“Have you ever seen a player more hyped than Arch Manning?”

That’s the question that kicks off this electric episode of The JB and Sandy Show, where legendary voice of the Longhorns, Craig Way, joins the hosts just 11 days before kickoff to break down the most anticipated season in recent Texas football history. Craig shares exclusive behind-the-scenes insights from practices, revealing how he prepares to call plays with precision and passion. From watching scrimmages from the press box to mentally rehearsing Arch Manning’s throws, Craig’s storytelling brings fans closer to the field than ever before. Listeners will get a rare glimpse into Arch Manning’s personality and leadership, including Craig’s personal interview with him at SEC Media Days and his unique connection to the Manning family through David Cutcliffe. Craig describes Arch as “glib, funny, and laser-focused”—a teammate who commands respect and brings energy to the locker room.

Craig recalls a moment at the Austin Rotary Club when he jokingly pretended not to know Arch’s name—highlighting just how dominant the young quarterback’s presence is in the media and among fans.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the JB and Sandy Show on Austin's eighty
station one oh three point one, streaming on the iHeartRadio app.
All right, it's hard to believe eleven days until kickoff,
and it's a big first game. In fact, it's the
first time Number one and number two have played in
an opening weekend game ever. And we're joined by the
voice of the Longhorns. And I've said forever I think

(00:22):
the best play by play guy in the business anywhere.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Craig Waite joins us.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Hey, Craig, I bet you say that tall the girls.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
It's great to be all with you guys again. How
are you, Craig?

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Are you fired up for the season, because I think
everybody is. I mean, ranks number one in the country
preseason can be a curse or it could be a
good thing, but doesn't matter.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
I think everyone's fired up. The question is are you.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
I'm always fired up for the start of a brand
new season, no matter what the season is, but maybe
maybe a little more anticipation for this year given what
could be out there for this Texas football team. The
build up is obviously in full blast mode, but I
think in a lot of ways it's quite merited. This

(01:07):
is a really good football team, even with a lot
of the guys that they lost off last year's group
and the ones they had to replace them with the
very talented guys, and they've been developed really well. So
it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch this team.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
How do you get up to speed in a new
season with the new talent and new names so you
can talk about them so intimately, like how does that do?
You have a lot of access to practices or how
does that work?

Speaker 3 (01:34):
I do, and so I'm able to see a lot
of what goes on at practice and familiarize myself that,
you know, practice, I'll be down on the field watching
the team when they scrimmage in the stadium. Quite often
I'll move upstairs to the press box just so I
can get the overhead, as they say, all twenty two

(01:58):
view of what's going on, and then I can, you know,
kind of work through my mind how I would call
a play when they're saying, for instance, if they're in
a scrimmage on a first down play and you know,
Arch Banning's taking a shotgun snap and he's taking a
hand off and he's going downfield, Ryan Wing.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
You know some things like that.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
You're rolling it through your mind as you're doing it,
But the familiarity starts with being on the practice field
for sure.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Craig Way is our guest today.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
You can catch them with all the action right here
on Austin's Ady station Weddo three point one. Of course,
our sister station's ninety eight point one. Cavett and Am
thirteen hundred the zone. Let's talk about this kid from
New Orleans, this quarterback Manning, that's his name. Have you
had much dealings with Arch? Have you had to sit

(02:45):
down with him? Have you gotten to know him a
little bit? And if so, tell us you know what
kind of kid he is.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
First thing it comes to my mind, Sandy, is when
I was speaking at the Austin Rotary Club last week
and it went open for questions, and I hadn't said
his name by name yet. I was just talking about
the team in generalized terms, and naturally I knew it
was going to happen the first question with somebody said.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Tell us what you think of Arch Manning?

Speaker 3 (03:13):
And I said, excuse me, I'm not familiar with that name,
you know, because his name has been the.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Most talked about name.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
To answer your questions, Eddy, Yeah, I've gotten to know
him a little bit.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
I have a unique connection to him as well.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
My color analyst on long worn men's basketball is Eddie
Orrin Eddie of course, longtime former assistant coach in Texas.
He's an NBA scout with the Brooklyn Nets and he's
been around the game a long time. Eddie is also
the brother in law of David Cutcliffe. Now, for folks
who don't know, David Cutliffe was the offensive coordinator at

(03:51):
Tennessee when Peyton Manning was quarterback. Then he was the
head coach at Old Miss when Eli Manning was at
quarterback and is very very close to the family and
works with him a lot. So getting to know Coach
Cutt as they like to call him, is a lot
of fun. And when I was at the SEC media
days in Atlanta, I went back into a private room

(04:15):
to do an interview with Arch and also with a
couple of the other Longhorn players who were going to
be there, Anthony Hill and Michael taff And while I
was in there, Coach Cutcliffe walks in and you could
just tell the family relationship that was there with the
Manning family because it's been there a long time.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Arch is a great teammate.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
He's very glib, he can be really funny, but he
dials in and is as focused as it can be
when it comes to getting his team ready to play
a football game, ready to lead the offense onto the field.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
And that's why I think he's such a popular teammate.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
Have you ever seen a more hyped player to start
in the in all of your history of covering Longhorm
football than this arch Man?

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah? I don't think so, Jav.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
I mean, Vince Young had a lot of preseason hype
going into the two thousand and five season, and it
was twenty years ago obviously, when Texas last won a
national title, and it's ironic that it was twenty years
ago that they went up to Columbus, Ohio and played
Ohio State and got the win there. He was hyped,
but not to the level at Archers, which is interesting
because Vince was coming off the season where he gradually

(05:31):
improved during the course of the year, got really good
by the end of the year, had a mammoth game
against Michigan in the Rose Bowl, so there was a
lot coming back, but there was so much attention paid
the usc they were a two time defending national champion,
they had a Heisman Trophy winner already and Matt Lionard
and of course Reggie Bush were going to win the

(05:51):
Heisman that year, so a lot of the national focus
was on that. Now, locally, as we all know, there's
always going to be a great deal of attention surrounding
the football program, no question, around the coaches and certainly
the quarterback. It was a backup quarterback for Texas in
the late eighties by the name of Donovan Forbes who
so famously said, the most popular guy on campus at

(06:15):
the University of Texas is the backup quarterback.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
And it was, you know, for a while.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
And certainly it was when Arts was playing quarterback, even
as quinn Ewers was having a really good collegiate career
at UT But now that it's come to fruition that
he is indeed the starting quarterback and will make his
real full time starting debut on August thirtieth. Last year,
of course, because of injuries to yours, he had to

(06:41):
start a couple of ball games. But the fact that
he is the anointed starter and starting quarterback, I think
carries with it an extra level of excitement and anticipation.
