“Why does Leander, Texas seem to boil water more than any other town in the state?”

That’s just one of the quirky questions JB and Sandy dive into on this lively episode of The JB and Sandy Show, broadcasting from Austin’s 80s station 103.1 and streaming on iHeartRadio. From a crime wave hitting beloved local spots like East Side Pies and Amy’s Ice Cream, to the explosive growth of Texas towns like Leander, New Braunfels, and Cypress, this episode is packed with local flavor, sharp wit, and nostalgic storytelling. Sandy shares hilarious memories of growing up in Georgetown, while JB paints a vivid picture of retirement dreams floating down the river in New Braunfels. Listeners are treated to a “You Have to Do One” challenge, where the crew debates which of three very Austin events they’d attend: a bluegrass night, a fantasy-themed costume party at Tiny Minotaur, or a live show by Scrappy Judd and the Appaloosas at C-Boy’s Heart & Soul Bar. The banter is fast, funny, and full of personality.

Guest Tease: Don’t miss the preview of tomorrow’s guest, legendary Longhorn football voice Craig Way, whose presence promises comfort, insight, and maybe even a custom play-by-play featuring JB and Sandy.

Memorable Moments & Quotes:
  • “Leander has to boil water more often than anybody in the state of Texas.”
  • “You got an empty two-liter of Mountain Dew? Blow in that, okay?”
  • “Apparently, when a jazz band is on point, every member of the band is playing a different song.”

Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is the JB and Sandy Show on Austin's eighty
station one oh three point one, streaming on the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
A crime wave in River City. Oh, we've got one,
and they're messing with one of Austin's favorite places.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
A crime wave in River City makes it sound like
this story should be in black and white.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
You're right. We'll get to that in just a second.
But first, Uh, Leander, Texas, you guys are filling up fast.

Speaker 4 (00:29):
Yeah, this was a new list of the fastest growing
zip codes in America, Leander coming in at number four.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Wow. Wow, I mean that's just hard.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
I mean, growing up in Georgetown, Leander was one of
the only places we could make fun of.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
You know, they call them Leanderthals. Now that they're both
like sophisticated towns.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
There's a bunch of Texas zip codes on the list.
San Antonio comes in at number ten, you know, seven, eight, two, five, three, Roseville, California. McKinney,
Texas coming in at crazy growth up there.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yeah, that's north of Like we thought Frisco was a
way out there.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
Now McKinney's you know the next one, right, Parker, Colorado,
Queen Creek Arizona, Katie, Texas coming in at number five. Wow,
Houston suburb Winter Garden, Florida number three, and then the
top two are Texas. New Bronfels comes in at number
two and Cyprus, Texas, which is a Houston suburb, comes

(01:37):
in at number one, being the fastest growing.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
It's funny because it seems like the one like Leander
has just moved around because it was round Rock right
for our longest time, Brown Rock was mainly yeah, and
then it's moved over to just moved over to what
do we just say, I'm sorry Leander, Leander so Bronthos
has been big for a while. Yeah, I'm afraid lou

(02:01):
Bronfols is going to get ruined.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Yeah, eventually it's just going to be Austin. But Kyle
new Brompols, it's just all going to run together. So
it's going to be one big, giant city, nothing in between.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
I hope everybody that moves to Leander's cool with boiling water.
I feel like they have to do that a lot. Right.
That is weird because it does seemed to happen to
Leander has to boil water more often. I know anybody
in the state of Texas. Yeah, it is weird. Of
three hundred and sixty five days they're boiling water, three
hundred and fifty of them. I'm not kidding. I don't

(02:35):
know what's going on up there, but you better be
ready to boil you be as well. Pre boil it, right,
pre boil it, freeze it. Yeah, So they don't tell
you that. Your real estate agent doesn't tell you that
when you're shopping for your house in Crystal Falls, you
know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
I mean, it's not a question I would think to
ask either, how often do I have to boil water here?

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Have you been out to? Have you seen Crystal Falls
in the last five ten years? Tybe? Yeah, my father
in law lives in that general area. Beautiful, Yeah, gorgeous,
gorgeous And yeah, he fatched up to a golf course
and it's just man, it's like rolling hills. It's really pretty. Yeah.
And they redid that that golf course too, which is
is pretty cool. So Leander growing up. I mean, but

(03:15):
if you had to choose between all those, I guess
that's the one I would choose in Texas anyway, I'd
choose New bromp FLEs. I feel like my first inclination
is New bromp Foles. Really you just want to float around?
Is that what you want to do?

Speaker 4 (03:26):
Yeah? I just think I just if they can hold
on to that culture there like this got old German culture.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
River. The river's tubing, it's laid back. I can see JB.
I could see JB in his retirement years running an
inner tube operation. Yeah, just to have a truck full
inner tubes and a bus to drive people around. Yeah,
see you doing that charge extra for the tubes with
the bottoms.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
Yeah, yeah, Yeah, had hoggers, Tugen Tu get some dumb name.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Right, and then at the end have big you know,
Saint PAULI girls serving the big things are you know?
I never in my life have been to the what
is it down there? Uh? Worst fest in New Brothels.
I've never been. I don't think i've been either. I haven't.
I haven't been in years. But yeah I used to.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
We used to go a lot in college and stuff
because I was I was studying German in college, so
it was very fresh in my mind and we'd get hammered.
And I talk to the old people in Germany. Bet
they loved it, ladies, Yeah, they love me.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
They probably just got I mean we're going to kiss you, right,
so yeah, probably we'll never go. I mean that's really
not a place for a guy that doesn't drink anymore. Yeah,
for you to do nothing, it'd be awful. Uh Again,
I would to remind everybody that Craig Waye is going
to be with us tomorrow. I know I told you

(04:53):
guys earlier, but we're excited to have Craig on the
show talk Longhorn Football. Well, there's something about just hearing
his voice is comfort. Jamie. Let me ask you this.
So I was thinking, and I think it's an overstep
to do this. I think it's asking too much of Chris.
Are embarrass us? Yes, no, I'm not going to do it,
but I would love it if Craig would dream up

(05:15):
and do like a play and used our names in it.
Like Sandy is under center, he drops back, he looks,
He throws Hager's hoping across the middle. He sets up
the joke.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
Hager sweeps left, grabs the joke and runs with it.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
He dropped it. Tricia picks it up, saying good night
to this one. But I don't want to do that
to Crag so beneath him though, you know what I mean,
like he's a right right to do that would be,
but I may do it anyway. He might just see
I mean, what do you got to lose? I know,

(05:56):
no right? If that and me'll never come on the show. Yeah,
I'll never see him again. East Side Pies and Amy's
ice Cream have been robbed. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
East Side Pies apparently is being targeted. Is what's going on?

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah? I think it's crazy.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
East Side Pie has three locations in Austin and all
three of them have been robbed this month.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
You know what that is someone that used to work there.
That's an inside job. Yeah, yeah, that's a discron employee.
Why else would that happen?

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Did they? And then they just knocked over the Amy's
ice Cream next door to the one on one eighty three.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Right, yeah, this weekend the east Side Pies right there
on one to eighty three near Anderson Mill, that little
little complex that one was broken into and Amy's ice
Cream is right next door and they shattered the glass
door of Amy's.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
I don't know if anything, but no one has cash anymore.
So what are they? What are they stealing? Pythons?

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (06:47):
You want pepperoni? Right, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
And in one of them they have a full on
frontal video photo of the guy breaking in one of
the guys, I mean he's wearing a hoodie and a
mask and stuff, but I mean it's like he's looking
into the camera.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Somebody's going to figure it out.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
Oh, there's so many cameras everywhere. They'll figure it out,
and then they'll just they'll go to cameras start moving
out away from it until they eventually find the.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Car that they got in and out of. Everything's on camera.

Speaker 4 (07:18):
Now you can't Yeah, I don't know how you think
you could get away with it right exactly?

Speaker 2 (07:23):
And what's it worth? Right now? What are they getting?
You know, unless they had a refrigerated truck with them,
all the ice cream, they still would melt. Yeah, it
might be still in their crushings. Cool, it's just not cool.
They shattered the glass to do it. Not these are amateurs. Yeah,
just a shattered door. I don't think anything was missing
from from Amy's. But man, somebody's real mad at East

(07:45):
Side Pies. I remember my mom's flower shop got robbed
twice and they figured out they figured out who it was.
It was the delivery guy the guy that delivered flowers
for him. He knew that knew where they because they
would hide the they would sometimes they wouldn't could deposit
every night, and they would stash the cash under a
box in the cooler, right, and he knew it, and

(08:07):
he knew he knew it. And then so yeah, he
robbed him two times and then I caught him. Yeah,
my dad caught him. Oh that was the last time.
He made him confess. He confronted him and knew that
he did it and told him he was going to
call the police on him, and he had some probably
scared him to death. Yeah, your dad really pissed off.

(08:29):
Would scare the hell out. Yeah, he would scare the
hell out of most people. Scary guy. So anyway, Yeah,
but it's got to be an inside job at the
East Side Pie's place, So that sucks though getting robbed.
We had time for that, to catch him in the act.
Somebody likes the Steeler. Come on, go learn your money.
Coming up on the show today, guys, I got three

(08:51):
things that are happening in Austin. I'm gonna tell you
this much. I picked three things that I know you
wouldn't want to do, but You're going to be forced
to pick one of them, all right, all right, stay
with us.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
This is the JB and Sandy Show on Austin's eighty
station one oh three point one, streaming on the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
All right, the name of this is called You Have
to Do One. I picked three things that are happening
in Austin, and I'm gonna tell you what they are,
and then you have to pick one of them that
you would go to. Okay, okay, Well start out with this.
One is today six point thirty at Sea Boy's Heart
and Soul Bar, Ladies and Gentlemen, Scrappy jud and the

(09:34):
appallusas are playing. I do like that bar, do you?
I've never been. Where is it?

Speaker 4 (09:40):
It's on South Congress near like Live Oak Ish and
it's uh it's it's the same owner of Continental Club,
so it's got similar vibes.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Well, this guy's kind of legit. It's a funny name,
That's why I brought it up. But this guy's been
playing me music with a lot of bands, including the
late Ia mcloughan, Walt Wilkins, Patty Griffin, Ray Wiley, Hubbard,
Beaver Nelson. Is that one of Willie's kids. I've never

(10:16):
heard of Beaver Nelson. Look Beaver Nelson. Okay, and see
what what Beaver's all about. All right, he's produced a
bunch of records too. So there's one option. Okay, now
we got let me see me hold on, I gotta
click back on my thing here. There's a I don't
have all the information right in front of me, but
there's a bluegrass night somewhere that you could go to

(10:37):
and bluegrass and finally, enter Tiny Minotaur's fantasy World. Don
your favorite costume and experience the fantasy world inside Tiny Minotaur,
a twenty one year old private social club. If I
had prepaid one day past to get entry, then wander
six thousand square feet of movie quality scenery and live

(11:00):
action performances in the world of Karth.

Speaker 4 (11:03):
I don't even know what that is what you just described,
I have no it's.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
Like all weird words you put together. You have to
dress up though for something.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
And you can interact with bairds or bards bards. You
can play mini games and order food and drink from
Caleb's traveling tavern.

Speaker 4 (11:21):
Don't worry if you don't have a costume, They're not
required Okay, oh wow, that sounds really annoying. The bluegrass
thing wouldn't be bad, Like I would enjoy the music,
I just wouldn't enjoy the people that go to that
that I.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Would be surrounded by. What kind of people are they? JB.

Speaker 4 (11:41):
That show better be free because the crowd that likes
bluegrass are not going to pay a cover and they
then they've you know, they've always got some T shirt
from something they donated to Yeah, you know that's the
only clothing they have.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
That's that's saving something thing, right, Yeah, yeah, but you
like blue I cannot stand bluegrass music.

Speaker 4 (12:06):
I just don't kind just so much people who like it.
So I guess I'd go with the Apple USA one whatever.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
Yeah, that might be a pleasant surprise, right, what's his
name is? Scrappy Jet and the Apple Loosis? Yeah? Yeah,
which one you go into? Trash?

Speaker 3 (12:20):
You know what, I'm not going to the minotar thing
because I'm not I'm not gonna wear a costume.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
I don't I'm not a fan of the dress up.
That gets weird.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
And I feel like the bluegrass music is so fast,
kind of high pitched that I.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
Feel like it's just stressful.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
So I think I'm gonna go with Scrappy Jet and
the Apple Loss too.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
I just feel like bluegrass music. I just it just
sounds like a bunch of poor white people from the
Appalachian Mountains that drink mountain dew, Like, oh, you got
an empty two liters mountain? Do you just go blowing that? Okay,
granny over here has got a washboard. Maybe that's why
they play so fast. They're all hopped up on.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
That.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Probably that kind of is the roots of bluegrass, though,
Isn't it just play whatever's laying around? Right? Yeah, washbo,
you just can't play a banjo slowly. True. You're right.
So I'm just not a bluegrass fan. If I had
to choose, I'm going with you JB to see Scrappy. No,
I'm going with Eu Trisha to see Scrappy I.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Think JB chose that. Oh no, you chose bluegrass, didn't you, JB. No,
I'm going to go to this because I like sea boys.
I'm gonna go with the Apple LUSA whatever. Oh all right,
we're all right, we're here.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
We go we just meet there start. It starts at
six thirty and we just all meet there, maybe get
something to eat. Before. I don't know, it might be
kind of fun boy. There's there's a lot of stuff
going on in Austin, but I swear I feel like
either I'm out of touch or this it's just not
that big a deal. Like, JB, have you ever heard
of the Pat Burn Band playing Saxon Pub tonight? You're

(14:01):
got to be pretty legit get on stage at Saxon.
That's true. Boys, this town got plenty of trivia nights
on Mondays.

Speaker 4 (14:08):
Yeah, oh yeah, they do want at my Cafe on
Monday nights. Oh earlier and Meteor they do trivia and
it's all on your phone.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
Now.

Speaker 4 (14:16):
They used to hand out tablets or like little devices.
Oh yeah, yeah, it's just it's a phone thing.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Now. There are some people like that is their thing,
is trivia in doing that. But there's all kinds of that,
Like that's probably a good thing to do on Monday
nights because traditionally Monday night not a good going out
and party a night. Right, They're just trying to get
people in the door, JB. I know, you go to Mozarts,
they've got international music. Monday it's Persian Night with smel So.

(14:48):
Persian Nights. Yeah, I don't know what that means, but
check that out. Were you just at Mozarts recently?

Speaker 4 (14:55):
Well, yeah, we our boats right by there and they
had a jazz the other day.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
This over the weekend. I was like, oh my.

Speaker 4 (15:03):
Gosh, Apparently when a jazz band is on point, every
member of the band is playing a different song at
the same time. It's just like I was just sitting
there listening to it. I was cleaning the boat and
listening to it, and it was just like, are they
communicating with each other at all? It feels like everyone's

(15:26):
playing a different song, And I guess that's good jazz.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
All the notes at one time. Oh, I wouldn't know
good jazz if I heard it neither, I don't know,
have no idea. So those are some of the things
that are happening today in and around Austin. Hopefully you
can join us again tomorrow. Craig Way is going to
be with us at seven point thirty talking longhorton football,
which should be a lot of fun. So make sure

(15:50):
you're here for it. If you miss it, grab the
podcast version of it. We make it available every single day.
Search JB and Sandy on the iHeartRadio app. It's Austin
Dad Station one O three point one. Well, that's it.
