Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome back to Sports Talk ninety ninety five. Randy County
in the thread at Faster Studio and now joined here
in studio by John and Kevin Williams. And we're here
to talk about a little golf tournament coming up associated
with South Alabama and their dad. Let's talk about that. Kevin,
tell me about the golf tournament you got coming up.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
So this is the second annual how Williams Memorial Scholarship
Fund Tournament. It will be Friday, October the fourth. We're
going to try to make that an annual event, the
first Friday of October, whatever that date may be.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
We obviously don't want to battle.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Saturdays in the fall, but be the Friday, October the fourth,
twelve thirty shot gun at AAA City, four man scramble
one hundred dollars a player. We are working out details
now about beverages and food, but we we welcome anybody
that knew dad and loves golf to come on out.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Well, let's talk about your dad, how Williams, because that
is that's what it's all about. And I would say
that he could have been mister Mobile. I mean, if
we did us we put every the name of every
person in Mobile on a ballot and said, who's the
most popular person in Mobile? I think how Williams if
he wouldn't have won, he would have been on the
podium anyway.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
I would agree with that he and not always in
a good way. He was, But you're right, Randy, John,
and my brothers and I, my mother and I, we
we had no idea. We really had no idea his
impact on the city, not just the university, but just
the city it was. It's still pretty eye opening, even

(01:43):
a year and a half later.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
A year and a half since he passed away, as
such a big part of the city. John, You've probably
heard this before, but like when I first got to Mobile,
like I was at the Mitchell Center for a basketball game,
and I don't think I had ever met how Williams.
Then he came up and started talking to me, and
we were like friends, like before the night was over.
You know, he knew what I did for work, and
then he just started talking about that and we just

(02:06):
kind of went back and forth, and I just I
kind of felt like I was friends with him, but
also kind of felt like I was part of the
South Alabama community. After geting to hang out with him
for a little while.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Yeah, it's funny that you mentioned that, because people say
that it rubs off on us, and people tell me
that all the time, that, oh man, you just talk
to people like you're their best friend, just like you're dead.
And I think you're right. I think it made people
feel welcome. I think it made people feel like they belonged,
and I think it made people feel like they were
part of a community itself. And he had that impact
on I think everybody he met.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yep, and that was a big thing for him too.
I think I mentioned this. I tell anybody this, It
didn't matter to Dad if you were the president of
a visiting university or if you were the custodian cleaning
up the restrooms. He was gonna treat you just about
the same, with respect and like you were part of
his family. And that's just that's just who he was.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Was he associated with South Alabama for your whole life?
Did you guys grow up around that?

Speaker 3 (03:04):
So me, yes, Kevin's a little a little older than
I am. Wow, he's a little older than I am.
But so yeah, we can tell too, shot right there.
He has some memories before that. But but yeah, as
long as I've been as long as I've been here.
He was always a South Alabama guy.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Yeah, I think we came back to Mobile. He was
in that we were in Nashville. Me and the brother
between us were born in Nashville, and we came back
in eighty three, and I think he joined South in
eighty eight. So the first five or six years of
my life I don't remember much with South of more
McGill tooling. But since then, yeah, I mean for thirty

(03:43):
five years it's been South Alabama and Dad have been synonymous.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
We're gonna talk about this golf tournament. But officially, what
was his role at South Alabama if.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
I remember right of his official last role was the
Associate athletic director in charge of facilities and game operations.
That was his last role. But if you ask anybody
out there, I don't think he ever really had a
role that he didn't do, if that makes sense.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
And you guys have a really cool logo for your
golf tournament too, right.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Yep, yep. Dad was kind of known for his blue
sweater vest and red tie there in basketball games, and
we can't take credit for that. South Alabama came up
with that. Mark cues and doctor Urdman and those guys
actually came up with that, but they gave it to us.
We were using that for any kind of logos we do,
for any of the golfers, anything we do as a family.

(04:31):
We've tried to include that for everything. That's that's what
I mean, that's you know, that's what he was known for.
At all basketball games, we.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
See the logo just around sometimes doing like random places.
It's funny we go to a football game and then like,
oh man, look at that helmet there the sweater vest
is on it this week? How about that?

Speaker 2 (04:50):
And there was a think in Heroes West. I think
there's a poster or something up there and somebody had
stuck a sticker, one of the stickers on the poster
of a South of South Alabama basketball So it's it's
really cool to see that logo out and about.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
John's the what's the point of the tournament? What does
it benefit?

Speaker 3 (05:09):
So the point of the tournament is we're trying to
start a scholarship fun in my father's name, and we
want it to be for support personnel or somebody associated
with South Alabama athletics that maybe is an on full
scholarship or maybe isn't on scholarship at all, but needs
that support and just embodies what he represented it South

(05:29):
with servant leadership and those qualities. Somebody that loves South
Alabama and just needs some financial help.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
That's awesome. Kevin had to go a year ago.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
That was the first one, right, that was the first
one last year, and that it went really really well.
If if my memory is correct, I'd have to go
back and look at the paperwork and everything I've got.
We raised almost nine thousand dollars this year. We're hoping
to get over ten between sponsorships, whole sponsors, anybody that
wants to play. We had twenty seven teams last year.

(06:02):
My goal is thirty this year, and if we can
get to that number, I think we may be able
to actually give out a scholarship after Christmas this year.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
Nice people will sign up as a team or as
individual or both.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
We can do both. We prefer as a team if
you know you can get three other players to sign
you up as a team, but if certainly, if you're
an individual and you would just like to play, shoot
me an email or a text message and or call
me or call one of us and we will we'll
get you on the list. And I think we had
two or three guys last year that just showed up

(06:35):
as singles and we put them as a team and
they ended up playing. And if you need those numbers,
my cell phone number is two five to one seven
five three seven zero two six. I am a middle
school principal, so understand. Please if I don't respond right
away or something like that, there's a reason. But my
email address is address is Kay Williams two at mcpss

(06:56):
dot com. Either way is good. I will make sure
you're on the list and we appreciate any support anybody
can give us.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
What's your school? Causey middle that's a good school.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
It is.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
It's very good school, very good.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
Thanks to the principal.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Yeah, well, I'm just the assistant. The principal is a
great guy too.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
That's good. So I gotta ask you John. In addition
to golf, you're wearing You're Davidson hat. So you're associated
with the.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
Warriors, right, Yes, sir, Yes, sir, I'm the athletic director
of Davidson, nice.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
School, undefeated football team, undefeated. I want to know. It's
good to be one to know who'd y'all beat last week?

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Murphy. Panthers beat Murphy, and now you're off this week,
right off, this week, we got we got Baker next week.
Tall tasks one of the largest schools in the state.
But we're looking forward to it.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
Boy, Baker got off to a good start. They were
impressive against Theodore.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
They sure did, They sure did.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
They look great. Hey, but isn't it nice to have
that off week after you've won a game. Now you
get you get an extra week of being undefeated at
least one more week.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
Walk Tall for two weeks until you play another game.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
You trap it up again.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
That's all that mattered.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Don't get to trade paint for another week.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
That's good though, That's really good. Fun to go out there. Y'all.
Got a great school out there. I've been there a bunch.
You got a new stadium on campus.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
New stadium, fantastic students, great teachers, great administration. You can't
ask for a better place to go to high school
or to work. It's just it's awesome.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
All right, Kevin, give us the details again about the
golf tournament we're talking about here.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Friday, October the fourth, Haw Williams Memorial Scholarship Tournament, twelve
thirty shot gun at his A City golf course one
hundred dollars a player, four man scramble. We are taking it.
We got three levels of sponsorships. I can shoot out forms,
I can email, text anybody who needs it. Any way,
shape or form that anybody can help. We would greatly

(08:39):
appreciate it. Every dime after we have to pay the
few little expenses that we have, and I have to
give Colin mccern a plug here today. He's the pro
to a City. He played for my dad at South
Alabama and he has He really helped me last year
when I was kind of flying blind into this, and
he's really helping me out, helping our family out a
lot this year with ideas about how to raise money

(08:59):
and how to keep this thing going, keep interest in
this thing going. So if you are interested in playing,
or being a sponsor or donating time, money, resources, anything
you can that would help us benefit the scholarship that
can benefit a student at South Alabama, we would greatly
appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
And the date again.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Is October fourth, twelve thirty shot gun at Aaia City and.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
Tell people again slowly the email address where they can
sign up or get information.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
It is my work email address is Kay Williams two,
the number two at mcpss dot com. And then or
you can text two five to one seven five three
seven zero two six and we will get you signed
up and taken care of all.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
Right, there you go. You gots big golfers.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Yeah, and I've got some stories. And that's one of
the appeals of this tournament is we we kind of
threw it together last year and between John and myself
and my brothers and our friends and all the guys
he played with, we've got some interesting and funny photographs
of Dad, and we're gonna have him blown up and
set up around the course, so if nothing else, you're

(10:07):
gonna get to laugh at him one more time.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
So it's such a it's such a fun tournament, such
a good if you if you play golf, you really
need to play in it. Not only is it a
good cause, but and it's it's just so much fun
you'll have. You're gonna have a great time.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
Yeah, and your dad was an enthusiastic golfer too, right.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Oh, absolutely, I got him in trouble a bunch, but
don't tell my mama said that. But but yeah, he
he played, especially after he retired. He was probably played
four or five days a week. Yeah, And and that
was his second home he had. We used to affectionately
say he had a hammock in the locker room where
he'd sleep and get up and play the next morning.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
So there are there are thousands of people like me thinking, uh,
I didn't know he ever retired. Yeah. I mean every
time I went to South Alabama, there he was. He
was the same representative of the university, whether he was
on the payroll or not.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
Absolutely, he's still there in a lot of ways, still
there in a lot of ways.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
And and and I do have to give doctor Irmin
in South a shout out to They dedicated a bench
in his honor that's got of his his image or
his picture up. And they also named one of the
parking lots out there right outside the stadium after him.
So's his legacy is going to live on, and this
is just going to be a small part of what
he will carry on.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
Will try to great stuff. The tournament is going to
be on Friday, October fourth, twelve thirty shot guns start.
You can email Kay Williams two at mcpss dot com.
Yes there ago you want more information We'll talk about
it some more before we get there, but it's on
October fourth, so couldn't start making your plans. It should
be a great event and anything to honor your dad.

(11:42):
He's such a great guy, such a great representative of
South Alabama. We're happy to help out, so I hope
it's a big success.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Again, well, thank you, Rendy, We appreciate you having us on.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
