(00:23):
It's too speakeasy. On ninety sevenone the freak, I what to go?
Do you want to get down?Tell me what to gonna do you
want to get down? Do youwant to get out? All right,
(00:43):
it's two thirty four, you wantto get at that's the time. That's
what radio people do. They tellyou what time it is, even though
you have an infinite number of waysof finding out for yourself. But I
and that old school way of mindlike to think that I'm still providing some
kind of service, even though intellectuallyI know I'm not. I know I'm
(01:08):
not giving you anything that you couldn'tand haven't gotten anywhere else, possibly in
the last of the previous ten secondsbefore that started. But that's just the
way I roll, so like itor lumping man. All right, we
got the bucket of crap coming uphere with Jeff. We do just a
(01:30):
little bit three point thirty five. We'll have Hollywood swinging. But we cannot
start the proceedings without this. Look. It's Julie and she appears to be
a sports desk. Hi. Iam Julie, and I am a sports
desk. Hello, just kidding.I'm actually a very good sports desk.
Thank you. I'm actually a person. But I am sitting at my sports
(01:53):
desk today and we got a lotof sports to get to on my sports
desk. And let's start with DallasStars. We were talking about the Stars
game a little bit here off thetop of the show, but it was
game one in the first round ofthe NHL playoffs for the Dallas Stars,
who finished the regular season as WesternConference Champions Central Division Champions. They are
(02:19):
the team to beat in the playoffs. If not the team to beat,
they're one of the top few teamsto beat in the playoffs, and they
got a very tough draw in theirfirst round, as they will be facing
off with the reigning Stanley Cup champs, the Las Vegas Golden Knights in Game
one went down last night at theAmerican Airlines Center, and it was a
(02:43):
really good game. Stars ended uplosing four to three to go down one
game in the seven game series, and we talked about it a little bit
at the beginning. The Vegas teamis a little bit of a it's a
little bit of a I don't know, they're tricky because the team that the
(03:04):
Stars have seen this season so farand the team that everybody's seen from Las
Vegas is different than what they're puttingout there for the playoffs. Because they
had a couple of big players intheir lineup miss a lot of time with
injury, like all of them.It sounded like, yeah, Like I
was watching the beginning of that gameand it was like an Icle missed a
bunch of games, and Hurdle misseda bunch of games, and mark Stone
(03:25):
missed a bunch of games, andI was just like, wait, so
all their best players missed a bunchof games. That's why they're the eight
seed. And now they're all hereand that's what we get is the eighth
staate. Yeah. In fact, mark Stone was back just last night from
missing games. He was bored immediately. So yeah, that, yeah,
that's how the game started off.And Mark Stone's the captain. He's the
one that Jamie Ben smashed down tothe ground to start off the playoffs the
(03:50):
Western Conference finals with Las Vegas lastseason, and Jamie had to miss a
couple of games because of it.And I don't know if there's a lot
of hatred there between Jamie Ben andMark Stone, but the fans obviously really
dislike Mark Stone, as he wasgetting booed last night in the arena at
the AAC. And it's just reallytough when that guy who your captain has
(04:13):
beef with, who's the captain oftheir team, gets back into the lineup.
Yeah, he missed twenty six gamesof the season with a lacerated spleen.
Oh that sounds tough. Yeah, yeah, I mean that sounds internal.
It does. I mean, Ithink Romo played with one mister Stone,
But I mean, if you needa month and a half off,
that's fine. Oh wow, Soyou're saying Romo's tough for them? Oh
(04:35):
for sure, you kidding me.Comparently it's made of nails. Well,
and who knows, perhaps the spleenwas okay, and this was like,
well, he's kind of hurt andwe need to rest him so he's ready
to go for the playoffs, buthe missed twenty six games. And then,
yeah, he's the one that wasable to score the first goal Monday
night. Last night on a powerplay of all things. The Stars took
(04:58):
a bad penalty right out of thegates and Las Vegas was able to score.
And this happened just a minute andtwenty three seconds into the first period,
and then eight minutes in Las Vegaswas able to score another goal.
So it's two to zero, andman, that's just not how you want
to start your playoffs. It's verytough to come from behind in an NHL
(05:19):
game, and the Dallas Stars havemade a habit of doing that this season.
And it goes back to last season, maybe even the season before,
because I remember when I was watchingthese games very intently every single game because
my husband was on the coaching staff, which he no longer is. I
remember feeling like you almost had tospot the other team a goal because it
(05:40):
just became like that was the commonway for the Stars to start a game,
and that has carried over into thisseason. Now the Dallas Stars have
the most comeback wins of any teamin the NHL, I think twenty six
or something come from behind wins becausethey're giving up that dang goal so much
and you hate to see that happenearly on in game one of a series
(06:00):
like this, and then Las Vegaswhen they were able to make it two
to zero, it's just deflating.Jamie Ben after the game said, you
know, it kind of showed methat he still really dislikes Mark Stone.
Because Jamie Ben, if you've heardhim do an interview, you've heard him
do all of his interviews, they'repretty much the same, and he doesn't
(06:23):
give you much. Yeah, andsomeone asked specifically about giving up that goal
early on, he said, whocares? Who cares? We had a
lot of time and that's no excuse. But for him to even get say
who cares, it was almost likehe was very defensive about mark Stone scoring
early on in the game, andI kind of liked to see that from
him. It obviously pissed him off, but it basically was too much for
(06:45):
the Stars to overcome. They foughtback. Jamie Ben, with that beautiful
goal, was able to make ittwo to one on a breakaway off a
pass from Wyatt Johnston and then Hurdlethough added some separation for Las Vegas,
making it three to one on anotherpower play goal. So already the Stars
have given up two power play goals. So then you start getting your head
about special teams and your penalty killand it's just not a good start against
(07:10):
a really good team like that. The Stars were able to tighten it up,
make it three to two on anice play from Stankovin to Jason Robertson
just after that Hurdle goal about aminute later, and so it was a
very fiery, back and forth, violence kind of start to the game,
(07:30):
very heated. But then the finalforty minutes of the game, Las Vegas
just had seven shots on goal, but one of them was a toughie that
came from Braden McNabb. Was kindof one of those shots through the crowd
where you just throw the puck towardsthe net and see what happens, and
it went in. Jake Ottinger finishingwith eleven saves on fifteen shots. Silly
(07:51):
took fifteen shots. They only tookfifteen shots. And when you look at
the stats for this game, likethe Dallas Stars were on nine positive end
of all of these stats, theyoutshot Las Vegas thirty to fifteen. Face
offs, they won thirty three totwenty seven. They had more or no,
it looks like Las Vegas had morehits and block shots. So they
(08:13):
were playing a little bit feist year. You could say the Stars power player
for two, las Vegas two fortwo. Oh, so there's your difference.
There's your difference that's got to changeand all game right there. Yeah,
it really is. And you justexpect more from this Dallas Stars team,
especially on special teams, with allof the players, all of the
(08:35):
guys who have been leading the wayfor them offensively all season long. But
like I said, when you getdown one zero and then two zero early
on in a game like this, that's tough. As they say in hockey,
that's when you start playing on yourheels instead of playing on your toes.
And it's probably a little similar tolike what we saw from the Dallas
Mavericks. You get down and it'sharder to play your style of game,
(08:58):
and all of a sudden you're notthe AGGRESSI or the other team is,
and you just go back into ashell a little bit. And that's what
happened last night. Obviously, JakeGottinger has had better games, He's had
better playoff games, and he hadto answer some questions afterwards. The old
hockey question would you like to haveany of those goals back? Is basically
(09:20):
saying, oh, so, arethere any of these goals that you feel
really terrible about? And after lastnight, Jake Gottinger said, I'd like
to have all four of them back. So he's been like captain obvious there,
like if I'm playing this game whereI can pick which goals I get
to have back, how about allof them? And Pete de bar after
the game, he's him and JakeOttinger, I think had a little bit
(09:43):
of a issue earlier on in theseason when Jake Gottinger was kind of sliding
a bit, and Pete de Boersaid, you know, in his press
conferences, like we need more fromour goaltender, that kind of thing that
might have gotten in Jake's head. And after the game last night, de
Boor didn't say really anything like that. He just said we were chasing the
game the whole night. It's toughto play from behind against that team.
(10:05):
And I think that's the story ofthe game. But yeah, the Stars
finished with a thirty to fifteen advantagesand shots on goal sixty eight to forty
eight edge and shot attempts twice thequality scoring chances as Vegas, so they
were creating huh. But yeah, special teams was a problem last night.
But when you look at all ofthose stats, it's not like the Stars
(10:26):
were outmatched and you should feel terriblegoing into game two by any means.
This really was just kind of theway the puck bounced last night. The
Stars played really well and you canexpect that they will continue to do so
and hopefully get a game two victory. Feel very le going in the game
(10:46):
too, myself. Really, Yeah. I mean, if this were not
the Stanley Cup champion that we wereplaying and made that long playoff run and
knows what it takes to make thatlong playoff run and has got so many
other guys back this year, that'dbe one thing. But I fear these
guys. Yeah, I don't thinkthis is a good first round matchup for
(11:07):
the Stars at all. No,it's not, and it's not what they
were hoping for, and they weren'thoping to see them in the first round.
But then they're saying all the rightthings. If you want to be
the best, you got to meetthe best, You got to slay the
beast, and I would expect nothingmore from them. Get some revenge.
Yeah, I'm not saying that anyof that automatically means that Stars can't win
this thing. Because they can't.They can and in the series last year,
(11:31):
the playoff series with Minnesota and Seattle, they lost game one in both
of those series and came back andwon game two. All I'm saying is
there's a lot of reason to fearthis thing first. Yeah, yeah,
for sure. So the Stars willplay Game two tomorrow night back at the
American Airline Center. Another late start, eight thirty start, which is more
(11:54):
like an eight fifty start. Imean, I went to like a birthday
party thing, came home and thirdperiod it was starting. That's how late
this thing was on. And Ithink that's a little bit of a problem.
It's the Pete de Boris said, that's different for the guys. They
don't like playing that late. Itmesses with their routine, Fans don't like
it and everything else. But that'sjust the way it is in the playoffs,
(12:15):
and that's how it was last seasontoo. You know, everybody has
to do it at one time oranother. Yeah, except the West Coast
teams. They don't have to,right, that's right in their wheelhouse.
So I wasn't at the game.I know you were, Mike, And
just from watching the game, Ikept noticing like they were spelling playoffs,
Stars, playoffs, plaioffs and likehighlighting the AI. So I was like
(12:43):
trying to figure out, like,is there a whole AI vibe or is
that the whole Because the Dallas Starsgame presentation people do a really good job
in the playoffs of making it likea really cool atmosphere. Last year it
was like a video game thing thatthey did, so I guess this year
it's AI. And I looked itup a little bit and apparently this person
who they have in charge of marketingnow has been leaning on AI tools for
(13:07):
a lot of their marketing things. And basically it sounds like one of the
producers was kind of messing around withthis AI stuff, and she said,
one of our video producers was playingwith a couple of tools. He went
into the algorithm and typed in somethinglike hockey on the Moon, something that
was relevant to use and got somereally cool images to pop up from there,
(13:30):
and he was like, Wow,this is really cool to be able
to visualize it in this way.And it sounds like that's what they decided
to go with for their playoff vibe. Is like hockey on the moon kind
of thing and extraterrestrial stuff and AIkind of stuff, stars galaxies space with
hockey organically integrated into it. Sokind of cool. It looked really cool
(13:50):
on TV and from what I heard, I saw a lot of people commenting
on how great the game presentation waslast night. Was it so loud?
Yeah, it was really loud, and it was what you would expect from
the Stars. They do a wonderfuljob with that. Were you on the
Moon? I don't recall the moonbeing a particularly big player inside the arena.
(14:11):
There more ice and stuff. Yeah, But I mean you have to
understand when I go to a playoffgame, I'm there for the game and
not for the Moon happy Fizzies party. What the Happy Fizzy's party that surrounds
it the time? Yeah, thereis a lot of that. Yeah.
So the Dallas Stars will get rightback at it tomorrow night. We do
(14:35):
have more playoff hockey tonight, Washingtonat New York, the Caps at the
Rangers, New York leading that seriesone to zero. Lightning at the Panthers,
Florida leading that one one to zeroin that series. Avalanche and Jets
some Central Division foes playing each other, Winnipeg leading that series one to zero.
Good old Rick Bonus the head coachthere, he's up one zero in
(14:56):
the playoffs. And then the Predatorsand the Kana Vancouver has a one zero
lead in that series. And Iwill take a quick buzzer here. So
Dallas Mavericks, Waddy Ruff's going backto Buffalo. I did. Yeah,
that's crazy, and good for him. Yeah, good for him. He
(15:20):
loves it there. We had himon the show for a couple of years
when he was here. Yeah.Always like that guy anyway, carry out.
He has so many NHL lives asa coach. I mean to derail
you there, No, you're good. Obviously. The Dallas Mavericks trying to
figure out what went wrong in Gameone of their series with the Clippers a
couple of nights ago, where theybasically were not in the game from the
(15:43):
get go, and we're getting likesome quotes, you know, from the
Clippers and from the maps about howthey're kind of like sifting through that game
and what they think about it.Clippers head coach tylu said that one of
their goals was obviously Luca is thegiant focus for the Mavericks, but not
(16:06):
just scoring. He wanted to makesure that the Clippers kept his assist total
to a minimum, and that's somethingthat they were focusing on. He ended
up with thirty three points, thirteenrebounds, but only six assists, and
Lu said that was our game plancoming in. He said, our guys
did a good job picking up fullcourt, just giving Luca different looks,
trying to wear him down because he'sa great player, and it seemed to
(16:29):
work. Luca was just off tobegin that game, but kind of interesting
to hear something that they were focusingin on and something that they found success
with. Meanwhile, the Mavericks dofeel like, and this is coming from
Kyrie Irvin Irving, that their secondhalf play where they started to figure things
(16:52):
out after trailing fifty six to thirtyat halftime, in the second half,
they outscored LA sixty seven fifty three, and he feels like that is going
to carry over. They started tofigure some things out, he said,
we got stops. We were seeingsome tendencies from some of the guys on
their team. They were going opposite, really challenging us to guard those different
looks. But they started to pickup on some of those tendencies and started
(17:15):
to figure out how to defend them. And he said, in the first
half, he just there were someplays that they weren't prepared for, some
things that threw them off, andthey have to take accountability for that.
But yeah, he said, thesecond half, we picked up the physicality
and we started demanding greatness out ofourselves, not being afraid of the moment,
which to me, like that waswhat the obvious problem was. It
(17:37):
seemed like they were scared. Andwe talked about this little bit yesterday.
You weren't here, Jeff, soI don't know your thoughts on, you
know, what went wrong, butit looked like, especially you know,
with some of the young guys, and you had like Lively in his first
playoff game and he's a big partof this thing, it seemed like they
just weren't Luca and Kyrie were notgetting the support from the role players that
(17:59):
we had seen late in the season, and it did seem like they just
were maybe a little bit shell shockedfor whatever reason. Oh yeah, I
thought there's all sorts of things,But I think I would start with either
Luca or Jason Kidd, one ofthem, I don't know which one,
because they like they weren't ready. They were not ready to the level that
the Clippers were ready. Like theClippers came out of there like they were
(18:19):
running one hundred yard dash in theOlympics, and the MAVs came out like
they were running the marathon, likeall right, here we go. And
then by the time you've been hitin the mouth, it's like, oh
okay, it couldn't recover right,Like the second half was Maverick basketball.
But I don't think that they're goingto start a game like that. The
second half. Kyrie takes over, right, he shows up, he starts
a game, and Luca goes, and then later on Kyrie goes, and
(18:42):
that's kind of what they do.And in this game, it just felt
like I think Luca's first possession wasdribble around and then take a step back.
Yeah no, no, go attack, play basketball. Go We're in
the playoffs, And it just seemedlike they weren't ready to play and that's
kind of gross. But I thinkthat is out of your system. And
(19:03):
now you know, like, Okay, we're here, and I think they'll
win tonight. I think they'll befine, But that was a very uninspiring
start to a series because they didn'tlook like they were ready to play playoff
basketball. I think they'll win tonighttoo, but that was that that that
sounded a real alarm for me becauseI really didn't expect much of the Clippers.
(19:27):
Much out of the Clippers at allof this tournament. I mean,
to me, they are a bunchof their collection of big names with very
little chemistry. But then you gotthe big guy who shows up, went
right out went I mean, hedominated him in that first quarter and then
(19:48):
probably the first half. I mean, he was the different I think the
game was won there. And that'swhat the Mavericks weren't ready for the Clippers.
Identity is not bots. That's whatthey did. They're right at them.
Then get him in foul trouble andshow them you may not be ready.
Factor for the rest of the day. Yeah, and it sets kind
of a tone that we're going toplay down low, We're gonna play physical
(20:10):
basketball. And I feel like thatwas the difference in the first five minutes,
as they showed up to do thatand the maps showed up, going
here we are right, let's play. Yea, they'll plays. Everybody's afraid
of us, Come on, they'llplay. I do wonder, thank you,
mister Dallas. I do wonder ifKawhi being out, even though they
probably knew he would be out,Like, I wonder if it's it's human
(20:33):
nature that the Mavericks felt like,we're good here, Yeah, we got
this the guy that we fear themost doubt. Yeah. And by the
time you realize, oh crap, the guys that are playing have their hair
on fire. Whoops. Yeah. And it was until Kyrie in the third
quarter was like, Okay, Igot I mean, if nobody else wants
to, I will, I'll go. Yeah. I think a lot of
this was because the Mavericks are readingtheir own press clippings, because they were
(20:57):
the team that a lot of peoplewere talking about going into this thing is
as one that could really make somerelatively unexpected noise. Now, those who
follow the NBA throughout the year, you know what the Mavericks have done.
You know that they're going to bea pretty tough out for somebody. But
you know, when the playoffs rollaround, the day trippers jump on a
(21:18):
lot of people, and a lotof people take what they say to heart.
And I don't know. The Mavericksmight have too. I'd like to
think they're above that, but whoknows. If Tim Hardaway never played again,
that would be fine. I heardthat. I felt like his moment
where I believe it was a Kyriepassed and Tim Hardaway took a shot from
four inches from the rim with noone within five feet of him and missed.
(21:41):
Yeah, that was when I wasnot good. Oh yeah, this
is what the Mavericks are going todo tonight. That's what I went church.
Yeah, and it was in thefirst half, but it just it
was along the string of oh,okay, so nobody named Luke or Kyrie
can make a bucket, right, yeah, even from an inch away,
okay. And when things aren't goingwell, they rely on Luca and Kyrie
Moore, and Luca and Kyrie feellike they've got to do it all because
(22:03):
it's not working out for the otherguys. And then you stop trying to
find the other people, and thenyou stop sharing the ball and then the
ball movement flows down and then youjust lose. And that's pretty much what
we saw. They'll start different tonight, Yeah, yeah, I think so.
So that game fire everyone nine o'clocktonight on T and T late one.
(22:25):
Are they damn? Are our teamsjust not popular? And that's why
I think that's the answer. Wealways get the yeah, somebody else plays
in primetime and then when that's over, we'll slap the Dallas team. Yeah.
The first game tonight is the Sunsat the Timberwolves at six point thirty
and then seven point thirty of thePacers at the Bucks with Milwaukee leading that
(22:45):
series one to zero, and thenwe are the final game of the evening.
So you're going to tell us thatAmerica would rather see the Timberwolves and
who the Sons and the son Kadand Booker, Yeah, yeah, Katie
and book Her. Bathew Edwards ismaybe the one of the future faces of
the league. You're going to tellme that America would rather see them than
(23:06):
Luka Doncic apparently maybe apparently, Idon't know, but maybe. Yeah.
Layers are sports stuff. Everybody comingup? NeXT's time for Jeff's bucket.
Oh crap, guess who is doinglife without this. It's nuts and it's next.
