I would do the same if I were you. Under
two hundred and two hundred dollars for the year, They'll
come out twice. Make sure the ac is ready to go.
Make sure the furnace is ready to go. Go to

Lekazy's the decordinator at Muskeigo, is gonna sit in studio
(00:44):
and we'll be paying close attention to the bracket show
that starts at ten o'clock on By twenty four and
we'll comment on some of the brackets and what's going
on with that. We're trying to reach out to Matt Hensler,
the head football coach at Lake Geneva Badger. We're gonna
talk to him for a couple of minutes in studio
with me for the next couple of segments. Justin Mirian
(01:04):
he is an official basketball official, football official, and they
got some stuff going on with people that are interested
in becoming a basketball official. We'll talk to Justin about that.
Nine Down with Chillis is going to join us. Don
and I have known each other a long time. He
hosted a journey House college sports show on ninety seven
point three and if you don't know, ninety seven point
(01:27):
three has changed, They've moved. It's now a music station.
And I'm going to talk to Donn about what he's
doing with his shows and how you can continue to
listen to what he's doing and looking forward to that
until we get a hold of Matt Hensler. Glad. Justin
came a little early, Justin, how you been been good?
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Thanks?
Speaker 1 (01:45):
A hold on this one. Yeah, that's yours. You can
turn that off. Yeah, there you go, Thank you. You're
all set. What game did you have last night?
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Our crew had the Battle of New berl and.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Throw the I was a little surprised to me. It
was a little bit of an upset I guess the
old cliche throw the records out when those two teams
play pretty good game.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Huh.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, it was a really good game.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
You know.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Rovalies are always fun.
Speaker 5 (02:09):
Both communities bring it each night, and Eisenhower ended up
with more points at the end.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Of the day.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Man, I knew Berlin West was they were ranked I
think in the top ten and was rolling a little bit.
So the great win for coach Kern and the coaching
staff over at Eisenhower. How long have you been an
official for football?
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Football?
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Probably a little over fifteen years.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
In basketball basketball just under twenty five years, but overall officiating.
I also used to do soccer, so a little more
than twenty five years appreciating.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
So what made you get into it?
Speaker 5 (02:44):
Yeah, so, I mean I started when I was twelve
and just, you know, something to do and really enjoyed
the sport. In the crazy youth soccer world. Man, I
would play in the tournaments on Saturdays and Sundays and
ref between the games we didn't play, so I never
left the field on weekend. And basketball was a passion,
so got into that and then a lot of basketball
(03:05):
refs do football after years and years of you should
do football.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
You should do football. I finally caved and here we are.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Hey, your whole crew is kind of basketball guy.
Speaker 5 (03:15):
Yeah, we are very good basketball officials, working hard at
football and really, you know, excited to be out there.
There's there's a need for football officials, just as there
is for basketball. I know we'll get into that later,
but you know, for those listing like high school sports,
there's certainly an opportunity to get involved and have the
best seat in the house.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
And look, none of you guys do it for the money,
you don't. But but as a kid, this is a
pretty good part time job, right yeah.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
I mean on the football side, I have four youth
football games right after this today. You're making seventy five
bucks a game. It's a couple hundred dollars on a Saturday.
I don't know where you're gonna make it and choose
kind of when you can work. And certainly, you know
it's it's a good opportunity to take a little cash.
But but also I mean, you know, the enjoyment of
being out there and having fun with the kids.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Quay, where do you go after this? What games are
you doing?
Speaker 5 (04:05):
There's a six six set game at mgwanago. So someone
else is covering the first two and then I'll go
and finish out the last.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
So the AAYFL tournament. Yeah, so they are sponsor of
this show and my twenty four stuff. I'll tell you
what in the commercial I'm Aaron today. Go out and
support these kids, Go out and support this community, go
out and support these coaches. Look, you go to these
tournament games for free, bring twenty with you, Buy a
hot dog, buy some popcorn. You know they make some
(04:35):
money on that. I think the aa YFL does as
good a job as anybody in the state, maybe in
the Midwest at teaching kids the importance of playing football
playing it safely, and they've really adjusted how they go
about practices and things like that. I'm impressed with those guys.
Speaker 5 (04:53):
Yeah, it's a really cool atmosphere. You talk about Friday
nights and then then a Saturday at some of the
high schools, I mean, football the weekends is popping. And
when you're at these a YFL games, ask the concession
stand what they're popular for and known for. Everyone's got
a little special to look at you.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Of what they great advice? Man, I should have known that. Yeah,
I am telling you when you go out to kennam Rain.
They're known for these for their laser dogs. That I
know because I best you're out there, said you gotta
try a laser dog. I said, no, no, I'm good.
He goes, no, try one. And every time I go
out there, Now, that's what they're knowing for and I
(05:30):
love that. Do you work with the same crew for
your youth games and it's a different crew than you
do with your high school?
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Correct? Correct? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (05:39):
For the youth working with some other folks of the
high school is particularly there.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
It's an interesting dynamic.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
But you know, going back to my soccer days where
you kind of rotate between people basketball back in the day, Mike,
when you were coaching, it was really the same three
guys every Tuesday and Friday night.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
It's evolving now and it's a little bit more of
a mixed individual bag in high basketball.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Well, and they started that right at the end. I
think the last two years were when I was at
Martin Luther and it kind of ticks me off from
the beginning until I till I talked to you guys
and you said, look, here's what we're we have to
do this. We have two veteran officials. We have a
third a young usually young somebody that has gone through
(06:23):
the youth and maybe JV, but now they're kind of
getting ready for varsity. And what we're doing is we're
we are basically mentoring them and we're teaching them. And
at halftime we'll talk about positioning and any mistakes they made.
But if you don't yell at that at them, if
you have an issue, come to us. And all of
a sudden, I went, oh, my goodness, they're doing this
(06:44):
to make this pool of officials stronger, and I thought,
that's a really good idea.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Yeah, it's a mix.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
You know, you put your coaching hat on and you
might have a talented freshman or sophomore that you're going
to bring in the mix, but you're not going to
play them. What's four or five other freshmen sophomores. If
you can help it right, you got your team, your roster.
It's no different than officials. I go back to my
personal experience when I started and broke into varsity. I
was with peerce and you want to talk about none
of us on the crew at the time were in
(07:12):
some of those moments and we had to wrestle our
way through and talk about you know, that's not really
a recipe for success. So it's been a positive improvement
where you can have people that have been around the
block and people that get exposure to different opportunities in
a position where they have a chance to succeed. No
different than what you would do as a coach or
a fan of a program of putting people in positions
(07:34):
where they're ready.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
And you know what I think, once, and I hope
you agree with me, once coaches understood with what you
guys were trying to accomplish here. I think I think
most coaches are like, Okay, now I get it. I
even though maybe he didn't sell the call, or maybe
I thought that was the wrong call, or he was
in the right position, I'm going to talk to this
(07:57):
guy who's done one hundred of my games to say,
did you tell tell Charlie or whoever? The the newer
official is, Hey, just make sure that you sell the call,
make sure you do a better job of that. Or
he can have a conversation with me. He doesn't have
to say, you know, hey, don't talk to me kind
of stuff. Let's get him in that kind of groove.
(08:17):
And I think most coaches are happy with that, right.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Yeah, I put the educational hat on.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
You know, there's credibility that's there and the opportunity to
say something. But also as officials, certainly we're going to
make mistakes. Were human to coaches, players, everybody makes mistake.
It's a human and wonderful game. But there are times
that these newer officials, in these moments that maybe they're
ready for but just need the experience get them right.
And they have the credibility of someone on the floor
that say, hey, Mike, he got it right. Yeah, good one.
(08:44):
That means something. But when you're the new guy and
you say that and there's no relationship, it's no different
than any other walk of life. That doesn't mean much
without that relationship established and the credibility of years of
built up experience and believability. For those in the gym,
do you have thick skin? I work at it. When
(09:04):
I put the stripes on, I do a pretty good
job of playing the role.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Was that easy? Is it easier now that? Look, you
walk into a gym, You've done most of these guys games, right,
you have now gotten to the point when you walk
in as a coach, I would go, okay, we'll be
okay tonight. Right, But in the beginning, and even at
the youth level, how hard we lose so many kids
that think they want to do this, and then you
(09:30):
get parents yelling at them, you get coaches yelling, and
they go, look, I could work at McDonald's. Nobody's yelling
at me over there. How hard was that for you
to kind of get through that?
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Well?
Speaker 5 (09:40):
I had experience in restaurants as in addition to efficiating,
you're gonna get yelled at in both places. But I
think I enjoyed the officiating more even though that we
are going to get yelled at. You get an order
wrong at a particular restaurant of certain people and see
how they react to it. But I think what excites
me about officiating it and what I look at. There
are tough plays that everybody knows a tough play, and
(10:01):
when we hear something in the heat of the moment
on those plays, that's understandable and expected and that's where
you like learn to grow. But what is troubling in
the use set is when we have irrational behavior where
it continues well beyond the play, and that's the frustrating part.
And you know we mentioned that they're all humans. I
think we have to level set. The younger the kids are,
(10:22):
the less experienced officials are, and the more mistakes that
we're going to have as it grows and we get ready.
We talk about the varsity level. Everyone that's going on
the floor knows that expectations are for them to be
near perfect. Now we're never going to be near perfect,
but it's to try and be as best we can.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Hey, I've told this story one hundred times, but I
was seventeen, eighteen years old coaching at Catholic E Saint
Peter Paul Hirsh and I had a parent with a
big old camera of videotape come up to me after
and go it. Gave me a big VHS tape and
said I recorded this and handed me. I said, oh thanks.
She goes, please, don't be mad at me, and I
(10:58):
go manage you. She goes please and walked away. She
videotaped me as a crazy eighteen year old coach, and
it was an epiphany. I was like, I look like
an idiot. I sound like an idiot. I can't believe
like I often think for parents and coaches if we
would videotape them and have them watch it and have
(11:20):
them look to see how kind of like people around
them are embarrassed. It was unbelievable, Like I completely changed
because of that, and I think that if we did
more of that, I think it would help.
Speaker 5 (11:32):
I think go to the life lessons. I mean, you're eighteen,
a young coach. You're passionate about it. You want to
you want to get the kids involved. What are we
learning beyond Sports are gonna end for everyone one day
And that's why I love officiating because I can still
have that extension. But how do you improve from the future.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
Hey, have you have you done any late Geneva Badger games?
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Do I have to admit that now?
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Yeah, you do, because I want to know if you
had you know, did you throw hens La Roun or
any flash? If those boys are.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
I did have him earlier in the year for one
of his games.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Did I bet he wore shorts? Right? Because he didn't
always worse shorts.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
That night I was out at Badger. It was a
beautiful night.
Speaker 5 (12:11):
I think everybody was in shorts, but I know coach
Hensler is in shorts no matter what.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
We are grateful speaking of the weather. Unbelievable weather.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
Yeah, really good weather. And we are now joined by
the head football coach at Late Geneva Badger undefeated, man
won the conference, had a big win last night. Hey, coach,
how you doing good morning?
Speaker 4 (12:32):
Guys doing well?
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Yeah, I've got Justin Murrian. Justin Murrian in studio with
We were talking some official stuff and he did one
of your games. He said, you were fine. You didn't
yell at him too much?
Speaker 4 (12:45):
Well, and I didn't work very hard then.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
No, he didn't. I must have been a game. You
guys are rolling. Hey, coach, congratulations, what a what a
great season, what a good win last night. Look, I
can tell you that that the Union Grove is a
really good football team. And when they were in Studio
three a few weeks ago, they had this game circled
(13:08):
and you would you would say that that's a really
good team and really well coached team. But Man forty
five fourteen of last night at Union Grove kind of
took the air out of that crowd early.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
I think, yeah, it was well, first of all, you're right,
like they're they're a really good football program. They're well coached,
they a lot of weapons, a lot of studs. They're huge, physical,
So yeah, we have a lot of respect for those guys.
I think, you know, we kind of caught them a
little bit in the third quarter and and maybe the
(13:40):
score wasn't, you know, real true to how we match up,
but we kind of caught them there. But either way,
it was an unbelievable environment. It's absolutely packed. Their whole
town was there. Our our side traveled really well. It
was cool, it was good, it was really fun.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
You know, Matt, when when people asked me do you
miss coaching, there's a lot of things I do not miss,
but the coaching in big games, coaching and environments like
you did last night and then have your team come
out and play really well and put up a great number. Man,
there's nothing better than that.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Yeah, it's we We talked a lot about it all week,
just that like, don't be nervous, to be excited, and
that's like every single person you know in the state,
that's why, that's why they played, like you said it
to playing a big game and eight and over state
and oh and that's a huge deal. And and I
(14:36):
think our kids just absolutely embraced it, like yeah, we
want this position. We we we this is why we
do it.
Speaker 1 (14:43):
Hey, hey, coach with selections. Saraday coming up here in
about forty five minutes looking at rankings. The rankings I'm
looking at. Franklin's won your two, Muskegoes three, Arrowheads four,
Nina was five. They got beat want to keep dropped,
but they're there. They they'll be probably five. Do you
have any idea they're not going to be able to
(15:06):
have Franklin, Badger, Musquigo and Arrowhead all one seeds. Do
you have any idea how this thing's going to break out?
Speaker 4 (15:13):
Well, yeah, it's it's math. So we're we'll get a
two seed simply because you know, our our schedule is
that we're a Division two team enrollment wise, and that's
what our schedule is, so we we can't earn as
many points as those guys that are playing in a
Division one conference. So that's how it's designed, and that's
how they want it, and that's what's going to happen.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
Hey, did do they always keep you normally in kind
of the same area so they don't send you guys
north and and do they either send you west or
they'll send you southeast.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
Right, Mike, you're gonna get me in trouble here, jump.
Speaker 5 (15:53):
In here, like it's gonna change a little bit with
the new formula. I and uh, it's all I'm helping
doing the inverse.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
Yeah, So why am I getting you in trouble?
Speaker 4 (16:09):
My My faith in the w I A has been
shaken in recent years. So you know, my coll last
night was they could screw up a two piece puzzle,
So I wouldn't I wouldn't be surprised if we play
the Packers in the first round, or maybe a Canadian team,
you know, that would probably be about right. I will
(16:31):
probably play in a We'll probably play in a parking
lot with broken glass and you know.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
And and yeah, play play the Packers or they maybe
Mahomes coach or the Chiefs. All right, justin now you
can help him go ahead.
Speaker 5 (16:47):
Yeah, So it's gonna be interesting. We're gonna see different matchups,
I think, than we've never seen before because they're they're
taking all the seeds and putting them in a group
and then trying to decide to travel within those groupings.
So the ones will play the eight and the twos
will play the sevens, and within those like two versus
sevens as Badger apparently as projected, they're only like point
thirty nine away from the one seed. They're going to
(17:10):
be in that seed. Of like what travel in the
sevens makes the most sense to play Badger. So we're
gonna see matchups that we've never seen in the playoffs,
and that's going to make it a really intriguing postseason
this year.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Well, we'll see, we'll see. I am telling you. I
talked to more coaches just said, look, I understand everything's changed,
but it's still going to be a conference tournament. I
still see it being a conference tournament. And coach, do
you believe that you think it'll continue to be a
lot of conference tournaments?
Speaker 4 (17:39):
I think by geography, yeah, you're bound to have some
conferences conference teams in your bracket, But I don't I
think it will be better. I really do think the
travel and the matchups will be different. I think there
will be some change. So I think there's there's good
and bad and everything, you know, And I think that's
(18:00):
some of the good is I think they're going to
take care to try to promote what they project as
one in two seeds meeting up and and part of
that is the seeding process. But part of it is
a geography process. So we'll see you don't know what
you don't know till you know, you know, and well
we'll know more at ten o'clock.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
Are you are you guys watching it together as a
group or are you the coaching staff? What's the plan
for for the Badgers today?
Speaker 4 (18:25):
Yeah, that's why I was a little late getting on today.
We had a we had a breakfast burrito emergency here,
so I had to put that fire out. And then yeah,
our kids are Our kids are watching eating donuts and
britles and watching the game from last night. And then
we'll all go into the auditorium attend to hoot the
dollar and yell at the TV.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
That's stuff.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
It's become a really great environment in a good tradition.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
That stuff doesn't get old, does it.
Speaker 4 (18:50):
No, not at all. It's it's that's uh, today's one
of my favorite days. It's just kids are excited. There's
a lot of energy, and you're you're not really worried
about anything other than hanging out today. And that'll change
it like tenno two Yeah, oh for.
Speaker 1 (19:05):
The staff, Yeah, for you two, you're gonna enjoy the
burrito At ten o'clock, and at ten o five you're
gonna be like everybody out of here. I gotta go
watch film on this team. Hey, hey, coach, how with
the success you've had in the past, is that why
this team continues in, this program continues to roll. Is
(19:28):
it the youth program really doing a good job of
feeding good, good football players into the program? What has
been kind of the magic pill here the last few years.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
Well, it's like like just about any team that's had
a decent run, We'll tell you it's not one thing.
It's you know, this is probably first and foremost, we're
getting to run of talent. Now the kids that are
really really good at football are youth programmed an unbelievable
job preparing those guys and not just for what we
do with just building excitement and making football in town.
(20:01):
And so that's a huge deal. Our coaching staff, for
the most part, has been together, you know, some of
us two decades now, most of us over a decade,
and Dash helps, you know, from day one you can
kind of hit the ground running. So it's it's a
lot of different things, but we're uh, I don't want
to overanalyze the just kind of want to enjoy it.
(20:21):
You know what I mean forever.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
No, it doesn't looking at at this year, coach, I
can tell you this. Offensively, you know, the the lowest
amount of points you guys scored is against Elcorn. At
El Corn thirty three. You beat him thirty three to six. Offensively,
these guys are hitting on all cylinders. And before we
let you go with your offense, it starts with this quarterback.
(20:46):
But it certainly doesn't end with him. You know, this
line's got to be hitting on all cylinders. Your backs
have got to be, you know, doing what they have
to do. But it does start with that quarterback. And
he's having a heck of a year. Coach.
Speaker 4 (20:58):
Yeah, he's a good one, and he makes plays and
he does some things when there's not much there. But
you're right, it starts up front. Our old line is
doing a really terrific job. They're the kids, they've been
at it for a long time. They've they've been together
for a long time. A couple three year starters on
on up front there. And uh, you know, like I said,
our our coaching staff has been around long enough that
(21:21):
we get a different defense every week, and it takes
us a little bit, but we eventually figure it out.
And then when you have good athletes to kind of
find a way, it becomes pretty fun.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
Hey, it doesn't surprise me that you know that quarterbacks
last yame is oh Grady because you know, a tough
Irish kid, you know those are those are my favorite.
And the fact that he's smart enough to run your offense. Coach,
he's not like a lot of US Irish guys. I
can be honest with you. Normally we're up front. You
know that, you know, just one of those big linemen
(21:53):
hitting people. So I I congratulate Matt O'Grady. Hey, coach,
thanks for a couple of minutes. Enjoy that day, enjoy
the burrito today and look at even at ten oh five,
ten ten. Enjoy this season because very seldom, jud can
you get through that conference yours, you know, without a loss,
and winning the conference outright is a big deal every
(22:16):
year that's the goal, and you guys have done that.
So congratulations with that.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
Thanks Mike. I appreciate it's been a great year, been
a great run. Keep doing what you're doing.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
You got it for people, man, I appreciate that. Coach.
You know, this time of year, I send you a
text just about every Friday. If everything goes well, can
we get a couple of minutes with you? Have fun
today and certainly good luck next Friday.
Speaker 4 (22:37):
Coach, all right, thanks buddy.
Speaker 1 (22:40):
There you bet that's Matt Hensler, the head football coach
for Late Geneva Badger. We're going to get to a break.
Other side of the break, Justin Mirrion. He's he's a
football basketball official and they have something going on starting
October twenty seventh at Wisconsin Lutheran College. Were going to
talk to you about if you're thinking about becoming a
basketball official, you can start right here. The wb OAY,
(23:04):
the Wisconsin Basketball Official Association has a great way for
you to become an official, and we're going to talk
a little bit more about that with Justin on the
other side of the break. This is the Creative Construction
Wisconsin Home Improvement Show on Fox Sports nine twenty in
your iHeartRadio app. Welcome back to the Varsity Blitz high
school sports show. It's not the home improvement show. My producer,
(23:26):
Spencer's throwing his hands up. Spencer, I'm tired. I'm old.
I'm old. Could didn't sleep all that great last night,
So I'm calling the Sports Show, the Creative Construction of Wisconsin.
It's okay, It's the Varsity Varsity Blitz high School Sports
Show presented by your local Pick and Save and Metro
Market stores at nine point forty down with Chill is
(23:46):
going to join us in studio ten o'clock. Ryan lukezy
decoordinator at Muskego, will come and we're gonna talk a
little bit about the bracket show, talk a little bit
about Muskigo football and man, they're rolling again and again
in studio three right now, justin Marrion, he is in.
We talked the other day on the sidelines and I said, hey,
(24:07):
what's going on you know anything you guys are doing
with with basketball officials because I know every year we're
trying to figure out how to get more people involved
in it. And he goes absolutely, And I said, come
in studio and talk about it. Hey, you've got four
dates upcoming. The first is October twenty seventh, five forty
five to seven forty five at Wisconsin Lutheran College. People
(24:28):
want to come and learn more about what it takes
to become an official. Can you talk about what that's
going to look like?
Speaker 5 (24:35):
Yeah, I mean there's a need for officials that I
mentioned that in an earlier segment. But certainly you know,
if you are a young student, if you are a
parent whose kids are no longer playing and you're used
to being at games, there's an opportunity to continue to
serve and to really be a part of such a
wonderful advocation. And as you mentioned, you can make a
(24:55):
little money. You can make thirty five forty dollars an
hour on some of the youth games and real have
that experience. So five point forty five at Wisconsin luther
In College for inviting anyone that is interested in learning more.
We're going to put on a two hour mini clinic
and kind of give you the basics of what it takes.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
That's awesome. Age wise, twelve thirteen, what's the age that
kids if they.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
Want to get involved. That's a great question. I need
to get clarity on. I think it's a closer to fourteen.
But okay, I'll tell you what. I'll find the answer,
Mike and get it to you. How young you can be.
Speaker 1 (25:26):
Yeah, let me know, because I got grandkids that are
looking for Okay, you know, I can I get a
job at fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, you know, can I make
some money? Is there any place I can do things
just on the weekend? Yeah, there is, And this would
be a perfect place to find out more about that.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (25:46):
You know, I don't know the basketball answer because I
started when I was nineteen twenty, but I know the
soccer answer is twelve because that's when I started. So
there's certainly opportunities. I just don't know the basketball.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
And well, I find it hysterical too that you'd play
in a game and then go to the next field
and be the official and maybe be the official get
on teams that you just played or something, And I
think that that's very funny. Hey, for you, what's more
difficult being a Is it being a basketball official or
being a football official?
Speaker 3 (26:13):
That's a great question.
Speaker 5 (26:15):
I think basketball has some very difficult aspects to it,
and I think the plays are tougher to call, But
football and the rules are really really tough to learn.
For eighty ninety percent of the game, like it's normally
right a hold, but you get some complicated things. The
rules are not easy to learn in football, so that
makes it really challenging starting out. But you know, you
(26:37):
can get some people that know the game We're fortunate
we have a long time back judge Bill top who
used to be a referee that's coming back after thirteen years.
We kind of looked to him as he's also has
basketball experience. We kind of looked to him as as
our veteran along with Jason Dahl and sure and really like,
you know, lean on those experiences that that he's had
and you know, we try and get better Andy, Jeff
(26:57):
and I as well.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
Man. That's awesome when when somebody comes to this and
there's four days you can go to with a WISBOA right,
wisboa dot net and it's the Wisconsin Basketball Officials Association,
so Wi sboa dot net to get more information about
(27:18):
these clinics. And again the first one is October twenty
seventh at Wisconsin Lutheran College. But then you've got four
more November sixteenth over at Franklin High School, Saint Matthew's
and o'connawak in December fourteenth and Hartford High School and
the twenty first. So if you go to one of
the especially the one on the twenty seventh, and this
(27:38):
is something you want to get involved in, bring some
more people for the sixteenth and I think that's the
way we can get people to do this. The people
that get involved in it decide this is something they
want to do. They like it. They're learning a lot,
especially at that clinic at Wisconsin Lutheran College.
Speaker 5 (27:53):
And bring somebodies, Mike, it's funny you say that. You
talk to any coach and they'll have a coaching tree.
Who's somebody that you coach, Mike coaching as officials, we
need to do a better job of this. We need
to develop our officiating tree. And who's somebody that we
brought along into officiating. As we all bring one person,
it would make a huge impact. And football, Like you
look at the average age of the football official in Wisconsin,
(28:16):
it's up there. And there's a need. There's a need
in every sport. So if you have a passion and interest,
you can certainly find our contact info on wisbo a
dot net and we can connect to you. If you're
sitting here thinking, hey, I'd really love to do lacrosse,
there's a need. If there's an interest, let's get you connected.
Even if it's beyond basketball.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
Yeah, and we're let's do basketball because of this thing.
You guys are doing what I've told my grandkids is
and you had said this in the last segment, pretty
flexible as far as your schedule, and they can do
games in the evening, they can do games, and we
can they can work pretty much as almost as much
as they want, as long as they keep their homework up.
(28:55):
And I'll pay attention to that. But I mean, they
can go out there and they can be in the
gym all day long on the weekends with all these
tournaments going on. And it's not just during basketball season.
In the offseason, did you do you do a lot
of games in the summertime basketball games.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
I'll do a little bit, and not as much as
I used to. But it's funny that you say offseason.
As an avid sports fan in.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
The area, what is an off season any sport anymore?
Speaker 1 (29:22):
Please tell me. I don't know, because that has a
lot to do with participation with some of this stuff. Now,
with all these select and all these travel teams and
girls volleyball taken, they're they're taking a lot of good
athletes off the basketball court. I can tell you that
as young officials. When when if somebody comes to this
October twenty seventh clinic again five forty five to seven
(29:44):
forty five at Wisconsin Luthoran no cost to command. You
don't have to register, just show up, Just show up
in the gym over at Wisconsin Lutheran College. What are
some of the lessons that you're going to be talking.
It's not just being on the court and and and
being able to sell and positioning. It's that thick skin
thing too, right.
Speaker 5 (30:03):
Yeah, it's the ability to have a little bit of
confidence and to develop that it's something that you're not
comfortable in or maybe that you have a lot of
passion in basketball. It's always interesting to see people come
in that I know the rules of basketball, and then
you start talking a little bit at the surface level
and it's like, okay, how well do you really know
the rules?
Speaker 2 (30:22):
And we don't even have to say it.
Speaker 5 (30:24):
But the enlightenment that the people get that are interested of,
oh wait, I didn't really know the rules of basketball
is interesting. And you know that ability the thing that
I love about officiating. I remember going back to my
wife and I started dating. I said, I hope you
like people. I have friends that are right out of
high school and as much as seventy or eighty years old.
Because of that, brother and sisterhood of officiating of any
(30:46):
different walk of life, men, women that you come across.
It's wonderful to be a part of a group and
really connect beyond basketball and talk life and different You know,
there's plumbers in the group and you know we had
to raf over to fix toilet because my wife will
tell you that ain't Justin's a checkbook guy.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
He's not a hammer guy. And I host a home
improvement show. Don't call me, I'll tell you who to call.
There's no doubt about that. Hey, as an official for
coaches that are listening, and every official is different. You
guys are all different on how to approach us right,
how to approach in official. If somebody disagrees with a
(31:28):
call for you as an official, the best way for
a coach to have that conversation with you is.
Speaker 5 (31:34):
What Well, the other thing, Mike is none of the
coaches are the same either, your not their name as
even all those guys that you're on staff with over
the time. But you know, ask questions and you know
the angles and perspectives are different, and it's okay.
Speaker 2 (31:48):
As officials.
Speaker 5 (31:49):
There may be a time you ask a question that
I might tell you Mike and I'm probably not going
to do it often, but it's going to happen where
I just say, Mike, you're right, I was wrong on
the play.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
And you know what for coaches when that happens, or
if they go, look, you might be I may have
missed that. I'll you know. But this is what I
saw for me as a coach, when a guy was
in the right position, blew the whistle and sold his call,
didn't hesitate for a couple of seconds and then go
block because that drove me crazy. That would put me
(32:17):
through I'm telling you, I would go nuts. But if
they sold it and they're in the right position, I
got nothing. You were in the right position, sold the call,
You probably saw the travel. Maybe I missed it. But
the other part is if not in the right position
and don't sell the call, then I have a question.
And there are some officials you can have that conversation with.
There are others that go, we're not talking about that now,
(32:39):
we're done. Stop it. And so as coaches we have
to understand who and the more you do it, and look,
I did it for so long, I knew all you guys,
so I kind of knew who I could have a
conversation with and who I probably once the ball was
thrown up, shouldn't even look at, shouldn't look at And
I knew going in exactly what that was about. When
(33:00):
you guys do this? Are you guys? And again it's
it's October twenty seventh. If you're thinking about you want
more information on how to become a basketball official. The
WBA is putting on these four clinics and I really
like this. No cost, You don't need to register, Just
show up and be ready to get on the floor, right,
bring your tennis shoes and bring your sweats and five
(33:22):
forty five to seven forty five at Wisconsin Lutheran College.
How much of this is going to be with guys
sitting in the stands and how much will this clinic be.
Let's get out on the floor and teach some of
this stuff.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
Zero sitting.
Speaker 5 (33:36):
We do the classroom set and we'll have that for opportunities.
Our association also does a podcast. We had an official,
Travis Paron from northwest part of the state, and one
of the things that we're learning from him across the
state is we need to get people up and moving.
So this clinic is going to be two hours on court.
We have a team of four Crystalis Nicholas's Rowayne Shev
(33:57):
and Tom Sowinski across the area that are and you
know they've been there, they've done it. They different people,
different experiences, background, the uh to really walk you through
on the floor, the things that you're gonna do. And
one of the one of the big things, believe it
or not, Mike, is we gotta teach you how to
blow a whistle, because that's the number one believability thing
when you come at that place of like, how.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Are you blowing your whistle?
Speaker 5 (34:17):
If it if it comes off pretty weak and you
can barely hear it, everyone in the gym knows like
where it's at.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
So if we can get you to blow your whistle right,
you're gonna be ahead of a lot of things.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
A lot of authority. Hey what do you do? And
I know you were up in Findalac you're at West
Allist Central for a bit. Where are you at now?
Speaker 5 (34:34):
Yeah, I'm at Germantown, really enjoying the opportunity to lead
communications and marketing and support all the great things happening
in Germantown.
Speaker 2 (34:41):
It's been a wonderful opportunity.
Speaker 5 (34:42):
I think, uh, doctor Reuter for bringing me in, and
you know he's a big sports fan. I'm be sure
he's listening. And we're happy that the Warhawks got to
win last night.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
And Jake Davis, big fan. A little bit easier ride
for you, it is.
Speaker 5 (34:56):
I miss all the great people up in Fond Delac
and Kevin Flagner is up there on the team and
it's still leading. They had a nice when last night
as well into the playoffs. But you know, it's a
it's a great group. Matt Stunbertha new superintendent is doing
a wonderful job up there.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
Things are exciting.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
When we talked about you said, look, I love it.
The drive's tough. It's tough every day to do that.
So I'm glad you're back close to home. And Germantown
got a good one, so I know. Coach Sid thinks though.
By the way, yeah, coach sit over at Saint Francis,
big fan of yours. It's good to see you. I
appreciate this. Anything I can do to help promote what
you guys are doing, please let me know. Go to
(35:34):
Wisboa with boa dot net to get more information on
these clinics. That the Wisconsin Basketball Officials Association are putting on.
And I can tell you that look to go. If
you have any interest, your kids have interest, your grandkids
have interest, go over to this and you'll get a
really good idea if this is something you want to
(35:55):
continue to go and become an official on the basketball floor.
And there's a lot of flexibility to this thing. And
I can tell you that some of these guys, like
Justin when they started, didn't think, you know, twenty years later,
he's still be doing this and they're doing it. And
we need to get a little bit more young kids
to get involved in it. And I would highly recommend
(36:16):
you're going to learn a lot of the basics and
what it takes to be a good official again. October
twenty seventh at Wisconsin Lutheran College. Go to wisboa dot net. Hey,
it's good to see you.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
Good to see you.
Speaker 5 (36:28):
Thanks Mike for the support, and we're looking forward to
helping anyone that wants to become a basketball official get
into it. And there's no commitment, so come on out
to Wisconsin Losing College.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
He is justin Mary. No one's going to be yelling
at you that night.
Speaker 2 (36:39):
So they might end and that's probably read Fleeta. That's okay.
Speaker 1 (36:42):
Yeah, well I'll come over. I'll just heckle you guys
from the crowd where you get to a break other
side of the breakdown with Chillis is going to join
us in studio. He's the host of the Journey House
College Sports Show with ninety seven to three going to music.
We're going to talk to Don about what he's going
to be doing and how you can listen to his show,
and we'll do that on the other side of the break.
(37:03):
This is the Varsity Blitz High School Sports Show presented
by your local Pick and Save and Metro Market stores
only on Fox Sports nine twenty and your iHeart Radio App.
Speaker 4 (37:13):
I like that.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
I feel back at home with that.
Speaker 1 (37:17):
It's Spencer's pretty good. He's a pretty good producer. Welcome
back to the Varsity Blitz High School Sports Show, presented
by your local Pick and Save and Metro Market stores
only on Fox Sports nine twenty your iHeart Radio App.
You got any problems with your HVAC system?
Speaker 6 (37:32):
No, not at this point.
Speaker 4 (37:33):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (37:34):
I will And when you do, where do you go?
Diavon Jorganson Heating and Cooling. They find small issues before
they become major.
Speaker 6 (37:41):
Problems, and you take the maintenance plan. Tell me, I'm
tell me.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
That's why he's one of my favorite Right there, my
next guest before we get to Ryan Lukazy and he
is in the parking lot. I'm gonna have Spence go
go let him in the decoordinator. A musquigoes going to
join me for the second hour, but down with Shillis,
the host of the journey House College Sports Show is
in studio and with everything going on over at ninety
(38:09):
seven to three, I just wanted to have you in.
We've been friends for a long time, man, and what
I love about you and I is we might not
talk for a couple months, and about thirty seconds in
the conversation, we're busting each other on stuff, and you
know what that means, we're friends. Yes, that's the way
that works. Hey, I'm sorry that that the journey House
(38:32):
College Sports Show. They can't hear it on ninety seven
to three the game, But there is a way for people.
You guys are not going to stop doing the show.
Speaker 6 (38:39):
No, we're not going to stop doing the show. As
of right now, we've moved it to Spotify. So the
podcast is up and running. You can find it again
on Spotify. The Journey House College Sports Show powered by
Waterstone Bank, presented by Sore Ninjas is now on Spotify
and then from there, hopefully over the next week to
two weeks, we're going to make sure we get it
up on Apple and Google and anywhere people can find
(39:01):
their podcasts because we want to keep this thing rolling.
Speaker 1 (39:04):
So I was over at the Journey House there. I
gave them the AYFL Team of the Week in Charles
over there is just I love them, doctor boy. You
know what, I'm so sorry I met her. She was
there to take to meet me and greet me, and
I apologize, but she's been there a long time and
(39:25):
I am currently I've got a couple of clients that
I'm asking for them to spend some additional funding to
be able to promote the Journey House. I think the
world of Charles and the people over there are going
to have their youth football staff in studio here in
a couple of weeks, and I'm glad that you're continuing
to promote what they do in Waterstone Bank does a
great job.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 1 (39:45):
Yeah, I love the Journey House.
Speaker 6 (39:46):
That connection with Waterstone Bank has been pivotal in not
only our show, but also the contributions then that have
been made to Journey House. And I agree with you
wholeheartedly what Journey House does for the community. And again
they always talk about whether you're you're a child to adult.
The different programs that they provide to again benefit the community,
(40:10):
helping people, uh be better, you know what I mean.
So it's good stuff.
Speaker 1 (40:14):
Yeah. When I went over there, Charles Brown is when
I'm talking to it, he he he runs it there
and he well, he said, look, I I just I
just work here.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
And I go, no, you don't.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
The ex military guy here, I have to tell you this.
And I just giggled myself. We're over. We're over at
We're there the Journey House field, Mitchell Park. Yes, and
got done, and I talked to the team and talked
to the coaches for a while, hung out with Charles
and and I said, all right, I gotta get going.
He said, where you parked? I said, on the street there.
(40:45):
He said, let me walk through your car. I go, Charles,
I'm a big boy, one hundred percent irish. She said,
feel better Mike if I did. Let me just walk
you your car. We'll just keep talking. And I knew
what he was doing. Yes, you want to make sure.
I got in my car and got out. You know,
see just about any park in the area. You want
to make sure. And I thought, man Charles, and he's
(41:06):
fit as a phil X military. I felt pretty good
hit walking next to me. And you want to talk
about a servant leadership. Hart just a great guy. Hey, Don,
we got a chance to meet when you were doing
the scoreboard show for me on Friday nights over at
the other radio station that we're at, and you came
to me one day and said, hey, look, I want
(41:27):
to do my own show, and here's what I'm thinking.
And we were able to kind of work together and
have you start that show at the other station and
then to be able to come over here. I like
that show a lot, and I do, and I think
you guys, the way the show is evolved over the
years is the knowledge that you guys bring in the
guests that you have is incredible.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
You know.
Speaker 6 (41:48):
One of the things that I like to equate it
to is the way you have passion for high school sports.
That's the same way we go about it at the
college level. And we've been fortunate enough. You know, we
get to talk to a bunch of D three coaches
over the tenure of our show, and and they're as
good as they get. I mean, when you talk to
some of those D three coaches and you know, you
(42:09):
go to you go to commercial, you're ready to run
through the wall like you can. You can understand how
you get hyped up over that. And then you know
the affiliations we've had with like u w M and
helping promote the Panthers and in growing that program at
least within the city, because sometimes you WM gets lost
in the shuffle with Marquette Wisconsin, the Bucks on the
(42:30):
basketball side of things, Marquette Wisconsin.
Speaker 4 (42:35):
We'll go with that.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
Hey hey, hey, no, no, hey there rising up baby.
Speaker 6 (42:41):
They go ahead and rise up, pick up their phone
when we call, and then I'll talk about the Phoenix.
But that's a whole other segment I've had.
Speaker 1 (42:48):
Since in studio with me. You need some help with that.
Let me know. I make a couple of.
Speaker 6 (42:56):
Step step off the soap box, Big guys, step off
the soapbox.
Speaker 1 (43:01):
Hey, I still remember when I was coaching up in
Madison and you came in to host my show. For me,
and I was going to be the guest from ten
fifteen to ten thirty or something, and you would coach Cooks,
David Cooks. It was ten twenty five and you hadn't
gotten to me yet. You were talking about, you know,
your favorite kind of pie for them or something. And
(43:23):
I'm sitting there and we're I gotta get on the
bust and and go get to the Cold Center, and
I'm listening to the show on hold, and I'm thinking,
you got to be kidding me. It's my show, and
you guys are making me wait because you're like cherry
pie more than apple.
Speaker 7 (43:36):
You know.
Speaker 6 (43:36):
It's the equivalent of putting the hockey stick in the door.
Right now, Spence, send Mike out for a cup of coffee.
We'll throw the hockey stick in and take over as
we make our way towards the noon hour.
Speaker 1 (43:47):
Yeah, well you'll be talking Ousburg and Cold or basketball
which right there, and you'll be talking the Platfell Pioneers.
Speaker 6 (43:54):
Trust me, Hey, big game today, Big game, Top twenty
five matchup plat Villain.
Speaker 1 (43:59):
Look, I'm telling you, men, but.
Speaker 6 (44:03):
That again is the struggles continue in Madison, and Spence
and I were talking before you know we came on
the air about what our predictions are for this Wisconsin
Ohio state game. The D three stuff here in the
state is unbelievable, especially I'll just use the YAK The
YAC now has six teams in the top twenty nationally.
(44:25):
Any one of those teams could go to any other
conference and dominate, and the sad part will be they
end up beating each other up and there will be
the best of the best, like always that survive. But
of all of those teams right now that are ranked
in the top twenty, all of them could legitimately have
a rationale behind making the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (44:48):
Do you know what? And I've done this for years.
I will have college coaches Division IIE college coaches from
the state on my high school show a lot, but
I always go to their roster first, and I want
to make sure that they have a number of Wisconsin kids.
And I can tell you that anybody in the we ACT,
(45:10):
I barely have to go to their roster because they
recruit our states really, really well. And I'll tell you this,
Carthage is starting to do a much better job. Carol,
Wisconsin Lutheran Concordia, They all they all identified that the coaching,
the coaching at the high school level in the state
Wisconsin is as good as anywhere in the country. And
(45:31):
I don't I don't care what anybody says to Ohio, Texas,
I get it. Florida when they come out of this
area and they're finding kids that might not be the
best player on their team, but a kid who will
run through the wall for you and has a high ceiling,
and they're recruiting those kids, and I love that.
Speaker 3 (45:47):
Well.
Speaker 6 (45:48):
And take the states that you just mentioned, and now
let's move to D three. We compete with all of
those and quite frankly rank above the Floridas, who have
incredible high school athletes. But as far as D three
programs were better, as far as California goes, we're better.
The only one where I would question there's an equivalency
(46:10):
is Texas.
Speaker 4 (46:10):
Right.
Speaker 1 (46:11):
You know what's interesting is you don't remember your daughter's
name half the time, but look at you, at.
Speaker 2 (46:16):
This, look at you.
Speaker 1 (46:17):
I don't remember my nieces and nephew's names, but I
know Rod cru hit three eleven his last year with
Minnesota Twins. So I just trust me.
Speaker 6 (46:26):
Can you get me a transfer? The bus just ran
over me. It might take me a minute to get
back on the corner to move on.
Speaker 1 (46:32):
Isn't it fun? Isn't it fun getting back with me?
We could do a whole we could do this whole
podcast and I don't know the mcchillis world or something.
Speaker 6 (46:40):
Oh yeah, yeah, boy, that that will have. There will
be no copyrighting Frenchman there whatsoever.
Speaker 1 (46:47):
None. So you can go on Spotify and listen to
the journey House College Sports show. So people ask me
what I think is going to happen at Wisconsin, and
I don't know why, I'm never right on these, but
any chanced that that coach for Kansas comes.
Speaker 6 (47:02):
Home, I would love to see Lance Leopold come come back.
And I think what you're finding now, Mike, is after
the James Franklin firing last week, every agent of every
coach is now throwing their name out there for that
Penn State job. Why because now suddenly the universities that
they're at are having meetings like, you know, we don't
want to lose. I'll use mcgiffern as my example. I'm
(47:23):
not going to lose mcgiffern to Penn State. So let's renegotiate.
Let's let's see what's happening out there. Like Sagetti just
did at Indiana, He's turned Indiana around, and suddenly this
year or this week, I should say, you know, he
gets re upped for eleven point whatever million a season
now for the next eight years. I don't know if
(47:44):
Lance will find his way back, because I know Kansas
last year re upped him and gave him a contract extension.
I bet wouldn't that be awesome? Now real quick, because
I know you got to get to a break. This
is where I think Division one loses out when I
think of I'll just use Janice Jeff Janis of the world.
At lacrosse, we've got unbelievable coaches who I think could
(48:07):
make the next step just like Lance Leopold did and
have that same success. And unfortunately at the Division one level,
what do we do. We get on the carousel and
we just continue to retread, much like the NBA. And
I would love to see if it comes to this,
if the Badgers decide to move on that they look
a little bit broader than just what the current retreads
(48:30):
are out there.
Speaker 1 (48:30):
Yeah, I agree, that's good stuff, Thank you, boss. That's
good stuff. Other than the whole You know, we're rolling
over the bus on you know.
Speaker 6 (48:39):
You don't know well when you throw somebody under, and
she is, she's got the college and autum.
Speaker 1 (48:43):
You sure know all of about D three football and basketball.
But yeah, can you help her with her homework?
Speaker 4 (48:49):
No?
Speaker 1 (48:49):
No, you cannot know for your doctrine.
Speaker 4 (48:51):
Right.
Speaker 6 (48:51):
No, girl, girlfriend gets on the gets on FaceTime and
start showing me the math that she's doing. I'm like,
you gotta call mom. There's no this is done.
Speaker 1 (49:00):
He is down with Hill is the host of the
Journey House College Sports Show. Go to Spotify and and
if if a new home finds him or he finds
a new home, I will promote it. But right now,
go to Spotify, and that's gonna kind of unleash you
a little bit.
Speaker 6 (49:16):
We'll get to be a little freer, little freer going
to be. We're gonna try, We're gonna try to make
sure the band is back together. But we go seven second,
dumb button Spotify. We could hold pipe pop. We'll get
to a break.
Speaker 1 (49:28):
On other side of the break, the defensive corderator Muskego
will join us and the Bracket Show on My twenty
four turn on Channel twenty four. But turn the sound
down and we'll tell you what's going on. That's for sure.
This is the Varsity Plax High School Sports Show, presented
by your local Pick and Save and Metro Market stores,
only on Fox Sports nine twenty in your iHeartRadio app.
(49:49):
Welcome back to the Varsity Blitz. High School Sports show
is always presented by our friends at your local Pick
and Save and Metro Market stores. Coming live from the
Donovan and Jorgans and Heat and Colleens studios. Man, big
day for high school football. It's bracket revealed day and
on My twenty four if you on watching on TV,
we're going to be going to it every once in
(50:10):
a while and Spencer's going to kind of control that
when we go over to listen to what they're talking
about in studio with me for the hour. And I
appreciate him coming in. Defensive coordinator at Muskeigo High School,
Ryan Lukezy, nice win last night, coach.
Speaker 3 (50:24):
Thank you really appreciate it and I'm just happy to
be here.
Speaker 4 (50:27):
Man.
Speaker 1 (50:27):
I post hard for the guys at my twenty four
to do the Muskego at mcguanago game, and we had
a really good game. West Bend West is a good
football team and Homestead obviously is a really good, storied program.
And the crowd was great. We had a nice close
game and people were looking at that Muskigo Mguanago game
(50:48):
going we got a better game. My vote was better
and I go, I know, but the atmosphere there has
got to be unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (50:55):
It was pretty special.
Speaker 8 (50:55):
You know, anytime those two communities get together, you know
it's gonna be a fun night and it's gonna be
a heck of a four ball game, and at two
like minded communities, and it was awesome.
Speaker 3 (51:03):
It was special is their senior night.
Speaker 8 (51:05):
Conference championship was on the line for both schools, so
there was definitely a lot to play for, and it
was definitely it was definitely.
Speaker 3 (51:11):
An environment that you want to be a part of.
There's no doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (51:14):
You know, as coaches sometimes and people don't believe me,
but I sometimes losses early in the season and when
you look back in hindsight helped that Nina loss. I
would argue whether it was a loss or not. But
I watched that video a ton and look, you don't
need to say it. I'm gonna say I think you guys,
(51:34):
there's a little home cooking going on, little home cooking
going on. Not a bad loss. And before we do that,
hold on, Spencer, let's listen in real quick to the
bracket show.
Speaker 9 (51:46):
Almost sent to host Turtle Lake.
Speaker 10 (51:47):
Our seven seed Webster will hit the road to take
on the Bulldogs of Boyceville.
Speaker 7 (51:52):
Travis quick point on what you see here from this bracket.
Speaker 11 (51:56):
Well, Cockmfountain City has been very, very impressive.
Speaker 1 (52:00):
So that's what we're going to be able to do.
We probably won't spend much time in Division seven. We
get to Division five. I'm gonna need to pay a
little attention. Lake Country Lutheran the Mighty Lightning. Ran Son's
a freshman, got a good win last night against Martin Luther.
Going back to the start of this season for you
guys again the home cooking thing. Let me take the
hit on that. Anybody from Nina want to challenge me
(52:22):
that that's okay that loss. I was on the sidelines
then for oh Creek and I asked you, how is
the week of practice? And you got that look and
I've seen that look before with you, and you go, yeah,
it was good. Yeah, it's not bad. And I go really,
and you go, yeah, Our kids came ready to play,
not happy that we took a loss, and we're gonna
(52:43):
get it going.
Speaker 8 (52:44):
Yeah, use the nail on the head. I mean, in hindsight,
it might have been the best thing that could have
happened to us. And I think more than anything, it
was a great lesson learned. Is when you when you
travel on the road and you have to bring your
own energy, you have to bring your gas, and you
can never leave a game in any interpretation of officials
or anything else. And that's not to say that that's
what decided they Quite frankly, they beat us. They had
one more point in us and they beat us another
(53:04):
really good football team in a great staff. I think
they're one of the best coaching staffs in the state,
to be honest. So it was just great learning and
it's really how you respond and that's why you want
to play good teams early, because I think it shows
you what you have and you just continue to go
to work. And that's what our kids did and that's
what they've continued to do for the last eight weeks.
Speaker 1 (53:22):
Hey coach defensively at Muskigo. When you look at this year,
you know you gave up twenty one last night to
a really good mcguanaco team, beat them thirty eight to
twenty one. Gave up seventeen to Arrowhead, gave up seventeen
to Old Creek. I was at that game. It was
forty one seventeen. Gave up fourteen to Nina. Defensively, this team,
(53:46):
a lot of people talk about your offense, right, I'm
not sure enough people talk about the defense, and you're
the defensive coordinator, Mosqigo, and you're okay with that. You've
never been Look, you don't need to pound your chest.
You don't mind flying under the radar a little bit.
But boy, defensively, this team has come to play a
week in and week out.
Speaker 4 (54:05):
Man.
Speaker 8 (54:05):
Yeah, I mean we had a great group, and we
got a great group that performs the right way, and
they quite frankly, they prepare the right way.
Speaker 7 (54:11):
You know.
Speaker 3 (54:11):
We have an edge, you know, mentally and physically, and
they're always ready to go.
Speaker 8 (54:15):
I mean they believe in who we are and what
we are and then they just go out and execute it.
And we got a great staff. And I think the
other thing that's unnoticed and sometimes in our scores is
our special teams is the best it's been in my
twelve years of Muskigo ty Ku Nicks, our special Teams coordinator,
and our level of detail and what we do there
now and the way we weaponize our personnel is just
different than it's ever been and it's elevated our program
(54:36):
to another level.
Speaker 3 (54:37):
And that was amplified last night.
Speaker 8 (54:38):
We took a punt return back to the house with
Jackson Emick in the in the second quarter and great
blocking and it's just something that we worked on all week.
So to see it, to see it coming to fruition,
you know on Friday nights, is what's all about?
Speaker 1 (54:50):
Is that a progression for a program? And the reason
I ask you that I'm really happy you brought that
up last night. Homestead against West Bend West, Right, You've
got a program that the history is, we're gonna we're
going to challenge, We're probably gonna win the conference. We're
gonna go deep in the playoffs. West Ben West new
kid on the block last night, first possession West and
(55:12):
West gets to stop. Homestead is going to punt West
and West doesn't have either enough guys, you know, they
were they weren't sure guys running in and out. They
had to take a time out Homestead. It was fourth
and two from the fifty went for it and took
it to the house for a touchdown, and West Bend
West comes back, scores kicks off, they take the kickoff
(55:36):
to the house, and I thought, man, special teams. It's
special teams, and that's what cost them last night. And
I'm wondering, is that a progression as a program gets
better and better.
Speaker 8 (55:47):
Yeah, there's no doubt, you know, and the seven eight,
nine years ago, you know, we played a lot of
starters on special teams and I think we're really effective.
And you know, kickoff unit itself is you know, if
you're fortunate to have a kicker that can put the
thing in the end zone high school football, that's a weapon,
you know, because you guarantee just to put that thing
in a touchback and started a twenty yard line.
Speaker 1 (56:03):
But do you think they'll change that? Is everybody else
going to thirty and you know the twenty it just was.
You know, it's just a little bit different. They normally
follow and and but maybe.
Speaker 3 (56:14):
Not it does. We sure hope not.
Speaker 8 (56:15):
I mean, because the kickoff is still exciting in high
school football because it's it's probably not incredibly common that
you know, you have kickers that kick it that deep,
so that's a luxury when you have it, but you
just you have to be so sharp on every one
of those units. And it sounds like the situation you
alluded to last night is just sometimes those fourth and
short opportunities, you know, you have to see personnel coming
on and off, So it's really your your in game
(56:36):
operations and the way you see personnel mix and match
of do we get up punt return out there? Are
we just playing safe punt with our defense and certain
things like that are all just so important, especially in
those big games.
Speaker 1 (56:47):
You know what, and it was huge. It's three and
out the first right against Homestead. You're starting to chip
on your chest a little bit. Okay, we belong and
then they change and they run it and and and
the quarterback at Homestead man ran right up the seam
and ran a fifty yards for a touchdown. And you
could see the era come out west spend and then
(57:09):
right they come back and they they go right down
the field and then they kick off and give up
ninety yards for a touchdown, and you could just see
I felt like man special teams coach, they might be
you know, they're gonna have a little conversation with him
before the playoffs. I think we got to tighten this
thing up.
Speaker 8 (57:27):
Yeah, And I think one of the hardest things on
a coach is how you drill that. You know, It's
it's one of those things. You know, you can't really
do a live kickoff in practice, or at least I
don't know that you should. It's just it's just hard
to simulate that, you know, with player safety and managing
your bodies and all those things. So it's you know,
you got to be greatest coaches with how you put
your kids in positions to be successful there and how
you train and really you just got to have kids
(57:47):
that want to go out there, sell out and make
the plays on what's probably the most aggressive playing football.
Speaker 1 (57:52):
Yeah, one hundred percent. They just got done with with
Division seven. They'll come back with six when when we
get to five, just for Lake Country, Luther got to
find out where where they're at, and then we'll go
back in three to two and one a little bit. Hey, Ryan,
before we we're gonna get to an early break because
we're gonna want to do a lot of this bracket show.
(58:13):
I asked you this when you first walked in, Hunter Waller,
best player you've coached, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (58:19):
I think that's what I'll question. Special human.
Speaker 8 (58:22):
First of all, there's a faith based kid who who
does everything you know in the name of God and
and but instincts off the charts, loves football more than
more than most.
Speaker 3 (58:31):
And I think that's shown at every level.
Speaker 8 (58:33):
I mean, what he did as a high school athlete,
I think speaks for itself in those three years, and
he was a thirty eight no as a starter, never
lost a game. A lot of those weren't, you know,
all that competitive. We're being completely honest. And we had
great team around him too, and that obviously, his career
Madison speaks for itself. I mean, if there wasn't a
couple of injuries in his time at Madison, he would
have been on the field even sooner than he was
(58:54):
and I think made even more of a name for
himself even earlier.
Speaker 3 (58:57):
And he did the same thing in camp this year
with the cold.
Speaker 1 (59:00):
Well, the fact that they kept him on Look he's
hues out for the year and they didn't release him
tells you everything you need to know. And I think, look,
the matriarch of that family, his mom I'm a huge
fan of huge fan, and you know what she gets it,
she gets She loved going to Friday night games at
Musquigo to watch her boy play. She loved watching her
(59:23):
son play. She loved the program, loved the school. She
just was a big fan of everything going on there.
Shelley's the best. Other than the athletic director. She didn't
like him much. I'm just kidding. She loved McMillan.
Speaker 3 (59:36):
She's a fantastic leader.
Speaker 5 (59:37):
You know.
Speaker 8 (59:37):
She let our girdron club, it's our football booster club.
She kind of adopted that role early on, but did
a heck of a job there. But yeah, Shelley's amazing.
I think Shelley's a role model is apparent for me,
and so is Kyle. It was actually fortunate to see
both both Kyle and Shelley last night. So yeah, I
mean they're great. It's a great family, you know, and
that's I think the product great kids. And that's what
Hunter and that's what his sister Autumn is. It's a
(59:58):
great situation that Hunter has this servant leadership part right.
I asked him he was doing a fundraiser and raising
money for a nonprofit. I said, where's that come from
and he just pointed at her and he goes, I
learned it from her because that's how she raised us.
Speaker 1 (01:00:15):
And I just love that. Hey, last question about him
for you as a coach, what made him? When when
people ask me as a basketball coach, hier Blunt was
the best player I ever coached. He's now the top
assistant at Iowa State Basketball. And it was all of it.
It was spiritually, it was academically, it was physically, it
was mentally, it was all of it and the confidence
(01:00:38):
that he had and he put it all together. Was
he the best athlete ever coach? No, but he was
the best all around basketball player. And I'm wondering why
Hunter Wohler would would be the best football player you
coach and how he became that?
Speaker 8 (01:00:49):
Yeah, I mean football instincts. I mean he just gets football.
I think that's a huge part of it. And then
just competitive greatness, Like he's one of those guys when
he stepped in between the lines like a switch flipped
and he just knew it was time to go and
uh and loved it right true. And I think love
has become a pillar of our house and the Schigo
because of him, And like when you play with that
genuine love for the process, to game each other in
(01:01:10):
the community and all those different things, you know, you
give yourself a chance to play like that, So you know, instincts,
I Q all those things off the chart. He did
have athleticism and all that, there's no doubt with physical traits,
but just the switch flipped and that competitive greatness that
he has I think just speaks for himself and separated him.
Speaker 1 (01:01:24):
You know what, what what was impressive to me was
was the student athlete part of him. And you can't
be on discipline all day in the classroom and then
get to the football field and be disciplined. He was
disciplined all day long, and I love that. Hey, I'm
a big fan of yours, young man. And one of
the things that that I know that maybe not everybody knows,
(01:01:45):
is your the loyalty you have to the program of
the community you're at. Yeah, those the the hot name
assistant coaches. You're one of those and have been for years.
And you know, I know that that that one day
you're probably will be a head football coach where you want.
But there's been a lot of phone calls made and
(01:02:05):
you're like, now, I'm pretty happy when I'm at but
thanks for the offer. It's always nice to be asked.
But that loyalty that you have to the program, to
the school, to these kids, to the families is really
impressive to be. He is Ryan Lukeasey. He is the
defensive cord at Muschigo where you can get to a break.
The other side of the break, they're talking the Bracket
Show's Division six right now, will pop in when they
(01:02:26):
get to Division five. My grandson, I got to know
what's going on with the Mighty Lightning at Lake Country
Lutheran and then Division three, two and one Spencer will
pop us in and out. As teams from our area,
you start finding out where they're going, who they're playing against.
Let's get to a break. This is the Varsity Blitz
High School Sports Show, presented by your local Picket and
Save and Metro Market stores, only on Fox Sports nine
(01:02:48):
twenty in your iHeartRadio app. Welcome back to the Varsity
Blitz High School Sports Show, presented by your local Pick
and Save and Metro Market stores. I'm Mike McGivern alongside
Ryan Lucazy, defensive course at Muskego. The Bracket Show is
going on there talking Division five. Let's get to it
for a little bit, like gotten.
Speaker 11 (01:03:07):
Over to the Hump to get to a state final
for a few years, but you know, this could be
the year. They're a dominating offense with that ground game
that they have. And you know, Saint Croix falls there
as a three seed of potential rematch with Northwestern and
they've met a couple of times recently as well, regular
season and postseason.
Speaker 7 (01:03:25):
Well, Grand Sprig was the top overall seed for this bracket,
and I think we just have to go back again
to these tier one wins and tier two wins, you know,
beating your opponents and then the people you beat continue
to win. That helps your playoff qualifying score. And that's
the difference between the ones and the twos.
Speaker 11 (01:03:41):
Here.
Speaker 7 (01:03:41):
Let's go to section number two and it's Tomahawk at
the top line the Hatchets getting the number one seed.
Speaker 2 (01:03:47):
Am ro Hey.
Speaker 1 (01:03:48):
Lets once we get to Lake cunt er Luthored, we'll
go to that. Do you still enjoy this? Do you
get Are you nervous at all? Or you just trying
to figure out who you're gonna get?
Speaker 4 (01:03:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (01:03:58):
Yeah, it's just exciting. I think that's all it really is,
and you're just you're thankful to be a part of it,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (01:04:02):
Did you ever go to one of the CD meetings?
Speaker 4 (01:04:04):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (01:04:04):
Yeah, yeah, I've been a part of them in football, baseball,
and basketball.
Speaker 1 (01:04:07):
Do you miss him?
Speaker 2 (01:04:08):
Not one bit?
Speaker 1 (01:04:09):
I miss him. I love. I love when guys starts
spatting at each other and I get a chance to
get up and try to move up one. I don't
think I ever got up and tried to move down one,
like like a competitor who tried to get play against usquigo.
Speaker 8 (01:04:24):
But I can tell you this, I liked going those things. Yeah,
I mean, I think you have to go and you
have to enjoy to go fight for your program and
your kids. I mean, there's no doubt about that. It's
just there's I've been in some situations, man, and you're like,
oh boy, I don't know that you guys quite get
the situation here of just just all of it entirely.
Speaker 3 (01:04:42):
So we'll probably just leave it at that. But yeah,
it's it's an interesting situation, that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:04:45):
Do you know, last year, including me, you guys had
you had a lot of injuries, a lot of doubters.
I thought okay down here for them and and I
every level one, level two, level three, and I thought, man,
they're they're getting healthy again. Be careful and this year
you're not seeking up on anybody, coach.
Speaker 3 (01:05:05):
Yeah, I mean, and I think that's how it's going
to be.
Speaker 8 (01:05:07):
I mean, we sustained success here quite a few, you know,
over the last ten years plus, so I think people know,
you know, and we're going to be ready.
Speaker 1 (01:05:14):
There's no doubt a Spencer's the next section is going
to be like Hunchrie Luther. Let's listen to Stratford playing.
Speaker 9 (01:05:21):
At the right time.
Speaker 11 (01:05:22):
Yeah, two outstanding teams. Obviously, they've been in Camp Randall
a number of times over the last few years, speaking
of media, in Camp Randall, Amherst and Lancaster at level
one game they've met twice in a state championship game
in the last twelve to fifteen years or so. So
that's an interesting Level one matchup in Mayville at that
top seed. A really impressive running game for the Cardinals.
(01:05:42):
Scott Hilbert, their head coach, has done a great job
there running the wing tea and they're looking like one
of the favorites certainly coming out of that Flyway Conference.
Speaker 7 (01:05:51):
All right, a couple more matchups to reveal here. Closing
out D five, it's the lightning of Lake Country Lutheran
as the number one seed taking on Kiel in level one. Wittenberg,
burnham Wood and Brookfield Academy is the four to five.
New Glarus Clinton the three six, and Milwaukee Academy of
Science taken on Rascine Lutheran in the two versus seven.
Speaker 2 (01:06:13):
What stands out here, Travis.
Speaker 11 (01:06:15):
Well, Lake Country Lutheran plays good competition and they're the
top seed. New Glarus is a kind of a new
new kid on the block, if you will, really stepped
up and took a big step forward in the Southwest
Wisconsin Conference. Rascine Lutheran, you know, a really young team
still they were oppressive last year, but a good bracket.
Speaker 2 (01:06:35):
One of those brackets that again.
Speaker 11 (01:06:37):
Had some interesting travel right Wittenberg, Burnhamwood in kind of
the north Woods area, Lake Country Lutheran and Racine Lutheran
down in southeast Wisconsin. You got New Glarus down in
kind of southwest south central Keel.
Speaker 3 (01:06:49):
So again just how regional.
Speaker 1 (01:06:51):
Mighty lightning Lake Country luther gets the one seed. As
I looked at this coach, I thought Mayville relatively close,
would would they would be in that bracket, they might
get the two. I like that bracket for them.
Speaker 3 (01:07:04):
Yeah, I mean, congrats to them, congrats to you.
Speaker 8 (01:07:05):
And there's a family connection there, so that that's anytime
you earn that, I mean, that's clearly a product of
what you did all year.
Speaker 3 (01:07:10):
So that hats off to like.
Speaker 1 (01:07:12):
Only to received Saint Catharinees and I happen to be
at that one. So Coach bras Gal doesn't want me
to come to any more games, and he blames me
for that, by the way, But having a grandson who's
a freshman that's gotten some time on varsity, this means
the world to them, right the fact that, okay and
the things that start, it's already started to slow down
(01:07:33):
for him a little bit. They've moved him around different positions, line,
full back, tight end, little defensive end, defensive tackle, and uh,
come playoff time, things will change a little bit and
he'll get a feel for what that looks like.
Speaker 3 (01:07:45):
Yeah, playoff football is special.
Speaker 8 (01:07:47):
And I just hope, I hope for your grandson, and really,
any you know, any young person listening is just this
goes fast, you know, that this is gonna like a
blinking eye, it's going to be over. And and they
don't believe us, no, not one bit. And I just
and you do once you're a senior, and because it's
all those lasts, right, and especially when you get to
be a senior at this time, right, because you're guaranteed
this week, right, and you're just trying to earn another
(01:08:09):
week every week here on out. So I just hope
every kid takes that and and that kind of motivates
everybody that's learning an their future here and they go
play accordingly.
Speaker 1 (01:08:18):
Hey give me your background. Where'd you go to high school?
What sports did you play? How'd you get to Mesquigo?
Speaker 8 (01:08:23):
Yeah, West South Central Graduate, That's where I played. That's
where I played for coach Cralsey for my first two years.
Played football, baseball, basketball, really just focused football, baseball towards it.
Towards the end of it, whended up going to u
w lacrosse briefly played player for a little bit, got
into coaching about nineteen. Rick Hopper, who was the head
coach at Greendale Martin Luther I was helping out at
West South Central a little bit in the summers and
(01:08:43):
He's like, You're gonna be my JV baseball coach this summer.
I was like, I am huh, and realized, oh, that
can actually work, and so started coaching baseball.
Speaker 3 (01:08:51):
You know, nineteen twenty I coached.
Speaker 8 (01:08:53):
I coached every level there for about six seven years,
continue that under Dean Malachnik. So I just continue to
do that really at my alma mode. And when it
came time to graduating, had I knew it I could
student teach back in Milwaukee. I didn't want to stay
in Lacrosse one more semester and all right, I was like,
I'm gonna go home. There's an urban education program that
I can student teach with, and I'm going to try
(01:09:13):
to coach in the area.
Speaker 3 (01:09:14):
And you know, I picked up the phone.
Speaker 8 (01:09:16):
I called coach Crowsey and after hey, how you doing,
it was well you want to coach this fall? And
it's like, well that's why I'm calling, yeah, and really
does that twenty fourteen football season was my first one
at Muschigo that led into a student teaching opportunity or
a long term sub opportunity in January of twenty fifteen,
and I've been a part of Myschigo ever since.
Speaker 1 (01:09:35):
Hey, you met your coach Hoppard? Is there a better man.
I'm a big fan of his. He won't come in
the show because he won't come out of the show
much because he's he's not one upon his chest. He's
not someone who talks a lot. And I go coach,
but I'll do most of the talk and come on, pal.
I'm a big fan of his, and I think he
(01:09:55):
does things the right way. And he's got that servant
leadership part to serve kids and and and try to
get them to be better human beings, better fathers, better husbands.
And then you know, all through football.
Speaker 8 (01:10:07):
I love coach Hoppert actually Greenel Martin Luther has a
ton of coaches on that staff that coached me and
guys that I coached, you know, and actually coached with
a little bit. And uh, you know Brady Grace, Ava,
you know, coaches, coaches, family, they're all growing up now
and and just I'm kind of dating myself, which is
getting scary. But everything you just said I couldn't agree
with more. And he's he's an incredible human and and
I I loved playing for him. He was one of
(01:10:28):
my favorite coaches to play for. And I know I
love getting a chance to coach alongside him, and I
think I owe a lot of my early learnings as
a coach and just I think an advocate for people,
you know, to to coach Hoppert.
Speaker 1 (01:10:39):
What positions did you play?
Speaker 8 (01:10:41):
I played all over the place, you know, safety, safety
is my favorite. I played our monster position, uh in
the five to two under coach of Lucknick, who's over
at Oak Creek. Now, uh so those are my favorites.
And then I, like you, like your son, I play
a little running back. Uh, I apologize like your grandson.
Speaker 2 (01:10:55):
Thank you, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:10:57):
And it ended up being a little bit more of
a toolbox.
Speaker 4 (01:10:59):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:10:59):
I definitely not the greatest athlete in the world, but
I knew it's right. I knew all the things and
and uh I could could get people lined up and
and and could be diverse that way and try to
help the team.
Speaker 1 (01:11:08):
Very very seldom at a program like Mesquigo, in a
school like Mosquite does a freshman get any playing time
on the varsity level. But but at a school like
like Country Lutheran, because the numbers, you know, you've got
to figure that out over the years. Every once in
a while you get a freshman, How at what point
did things do Do things start to slow down a
(01:11:30):
little bit for them?
Speaker 8 (01:11:30):
Do you think I think it has to take a
couple of games. I mean, there's there's probably special kids
around you know that that that it clicks right away,
But I think you have to get under those lights
and you got to play on Friday nights.
Speaker 3 (01:11:41):
And you learn what varsity football is.
Speaker 8 (01:11:42):
And we talk a lot about Friday night reps because
it's it's just hard to seem like no matter how
hard you practice with good on good, even the scrimmage,
like just the speed of it all and just being
under the lights, like there's there's a significance to it.
And I definitely think it takes a game, you know,
or at least at least a quarter within that game
for you to kind of get through a drive, settle in, breathe,
(01:12:02):
and then be able to kind of roll and cut
it loose.
Speaker 1 (01:12:04):
Hey, when when when you were playing at West South
Center did you get reps on as a freshman?
Speaker 2 (01:12:10):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:12:10):
No, sophomore year. Sophomore. I was fortunate to play quite
a bit in certain moments, but yeah, that was the earliest.
Speaker 1 (01:12:16):
Do you know it's interesting with his grandson. He's six one,
about two hundred pounds, and he's pretty athletic, and so
they've moved him and and I and and I think
what they're doing. And I had the conversations to my
son in law. They're getting ready for the playoffs, and
we're gonna put him at full back case we need
him there. We're gonna put him that tight end. We'll
put him here, We'll put him there, and and and
(01:12:37):
that way. He kind of knows these positions. I asked
him about playing fullback, and I said, what was that like?
He said, I missed a bunch of blocks and that go,
he said, But I've never played it before, including on
the playground, he said. But the cool part is I
got a running start to hit people. And he's used
to playing offensive line, so for him to be able
to get it running start to try to try to
get to that linebacker, he said. He said, Papa, that
(01:12:58):
was pretty fun for me. And it's interesting how things
have slowed down a little bit for him. When you
talked about Look, playing in the playoffs is different. It
is you're playing against teams that are normally really good,
especially when you get to level three, four five. Things
things change, and the speed and the size and what
is at stake matters. And you can feel that in
(01:13:21):
the locker room and you can tell these kids who
have never been part of it all day long what
it's like, and they don't. They look at you and
they roll their eyes a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:13:30):
They do.
Speaker 8 (01:13:31):
There's no doubt, especially when if you're in a program
that has sustained success. And we started the conversation last night.
We'll talk about it Monday. And you know, you asked
about my experience.
Speaker 3 (01:13:38):
I never played. I never played in the playoffs as.
Speaker 8 (01:13:41):
An athlete and real so our reality is in football,
you have to qualify, right, And that's the only sport
in Wisconsin that it's like that. So the reality is
the first thing we're going to talk about is is
gratitude and how grateful we are to be here. There's
about three thousand kids state wide that are turning their
stuff in, you know, on Monday.
Speaker 4 (01:13:56):
Right.
Speaker 8 (01:13:57):
So the reality is we get a week of practice
and we have forty eight minutes now Friday, and what's
we're gonna motivate us every week from here on out
is just earning that next week, right, And we just
want to stay together as long as we can here,
you know, hopefully for the next five.
Speaker 1 (01:14:09):
He is Ryan Lukazy not bad for a ellas central
grand man. He can carry a conversation only kid man.
It's a great school, Mighty Bulldogs. He is in here
where we're gonna get to an early break because they're
gonna get to Division three coming up soon in the
bracket show, and we'll continue to talk about it. I
want to say congratulations the coach Braskell and the lightning
(01:14:31):
from Lake Country and Lutheran forgetting a one seat. We'll
get to a break. Other side, we'll look at division
three to two and one as these brackets come out.
Alongside Ryan Lukeazy, defensive coordinator at Muskigo. This is the
Varsity Blitz High School Sports Show presented by your local
Pickets Save and Metro Market stores only on Fox Sports
nine twenty and your iHeartRadio app. Welcome back to the
(01:14:54):
Varsity Blitz High School Sports Show, presented by your local
Picket Save and Metro Market stores on Mike mcgiffern alongside
Ryan Lukesey's defensive coordinator at Muskego. Hey, let's go right
to the bracket show.
Speaker 7 (01:15:06):
Spencer against WA East filling in the middle Lacrosse Logan
going to host Wisconsin Lutheran and New Berlin. Eisenhower draws
Burlington in the three six Travis, what do you make
of the first two quads here?
Speaker 11 (01:15:19):
Yeah, Grafton has beaten a number of the top Division
three teams already. They have a win over Mount Horror
of Barneveld, and non conference, they beat a good Port
Washington team, they beat Wisconsin Lutheran. So they've, as you said,
kind of jumped way out in front when you look
at the scores in that division. But Plymouth is an
undefeated team down there in the two seed Catholic Memorial
to defending runners up in Division three. Tons of tailent
(01:15:42):
on that team in Mount Horror Barneveld down there as
a two seed coming in with high expectations, a really
strong senior class, had a couple of losses, including one
to Edgewood late in the year, but did end up
sharing that Badger Small conference title.
Speaker 10 (01:15:54):
Alright, he we'll switch gears to the other half of
this bracket. Now Edgewood was a co champion.
Speaker 9 (01:15:59):
They will Ryland or the whole egg sneaking in as
the eight seed.
Speaker 1 (01:16:03):
Waterford show it looks like Pewaukee got in three. Yeah,
Pewaukee got the six seed. Good for them, very happy
for them. They're they're happy to be getting out of
your conference, by the way, and it rightfully so got
eight hundred kids and yeah, I and they're not running
from anything, but they're they're okay with leaving that conference.
I gotta be honest with you. Good for them. Look
(01:16:25):
like Grafting got to one seat. Looked like Catherine Memorial
got to one seed. Edgewood got a one seat. Division three.
There's some quality football programs in our area. They're going
to compete in in in that in Division three and
and might get to Camp Randall is.
Speaker 8 (01:16:40):
There is, There's no doubt about it. And one of
the things that I you know, we were just talking
off air, is seeing there's some travel here. And this
is what the you know, the Coach Association was willing
to do this. You know, you see I think it
was Wisconsin Luther's going to go up to Lacrosse. Yeah,
you know that's that's a three, all right. So there's
gonna be some complaining, right but it's just you.
Speaker 3 (01:16:57):
Know, there's gonna be complaining no matter what. And this
is what we all voted for.
Speaker 8 (01:17:00):
Like, the reality is, let's go enjoy it, attack it,
and may's playoff football. Now you got to strap it
on and let's.
Speaker 1 (01:17:04):
Go, Hey, coach, best team you guys played this year? Yeah,
and and let me throw a couple options out for you.
Mcgwuannae go last night really good obviously Arrowhead really close game,
Nina Beach. The idea if you had to say, hey, listen,
I think the best team we've played against this year,
and that slighting anybody else was.
Speaker 3 (01:17:24):
Yeah, everybody you just mentioned great.
Speaker 8 (01:17:25):
I mean I think that the talent overd Arrowhead, it
only speaks for itself, and they can be it can
be incredibly explosive. You know, you got the state track
team as the as their skilled players and you know
they're they're just good.
Speaker 3 (01:17:34):
They got you know, they're well coached up front with
the old line and they're they're they're good. I mean,
the whole league is good.
Speaker 1 (01:17:39):
Hey, let's go Speccer. They got some teams in our area.
Division three was the second here, Travis.
Speaker 9 (01:17:44):
You just mentioned that final quad.
Speaker 10 (01:17:46):
But when we look all around a lot of talented
top in those top seeds, but it's deep all over
the field. What are some of these maybe lower seeds
you can consider in a bracket.
Speaker 9 (01:17:54):
Then may have a chance to make a Cinderella run here.
Speaker 11 (01:17:56):
Maybe well mentioned Pelwaukee is a sixth seed, again well
tested in that Classic eight conference and have played some
larger opponents. Certainly wins over Ketamarine and Walkashaw West. So
you look at teams like that, but a lot of
depth in Division three. Grafton certainly stands out. Catholic Memorial
is a powerhouse, but there's a lot of really good
teams in Division three.
Speaker 9 (01:18:17):
That's the fun of this time of year. We get
to wait and see that. Ain't that right?
Speaker 4 (01:18:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (01:18:21):
And I'm sure Division two.
Speaker 1 (01:18:23):
Man to Catholic Memorial Grafton. There are some really good
football in Division three. They're gonna get to a break
and they're gonna go to Division two and we'll, man,
we're gonna start going closer to once they get to
Division two, and then we certainly want to be watching
where Muskego goes. Look you talked, I don't know with
(01:18:46):
all the travel, what's gonna happen or do they now
move people west and they don't do much of that now.
It's just whatever the numbers say, right.
Speaker 3 (01:18:55):
That's what it appears.
Speaker 8 (01:18:56):
And quite frankly, I think that's exciting and it appears,
and I don't I haven't you know, analyzed it, but
I think one of the most common complaints was, you know,
when you play like a conference tournament essentially in your
playoff bracket and kind of getting away from that, and
it's exciting to play new teams and some of those
different pieces. So I want to say like that that
that's as part of this process and it's kind of
(01:19:17):
revealing itself today and and the other side they like, yeah,
you're gonna have to travel, And I think we have
to be willing to accept that if if we want
to adopt this new model and continue to do so.
Speaker 3 (01:19:25):
So I think it's got to be exciting, and it
looks like it is so far.
Speaker 1 (01:19:28):
It looks like Keel is coming to play Lake Country
Lutheran and you know there there's there's a travel right there,
and you're talking to coach Brice Kelly said, look, you know,
there there's a chance where we're gonna be happy and
we're going to be close, or you know, we drop
one of these next two, we could be going to
you know, a five hour drive and and let's hope
(01:19:49):
that that doesn't happen, but if it does, we'll figure
it out. We'll take care of business wherever we go.
But it'd be nice not to have to travel at Grantsburg.
Speaker 3 (01:19:57):
Right, Absolutely, you know, there's no doubt about it.
Speaker 8 (01:19:59):
I mean, it's always fun being home, right, There's always
the convenience of playing at home, and if you're fortunate
to have a great environment, even more so.
Speaker 4 (01:20:06):
Right.
Speaker 8 (01:20:06):
But I'll also say, like the travel aspect creates an
opportunity for an experience, you know, and in terms of
like when you're gonna feed the kids and how you're
gonna approach you are you going to stop to have
a movement prep and some of those different things depending
on the length of your travel. So you know, there's
opportunities to be had as a coaching staff in a
program that you're going to expose your kids to if
(01:20:27):
that quite frankly matter, and it could matter when it
comes to state or it's gonna matter when those kids
maybe go play college football or a collegiate board of
something that gets them ready for that.
Speaker 1 (01:20:35):
Hey, coach, how different are you as a defensive mind
than you were fifteen years ago?
Speaker 2 (01:20:43):
Right?
Speaker 1 (01:20:43):
Like we learn and as coaches, look, we don't invent anything.
We steal this part from this guy, and steal from this,
and watch this and steal that and then start to
formulate what we are, what we believe in, what our
core principles are. And I'm wondering how different and how
much you've adjusted over the years.
Speaker 4 (01:21:01):
A ton.
Speaker 3 (01:21:01):
You know, it's funny you mentioned Hunter Roler.
Speaker 8 (01:21:03):
Brian Radish was on staff with us, and he was
in the same class as Hunter, and he actually kind
of makes fun of me daily about Man, I wish
we had all this when I played, because you know,
we we do when we've had We've we've expanded the toolbox,
you know, exponentially over the last probably six years, and
some of it was just we had to. So it
was just adjusting to what we saw and we're just
where we had to continue to grow and push ourselves.
(01:21:25):
So the reality is, if if we were the same
people in staff that we were ten years ago, like,
we're not getting better, right, So if we expect our
kids to keep growing, like we have to grow as
coaches and continue to evolve and just find ways to
improve on what we do and just keep growing.
Speaker 1 (01:21:39):
Hey, before we go to this. I got to tell
you I still watch basketball games and take notes and
out of bonds plays and stuff. And my wife's like,
what are you doing? I go nothing, Why do you go?
You're not coaching right now. I'm not coaching, but it
gets in your in your blood. Hey, let's get there
talking D three, Spencer. Let's go to the bracket show
D two.
Speaker 10 (01:21:57):
Excuse Me'scana the galloping Ghost at the seven and we'll
head to Rice.
Speaker 7 (01:22:01):
Lake Section three West to Pier, number one overall seed
for Division two and the Fox River Classic champs in
the north. Holman, the NVC champ at the bottom in
the two versus seven against Nicolay Hartford was the eight
going to West to Pier. In the four to five
we have Milton and Pulaski. The three to six is
Union Grove and Waukeshaw West.
Speaker 10 (01:22:24):
And rounding out another stacked Division two fields champions.
Speaker 3 (01:22:29):
And hats off James Becker right Becker oilla last in here.
He was in here with us together.
Speaker 1 (01:22:35):
Get the bus, Get the bus ready.
Speaker 10 (01:22:37):
So West East and west Over and Wallwood Tolsa both
getting six seeds in this bracket, and of course Milwaukee
Bayview set the head to Elkhorn.
Speaker 7 (01:22:45):
Four teams from the Badger Large are in the playoff
field this year. Manona Grove carries some serious momentum into
these playoffs after winning its final six games, the last
three by shutouts are Carl Winter has details boy.
Speaker 1 (01:23:00):
So I saw Homestead they got the one seed rightfully
so and I think Drake last night said if we
take care of business tonight, we should be okay and
get to one seed.
Speaker 3 (01:23:09):
Amen. I mean, they've had a tremendous year.
Speaker 8 (01:23:11):
We scrimmaged them, and we could tell they're in the
scrimmage like this is a good football team. And and
I think we knew that they you know, they were
confident in the group that they had coming back and
some of the things that they could achieve. So to
see them carry it out throughout the season, quite frankly,
it's not surprising. I mean, they're a great program. I
love coach Orbman. He's a good dude and just a
great man. So and I know he's coaching his kids.
And his daughter is a heck of an athlete too,
So I always used to kept up on her because
(01:23:31):
I used to coach girls basketball myself and I remember
seeing her the way she moved around and just how
athletic she was. So I don't know if she gets
it from coach Ortmann or what, but maybe it's his wife.
It did no matter, but I'm happy for those guys.
Speaker 1 (01:23:43):
I asked him last night. I said, your your son,
who was a US Supreme Player of the game late
a lot tougher than you where he goes, Oh, no doubt. Yes,
I would totally admit that he got dinged up, went
out and I thought it was right in front of me,
and I thought, man, he might be done. He needed
help to come one play, one play, and he came back.
He wasn't one hundred percent for the next four or five,
(01:24:05):
six place, But boyle boy, he's in charge of that huddle.
Speaker 8 (01:24:09):
And that's football, and he's the quarterback and you know,
and that's kind of the role. And listen, you're gonna
feel pain in the sport and it's really about how
you handle it and then continue to come back.
Speaker 3 (01:24:18):
And it's a sport that's bred on tough people. So
it's not shocking to hear him come back like that.
Speaker 1 (01:24:22):
Hey, coach this year practices different than they were, certainly
way different than they were in the beginning and different
than they were in the middle. I know, as basketball coaches,
we used to pull back a little bit, get more
shots up, get less on their legs, and shorten them
up a lot more film work. Wondering what you guys
do at msqigo.
Speaker 8 (01:24:42):
Yeah, and you hit the nail on the head. We
would like to prioritize the film room first. I mean,
and you're it's an attrition, especially in this league. I mean,
you're going to go through and have to manage injuries
and certain things and take care of your kids. So
I think if you can continue to be really sharp
mentally and continue to just manage yourself physically, I think
that's best practice. You know, you always have to get
(01:25:03):
out and get yourself going as best as you can,
probably a day or two a week. But we definitely
try to limit the on field time as much as
we can to still stay stark and sharp and productive.
But that film and that chalk time together I think
is as more valuable now than really any other time
of the year.
Speaker 1 (01:25:20):
Yeah, I agree with that. Hey, looking at that overall
bracket the division Division two again, Homestead got a one seat.
They'll they'll stay at home. Obviously play Menominee falls, Butnona
Groves the two seed in that bracket. If that game happens,
that's gonna be a heck.
Speaker 2 (01:25:40):
Of a game.
Speaker 3 (01:25:40):
Absolutely, Absolutely.
Speaker 8 (01:25:42):
The two great programs and two really consistent programs that
have sustained success here over the last number of years.
So that'll be a fun one down the road if
they both take care of business.
Speaker 1 (01:25:50):
Yeah, I agree with that. They're gonna get they're gonna
get to a break and they're gonna get to Division one,
and that's what we've been waiting for. I know that's
what you've been waiting for. Hey, how much advantage does it?
Is it for a program like Msquigo that runs what
coach Crowsey and you guys, look, you're the defensive coordinator,
(01:26:10):
that's what you worry about. But what they run on
the offensive side the other teams you don't see it
very often. And come playoff time, now you've got four days,
five days to figure out what you're gonna do defensively.
If you're a defensive coordinator having to go against your offense,
and it's something that you don't see every day, that
(01:26:30):
it's hard to stop.
Speaker 4 (01:26:31):
Man.
Speaker 8 (01:26:32):
Yeah, there's no doubt, you know, and there's no doubt,
and you know, our guys do an incredible job, and
they do an incredible job knowing who we are in
our system and getting our kids in positions to be successful.
And yeah, from a defensive lens, I mean, you just
you have to take the information you get and what
you can see on film and you have to find
ways to imbart that wisdom and your kids to put
them in a position to play as fast as possible. Right,
(01:26:53):
they have to play with clear eyes. They got to
get their feet set and they got to be able
to go and you got to be able to do that.
And I think it is as a simple way to
be maximizing, you know, how effective you can be.
Speaker 1 (01:27:02):
How much of a benefit is it to a school
the size and the program the size of of of
Muskigo that you guys can two platoon a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:27:11):
It's huge, you know, it's huge. And I think again
it's the attrition.
Speaker 8 (01:27:13):
I mean, you're gonna go through wars in the Classic
eight and really in football, so to be able to
kid know, the kids are just gonna be able to
play one way. And obviously there's special teams component there,
but it it I think it drastically improves our ability
to sustain our health throughout the course of a season
nine games and hopefully many more.
Speaker 3 (01:27:31):
After that, And then that's significant.
Speaker 1 (01:27:33):
Well, I can tell you that if what happens in
this show happens and you get a one seed in
Badger gets it two and that game happens, you're gonna
miss a little bit of sleep, right, You're gonna miss
a little sleep with what the Hansler runs over.
Speaker 3 (01:27:47):
There, There's no doubt about it.
Speaker 8 (01:27:49):
And then I was telling you guys off the air,
I love Coach Handler, I love Coach Crunk, which their
DC like, we know we're friendly. I consider those guys friends.
And if that were the case, that there's no out
about what you just said. But you have to be
an opportunity. You know that we for sure look forward to.
Speaker 1 (01:28:05):
Thank goodness, you got a baby in the house, because
you're gonna be up at night anyway. So now you'll
feed the baby to watch a little more more tape,
to get on huddled just a little bit more, won't you.
Speaker 3 (01:28:14):
Uh No, there's no doubt.
Speaker 8 (01:28:15):
Kaya has been able to watch them film with me
already this year, so she'll make sure that We're ready
to go, and she'll keep me accountable.
Speaker 2 (01:28:21):
Look.
Speaker 1 (01:28:21):
I don't say this a lot, but one of the
cutest little kids I've ever seen those highes. Man, I
just said, here's my watch, here's my wallet, here are
my keys. I could never say no to that one.
Thank goodness she got looks from missile case here.
Speaker 3 (01:28:35):
Thank God for my wife, amy Ye.
Speaker 1 (01:28:38):
Special place in Heaven for coaches wives. Man, Hey, let's
get let's get let's go into the bracket show. They're
talking d one get in here.
Speaker 10 (01:28:46):
They'll host Chippawa Falls. Chihi though a team you can't
look out on. They've had some big wins this season.
In the four and five game, Oco Walk facing mak
wanna go, Look Wanta go facing oconom Walk.
Speaker 9 (01:28:58):
Excuse me, Hudson. We'll host Son Prairie East and to
peer will head to Nina thoughts here. I was at
chiple with Falls game.
Speaker 7 (01:29:05):
Last night, Cardinals won at Menominee for the first time
in eighteen years to jump up and get that eight seed.
Speaker 10 (01:29:11):
I also saw him beat DC Everest earlier in the year,
who was a great team Level four that lost to
Wanakey to go to state last season, who had a
good bunch again.
Speaker 9 (01:29:17):
So two big wins for Chaihai.
Speaker 11 (01:29:19):
Yeah, and that obviously got them into the postseason, those
two wins especially. You know, you look at this bracket.
You've got Wanakey sitting there. You've got mcgwanago as a
classic eight powerhouse coming in as a four seed.
Speaker 1 (01:29:30):
Nina down there.
Speaker 9 (01:29:31):
The Rockets shocked.
Speaker 11 (01:29:33):
Last night, one of the biggest upsets we've seen in years.
They came in looking to cap off a FBA conference title,
lost to a one win Hortonville team. Completely shocking loss
for Nina, but they still get a two seed. They've
got some really good wins. They beat Muskego, they beat
Kimberly earlier this year, and.
Speaker 7 (01:29:51):
Hudson could be a tough test there. A few weeks
from now, Arrowhead number three overall seed. As we look
at our section two, Arrowhead will get Wassaw West DC
Everest goes to Brookfield East in the five to four.
Kimberly just mentioned that conference Race will host Fondilac and
it's Hamilton getting Marquette in the two versus seven.
Speaker 11 (01:30:14):
What stands out here a couple conference rematches down here
at the bottom of this bracket. Hamilton and Marquette. Of course,
Marquette won a state title just a couple of years ago.
In Kimberly and Fondilac is a FVA conference rematch. Kimberly
won the game earlier this year between these two teams,
but Fondlac has been a little bit of a thorn
in the side of the papermakers over the last few years.
So again, some interesting conference rematches in that one.
Speaker 9 (01:30:36):
All right, we will keep things moving. Now to section three.
Speaker 10 (01:30:39):
In this Division one bracket, Muskego the number one overall seed.
Here the Classic eight champions are set to host Madison West, Kenosha, Bradford.
We'll head to Racine Case Middleton, We'll host Milwaukee Hamilton Autobahn.
And at the bottom of your screen the seven seed
Oak Creek set to get in here and head to Badger.
Speaker 9 (01:30:59):
And we'll go to section four.
Speaker 7 (01:31:00):
Now Franklin number two overall seed in this bracket. Southeast
champions Milwaukee Reagan at the bottom of the screen won
the Milwaukee City Richardson title. Verona the five against Milwaukee,
Pulaski Bayport the three seed against Appleton North.
Speaker 11 (01:31:17):
Here Travis break down this squad for us. Well, it's
a lot about Franklin and Bayport. Bayport's the defending state champions.
They got a three seed, take on a solid Appleton
North team in the first game, and then Franklin coming
in undefeated once again, swan song for head coach Lewis Brown,
looking to get back to Madison as we've seen a
number of times.
Speaker 7 (01:31:38):
Let's dive in a little deeper on that Classic eight conference.
Muskeego won the league at seven to zero and is
a number one seed. Mcguanago and occonom Miwak will face
each other in Level one, and Arrowhead is also a
number one seed. The Warhawks coming off huge wins over Mcgwonago,
Hamilton and Kettle Moraine to close the regular season. This
group has been working since June first, taking advantage of expanding.
Speaker 1 (01:31:59):
We don't we don't need sit and listen to the Arrowhead.
Let's talk about uh. I think Franklin got a great bracket,
That's just what I'm saying. I think they got Bayport's
in there, Milwaukee Reagan got the two seed, and Bayport's
awfully good. I think Bayport's gonna give Franklin a little
bit of trouble, but I think they got a really
(01:32:21):
good bracket.
Speaker 4 (01:32:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:32:22):
I think both those teams are in great positions. Uh
super too.
Speaker 8 (01:32:26):
I mean just those are great programs, super talented, well coached,
and and there that would be your potential unlikely matchup.
There's no doubt if you're just looking at the bracket,
but think.
Speaker 1 (01:32:36):
Of the Muskeigo bracket. But I just got a chance.
Yet they took it off really quick.
Speaker 3 (01:32:40):
They sure did.
Speaker 8 (01:32:41):
There it is in the top right hand corner. All
I know is we're excited and we're gonna get Madison
West and that's that's gonna be our focus period, point
blanket in the story there. So you know, we got
to take air business. We'll go one and know and
we're going to continue to march from there.
Speaker 1 (01:32:54):
And we were right. Badger got the two seed. I
my goodness. Yeah, that's it.
Speaker 2 (01:32:59):
That's that.
Speaker 1 (01:33:00):
I like that bracket. I think there are some teams
in there that that could give either the one seed,
which is you guys at Muskego or two Badger two
seed some trouble. There's some quality football teams in that bracket.
Speaker 3 (01:33:13):
Yeah, there's no doubt about it.
Speaker 8 (01:33:14):
I mean all the way down through you know Old
Creek at a seven and that's the school obviously we're
really familiar with. You know, we play annually now for
it's been the last five years and that's been a
long time rival. We're in the Southeast Conference. So there's
no question.
Speaker 1 (01:33:25):
That Arrowhead bracket is that one. That's tough bracket. Sussex
Hamilton's really good. They got the two seed. There are
some brookfieldies, there are some teams in that bracket that
might might jump up and surprise people.
Speaker 3 (01:33:36):
There's no doubt.
Speaker 8 (01:33:37):
I mean, Sussex is really good and coach Gum's a
good friend of mine. And then Sussex Scen Arrow had
played a couple weeks back, and it was two weeks
ago and it came down and all the sussequent for
two I think towards the end of the game. It
ain't converted.
Speaker 3 (01:33:48):
They still got the ball back three plays later and
they blocked up on they just weren't able to kind
of convert and finish.
Speaker 8 (01:33:52):
But so, really good teams, a really good football there.
And we know Brooke East is a good football team.
We played them, you know, I think back in week five,
you know, and they're they're tough. So that's the there's
no recording, no question. That's a good bracket.
Speaker 1 (01:34:01):
Yeah, And I saw Brookies against Brooks Centraal. I was
probably they're good. Coach Farley's doing a nice job with
that team and those guys. Will the guys get after
a little bit. Look at that Dadavan Jordans and heating
Cooley on TV. They sponsor us here in the studio
and I'm glad you pointed that out, Coach. I'm glad
you pointed that out. It never gets old this time
(01:34:24):
of year. Right, you were excited to see the bracket
you're I can see the light bulb over your head.
I gotta go watch Madison West. I got to figure out,
you know, if we get past that, who we get?
Who do I think? What are we gonna run? You're
the look, the face, you reaction you have right now
is different than when you first walked in.
Speaker 2 (01:34:43):
Coach.
Speaker 1 (01:34:44):
Now it looks like you want to get out of
here and go break down film. But remember, you know,
you got got a little one at home, got a
beautiful wife. You're gonna go apple orchards or something today.
Speaker 2 (01:34:54):
Right, not one bit?
Speaker 3 (01:34:55):
Well, Yes, I got a beautiful one at home. I
got a beautiful white at home, and I love.
Speaker 8 (01:34:59):
My life Courtney, and Kyle is probably about to get
up from a nap, so I'm excited to greet here
from that. But no, we're going to start our preparation
on Madison West, and we'll make sure our kids are
ready to go come under here.
Speaker 1 (01:35:09):
Do you have where your coaches get together today or
where you put the game plan together and get playing
get together tomorrow?
Speaker 8 (01:35:15):
You know, the advent of technology, a lot of what
we do is through group chats, texting, maybe the occasional
Google meet and phone calls and things like that. So
it's there'll be nothing physically in person. Right, We're gonna
do it all. We let our kids take the weekend
and we put the plan together, and then we implement
everything we need to come Monday, and and then we
attacked a week from there.
Speaker 1 (01:35:33):
Ryan, thanks for coming in. You know, I'm a big
fan of yours and it's and I didn't know your history,
but now I get it. I get where where you
know all of the journeys and the locker rooms you've
been in, and all the mentors that you've taken a
little bit from and uh, and I get it. Good luck,
good luck in this run. I hope it goes a
long way and and you guys end up at Camp Randal,
(01:35:55):
and I appreciate the time you always give.
Speaker 8 (01:35:57):
Me us too, and I really appreciate you just having
us and I always look forward to it. And anytime
we can talk with Schigo football in this community, it
means a lot and that I'm just super thankful and
I appreciate you and what we do for high school sports.
This is always one of my favorite weekend listens, So
thank you man.
Speaker 1 (01:36:10):
