Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the press box with Marty Banister, the latest
on all local sports from Wright State to the Dayton Flyers,
from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals and Browns.
Called Marty now at nine to three seven by three,
one six, one seven zero the press Box on Fox
Sports nine eighty WNA.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Before the Chiln's playing the Ravens, good football team. We
know that a good week of practice. Guys ready to go.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
The NFL season is hours away, five hours and twenty
minutes in fact, before we have kickoff in Kansas City
as the defending Super Bowl champion Ravens gets set to
take on the or Super Bowl champion Chiefs gets set
to take on the Baltimore Ravens. Welcome to the press Box,
Fox Sports nine eighty w ol and A. I'm Marty Banister.
(00:50):
We're glad you're with us here on this Thursday afternoon.
Kelly be alongside for the ride as always, and we're
with you right up until five o'clock. Coming up on
the program today at three twenty, friend Scott Dockerman from
the Athletic will join us talk a little college football. Yes,
I know, the NFL fires up tonight but college football
still a close second to the NFL. And we'll talk
(01:11):
to Scott about what he saw in Week number one
and look ahead to what's coming up on Week number
two of the NFL season, and the second I were
talking about high school football our friend Jim Dematrof, the
head football coach over at Springfield Catholic Center. We'll check it.
Kind of a unique story and they're a Division seven
team with less than twenty players on their roster and
they're out of the gate at two and zero. So
(01:32):
we'll talk to Jim. Jim's been to head coach, he
was at Springfield North, he was on the Upper Arlington
staff for a number of years. I think when they
won the state championship back in two thousand. That's so impressive,
it is, it really is. Well. They had a game
last year, Kelly where I want to say, they only
had thirteen players dress and still won. Wow, which is
(01:53):
remarkable when you think about it. But we'll talk to
Jimmy about that and just what it's like to coach
in a situation like that where it's got to be
hard to practice. You only seventeen kids, how do you practice?
You can't go too you can't do any of those things. No,
I guess you just have to.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
Yeah, I mean that's a good question. How do you
even set that up? The math is not mathing for me.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
No, well it never does for me. So that's what
we have coming up on the program for you today.
A couple of fan pulls up for you this afternoon,
as we always like to do here in the press
box on Fox Sports nine. Ad W O pretty basic
today with one of them who wins tonight, the Chiefs
or the Ravens. It's pretty simple with week number one
(02:36):
tonight and right now the Chiefs getting eighty three percent
of the vote doesn't surprise me there as at being
as you all know. As you all know who listens
to the program, I'm a Bengals fan. I if it were
possible for both teams to lose, I'd be exceedingly happy
with that. But unfortunately, I don't even know if a
tie would be any good or not. The TYSIPES helps
you as far as seating and type acres are concerned.
(03:01):
So but don't kick off at about a twenty tonight
on Kansas City and we'll hear more from Andy Reid
coming up a little bit later. On during the program
today as they get for the Baltimore Ravens side or
other fan poll tonight or today. Rather has to do
with a Week one game in the NFL. Can a
loss or a win set the tone in a season
(03:22):
for a team? And I think there are many different
ways to look at it. And of course we've discussed
what the Bengals have been unable to do to start
the season. What is it one to nine through week
two in Zach Taylor's tenure, which is just staggeringly bad,
and all the chips are laid out this year for
a much better start for that team. So we'll let
(03:46):
you give your thoughts on that. Your choices in that
category depends on the opponent. A big win, yes, could
really jump start your season. An upset loss could do
it as well. But take it the other direction, and
the other aspect of this is, well, the season is
just simply too long to really worry about week number one,
And right now that's getting sixty seven percent of the vote.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
So yeah, and that's actually that. I like that. I
like that you did that. But I think that's why
I'm leaning.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
All about making sure that you're that you're happy when
I put.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
Thank you finally, honestly finally. But that's actually why I'm
leaning towards the Ravens winning, because the Chiefs showed last
year they don't need to be dominant in the in
the regular season to still have an awesome run in
the postseason. And they have, like you've mentioned, played way
more games than anyone else, and so I think they
(04:38):
will try to kind of reserve their bodies a little bit,
and if the Ravens want to run all over him
in Game one, they're like, it's fine, we'll see you
later in the season. Maybe, you know what I mean,
Maybe because we're gonna be there. That's how the Chiefs
walk around.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Well. Well, hopefully they'll wear them out because they get
a couple of extra days before they play the Bengals
a week from Sunday, So true, a couple of decks
or days to get ready. So but those are your
fan polls today. Again, we have those with you right
up until about four to forty five or so this afternoon.
It's update you on some other things going on. The
Reds are in action today, wrapping up their series with
the Houston Astros, and the Reds have taken a one
(05:15):
to nothing lead as they go to the eighth inning
at Great American Ballpark. Another afternoon start today is in Tampa,
where Minnesota leeds Tampa four to three. That game's going
to the top half of the eighth inning at the
Tropic Cana Tropic Canda Field. There are a couple of
other afternoons starts. Seattle is in Oakland to face the Athletics.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are in San Francisco to tangle with
(05:36):
the Giants. And at six forty Philadelphia, Miami, Washington, Pittsburgh, Colorado,
Atlanta the Dodgers and Texas or the Angels rather in
Texas a little bit later on this evening, and Guardians Baseball.
They get the day off after their series in Kansas City.
Still leading the American League Central Division. Race Course Dragons Baseball,
(05:57):
the playoffs are coming up, starting on Twoesday. Ever, we're
going to take the program out the day Or Ballpark
on Tuesday and broadcast from three to five out of
day Or Ballpark and preview the opening round of the
Midwest League playoffs. So we're looking forward to that as
we talk a little Dayton Dragons Baseball, and that again
will come your way on Tuesday of this program. Also
next week on the show, we have lined up next
(06:19):
week Darren Hurtz, who is the new head basketball coach
at Wittenberg from the University of Dayton staff. Darren's gonna
visit visit with us next week on the phone. We've
got that lined up yesterday, so we'll look forward to
hearing from him as he takes over as the head
basketball coach at Wittenberg over in Springfield. So he'll join
us of course on Anthony Grant's staff, great amount of
success there and stepping into his first head coaching job.
(06:42):
So we'll looking forward to talking to Darren next week
here in the program well as always have some other
things as well for you too as we get past
week number one of the National Football League season. Jamar Chase, Well,
we still stay status quo right now, waiting to see
whether or not how much he plays, if he plays,
if he assigned, if there's a contract, all of those
(07:04):
things before Sunday's kick with New England. And as we
talked about yesterday, Kelly, it's to me it shows you,
I think where the franchise is because this has not
been disruptive A lot of teams this could have been.
I mean, obviously it was a big story in preseason camp,
but it wasn't a story to where it just turned
(07:27):
everybody was. That's all they focused on, that's all they
carried about. Because we've seen that before with holdouts and
other teams it's been an issue. But maybe that's the
type of oh, I don't know, locker room that Zach
Taylor has built, the type of you hear this term
you used a lot culture. I think that's a big
(07:47):
part of it right now. That and when you have
some stability across the board, coach, your starting quarterback, your ownership,
you can kind of tap dance your way like that.
And I think it's what the Bengals have been doing
through this preseason.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
I think you're absolutely right about that. I actually think
that when we see this sort of flail and teams
kind of shaking because of it, it's usually because the
person holding out is the team. If the person holding
out is so integral to everyone's success, the Bengals will
(08:23):
be successful even if Jamar Chase doesn't play. I don't
think that anyone thinks they're gonna get to the heights
that they should be at with Jamar Chase, but no
one thinks like, oh, they're gonna go one in sixteen
because Jamar Chase isn't playing. You still have t Higgins
this year, Committee by Titan, and you have Joe Burrow
(08:43):
who can just make things happen. So even when you
have a star like Jamar Chase holding out, the organization
as a whole, and I mean the defense has been bolstered,
looks like it it looks like we're gonna see in action,
but it looks like it's been bolstered. I think the
team feels like we are still a team. And we've
heard players in that locker room say there's no hard
(09:06):
feelings about Jamar Chase trying to get his money. So
culture absolutely, but when everything else is so stable, it's like,
all right, I mean maybe we can't be perfect, but
we're gonna we're gonna be okay.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Right, We're gonna be okay, and that's it. But I
think your point at the top of that was we
know what we're going we know what we can do,
but it's a different level. If Number one is out
there on the field, it goes it goes from yeah,
we know we're going to the playoffs too, Yeah, we're
gonna make a deep run in the exactly, and that's
the mentality to it all. Right. Now, we got into
this discussion yesterday too late, late in the show about
(09:41):
the perception from somewhere that the Browns are not getting
national respect. And again I did some research last night
and did some reading and just tried to find out.
I can't find anybody who says that. Now, are they
put on the same level as Kansas City, Detroit, San Francisco, and,
(10:04):
to a certain extent, Cincinnati. No, they're not. But that
is that national disrespect? I don't think so. I couldn't
find a story where somebody said this team's awful, They're
gonna win three games. Nobody. I didn't see that anywhere
I am.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
So that question for me came out of left field.
I have no idea. I don't understand how. I mean,
even I mean, every playoff team last season I think
earns a little bit of respect. The question I think becomes,
can you go back? Can you get back to there?
Can you go past where you were? But it certainly isn't,
(10:39):
especially when no massive changes have happened. It's not like
they lost their quarterback. They supposedly got their quarterback. So
why are we all of a sudden thinking this team
that went to the playoffs with an eighty eight year
old Joe Flacco can't get back there? What are we
talking about? Feel this question is more disrespectful than the
(11:03):
alleged disrespect right happening around the team.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
So yeah, I just I was just surprised at that.
I And I again, as I said, I don't know
where that and maybe I missed the story or two
that's a possibility that I.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
Get alerts. I have not seen that story.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
I turn things, I got too many other things that
happened into my phone. I can't worry about alerts from
one hundred and four different things. But but yeah, it
just to me, it just again, it just kind of
it just kind of I just didn't really understand the question. Uh,
and it was. It was asked by Mary Kay Cabot,
who covers the Browns on a daily basis, and despite
(11:43):
what a lot of folks in Cleveland think, the majority
of people in Cleveland do a pretty good job of
covering that team. The media in Cleveland gets thrashed severely
by listeners and UH readers and online samplers for whatever reason, Uh,
they just get trash because they're not in the browns
(12:04):
hip pocket. They ask questions, which is what they're supposed
to do.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
That's the job.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
But yeah, but that was her question. Again. I'm just
just still trying to figure out.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
I mean, I think I think it is part of
the pessimism of the areas of Cleveland. But I don't
even if you're not like, oh, we're about to make
a Super Bowl run, which, by the way, the Commanders
say every year, So I mean, get in line. You know,
we're we're always on the on the way. But unless
like I don't, I just don't understand where this energy
(12:35):
is coming from besides the fans, because I mean nationally,
I think there is some respect for what you were
able to do last season, and everyone looking is like,
y'all should be better if your quarterback gets it together.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
Speaking of your beloved Commanders, they today fired an employee
one day after a video surface man in which he
made comments about the team's players being anti gay.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
I got an alert about this too.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Here you go, also accusing Cowboys under Jerry Jones of
being racist and called NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell a fifty
million dollar puppet correct rail and Teen, Washington's vice president
of content the previous four years, also criticized fans and
called them mouth breathers. The team today confirmed the firing
via a spokesperson. Washington had suspended and Teen on Wednesday,
(13:27):
shortly after the video from the O'Keefe media group was
played on social media platforms now number one this ray
l and teen was completely wrong with the things that
he said. That's wrong. But what what the heck is
going on with the O'Keefe media group that they went
ahead and published it and put it on social media platform?
Speaker 4 (13:47):
Can we can we talk a little bit about how
this was set up. He thought he was on a
tender date, so he I know this is this is
this is nasty work. This is nasty work, Marty. He
thought he was on a tender date with a woman
who was not part of the media, and he was
secretly recorded. I don't know where they were that you
(14:08):
can secretly record someone like this and there aren't legal situations,
but he was secretly recorded, and so he thinks he's
on a date and he's just trying to probably talk tough, like, oh,
I'm in the NFL DA DA.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
And who has an ax to grind with Reil and team.
Who are we kidding here? Wow, I've never heard of
this person.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
He apparently used to be the content guy for the
Jets as well. I don't. I've never heard this guy's name,
although I am, I can't even I'm a little annoyed
at some of the content that comes out of the
Commander's camp. I do a lot of head shaking at it.
So for me, I was like, I think maybe we
needed to move on in anyway. But this, this is
(14:59):
a tough one. But this is tough. I agree he
was absolutely wrong and you don't know that, lady, so
maybe watch your mouth a little bit. But to think
you're going on a date and then the next day
you're on on X and Facebook and every other social
media site ranting essentially, yeah, that's none of it's good.
(15:21):
None of it's good.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
As I said, the O'Keefe media group deserves some responsibility
and this as well too. And I'm not saying that
Rayel and teen is completely on. Uh is not is not?
Uh is not?
Speaker 4 (15:33):
Uh He's wrong here?
Speaker 3 (15:34):
He sure, Yeah, the things that he said are obviously
completely and it sounds like what you were saying he's
just trying to pump himself up on Tender.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
Yeah he thought he met a lady on a dating app.
Oh yeah, I guess you've been married forever. But Tender
is a is a dating app where you you put
your your name, your picture of you, and some things
you like long walks on the beach, whatever, and then
you find other singles. Well, people say they're single, but
(16:06):
you find out.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
I have heard of it, Okay, I didn't know it
was to that. Yeah, you go on dates with these,
like a message board or something.
Speaker 4 (16:17):
Oh, okay, a message board, Marty. It is twenty twenty four,
so we are not using message boards like that anymore.
I haven't been on a message board since nineteen ninety eight.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
Alright, thirty seventeen is the time. I'm gonna go find
a message board like that. Jamar Chase practicing today for
the Bengals while I walked over to the practice facility
alongside t Higgins and took the practice field today for
the Bengals. So we'll keep an eye on that for
you again. If we close in on kickoff. The NFL
season starts in five hours. The Ravens and Chiefs in
Kansas City when we come back to talk to little
(16:50):
college football. Our Brent Scott Document from the Athletic Business.
Where's the press Blacks, Black Sports nine eighty WNA.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three, seven by three, one, six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty wn Andy.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
We're back with you here on this Thursday afternoon. Great
to have you with us the press box, Fox Sports
nine eighty w one. I'm Marty Banister. We are a
day away from high school football. A lot of games
across the landscape coming up tomorrow. The NFL season starts tonight.
There will be college football games tonight, Tomorrow night and
all throughout the weekend. And let's look back at what
happened in week number one and look ahead to week
(17:53):
number two. We always enjoy our visits with our friend
Scott Doctrman from the athletic kind enough to join us
on this Thursday afternoon. It's hard to believe that we're
already into week number two of the college football season.
It just these times just fly by now, these days,
don't they. It's amazing, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (18:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (18:10):
Absolutely, I mean, you know when it starts to get
really scary when you think in like in sixteen days
will be a third of the way through the season
for a lot of teams, and you just go, You've
been looking forward to this season for nine months and
then it just goes so quickly, and everybody complains and
wonders and goes through these cycles, and you're like, slow
(18:31):
it down. This is the best time of year. You've
got to enjoy it, even if you're complaining about certain
things on the field. Don't speed up football season because
you're gonna miss it the second it's gone.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
There's no question. I think you're one hundred percent right
on that. Let's go back and look at week number one.
We had a poll question up on the show I
think it was Tuesday, where we asked people who made
the biggest statement? Was it Notre Dame, was it Southern California?
Was it the Big ten going seventeen and one? Was
it Miami of Florida. One listener responded he thought the
biggest statement was made by Florida State losing again to
(19:06):
Boston College. From what UC satary, what stood out the
most for you on week number one?
Speaker 6 (19:12):
Yeah, I'd probably go with USC and being able to
beat LSU and and do it in a way that
I didn't think that they could, which was be able
to handle LSU's physicality and go toe to toe and
then and then when when at the end, I thought
that was really impressive. What we saw at a USC
(19:32):
last year, in the last couple of years is dynamic offense,
no defense, and I thought that was going to be
a recipe for disaster going into the Big Ten if
they that they even tried that, because it just you're
gonna get bogged down against some really good defensive teams
and that.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
Don't really hurt them.
Speaker 6 (19:50):
But I thought way that they were able to play
even up with LSU and then pull out the win
was most impressive. But I would say a close second
has to be just the absolute flop that is Florida
State to go to Ireland and lose light against Georgia
Tech and then to come back and get you know,
really beaten down. There was nothing, no fluke to it.
(20:11):
From Boston College At home, I thought, right now that
you know, FSU is really floundering, and then what does
that mean for the ACC when you start to get
into the playoff discussions, I'd say not a whole lot
right now. I think they're in trouble.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
And that was going to be my next question because
here is your thought to be preseason favorite. And I
know a lot of folks are kind of pointing towards
Miami in this category as well too, Scott, but Florida
States are I mean, and both those losses were ACC
losses too. It wasn't as if they jumped out of
the league and lost a couple of non conference games.
I mean, they're in an zero and two hole right now.
(20:48):
They can I mean, is it fair to say they
can pretty much hang that part of their season up
right now? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (20:56):
Absolutely, I think it's gonna They're gonna have to went
out and then probably went some sort of a tie
breaker just to get in the ACC championship game. I mean,
they only play eight games in the ACC. I liked
the Big Ten where it's nine and they lost to
Georgia Tech in Boston College, which I mean, maybe both
teams are better than what we think they are or
(21:17):
what we give them credit for. But you know, I
don't think anybody had them on the bingo card is
potential ACC challengers. So I think when you look at
at Florida State, how are they going to be able
to handle a Miami or Clemson or some of those
teams just and then Florida late.
Speaker 5 (21:34):
In the year.
Speaker 6 (21:34):
I mean, who knows what Florida is going to be
like at that point. But overall, and then you look
big picture with the with the ACC. I mean, Miami
looked very impressive and beating Florida, but Clemson did not
look impressive at all going against Georgia. So the ACC
right now, you're looking at maybe a champion, and you're
gonna get a champion, but that might be it. They
(21:57):
may not even have an argument against the other differ
instance when it comes to and getting an extra at
large team.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
Scott Docerman from the Athletic visiting with us. We're talking
college football as we look back at week number one,
look ahead to week number two of the season. A
couple other things from week number one, Scott, I know
you're base in Iowa. The simple fact that the Hawkeye
scored forty points was that the major shot coming out
out of Iowa City on Saturday.
Speaker 6 (22:25):
Yeah, I thought that they had a potential to really
do some good things offensively. In the first half, they
scored six points and we're just like oh, this is
just like it's been before, except this is against an
FCS team. And then in the second half, on six possessions,
they scored five touchdowns and we're pretty dominant in doing so.
And then that kind of looked the part of all right,
it's the offense is at least back to mediocre or
(22:48):
average and they're playing against an FCS team and they're
battering them. And then but most impressive for Iowa was
Cade McNamara completed thirteen or fourteen passes in the second
half and only one in completion and that was a drop.
So to get that kind of efficiency through the air
they had just like Ohio State, they had a receiver,
a true freshman, make his first career start and catch
(23:09):
two touchdown passes, so that he was pretty impressive. So
overall that was a really nice win for Iowa. They
looked good, looked good on every aspect, and that's you know, again,
it's against an FCS team, but it's one that you
just kind of go, Okay, they should give him a
little bit of confidence and consistency, which they haven't had
for you know, a few years on that side of
(23:30):
the ball.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
The Big ten as a whole goes seventeen and one.
As we joked the other day, Minnesota did not get
the email apparently that you were supposed to win your
opening round game, your opening week game. Is that a
sign of just basically who some of these teams played?
Scott or is seventeen and one a pretty good indicator
of what this league is?
Speaker 6 (23:52):
I think that it's a pretty good indicator because some
of the wins were impressive against good teams. And I
was at the Minnesota game as well, and you know,
and that could have gone either way. I mean, their
field goal kicker missed a field goal he usually makes
on the game's final play. But I think when you
start to look at some matchups that went the Big
(24:12):
Ten's way, obviously USCN LSU, like I talked about earlier,
but you know, I thought there were some that really
kind of jumped out of me. And Northwestern beating Miami
of Ohio. I thought Miami of Ohio was going to
be and still maybe the best team in the MAC.
I thought that was going to be a real issue
for Northwestern, and and getting down a dirty and winning
thirteen to six, I thought was really impressive. And then
(24:33):
Penn State played really well against West Virginia, Maryland blew
out Yukon, which they should do, but that you never
know what you're going to get with Maryland and the
fact that you know, new quarterback still came up and
won decisively. I thought that was really impressive. And and
you know, and I think a few other teams, even
against FCS competition, Washington and Iowa did what they had
(24:57):
to do in one decisively enough where you feel like, okay,
they're not they're not in rough shape.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
So Scott document with us from the athletic talking college
football here in the press box, Fox Sports nine eighty
w Olne. I know it's still weak number. We're going
into week number two right now. There are a number
of huge games on the horizon. But one of the
things I wanted to ask you about, Scott was Michigan.
They kind of slept walk their way through the win
over Fresno State, and naturally people in Columbus are all
(25:26):
all at tither because they think the Wolverines are down.
I think while that was obviously a good win for them,
we'll find out. I think really this Saturday at noon
when we when Texas comes to the Big House, that
will obviously be the one. Well, we'll kind of get
a pretty good handle on the Wolverines this year.
Speaker 6 (25:42):
Yeah, this is an obvious barometer for the for the
Wolverines in for the Longhorns, so that matter too. I mean,
this is really sets us up for you know, are
these teams national title contenders? Are they playoff contenders? Or
are they also rans? And I think that we could
get a pretty clear vision of what that brings this week.
(26:02):
And I wasn't a real big fan of what Michigan
did the other day and watching most of it after
I got back from a game. You know, sleepwalking is fair.
I mean late in the game it said thirty to ten,
but I got the impression it was going to be
a lot closer than that until Will Johnson had that
pick six late. I mean they're up twenty three to ten,
and Resident State was driving and he just felt like, Okay,
(26:25):
Michigan's working on some things here now, quarterback, I don't
know which way they're going to go here, you know,
are they going to go you know, Warren or are
they going to go Orgy? I know Warren got the
start Orgy play a little bit, and I'm just kind
of curious as to you know which direction they go
and stick with and what works, and but you know,
(26:46):
I think they're a work in progress. I'm not overly
sold yet on Texas being able to go on the
road in the Big House against that defense, because I
still think they play pretty good defense in Michigan and
being able to walk all over the Wolverine. So I
think it might be, you know, a fairly competitive game,
and you know, Michigan will flex its muscles a little bit.
(27:08):
But I still think Texas is probably a little bit
better than they are right now.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
Do we make anything out of Oregon? Again, maybe the
fair way to describe that would be sleepwalking its way
past Idaho twenty four or fourteen?
Speaker 4 (27:21):
I think you do.
Speaker 6 (27:22):
I think you look at that and you wonder, okay,
what what where are they mentally right now? Because Idaho
is an FCS team and you win by ten at home,
and you put up some good numbers statistically, but you
know that still twenty four to fourteen, that's just not
a number that you would expect at Oregon. I think
(27:42):
you know, we all would have went no way. So
that's the thing with almost ounds in the final score.
I think we've all would have thought it would be
forty eight to fourteen or bigger, and Dylan Gabriel had
a lot of yards. But this week's is really fascinating
for me when they're playing Boise State and you know,
that's not a team you can play like that against
and pull out a win. So it really will tell
(28:05):
me a lot about them and how they're going to
be able to compete in the Big Ten because they've
got some tough games. I mean, you know, obviously Ohio
State goes out there, but then they got it in November.
They got to go to Michigan, they got to go
to Wisconsin. Those aren't easy places to play anytime of
the year, let alone and when it gets colder, and
so I don't know if Oregon is. I really want
(28:25):
to see more out of them before I start to really,
you know, focus on what they can do.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
Final moment was Scott document from the Athletic as we
taught college football. I said this when we came up
back on the air on Tuesday after an off day Monday.
The one that impressed me maybe more than anybody, and
I know Marcus Freeman very well. Scott was Notre Dame
going to Texas A and m and winning in that atmosphere,
they look like a different Notre Dame team, big physical,
(28:53):
They got punched in the mouth and they punched right back.
In past years they've kind of rolled over a little
bit in that regard. I came away very impressed with
the fighting Irish from what you've been able to gather.
Do you feel the same way.
Speaker 6 (29:05):
I think that they are. They they put themselves in
that position now where they are considered an obvious team.
They would be in everybody's playoff list right now because
going to A and M is not easy playing in
that atmosphere. You know, they've got some turnover there, new
quarterback and and losing Joe Alt, who's a you know,
in the NFL first round pick. And yet you know,
(29:28):
to be able to go down there and win by ten,
I think that's really impressive as Elko's debut for for
the Aggies, so there's a lot of motivation there. So
I think being able to go and beat an SEC
team on the road like that says a lot for
the Irish. And and you know it, it's kind of
unfortunate that you know, throughout the year, I mean some
(29:49):
of their teams, you know, they're they're gonna play usc Light,
they're gonna play Florida State. But you just wonder, you know,
how much are they going to get through the course
of the regular season and are they gonna get challenged much?
But I think they're in the in the position now
where they kind of own the rights to get into
the tournament, and this was their big, big test right
out of the game.
Speaker 3 (30:10):
You hit on the point right there. I was going
to bring up as we wrap it up here. After
beating Texas A and M they have ahead of them
now Northern Illinois at Purdue, Miami of Ohio, and you
talked about them, that's still a team that's going to
be a contender in to MAC. Then they play Host
of Louisville, then they have Stanford. I mean, this is
a stretch of games coming up here where they're going
to be a heavy favorite in every one of those games.
(30:33):
So that win set them up in very good position,
didn't it.
Speaker 6 (30:38):
For sure? And I think you look at those teams
and and you can see little aspects there of you know,
one of those teams being able to do something against them.
I mean Miami of Ohio. I mean, it wasn't that
long ago I think Toledo really took Notre Dame to
the wire. I think Miami of Ohio is a pretty
good team. I think Chuck Martin's a great coach, and
and then I look at Louisville with Jeff Brohm and
(31:01):
how he kind of conducts offense. That's going to present
its own challenge. But Notre Dame is going to be
favored in all those games, and it's not going to
be until they start playing. You know, a Florida State
who's obviously floundering and who knows where their season is
going to go, and USC late where they're really going
to get teams where they're at least is going to
look like them physically. So I expected the Irish to
(31:23):
go on quite a role here.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
It's always a pleasure talking college football. Getting the insight
of Scott document from the Athletic. You can follow him
at Scott Doctorman as well as his coverage on the Athletic.
Always a pleasure, my friend. I appreciate you spending some
time with us today talking college football. Always good to
catch up with you, all.
Speaker 6 (31:39):
Right, Thanks for having me on, very much, appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
And College Football Week number two is right or right. Well,
for me, it's week number three again, because as you know,
I'm not a week zero guy. I don't buy that
at all. But is the official schedule. It's week number two,
so we can roll with that and a lot of
games coming up, a lot of big games. That Michigan
Texas game is one that a lot of people will
be keep being their eyes on at the Big House.
Derek Jeter is coming back to be a part of
(32:04):
that Michigan grad. Yeah, he'll be a part of that
when they kick it off at noon in ann Arbor
on Saturday. Texas and Michigan. I would think the highlight
game of this week all across the college football landscape.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
What's high versus Western Michigan. Well that's just slightly lower. Yeah,
just won one notch one notch down.
Speaker 3 (32:24):
At four hundred dollars a take. Yeah, it's the press
box ten year old Fox Sports nine eighty.
Speaker 1 (32:29):
W get on the press box called Marty now at
nine to three seven by three one six, one seven
(32:50):
zero the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty w
O n E.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
Back with you in the press box three forty here
Fox Sports nine eighty w O A Marty Banners. I
had to have you with us again here on this
Thursday afternoon, as we continue along here talking sports with
you right up until five o'clock here in the press box.
We had Dave metzeled on the other day from Bally
Sports talking about the Johnny Goudreau and the Matthew Gaudreau
(33:16):
tragedies that have certainly affected really, as I said, I
think the entire sports world, the death of the two
players who were hit by a drunk driver while cycling
on the eve of their sister's wedding on Saturday in
New Jersey. Last night at Nationwide Arena in downtown Columbus,
(33:36):
they held a vigil for fans to show up, and
from some folks I know who went to that, who
I connected with earlier in the day. Today, the feeling
of sadness and just the overall paul that is cast
(33:57):
upon that area and that franchise and that's that hockey
family is just staggering. If you've seen pictures, they are
over all over social media. The crowd that showed up
last night, a lot of people who may not even
be in depth hockey fans, who were ones who had
(34:20):
heard what had happened and wanted to just express their feelings.
There were hundreds of those folks who turned out as
well too. But it's just such a such an awful,
awful thing that has happened, and the way people are
responding to it, I think shows you the closeness. And
I think it shows you as well too, Kelly, And
we've kind of touched on this before, but I think
(34:41):
it shows you sometimes when people think that's just sports, Okay, fine,
I get that, But what a team and a community,
the relationship the two have with one another, be it
a professional sports franchise, be it a college sports athletic program,
way the city, or the way the community they wrap
(35:03):
themselves around that team, and when something like this happens,
the outpouring of emotion for this, I don't think you
should be surprised by it. Quite frankly, it's obviously the
depth of this and there's nothing, no other way to
describe it than a tragedy with the Gadrill family. But
(35:23):
you see what, because I guess I said a lot
of times people think it's just sports, doesn't matter, it does.
It does to a lot of people. I agree for
many reasons.
Speaker 4 (35:32):
I agree. I think people do discount the impact that
sports has on a community. I think if you see,
especially in some of these small communities, and we see
it a lot in high school football around Ohio, everybody
cares about what happens on the field on the court,
because not only is it an extension of you know,
(35:57):
these are these kids came from our community, but you're
also representing your community when you go play other places.
So it's not just hey, this is our insular thing.
It's a flag, if you will. These people represent us
even when they're not in our area. And so absolutely
the outpouring of support is gonna come from not even
(36:19):
just the sports community, but the entire community, because I
think we all recognize that that's what sports teams mean
for specific communities, but even larger levels. When we send
Team USA to Japan or Brazil or whatever for the Olympics,
that's our team, and they come from all across the US,
(36:40):
sometimes not even the continuous US, you know. So I
absolutely am not surprised. I think it's appropriate, and I
think people do need to understand that sports is not
just about the statistics. There are personal sports stories, reasons
why you root for someone that have nothing to do
with their actual ability. Maybe they you know, for example,
(37:02):
the women's gymnastics team, Simone Biles was gone for a
stretch for her mental health. Sonny Lee had a kidney
disorder that had her sidelined until the beginning of twenty
twenty four before she could even train. So it's like,
even if she's not winning a medal, which she did,
(37:25):
I'm still like, I'm rooting for this woman because I'm like,
she had to go through so much to compete in
this sport that she loves.
Speaker 3 (37:32):
I think the thing about the Gaudreaux situation is that
in these days where athletes are presented a lot of
times as being simply only worried about money, and Okay,
that's fine, I get it. I mean, as we've joked before, me,
who the heck isn't right, I mean, yeah, listen, just
(37:53):
where we're at right now. I forget who had the
line in the song they say money isn't everything, but
the next line is try and live without it. So
but at the same point, I think it's important, and
you touched on a very good point about like high
school football and high school these small especially when you
think about the communities to our north. The folks in
(38:15):
Cold Water were dealing with something here this season. Some
other smaller communities have had similar things where a student
athletes unfortunately been injured in some sort of an accident
or an illness has taken away a member of the
community that has been so important to the team. And
sports can be a rallying point and a rallying cry.
(38:36):
I mean to take it to a completely different level,
but if you think back to nine to eleven, one
of the first questions asked within the following days were
when we go back to playing games? Yeah, because it
it is so much a part of who we are
(38:56):
and it helps us deal in a lot of ways
one hundred with tragedies and things and and and as
we mentioned with Dave Metsol the other day, Uh, not
trying not to be crass or take it to that
level already, but training camp starts in a couple of days.
They're gonna have to get back on the ice, and
(39:17):
as difficult as that is going to be, that's coming up.
And so that just that's why I think last night
was was important for a lot of reasons, to allow fans, players,
front office to get out there and just mourn together
and just let let this, let this happen and just
understand where we're at. And I think that's why last
(39:39):
night was so important. And again I had a great
turnout last night. And it's the feeling of sadness is
going to be there for quite some time. And it is.
Speaker 4 (39:50):
It's so sad. Thirty year old guys, so young, talented.
It's it's a loss. It's just a lot.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
It's just might not be any better way of summing
it up than than just simply that three forty seven
the press boxes, we continue, Reds were winners today. We'll
give you a recap of what Cincinnati did and how
the Reds have pretty much handled the Houston Astros over
the years. It's remarkable. It's the press box Fox Sports
nine eighty w ol name.
Speaker 1 (40:40):
Get on the press box called Marty. Now at nine
to three, seven by three, one, six, one, seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WN eighty
three fifty one.
Speaker 3 (40:54):
As we continue along here the press box Fox Sports
nine eighty w o ay have Marty banners. But we're
glad you're with us here on this Thursday afternoon. As
we continue along the NFL season, the clock continues to
count down eight to twenty will be kickoff tonight in
Kansas City as the Chiefs take on the Baltimore Ravens.
That's the focus of one of our fan polls we
have up for you this afternoon, and again just keeping
(41:14):
it very easy for you today, asking you in one
of our polls, who wins tonight's game in Kansas City?
Ravens are Chiefs. Right now, seventy three percent going with
the Kansas City Chiefs of Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid
and that Kelsey guy at tight end. And as I
joke in you said yesterday, my sixteen year old daughter
Taylor Swift team in the city. That's the way she
(41:36):
referred to them when we were talking about it yesterday.
So also today we're asking you can a week one
loss or win in the NFL set the tone in
a season? And right now sixty seven percent of you say, well,
the season is just simply too long to set a
tone this early on. I think you can. You can
look at it in different ways. I think some teams
(42:00):
it doesn't set a tone, but it just shows you
what you have to do when you get into a hole.
I mean again, just go down. I seventy five that's
a prime example of it, despite all the talent and
all the things that are a part of that franchise.
One to nine in the season's first two games. You
(42:20):
just can't keep doing that. Even though they have done it,
but you just can't keep doing it. It's just it's
amazing that they've even been able to battle back. But
we'll see if that's a concern this year with the
favorable schedule right out of the shoot. A couple of
responses to that poll, our friend Jim de Belt, I
was a little concerned after Kansas City lost to Detroit
(42:41):
an opening night last year, but we all saw how
the season ended. Well, yeah, absolutely, Chiefs amount of won
the Super Bowl the news says me personally, I think
you can get a little bump of confidence if you
win week one rather than if you lose Week one.
It's a very long season and you can rebound and
learn from your mistakes, So I think there's something if
you think back a couple of years. Remember I'm sure
(43:04):
Browns fans hate to think back to coach was it
Farmer who had the one year and that was the
Johnny that was the first year of when they were
on the cover, when they were on the cover of
Sports Illustrated with Odell Beckham, and everyone thought that that
was the return, that they were going to march to
the Super Bowl that year, and that was the year
(43:28):
where well the wheels fell off completely and they got
demolished in that opening game by Tennessee and that seemed
to set a negative tone for that season because they
never really recover from that. I know, there were a
lot of a lot of issues that that team. I mean,
it wasn't as good as everybody thought it was for
(43:50):
one thing, but it was just it was just a nightmare?
Was that twenty nineteen nineteen? Yeah, that that that happened,
and that was a pretty good indicator of of what
week one kind of showed you a lot right there. Again,
as I said that that team wasn't as good as
everybody thought it was, but yeah it does nineteen. Yeah,
(44:14):
do you have the who was the what was the
coach's name of that team in twenty nineteen? It was
only there he was He was the offensive coordinator in
the year Kitchen, Freddy Kitchens. Freddy Kitchens. He was the
offensive coordinator of the year before, and they elevated him
to a head coach and that lasted all over year.
So but so again, but I think there are certainly
(44:36):
different ways you can you can go about it and
look at it whether it means anything or not. Again,
seasons are all obviously obviously very very long, very long, very.
Speaker 4 (44:44):
Long, hard to know. I mean, if you look at
the teams that win the most, first win the game
the most, the first game the most. That was hard
to say whin the first game the most. They're often
not the same teams that win the Super Bowl at
the end of the year. It's those they actually don't correlate.
Speaker 3 (45:05):
What was a few what year was it a couple
of years ago the Steelers won their first eleven games,
and I think everybody realized they're not that good. Yeah,
I mean, they're not that good.
Speaker 4 (45:14):
It was like the Eagles last year. You know, they
go ten and oh and then that was it.
Speaker 3 (45:20):
Yeah, you can kind of tell they were playing with
the house money, well the house money at that point.
So all right, Reds were winners today knocked off Houston,
and a really interesting stat was posted by the folks
at Ballet Sports. In their last nine matchups against Houston,
the Reds are nine and oh in the last seventy
(45:41):
games with Houston. The Reds are fifty one and nineteen
in their last twenty five series with the Astros, the
Reds have won twenty of them.
Speaker 4 (45:50):
Yep, and the Astros stay in the postseason. The Astros
go to the World Series. The Astro cheat. They cheat,
Oh they cheat, yeah, ye yeah. I didn't say how
they get there, but they get there, and the Reds
just have their number.
Speaker 3 (46:05):
It's remarkable that they've been able to just to handle
them like that. I think I've referenced this before on
the show, but I think it was the seventy five
or seventy six d I think it might have been
the seventy five Reds, the team that went one hundred
and eight and fifty four and won the World Series.
Back in those days, you play your division rivals eighteen times,
(46:25):
and San Diego was awful. It might have been a
seventy six. I can't remember one, but I think they
either split or held the season series against the Reds.
One of the years.
Speaker 4 (46:35):
Wow, well, I think the San Diego was seventy five
Reds went one, eight and fifty four fifty four, right,
and then the seventy six Reds went one, two, two
and sixty right.
Speaker 3 (46:47):
But there there was one team I think it might
have been San Diego that won the season series against
them and ended up losing like ninety five ninety seven
games during the season. So again, you just some of
these things, you just kind of scratch your your your
and wonder how does this happen when those type of things.
That's right at the top of the list. We haven't
done our daily Chicago White Sox update for you. Going
(47:11):
into play last night at one hundred at thirty one
and one hundred and nine, baseball's worst team as they
strive to set the worst record in baseball history. There's
still a legitimate chance that they're going to do that
this year. Last night, though, they darn it, they won.
They snapped their twelve game losing streak. So they're now
thirty two and one hundred and nine going into action, Yeah,
(47:36):
going into action. Do they play. They're off today, which
I'm sure is a blessing for whatever White Sox fans
are out there. Our friend Matt McCoy over and over
in Columbus about the only one I think that I
that I know, I mean.
Speaker 4 (47:47):
They exist there. They're certainly not outing themselves right now,
but would you no, no, no, no, no, like I've
never I've never heard of this baseball you speak of.
Speaker 3 (47:58):
I don't know that. That's right. They are only forty
eight and a half games behind the Guardians in the
American League Central.
Speaker 4 (48:06):
Right there in it, right there in it, in.
Speaker 3 (48:08):
A crisp seventy seven games under five hundred. Well yesterday
it was seventy eight. So see, we'll moving up, climbing
the hill. And the win yesterday was their fifth since
the All Star Break. Fifth count with me one, two, three, four, five, five.
Speaker 4 (48:27):
It's so bad, it's so bad.
Speaker 3 (48:31):
Oh wow, thirty two and one hundred and nine. Everybody
else in the American League Central is either at or
north of five hundred. Tigers are seventy and seventy, Kansas
City four and a half and back of the Guardians,
Minnesota four and back of the Guardians. All right, top
of the hour. Coming up next hour, our friend Jim Demotropt,
the head football coach over at Springfield Catholic Central, will
(48:51):
visit with us. We'll hear from Andy Reid as he
gets the Chiefs ready for the Ravens tonight and the
opener of the National Football League season. The Fresh Box
continues Fox Sports Night eight e w.
Speaker 1 (49:00):
In Welcome to the press Box with Marty Banister, the
(49:38):
latest on all local sports from Wright State to the
Dayton Flyers, from the Reds and Buckeyes to the Bengals
and Browns. Called Marty now at nine three seven by
three one six, one seven zero the press Box on
Fox Sports nine eighty w O E H.
Speaker 7 (49:58):
Yeah, I would say that's true. You know, we'll see
what ends up happening.
Speaker 3 (50:02):
But whatever happens, we're prepared for it. Bengals quarterback Joe
burrow an maybe he'll play. If he doesn't, we'll be
we'll be ready for it. Talking about Jamar Chase and
his contract situation as it continues to be something that
is just well. Has him back in practice right now,
so that's a good thing. Welcome back to the press Box,
(50:23):
Flax Sports nine ad W and A. I'm already Banister,
Kelly bees to producer of the program, and you have
us for another hour or so. Talking a little high
school football coming up a little bit later on in
the program with a head coach Jim Dematrot from over
at Catholic Central High School over in Springfield. Interesting story,
A very limited number of available bodies, and yet they've
raced out at two to zero one of the big
(50:44):
games last week. And you saw this around the state
in a number of areas because the humidity and the heat.
Remember the last Friday Night it was in the nineties
when games kicked off, so many were pushed back an
hour at kicktime. Sydney beat Stebbens last Friday night sixty
seven to fifty five. There were eighteen touchdowns in the game,
(51:06):
six sixty seven to fifty five. Stevens scored three touchdowns
in the fourth quarter to kind of get it back
somewhat respectable. But I heard it number well, sure, I
heard a number of coaches say that some of the
reasons that that happened. For example, Pickering in Central came
over and beat Wayne forty five to forty. Central was
(51:28):
up in that game big in the fourth quarter, but
the heat and the humidity just started to sap some
of the enthusiasm and the other things that you needed
to finish out a game like that. So a lot
of these games ended up being a little bit closer
than they looked like they were going to be. That
(51:48):
was one of them. Pickering to North School in the
Columbus Area beat Grandland out of Michigan fifty three to
fifty one on a last second field goal. And again
that was one of those games where it just that
the conditions last week were not the best in the
world to try to slog your way through a high
(52:12):
school football game. And that's why I get a lot
of or pushed back to eight o'clock. But it's amazing
how fast a week can change, how that weather can change.
It's almost ideal conditions on tap for tomorrow. It's going
to be in the what low eighties, I think with
a low humidity at least will be survivable and comfortable.
But yeah, yeah, that was pretty remarkable. We said, I
(52:34):
can think about it. Sixty seven or eighteen touchdowns in
the game, the Sydney Stevens game.
Speaker 4 (52:38):
These are those are unreal numbers. I mean, I can't
I can't even hate because if it was that hot,
I'm not putting those pads on in the first place.
So the fact that they went out there so much
respect to them. But wow, I mean they were in
that they were up and down the field, up and
down the field.
Speaker 3 (52:58):
And what is and what is very interesting is that
Sydney team which scored sixty seven last week. They played
Xenia tomorrow night and through two games, Zenias allowed one touchdown.
Speaker 4 (53:10):
Well kind of an interesting, Uh that look interesting to
see how that shakes out.
Speaker 3 (53:16):
Yeah, so one team goes from scoring sixty seven to
now taking out a team that's allowed seven in two
games in two games. So yeah, it's but those those things.
You see those things all over college college athletics or
high school high school athletics, especially in those type of
conditions that everyone kind of dealt with last week. So
Reds were winners earlier today as they knocked off the
(53:38):
Houston Astros one to nothing in Cincinnati. Reds with the victory,
the Guardians are off today. The resume play tomorrow night
at home as we close in on the postseason. The Guardians,
after having Kansas City tie them in the American League
Central Razing just a couple of weeks back, I have
now pushed the lead back to a very not comfortable,
(54:02):
but a much better feeling four games right now, with
Kansas City four and a half in back as we
head towards the Major League Baseball postseason. We had Scott
doctor ran on a little bit earlier from the athletic,
and we were talking college football with him, and we
kind of laughingly referred to Iowa scoring forty points last
week and after having just six at the intermission and
(54:26):
kind of went went to the Big Ten as a whole,
going seventeen and one. We had this poll up for
you yesterday. Did I tell you anything about the Big Ten?
And Scott seemed to think that it did that it
did kind of give you a little bit of an
idea of maybe just how good the league is. The
two that stand out without a doubt, the Michigan win
(54:47):
over Fresno State thirty to ten and the Oregon win
beating Idaho twenty four to fourteen. Both of those games
are ones where if you're a fan of either one
of those teams, and I wonder how much of a
leash the Michigan fans will have with this team, knowing
(55:09):
the amount of talent that's gone, but knowing that their
defense is fully capable of keeping them in every game
they play. And as we saw Saturday night, Keller, they
scored points, Yeah, did their defense. So they know if
that defense can do what it has at least shown
early on that it can do, and it's got its
(55:30):
hands full of Saturday. With Texas, They're going to have
a chance to win just about every game that they're in,
but they do have a just a crunching schedule this year.
Speaker 4 (55:41):
It's a hard schedule. I'm I'm still for me. The
the jury is still out on Michigan. They didn't look
as ready for the game as I guess I expected
them to, especially because they know, I mean, Sharon Moore
knows there's a lot of pressure on him, not because
(56:02):
like they are expecting him to be Harbaugh at all,
but because it's still Michigan and there are expectations in
a program like that. So I'm I'm not sure. I mean,
Texas is one hundred percent the test. If the defense
can be the defense that we saw, yeah, I think
they stay in games, but if they move the ball
(56:23):
like that they're not there. They might score some points,
but it won't be enough to beat a team like Texas.
Speaker 3 (56:31):
Yeah, I don't know. I'm I'm still kind of out.
I'm not ready to kind of write off Michigan just yet.
I'm just not. With a national championship in your hip pocket,
that means something trying to find your way back and
(56:53):
you still have that as a part of who you are,
and that does mean something. I mean, it really does.
It's a big thing to have in your hip pocket.
And whether they can kind of parlay that into what
is ahead for them right now, we'll see. But there's
no question they got some work to do because it's
a very very challenging schedule that they play the rest
(57:15):
of the way. We mentioned Derek Jeter is going to
be there on Saturday for the opening game for the
or the second game of the season, and that's the
other thing too about their schedule. You look at their schedule,
they leave the state of Michigan once I think it
is until the middle of October or something like that,
so they have a very favorable schedule, so they have
(57:36):
enough time to kind of build themselves back to where
they think that they can be. But again, they've got
some tough hurdles to clear before they get to Columbus
on November the thirtieth, which and the other point that's
got document made as well too, which I think is
again one worth kind of revisiting. We're all excited that
(57:59):
football is here, but let's let's let's enjoy each week now,
because before we know what it's going to be in
of November, and yeah, playoffs and bowls and things like that.
But it's the clock ticks and it ticks. It seemed
like it goes so fast. It goes so fast, so fast. Yeah,
it's remarkable. Yeah, how it seems like it just flies by.
(58:22):
And uh and we're right, the right. And this Friday
night's week three of the high school season. I know,
week three.
Speaker 4 (58:30):
Yeah, and you were right about Michigan. The first time
they leave Michigan is to go to Washington on October fifth.
Speaker 3 (58:38):
Again, I was right again.
Speaker 4 (58:40):
I know, I'm gonna I'm gonna delete that one from
the podcast. We're not, but yeah, it's it. Michigan I
think absolutely has an uphill battle. I'm looking at this
schedule again. Some teams on here. Oregon's on here, Michigan State,
(59:00):
that's always a contest. Minnesota they didn't get the memo
game one, but we don't know the bounce back. USC's
on here, Washington is on here. Texas next week, I
mean Indiana.
Speaker 3 (59:14):
Yeah, it's yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 4 (59:16):
They're gonna be there. They're gonna be playing for their
lives almost every week. There's there's kind of not a
week off.
Speaker 3 (59:25):
That's the other thing that I again, and I've said
this before, I don't like I don't like non divisions.
I think you should have divisions, and not that an
Indiana would have any chance even if the Big Ten
had stayed with divisions. They weren't going to win the East.
I mean, we know that. But you look up now,
(59:45):
and you just look it up at seven schools six Indiana,
You're gonna look up at fifteen. Yeah, orse sixteen. I
mean Perdue was the preseason No. Number eighteen choice in
the number eighteen choice in the Big Ten. As I said,
the Big Ten standings look like a CVS receipt when
you when you print it out, it's just so darn long.
(01:00:08):
But yeah, and I mean that's the reason I don't
like the divisions. I mean, I'm I like divisions. It
did away with things like that, but I think that's
the truer way of determining your champion. You win the East,
you win the West, and the Big Ten is set
up perfectly for an East West split.
Speaker 4 (01:00:25):
It's I mean, now, it is. It's more than perfect.
It feels like going away from divisions once you've added
the literal west coast feels absurd to now do this,
but it's set up so perfect that's why it won't happen. Also,
you've suggested it, so now it's definitely on the never list,
uh for the Big Ten. But yeah, it's it's just
(01:00:48):
kind of goofy because and we've talked about this, the
possibilities for rematches, the possibilities for now you're now a
committee or whoever is going to have to deter herman
schedule strength in this more specific way than we've done
previously because now it's in conference and it's just, I mean,
(01:01:10):
what are we gonna do here? It's I think it's
gonna get messy and schools are gonna complain at the
end of the season. There's gonna be some thoughts, some feelings.
Speaker 3 (01:01:20):
Absolutely absolutely, I don't forget. Dragons Baseball comes your way
tonight as they close out the regular season and the
playoffs start on Tuesday, a day or ballpark. We're gonna
take the program over to day on Tuesday to help
you get ready for postseason action. As Dayton Dragons Baseball
qualifies for the Midwesting Playoffs, first time since twenty seventeen
(01:01:42):
that they have made it to the playoffs. So congratulations
to everyone in the Dragons organization, especially our good friend
Tom Nichols, who has been doing a great job calling
Dayton Dragons games for many, many years. So we will well,
I'm almost certain we'll have Tom visit with us for
a couple of minutes next Tuesday as well too, and
some other indivi juels also will stop my as well
to we continue along a little high school football conversation
(01:02:04):
when we continue the press box Fox Sports nine eighty WNA.
Speaker 1 (01:02:22):
Get on the press box called Marty now at nine
to three seven by three, one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine eighty WNA, and.
Speaker 3 (01:02:35):
Welcome back to the show here on this Thursday afternoon,
as we roll along with you right up until five o'clock.
It is the press box. It is Fox Sports nine
eighty w and A N I am Marty Bann, I'm Sta.
We're glad you're with us here this afternoon as we
talk sports as you let's talk a little high school
football visiting with us right now. The live line has
his football team off to a two and oh start
after wins over Bradford and then a home win last
(01:02:56):
week over Troy Christian. Jim Dematroff, how in the heck
are you? My fran? Congratulations on the start of t.
Speaker 5 (01:03:01):
And oh, thank you, mister Bannister. I appreciate that. Glad
to talk to you. Hey, I forget, I just wanted
to congratulate you on your new gig as the head
football analysis of the Ohio Bob University Bobcast. Congratulations.
Speaker 3 (01:03:19):
I appreciate that. And I appreciate you using mister Banister
as well too.
Speaker 5 (01:03:24):
I'm trying to show some respect.
Speaker 3 (01:03:28):
As you always said, respect your elder. So that's and
I appreciate that. I appreciate that. Jim. Your football team's
out of the gate at two and oh, and everybody
knows what kind of want to start what an early
part of a season can be. Give me some positive
What do you like about your club at Catholic Center
through the first couple of games.
Speaker 5 (01:03:47):
Well, what I like about this football team is we
are a junior laden team played with a lot of
sophomores last year, and this season they have appeared to
mature a little bit and grown up. I think that
so far in two games we've had some offensive success.
We've averaged about three hundred yards a game. About thirty
(01:04:09):
five points a game given up defensively only giving up
six points on the season and about ninety yards per game.
Last week, the defense did a now standing job held
Troy Christian the negative twenty yards and that's hard to do.
And then in the special teams department, we've blocked three
(01:04:29):
punts on the season, one for returned it for a
touchdown against Bradford two weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (01:04:36):
Jim, one of the things that is an issue and
you know this, and you knew it when you took
the job at Catholic Central. You knew numbers were not
going to be in your favor as far as the
amount of bodies you're going to have each and every
day to practice and play games with. How is that
for you right now? How are you navigating your way
through that? Right now?
Speaker 5 (01:04:55):
I'll tell you right now, we've got twenty one players
on the team. I had hoped that we were going
to have twenty five. We had twenty five come out
to the meeting that we had back in April, so
that was my goal. Four of them decided not to play,
so we're at twenty one. So anytime that you got
small numbers, one of the key things for us is
(01:05:16):
going to be avoiding injury. So we've been lucky so far.
Last year and this year we really avoided some major injuries.
I hope that that continues to be the case. And
along with that, you know, when you've got small numbers,
you've got to really change the way that you look
at things, especially your practice schedule during the week. We've
(01:05:37):
cut back on time. Obviously, we don't do hardly any
banging or contact in practice and that's been beneficial to us.
Speaker 3 (01:05:47):
How has that helped because you would think from the
people who maybe are not in depth into football gym,
we would think, well, maybe that doesn't help you, But
when you have the number of issues that you have,
what does that do for you easing back on the contact.
Speaker 5 (01:06:02):
Well, I think what it does is that it saves
the kids' bodies throughout the week and we have to
do a lot more mental preparation then we have to
do physical preparation. So that's been one of the keys
to you know, why we've been successful here the last
several years. We've just really kind of cut back on
the number of physicality and reps that you would get
(01:06:24):
during the week and just turn that into more mental
things that have to be done on the field.
Speaker 3 (01:06:29):
He's the head football coach at Catholic Central High School
over in Springfield. Our friend Jim Dematroll visiting with us
here in the press box, has his Irish out of
the gate at two and OHO. They have a big
game with Northeastern coming up on Friday night. The Jets
are at one on one right now. Members of the
Ohio Heritage Conference. Jim, talk to me about that in
that league. What is obviously year in the year out.
(01:06:50):
That league has very talented football programs. But give me
a kind of a run through for your division and
how good is the OHC this year?
Speaker 5 (01:06:58):
Well, I think I think the OAC is probably the
second best small school league in the state of Ohio.
I think, you know, you've got to put the back
up there just based on the results that they have
here in and year out. But the Ohieds Conference is
a great football conference small schools. I think that the
South Division which we're in, I think that runs through Greenville.
(01:07:21):
I think that they have an outstanding team. They have
a lot of kids on the football team, they have
some depth, have a real good coach and Ryan Haynes,
and they have a great coaching staff down there, got
a real good quarterback, running backslash, you know, down there,
and they're just doing a great job. So I think
it runs through Greenville.
Speaker 3 (01:07:41):
Are the other schools in your division? The OHC Gym
and CRITY if I'm a organist. But it is split
by enrollment, is it not? Or is it split by geography?
Speaker 5 (01:07:49):
It's pretty much split by enrollment. Some of the smaller
schools will be in the south and your larger schools
will be in the north, with the exception of green
And you know, Green's pretty good high school and getting bigger.
You know, they're building a lot of homes out there
in the green And area. So you know, maybe one
of these days those divisions numbers, those teams will switch
based on their numbers.
Speaker 3 (01:08:11):
Sure. Sure, when when your kids walk onto the field, Jim,
and you look across the field and there are let's
say fifty kids standing on the other side of the sideline,
fifty or sixty kids from another team, what have you
done during the week to kind of tell them, don't
worry about that, let's just go play our game.
Speaker 5 (01:08:29):
Yeah. I think that's the key, Marty. I think one
of the things that we talk about all the time
is obviously we want to be able to line up
to different formations and things that different teams do. But
our main goal every week is to really take care
of ourselves. You know, are we going to be able
to execute offensively what we need to do? You know,
(01:08:49):
we talk about five things on defense. We talk about alignment,
your stands, your keys, your initial movement, and then we
want we want gang tackling. We want to get people
to the football. You know, last year and the season opener,
we had sixteen kids on the team. We had three
kids that were hurt, so we ended up dressing thirteen
kids from the ballgame against Cincinnati North College Hill, they
(01:09:11):
had forty five kids and they had some athletes in
that forty five kids as well, and you know we
beat them twenty one to six. We gave up a
deep pass in the second half. Theoretically, you know, if
we had executed a little bit better, we probably could
have put thirty five points up. But I think, you know,
on a week to week basis, you know we're going
(01:09:32):
to be we're going to be out numbered. We're not
going to have the numbers that the other teams have,
but we're going to have to base on the heart
of the kids, the mindset of the kids, what they've
what they've been coached up to do. And I think
one of the things that we have on our side
is we have an outstanding tradition here at Catholic Central, right,
and we're going to fight, We're going to compete with
(01:09:52):
with every team that we play on the Friday night.
Speaker 3 (01:09:55):
I was going to bring that up because for those
who don't know, I mean, this is a program that
has played for state championships in the past. It's made
deep runs into the postseason. So this is not as
if this program just started a couple of weeks ago.
I mean, you've had the programs had some successful seasons,
and you're right, Jim, That does help, doesn't it. To
know you can look back and say, here's what the
team in twenty zero five did, Here's what the ninety
(01:10:17):
seven team did. It means a lots of those kids,
doesn't it exactly?
Speaker 5 (01:10:21):
You know, you know, and it goes back to that
word tradition. You know, there's a tradition here at Catholic Central,
regardless of what the numbers, regardless of who you're up
against and what the opponent you know brings to you
every week. You know, the expectation is you're going to
compete and you're not going to quit. And I don't
think that myself and my coaching staff allows that to happen.
(01:10:42):
And I'm not trying to say that in an arrogant sense,
because I think every football team across America is stating
the same thing. But if there's a special tradition here
that the kids are really going.
Speaker 3 (01:10:53):
To fight, absolutely almost with Jim Demetrof, the head football
coach at Catholic Central High School over in spring Feel
the Irish are a Division seven school and as he
mentioned it open ago, twenty one bodies on the team
and they're out of the gate at two and zero,
having won their first two games over Bradford, Detroit Christian.
They have Northeastern coming up on Friday night. Jim, I
you have a deep background in coaching. You've been at
(01:11:14):
a number of places where I mean, let's face it,
you've had more. You've been at Upper Arlington, you were
at Springfield North, You've been around You've coached at other
locations where you've had the things that I mean, certainly
from a number standpoint that a Catholic Central doesn't have.
How has that helped you to get this team ready
for what it has to do every Friday?
Speaker 5 (01:11:34):
Well, I think, you know, one of the great things
that I've had the experience to be in a lot
of different places and all were very good sound programs.
I mean, you know, we want to stay tied on
Division one fifteen and oh year two thousand and we
were we were blessed with a lot of great athletes.
But one of the things that's really been helpful to
myself personally is I've had the opportunity to work with
(01:11:56):
a lot of great coaches and work side by side
with them, pick their brains on different things, and you know,
you get a lot of different perspectives. You know, one
coach may want to, you know, have more banging and
contact during the week, and then another coach may not
want to do so. Daryl Mayne I coached with the
(01:12:17):
Upper Islington. You know, him and I were very very close.
I was the offensive coordinator there, he was the head coach,
and one of the things I learned from him was
about special teams play and I've kind of really taken
that the heart this year is that you can actually
win with special teams as opposed to not trying to lose.
(01:12:38):
And I think that's a positive thing that we brought
to the.
Speaker 3 (01:12:41):
You know, to the football team this season, absolutely out
of the gated two and oh the Springfield Catholic Central
Irish Jimmy. Always a pleasure catching up with you, my friend.
I'm happy for your start right now. Hopefully it can
continue throughout the season. It was good talking to you,
and best of luck, and I'm sure we'll we'll talk
again as the season rolls along.
Speaker 5 (01:12:57):
Well, I appreciate you having me on and you know,
you and I go way back to our three on
three days playing some basketball here in Springfield. You know,
we used to dominate the court with your boys, Scoby
and Richard Quizzenberry.
Speaker 3 (01:13:11):
So that's right, that's right, And and that's the one
thing I'll say about you as we wrap this up.
But you may have your team, may may run the
ball out, but you sure heck don't pass it at all,
because I remember that from basketball. I never saw the
ball once it went to you.
Speaker 5 (01:13:28):
That's not true. I led that league and assist.
Speaker 3 (01:13:34):
You probably did because all I was throwing to Scoby
that you knew it wasn't coming back. Jim, always a pleasure,
got thanks for joining. They always get.
Speaker 5 (01:13:42):
Talking to you, all right, Take care of Marty, Good
luck Jim.
Speaker 3 (01:13:45):
Jim Dematroff, the head football coach at Catholic Central Irish,
are two and zero on the season. Those are some
intense three on three games. I can tell you that
that league we were in played at uh played at
at a church over in spring. But those are pretty
intense games. They were fun too. They were a lot
of fun, all right. So let's move with a long
three four thirty's the tip will continue the press box
with you here. We'll read you right up until five
(01:14:06):
o'clock here on this wednes Thursday. It is Thursday, Yes,
it is Thursday afternoon the press box Fox Sports nine
eighty w. Get on the.
Speaker 1 (01:15:07):
Press box called Marty now at nine to three seven
by three one six, one seven zero the press box
on Fox Sports nine eighty w O.
Speaker 3 (01:15:18):
N four point thirty four as we can tune long
in the press box Fox Sports nine eighty W O
and E Marty Banister Kelly be the producer of the
programmer with you right up until five o'clock. And thanks
again to Jim Dematrot for visiting with us the hip
football coach over a Catholic curary, wondering why we focus
on maybe one coach. Obviously, Jim and I have a
relationship that goes back along long time. But at the
same time, it's still a pretty good story. You got
twenty one kids on your team, you're two and zero
(01:15:40):
out of the gate. You won a game last year
with sixteen kids.
Speaker 4 (01:15:43):
It's so impress.
Speaker 3 (01:15:45):
It is, it really is. And as he said, you
think about it, and that school does have a rather
long tradition of success in football, and you go back
through the years and it's yeah. To do it with
the numbers, to deal with the numbers that they're doing
it with, it's pretty darn impressive.
Speaker 4 (01:16:04):
I also like, I really like what he said about
special teams and using it as something to help you
win instead of prevent you from losing. I feel like
anytime you start playing to not lose, that's when you lose.
You got to play to win. Once you start playing
to not lose to prevent a loss, that's when you lose.
Speaker 3 (01:16:25):
That's when you lose. That's when you lose. And he's
a he's a very good football coach, not a very
good passer, but a very good football.
Speaker 4 (01:16:32):
Yeah, he switched to football after after I'm sure he
showed him up on the basketball court.
Speaker 3 (01:16:37):
Yeah that was. That was about forty pounds ago. Okay,
let's uh uh. But yeah, I think he's doing a
great job over over in Springfield and know all the
best to to Jimmy, and we appreciate him spending spending
time with he He was the coach during some of
those you know, we talk about rivalries that are now gone,
(01:16:57):
and one of those was the Springfield North Springfield South
rivalry when the two schools were in existence back in
the day. I started in radio in Springfield in nineteen
ninety two and called every one of those games until
two thousand and five. I think, yeah, that was my
last year in spring with two thousand and five. But
those games every year had a different level of intensity,
(01:17:23):
and at times they were nasty. I mean, I'm not
going to sugarcoated. They got nasty at times. I mean
there were a couple of times. Back to Chris Wallace
who went on to play at Toledo, D Miller, who
played at Ohio State. We've had d on this program
before talking about his days at Ohio State and he
played in those games. When he went to Springfield South,
the basketball games were at a different level between the
(01:17:46):
two schools, at an entirely different level because of the
immense amount of talent that resided on both ends of
the city. Those games were just something to beholden. Had
so much fun. Jim Demotrov mentioned Jim Scoby, he and
I called those games for so many years, those North
South games and just what they were like if you
(01:18:07):
weren't there. I mean, there was one year they brought
back Randy Aers, they brought back Craig Taylor who played
at Springfield North. Randy Airs played at North at the
Henderson Gymnasium, and it was just just a phenomenal time.
And those are some heck, some very entertaining games. It
was so much fun to be a part of all that.
(01:18:27):
And goodness ee, Jim was having some success at Catholic
Central Reds were winners today beating the Houston Astros one
to nothing. So Cincinnati with the Wing Guardians are off today.
We'll have Dragons baseball for you tonight as they hit
the final weeks or final days of the regular season.
The playoffs. Kelly are on Tuesday at Day Air Ballpark,
(01:18:49):
and we're going to take the show over there on
Tuesday to get you ready for the playoffs. And we'll
have some folks and the Dragons join us during the
show on Tuesday from Day air Ballpark.
Speaker 4 (01:19:00):
Be a good show.
Speaker 3 (01:19:02):
Well, not any different than any other one.
Speaker 4 (01:19:05):
Yeah, but it's it's you know, it's like got a
little pizzazz on it because you're gonna be.
Speaker 3 (01:19:08):
At the ballpark in pizzazz.
Speaker 4 (01:19:10):
Yeah, pozazz, absolutely, and I think everything could use just
a touch more pizzaz.
Speaker 3 (01:19:15):
Personally, I don't know about that. Bottom of the third
out in Oakland, Seattle leads the Athletics three to one.
Bottom of the third in San Francisco, the Diamondbacks lead
San Francisco to nothing. Mentioned the Reds winning today one nothing.
Minnesota has defeated Tampa for to three. In about four hours,
(01:19:36):
the NFL season starts the defending Super Bowl champions. The
two time two defending Super Bowl champions are the Kansas
City Chiefs, and as they got ready to face the Ravens,
their head coach Andy Reid gave a brief update on
how his team is looking heading into tonight's season opener.
Speaker 2 (01:19:53):
Before the Chilen's playing the Ravens. Good football team. We
know that a good week of practice, guys ready to
go o at that time?
Speaker 6 (01:20:00):
Jers.
Speaker 7 (01:20:01):
Yeah, did you historically think you have a feel for
what the team's gonna be?
Speaker 5 (01:20:05):
Be like in the opener that go'll play well and.
Speaker 2 (01:20:08):
If you have a fuel, I go in saying we're
gonna play well. That's how that's my That's how I
go into every game.
Speaker 7 (01:20:19):
But no different here.
Speaker 5 (01:20:22):
More so than it is probably obviously that an opener,
is it the most lack of better term is.
Speaker 7 (01:20:27):
Serious where you just somebody unknowns and go from there. Yeah,
I'm curious to see you know what we've got. I
mean that's always.
Speaker 2 (01:20:38):
I think that's probably with every player, every coach, every fan,
ever immediate person. Curious to see what you have and
and how you how you handle everything. But that's the
best part about it. We'll see how we go it goes.
Speaker 6 (01:20:51):
Can you share a.
Speaker 8 (01:20:51):
Little bit of just the conversation and with Clyde about
the decision to put him on NFI and where he's.
Speaker 7 (01:20:58):
At right now?
Speaker 2 (01:20:59):
Yeah, well, you know, Clyde talk to y'all so you
understand I'm gonna keep what we talked about private, but.
Speaker 7 (01:21:07):
We're looking out for you.
Speaker 2 (01:21:09):
Know, obviously what's best for him and that's uh right now,
that's the most important thing.
Speaker 8 (01:21:15):
We talked to coach Tobe a little bit yesterday about
you know, it's still this kickoff rule and maybe you
got to see some things in preseason you don't really
know until this game with just what are you expecting
teams to try to do in this and it is it?
Speaker 3 (01:21:30):
Is it fun to be the first ones out there
to kind of joke for everybody.
Speaker 7 (01:21:33):
Yeah, well, we'll see see what it goes.
Speaker 2 (01:21:35):
I'm I'm not sure what to anticipate or expect, so
but we'll see see how it all works out. You
got two uh good special teams going against each other.
Plus John's got a ton of experience there, so we'll
just see how our roles brand My name absolutely, Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:21:51):
Great memory, coach.
Speaker 4 (01:21:53):
Let's get to it.
Speaker 8 (01:21:55):
I'm in town covering this game. Football seasons here. Where
do I get some good food? I have a couple
of days where some good.
Speaker 7 (01:22:04):
Listen.
Speaker 2 (01:22:04):
If I say one, then the others will kick me
out there. You can't pick a bat spot, but after
this I'll give you one.
Speaker 7 (01:22:10):
I didn't know you were a politician. Yeah, when it
comes to food, I am.
Speaker 8 (01:22:16):
Real question coach, legendary career, legendary run here on KC.
Speaker 3 (01:22:22):
How do you feel?
Speaker 7 (01:22:22):
How many more years do you have? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:22:26):
I signed a five year deal, so we'll see how
all that goes. I'm getting older, though, Brendan, you know that.
Speaker 3 (01:22:36):
Andy Reid, Yeah, we all are and all getting older,
but always a very engaging guy. The head coach of
the Kansas City Chiefs, and I think, as we said before,
this to me will be a very interesting year to
watch the Chiefs because, again, it is one of the
(01:22:57):
things that we've talked about number of times on the program,
the amount of games this franchise is played. You can't
continue to go deep, deep, deep into seasons like this
and come out of it fresh. I mean, the the
off seasons aren't seemingly so much shorter these years are
these days now. But as long as you've gotten number
(01:23:19):
fifteen behind center, your chances are better than anybody else's
because there's no question he is the difference maker on
any game. What wasn't an exhibition game he threw a
pass behind his back that was completed.
Speaker 4 (01:23:31):
Yeah, I mean, come on, it was very impressive.
Speaker 3 (01:23:34):
I mean, come on, it's just it's just silly. And
but he's the difference and until I mean, the only
guy who's really had the upper hand down name is
Joe Burrow. Take that for what it is. It does matter,
it does, it matters. But the Chiefs as a whole, though,
(01:23:56):
have the unique ability to find these those other pieces
to stick in there and we replenish a lot of
the guys, as we talked about, have played a lot
of football over the years, but it's been a remarkable run.
And if they do it this year, they'll be the
first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls.
We've had back to back winners before, no one's done three.
Speaker 4 (01:24:16):
Yeah, this would be epic. I mean really, I think
after this, if this happens, people talk about Tom Brady
versus Pat Mahomes and this, you know, can Pat catch Tom?
Speaker 3 (01:24:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:24:30):
I think that's catching Tom, I really do. I mean,
nothing is seven Super Bowls, but three in a row
is never been done before.
Speaker 3 (01:24:38):
Yeah, and that and take a moment. And again, as
as you know, being the fan of the team, I'm
a fan of we. We would love to see them
in that run this year. We would be the ones
to do it. But I think that this is a
time where you really kind of have to sit back
and look at a guy like Mahomes and just think
(01:25:01):
how revolutionary he's been to the game. The style, the play,
the way he plays the game. It's influenced just about
every level.
Speaker 4 (01:25:07):
Yeah, i mean we're seeing coaches, coaches, we're seeing qbs
come into the league now and it's so clear that
they have been studying Patrick Mahomes. I mean, Caleb Williams. Yeah,
we're seeing all the time these little these side arm throws.
It's like, Caleb Williams, you didn't play baseball, Like, where
did you get that from? You got that from Patrick Mahomes.
(01:25:27):
So it's I mean, his impact it's I mean it's everywhere.
Speaker 3 (01:25:32):
Yeah, it's it's it's up and down the league. It
really is. Because they're they're they're the whatever your team
you want to compare to them as far as I mean,
are they the Patriots, Are they the Steelers of the
seventies and eighties or the forty nine ers or the nineties,
Well yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:25:48):
Yeah, I mean they're they're the gold standard of football
right now.
Speaker 3 (01:25:52):
They are, and until somebody figures a way to knock
them off. Correct, He's going to be that way for while.
It's going to be that way for a while, all right,
for forty five at a time. We'll let me come back.
We'll put a wrap on the program of nature and
how our fan polls turned out this afternoon, get you
a baseball update for you as well to and get
you ready for Monday or for Monday night. Look, Thursday
(01:26:15):
Night football, Monday Night football as well too, because we're
gonna be stuck with the Jets on Monday night. We'll
do it.
Speaker 4 (01:26:21):
It's annoying because we could have avoided all of this
if Aaron had just stayed healthy last season, we could
have gotten this out of our system. And now here
we are running it back with the Jets every primetime game.
Speaker 3 (01:26:32):
Oh my god. Or or he would have gone somewhere else.
Speaker 4 (01:26:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:26:35):
The press box Fox Sports, I at wa.
Speaker 1 (01:27:01):
Get on the press box called Marty now had nine
to three seven by three one six, one seven zero
the press box on Fox Sports nine to eighty WN
four forty nine.
Speaker 3 (01:27:15):
We roll along with you here on this Thursday afternoon,
the NFL season three and a half hours away from
kicking off. Baltimore and Kansas City. Both of our fan
polls have gone final today, we thought we would ask
you today fairly easy question going into tonight's game, who
wins Kansas City or Baltimore? And the Chiefs seventy eight
percent of the vote, twenty one percent going towards the
(01:27:37):
Baltimore Ravens. I thought the Ravens, Kelly would get a
little more love than me too. I really did shut
I'm shut. Yeah, I thought again, I thought they'd get
a little bit more. And I think you compare it
to last year's game with Detroit. A lot of people
weren't sure what Detroit was last year, and they went
in and I think kind of we talked about statement
(01:27:57):
games earlier, they kind of made little statement last year
by winning in Kansas City. Well was it twenty one
to twenty or something like that, So that certainly kind
of propelled them to the type of season they went
on to have.
Speaker 4 (01:28:14):
It's interesting because for this specific matchup, if the Chiefs
win right now, I think it's like them saying they're dominant,
they're showing their dominance. If the Ravens win, I I mean,
and I'm sure you can't think about it like this.
If you're the team. But if you guys meet again
(01:28:35):
in say the AFC Championship Game or something like that,
I don't want that Week one loss looming for the
Kansas City Chiefs as like a payback situation. So I
for me, I'm just like, I hope that these games,
you know, are more tune ups than like statements for
(01:28:56):
both of these teams.
Speaker 3 (01:28:57):
The one thing I think, and I don't know that
this will happen, but if one of these two teams
just runs away and hides tonight and just throws it
on the other one, that's gonna be a thing where
the rest of the league as gonna go. If it's
Kansas City, if they go out and hammer Baltimore tonight,
the rest of the league is really gonna take note of.
Speaker 4 (01:29:17):
That absolutely, because Baltimore is supposed to be about their
defense exactly.
Speaker 3 (01:29:21):
And if Baltimore does that, and again, as I said,
I don't think that's going to happen. I think this
is probably going to be a twenty four to twenty
thirty one night thirty one to twenty eight type of game.
I don't see it being a route for either one
of these teams. But if it is, the one that
is doing the routing. The rest of the of the
(01:29:42):
football world's going to go, oh, oh, wait a minute,
we may have to rethink who we think are going
to be the one. I mean, and if it's Kansas City,
then the rest of league's oh no, here we go again.
Now we canna forget a way to be we.
Speaker 4 (01:29:54):
I'm actually not sure because Kansas City can do what
kind of whatever they want. They just have to get
to postseason.
Speaker 3 (01:30:01):
They But I think I think you've said my point though,
because I think I think a lot of people are
thinking kind of the way we have thought that maybe
it's start, maybe the wheel, maybe some of the treads
starting to wear a little thin on the les. But
like I said, if they go out there and just
pummel Baltimore, then I think the Lamar Jackson questions are
going to come up again because the knock is he
(01:30:23):
can't get him over the hump. Yeah, And so I again,
I know this too. This is still September. We're not
We're not to January by any stretch yet. But hey, again,
I still think that will generate a lot of feeling
one way or the other as to how this game
(01:30:43):
plays itself out tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:30:45):
Yeah, I think you're right.
Speaker 3 (01:30:46):
I think you're right.
Speaker 4 (01:30:47):
And listen, there are some fan bases like the Commanders,
like I said, we're already buying our tickets to New Orleans. Okay,
we're ready to go. We're so I think that everyone
does need to just pump them a little bit and
and kind of no matter how this game shakes out,
we do have to remind ourselves. And it's just week one,
(01:31:07):
and it's a long season, and they're trying to add games.
Speaker 3 (01:31:11):
Oh yeah, yeah, and they probably will too. Our other
fan poll kind of along the topic we were referring
to here and talking about can a week one loss
or win set the tone in a season for an
NFL team and the pole goes final sixty two and
a half percent of you say, probably not a fair
way to look at it, because the season is simply
too long or so long.
Speaker 4 (01:31:31):
I guess you just you got to shake the rust off.
There are some teams, I mean, we've seen the Bengals
never get off to a good start, and that doesn't
necessarily affect well, I mean, it will affect their season,
especially last season when you go down two against the division,
but it doesn't necessarily mean, we're not the team we
(01:31:52):
think we are. You do want to make a statement though,
you want to not be run over in game one.
Speaker 3 (01:31:58):
No, you don't want to come out of right, You
don't want to come out of tonight going that will
all that work we did in the offseason, all the
things we we practiced, all the things that we thought
about and figured we would be good at, Well, that's
all been flushed down the kimo. Yeah, we came up
and gave about forty eight points tonight. That's I mean,
that's a part of it too. Where you gonna go.
Speaker 4 (01:32:18):
Yeah, because you don't want to have to go back
to the drawing board. You might tweak. These are things
we could do better, these are things we need to
improve on. But if you have your coaches being like, well,
that's that's not it, that that's you can't that's hard
to come back from, we.
Speaker 3 (01:32:34):
Better go back and rethink that. Yeah, sixty percent with
the season is too long. Eighteen percent say it kind
of depends on the opponent whether or not you feel again, Baltimore,
Kansas City tonight. If this were Kansas City and Carolina,
oh sure then or Washington, then you could kind of go, well,
(01:32:54):
I see.
Speaker 4 (01:32:54):
How you threw that in there. You like, yeah, I
see how you threw that in there.
Speaker 3 (01:32:59):
So but that that that's kind of where I think
I kind of lean towards the season being too long,
and it is because I mean, as we all know,
seventeen games has probably won too many, should probably have
stayed at sixteen. But it'll be eighteen next year. So
and we'll get our first real good luck tonight at
the new kickoff rule. Yeah, it really is, like because
(01:33:22):
the exhibition games gave you something, but now you've got
guys who have made teams. You're going to have your
best people back there, your best special teams people returning kicks.
And also, I'm sure we will get our first full
look at it, Tony.
Speaker 4 (01:33:35):
Also, I'm sure that teams did not show their hand
in the preseason with how they've been, you know, scheming
this up. I'm sure that tonight we will see. We'll
see what these special teams coaches have been working on
this offseason, because it's gonna be it's interesting. The kickoff
(01:33:57):
is interesting. It is it is if it doesn't necessarily
work out. This has been an interesting experiment.
Speaker 3 (01:34:03):
For sure, and I think it's I think it's here
to stay.
Speaker 4 (01:34:07):
Though I don't disagree it's safe.
Speaker 3 (01:34:09):
I don't see the change. After the Bengals practice today,
T Higgins was limited in practice today as listed with
a hamstring Jamar Chase and this is funny, listed as rest.
He hasn't practiced rest. After practice, though, t Higgins told
(01:34:30):
Caleb No from one of the TV stations in Cincinnati,
no one should worry, he said, quote, I feel amazing. Okay,
just a precautionary move there, but again, T Higgins feels
like he's ready to go Jamar Chase.
Speaker 4 (01:34:46):
Resting.
Speaker 3 (01:34:47):
Wait a minute, Adam, this is a This is not
Adam Schefter. This is a fake account. I was about
to say, well, I think we've got some news here,
but it's it's not. It's a site called Adam got It,
got It smoothing Adam Scheff. So yeah, so so just
ignore that. If you see it online, it has no
(01:35:07):
validity whatsoever. So there you have that. Let's see. Other
than that, that is much what has gone on today again.
Baseball Reds were winners today, beating the Houston Astros one
to nothing to wrap up that series. The Guardians are off.
The Dragons are in action tonight we'll have it for
you six thirty five and seven o five. The Great
(01:35:29):
Lakes Loons are the opponents, as the Dragons will wrap
up regular season playing that head towards the postseason next
week and again Tuesday will be with you from a
day or ballpark tomorrow. On this program, we'll do our
usual weekly recap. Will also get you ready for high

High School in Springfield, for joining us. We appreciate him
(01:36:12):
visiting with us today Again. Red's win today won nothing
and the NFL season starts in three hours and twenty
seven minutes.
Speaker 4 (01:36:21):
Did you hear that? Taylor Swift is apparently drawing up
football plays with Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 3 (01:36:29):
For the majority of football fans in America, I sum
it up this way.
Speaker 4 (01:36:34):
Yeah, the news is wild today.
Speaker 3 (01:36:37):
I've enjoy the game that I will talk about it tomorrow.
And there's a game tomorrow night too, Philadelphia Green Bay
