Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now let's go to the highline and bring in the
publisher of Southeast Politics, Janelle Irwin Taylor. You can find
all of her working a whole lot more at Southeast
politics dot com and you can follow her on x
at Janell irwinfl So, Janelle, it's not often Florida's entire
congressional delegation agrees on something, and it's probably been less
(00:23):
often that you have the Republican members of that delegation
stand up to President Trump and send him a letter
urging him to reverse his position. Tell us what it
is that united all of these members of Congress here
in Florida.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Offshore oil drilling.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Nobody wants that happening off the coast of Florida, because
we saw what happened when when it did happen, you
had the twenty ten BP oil still which just it
was just a devastating situation for the state of Florida.
Their tourism was just completely obliterated for a period of time,
(01:05):
even in places that weren't affected. You had like these
huge marketing campaigns from the you know, the Visit Florida
bureaus telling people, hey, our beaches are open, like you
can still come here, Like, sure you can't go to Pensacola,
but Clearwater Beach bring in. So you know, that is
(01:26):
something that nobody wants to see a repeat of. And
even you said the whole congressional delegation, Let's remember that
that includes Byron Donalds, who is currently running for governor
with President Trump support. So to divide President Trump on
this issue when the stakes are that high for one
of these members really tells you how important this is
(01:48):
to Floridians.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Well, you also had an order back in twenty twenty
that Trump had put into a fact that protected the
region from off shore drillings. This kind of reverses that
what the administration's looking to do now. I maintained when
this story first broke that there's zero chance that this
actually goes into effect, that there's any offshore drilling off
(02:10):
the coast of Florida. It's just one of those issues
that one of the very few that unites everybody in
this state, that really crosses party lines. Nobody wants this.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Yeah, and I you know, I was speaking with somebody
recently about this, and they made a really great point
that you know, if there was an oil rig five
miles off the coast of mar A Lago. You know what,
what would what would Trump be saying then, because it's
it's also an aesthetic issue. So like an example I've
(02:43):
heard is, you know, people who live in the Apollo
Beach area can get reasonably priced on waterfront property because
they're staring across Tampa Bay at industrial you know, infrastructure, They're.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Staring at Big Bend and stuff.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
So you know, I think that that's also something that
needs to be considered, is that it's not just the
risk of an oil spill, it's also the aesthetic of
staring at riggs when you're trying to watch the sunset
of the sunrise.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Yeah, and I think if you're the Trump administration, you
can do the whole drill, baby drill thing and just
keep it out of the Gulf the coast of Florida,
keep it off the coast of Florida on either side of.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
The states, exactly and exactly.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
And again, I would be shocked if this actually went
into effect, and you could see the alarm bells that
went off when this was proposed, when this was reported
among everyone from Byron Donalds to Maxwell Frost, And I
don't think there's much that Byron Donalds and Maxwell Frost
agree on this one brought them together.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
So that just tells me how you argue.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
They would probably argue about which color of socks fish.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
So exactly, we're joined by the publisher of Southeast Politics,
Janelle Irwin Taylor. Again, he can find all of our
work and a whole lot more at Southeast politics dot com.
While we're talking about politicians here in Florida, it's always
interesting when they get into these different TIFFs, and you've
got Senator Rick Scott taken a bit of a shot
(04:15):
at Governor Ron DeSantis over the Hope, Florida scandal. What
happened there?
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Yeah, so.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
This is not new. Governor Scott has.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
He and de Santas have had have had big beef
ever since DeSantis was elected governor, and so I mean
the Governor Scott, sorry, Senator Scott, has been just hammering
Governor DeSantis on the issue of Hope, Florida, which obviously
(04:52):
was a big scandal involving on Medicaid settlement money that
ended up making its way into political coffer is to
fund opposition campaigns against recreational pot and the abortion amendment
that was on the twenty twenty.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Four ballot, So this is a big deal.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
It's pretty much already tanked Casey de Santa's chances of
running for governor. But you know, these are two men
who just do not get along. And it was exacerbated
when DeSantis decided to run for president president, which anybody
who was on team Trump found as a personal insult.
So you know, Scott then endorsed Trump, and that made.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
The Santas match. So, I mean, this has been this has.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Been a political you know, am I allowed to say
the pew or the peeing match?
Speaker 2 (05:43):
And true? That is that is not it is. It
is not new in any way, shape or fashion.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
And then you've got Senator Scott he's backing Byron Donald's
in the upcoming race for governor, and Governor DeSantis still
not weighing in in one way or another. He hasn't
endorsed Donald's. He he hasn't said that he would even
like to see his own Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins enter
(06:12):
the race, which I find really odd. You're you're not
getting behind the guy that the entire party's coalescing around
and the one who President Trump endorsed, and yet your
own hand picked person you're not getting behind them either.
It's just it's a weird situation.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Well, he painted himself into a corner in some manner
of speaking, because you know, I think there was some
hesitation at first, because originally it was supposed to be
you know, here you go to your wife, Yeah, the
governor now, which, if I'm Casey, the santass a little
bit insulted by that, like, right, you don't get your
(06:49):
sloppy seconds or something. But you know, and then that
kind of fell through because of the Whope Florida issue,
and now Jay Collins is not doing the things. He's
not lining up the pieces that need to be lined
up in order to mount the successful bid for governor
in this state. He's not raising the amount of funds
(07:10):
he needs to attract support from outside the state. But
he's not getting the support from outside the state because
he's not raising the funds and he needs to get
people to endorse him. So it's kind of this witch
came first, the chicken or the egg sort of scenario.
So you know, he's at this point he does not
appear to be a viable candidate. Polling is putting him
(07:30):
consistently in single digits low single digits, I might add,
you know, whereas Byron Donald is just running away with it.
So at this point you don't want to have egg
on your face by endorsing somebody who doesn't stand a
snowballs chance in hell of being elected. I'm looking at
Paul Renner, who maybe he had the right calculus right
(07:51):
from the start.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
He said the santus willed adorse me eventually.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
And so he's just kind of waiting in the wings,
also pulling.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
In single digits, I might add.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
So, you know, I think that it's just if you're
a Republican right now and you're trying to endorse somebody
other than Byron Donald's, you run the risk of making
yourself look pretty silly.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
