Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's go back to the hotline and bring in ABC
News correspondent Jordana Miller coming to us live from Israel. So, Jordana,
huge announcement. Yesterday Israel and Hamas agreed to the first
phase of President Trump's proposed peace plan. What do we
know about how all of this unfolded and what comes next?
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Well, first of all, it unfolded much quicker than any
of us anticipated. It was only yesterday in the morning,
Wednesday morning, that all of the kind of heavy hitters
negotiators arrived in Charmeljak, right at that coastal town on
the Red Sea in Egypt. And many of us thought
(00:43):
it was going to take two or three or four
days to hammer out the details of this first phase,
which requires Hamas to release all the hostages, Israel to
agree to release over two thousand Palestinian prisoners, and for
Israel to carry out the first phase of its withdrawal
from Gaza right, not all the way to the end
(01:05):
or he's in the buffer zone, but to pull out
of Gaza City, parts of northern Gaza.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
I mean, we.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Thought this was going to take a long time, but surprisingly,
really swiftly overnight in really dramatic events. We saw Rubio
hand that note to President Trump, and that really tipped
off everybody here in Israel that the deal was actually
going to be announced, you know, in an hour or two.
And by the time that happened, it was in the
(01:31):
middle of the night here in Israel. Nonetheless, spontaneous celebrations
in hostage square, parents of hostages, you know, living in
dead calling into Israeli media, on the radio, on the TV, crying,
thanking President Trump. And what we know is technically what's
(01:53):
going to happen today is that the Israeli Prime Minister
is going to bring this first phase of the deal
to a vote of his government is also officially ratify
it the cabinet and then the full government. That will
happen around six pm local time, so eleven am Eastern.
And once that's done, the cessation of all hostilities, i mean,
(02:17):
the ceasefire, the quiet, the end of the war, whatever
you want to call it for now will begin and
the Israeli Army will hold all its fire hamas as well,
and within twenty four hours, the Israelis are committed to
moving out of Gaza, back to what's called the Yellow Line,
which was a map that President Trump first put on
(02:40):
social media. But it looks that like Israel will pull
out of right now it's holding about eighty percent of Gaza.
It will pull out and still reside in about thirty
percent of Gazan territory. So it's a considerable first withdrawal.
And then we'll see. We've been told by his early
(03:00):
officials that all of the living hostages twenty will come
out in one foul swoop, either Sunday or Monday, right
And of course the reports that President Trump will be
here for that continue though it's not official.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
And then what about the dead hostages and Israel getting
those bodies back.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
That's a much more sensitive issue. It turns out that
Hamas cannot locate all of the remains of the hostages
that have been killed, and so, you know, slowly but surely,
is early officials are telling the families that the you know,
releasing and bringing home the remains of some of the
(03:45):
hostages will not happen all at once. Maybe we'll see
some of them come out in that first seventy two
hour window, and then it looks like they'll be search
and rescue for some of the other the others, so
may take several weeks.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
And then finally we're jown by ABC News correspondent Jordnna Miller,
coming too US live from Israel. When does the next
step in the negotiation process begin? Because this is step one,
Phase one. Then you have the disarming of Hamas, the
future of Gaza, all of that that still has to
be ironed out.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
So we understand that the next round of negotiations will
begin after the living hostages come out, after Israel takes
up its position on the Yellow Line, so that would
be sometime next week. The sides that already jump in
to start discussing the day after that is the International
(04:43):
Security Force that's going to come in, Hamas's obligations to disarm,
the new governing council that's going to be set up,
and the full Israeli withdrawal that is to move out
to just a buffer zone around Gaza. So that'll probably take,
you know, I think.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Several weeks, all right, but this is what a huge
first step, that's for sure. ABC News correspondent Jordana Miller
coming to US live from Israel with all the latest
Geordana really appreciate the update, Thanks so much.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Thanks Ryan Tucson let's go straight to.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
The hoigh line and bring in the ABC News White
House correspondent Karen Travers joins us this morning. So, Karen,
I want to start with this remarkable moment yesterday the
President speaking to reporters, including a colleague of yours, when
Secretary of State Marco Rubio walks up to him and
I don't know about you, but when I first saw
that image, it reminded me of George W. Bush in
(05:40):
Sarasota on nine to eleven. Only this time it was
good news that the President was learning about. But that
was the start of what became this huge deal that
came together. The first phase of this Israel Hamas agreement
being reached.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Yeah, and the President said, you know, to the Secretary,
many updates in the Middle East, and you could tell
that Rubio didn't want to give a headline there and
he kind of rurred a bit. But then the photographers
in the room, who are incredible photo journalists, zoomed in
on the piece of paper that the President had been
handed and it said, we need you to approve a
(06:17):
true social post so you can announce deal first. So
that was clear that something was imminent. And then within
the hour to the President had announced that there had
been that agreement between Israel and Hamas on this first
phase of the deal. And this is very significant. It's
a major breakthrough after so much deadlock over the past
(06:37):
couple of months. You know, they've gotten close to a
deal but not seen it through. And now the expectation
is that once this gets past the initial phase today
with the Israeli government, we could see the release of
the hostages potentially on Monday. It also includes the release
of Palestinian prisoners by Israel and then the partial withdrawal
(06:58):
of IDF forces from Gaza. That's all phase one. Phase
two is where it gets more difficult in terms of
the governance of Gaza security there, but that has to
be worked out. But for now, this breakthrough of phase
one is very significant, and of course the hostage families
are just you know, celebrating with significant jubilation.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
And then, real quick, what are you hearing about the
president making a trip to the Middle East for all
of this?
Speaker 3 (07:24):
He said yesterday he would go to Egypt, but now
that was before he announced the deal, so that kind
of implied there was like filled negotiations or something that
he had to get it across the finish line. Since then,
the Israeli Prime Minister has invited him to speak before
the Israeli Parliament. Indications the President could be doing that
this weekend. Stay tuned. We'll see if the President announces
something more today.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
RBC News White House correspondent Karen Travers with us Karen,
