in
the big game in our area coming up on Friday night,
take place in the Miami Valley League where Xenia and
Tip get together with the championship in the Miami Valley
League on the line and with us right now is

(16:49):
the head coach at Tip, Matt burg Boker. His team
has run the table to this juncture of the season
and they get said to take on equally unbeaten Xenia. Coach.
I'll talk to you about Xenia and all that surrounds
this game coming up on Friday. First of all, I
appreciate your time. What has this season been like to
reach week number ten? Unbeat What has been like for
you for your program?

Speaker 4 (17:08):
I'll tell you it's huge for our program. We graduated
twenty two seniors the last two years, so we've had
a lot of turnover here. But I think what we
have seen is the culture of our program where each
senior class they don't want to be the one that
lets it down. They want to keep this moving in
the right direction. We started the season with so many

(17:30):
question marks. We started new eleven new guys. Defensively, we
had to replace our quarterback, we had to replace three
offensive linemen, we had to find a new running back,
we had to find some new receivers. And these kids
have answered every question that we've had and they have
done an outstanding job. And the best thing about it
right now, we're playing our best football right now. So

(17:50):
we're going into Week ten. We're a little banged up,
but what team isn't banged up come Week ten? But
you know what, We've had some injuries throughout the year
and it's next man up for a lot and that's
what these guys came in with. Again, we had a
ton of questions at the beginning of the year, but
all those questions have been answered. And our kids, they're
exciting to watch. They're fun to watch. We play hard.

(18:12):
Teams are going to be a lot bigger than we
are when we step out on the field. That's irrelevant,
that's indifferent. The one thing you do notice about us
is our kids play hard and they leave it all
out on the field. When you do that, you got
a chance, and we've had our chances.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
Absolutely. Coach, you mentioned a moment ago the culture. And
I think sometimes people look at that and they say, well,
that's coach speak, but it's not, isn't. I mean, there's
a lot to that, And you just said it. When
you lose the type of seniors that you lost them
last year, here you are the year after that, Week
ten playing for an unbeaten regular season, that league championship.
That does mean a lot, doesn't it.

Speaker 4 (18:43):
It does, And I know you're right it is coach speak,
but our kids live it. It's what you do and
how you do it. That's our culture, and our kids
understand what it takes to be successful. Here. Again, we're
not the biggest team on the field on Friday nights,
we will be the hardest playing team. How do you
do that. It's that preparation from Saturday to Thursday that's

(19:07):
going to give you that opportunity, and it's the off
season workouts, it's, you know, just how we do things.
Our kids are completely bought into what we do. And
when you got everybody on the same page, you've got
a really good chance of being successful. But then again, too,
your culture's got to be led by the seniors. And again,
these seniors this year as sophomores we were in the

(19:29):
state semi finals as juniors, we're in the state regional
semi final. They've they've seen success. They know what it
takes and what it took to get to those points.
But then again, now you know where we're at the
regional semi finals. Isn't good enough around here anymore? They
want they want to be practicing on Thanksgiving, they want

(19:52):
to be practicing the week after, and we know what
that would be. But again, those are our goals. But
these guys have done a great job of what do
you have to do today to get to those goals?
And three are you disciplined to do those things to
get to our goals? And those guys have been able
to answer two and three with a yes, and we

(20:14):
can do this.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
It's not like it puts any extra pressure on a
head coach. Does it expectations around the program? It makes It.

Speaker 4 (20:25):
Absolutely does. And it's great when you're in the locker
room and our our varsity teams in the same locker
room as a freshman. And it's great when you hear
a varsity kid come up when a freshman does something
and they say, hey, we don't do that here. That's
not how we do it. Man, that's music to my
ears because they get it. And you know, they're not

(20:47):
ridiculing the freshmen. They're not you know, pointing them out.
They're just letting them know, Hey, this isn't how we
do it here. These guys that are seniors, now we're
in the same boat. When they were freshmen and sophomores.
You know, they did some of those things that you're
just not supposed to do and they got correct and
now it's their turn to step into those shoes. And
these guys have done an outstanding job with it. And

(21:10):
again we've got we got twenty one seniors this year,
and it's just we're gonna lose another great class. But
again it's just it's hard to build it, but it's
even harder to keep it there. But when you have
kids like we have here, it makes that harder a
lot more enjoyable.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
He's the head coach at Tip of Canoe, Matt Burkbaker,
visiting with us here. His team gets set to take
on Zenia on Friday night, with the Miami High League
championship up for grabs. Tip leads the Miami Division, Xenia
leads the Valley Division. Both are unbeaten coach. When you
went into the season, you talked about the type of
losses that you had personnel wives from last year. Was
there a game early on where you kind of went,
all right, we might be able to do what we

(21:48):
thought we could do going into the season.

Speaker 4 (21:51):
Yeah. Week one we opened, We opened with Belbrau. We
don't we don't have the philosophy of scheduling a Week
one game that we know we're going to win. We
played Bellbrook ten times and we go five and five. Hey,
we're happy with that because they are a very good
football team. Week one we came out and again we

(22:11):
had all those questions. We were able to win twenty
eight to seven, and us coaches we come back here
in the locker room and we're sitting in the coach's
office afterwards, and we're all kind of looking at each
other like did that just happen? Like did we just
do what we did? You know for those two and
a half hours, and then you know, it's just kind
of snowballed from there, and again it all goes back

(22:34):
to the preparation. You know, I always I've got the quote,
you know, the Bear Bryan quote. It's not the will
to win that matters. Everybody's got that, but it's the
will to prepare to win that matters. And these guys
are doing a great job with preparing and each week
they'd just gotten better. Like I said, we started eleven
new guys on defense. Now, some of those starters did

(22:56):
get quite a bit of time last year, but they
technically weren't started. But you know, when you get into
that role where there's that not that guy in front
of you and then you get to come in, now
you are the guy. These guys are. These guys have
been ready to do that. And then offensively, like I said,
it all starts up front, and we had to replace
three offensive linemen, and our offensive lines played outstanding. I

(23:19):
think we've given up two or three quarterback sacks and
nine games. You know that's and we throw We've thrown
the ball one hundred and ninety two times. It's not
like we don't throw the ball. We throw the ball
a lot. And and again another huge question mark was
our quarterback. We've we've lost a senior quarterback the last
two years. So we have the sophomore quarterback Lark and
Thomas that right now. In nine games as twenty nine

(23:43):
touchdown passes. You know, obviously that's a question mark coming
into your season when you when you lose you know,
starters from the last two years and you're gonna you're
gonna go with the sophomore. But Larkin's done an outstanding
job of managing games and just taking what teams are
getting him and shoot, his stats speak for themselves. He's
trolling for almost nineteen hundred yards twenty nine touchdowns. Obviously

(24:08):
he's making some great decisions back here, but he wouldn't
be able to do that if he didn't have the
time and then two if he didn't have the receivers
out there to do it. Plus we've got a pretty
good running team too, so it's kind of picked your poison.
Are you going to stop our run game or are
you going to stop our passing game? And then you know,
if this happens, then we're going to do this. If

(24:28):
this happens, then we're going to do that. So we've
got to have an answer to what teams teams are
able to do to us and then boom, we can
go do what we want to do.

Speaker 2 (24:37):
And obviously on the defensive side of the ball, you
have done that this year. I mean, only two teams
have scored in double figures against you. You've had one
to two shutouts, You've been dominated on that side of
the football, and you talked about the type of guys
you have coming back. Is that your best side of
the ball or are you pretty balance football team?

Speaker 4 (24:55):
We're a balanced football team. And yeah, our defense, it's
our offense in some great situations. But then again, our
offense puts our defense in some great situations when when
we are able to get a two or three touchdown lead,
we can maybe be a little more aggressive, or we
can get back into our bend don't break defense. So
obviously those two things work hand in hand. But I'm

(25:18):
also gonna you know, I guess I'm the special teams
coordinator too, so I got to get props to our
special teams. Our special teams has been outstanding. We've had
a couple of blocks on ponts and and field goals.
We've we've been able to on kickoffs recover six or
seven kickoffs for on fumbles. Our kickoff team does a

(25:39):
great job getting downfield. Our punt team, we've only punted
nine times in nine games. So I guess I don't
know if our punt team's really good or if they're
really bad because we've don't done it nine times. But
still that's fine with me. I don't want to find out.
We can we can find out next year or something,
but I want to I want to be able to
keep doing so. Our special teams has put our offense

(26:01):
in great positions. Our special teams has covered up some
maybe some deficiencies we've had with our defense because they've
played some great special teams. So again, all of them
work hand in hand. We're not so dependent on our
defense to where we're just going to play a conservative
offensively because we know our defense is going to stop them. No,
we're going to be aggressive. There's going to be some

(26:22):
series where we take forty seconds off the clock and
our defense has to go back out there because we
want to play with tempo, we want to play fast.
But then again there's going to be some other times,
you know, but our defense knows that we may only
get a rest for two minutes and then we've got
to go play defense again, or you know, we get
a rest for this long because our offense is you know,
has the ball for for fifteen minutes. So again, they

(26:45):
all work hand in hand, and it's just you know,
we have a turnover. Okay, what a great opportunity for
us to have a little adversity and go out there
and play. It's all. You know, you've got to have
a perspective, got to you've got to have a mindset.
You don't like your perspective then changing, Yes, we don't
like your mindset, well, you control it changing and our
kids are again, our kids have done a great job
with that.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
On the defensive side of things. Going to Friday night
against maybe one of the top running backs certainly in
our area, maybe in the state of Ohio, and Dante White,
the type of numbers he's put up this season, uh,
leads the way for Xenia. Is this your biggest challenge
for your defense that you face this season on Friday?

Speaker 4 (27:20):
Oh? Absolutely, because Xenia, Xenia is so well coached and
they they just you know, obviously they're running backs probably
the best. And I'm gonna say he's one of the
best in the state. I haven't seen everybody, but I'm
gonna go ahead and declare that. So they've got that.
But then they can run these stink and RPOs and

(27:40):
you know, it's just they're just hard to defend. We've
got to the key to Friday Night. We have to
win first down. We gotta win first down. Saying that
we've got to we've got to hold him to less
than three yards on first down, because then I've been
an offensive coordinator before. You know, second and eight, second
and nine is a whole heck of a lot harder

(28:00):
to call than second and five, second and four, because
then you still got your whole playbook. So we got
to win first down, and then we've got to change
our mindset and go win second down. We've got to
get them in positions they don't want to be. They
don't want to be in third and long, they don't
want because their offense is based off that run game.
So obviously we're focused on the run game. But then

(28:22):
you look and they've got a four year starter at
quarterback that's going to have the ball in his hands
every play. And he's not a four year starter because
they don't have any other quarterbacks. He's a four year
starter because he's a dang good quarterback. And they've got
the they've got the threats outside to throw the ball.
So it's not like we're going to be able to
put nine guys in the box and just say, hey,
you two go play man on those wide receivers. No. There,

(28:44):
they can throw the ball. They're effective throwing the ball.
So now that's where we got to put them in
those situations where they're third and long and hey, we
can go drop a few extra guys back in coverage
because we know they're going to throw the ball and
we don't have to stack the box. So first downs
to be huge for us.

Speaker 2 (29:01):
Absolutely. Coach, we wrap up our conversation, these type of
weeks were fun me As you said, you've been deep
into the playoffs. You know what that's like. You know
you're going to the playoffs again this year. You know
there's a week eleven and probably more than that for
your football team. But is there a way to put
into perspective what this is like for our coaching staff,
for the kids, for the community. It's a fun week
to be involved in high school football, isn't it?

Speaker 4 (29:23):
Oh? This is this is a blast. I'll tell you.
Our coaches we meet Sunday morning and do our scouting report,
and this was the longest meeting we've had all year.
But the meetings seemed like it took twenty minutes, and
then after the meeting's over with just you know, texting
back and forth when something comes up when we're watching
film or something. These weeks are so and then it's like,

(29:46):
you can't wait till Monday afternoon to do our scouting
reports because you can't. That's when we start the preparation.
And it is fun because we've had some weeks that
you know exactly what's going to happen on Friday night,
you know the result that's going to happen on Friday night,
and it's those you try not to you know, you

(30:08):
try not to take it all that stuff because you
want we're habits. There are creatures of habits, so we
want to stay in our routines and all that stuff.
But this week, man, like just the last two days
at practice, just the energy we've had and the focus
and then you know, Monday's practice was a little rough
because we're getting the game plan on Tuesdays. Today it

(30:29):
was a good practice, it was a really good practice.
So obviously we got to keep building up to Friday.
But no, these these weeks are fun because the problem
is at school, you know, with me being a teacher
and walk in the hallways and all that stuff. Everybody
wants to talk about the game.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
You can't you can't hide from.

Speaker 4 (30:48):
But you know, I also got to teach it. I
also got a lot of other things on my mind too,
so there's not a whole lot of doubt. But I've
been at the other end too. When you know, my
first year when I was at Troy, we struggled a
little bit, and heck, nobody wanted to talk to you
at all times of time to yourself because you.

Speaker 6 (31:05):
Know, but then all of a sudden, you start winning
and everybody wants So it's not a bad thing. I'll
take this over over the alternative of nobody wanted to
talk to me, He said, no, it is exciting.

Speaker 4 (31:16):
It's exciting for the community. You know, even though the
game's not at home, it doesn't matter. We played there
two years ago, Week five, both teams for four and zero,
and it was a fabulous atmosphere and it was a
game that they won with thirty seconds left in the game.
But that was one of the best high school games
I've been been to have the privilege to coaching. So
we're expecting that same thing this week, and that's the

(31:38):
exciting part because you know it's going to be a
forty eight minute football game.

Speaker 2 (31:42):
I would think so, coach. I appreciate your time on
a busy week talking to us about about a big
game coming up in the area and Friday night. I'll
best of luck to you again Xenia, and hopefully we'll
get a chance to talk to you down the road.
I appreciate your time, all.

Speaker 4 (31:52):
Right, thank you so much. I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (31:54):
Matt Burdbacker, the head football coaching typical noo. His team
gets set to take on Zenia Friday night in one
of the top games, certainly in our area and across
the state of Ohio. There aren't too many games involving
a couple of unbeaten teams squaring off in week number ten.
That shows you the importance of this one. Stay with us.
More of the press box still to come. Fox Sports
nine eighty WNA.

Speaker 1 (32:32):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three, seven by three, one, six, one, seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WNA.

Speaker 2 (32:45):
Fox Sports nine eighty w one. It's a big week
of high school football, Week number ten, which is hard
to believe in his own right, and we head towards
the big game in our area, certainly, Friday Night takes
place at Xenia, where unbeaten Xena and Tip gather for
the really the championship of the mine. Both are a
top of their respective divisions, both are unbeaten visiting with
us right now as senior head coach Maurice Holding coach.

(33:06):
First of all, I appreciate your time. What has this
week been like for you and your coaching staff and
your players getting ready to play a game of this magnitude.

Speaker 7 (33:14):
Well, I think we have just tried to do the
best job we can of just trying to make it
a normal week. We're obviously excited, We obviously know what's
at stake. We obviously understand what opportunity we have to
play in front of our home crowd at Senior Night.
You know, you've got two unbeaten teams, two really good
football teams going head to head. We're super excited about

(33:37):
the the opportunity, but we are trying to just prepare
for like a normal week.

Speaker 2 (33:42):
Is it possible to make it too big?

Speaker 4 (33:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (33:46):
I do, uh, I definitely think so, because you know,
you know, we we still got some some weeks that
we want to play. We're not We're not playing just
for Week ten. We're we're trying to finish our season,
you know, and canon like everybody else is, so we
you know, we want to just try to keep it
in perspective. You know. Uh, Tip's a really good football

(34:07):
team and coach Burbaker got a lot of love and
respect for that. Guy does a really good job over
there with his kids and his program. So we just
are trying our best to just stay as focused as
we can, uh as we move forward.

Speaker 2 (34:22):
I think that's a great point about you know, there's
you want to you want to keep playing obviously, and
you will be playing after this week with the playoffs
coming around, but you want to go you want to
make that type of run. Does but does this still
almost kind of feel like a playoff game?

Speaker 7 (34:36):
Almost definitely, most definitely, especially with the with the with
the talent, and with the talent and and with the
the you know, the the hype and what comes with
the game. I definitely think that it's going to feel
like a playoff atmosphere. Like I said, this place is
gonna be rocking on Friday, So I definitely would say
so for sure.

Speaker 2 (34:57):
Obviously there's a lot of attention focused on your offense,
and rightfully so with the numbers of Dante White has
put up this season. But I want to start out
our conversation about that side of the ball with your
coach about your quarterback. I mean, he's been a four
year starter, if I'm correct that that is such an
advantage to have, especially isn't it in playing a game
like this on a Friday night.

Speaker 7 (35:16):
Absolutely, because no moment is too big for him. He's
been at all of them.

Speaker 2 (35:21):
You know.

Speaker 8 (35:22):
I made that.

Speaker 7 (35:22):
Decision as when he was a fourteen year old to
kind of lead our program. And he's done everything exceptional
from start to finish. Coming to every meeting that we
meet on Sundays, coming to game playing meetings, putting time
in after practice, learning our scheme and having a great
understanding of what we do and how we do it

(35:44):
just makes him so much better and gives me the confidence.
And like I said, he's going to make the right
decisions and he's going to do the things that are
needed for us to be successful.

Speaker 2 (35:54):
Gavin mcmatus is throwing fifteen touchdown passes this year in
just one interception. Obviously, the next question centers on his
decision making the numbers say it's very good coach, But
that is a strength of his, isn't it.

Speaker 7 (36:07):
Absolutely. Our offense is very quarterback driven, so for him
to be able to go out there and make decisions
and kind of kind of be like a coach on
the field essentially with the things that we do offensively,
with our run, pass options and things of that nature.
A lot of that stuff is post snap, meaning like

(36:29):
it happens after the snap happens. Stuff's not predetermined. He
has to make choices to where to put the ball,
when to give it, when to throw it, where to
throw it to, you know, And that's a lot of
responsibility for somebody. So the fact that he's been able
to do that do that at a high level. I
think it's a completion percentage. It's like seventy eight percent
right now, close to eighty percent. So when you have

(36:51):
that kind of completion percentage, you're limiting the amount of
turnovers that you have. That always gives you a great
opportunity and a great chance to win.

Speaker 2 (36:59):
Spending some time I Amazinia had football coach Maurice Holding
here in the press box big game on Friday night
a Xenia and tip for the Miami Valley League Championship.
They are both unbeaten and both a top their respective
divisions in the MVL. Coach, going into the season, you
knew you had a lot of talent coming back. I
always like to ask coaches this thought when you get
to this point of a season. But was there one

(37:20):
game during the season where you went, you know what,
we're pretty darn good.

Speaker 7 (37:25):
I think the game that gave me that thought process.

Speaker 4 (37:30):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (37:31):
And then where I was super proud of my team's
resilience and and ability to fight through adversity was Butler.
So Butler was Week five. Butler last year beat US
twenty eight to twenty one. We were winning that game
twenty one and twenty seven, and we end up, like
I said, dropping that game, and we weren't able to

(37:52):
kind of finish right that game. That's kind of where
this year's mantra came from. Is you know last year's season,
seven out of the eleven games, we were leading at
halftime and we just didn't finish. So that was our
whole thought process as we came into this season was
finished the fight, which is our mantra. We got to

(38:13):
finish fighting for four quarters. You may be up at halftime,
but you still got to play, You still got to execute,
You still have to do things at a high level
until the clock system triple zero. So that's just been
our mantra as we've moved forward, and Butler was the
game that I really saw us have to fight and
scratch and claw to get to where we want to be.

(38:36):
You know, we were losing that game at halftime. You know,
it was ten to four, It was ten to fourteen
going in a half. They end up coming down the
field kicking a field goal, making the game seventeen to ten.
We get the ball back, we drive down the field,
we tie it up, we get a stop, we score again.
We fumbled the pat and then he ends up running

(38:58):
in for a touchdown to make it twenty five seventeen
two really really big stops. So on defense, fourth down
sack to win the game. You know that just let
me know that the kids that we had were resilient.
The kids that we had, you know, like I said,
we're going to buy into our mantra and buy into
what we wanted to do, and that that's all you

(39:20):
want as a coach. You want the kids to believe
in the vision, support what you what you're preaching and
teaching every day, and if they can carry that out,
then you're in great shape. So I would say that
that's the game that that I really felt like this
is a special group of young men that want to
be successful and want to finish every game.

Speaker 2 (39:39):
Go to that mindset. Help you in the Chroy game
as well to a game he won by three points.

Speaker 7 (39:44):
Oh absolutely, When you can When you can do that
and you know it's eight forty one on the clock
and you hold the ball for eight minutes to forty
one seconds to finish, to finish the game, that's that's
that's definitely finished in the fight. That's definitely find a
way to grind it out. Uh, find a way to

(40:06):
push through and and and be successful through some adverse situations.

Speaker 2 (40:11):
All right, let's talk obviously now we have to talk
about about your running back of almost sixteen hundred yards
for Dante White. What does it make him so special? Coach?

Speaker 7 (40:20):
Uh? He plays and he brings the style of football
that we want to that we want to play. That's
how he runs physical like we will. We want to
play a physical brand of football on the defensive line
and the offensive line because we are firm believer. That's
how you win football games being in the trenches. And

(40:41):
he brings that element of what we want being physical.

Speaker 2 (40:45):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (40:45):
He wears on you. You know, that's why he gets
and the carries that he gets. You know, you're talking
thirty eight carries, twenty carries, twenty five carries. Uh and
and and that weighs on a defense. So shouts out
to him, shouts out to that offensive line. You know,
we got a you know, a couple older, older guys,
you know, junior Tommy ersum are our captain and leader,

(41:07):
Gunner Stephan who's our center, senior A. J. Anderson, our other,
our other tackle, Kaden Roberson. We had a freshman playing
sometimes to Max Green. C. J. Johnson's the other guard
who's a junior. So you had a veteran group, uh,
and a group that takes a lot of pride and
being physical. And I think that he they they all

(41:28):
buy into that. And you have that along with number
twenty four, who's running that rock and you know, taking
that approach that he wants to come downhill on things.
You know that that helps, That helps with the situation.

Speaker 2 (41:40):
I would imagine to coach, he does what all good
running backs do and say and will say, Uh, that's
where the props go for him, Isn't it that offensive line?

Speaker 7 (41:49):
Absolutely? Absolutely?

Speaker 2 (41:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (41:51):
Every every time he's had a big game and uh
he's been able to have success, you know, he always
goes back to saying, you know, it's it's it's the
offensive line.

Speaker 4 (42:00):
And and and like I said, we take.

Speaker 7 (42:02):
A lot of pride and running God's favorite play, which
is power. That's who we are, that's our identity, that's
what we believe in, and that's just what we hang
our hat on. It's being physical and being able to
uh dominate a lot of Scrimmaguy.

Speaker 2 (42:16):
Is that the same mindset your defense as coach?

Speaker 7 (42:19):
Absolutely being physical and being sound?

Speaker 4 (42:23):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (42:23):
You know coach Schnyder is our defensive coordinator.

Speaker 4 (42:26):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (42:26):
And he has a quote that he that he's coined
himself that he always tells people to snap it again,
and people snap it again, and that just goes back
to make it make being discipline, allowing them to do
the things that they need to do.

Speaker 4 (42:42):
No.

Speaker 7 (42:42):
I just I think it's just making them snap it again.
Being physical upfront and being sound. Those are his two
things that he always says, if we can make them
snap it again. People will easily make mistakes, and if
we stay sound in our technique and discipline, we'll be
in good shape.

Speaker 2 (42:58):
Coach, I'll ask you about tip in a moment or so,
but I want to get your thoughts on a week
like this. You've been down this road before, obviously, where
uh a week ten game means alive with the playoffs
on the on the line, and so many other aspects
of a game like this. But how much fun is
a week like this for a football coach, for a
program like Xenia, For the success you've had in the past,
this is a special week, isn't it?

Speaker 4 (43:20):
Oh?

Speaker 7 (43:20):
Yeah, most definitely. I think you, Uh, you got to
kind of embrace the moment a little bit, you know,
like you're obviously there's some nerves and you know, you're.

Speaker 4 (43:29):
You're you're trying to make sure you know things are ready,
but you.

Speaker 7 (43:32):
Also have to enjoy the process, enjoy everything that's going on,
you know. And like I said, this this isn't.

Speaker 4 (43:40):
Says it my first rodeo.

Speaker 7 (43:42):
As far as being able to be in this position,
I've been fortunate enough and blessed enough to have this
opportunity before. Uh, I Remember I was uber nervous and
you know, thinking about this, thinking about that, and trying
to keep myself together. Uh, And I really didn't enjoy

(44:02):
just a moment in the process. So I think moving
into it now, I'm just happy to be out here.
I'm happy to be able to have this opportunity. Uh
And I'm happy for our boys and our community to
uh to share this moment and it should be a
really great night.

Speaker 2 (44:18):
All right, Let's get your thoughts on the team you'll
face on Friday. Just like you, they roll in unbeaten.
I think a lot of similarities in the mindset and
the things that you do. What impressions you about this
tip team you'll see on Friday.

Speaker 7 (44:29):
They don't make mistakes. They don't make mistakes. That's a
good football team. Uh. You know, they got to talk
more quarterbacks who's tossing it all over the yard. And
they got a receiver number six who's very dynamics on
a perimeter. Defensively, they're extremely sound in what they do.

(44:50):
Their kids play extremely hard. They do all the little things.

Speaker 2 (44:54):
The right way.

Speaker 7 (44:56):
So you add all that together, man, you give yourself
a recipe for success. That's why they've been so good,
uh is because of that is being able to have
guys offensively that can make big plays, and then guys
defensively that just play hard uh, you know, read their
keys saying their gaps uh and and play extremely hard.

Speaker 2 (45:17):
So it should be a fun one on Friday night
at Xenia. Xenia plays host to Tip the Miami Valley
League Championship up for grabs. Coach Hold, I certainly appreciate
your time. Thank you for giving me some time to
talk about your team and talk about your program. Should
be a fun one on Friday. Best of luck and
hopefully we'll get a chance to talk again here soon.

Speaker 4 (45:33):
Yes, sir, appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (45:34):
Coach holding with these Xenia Buccaneers. They have the Tip
dread Devils on Friday night League Showdown for the least,
stay with us more than the press box still to come
on Fox Sports nine eighty will.

Speaker 1 (46:13):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three seven by three one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports ninet eighty WN.

Speaker 2 (46:26):
I'm back with you on this Wednesday afternoon, three fifty seven,
nearing ther top of the hour. Next hour, our friend
Matt Cotney from the Nebraska Football Radio Network will visit Whiz.
We'll get a preview of the corn Huskers, who will
come to Columbus on Saturday to face Ohio State. The
corn Huskers were rolled last weekend in Indiana by the Hoosiers,
and well for that, guess what they get this week.

(46:49):
They get Ohio State this Saturday in Columbus. You heard
Matt Rule a little bit earlier say we're excited about
the opportunity. I love those coaches when they make the
comments like that that, well, it's a week for us
to get better. We well, okay, yeah, I think you're well, okay,
I think he's realistic to understand what he's walking up.

Speaker 3 (47:10):
He knows Saturday, he knows.

Speaker 2 (47:11):
Yeah, there's no question about that. So that will be
Saturday in Columbus. So Buck Eyes and those pesky Nebraska
Cornhusker NBA Tonight, the Cavaliers open up in Toronto Tomorrow.
On the show, tim Alcorn will visit with us the
Voice the Cavaliers, the recap, the opener, look ahead to
the season, So we have that coming up tomorrow for
you on the program. I have some other things lined

(47:32):
up for you as well to during the show tomorrow
as we close in on another busy, busy weekend college football,
high school football, as you just heard, and again thanks
to both end coaches Matt burt Baker from Tip and
Maurice Holden from Xenia for visiting with us and giving
us some insight into their teams. I think games like this,
when you get two unbeaten teams in the final game

(47:52):
of a regular season, there's just something special about it.
And yes, I know the playoff field expanding to sixteen
per region has a lot of people thinking that it
kind of takes a little bit out of it because
both teams are in. Well, both teams would be in
regardless if it were eight or twelve or whatever. But
this was just going to be fun, I think. And

(48:14):
we talked about the Marion Local Cold Water game as well. Two.
We're working to put something together on that for you
tomorrow night as tomorrow in the program as Walk too
is Hopefully we'll get that lined up also, So a
lot to get excited about and a lot to talk about.
Let Me come back World Series opens on Friday. The
ticket prices are staggering, and we're gonna talk about that

(48:35):
when we come back. It's the press Box, Fox Sports

Speaker 1 (49:14):
Welcome to the press Box with Marty Banister, the latest

from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine three seven by three one
six y one seven zero the press Box on Fox
Sports ninet eighty WNE.

Speaker 2 (49:36):
Coach Dorris is is somebody that I rely on very heavily,
and I just feel like this is the right thing
for the team. Brown's head coach Kevin Stefanski announcing earlier
today that he is relinquishing play calling duties, handing it
over to offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. Welcome back to the
press box, Fox Sports nine eighty w O and eight
another hour of the program with you. Good to have
you with us on this Wednesday. Kelly Beach producing the program.

(50:00):
I'm already Banister, and we are happy to have you
with us here this afternoon. I retweeted or re exed
or whatever you do now I guess on X yeah exactly.
A video of the Indianapolis Colts press conference earlier in
the week where the Forest Buckner, their defensive tackle, went

(50:22):
to the practice or the media session accompanied by the
Oregon Duck. The costume of the Oregon Duck. Well, come
to find out that inside the costume of the Oregon
Duck was former Ohio State defensive player Taekwon Lewis. Must
have been a bet, I guess between the two and
the look on Lewis's face when they pulled the duck

(50:44):
head off is it's pretty good the embarrassment that he
had to do that. So you get a chance to
check that out, I think you'll find it entertaining. No
reposted that on a retweeted re exed at whatever you
do these days, and I think you'll enjoy that so well.
High State fans won't enjoy it, but it's still pretty
funny nonetheless. All right, moving on as we continue on

(51:09):
the press box, Mid American Conference announced it's media days
for basketball yesterday had their media day for basketball. Year
to say, Ohio was the preseason favorite in the Mid
American Conference race. Coming up this season, Jeff Bowls team
returns three starters off a club that made a nice
run last year and they're the preseason favorite. In Miami.
Of course, we have RedHawks basketball, football and football for

(51:31):
you right here. On Fox Sports nine Adwee Travis Steels
team picked to finish in the number six spots. So
and as we get into basketball, and in fact, this
will see this will start next week because we're closing
in on that. Each week we will visit with both
head coaches at Miami on the program. Men's and women's
basketball get a weekly update. So we're looking forward to that,
and we'll have that segment for you on the program

(51:53):
next week. So looking forward to that. As I mentioned,
World Series opens up on Friday in Los Angeles, Dodgers
and Yankees get it going. And again, I know a
lot of people were kind of just shrugging it off
because oh, it's the it's those two markets, it's it's
all the money involved in all those things. Okay, I
get it, I understand that. But it's interesting. Demand for

(52:15):
World Series tickets in Los Angeles are averaging between thirty
one hundred and forty eight hundred dollars in LA thirty
one hundred forty eight hundred in New York. I should say, so,
I thought we would just talk about this for a moment.
Is there any amount of money that you would pay
for a ticket to a sporting event? Or a concert.

(52:36):
I mean, I don't how do you justify paying three
thousand dollars for one ticket to a game or a concert?
I mean, I I don't know how you justify that.
I mean, it would be great to go to one

(52:59):
of those games and see one of them, But are
you paying three thousand dollars for a ticket, a single
ticket for a World Series game? Is it worth that
much to you?

Speaker 3 (53:14):
I mean for some people? Okay, So I looked it up.
Super Bowl tickets for last year's Super Bowl started at
six thousand, eight hundred and seventy five dollars, and there
were tickets as high as twenty two thousand, nine hundred
and seven dollars. That twenty two thousand dollars you could

(53:39):
buy a Kia with that. You would take that money
directly to and get a brand new twenty twenty five.
So I just when we're talking about these these marquee events,
the World Series, the Super Bowl, I wouldn't even say
the NBA Finals because there's more. I don't know. People

(54:02):
care a little less, I think these days. But those
tickets are also in the thousands. And then you're talking
about the two most expensive places to live in America,
Los Angeles and New York City. I mean, the money is.
I spoke to a woman from San Francisco. I'm not

(54:23):
lying about this at all. She makes seventy thousand dollars
a year. She she was like, I'm I'm considered low
income in San Francisco.

Speaker 2 (54:34):
Well, yeah, yeah, I see that. The cost of living
there is just so off the charts. For those of
us who don't live there, we have no clue what
that is like.

Speaker 3 (54:45):
Ever make seventy thousand dollars Marty and someone tries to
tell me I'm low income, I might fight that person.
You might hear about me in the next Okay, exactly.

Speaker 2 (54:55):
Well, in comparison, I went to the eighty two Super Bowl,
the Bengals and the forty nine Ers the Silverdome. Yeah,
tickets are tickets. I still have the stub somewhere. I
want to say. It was seventy two dollars I think
was the ticket price we paid. Wow, because to fight

(55:15):
you now, at that point, at that point, our thought
process was, well, we may never number one made the Bengals.
We didn't expect them to go to the super Bowl
that year. Never thought that would happen, Nor did we
ever expect it to be that close again logistically and geographically,
so we figured, hey, might as well give it a run.
Let's go. We were in the upper deck of the

(55:36):
of the Silver Dome for that game, but still at
that time, seventy three dollars in nineteen eighty two was
a pretty healthy chunk of change. But I cannot that
would I cannot.

Speaker 3 (55:50):
Yeah, found the inflation calculator. Oh yeah, good, that would
be about two hundred and thirty seven thirty eight dollars
in twenty twentye.

Speaker 5 (55:58):
Okay, okay, that's and even that is a bit exorbitant,
but it feels reasonable for to thirty two hundred dollars
for one ticket to a World Series game. That's the
thing that just amazes me when you look at ticket
prices for events like that or concerts.

Speaker 2 (56:17):
How are these concerts? How are people paying nine hundred
dollars for a seat to go see I Mean, I've
said before I'm an enormous Eagles fan, and that's my
favorite group from a musical standpoint, but I would be
very hard pressed to shout out that kind of money

(56:38):
to go see them perform. Now, the last time they
were in Columbus the Eagles, Core Glenn Fry, Don Henley,
Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmidt, not the reincarnation now with
what's that guy's name, the country singer.

Speaker 3 (56:56):
I don't know who is in the Eagles anymore. They
I feel like those rosters.

Speaker 2 (57:00):
Well, they haven't changed that much. That they haven't. It's
not like like the New Journey, which I mean those guys, well,
those guys don't like each other for one thing. But
the Jonathan Hayes and Neil Neil Sean or the two
remaining members, then there's it's a different group now. But
I digress. But at any rate, those type of ticket

(57:21):
prices are just so I just don't know how people
do that. I really don't. And it just amazes me
that there are apparently, I mean we hear all the
time of it, all the economies is the economy is
at well, apparently there are people out there who have
this kind of income to spend on tickets.

Speaker 8 (57:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (57:39):
I mean either either that or they're spending They're spending
themselves into oblivion.

Speaker 3 (57:43):
And people are people are spending themselves into oblivion, and
and that's that's very real. Credit is a thing. It's
not like people are are necessarily putting this. They're not
getting cash money, they're you know, biding their time paying
it down.

Speaker 2 (58:02):
Well yeah, and I okay, that's fine.

Speaker 3 (58:06):
I'm not justifying it.

Speaker 2 (58:07):
I think, I think, yeah exactly, but I still it
just to me, it's just like, how do you do that?
I just I mean, I'm sure. I'm sure if I
walked if I walked in to the living room later
on to my wife Amy and said, hey, I just
dropped six thousand dollars on two tickets of the World Series,
She's laughing somewhere. Now. I guarantee you that that that

(58:32):
that would go over about as well as any negative
thing you can think of would go over. But that
that's what I just And I know, for example, I
was looking at tickets the other day for in I
think it's in March. Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffig and

(58:52):
are coming to Nationwider. They're going on on a concert
tour and they're coming to Nation Wider read in Columbus,
and I like, did some of those ticket prices and
I thought, I'm just gonna watch a rerun of Seinfeld. Yeah,
I mean I would love to see it, but you
just man, I and so, but the tickets for the

(59:12):
sporting events like the World Series tickets, I don't know
how you justify spending that kind of money on And
I know the seats. I don't even know where those
seats would be at Dodger Stadium or at Yankee Stadium.
What three I mean forty two dollars for a ticket.
I mean, I better get you within spitting distance a

(59:33):
home plate. I don't know if it does or not,
but I just still I just can't. I can't fathom
spending that kind of money for a ticket. And I
know some of you probably well, but you don't spend
any money for tickets to sporting events anyway. Well, I'm
not gonna lie to you there. I mean, I can't
tell you the last time I paid money for tickets
to a sporting event. I'm most times I'm working, so

(59:55):
there is a little bit of a difference there. But still, yeah,
that's a that's a truckload. I mean, I just I'm sorry,
I just how you do it.

Speaker 3 (01:00:04):
I had the money, yeah, I'm still probably not. I'm not.

Speaker 2 (01:00:10):
If I had the money now, I had the money
to drop on something like that, it's still be really
hard to it'd be really hard.

Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
To justify it would It would be hard to even
even with the money, it would be hard to convince
myself it would still feel like a splurge kind of
no matter how much money I made. But I mean,
if this is your thing, if you have cared about
baseball forever, and the Dodgers are your team, or the
Yankees are your team, or you just care about baseball
and you want to be in that building.

Speaker 2 (01:00:38):
Okay, I mean, power to you. Yeah, more power to you.
If if you can, if you can swing it, and
that doesn't mean your lights are going to be turned
out tomorrow and you can't feed your kids, well, okay,
have fun, or you're in that point of your life
where you don't have to worry about things like that,
More power to you. But I'm sorry, I just can't.

(01:01:01):
I can't see spend that kind of money on on
that would just as much as I love baseball, as
much as I've Yeah, sorry, I just it just doesn't
make a whole lot of sense. All right, four to
fifteen at the time when we come back, a guy
who will brings some sense to the Nebraska football team
will join us. Matt Cotney from the Nebraska Football Radio Network.
He's the longtime voice of the Nebraska women's basketball program

(01:01:23):
as well. Two will join us. We'll talk a little
Cornhuskers football. They come to Columbus on Saturday or face
Ohio State. It's the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty
W You going.

Speaker 1 (01:01:30):
In, get on the press box called Marty now at
nine to three seven buy three one six one seven
zero the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN and.

Speaker 2 (01:01:55):
Welcome back to the program on this Wednesday afternoon. It
is the press Box, Fox Sports ninety AWE. I'm Marty Bounderster.
We are so glad to have you with us here
this afternoon. As we roll on a couple of fan
polls up for this afternoon, you can vote on those
for another twenty minutes or so. Watch the biggest surprise
team winning record wise right now in the NFL. Is
that the Washington Commanders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

(01:02:16):
Right now, the Commander is getting sixty percent of that vote.
And the NBA regular seasons underway. We're asking you today
what's your level of interest? None whatsoever. I'll watch as
much as I can. Some I'll watch on occasion, or
I'll watch when the playoffs start, and right now, none
whatsoever getting sixty one percent of the vote as far
as that is concerned. As we head towards the full
NBA season again, Tim Alcorn, the voice of the Cleveland Cavaliers,

(01:02:38):
visits with us tomorrow. All right, let's talking a little
college football now. And as mentioned, he is the host
of Big Red Reaction, which I'm sure got a lot
of phone calls on Saturday when the Huskers lost at
Indiana by the final fifty six to seven. He is
the longtime played by a play voice and knows a
spectacular job calling Nebraska women's basketball, studio host in Nebraska football.
My good friend Matt Cotney joining us this afternoon. So

(01:02:59):
what was that on Saturday? Did you get a few calls?

Speaker 8 (01:03:03):
You know, Marty, we always get a lot of calls.
But unlike after the Colorado game where I had four
grown men crying in happiness after the win, my illustrious
career in US Navy prepared me for words that most
people don't understand. After this some bomination against Indiana. No

(01:03:24):
one saw that coming. I started the show and I said,
I'm going to throw out some words to start the show. Baffling, inexcusable,
and ponderous, and we went from there. I think sometimes
if the host starts the show in that vein, it
allows people to know they can vent, and vent they.

Speaker 2 (01:03:41):
Did Nebraska's five and two, and as you said, no
one saw that coming. I don't even think Indiana fans
saw that coming. I mean, they're having a great run
to the season right now. That put them to seven
and zero. With the victory, they're tied the top of
the league with Oregon right now in the Big Ten.
And how weird is that to say number one Oregans

(01:04:01):
of the Big Ten and number two they're tied with
Indiana for the lead, which is those things just don't
go together. But at the same time, what happened, I mean,
is that a fair question to ask.

Speaker 8 (01:04:14):
It's a great question. And what I'm gonna call it
as a perfect storm. You don't expect a team coming
off a bye to be that flat. Now, I had said,
and I've been very consistent, and that Nebraska has had
a flat half every game this year. Some of it
I've explained a way that if they've had a lead
that they have that I really think Matt Ruhle and
his coaching staff are not trying to put the freshman

(01:04:36):
Dylan Royola in a position to try and increase lead.
I think they've kind of taken, you know, some of
the gas off the pedal, and that leads to looking flat.
But you know, when I have gone back and replayed
the game and the quotes for matt Ruhle, they got
out schemed, they got out coached, they got out efforted,

(01:04:57):
they got out played, and that just hasn't happened in
the almost two years matt Ruhle has been here. I
think that's what really surprised everybody. I think everybody understood
Indiana was a favorite in that game, but I think
everybody thought it was going to be a pretty competitive game.
And I think everybody understood a road game, maybe Nebraska

(01:05:18):
wouldn't come out either with a win, but to not
be competitive and to make mental errors like fielding a
kickoff on the one and stepping out of bounds and
all you have to do is let it go or
put your foot out of bounds and you catch it
and you'll get it on the thirty five. There were
mislocking assignments, the lore, the team looked unfocused, and so

(01:05:39):
you name it. But I don't want to take anything
away from Indiana because credit to Hoosiers, that is a
very well coached team of veteran transfers that came in,
very motivated, and so add to everything I just said,
with an Indiana team that wasn't glad, that was well
prepared and took it to Nebraska and it was a

(01:06:00):
perfect storm.

Speaker 2 (01:06:01):
Matt Cotey visiting with us, the host of Big Red
Reaction out of the Nebraska Football radio network, the studio
hosts as well too for Nebraska football, and the long
time play by play voice of Nebraska women's basketball. The
lost to Illinois thirty one to twenty four was that
one where fans went, Okay, we played well. Was a
close game. Illinois turned out to be I think a
better than thought football team right now. Lost that by

(01:06:24):
a touchdown. It's a rivalry game. I get all that
was that one. Obviously, was that one easier to stomach
than what you saw on Saturday.

Speaker 8 (01:06:32):
Oh, night and day. Our phone calls on Big Red
Reaction were one hundred percent. Hey, we understand it. This
is Matt Rule's second year. We're behind him. You know,
we see the culture change. Thank you for everything. He's doing.
Nebraska had their opportunities for Brett Bielman as a veteran coach.
They won the line of scrimmage. Tip your hat to him.

(01:06:54):
Completely different reaction to this Indiana game. You know, I
think Husker fans no good football when they see it,
and that wasn't good football. They they saw good football
against Illinois. They just got beat. They can, they can,
they can deal with that. But the the difference in effort,
the difference in scheme, coaching, technique, Nebraska got out technique

(01:07:20):
unbelievably against Indiana. So the differences between the Illinois game
and this one, we're night and day in terms of
fan reaction.

Speaker 2 (01:07:28):
Well, let's turn it then to what what what awaits
Saturday in Columbus.

Speaker 9 (01:07:33):
Now, boy, yeah, if they come out with that kind
of effort Saturday, your phone calls will be just unbelievable
on your show.

Speaker 2 (01:07:44):
I mean, they can't do that again this week? Can they?

Speaker 8 (01:07:48):
Well? No, I mean, and I think you know, Kirk
Herbstreet did the worst thing he could have done for
for Matt Ruhle by saying twice this year on Huster
game Day that Nebraska will be seven and oh entering
the Ohio State game, so our fans pretty much had
as seven and oh because Kirk Krbstreet said it. I
think everybody looked at the Ohio State game and said

(01:08:10):
that one is probably a loss, and we understand that,
and so I think fans have been looking for that.
But I think right now what everybody wants to see is,
no matter what that final score is, is there gonna
be the same level of effort or is there going
to be a fight in this Nebraska team. That's palpable

(01:08:32):
and discernible to fans who know what fight and energy
looks like. And if they see that, I think Husker
fans will say, well, you know, even if they don't
win the game, they said, you know, they kept a
competitive they played to their best efforts. That's what fans
are looking for right now is to at least be
competitive in the game. Nebraska was a competitive in the

(01:08:55):
anti Indiana game after the second drive of the game,
and that that's hard to take.

Speaker 7 (01:09:00):
Matt.

Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
I don't know if you and i've had this conversation
on air before, we've probably had it all there. But
I find it somewhat interesting. When Nebraska joined the Big Ten,
Missouri left for the SEC. Missouri has made an impact
in the SEC. I mean they've played for the SEC championship. Heck,
they beat Ohio State last year in the Cotton Bowl,
for whatever that's worth. Whereas Nebraska after the first couple

(01:09:23):
of years back when the Big Ten was the Legends
and Leaders or whatever the heck that was called the
division split at that time. Yeah, they haven't been I
don't want to say non competitive, but they haven't been
a real factor. What's the difference. What has happened?

Speaker 8 (01:09:39):
Yeah, there's been two things. And you know, you really
have to go back at least twenty years. You know,
when Tom Osburn left and Frank Solich with his hand
picked successor, Husker fans were very mad that they only
won nine games one year and got blown out at
Colorado because they've never seen Tom Osborn get blown out
in about fifteen years. And so there was an athletic

(01:10:01):
director change. When Bill Burn went to Texas A and M.
Steve Peterson came in. Everybody thought it would be a
great hire. Former Nebraska staffer went to Pitt and made
Pitt very good, and he fired Soulis and brought in
Bill Callahan and wanted to change everything that Nebraska was
known for a physical offensive line, the walk on program,

(01:10:22):
you name it, everything that was Nebraska. Bill Callahan got
it out of here and that set the program back
behind many years. Then Tom Osborn came in as the
athletic director really kind of got things a little bit
back on track with hiring a bow Polini. But you know,
Tom was not a long term athletic director solution, and

(01:10:45):
he knew that. So when Shawn Ichorse came in to
replace him, he could not stand the brusque nature of
bo Polini and ran him off very quickly. And the
hiring process. Hopefully someday they'll make a movie about how
Mike Riley became the head coach of Nebraska under Shawn
I Cors and that turned out to be an unmitigated disaster.

(01:11:09):
And then Phil Moose came in to replace Shawn Ikors
who was let go, and everybody thought, you got to
get Scott Frost in here, because Scott Frost just went
undefeated et cept for Florida and he was the hot
coaching hire, and that absolutely didn't work. And so it's
a combination of two athletic directors that set the athletic

(01:11:33):
department behind quite a bit, and to be fair to say,
the people that were sandwiched around him wanted to go
a different direction. Okay, so when you're going in divergent directions,
it's hard to go up. And then coaching hires that
absolutely didn't work out. And so you know, if you

(01:11:56):
look since Frank Solidge, who as you know, had an
unbelove pevably great career it appens and is revered here now,
but wasn't at the time he was let go. If
you make a look at him, what bo Palini did
early in the Big ten days, it's it's it's been
a combination of athletic directors with inconsistent visions and some

(01:12:19):
just bad coaching hires, and it's been tough to take
for Husker fans, who you know, it just seems like
they're just stuck in the muck here and when are
they going to get out of it.

Speaker 2 (01:12:30):
That's a great point because I've related the story on
the air a couple of times. When Ohio State Nebraska
played last year, I had my son with me. We
were watching the game at an establishment in the Columbus area,
and I told him, I said, hey, you don't realize
what the nineties were like for Nebraska football. I mean
they were the deal. I mean there were some of
those Nebraska teams back then that stretch where some people

(01:12:51):
thought it might have been the greatest teams to ever
lace it up and play college football. And that's the thing.
I think that that recency biased thing. We hear this,
that term he used a lot now, Matt, But today's
generation has no idea how good Nebraska was back in the.

Speaker 8 (01:13:09):
Yeah, I've talked to many, many people, including my own
kids who are in their thirties now. They said, you
have to understand, those are history book teams. To us,
they don't. We don't connect with them. And you know it.
We have tried to change our co host on Big
Red Reaction to have players that are more modern that

(01:13:30):
our fans connect with instead of the people from by
gone eras. And I hate saying the nineties was a
by gone era, but you know, my birth certificate isn't
getting any any younger either, because for just what you're saying,
you know, what have you done for me lately? And
Nebraska hasn't done much lately.

Speaker 2 (01:13:47):
Absolutely, And the stretch that comes up Ohio State Saturday,
than a home game with u C l A and
then to close it up at USC Wisconsin at Iowa
kur Gerphee. So they'd be seven to zero going to
the Ohio State game and then what with wat's left
of this schedule? Obviously their bowl eligible? Now we know
that much. Is that good enough?

Speaker 4 (01:14:08):
Though?

Speaker 2 (01:14:09):
Not yet? I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Five wins, I'm sorry,
five wins. Yeah, they got to get one more of
those last five games. Uh, the UCLA game may be
the most winnable of those five.

Speaker 8 (01:14:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:14:24):
Will that be enough this year? I mean, obviously I don't.
I don't think Matt Rule's going anywhere. But will this
be considered a step forward if they get to a
bowl this year?

Speaker 6 (01:14:33):
Oh?

Speaker 8 (01:14:33):
I think so, and I think everybody would see it
that way. Got to remember, though, last year, Matt Rule
was setting it five wins with four games to go,
and you know, struck out and the Huskers didn't make
a bowl. And Jack Potter, who is one of my
rotating co hosts, former Husker blast shirt, former tight end
in the NFL, he has said consistently all year, I

(01:14:56):
don't care about anything else but getting that sixth win
this year, Well, you know, Indiana was kind of counted
on by a lot of people in August as being
a win that didn't happen. Ohio State wasn't counted on
as a win. Ucla was seen as a coin flip
game prior to us seeing what UCLA was. And now
they've kind of turned the corner a little bit. Wisconsin

(01:15:18):
has turned the corner. Usc has been really scary in
their losses, even though they've had quite a few, And
we're never going to pencil down Iowa for a win
around yere because that's a huge rivalry. So right now
there's a thought around here of here we go again
after last year getting to five wins and then rolling
a donut the last four games. So yeah, I would

(01:15:39):
agree with you. Ucla a home game is going to
be a defining game for this team this season. Because
they don't get that one, then I think the wagon
starts circling on. Is this going to be another Bowlllet's
year for Nebraska? And that rule has said, Look, I
don't care what happened before I got here. All of
this here we go again predates my staff, but unfortunately

(01:16:03):
he's he's in charge of the he's in charge of
the program right now, and he has to deal with some.

Speaker 2 (01:16:08):
Of that absolutely. As we wrap it up, how good
has Dylan Raleiola been this year? A matted quarterback?

Speaker 8 (01:16:15):
You know, up until the last two games, he exceeded expectations,
and his expectations work. We're pretty high, you know. I
look at him, and the thing that people don't talk
about is Nebraska has now got a third string left
tackle in Gunner Gatula due to injury, and I think
that has affected Riola in terms of his pocket pocket collapsing.

(01:16:38):
He's got a lot more happy feet now plus and
I think Indiana is a great example of this. Teams
have film on Dylan Riyola now and they're taking away
the deep roots and forcing him to throw underneath checkdown passes,
tight end kind of things, flare screens, jet motion, and
so he's not really completed the deep ball like he

(01:17:00):
did early on. A lot of that I think will
be on his two starting receivers who don't seem to
be able to get open against single man or press coverage.
And if you can't get your deep game going and
your running game is struggling, you got a third string
left tackle. Ultimately, it will affect the quarterback. He's still
a freshman, He's had an unbelievable year. Fans are very

(01:17:21):
happy with him, but his last two games have been
his worst, and he is in a position against going
against an unbelievable Ohio State team that's not the team
that he actually tend to get better with. But people
have been very happy with him.

Speaker 2 (01:17:36):
Well that's good because that's been Obviously, when you're going
to turn a program around, you got to have a
pretty good trigger guy. That looks like they finally answered
that question, at least in Lincoln. So Matt, it's always
a pleasure catching up with you, my friend. Best. As always,
it's great catching up with you and hearing your comments.
And I know you're excited about start of the women's

you haven't noticed, in positions sixteen and seventeen, USC and
UCLA one and four in the Big ten each right now.
Welcome to the league West Coast.

Speaker 3 (01:18:42):
Oh boy. Yeah, they even got b by Maryland. USC
did in the last seconds. Very exciting.

Speaker 2 (01:18:49):
But you still have Oregon sitting atop at four.

Speaker 3 (01:18:51):
No though, they're in there doing it.

Speaker 2 (01:18:53):

and get some of those runs in before the weather
turns completely so to where you head for the gym.
But the best way to do that and stay cool
all at the same time is sample some of the wear.
Again at coolingperformancewear dot com. They feature the Tempogenics temperature

regulating performance where it's unparalleled NASA cooling technology. What does
that mean, Well, pretty simple. It's the fabric that was
designed for NASA spacesuits where temperatures can change by oh
only five hundred degrees. Now, this is not wicking material.
It's proactive and it starts pulling the heat before you

(01:20:26):
start sweating, so as your skin gets hot, the heat's

Uh you hear win win used a lot. Well, I'd
keep tacking wins onto that.

Speaker 3 (01:21:22):
So again absolutely, I think it's also important to mention
if you're out there and you're maybe a bigger guy,
they have sizes up to three x L, so extra
small to three XL. That's gonna fit almost everybody, So
no excuse not to check these out.

thank them for being a part of our program and
being a part of the press box and we know
you will enjoy your performance. Were from Coolingperformancewear dot Com
and again thank them for we thank them for being
with us here in the program. We were talking a
football moment ago with Matt Coteney from the Nebraska Network
and I was curious during the break about Indiana, which

(01:22:43):
went into which hosted Nebraska on Saturday and crushed the
Cornhuskers fifty six to seven. Indiana is seven to zero
right now, they're four to oh in the Big Ten.
Now you talk about the schedule maker doing someone a favor.
The Big Ten schedule maker in Indiana an enormous favor
The Hoosiers this year do not play Oregon, they do

(01:23:06):
not play Penn State, they do not play Wisconsin, they
do not play Illinois, they do not play Iowa. I mean,
come on. They have Washington this week in Bloomington. Then
they go to Michigan State, which is I mean, I

(01:23:27):
don't know if you want to call it a trap
game or not. Michigan State's four and three very bland
football team. Then they're home the following week for Michigan
which is four and three, and we all know the
struggles the Wolverines are having right now, right now, Yeah,
four and three. Well, then on the twenty third, they
have to come to Columbus and that will be where

(01:23:48):
we really find out just what they actually are when
they face Ohio State. Then they close up with Purdue.
Indiana could very easily go eleven and one.

Speaker 3 (01:23:59):
Yeah, they could and undefeated season.

Speaker 2 (01:24:01):
And would by no means be if you line them
up positioned by put can you can you imagine an
eleven and one Indiana playing host to Tennessee in the
opening ride of the College Football Playoff. I mean that's
not out of the REMA possibility. They could, They can
legitimate Indiana could legitimately go eleven and one, and I
just I'm not I'm not telling you that they will,

(01:24:25):
but it is there. It's on the plate for them.
And if somehow they catch Ohio State thinking ahead to
Michigan in week number twelve, Now again they're not going
to beat Ohio State in Columbus. But I mean, you
can't this year. You can't rule anything out out of
the mix. You just can't do it because of everything

(01:24:47):
that's happened to this juncture. But again, there is the
very real possibility Indiana goes eleven and one. They're going
to finish as one of the They're going to be
in that five i've to eight mix. You would have
to think, wouldn't you eleven and one and seven and
one in the Big ten, even though they would not

(01:25:09):
have played the best teams in the Big ten. That's
going that's going to be. That's worth a lot to
a committee.

Speaker 3 (01:25:15):
It is, I mean, they're right there, it is.

Speaker 2 (01:25:19):
It's just fascinating to me that that could happen. It's
a wow, yeah, I mean could I mean just just
imagine that if you're in the SEC and you're let's
see how Obama manages to win out and finishes ten
and two and gets in. They could conceivably go to

(01:25:40):
Bloomington and play an opening round playoff game.

Speaker 3 (01:25:43):
Yeah, I mean fully, I mean fully, it's remarkable.

Speaker 2 (01:25:49):
If I'm Indiana. If I'm Indiana, I might take the
free T shirt and a copy of the home game
and go home before I play that. Hey, thanks a
lot for having us. It was it was a fun run.
We know what we're going up against here.

Speaker 3 (01:26:00):
But yeah, it's I mean, this twelve team playoff I
was definitely a little bit suspect about. But the possibilities
do make the idea of this really fun.

Speaker 2 (01:26:11):
Oh yeah, no, no question about it. And if you
use the rankings as kind of a barometer for the
twelve teams that will get in, let's that has to
be a spot for a group of five team and
right now that looks to be Boise State, which is
five and one. But let's use the AP top twenty five.
Right it's just kind of as a barometer. Your four

(01:26:32):
buys would belong to Oregon, Georgia, Penn State, and Ohio State.
Now we know that's all going to change because Ohio
State still has to play Penn State right now. Five
is Texas, so their first round game would be hosting
Notre Dame. YEP. Six is Miami. Their first round game
would be hosting BYU. Seven is Tennessee. Their first round
game would be hosting Iowa State. The eight versus nine

(01:26:54):
game would be LSU Clemson's. Wow, that's your eight versus
nine game. Indiana's on the fringe at thirteen in both poles,
so if they were to sneak in, they would have
to in this setup. Let's say they would manage to
I mean, and Notre Dame has to play at Navy
this week. Now, believe me, that's not an easy task.
And Navy is fully capable, fully capable of winning that game.

(01:27:20):
If Indiana were to slide ahead of Notre Dame, Indiana
would have to go to.

Speaker 9 (01:27:24):
Texas play their opening round playoff game.

Speaker 2 (01:27:30):
Wow, that's just to me, that those type of magic,
that's just fascinating. And you're right, Kelly, that's why this
is going to be so much fun as this thing
comes down the stretch. Yeah. But by the way, Army
and Navy are combined thirteen and er right now.

Speaker 3 (01:27:48):
Yeah, I peep, that's that's impressive.

Speaker 2 (01:27:52):
How about that, and if they can both manage to
stay unblemished, they both have to play Notre Dame yet,
I mean, it's not inconceivable that they could be both
could be eleven to oh going to December the fourteenth,
when they play each.

Speaker 3 (01:28:07):
Other, and they play each other, that would be okay.

Speaker 2 (01:28:09):
Wild Alright, it's four forty eight's the press box, Fox
Sports nine eighty w o N.

Speaker 1 (01:28:41):
Get on the press box called Marty Now at nine
three seven by three one six, one seven zero the
press box on Fox Sports nine eighty w O N
eighty and.

Speaker 2 (01:28:54):
Back when you're here in the press box Fox Sports
nine eighty w O AM. Marty battles or Kelly B's
alongside for the ride. About five minutes left in the
program for you this afternoon. Both our fan poles have
gone final today. We asked you, number one, what's the
biggest surprise team in the NFL as far as winning
record wise, having a winning record right now is concerned
in the National Football League, And it's Kelly. It's your

(01:29:15):
Washington Commanders. They got sixty percent of the vote with
a five and two mark right now. Minnesota was second. No.
One voted for Pittsburgh in the number three spots.

Speaker 3 (01:29:23):
I think because people do expect Mike Tomlin to have
his team tuned up and ready to play no matter
who's under center, because his defense is gonna defend.

Speaker 2 (01:29:35):
Yeah, that much is true, and they just find ways
to win games. And props to Russell Wilson who played
pretty well against How much of a mess are the
Jets right now? And how happy does that make a
vast majority of us?

Speaker 3 (01:29:47):
It's it's pretty wonderful. But speaking of happy, seeing Mike
Tomlin really cheesing on the sideline watching Russell Wilson was
hysterical because I mean the whole I mean the whole
lore around him. He just he so rarely smiles, but
he was cheating up. I was like, Wow, I think
Russ is really his guy, like he he wanted Russ.

(01:30:10):
He was excited when they had the opportunity to bring
him into the building.

Speaker 2 (01:30:14):
So there was a picture that circulated online for a while.
When Mark D'Antonio was the head coach at Michigan State,
he was known for being very crusty and curudgeingly if
you will, There was a sign that was held up
during game day before Ohio State played at Michigan state
and it relates to Mike Tomlin in twenty fourteen, I

(01:30:37):
think it was. And the picture was of a just
a frowning, very serious looking Mark D'Antonio, and the caption
to the sign read, I smiled once, Comma and it
was painful. So I think that of Mike Tomlin. I
smiled once and it was painful.

Speaker 3 (01:30:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:31:00):
But Pittsburgh at five and two right now and playing,
as we said, good football. Oh the nudes checked in
it says I agree that Kelly B's Redskins are They're
surprise of the year so far, being that they have
a rookie quarterback, and it's good to see that franchise
in the national spotlight again after all the years of
that other owner. Congratulations Kelly B. Well there you go.

Speaker 3 (01:31:18):
So hey oh yeah, well.

Speaker 2 (01:31:21):
Yeah, there we go. Hail to the whatever they are now.

Speaker 3 (01:31:24):
Yeah, listen, I'm on the I've got a lot of jerseys.

Speaker 2 (01:31:27):
I'm sure you do well. Also asked you today the
NBA regular season is underway. Watch your level of interest,
none whatsoever. Some I'll watch on occasion, I'll watch as
much as I can, I'll watch when the playoffs start,
and none whatsoever. Getting sixty one percent of the vote.
I will watch as much as I can, also getting
votes twenty three percent going in that category. So yeah,

(01:31:50):
therefore some folks, yeah, who who will watch?

Speaker 3 (01:31:54):
Yeah, they've been pushing it down our throats. Last night,
Lebron James and Brownie James checked in to the game
at the same time in the second quarter.

Speaker 2 (01:32:04):
A player who couldn't start for his Division one team.

Speaker 3 (01:32:08):
Listen, it's so obnoxious to me for so many reasons.
Last night they had Ken Griffy junior and senior there
and they, you know, hugged each other on the court,
and in my mind, I was like, do you Ken
Griffy Jr. Is that guy? His dad was that guy. Yes,

(01:32:28):
you can say that about one of these James, Ben,
but look, I'm not in charge.

Speaker 2 (01:32:36):
Right, none of us are, absolutely, so we all know
what that's all like. But yeah, yeah, couldn't start for
his Division one team, but is playing in the NBA. Well,
more power to him if you're able to do it.
Dad's obviously a little bit of a help there, but
a little bit just dismisch is what it is, is

(01:32:57):
what it is. Next year college football, Yeah, with all
the moving around of the conferences in realignment and everything.
It left some holes. While they still tried to get
all the schedules figured out for Washington State and Oregon State,
they have announced that next year they're gonna play each
other twice during the regular season. They're gonna play on

(01:33:18):
November the first in Corvallis and then close up the
regular season against one another twenty eight days later in Spokane.
So yeah, we're just we're just gonna play each other twice.
Why not?

Speaker 3 (01:33:29):
Why not just run it back?

Speaker 2 (01:33:31):
Oregon State's football schedule next year cal Fresno State at
Texas Tech, the Civil War Game at Oregon, they host Houston.
Then Oregon State will play at Appalachian State. Yes, at
Appalachian State, then have a bye week, then four straight
home games Lafayette, Wake Forest, the Washington State game Sam Houston,

(01:33:52):
then at Tulsa, a bye and then at Washington State.
So they can't get that reconfigured PAC twelve in business soon,
so they gotta go through one more year of that.
So yeah, they'renna playch other twice next year. That that
has happened in the past in regular season. I think
one year in New Mexico State was in a similar situation.
For some of no reason, they played Yukon twice during

(01:34:15):
the season. We just got we got to get twelve
games and we have their best to get twelve games then.
But so that's one of the one of the unique
parts of all this juggling of conferences and whatnot. So,
but they will play twice next year, so get ready
for that exciting moment for that as Oregon State in
Washington State will play twice in college football. So there

(01:34:38):
you have that. Cavaliers open up tonight NBA. They're at
Toronto tomorrow. Tim Alcorn, the voice of the Cavaliers on radio,
will visit with us and give us a recap of
the game and look ahead to the NBA season coming up.
And we'll have a couple of other things lined up
for you as well too as we roll along. World
Series again opens on Friday, Yankees Dodgers in Los Angeles,
and I think it's gonna be a very good series.

(01:34:59):
Kind of looking forward to it, actually.

Speaker 3 (01:35:01):
I need to. I hope it goes to seven games,
but I kind of hope it doesn't. But I want
the drama.

Speaker 2 (01:35:07):
I don't want baseball in November.

Speaker 3 (01:35:08):
Yeah, that's cool, We're going to have it.

Speaker 2 (01:35:11):
Though, and it just well, one of the things Major
League Baseball continues to get wrong. So one of the
many things Fernando Valenzuela has passed away, by the way,
if you didn't hear the news earlier, Valezuela, the pitcher
who captivated major League baseball when he was a rookie
in nineteen eighty one, that was during the strike year,

(01:35:32):
but passed away. He had been on the Dodger Spanish
language broadcast for a number of years. But Fernando Valenzuela
passing away out in Los Angeles, and he was something.
The way he captivated baseball was remarkable, but passing away.
So that'll do over the press block for back tomorrow
from three to five. Right here, Black Sports nine eighty

(01:35:54):
wod going eighty shed in facing

Speaker 4 (01:36:10):
