Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the press Box with Marty Banister, the latest
on all local sports from Wright State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine three seven by three, one six,
one seven zero the press Box on Fox Sports nine
(00:20):
eighty WNA.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
We we're gonna talk about this every week from here
on out now because of how we started, but every
week is so critical at this point.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Yeah, we gotta get under win.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
That's Joe Burrow stating the obvious, the Bengals quarterback. Yeah,
we're gonna talk about this every week because of the start.
Welcome to the press Box, Fox Sports nine eighty w
ol anyam, Marty Banister. We are so glad you're with
us here on this Thursday afternoon, the eve of the
final day of the high school football season and a
big weekend of college football. We are so glad you're
with us here today as we roll it out for you.
(00:53):
Kelly Be's alongside producing the program, and we were with
you right up until five o'clock today. Good show coming
up today. We talked a little NBA or friend Tom Out,
the voice of the Cleveland Cavaliers will join us. He
was in Toronto last night as the Calves opened up
in impressive fashion. Last night. Someone put on one of
the social media platforms. When you travel, of course to
(01:15):
another country, you have to go through customs and declare something.
Someone said the Calves went through customs then declared we're
going to open up a can on Toronto time. And
they did pretty impressive win for the Calves last night
to get it started. So we'll talk to Tim Alcorn
about that. Our number two, our friend Ron Brunswick will
join us from WCSM radio. He will be calling the
(01:36):
play by play. We talked yesterday about the Xenia Tip
game and how big that game is tomorrow in our
high school football tomorrow night. Maryon Local and Cold Water
play tomorrow night. Both are undefeated. If Mary and Local wins,
they establish a record for consecutive wins at fifty eight. Wow.
And Ron's gonna have the play by play of that
(01:57):
game tomorrow night. Up in the northwest part of the state,
well further north of here, not technically northwest, but West Central,
a little further up the road a bit, and Ronald
joined us at four to twenty to talk about that
game Marion Local and Cold Water in the Midwest Athletic Conference.
And someone had said the other day too, when I
was talking about that game, they said, you know, it's
funny that, basically because I had called the Xenia Tip
(02:21):
game the de facto Miami Vaval League championship game, which
it basically is, I mean, the two division leaders, only
unbeaten teams in the league. Someone said, you could call
the Marion Local Cold Water game the de facto state
championship game in those lower levels because nobody else has
beating those teams. That's true, So it'll be a fun
one tomorrow night. And Ronald joined us and give us
a little preview of that and just talk about the
(02:43):
atmosphere that surrounds those teams in that Midwest Athletic Conference
and it's just a remarkable run. We've we've had the
commissioner on the show a couple of times talking about that,
and it's just a remarkable atmosphere up there. So that's
what we have on tap forty sefternon we have a
couple of fan polls up for you today as well. Too.
Interesting comment earlier today by Ohio stated coach Ryan Day
(03:05):
when he met with the media. He was asked about
his team's pass rush ability something along those lines, and
his quote or his comment was, I'm not really happy
about anything with my football team right now. Here. They
are fourth in the nation. They've got one loss. It
was by one point at maybe one of the hardest
venues in all of college football to win a game
(03:26):
at if the quarterback had not forgotten what down and
distance were, you maybe kick a winning field, but when
you run out of there with a victory. But Ryan
Day's not happy about anything right now, As we thought
we'd ask you today, do you agree with him? I
fully agree, I'm not happy, I'm somewhat I somewhat agree
with him. It's still pretty good football team. No, it's
still the best team. Or I'm not happy with him,
(03:49):
and right now I somewhat agree with him. It's still
a good football teams getting eighty three percent of the
vote right now in our and I thought we would
ask you today as well too. With the Cleveland Browns,
now going on to Jameis Winston's quarterback, what should the
Browns do with quarterback Deshaun Watson. Now, this will be
(04:10):
an ongoing discussion with the franchise and with the fan
base and with so many folks surrounding the team, so
we thought we'd get your thoughts on it today. What
should they do with Deshaun Watson out of course, for
the rest of the season without achilles injury, it's expected
he's going to undergo the same procedure that Aaron Rodgers
went under that got him back. I think a lot
(04:30):
quicker than everybody thought that he would be back. Is
it time to move on from him? Let's keep him
as a backup and help him with whatever quarterback we
draft and in the twenty twenty five draft, or let's
get him healthy and then decide what to do with him.
And right now, eighty four percent of you say no,
it's time to move on, time to move on from him.
(04:52):
So those are your two fan polls, and again they're
up with you today until about four forty five today.
Also today another edition of the Magnificent Seven where Kelly
and I pick our top seven NFL teams. I'll have
the right half of that, killer I have the wrong
half of that. And again that would be about four
thirty five today when we do that. So we always
look forward to that. Get we've been getting a lot
of great response on that. The Magnificent seven. We even
(05:13):
has its own theme music. And when something has its
own theme music, you know what's big.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
I agree with that. I agree with that.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
We'll have that for you coming up next hour again
about four thirty five. Let's see what else is going on.
World Series. We are a day away from the start
of that. The Los Angeles Dodgers have announced that they
will wear patches honoring Fernando Violenzuela, who passed away on
Tuesday evening at the Fernando was just sixty three. No
(05:40):
cause of death was given. He pitched for the Dodgers
from nineteen eighty to nineteen ninety. As I mentioned yesterday
during the program, if you were old enough to remember
nineteen eighty, I mean, it hasn't been all that long ago.
Baseball wise, he was his He was almost in a
lot of respects, going back a little further, almost the
(06:00):
same level of popularity and impact on the game that
Mark the Bird Fidrich had when he was with Detroit
in the middle seventies. They called it Fernando Mania. Whenever
he would go to the mound. It just the remarkable
aura that surrounded him The big thing about it was
keep in mind when he was at his height when
(06:21):
he burst onto the scene. That was the strike year
nineteen eighty one, so the season baseball shut down from
May to August that year during the strike year, and
Valenzuela was a rookie at that time, went thirteen and
seven with a two point four eight and twenty five
starts tossed. Here's the number that even these days you
probably won't see equaled. He threw eleven complete games, eight
(06:45):
of them shutouts, won both the Rookie of the Year
and the National League Cy Young Award, and just ironically enough,
the Dodgers won the World Series against the Yankees that year.
In the strike year of nineteen eighty one, Vallensuela was
three to one with a two point two two and
five starts in the postseason. Pitched in the majors for
seventeen seasons, was with the Dodgers, the Angels, the Orioles,
(07:07):
the Phillies, the Potters, and the Cardinals, and finished with
one hundred and seventy three career victories. But Fando bounds
Wayla passing away at the age of seventy age of
sixty three on Tuesday evening, so the Dodgers will wear
patches surrounding that interesting story coming out of Penn State.
Head coach James Franklin declined to answer questions from reporters
(07:28):
during his weekly press conference after two of his former
players were accused by police of raping a seventeen year
old girl in their apartment back in July. Former Nitney
Lions defensive end Jamil Lyons is charged with felony rape
and former Penn State linebacker came Beyond Keys is charged
with felony rape, aggravated assault without consent and sexual assault
and misdemeanor and decent assault without consent. Now, I say
(07:50):
interesting because anytime these type of stories come up at
Penn State, everybody's mind automatically goes back to Jerry Sandusky,
no question, And I'm sure of the folks at Penn
State are ultra sensitive about any of these type of
stories that come up. And James Franklin suspended Lions and
Keys from the football team in August. The university said
(08:12):
through a statement, we are aware of the series charges
against mister Keys and mister Lyons, who are no longer
enrolled at the university. Lions is from Philadelphia played eight
games as a freshman. Keys from Varna, Virginia did not
play in red shirted last year, so that the story
will keep an eye on that coming out of State
College Pennsylvania.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
For you.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Let's see what I was gratulations to Meddledale. They won
the Dayton Public League Football Championship played on Wednesday night
last night. Beat Meddledale twenty two to two to win
the win the championship. So high school football last night?
Did you see the Liberty Kennisaus State game? The other night?
Speaker 4 (08:50):
I saw it.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Kenansas State was winless and beat Liberty, which was one
of the fringe teams that a lot of people thought had.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
A chancefeeding making.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Yeah, they were under the feet of making the college
football Playoff. Well that's out the window now, correct as
far as getting in as one of the as the
group of five at large team lost it by the
final of twenty seven to twenty four last night. Just
a wow.
Speaker 5 (09:15):
It's much better than when I checked the score, because
it was like twenty four to nothing when I first looked,
and I was like, well, that's a tough night for Liberty.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
It ended up being a tough night for Liberty. So
lost at twenty seven to twenty four. Also last night,
Jacksonville State beat Middle Tennessee State forty two to twenty
And is that Sunbellers that I think that's Conference USA
Middle Tennessee and Jacksonville State. There are a couple of
games tonight Georgia southerns at Old Dominion and Syracuse. I
think the only game Syracuse has played on Saturday this
(09:49):
year was when Ohio went up there and played to
start the season. Seemed like Syracuse is playing about every
night of the week other than Saturday. Tonight. The game
tonight they played like every time I checked their playing
on a Friday, or so it seems, and playing tonight
at pitt There's an NFL game tonight, Vikings and the
Rams go at it this evening. As again we're on
the eve of the World Series. There are three games
(10:10):
tomorrow in college football. Louisville's at Boston College, seventeenth ranked
Boise State goes to UNLV And we talked about this
back prior to the start of the season when we
were looking at the college football schedule. Tomorrow night at
eleven o'clock Eastern time, and I'm sure you'll want to
get up and wake the wife and kids and get
the family all gathered around the tv tomorrow night eleven
(10:32):
o'clock eleven o'clock to watch Rutgers play at USC in
a Big ten game. And that'll be tomorrow night. That'll
be a hoot, won't it.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
Yeah, of this rockets good time of football.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
Eleven o'clock Eastern time on a Friday night. And people
wonder why I always say the whole world should be
on Eastern time. Well that's why you play kick get
everything at eight o'clock. You agree that, you agree with it.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
You know it, world get scheduled.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
It's a Big ten game. It's it's a Fox Big
ten game on a Friday night, and it's Runners at USC,
and it's a conference game. They're flying all the way
across the country to play at the La Memorial Coliseum
eight o'clock out of Los Angeles. And you have to
say it that way when you're not in Los Angeles.
You have to say los Angeles or doesn't work.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
I do not believe that that is true.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Oh it is it is. You look it up. You'll
find it in the broadcasters handbook. You have to say
it that way.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Gotcha?
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Got thirty seven geographical names.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
Yes, section two A Los Ange Yeah, Angeles one A Yeah,
got it, I'll double check it.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Yeah, what'd you check on that? Please? But I'm sure
you'll see it in there. So but that's pretty much
what is going on in the world of sports. Of course,
the as we mentioned, the NBA is underway. The Cavaliers
were impressive last night. We'll spend some time with Tim
Alcorn coming up here in a couple of moments. They
are routed Toronto last night one hundred thirty six to
one hundred and six. Evan Mobley had twenty five, Donovan
(11:58):
Mitchell had twenty one. The Calves win. The will next
be well, we'll check with Tim and get his thoughts
on the start by the Calves as an impressive way
to get it going. Last night they have the Wizards next. Yeah,
they have the Wizards next. So no, I'm sorry, is
it tonight? What today? Today's twenty four? Tomorrow night they
have the Pistons in Cleveland and then Saturday they go
to the Wizards. So that's your Calves update for you,
(12:21):
as we have that for you. So other than that,
that is pretty much what is happening here on this
very nice Thursday afternoon, as we continue along here today
in the press box. Tomorrow's show, of course, we'll have
our week ten edition of the iHeartRadio High School Football
Blitz for you, previewing all the games coming up around
the area and around the state of Ohio. A big Friday,
(12:44):
Week number ten, the final Friday of the regular season
in high school football, just kind of sped right past
us without paying much attention to it. So as far
as the dates and things are concerned, just flew right by.
Blue Jackets and hockey are off today and tomorrow. They
returned to play next they have a little time off.
There'll be in action on Saturday when they go to Nashville.
(13:05):
So a couple of days off for the Blue Jackets.
So the Major League Soccer playoffs are about to ramp
up and get started. There was a parade in New
York for the WNBA champions today. We can tell you
about that, Keyler, have more on that tomorrow and for
the ladies. So that's pretty much what's happening on this
Thursday in the world of sports. So I'm gonna head Liz,
let me come back. We'll talk a little hoops. Tim
Alkord Voice the Caz visits with us. This is the
(13:26):
press box Fox Sports nine eighty WNA.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three, seven by three, one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty wn eighty enter.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Back with you on this Thursday afternoon. It's the press
box Fox Sports nine eighty w any. I'm Marty Banister.
We are so very glad you're with us here on
this Thursday afternoon as we talk with you right up
until five o'clock. Kelly Be's producing the program and we're
with you a getting right up until five. Fan poles
stay open as well too, until about four to forty five,
so you can vote on those. You can vote early.
(14:10):
You can vote often in these fan polls and nobody
will get upset with you, so that's okay. So we
have those again up for you to a four to
forty five today in a press box, all right. The
NBA regular seasons underway. The Cavaliers opened up last night
and went up to Toronto and just basically opened up
a can on the Toronto Raptors and rolled to a
thirty point win in the season opener, one thirty six
to one oh six on the line with us right
(14:30):
now is our good friend, the play by play radio
voice of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who also apparently is a
huge Kelly b fan. I mean they had a conversation
like they like they've been sitting around the Thanksgiving table
for years before we went on the air. Uh Tien
out court, How are you, my friend?
Speaker 3 (14:47):
I'm doing well. You know. I was sharing with Kelly
that I do several interviews and always talked to the
producer before I joined the host Ge is the friendliest
producer of all the folks that I deal with, Marty,
she deserves a raise.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Well, you're talking to the wrong person about that. No,
she does a fantastic job and this show wouldn't be
anything anywhere near what it is without her daily contributions,
which I don't know if it says anything about the
show or not, but never nevertheless, but you're right, it
does a fantastic job and we're glad she's with us
here every day. So Number One, opening up the way
(15:26):
they did last night season openers in a long season
like the NBA, tim had to be a lot to
like last night. Were you surprised at the way the
Cavs just basically just strolled past Toronto last night.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Well, you have to consider the fact Toronto is a
young team rebuilding. They were without our j Barrett last night.
But all that taken into account of very impressive performance
by the Cavaliers, and yes, I was somewhat surprised they
want to I won't say they struggled during the preseason,
but certainly it was very coppy and last night, Marty,
(16:00):
they appeared to be clicking on all cylinders. The offense
was smooth. They basically got the ball up and down
the floor the way they wanted to, playing at the
pace that Kenny Atkinson has instilled, and their defense picked
up right were left off last year. It was outstanding.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
And you know this very well from your time covering
the Calves. These seasons, Tim, they are marathons and not sprints,
and so I mean, I'm sure you've seen it. There
have been teams that fly out of the gate and
by the time April rolls around, they're struggling to get
to five hundred. But it's still impressive, isn't it to
open the way that they did in a situation like
last night. No matter how bad or good, Toronto is.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
Exactly and especially without Max Struce in the lineup. He's
an integral part of what they do. And unfortunately Max
is going to be lost for about six weeks, so
Dean Wade got the start. I would think he'll continue
starting until Max is reassessed in about six weeks, so
he's going to be out a while. Sense, Yeah, it
(17:01):
was very impressive. Now to your point, it's a marathon.
There's eighty one more to go after last night, but
it was a great way to kind of come out
of the shoot and get a real good feeling about themselves.
And for Kenny Atkinson, he couldn't have asked for a
better performance from his basketball team.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
That was going to be my next question, his first
game as Cavalier's head coach, and again, as you said,
it couldn't have gone any better for him. What's the
biggest Is it fair to ask what the biggest difference
is right now, Tim, between what Kenny and Atkinson is
doing now and what was done before.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
Well, as far as on the floor, it's the pace
of the offense. It is really moving up and down
the ninety four feet and a lot of times, Marty,
they're not covering the ninety four feet They love to
get three balls up in transition, so you either get
an off or excuse me, a defensive rebound or even
off a mat by the other team, and you're flying
(17:58):
to the other end. So as far as on the
floor play, that's the biggest difference between Kenny and his predecessor, JB. Bickerstaff.
And that's not a knock on JB. Every coach has
their system and this is Kenny's system, and I think
that's why he was brought in, just to see what
he could do differently with this core group of players
that the Cavaliers kept together.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
Is it fair to say, Tim, it's a player friendly style.
Does that make any sense?
Speaker 6 (18:26):
Well?
Speaker 3 (18:27):
I think players, as you know, Marty, whether it's high school, college, NBA,
they like to run. They want to get up and
play fast paced basketball. I think, especially in today's age
where the three ball is such a major part of
the game at every level, that those guys are used
to playing at that uptempo speed. They're used to playing
(18:48):
with three balls flying around the gym, and so yeah,
I think it's very player friendly and the Cavaliers, their
players have certainly bought into it.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
He's the radio play by play voice of the Cleveland Cavaliers,
Tim Out, we're spending some time with us here in
the press box Fox Sports nine eighty W, O and E.
The Cavs were impressive in their season opener last night
as they roll past Toronto one thirty six, one oh six.
This is a question that I've had. It's kind of
off the topic of the game itself, Tim, but for
a a play by play broadcaster, and I've had this
(19:18):
discussion with other guys who I consider to be friends
in the business and whether they consider me consider me
to be a friend that one, that's up to them.
But the thought of starting a season like this, and
I think it was might have been Paul Keels that
said to me, the voice of the Buckeyes at one time,
that it's you always hear the term it's like riding
(19:38):
a bike, but when you haven't done it for about
five months, the bike wobbles a little bit when you start.
How do you how do you handle that when you
I mean, thankfully you have some exhibition games to kind
of work some of the kinks out, I guess, But
is there a feeling of nervousness before you went on
the air last night?
Speaker 3 (19:54):
Yeah, that's a great question. Then you're right, and I
like Paul's analogy there that a little wobbly when you
get back on the bike. I may use that sometime,
but it's very accurate. You get behind that mic and
you're thinking, all right, the last time I did this
was Game five against Boston, and to your point, there's
a couple of preseason games, but that becomes mayhem in
(20:16):
the sense of so many lineups and so many guys
running in and out, and it's almost like calling a
hockey game. They're changed, not on the fly, it seems,
but yeah, it takes a while, takes a little bit
to get back into the rhythm of things, and for
this Cavs team, who's going to play so much more
uptempo basketball now, it became a real challenge in those
(20:37):
first few minutes. But once you got into the flow,
it did come back.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
All right, Let's get back to things that are probably
more important to our listeners than just you and I
than you like caring out about our business. So let's
let's get back to that part of it. From a
conference standpoint. Obviously, Boston still resides in the East. They
won the championship last year and I think I asked
you last year when we were talking about the Calves
wrapping it up, if the Cave, if the Celtics were
(21:03):
gettable last year, you said yes, and you thought the
Calves could have gotten them last year. I know it's
one game in and we're it's October. We'll still be
talking about this probably in June. But how does it
shape up in the East this year?
Speaker 3 (21:18):
Well, first of all, mister Banister, I'm gonna go back
to when we had that conversation and I will say
that I still believe if the Calves had been healthy,
if they had gone into that Boston series with Jared Allen,
who of course missed the final three games of the
Orlando series and then the entire Boston series, and if
(21:38):
they had had Donovan Mitchell, would they have beaten Boston.
That I don't know, but I think it would have
gone deeper than five games. And I think that's the
key to this year. To then answer your question, this
needs to be a healthy Calves basketball team. Now they
are deep. They brought pretty much everybody back. They've got
dep Kenny Atkinson has said he's going to play everybody. Certainly,
(22:01):
Boston is the favorite in the East as they should be.
They rolled through the East last year NBA champions and
the East is going to be a real dogfight. I mean,
there are seven quality teams in the Eastern Conference, including
the Cavaliers, so it's going to be a slug fest.
That being said, Boston is the team to beat, but
(22:24):
I do think the Cavaliers have a roster and have
a makeup, if healthy, that can play with this Boston
team and the other teams in the Eastern Conference.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
Can I ask you why you said, mister banister, were
you Were you a tad upset at the beginning of
that answer.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
No, no, no, But you know you made your point
that I said Boston was beatable, and I still think
they were. If Jared Allen and Donovan Mitchell are in
that series, I think it goes deeper than five. And
you know, if there's a heavy favorite and all of
a sudden, that series goes six or seven pressures on
(23:01):
the top seed. And that's what Boston was.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
And Marty, he's mister Tim Alcorn, the voice of the
Cleveland Cavaliers, joining us here in the brass box on
this Thursday afternoon. The play In Tournament is back this
year in the NBA. Do you like.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
That's It was something that grew on me, to be
honest with you. As we got started and it was
first introduced last year, I'm like, God, I don't know
about this. It seems somewhat gimmicky. But then as you
got into it and you started to follow the standings
and the pressure was on to win those games, and
(23:38):
the competitiveness of NBA basketball players started to shine through. Yeah,
it grew on me and I did enjoy it, and
I think they'll tweak it a little bit as time
moves along, but I think it's a good thing for
the NBA. I do think in that Eastern Conference that
we talked about, Indiana ends up in the Eastern Conference finals,
and I think the play in tournament really benefited the Pacers.
(24:02):
They kind of fed off that success and it carried
them through the year.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Do the players like it?
Speaker 3 (24:09):
I think so. Again, they're all uber competitors. It doesn't matter.
You see them in practice and all of a sudden,
a little free on three game will pick up, or
you know, whatever the case may be, and they go
at it. They are competitors. So you put something in
front of them, something to play for, and they want
to win it, period, So yeah, I think the players
(24:30):
did enjoy it and do enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
Tim Alcorn Withers, the voice of the Cleveland Cavaliers Calves,
opened up with an impressive win last night over Toronto
one thirty six to one oh six last night. Good
balance up and down the lineup as well too for
the Calves last night. Offensively, Tim, when you started doing
this and being around the NBA, I think the popularity
of the league and helped me with this because you're like,
(24:54):
obviously a lot closer to her than we are. But
it seems like it's kind of taking a turn upward
because there were I mean, you know this, there were
a couple of years where people just seem to kind
of sour on the game a little bit. But it
seems like that's taking a nice turn right now, hasn't it.
Speaker 3 (25:08):
Absolutely? And I think it's because of the young stars
that are now in the game. And that's not to
take anything away from the Lebron's and the Steph Curry's
and Luka Danchitz and those type of guys, but there
are young stars now in the game that play at
such an elite level, and the exposure is so high
that younger fans are really tapping in to the elite
(25:32):
level to which they play Anthony Edwards and guys like that.
So yeah, I think the league does have a uptick
in popularity. The ratings have been through the roof as
far as the television side is concerned. So I think
the NBA isn't a really really good spot right now.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
How much do you think the Olympics help that, because
it seemed to me that there was a lot of
interest in the Summer Games, and I mean the way
the US had to win those games, I mean they
were right down to the wire. If Steph Curry hadn't
decided to play out of his complete mind, who knows
what would have happened. But that seems to me just
to be a real boost for the game as well too.
Speaker 3 (26:09):
Oh there's no doubt when you look at teams like
France with Lembonyama and the other European teams and they
Canadian teams. I mean, these teams really brought the entire
international game to the world audience, and I do think
it benefited immensely because all of a sudden, it wasn't
like the Dream Team or other USA teams that just
(26:32):
dominated at the Olympic levels. These foreign teams, these European teams,
they can now compete at a high level. And that
just shows you the quality of basketball around the globe,
not just here in the United States.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
All right, Tim, as we wrap up our conversation again,
we mentioned the win last night over Toronto. On Friday night,
the Cavs will have Detroit and then Saturday a quick
turnaround a game to Washington, and then before that and
then there's another turnaround a day between games with the Knicks,
and the Lakers come in next week on Tuesday night.
These early stretches of games, there's a lot of games
in a short period of time. Is that good or bad?
Speaker 3 (27:09):
Well, I think you're going to get a quick sense
as to what this Cavalier team best or what this
Cavalier team is all about. So in that sense, it's
a good thing. And we saw last night in Toronto
when Kenny Atkinson played ten to eleven guys solid minutes.
So the depth of this team will come through. To
your point, it's a jam packed schedule, but really, Marty,
(27:31):
it's like that throughout the year you're playing four or
five games a week and to have it back to
back early on with Detroit tomorrow and then Washington on Saturday.
That certainly is interesting, But yeah, these are NBA athletes.
They realize that they've got to step up and be
ready to go, and so I think everybody kind of
gets their mind and their body ready for an eighty
(27:54):
two game marathon, as you termed it earlier. So I
think the Cavs will be just fine.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
I lied. I got one more question. I saw that
the game on the thirtieth is with the Lakers, and
of course that means lebron and Bronny coming back to Cleveland.
What has been the reception when he has come back
since everything where it went with him and leaving going
to the Lakers. What's the reception he gets in Cleveland?
Speaker 3 (28:18):
Very positive. It was a totally different scenario when he
left the second time and went to LA. He had
brought the championship to Cleveland as he had promised. He
took the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals four years in
a row, and so when he left the second time,
all was well. I mean, sure, there are thousands of
(28:40):
Cavalier fans that would still love to have them, Don't
get me wrong, but there wasn't the vitriol that was
there when he left the first time. He is warmly received.
He'll always acknowledge the crowd. Lebron feels as though it's
a warm welcome home when he comes back.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
Now, Tim, that is my final question. Thank you very
much for joining us here this afternoon. I always appreciate
your time, and we'll certainly catch up with you as
the season rolls along. As we mentioned, it's the regular
season runs into April before the playoffs start, and I'm
sure we'll have a chance to talk again. Always a pleasure,
my friend. Thanks for your time, Marty.
Speaker 3 (29:14):
Always good to talk to you. I love talking to
Kelly be So let's do this more often.
Speaker 2 (29:20):
I'll get I'll just give you her number, and you
guys can just chat whenever you want to. How's that.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
Easy, now, Marty, Easy? Now look forward to it. All right?
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Tim Alcorn to play by play voice the Cleveland Cavaliers.
As always, we appreciate his time. Three thirty four Here
in the press box, we'll continue along on this Thursday afternoon.
Still a lot to get into as we roll along here.
The Magnificent seven comes up in one hour on the
press box. Fox Sports nine eighty w going in.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
three seven by three one six, one seven zero the
press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Eighty and welcome back to the program. Three thirty eight
is who will roll along with you here on this
Thursday afternoon. It is the press box, Fox Sports nine
eighty w O Anny, I'm Marty Banister. Kelly's producing the
program and you have us if you're listening right up
until five o'clock, so we would prefer that you stay
with us up until that time as well too. Let's
update you on some injuries as far as Ohio State
(30:56):
is concerned for the game on Saturday with Nebraska. Ryan
Day announced that Let's Tackled Josh Simmons is out for
the remainder of the season. He's over the knee injury
in the Oregon game on Saturday, so he has done
for the year and that's a blow to an area
of the Ohio State team that We've had numerous people
on this program and we asked them the one thing
that concerned them the most about the Buckeyes and offensive
(31:17):
line was usually at the top of the list. Well,
they've lost where their starters. Left tackle Josh Simmons is
done for the season. Ohio State also Lathan Ransom, was
injured in the Oregon game is expected to be able
to play. He's listed as day to day, But then again,
aren't we all. Nebraska running back Ramiir Johnson is out
(31:37):
this week as he works through concussion protocol. The rest
of the Huskers injury updates are good. Defensive back Deshaun
Singleton will play against Ohio State. And then this is
a great name. Defensive lineman Nash Hutmocker is good to
go after missing part of the previous game with Indiana.
Nash Hutmocker. Okay, that's just the name, isn't it. A
(31:59):
few years of back, years back, Nash hut Morocker, Alabama
had a defensive lineman whose name was d Liner. The
defensive lineman named d Liner. Wow, you go further back.
Pitt had a placekicker, Chris blew It. Oh, I know, remember, yeah,
(32:22):
Chris blew It was the place kicker. I mean, go through,
go through, play football and at that position. And that's
your last name, blew It. I know, I know, that's
what I called Wittenberg games back in the in the nineties,
Windenburg had a defensive back from Cleveland. He was a
dB and his last name was Pickett.
Speaker 4 (32:44):
Oh nice, that's yeah, the defensive back.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
You can't make that up. That just writes itself. Yeah,
it does, doesn't It does, doesn't it? But that was
always my favorites. Chris Blewett d liner on the defensive line.
Nebraska quarterback Dilan Royola is fine and will be a
good to go. He was dinged up a little bit
in the loss to Indiana last weekend, as I think
a lot of Hoosiers were in that game, or a
(33:10):
lot of corn Huskers were in that game. It's interesting
now these days, and this just shows you. I think
the impact that wagering has that colleges now have to
put out an injury report. It's now public knowledge that
so and so is not playing and that and I
guarantee a lot of it has to do because of
the the betting aspects.
Speaker 4 (33:30):
Of the gambling.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
It all. It has to be. It has to do
because before I mean, heck, there are some schools and
I think Michigan still might still do this. I haven't
checked on this, but for those of you who don't know,
when you're in the media, and you're putting together like
for example, we those of those who do play by
play schools put out game notes. They give you about
(33:51):
forty five or fifty pages of information on their team,
which includes a starting too deep every week. Now, it
used to be that everybody would print those out. You'd
get to the game and there'd be seven eight copies
of all that waiting for you in your broadcast location.
Well now most schools don't even bother to print them out.
Now it's just if you want to look at you
(34:11):
gotta look at it online, which is okay, I mean,
that's not a big deal. But Michigan in past years,
Jim Harbaugh, they would not print it too deep. They
would never list their too deep. They just yeah, as
a play by play guy, you're like, okay, what are
we supposed to do?
Speaker 5 (34:28):
Just guess, Yeah, you're just free wheeling out there exactly
Jim went on up there.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
But yeah, they would they would not put out a
too deep just wouldn't do it. And some other schools
took the same thing. And to find out what was
going on with the team's injury situation, I mean it
almost took a search warrant or a subpoena to force
them to tell you what was going on. They just
they just wouldn't do it. And and there are still
(35:01):
schools to this day that won't do that, that won't
tell you what's going on. They'll say lower body injury
or I mean, that could be anything from a broken
little toad to an ankle twist or a knee. It
could be anything. But they do their best to just
to keep that under wraps. And these days, with information
(35:23):
so readily available everywhere, I just it's hard to I think,
let the word try to keep the word quiet. And
so and so is not playing, or this this this
kid isn't playing, or so on and so forth. You
just and that's what I'll say about uh. And this
is my first year working with Tim Alban at Ohio
(35:43):
as their head football coach. He's up front, he'll tell you.
He'll just simply tell you, yeah, Like Ohio has lost
its leading rusher, Trey tyas running back in the Max
leading rusher. He's out for a number of weeks now
lower left ankle with a left ankle injury. Suffered it
at Miami on Sorurday. Tim was up front, Yep, not
gonna play what I got seen for a few weeks. Now.
Most coaches say, well, we'll see he's day to day.
(36:05):
But I mean it, you're not fooling anybody when you
walk out on the field if young man's standing there
on crutches, which no, he's not, he's not playing.
Speaker 4 (36:13):
Sure sure, sure fire away to figure that out.
Speaker 2 (36:17):
Yeah, exactly. And there are I mean, I'll tell you
this too. There are some high schools, and there are
a number in this state that you call them and
ask if you're doing a game a week of you
ask for a roster, you might as well be asking
them for their their lifetime savings. I mean, it's it's
gonna be hard to get it from them. And some
(36:40):
I had. I had a coach a couple of weeks back,
send me a roster, I asked. I always call the
week of the games. I do games of high school
games on TV and Columbus on Friday nights. And one
of the coaches of the games we were doing, I called,
I always reach out plenty of time, email, text messages.
I have just about every high school coaches text message
or a phone number, so I can text, we can
(37:01):
talk all right, Hey, can you send me your starting lineup. Well,
I got a starting lineup, but it was just a
list of twenty two guys, no position, no offense, defense,
It was twenty two guys here are starters.
Speaker 5 (37:16):
You don't even know if those guys actually go to
the school. It's like big.
Speaker 2 (37:18):
BIRDI nine guys. He could have been twenty two guys
he found in the phone book. Yeah, exactly, fro I
know George Washington will be there for those of you
who are curious. A phone book is something you used
to go through to find people's phone numbers.
Speaker 4 (37:29):
Oh my gosh, but but.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
Yeah, it just I that that mentality of trying to
keep everything so secret, we can't let anybody know. It's
so so nineteen seventies, eighties, eighties, nineties, Yeah, something like that.
It's nothing, not all that long ago. A right, three
forty five at the time. We update you on our
(37:55):
fan polls when we come back as well too. It's
the press box with you on this Thursday, Fox Sports nine.
Speaker 1 (38:30):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
three seven by three one six, one seven zero the
press box on Fox Sports nine eighty w ONI three
forty nine.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
As we roll along with you here on this Thursday.
Thanks agetting to Tim Alcorn to play by a play
voice the Cleveland Cavaliers for visiting with us earlier in
the hour. We always appreciate Tim's input in the conversations
that he has with Kelly. When Tim comes on, I
might as well I be on the show. Well as
let's turn over to Tim and Kelly let them go.
Speaker 5 (38:59):
It's this jealousy is while they're flattering. No, I know
Tim's great. I even when you mentioned, I think last
week or earlier this week, that we were gonna have
Tim on, I was like, Oh, I love Tim.
Speaker 4 (39:13):
Tim's great.
Speaker 5 (39:14):
He's He's always very complimentary, and you know he knows
what he's talking about. Also, I love basketball, and I don't.
I personally don't think we talk enough basketball. So anytime
Tim's on, I know I'm gonna get the real deal.
And I appreciate that.
Speaker 2 (39:30):
Well, I'm sure Dave SECOUTI would disagree with you. Yeah,
now he'll call.
Speaker 5 (39:37):
In exactly a little less complimentary, exactly exactly.
Speaker 2 (39:46):
We have a couple of fan polls up for you today.
Number one, what should the Cleveland Browns do with quarterback
Deshaun Watson done for the rest of the season. Should
they just move on from him, keep him as a backup,
or let's wait till he gets healthy then decide what
to do with it. And right now, let's just move
on ninety two percent of the vote. I think everybody's
pretty much just just done done with Yeah. Also, yeah,
(40:10):
very much so. Also a hive stake. Coach Ryan Day
says he's quote not happy about anything right now with
his football team, after the loss of Oregon and the
bye week, which was supposed to be an improvement week.
Speaker 4 (40:23):
Yep, that's what they call it.
Speaker 2 (40:24):
Still not happy. We're asking today, do you agree? I
fully agree, I'm not happy. Somewhat still a good team. No,
it's still the best team. I don't agree with that,
and I'm not happy with him right now. Sixty seven
percent of you're going with somewhat, it's still a good
football team.
Speaker 4 (40:42):
Is anyone not happy with him?
Speaker 2 (40:44):
Oh? There are few who aren't happy with which is
just remarkable because it always falls back into that, well
who you gonna get?
Speaker 4 (40:50):
Yeah, I mean he wins games, guys, I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (40:53):
Yeah. A couple of responses online. Rick says, I'll be
happy with Watson gone. It's not my money, that's being wasted,
not going to see him. I get ads. Ohio State
is still a good team, Still happy with them. Checked
back after Penn State, and I ass you was what
was typed out?
Speaker 4 (41:14):
They don't play all issues, I know, but I mean
that's what I assume.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
Maybe it's Indiana, maybe met Indiana.
Speaker 4 (41:19):
Oh, Indiana State, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (41:21):
I don't they'll play Indiana State either, so it's okay.
Maybe it meant Indiana, which which is fine because that's
I mean as of right now, that's that's a big game. Yeah,
with the Indiana so U. But yeah, thanks for the responses.
We appreciate that. We always love hearing your responses as
well too, so thank you. My daughter is out running
(41:42):
some errands after school. She stopped by the house a
couple of minutes ago and brought in the remnants of
a pizza she had today and it's somewhat it's not cold,
but it's not warm either, And the first reaction was, well,
we have to if you want to eat it, you
gotta put it in the microwave. No, you don't know,
you don't you just take it right out of the
box and eat it. Pizzas There was nothing wrong with
(42:02):
nothing wrong with cold pizza.
Speaker 5 (42:04):
Yeah, that you can eat hot or cold. And it
was there a.
Speaker 2 (42:08):
Show called that on cold pizza.
Speaker 5 (42:11):
They have that was that called the Old Old Show.
I say Old Old. It's like, you know that's your era.
Speaker 2 (42:17):
You've probably had forty seven shows on in the morning. Yeah,
at some point or another. I don't watch any of them.
That's something I don't want to get sidetracked from the pizza.
Speaker 4 (42:32):
Are we in Mudgeons Corner, Marty?
Speaker 2 (42:34):
No, all that would be that would be if if
if I had to put the pizza in the marketwave,
then I would get But no, you don't. You just
eat the pizza out of the box. It's fine that way.
It's like, uh, my wife puts peanut butter in the refrigerator.
I don't understand that. I just simply don't understand that
(42:56):
peanut butter is okay to put in the cabinet. It's
easy to get out of the jar. Number one to
spread on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in which,
by the way, is strawberry jelly. Not great? But if
you strawberry jelly.
Speaker 5 (43:09):
Now, so your wife is real cool. I like a
lot of things about her, but that is definitely a strike.
That's a strike.
Speaker 2 (43:14):
Again, I haven't quite figured that one out yet. We
had a couple of interesting discussions about that, so you
can tell what our relationship is. And our biggest discussion
is peanut butter and jelly and cold pizza.
Speaker 5 (43:25):
That's honestly dreamy, dreaming people would pay for those sort
of relationship problems.
Speaker 2 (43:30):
Well, I'm just lucky that I'm allowed the back door
most of the time. After the way I've well, never.
Speaker 5 (43:38):
Mind, So what do you make of yes, So what
do you make of Ryan Day not being happy with
quote anything. It's not even the Usually a coach will
be like, you know, we got to do X, Y
and Z a little better, but I love how the
defenses or I love how the offense.
Speaker 4 (43:55):
You know, we got to move. But he said everything
is bad.
Speaker 2 (44:00):
Yeah, I'm not happy with anything right now. And I
I watched him say that, and the look on his
face was one of a coach whose team had lost
a game by one point to another very good football
team on the road. It wasn't one of complete and
utter disgust. It was just, yeah, I'm not happy with
(44:23):
anything right now. And I think he knows if he
would have came out and said, you know what, I
still like a lot about our football team even though
we lost. Ohio States fans, who I mean, let's face it,
the sky's a different color in their world most of
the time, probably would have taken that the wrong way. Oh,
you're happy we lost. Come on, what are you talking about.
(44:43):
So I think he has to kind of measure his responses,
and I think it's okay to say, yeah, I'm not
happy to anything right now. And I think the fan
base that kind of deflects a lot of that if
he'd have walked in there. I always heard this said.
I've had number number football coaches tell me this. If
(45:05):
you look at like team pictures of football teams, nobody smiles. Yeah,
And you know, and you know what the running theory
is for that is that coaches know that that's the
picture that will get put in the paper if you
lose sixty five nothing so and so coach Bob Smith,
(45:25):
they lost to whatever, and then you can have a
picture of smile on his face. Everybody's gonna think, hey, wait,
why are you so happy? So they just they just
don't smile. That is running. It's been kind of like
the unwritten rule. You know, you don't smile. And if
you go back and look at it, most coaches aren't
smiling in their pictures, like their team photos. It's not
(45:47):
a smile or it's just kind of a just a
bland I'm here.
Speaker 4 (45:50):
Very straight faced.
Speaker 2 (45:51):
Yeah, but I've had I've had number of coaches tell
me that, because that's that's the picture that gets put
in the paper after you lose seventy five to three
to your biggest ride. Exactly, it would be of a
big happy smile on your face. Hey goodness, see, hey,
how are you well? No, when I'm putting that in
a paper, we're not going that way. So I have
absolutely no idea where I was at with it. Thinking
(46:14):
about I started thinking about pizza, so my mind obviously
goes and it goes in another direction. Oh, the ESPN shows,
I don't watch any of that, any of those things.
What is it? The only time I've seen get up
with what's his name, Mike Greenberg is when I'm stopping
to get gas it pops on at one of the
gas station pumps. That's the time I've ever seen that.
(46:36):
Ip is a BP. I think Speedway has it on theirs. Yeah,
Speedway has it on theirs. But that's another Curmudgeons corner
that we could do about. Start stopping to get gas here,
I'm just spinning off again. It's it's my show. What
the heck, squirrel? No question? But that's it. When you're
stopping to get gas. I don't want forty seven questions.
(46:58):
Do you want a car wash? Do you want to
go to? Do you want to have?
Speaker 5 (47:01):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (47:02):
Do you want to save two cents on a on
a on a car wash? You want to do this?
Just let me get to the gas. That's what I'm
there for. I'm not there to play truth or there
truth or consequences or show or anything. Just let me
buy my gas.
Speaker 4 (47:18):
They don't want that.
Speaker 5 (47:19):
They want they want you to spend even more money,
no matter how high gas prices get. They want you
to spend even more money when you go there.
Speaker 3 (47:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (47:27):
Well, and I don't know that. That's frustrating, that's frustrating. Yeah,
I just just let me pump my gas. That's all
I want to do. And the other thing while we're
on this, this is this is kind of fun to do.
While I'm on this, I've been saving these upcod When
(47:49):
when you're online and you click on something and you
go to somebody's website. I don't want to answer forty
seven questions about what kind of job you're doing. I
don't care if you're trying to pay a bill, Hey
tell us how we did today with all your customer
service and yah yah YadA. I don't want to do that.
I just want to pay my bill. I just want
(48:09):
to do this.
Speaker 4 (48:10):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (48:11):
I can't stand the survey as well, because they don't
really want my honest answer.
Speaker 2 (48:15):
No, I couldn't care what you think.
Speaker 5 (48:19):
I would have been a lot better if you would
have just gave me this electricity without me having to
pay it every mind.
Speaker 2 (48:25):
Thank you. Our power was out the other night here
where I live, for about four hours because a my
lar balloon hit the power line. We yeah, and that's
an actual thing. A mylar balloon hit the power line.
Speaker 4 (48:42):
You've got to be better and knock your power out.
It's only four hours.
Speaker 2 (48:45):
It's only twenty twenty four, all right, that last third,
but I apologize, just a lot of ramblings at that point.
It's a four o'clock. Thankfully it's the press back. We're
back next hour with a well a lot of things.
It's the breath Blox Fox Sports nine eighty w O eight.
Speaker 1 (49:38):
Welcome to the press Box with Marty Banister, the latest
on all local sports from Wright State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine three seven by three, one six,
one seven zero the press Box on Fox Sports nine
(49:59):
eighty w ow any.
Speaker 2 (50:01):
I'm not getting not happy with anything right now. It's
the coach's job to make sure that we put our
players in a situation and environment to be successful. So
that's the first thing we got to look at. That's
Ryan Day not happy with anything right now with his
Ohio State football team. Welcome back to the press Box
Fox Sports nine to eighty w O and am Marty
Banners are great to have you with us here this afternoon.
Kelly B's producing the program and worth you right up
(50:22):
until five o'clock this hour. Ron Brunswick from WCSM Radio
up in the northwest central part of the state will
visit with us. He will be on the play by
play tomorrow night at one of the signature games in
high school football all across the state of Ohio. Tomorrow night.
That will be the big Mariyan Local Cold Water game,
which will decide the Midwest Athletic Conference championship up marrying
Local wins. It will be their fifty eighth straight victory
(50:45):
five to eight. Fifty eighth straight. Remarkable, And yeah, and
Ronald join esn't give us a preview of that game,
because really, when you look at the Midwest Athletic Conference
and what that league does, you go their website and
the first thing you see are the number of state
(51:05):
championships that league has won, not only in football, but
in track, baseball, volleyball. If they had lacrosse, they'd probably
be winning state championships in lacrosse in the Midwest Athletic Conference, baseball, softball.
You just go up and down the line, and those
(51:25):
schools who, if you put them all together, would probably
be about the size of Mason or Centerville or both
of the Lakota's further south of here in terms of enrollment,
because they're all Divisions six, Division seven schools. So just
(51:47):
the ability to do what they do each and every
year is just phenomenal. Ronald join us coming up at
about four to twenty, we'll talk about that. So look
afford to that visit. A couple things update you on
if you're headed to the Ohio State Penn State game
in State College and November. The second. State College is
notoriously a difficult place to get into driving flying. However,
(52:10):
it's going to be even worse this time when the
two teams play. Donald Trump is going to be at
the game. He has a rally in State College, and
then will be going to the Ohio State Penn State game,
which is four days before the election, So get ready
for that. That will be that will make things even
(52:33):
more chaotic surrounding that game, which could be chaotic in
its own right because of the importance that we'll have
on the college football season. Penn State wins, they could
conceivably knock or put Ohio State on the precipice of
not making the playoff. Are you imagine that?
Speaker 4 (52:49):
Yeah, that's always.
Speaker 5 (52:51):
It's always whenever any any like higher up, secret serviced
member of whoever goes to these events. It's just so
much hassle. And it's not even like for everyone else.
It's the traffic. I cannot stand traffic.
Speaker 2 (53:10):
And again, yeah, you're right exactly well, and going into
State College, Yeah, there's already believably unbelievably bad because of
how small that it is exactly and right in the
middle of this town of about it's about the size
of Oxford if to help you out, eighteen twenty five
(53:31):
thousand total. Well, I mean the tallest structure in the
town is Beaver Stadium. Yeah, where Penn State Place. That's
the tall structure in the town. So and at times
in the past I think it's I forget the state,
I think it's two nineteen. I think that goes into
State College North and South. I think in the past
(53:55):
what they've done to help alleviate the traffic is they
make it coming in going out on game day, both
sides go north. They just turned to traving around and
everybody tried to get out to try to help alleviate
some of the traffic and everything, but it's a mess
getting in there. Again, this is not a political rant
or anything on those lines, but Kelly, you hit it
(54:15):
right on the money when you talked about when these
type of people appear at these type of events, what
it does. It stretches the oh goodness, the whole logistical
aspect of those things to a level that a game
like this because of the importance of it will already
(54:37):
be off the charts. It's going to be even worse now.
And I can tell you this the press box at
Penn State, where a lot of people will be and
that will also ramp up because there are a lot
of press who cover this candidate will be there as
well too. That's going to make it even worse in
(54:59):
that press box to get anything done. The Penn State sideline,
and I've said this before from my years working on
the Ohio State games on this island, the Penn State
sidelines are worse than the Big ten night and close,
not even close. As used to joke, Well, no, but
all you have we always used to joke, all you
have to have to get on the sideline at Penn
state's a face all you need, because I mean it's
(55:26):
five and six deep of people and it's just it's
a circuit. Maybe they've cleaned it up. It's been The
last time I was there was ooh, twenty fifteen. I
think it was twenty fifteen, twenty fifteen, twenty fourteen, last
time I was there. But we just dreaded it. You
just dreaded going over there because it was just a
nightmare the facilities were outdated, they had they had not
(55:49):
done anything to increase the And again, as I've said
before a number of times, how we in the media
have to work and cover things doesn't matter to anybody.
It's nobody, it's not it. I'm just but I'm just.
My win to all this is it's just very hard
to do your job there because it's outdated. The whole
thing is outdated. And now you're going to throw this
(56:09):
into that on that day. Wow, and that's that's the
big noon game that day that's already been established, that's
going to kick off at noon. It's just gonna be
a complete another circus. And you see sometimes two where
people complain about, for example, if a if a president
(56:30):
doesn't go to a site of a disaster, well, the
reasons for that are pretty simple. That's the last thing
these people need at these sites of these disasters is
all this extra added rigamarole of these people trying to
come in so they can walk through and get a
photo op. I mean, if you're at Katrina Gee, George
(56:52):
Boys got railed for not going to New Orleans, but
for for flying over it. Well that if you think
about it, that made that made all the sense in
the world by flying over it and looking at it
instead of trying to put him down right in the
middle of all that mess. You gotta have security, you
gotta have first responders, all these people. Then they got
to they gotta stop what they're doing to make sure
(57:14):
the most important person on the planet can walk through
and smile and wave.
Speaker 5 (57:19):
It.
Speaker 2 (57:19):
Just people overlook that so often when they rip on
a presidential candidate or a politician or a governor or
whomever for not going into these disaster sites. I mean,
if you're a first responder and you're trying to save
people's lives, do you want to have to spend forty
minutes clearing out of space so this guy can come
in and walk around or this candidate can commit. No, No,
(57:42):
it's silly, but that's what happens in these things. So
it's but again, so get ready for that. You'll have
that to look forward to when you go to the
to the appentch State Ohio's day game. On November the second, also,
DeAndre Hopkins had his first press conference as a member
of the Kansas City Chiefs. Today Chiefs trading him requiring
him to trade with Tennessee and how about this little
(58:05):
wasn't even a thinly veiled shot at Tennessee. DeAndre Hopkins
started at his press conference by saying, quote, I haven't
played meaningful football in a couple of years. Well, he's
not wrong, he's not wrong. But here you go and
think about this too. He goes from a franchise with
(58:27):
one ineffective, inaccurate quarterback to another one with an a
not ineffective but inaccurate quarterback. Patrick Mahomes leaves the NFL
an interception with seven.
Speaker 4 (58:38):
It's true, it's true.
Speaker 2 (58:41):
Or he's right where he's close to being tied with
I think Baker Mayfield through a couple on Monday Night.
Speaker 5 (58:44):
Didn't he's The difference, though, is that Patrick Mahomes and
the Kansas City Chiefs are six and out. But honestly,
this does scare me because Patrick Mahomes has been playing
with a bunch of no disrespect but also rans as
a wide receiver and now bone afide and it's like
(59:05):
we were The Chiefs have already been so annoying to
me as a team.
Speaker 4 (59:10):
You you, I know, I just I like to I
would like to see someone mix it up. I would
love to see the Lions make a run.
Speaker 5 (59:17):
I feel like after I was so devastated by Aiden
Hutchinson Hutchinson's injury, because it really feels like this could
be the Lions moment. Uh, But then there's the Kansas
City Chiefs and now they just got a bona fide
wide receiver. It feels like it doesn't matter. It feels
like Marty could check into the game. He's gonna get
three receptions, twenty five yards a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (59:38):
The last place you would ever find me is running
across the middle of an NFL defense. That is the
last place you'll ever find me. Oh my goodness. I
trouble enough just posting up on the block in high
school basketball.
Speaker 3 (59:53):
You think about.
Speaker 2 (59:55):
Not doing that, not doing that, but yeah, it's but yeah,
but that's that's just common. I haven't played meaningful football
in a couple of years.
Speaker 5 (01:00:02):
Yeah, I mean, and he gets to go to an
organization that only talks about one thing, and that is
the super Bowl. It's not about the playoffs, it's not
about statistics, none of that. That's honestly, I'm really happy
for him because he's never been with a team this good.
And I like when great players get to play with
great teams.
Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
How many you go back over the years and look
how many great players never had this type of opportunity.
So many with Oh my goodness, I mean Ernie Banks,
Andre Dawson. I mean, you can just start going down
the list of great players who never had this opportunity.
Joe Thomas with the Cleveland Browns, one of the best
offensive linemen to ever lace them up, played with some
(01:00:44):
horrendous football teams, never had the opportunity to go play
for a team like this. Yeah, I mean you think
some of those guys, they would just in a heartbeat,
they would take that opportunity.
Speaker 5 (01:00:56):
Especially heart beat once, I mean once you have your money.
And I think one of the best things about this
is that DeAndre Hopkins didn't have to choose between making
his money and getting to play for a great team.
Speaker 4 (01:01:06):
That's really rare.
Speaker 5 (01:01:08):
Usually it's like in the twilight of your career and
you're like, well, I've made one hundred million dollars, I'll
go take a veteran minimum to be on a winning squad.
It's awesome. I'm very happy for him. Unhappy because it's
the Chiefs.
Speaker 2 (01:01:21):
But I kind of wish it would have been to
It would have sent him to the NFC.
Speaker 4 (01:01:25):
But sure, sure, sure, I mean, you know the Ravens
even I don't know.
Speaker 5 (01:01:30):
Oh no, no, no, sorry, I'm sorry, sorry sorry, no offense, So.
Speaker 2 (01:01:34):
Don't do that. Good enough as it is. Two fan
polls up with for you to vote on. We're asking
you watching the Cleveland Browns do with quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Is it time to move on from him? Keep him
as a backup or wait till he gets healthy then decide?
Ninety one percent say time to move on. We'll hip
if they Coach Ryan Day says he's quote not happy
about anything right now with this football team. Do you
(01:01:55):
agree right now? Sixty four percent of you say I
somewhat agree. It's still a good football team. We're gonna
be okay. Buckeyes have Nebraska on Saturday. Left tackle Josh
Simmons done for the season for the Buckeyes, but they
should get Lathan Ransom back on defense. When we come back,
we'll talk about one of the big high school football
games in the area. Ron Brunswick, the play by playboys
(01:02:17):
from WCSM Radio, will join us and talk about Mariot
Local and Cold Water. It's next on the press box.
Fox Sports nine eighty w Olne.
Speaker 1 (01:02:38):
Get on the press box, called Marty now at nine
to three, seven by three, one, six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty wn eighty and.
Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
Back with you here on this Thursday afternoon. Welcome back
to the press box Fox Sports nine eighty w Olne.
I'm Marty Banister. We are so glad you're with us
here this afternoon. We talked sports with you. We talked
yesterday about one of the big games in the area
and that is, of course, the match up tomorrow night
between Tip and Xenia in the Miami Valley League, matching
a pair of unbeaten teams as they score off for
(01:03:12):
the championship of the Miami Valley League. While there's also
a pretty big game coming up tomorrow night in high
school football, really with statewide recognition and state wide attention
on it. It's the Merria Local Cold Water Game. There
are so many things surrounding that game. And of the
line with us right now visiting with us is Safftero
and he'll be on the call tomorrow night is Ron
Brunswick and Ron Cold Waters at seven and Oh Mary
(01:03:34):
Locals at seven and oh both are nine to oh overall,
is there any way to underscore number one, what this
game means in the Midwest Athletic Conference, because obviously I
think both are both are headed to the playoffs right now, obviously,
but what does this game mean to the mac?
Speaker 3 (01:03:49):
Kay?
Speaker 1 (01:03:49):
What is that?
Speaker 6 (01:03:50):
Well, everybody wants scoring the Mac, There's no doubt about that.
These two teams are squared up. It seems like almost
every year, and that's stretching the truth a little bit,
But now four straight years it comes down to the
final game. The Flyers have dominated the last couple of years,
thirty five fourteen, last year thirty five nothing the year before.
So these kids that are playing for Cold Water up,
(01:04:11):
they would like one more shot at Marion Local And
obviously they won't get it in the postseason as Marion
Local obviously a Division seventeen, co Water a D six,
both ranked number one in their respective divisions this week.
But everything goes through this game. It seems like every
year it's just a game that even if they were
(01:04:32):
five and four, I think it's a big game on
the schedule.
Speaker 2 (01:04:35):
Well, when was the last time Mary Local was five
and four? Ron? Have they ever been five and four?
Speaker 6 (01:04:40):
For about eighteen. Maybe they did have one year in there.
I got Tim Goodwin's record somewhere in here. He actually
had one losing season in his tenure. I don't know
where it's at in my notes here, but yeah, it
hasn't happened very often, Marty. That's what darn sure they
all they do is winning. Rie is dying right now.
Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
Remarkable. I had their state championship game last year when
they rolled past Dalton and it wasn't The final score
wasn't as close as the final score showed me. They
just rolled easily in that It's a program that the
success has been remarkable. But you can look up and
down ron the Midwest Athletic Conference, and I think is
it fair to say that just about every school in
(01:05:22):
that league, maybe not to the depth that Marion Locals
run has been but they've all had runs of success
like not again, not of this link, but they've all
had runs of success, haven't they.
Speaker 3 (01:05:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:05:35):
Well, and officially I'd have to dig out my notes.
I think nine out of ten have picked up state
championships over the years, and how many three or four years? Again,
I wish I had a few more records in front
of me. We get closer to the tournament, we start
digging this stuff out. But three or four times they've
had three teams in the state finals two or three years,
and maybe three of them they picked up state championships
(01:05:58):
at three different levels. Yeah, success goes from top to bottom,
no doubt about that. You don't want to have a
down year if you're playing in the Midwest out of
the conference.
Speaker 2 (01:06:06):
Absolutely. Ron Brunswill got on the line with us. He'll
have the call tomorrow night the Coldwater Marion local game,
which will decide the Midwest Athletic Conference championship. Ron I've
always joked that it's in the OHSA constitution that schools
in the MAC either have to play for or win
a state championship every year, regardless of the sport. That's
the other part about this league that's just so remarkable,
(01:06:27):
the size of the communities, the consistent success. It's really
unequal across the state. What is there a different mindset
in the Midwest Athletic Conference.
Speaker 6 (01:06:38):
I think expectations have a lot to do with it.
I think the kids get on the court, the field,
onto the track wherever they jumped into they're expected to win.
The community expects of them win, and maybe more importantly,
if they expect to win as well their coaches. I've
got great coaches in the area, got great parents in
the area, got great teachers in the area. I think
(01:06:58):
all that stuff goes a great around together. A whole
good balance of a lot of good stuff makes a
whole lot of good people. And I'm sure that's throughout
the state, by the way, but we really see it here.
These kids work hard, and they expect to win on
Friday night or Saturday night, or Tuesday morning or whenever
they put the pads on or get the basketball out ron.
Speaker 2 (01:07:20):
What is a Friday night in the MAC like football wise,
regardless of what game you're doing, what is a Friday
night like a.
Speaker 6 (01:07:28):
Friday night, Well, there's normally a marquee matchup. When you
start looking early in the year, it's kind of tough
to tell. We can tell in the summer we think
this team's going to be good, this team's going to
be maybe better than last year, etc.
Speaker 3 (01:07:40):
Etc.
Speaker 6 (01:07:41):
But once we get into the second, third, fourth week,
we start seeing state rankings. They start messing around with
that computer stuff, and now we see teams that are
being very successful, and almost every night we got a
marquee matchup. We got number two against number three, or
number five against number two, whatever it may be. So
it doesn't matter how we line up. And as we said,
(01:08:02):
if you're struggling a little bit, it's really a tough
situation to be put in because you're going to struggle
for three, four, five, six straight games because you may
play a state ranked team six games in a row.
That's a possibility, and we're seeing that this year. I
mean the state rankings right now, maryon Local number one,
Minster number four, you got Sandry number sixteen. You slide
(01:08:22):
in Division six co Water the number one ranked team.
You got the Anni Rockets number ten. So those are
five state ranked teams that many of these teams play
on their schedule. That you could play five weeks in
a row, that makes it real difficult if you happen
to be in a down year.
Speaker 2 (01:08:38):
You touched on this a moment ago. When the years
where there have been three MAX schools playing for a
championship or two go there and win when they get
the canton. I think the last thing ron a lot
of coaches outside the MAC want to see when the
tournament draw is announced is a MAC team on the
other side of the bracket.
Speaker 6 (01:08:57):
Then there's no doubt about that, and unfortuate like if
you go to D seven, there's going to be about
four or five of those. If you have to be
in Region number twenty eight, you can't hardly dodge them
two weeks in a row. I think they're hoping those
coaches to take it a step farther, hoping that maybe
say a New Breaming and say Henry, they could match
up in round one. That would be perfect for other coaches.
(01:09:20):
That's one team that you won't have to face, or
a Marion Local might face a Minster and maybe the
regional semis instead of the regional finals. Again, the way
things draw up, it's kind of all speculation right now,
but I think those coaches would all like to dodge
an MAC opponent as long as possible.
Speaker 2 (01:09:37):
Coldwater right now, a top Division six, Region twenty four
as we head to the game tomorrow night, they have
clinched a home game and the number one seed going
into that matchup tomorrow night to Marry Locals top of
Region twenty eight of Division seven, and they also have
clinched a home game. Well, Tim Goodwin's team, what they
have done when I watched them last year and they
(01:09:58):
were very underclass heavy. They started a number of juniors.
I think it even started some sophomores. Last year. They
had maybe I think it was two or three seniors
or something of that small number that played key minutes
and were starters on the team last year. I'm looking
at their numbers right now. Ron. They've tossed six shutouts
this year, the last four games in a row. No
(01:10:20):
one has scored more than nine points against them in
a game. Is it fair to ask just how good
is this team?
Speaker 3 (01:10:28):
This defense?
Speaker 6 (01:10:29):
It's very, very deep. I've had the pleasure of watching
them in like five different times this year. It's not
just their defense. Their offense is just as good as
their defense. But what was that sprech with the defense?
They give up about fifty five yards on the ground,
they give up about sixty six yards through the air.
Those are all tops in the MAAC only one hundred
and twenty four yards a game. You mentioned all those shutouts.
(01:10:52):
It's just something that they do each time, and they've
played I wrote this down here. I want to share it.
The running clock eight out of nine games this year,
and there's a lot of times quarter number two. Their
second and third stringers are mixing and matching with their
first stringers, and I think that's what makes them strong
year in and year out. These guys, these underclassmen. In fact,
(01:11:15):
tomorrow night, approximately eight or nine of the guys on
offense will be seniors. About nine or ten of the
guys on defense will be seniors. But if you watch
the game, maybe at the end of the first quarter,
beginning of the second quarter, you're going to see a
couple of juniors. You're going to see a couple of
soupomores mixing and matching. And Tim Goodwin and his staff
they've done that now for twenty years, where where they're
(01:11:36):
just throwing guys at you, they never get worn out.
Some guys go both ways, but they never play whole
games both ways, and I think that gives them such
an advantage. And they got athletes, not only on the
defensive side. You mentioned defense, their offense just as good
as that defense. They've been over forty eight different times
this year, averaging forty seven and a half a football game.
(01:11:58):
And you talk about dominating first halfs will be interesting
barronight in the first half. Numbers for Mary and Local
three hundred and forty two points in the first two quarters,
and they've given up ten. On the cold Water side,
they've scored two hundred and thirty nine points in the
first two quarters and they've given up forty one. Now
something has to break tomorrow night with those two trends.
Speaker 2 (01:12:19):
That's just those are staggering numbers, Ron, I mean, those
really are. That just shows you how dominant both these
teams have been. Remaining moments with Ron bruns Well, he'll
be on the radio play by a play called Tomorrow Night,
really one of the best games in the state of
Ohio on Friday. Cold Water and Marry Local meet at
mary and Local tomorrow night. We've talked a lot about
the Flyers, but we can overlook what chip Otten has
done at cold Water, and you mentioned some of the
(01:12:40):
numbers they've had, Well, they're nine to zero going into
this when they pretty much run rough shot of everybody
they have played this year. The lone exception was a
twenty four to twenty one win over Minster. That's the
one thing that's impressed me so much about both these teams, Ron,
is the fact that even though they do have a
close game once in a while, that consistency of just
(01:13:02):
putting people away is so impressive. And that's something that
Chip Otton's program, and they've done that for years, haven't they.
Speaker 6 (01:13:08):
Yeah, well, he's got two or two wins. He knows
what he's doing over there. Got a great staff, He's
had a consistent staff in both these teams. The same
guys have helped coach Goodwin and the same guys helped
coach Outon for a long long time. But you mentioned Minster.
I just want to make a point there that Minster
Wildcats played Marion last week, Marion Local twenty one. Nothing there.
They gave Mary and all they wanted. I did that game.
(01:13:30):
Marion scored seven in each and every quarter, and you
mentioned the Kwaterminster. Minster actually let halftime in that game,
fourteen to seven. They get a late field goal from
Bryce cou Show from about thirty five forty yards with
about a minut and had to go to clintch At
victory twenty four to twenty one. So both these teams,
I don't want to say they've struggled with Minster, but
they battled with Minster. Another really good program in our area.
(01:13:51):
By the way, but you mentioned Chip Houghton two hundred wins.
The Cavaliers is an interesting note as well. They've got
nineteen MAC football titles, Marriyon Locals got seventeen, But for
Cold Water they've not had an MAAC football title since
twenty sixteen. And I'm sure somebody over in Cold Water
has shared that information for some of those juniors and teens.
Speaker 2 (01:14:13):
I bet they have. And probably one of the biggest
reasons for that would just happen to be marrying Local,
would it not.
Speaker 6 (01:14:19):
Paul, no doubt about that. The Flyers have dominated since
two thousand. They've coach Goodwin is what I got. Two
more numbers. I kind of dug up numbers when I
had a chance to talk to the here. Co Water's
won two hundred and ninety nine games since two thousand,
marrying Local three hundred and eighteen. That's just unbelievable. That's
over six hundred wins. And together they haven't lost one
(01:14:42):
hundred games since two thousand. Cole Water's lost forty five
and marrying Local forty seven. So these two programs have
been dominant since the two thousand mark.
Speaker 2 (01:14:51):
That's just staggering. When I was working on the Ohio
State Radio broadcast, Jim leashe our color analyst on the games,
and still the color antos on the games. Whenever we
would start talking high school football, he would always just
slam everybody down right away by saying, simply Saint Henry
because that's where he went and where he played. And
again they're in the Midwest Athletic Conference and there they've
(01:15:11):
had their run of success as well too. But that
shows you the overall pride, does it not run that
everybody has in that league?
Speaker 6 (01:15:18):
Well, you know what, you watch a football game, and
you may even see this at the stadium when you
do the state finals. Soon as that game's over. The
number one chance we hear it doesn't matter if it's
Cowater playing or Minster playing or Mary Local playing, is
Mac Mac throughout the whole student section. The adults yelled out,
there's a lot of pride in this conference, not only
(01:15:40):
in football, but for example, last night did a volleyball
game co Water and Sandry played. Co Water's rank number
one in the state, sentary number two and they're playing
a district championship game. And I don't want to say
it was a sold out crowd for a volleyball game,
but there was a whole bunch of people that were
over at Van werk just a lot of pride in
the Midwest.
Speaker 3 (01:16:00):
L Econference Ron.
Speaker 2 (01:16:02):
From a broadcaster standpoint, I've called a lot of big games.
I know you're excited about this when it doesn't get
much better than this, I know you're probably already excited,
aren't you.
Speaker 6 (01:16:10):
Oh, I can't wait for a game like this, And
as I said, you kind of anticipate at the beginning
of the year. You look at the schedule, it's spend
like this the last couple of years. Marion Local and
Coldwater are playing the last game of the year. They
both got They're loaded with seniors. I mentioned Marion Local
about eighteen seniors will start them both sides of the ball.
Cole Water not a whole lot different. They'll start eight
or nine seniors on the offensive side. If their starting
(01:16:32):
lineup is what I think it's going to be, they'll
have ten seniors starting on the defensive side. So two
programs that will be playing their last regular season game.
Speaker 3 (01:16:41):
It's going to be the.
Speaker 6 (01:16:42):
Atmosphere that everybody wants to go to. It's going to
be very interesting to see how many people kind of
straggle away from their regular game. Say a couple of
s Henry fans, or a couple of Minster fans or
a couple of four Recovery fans. Don't sneak into the
stadium and get a watch what might be the market
game of the state of Ohio.
Speaker 2 (01:17:02):
If they can get in, that might be part of
it too. They can get right.
Speaker 6 (01:17:05):
I think they keep selling tickets, Marty. I don't think
I hear a good one. He's got a roll tickets
that goes from about here to Mariyan Local. I think so.
He'll have tickets galore there.
Speaker 3 (01:17:16):
Ron.
Speaker 2 (01:17:17):
I appreciate you coming on with us on short notice
of giving us a preview. It should be a lot
of fun tomorrow night. Enjoy the call. I know you're
looking forward to it. I appreciate your time today.
Speaker 6 (01:17:25):
Oh Marty. I enjoyed your time.
Speaker 3 (01:17:26):
Man.
Speaker 6 (01:17:26):
I enjoy the rest of your season.
Speaker 2 (01:17:28):
All right. Take care, Ron Brunswick, He'll be on the
play by play tomorrow night of Cold Water and Marion Local.
As he said, it may be the pre eminent game
in the state of Ohio tomorrow night. With the success
these two programs have had and the league they just
both happen to reside in the Midwest Athletic Conference. When
we come back the Magnificent seven rides again. We'll have
our top seven picks. We'll do before you when we
(01:17:49):
come back. It's the press box Fox Sports nine eighty wa.
Speaker 1 (01:18:23):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
three seven by three one six, one seven zero the
press box on Fox Sports nine eighty wn.
Speaker 2 (01:18:35):
And welcome back to the pressbox Fox Sports nine eighty WNE.
We are with you right up until five o'clock here
this afternoon as we continue along in the press box again,
thanks to Ron Brunswick for visiting with us.
Speaker 3 (01:18:46):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:18:46):
I enjoyed that conversation. The numbers he threw out about
just what the Midwest Athletic Conference has done, especially those
two programs Marrying Local of Cold Water is just fascinating
the way they've just dominated, and how good those two
teams are, and that one should be a whole lot
of fun tomorrow night at Marion Local. And as he said,
(01:19:06):
Eric Goodwin, the athletic director, he's got to roll tickets
pretty long, so you might have a chance to getting
in the scene that one tomorrow night. So it should
be a lot of fun on week number ten of
the high school football season. And both teams know full well,
they'll be playing in week eleven, probably in week twelve,
probably in week thirteen, probably in week fourteen, and probably
be doing what every high school wants to do in
(01:19:28):
the state of Ohio, and that's practice on Thanksgiving, which
means you're getting ready to play for a state championship
or have a shot at playing for a state championship.
Speaker 4 (01:19:35):
So absolutely all.
Speaker 2 (01:19:37):
Right, time once again, now we roll it out. It's
time for the Magnificent Seven as Kelly and I pick
our top seven teams International Football League music. Please, Kelly,
as we always like to say, when you hear this music,
(01:19:57):
you know you think right away of the Magnificent Seven.
Tremendous movie, the original, not the not the Remainder. It's
one of those movie themes that when you hear, oh,
you know what.
Speaker 5 (01:20:06):
Movie, it does immediately you know, you know, you know.
This was a tough week for me, this one.
Speaker 2 (01:20:12):
This was this You assume you're you assume you're going first, right.
Speaker 4 (01:20:16):
Yeah, ladies first right? Are you not a gentleman? Or
is that? I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:20:21):
That's the way this works. You always go first because
we like to get the wrong seven out of the
Oh gosh, please go right ahead.
Speaker 5 (01:20:30):
Alrighty, well for number seven, and I don't know if
this is allowed, but I'm doing it anyway.
Speaker 4 (01:20:35):
I've got a tie.
Speaker 5 (01:20:38):
I've got a tie because I really this this was
one of the hardest weeks for me. Actually, uh so
number seven. I have the Commanders and I have the Packers.
They are neck and neck.
Speaker 4 (01:20:49):
For me.
Speaker 5 (01:20:49):
I think the Packers are uh, they're on their own
winning streak. Jordan Love looks fantastic. I was actually really
worried about him because of the knee injury. But after
he missed those that game or two, came back and
hasn't missed the beat and in fact, the team has
looked even more complete. And obviously the Commanders. When Jade
(01:21:10):
and Daniels went down, obviously I wanted to throw up.
Obviously I was upset. Obviously I was throwing my hat
against the wall, screaming. I knew this would happen, this
always happens. But Marcus Mariota came in and looked like
he shaved off a few years. I think he's he's learned.
I think he's learning.
Speaker 4 (01:21:32):
I know it's so wild.
Speaker 5 (01:21:33):
I never thought i'd talk about this man, but he
showed a lot of patients that I actually had not
ever seen from him, and I really think he's learning
from Jayden Daniels as well. So had that got to
shout them out. Number six, the Steelers.
Speaker 2 (01:21:49):
Before you go further, I think we will allow a tie.
You get one, Mulligan.
Speaker 4 (01:21:56):
I'll give you that. I'll give you that.
Speaker 5 (01:21:58):
It was just really I was fighting with myself because
I couldn't. It was hard to take the Commanders off
the list. But I actually think the Packers are surging
right now. Okay, the Steelers look scary. The Steelers look scary.
Russell Wilson is able to push the ball down the
field and the way we have not seen in two
(01:22:18):
plus years in Pittsburgh. Paired with that defense, Mike Tomlin
smiling on the sideline. That's scary. That's scary. I don't
care what anyone says. It's Halloween time. They look scary.
The Buffalo Bills, they got their number one guy. They
look like a good football team again. They needed they
(01:22:41):
needed that wide receiver, Josh Allen needed help. The defense
has been more than passable, very impressive. Number four, the Vikings.
They've dropped, They've dropped serendipity, they've dropped. They've dropped because
number three had to go to the Lions, who beat them.
I mean, it's sometimes when when teams like this are
(01:23:05):
up against each other that next week the ranking is
gonna depend on who beat who. And the Lions it
was a field goal kick, but that's a win. That's
a win. Is a win, is a win. And number
two the Baltimore Ravens, because you have you seen them play.
They've got this guy named Derrick Henry that can take
(01:23:25):
over the fourth quarter of it seems any football game.
Quarters one through three are handled by a gentleman named
Lamar Jackson, and he knows what to do with the football.
And quarters one through three four has been iffy for
several years. Now they got a guy. It looks good.
The Ravens look good. And then the Kansas City Chiefs
(01:23:46):
just brought in DeAndre Hopkins, already undefeated, already making it
work with players whose names no one knows, and now
they have a bona fide number one, and they sit
atop the mountain yet again.
Speaker 2 (01:24:03):
Okay, all right, so seven, you have a tie Washington
Green Bay. Six, you have Pittsburgh, five, you have Buffalo Buffalo. Four,
you have Minnesota, Minnesota. Three, you have Detroit, Detroit and Baltimore,
Kansas City. All right, here's the correct sub.
Speaker 4 (01:24:20):
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 2 (01:24:21):
All right? At number seven the Green Bay Packers at
five and two. They just beat the Houston Texans, who
are a pretty good football team. And I thought that
was an impressive win. The way those two just kind
of slugged it out at one another for sixty minutes
was pretty and to win it. I know it was
a home game, but that's a Houston team that I
(01:24:41):
still think is very, very dangerous as this season rolls along.
So I have the Green Bay Packers at number seven,
like you, I'm with the Pittsburgh Steelers. I guess I
have to I guess I have to join the bandwagon.
I guess, well, not the bandwagon, but I have to
come on board with just admitting that they're pretty good.
It's just the re it's hard to do. It's been
hard to do. They've outscored their opponents one hundred and
(01:25:04):
sixty one to one hundred one this season. That defense
again just continues.
Speaker 3 (01:25:08):
To be.
Speaker 2 (01:25:10):
And if Russell Wilson is anywhere near what he was
five years ago, yeah, they all of a sudden become
a team that you have to really really reckon with.
As nauseating as even though we carry the Steelers, Yeah,
goho Steelers rara as nauseating as that is to say,
they're pretty good. They're pretty good. Number five is the
(01:25:31):
Detroit Lions. Even though losing Aiden Hutchison, I still like
that football team, and I like everything both sides of
the football. I think that's a football team that I
think they do a lot of things well, love their
run game, and they seem to be one of those
(01:25:51):
teams that has that momentum from last year that's still rolling.
How many times have you seen a team kind of
burst onto the scene like they did last year and
then petter out the next year. They're not doing that,
and they play what may well be the best division
in football. Who would have thought that before the season.
I mean, all four teams in the NFC Central are
(01:26:13):
at least two games over five hundred. NFC North rather
are over five hundred right now. Who would have Who
would have thought that? Number four of the Houston Texans.
I still am a buyer in Houston. I think that
that's a very good football team. CJ. Stroud continues to
impress each and every week. And yes, even though they
lost by a field goal at the gun at Green Bay.
They lost by a field goal at the gun at
(01:26:33):
Green Bay. I think that that kind of sums sums
that up three of the Minnesota Vikings. I keep waiting
for Sam Donald the bubble to burst. It hasn't. And
maybe he's on one of those roles. Maybe he's on
a Nick Foles type of role.
Speaker 3 (01:26:50):
Remember when he.
Speaker 2 (01:26:50):
Did that for the Eagles a few years back, which
led him to the Super Bowl.
Speaker 4 (01:26:53):
Reminds me of that.
Speaker 2 (01:26:54):
He just got so hot, had such a great year.
A perfect fit for that system, Sam Donald, It's a
perfect fit for that system. Number two, we have a switch.
I've dropped Kansas City to number two. Yeah, I'm sorry.
I mean they're still They're still the two time defending champions.
(01:27:15):
I take nothing away from them in that regard. Patrick
Mahomes has six touchdown passes eight interceptions. I just there's
just something about me that thinks the Baltimore Ravens are
the best team in football right now. I have elevated
them to number one with everything that they are doing
the way they are just stampeding people. We talked about
(01:27:38):
the other Day. The way they use Dereck Henry is
just amazing for me. They have it down to a
t and it's perfect. Their defense just continues to stone
people when they have In the game of thirty one
points to Tampa Bay, but I don't think anybody went, well,
they're in trouble. I never thought that in that game.
(01:28:00):
No thought they were trouble one. They are. They are
without a doubt. I think it's fair say the hottest
team in the league right now. Definitely the hottest, even
though even it sounds odd to say. Even though Kansas
City is six and oh, they're six and o by
a thread, they don't Baltimore's five and two by more
than a thread. I mean, other than the Cincinnati game.
Speaker 5 (01:28:24):
Do you know the other this is just some fun trivia.
Do you know the other quarterback? There's only been one
other quarterback that's been six and oh with a a
turnover differential more than their UH touchdowns.
Speaker 4 (01:28:39):
It's Peyton Manning, Peyton Manning. Only other guy.
Speaker 2 (01:28:43):
Peyton or Peyton Peyton or Peyton man Peyton.
Speaker 5 (01:28:49):
Yeah, the only only two guys that have ever been
six and oh with more UH interceptions than touchdowns at
the QB position.
Speaker 2 (01:28:58):
All right, So there you go.
Speaker 4 (01:28:59):
Great.
Speaker 2 (01:28:59):
Uh, I have Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Houston, Minnesota, Kansas City, Baltimore.
As painful as it is to put the Ravens on
top of anything, you have to you have to admit
it that they are the best. I think they are.
I think it's the best team in football right now.
I do. And that's the magnificent seven for this week.
The right one, mine, the wrong one. Kelly's wow.
Speaker 5 (01:29:18):
Okay, well, so the nudes checked in. He gave us
a magnificent seven plus one. He's got the chief set
number one the Lions and the Vikings, number four of
the Ravens, number five Texans, number six the Bills, the
number seven the Eagles, and number eight the Commanders. We're
(01:29:40):
going to talk about that when we come back.
Speaker 4 (01:29:42):
Eagles.
Speaker 7 (01:29:43):
Yeah, the Eagles, I think, I think, I think, I think,
especially especially if we Bengals fans with the Eagles come
out of town.
Speaker 2 (01:29:54):
On some day, the Eagles. Alright, FO forty nine the
press box, Fox Sports nine eighty w O.
Speaker 1 (01:30:02):
Name get on the press box called Marty now at
(01:30:24):
nine to three seven by three, one six, one seven
zero the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty.
Speaker 2 (01:30:31):
W O n E. Hey, welcome back to the program.
About six minutes left in the show here today.
Speaker 4 (01:30:36):
All right, the Eagles, Yeah, he put the people.
Speaker 2 (01:30:40):
How do we how do we justify the Philadelphia Eagles
being one of the top seven teams of the National
Football League.
Speaker 4 (01:30:45):
I maybe he's on maybe he only knows eight teams.
Speaker 2 (01:30:50):
Now, be careful because the News is one of your
biggest fans.
Speaker 4 (01:30:53):
Look, look, I got so much.
Speaker 2 (01:30:55):
You're gonna alienate one of your biggest fans.
Speaker 4 (01:30:57):
I've got so much respect for the News.
Speaker 5 (01:30:59):
This really is coming out of left field for me
because it's like last week they beat the Giants.
Speaker 4 (01:31:06):
What does that prove?
Speaker 2 (01:31:07):
What is it?
Speaker 5 (01:31:09):
I'm not saying the Giants the Giant Yeah, I mean
a lot of people the Giants. That's kind of been
the problem all season. So I just don't under like they.
I mean, they look terrible right now. And Taquon Barkley
is a shining light, absolutely, but that doesn't make up
for Jalen Hurts. That doesn't make up for Darius Slay
(01:31:30):
not being the sleigh. I don't understand the offensive line
isn't there they They're not communicating. Well, I've watched a
lot of Eagles games because I want to see the
other NFC East teams lose, so I know what they
look like. And I couldn't put them in the top
half of the league right now, let alone the top seven.
Speaker 2 (01:31:53):
I hope they're awful. One more Sunday Iday.
Speaker 4 (01:31:59):
Yeah, I hear you. I'm shocked by that.
Speaker 1 (01:32:02):
Shock.
Speaker 2 (01:32:03):
Hey, it's it's it's your right to pick your magnificent seven.
We appreciate you doing so, nuge.
Speaker 4 (01:32:10):
It's true. Marty does it every week, and he's wrong
every single week.
Speaker 2 (01:32:13):
I was gonna say, you could be more wrong than Kelly.
So congratulations on that. We thank you for checking in
with that. So all right, and again we'll do that
next week. We'll catch up on how everything went next week.
Here in the program, I want to mention this as
well too. At Vanderbilt for their game coming up on
Saturday with Texas. Now, I remember a couple of weeks
back when they meet Alabama, the lunacy that ensued afterwards
(01:32:38):
in that game on the field. Well, they've taken at
Vanderbilt's football stadium. Now they have put up netting behind
the visiting bench and if you've seen it's similar to
what they do at baseball games now to protect people
from foul balls who aren't watching the game and on
their phones instead of watching the game. And then we
have to waye put netting it to protect everybody. Anyway,
(01:33:02):
this is now they have they're doing this at Vanderbilt
to protect the visiting team from the Vanderbilt fans. Now,
somehow that all just that's like at the same time
saying Indiana and Oregon share the big ten lead in football,
one of these things doesn't belong. Yeah, Vanderbilt fans apparently
(01:33:27):
now have gotten this bit of this reputation and they
said they're probably going to leave it up because they
had their big rivalry game is Tennessee and they host
Tennessee the last Saturday the regular seasons. This netting is
stretched up from about the goal line to about the
forty five or fifty yard line, wow, covering the visiting
(01:33:48):
team bench area. Wow. And to keep the fans off.
Speaker 4 (01:33:54):
Yeah, I guess you hope. I don't.
Speaker 5 (01:33:57):
I mean, I've also like I felt that net it's
it's taught.
Speaker 4 (01:34:00):
It's taught.
Speaker 5 (01:34:01):
But I do believe that one million Rabbit fans can
get through it if they really want to.
Speaker 2 (01:34:08):
Yeah, I mean to stand there, uh and just have
one person or a row of people stand up who
aren't armed or who aren't wearing some sort of law
enforcement style of uniform to put their hands up and say, sorry,
you can't come down here. That ain't gonna work. And
even and even the law enforcement person, I mean, it's
still it's.
Speaker 8 (01:34:30):
It's still people want to If fifteen thousand people want
to rush twenty five the twenty five, just ask just
ask Davy Crockett.
Speaker 2 (01:34:40):
It ain't working. That's a little history note for you there.
I'm just going to go back and figure that one out.
Or general picket, yeahurg so you can, yeah, just just
connect the knots anyway. But that's what they're doing. And
could you imagine they tried to do that at Ohio Stadium,
put up netting behind one of the benches that now, well,
(01:35:02):
it wouldn't matter, I highest seam because most people are
too busy watching their phones or I've seen people knitting.
I've seen people reading books during games. It's not that
big of a People think, oh, it's the toughest place
in America. No, it's not. It's not even close to
one of the toughest places in America to play. They've
already played the toughest place in America to play, Oregon.
Speaker 4 (01:35:19):
Oregon. It's tough.
Speaker 2 (01:35:21):
We found that out. So all right, Oh, a quick
on the fan poles for you this afternoon before we
wrap it up here today in the press box, what
should the Browns do with Deshaun Watson? Ninety three percent
of you time to move on, Time to move on
from DeShawn Watson. And I think it's gonna be a
very interesting part of the off season when we see
what the Browns do decide to do, because obviously no
(01:35:42):
one is going to trade for him. That's not going
to happen. They won't be able to convince there's well, no,
I don't think there's anybody else out there dumb enough
to take that contract on or the lack of production
that he has shown since returning, I don't think they're
(01:36:03):
stuck with this either that or they gotta figure out
a way to navigate around the salary capital all this.
So they have a lot of off season work to do. Also,
today we'll ask you we asked you about a highstake
coach Ryan Day saying, quote, he's not happy about anything
right now with his football team. Sixty four percent of
you say, we ask you if you agree with that,
sixty four percent of you say yes somewhat. It's still
a good football team though, So there you have that.
(01:36:26):
So all right, that'll do it for the program today.
Thank you so much for being with us. Hope you
enjored what we had for this afternoon. We had a
lot of fun. This afternoon's kind of what we like
to do. There's too many other things going on in
the world right now to get you all upset. Sports
don't fall into that category. We just like to have
a good time and just talk about things that we
see and hear big games and have some fun.
Speaker 4 (01:36:46):
I'm nervous though about this weekend, you know, and all that.
Speaker 2 (01:36:50):
Kelly, I'm nervous every Sunday.
Speaker 4 (01:36:51):
I believe that. I believe that every Sunday.
Speaker 2 (01:36:55):
Kelly's off. Tomorrow, he's back on Monday. We'll have our
overreaction Monday for you. Tomorrow we'll have our weekly Friday
recap and get you ready for high school Football Week
number ten. Thank you so much for being with us.
Thanks to Tim Alcore, Thanks thanks to Ron Brunswick, and
thank you. We're back tomorrow. Three to four, fifteen, Fox
Sports nine eighty w rowing a
