Speaker 1 (00:08):
Like the beam.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Welcome into another week of the Sports Cave with Biggest Puma.
I am your host, Sam Freeze. If you want to
reach out to me, you can find me on x
at Biggest Puma, on Instagram Biggest Dot Puma. Finally got
around to responding to some of those Instagram messages.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Apologies again if.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
You were one of the one of the many that
was left in the message request folder. Finally getting around
to sprucing up the old Instagram.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Account a little bit.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Broadcasting live to tape as always here on the East
side of San Antonio three days till Spurs Opening Night.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
It is officially NBA Opening Week.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Obviously, Spurs start on Thursday up in Dallas. Have a
national doubleheader Tomorrow night on TNT. We'll talk about the
NBA come Wednesday. I'm gonna do a full segment preview
in the NBA. I've been working on trying to get
some interviews lined up for that Wednesday show. It's been
(01:15):
a it's been a bit of a struggle here lately
to get the scheduling down and timing down with potential guests.
Hell even including the roommate. This is her busiest part
of the year as you might have noticed we didn't
do an episode Friday.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
My apologies, y'all. This is it's a lot doing this solo.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
I will just be completely honest with you, and even
lining up, you know, interview time with my own wife
is proving to be a little difficult at times. I say,
it's her busiest time, not only finals with grad school,
but also it's her big travel portion of the year.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
So last week she was here or.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
She was gone Monday through Thursday, got back late Thursday night,
we didn't have time to record before she turned around
and flew out early Sunday morning. Now on a trip
in San Diego for another convention. So again, apologies. Still
trying to figure out what schedule's going to work. I
(02:24):
don't intend for Friday episodes to go missing every week,
but that is two in a row, and I'm sorry
about that, y'all. But we're getting better. We will get better,
especially now that the NBA is kicking off this week
and we're going to have a lot to cover Monday
through Friday.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
So bear with me.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
We're only six weeks into this thing and I am
still figuring out how to get some of the flies
out of the ointment. But As always, we start with
what I watched last night, and of course on Mondays
there's a lot to cover, especially since we were off Friday,
so we'll save the college football for tomorrow's episode. That
(03:05):
will be the main segment. Today's main segment, we'll focus
heavily on NFL Week seven, where, my god, it was
so nice to watch football all weekend without the ominous
shadow of the Cowboys hanging over all of us. There
were some great NFL games, obviously great college football games.
(03:27):
I will throw this little nugget out. It was the
first time any network had two college football games on
the same day that both averaged over ten million viewers
Alabama Tennessee and then Texas Georgia. So huge weekend of
college football. We'll get into all that tomorrow. But before
we talk NFL today, got to catch up on the
(03:51):
MLB action. We have our World Series opponents set. We
have our matchup. Both number one seeds in the A
and NL end up making it to the World Series.
We get Dodgers Yankees. As if you go back a
couple weeks when we first started talking about the playoffs
(04:12):
on this show, I was hoping we'd get Yankees Dodgers
as a Rangers fan with no skin in the game
this year unfortunately. In fact, how do you think those
Yankees Dodgers' ratings will compare to Rangers Diamondbacks from last
year that ended up being the lowest rated World Series ever.
(04:35):
I think we'll probably they might even triple the number
from last year. I think the highest rated game the
Rangers Diamondbacks was like a hair over ten million, close
to eleven million. Yankees Dodgers should do insane TV numbers.
We'll get our first dose of that come Friday when
Game one starts, but we'll preview the actual series later
(04:58):
in the week, probably Wednesday, before we get into our
NBA talk, but did want to go back and relive
a little bit of the action from over the weekend.
The Guardians got their moment Thursday night. I think if
you're a Cleveland fan, you knew you were outmatched. I mean, obviously,
the three highest payroll teams and Cleveland where the four
(05:22):
that made it to the Championship Series. Mets actually had
the highest payroll in baseball this year, so the Guardians
were obviously the odd team amongst the final four, but
they did get their one moment in that championship series
Thursday night, I mentioned Noel with the pinch hit home
run in the ninth to tie it, and just when
(05:43):
the drama couldn't get heightened enough, David Fry ends up
hitting a walk off home run in the tenth and
you know, the Cleveland radio play by play call of that,
Anderson's TV call of that home run in the tenth
was It'll live on forever in Guardians in Cleveland history.
(06:05):
But unfortunately Yankees used that as Okay, we.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Gave you your one moment.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Now's time for the gentleman's sweep because they come back
in Game four and if if Cleveland had any chance
of winning that series, it needed their bullpen, specifically Emmanuel
Classe to be absolutely locked down, lights out, and he
ends up blowing another save in that Game four. Yankees
(06:31):
won that eight to six after Class blows the save
in the ninth. Stanton and Soto also homered in that game.
Sodo starting to show signs that he's ready, he's ready
to back up the brinks truck for specifically New York,
because I don't think they can let him get out
of town after especially after what he did in Game five,
(06:53):
and we had another extra inning game, and you thought
the Guardians, you know, after blowing the say even Game four. Obviously,
the way they won in extras in Game three, you
kind of felt like they were running out of gas.
But they were able to get that game into extras.
But once it got there, it was all Yankees, and
(07:14):
specifically it was all won Soto. He has an absolutely
titanic blast out to right center, three run shot in
the tenth inning. Yankees end up winning Game five, five
to two, advancing now to their forty first World Series ever,
but their first since two thousand and nine. So Yankees fans,
(07:36):
your fifteen year drought is finally over. I know it's
been a lost fifteen years wandering through the desert. But
they take care of business and then sit back and
see who they're going to face in the World Series.
Turning our attention to the National League side of things,
the Dodgers' bats have finally woken up. Mookie Betts specific
(08:00):
he is hot again, starting to string some multi hit
games together here in that end of that Mets series.
Dodgers end up winning Game four. There was very little
drama in any of these series. It was basically blowouts
or controlled wins back and forth between the two teams.
(08:21):
Dodgers won Game four ten to two, Mets then win
Game five twelve to six, forcing a return to LA,
although the return was pretty short lived because the Dodgers
went out and controlled Game six and as I said,
a drama less ten to five win, thus advancing them
(08:41):
to the World Series now for the first time since
twenty twenty. You'll remember that twenty twenty World Series was
the COVID year, the bubble year. They beat Tampa Bay
in Arlington, of all places, opening up the first World
Series games played in that New Ranger Stadium. We're between
the Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays. Just a fun trivia
(09:04):
fact for the rest of time. Now Dodgers will be
playing in their twenty second World Series total, and these
two teams, I mean I mentioned it at the beginning
of the playoffs. Obviously, the history of you know, New
York Yankees Brooklyn Dodgers sharing sharing you know, rival burrows
in New York City before the Dodgers moved west and
(09:27):
the western expansion of baseball moving out to LA. It's
the twelfth time now that both these teams have played
each other in the World Series. But the first time
since nineteen eighty and I know for you know a
lot of gen xers and older listeners, you know, those
late seventies, early eighties. Going into every season, it felt
(09:49):
like it was either Yankees or Dodgers. I mean they
played in seventy seven, seventy eight, and then again in
eighty one.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
I think I said eighty earlier.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
So the first time they've met in the World World
Series since eighty one. That was the last one, what
forty three years ago? Now, so we get all the storylines,
we get Judge versus Otwani. The Dodgers pitching staff and
rotation has a lot of questions going into this World
(10:18):
Series as well as part of their lineup. I mean,
how healthy will Freddie Freeman be he misses games in
that last series.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
Against the Mets.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
But the Dodgers survive, but they'll need Freeman to be
a producer, a run producer in that lineup if they're
going to beat the Yankees.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
But I'm hyped. I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
I mean, this is as again as a baseball fan
with not a whole lot of dog in the fight.
I mean, I don't like the Yankees, but I also
don't really like the Dodgers.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
I just want to see great.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Give me seven games of drama filled baseball, of every
pitch meaning something. Give me one one run games, two
run games throughout seven of them. Please as we round
the bases, Okay, baseball cliche. As we close in on
(11:13):
the end of the baseball season, I think we got
the best matchup in the World Series we could have
possibly asked for, and pretty excited for that to start
Friday night. Also this past weekend, before we get into
NFL talk, I got to mention all of the activities
over in Austin. Of course we'll talk about the guy
with Kanye, We'll talk about the guy with Conway Twitty hair.
(11:37):
I don't think my grandma would have nearly loved Kanye
Twitty as much as she loved Conway Twitty. Very clear
distinction need necessary there. Of course we'll talk about the
guy wearing the Guardian cap over in Austin last weekend.
But also we had the Formula One race in Austin
this weekend for Ari end up going one to two.
(11:59):
They get first, second, Leclair wins, Carlos Signs gets second,
but we had some drama with the third place in
the championship race. It's coming down to Max Verstappen and
Orlando Norris. Verstappen, Red Bull driver Norris McLaren driver. Norris
finishes third, but because of a five second penalty, he
(12:21):
ends up finishing fourth behind Verstappen on the final podium,
which means Verstappin increases his overall championship lead over Norris.
Now with I believe five races to go rounding into
the back end of the Formula One schedule now and
it was I mean I get the penalty. Norris absolutely
(12:43):
left the track limit. So in Formula One you can't
just drive everywhere if you if you exceed track limitations. Basically,
if you drive off the track, you cannot hold your position,
or if you're fighting for a position with a guy
and you drive off the track, you got to give
that spot back. So Norris doesn't give the spot back,
(13:05):
hopes that the marshals at the stewards don't give him
a penalty for leaving the track. He had already left
the track three times earlier in the race without getting
a penalty, so he had been warned.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
It was pretty clear.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
It felt like the five second penalty was deserving, but
unfortunate for McLaren as they try to close that championship
gap with Verstappen that Norris finishes behind Max on the
final podium.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
It's interesting though.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
With Ferrari going one two, there is some hope still
that Ferrari could claw back into the Constructors Championship, meaning
the overall team championship. Red Bull and McLaren obviously are
battling back and forth for that as well, but Ferrari
now has an outside chance to potentially pass one or
(13:57):
both of them in the Constructors Constructor's Cup. I still
think it's Red Bull and Verstapin's dual championships to win,
but at least we're finally getting some drama in a
Formula One season for the first time in.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
A long time.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Forever it was Lewis and Mercedes dominating. He had a
terrible weekend in Austin, missing out in Q one of
qualifiers and then crashes into the gravel and beaches. His
car had to get a safety car come out and
pick him up. So it was Lewis dominating, and then
it was Max dominating with Red Bull, and now it's
(14:35):
still Max winning, but it's not nearly as dominant. As
it has been the last few years. And I just
think back, you know, when Formula one first started over
in Austin, when they first built the track, I was
still working for Cox Media here in San Antonio, so
I was able to get lucky and claim a bunch
(14:57):
of the unused tickets for those early years Formula one,
and we went, you know, five of the first six
years missed one somewhere in there. But you know, we
would go and the stands would maybe be half full.
It was the grounds where you could get anywhere without
bumping elbows or shoulders with people. You know, the bar
(15:19):
lines were basically walk up and get served immediately. And
to look at the TV broadcast now of how crazy
that thing is and how many people they're packing into
the to the track every year, and it just keeps
growing and growing. It seems like, you know, the days
(15:41):
of Taylor Swift being the musical guest and people still
not even picking up the tickets, as was the case
in year two or three. I remember it blew my mind.
It was I think it was her only North American
stop that entire calendar year. It was playing at the
Formula one race in Austin, and people still weren't picking
(16:04):
up the tickets to go over there for the race,
even if they were just going for the concert, they
were still you know, handful of tickets that weren't being
claimed that went to good use for me and the
roommate to go over there and enjoy. But just amazing
growth for the sport. Obviously driven a lot by the
(16:25):
Netflix documentary, but still good to see a full crowd,
a full grand stand of racing fans over there for
the race Saturday and or qualifying Saturday sprint race and
then full race on Sunday, and then finally before we
talk a little or a lot of NFL football, I
(16:47):
got to mention I've been mentioning the Stars were the
first team in the NHL to get to four wins
this year.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
Well, they finally lost.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
They lost Game number five up on the road in Washington,
end up losing three to two to the Caps, but
it was a great bounce back. On Saturday, they end
up playing a matinee matchup, a rematch of the Western
Conference finals from last year, and Otter absolutely stood on
his head against the Oilers to get that win four
(17:16):
to one. Stars weren't didn't really have a whole lot going.
Oilers really looked like they were on the precipice of
putting a couple goals on the board and taking control
of that game, but Otter kept them in it long
enough for the Stars to get a couple power plays
and get some goals on the board end up again
(17:36):
winning that game four to one over the Oilers, So
I'll take a five and one start. They are back
in action again come Tuesday, and I cannot tell you
how excited I am for this week. We have World Series,
NHL Hockey, NBA Opening week, obviously, NFL, and college football.
(17:57):
We're still in the middle of our fifty five secutive
days of football on our television, So great, great, great
time to watch sports, to talk about sports, to listen
to sports.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
Again.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
I appreciate y'all riding along and experiencing and riding this
sports obsession right there alongside. So without further ado, let's
jump into some NFL talk, where not only was it
nice to not have to watch the Cowboys, it was
(18:33):
really nice to listen to Tom Brady not have to
talk about the Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Nation Finally find me some scenes that time's gonna pick
up four and a really another good, powerful run, and
there's Steve Spagnolo. He's been the pain of my existence.
I saw a PTSD from some of those blitzes in
the two thousand and seven Super Bowl. But my friend
(19:00):
Michael Strahan says he's the greatest guy on the road.
Speaker 1 (19:02):
But I don't want to hear that. I do not
want to hear that.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
He's been the bain of my existence. He is with
these chiefs and any ree going back to the days
in Philly and even before that, back in nineteen eighty years.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
I mean, I wish I could come on here and
play a clip of Tom Brady falling flat on his
face in the announcers booth. But I think he might
be pretty damn good at this. And again, I think
when he doesn't have to watch bad football like he
has for most of the season, because Fox has been
getting every Cowboys game just about so far and throwing
(19:37):
Brady on it, of course, because you put Dallas Cowboys
and Tom Brady on a broadcast and that does insane numbers.
But Tom's sounding a lot more relaxed. I mean, flashback
to the first two weeks of the season, where you know,
bro Hard couldn't figure out how to que Tom up.
(19:58):
Tom couldn't figure out, didn't seem like he knew exactly
when he was supposed to talk. There was a lot
of awkward silence between the two of them. I it
might be time to retract a lot of what I
said about that booth. They are clearly now forming some
chemistry and slotting in right behind Troy and Joe if
(20:21):
we were to rank the announcer duos. I don't take
anything back about Tariko and Collinsworth or al Michaels and
Herbie for that matter.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
But Tom's pretty damn good at this.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
And you know, I mentioned obviously it was nice to
watch a week of football without having to worry or
hate watch the Cowboys. Part of that also is getting
to listen to, you know, other games, other guys call games,
you know, hearing third Leg Greg on the other Fox game,
(20:54):
hearing I'm gonna have to bring back the third Leg
Greg seventh floor wrap from his Miami days soon, hearing
Romo and nanceco. It was it was just a good
weekend to view football without any kind of disappointment. It
was good just to watch the games. And you know,
(21:15):
we mentioned last week there was a good lineup of
top shelf matchups and they absolutely did not disappoint, So
I guess actually in that point there was some disappointment
because just realizing that the Cowboys are so far behind
that that upper tier, or hell even the middle tier
(21:38):
in both conferences, but specifically the NFC, I guess that
would be the disappointing takeaway from the weekend. But I
mentioned the big games lived up to the hype. Starting
with Packers Texans. We had a game winning field goal
from Brandon McManus for the Packers. He had just been
signed Wednesday and brought and obviously a veteran kicker. You
(22:01):
don't need a whole lot of time to get up
to speed on things. But Brandon McManus had his own
issues back in the offseason. I believe it wasn't criminal charges,
but it was a civil suit for some sexual harassment
I think from flight attendants if I remember correctly, But
he had been on the street since the summer. Packers
(22:23):
sign him midweek. He goes on to kick the game
winning field goal. Both of those teams are just fine.
I mean they're both five and two now. That was
going to be a tough, tough road game for the Texans.
And they stayed right there in it till the very end.
I think the bigger question is how can the Packers
(22:46):
stick up or how can the Packers hang around in
their division? Because the Texans aren't going to face any
challenge the rest of the season from their division or
any threat to them winning that division. Are just trying
to keep pace with the other two teams in that division,
or hell even add the Bears who are four and two.
(23:08):
But the main two teams in that division who also
played each other on Sunday, Lions and Vikings. Lions end
up beating the Vikings thirty one to twenty nine on
a really really exciting game, I mean a back and
forth game. Vikings almost had their own chance to kick
a game winning phild goal in that one would have
(23:30):
been a sixty eight yard pild goal attempt right at
the end of the game. But Vikings get called for
an illegal formation penalty a tackle wasn't on the line,
so they end up getting pushed back, Darnold gets sacked.
Speaker 1 (23:43):
Game over.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
I would have loved to see that sixty eight yard
phild goal attempt because I've long been saying one of
the only positions in football that hasn't revolutionized or evolved
in the way that most others have is kicker. But
now we're starting to see fifty yard kicks are automatic
(24:05):
for most guys. If you have one of these, you know,
really an average kicker is nailing it from fifty now.
But we're starting to see guys consistently hit at fifty eight,
fifty nine, sixty, hair over sixty, and some of these
guys appear to have range all the way to seventy,
(24:25):
if not more. I don't think we're far away from
a sixty five yard field goal winning a Super Bowl,
and it's not really that crazy of a statistic of
a feat. It feels like kickers now, and we're seeing
a couple of these other guys like Brandon Aubrey that
were soccer players that never played football, that go the
(24:48):
route of spring ball, you know, UFL ball, start kicking
phild goals and eventually make it to the NFL with
no football experience whatsoever. So maybe we are seeing a
revolution amongst the NFL kicking elites. But back to Lions Vikings,
(25:10):
both teams now five and one and clearly the class
of the NFC. I mean, I had my questions about
the Vikings. Going into that game, I thought the Lions
might expose them more than they did, but that was
an absolutely could have gone either way game for the
majority of it. You know, Vikings deserve all of the
(25:31):
praise you can give them, even in that loss. You know,
thinking back to letting Kirk Cousins walk in free agency,
you know, drafting the quarterback from Michigan, JJ McCarthy, and
then him getting hurt and being out the full season,
and what is Sam Darnold and that offense done. They've
continued to put points on the board and taken advantage
(25:54):
of the weapons they still have surrounding Donald. So Viking
aren't going anywhere. I do still think they might be
the third best team in the NFC North. I think
the Packers, as Jordan Love, really rounds into form and
that division starts playing each other and beating up on
(26:16):
each other more as the season goes on. I think
Vikings solid luck for a playoff team, as are the Packers,
but it wouldn't surprise me if that division ends up Lions, Packers, Vikings.
But clearly all three of those teams I think, are
you know, better than every other team in the NFC,
(26:37):
right now with the you know, Washington is obviously the
next closest record wise, but still, you know, I feel
less sure about Washington than I did Minnesota. I feel
a whole lot better about Minnesota's staying power than Washington's.
And then there's San Francisco lurking behind everybody and a
(27:00):
little further behind everybody because they lose to the Chiefs
on Sunday twenty eight to eighteen. And going back to
that Tom Brady clip, you know the way the Chiefs
are doing it this year compared to years past, you know,
Steve Spagnolia deserves all of that praise that Brady was
given him. What Brady called the bane of his existence, Well,
(27:22):
he was the bane of Brock Perdy's existence on Sunday. Granted,
San Francisco is dealing with massive, massive injuries on the
offensive side of the ball, but you know, Chiefs are
now the last remaining undefeated team in a season that
Mahomes has six touchdown passes and eight interceptions. They are
(27:44):
driven by that defense right now, way more so than
the offense, which is insane to say. With Pat Mahomes
on that roster and what we've seen them do a
year's past, but they are. They're winning games the hard way,
fight their offensive struggles, and again on Sunday. Speaking of
(28:05):
offensive struggles, I mean, what can you say about the
Niners lack of weapons. They were missing Jennings going into
the game, you know, hip injury.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
Their third best wide receiver. Turns out Deebo.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
Samuel had been battling illness all week, which also the
NFL might want to have a conversation with San Fran
because didn't get a whole lot of that information on
injury list all week. But Deebo only plays four games
or only plays four plays. Turns out he has a
pneumonia like illness, you know, fluid in his lungs. He
(28:40):
was hospitalized on Sunday. And then there's the worst long
term injury, Brandon ayut toward his ACL and MCL late
in that first half. So obviously you're down your top
three wide receivers. You don't have Christian McCaffrey to rely
on to lean on the run game. So that's san
Fran team was just left without any weapons. Oh, I
(29:03):
shouldn't say any weapons. We did get the rookie debut
of Ricky Pearsall, who played in an NFL game yesterday,
fifty days after being shot in an attempted robbery. These
guys are just built different. That is insane, no matter
how you put it. Even if you had told me
(29:25):
he just got grazed on the arm and he played
fifty days later, I would say that's insane. No, he
had a bullet travel through his chest and played in
an NFL game fifty days later.
Speaker 1 (29:38):
Just insane story.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
So if you're a Niners fan, I guess that is
your one silver lining coming out of that game. But
obviously the injury concerns are just mounting. And from a
Cowboys perspective, if Dallas is ever going to beat San Francisco,
this would be the week for it to happen. Well, obviously,
(30:01):
we'll talk about that game later in the week on
Thursday when we preview the upcoming NFL schedule, But I
think we're going to get some Cowboys headlines coming out
before then that we might mention on the next couple
of days episodes, because we do. We get Jerry returning
to his radio show tomorrow morning. We'll see if he
(30:23):
apologizes to the guys or if he even acts like
even acknowledges the events of last week's appearance. But you know,
Dallas has their own injury issues. Of course, we know
Tank is still going to be out. You know, Deron
Bland should be back. Micah is questionable. I'm sure we'll
get an update on that throughout the week that we'll
(30:45):
talk about. But Dallas has the injuries on defense, San
Fran has the injuries on offense. Which team can overcome
them going into this matchup this week on Sunday, the
way it's shaping up now, it might be first team
to twenty wins. But we'll talk about that game a
(31:05):
lot more later in the week, and of course we'll
talk Cowboys news as it comes up throughout the week.
Looking at the NFC East matchups from this last weekend,
really interesting turn of events in Washington where Jaden Daniels
gets hurt on the first possession. Washington was already up
(31:26):
a touchdown because of an Andy Dalton pick six. They
go on to beat the Panthers forty to seven, led
by Marcus Mariota, after Daniels left the game early on
the first possession. As I said, we get the news
now that it's a rib injury.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
He is a week to week.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
He's not ruled out for this coming week against Chicago.
But I would imagine if I was in charge of
things in Washington, I would want to be extremely cautious
with Jade and Daniels in this room year, in his
first year of facing NFL defenses. And we kind of
had mentioned it early in the year a couple of
(32:07):
weeks ago, as Jaden was having his coming out party
and there was nothing you could knock stats wise or
you know, the way he was playing the game.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
It was just a you know, the the ghost of
RG three's career.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
I kept creeping into my mind as I watched Jaden
Daniels run and not really protect his body as if
he was playing you know, high school or Pac twelve
Arizona State ball. He took some shots last year at LSU,
but did a good job of staying healthy. I think
that's the only question with him right now in the league.
(32:43):
But Washington granted against Carolina, you can't really judge what
they did after he left the game when you're playing
an opponent so so bad like Carolina, but they go
on to win that game big. It will be a
question of how long Jaden Daniels is out because I
don't think they're going to run away with the division
(33:05):
if even if he was healthy, But if he does
have to miss some time, then this division could get
really really interesting Elsewhere in the division. Saquon Barkley's return
to New York, he ends up rushing for his second
most career yards of his entire career. He goes for
one hundred and seventy six yards on only seventeen carries.
(33:26):
Quick math, that's a shade over twenty yards a touch
out of the backfield. They blow the doors off the
Eagles or they blow the doors off the Giants twenty
eight to three. Still weird talking about Saquon barkley statline
and then saying, and it was in a win over
the Giants. But Eagles look like they are a flawed
(33:49):
team like most of the NFC is. But I still think,
as does Vegas. I still think the Eagles are the
betting favorite to win the NFC East. They just got
to keep step with Washington through this middle part of
the stretch, middle part of the schedule, because the back
(34:11):
end of all of these NFC East teams outside of
the Giants, you know, the Cowboys still have to play
Washington twice, still have to play the Eagles twice. There's
going to be a lot of opportunity for any one
of those three teams to take control of the division
through head to head matchups. Obviously, Dallas is such a
(34:34):
far step behind Washington and Philly as of this moment.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
It's so hard because I.
Speaker 2 (34:41):
Try not to get too low on them based off
of the blowouts at home, but I also try not
to get too high on them because elsewhere the Steelers
one again, the Steelers are now five and two, and
one of those losses is to Dallas when Dallas was
on the road, So it's somewhere in between there is
(35:04):
who Dallas really is. But I think even who Dallas
really is is still a step behind Philly and a
half step behind Washington. So we'll run through the rest
of the scores across the league. Those were the big
circled matchups that I had that had kept notes on
and was keeping close tabs on. Again as I got
(35:27):
to watch a Cowboys free weekend of football and it
was absolutely glorious. Doug Peterson saved his job potentially for
at least one more week. The Battle of the one
in five teams in London, Jaguars come out on top
of that. Even going back to Thursday night, should mention
(35:48):
Sean Payton absolutely embarrassed his former team in his return
to New Orleans. Broncos won that thirty three to ten.
Jaguars won that Sunday morning early game thirty two sixteen
in a pretty surprising final score, I would say surprising.
Seahawks beat the Falcons thirty four to fourteen. I still
(36:10):
can't get any kind of idea of who's actually good
in that NFC South Division, or hell, that NFC West
Division for that matter. We're gonna close out today looking
at the division standings as they sit right now, But
Seahawks keeping up with that NFC West race.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
You got to beat other.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
NFC teams if you're gonna have any chance of winning
your division, much less, beat your divisional opponents, and Seahawks
take care of business. Amari Cooper gets a touchdown reception
in his first game with the Bills. It's amazing what
a number one receiver can do to an offense. Well,
it's also amazing what an offense can do to the
Titans defense. Bills win that one, thirty four to ten
(36:56):
over the Titans. And if you saw the Amari touchdown.
You know, it looked like Josh Allen called an audible
at the line and Amari turned to the receiver next
to him, was like, I have no.
Speaker 1 (37:06):
Idea what the hell he's calling.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
And so the receiver, like backyard football, kind of motions
to him to run a post and that's exactly what
Amari did, and as one of the best route runners
in football, he was able to get open catches his
first touchdown as a member of the Buffalo Bills. And
that Bills team continues to roll talk about teams that
are going to run away with their division. That one
(37:31):
Fills might as well set and set it in stone.
Now the Bills are going to win that. Turning to
the Battle of Ohio, Bingals and Browns played an ugly game.
Bingals end up winning twenty one to fourteen. They continue
to save their season, crawl out of the terrible hole
they dug themselves to start it. But that game was
(37:53):
all about the Browns. Before the game, the Browns swap
out their backup quarterbacks. They move Jamis Winston all the
way down to third string emergency quarterback, elevate dtr Dorian
Thompson Robinson to the backup, mainly because Stefanski didn't want
(38:14):
to have that pressure of having Jamis suited because there
are absolutely calls amongst the Cleveland fan base to bench DeShawn,
which how can you not call for that? He's been awful,
and to make matters worse, Now he ends up popping
his achilles in that game, he'll be out. I mean,
that's the same injury Aaron Rodgers had last year. Granted
(38:37):
he's not forty years old like Aaron Rodgers, but that's
a year recovery. And you know, really, for Browns fans,
you weren't winning games with DeShawn, and now you don't
want to win games because they actually control their own
draft pick this year, I believe, so now they'll be
(38:58):
looking to bottom out tank, which wouldn't surprise me if
you see some other names. You know, Amari's already gone.
It wouldn't surprise me if you see some other names
potentially on the trade block leaving Cleveland before the deadline.
But just and of course, in Cleveland and in American fashion,
(39:18):
at this point, fans boo Deshaun Watson as he's slaying there,
unable to walk off, had to be carted off, just
an absolute terrible scene all the way around. It's one
thing to hold a guy accountable for his past actions.
It's another thing to root an injury or cheer for
(39:39):
an injury to him, and that unfortunate. The injury unfortunate,
the reaction unfortunate. The whole Brown season or hell really
existence in this Brown's two point zero era is all unfortunate.
For the most part. Rest of the games from the
weekend were pretty boring, non consequential matchups. Colts beat the
(40:01):
Dolphins sixteen ten, Rams beat the Raiders twenty to fifteen,
and then in the Sunday night football matchup, we saw
the Steelers run away from the Jets. They end up
winning that game thirty seven to fifteen. I will say
we saw a little bit of the old Russ Wilson
in that game for Pittsburgh. We also saw one of
(40:21):
the worst throws I've ever seen on an NFL field
where he tried to throw a quick screen to a
wide receiver and it barely made it.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
It was three yards short of his feet. But we
also saw a bit of the.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Old gunslinger Russ Wilson and some of those deep throws
to pickens that haven't been there with Justin Fields at quarterback,
the Steelers could be finding something. Obviously now five and two,
they you know, Justin Fields was admirable to get them
to that point. If Russ Wilson can show any flashes
(40:55):
of that old Seattle Russ and not the last year
Denver Bronk Russ, the Steelers might be a threat, you know,
to make a decent run. Obviously, the AFC is so
top heavy, a team like Pittsburgh I think is still
a wrung below the elite of the conference. But we
(41:17):
also got to see DeVante Adams debut for the Jets,
where DeVante Adams now has had himself a week where
last week lost to the Steelers with the Raiders traded
to the Jets, and now lost to the Steelers again,
So he has two losses to the Steelers in the
last week or so, which and I understand, you know,
(41:38):
wanting to give Aaron Rodgers some weapons and specifically a
weapon that he's familiar with in DeVante Adams. But you know,
the Jets are two and five now. The firing of
Sala seemed early, it seemed premature, it seemed reactionary, and
obviously he was not the problem. The defense was not
(41:58):
the problem. It was the offense. And if you're a
two and four team trading giving up assets for a
receiver like Devonte Adams, now you're sitting at two and
five and you're just drifting, you know, further and further
behind Buffalo in that AFC East Division race. I just
felt like multiple short sighted decisions being made back to
(42:22):
back to back from that New York front office. And
speaking of the division standings, I wanted to close out
real quick looking across the league because you know, as
a cowboy fan like most of us are, the division
race is going to be their only path to a
playoff spot. But after seven weeks now, we're starting to
(42:45):
see some real separation in some of these divisions. Speaking
of the AFC East, you know Buffalo now sitting at
five and two that technically the next closest team to
them is two and four Miami with two potentially coming
back soon from concussion. I think you can wrap that
division up to Buffalo, especially now with the addition of
(43:06):
Amari Cooper them replacing Diggs mid season after losing him
in the offseason. Buffalo seems primed to run away with
that Baltimore, who will see on Monday night football play
in Tampa Bay. They're sitting there now tied with Pittsburgh
five and two, But I could not feel any differently
(43:27):
about two five and two teams than I do Baltimore
and Pittsburgh, especially having seen both of them play against Dallas.
Baltimore clearly is the more threatening team coming out of
the AFC than Pittsburgh, but doesn't look like they're going
to be able to run away with that division, especially
(43:47):
if Russell Wilson can lead a competent offense. For Pittsburgh,
they are primed in a position to get a wild
card spot out of that. Still would expect Baltimore to
win the division, but Cincinnati is also almost back up
to five hundred, and it could you know, by the
end of the year it could be Pittsburgh and Cincinnati
(44:08):
battling for that wildcard spot. Mentioned Houston earlier, I think
they're going to have no problem winning their division. They're
five and two now, Colts with the win ended up
moving to over five hundred. They're four and three, but
clearly they are such a step behind Houston in every
way except for their only one game back in the standings.
(44:32):
But I think Houston retains firm control of that division
throughout the rest of the season, and then, of course,
the inevitable AFC West, where the Chiefs are the last
remaining undefeated team. They sit six to zero with Denver
their closest opponent in division at four and three, so
(44:52):
don't think we're going to see a division race there.
So you know, between Buffalo running away with their division
Kansas City run away with THEIRS, Houston should control THEIRS through.
Speaker 1 (45:04):
The rest of the year.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
That's three of the four divisions that might as well
be locked up pending massive, massive injury, but that AFC
North could get interesting. Turning to the NFC real quick,
starting of course, with the NFC East, Washington with the
win moves to five and two.
Speaker 1 (45:22):
Philly with the win four and two.
Speaker 2 (45:24):
Because they've already had their bye week obviously, Dallas on
by sitting at three and three, still a division that
I think we're going to see at least Washington lose
the lead in that division at least once. I think
there's still a long way to go as those top
three teams play each other head to head throughout the
(45:45):
rest of the year. The NFC North, the best division
in all of football, and it's not even debatable. Detroit
with the win over Minnesota has the tiebreaker. Now both
of them though five and one overall, Green Bay with
win five and two, and then the Chicago Bears with
rookie number one pick Caleb Williams sitting four and two.
(46:07):
All four teams would be playoff teams if it ended
as it is now. NFC South complete crapshoot, Really don't know.
I mean, we'll see what Tampa Bay does on Monday
Night football, but all of these you could convince me
Atlanta wins it. You could convince me Tampa wins it,
(46:28):
although Atlanta looked awful against Seattle. As I say, we'll
see what Tampa does against Baltimore. But I think clearly
the Saints are a step behind those two teams at
the top of the division, and the Panthers are the
worst team in football. And then the NFC West. What
a weird year for the NFC West, where usually you
(46:49):
know you have the dominant forty nine ers at the
top of that division. With all the injuries they're going through,
they actually find themselves behind Seattle and behind Arizona. We'll
see what Arizona does tonight on that second game of
the Monday night football doubleheader. Also should mention that game
only available on ESPN Plus. I'd be curious to know
(47:14):
what kind of streaming numbers that game actually does how
many people watch it on ESPN Plus. Interesting move from
Disney there, but Seattle sitting at the top of that
division now with the win over Atlanta, they.
Speaker 1 (47:27):
Are back above five hundred.
Speaker 2 (47:29):
The Rams at the bottom of that division still struggling
with their own injuries, similar to San Francisco. It's just
hard to create any offense when you don't have playmakers.
So I would expect that NFC West Division also to
have multiple leaders as the season goes on. But we
are again, the AFC is showing real separation amongst its divisions.
(47:54):
The NFC is showing real parody amongst its divisions. So
if you're a cowboy, at least hold on to hope
that no one is running away with things right now
in your division, and really outside of the NFC North,
no team is looking at that scary or isn't dealing
with similar injury issues of their own, similar to what
(48:18):
Dallas is trying to work through right now. So we'll
talk come Thursday. We'll preview the upcoming games for this week.
Of course, I mentioned the Monday night football doubleheader tonight
Ravens at Bucks, Chargers at Cardinals, and then tomorrow we'll
talk a lot of college football. Gotta recap the game
(48:40):
between Texas and Georgia and Austin. I got to recap
Alabama Tennessee. Hell, even the road Runners got to win
on homecoming. We'll talk about all that on tomorrow's episode. Again, y'all,
I appreciate you riding along. We're still figuring things out here.
This isn't the final iteration of what I want this
to be. I don't want to come across as the
(49:03):
solo guy who is the know it all, who's the
blowhard just yelling at sports. But I also don't want
to be the guy that's just reading box scores. So
dealing with some own internal anxiety, trying to figure out
exactly what I want this show to be. But fear not,
we will head down plow through as we figure it
(49:27):
out together.
Speaker 1 (49:28):
That'll do it for today. Appreciate it, y'all. Be safe.
We'll talk tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (49:33):
Kids. What do we say about drugs? Yeah,
