Traci Dority-Shanklin (00:36):
Many years ago, I went to hear Iyanla
Vanzant speak at Agape Church inLos Angeles.
Her speeches theme was tellingyour story because it will heal
you and others.
I also heard Bono give aninterview where he said he was
born with eccentric thoughts.

(00:57):
Then recently during aconversation with Segal's
President and CEO, DavidBlumenstein, on The World of
Multiemployer Benefit Funds, hesaid, rather than lead with the
catchphrase of passion, he choseto lead with curiosity.
While I don't think I haveeccentric ideas.
I have taken an eccentric path.

(01:19):
I can't say I have just onepassion, but many things
intrigue me and I think we areall telling our story and all
here healing each other throughour shared experiences.
Through my two podcasts, TheWorld of MultiEmployer Benefit
Funds, and The Nuclear FamiliesEvangelist, I strive to share

(01:42):
two of my curiosities and apiece of my story.
I do hope that they help or healpeople who listen.
These two podcasts are seeminglyunrelated, yet I often ask
myself what I value most.
Two words dominate my thought,"building relationships" and

(02:04):
"family." I specifically use theword"building relationships"
because build implies time.
Have you ever watched thebuilding of a house?
A lot of preparation goes intolaying the foundation.
The exterior frame goes uprather quickly, but there is an
agonizing period while theinside home details are built.

(02:28):
When you come from or have ablended family, you learn that
the foundation is critical forstability and the framing can
happen very fast when two peoplefall in love for the second
time.
But the intricate building ofrelationships takes time.
I am the mother of two adoptedchildren and the stepmother to

(02:51):
two stepchildren.
I am also a stepdaughter, a halfsister, and a step sister in a
nuclear families where therehave been multiple divorces
resulting in multiple blendedfamilies.
So I know a little somethingabout this process.
In my career working with laborunions and multi-employer

(03:11):
benefit plans, I have been usingmy relationship building for
over two decades.
Recently, I was reminded of thedeeper meaning of my
professional relationshipbuilding when I connected it to
something more profound.
My family.
I was attending an event hostedby the Loveall Foundation, an

(03:33):
organization dedicated toproviding resources to deserving
children who desperately needhelp and can't get it elsewhere.
As I watched the video depictingthis organization's enormous
impact on the lives of so manychildren across the globe, a
personal photo filled thescreen.
It was the orphanage in Haitiwhere my daughter spent her

(03:56):
first few months of life.
I will never forget thegenerosity of the love all
foundation donating on my behalfto the orphanage.
At that moment, I connected tohow personal my career is.
First.
Seeing this photo reminded me ofmy daughter's unique story.
Then the memories of our journeyto become a family filled me.

(04:20):
Like most painful memories thathave a happy ending, we quickly
forget the trauma of thosemoments in seconds.
It all flashed through me and Iwas enormously grateful.
Grateful of course to have mydaughter in my life and thriving
but grateful for somethingbigger.

(04:41):
Grateful for my multiemployerextended family.
I can't begin to tell you howmany angels we had helping in
our arduous process to completeour Haitian adoption.
But I can tell you that everyonewho helped us is someone I know
or worked with in themulti-employer business.

(05:02):
My multi-employer family helpedme expand my already Nuclear
families to my motherhood path.
I feel blessed to share mystories and bring the thoughts
and perspectives of experts tomany topics on this Thanksgiving
day.
I wanna thank everyone who haslistened or will listen in the

(05:27):
future to either The World ofMultiemployer Benefit Funds or
the Nuclear Families Evangelist.
If you want to hear stories andinformation that can help better
your life, please listen andsubscribe to one of the
podcasts.
Again, that's The World ofMultiemployer Benefit Funds or

(05:47):
the Nuclear FamiliesEvangelists.
Anyway, I hope you have ablessed holiday and happy
Thanksgiving.

Join me on this podcast as I navigate the murky waters of human behavior, current events, and personal anecdotes through in-depth interviews with incredible people—all served with a generous helping of sarcasm and satire. After years as a forensic and clinical psychologist, I offer a unique interview style and a low tolerance for bullshit, quickly steering conversations toward depth and darkness. I honor the seriousness while also appreciating wit. I’m your guide through the twisted labyrinth of the human psyche, armed with dark humor and biting wit.
