(00:11):
We are hitting that four o'clock hourhere now. As we mentioned at the
outset, it is gonna be alittle bit short today because we've gotta make
way for Mavericks basketball. They arein that Eastern time zone, and frequently
when they are in that Eastern timezone, they cut into the speakeasy time
(00:32):
zone, and such will be thecase today as we get the great Kevin
Gray in here to get you readyfor the Mavericks game with Charlotte tonight.
So whoop them stand by for that. It was a very tough night for
the Texas Baseball Rangers last night. And I don't want to throw a party
(00:53):
on the high of the of theevents of yesterday or what the Mavericks are
doing or what the Stars are doing, but sometimes stuff just doesn't go your
way in these games. They gotout of this series without facing from ber
Valdez, the series with the Astroswe're talking about. They got out of
(01:15):
there with that Fromber had to missthat his start, which I believe was
scheduled for last night and he couldn'tgo. And I believe with them with
him, they said elbow, Yeah, elbow is the scariest thing I can
hear about a picture. Shoulder's notgood. Elbow scares me more. Yeah,
elbow means oh, it's a littlebit more of a clear and present
(01:38):
threat than the shoulder. But onceagain, it was just a case of
not being able to get the rightguy that get the guys out and get
outs when you needed him. Androck Burke bears thet of this because he
(02:00):
had another really tough outing last night. And that's too bad because two years
ago, I know the thing wasno good then and nobody was watching,
but rock Berg was the best pitcherthey had when he was coming out of
the bullpen usually to get a toughleft hander out. He was pretty damn
reliable and it looked to me likethey had a guy that they could count
(02:23):
on. Now, last year wasnot so good for him, but you
know, not so bad that youabsolutely could not see the possibility of a
bounce back. Well, that bounceback is not taking shape because last night
he came into the game did notget an out. He was terrible last
night. Irena kind of made upfor it a little bit because he's a
(02:46):
guy that you know, nobody knowstoo much about, nobody's paying any attention
to, and when he's come intothe games, he's usually gotten the job
done. And last night he wascalled up on to do a little bit
of heavy lifting. He gave himfour innings and that they were four pretty
still in too, there was nothingwrong with that. Yeah, where's he
been? I need to see becauseit's like he doesn't even show stats for
(03:07):
twenty twenty two, twenty twenty three, multiple teams each year, and when
he's taking the ball for the Rangerslook pretty darn good. Yeah, And
it could be that, you know, teams haven't seen him yet. He's
not been really well scouted and nobody'spaying much attention to him because he's kind
of the last guy out of theRangers' bullpen, the patron scene of lost
causes out there. But that look, I mean, put away what these
(03:35):
statistics tell you. Happened to thegame and just judge by what you saw,
and he was making quality pitches. So that's something good to come out
of that. Also, Justin Foscuegot his first major league hit I believe
this the night before last and thenalmost immediately hit the injured list. Yeah,
(03:59):
yeah, a moment, and thenthe next morning we're told and he's
hurt. Yeah, So and he'snot supposed to be here. He's here
because other people are hurt. Right. He gave you a little hope,
a little glimpse, and then he'shurt. Bet. Meanwhile, Josh Young
is going to hit the sixty dayinjured list, so you can forget about
(04:21):
him for two months, maybe evenmore than that. So all right,
go Ranger. That's really it wasreally kind of a bummer situation. I
hated that game last night because theRangers got out ahead, and I thought
that they might be able to bounceback from losing Sunday and get out of
(04:41):
this thing with a series win.But my last twas not to be.
It just didn't happen. I dohave one. I suppose it's a positives
Ranger nugget, but I I don'tknow. I mean, I guess it's
just maybe where he's supposed to be. But I read it and went,
oh cool. Jacob de Gram didtake another step on Monday and his recovery
(05:09):
from his Tommy John surgery. That'sgood, post Eclips News. Jacob de
Gram and his workouts backed up fifteenfeet and he is now throwing from ninety
feet right, and he doesn't evenhave to throw ninety feet. No,
from the mound, he only hasto throw sixty yeah, in six inches.
This is standing out there somewhere betweenthe mound and second base. Yeah,
(05:30):
so he's why is he doing that? Throwing the ball for long tosses?
Okay, t do a little lengthon the throws. You know,
the same reason guys swing weighted batsin the on deck circle to make the
real things seem a little less Okay. And then we got an update.
I want him to hurt himself again. We got an update on Nate Low
too, and God, I thoughtthis was going to be quicker. I
(05:54):
guess he's expected to take live battingpractice over the next two days before the
Rangers consider the next steps in hisrehab, and Bruce Bochie said he thought
Low might need about thirty to fortyrehab at bats before he's ready to turn
or to return. Thirty to fortyrehabit bats is ten games quite a few.
(06:17):
That is quite a few. Imean, if they keep winning series
and splitting series, I guess it'snot a big deal. But he is
saying goes the way. I thinkit's possible this thing might start going.
We need to get out on thefield, boys, man. The other
thing is Jared Wallash has not donea bad job at all. Yeah in
his stead, Yeah, you've hadsome capable fill in there. Yeah,
(06:38):
he's done good work and the bestdam of sports segment period. I would
like to transition now, okay toa quick Dallas Cowboys conversation right after I
reward one of our loyal listeners. If you're out there and you're a Paton
Oswalt fan, I'm looking for you. I am looking for you, and
(06:58):
I'm looking hard. He's a talkbackfeature on the iHeartRadio app, and the
first one of you that says,Hi, I sure would like to see
Patton Oswalt on May the third atthe Majestic Theater. Grooves will get your
squared away. He just need yourname, phone number, email address in
that talkback. Now, are yougoing to hold them to exactly that script?
(07:19):
No, but be in the ballpark, all right? Say it again,
Hi, I sure would like tosee Patton Oswalt May third at the
Majestic Theater. I don't think that'stoo much task. We'll find out,
but let's shoot you figure it out. Yeah, we'll find out. We'll
(07:42):
see what a tough critic he canbe so quick, Dallas Cowboys thing for
you as we build towards the NFLDraft, which I'm getting pretty clue.
April twenty five, that's sixteen daysaway. Oh wow, two weeks and
(08:03):
two days away from the NFL Draft. And today our friend Calvin Watkins in
the Morning News has just been doinga generic sounds like a negative word,
but going position by position, andeach each day you'll post one up in
(08:24):
the Dallas Morning News, like youalways look forward to that every year.
Right, you combine them all andyou can see, okay, here's all
the things we need. So todayit was defensive tackle. And we've talked
about these things, but I thinkit's worth noting them. Cowboys are a
big story. The draft is abig thing, and the Cowboys are in
a unique spot where they need morethan they've needed in any recent year I
can think of. They need alot of things. They need guys,
(08:48):
they and they don't and they needguys. Yeah, not they need guys.
No. I tried. I triedto capitalize that capitol G because there's
a difference, right, they needwar daddies. If your team had like
you're like, okay, my startinglinebackers are good. I sure could use
(09:11):
a guy that could make the teamon special teams that we could develop like
that'd be nice like that. That'sif you need a guy. But when
you look around and you go,for instance, defensive tackle, as he
lays out today, you have osaOdiggy Zoowa who's going into a contract year,
and it's a nice player. He'sa nice young player, he is.
(09:31):
You have Mazzie Smith, who waslast year's first round pick that severely
underperformed what they hoped he would andunderwent a shoulder surgery recently and probably won't
be ready to do anything until trainingcamp. And at this point you would
have to look at that and say, he's just this side of being a
bust. He's on bustwatch. It'searly, the surgery hurts, it's early.
(09:54):
And one of the things about rookiesin the NFL, this is a
mostly true statement, the closer youline up to the football, the harder
the transition is from college to theNFL. Defensive tackles a lot of times
take a little bit to develop, because you know, if you're a really
(10:18):
good Hey, we could go backto the National Championship Game last night,
Zach Eaedy for Purdue is seven footfour and against a bunch of college guys,
they toss him the ball, hecatches it, he turns to his
left and he does a little hookshot and he goes in the basket,
and you go, congrats, youare the player of the year. Put
him in the NBA and he can'tplay defense, and he can't bully the
NBA people and they swat his shotand he can only turn to his right
and make a lap. You can'tplay in the league if you're a defensive
(10:41):
tackling college that kicks ass. You'rebigger and stronger than the guys you're going
against, who the vast majority ofthem aren't going to play NFL football.
Then you show up and you go, haha, I'm bigger and stronger,
and Sack Martin goes my ass, kid, and you go, oh,
okay, I got to figure outhow to be a pro. How can
if I am your size and strengthor even a little bit more, but
(11:05):
I don't really know what I'm doing. You got to figure that out.
And so for Mazzie Smith, he'sgot to figure that out, and he's
gonna have to do it after herecovers from his shoulder surgery, So that's
that's a tough spot. They dohave one other defensive tackle on the roster.
His name is Carl Davis. Don'tworry about it. He's a journeyman
(11:26):
who the last three years he's thirtytwo years old. In the last three
years he basically plays a couple ofsnaps sometimes in some games, and a
lot of times he doesn't play,so not a factor. So that's a
really big need for the Cowboys. You said, yea journeyman, yes,
and that's it, and that's it. Oh wow. Technically they have Chauncey
(11:48):
Golston who's an end, plays sometackle, but too small to be a
tackle, not really athletic enough tobe a guy that can pass rush at
end. So he's like a tweenerthat can play some snaps whatever, but
not the sort of thing they're lookingfor. They're looking for, can we
stop the run? And when youmove an end to tackle, he ain't
stopping the run. Yeah, Soit's a pretty big need. And it
(12:09):
just takes me back to what's kindof in the point of the off season
for the Cowboys, which drives mebonkers, is that they're not trying their
hardest and that's interesting, like theirprimary goal this offseason appears to be so
far twenty five and twenty twenty six, which is a weird thing to do
(12:33):
with a head coach in the lastyear of his deal and a quarterback in
the last year of his deal tonot do something and I request one thing
from them, just one. Butthey appear to be obsessed with all the
bad contracts they've signed, all thepeople whose moneies they've pushed back, and
they're on the precipice of eating allthat money. Some of it they've been
(12:56):
eating Zeke money they're still paying.Hope they at least wash it. Yeah,
they'll wash it and then they'll eatit. And they peer obsessed with
that because every year what we hearabout from the Cowboys is and it's just
a blip on the radar that nobodycares because salary cap stuff, nobody cares.
It's minutia to most sports fans. You're like, no, tell me
about what we're gonna do in thefootball game. But every year you'll have
(13:18):
five or six guys where it's likerestructure, restructure, restructure, And what
that does is that moves their moneyto later so that we can have guys
now, because we're trying to win, and that's what every team does.
This year, I think there's asuper obvious candidate to do that with.
And every year, every obvious candidatethey do it with. And some guys
that you'd be like, wow,you might want to get rid of him
(13:39):
soon. That's gonna hurt later. You shouldn't do that. They'll do those
ones too. This year. Ijust wanted them to do the super obvious
one, and that's Trayvon Diggs.Do you believe that Trayvon Diggs is going
to be here in three years, two years, three years and be a
good football player? Yeah? Ido too. Those are the guys who
you go, Okay, move thatmoney and we'll figure it out. Yeah.
(14:01):
And they could have done that, and they could have had eight million
dollars to spend. So like rightnow they have seven million dollars to spend.
That could have been eight more. Now I have fifteen million dollars to
spend. What could I do withfifteen million dollars? Well, the Cowboys
right now, we just talked aboutdefensive tackle. They need one and not
they need anybody who could maybe makea roster. They need somebody who can
(14:24):
play NFL football for real. Theyneed a top three in their rotation defensive
tackle, they need it, Andthey need a starting running back, a
starting left tackle, a starting center, and they need guys who can play
NFL football at linebacker, defensive end, and corner. And they don't really
(14:48):
have a third starting wide receiver. There's a lot of things, and when
you're two weeks and two days fromdrafting, I could feel way better about
this thing. That's a lot, man, if they had just done what
they do every off season with fivepeople, with just one guy that will
be here and I think will bea good player. So it's not like
(15:09):
it's a high risk thing. Youcould take that money and Tyron Smith could
be on this team and Jonathan Hankinscould be on this team. Now we're
not worried about defensive tackle. We'renot worried about a starting left tackle.
I've scratched two. But instead theCowboys are about to go into an NFL
draft with three picks at most thatyou can realistically hope in a good scenario
(15:35):
you can hit on. So wegot three picks, and I need a
left tackle, a center, adefensive tackle who plays not that's on the
team, a linebacker who plays,a wide receiver who plays a defensive end
who's in my top four or five, a corner who's in my top four.
I need seven things and I gotthree picks. Sounds like a problem.
(15:58):
They're it's a weird offseason, likethat's that's something you do when you're
rebuilding as you go. This isa step back here. But you can't
have a step back here when youhave Dak Prescott, Michaeh Parsons, Ceedee
Lamb, Tank, Lawrence Trayvon Diggs, Deron Bland, Zach Martin. You
can't. You're in the hunt towin the NFC East. And I don't
(16:23):
know if you're the favorite today, but if not, your neck and neck
with Philly like you are every year. And they're just doing the most conservative
stuff I've ever seen them do,and they're always somewhat conservative. But the
fact that you haven't just signed arandom three million dollar player at defensive tackle,
ore linebacker or corner or filly runningback. Oh yeah, then you're
(16:48):
starting running back. I saw thesome headlines about Zeke maybe coming back,
which would not be anything. Ifeel like then just be a nothing.
I think that would be the mostJerry Jones answer to this offseason ever,
because fans look, because the numberthe number of fans that would go hell
(17:10):
yeah, because the number of bigtime fans who pay a lot of attention
that tell me when I do YouTubestuff. We missed Zeke. I'm like
what, because we talked to it. You might have been out because the
story was that there's mutual interest betweenZeke and the Cowboys. Yeah, because
the Cowboys liked how he looked inthe last five weeks when he was the
(17:32):
lead running back in New England. And the last five weeks he average less
than three yards of carry. Youaverage less than three yards of carry and
I don't know your name. Younever play in the NFL again. Yeah,
and they're pretending that there's something goodabout it. How do you like
the way somebody that averages three yardsof carry looks? I don't know,
because because you don't know what andyour Jerry, you know what. I
(17:56):
still bet it happens. If hecomes, that's fine, but you can't
on him to be the number one. You can't. But it's it's a
very cowboy way. Yes, I'mpacifying the masses. Yeah, And it
doesn't because I don't think it computesto a lot of the fan base.
The sentence I'm about to say,Rico Daudele is better than Ezekiel Elliott.
(18:18):
He's better, but you've never heardof him. He's never rushed for a
thousand yards. He's better than Zeke. Whoever you draft in the third round
will be better than Zeke today. He's done. But we don't do that.
We hold on to where they weredrafted and how good they were once
upon a time, and we pretendthat it can be that way again.
It's like, Zeke's gonna get here, He's gonna fix our short yardage,
(18:40):
and Tony Poller didn't score on hisgoal line carries, and I'm like,
yes, you're right, I wouldlike someone better at that. Guess who
wasn't last year the guy you want. Stop worrying about him. Just bring
him on and give him some madeup role with the staff. That's what
they need to do. I've beensaying this since last season, assistant running
coach Zeke Elliott. Yes, runningback quality control. So anyway, I
(19:04):
was thinking about that when I waslooking at a defensive tackle because I'm like,
Okay, I know what they're gonnado. With their first three picks.
The first three picks are gonna besome combination of offensive line, running
back, linebacker, offensive line.Like it might be two offensive line and
a running back. It might beoffensive line, linebacker, running back.
There's a chance you could throw awide receiver in that mix. But there's
(19:29):
seven things that I need and I'mgonna get three, and the odds are
all three of those aren't even gonnahit. And it's just weird that they're
not trying their best, that's all. It's just weird. That's my question.
After every sporting event, did youDid you try your best? That's
all I want to know. Didyou try? Just wondering if people are
gonna notice? And the answer forJerry and Steven is no, I did
(19:51):
not try my best. That's thebest damn sports segment period. Let's see
here coming up next. I sawhim farting around out there. If you
want to stay up to date andkeep it moving, mister Dallas will help
you out. He'll do that next
