So we are your home for Miami football and basketball.
Fox Sports nine eighty w one. Don't let any my
friends in Athens hear that. Okay, they already know so,
but we look forward to that. Then look forward to
(02:46):
talking to both coaches again Mondays and Thursdays right here
in the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty w ande.
So there we have all that coming up for you
next week as well too. We have a couple of
fan pulls up for you this afternoon. One of them
deals with college basketball CBS sports dot Com. I'll put
out a poll rating the best basketball program in every state,
(03:07):
the best Division I basketball program in every state. And
what they're fifty?
Speaker 5 (03:12):
Right?
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Is that correct? Fifty states? Yeah? Wow? Just to make
it fifty right, It's fifty right, See, I always think
that there should be fifty. Shouldn't Puerto Rico be a
state by now?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (03:23):
I think I mean at fifty it should be at
any rate, even DC.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
What about DC.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Yeah, I don't know. I think it should stay what
it is a district. I think it should stay that way.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
But they don't have any they don't have the voting
power of the other states, but they have to pay
the same amount of tax.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Well that's their problem for living there.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
Okay, Oh wow, it's on their license plate. It says
taxation without representation.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
That's right, that's right, that's right, all right. I don't
want to dive down the politics hole here, so but
I'm I'm just thinking that there's always been that chatter
that at some point we'll go to fifty one, and
fifty one would be Puerto Rico. Just always kind of
seems to be that talk, all right, at any pace
fifty states. CBS sports dot Com listed it's number one
(04:13):
what it thinks to using a number of various and
sundry calculations. Well, the program they rate as the best
Division one program in the state of Ohio is drum
roll Please, The Savior Musketeers, which is rather interesting because
we have some rather impressive and dominant Division one programs
(04:36):
in this state. So we thought we would ask you today,
do you agree with that that it's Xavior. No, it's Dayton,
No it's Ohio State. No, it's Cincinnati. And if you
want to write in one, go ahead. Someone responded, no,
it's right State. Okay, fine, if you're happy with that,
I have no problem with that if you have your
favorite Division one program. Right now, Cincinnati is getting a
(05:00):
fifty percent of the vote as being the number one
as being the top Division one program in the state
men's Division one program in the state of Ohio. So
I think listing the women's Division one programs will be
very interesting too, because I mean, right away you actually
think Ohio State, right. But Toledo has been very very
good until they lost a head coach, Tricia Callup, and
(05:22):
she left to go to Miami, Florida to become the
head coach there. But Ohio State has Kevin McGoff has
done a very good job of that program, got deep
in NCAA tournaments and won a couple of Big Ten
tournaments and a Big Ten regular season title share of it.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
So and they're making pros.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Oh yeah, left and right. So but that's an interesting
one again, and it's right now Cincinnati getting fifty percent
of the vote. And we're going to get into this
here in a couple of minutes on the show, but
we'll ask you today too. Yesterday, during his weekly meeting
with the media, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was asked if
he should go if he is going to management and
(06:03):
asking them to make trades to improve the team. Burrow
was rather to the point and blunt with his response, quote,
not my job. So we're asking you. Do you agree
with that, your choices know he needs to speak up,
or yes, he's absolutely right, And we're gonna talk about
that here in a couple of minutes they get your
(06:23):
thoughts on all of that. So we'll do that when
we come back after our first break here and get
into that discussion of little because I think there's some
interesting ways to look at this, because it is a
very unique situation. The Bengals have only since I think
it's nineteen seventy two, have only made one in season trade,
and that was in twenty twenty when adult Carlo's done
Lap to the Seattle Seahawks. Other than that. They don't
(06:45):
make they don't do those things.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
That's actually insane.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
At the trade deadline, it's ridiculous, and especially this year
when this team is kind of crying out for some
sort of mouth to help it. So we'll talk about
that coming up in a little bit. As I mentioned,
Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series last night, and
actually that was a pretty good baseball game. The Yankees
jumped out five nothing, and I'm sure a lot of
(07:10):
you as I as I was, were thinking, oh, we're
going to a game six. This thing's going back to
the West Coast. As good as Garrett Cole looked early
on in the game, the gaff of forgetting to cover
first base part of the floodgates opening up, and the
Dodgers roared back and won at seven to six last
night to capture the World Series championship. So the baseball
(07:31):
season thankfully ends before November, So thank you Dodgers for that.
Baseball should not be.
Speaker 6 (07:36):
Played in November.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
I'm just sorry it shouldn't be, and fortunately the Dodgers
made certain of that last night. So congratulations, and they
are already the betting favorite twin it next year. Are
the Los Angeles Dodgers. So there you have that winning.
Although as a Reds fan, I'm suddenly very very excited
(07:58):
for the baseball season in twenty twenty five with the
Terry Francona managing my team. Now, I'm suddenly very very excited,
in highly anticipatory of the coming baseball season, so looking
forward to it. So that from last night, the Dodgers
winning it last night, what was it the fifth inning
where things fell apart in the Yankees five run fifth inning,
(08:22):
eighth inning sacrifice fly from Gavin Locks and Mookie Betts
to produce to go ahead runs. Fortunately no fans were
involved in the outcome of the game last night getting involved.
So Dodgers won the World Series. The Cavaliers last night
routed the Los Angeles Lakers, but it was a bad,
a good and a bad night for Los Angeles. Dodgers
win the World Series, Lakers losing Cleveland last night one
(08:43):
thirty four to one. Ten Calves a rout of the
gate at five and zero, first time since the twenty
sixteen to twenty seventeen season when they were defending their championship. Yeah,
a good start to Evan Mobley had twenty five domin
Mitchell had twenty four as the Calves rolled to the
victory last night. The Columbus Blue Jackets are playing some
solid hockey, as if anyone has noticed. The Jackets last
(09:05):
night shut out the New York Islanders too nothing. And
being a Rangers fan, it's always good when the Islanders lose.
Last night, the Blue Jackets knocked off the Islanders to nothing.
Elvis Memer's likings with twenty eight saves, Damon Severson broke
a scoreless high in a third period. They got an
empty net goal late to close it out. The Blue
Jackets have won two in a row. But what's more impressive,
(09:26):
it's the first time in the season they won two straight.
So yeah, through nine games, so yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
But still it's a good thing. I mean, the Blue Jackets.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Oh, when you've been as bad as they have been
over the years. The new coaching staff and not a
lot of expectations on the team, and as we have
said before when we visited with the likes of Dave
Metzold and Tim Alcorn, the voice of the Calves, these
are these seasons are marathons, not sprints. But you can
get out of the gate fast. Nothing wrong with that.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Oh No, and.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Playing in the conference that they play in the East,
and in the division they're in the Metropolitan, which is
loaded with very good teams. Good start. There's an NFL
game tonight, Houston is in New York to face the Jets.
How are the Jets two point favorites in this game?
Speaker 4 (10:13):
I honestly I don't the odds makers, whoever is in charge, like,
I want to see you, I want to meet you
face to face because I want to have some strong words.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
As I've said before, I don't. I don't use those
for any sort of relevance to any game. And that
backs it up right there. The Jets are two point
favorites against the.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
Texans, the two and six Jets.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Against the five and two Texans.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
It doesn't make any sense.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Makes no sense whatsoever.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
So I when I saw that, I just was like,
is this a game?
Speaker 6 (10:47):
Like?
Speaker 3 (10:47):
Is this like real people? Like people are joking around
out of here?
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Right?
Speaker 6 (10:56):
No?
Speaker 2 (10:56):
I just I don't understand that. And again that's why,
that's why those things mean nothing to me, betting lines
and odds. I just I'm sorry. Everybody's well, those people
always seem to a little bit more than everybody. Well,
that just proves that they don't. Now watch the Jets
will win the game tonight, which I mean NFL who
(11:17):
knows these days. But I was looking at that and thought,
wait a minute, did I miss something somewhere on this
I was sed Yeah, interesting article in sports or on
ESPN dot Com. We're gonna talk about this a little
bit later on too, questioning whether or not Ohio State
is a super team right now. And there are some
(11:38):
interesting points brought up in this about where the Buckeyes
season is right now. The article on ESPN Plus is
headlined Ohio State was built to win it all? Can
Ryan Day and company finally reach that potential? And Adam
Rittenberg penned the article, and there are some very interesting
things and we're going to talk about that as well too,
a little bit later on in the program. Today. Of course,
(12:00):
today is Halloween. I'm sure a lot of areas there'll
be a trigger treating and everyone will be out, the
kids will be out as goofy as people are behind
the wheel of cars these days. I mean, just just
slow down, please, especially going through neighborhoods, because kids and
people are going to be everywhere tonight and there's no
(12:22):
need to go fifty in a twenty five zone or
seventy five and a forty. I mean, it's just ludicrous
what goes on. And yeah, just keep your eyes open tonight. Absolutely,
And it got me to thinking about the discussion we
adercually about movies and things on those lines and costumes.
Gonna be thinking about candy too today. I'm not a
(12:43):
big candy guy, never have been. To me, the best
candy are candy bars, and what I like the most,
I think it's the best candy bar. Again, I'm not
a real deep sampler of candy bars. To me, the
best one three Musketeers bars. I always love those that
that creamy chocolates are fantastic.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Yeah, I haven't had a three Musketeers in a long time.
I might have to.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Yeah, I don't go much. I don't go much deeper
than that. I like starbursts, like, Yeah, anything sour I'm about.
If it's sour, I'll try it. I'll try it. Absolutely.
There's there used to be it might still be in
existence called tangy taffy that was very sour, but it
was so hard on the teeth.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
Sounds terrible. I don't know how much I like a
sour candy.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Oh goodness, sweet tearts, Oh love love them. Oh yeah, yeah.
But if it's sour, then I'll I'll give it a shot. Yeah,
it's got to be sour, things like like lemon ice cream, limes, limes,
Shubert love it orange Sherbert. That's really Oh yeah, there's
something about stuff that's sour, and so that's where. But again,
(13:59):
other than that, candy hershey bars, Okay, but I just
I just was never never into it a candy guy. No, no, yeah, stuff, yeah,
it just can never.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
It was just never something that I I wasn't given away,
like like like hamburgers or stuff.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
Oh sure, me too, surprise. I always like twizzlers, kit cats.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
Slices of pizza. Give those away on Halloween.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
What about butterfingers. Butterfingers, No, yeah, no, huh, it's a
weird texture. I'm not hot dogs here, hot dogs.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
If someone gave me a hot dog for Halloween, now
what I might swing on them?
Speaker 2 (14:44):
At three fifteen when we come back, is Joe Burrow?
Speaker 7 (14:47):
Right?
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Is it not his job? We'll talk about that we
come back. It's the press box Fox Sports nine eighty w.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Name get on the press box called Marty now at
nine three seven buy three one six one seven zero
The press box on Fox Sports nine eighty w o.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
N E every back with you in three nineteen the
time the press box on this Thursday, Fox Sports nine
eighty w oene Halloween Trick or Treat and we are
with you right up until five o'clock today. Still to come.
Comments from Ryan Day, comments from James Franklin. As we
get ready for Saturday showdown in State College between the
Buckeyes and the Nitneyllons, we were talking about Halloween candy
(15:29):
before the breaking. I had forgot I'd mentioned that to
my wife a little bit earlier. Amy and hers are
one hundred thousand dollars bars and peanut Eminem's are her
favorites for mcandy's. Now she's big. She's big at chocolate.
I mean she loves chocolate. Yeah, any she has. I
mean there's certain brands of chocolate. There's a place in Parkersburg,
(15:53):
West Virginia that she loves Hall's Chocolates. In fact, she
has a plaque near her desk that says, I would
quit chocolate, but I'm no quitter.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
So you said, the hundred grand bars, one.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
Hundred thousand dollars bar. Yeah, yeah, it's it's it's a
it's a Nestli product, one hundred thousand dollars bar.
Speaker 4 (16:16):
That is a candy that I no offense to your wife.
This is gonna sound terrible. That is a grandma candy. Like,
that's a candy.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
I know, we we had some guys, a great relationship.
You're about you're about to destroy that. You're about to
destroy that.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
I just looked it up because I was like, this
sounds familiar.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
But I don't know. Grandma can't ever eat it.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
Yeah, It's like a candy that you find at a
grandma's house and you never.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
Really touched it. But it was like that was the offering.
That's what if. I'm so I'm so.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Saying, oh my goodness, that's yeah, boy, that relationship doesn't
right down the old porcelain altar right through it right out.
That thing's gone. She's never going to speak to you again. Goodness.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
You know grandma's are looking so you know how I
feel looking so young these days. I just want to
point that out. Really as young as you know, stunning.
It's a lot of people.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Too late, too late. You can't, you can't, you can't
put that. You can't put that shovel away. Yeah, you
can't put that shovel oy. Well, so we'd like to
hear from you too. You can hit us up on
our Twitter page or ex page, whatever it's called these days,
look for your favorite candies. We just have some fun
with it since it is Halloween today. So just your
(17:40):
thoughts on all of that. Joe Burrow yesterday, during his
weekly meeting with the media, was asked should he go
in and talk to Bengals management and voice his opinion
as to whether or not the Bengals should go out
and make a trade. Should they go out and get
some help? And he said he was very uh, very
(18:00):
a kurt with his response. Not my job, Not my job.
So here's what I will say. I agree publicly that
that's not his job, but privately, I think he should
be beating down the doors to those offices. He shouldn't
tell the media or anybody else that he has done that,
(18:21):
but he needs to go in there and start cracking
on them, on those doors to those offices and telling
those people you gotta go out and get me some help.
You've got to. I mean, he's the number one rated
quarterback in the NFL right now on a three and
five football team that doesn't, for the most part, have
three and five talent. Yeah, and I think he should
(18:42):
be he had. I think he has every right to
go in and voice his opinion. Number One, he's the
highest paid player on a team. He's one of the
highest paid players in the league. He's already taken them
to a Super Bowl. I think he has earned that voice,
quite frankly, but I would not tell the media that.
(19:03):
I would not go public with that. I think that
destroys a lot of that what is it goodwill? I
think that he has built up because right now, I
always like to go back to a comment. I've referenced
my friend Ken Carmen a couple of times on ninety
two three the Fan in Cleveland, who hosts their morning show,
and again, I'll say it again, I think Kenny's the
(19:24):
best sports talk show host well, certainly in the Midwest.
I don't think it gets much better than what what
Ken does every morning. The year the Bengals went to
the Super Bowl, Ken, numerous times on the air kept
telling everybody, I want to find something to hate Joe
Burrow about, but I just can't. Yep, and something like this.
If he went public, if it was public knowledge that
he said, yeah, I went in there now, I don't know,
(19:46):
maybe the fans would rally behind him because he has
that kind of relationship with the fans. I think the
fans revere him so much. And as I said, with
what Ken said, you haven't found a reason to not
lie him. He doesn't have any skeletons on this day
in his closet that I at least that we know
(20:07):
of right now, and from every indication, I mean, I've
got to know his dad, Jimmy somewhat well. I get
no inclination. I don't think I mean Jimmy, Hey, guess what, Marty,
Joe did this. He wouldn't do that. But I don't
think that there's that that part of Joe is out
there right now that he has any of that. But
I think he could be somewhat perceived if he went
(20:28):
into the office and made it public that hey, he's
under Hey, you got to get me some help, you
got to do something for me. Then come out and
have a bad game then. But I think though quietly privately,
he's earned that right and he should be doing that
right now because the team doesn't have to admit it.
I mean, if think about to make a deal, well
(20:48):
Joe told us to make this deal, they don't have
to say that.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
They never would.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
No, I think that he if he can't say anything,
then there's nobody in that locker room that can exactly
he's He really is the only voice of the team
that I think upper management could and would take seriously.
And he has to say and I don't know if
he needs to be specific. I don't think he needs
(21:13):
to be Aaron Rodgers and be like, go get me
Alan Lazard and go, you know, go get my guys.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
I don't think he needs to do that.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
But I think he needs to say, hey, it is
starting to feel clear that we don't have what we
need in this locker room. So you guys up there
need to bring me someone that I can work with.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
It goes back to his comment about the super Bowl
window it's open as long as he is there. Well,
I think there is some truth to that, But the
way they're currently constructed, I don't know that there's a
lot that that stands up right now, because obviously the
interior of the offensive line is not very good right now.
(21:52):
I don't know how good they are in the defensive backfield.
I think there are some it's still some issues there.
The run game still has issues. I mean, goodness sake, Joe.
Look at look how much Joe Mixon has done and
he I mean, he's been saving their offense since he
came back from being injured. I mean, you see his
numbers the ring. Think how was Joe Mixon running for
(22:13):
one hundred and twenty yards? It sells he running for
one hundred and ten yards when he couldn't get around
the edge or couldn't get through the middle last year,
Which takes it right back to what I was just saying.
The struggle of the interior of the offensive line had
to be had to play a role in it. One hundred.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
It's clear because you see him behind a good O
line and he looks he.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
I remember we were talking about has he lost the step?
Speaker 2 (22:33):
No?
Speaker 4 (22:34):
Apparently not apparently, he just he did not have the
protection he needed. They're getting no sort of penetration in
the middle. There no pull what I mean, and that
and that's been an issue with the Bengal since Joe
Burrow's been there. So it's too too many years into
(22:56):
Joe Burrow's tenure that this is still an ish you.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
I think when you think about asking players should they
go to the management and ask if they should make
a trade, you can go back over the years and
look at what some of these moves have done or
perceived to have done to players' perception by the fan base.
The one to me that comes to mind first and
(23:23):
forefront is when Irvin Johnson was with the Lakers and
they fired I forget the head coach, but they fired
and brought in Pat Riley as head coach. It was
perceived that Magic Johnson, because of his relationship with the owner,
Doctor Jarrett, the late doctor Jerry Boss, was that Magic said, hey,
we got to make a change. We need to get
this guy out of here. And then also, if you
(23:47):
go back to the Detroit Pistons, the trade that sent
Mark Aguire to Dallas for Adrian Dantley was widely perceived
to have been engineered by Isaiah Thomas, which destroyed his
reputation with a lot of people, mainly inside the NBA
and other players. But there was that perception that these
(24:10):
guys were pulling the strings on the team. And so
I think you have to be very careful as I said,
if you do these things, if you do do it,
then you have you have to do it very quietly.
You have to keep it under wraps. And it's a
conversation that again, as I said, I think Joe Burrow
(24:31):
has earned that right, still very young in his NFL career.
What is it, He's in his fifth year, fourth year
in the league right now, but he's he's earned that
right again because of what he has done for the
team and where he has pushed the franchise, has taken
him to heights that they weren't at and weren't likely
to get to until he got there. The one thing, though,
(24:53):
that I will say is while that's obvious that they
do need to do something, I will bet you in
the amount of Kelly's paycheck that they don't do that.
They don't do anything. I don't know they won't. I
got I don't know why. I don't want to bet
my paycheck. But no, I don't think there's any way
(25:14):
they do anything. I would be stunned if they make
a move by what is it five o'clock Tuesday, I
think it is the deadline, I would be I would
be flabbergasted if they did that that's just not the way.
As I said, they've made one in season trade in
fifty some odd years, and that was getting rid of
(25:35):
some baggage. Carlo's unelap They were done with him and
he wanted out. They wanted him out, and they got
rid of him. So I just uh, But again, as
I said, I think it was a good question. I
think it was a fair question to ask Burrow during
the media session. I think. But at the same time,
(25:56):
I think he's earned that right. He's one of the
few players that now Aaron Rodgers does that. It's I
think a lot of times because of the relationship that
Aaron Rodgers has or perceived to have with his team,
it comes across as is it petty? Is it fair
to say or whining because of what he has done,
(26:20):
And it's obvious that there it's obvious he doesn't have
a lot of friends on rosters. I think that's kind
of obvious where I think Burrow's got I mean, everybody
likes Joe I think, I mean seeing any evidence of
the opposite. But I think it's kind of obvious as
well too that Aaron Rodgers there are too many people
(26:41):
that really care much for him in any locker room
he's been in a play.
Speaker 3 (26:45):
And I don't disagree with you.
Speaker 4 (26:48):
I think Aaron has earned the respect of the league
in some level because of his high level of play
for so long. But yeah, I think you're right that
he doesn't have friends in the same way. It feels
like he picks a guy or two in every locker
room and he's like, that's my guy. We work together well,
and everyone else is what.
Speaker 2 (27:10):
He can do for me, Yeah, is part of it,
and I think you're right. I think that's just a
perception though. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (27:17):
And I think you're right though that if it were
to be publicly done, Joe would lose some of that
goodwill that he's built up with folks. And I think
that if it did happen, it would have to obviously
be under wraps and in house.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
But something needs to happen.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
It's funny though, when you when you really nail it
down and think about it. With the current situation with
with the Bengals and the franchise, I don't have many fans.
I don't know too many fans who would turn on him,
who would disagree with him if he went public and say, hey, yeah,
I went in to talk to Duke Tobin. I went
in and talk to Katie Blackburn Brown, I went in
and talk to Mike Brown said, we got to get
(27:55):
some help. I think the opposite. I think there are
a lot of Cincinnati fans who would go, it's about time,
and I so that that's another page of that which
I think is a little different than some of these
other guys, Whereas again Burrow has built up that kind
of relationship with the fans and that's the way they
feel about the guy. Three thirty two, it's the press box,
(28:17):
Fox Sports nine eighty w ol.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
Name get on the press box called Marty now at
nine to three, seven by three, one six, one seven
(28:41):
zero the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty won.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
Eighty three thirty six. As we continue along here on
this Thursday, it's Halloween. We're glad you're with us here today.
Right until five o'clock next hour, the Magnificent seven, Kell
and I will pick our top seven teams in the
National Football League, and we are certainly soliciting europe unions
as well too. Love to hear your top seven, your
Magnificent seven. The news has already checked in and I
get the guy credit. I mean, he had Philadelphia last week,
(29:07):
and I kind of scoffed at it because I'm a moron,
should have known better. But because they steamrolled the Bengals
on Sunday, kind of probably should have saw that coming.
But nonetheless, though your magnificent seven are welcome, hit us
up at nine to eighty, underscore w owne, and give
us your top seven teams in the National Football League. Yesterday,
(29:30):
the College Football Playoff Committee, the director of such, Rich Clark,
indicated that all teams who are under consideration for hosting
first round CFP games have made it clear they plan
to do so on the campus. Those teams also have
the option to play games at an alternate site, but
(29:51):
have clearly not taken that option, which is somewhat interesting.
I don't if you're any of those top four teams
or the five through is to be five through eight
that get the right to host, why would you ought
to play the game somewhere else other than your field.
I mean, do you think Ohio State, if they were
(30:13):
the number five seed and they've got Alabama coming in,
are gonna say, you know, well, let's kind of make
it more level for Alabama. Let's go play the game
in Indianapolis on a dry on a climate controlled that's
not gonna happen, not even kind of not even which
I don't understand that that part. And I searched and
tried to find answers as to why that part of
(30:37):
the consideration was put in. And I looked for some
comments from Rich Clark other than and I couldn't find anywhere.
Maybe I missed something when they were when they laid
out the formatics for this, But I mean, there's not
a team I would think that would have the option
(30:59):
of hosting one of those games that would say no, yeah,
I cant We're playing at someplace else. I don't know
how that could possibly happen.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
I don't know either. And I think if you did
make that decision, the like if you were an athletic
director and they came to you and they were like,
I that's the last day you work there, that they
would escort you out of the back.
Speaker 2 (31:20):
Did you see the reaction to Columbus. Ohio State was
hosting Alabama and Ross Buorke went, you know what, I
think we're gonna we want to go play this game
in Indianapolis.
Speaker 3 (31:28):
I literally it would be.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
Level playing field, climate condition. Good for our fans. Let's
go to Indianapolis.
Speaker 4 (31:34):
They're calling Jean Smith back like, hey, would you mind
just goodness, we've.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
Got a vacancy. It would never happen.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
Now, I could see perhaps if again, because some of
these games are I mean, these games are going to
be played. The first round games are on December the
twenty first, December the twentieth, I mean, there is the
possibility you could be dealing with some rather rough weather
snow when things along those lines. But again I don't
(32:04):
know if that's how much of a consideration that is.
And certainly stadium size means nothing in this as far
as hosting a game like this. Again, I don't Yeah,
that would that just kind of forreed me when I
saw that. That Again, those teams also have the option
(32:28):
to have the games played at an alternate site, but
have clearly not taken that option. Now maybe it perhaps
could take It could be taken into consideration if oh, well,
that's not going to happen though, because Northwestern is not
going to get in now, I think that that would
be a possibility if they say, for example, if Northwestern
were to get in, I mean right now, they're playing
(32:50):
in a renovated lacrosse field that seats fifteen thousand people.
I would imagine there would be a strong push to
get them to play that game at say Soldier Field
or someplace like that, but that's not an issue. Everybody
stadium is more than capable of hosting these games. Again,
(33:11):
I don't understand why that that was put in there
as an option. I don't that or even if I
don't even know how serious an option, well, I mean
it does. I mean again, rich Clark did say those
teams also have the option to have the games played
out out at alternate sites. But again, there's no school
in those first rounds. That's good. As I said, can
(33:34):
you imagine the calm, considerate fan base and Columbus reacting
to that.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
It would be a bad day.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
It would be a bad Yeah, it would not be
And and on the flip side of that, if you're
Ohio State and you are getting shipped to Alabama, well yeah,
you're gonna take your chances to go down there and play.
Whether it's gonna weather's going to be good, gonna be
in the fifties or sixties them on a level field.
I mean, I you know, but that's the way it
(34:02):
is so again, I just it was just kind of
kind of kind of caught off guard by that a
little bit that that that's even an option. So it's
interesting too. The story about that yesterday from Zach Barnett
said that there are others who have voiced that the
(34:25):
expanded format will make the sport more boring because of
the potential gap and quality of competition. But I think
this season has proven more than anything that the playing
field is close to being level, certainly from about ten
on eleven on. When you when you look at it again,
(34:49):
for example, if you go look at the rankings in
college and right now, this is about the only way
you can base it. Because the CFP pollals have come
out till Tuesday night. Oregon is number one. But are
they head and shoulders better than Georgia? I don't know.
I don't know. Penn State is number three. Are they
(35:09):
head and shoulders better than Ohio State. We're gonna find
out on Saturday. Ohio State is six and one. Are
they head and shoulders better than Ain't no, Miami, I
don't know. That's the great thing about this.
Speaker 3 (35:23):
It's right now, this is brand new.
Speaker 4 (35:25):
Yeah, I mean yeah, these games are it really is.
Any given Saturday that they play, we will find out
who's better that day. And I think that is the
best case scenario for these big programs because I mean
as a fan, I mean as a program, I'm sure
you would love to just keep whipping on people all
(35:46):
up and down the field. But as a fan, I
love that every single one of these games is competitive
and a lot of these games I can't look at
and just pick a winner.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
That was the argument against going to twelve was that
everybody said, well, it's going to ruin the right season
will mean nothing, these games won't have any Well, it
couldn't be further from the truth. Couldn't be further from
the truth. Every Saturday is enormous and now Ohio State
Penn State would be enormous regardless if it were twelve
(36:15):
or four, sure or eight as far as teams are concerned.
But there's it's fair to say that I don't know
that it's a what it is for Ohio State, it's
a Big Ten championship game, elimination game, no question about that.
They lose their out. They're not playing for the Big
Ten title. That's done now. They'll still probably have depending
(36:38):
on how they lose again. If they lose, but if
they drop, they will fall to probably I mean their
two losses will be to the number one team in
the country and the number three team in the country.
They'll fall into probably the eight or nine range in
the in the rankings, maybe a little lower depending on
some of the other things that go on.
Speaker 3 (36:57):
I actually think like seven, six or seven.
Speaker 4 (37:00):
It I don't know the top these are top three team.
Speaker 2 (37:06):
It would still be hard, I think, to place them
ahead of say seven and one Tennessee or an unbeatn
Miami or and this is going to rile a lot
of high state fans. It would be hard to put
them ahead of seven and one Notre Dame, even though
Notre Dames one losses to Northern Illinois on their home field.
(37:29):
So I don't know, but I still think they fall
into that area where they're still going to be in
that at large consideration. And what it does do if
you think about it a little more, it kind of
goes back to what we were talking about a moment
ago about hosting. They fall from a host role to
(37:53):
having to go on the road and play. They fall
into that eight nine. They could be having the they
can have it right now. The way the format is
set up, five plays, five plays, twelve, six plays, eleven
seven places, ten eight plays nine Ohio State falls to
say seven, or they fall to nine somewhere in that area.
(38:15):
Then they're looking at having to go to Miami or
having to go to Texas and play and they fall
into that range. Yeah, So it's uh, that part of
it to me is very interesting, and that's why that
game Saturday, there's so much writing on it, and not
only for the teams, but for the head coaches too. Absolutely,
(38:39):
there's a lot riding on both head coaches coaches. Yeah. Absolutely.
We talked a little about that yesterday and we'll dive
into the ESPN article when we come back as well
too about is Ohio State a super team? Do they
fall into that category or do we get the answer
Saturday about four o'clock we'll find out out. It's the
(39:00):
press box Fox Sports nine eighty w O the.
Speaker 1 (39:02):
Name get on the press box called Marty now at
(39:37):
nine to three seven by three one, six, one seven
zero the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty won
eighty Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (39:47):
To the program, as we roll on with you three
point fifty here on this Thursday afternoon. A couple of
fan polls up for you today and we're asking you
one college basketball. Cbssports dot com has picked its top
Division I programs in each state and it ranks Xavier
as the number one program Division ON program in the
state of Ohio. So we're asking you, do you agree. No,
(40:07):
it's Dayton, No, it's Ohio State. No, it's Cincinnati, and
Cincinnati right now as the lead getting fifty percent of
the vote in our ranking. So thank you for that.
Jopa Jojoseph Haad says, I think x and Cincinnati have
been pretty even, so that's good to see that. Yes,
although Cincinnati, they've both had had a run here lately
(40:28):
where both have kind of been coming to Prior to
Sean Miller coming back to Xavier, UC struggled for a
couple of years, Xavier the same thing. But yeah, I
think this year's Xavier conse very well away claim to
being maybe the best team in the state of Ohio,
although I think jury still a little bit out on
(40:50):
Jake Deebler in Ohio State right now.
Speaker 3 (40:53):
So because yeah, we will we will see we will
see them.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
You just don't know right now. And we also ask
you today, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow says asking management to
make trades to improve the team is quote not his job.
We're asking you if you agree with that today and
right now, eighty three percent of you say yes, He's right,
so which I find interesting. I didn't know that it
(41:18):
would be that high. Just sixteen percent say no. He
needs to speak up. So also getting some response to
the candy question, the nude says Kelly ba I'm ashamed
of you for the first time in the show. You
are wrong. One hundred, one hundred thousand dollars. Grand candy
bar is not an old people's candy. It's great candy.
Pretty much is niceley crunch with caramel on it. Old
(41:40):
people candy? Is that strawberry wrapping thing you never find
in a store or worths?
Speaker 3 (41:44):
Yeah, I okay, I will give you that.
Speaker 4 (41:46):
Those those those candies you mentioned are the quintessential grandma candies.
Speaker 3 (41:51):
However, I've never I've never.
Speaker 4 (41:54):
Seen anyone actually eat a one hundred thousand grandfar Well,
I've just seen them in my grandma's house.
Speaker 2 (42:02):
Next time, next time we're all together and Amy's with us,
I'll have her have one of those of you I'll
solve that for you.
Speaker 4 (42:09):
I'm shocked and and honestly for me to have been
on the show as long as I've been and this
is the first.
Speaker 3 (42:15):
Time I'm wrong. I'll take that.
Speaker 4 (42:17):
I could I could be wrong one time out of
out of the year and some change I've been on
the show.
Speaker 3 (42:23):
So I'll give you that one.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
We can argue that till the end of the week.
Speaker 3 (42:27):
No, he said it. He said, it's the very first time,
and I like that take. I like that take.
Speaker 2 (42:35):
He also adds, and he's completely wrong in the last
part of this the best candy bar these days is
something called take five. I have no idea. What again,
I don't do candy, but he says, sour candy is nasty.
That's one wrong.
Speaker 3 (42:48):
He makes good points. He makes good points.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Joe Jojosea posted a picture of what what is that?
What is that taffy? That orange and black? What that is?
Speaker 4 (42:59):
It's it's it's it is one of the other nameless
Grandma candies. I there are so many candies out, Like
where do you get this candy from? Like it's it
is nondescript. Those strawberry ones, you know what, the ones
he's talking about yeah, yeah, I've never I've been to
stores in many states all over the country, and I
(43:22):
get I've gone to stores in other countries. I've never
seen these candies anywhere. I don't know where you buy them.
I think that when you become a grandmother, they just
start appearing in your home. It's the only logical, the
only logical explanation for why they exist, because I don't
know where you could even buy them.
Speaker 2 (43:40):
Well, I mean, I'm proud to say we're grandparents, but
we don't have any of those in our home right now.
Speaker 4 (43:46):
Yeah, I know you guys are still young grandparents though.
I think you you you like, graduate once once, once
your grandson is in the it's starting to wear Halloween
costumes and things. I'm telling you they're gonna be in there.
Keep me in the loop, though, because I mean, I'm
doing research at this point.
Speaker 2 (44:05):
Yeah, you just lost a friend, so I can't help you.
You're gonna have to fight that. I have enough problems
on a daily basis, so I.
Speaker 3 (44:19):
Can cook pretty good. Is there a snack she likes
I can I can bring that.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
I can bring that as long as it's gluten free.
It's got to be gluten free. No matter what the
snack is, it's got to be gluten free. So but yeah, again,
there's nothing, abolutely nothing wrong with sour candy.
Speaker 3 (44:35):
There's a lot wrong. Why do you want to hurt
yourself while you're eating candy?
Speaker 6 (44:41):
How do you how do you hurt yourself?
Speaker 4 (44:42):
Because like you have to suck your your your cheeks
in so much. I feel like if I, if I,
if the candy is two sour, I will legitimately get
a headache. Well it's it's a pain. It's like you
have to endure.
Speaker 3 (44:56):
You have to. Yeah, oh man, it's good, it's good.
Speaker 2 (45:01):
Good. Now, remember back, I think it was probably late
September when UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka went public about his unhappiness.
He has entered the transfer portal. Bay Yeah, yeah, no
one saw that coming. Yeah, so that coming out the
other day, he has entered the transfer portal.
Speaker 3 (45:21):
So that's so interesting.
Speaker 4 (45:23):
I'm sure flew of quarterbacks just or schools rather just
waiting to take this guy.
Speaker 2 (45:29):
There will be. But I will tell you this, I've
since I've had this chance this year to be a
little closer to the Ohio football program, I've talked to
a lot of Ohio's coaches about the transfer portal and
the things you look at when you see a name
pop up in there. And it's not simply just going Okay,
we want this guy.
Speaker 3 (45:49):
Oh sure.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
I mean, it's it's like recruiting a high school player.
You're making phone calls, you're reaching out to other coaches,
you're reaching out to the player, You're doing all of
the homework you have to do because you're bringing in
somebody who could completely disrupt what the culture you're trying
to establish or have established at your program. And I
(46:14):
can say this began because of firsthand knowledge that Ohio's
coaches they that was a big deal for them, a big,
big deal to make sure they brought in the right
kind of player. They just obviously knowing that they're fighting
almost an uphill battle to get players to come in
because of the obvious deficiencies that a school like Ohio
(46:39):
or Miami or any MAC school or any other G
five school is fighting right now. They don't have the
war chest that the collectives that Ohio State have or
any the power fives, so they have to be even
more precise in the type of players they bring in because,
(47:00):
as I said, it can just completely disrupt everything that
you're trying to do, everything that you're trying to do.
So a guy like Matthew Sluca, I think there will
be a he will get heavily scrutinized about everything that
he says, what he was actually offered. And coaching is
(47:22):
one big fraternity. I mean, all these guys know, these
guys know the other guys, or somebody who knows this
guy at this position, or knows somebody at that school
who knows somebody at that school. So you can reach
out and it's nothing is hidden from anybody. There are
no secrets. So that part of it, to me is
(47:44):
will be very interesting to see where he lands and
see which schools decide, Yeah, he's worth taking the risk,
He's worth taking the risk. Again, because he complained about
he told he was offered one thing, the school says,
or the head coach said, we never made or I
never made that offer, and so there was a lot
of uh, yeah he said exactly exactly. So But again
(48:09):
maybe the most, uh, maybe the least surprising thing about
this college football season is that he is in the
transfer portal.
Speaker 3 (48:15):
Yeah, truly not.
Speaker 2 (48:17):
Surprised at all by that. All right, near the top
of the hour. Dodgers win the World Series last night,
beating the Yankees in five games. Cavaliers rolled to an
easy win, pounding the Lakers last night. The Blue Jackets
went at home now five to three and one early
on in this National Hockey League season, and we're a
day away from the start of the OHSA football playoffs.
(48:38):
There's an NFL game tonight the Jets and the Texans,
and we will hear from Ryan Day and James Franklin
when we come back. It's the press box, Fox Sports
nine eighty wing A.
Speaker 1 (49:23):
Welcome to the press box with Marty Banister, the latest
on all local sports from Wright State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine three seven, by three, one six,
one seven zero the press box on Fox Sports nine
(49:43):
eighty WNA.
Speaker 6 (49:46):
That's not it's not my job.
Speaker 8 (49:48):
Do you ever wish that, you know, the team, would
the organization give you another weapon or too or on
either side of the ball.
Speaker 2 (49:57):
It's not my job. Not my job. Pretty blunt and
to the point. Welcome back to the pressbox, Fox Sports
nine EIGHTYWEE. That was Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow when asked yesterday,
should he go to the front office and say, hey,
get me some help, not my job. Welcome back to
the show with you right up until five o'clock this afternoon.
We'll hear some comments from Ryan Day. We'll hear some
(50:17):
comments from James Franklin as well too. There's a story
on ESPN dot com about the Ohio State football program.
ESPN dot Com Adam Rittenberg pen of the story asking
whether or not Ohio State is indeed a super program
a super team right now, And I think it's a
(50:39):
fair question to ask. I think right now, especially after
what happened at Oregon the game last week with Nebraska
where they managed to win. But when you look at it,
the question is there again. The Buckeyes have not had
a losing regular season since nineteen eighty eight. Eight they
(51:01):
have it endured a multi year stretch that will be
described as mediocre since from ninety nine to two thousand
and one, the last couple of years of the John
Cooper regime. In the past fifty seasons, they have fourteen
more wins than any other college football team. Keep that
in mind, but they haven't won a national championship since
twenty fourteen, or beaten arch rival Michigan since twenty nineteen.
(51:23):
The average margin of defeat against Michigan in those three
games it was a couple of touchdowns. So what did
they do well? Twenty million dollars spending spree, all the
players they brought in, all the talent that they still have,
coupled with some of the transfers, Will Howard Quin, Shawn Judkins,
Caleb Downs, so on and so on and so on,
(51:47):
and the story goes on to talk about also bringing
in Chip Kelly to run the offense, to be Ryan
Days offensive coordinator. And here you set number four in
the nation with a one point loss at Oregon and
having to hang on to beat a very average Nebraska
team on your home field, and now having to go
(52:09):
prove all of this and all the naysayers this coming
Saturday in State College. And it's I think it's fair
to say that if they do not do this on Saturday,
the questions are just going to go completely through the roof,
(52:30):
especially if Penn State comes out there and just eviscerates
that Buckeye defense. And again, I don't think that's going
to happen. On Saturday. As I've said before, I'm not
a big as much as Ryan Day has struggled in
big games. James Franklin is in Wikipedia under that category.
Speaker 3 (52:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (52:51):
Yeah. So the one thing though is that I'm also
a big believer in the law of large numbers, and
it has proven almost every single time when you get
to a point where somebody has won fifteen of sixteen.
(53:11):
I mean, Ohio Stated won seventeen of eighteen against Michigan.
What's happening? They have won? One sense at some point
that what goes around comes around does factor into all
of this. It does become a reality, and I think
on Saturday there's going to be such an air, especially
(53:32):
if this game gets into the fourth quarter and Penn
State has a two or three score lead, It's going
to the shorts are going to get very very tight
on the Ohio State sideline because they all know what
this means, all of this money that you spent now.
And also I think could also bring in the big
(53:54):
question as well too, well, what's more important winning the
Big ten or winning the national championship? Because even if
you lose Saturday, it does take you out of winning
the Big ten, which Ryan Day has told everybody that's
goal number one is to get to Indianapolis and win
the Big Ten. But you can still this year rally
(54:16):
the troops, circle the wagons and play for a national championship.
Speaker 4 (54:21):
I think that you're the only way to remedy not
getting into the Big Ten Championship. I mean, you'd have
to be competing for the Natty to for Ryan Day
to walk back into Ohio State and be like, hey, guys,
you know, sorry, I messed up.
Speaker 2 (54:38):
Here's this Natty busy. Natty or bust has been the
mindset you've heard? How many times have we heard that
Natty or bust is what has been the mindset. But
here's the thing. Your level of your margin of error
drops drastically if you lose this game on Saturday, because
(54:59):
of having already lost to Oregon. If you lose this one,
then one more loss. No matter how much Ohio State
draws TV ratings, no matter how much the nation loves
watching Ohio State play, three losses will not get you in.
That's that will not happen. And again, I think they're
(55:22):
better than Indiana from what we've seen this year. I
think they're better than Michigan. But you fall to what
would it be six and two? Yeah, again, your margin
of error, it falls through the It just it just
goes up. And so that's the question that becomes. Rittenburg
(55:48):
went around and asked a lot of college coaches their reaction,
and again, these questions are asked certainly under the guus
of no one's going to identify who said these things.
For example, a Big Ten defensive coordinator told Rittenberg, personnel wise,
there's no doubt about it. That's an extremely talented group
(56:10):
from every position. It's hard to recognize any weaknesses, but
there are concerns with the line. Offensive line performance and
development has become a growing source of angst around Columbus.
Ohio State's overall recruiting stands out. The team has had
only one offensive lineman rank among the nation's top one
hundred and twenty five recruits in the past three classes.
That was Luke Montgomery. But the optimism went up this
(56:34):
year when the Buckeyes went out and brought in Donovan Jackson,
Josh Simmons, and Josh for I'm sorry they all returned,
and then brought in Alabama starting center Seth McLoughlin. But
the injuries have certainly affected the group. That same coordinator said, quote,
they weren't elite last year, and it's pretty much the
same crew. They definitely aren't as good upfront as they
(56:54):
probably wished they were. Another Big Ten coordinator says, they're
the weaker part of it. For some You saw Nebraska
match up well in there with them, and that was
one of the reasons why that game was close, was
that Nebraska battled them to a stalemate on the line
of scrimmage. So because again, much like we've talked about
(57:16):
how the Bengals I've been running football, Chip Kelly said,
we can't live with the way we ran the ball
last week. You're going to have to win the rushing
battle to win games in the Big Ten. We certainly
understand that Penn State's defense is different than Nebraska's, but
we have to establish the run in this game, and
being beat up on the offensive line is not a
good way to go into a game like this trying
to establish the run.
Speaker 3 (57:37):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 2 (57:38):
Yeah, that's just not a very good equation. That doesn't
a factor for you this. Another coaching around the league said, quote,
Chip does a good job of formations and shifts and
motions and different personnel group things. So if you're trying
to match all those patterns and zone it makes it tough.
But if you can play man and you've got that guy,
you've got that guy, it's a little bit easier. That's
(58:00):
where the line's weakness or strength comes in, because they're
not in a situation where they can catch you misaligned.
That's what Oregon did. They man pressured a little bit
and made Howard uncomfortable as the game went on, which
was obvious if you watched it. That's what happened as
the game went on. Now, obviously, as I said the
last hour, there are no secrets in college football in coaching.
(58:24):
Everybody watched that game. You know, Nebraska used that game
film game video. Is it fair to call it film anymore?
The video because it's kind of a generic coaching term. Yeah,
went back and watch the film.
Speaker 3 (58:39):
Well there's no film, not a drop of film.
Speaker 2 (58:43):
But we're to say, well, we went back and watched
the MP three and.
Speaker 3 (58:47):
This av I video.
Speaker 2 (58:49):
Yes, exactly.
Speaker 3 (58:51):
You use the term because it makes it We understand.
Speaker 2 (58:54):
We downloaded the game off of YouTube, you went back
and watch Yeah, goodness. Yeah, so, but those are some
of the things that are being said right now. And again,
as I said, no one is going to step forward
and admit to being the coordinator who said those things,
because they all know heck, we might have to play
Ohio State at some point. We don't want to do that.
(59:16):
But I think it does bring up some very interesting
concerns and some very interesting points about just where this
team is at right now and well, and sometimes all
that money doesn't buy you what you what is? Money
doesn't buy you happiness? What's the line for that one song?
Then they try and live without it. I forget who
who sang that song. But at the same time, though
(59:38):
you can buy all these pieces and if they don't fit,
it still won't work. And I don't know that they're
at that juncture of the equation yet, but yeah, it
is starting. It is worth looking at, yeah, isn't it.
I mean it is worth looking at a little.
Speaker 4 (59:56):
Bit, especially if a team with not nearly as much
money makes any sort of run.
Speaker 3 (01:00:03):
I think that every I.
Speaker 4 (01:00:05):
Mean all of the big all of the big schools,
I mean Georgia and Alabama and Texas will all have
to I think, really rethink how how NIL is gonna
play into how they build their program because if it's
not just the money, and we know it's not just
the money. The best teams in in the league's most leagues,
(01:00:27):
except I mean, I guess the Dodgers just proved me wrong.
But for the most part, spending the most money does
not always mean you're gonna win the most doesn't mean
you're gonna be the best. And so you've gotta you've
got to fill in those those gaps that money cannot
fill in with coaching, with with staff, with trainers, with culture.
Speaker 2 (01:00:48):
Exactly exactly. And well, I mean, we talked about this
going into the World Series. Everybody, a lot of peripheral
baseball fans would say things like, well, it's the same
two teams every year. Well, no, it wasn't. The win
by the Dodger that was their first World Series since
twenty twenty and their first in a full season since
what twenty.
Speaker 3 (01:01:09):
Two nine, two thousand and nine, something.
Speaker 2 (01:01:12):
Like that, in a full season. The Yankees that was
their first World Series since two thousand and nine. So
you spend, spend, spen, spend, but it doesn't guarantee you win, win, win, win,
And I think again, that's kind of the Again, as
I said, that's kind of the equation that Ohio State
is kind of looking at right now. Did you spend
(01:01:32):
the money the right way? Did you bring in the
right pieces? And a stumble Saturday at State College is
really really, really going to amp up the pressure, no
question for those of us who love chaos, Yeah, it's
kind of what. It will be something to see, but
it will be a fun game on Saturday. Don't think
(01:01:53):
it's a question if and if Drew Aller is not
one hundred percent. I tend to think Ohio State the.
Speaker 4 (01:02:00):
Game, but I think that would be a shame. I
hope we can tell. I want to see the best.
I want to see you.
Speaker 2 (01:02:04):
Want everybody exactly, want everybody healthy. When we come back,
we'll hear from Ryan Day. It's the press box Fox
Sports nine eighty will.
Speaker 1 (01:02:27):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three seven by three one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty w O
n E for.
Speaker 2 (01:02:39):
Nineteen as we roll along with you here on this Thursday.
Practice updates injury wise both Bengals and Browns. T Higgins
no go today for the Bengals. Orlando Brown Junior also
for Cincinnati for the Browns today linebacker Jordan Hicks did
not practice. Denzel Ward, who was in the concussion protocol,
we talked about that a little bit yesterday. Joel Buttonio
(01:03:02):
with his foot injury, did not practice and David and
Joku didn't practice today. So they just got him back
and his reason. His reason for practicing is simply listed
as unknown unknown.
Speaker 3 (01:03:16):
But what it says unknown, I don't know if I think
I thought that was an option. Sometimes they'll say private.
Speaker 4 (01:03:23):
Matters or por body or yeah, but I know, like,
do youanna where he is?
Speaker 2 (01:03:29):
Wasn't it wasn't a didn't practice today?
Speaker 3 (01:03:31):
Interesting?
Speaker 2 (01:03:32):
So but those are the Browns practice updates, so along
with the Bengals practice updates. Okay, Ohio State heads of
State College on Saturday take on Penn State. It's really
there are a number of games on Saturday, but there
are none bigger than this one for a lot of reasons. Uh,
Georgia Florida is Saturday, but that's Florida's middling in the
MAC right now. Other than that, there's nothing else on
(01:03:56):
Saturday that reaches the level of importance that this game
will have. On Saturday in State College, it's the big
noon game on Fox. I think both. I even I
think both of the pregame shows are there. I think
Game Day is there. I think in State College on Saturday,
certainly the Fox Show was there as well too, but
it was so much surrounding it. Ryan Dale High States
(01:04:18):
head coach talked earlier in the week about taking his
team on the road after a very, very unimpressive performance
over a average Nebraska football team.
Speaker 6 (01:04:28):
You know, it was a combination of things.
Speaker 5 (01:04:30):
I don't think we were always you know, I did correctly,
and you know, Zendi get beat on a few of
them there, but it wasn't just him, you know, there
were some other things that were mixed in there. But
you know, in Chip, I think we ran it double,
you know, twice as much as we threw it in
the game. And so we're looking to establish the run.
But when you can't convert on the third downs, the
third and shorts, then you can't get drives going, you
(01:04:50):
can't wear down defense.
Speaker 6 (01:04:51):
So we've got to convert on third down.
Speaker 2 (01:04:54):
For wrong, Like I said, it didn't seem like there
were a lot of those kind of like perimeter throws
of you guys were a couple with the run game.
Speaker 6 (01:05:00):
Earlier on in the season, in the Nebraska game.
Speaker 5 (01:05:02):
Is that just a game plan specific thing to Nebraska
or do you feel like you need to get back
to some more of those complimentary passes.
Speaker 2 (01:05:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:05:09):
Yeah, you try to, you know, game plan based on
what you're getting that week. And obviously the game play
didn't work very well, so we got to obviously reconsider it.
Speaker 9 (01:05:19):
Pat Murphys, Brian James Franklin kind of left it up
in the air yesterday about where they'll go with a quarterback,
two different guys.
Speaker 2 (01:05:28):
Two different styles.
Speaker 7 (01:05:29):
How do you prepare for two different quarterbacks for a
big game and you've got so much else kind of
thing going.
Speaker 2 (01:05:35):
On as well.
Speaker 5 (01:05:36):
Yeah, we'll prepare for you know, both guys being being
healthy and ready to go, and you know they both
bring different things to the table, but both are very
effective on what they do. So you know, we'll go
based on what we've seen, what's on the film, but yeah,
we have to know who's in the game even then.
Speaker 7 (01:05:52):
They've played both even when Dollar is healthy. Does that
help a little bit because you do you had to
prepare for some change up there.
Speaker 5 (01:05:59):
Yeah, I mean, guardless, you know, we knew we were
gonna have to prepare for both quarterbacks, So.
Speaker 6 (01:06:05):
You know, and both do things.
Speaker 5 (01:06:06):
You know, they both do they run, they throw, and
they both can do things very well. So they're both
talented and what they do is a little bit different
in the way that you know, their skill sets set up.
But like you said, we knew we were gonna have
to prepare for both anyhow, so.
Speaker 9 (01:06:22):
We can watch it and we say that running it
is not working, maybe go away from it. But as
a as a coach, what's the conversation, like on the
headset when you're trying to establish running you're trying to
learn in the Nebraska game versus hey, we've got to
get away from this because it's just not working.
Speaker 5 (01:06:37):
That conversation, Well, the number one goal is to move
the ball down the field, and you know, so that
has to get done. But you also are looking to,
you know, control the game by running the football and
making sure that you know, you're establishing the run and
controlling the rant and running the rushing yards.
Speaker 6 (01:06:51):
But when you know, look.
Speaker 5 (01:06:53):
At on the sideline, you got to identify what's going
on in the game and if it's and it's an
adjustment that needs to be made or somebody you know,
just you know, didn't execute it right.
Speaker 6 (01:07:01):
You know, you're not just gonna walk away from it.
I mean, we were.
Speaker 5 (01:07:05):
Explosive and we shot the ball down the field, but
that's just that's not always going to happen.
Speaker 2 (01:07:10):
You know.
Speaker 5 (01:07:10):
We have to make sure that we're we're establishing runs,
we're staying effective and then again converting on third down,
because the more a batch you have during a drive,
the better you're going to be. When you're not converting
on third down, you're not keeping drives a lot to
go one for ten. I mean, that's just unacceptable. So
you know, we're going to keep swinging at it because
we've got to make sure that we're doing it the
right way and making sure that we're you know, winning
(01:07:31):
the rushing yards and especially in this game, and we
got to win the turnover battle, we got to win
the rushing yards, got to win the X place and
and so yeah, you got to go back to the
drawing board and figure out what happened in the game,
why it didn't get done, and get it fixed.
Speaker 8 (01:07:45):
What went into the decision that Luke Montgomery ended up
being the left guard when he moved Donavan Jackson tide.
Speaker 5 (01:07:51):
Yeah, just based on practice, you know, we have the
ones and twos, and and you know, Luke had been
practicing at left guard, you know for the last couple
of weeks, and Austin's you know, spending time right guard.
So where we were in the game, we you know,
we felt like Luke had more practice reps under his
belt to left guard, and I.
Speaker 8 (01:08:06):
Kind of unsats you just obviously, yes, logically, you control
the game by running the ball. Maybe this is an
open simplification, but can you control the game by just
throwing the ball as well?
Speaker 5 (01:08:19):
Listen, I mean we all have to move the ball,
so when we're throwing the ball, we're not running it.
You know, when we're running it, not throwing it. The
bottom line is you got to convert on third down.
So you know, we got to do a good job
in both sides of the ball terms of execution. We
got to put the players in a better position to
be successful, and we got to move the football.
Speaker 6 (01:08:35):
That's the bottom line.
Speaker 5 (01:08:36):
So we can look at run, pass, this and every
the bottom line is we got to convert on third down.
We got to have a balance of running and throwing
and then move the ball down the field and score touchdowns.
Speaker 6 (01:08:44):
I mean that's what it comes down to. So you know,
we can talk to a.
Speaker 5 (01:08:48):
Blue in the face about you know, running and passing.
You want to balance. You got to execute better. That's
the bottom line.
Speaker 6 (01:08:55):
That you guys only had forty four and on meal
down plays. Obviously a third down is may of that
move distashion.
Speaker 2 (01:09:00):
You Seehi that can have three three catches and three
targets four targets.
Speaker 6 (01:09:05):
How do you get him more involved? Even in your
offense seems a little staying at times.
Speaker 5 (01:09:11):
I could convert on third down and keep drives going
to get more plays, you know, because we didn't have
very many plays. When you do the math on it,
you only have that many plays, you know the numbers
are gonna look the way they do.
Speaker 6 (01:09:20):
So you know, we'll always try to figure out ways
to get the ball to our best players.
Speaker 7 (01:09:24):
Damn, And you had said last week you had been
spending more time with the defense.
Speaker 9 (01:09:28):
Does that change around this week?
Speaker 7 (01:09:30):
Do you spend more time with the offense?
Speaker 6 (01:09:32):
Yes?
Speaker 7 (01:09:32):
And you had said with Zen that you know, we'll
see how he works through this week.
Speaker 2 (01:09:37):
Have you gotten the diagnosis on him? Is there a
chance for the play this week?
Speaker 5 (01:09:41):
We'll look at it again today and see where he's
at you know, I think there is a chance, but
we'll look at it today and get an updated for
you later in the week.
Speaker 2 (01:09:53):
So Zen can't go, is he, then you're you're starter?
Speaker 5 (01:09:55):
If you could go, he would be Yeah, how much.
Speaker 3 (01:09:58):
Of that trying to come up with the most seamless move.
Speaker 8 (01:10:03):
Rather than maybe the most painful perhaps or I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:10:07):
If it'd get better now? Obviously try to put the
best line out there.
Speaker 5 (01:10:10):
Yeah, you got to put the best lineup out there,
and you have enough, you know, to not only just
win this game, but you know, be able to play
the rest of the season. So you got to think
of a short term plan and then you got to
come up with a long term plan. So you know,
we'll do everything we can to win this game. And
that's where the focus is right now.
Speaker 6 (01:10:29):
What's the mode of your club coming in this week?
What you know, unbelievable opportunity right here.
Speaker 5 (01:10:34):
I mean this is you know, a chance to go
to Indianapols is on the line, and you know, our
guys are are excited about playing this game. You know,
I think the defense got a lot of confidence coming
off of last week, the way that they played and
creating TFLs and winning the game in the fourth quarter,
I thought they were flying around. And so you know,
if we can get the offense playing the way it
has in the past, combined with the way we played
(01:10:56):
on defense this past week, then you know, that's what
we're looking for in this game.
Speaker 2 (01:11:00):
But how about your quarterback. After the game, he said that,
you know, he's been waiting his whole life to play
in that stadium, to play in this game, he's got
to chip on his shoulder. What do you expect out him?
Speaker 6 (01:11:14):
Yeah, just like everybody else.
Speaker 5 (01:11:15):
I mean, for Will, he grew up in Pennsylvania, so
you know, I guess that that's a little bit different
for him, but for everybody else. I mean again, you know,
just like the Oregon game was, this game's been you know,
circle on our schedule. We know what's at stake here.
So we're gonna have a great week of practice, great
energy in practice, and I'm gonna go into that environment
and go, you know, finish the way that you know,
we didn't have an opportunity or we we didn't do
(01:11:35):
you know, two weeks ago, and so now we have
another opportunity to go do that in this game. So
now we've got to go finish and win the game
in the fourth quarter. We know it's gonna take four
quarters in this game. You know, it always does when
you go play in this environment. It's a very difficult
environment to play in. But you know, we've been been
in this situation before. A guys have been in this
situation before. So now it's now it's go time to
you know, go win this game and get a top
(01:11:55):
five victory. And that's what the guys are focused on
right now.
Speaker 6 (01:11:58):
To coaching staff, everybody in the building is the focus
on winning this game right here.
Speaker 8 (01:12:02):
Austin more podcast, you mentioned the techles for Awsome finishing
the game in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 6 (01:12:07):
On defense, after that two week stretch for how different
was Saturday for the defense?
Speaker 8 (01:12:14):
What was the evaluation overall there?
Speaker 5 (01:12:16):
I thought we played with more precision. I think we
got lined up faster. I thought we played with better
pad level. I thought we played faster. Just everything about
it was crisper to me than it was certainly in
the Oregon game.
Speaker 6 (01:12:32):
What now that that game has been played, what do
you what was the one thing you wanted change the most. Yeah,
I mean that's that's a good question.
Speaker 5 (01:12:43):
I'm probably not going to get into it right now,
but I mean there's a lot of things that they
came into play, and I'm going to kind of leave
those questions right now for in the meeting room, or
you know, leave those conversations from the meeting room. But
you know, the bottom line is, you know, it's our
job to make sure we're putting our guys in the
best position to be successful. I know, you know I
keep saying that over and over again, but we got
(01:13:03):
to do that as coachesn't allow him to play fast,
and we got to do that again this week. These guys,
you know, throw a lot of stuff at you. Got
to be able to handle it. And you know, we
want to make sure that when the game comes down
to the fourth quarter, our guys are able to go
play and win the game in.
Speaker 6 (01:13:18):
The fourth quarter. Got to be able to do that
on offense, end defense.
Speaker 2 (01:13:21):
In this game.
Speaker 6 (01:13:22):
It's a coach's job to make sure that happens.
Speaker 2 (01:13:28):
Ryan day after the buck Eyes or leading into the
game of Penn State, and the comments were the very
definition of coach speak, weren't they. We got to put
the players in the right position, to the best position
to win the game. We we know it's a tough environment,
but I mean, you know, what else do you say?
And that's again the very definition of coach speak right there.
Speaker 3 (01:13:52):
Yeah, didn't say much of anything, No, exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:13:54):
That's what we used to laugh covering the Jim Trussel
press conferences. When he would get done after speaking for
forty five minutes, the great Rusty Miller, the longtime Associated
Press sports editor. After Tress will leave the room, Rusty
would stand up and go, well, he did it again.
He tossed another shut out thirty five minutes and didn't
say a thing, which was pretty accurate. All right, when
(01:14:17):
we come back, it's magnificent seven time. Yes, indeed, get
ready for that. Kelly and I will pick our top
seven NFL teams. I'll have the correct one, Kelly will
have the incorrect one, and we'll do that when we
come back. It's the press box, Fox Sports nine to eighty.
Speaker 1 (01:14:31):
W O name, get on the press box called Marty
(01:14:54):
now at nine to three seven, buy three, one, six,
one seven zero the press box on Fox Sports nine
to eighty w O Ner and.
Speaker 2 (01:15:04):
Welcome back to the program for thirty five. Is the
time here on this Thursday, as we started doing a
few weeks back. It is time once again to unveil
the Magnificent Seven here in and really this is one
(01:15:25):
of the best westerns, The Magnificent Seven to me, the
unforgiven what Clintwood is in recent years, that is, that's
maybe the best, right exactly, that's man.
Speaker 3 (01:15:43):
But you know exactly where you're at.
Speaker 2 (01:15:45):
Exact you know exactly right, you know exactly what the
movie is unforgiven with Clint Eastwood is probably the best
Western in recent memory. Pretend to Yuma is very good.
You've seen that. Tombstone is fabulous. That's did you.
Speaker 3 (01:16:02):
Happen to catch that epic?
Speaker 6 (01:16:05):
That?
Speaker 4 (01:16:08):
What's that guy's name? Huge art, huge actor? He was
in The Bodyguard, Kevin Costah.
Speaker 2 (01:16:14):
Kevin Costner, Kevin Costa, Oh, Horizon, Horizon that Yeah, No,
I have not seen that, have not seen It's long,
I will say that. And he and he he skipped
out on Yellowstone for that.
Speaker 4 (01:16:28):
Yeah, and put up his own money forty million dollars
of his own, not studio money, not venture capitalist money.
Speaker 2 (01:16:37):
That's right. Uh.
Speaker 4 (01:16:39):
And and now everything's on paused because it did not
do great in the theaters on TV.
Speaker 2 (01:16:43):
There were supposed to be like two or three sagas, yeah, right,
three or four? Yeah, three or yeah, three or four? Yeah,
but uh but yeah, I would put unforgiven Tombstone three
ten to Yuma all in that, and I would probably
lean towards Tombstone being the best of all of those.
They are all very good, but Tombstone is just just tremendous.
(01:17:06):
And it's I'll be your huckle bearer. It's not Huckleberry,
which is which is always misquoted. It's huckle bearer. When
the Doc Holliday says I'll be your huckle bearer, it's bearer,
not Barry bearer. So huckle bear, huckle bear is a
uh is a is a a pall bearer who carries
(01:17:27):
carries the the casket. That's what that means. That's what
that means.
Speaker 3 (01:17:31):
Yeah, yeah, well it okay, it changes the meaning.
Speaker 2 (01:17:35):
Actually, may there are shirrets that even say I'll be
your huckleberry. No, it's not what it is, it's not huckleberry.
Listen to how he says it.
Speaker 3 (01:17:43):
Wow, you've seen that movie once once or twice.
Speaker 2 (01:17:48):
Yeah, just watch it. Just watch it the other night,
in fact, just watch it. My my my oldest daughter, Amy,
she can she can tell you do that movie verbatim.
I mean she knows it forwards backwards side where she
can just goes for Baby tortured her with it as
a young as a young l I raised her correctly. Yes, Yes,
she's a Bengels fan. She's a Reds fan, and we
(01:18:11):
have the same movie mindset, which is just tremendous. All right,
all right, time for the Magnificent Seven. First of all,
we last week my number one got beat, so that
will change this week. But I'm sure there will be
some shaking and moving in this week's editions of The
Magnificent Seven. So we'll start.
Speaker 3 (01:18:31):
Kelly b has the four first already.
Speaker 4 (01:18:34):
So we've got the Packers of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Because
they looked good even without Jordan Love. I was real nervous.
He was hobbling around, he got pushed, and he has
a groin injury. Now he's definitely gonna be out for
a couple of weeks. He should have been out for
some weeks because he's obviously been favoring his legs in
(01:18:54):
a weird way because of that knee injury he had
just a couple of weeks ago. So I think it's
good that he's sitting down. But Malik Willis is a
not only a serviceable, serviceable backup, but he brings a
whole new element to their offense that's already explosive. He
can throw the ball down the field, he can take off.
It's very impressive. Number six. Obviously, my Washington commanders have
(01:19:18):
maintained their positions here in the top seven. I'm real
proud of the guys. Obviously this is all because of
I think we're calling it. According to Wikipedia, Mad House
in Maryland is the name of the game.
Speaker 3 (01:19:33):
I don't I don't think.
Speaker 4 (01:19:34):
The name, but yeah, honestly, just seeing what Jayden Daniels
was able to do, even though the defense really laid
an egg there in the fourth quarter, was just inspiring.
I've watched that play no less than one hundred times
this week. I know, right at number five, I have
(01:19:58):
the Bills. I wanted to put the Bills like the
Bills and my number four team. I've thought about swapping,
but right now, the Pittsburgh Steelers look scary. They look scary,
so they're my number four team. The Ravens have dropped
to number three. They were number two, but they had
(01:20:20):
to move them down because the mighty Mighty Lions look
like the team to beat. Now, I say that they're
the team to beat and they're only number two because
you know what it is, Marty, The Chiefs just win
when when, no matter what. But I've got number one,
(01:20:41):
the Chiefs, number two, the Lions, number three, the Ravens,
number four Steelers and number five Bills, number six Commanders,
hell yeah, and number seven the Green Bay Packers.
Speaker 2 (01:20:54):
Well, you're wrong on a lot of those.
Speaker 4 (01:20:56):
Oh my gosh, Marty, I'm giving you giving this is
a cheat sheet. I'm giving you a cheat sheet.
Speaker 2 (01:21:01):
You're wrong on a lot of number seven. Number seven
right now in the correct Magnificent seven will be the
Buffalo Bills at six and two. I'm I'm still not
one hundred percent sold on them yet because they are
a lot like great teams that find a way to
(01:21:24):
lose a game they shouldn't lose. And but going out
and acquiring Amari Cooper I thought was a huge move
for them, get Josh Allen a target, even though he
get even though he I don't think he practiced on
on Wednesday of this week, but they do expect to
have him back. But they have ran away and hid
in that division because everybody else is brutal, everybody else,
(01:21:48):
no one else has more than two wins. But Buffalo,
they're the class of the East. And I think they're
a team that could be a handful for somebody a
little bit deeper because of I will say this too,
Josh Allen also falls into that category of having the
ability to keep both teams in a game. He falls
into that dual threat quarterback category that he can keep
(01:22:10):
both teams. But Buffalo is number six. I have your
commanders or at Buffalo number seven. I have your commanders
at number six. I'm still beating on them to have
a marquee win, you know what I mean, if they
would have beat the Ravens. Okay, yeah, all right, yea.
It's not to take anything away from what they're doing,
(01:22:32):
because I think that they are very dangerous. But you're
getting to the point in the season now where teams
are figuring them out a little bit right now, kind
of understanding where they're at. So I have them at
I have the commanders at number six, at number five,
And this is what I debated for a while, but anymore,
(01:22:56):
it's just hard to you have to embrace the Pittsburgh Steelers.
And it's nauseating to say. It's tough to feel that way,
but it's they're just winning games and just doing it
in the way that the Steelers have always won games.
And now Russell Wilson suddenly looks like he has found
(01:23:18):
the fountain of youth, and their offense suddenly gets up
and down the field. They throw, they can stretch the
field on teams now, which is something that Steelers haven't
done since since I think maybe Ben Roethlisberger was in
his third or fourth year in the NFL, And all
of a sudden, here they are. I have them at
number five. I'm still a believer in the Baltimore Ravens
despite what happened on Sunday. I have them at number four.
(01:23:43):
And the reason I say that is because they can
still run the football when they have to run the
football with Derrick Henry Lamar Jackson missed his second day
of practice today. We were hearing a little bit earlier,
so that's a little concerting. But they do have the
Broncos this week, so I think they're gonna be okay.
(01:24:03):
And it's at home. But uh, and I'm still a
believer in that defense. I'm still not a Lamar Jackson guy.
I mean, this team's five and three. They've only outscored
their opponents by thirty three points. So to me, they're
kind of hanging by a thread right now. Now. Number three.
I debated on this one and I finally decided. And
(01:24:28):
this is not because the nude went this way, but
I went with Philadelphia at noam. Oh my gosh, Marty,
I jumped the Eagles.
Speaker 3 (01:24:35):
Yeah, oh my gosh.
Speaker 2 (01:24:37):
Here's the reasoning why. Here's the reasoning why. You watch
what they did on Sunday. And that's not because they
beat the Bengals, but it's how they beat them. I mean,
they just came right out and just punched them. Right
after that first drive, it was game over. It was
even though it was ten ten to a half. As
a Bengals fan, at ten ten and a half, I'm
(01:24:57):
thinking we're in a lot of trouble. We're in a
lot of trouble game and it proved to be one
hundred percent right. They did and the things that they
do running the football, they're finding a rhythm right now.
I think they're healthy on both sides of the ball,
and I think they're going to be a handful down
the stretchy your commanders are if you better watch out,
(01:25:20):
you better watch out, because I think the Eagles are
coming right.
Speaker 3 (01:25:22):
I know that they can be scared.
Speaker 2 (01:25:23):
I really do. I debated between Philadelphia and Green Bay.
But with Jordan Love out for three weeks with a
growing injury, that that a little nervous there.
Speaker 7 (01:25:38):
With that.
Speaker 2 (01:25:38):
Number two, I have the Detroit Lions. I agree with you,
the Detroit Lions, and I almost put them to number one.
Anytime you come out and roll fifty on somebody in
the NFL, that's and I don't care how bad the
opponent is. Fifty points in the NFL is like one
hundred and forty in the NBA. I mean, that's truckload
of points. And to do it the way they're doing
it just kind of I mean they've outs their opponents
(01:26:00):
by one hundred points this year. Yeah, and it looks
like I mean, and it's they're the only team with that,
with that kind of a margin, the only team in
the league that has done that by more than one
hundred points. One hundred more points ifb out scored their opponents,
and that's what they're doing. And again number one, you
still have to stay with Kansas City, you can't. I mean,
I made a mistake of dropping them last week, but
(01:26:23):
they they won again, and okay, well, we need help receiver.
Let's go to get DeAndre Hopkins. We need help. One
defensive line that's got Let's go out and get Buyern Neuchet. Okay, Okay,
we're fine, everything's great. All they're doing is priming themselves
for the last eleven games of their last ten games
in the season, because what are they seven and zer
right now? So the next ten games you look at
(01:26:46):
their schedule, the remaining ten that they have to play,
they have the Buccaneers on Monday night, then they have
the Broncos, then they go to Buffalo, then they go
to the Panthers. They're winning all four of those games.
Buffalo maybe on a late Sunday afternoon in upstate New
York might be the one where they kind of get
(01:27:07):
caught looking. But then they have they have to go
to Carolina. They'll win that game. Then they have the
Raiders at home.
Speaker 3 (01:27:13):
They'll win that haven't lost since Christmas.
Speaker 2 (01:27:17):
I know they they If you look at what they
have left the game with the Texans on December the
twenty first could be an interesting one, but it's in
Kansas City. They host the Chargers, they go to Cleveland,
they'll win that one. Then they go to Pittsburgh on
Christmas Day. That could be that could be very entertaining.
That could be very entertaining. But it is all set
up in front of them. I mean, they could go
(01:27:39):
seventeen and oh with the way that they're winning games.
Speaker 3 (01:27:43):
And how repeat, Oh my gosh, I want to throw up.
Speaker 2 (01:27:47):
I know they believe me. I'm not. I'm not any
more happy about it than you are. Gosh, but wow,
until they lose, there might they're gonna be number one
in my Magnificent seven until they lose. I just can't.
Speaker 3 (01:28:01):
I can't change I understand completely.
Speaker 2 (01:28:02):
Can't change it. Can't change it. So there you have
at the Magnificent seven, four to forty eighth the time,
it's the press box Fox Sports nine eighty w.
Speaker 1 (01:28:08):
E get on the press box called Marty now at
nine three seven, buy three one six one seven zero
(01:28:29):
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WNA four
fifty two.
Speaker 2 (01:28:34):
Here in the press box, Fox Sports ninet eighty w one,
about ten minutes that's in a program here this afternoon.
Thank you for being with us today tomorrow on the show,
our usual football Friday programming. We'll be with you right
up until about four fifteen tomorrow when we have the
iHeart High School Football Blitz, the weekly preview of the
opening where this tomorrow show will be the preview of
the opening rhyme of the playoffs which start all across
(01:28:55):
the state of Ohio tomorrow. So we're looking forward to that,
looking forward to those games. Always fun the covering playoff games,
and looking forward to that again tomorrow. So looking forward
to that, and we'll have that for you coming up tomorrow.
We mentioned some of the injuries the Brown's injury list
who didn't practice. The Bengals practice list today included Orlando
(01:29:18):
Brown Junior, who did not practice. Sam Hubbard was limited today,
Charlie Jones was limited with a groin injury. Amarius Memes
did practice, but I was listed by having an ankle problem.
Geno Stone as limited with a shin injury. Joe Burrow
right wrist full practice. T Higgins did not practice today
(01:29:39):
again quad recept. So you wonder if, as Joe Burrow
had said earlier, that this Saturday or the Sunday rather
as a must win game. Well, every game is a
must win game. Then when you're three and five and
having one and home, every game is the most win.
But especially near you the trade deadline, you have to
(01:29:59):
wonder if a guy t Higgins, who obviously wants more money,
and I think it's pretty much a foregone conclusion he
won't be wearing a Cincinnati uniform next year if he,
I don't want to say publicly does this, but some
of these guys tap out a little bit, maybe mentally,
(01:30:22):
because you lose, you lose Sunday, you're three in six,
you're zero and five at home, you can't beat the Raiders,
who will have uh Desmond rhetorict quarterback on Sunday. Yeah,
with Gardner Minshew is dealing with with some sort of
(01:30:46):
h yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:30:48):
If you lose that game.
Speaker 2 (01:30:51):
And there you are at three and six, and I
think the realization of where you at are at really
really sets in if you lose on Sunday, that pretty
much right now there's still that era of hope that well,
(01:31:12):
maybe we win this one. And I'm not saying that
they're going to and then go to Baltimore. And if
Lamar Jackson is not ready to go, who knows on
Thursday Night. Again, I'm not saying they're winning that game either,
because they probably won't. But if you can get to
that game at four and five and somehow managed to
(01:31:36):
sneak out of there with one, That's what we think
about those goofy Thursday night games, which I've said before
and I will continue to say as long as we're
doing this program. I hate those Thursday night games. Just
can't stand them.
Speaker 4 (01:31:46):
I mean, I don't like the Jets, but half their
team is injured and has to play tonight, right and.
Speaker 2 (01:31:52):
Exactly that's the problem with these games. But if all
that goes south, and especially if the Bengals lose on
Sunday and then probably we'll lose in Baltimore week from tonight,
that's three and seven. I think you got I think
you're gonna some guys kind of at least mentally tap out.
Speaker 4 (01:32:12):
Sure, I mean, especially a guy like T Higgins who,
exactly his money going forward right now is gonna rely
on his health, right everyone doesn't. It's not like he
needs to put more on tape. We know what T
Higgins can do now, he has to to survive this season.
Speaker 2 (01:32:28):
But the question Kelly about him is going to be
his health. And because of all the great receivers in
the league, he and Stefan Diggs might be the ones
who simular are the most injury So that's going to
be something that I think is may cost him. Not
(01:32:51):
I mean because somebody will shell out a lot of
money for him, because there is a tremendous upside, because
there will always be in the back of your mind, well,
if he stays healthy, we can keep him healthy. But
I just wonder if you know you're three and seven,
and you know that it's at three and seven, it
is over. There's no question about that. It's over. At
three and seven. You're not winning seven in a row. Well,
(01:33:13):
if you think about it's not winning seven out of nine,
I mean, that's not gonna happen either or the rest
of the way. So I just wonder if that, if that,
if that would happen to some guys that are in
the last year of their deals, that some have voiced
wanting to be traded. I mean Trey Hendrickson said that
back in camp.
Speaker 3 (01:33:32):
Yeah, but that was that was just talking tough to
get to so people would listen.
Speaker 2 (01:33:36):
No, I know, I know, but still I mean he's
far underpaid for being what he is, which is one
of the best edge rushers in the NFL. And so
you just you want, I just wonder about that part
of the game from a mental standpoint, when you have
(01:33:56):
vastly underperformed and have just not gotten the job done.
It could it could take in a different different direction,
which would be very ugly the rest of the way out.
I think you go from Super Bowl aspirations to the
beginning of the season to to uh, you know, five
and twelve, six and eleven, which neither one of those
(01:34:20):
I think are off the table right now with the
and with this amount of talent. Or maybe we've been
food all year. Maybe they're not as good as we
thought they were. There's that possibility too.
Speaker 3 (01:34:32):
That's I mean, I think Joe is still putting up numbers.
Speaker 4 (01:34:34):
So Joe is still a top five quarterback with the
worst I guess supporting Cast, but.
Speaker 2 (01:34:39):
That we've known we're supporting Cast.
Speaker 4 (01:34:41):
The defense is not holding up there in because we
see Joe as bawling. Why is the other team always
scoring more points?
Speaker 2 (01:34:48):
Yeah, Like I said, maybe they're just not as good
as we thought they were. That's a the stake possibility too,
and that line that I forget which NFL expert I
use that term loosely said earlier in the year. You
can be a good football team but being but play
bad ball, but play bad football. Or you can be
a bad football team and still have great talent. I mean,
(01:35:10):
and those things are very accurate, both of them are,
and they're true with all that's true. All right, that'll
do it for today's program. We're back with you tomorrow
three to four fifteen. Shorten Joe Kelly Bes back on
Monday for overreaction. Monday, the day before you know what
next week. Yeah, action on Tuesday in the Mid American commerce,
That's what next. That's what Monday is. I like that.
(01:35:32):
We're back with you on Friday. It's the press box
actually being with us today. Fox Sports nine eighty w
