Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're waking up in the morning time.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Well, good morning, Julie on the job as our show's
career mentor. It's International Women's Day this weekend, if you
didn't know that. And Kiss has been celebrating Women's History
Month all month and we'll continue to do so. Julie,
the biggest thing that I hear amongst really any age
demographic is advocacy. And I thought you'd be a good
person to talk about advocating for yourself in the workplace.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
What's your number one tip on that?
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Know your value? Absolutely, know what your value is at work?
And this is the kind of statement that makes women cringe. Well,
wait a minute, I'm sure they see my value. I
don't know exactly what it is, but I'm still here.
But can you state what value you bring?
Speaker 1 (00:50):
It starts there.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Once you understand what value you have, then you can
start to decide how to use that through kind of
understanding and using the power your Your power comes from
your value and understanding your value. Once you're clear on
what your value is, you decide how you're going to
use that power that that value gives you. Then you
(01:11):
can decide what to do with it. And frankly, it
might be you might decide to do something with a
nonprofit in the community. You might decide to utilize that
to create a career path for you along with your leader.
But that understanding all this stuff starts to from the
inside out.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Starts with knowing yourself on the inside. Where's a really
good place for someone to start who just shows up
to work every day and is like, I don't know,
I do the job that I do. Like, how do
you start to really separate what your value and your
worth is versus just kind of living in your head,
you know, and you just you got to learn how
to know what your value is.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
And sometimes that might be hard to start.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Yeah, it is. And I think, so here's the here's
the phrase I use or the model I use value
power impact. So here's how I would put it. Value
is what I know to be true about myself and
what others see to be true. Because I think you've
got to put that other piece in there, because we
talk about oh no, it does no matter what other
people think it does. I mean, if I'm walking around
(02:11):
saying I'm a great singer, I'm not. You know, other
people would tell me I'm not. And so it's almost
like this check and so value is what I know
to be true about myself plus what others see to
be true. And then my power is how and where
I choose to focus my value, and then my impact
is you know, kind of why it matters.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
And that's a good place to start.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Once you do that, then you move on to the
next phase of advocating for yourself amongst your peers and
your boss.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
And do you have a quick tip on that.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Imagine yourself in an elevator with your boss several levels
up and they look at you and say, hey, TIFFs,
nice to meet you. What do you do here? What's
your value here? Why do we keep you around? Anything
that smacks like that even tell me about yourself. Be
able to say, be able to state with certainty why
you are valuable to your organization. You're still there, so
you do bring value. It's just going to that next
(03:02):
level of being able to articulate what that.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Is, okay. Julie Bouki Julie on the job on social media.
If you liked that and.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
You want a little bit more, she's a great place
to stuff when you scroll whatever platform you can find
her there.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
I appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
