Speaker 1 (00:00):
Need to achieve your money dreams. This is the Boomburn
money minute on seven hundred wlw Oh.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
I guess we'll have Erica Hirsko wiz back after punching
me right in the nose in the last hour.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Well, listen, you, you set yourself up for that. What what
am I supposed to do?
Speaker 2 (00:18):
I did? I did? You came out swinging? I like it?
I like it. The CEOs of Netflix laid out the
company's case for acquiring Warner Brothers Discovery after a competing
offer from Paramount Skydance.
Speaker 4 (00:32):
Tom This morning, Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos released a
memo to their employees saying they were committed to releasing
Warner Brothers movies in theaters and promised no overlap or
studio closures.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Amid some worries about job losses.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
Netflix is trying to close that eighty two point seven
billion dollar deal after Paramount made a hostile offer for
Warner Brothers, with CEOs expressing confidence in their agreement despite
regulatory concerns.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
I find this to be a fascinating story. And that's
around SpaceX. It is now confirmed that it is preparing
to possibly become a public company by next year.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
Yeah, this is a pretty big deal of it happens, right, So,
Elon Musk's rocket and satellite maker is looking to fund
artificial intelligence data centers in space and a base on
the Moon.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
And if all this.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Happens, it could be the largest initial public offering of
all time.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Tom Wow, And the futures they were looking pretty good earlier.
How about now?
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Yeah, Mark, the future is still higher.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
The Dow futures up two hundred and eighteen points, NASTAQ
futures up one forty three, SMP futures up thirty four
from Bloomberg Erica Herskowitz on news Radio seven hundred WLW.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Alrighty eighth nine on the Big One, seven undred WLW.
We do it every Monday or Friday or Tuesday, depending
on when the Bengals play, and when they play on
a Sunday, we call it the Morning After. And we're
joined by a former star receiver and return man of
the Bengals, Tim McGee. Tim, I don't know what much
to say, my friend about yesterday day. It just felt like,
(02:01):
even with three games to go, that it was the
official the stamp of the ending on what has been
a brutal season.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
Yeah, it was pretty pathetic and very sad to see.
Starting with the body language of language of Joe Burrow,
he just didn't seem to be locked in his normal self.
Speaker 6 (02:23):
And I know he had said some.
Speaker 5 (02:25):
Words previously last week about not having fun, but it
did appear that he was very uninspired. And you know,
typically being in that locker room for so long, you know,
ten years plus and an agent and all that, typically
something internally has happened where you're not necesarily when I
say getting your way, we're talking about more philosophy and understanding,
(02:50):
and it's just not going in the direction that he
probably desires, and obviously has showed on the football field
where the offense was shut out. And that's just you
could told me Tom ever that the Bengals offense with
Joe Burrow starting in Jamar Chase in the lineup, that
they would get shut out.
Speaker 6 (03:08):
So that was a huge disappointment.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
You know, Burrow made those comments tim last week, and look,
there have been a lot of guys that have been
basically psychoanalyzing Burrow, not only locally but nationally about his comments.
And then we see what we saw yesterday. Then after
the game he comes out and says, hey, look, I'm
not bashing Cincinnati. We have the right people here to
get the job done and get this thing moving in
(03:33):
the right direction. Do you think that he's probably just
saying what a lot of people probably want to hear,
and that he really can't voice or has decided not
to voice the way he really feels about things.
Speaker 5 (03:46):
Well, that's cleaned up on our one. You know, he
let out his true feelings at that moment. And you know,
I couldn't tell you over and over because I've never
had the social media I didn't play in the.
Speaker 6 (03:57):
Social media era.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
But when you have a microphone in your at your
lips so much and so consistently that you know, someone
caught him at that right time where he actually, you know,
probably did say this is how I feel. I'm not
having fun, so on his whole forefend. Yeah, you know,
he didn't necessarily retract it.
Speaker 6 (04:17):
It was more of a walking back a little bit.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
To just say, you know, and he's going to have
those And you have to understand, and fans have to understand.
Management has coaches players alike. You have to understand that,
you know, people, players are humans and they have emotions
and they go up and they go down, and you know,
you try to stay positive and he's he's been one
of the most positive athletes of all time. But yes,
(04:39):
you got to Losing does wear on you.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Man.
Speaker 6 (04:42):
It's hard to go to work every day.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
When you're losing, and you when you have his level
of talent and his level of command of an organization,
not just an offense, not just a team. Man, it's
got to be just big time disappointing to him. And
I don't care what field that you work in. You
know people, people are people, and you know you called
him out a week moment and he let people know
(05:05):
high c out and that's fine with me.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Okay, Now you have three games left in the regular season.
It's officially over. The playoff hopes are dashed three years
in a row. Now the franchise will not make it.
Two of those years Burrow missed the majority of the seasons.
For these last three weeks, what are you looking for?
I mean, help us as a fan of what you
(05:28):
are looking for or expecting for these final three games
of the year.
Speaker 5 (05:34):
You're looking for individual growth, particularly on the defensive side.
You're looking for players to really step up that you
know can be a part of your plans in twenty
twenty six.
Speaker 6 (05:43):
That's exclusively.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
You know what the offense can do, you know what
the how they can produce, and they're pretty.
Speaker 6 (05:48):
Much set on offense.
Speaker 5 (05:49):
But defensively, you are looking at the player that who's
going to be on this roster, who can really help
us in twenty twenty six And if those players are
on the team right now, they better show up. And
I guarantee that's exactly what the coaching staff and management.
Speaker 6 (06:05):
Is doing right now. They're trying to.
Speaker 5 (06:07):
Figure out who can elevate that game that can be
a big, big part of a very successful defense because
Al Golden's going to be there. I doubt if you
see any changes, And I know people want changes, they
want somebody's head, they want blood, they want something to
give them hope, which in a negative fashion. However, you
just need some outstanding play from some individuals, and when
(06:29):
you look at it, some of those young players have
stepped up a little bit on the defensive side, and
you just want that continuous growth.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Look, I think we all agree that from the time
he took over and the state of the franchise at
the time, I'm not sure anyone did a better job
than Marvin Lewis did for this franchise as the head coach. Now.
I know that he was here for a decade. His
record was right around five hundred, he never won a
(06:56):
playoff game. I get all that, but the franchise was
in just a complete state of disarray that he had
to come in here, weed out the bad apples, bring
in some good players, bring in some competitive players. And
no doubt about it, Marvin Lewis did do that. I
bring that up because you know, you just talked about it.
(07:17):
They're going to be changes, and of course, the one
thing a lot of people around here start screaming for
and have been for quite some time, is a change
in the head coach. Now, I would argue that, Look,
if they went with Marvin for ten years and did
not let him go, then I don't think there's any
way they're going to make that kind of move with
a head coach.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
Now, I would agree with you one percent, and it's
money on the Marvin Lewis. I always said that, you know,
because since Marvin brought back honor and respect, I thought
he would be a perfect guy for the general manager
position if they ever had a general manager that was
of substance. But yeah, you're I think you're one hundred
(07:57):
percent spot on when you say fans, listen, attention, attention.
If you're looking for hands of the row is just
not going to happen. You had it last year on
the defensive from the defensive coordinator side, and you see
how that worked out. So no, I don't think you're
going to see Zach Taylor go anywhere.
Speaker 6 (08:16):
I think that Super.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
Bowl run has given him probably five six seven years
total and maybe even more. And the way the Browns
Brown family operate, they're not going to panic. They're just
going to state of course, and they're going to try
to add some pieces on defense and maybe even through
free agency, hopefully signed Trey and they're going to give
it another shot.
Speaker 6 (08:36):
And that's just what you're going to happen.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
And that philosophy and that approach is probably.
Speaker 6 (08:41):
Why Joe Burrow has had it.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
That's why he's feeling the way he's feeling, because he wants,
you know, impact players to come in immediately while he's
still at the prime.
Speaker 6 (08:49):
Of his career.
Speaker 5 (08:50):
And as I said to you, Tom while we were
taxing back and forth, right now, you're looking at a
Dan Marino type career for Joe Burrow right now, wasted talent, wasted,
just a absolutely wonderful player that once in a lifetime
player for the Cincinnati Bengals, arguably the best quarterback has
ever played.
Speaker 6 (09:09):
And of course you got to.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
Give Kenny and Gomer some credit there too, But man,
you're just wasting this guy's career at this point in time.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Well there's no doubt about that. So something's got to
give based on what you just said. If they're not
going to make changes, and that means a quarterback is unhappy,
we could be, you know, a major fork in the
road sometime in the not too distant future. One thing
I didn't get to ask you about, and you and
I have talked about this, A very serious series of
concussions ended your career. You wound up in a hospital bed,
(09:39):
and you made the decision, as you've told me before
about with you and your wife and deciding that's it.
What were your thoughts when you saw t Higgins. You know,
he was in concussion protocol. Then he comes out of it.
He plays clearly, hits his head a couple of times
during the game. He passed whatever concussion protocol there was
on the sideline with an independent doctor and then after
(10:01):
the game was back in concussion protocol. What are your
thoughts about probably where he is or would you have
anything to say to him if you could.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
Well, first of all, my family and his family know
each other very well, although I haven't personally met t H. Yeah,
that is a I have watched him, and I have
I have had mixed emotions. Of course, you want to play.
He's so young, he's so talented. I get that. I
heard him say he wanted to be out there for
his teammates. But man, when you get up there in
(10:34):
age brother, when the s comes, it rolls off of
your chest and you no longer that superman with that cape.
You become that human and you start having the ill
effect like I do and other players as well, of
those concussions, especially the accumulative effect. It's something that you
really have to look into it very seriously. And I
think what you will continue to see and monitor that
(10:57):
if he continues to have this, you know you're not
going to have or he probably won't have that ten
year career because obviously the dollars he makes his uh
you know, generational wealth. So at some point in time,
and especially if they're not winning, he's gonna have to
make a decision. But you know, right now, he's young,
he's energetic, youth is on his side, and you know,
he wants to win. He wants to win for the fans,
(11:18):
he wants to play for the fans and all that,
and I get it.
Speaker 6 (11:20):
But the seriousness of concussions.
Speaker 5 (11:22):
People, if it's just this is not some documentary that
you're watching on TV.
Speaker 6 (11:27):
You know I've lived it.
Speaker 5 (11:30):
I've lived it live and I won't say well, but
live and upfront and very personal. So my advice to
him would be just, you know, obviously concussions happen. There's
nothing you can do to prevent him. And you know,
obviously he's making you know, just great catches and his
head hits by the ground, and you know when you look.
Speaker 6 (11:49):
At the concussion.
Speaker 5 (11:50):
I asked the abage person like yourself, Tom Hey, imagine
being in ten car accidents.
Speaker 6 (11:55):
On every Sunday. Yes, pretty much what thaks to.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
So you're human. I don't care how many muscles you have.
I don't care how much you've been spressed. I don't
care how fast you run the forty. Your brain is
in a liquid environment that's getting shaken around and just
like you would be in a car cident.
Speaker 6 (12:11):
So it's just not healthy.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
All right. Last thing I want to ask you about,
and we only have about one minute, and that is
Jermaine Burton. Since you and I last visited, the team
has let him go. A young man, it's been blessed
with all the talent in the world, but for whatever
reason or reasons, things did not work out here. What
would you say to him?
Speaker 5 (12:30):
You know, you said, all the talent in the world,
all the physical talent in the world, the game is
more mental than it is physical. And that's the piece
that if I had an opportunity to say to him,
it's like, you have to figure it out because if
not just run fast, jump high, catch balls, score touchdown.
It's a lot to do with at the end and
out of the game and understanding and you know, really
(12:51):
becoming that professional. You really have to sit down, really
grow and understand what what do you want your career
to look like? What do you when you look back
on your career, are you going.
Speaker 6 (13:00):
To be pleased with yourself?
Speaker 5 (13:01):
Because I can just tell you, Tom, I know so
many guys that when they got to their forties and
fifties and sixties was so regrettable that they made immature
decisions opposed to.
Speaker 6 (13:12):
Becoming a professional.
Speaker 5 (13:13):
And then looking back on it, like myself, I played
ten years. I look back on it and I think
I had a great career. I think I maxed out
my ability as five ten, one hundred and seventy eight pounds.
You know, it did wonder just for my family, so
on and so forth, And that's what that's called legacy.
And you want to look back and at that kid
going to want to look back and have a positive legacy.
And if he doesn't change his ways, and I'm not
saying this was a good fit for him, find a
(13:35):
good fit for yourself, and that way you can look
back and go, I'm very proud of my career.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Jim, thanks you as always for your time and your expertise.
My friend, have a great rest of your Monday.
Speaker 6 (13:45):
Appreciate for having me as always.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
All righty Tim McGee, as always on the morning after
a long as there rippled.
Speaker 1 (13:52):
This is the Bloomberg Money Minute on seven hundred WLW.
Speaker 7 (13:57):
This is a Bloomberg money minute. Job huts may be
on the way at Consulting Giant McKinsey. Sources tell us
the firm has discussed cutting about ten percent of its
head count across non client facing departments. That could amount
to a few thousand positions eliminated in the next eighteen
to twenty four months For the go to consultant for
companies and countries, the firm's revenue growth has flatlined in
(14:20):
the past five years. Checking in on Wall Street, action
Stock's looks set to regain some of Friday's tech driven losses,
Futures are heading for a higher open this morning. Traders
are focused on the November jobs report tomorrow, and Friday
was a good day for Lululemon, with sharesooring close to
ten percent. The yoga war retailer boosted its financial outlook
(14:41):
for the year and announced that its chief executive officer
will step down. The company is now on the hunt
for a new leader. Lululemon has tumbled more than forty
five percent this year, with upstarts such as Lo Yoga
chipping away at its dominance. Corney's Donahope Bloomberg.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
Radio Alright eight forty two on them Morning show is
seven hundred WLW. We do it every single Monday. We
call it Mondays with Marty. You call him Marty, I
call him Dad. Good morning. How was your weekend, young man?
Not bad?
Speaker 8 (15:11):
Stayed in, Well, it was too bad to go out,
so just watch some football and whatever else I found interesting.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
All right, I'm gonna get to the football part in
a minute, because I'm gonna ask you to pick your
playoff winners for the opening round of the college football
playoff that begins on Friday and into all day Saturday.
But first Saints First. Since we last got together, the
Reds made a serious offer to Kyle Schwarber five years,
(15:37):
one hundred and twenty five million dollars, and Nick Crawl
has since come out and said that they were still
spending within their budget limitations looking ahead of twenty twenty six.
Having said all that, they didn't sign him. Phillies get
him five years, one hundred and fifty million, an average
of five million per year, better than the Reds offer.
(16:00):
What is a fan supposed to make of your able
to make that contract offer to Schwarber? But it looks
like they're not going to use that money to maybe
go get somebody else.
Speaker 8 (16:13):
Well, I think it was a bad a bad choice
of words by whoever made the you know, there was
a there was an actual statement, a tribute to somebody
in the organization that they made that offer to him
because they knew they figured it would increase ticket sales
or something to that effect. And that was a bad
choice of words if someone said that, and I'm sure
(16:35):
they heard about it as a result of becoming a
public issue. Yeah, an actual inclination would be, if you
had that kind of money and you're willing to spend
it for one while, would you not be willing to
spend it or some of it on another hit. I
don't know that there was another one out there that
brought all of the attributes to the table that that
(16:57):
that Kyle Schwarber did, being from Middletown, being the pre
eminent right now home run hitter in baseball, being a
great clubhouse guy, you check all the boxes. I don't
think there's anybody else out there other than maybe Peter Alonzo,
and I think he'd be a poor second. I just think,
you know, you got to wait and see what happens,
because we've known now for three seasons that this club
(17:19):
needed a bonafide home run hitter, and some of the
things that bother me sometimes as I see them side
guys and nobody else wants. You know, they'll tell you
that that's to fill out rosters in their minor league system.
Sometimes I believe that, sometimes it's obviously not true. I
just think that this, this lack of power in the
(17:41):
middle of the lineup has been the single biggest culprit
that this ball club has had over the last two
or three years, and I think something has to be
done about that. It certainly needs to be done this
off season, because you know, the clock is ticking on
a lot of these guys. If you have good talent,
and I think this club does. I think it's got
pitching like we've never seen in the history of this franchise,
(18:05):
and they've got to do something about that. And this
off season, this winter leading into the spring, is very
very important as far as the ball club is concerned.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
Don't you think, Dad, that they're going to have to
bite the bullet if they're not going to spend a
lot of money in free agency. And look, there are
guys that could still go out there and get but
if you've made the decision, that's probably not what you're
going to do. Are they ultimately going to have to
bite the bullet and trade one of these pitchers, whoever
that might be.
Speaker 8 (18:38):
Oh, I think one of them will get traded if
they're going to make a deal, rather than if they're
going to turn their back on free agency and decide
that we're going to make a trade and they have
an interested partner, then you're going to have to give
up a pitcher. Yeah, I think so, and I still
maintain and I'll stand by it till the day. I
(18:59):
would trade Home bail it Hunter Green right now, I
would trade him right now. I just get blows my mind.
These peoples are one of the top pitchers in baseball.
You know, you can't get away. They got enough pitching
depth that they can absorb whatever loss there is by
trading Hunter Green, and they can break the bank. I
(19:21):
don't know what the reluctance is, because I do believe
now during the course of this past season there was
talk and there was interest in trading him this offseason,
despite what anybody says, I believe that, and so I
think this is the guy that you trade. You can
get a lot for him, because I truly believe when
(19:41):
his contract runs out, assuming he doesn't have a debilitating injury,
God forbid that would limit his effectiveness as long as
he's in the major leagues, he's going to jump so
fast when his contract runs out in twenty twenty nine.
And if you know that now, and you know you
have the kind of pitching depth that can stand you
(20:02):
in good stead even trading him, I would trade him
right now.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
All right, Let's get to the college football Playoff, which
begins this weekend. And basically the way it works is
and back to back weekend, you'll have a game on
a Friday night, and then the following day you'll have
three games. That olds true this weekend, it will hold
true in round two next weekend. So let's start with
(20:26):
the games, and we begin with the game that will
be played this Friday night, with the winner facing the
top seed Indiana Hoosiers. That's between Alabama and Oklahoma. Who
do you like?
Speaker 8 (20:40):
I like Alabama.
Speaker 6 (20:42):
I don't know why I do.
Speaker 8 (20:44):
I don't even think they should be in this mix
right now, I really truly don't. I think that I'll
go to my grave knowing that they screw in the
Notre Dame gut was as big as anything I've ever seen.
But I think I think Alabama will beat Oklahoma.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
That's my pick, Okay, all right? And then the other game,
which most feel will be uber competitive, will be the
ten seed Miami Hurricanes taking on the seven seed Texas
A and m Aggie's with the winner facing the number
two seed the Ohio State Buckeyes. Who wins Miami v.
A and M.
Speaker 8 (21:20):
Well, that's a tough that says, you know what, I'm
gonna go with Miami. I you know, the former Georgia
quarterback has done such a great job this season for them,
and I think they're playing extremely well right now. Texas
A and m I don't know. I just have a
feeling that Miami will win that football game and it'll
(21:41):
be them against the Bucks.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
All right. Then we get to the two games, and
a lot of people think on paper anyway or not
all that competitive. I'm not so sure about this game.
I think this has a chance to be competitive for
multiple reasons. And that would be number six Old Miss
against number eleven two Lane, the winner facing the three
seed Georgia Bulldogs Tulane the Old Miss who do you like?
Speaker 8 (22:06):
You know, I'm not, I'm not I'm inclined to go
with you because you obviously you think that Tulane is
going to show up bigger than most people think that.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
That's why I think that it would be a mistake
in this case to just rule them like they're going
to get rolled over. I think they've got a very
very good team. They don't play the schedule that Old
Miss plays. I understand that, but what with the Lane
Tiffin situation and all those other things, the game is
at Ole Miss. But I think this has a chance
to be a good game.
Speaker 8 (22:37):
I don't disagree with that. I think I think that
the Blane kiffn thing's a big deal, although they've had
enough time now to recover from that. It's not like
they had to play last weekend, so they've had extra
time to to recover from him defecting the LSU. But
I just think it's hard to pick against them in
(22:59):
the conference they playing, and in the conference at TU
Lane plays, and I'm still gonna go with the favorite
and pick hole mister win that game.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
Okay, then I'm assuming that the last game with the
winner advancing the number four seed Texas Tech. I think
everybody's just in a state of shocked. The James Madison
is in this thing, and Notre Dame is not taking
on the five seed Oregon Ducks.
Speaker 8 (23:21):
Yeah, you gotta pick. You gotta go with Oregon. There,
you gotta pick Oregon. Uh, it would be cool to
see James Madison win. Uh quite honestly, you know I would.
I would be inclined to pull for James Madison, being
a Virginia native as I am. And the fact that they,
uh they they sent a prepared a little bit more
Kurt Signetty going to Indiana, and uh so I'm gonna
(23:44):
I'm gonna pick Oregon, but I'd love to see James
Madison win that game.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
All right, Well, we got your picks for the opening round,
and we'll get your picks for the next round. And man,
there could be some killer games on tap next Yes,
there could be New Year's Eve. The Mighty Bucks will
be in prime time. They are the New Year's Eve
game at seven point thirty against Miami or Texas. Say it, am,
all right, have a great rest of the day. Luke
(24:08):
is back until you got one where he makes his
way to the Rose Bowl.
Speaker 8 (24:13):
Okay, I got one point to make for you, Yes, sir,
I just want to recommend to all the Bengals fans
the next time they go to a home football game
under snowy conditions, bring their snowblowerway. That's all I got,
That's all I got.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
All right, I'll tell you later. I have a great
rest of your day. We love you, talk to you soon.
