Welcome to the Saturday Stein Line withMark Stein, presented by Panini Trading Cards
and Collectibles. On ninety seven oneThe Freak, the official home to all
Dallas Neverick's games, hosted by legendaryNBA reporter and publisher of his substack,
The Stein Line. Here's Mark Stein. Yes, indeed friends, Hello once
(00:29):
again and welcome in to the latestedition of the Saturday Stein Line, presented
by Panini Trading Cards and Collectibles.Mark Stein back with you. We've got
lots of NBA talk, FIBA WorldCup talk coming, Panini card giveaway is
(00:56):
back because I'm back in studio.News and commentary to come, not only
about your Dallas Mavericks, but thebeyond the local NBA enterprise. We will
always get into league at large mattersas well. Have to admit I grudgingly,
(01:19):
grudgingly and back home after a veryenjoyable stint in New York watching qualities
in the first few days of theUS Open. I always love being in
studio. Don't get me wrong onthat. This is being in studio on
a Saturday absolute pleasure. But Iknow I've mentioned this on last week's show.
(01:44):
I've mentioned it more than once. The weather was just so good,
so inexplicably good in New York, and I will say today is milder.
I definitely felt it parking the carout there, because since I've gotten home,
I've gotten a lot of well it'sone hundred instead of one hundred and
ten, and it really feel youknow, yesterday, I didn't feel like
(02:07):
yesterday was all that all that friendly, but today today was livable as I
trudged in from the parking lot toget into this studio. But enough whining
about the weather. We got lotsof feel good stuff to talk about on
hardwood. It is a big footballmorning, of course, and for some
(02:31):
of you that means Colorado and TCU. For me that meant Manchester City five,
Fulham one, Chelsea nil, NottinghamForrest one. That's where my morning
focus was. But there's so muchbasketball to get to, and we've got
a great show lined up. Wegot a lot of different voices in this
(02:53):
show and we are going to getto in this segment. We're going to
talk a lot about yesterday's MAVs Bowlat the FIBA World Cup, which I
know is really important, a gameof huge anticipation for a lot of MAVs
fans Luca don Chich and Slovenia againstAustralia featuring Josh Green and Dante Exam.
(03:22):
I've got two special guests forthcoming tohelp me with the breakdown of what we
saw yesterday. First, though, want to remind you because I'm back in
studio. The text line is backin operation, the Steineline text line that
still awaits a sponsor. Two onefour seven eight seven one nine seven one
(03:43):
or eight one seven seven eight sevenone nine seven one. If you want
some basketball cards, and I suspectthat many listening do, Let's see if
you can win today's giveaway a beautifulbox of Pennini mosaic from this past season
twenty twenty two twenty three Orlando Rookieof the Year Paolo Bancaro. He's on
(04:12):
the cover. He's only twenty.I believe that makes him the youngest member
of Team USA at this World Cup. That I'm kind of doing off the
top of my head. But heis twenty. I do know that.
And so the twentieth Texter into theSteinline text line again. Twentieth Texter to
(04:33):
two one four seven, eight sevenone nine seven one or eight one seven
seven eight seven one nine seven onethe twentieth Texter today, and listen,
I need your name at least alast initial. If you want to give
me your first and last name, that's good too, but at least give
(04:55):
me an initial, the city you'rechecking in from, and very important,
do not forget the email address. If you give me all that and you're
the twentieth Texter, you are goingto get these cards. It is a
beautiful box with at least one autograph. All right. Last night in Manila,
Friday morning, our time, LukaDoncich and Slovenia score a significant measure
(05:21):
of revenge against the Asses, theBoomers as they are known in Australia.
Luca battled foul trouble, huge foultrouble. And you know, we've talked
about the limited nature of this Sloveniateam. With Goran drag retired from international
(05:43):
play, both Denver's flot Cochanchar andEdo Mudich, who is a Slovenian vet,
a trusted member of that team, those two guys dealing with long term
injuries, Luca and Co. Theyovercame all of that to clinch a spot
in the quarterfinals. With this winover the Assees. They prevented Australia from
(06:06):
even getting to the quarterfinals. Andthese are the same Boomers that had beaten
Slovenia in the bronze medal game atthe Tokyo Olympics. So you know there
was a There was a lot ridingon this one for these two teams,
and it fed the mood on aFriday in FIBA World Cup play that was
(06:28):
absolutely filled with upsets. You addItaly shocking Serbia, Puerto Rico stunning Carl
Anthony Towns of the Dominican Republic, the whopper Brazil bringing Canada back down to
earth just four days after yours trulyhad proclaimed in print that the Canadians were
(06:56):
the most interesting team international International BASKETBAway to ghostein Slovenia Australia a game again
of huge local interest. Any gamewith Luca that qualifies. But you also
had Josh Green, Dante Exam,Dante Exum, the new mav and both
(07:17):
of those guys happened to be gettingmore minutes from Australia coach Brian Gergon than
Matisse Tyble, the same Matisse Tyble, in case you had forgotten whom the
Mavericks extended a three year, thirtythree million dollar offer sheet Matisse Tyble a
restricted free agent. In July,Portland match that offer sheet and again this
(07:42):
game was so huge. It's whyI arranged two external reactions. I wanted
both the Slovenian and the Australian perspective. First up, we've got to take
direct from the Balkans. D magazinecorrespondent is Talk Franco another audio dispatch for
the show, I believe number three. Here is his stock reacting to a
(08:07):
monumental win for Slovenia. Man,it's hard to put some thoughts together after
such a win, even for arational guy like me. So much was
at stake in this game. Aloss for Australia would have meant they would
miss the quarterfinals, while a lossfor Slovenia would have made it very difficult
to advance to the medal rounds.Plus, there is a lot of history
(08:30):
between these two teams. Australia wasthe team that defeated Slovenia and the Tokyo
Olympics bronze medal game, denying ourcountry its first ever Olympic basketball medal.
This meant we were in for avery physical, intense game. Don't Jig
found herself in foul travel throughout thematch, receiving his first foul on a
technical early in the second quarter afterhe drew a ball across the court following
(08:54):
the whistle. It's important to rememberthat in FIBA games only five personal files
are allowed, and technical fouls countas common files. Don't Chitch then picked
up his fourth early in the thirdquarter on another questionable call, when the
veteran Patty Meals dribbled and came toa halt in front of him. Increased
Paul's style. The Oasis also doubleteam Don't Chitch on every possession from the
(09:18):
start, clearly aiming to force someoneother than the Slovenian superstar to bid them,
and boy did the other step up. This game reminded me of EuroBasket
twenty seventeen finals, when Slovenia emergedvictorious despite the MVP Gore and Druggige having
to sit out most of the secondhalf due to cramps. It was the
(09:39):
role players who found a way tosecure the victory back then, and they
did it again today. Despite foultrouble and being unsettled by the referees.
Don't Chitch played very patiently and unselfishlygiving up the ball when facing the double
teams, much like he had doneearlier in this tournament, and surprising too
many don't Chich also find ways toimpact the game with his defense. In
(10:01):
the fourth quarter, he had acritical still in two on one situation during
an Australian fast break, and agame altering blog on his teammate Josh Green
emphatically rejecting Green's attempts in the paint. A team from a country of two
million with only one NBA player demonstratedthat they can defeat a team featuring eight
(10:22):
NBA players on its roster. Whilesome American NBA players may still view the
World Cup as a second tier competition, today both Slovenia and Australia shortcased why
these games carries such significance for internationalplayers, and I couldn't help but share
their passion and feel immense pride inthis team and how they represent our country
(10:46):
even while watching from a distance oftwo thousand miles. You heard is Stock
mentioned their Australia's eight NBA players. He was being a gentleman. It's actually
nine. Australia has nine and aplayers on this World Cup roster. That
is second only to the United States, a team with twelve NBA players on
(11:07):
the twelve man roster. So Australia, they had come close so many times
to a medal in various international competitions, constantly foiled. Then at the last
Olympics, the Tokyo Games contested intwenty twenty one, Australia finally broke through
got the bronze at Slovenia's expense. And much more was expected from Australia than
(11:33):
what we saw here. I mean, they are going out after the second
round, not even getting to thequarterfinals. And that's why I wanted to
connect with someone who knows Australia basketballinside and out, and he also has
deep Mavericks ties. Dallas drafted himwith the eighteenth overall pick in nineteen ninety
seven via Portland. It was myfirst draft as Mavericks beat writer for the
(11:58):
Morning News. So let's go nowto Chris Anstey. I connected with him
right after the game. This wasFriday night, Australia time. Here is
mister Anstey with the ASSI assessment whenwe expected so much more from the Boomers.
Good a, Marcy. It's beenreally interesting watching this World Cup from
(12:18):
down here in Australia. You know, since we meddled at the Olympic Games
in Japan, A lot of thebasketball public here recognizes our improvement with Josh
Kiddy, Josh Green, Dante's hada break out year in Europe since he
got his body right. We've almostcome to a stage where we expect to
(12:39):
meddle at every major event. Butour geographic isolation, I suppose we oftentimes
forget how much the rest of theworld improves at the same time. And
it was a really disappointing result againstSlovenia tonight for the Australian basketball public.
But I think a lot of uswho have been around the game for a
(13:01):
long time understand the depth of talentaround the world, not only in the
United States like it used to be, but even in these smaller European countries.
Luca don may very well be thebest international and NBA player to have
played in a long time. Wehoped, I think that Josh Green would
(13:22):
provide good insight through his time atthe Mavericks with Luca. You might argue
that he did. Luca got ina foul trouble, Josh scored the ball
early, but probably didn't impact thegame. Later on in the game,
Dante exam I'm really interested to seewhat he does at the Mavericks if his
(13:43):
body holds up. I think hissize, his athleticism on both ends of
the floor. You know, ifyou can add that three ball consistently for
the remainder of this tournament and inthe NBA season, could be really interesting,
but disappointing, not for Australian basketball. Were reminded again how great Luka
(14:03):
Doncic's on a global scale for theMAVs. You know, he's the superstar
you wanted him to be, andhe looks like he's in shape. Exciting
to see Slovenia go through, andprobably from MAVs fans, really exciting to
see how Lucy comes into the preseasonthe next NBA season. Seriously, hats
(14:26):
off to Luka Doncic and team Sloveniajust for clinching a quarterfinal. Birth they're
going to play someone really good inthe quarterfinals, so it'll be tough to
get to the metal rounds. Butyou know, given the absence of chan
Char and Mudich, and with Goreand Draga's international retirement, I said,
(14:48):
going in that a quarterfinal appearance wouldbe huge for the Slovenia team. I
know Luca probably doesn't see it thesame way, but quite an achievement to
get there, and basically we've got. We're getting to the quarterfinals now.
There will be two teams from theAmericas and two teams from Europe, the
top two from those regions still toclaim their spots in the Paris Olympics.
(15:11):
The four teams that are already inthe Paris Olympics host France despite its miserable
showing at this World Cup. Australiaclinching, Japan gets Asia's birth, South
Sudan gets the Africa spot in theOlympics. Absolutely amazing story. Lu All
Dang in charge of the federation thereand a team starring former Texas legend Carlick
(15:35):
Jones. Olympic birth for South Sudantremendous story, all right. Thanks a
mill to Professor Franco and Chris Ansteyfor those contributions. I know you guys
don't want to have to deal withmy Voice for Print for a whole hour
without interruptions face for radio Voice forPrint. A reader once said that to
(16:00):
me, and I'm still clearly notover it. Because about it was about
six years ago. But we don'thave time to deal with We don't have
time to turn this into a therapysession for me because we got someone else
to talk to live. Coming upafter the break Maverick's assistant coach Jared Dudley,
fresh off his second stint as theMAVs Summer League coach. It's gonna
(16:23):
be Coach Dudley with me. Next. It's the Saturday See Cards and Collectibles,
Dallas Mavericks The Freak. The SaturdayStein line rolls on here on ninety
seven one The Freak presented by PaniniTrading Cards and Collectibles and Guys on the
(16:45):
text line, I don't have twentyresponses yet. I am shocked. Every
other card giveaway. We were floodedwith texters trying to get these cards two
one four seven eight seven one nineseven one eight one seven seven eight seven
one nine seven one. If you'reTexture number twenty, first name, last
(17:07):
initial, city you live in andan email address, got a beautiful box
of Panini Mosaic cards. Paolo banCaro on the cover. All right,
let's get the MAVs talk. Let'skeep that going with one of my favorite
talkers, on the NBA map, about to begin his third season as an
assistant to MAVs coach Jason Kidd, and July wrapped up his second stint as
(17:33):
the MAVs summer league coach. Weare gonna get into it. We're gonna
get into all of it, DerekLively, Olivier, Maxen's prosper Jaden Hardy,
and I'm sure he's got other thingsto say beyond those topics. Let
us give a warm freak. Welcometo Jared Dudley, coach. It's good
to be here. If it's beena long time coming up. We haven't
(17:56):
done an interview this in year orso, it's good to be on.
It's going to be on show today. Yeah, it's funny. When you
were playing, I mean, Iremember, I remember when you were still
playing, and that your last yearin the Lakers, there was a there
was a line of reporters trying toget to you. So I'm glad that
today I do not have to fightthe lines. I've got you here all
to myself. Hey, Derek Livelyhad a I mean, this guy,
(18:18):
the expectations placed on him already constantcomparisons to Tyson Chandler, for a young
guy. How would you say DerekLively handled that in his first summer league?
Yeah, I thought you did well. I thought, you know,
every coach will always tell you aplayer you know they distracted, did well.
But I think with him, whichwas unique was as a nineteen year
(18:41):
old kid coming in was really goodat communicating. And anytime you think of
the top defensive bigs, you haveto have a communication skill. Yes,
it's good to block shots, Yesyou have to have athleticism, but to
communicate, especially when the call switches, when the direct these a guards over
to navigate over these screens. Sothat was the first thing for two is
he didn't care or or get frustratednot getting the ball, because you know
(19:03):
in summer league these guards come outand shoot the ball a lot heavy.
He hustled, He has means Sweeneyon him defensively, of all, would
he have to be able to doand some stuff that he didn't show in
summer league. What he's been showinga practice. He can shoot the basketball
man like he's a pretty good threepoint shooter top of the key. He
has that. But I thought hedid well. We had to he couldn't
(19:26):
practice the first two or three daysin Dallas because of the trade on draft
Day, and then he only getsreally one practice before he played in the
game, and we had we hadbasically on a minute restriction for the first
two two and a half games,I believe so. And then after that
we could play him, and theneach game he just got better and better.
(19:47):
Maverick's assistant coach Jared Dudley here withus on ninety seven one. The
freak center is such a position ofneed for this team. How do you
kind of as a as a coachand someone he's surely going to lean on
to kind of make sure he doesn'tput too much pressure on himself because he's
a young guy. I mean realistically, a guy at his age, you
(20:08):
don't just throw him in and say, hey, you're a thirty minute player
in your first season in the NBA. Yeah, you try to sip up,
simpify it for him. You know, he's the guy that you drafted,
so he had high expectations of senseof hey, he's an athletic,
he's the guy that we feel thatcould be all a BAMAI buy you eventually
when you could switch ball screens andkeep him in front. He has that
potential. He has someone to blockshots like Tyson Chandler. He has someone's
(20:33):
of communication to be able to runthe defense of how we want. So
our whole thing is, hey, listen and picking rolls no roller behind.
So we don't want that guy who'ssaid in the screen to catch lobs on
you. We want the guards tohave to finish floaters in long twos.
So that's the first thing. Makeit simple. Make your call early and
often, even if it's wrong. This is make a call, give our
defender a chance. If it's onthe side, let's ice it, which
(20:56):
means keeping the ball down, awayfrom the middle and at the top of
the key. Let's call a week. Week is making the offensive player uses
left hand to come off screens becausemost players are worst coming off your left
hand than you are your right hand. That's offensively, I mean that's defensively.
Offensively, it's real simple. Wewant you to set good legal screens
and make them have to go over. We have the best pick and roll
(21:17):
best player, probably the best playerin the league, but if not the
best player in pick and roll, and anytime that offensive defender goes over a
screen on Luca Danchets, we arethe best offense and one of the best
offensive NBA history, and analytically withLuca Dutchets, that's for one for two.
When they switch ball screens, let'sbury the small guarden the post,
and let's get a lot offensive rebounds. So just simplify, you don't got
(21:40):
to do a whole lot. It'sgonna be a lot coming out of you.
You're gonna make mistakes on the fly. No roller behind set legal screens,
make the defender go over and putpressure on the basket. We want
libs and we want and we wantto keep all our players offensively in front
of us to make long contested twos. I don't don't think I'm speeding speaking
out of school when I say that. I think MAVs fans are just as
(22:03):
excited about Olivier Max sense, prosperand you know, the sense kind of
the rumbles have been that you knowhe's probably more NBA ready, more likely
to be able to crack the rotationearly. What were your impressions of O
Max in his first summer league? Those incredibly hard like he we say he
(22:26):
kind of has a little Siakam inthem, like he's herky jerky of how
he finishes, He puts pressure onthe rim. He has an NBA framed
body ready to go as a rookie. He both of them just want to
get better. On work hard, and that's not every rookie man. Everyone
work. He says that, butby his actions liking drills, he does
(22:47):
it wrong. He wants to doit right two three times. I wasn't
that way as a rookie. Yeah, I wanted to get it right,
but I didn't go as hard andas physical in the veracity as he did.
As as he does, you know, so we can all we can
put it in perspectives. Doesn't meanthat other rookies aren't as good. It's
just he just goes super hard.He has a base of defensive league.
You could tell that he's not wasn'ta one and done that he's had a
little more season when it comes toof knowing defenses and understanding it offensively.
(23:12):
I think his struggle is we goso hard and his heads down. You
gotta be able to see the play. And now in the NBA, guys
are more athletic, they're longer. You gotta be able to make the read.
If there's two people in the paint, make the read, which he's
capable of. It's just now there'smore space and the guys are more athletic.
But you should be very excited bya prosper and Lively because these are
(23:33):
two guys that are going to play. The question is when they are.
He's going to be huge for thefuture because of what they provide versatility,
and the NBA's all about versatility andathleticism. We just added two key people
for that for the mass future, for now and for the future. And
before I get to you, beforeI get to your coaching future and what
(23:56):
coaching Summer League is doing for you, let's talk about Jayden Hardy. Of
course, injury did limit his participationat the end of Summer League, but
obviously this was a chance for himto kind of be the focal point of
the offense. How would you assessJaden Hardy summer. Yeah, it wasn't
a great Summer League. On thelie, it wasn't a great for him.
(24:17):
And it's tough, you know, like listen, like he was in
the Ignite one year, he getsdrafted, he played phenomenal the G League.
He played very well for us lastyear. But then now when you
come to the summer League, alleyes on you. You're the number one
option, all the defenses catered toyou, So it's a little bit different.
Hardy had crazy success for us whereyou're playing off the ball Luca,
(24:38):
where you're catching shoot, which isone of our best catching shoot shooters.
He's great of attacking clothes outs andthen going one on one. In Summer
League, we wanted to develop, which is, hey, get the ball
in your hand, read picking rolls, and at time I would say he
struggled. He was streaky, hewould turn the ball over, he would
shoot bad shots, and then hehad firts. Okay, he made the
(25:00):
right read. He did that, but it wasn't consistent of what you would
like. But that's what you haveto improve. That's what we're working on
every single day. But when youcome back to the Dallas Mavericks, you
don't need to do that as muchbecause we have two top tier guards that
are doing that every single play. But we're still going to need him.
But I think it's something that heneeds to continue to improve on decision making
(25:22):
when it comes to driving and makingthe right read if it's one on one
earth, if the big traps andmaking the past week side and also shot
selection hey stand with from the longcontested two step backs. Yes he is
step back is very lethal from three, but be able to be more on
balance and to be able to putthe defense in a vulnerable position by the
(25:44):
past sometimes to open it up foryou offensively. But we have huge plans
for Hardy here in the future andsomething that we're hoping that can continue to
develop. MAVs assistant coach Jared Dudleyhere with us on ninety seven one The
Freak the Saturday Stein Line presented byPanini America. So you know, as
you as always, you did notsugarcoat it. I mean, Hardy didn't
(26:06):
go out there and average thirty somethinglike maybe some were hoping to see in
summer league. How do you thinkhe handled a summer league that you know
was not an A plus performance fromhim? How do you think he's gonna
kind of reality that he's such acool, cool, funny kid man.
It's just I mean, listen,he was what I don't know from Vegas,
(26:27):
who lived in Vegas. You gotall that pressure when it's on you,
you know, you know you haveme as a coach. I'm telling
you, I'm giving you twenty fivethirty shots, and he's gonna bounce back
because now you get back to yourhome setting, you get back to playing
with other pros and and people makingit easier on him. Like, listen,
it takes a while. If youcould, if if you compare to
(26:48):
Jordan Pool, someone like Jordan Fool, because I see that comparison, and
it's very valid to a certain degree. Jordan Pool had one year a bad
basketball of the Wars being terrible forhim to do whatever he could, shot
terrible shots for the whole season, and then Steph and them came back from
injuries, and then they had tokind of tighten him up a little bit.
And then by his third year theyI think they win a championship either
(27:10):
third or fourth year and even andthen we would still we still as an
entertainment from media, we still questionJordan Pool shots right, Oh, where
is Jordan Pool? Is this? It's a terrible shot three. It's very
similar. He hadn't hard he didn'thave that year of just hey, listen,
you could do whatever you want. No, you're having to do it
on a Luca Dante's Dallas Mavericks teamwhere the balls best in his hands and
(27:33):
so we're trying to, you know, win games and develop him at a
certain time, and sometimes it isdifficult. He's done a phenomenal job,
and I expect this season to beeven better. I picked the MAVs to
be even better because of that. And now let's talk about Jared Dudley.
Summer League second stint for you asthe head coach of this team. I
(27:55):
imagine that being a head coach inthis league is something you aspire to.
How do you think you're progressing asa coach? And I know you you
won't sugarcoat that either. Yeah,I mean it's going slowly. This is
what I needed. I'm in norush first year. People don't understand.
(28:15):
I mean maybe you do, butmost people now. When I retired,
I was. I became a coachthe next week and I was at the
mav facility two weeks later. Likemost people, when you take a job,
it's April, you have April,May, June, July. I
took a job in August tier September. So the first four or five months
I was in a mental spin ofstill as a player and that, and
(28:36):
it didn't take me to about DecemberJanuary where I finally hit my rhythm,
get rid of the player, andnow focus in and now on my job.
And I think for me, Itook this as really my first Summer
League because even though I head coachone game, when you're a head coach
you get to put your system inof what you want to do defensively,
offensively, how you want to runpractices, what drills you want. So
(29:00):
it got to be my show thisyear, which I loved, which I
use seventy to eighty percent of whatwe do with Dallas. But there were
some tweaks of how we trapped thepost, of how we played our angles
in the corner at the at thenail, of being more of a a
full rotate or full body help teamthan we are with the maps, and
ran a little bit of zone, which we did, took a little bit
(29:22):
of Miami Zone than our zone.Offensively high one too. Yeah, I
believe in finding the mismatch, butoffensively of cutting off the corner, cutting
off the slots a little bit differentthan how we do it. So I
got to be able to tweak thingsand show j kid, hey do you
like this? Do you not likethis? But there's a certain standard that
I wanted to have in certain practice. And so for me, it's working
(29:44):
on my exito, drawing plays, working on my temperament and how I handle
on the sideline and using my assistance. But for me, this is a
four or five step process. I'monly in step one, step two.
I'm more comfortable. I know whatI'm doing. I don't I don't need
to react. I'm going I'm hittingfirst, and then I expect to hopefully
I'm gonna ask Jake Kid again.I want to get a head coach again
(30:07):
one more time and then we canwe can pass it on man, but
to slow progress. I'm in norushing. My time will come soon enough.
And you're right, man, Istated I stated that incorrectly because after
your first season on the bench, you you were head coach. It was
a split deal where it wasn't youweren't always the head coach. This was
the first summer where you were fullythe head coach, and Man, I
(30:29):
radio goes, so dang fast.I got about five more things to ask
you and no time to do it. Gared Dudley, we are going to
do this again. I am soglad we connected. Thanks a mill for
being with us this morning. Manloved catching up. There he goes everyone.
Jared Dudley, MAV's assistant coach.Stay tuned after the break. Lots
(30:51):

the usual whining for me about howfast radio goes, and I promise

knew Jared Dudley was gonna make mewant to interview him for another ten more
minutes, but we ran out ofreal estate. Thank you to Jared Dudley
for that visit. We had isTalk. Franco from d Magazine and Chris
Ansty the former Maverick from Australia hadthem in the first segment. We also

box. We'll see. You'll haveto let us know if you get one.
All right, let's move into thenews of the week. I know
the loyal listeners of the show didnot need to wait until Saturday. I'm
sure you've been following the Javail McGheenews all week. On Tuesday, the
(32:25):
Mavericks officially waved and stretched him.On Thursday, McGee cleared waivers. My
podcast partner on This League on CutChris Haynes of Turner Sports. Chris reported
shortly after McGee cleared waivers that he'llbe signing with the Sacramento Kings. Mike
Brown, he worked with Javaie McGeewhen he was a Warrior's assistant, clearly
(32:51):
believes that he can get McGee,at age thirty six, back to a
more productive role. Look for theMAVs, this goes down as just a
major swing and a miss. Theymissed badly. They gave McGee a three
year deal in the seventeen million dollarrange. Didn't work out at all.
The Mavericks now forced to eat nearlytwelve million of that deal, which will
(33:15):
be stretched over the next five years. Now the McGee has been released,
a little more than two point threemillion a year is the cap hit over
the next five years. But againI am I am sure that many of
you have been following all that withoutme having to run you through it.
(33:36):
Did you also hear Mark Cuban.Mark Cuban was on the pat BEV Patrick
Beverly's podcast. He was on thepat BEV pod this week with Ron.
Mark Cuban spoke at length about KyrieIrving. He talked about some of the
struggles the team endured last year. But let's let's listen to this clip.
(33:58):
Mark Cuban specifically on Kyrie Irving. When you're on the outside looking at somebody
like Kai, right, I didn'tknow him at all, and I just
read the same stuff and you seea dude bounce from team to team the
team, you get some perceptions, right, this is your perception of him.
But then I started talking to peoplebefore we did the deal. Everybody
loved him, and Lucas like weneed somebody else, and He's like,
(34:21):
you know, when you talk topeople, people love Kai and you watch
after a game. Yeah, guyswill trade jerseys. This is that people
will just walk up and a hugKyrie, right, not just like thanks,
you know, it's like that's thisguy, right, and we'll spend
time and talk. And now thatI've gotten to know Kyle a lot better,
that's who he is, right,Kyrie wants to think about things.
Kyrie wants to you know, connectto people and connect to his history and
(34:45):
know who he is. And youknow he wants to just take it to
the next level personally. But herecognizes that this is his game right here,
right, because if he gets bouncedagain, you know that it's like
you be a Hall of Famer. When you've bounced to five teams, even
though you've got Hall of Fame, people start writing the narrative about you,
(35:06):
right, and they already have right, So he knows and we've talked about
it, right, Kyrie is asuper smart guy, and he knows this
Lucas team. Here's no if andor butts about it is Lucas team.
And so he's he can play twoand when Luca's out of the game,
you do the same thing, right, Yeah, like what's Pepe do?
But you need me to be pointedon point. You need me to just
guard and run to the corner, guard and run to the corner. Lucas
(35:29):
that good that when Luca's in there, ky needs to run to the corner.
He'll run to the corner if theydouble him, and he needs to
come to the final line. Justget a bounce pass and play four on
three. What's better than that?So the big takeaways I think when you
when you hear all that, Imean, he you know, he's basically
(35:50):
the onus is on Kyrie Irving toreally make this partnership work. And you
know, early you're in that interviewwith Pat Bev and his co host Ron
there was Mark Cuban talked about theroster and his feeling that last season there
were issues with the role players notunderstanding their roles, and I would actually
(36:14):
say from my seat that the rosterwas really more of an issue before the
Kyrie Irving trade. On this scorecard, the Mavericks did not have another top
seventy five player on the team, and then they traded the two closest guys,
two top seventy five range Spencer Dinwiddieand Dorian Finney Smith. Those were
(36:36):
the guys traded for Kyrie Irving. So last season, obviously Kyrie and Luca,
the MAVs only went five and elevenwhen those two guys were in uniform.
The Mavericks clearly banking on the ideathat a full training camp is going
to make a difference. Josh bowfrom MAV's Moneyball, he had some great
(36:59):
stats this week that he tweeted abouthow when you when you looked at it,
Luca and Kyrie they played nine hundredpossessions together, and the numbers when
they were together they were more muchmore encouraging than a five and eleven record
would suggest. You know, theteam was plus four point six per one
(37:19):
hundred possessions in those nine hundred possessionsand average one hundred nearly one hundred and
twenty two points per one hundred possessionswhen Kyrie and Luca were on the floor
together. Obviously, no, defenseis not going to be the issue when
those two guys are on the floor. Off I'm sorry, Offense is not
going to be the issue. Defense, rebounding, you know, those are
(37:44):
still major question marks for this MAVsteam, and they've changed the roster significantly.
Grant Williams the foremost newcomer, andso you know, we're gonna see
if we're gonna see if the movesthat have been made will make the difference.
Because you know, I still fallin the camp of those questioning the
(38:07):
fit. I just would would yougiven your druthers in today's NBA when your
two most expensive players, you reallythey really have to snap together well because
of the limitations in building around anexpensive twisome. So you know, conceptually
basketball pure basketball theory, are Lucaand Kyrie are pairing that you would go
(38:34):
with to build your team around. This is the path the Mavericks have chosen.
They're all the way in on itnow. So it is very interesting
to hear Mark Cubans say things likequote, there's no ifs ands or butts
about it. This is Luca's team. Does Kyrie indeed see it that way?
We will soon find out again Cubanalso saying, quote, this is
(38:57):
his game right here, because ifhe gets bounced again, can you be
a Hall of Famer when you've bouncedto five teams even when you've got Hall
of Fame talent? Both valid questionsand I think questions that really, you
know, we can talk about howyou know. We talked about it with
(39:19):
Jared Dudley. How much will therookies Derek Lively and Olivier max Sen's prosper
how much will they be able tocontribute in year one? Dante Exum a
minimum signing, and by all accounts, he looks like he's going to be
a very smart minimum signing, whichis obviously a low risk gamble that the
(39:40):
Mavericks are hoping provide a rich rewardteams that can hit home runs with their
minimum signings. I mean, that'sjust a huge part of team building.
Grant Williams is going to be thekey newcomer. Josh Green remains eligible for
a contract extension. The Mavericks,to my knowledge, still hope that a
(40:04):
trade materializes for a clear veteran upgradeon the front line at center. It's
at this point we are in September. Can't see that happening before training camp,
but there's still runway until the tradedeadline in February. Is that something
that the Mavericks are going to beable to make happen? In the meantime,
(40:28):
it's probably Rashaun Holmes and Dwight Powellcompeting for the starting spot at center.
So I've listed a zillion different questionsthat you can raise about the Mavericks,
many topics that we could dive into, and you know, have lengthy
discussions about all of them. Butyou know, for me still the foremost
question is how will Luca and Kyriefunction as a duo. And yes,
(40:54):
some of the advanced stats paint amore favorable fixed, a more favorable picture
even than what we saw at theend of last season. But again,
you know five and eleven record whenthose two guys were in uniform. That
is, you know, that isthe most critical data and something that the
(41:15):
MAVs are going to have to disprovereal quick. We're gonna wrap up this
show with you know, The UndisputedIs is back on FS one after a
hiatus. They've got a new castwith Michael Irvin, Richard Sherman, another
former Cowboy, Keishan Johnson, mylongtime colleague and friend, Rachel Nichols.
(41:40):
It's gonna be a rating struggle goingup the first take Behemoth with stephen A.
Switt Smith. But did have anice moment this week when Keishaan,
Keishan and Skip got my attention talkingabout some of my reporting on janis Antea
Kumpo and how the Lakers and theNicks are presumed to be teams that would
(42:02):
interest Jannis on Teakopo if he everdid leave Milwaukee. There's something to be
said about wearing the purple and thegoat. Yeah, yeah, two NBA
titles in Milwaukee, seventeen in LA. You can be part of the nineteen
because we're gonna get one soon hereto beteen, but you can be part
of the nineteen twentieth in their own. Now, look, it's two years
(42:23):
from now. Million things could happen. Ye, But if we were to
get Jannis and we were to entertainthat seriously and Mark Stein fabulous reporter,
he's not. He's not just throwingit against the wall and hope it's stick.
He's really one of the best.He got it somewhere. He's saying
it because it's true, and ifit happens, then ain't man very kind
(42:46):
words. Jens Keishawn Johnson and Skipbayliss I greatly appreciate the shout out.
That was very nice, guys. That's gonna do it for this edition of
the Saturday Steinline. Next weekend, the final weekend for the Feeble World Cup
in the Philippines. Still lots ofthings to discuss there with Let's see how
(43:07):
far Luka Doncich can get with Slovenia, Team USA the clear favorite to win
gold. Can Canada rebound from itsloss to Brazil, and then September tenth.
September ninth is our next show,September tenth World Cup Final, and
then it's only two weeks and changefor the Mavericks convene for training camp.
(43:29):
You've almost done it, You've almostsurvived the withering hot summer. Thanks Azillion
for listening to me, listening withus, hanging out on yet another Saturday,
Thanks to Grooves. Thanks to alanAo for their help in getting this
show, keeping me from steering itinto danger. A lot harder than it
(43:52):
sounds, trust me,
