Speaker 1 (00:05):
Okay, all right everyone, it's the JV and Sandy Hour.
Here we go. It's Austin Dad station one o three
point one. You have signal problems, by the way, you
can use the iHeartRadio app, which if you haven't download,
it's absolutely free, and then just search one oh three
point one. You can listen anywhere. And I think by

(00:26):
now most people know how to bluetooth their their phone
to their car. If you don't know, ask a kid.
They've get it done for you. If you are a grandkid, or.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Call up to bus stop or lemonade stand, say I
don't need a lemonade, but I pay two bucks to
show me how to connect this phone.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Every get the world would jump to help them, you know,
they're hell yeah, sure, they all know. It's just one
of those things. So thanks for being with us. My
name is Sandy. This is jab Hello. Trish is here too. Hello.
Remember yesterday we were talking about the Netflix meltdown for
the Jake Paul Mike Tyson fight. I was worried, and
I was worried about the Christmas Day game because Beyonce

(01:07):
is doing the halftime. Then you got the football gameinst
Christmas Day. Apparently the NFL reached out to Netflix like, Hey,
everything's gonna be all right for this yeah, and Netflix
is like, yeah, we're gonna be okay, so they better
be right deal?

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, how are they You're just gonna have to wait
and see, right, How are they going to prove it
until it's actually happening.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Right, Jimmy, do you think these big halftime shows outside
of the Super Bowl are going to become more and
more normal? Like Beyonce, that's about as big as it
gets for a football.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Smart move, you know, that's the whole thing with the
super Bowl and not you know, this could come across
as sexist, but they're trying to get more women watching.
And I've found that, you know, with my wife, sometimes
she tunes in for a halftime show or whatever, like
at the Super Bowl, and then she starts paying attention
to the game.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
I think over time, the non football fans that are
tuning in for a halftime show might become fans. You
just it just takes getting to know the names and
the players and watching the sport more, right. I Mean, heck,
if I could cover pro cycling for eight years, you
can figure out football pretty quick.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
I'm going to tell you this, though, I am sometimes
dumbfounded when I watch football with Tricia and our fifteen
year old daughter, I'm amazed how much they don't know. Like,
how do you not know that that if the ball
is fumbled through the thing? How do you not know
that if the ball is fumbled through the end zone
that it's the other team's ball on the twenty yard line?

(02:41):
How are you go through life?

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Just don't understand how you have all of those minute
details in your brain.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
I just how do you not know that you know
on fourth and twenty three you don't go for it? Like,
just try it and.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
Tell me why they always and the receiver gets the ball,
or when they're carrying the ball they run right into
the pack of guys that are all wadded up around.
You're clearly not gonna get.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Through right there.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
That's funny.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
It's I'll tell you, God's got a sense of humor, JD.
I mean, he really does. Giving me two girls that
know nothing about football, man, I know, it's just enough
to keep up.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
I don't know all the weird stuff.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
We're gonna have a little bit of a house divided
next Friday, a week from today, when the Aggie's and
the Longhorns because our daughter's an Aggie fan. I mean,
her friends, you know, are going some of her friends
have gone to A and M. She's thinking about wanting
to go to A and M, and so she's like
an Aggie fan. I'm like, oh, this is gonna be
a tough It's gonna be a tough, tough day. We'll

(03:45):
get into more about that Aggie game. And just a
little bit because it's insane. What's going on to get
tickets in College station. It's absolutely nuts. We'll get into
more of that in just a little bit. If you
can't be with us for the whole hour, remember that
you can grab the podcast. Just search the sand Show
and look for the ones labeled the JB and the
Sandy Show. Tris is going to give us the story

(04:05):
we love coming up. What you got? All right?

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Do you guys remember Barbenheimer from last summer, the movie
Barbie in the movie Oppenheimer.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Yeah, they've opened on the same day.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Open on the same day, both huge box office successes.
We have a new one, a new one that's happening today.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
All right, stay with us. The story we love is next.
It's the JB and Sandy Hour. Still to come on
the show, guys, I want to know what the worst
punishment you ever got as a child was, because we
do not punish children the same way that jen X
got punished. Is a completely different world, and I think
they're getting off easy. So harken back to your childhood

(04:42):
and share the worst punishment you ever got. My punishment,
the worst wind I ever got, is so random you've
never heard of it before. It's like my mom invented
this punishment on the spot. All right, I'll tell you
what it is, coming up in a bit, the stories.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
We love, all right, nobody can forget Barbenheimer again. It
was The Babe Barbie and The Vibe Oppenheimer, both dug hits,
both open on the same day in theaters, both incredible,
incredible box office smashes. So we've got a similar situation
brewing for this weekend.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
It's called Glicked.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Do you guys want to take a guess at what
Glicked is?

Speaker 1 (05:17):
No? Gladiator two? I'm sorry, dab, were you gonna guess? No?

Speaker 2 (05:21):
No, no, you got to go ahead? Gladiator and then
now Wicked.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
That Gladiator two and Wicked both open today and both
are expected to do huge business. According to projections, Wicked
is going to take in one hundred million to one
hundred and ten million dollars in its opening weekend, and
they think Gladiator two should be around sixty five million.
And I think this is a new thing for movies
instead of spacing out big smash hits, to not be

(05:47):
competing with each other on the same weekends. They've talked
about combining them with these Barbenheimer's glickeds to make people
more excited to go see them both.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
It's I find that so interesting that I know it
bragging rights and they, you know, the movie studios want
to recoup their money.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
As quickly as possible.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Yeah, but I mean, do you guys ever think if
you if you do, it's probably rare that you're like,
oh my gosh, it's opening weekend. I gotta go.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yeah, it's the opposite for me. Oh, there's gonna be
so many people there, there's no way I'm gonna go.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah. Yeah, I've never been. I got to see it
first person. Yeah, it's not a big flex for me
to go, Hey, guess what I saw Barbie already, you.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
Know, have you I don't know if you've ever or
anyone listening if you're ever spending time in LA and
so many of those people work in that industry and
everything revolves around premieres and openings and stead and it's
it's really weird, but you have to remind yourself they're
in the industry, like where their family is. It's like,

(06:53):
it's like here, if there's layoffs at Dell, you kind
of go, oh, yeah, I know someone who works there.
But they all live, eat, and breathe this stuff, and
I'm like, I don't care that it's opening.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
I had a friend, believe it or not, and I
don't know his last name. He just we just called
him Big John. And Big John made a tidy little
side hustle, betting on the over and under of the
weekend box office returns on movies. They would set a
number of you know, is he gonna do thirty five million,
and then he would bet, no, it's gonna do more

(07:28):
or it's gonna do less. And he was really good
at it. And again he was he worked in the
business of the movie business, so he kind of knew it.
But yeah, that's a that's a whole industry in southern California. Yeah,
I bet on anything m but I'm not gonna see
I'm not so the what was the first one called.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
Barbenheimer, Barbenheimer, Barbie and Oppenheimer.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Right, I didn't see Barbie and I didn't like Oppenheimer.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
I saw Barbie and I didn't finish it. I was
like h and Oppenheimer. Everybody said it was so boring,
and even try it was boring.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
I'm with you.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
I haven't seen I never saw Barbie, and I didn't
like Oppenheimer.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
It just was too weird.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
They I think they were trying to make it too
artsy and they.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Screened up the storytelling. Yeah, you watch the whole thing
because I gave up on it.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Yeah, I saw that one at the theater.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
I think, right, I'll go see Gladiator at the theater. Yeah,
although I don't think it's going to be near as
good as the first one. Can't be. The bar is
just too high. Right. And the thing about Wicked, did
you see that? AMC movie theaters like put out a
notice don't sing during the movie. Yeah, you can't sing along? Right, Like,

(08:42):
why did they have to do that? Woulout have been
a thing, you.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
Know, Well, apparently according to their their ticket when you
agree to buy the ticket. You agree to their rules,
and one of them is nothing to disrupt other audience members.
And apparently that's one of the things they're anticipating.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
What is it?

Speaker 3 (08:58):
What is the show that people get out up in
front of the screen and rocky horror like it's expected
for that.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
People just want to go to Taylor Swift movie. Oh
my gosh.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
I took our daughter JB to the Taylor Swift.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
Meeting and everyone's singing along.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
It was like being at the concert, all of the
girls standing up, dancing around, dressed screaming the entire two
and a half hours of the movie.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
A Pedophiles Dream.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
TV.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
No was there one creepy guy there by himself. Come on, mama,
bears were scanning everywhere.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
But all the mom said on the outside and all
the kids on the inside.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
But you got a good time too, had a great time.
I see how that would be fun.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
But you know that, especially at places like Alamo, they'll
do sing alongs later, like they'll do yeah Grease singalongs
or some old stuff.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
Yeah, so it will happen.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
If that's if you got to if you got a
sing while you're watching Wicked, it's common.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
It's weird. To have to just be patient. Well, you
know what good segue. Speaking of movies and entertainment and stuff,
stick around. Our friend Steven Presley from thunder Pop TV
is going to join us next on Austin's eighties station
one oh three point one. It's the JB and Sandy Hour,
and we're joined as we are every Friday, by our
friend Stephen Presley. You can find him on Instagram and

(10:24):
YouTube at thunder Pop TV. Big Day Today. This is
kind of kickoff of movie season as we get closer
to Thanksgiving than Christmas when the big movies come out.
So this is probably an exciting time of year. A
lot of people excited for Glady eight or two. What
are you hearing about it?

Speaker 4 (10:40):
Yeah? Yeah, absolutely, And you know it's right now with
the critics rating on Rotten Tomato, it's only ten points
under the original, which is not bad. I mean, the
original only has eight percent of Rotten Tomatoes, and that
movie to me is a masterpiece. Right, It's a clinic
on how to make a big budget motion picture in

(11:00):
my opinion, But this one's sitting around seventy three percent
the early critiques spoiler free critiques on it, and this
is actually not necessarily a bad thing, because it kind
of follows what legacy sequels tend to do, is follow
the beats of the original story, the original movie. There
seems to be a lot of that going on in
this film, where there it's going to follow a lot

(11:20):
of those beats, and we saw that with Top Gun.
It seems to be a template with these movies. Also
that the acting is stellar by many of the lead
actors in this movie, but over the top at times,
including a Denzel Washington with his character. But they said,
if you like over the top, Denzel, then you're in

(11:41):
for a treat this movie if that's your thing, because
you'll get a heavy dose of it. So yeah, And
also some interesting things that just came out even this week.
People Magazine did a story on the original Gladiator and
how they've been trying to make a sequel to it
for quite a while, and apparently Russell Crowe this is this.

(12:02):
I had to vet this story because it just seems
so outrageous. I couldn't believe it. But apparently at one
point early on they had Russell Crowe had meetings with
Ridley Scott and he wanted to be a part of
the sequel. And he pitched the idea of him coming
back to life and even something as wacky as walking
through a portal to come back into the story. And

(12:25):
then really Scott said, no, you can't walk through a portal.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
That's not gonna work.

Speaker 1 (12:29):
That's weird. I would be.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
More interested in the prequel of Maximus becoming a general.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
Yeah, yeah, that's interesting to me.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
But the.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Kids Russell Crowe involved, he's sort of aged out of
that prequel part.

Speaker 4 (12:46):
Yeah, the aging technology though. You know, they made the
whole Netflix movie that I was the Irishman, all those actors.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
Forgive me, but what is this movie? This is after
the death of Russell Ro's character and we're still in
ancient Rome. We haven't gone to space or anything or
you know.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
It's hasn't been ruined yet, right, Yeah, maybe in the
movie they might tear down they might destroy the Colisseum
the way some of the previews look with like the
shark tank and the wrestling the rhinoceroses. So I mean
it's possible what they might destroy it in the movie,
but uh, you know, uh, the well, at least they

(13:25):
tried to take it to space, at least with with
Russell Crosse pitch with the portal apparently what's funny. What's
even funnier is Ridley Scott then countered with another idea
where he's like, what if we have a warrior that
gets killed and then comes back reincarnated as another version
of you? And Russell Crowe wasn't on board with that
because he was like, well then I won't be the actor,

(13:46):
It'll be somebody else playing me.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Yeah, Russell, you just shut out of this one man.
You had, you had your time, right, yeah, right.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
They could have found somewhere to put him in.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
They shouldn't have killed him in the first one.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
No, it's what made it a me.

Speaker 4 (14:00):
Well, he has fomo and he's admitted recently he has fomo.
They're coming out with the new movie, seeing all the
actors out promoting it, I mean, he definitely has that.
I think a flashback scene. I'm hoping they I'm hoping
still there is a flashback scene in this movie that
they shot something new from the past.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Okay, that is out today, right, it's out today everywhere? Yeah,
all right. Prime Video, that's Amazon's video. They're now the
number one streamer.

Speaker 4 (14:26):
Yeah, and I've always believed that Prime I mean I
thought this for a while. We've heard, we've heard of
the streaming wars, especially during during the pandemic, the streaming wars.
So I've always felt like Prime Video was best position
to compete in the long run and win the streaming
wars ultimately and be, as the Rock would say, the

(14:46):
final Boss. But I think because of the revenue they
make that the other streaming companies don't make through their
other things in their portfolio. Obviously Amazon and of course
Amazon we're talking about acquisitions earlier. Amazon acquires a lot
of other things as well that bring into their portfolio,
But they have a revenue stream that say Netflix doesn't have,

(15:08):
or Paramount Plus doesn't have, that they could use to
funnel in to their content, and they can really throw
a lot of money at content that the other streaming
companies I don't think can. Even Disney Plus is sort
of limited to a certain degree because they lean so
heavily on their ips Star Wars, Marvel ticks are and eventually,

(15:28):
I mean, especially in the case of Marvel and Star Wars,
they're kind of starting to run a little stale at times.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Did they dethrow Netflix as the number one streamer?

Speaker 4 (15:38):
Yeah, it's been back and forth for a while, but
Prime leads right now, and Prime has led more recently
than any of the others. Yeah, I'm a little surprised
that they, you know, even over Netflix.

Speaker 1 (15:48):
But that's another thing.

Speaker 4 (15:49):
You know, Netflix doesn't have the portfolio that Amazon has
to be able to take that. There's no extra revenue
that you have from other businesses that they can pour
into content to compt in the arms race.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
That's so interesting. If you had asked me, I thought
it was Netflix by a mile. Me too, But then
I have not used Amazon Prime, but I'm quite often
I mean, sorry, Amazon streaming. I obviously I use Amazon Prime.
Most people do because you got to have toilet paper
in four hours immediately got you know, the convenience of

(16:23):
Amazon Prime. And you sit there and you go, wait
a minute, do I have streaming, like like they'll give
it to you sometimes, Oh, I have this. I can
see how you're you're picking it up. I just need
to get it on my brain. I could probably I
can maybe dump Netflix. I don't know.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
Yeah, yeah, well yeah, that's my big question is like
I was gonna I think you just answered my question, Jabi,
was the last time any of you watched a show
on Amazon Prime.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
Seriously, don't I check when I go through that whole
I'm ready to watch something, and then you spend thirty
or forty five minutes looking at all your streaming services
and then you end up not watching anything. You know,
I hate that. But I can't remember the last time
eased Amazon Prime. It doesn't really Prime Video and Chill
doesn't really roll off the tongue Netflix and Chill does though, right.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
Yeah, but Netflix has never made a profit, right, I
mean they lose money, lots of money every single year.

Speaker 2 (17:17):
So well, I know I still have two DVDs I
haven't returned in my desk.

Speaker 1 (17:23):
Is you're the reason? Stephen Presley is our guest. You
can find him on Instagram at thunder Pop TV, same
thing on YouTube. Speaking of streaming, is the Walmart getting
in the streaming game too?

Speaker 4 (17:37):
The Walmart they kind of are right now in the
streaming gaming because there's a bundle. So we're talking about
Amazon and Prime delivery and getting that toilet paper in
four hours, which is very important. But so Walmart has
tried as being you know, has been positioning themselves to
attempt to compete with Amazon Delivery for quite a while with.
What they have is their version of Walmart's delivery service,

(17:57):
and so they have a package you can bundle. If
you do the Walmart Delivery subscription, you get Paramount Plus
bundled in with that. But I think at some point
you know Paramount Plus and we're gonna talk to you
about CBS. There's a story came out a week ago
about CBS is in trouble supposedly, and CBS Paramount is

(18:18):
part of CBS Paramount Plus. If they were to go
up for sale, would Walmart maybe be in the business
of wanting to try to compete with Amazon on that
end of things and acquire a streaming a streaming service,
just acquire one.

Speaker 1 (18:32):
Is this your philosophy, your guests, or you've read this.

Speaker 4 (18:35):
There's a speculation online about it, so I'm not the
first person to come up with it, but I've kind
of put, you know, connected the dots a little bit
on it.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
I feel I'm confused by who's bundling who it's like,
isn't Paramount already bundled with somebody else, like Paramount just
sleeping around with everybody? Like I don't know where you're
going to find out who's bundled where. And I'm sure
that I'm paying for the same streaming service more than
once because I got a bundle, you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
It's very confusing.

Speaker 4 (19:03):
Everybody's bundling around.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Yeah, I don't know. The Walmart people are pretty smart.
If it's a good move for them, they'll do it.
If it's not, they won't do it, you know what
I mean. They they're pretty good at what they do.

Speaker 4 (19:16):
Yes, surely they have enough money if they that could
compete I think with Amazon. Because a Walmart bundled with
a streaming service, there's capital there to I think compete.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
Yeah. Find Stephen on Instagram at thunder pop tv and
you also find them on YouTube same name at thunder
Pop tv and Stephen, We're off next week. You have
a happy thank Scooping. We'll talk to you soon. Okay,
I'll have a great one too. Thank you. You say
good night to this one.
