Speaker 1 (00:04):
Use that matters inside you can trust. This is the
Ryan Gorming Show.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Back now here on The Ryan Gorman Show and joining
us in studio, we have co host of The Pat
and Aaron Show on ninety five three w Dae, Aaron Jacobson.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
So Aaron, first of all, it's great to have you here.
It's great to be here and not going to say
in this year. Yeah, I'm not going to say Happy
New Year. It is past the statute limitations for that
three days. According to Larry David.
Speaker 4 (00:34):
You texted me yesterday it was the fourth said Happy
New Year.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
I was like what, Yeah, And you know I defended
myself saying, well, it's the third day after New Year's Day.
Speaker 5 (00:45):
But I think I think Larry David would say that
I was wrong to wish you were happy New Year.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
I wasn't going to debate it over time.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Now, you're right, You're right, You're right. I tried to
defend myself, but I didn't really have a defense. All right,
let's talk about the box. Speaking of not having a defense, uh,
thirty thousand foot view on what was a disappointing season.
Speaker 5 (01:04):
What happened?
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Inconsistent injuries, start hot, maybe a little fool's gold because
you kind of were skating by with those victories.
Speaker 5 (01:14):
Yeah really, yeah, they were close, just.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Getting by, getting by, and it caught up with them.
And then when you got more banged up, their offensive
line was playing musical chairs all season long. And for
football fans, you know, and if you're just kind of
a you know, a fringe football fan, we always say
it starts up front. Yeah, And when we say it
starts up front, it starts with that offensive line, it
starts with that defensive line. But when you're building an offense,
got to have the offensive line. They protect your quarterback,
(01:38):
they give them time, They open up the game for
the they open up space for the run game. They
were in flux all season long. And then Mike Evans
was hurt, Chris Godwin a lot of injuries, new offensive coordinator,
and Josh Grizzard who I thought had a poor year,
and Todd Bowles at the top. It just was lifeless.
It was lifeless all year long. At the end, especially
two and seven and their final nine that was horrible.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
I'll tell you what I think really doomed the Bucks season.
They were just one in four or they lost three
out of four after they wore the cream school jerseys.
I never liked seeing the Bucks in those creamsicles. I know,
people get real nostalgic. I don't know what four they
(02:19):
sucked when they were in the white norng they were
the Yucks. Yeah, exactly, So why everybody want to bring
those those uniforms back.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
Because they liked the look, and we like nostalgia.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
They lost three of their last four since they wore
those jerseys.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
We enjoy retro. I look at it more on the
football field of things that are happening as to why they're.
Speaker 5 (02:41):
A better way to do it.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Yeah, football games. Here's the fact they lost to all
three divisional opponents within the final five weeks of the season.
They lost to the Miami Dolphins after that.
Speaker 5 (02:53):
Yeah, that was a tough loss.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
And they put himself in a chance where they didn't
control their own destiny.
Speaker 5 (02:57):
Why didn't the offense perform better?
Speaker 2 (02:59):
You got Mike Evan, you got Chris godwhen you got Amikabuca,
You've got Bucky Irving. I mean, I know he was
out for the first part of the season, but still,
I mean that's a lot of weapons. And look, I
know they had some injuries, but my god, San Francisco
forty nine Ers have had more injuries at more key
positions than just about any team.
Speaker 5 (03:16):
They're in the playoffs. They did just fine.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
I think they weren't aggressive enough. And you saw last
year their offensive coordinator Liam Cohen was aggressive. He changed
the plan as the game went of on went on,
and he evolved and he adjusted to what he was
seeing out there.
Speaker 5 (03:29):
And on that point, you know, we've seen quite a
few times where the Bucks they have like a good
drive early and then they kind of stall out. It's
like they're not able to make the right adjustments, which
tells you the coaching isn't there. And that comes to
the big question, what do you do with Todd Bowles?
Speaker 4 (03:50):
I personally would let Todd Bowles go. Yeah, I would,
after being mediocre really throughout his entire tenure as the
head coach of this team. They've won divisions, but they
haven't done they won. The Panthers just won the division
yesterday at eight and nine. Okay, so that's how this
thing has gone. And they backed in, they lost the
game and they still got and then they won the
division title. They're going to get a home game. That's
(04:10):
how it's been going. For Todd Bowles, so I'm not
going to give him flowers for that. It fell off
the rails. You're the head coach of this team. At
some point your message gets lost, and I just I
personally wouldn't continue with him. From reports that I'm hearing
from some NFL reporters and from in the whispers of
the Bucks locker room, is he's staying no matter what
(04:31):
the buyout would be, as they're saying too hefty for
the Bucks to want to eat that money. I think
it's anywhere from nine to twelve million dollars, which for me,
we see college coaches get bought out for way more
than that. So I think for the NFL, do you
like a coach if there's somebody out there that you like,
and if the Glazers, the owners of this Buccaneers franchise,
like somebody, I don't think they're going to be scared
(04:51):
to make that move. But I don't think they're going
to make a move just to make it without having
a plan.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
We're joined by Aaron Jacobson from ninety five three WD eight.
The concern to me is I've never been a big
Todd Bowles fan.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
I think he's a good. He's been a good defensive coordinator.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Never really viewed him as a great head coach, although
I will say early in the season when the Bucks
were rolling, I was like, all right, maybe Todd Bowles
is onto something here.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
And by the way, that's how I felt the entire time.
Everything you said, yeah, I agree with.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
But if you look at what they've done the past
couple of years when they had the most success before
this disappointing season, you had Dave Canalis, head coach of
now Carolina going to the playoffs. Liam Cohen last year,
head coach of Jacksonville incredible turnaround there seems like he
was very reliant on his offensive coordinators. And I just
(05:42):
feel like in today's NFL, you got to have a
head coach who can make adjustments on the offensive side
of the ball, get yourself a good defensive coordinator, and
build that way as opposed to a defensive coordinator as
head coach. The defense wasn't really that great back and
then he really can't do much of anything on the
offense of the ball.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
You're right, And if for Todd Bowles's defense to perform well,
he needs to have the type of guys that he
needs to hit fit his scheme. He had young guys, rookies,
guys were getting injured. It just didn't fit. So he
had no pass rushers. He could not get after the quarterback,
and that was essential to a Todd Bowles defense offensive
side of the football. You're right, like he did. He
left it to them and that worked. Like last year,
(06:20):
Todd Bowles, Hey, I'm gonna handle the defense, Liam Cohen,
you handled the offense. What happens at the end of
the season. They make Liam Cohen the highest paid offensive
coordinator in all of football after one season. They saw it.
It's really hard for a guy like Todd Bowles who
just want all those divisions to go, Hey, you're fired.
We're elevating Liam Cohen from offensive corner to the head coach.
(06:41):
That's a tough decision to make.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
In twenty twenty. Hindsight, that would have been the right move,
no question about it. But yeah, at the time, there
weren't really many people saying to do that.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
Ask me now, I'm doing the deal all day. Ask
me at the time, No, it's not right. And what
the Jaguars did to steal Liam Cohen in the middle
of the night, come in and pluck him from his
bed and take him over to Jacksonville without letting him
talk to the Bucks. It was really shady and sketchy.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
Out went down.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
Worked out, Yeah, it worked out for him, But for
the Bucks, it's like they didn't see that coming. So
Baker mayfield another year with a new offensive coordinator. You're
not always gonna hit on the on the right guy.
Liam Cohen was better than Dave Canalis. Dave Canallis. The
offense was okay when he was running the Bucks offense
Liam Cohen, it was hitting. Baker had the best year
of his career. It really revived his career that year
(07:25):
under Liam Cohen last.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
Year, So it's good coach.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Yeah, it's a good coach. And look, jackson went from
having thirteen losses last year having thirteen wins this year
and they won a division title.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
All right.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
