(00:18):
All right. As I was saying, we're just getting things going out here
today at the Alamo Draft House, you've got the speakeasy here on ninety seven
one, the Freak, and beforewe really get going here, there is
something that we need to address.I didn't think it really fell to me

(00:39):
to do this yesterday, so Ithought about it, but decided against it
because it's a Jewels thing. Youknow. She wasn't here yesterday and you
were down in Austin. Right, that's right, thank you, Mike.
Yeah, I wasn't here yesterday, and also wasn't here Friday, and it

(01:02):
wasn't a planned vacation day or anythinglike that. Thursday, I got some
bad news about my dad. Mydad has been struggling, and I've talked
about this a little bit, Ithink on the show with you guys,
it's been mentioned. Yeah, Sohe he's been struggling with early onset Alzheimer's

(01:26):
since his fifties, so his likemid fifties. So it's been over ten
years that we've kind of been dealingwith that and watching the very slow sort
of decline from him, and ithad gotten to the point where it's been

(01:47):
over a year or two actually wherehe really knew who I was, like
when I'd walk into a room andyou know, or knew who Kelly was
or my kids were or anything likethat. But we still loved to see
him obviously as often as we could, and we knew that he could feel
our presence when we were there. But it took a really bad turn.

(02:10):
I guess it was Wednesday of lastweek, and then Thursday night I got
a call that it was not lookinggood at all. Friday morning got a
call that the nurse had visited him, the hospice nurse, and she said
it was about a twenty four toforty eight hour window that they expected he
had left. So at that pointI hopped in the car and drove to

(02:32):
Austin to see him. And youguys were all so gracious, and Zach
our program director, of course,so gracious and said do whatever you need
to do. And even at thatpoint, you know, you hope maybe
he can pull out of it,or you know, you just don't know,
right, And Friday was a toughday, but I got to sit
with him most of the day,and Saturday it got a little bit worse

(02:55):
and I had the feeling that mightbe it about forty two on Saturday,
my dad passed away. And that'sthe way those things usually end. It's
an awful thing to watch, awfulthing to have to go through, awful
thing to watch. My dad wasnot doing terribly well himself along those lines

(03:17):
at the end. And yet it'sreally really difficult, it is. And
I'm sure anybody out there who's gonethrough this, and many of you have,
you know exactly what she's talking about. You know exactly how this went
for her. And it's the worst. It really is the worst to see

(03:38):
somebody that was once so vibrant andsuch a big part of your scene reduced
to nothing before they're actually gone.Yeah, and I know you've been through
it, and your nice words viatext helped a lot too, And you're
exactly right just seeing somebody like thatin that state, and there's nothing anybody

(04:00):
can do about it, Nothing theycould have done about it, nothing they
did to provoke it or deserve it. And then as their as your kid,
you know, and especially with kidsof my own, that they don't
get to really know him. Youknow, my daughter's vibe and my son's
eight, so they haven't really gottento know him because it's been going on

(04:23):
for a while, but we didhope we had a little bit more time,
and it did take a quick turn. But you know, it's hard.
And I've never been through a deathof a parent or you know,
somebody very very close to me likethis, and I've never been the person
that has to help make all ofthe decisions and plan and I know that's

(04:44):
something so many people go through. It's like, Okay, not only are
you dealing with the reality of this, but all of a sudden, you
have to be an administrative assistant andyou have to plan an event. You
have to maintain a modicum of commonsense at a time when and that's that's
a very far fetched idea for you, exactly, Like you kind of just
want a week to two weeks tojust wrap your head around it all.

(05:09):
But you don't really have that. And people they mean well and they're like,
okay, well, when's the service, what can we do? I'm
like, I don't know. Sothat's kind of what I've been what I've
been going through. And yesterday wedrove back and I knew even if I
hadn't made it back to Dallas intime, I wouldn't really be in the
right head space. And we gotback in town about halfway through the show

(05:30):
yesterday, and and you know,I'm gonna have to miss some time next
week. The service I think isgoing to be next Tuesday, and were
miss Christy, which is where hegrew up, and so you know,
we're just kind of taking it asit comes. But I thought, I'll
be here. I need to Iwant to work, I want to see
y'all. I want to laugh, and and you know, you got our

(05:50):
love, you know you've got oursupport. You know that as far as
we're concerned, you do what youneed to do, and we're here for
you. Thank you in any waythat that might call for thank you.
I appreciate it. And I've knownthroughout this whole thing that y'all were and
that you felt that way and youwere sending your good vibes and well wishes

(06:12):
and everything, and that really meansa lot to me, because I think
when you're going through something like this, like the last thing you want is
to really worry about work or thatanybody's going to be mad or judge or
anything like that, and you guysare absolutely the opposite of that and have
made me feel really just comfortable withpopping in here and actually right now getting
to talk about it and kind ofpresenting the information as it comes and not

(06:33):
feeling like I need to hide itor anything like that. So it and
that's one of the things I loveabout our show and our station is that
we can just be real and wecan be ourselves. And I'm not the
only person to lose a parent.I'm not the only person to have to
witness somebody go through Alzheimer's. Iknow. It's just unfortunately, way too

(06:54):
common of a thing that people aredealing with. And if anything, it's
kind of lit a fire under meto try and help find a cure for
this as well as cancer. Inow have two causes, so you know
that causes are exactly exactly. There'sjust too many dang things that can cut

(07:15):
our lives short for no reason, and it's not fair, but that's what
we got. So that's what that'syou know, what we're fighting through.
But my dad was one of thehappiest, most positive goofy I swear all
my goofiness it came from him.And he's just he's somebody that always wanted

(07:35):
to keep the mood light and wantedto have fun. And of course a
really amazing tennis player who played atBaylor, was number three in Texas when
he was eighteen years old and wasthe captain at Baylor, played into his
adulthood and was a pro for awhile. And so you know, I'm
just gonna try and be happy andplay tennis. So those are a couple

(08:00):
of my priorities now and being herewith you guys makes me happy. So
we appreciate it. We're you're backwith us. Thank you, glad to
have you. Yet at the sametime, we know what you got to
do here and you just do itand don't worry about us. Thank you.
I love you all and I'll keepyou guys posted. Grooby, let's
fire up that sports Oh yeah, glad everybody, Julius transition. Yeah,

(08:31):
I need to get me in themusic. Thank you boy? Can hear
it? All right? So youmight have touched on this a bit yesterday,
but I did want to discuss thiswith Jeff here briefly on the sports
desk because those of you, toquote a wise person who I admire so
much, those of you who area fan of the Tony Pollard Free Cowboys

(08:52):
presentation get excited or if you lovehim, I'm sorry, don't get excited.
The Cowboys not planning to use theirfranchise tag on running back Tony Pollard
this offseason. I think this wasa schefter bomb that came down yesterday afternoon,

(09:13):
said the Cowboys not expected to tagfree agent to be running back Tony
Pollard for the same amount of money, and then a few other running backs
as well, Derrick Henry. TheChargers are expected to let free agent to
be running back Austin Eckler explore freeagency and it seems to be a movement
all of the right now, allof them, Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs

(09:35):
with the Raiders, everybody. Thisis going to be the best running back
free agent class ever because every teamhas decided, Nay, we're not gonna
pay that, and the salary capjust went up huge and still they're like
twelve million bucks. Nah, Andit's wild how far that pendulum has swung.

(09:58):
Yeah, it really is to whereAnd I believe that the Cowboys are
very much in on that idea ofno, at that position, we can
get that job done and we don'thave to invest big money or a big
draft pick and there's a decent chancethat they do use a fairly high draft
pick on a guy, but Ithink that the vast majority of the NFL

(10:20):
has decided we are not going touse in the salary cath league a bunch
of that money on running back.So parents just accordingly, so raise your
kids to be running backs. Whatyou're trying to say, it was just
three or four years ago where thatwas something you absolutely had to have and
if you had to pay a guya whole lot of money to do it,

(10:41):
you paid him that money to doit, and you didn't think twice
about it. I mean, that'sthe place of the running back just a
few years ago. And I thinkyou can look back, like right at
the time when Ezekiel Elliott held outand the Cowboys folded and paid him big
money, and you can look atall all those guys that got paid right
around then and look at the resultsof how those contracts played. Yeah,

(11:05):
that could have been the tipping point. None of them went well. I
mean, even Christian McCaffrey, whois very well paid and obviously very successful
in San Francisco. The team whogave him all the money traded him to
San Francisco. Yeah, because they'relike, oh, I don't need to
have all this money and him,we're not really going anywhere. Let's just
ship him off. And I don'tknow, I don't think even as a

(11:28):
guy who is if I'm not thepresident, I'm the vice president of the
Stop Paying running Backs Club. It'sinteresting how far it's gone. I didn't
know what you were even the vicepresident of the Stop Paying running Backs Club
prior to the president. Really, yeah, I don't ever want to pay
running backs like the Tony Pollard onewas. Actually he's not the president,
he's the czar. Yeah, Joefounder. But it's interesting how far it's

(11:52):
gone that pretty much every team isgoing nah. And so now you have
all these big names that hit themarket and it's like, okay, hey,
whatever, you're not going to tagme, that's good, I can
go get whatever contract somebody's going topay me. Well, all of your
team's just told you that no.And so that's eight teams down right,
and now you don't have much leverageand I'm the civil authorities have issued an

(12:22):
immediate evacuation for Roberts d X,beginning at two forty seven pm and ending
at three seventeen PM Roberts County mandatoryevacuation leave now use the US sixty heading
southwest. Our shelter is set upat the First Baptist Church in Papa at
too oh three Northwest Streets, Papa, Texas. See what they do.

(12:50):
And I don't know that that's somethingwe all saw coming. Tony Pollard not
going to be at Dallas Cowboy. It looks like next season. Naturally,
I can't think of his name, but I was reading some stuff on this
last night, and I did seeone running back in the draft that the
Cowboys are said to be pretty high. You know who I'm talking about,
probably Jonathan Brooks. That's it Texas. Yeah, he's Texas running back.

(13:13):
He's coming off an injury, buthe's super good. And that's a guy
that you'd spend a second. Maybehe could get away in the third,
but yeah, you'd use a reasonablyhigh pick because he'll be considered one of
either the best or one of thetwo best guys in the draft. And
I think the Cowboys would love thatan early to mid round pick that makes
a million, million and a halfa year as opposed to because I mean,

(13:35):
that's the way you have to viewit is if I really think that
a twenty one year old, twentytwo year old can do this job really
well, he's gonna do it forone twelfth of the price of a guy
that we're paying that's a free agent. And that's the way they're viewing it,
is like I can get this jobdone for ten percent of what you
want. Yeah, I guess youcan't blame him when you look at it
that way. Yeah. I justI wonder how many guys are teams going

(13:56):
to look at and be like, right, but he's good enough that it's
considerably different, Like the forty nineers viewed Christian McCaffrey that way. I
don't know how many teams are gonnaview different guys like Saquon Barkley is super
talented. Is nobody gonna view himas And it depends where you are as
a team, Like there are teamsright now that have one hundred million dollars
to spend. The Cowboys are eightmillion dollars over the cap, so they

(14:18):
have to extend AAC, extend CDmove money around. But the teams that
suck like they got eighty million dollarsto burn, surely one of them will
be like, all right, let'sget one of these running backs and give
them ten twelve million dollars a year. Some of these guys will get paid
because there are some teams that justhave money to burn. But I think
most of the competitive teams are justlike, I'd much rather have a left
guard. I would much rather havea corner. And I'll figure your position

(14:43):
out later. No, probably likethe Cowboys right now are kind of butt
naked at running back. Yeah, that's what I was thinking. No,
Pollard, Rico Dudell is, Well, we know that Jack the free agent,
but he's a guy Deuce Bawns onthe roster, the full back hundred.
We need a running game for Dakto be who we want back to
be. And I think that's out. And that's the thing is most teams
are reviewing this as a good runninggame is not dictated by the guy holding

(15:05):
the ball. It's dictated by thefive guys yep, showing him where to
go. Yep. Well, it'llbe interesting to see what happens there.
It is definitely going to be aneventful free agency in the NFL. And
I will take a quick little buzzerhere, Ruby, thank you. Let's
see the Dallas Mavericks are back inaction tonight. This is going down in

(15:26):
Cleveland this evening at six thirty.Like Jeff mentioned in the last segment,
we will get out of here atfive thirty for the pregame show as this
all goes down right here on theFreak. This is the second of a
four game road trip Mavericks coming offof their first loss in a long time.
This is the first of a backto back tonight in Cleveland. They

(15:46):
will play in Toronto tomorrow. Soit's the second of a four game,
two country week long road trip forthe Dallas Mavericks, which of course started
with that one thirty three to oneto eleven loss at Indiana that I know
you guys talked about here on theshow and kind of brought everybody back down
to earth a little bit. Whenwe thought the Mavericks might never lose again.

(16:07):
I really did. I really thoughtthey might never lose again. And
I think they were winning on averageby like seventeen points. Now there's seven
game win streaks, so they werejust beating people. They were killing everybody.
Yeah, I thought they'd never lose. And during that seven game win
streak, they held all seven opponentsto under one hundred and fifteen points.
That was the longest such streak thisseason. So their defense was really good
too. And we'll see if hopefullythey can get back on track here tonight

(16:33):
while they're on the road. DanteExum is doubtful to play in this one.
Josh Green with that right elbow injuryis probable for this one. And
the last time the Mavericks played Cleveland, it wasn't very pretty. It was
December twenty second at the DOUBLEAC andCleveland was able to overcome a twenty point
deficit and beat Dallas one thirteen toone. Ten. Dallas was without Kyrie

(16:57):
in that one. Cleveland also waswithout a few of their starters as well.
And I know the guys were beingasked about that game yesterday and saying
they remember and they're trying to seekrevenge. Oh. Also this real quick
Jason Kidd is am I liked whendiscussing when discussing the mavericks good defense as

(17:19):
of late during that seven game winningstreak, not against Indiana, but during
that seven game winning streak, hesaid, well, I think it's February.
If you want to be a goodteam, you have to be able
to play defense in March and Apriland May and June. Yeah, ye,
all those months, So February doesn'tmatter. Yeah, you've got three

(17:42):
more days that we're not worried aboutthat. But started March first, we're
going to really lock in. Man. I hope our team can play defense
in all of those months. Ireally do would be great. So should
be hopefully a good one tonight onthe Freak at six point thirty with the
Dallas Maverick is really good too. They are second in the East. Oh

(18:03):
Man, Yeah, it's gonna bea tough one. But luckily the Mavericks.
Let's see Luca, Josh Green,Maxi Kleva, Derek Laveley's second all
probable for tonight's game. Uh So, I'm we're in a pretty good spot
when it comes to the health. And let's take a quick buzzer here,
Grooby. All I really want tosay about the Dallas Stars is that they're

(18:25):
coming off of an overtime loss tothe New York Islanders. It was three
to two at home and they did. They've had a couple of games now
from one of their top prospects,Logan stankovin uh and he had a goal
in the loss, and this isexciting news for Dallas Stars fans who have
been kind of waiting to see whathe has to bring to the table.

(18:45):
He's looking really good. He wasdrafted alongside Wyatt Johnston. You said his
name was stank Ovan. I did. I knew that was all y'all we're
gonna hear you're gonna talk about somethingstanky of it? Yep, yep.
Oh yeah, he's good ship.He played stinky leg for Oh yes,
that's going to be his official goalsong. Yeah, you're gonna do some

(19:07):
Leonard Skinner that smell. Oh yeah, yeah, get some stinky stuff going.
I forget where I saw it,but oh yeah, what do you
get? Come home? I'm notdoing that. We missed it that anymore.
Coward Matt, Matt Dushane and stinkOven. Uh where the two responsible

(19:30):
for the goals? And I sawone tweet that was like the Dutch ovene
stank Oven, So yeah, that'skind of I don't know if that's the
if the big news here is thatthere's a guy named stank Oven playing for
the Stars, or that this isan exciting prospect that we're getting to see
hit the NHL level and who alreadyhas a goal in the NHL in just

(19:52):
his second career NHL game. Yeah. The Stars also getting ready to host
the Colorado Avalanche tonight and they stilllead that Central Division. Actually, they're
in Colorado tonight, they're not hosting. And since I've already ran out this
entire sports desk, we're not goingto get to check out checking with Dirk,
but I will let everybody know thatthe Texas Rangers are on the road

(20:15):
for spring training today, visiting theArizona Diamondbacks. Send me in weit yard.
Whoa, yeah, like twelve minutesago. Oh he did? Oh
yeah, oh wow, smooshy smooshi. We need to like bust into our
show whenever we get some home runnews, even if it's spring training,
everything training, every time a Rangergets a hit. Yeah, we're really
excited, still, aren't we?Yes, we are. I am very

(20:37):
excited. Yeah I still am.Yeah, me too. I don't even
like the fact that spring training ishere. I'm not happy anymore. I'm
a pissed because I'm still you can'tbe pissed. I'm still on behind from
last year. I don't I don'twant it to end and I took an
inordinate amount of pleasure I mean, way way more than I should have in
the fact that the Rangers did wintheir first ring training game this year.

(21:00):
Did you party pretty hard? Idid you know? You're still hungover?
Oh gosh, don't make me getEmily Jones in here all ready to kill
at you today. Yeah, you'resafe today, she'll be tomorrow. There
you go, there she is,There you go. That's Julie's sports test
for the day. All right,we may check in with dirt coming up

(21:22):
next. But also we do haveJeff's bucket. Oh crap, you will
not guess what was brought to school. And man, I did not intend
to wake up and read this, but you have to hear about it if
I have to know about it next
