Speaker 1 (00:10):
It's early, but Merry Christmas.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Merry Christmas.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
It's Randy and Robin actually Unfiltered with Randy and Robin.
Welcome into our podcast, and we're gonna we're gonna talk
about Christmas. Yeah, it's one of our both of our
favorite times of year. We honeymooned on on Christmas and
we'll talk about that in the podcast today because that
got really interesting.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Well, yes, we will talk about it.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Uh, first of all, Robin, what and I'm finding that
I learned things about you in this podcast that I
really didn't know because I started thinking about what did
we to talk about this? It's something we haven't really
discussed much, maybe in passing. But what was like Christmas
like for you as a kid?
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Oh, Christmas was always magical and wonderful. My parents did
a wonderful job, and my mom of making Christmas really special.
And it's something that I've always tried to do every
year with my children as well. I mean, with whatever
I had and with whatever they had, they always made
Christmas so magical. And that's why I love Christmas so
much and I always want to make it a special
(01:19):
magical time.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Where with some friends the other night and we were
we were going around talking about our favorite Christmas present. Yes,
what was your favorite gift that you remember as a kid.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
So as a child, my favorite gift that I remember
just being really happy and surprised about was I got
a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader set. And I was like, wow,
you know, my brother's getting dinosaurs, but that was really
special and exciting.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
So that's what I That's what I told people when
I started dating you, They said, who you're dating. That's
a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader, right, because you have that look.
I mean you look like, hey, this girl was a
Dallas Cowboy cheerleads close as.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
I eber came was being a Dolly at Madison High School.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Anyway, my childhood growing up with Christmas, Mom and Dad
always made it special, even though we didn't have a
lot of money. The best time I remember as a
kid was Dad pulled off a surprise. He'd got my
sister and iyes before my little brother came along, who
(02:22):
was nine years younger than me.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
He was the.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Surprise in the family and Mom and dad pulled off
a surprise. Mom took us somewhere I don't remember, took us.
Let's go get a piece of candy at the store.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Whatever. Yeah, I don't know, whay we went. Well, we
got back and Dad's all excited. And when he opens
the door, did you see him? Did you see him?
See what Santa Claus did?
Speaker 3 (02:49):
He just left?
Speaker 1 (02:50):
You didn't see him taking off? What? No?
Speaker 2 (02:53):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:53):
What?
Speaker 2 (02:54):
What?
Speaker 1 (02:56):
And so we come in and next to the trees,
he got brand new.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Bic Wow, and I get the fanciest bike ever. It
was like you know it was it was like it
wasn't like a wasn't like a ten speed bike. It
was a bike, you know, like with the handle bars
and and uh, you know, a banana seat on it.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
But it had three speed. It had gears.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Is that the one you broke your arm on and handbrakes?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Yes, when I got run over by car, I was
That's another that's for another podcast completely right there. We'll
get into that. But that's probably my favorite Christmas. I
remember as a kid.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
When did Christmas stop being so magical? I can tell
you for me, And it was always magical and wonderful
and always even after this, you know, my mom got
but you know she well, as you age, your parents
make more money and you start getting really nicer, gifts.
But I remember feeling less enchanted about Christmas when I
(03:56):
had to start helping rap presents, like they just start
putting him in. My mom would just start putting him
in boxes or whatever and then put a number on it.
And my brother hated wrapping gifts and he did a
really bad job at it, so we'd never have to
do it. And I was really good at it, so
I felt like I had to wrap everybody's gifts and
that made it a little bit way, a little bit
(04:19):
less because it was like a lot more work. But
that was like, you know, middle school, right.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
I'm not sure if Christmas. I wonder if we ever
lost Christmas.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Christmas. I just don't remember a ton of gifts at Christmas.
I do overboard, Yeah, well we didn't. We didn't have
the money to go away overboard, so we just did.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
I don't know if she had the money or not,
but she did it.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
I mean we you know, we always got together with family.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
No, that's exactly.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
I don't remember much gifts, but I remember time with
my family.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Time with my We always went to Dallas to visit
family too, and it was just us four, So I
always looked forward to seeing extended family, because a small
family unit, it's me, my brother, my mom, and my dad,
and so I always look forward to going to see
extended family in Dallas and see my aunt and my grandma.
But you know a lot of that goes away too
(05:17):
when you know, the matriarch passes away and then you know,
my grandma passed away, so they're went that gathering place
and then eventually aunt passed away. But that's kind of
one of the sad things too. As you get older,
with Christmas things change.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Is that is that just because we get older, or
is that because our society has changed.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
I don't know, because right now I would say, you know,
as a child, I'm like, yes, Dallas Cowboy Trailer's at
right now, what I consider just the most amazing Christmas
is to have all my children with me in one spot.
And I think my kids would agree. They all keep
telling me the best Christmas aside from the obviously magical cruise,
I mean that was pretty special, but to the cruise away,
(06:01):
take you know, all the expensive presents away. Their favorite
Christmas has been when we all come together and I
think we talked about another podcast, family Games. Yes, they said, Mom,
that was the best Christmas ever. And that was a
couple of years ago, and I just we you know,
planned all kinds of just dumb, goofy games, but it
(06:22):
was so fun and I had, you know, a bunch
of gift bags lined up with all kinds of different
stuff with gifts scroll gups, and it was just super fun.
And they still they want to do it. So every
year it's like, are you going to do games that
we're going to do games?
Speaker 3 (06:34):
You know, yeah, and you you want to hang on
to that while you can, because it goes away, I know,
I know, you know, like for example, this year, my
one daughter is working in retail. She lives in Tennessee with.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Her husband, your youngest yes.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Yeah, Tale and Rich and so they're in Tennessee. So
she's in retail. So she's not going to get off
for Christmas. No, so she's not going to be home
for Christmas. Fortunately, Kelsey and Mark Kelsey's my oldest daughter,
her and Mark and my granddaughter Avery.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
They live here.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
They live close to us, but they also have to
split time between all the family.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Right, her husband's family and then her other side of
her family. And so yeah, I mean yes, and I
have to share that too, and you know, my oldest
husband's family and they've gone to Norway. You know, every
they've gone to Norway, I think twice now for Christmas
(07:34):
at least once.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
So our Christmas now, our famili's Christmas is never on
Christmas Day.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Well it is like last year when we did the crew,
So basically I planned Christmas around when we have River,
so our whole lives are playing. I plan our whole
lives basically around very much the youngest the youngest of course,
and so when when we have River is when we
do Christmas. And so last year we it was my
year for Christmas, so I planned that cruise and the
(08:02):
whole family went and I dropped everybody on a ship
for ten days and we had a glass. This year,
it won't start till River comes home. And that's I
think around the twenty eighth and so yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Results, so mom and Daddy have Christmas, so we have.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
You get to go do Christmas. Just like on our honeymoon.
I didn't have River that year, so the whole family
and that's also the year my kids go to the
other side of the other side of the family. So
we just kind of still do it like that. Even
though they're young adults and you know, living their lives,
but they always we always plan it around when we
have River, the youngest, and so yeah, so this year,
(08:41):
me and you are going to go explore somewhere and
then we're going to do Christmas when River comes home
and everyone's going to come home.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
We've got a couple of explorations where we're looking at.
We're looking at some adventurous things that we we sure
are one thing not adventurous. And place we love is
East Tennessee.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yes, I know we didn't get to see the Came
Out on Christmas show at Dollywood last year, but we
did go in the summer.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Christmas at Dollywood. Is that's magical.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
It is so magical. It really makes me feel all
those special Christmas you know things.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
And we're going to go out there for a few
days before Christmas this year. Yeah, and spend a little
time there. And that's that place is special to us
because that's where we honeymooned. Sure, we got married in
the middle of COVID in June, or I proposed in June.
We get married in October.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Yeah, and you're really pushing that wedding. And now I
realized it was because I think your lease was up.
They're like, no, we have to get.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
Married to get married, move in with you. Yeah, make honest.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
Exactly. Now that I look back on it, I'm like, man,
he sure is pushing this. I kind of wanted away
for Remy to be able to You had one son
in the Air Force, and they wouldn't let him come
to the wedding. He was supposed to give me away
and other daughter got COVID three days before the wedding.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
Yeah, COVID basically caused the Air Force not to let
him come ten miles down the road to your wedding. Yep.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
He was at Randolph at the time. They had They
had him there for some reason. And we got married to.
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Anyway, back back to the honeymoon. So we honeymooned, uh
wind the week before Christmas, went to the Smoky Mountains,
and we really wanted to go to Dollywood.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
You've never been to Dollywood?
Speaker 2 (10:26):
I never. Yeah, It's always been a dream of mind
to go to Dollywood.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
So we we go and I get this romantic cabin
up in the Smoky Mountains. Yes, and we stayed up
in the mountains and uh we they we would go
on the website and say no, Dollywood's only allowing so
many people then because of COVID.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
So one day I.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Thought, well, let's just drive into the entrance to Dollywood,
just see if they'll let us in. And we did
and they said, oh.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Sure, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
I was so excited.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Yeah, so so we did. Did we do two days
at Dollywood? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (10:59):
We wanted two day pass once they led us in
and we went back the next day because you can't
really do it all on one day.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
No, it's a great thing park anyway, So we did
Dollywood and the end of the week, it's coming up.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
We were gonna fly.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Home Christmas Eve, so it we'd be here for Christmas Day. Well,
I'm watching the weather and there's a huge snowstorm coming
in Christmas Eve.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Yeah, and we flew into Nashville, so it's still like
a three hour drive to get back to the airport,
and vice versa incident Knoxill. We flew in Nashville for
that time.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
Anyway, So I thought, let's just stay in our first
Christmas to be a white Christmas here in the Smoky Mountains.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
How cool is that? Right?
Speaker 3 (11:40):
And we agreed, So we changed our flights and then
I contact pardon me, contacted the cabin place who were staying.
They said, no, we can't. We've got somebody else coming
to the cabin. You can't get it. So I'm scrambling
to find a place to stay and I found this
really nice airbnb.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
This like a bed and breakfast.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Couple had this.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Like ten twelve thousand square foot house that had multiple
bedroom suits in it and.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Each book the best one with the fireplane.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
This bedroom had a fireplace and a and a jacuzzi tub.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
And all this the stor it had a hot tub outside,
and so we're like, yes, hot tub in the snow
under a gazebo. So we decided we booked it. And
they were on our way there and I'm like, oh,
you need to get a swim suit because hot tubs outside.
We need to, you know, look presentable. And I walked
out of Marshalls and it started snowing, and I mean heavy,
(12:39):
wet snow. It was beautiful snow, and so we made
our way to the airbnb.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
We had our head over to the airbnb. We get
there and people are really nice and they're welcoming sand
they got some snacks for us, and they're telling us
about this incredible breakfast they're going to make for us the.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Next morning, and and uh, we're excite.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
You We're like, oh yeah, we're gonna go out and
get in that hot tub and the snow and you know.
And well we're there about an hour and the power
goes out. Yeah, I mean, it's it's dark, and what
what is happening? We find out all this wet, heavy
snow starts breaking limbs off of trees and breaking power lines,
(13:21):
and transformers start blowing up everywhere all around that part
of the country.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
So here we are now at the airbnb, no power,
no hot tub.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
That deals over.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
The only sort of good thing about it was in
our bedroom, the suite that we had, there was a
gas fireplace that was a little however, it was on
a thirty minute timer.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
But you know what, we did have some port, We
did have some porth thought we brought I brought like
some checutery, snacks and some wine, and we had plenty
of warm clothes. I mean, so we could sit by
the fire, eat some snacks, drink some wine and keep
turning it on until we got sleepy. And then what
(14:11):
I mean, we made a palette on the floor.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
Anyway, so and the next morning we drive out creep
out because we get to get back to Nashville to
get on the plane. And we get toward Nashville and
we're trying to find a place to eat lunch before
we go to the airport. Nothing's opens Christmas Day except
waffle House.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Good old waffle House.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
So we had we celebrated our first Christmas meal at
the So we woke.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Up to the most amazing beautiful snow views. And I
still use that clip that I took up us driving
out of that Airbnb in the snow, and that drive
was just so beautiful.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
Yeah, it was. It was incredible. Anyway, that was our
first Christmas.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
YEP, and then our second one is when I did
the whole family games. And then our third one we
went back to Dellywood. That's when they had that bombing
over the Nashville and we also flew in and out
of Nashville. And then also was it that's also when
Southwest Airlines wasn't simultaneous with their meltdown.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Is that the Southwest meltdown? Then? I think it was
because it took us.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
It was simultaneous with that bombing and we could not
get a flight back. In fact, on the way to
the airport, they were already you know, stomach flights and
ours had been canceled, so I'm trying to I could
not get a flight back to San Antonio, but I
did manage, and I was on hold forever, so I
had to do it through the app and just pay
the money versus like using our credit for the other
(15:36):
flight and just get us to Austin.
Speaker 3 (15:39):
At least we made it to Austin and it had
one of the kids figure submarringes back. Anyway, let's talk
a little bit about my history with Christmas in San Antonio.
When I first started working at kJ ninety seven, I
wrote a Christmas song. I don't even remember it now,
but I went in the studio recorded it. I think
(16:02):
I have an old reel to real tape of it somewhere.
I recorded it and then I bought brought in all
of the DJs from kJ to sing along on the chorus.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
And I can'try. It was about Christmas.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
So that was just kind of a deal, just hey,
we can play it on the radio, be fun, and
it'd be our musical Christmas card. Well, a few years
later I decided to do the same thing again. And
I had always loved this song called Tennessee Christmas song
written by Amy Grant and her then husband Gary Chapman,
(16:38):
who happened to be one of my favorite songwriters. Well,
I love that song, and I thought, is tender Tennessee Christmas?
And I thought another San Antonio Christmas? But hey, that's perfect.
I'll I'll just record it and it'll be something we
can play a couple of times on the radio, you know,
for a bit. And so went into the studio with
(17:03):
Michael and Ronnie Morales here in San Antonio, over at
Studio M which is still in operation, and those guys
super talented brothers. Michael had some pop hits back during
that time, and of course they've got Grammys for Tohanto
stuff and they're very successful. Anyway, we recorded San Antonio
(17:26):
Christmas and I thought, I need to get a country
singer to sing on it with me, and I got
Rick Trevino to do it, and Michael and I jumped
in the car, took a recorder, went up to Austin
and Rick was in a studio up there, and we
hooked up our gear to the studio, taught him the song,
(17:47):
had him sing it. We got all of his tracks
laid down, and then we came back and later on
I recorded all mine and we put it together and
we played it on the air and as San Antonio.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Christmas, the one with the YouTube video too, or is
that separate.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
The one with the YouTube videos just me. We did
two versions of it, one with Rick, one without Rick,
just because if we ran into any copyright issues or
talent issues or anything like that, we would have it.
And so it got played every year. Well, one of
(18:23):
the bosses one year said, you know, I think you
sound pretty good on that. Let's just play just your version,
And so it got played on kJ ninety seven every year.
Then they started playing it on on Q one oh one,
you know, at the Christmas station. They would play it
there and still gets a little bit of play off
(18:45):
and on now throughout thirty four people want to hear
it years later. Yeah, I mean, it's just it's such
a well written song. Amy and Gary did such a
great job with that song, and you know, thanks to
modern technology, I sounded halfway decent on.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
It's so good. You're so honest. But you sing it
live with Rick at my work party?
Speaker 3 (19:06):
Oh that's right. Yeah, Oh man, I forgot about that. Yeah, anyway,
and I haven't done that very often. I haven't sang
it live very much because that's it's not an easy
song to sing too.
Speaker 2 (19:18):
Well, neither is a national anthem. But you knock it
out of the park.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
Well, I'll pull that off, I guess. Anyway.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
That's that's my I guess my contribution to to uh
Christmas here in San Antonio.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
One of the cool things is.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
Back in the Gulf Wars are guys fighting over overseas.
People would send them m P three's of that song
at Christmas.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
It's an m P three.
Speaker 1 (19:49):
They would, they would, they would listen to it online.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
That's wonderful. And and now like even if people I've
heard people tell you when they were stationed over season,
maybe not in the war, but even stationed overseas that
they like to hear that song. That's why I really
feel like Gil should play it more.
Speaker 3 (20:06):
Yeah, it brought them back to home. Brought them back
to home. By the way, you can, uh, there's a
YouTube video. Just search San Antonio Christmas Randy Carroll a
little pop up and you can see this little cheesy.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
Video made with your kids.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
I love it, but you.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
Can hear the song and check it out. And we've
got a great city for Christmas.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
We do. It's beautiful. The River Walk. I do want
to go down there too.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Yeah, we haven't been yet this year. Uh, And that's
always a lot of fun to go down there sometimes
jump on the.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Barges and eat somewhere yummy.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
Eat someplace good, and spend a bunch of money at
Starbucks to get cocoa.
Speaker 1 (20:46):
Or whatever it is they have.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
And of course the lights along the river Walk always
always a blast, so beautiful, and I you know, we
got all these places like the North Star boots when
they light them up, that's that's iconic San Antonio Christmas, Yes,
right there. And then what are there? What are the
great Christmas things we have in San Antonio? We got
(21:14):
the River, we got.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
I mean, Texas always does a nice Christmas and SeaWorld
always does Christmas. And then there's things in different communities.
I think Selma has something out there that's pretty big
and special.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
And and you lived not far from Ed Clark's Christmas.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
House when I went to Madison High School.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
I don't know if a lot of people remember Ed
Clark's Christmas House. This is a guy who lived over
off of O'Connor and Nacodochius.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Near Stall or something.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
I mean I didn't live near near him, but in
the same same.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Area, and he had a house there, and his wife
had passed away, and she had loved Christmas and she
had all these Christmas nickknacks. So he didn't live in
this house, but he kept it. And I think he
might have lived in the house next door. I don't know,
but he kept that house as a tribute to her
(22:12):
and filled it full of Christmas nick knacks.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
Its beautiful. I remember driving by.
Speaker 1 (22:17):
It decorated and all the lot.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
I went in it several times and talked to him
through the years. Really yeah, yeah, And that's how I
kind of know about Ed and his wife.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
And we never read articles and then you know, we
all would go buy it in high school and stuff.
But so, like, what about all my Christmas stuff? If
something happened to me, would you would you just get
rid of it? Or would you decorate with it? What
would you do with all of it? It's a lot,
(22:51):
all my trees, So you would give it note gone over,
hopefully at least let my kids.
Speaker 1 (23:01):
No, of course I would.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Let's thing you talk about that.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
That well, I'm just saying he did this wonderful tribute
for his wife.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
Yeah, and it was cool.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Anybody that was at Clark's Christmas how some of you
will remember going there and then do you remember wind Crest,
the wind Crest light up?
Speaker 2 (23:17):
I mean that was the place to drive through when
you were looking at Christmas lights with your family. I
remember driving through with I mean writing through with my family.
Speaker 3 (23:24):
And that was kind of an area where the kind
of the well healed people lived at that time, and
they spent a lot of money they did.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
It was like competition.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
Yeah, they had a big competition to so you could
have the best fanciest.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
But that's back when Windsor Park Mall was still a
thing and you know.
Speaker 3 (23:45):
Yeah that that area was was really booming. Then everything's
kind of moved on out, you know, past that now.
Speaker 1 (23:52):
But I would go there with the kids.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
And let them see the lights, and they always enjoyed it.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
And I remember driving through there with my kids too.
Now we just do big party buses with the all
stands and we don't do any driving, that's true.
