Speaker 1 (00:10):
What about Sports Talk ninet ninety five Randy Kennedy in
the Threaded Faster studio. It is High School Media Day's
twenty twenty five. Every team in Mobile County in the
studios today and tomorrow, including the Saint Paul Saints. Really
good team. A lot of veteran leadership on this team.
Let's let's talk to one of their star players, one
of the big star players in the country, Tank Jones
(00:33):
from Saint Paul's Tank.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Hey you do man, I'm doing gut all right?
Speaker 1 (00:36):
So Tank? Do you go by Tank? And like, if
you sign your school papers, do you put Tank or
is it Anthony?
Speaker 2 (00:42):
I'll put Anthony. But like some teachers call me Tank
and the staff and stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
So when did you When did you become Tank? When
did that first happen?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Thing? When I was like three years old something like that.
My dad named me that when I was real young,
So I was like just breaking stuff.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
I was big, big and slow for real three years old.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
I'm like wow, and.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
So that it just sort of just sort of stuck, right.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
I think the first time I ever heard your name,
I heard, oh, just got Tank Jones. You know all
his name is Anthony. So you think when you go
through college, are you telling him like I'm tank or
you think it's Anthony.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
I don't really know because my dad, I'm a junior,
so yeah, my dad began kind of ending on putting
Bama name and stuff, so they be playing Tankers when
middle name, so he get kind of offended.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
I got the perfect response, whe you that is your fault,
that did it. He's the one that did it. So
when we talk about recruiting, it's not even an exaggeration.
I think you are the number one uncommitted player in
the entire country. You're the last guy left in terms
of like the true five star, blue chip, really absolute
(01:46):
top of the top guys. Was that was that a plan?
I mean, are you sort of surprised that most of
all these guys that you know from around the state
and around the country are already settled and you're kind
of the guy out there still waiting to announce where
you're going to go.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Well, I'm kind of not surprised. I feel like some
guys probably will flip during the season, so I don't
really know, but I'm not surprised for real.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
So that's not you. No, you've been you've been sort
of hard set on being like I'm gonna commit once and.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yes, I just make it right. Yeah, just making the
right choice.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
All right, So let's talk about it. Tell me you're
telling the teams that are still in the running.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Alabama takes an organ, so let's.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Talk about those. Are they more similar or they're more different?
Just tell me what distinguishes each one of those three teams.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
I probably just a like distance and just like different
coaches with different coaches, Probably that relasionship.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
What do you think about the fact distance wise, So
Alabama that's you know, about as close as you can
be home, state school all that. Oregon is about as
far as you can possibly go, and TAXA A and
M is not around here either, but you know, not
as far as Oregon is. Have you always thought about, hey,
I wouldn't mind going that far away or it's playing
close to home. Would that be a factor for you?
Speaker 2 (02:57):
I feel like that's a it's a factor from me.
But I feel like I can also go somewhere far
and just make a name for myself and just so
I can make my name like Develope and stuff like that.
So I feel like that'd be good.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Also, so when you visited the organ Most people listening
to us certainly have never visited Oregon football. How's it
different out there?
Speaker 2 (03:15):
I'd probably say it's not as humid it's down here,
but like it's cold air and stuff like that. It's windy,
it rains a lot, and it just a lot of
green grass and stuff like that. Trees, a lot of
a lot of trees, like a lot of lumber and
stuff like that. But it's pretty out there. It's beautiful, Yeah,
mountains and stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
When you visit Oregon. How much is Nike a deal?
I mean, is that like a big factor? Is it everywhere?
Or is it? Is it not that big a deal
that their kind of or they're kind of Nike University.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
I feel like he's pretty big there because like if
Oregon wasn't there, it'd just be like trees and stuff.
But like Nike is everywhere around there and everybody just
wearing it and stuff.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
Yeah, that is definitely a big deal. Do you know
you get to know name offered from Parker High School
who went there? Obviously the number one guy in the
state last year went.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
To you know him? Yeah, sir?
Speaker 1 (04:02):
You friends with him? Is he recruiting you, how does
that go?
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Oh? We cool, but like I don't want to kill
him with that much. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Yeah, Like he hasn't even played a game yet. He's
just he was in last year's class, so he hasn't
even really gone through it yet out there. But that
was certainly, you know, one of the top guys or
the top guy in the state last year. It was
going out there to order. Well about that Texas A
and m Uh, that's that's a that's a unique culture.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
The fan base, they're crazy, I know that. But like
the relationships I have with the coaches, I probably say
I had the lonely relationship with them because like that
staff hasn't changed yet and I just been building relationships
just like I think like two years ago. I feel
like that assistant gotten just the producer of defense a linement,
especially the first round. It is just a big part
for me.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Who at Texas A and m R. Do you feel
like you're close with.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Like players A coach Uh, you know coach Tanya Gerard Eddie,
coach Spence, and coach Malik Davis. I'm also cool with
coach Echo too. I talked to him a lot.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Are you close with any players there?
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Uh, some. We talked every once in a while.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Got the same thing at Orgon. Yeah, what about Alabama?
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Give me the give me the pitch for Alabama hometown?
Just really just staying home. The relationships I got to
the coaches also, I feel like the coach is there though,
I just started building relationship because there's the new staff.
But it's also been good because I knew Kane Walmax
since I was a freshman, so that was a big
deal for me. Also especially playing for him too.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
He's probably hoping you go to South Alabama back in
the day.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
I feel like he thought he wanted to be to
go Toabama if he was at South. Though.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
What about Christian Robinson, I've got to know him a
little bit. I know you know him better than I do.
But that's that's kind of been the lead guy for
your recruitment. Is that safe to say?
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Yeah, sir, he's a great guy. I know he's a
great fault the great man. He just wants the best
for me and I know he's gonna be there for
me every day, even on the worst days, all the
bad days.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Yeah, talk to you about just what's gonna go into
your final decision? How long you think we're gonna go
before we uh, before you make that one and only commitment.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
I probably say this week, connect week, just like talking
with my parents, talking with friends and coaches and stuff
like that, just making sure I'm just in the right
fit for me.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
I know your dad's been a really good influence Anthony.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Jones, Right, Yes, he's been a.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Really good influence. How much are your mom or your
dad have they been like given you their opinion or
are they more like, hey, they're all good choices. You
go where you want to go.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Yeah, they feel like they are good choices. They got
good relationship with the coaches and also so they all
think it's good choices. They just want me to just
go out there and do my thing.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
What about Saint Paul's this year?
Speaker 2 (06:35):
I feel good about us. I know we're young, but
like we've been getting the young guys at the pace,
so I feel like going to fall camp and the
leaks before the season, I feel like it's gonna be
great for us.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Break down for me in terms of your high school performance,
where do you think your percentage of snaps are gonna come? Offense? Defense? End, linebacker?
You know, kind of break it down of where you're
gonna play the most.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
I know.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Coach Bard's gonna try to get you involved as much
as Paul anyway you can.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Yeah, that's probably gonna be like the same last year,
like the n linebacker offense, stuff.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Like that, playing wildcat wildcat quarterback. Yeah, you definitely did
some of that.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Yeah, Asia, bat receivers all that.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Do you like it when they snap it to you?
Speaker 2 (07:17):
I love it. I've been doing this so young, so
it's just normal to me.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
I've seen you some as well, like you play in
or linebacker you like twenty five yards downfield covering the
past too.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Yeah, just don't want the coach tell me to do.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
How big are you now?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Six four? Like two sixty to sixty two?
Speaker 1 (07:35):
See, that's big to be downfield covering the past.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Have people talked to you about growing into maybe like
a hand in the dirt defensive lineman. Is that a
possibility or what?
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Well? They said, well, coaches saying like if it happens,
if it happens, because like just putting on the way,
eating good and stuff like that, it's it's just gonna happen.
Just how my body already built.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
Would you be happy with that?
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Yeah, I'll be fine with it. I feel like I'll
still move good at it too.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
With the were there three finalists Texas, A and M
Oregon in Alabama? Uh? The position they're wanting you to play?
Is there? Is there any different that they're talking to you?
How they would usually any different? Or are they all
basically the same thing?
Speaker 2 (08:10):
I think DOWNA Oregon are like four down fronts like
four through five, and Oregon's three four, So I'll just
be like an edge for Oregon.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Well, good stuff, man, it's been great following your career. Man,
it's been great follow in your career. And that that
opener is at UMSS you have one chance to be
a senior against ums. You know what about that as
an opener?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
I feel like it's gonna be great. I feel like
my last game first now, especially playing there's gonna be
good cause I love away games. Just coming in there.
Just again, a win would be great for us in
the community.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
All right, I'm gonna call you Anthony, all right, Anthony
Jones Junior. That's for dad.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
That's for dad.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
Most people say tank and we may slip into that sometimes,
but yeah, Anthony Jones from Saint Paul's the top uncommitted
prospect in the country. Certainly one of the absolute best
guys in the state of Alabama, has been for several
years now. It's gonna be great to watch his career flow. Anthony,
I appreciate you, man, Thank you. There you go. That
is the star of the Saint Paul Saints. Anthony Tank
