Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, it is day thirty one of the federal government shutdown.
The Republicans have been blaming the Democrats. The Democrats have
been countering blaming the Republicans. Snap benefits look to be
suspended in most states tomorrow, paychecks for air traffic controllers.
We know all that. Bringing in our GOP strategist Pete

(00:21):
Getarelli right now. And Pete, what I'm seeing is a
possible little bit of cautious optimism. And I'm looking at
the quote from Senate Majority Leader John Thune who said
yesterday that talks among the rank and file senators have
ticked up significantly. Do you see any reason for any
optimism at this point.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Only because Reid it's been thirty one days and they
have to do something. What is definitely clear is nobody
sure who's going to get blamed the most for the shutdowns.
The Democrats took this approach that they felt if the
government was shut down and the Republicans that have all
brains this is a power, that they'll automatically be blamed
for it, and that the president will take a hit.

(01:04):
Ironically enough, the president is not falling in the polls
due to the shutdown. However, with that set. The GOP
is about a forty five percent negative on it, while
the Democrats are about a thirty five negative on it,
which means who is blaming who. That's not good for
the Republicans going into the midterm elections. They need to
be positive to hold on both the House and the Senate.

(01:28):
So right now there is optimism because both sides need
to know it has to be it has to be settled.
The Democrat problem that they had is the only excuse
that you've heard from high profile Democrats is that the
shutdown gives them leverage to beat up the Republicans. Chris
Coons of Delaware called the shutdown an unpleasant tool to use.

(01:50):
Bernie Sanders called it, you know, you open the government
and we lose our leverage. And then Chuck Schumer, the
Democrat leader, came right out and said every day the
government is shut down, it gets better for them. As
those comments really become more mainstream, it hurts the Democrats.
With that said, you pointed out tomorrow snap with head Start,
these are all programs that affect families and children that

(02:13):
can be impacted starting tomorrow. You mentioned or the News
mentioned that ACA renewals premiums are going to be seen
to be rising right now if this is not settled.
So there's a big issue here. It's got to get resolved.
Are there four or five more common sense Democrats out
there in the Senate? I think there are, and I
think the optimism is warranted because again, unsurety on both

(02:37):
sides of who's really going to be blamed. So it's
got to get resolved.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Who do you think is going to end up having
to fold on what they want? Do you think that
Republicans are going to have to make some of those
changes that the Democrats want about the healthcare issues? Or
do you think that the Democrats are just going to
have to push through what they want to push through
and then worry about that stuff later.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Great question, Dana. If the Republicans can get the point
across that the Democrats have voted for these clean continuing
resolutions thirteen times previously. This is nothing different than what
they've already voted on. So the Republicans are saying, there's
nothing left to negotiate. We've given you all we can.
But the Republicans have said, and the President has said,

(03:20):
they can talk about health care, they can pull it
out and have that conversation. So they do need to
get that settled. But right now, the Democrats are in
a tough spot because they are voting against something they
have consistently voted for. And again going back to those
statements that the shutdown is good politically for the Democrats

(03:41):
doesn't vote well for them. So I do think you
will have some three or four more common sense Democrats
rise to the top and just say we've got to
end this.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
We're talking to GOP strategist Pete Getarelli, and one thing
that stands out to me, and I'm sure it stands
out to a lot of people, is that the Democrats
are holding all this up, not letting, you know, things
move forward because of the healthcare subsidies and all of that,
because they're concerned about the working people who can't afford healthcare.
In the meantime, the shutdown is causing single moms who

(04:10):
are dependent on snap benefits to feed their kids from
getting those benefits. It just seems super hypocritical, and now
it's starting to almost like backfire on them. But the
people affected, do they understand that enough to know who
to put the blame on?

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Right there, Dana, people, this is such a complex issue.
There are so many people who don't understand that. What
they will understand, exactly to your point, is that they
don't receive those checks and those benefits come tomorrow and
they get notices of high premium increases. That's what they understand. You.
This simplified it very well.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Turning now to an issue that I know is near
and dear to your heart, peat and that is the
New York City mayoral race, which is coming to a conclusion.
And the latest Fox News poll that I saw this
morning finds that Andrew Cuomo is kind of creeping up
a little bit on Zora and Mom, is there a possibility?

(05:03):
Is it too late for Andrew Cuomo? Does he have
a chance or does mom DOMI have this thing locked up?

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Read? What an interesting choice of words, not only for Halloween,
but for Andrew Cuomo creeping up on somebody.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Yeah, don't forget. I know as well as you do.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
You got it. So, if we had another few weeks
left in this election, Cuomo would probably be able to
catch Mandami in this because the more he is being
exposed outside of his TikTok and social media fame that
is capturing all of his support with a lot of
folks who just don't understand his policy proposals are so unreasonable.

(05:43):
Cuomo has to try and sew this gap. But it's
so difficult for him because you got a guy out there,
and Andrew Cuomo e pit of me of a silver
spoon kid when he criticizes Mandami for never having a
job in his life. Andrew Cuomo probably would have never
had a legitimate job in his life, but it hadn't
been for his father in his political connections. It's such
a tough case to make. I think he does end

(06:05):
up falling short. And you know I wrote it off
at a few weeks ago that said God helped me
that I'm actually rooting for Andrew Como in some way,
shape or form. But you know, by the grace of
gotten some miracle that they split the vote up so
much and then Curtis Lee what can come and go
get some votes. But you know that's that's a very
unlikely scenario as well the Mandami. And I'm gonna tell

(06:27):
you this, if Mandami gets elected, people are just expecting
him this to be good for the Republicans because they'll
be so bad. But if Mandami gets in as New
York City mayor. What I think he will do. He
will be tempered to some degree for a handful of
months so that Governor Kathy Hockel's reelection efforts are not
going to be harmed, because if Mandami jumps in full

(06:50):
throated with all of his left wing, unrealistic policies for
free everything for everybody, it will just backfire on the
gubernatorial ticket of Kathy Hochel. What is really bad for
New York Mandamie gets in, and then if Kavioakle gets
re elected governor, you're gonna watch Mndamie then kick all
of these four left policies in. And the biggest fear

(07:10):
in New York is that they will start taxing upstate
New York because they're gonna find way. They're going to
realize New York City cannot pay for all of these
proposals that Mandamni has proposed for New York City, So
what will they do. They're going to try and figure
out a way to tie in some programs to the
rest of the part of the state and tax all
of New York for what's going to be an absolute

(07:33):
failure in a Mandanie New York City mayoral administration.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
Just what Upstate New York needs are more taxes? All right?
Doop strategist Pete get Arelly Pete. Always a pleasure to
have you on board.
