Welcome to the Upside with Jordan, a dose of good news,
because it's a big world out there. The story comes
to us via the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, where a maestro,
a conductor of music who's been dealing with Parkinson's disease
for the last dozen years, is now able to control
his tremors and once again lead his orchestra. People in
the PD community, and I'm one of them, are familiar
with this. It's called deep brain stimulation or DBS, and

Rand Laycock, the conductor, was eligible for the surgery that
inserts leads that stimulate parts of the brain, and in
the case of this gentleman, the DBS worked and his
tremor has nearly disappeared. Now, DBS is not a cure
for Parkinson's, but it's an important step forward and the
technology is advancing quickly. The musician was originally fitted with
a DBS system and now has an upgrade called adaptive
