Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's get to today's top stories with Chris Trenkman. Good morning, Chris,
Good morning. So.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
A man was arrested after a shooting near the westbound
exit of the Selman Expressway in downtown Tampa during the
morning commute on Wednesday. It happened off the exit to
Kennedy from the Sealman, and investigators found that the driver,
who was identified as twenty nine year old Kevin Ariola,
was driving erratically along the exit ramp and actually hit
(00:25):
several vehicles. He got out of his car and was
armed with a gun and started shooting, and he struck
a nearby red Chrysler three hundred. So deputies at the
nearby Hillsboro County Courthouse, which is located right downtown, heard
the shots and they responded to the scene. They were
able to get to the suspect, fire their tasers and
(00:47):
then took him into custody. So, this red sedan that
was near the scene had several bullet holes in the windshield.
It was I'll bust it out, and the driver who
left the incident said that she was shaken up but
fortunately thankful to be alive considering this guy's shooting bullets
and there's people all over the area. I mean, it's
(01:07):
rush hour in downtown Tampa.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Right exactly. This was a big breaking story, like right
after we got off the air yesterday.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
It was right at the end of the show when
it all started happening, and I was seeing because I'm
in some of the like Hillsborough County Police scanner groups
and stuff like that, and I was starting to see it.
And then people thought that it was a school because
the school administration.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Building is yeah. Yeah, So there were a lot of
questions as to what was really going on. There are
questions that it was a road rage thought. Yeah, I mean,
so we don't know why this person got out and
shot up that car. Yeah, And it doesn't appear that
it was actually road rage because there was no conflict
with somebody else. It just appeared that this guy had
a lot of rage exactly, but it wasn't necessarily directed
(01:47):
at anyone specific, so it's not exactly clear.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
But after it was over with, he was pretty beat up.
If you see his mug shot, you know, he's got
like a black eye and cuts and everything. But the
good news is that despite him firing off those shots,
nobody was shot and he was able to be taken
into custody by the quick thinking of deputies nearby who
heard the gunshots because they're there guarding the courthouse for
an account.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Incident towards them. Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
So fortunately he is now in jail and facing serious
attempt at first degree murder charges. A captain with the
Hillsborough Sheriff's Office was fired in another incident of academic
cheating at Sheriff Chad Cronister's operation. The Sheriff's Office confirmed
that Captain Zulie Sterned Stearns, a twenty five year veteran
(02:32):
of the force, was terminated because of an ongoing internal investigation,
and that's already resulted in several top officials resigning. Stearns
was the commander of the Communications Bureau and Records Division,
and this is related to a guy who is believed
to have helped out several of these top deputies do
(02:52):
things like coursework, special classes that they take, projects, and
other academic related issues that they're supposed to be able
to do themselves. Yeah, they found some nerd to do
all the work for them. Yeah, and that's what he
was doing. And now they're all in big trouble. Over
it and this person lost a twenty five year career.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, is it really worth it?
Speaker 1 (03:15):
I mean, why don't you just do the work? Yeah?
I mean, you know, when we have these courses that
we have to take here at iHeartRadio, we sit through that,
and I was.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Wondering if that's what it's like, is just like these
boring trainings that you got to do every year and
it's the same video every time. They just having somebody
sit there, click next and like answer the little quiz
questions for them. Or is this something that's a little
bit more.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
These are NHR classes. Yeah, it sounds like these are
tougher courses. Are is the questions and the answers never change,
So it's it's time consuming, but it's pretty easy. You
don't need to hire an outside now.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
In this case, the guy's name is Robert Rausch, and
he is out of state and used to live in
the area. But apparently he's under investigation for you know,
writing things.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Like essays or you know, tracket going.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yeah, and exactly why he's needed in this case is
one of the big questions. I mean, why is the
sheriff bringing in people who can't do the work that
they're supposed to if they're going to be at that level.
And I think one of the reasons why some of
these guys take these classes, like the former deputy chief
and that and people like that, is that when they
take these classes with the FBI or fdl E, it
(04:30):
trains them to be deputies at a higher level.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Yeah, leadership.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Yeah, they want to get a promotion, right right.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
I wonder if it's if it's less that they can't
do it, more that this person just started offering his services.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Yeah, one person. One person did it and got away
with it, and then they were like, yeah, I don't
feel like taking this course, let me.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Have him do it for me. Yeah. I bet that's
part of what's going on. But bad luck for the
Hillsboro Unicy Sheriff's office. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
But at in the meantime, though, still no criminal charges
filed and no consequence is for the sheriff himself. Environmental
groups from across the US are urging Panellis County to
reconsider it's long running waste to energy program. The facility,
which is located next to the county landfill in Panelis Park,
has been in operation for forty years. It processes the
(05:17):
majority of the county's trash. So Mike you All, the
founder of the Energy Justice Network, visited the site this
week and he said that the waste burning plants and
the cluster that's located in that area between Penelis and
also the two in Hillsboro is the most concentrated in
the nation. And you combine the output of those facilities
(05:38):
and they're putting all kinds of what he says are toxic.
It's toxic ash that gets into the atmosphere. And he
said seventy tons go up in the smoke stack of
that facility, and it's so concentrated that you know, people
living nearby could suffer from health issues like asthma or
cancer or heart attacks.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Well wrong, I know, I was gonna say. I lived
really close by. I drive by this every morning on
my way to work and every morning on my way
home with my windows open every time, of course, so
you know, I'm breeding it in and I have. I
have not felt well. I've been feeling a little off.
So I wonder if it has to do with this
toxic ass. Maybe you close the windows and put the
(06:20):
air on. Researching, Yeah, I mean in my apartment, I
always have the windows are always open, the doors open
the sun. Yeah, right, exactly. I had no idea this
was a problem. Now. County officials said that they did
like two hundred and forty million dollars in safety upgrades.
But I don't know. Again, I have definitely felt off.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
I smell a lawsuit.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Yeah, for the last couple of years since I moved
to this located. When I lived in Carrollwood, I felt fine,
all of a sudden, never had a problem yet downhill.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yeah, well it doesn't sound good, does it. This group
says that for every hundred tons that's burned, thirty tons
of it turns into toxic gas.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
Yeah. That's a lot of toxic gas. Yeah it is,
And there's probably ton of it in my apartment right now.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
So maybe we'll see if they make a change to that.
But they pointed out to what happened in Miami Dade County.
The facility was so old it caught fire. Yeah, and
they had to close schools because of all the burning
trash that they couldn't put out.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
I gotta agree to reach out to Ben Crump. I
don't know there's a civil rights issue there. Definitely, my
rights have been violated.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
That's right, you know by the ash So Highland's County
Sheriff's Office says it's arrested a seventy six year old
man on multiple charges of drug trafficking after a search
of his home. The Sheriff's office says the home on
Delaney Street belonged to John Moss, and there was a
sign on the front of the house it said absolutely
no drugs allowed on the premises.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
So this is rich.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
So a search lawrant discovered a completely different story. Detectives
thirty one and a half ounces of cocaine, thirty grams
of oxy counting four hundred and forty grams of marijuana,
seventeen grams of al prose lamb, five grams of morphine,
(08:10):
and then met methamphetamine as well, along with twenty thousand
dollars in cash.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Yeah, some handguns too. But I think investigators they saw
that sign it's him. Hmmm. Seems a little suspicious, like
a sign outside a crackhouse. Definitely nobody's smoking crack here,
you know, outside of met lab. Definitely nothing being cooked
in here, exactly.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
I wonder I share good with ad that case, but
you know, it's exactly. You try and get a little
too cute. Yeah, little and guess what. Yeah, and he
probably thought this is brilliant. I'm gonna hang this sign
if they're never gonna.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
Suspect anything drug. That's another good one. Yeah, I like that.
That's a good idea.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Dana.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Chris Trankman with today's Top Stories. Chris, thanks so much.
What we start with today's top stories And Natalie Rodriguez,
Good morning, Natalie, good morning.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
Nearly two years after offering a tourist in Miami Beach,
an uber driver is now charged with sexual battery on
a helpless victim. The irrest reports showing forty two year
old Raphael Martinez offered the woman a drink of vitamin water.
Next thing she knew, she woke up in his apartment.
Speaker 5 (09:15):
As probable cuss for the charges, he's an Uber driver
and took a lady back to his apartment who drugged
and then raped her.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Martinez is jailed without bond, and it's expected that he's
going to be walking out of jail at some moment
this morning.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Yeah, So there are a couple of things to run
through here. Obviously, this guy was a predator and he
deserves to be locked up, But there were also some
things that the tourists did that it's recommended you don't do.
First of all, when she stepped outside the bar to
order an Uber Martinez, he goes up to her and
(09:54):
he asks if she needs one, and she agreed, and
he was like, God, just you, you know, take the
ride and I'll enter you into the app later. You know,
we'll deal with all that later. You want to make
sure that when you order a new Berts, it's a
verified the d it's a verified ride. Yeah. Then she
asks for water when she's in the car, and he
(10:16):
hands her an already open bottle of vitamin water. You
don't want to You don't take drinks from strangers, right,
And that's when she she takes the sip, she feels
dizzy and then she passes out. So, you know, just
a couple of things there to remember when you're out
and about things that you you don't want to do.
(10:37):
You can you're putting yourself at risk. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
Meanwhile, we've got a disturbing story of a Miami Lakes
teacher arrested on a warrant at a North Carolina where
she's facing a charge for indecent liberties with a minor
twenty six year old Jordan Hawk was offered a choice
in court though, do.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
You want to wave extradition, agree to be transported to
North Carolina within thirty days, or can test that tradition
by the war and you'll be hearing at least nine years.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
I looked like to wait, that's a smart.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
Choicekannapolis police are now expected to pick Hawk up within
the next thirty days, so she'll be facing charges up there.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Yeah, we don't have a lot of information about what
exactly she allegedly did with the student, but you've got
a situation where she obviously sounds like did something inappropriate
and then came to Florida and was a teacher here.
And how many of these stories, I mean, we.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Just we've done one way, Yes, Yeah, I feel like
we're doing them every day now, sometimes multiple stories a day.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Now. Luckily she's not accused of doing anything with a
student here in Florida, but this time it involves, you know,
a female teacher twenty six years old, and we've had
a couple of those kinds of stories that have popped up.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Yeah, the female teachers are doing stuff.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Too, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
Yeah, and we've got a sneaky sneaker heist What a
week it's been for brazen robberies.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
First, we got the Crown jewels at the Loop. Yeah,
this is like a Florida version of the Louver Heights totally.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
Hundreds of pairs of sneakers were stolen from the Treasure
Coast Mall in Martin County. Cops are saying that the
thieves cut through the concrete roof. They dropped in like
mission impossible, into the sporting goods store and then made
off with Nikes, new balances, all kinds of sneaks. They
put the shoes in a bag then dropped from the
roof into a getaway car. So police are asking if
(12:22):
anybody knows anything to give them a call.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
It's a brazen heist. And let me tell you what. Now,
those those sneakers, they're not quite worth the jewels that
were stolen from the loof, but the sneakers can be
pretty expensive to get.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
Some like special edition Nikes and stuff. Those go for
a lot of money.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
Yeah, and you wonder, because this happened after the Loover heist, if.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
They can spy Yeah, yeah, cut through the roof.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
If they saw that and they said, you know what,
we can do that too. We've got this Champs sneakers. Yeah,
around the corner and we'll cut through the concrete roof,
and sure enough they did. Yesterday the Louvers directly there
spoke and this whole thing is just so embarrassing for
France and the Louver. Apparently the security cameras were pointed
(13:09):
in the wrong direction. Oh my gosh. I mean, it's
just one thing after another, and they keep saying like, look,
the infrastructure, the setup, it's just it's really old and outdated.
It's like, you're the Louver updated right, Yeah, exactly what
are you doing?
Speaker 3 (13:24):
They've got the Mona Lisa in there and all of
these jewels and they're just like a sitting duck.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Yeah, and you wonder if they must have thought like
this nobody.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
Try to do, because it seems like something out of
a movie, not something realistic, and sure enough it happened.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
I don't think they have any clues about who did it,
even still days later.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
Doesn't seem like it. But you know, the one theory
that was being floated that we mentioned yesterday is that
maybe it was some kind of like collector who commissioned
this heist, and maybe it's the same with this one.
In South Florida, where it's a sneaker collect there.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Actually, there's somebody who works here who's a big speaker
collection all out.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Yeah maybe too yeah, maybe they commissioned this, this heist
at the Champs store. Who knows. Natalie Rodriguez with Today's
top story is Natalie, Thanks so much, you got it.
