(00:00):
Nay, judge, I guess heclearly on? Guess right? Who?
(00:34):
The weekend? The weekend? Okay. Every time I hear this song,
I can't turn it off. Iwant to, but I just can't.
It's a good song. Catch youall right? Five thirty six is our
time you were listening to the LittleSpeakeasy with me, Mike Reyner, him,
(00:56):
Jeff Cavanaugh, her, Julie Dobbs, and at the Helm Today it
is Garrett also known as G Moneyor Evan Carter, whichever one you want
to pick, the older Evan Carter, because Evan's just a babeae. Helld
are you twenty four? Twenty five? Yeah, you're way older than Evan
Carter. Shade out of your teamsman. Evan Carter's twenty one. Yeah,
(01:22):
yeah, I'm the older one,and he won a World Series and
he makes more money than me.Part well, he makes more than all
of us. Yeah, so it'snot just you. Yeah, it's all
second round money. That's decent moneyover the millions. Yeah. Let's see,
we're gonna further business we need totake care of here, can tell
(01:44):
me where you want to do yourRangers business in the lounge before we get
to the lounge. Whatever you wanted. I'd rather do it in the lounge
in the because I like being inlounges and bars and places like that,
sitting around drinking beer or whatever andhonking base. Okay, let's do it.
Let's do it. A day isalmost done, man, it's time
(02:09):
to tear it on down. Beforeyou do, you got to figure this
out. You're gonna drive right byyour place. You want to pull in
the parking lot and go inside andcavort like you usually do in there,
because all your peeps are in there. But how are you gonna explain that
(02:32):
to mamma tonight? You were thereevery night last week. Still, you
know that when your car gets tothat driveway, you're gonna pull right on
in because it's your place. Man. She's just gonna have to understand.
It's your place, your kind ofplace, a place where they know you,
(02:55):
you know them, A place wherewhere you can go inside and take
the edge off a little bit. It's a place where the lights are dim,
the music swings, but it's nevertoo loud, and you don't even
have to tell them to make ita double. It's a place where the
(03:15):
skirts are tight and the necklines plunge. Now you may think they're in no
place like that, can't be,can't be, but there is, sure
enough, it's the Sunset Lounge.Go on, step inside the green door,
(03:39):
have us set at the bar, listen to the great sounds of blue
Coben and the cobras, and getin the groove at the Sunset Lounge with
the speakeasy on ninety seven to one. The freak all run a few rangers.
(04:00):
Things like to shout out Sean McFarlandat the Dallas Morning News, that
boy does some excellent work, ashe has provided us with some things.
One of them was his three observationsfrom spring training, and I'm only going
to focus on two of them becausei think that they are the most important
ones. Number one is something thathas bared our eyeballs. We needed to
(04:29):
keep a sharp eye or a wontguy on okay is Evan Carter when he's
playing baseball against left handed pitchers, because Evan Carter against left handed pitchers is
a rookie last year, which isweird to say because he'll also be a
rookie this year because he didn't playenough to not be a rookie and he's
still rookie. He was one foreighteen against lefties, which is in a
(04:51):
huge sample size, but they intentionallytried to protect him from that because he
has had his struggles with lefties,as they will do. And so how
has he done this spring when they'relike, we ain't hiding him in the
spring, we want reps, wewant to work at this. Well,
the answer to how he has doneis, I need to know who he
(05:14):
faced in his second at bat todayin their spring training game, because he
has two hits today and I knowat least one of them was off of
a lefty. And before this game, he was three for twelve against lefties,
which is two fifty, which ifhe could do that against lefties,
sign me up. But it's possiblethat he's now five for fourteen or five
for fifteen against lefties. So hemay be batting over three hundred in spring
(05:36):
against the left handed men, andit's spring. It's spring. Doesn't mean
you would get that same result againsta regular season pitcher. Doesn't mean that
each pitcher that was left handed thathe was up against was doing everything he
could to get him out. Mighthave just been working on whatever they're working
on to get ready for the season. I don't know that, but I
will take my encouragement where I canget it. With the chosen one,
(05:59):
our little save year, very encouraging. We like it. Yeah, that's
quite good. Yeah, he's closeto being perfect. He is near perfect.
If nothing else, it's a confidencebuilder. It's such a bad thing.
He might bet five hundred this year, a new a new record.
(06:21):
Yeah, i'd take that. I'llsettle for four hundred, but the goal
will take that. Ted Williams thelast guy sometime around World War two,
and he hit four oh six.Yep. There have been a few guys
who have come close. I knowRod Carew came close one year. If
(06:43):
I remember right in ninety four whenthey had the strike, was that George
Brett still going and like somebody wasat three eighty eight or three ninety in
the strike shortened season. It mighthave been Tony Gwynn. I know,
so Tony Gwinn had a really highbatting average that year two nineteen ninety four.
(07:04):
But yeah, I seem to rememberGeorge Brett at three eighty eight or
something like that. Yeah, becauseI think I remember one of those two
numbers, three eighty eight or threeninety. I'd love to have a four
hundred hitter again. That'd be hot, man. It's hard to do.
Gwinn was at three ninety four.We were robbed. He could have made
(07:26):
a run at it. It ishard to do. Matt Williams had forty
three Bombskis Griff he had forty. We could have had some really fun things
happened that year baseball, but noBaseball screwed it up. Greg Maddicks had
a one fifty six era. That'sthe speakeasy Easy's own Greg Maddocks. Yeah,
go check the podcast. Wherever youlisten to podcasts, you can find
(07:48):
the speakes in ninety seven one inthe Frequent Podcast every segment you could find
our Greg Maddicks interview. Next closestdra to Greg Maddox's one five six was
Brett Saberhagen's two seven four, Soone point two behind Yes, one full
run and then some and then somebehind him. A notable thing number two
(08:11):
from Sean McFarland in the Dallas MorningNews. Let me not get my two
Ranger articles confused. Here is somebodywho's gonna really matter for this thing.
I still hope they signed Jordan Montgomeryat some point and until he signed somewhere
else. I'm not giving up hope. I like it, But at the
moment, your fifth starter is CodyBradford, and your sixth starter does not
(08:31):
exist. Day to ten of themexist. I don't hate Cody Bradford.
I don't know why the guy hasnot done more than he's done. But
every time I see him, Ilook at his pitches and go, okay,
I don't play almost all of themwill. And I don't know what's
(08:54):
been holding him back or why hehadn't gotten any better results than he's gotten,
But boy, it looks like likethe right stuff is there. Spring
has been good for Cody Bradford sofar. He on Sunday pitched for five
innings and he gave up one run. And that was the guy who reached
(09:16):
third and then scored that shouldn't countasn earn run. He reached third on
a dropped ball because the sun wasin whit at Langford's eyes and left field.
Yeah, but Cody Bradford gave upone run on five hits and five
innings. He struck out two hisera and eleven innings so far, and
Cactus League is a tidy little twofour five, So it's nice early returns
(09:43):
on your fifth starter. Pretty good, pretty good. Yeah, he's trying
to prove that they don't need somebodyelse. We're just just sitting right there.
Still need somebody else when somebody goesher, Yeah, that's true.
Or two somebody's for three somebodies.By the way, Two one four seven,
eight seven one nine seven one isa phone number that you're gonna need
(10:05):
in seven or eight minutes for thetwo minute drill, as we are gonna
throw g money in the f andfire and see if he can handle the
heat of five ringing phone lines constantlypow pow, pow, pow pow.
So if you want to be apart of the show just a few minutes,
you'll want the number two one fourseven, eight seven one nine seven
(10:26):
to one. And then sometimes whatI like to do in my baseball world
before it's actually baseball time, isjust in my brain try to come up
with what does my lineup look like? And someone smarter than me in baseball,
there's only like seven of them onEarth. Mike Riners one of them,
and my friend Jared Sandler's one ofthem. And so he did a
(10:48):
whole video of putting together what hethinks would be his Rangers lineup, and
this may very well be what theRangers lineup looks like. And tell me
how fun it's going to be towatch them smash the baseball. He does
note when we're building the lineup,it's important to consider one through nine,
all nine guys fitting together, andone through nine all nine innings. So
(11:11):
because of that, you don't wantto have a whole bunch of righty,
righty, lefty left e right wherethey could just put in a pitcher that
throws with the proper hand and mowyou down and feel like it's no problem.
You want to go back and forthas much as you can. Here's
the lineup. He would choose whichall right, name on one by one,
(11:31):
and I'll tell you if I dothat I do. We are going
to have to spit ball this alittle bit because there's one guy that I
want higher, but I don't know. Okay, Marcus Simeon one, Yes,
good, Yes, Corey Seeger two. Okay, it's the modern baseball.
(11:52):
We don't buy the best guys. And fourth we got him second or
first, I know, and I'mI'm totally fine with that. I was
thinking of somebody else, but yeah, that's the better play. I know
who you were thinking of. Yeah, me too. Let me see if
there's a way I can do that. I'll think about it in a minute.
Wyatt Lankford three hole. That wouldbe righty, lefty, righty okay,
(12:18):
Wyatt Lankford, Okay, who hasnot played Major League Baseball yet?
Three hole. I'm getting tickled bythis. Yes, I was like,
I want to do a whole segmentjust on the fact that somebody in the
know thinks that Wyatt should be inthe three hole, number four of Dolease
Garcia nice? Naturally that's right left, right right, which means we've got
(12:45):
to get back to left. EvanCarter. That what I would do.
Batting fifth, That's what I woulddo, righty, lefty, righty,
righty lefty Josh Young and the sixthhole righty, lefty, righty, righty,
lefty, righty switch hitter Jonah himthat seventh All Star Silver Slugger last
(13:09):
year. I think so betting inthe seventh hole, in the eighth hole
Nathaniel Lowe and betting ninth is LeotiTavers. That's an f and lineup.
It's beautiful that's that. That isgood. That is so good. That
(13:30):
is very good. And I wantto figure out a way to have Evan
Carter in my top three, butit would require some tinkering. But I
mean, I'm playing fantasy baseball andI don't have to care who the leader
of the team is or how anybodyfeels. I could just pretend that I
could do whatever I want. I'mtrying to figure out, could I move
Simon down? But that's alrighty movingdown and I'm moving a lefty. No,
(13:52):
no, no, you gotta haveMarcus hitting the leadoff, see,
because that's a baseball man. He'sworried about the team and the veteran leadership
and all the things. I thinkI care about it on base percentage.
I think in the minds of allthose guys in the room and the minds
of the fans, Marcus leading offis kind of a metaphor for what happened
last year. Having metaphors, wecould go Lankford. You do have to
(14:18):
make them fit together, because I'mthinking, could I go like Wyatt Evan
Seeger. I'm just trying to putthe babies. Evan and I don't want
to be outside the top four.We don't want to, but we're too
good to be anywhere else. Ifyou want to balance out righty's and lefties,
(14:39):
which is important, yeah it is. You ran, we go left?
You ready right now? We can'teither way. That's a good lineup.
That's a good lineup. That lineupwill get some things done. It
will, it'll do some things. The Rangers aren't fifteen to five on the
Angels right now. Carter two forthree plus a walk, with two driven
(15:03):
in and two scored. Whyatt Langfordtwo for three plus a walk, four
runs scored and an RBI and ZekeDuran with a little little home run?
Did he hit a bombski? Yeahhe do? Okay, I don't have
the home run skies. Oh Ido? If I scroll down, Yeah,
he's got the home run ski yep. I put him up eight to
(15:26):
three at the time. Why it'sgot a double we're cruising. Look at
why Ittt's got nine rbi this spring, Evans got seven. Just ready to
crush everybody if we can pitch itall. Havaldi four and two thirds of
no run baseball, though he didwalk four people. Get it together,
(15:46):
bro, So that's good. WhyattLangford for the spring, that's before including
this game that they're playing right now. Valdi is Sean McFarland's guy who looks
most ready for opening date. Hellyeah, of course he does. He's
a professional, always ready. He'sa professional man. I'm sorry to interrupt
there. Well, no, becauseI was going to tell you about the
(16:07):
guy who has is his hottest atthe plate, and the numbers are even
higher than what it says here. But it's why at Langford is the guy
who says is the hottest at theplate in spring training. He is the
number six prospect in baseball according toMLB pipeline. I think Evan Carter's number
five, and he currently is hittingthree sixty in spring His on base percentage
(16:29):
is five forty two. The SLUGOis eight forty, So that ops adds
up to twelve hundred. Oh no, no, no, it's opis exactly
yeah, thirteen eighty two. Iwas doing his batting average, uh,
and that is without today's game inthere, So he's batting higher than three
sixty and his slugging is higher thaneight forty eight. I don't know if
(17:03):
we're gonna how do we keep gettingbetter? Don't well? I don't know
how we're going to be pitching thebaseball, but we're gonna smash it.
We are the Mavericks, but witha recent championship, is what Boaj says
about Langford. He's gonna smash it. He can hit. We know that.
It's just a matter of putting himout there every two three days and
(17:26):
giving him as a bats two threedays my ass. Just to tamp down
expectations, that's all. And theymay do a let's expectations down. He's
alrighty and so on days where you'reagain, well, I guess alrighty doesn't
matter. But I guess on somerighty days, maybe what hand does Zeke
(17:48):
bat with? You may do athing where he's out there in the most
favorable matchups you can find, andyou're doing things that way, which is
fine. But man, I thinkhe's gonna do what having did, which
is like, yeah, sure, you brought me up here to play some
of the games. I'm better thanwhoever else you're gonna put out there,
and you're gonna have to play me. They had to move Evan Carter into
(18:10):
the top of the lineup and playoffbaseball as a rookie because he played in
a way that you had to.And I think that, and I think
why Ittt's gonna do the same thing. They're gonna tamp it down as much
as they can, and he's gonnabe batting three point fifty and they're gonna
be like kry. I need toput him in a little more and a
little more and a little more, until you've just got Wyatt out there kicking
(18:37):
ass and taking names. I don'tcare if the Cowboys don't sign anybody ever,
which they haven't. You're keeping scoreat home NFL free agency. A
lot of teams signing players. Cowboysare not, which is what they do.
Check they're letting people go away.Tony Pollard is a Tennessee Titan.
(18:59):
Dorn's arm Strong and Tyler Battish orWashington commanders. And I think we're up
to date there for starters who areleaving the Cowboys at this point. Well,
Dorn's in the startbucks. So youjust kept us up to date.
Huh yeah, and then wait forit, We're going to keep it moving.
Oh yeah. It two one fourseven eight seven one one is a
(19:22):
phone number that you need now ifyou'd like to be a part of our
radio broadcast Maverick's pregame coming up atsix point thirty, tip off at seven
right here on your home of themass. But if you want to be
a part of this show right now, Michael tell you how. It's called
the two minute drill. This isthe way you get thirty seconds or until
(19:44):
we determine that your story has becometiresome, whichever happens. First, start
whatever you have to say with thewords I think that be ready to go
when we come to you, turnyour radio down, don't ask us how
we we are. Expect nothing fromus by way of response or reply.
Head here to these six simple edicts, and this can go wherever you like.
(20:11):
Okay, just waiting for it toload up. Yeah, hang on
for a for a second. Oh, it's gonna load. It'll happen.
Just let me know when you're youready, it's gonna load. All right,
let's do this thing. Hit you'reon the two minute drill, go.
I think fifty combined lovability of thespeakeasy funds. If y'all were lined
up hip to hip, you'd beas delicious as a pack of kings Hawaiian
(20:33):
rolls. I need a minute pulledon the music. Now, you're on
the two minute drill go. Ithink that I'm gonna say something on the
radio. Something on the radio. You pulled it off. You're on the
two minute drill go. I thinkthat Mike basic Fun got told by me
(20:55):
all year coachal fresh and basketball bycalling the name of every Mile League team
back to play four and then ittop that off for the final called the
team. Uh, what's that ballparkOracle? No, not oracle but Kobe
Cove. Yeah, that's the dayof our final play the way end the
(21:17):
season. That's it. The storiesbecome tiresome blinkers on. You're on the
too min a drill go. Ithink that with a full year of Evan
Carter and the addition of why Lankord, that number one offense that fizzled out
after two months is going to keepus going straight until we run it all
the way back. Maybe you're onthe two in a drill go. You're
(21:44):
on the too many drill go.You're on the two minute drill go.
You're on the two min a drillgo. I think that I'm sitting in
chocolate pudding. Never trust the part. You're on the two men and drill
go you're on the two men anddrill go. I think that the Cowboys
(22:11):
should get rid of Deck and somehowinvest everything they can on the defense.
With all the defensive free agents thisyear, it's gospel. You're on the
two men and drill go. Youguys, you're on the too many drill
go. That's you. That wasyou until we're getting today. Yeah.
(22:44):
I think that it was a goodshow and we shouldn't let this get us
down. We won't. I thinkthat we should carry all of the positive
energy from the not caller yes, which is us, and go with that.
I think we should leave here knowingthat we did keep everybody up to
date and we kept it moving.Yeah, yeah, we did that.
Yeah, that's it for today. We thank you very much for your time
(23:07):
and attention this afternoon. Thanks toGarrett over there. Nice work as always.
Now, do stay tuned because onthe way we got a lot of
great stuff coming up for you tonighton the Freak we got a little Mavericks
basketball here, the Mavericks against theChicago Bulls, and who knows, maybe
the news junkies will even be workedin there somewhere. Hell I don't know,
(23:30):
but anyway, just listen to theFreak as often as you possibly can.
That's all we need you to do. We're back tomorrow at two with
another edition of The Speakeasy. Untilthen, Jeff, remember you have no
idea what anyone's going through, sobe cool to everyone. We love you.

(24:17):

good show, love you, Byebye, Keep living, Bubba,
