Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Varsity Blitz high School Sports show, as
always presented by your local Pick and Save stores on
the Big nine twenty in your iHeartRadio app. We are
coming live from the Donovan and Jorganson Heating and Cooling Studios.
Donovan Jorgenson dot com, you turn your furnace on here
soon if you haven't done it already, Ryan, have you
done it yet?

Speaker 2 (00:20):
It's on.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
It's on.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Yeah, it's seve real low, but it's on.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
We have a fireplace in our condo that kind of
warms the thing up. But we're gonna have to turn
that bad boy on any issues you have. Donovan Jorgenson
dot com could take care of you. I trust these
guys a lot. They've come out to a number of
my family members' homes. And when you deal with the
guys at Donavan Jorgenson, you're dealing with one of the owners.

(00:44):
It's the largest employee owned HVAC company in the state
of Wisconsin. Textans some winning coaches from last night, and
I've got a winning athletic director in and a game
that I didn't I didn't see it happening like that coach.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
I gotta tell you, well, I'll tell you a little
story here. So sometimes I asked some of the staff
members or people around the program. I said, give me
your prediction, let me know, And yesterday I didn't have to.
You know, sometimes strength coaches they got a weird twitch
to them, but they know what's going on all the
time every time because they're constantly around the kids and
then they're in every program and they kind of have

(01:21):
a pulse on the whole system, if you will. And
I kid you not. Coach malossit said to me about
eight times yesterday. I didn't even have to ask him.
He goes, We're gonna get you running clock tonight. I said,
running clock, Coach. He's like, we're gonna get you running clock.
Just trust me, We're getting you running clock. I said,
you're gonna put a steak dinner on that because he
owes me three already. But he's like yeah, and he

(01:42):
said and then he said it again, and he said
it again. He said again, we got to running clock.
He walked off the sideline over me. He goes, I
told you we get you running clock. So well they
knew something.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Franklin is Franklin really good football team? Really good? Yes,
really good?

Speaker 3 (01:58):
YEP.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
And I watched the game. I was going back and
forth streaming games, trying to watch a number of them,
and man, Muskigo, I think offensively and defensively on the lines.
I thought they warmed down a little bit.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeah, yeah, we brought it and we didn't. You know,
our kids weren't thinking last night. They were just playing,
and they played together, and they played fast, and Franklin
had some things and they have some special kids, there's
no doubt. And sometimes in high school athletics thing snowball
and then it's it's hard to get over and get
past it, you know, regardless of the sport. But Muskeigo

(02:35):
was a better team last night, and hopefully they can
be the better team again next Friday as they move
on to Level three.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Well, and you got to travel now, right, and you
travel last last night I went to Franklinton, but heading
up to Nina. Were you surprised that Nina Nina hit
Kimberally pretty good? Thirty four or fourteen? My goodness, I again,
you know, I didn't see that one coming.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah, you know, the Kimberly people, I think felt better
about their matchup because they lost a tight one to them.
A few weeks ago, you know, in their conference which
allowed them to tie for the league championship up there,
they had some kids coming back and they felt like
they're a little more healthy. But it sounds like Nina's
gotten a little more healthy too. And we know, playing
Nina in Week one, their skill positions and some of

(03:20):
the kids on their team are really really special and
if you talk to the Nina faithful, this is exactly
where they saw themselves being. You know when they started
the year coming into the year, they saw themselves going
through Kimberly on their march to Madison. But they're they're
in Level three and now they got the Muschigo Warriors
and if they can, they're probably chomping at the bit

(03:41):
because they're thinking they're going to have ms their Week
one loss where they probably didn't feel like they put
their best foot forward.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Yeah, so Mesquigo getting a little healthier or is that
what's the difference between the Mestigo of last night compared
to three four weeks ago.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Do you think there have been a couple of kids
that have come back from injury. There's no doubt, you know,
we lost one or two again last night. That's just
kind of the ebbs and flows of any football team
throughout the season, you know. But the the our defense
has been consistently good. Our defenses has kind of been there.
There's been maybe a few few games where maybe our

(04:16):
run fits weren't dialed up exactly the way we liked him,
and a couple of teams got a few things on us.
But we've shored those up, We've we've fixed those o
Our younger kids have grown up, They've they've learned the system,
they know exactly what's the expected of them. We do
a really good job of coaching there. And then our
offense has brought some flavor. You have to bring something,

(04:36):
you got to have. You have to have something that
gets the kids excited and energized and and whatever that is,
whether it's a tempo change, whether it's a new shift,
new motion, whether it's a you know, new plays, new
sub pack, its new something. And I think you got
a little of both of those pieces, where the defense
has been consistently good and the offense has found a
little bit of their wrinkles that they need, and it's

(04:58):
allowed us to have some energy and have a little
bit of fun.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Well, you guys went Muskigo went. There's four weeks there
where you scored zero points against Germanytown, you scored three
against Darrohead, put up a bunch of points against kam Rain,
and then put up seven against Oconomwalk. So three out
of four weeks you scored three zero seven And then

(05:21):
the last three weeks fifty against Wakshow West, forty two
against O Creek, forty two against Franklin. Whatever that new
wrinkle is, you know, somebody's going to figure it out, right.
They haven't figured it out yet, I guess, but my
goodness to put up forty two against a really good
defense like Franklin was impressive to me.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Yeah, And I think what you've seen in those last
three weeks is you've seen a little bit more balance.
Last night, there's a little more tempo to our offense.
And typically what do I mean by that getting in
and out of the huddle, getting up to the line,
calling the play and going and not waiting for our
opponent and letting them get nice and come where. I
think that bid us in a few games earlier in
the season, where you know, we we dictate our tempo

(06:06):
to people, then then they're they're on their heels catching
us and you know, we did it at the end
of a game that we lost earlier in the season,
and it helped us. And I think we've kind of
learned those lessons and kept modifying, adapting, getting kids back
and and and continually having great communication with the student
athlete as well, getting their feedback and where they're at,
how they feel, and what do they think's great and

(06:28):
what are they believe in and really going back to that.
And then we found a way to run the ball.
But we found balance and little things, whether that's an
unbalance thing to get the defense shifting or a quick
snap a few times throwing the pass and mixing some
more little screens and stuff like that, and it all helps.
But you need to have that balance. You need to
stretch defenses horizontally and vertically, and we've been doing that

(06:51):
the last three weeks.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Ryan, you talked about their pace last night, their pace,
and and they they before they snapped it, they would adjust,
the tight end would go to one side, and they
were making Franklin adjust to them quickly, like like, and
and I thought, man, Franklin, And again I wasn't at
the game and I'm not on the sidelines, but it

(07:13):
seemed to me that they were shifting so much that
they weren't just concentrating on staying in their gap and
and making sure that you know, they took care of
what they had to do, but they shifted every time.
You guys didn't get and Musquigo did on almost every play, yep.
And they the quickness of them calling the play, getting

(07:33):
the line, doing the one shifting a little bit, and
having the defense shifting with him and then running the
play I thought took Franklin kind of out of their
mindset a little bit.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Well, it just forces you to find your keys quickly,
make your communication quickly, make sure you're lined up first
and foremost. I mean that that's happened to us in
the past, where we've made some shifts and the other
teams just don't get lined up. It's allowed the offensive
line to make quick line calls and just stay with
the rules and run and do more path blocking type

(08:05):
stuff that it has helped as well. But yeah, I
think I don't think Franklin probably saw us moving at
that type of a tempo. But if you if you
sit there and hang out, Coach Brown's got all sorts
of games up his sleeve. He's a great coach, really
really good and and so I think, uh, Coach Crowsey
and our staff kind of knew that and said, we

(08:26):
just can't stand there and and you know, just take
it if you will. We gotta we gotta dictate our
our our tempo and go from there. And so that's
kind of what we did.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Hey, I'm gonna run down the show today. And what
I like about days like this is I'm texting winning
coaches right now say hey, can we get a couple
of minutes with you? And I've I've seved a couple
of text messages back from Bill, from Bill Jacquelin, He's
coming on, from Slinger, Matt Henzler from Late Geneva Badger.
I've sent a text out to Greg Bradsgal from Lake

(08:57):
Country Lutheran's coming on. I've tried to reach out to
a couple other coaches in fact, and to see if
we can get those guys on. If they respond, we'll
get them on. If not, I've got you till about
ten thirty. At ten forty will introduce you to our
Colonel Electric Superhero of the week, and this segment. Yet
at the end of this segment, in fact, in a

(09:18):
couple of minutes. We're gonna be joined by Greg Clark.
He's the AAYFL league commissioner. And they had their championship
games going on today and all Little Creek. They just
kicked off at nine o'clock. They've got three games going on.
I was at Franklin the other night to give their
eighth grade team the aa YFL Team of the Week.
The week before it was at Arrowhead and Franklin. The

(09:41):
last play the game against Germantown threw about a fifty
yard hail Mary that scored to beat Germantown. And it
looked a little bit like that Washington against the Bears, right.
But this kid, this quarterback, he threw it about forty
five eighth grader in the air, a perfect spot and
a kid went up who would never this is the

(10:03):
first year has ever played football, went up high, pointed
it and when he landed, he turned and there was
nobody between him and the gold line. He had to
go about ten yards, but nobody was behind him, and
because I don't think they thought he could throw it
that far. And the kid slung it and this kid
went up high. He's about it. He's about six feet
the receiver eighth grader went up high pointed it and

(10:25):
when he and I asked him when you landed, and
he goes, I couldn't believe there's nobody around me. I
just turned and took off and it was between you know,
it was ten.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
Yards and those kids will never forget that, never remember.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
The smiles on these kids' faces were pretty incredible and
it was really fun. So we'll talk to Greg Clark
here in about two minutes. We're going to give him
a call and I have him talk about what's going
on today. Over Atill Creek. Nine to twenty. Bill Jacqueline
from Slingers going to join us. They got a big
game against Homestead coming up. I'm a big fan of Jacqueline.
I like him a lot.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
He does great, super positive guy, great coach.

Speaker 1 (11:02):
And then we'll follow up Jacquelin with Matt Hensler. I
don't know you beat that. They just got by Horlick
played them tough last night.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Something tells me Hensler will have a few one liners
for us based on.

Speaker 1 (11:15):
You know, and I laugh. And I talked to Handler
every once in a while, but we don't talk to
him a ton during the season. Become playoff time, He's like,
you call me every week, and I hope you get
to call me every single week because that means we're
still playing and we'll get a hold of Hensler. I'm
hoping that Matt Harris from Arrowhead response because I'd love
to have him.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Come on.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
I'm gonna send a text to uh BOC as well,
because they didn't. They beat a really good team last
week and in a newspaper article, Box said, good, you know,
we're we're okay. We we We were hoping if we
continue to play that maybe we get one more chance
with Arrowhead and and he got it and Gannevo's not
afraid to talk about what he's feeling, right, And I

(11:58):
love that about guys. Look a lot of times as
coaches we need to be politically correct. Oh you're kidding. Yeah,
they're great coaches. They're great, They're really well coached. They're
the best team we've ever played, you know, the low
Holts way of doing things. Navox just can tell you
what he truly feels, and what he truly feels is.
We'd hope to get to get a shot at those
guys again.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Yeah, they had a tough situation at the end of
their game earlier this year.

Speaker 4 (12:22):
They did not.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
Necessarily agree with the decision that was made on the field,
and obviously it cost him and allowed the opponent to
do a few more plays and whatnot. So they feel
like they have something to prove. And then that's why
you're getting those raw emotions out of coach. And he's
not signed away from anything. And he'll invite him down
to mcgwonago and they'll be great hosts down there.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
Yes they will.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
And you know what, if I were you, I would
maybe go camp out to get a ticket to the
Absolutely that thing is going to be sold out, and
they'll be sold out before the week's.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
Over standing room only. They won't stop selling tickets. They'll
just keep packing them in. Everyone's standing on that track
and away they go.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
Yeah, I got it. I hope Canevok likes me today
because I want to get maybe a pass.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
To that one.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
They'll get you in the press box.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
Yeah, I don't even just on the sideline, shake hands,
kiss babies a little bit, and watch really good football. Spencer.
If we can reach out with to Greg Clark, that
would be great. I always forget our headsets, but there's
our headsets and so we can we can talk with
with Greg. Surprises from last night for you.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Across the bracket, uh, you know, not too many. The
DC Everest over Madison Memorial. They are a seven seed,
and if you talk to the people in Dane County,
they really thought like Madison Memorial was a very very
talented team and it it just didn't happen for them
last night. And d C Everest made the trip down

(13:50):
from Schofield all the way down to Madison and took
it to them in a big way, doubling them up
forty five twenty four. So that was a surprise at
a Division one, Division two you know nothing other I
mean the Badger score being a one game or or
one score game or sorry, one point game against Horlick.
It'll be interesting to learn about what exactly transpired there.

(14:14):
But other than that, there is no who won the
West of Piers some Prairie game.

Speaker 1 (14:18):
That one wasn't doing west west of Pier.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
That's what I thought, because some Prairie as the host.
Typically when someone doesn't report the score, they're the host,
and the oh really yeah, yea yeah, they.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
They they beat them. And I can tell you that
there was a couple a couple of a little surprising.
I think when we talk with Greg bradscal from Lake
Country Lutheran, he he will tell you that that he
thought on the Saint Mary Springs they'd have to go
there and play them. And I think by by not

(14:50):
having to play them and having you know, uh, look
to be able to play another home game and and
and get moving with that, they they they beat. I
think it was Winnebago Lutheran. I'm going to look right now,
and I was going to go to that game last
night and I just ended up staying home to watch
as many games as I could. But I can tell

(15:13):
you that when you when you're a team that that
that beats find the lacked Saint Mary Springs a week
after they beat you really soundly the week before that
was kind of their super bowl. And Winnebago Lutheran really
good football team, but I think that was their super bowl.
Lake Country Lutheran then beat them thirty five nothing, and

(15:34):
they keep going.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
That's a tough trip for Winnebago coming down to Lake
Country Lutheran, you know, on on the road and yep,
the emotions of the week before that.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
And yeah, do you know and I'm going to try
to also reach out if I can to the head
coach for Milwaukee Academy of Science. Yes, they're still playing.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
Hey, everyone said this is their deal, Like this was
their deal. Pay attention. You said it earlier in the season, like, hey,
they can play football.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
Now one hundred Yep, we are. We are now joined
by Greg Clark. He is the league commissioner for the
aa YFL. And this is a really big Saturday for
these guys. I can tell you that they they got
their championship games going on. They just started, in fact,
with the Journey House against Wahwao Tostal West. All the
games are at ol Creek High School right now, Journey

(16:23):
House against Wahwao Tostal West at noon, New Berlin West
against Waukesha South, and then the Division One Franklin against
Lake Country. Greg Clark, how you doing today?

Speaker 5 (16:35):
I'm doing fantastic. And it's quite an honor to be
on your show today when you guys have all the
excitement going on from the high school playoffs.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
Man, it's you want to talk about a two hour
show of talking just football right now? Youth football, high
school football. And I absolutely love today. What's funny for
me is I've been doing this a long time. You
don't get nervous to it shows, but on a Sarah
morning at nine o'clock when you don't have any coaches

(17:03):
lined up yet, And thank goodness, I've been doing this
a long time and I can some of these guys
are really kind with their time, and I'm starting to
send text messages and they're like, yeah, I no problem,
come on whenever you need me. And thank you for that. Hey, Greg,
I got it. Before we talk about what's going on
at oh Creek with these games today, I want to
thank you and the guys over at the AAYFL for

(17:26):
sponsoring and being part of what I do on this
show and for us teaming up. It was so fun
this year to be able to go out to different
teams that won the AAYFL Team of the Week and
hand off that plaque and just some really good coaches,
great kids. A lot of times parents would come out
to take pictures. And it's been a really good partnership

(17:47):
between the two of us.

Speaker 5 (17:49):
Yes, it has, and I appreciate you, Mike and all
you've done and going out to all the teams. And
I said this before, but the little motivational speech that
you give those teams is awesome. It motivates them. It
still all the hard work they put in and having
you show up and do the Team of the week.

(18:10):
And again, I heard you talking earlier about the Franklin game.

Speaker 4 (18:13):
That's what youth.

Speaker 5 (18:14):
Football is all about. Those kids will remember this for
the rest of their lives. They'll remember the Team of
the week for the rest of their lives. And it's
a great thing we've done. This year is the first
year we've done this, and it's been a great partnership.

Speaker 1 (18:26):
Matt, I appreciate that. Hey, so right now Division three
Journey House against Wahwatosa West is there's.

Speaker 5 (18:33):
Score, Yes, it's twelve to eight, and I do believe
this could be a barn burner. They've had a couple
of really long runs. Journey House just had a long
kickoff return, and yeah, their kids are playing hard.

Speaker 1 (18:49):
Man, that's awesome. Hey, we've got to get to a break.
Greg Clark again, thank you. If you're thinking about going
out and supporting these young student athletes. It's five down
to get in, and I believe correct, five dollars to
get in.

Speaker 5 (19:05):
Yeah, five dollars, and it is an absolute beautiful ball
football day. It's it's awesome. We got a lot of
great teams out here today, some great programs.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
If you can't get out there, the games are being
streamed live on the website at AAYFL dot org. I
would recommend getting out to Creek High School. Nine o'clock
game going out right now noon New Berlin West against
Waksha South and at one o'clock Franklin at against Lake Country.
Greg Clark, thank you very much, enjoy the day.

Speaker 5 (19:35):
Thanks Mike, you have a great one.

Speaker 1 (19:38):
Bett, take care of coach Hey, let's get to a break.
Other side of the break, Bill Jacklin is going to
join as head coach at Slinger. This is the Varsity
Blitz High School Sports Show presented by your local Pick
and Safe Stores. I'm the Big nine twenty in your
iHeart Radio app. Welcome back to the Varsity Blitz High
School Sports Show presented by your local Pick and Save Stores.
Coming from the Donovan to Jorganson Heating and Cooling Studios,

(19:59):
IM we give her alongside the athletic director at Muskigo.
He is Ryan McMillan. We're now joined by the head
football coach at Slinger. They beat Man a really good
Wolwo Toasta East team last night, twenty one to three.
They get Homestead coming in, and I know they had
a barn burner when they played Homestead before. And Bill

(20:19):
Jacklin's not sleeping at all this week. I can tell
you that, Hey, coach, how are you?

Speaker 3 (20:25):
I'm great man?

Speaker 1 (20:27):
What a good man? What a good win last night?
What was What was the atmosphere like at Slinger last night?

Speaker 6 (20:33):
Wild? Like it's been all year, A lot of fun,
a lot of energy. It's a special place. I'm lucky
Amanda coach there because it's a very very unbelievable atmosphere
when you're playing a Slinger.

Speaker 1 (20:46):
Hey, coach, I know the respect that you have for
the Wawa Tosa East team. And Tom does a great
job over there, and he's really brought Wallwo Tosa East
to at a whole different level that they haven't been
at for a few years. And what did you think
of that team, uh coming in and how much respect
do you have for those players in that that that

(21:07):
program after beating him twenty one three, Well.

Speaker 6 (21:12):
First of all, last the first time I actually talked
to Tom's little unbelievable class.

Speaker 1 (21:17):
That guy, the whole lot I mean, hey, Bill, that's
the first time you've ever talked to coach Swintle really.

Speaker 6 (21:23):
Had a conversation with him ever. Like I've seen them,
but I've never really been they never had an opportunity
to talk. And I was like, unbelievable class.

Speaker 1 (21:30):
That guy, Like Wow, that that two guys that have
been around high school football for a long time. And
I'm glad you guys got to talk because I'm a
huge fan of yours and I'm a really huge fan
of his, and I got a feeling you guys will
start talking a little bit more.

Speaker 6 (21:46):
Yeah, it was great.

Speaker 3 (21:47):
Uh. We thought we knew they're fast, knew that was
the key. Uh.

Speaker 6 (21:51):
They have two backs that are unreal and they make
their team really special. And we were I'll say our
defense definitely came. Came to play two weeks in a row. Now, offense,
we had struggled in the first half a little bit,
and our defense just kept us in the game all night.
I mean, this is the second week in our defense
had kept the team minus yards passing and so that's huge.

Speaker 4 (22:13):
When your defense can keep you.

Speaker 6 (22:15):
In the game and hold a team like that to
three points.

Speaker 4 (22:17):
I was like, that's something special.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
Hey, coach, is Tosa running the wing tea over there?

Speaker 4 (22:23):
They run the wing t Yes, shut.

Speaker 2 (22:26):
Down the wing to last night. That's not easy to do.

Speaker 1 (22:28):
Not easy to do.

Speaker 6 (22:30):
So he Uh, they had special kids. They're very fast
all over the field. I think that that was the
key uh for them all season, as their speed and
we you can't really sometimes tell on film, but when
you see it live and in person, it's like, yeah,
they're fast.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
That's awesome. Coach, Hod your son play. Give us the honest,
honest evaluation.

Speaker 6 (22:52):
I did all right, Okay, I think you did great.

Speaker 1 (22:57):
Coach, Hey, be nice to him.

Speaker 5 (23:01):
I like you.

Speaker 1 (23:02):
He was so good when you when you brought him
in studio. Hey, coach a couple of weeks ago. Yeah,
you played Homestead at home and had a barn burner,
you know, with with three seconds left on the clock.
You guys went for two and and and got it
and you beat him twenty to twenty one. And now
you've got them coming back. It's gonna be you know.

(23:23):
I talked about the mcguanagall Arrowhead game. I got a
feeling you might want to get tickets early for the
Slayer Homestead game.

Speaker 3 (23:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (23:31):
I think it's gonna be a slug fast. I think
I know what they're feeling, like, Hey, they let that
one slip away and they should have won. And I
think our kids are feeling like we let a lot,
We dropped a lot of plate passes and gave up
a lot in that first half. We should have scored
some more and so they're feeling they got something to prove.
So I think it'll be, you know, a tough opponent.

(23:52):
And I had a feeling in my gut that that
we're gonna probably face them again, and it came true.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
Last time you played, your guys were from my understanding,
I wasn't at the game, but you guys were set
ready to kick the extra point to go to overtime,
and there was a time out taken. I don't think
it was on your sideline, and then you guys huddle
up and decided to go for two. Is that correct?

Speaker 3 (24:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (24:19):
We were a little discombobulated when we scored because we
were rushing down the field and we didn't have a
time out. So after a third down, they rushed the
line and we did a quarterback sneak and I was
just like, I love our kicker. He is money and
I'm like, I think this is probably the safe bet
when they called time out. Believe it or not. The
only time I had a chance to win a Commone

(24:39):
championship was against the guy right now in your studio
and he kicked my butt. I'm sitting there going, I'm like,
you know what, let's just let's win it now. So
he gave us all the time to kind of just
take a breath and get the play we wanted. I
wasn't the play I necessarily wanted reverse pass, but he
often Cordion called it, and I was just like, be

(25:01):
a hero or zero on this one.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
The only way to go, coach, put it all out
there and take it.

Speaker 4 (25:07):
Man.

Speaker 1 (25:07):
Oh man, well, I'm really proud of you, your your guys,
and and that it's gonna be tough for the whole
school to do a lot of homework this week. You
might want to call some of your friends that are
teaching at the high school and say, don't give any
of this guy's homework this week. We got we got
an awfully big game against Homestead coming up, and I
got a feeling this week at practice, you guys are

(25:29):
gonna have some fun. But man, as a coaching staff,
Homestead's gonna they They've got a lot of problems that
they can cause you on the field coaching. And I
know your staff is probably breaking down film today to
find out some of the things they're doing a little
bit differently. As as Ryan talked about, look throughout the year,
you know, you start tweaking things, you start putting things in,

(25:50):
you start running things just a little bit differently to
cause some problems for the team you're playing against. And
and I know that that Drake and his staff are
are are in the same stuff. And it's gonna be
a great week, but you're gonna be tired by the
end of the week. Coach.

Speaker 6 (26:06):
Yeah, if you're playing a common appoint you played before,
you better change a few things.

Speaker 3 (26:11):
Because we know each other well.

Speaker 6 (26:12):
So it's gonna be a little tweaking here and there
and we'll see what comes of it.

Speaker 1 (26:17):
Hey, coach, can we talk a little bit about your quarterback.
I was really impressed with him a lot, and when
I watched him against Hartford, I thought, man, he's got
a lot of poise and he's he's he's a kid
that understands how to play that position and to create
space to be able to get some of the throws
that he wants. He's had a really good year for you,

(26:39):
and and he's a kid that I know that that
he owns the huddle and you have you really like
this kid. You think that he's the leader on that
that offense. The line gives him some time, but if
it breaks down, he's really good at keeping his eyes
down the field and throwing that thing.

Speaker 6 (26:56):
Yeah, I love Mike. I'm gonna say I love Michael.
I'm gonna get a little motion because you know, I
know Michael. Michael's in my fourth grade class and I
know him a long time, and he is a heart kid.
He is the heart and soul of our team. He's
a very talented quarterback. I wanted to play at the
next level. I think he can. And I just feel
like I usually give our quarterbacks a hard time. And

(27:17):
you know these are interceptions, and as coach, you get upset.
Why I get throw I don't say Anthony to Michael.
Michael takes care of it. And he he is the
calm in presence on our team. All his buddies play defense,
so in practice he gets ripped on enough by his buddies.
He throws to pick the practice and return the ball
and hand it right to him. So I can't say

(27:37):
enough about him.

Speaker 3 (27:38):
He's a special kid.

Speaker 1 (27:40):
Yeah, I love that. You know, the people up at
with sports, we got to get contact with them. They
got they had you lose in that game three nothing
last night. So I'm on your website and they have
you losing the Toast to East three nothing last night.
So they've got your overall record at ten and one.
So we got it. We got Mikes, Travis gets that fixed.

(28:01):
There's there's no ten and one team in Slinger right now.

Speaker 6 (28:05):
Yeah, he got my name right though. A couple years
ago he was calling me mister coach Jackman.

Speaker 1 (28:09):
So yeah, well you still called your Bill in that hue, right, Yeah, Yeah,
that's funny to me. Hey, Billy, thank you so much
for a couple of minutes of your time. Good luck
against Homestead. When you look at the games in our
area coming up on Friday, I it's gonna be really
difficult for guys like me that don't have a dog

(28:31):
in the fight, that want to just go out and
see a really good high school football game to choose
from all the games that that we have in this area.
But certainly the Homestead at Slinger game is one that
a lot of people that just want to go see
a great high school game are going to come out
and see.

Speaker 3 (28:48):
I appreciate that greatly.

Speaker 6 (28:49):
Yeah, it's it's special this time of year when you
get the third fourth level, it's like it's just there's
something in the air that just makes everything better.

Speaker 2 (28:58):
It does good new coaches you're in you'll be breathing
Slinger air that day, so it'll be awesome for you.

Speaker 1 (29:04):
Yes, you are, man. It's great to get a home
game at this level. Bill Jackett, head football coach at
Slayer Go owls. Hey, good luck this week.

Speaker 6 (29:17):
Coach, Love you guys, Thank you what you do.

Speaker 1 (29:20):
You got it, Thank you very much. We're going to
get to a break. Other side of the break, Matt
Hensler and Mike and Avak. We're gonna have two coaches
join us ten o'clock, Greg Brasgel from Lake Country Luther
and ten ten Matt Harris ten twenty, Rico Reigsdeal from
Milwaukee Academy. Sides going to join us. Man, oh man,
they are open in some eyes, aren't they.

Speaker 2 (29:40):
They're playing football, man, man football.

Speaker 1 (29:43):
We got a great show. And then at at ten forty.
We'll introduce you to our current electric superhero of the week,
young Man from Racine Park will be coming in studio
Busy show today. This is the Varsity Plitz High School
Sports Show presented by your local Pick and Safe Stores
on the Big nine twenty. Your iHeart Radio App. Welcome
back to the Varsity Blitz High School Sports Show presented

(30:04):
by your local Pick and Safe Stores on the Big
ninet twenty and your iHeartRadio App. Coming from the Donovan
to Jordans and Heidi and Cooling Studios. Reaching out right
now to Matt Hensler from Lake Geneva, Badger Mike and
Navak from mcguanago for this next segment, and then we'll
talk to Greg Brascal from Lake Country Lutheran, Matt Harris
from Arrowhead, and Rico Reigsdell from Milwaukee Academy of Science.

(30:29):
So coach this week for these guys, right you get
through level two, getting ready for Level three. Much different
as far as what you're going to do as a
staff this week compared to last week, compared to week
one of the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
Uh No, I think the nice part about getting to
level three and then level four and then even the
state week. The state week gets a little goofy because
it feels like it's shorter because you got the extra
stuff that comes with qual fine for state. But three
and four I always felt as a head coach that
I kind of got time back where I had time
to really digest and think about and all your lower

(31:11):
levels are done, all of the typical like equipment collection
and some of the others. You just settle in. I
don't know what it is about it, You just kind
of settle in if you feel great and you really
enjoy the moment. Days go fast. But it's I think
it's a lot of fun. We can get to the
level three and four.

Speaker 1 (31:28):
We're now joined by the head football coach at Lake
Geneva Badger. We always talked to him this time of year,
mad It. We almost didn't talk to him this time year.
I'll tell you that we're seeing Horlic. Gave him all
they could handle. Coach Hensler, how you doing today?

Speaker 4 (31:43):
I'm okay surviving here.

Speaker 1 (31:46):
Man, we're seeing Horlic. Look, I know Brian Fletcher for
a long time. You got to give those boys a
lot of credit for how they played you guys last night.

Speaker 4 (31:56):
Yeah, they especially the first half. They played a lot
harder than us. And I give those guys a lot
of credit. They were ready to play, and I think
we were. We were a little sleep there a little while.
But they play hard, man, They play hard, and they
play physical.

Speaker 3 (32:12):
They had a good plan we were.

Speaker 4 (32:16):
We were fortunate to get out of there with the win.

Speaker 1 (32:18):
Hey, coach Fletcher's got two boys on it and his
older boy is I've seen him play man. He is
as tough as they come. He's as tough as his
older brother, which is, you know, as tough as missus.
Fletcher is the tough one of that family, by the way.
And uh he that kid can he offensively defensively, if

(32:39):
you move, he'll hit you. And I'm just always I'm
impressed with the kid like that. That's the leader on
both sides of the the the the line. And how
did he play against you guys last night?

Speaker 4 (32:52):
He played really well. Obviously, he's a tough kid man,
and he's a he's a throwback to the old day.
He never comes off the field, you know, he's on
kickoff and kick return and offense defense upond may like
literally doesn't come off the field. So you never ever
see that anymore. And He's an impressive dude man to

(33:16):
play as hard as he does and for as long
as he does and how many plays he does it
on if you're not playing against him, he's fun to watch.

Speaker 1 (33:27):
Yeah, yes he is, Hey coach. I had asked Ryan
before we got you on there, the difference between getting
ready for level three and getting ready for level two,
level one. You know, you've been through this now you
want to stay championship last year, different week when you
when it comes to gets to level three as far
as what you have your kids do during practice, or

(33:50):
is the template kind of the same when it comes
to level one and level two?

Speaker 4 (33:55):
You know, for us, it's it's pretty much the same template.
We we just try to shorten things, that's all. We
just try to save their legs. But you know, so
it's about ten or fifteen minutes a day, that's just
we try to cut out.

Speaker 3 (34:10):
We'll do a.

Speaker 4 (34:11):
Little bit more film stuff, and we'll do a little
bit more walk through and chalk talk and those things.
But we try to limit the time on the field
a little bit. But our kids and they need they
need their daily vitamins. So we never stopped doing the
fundamentals and we never stopped doing the basics, and yeah,

(34:33):
they need their Daisy vitamins.

Speaker 3 (34:35):
So we do we do.

Speaker 4 (34:35):
We try like crazy not to to switch that stuff up.

Speaker 1 (34:39):
Coach, How was the crowd last night? You know, I
would think the entire community came out to support you
guys and and feel pretty good about about how the
community is behind the team and and supporting you guys
to get another home game, which is awesome. Tell me
about that part of it.

Speaker 4 (35:00):
Yeah, I think in general, the the global perspective, the
support from our community is always has always been good,
but uh, it's been wrapped up the last couple of years,
and they you know, I have some theories why people
are kind of coming out now, but I think our
support around the community is awesome. Specifically last night, our

(35:25):
crowd was wild and there were three or four huge
fourth downs that that kind of decided the game, and
I think our crowd had a factor in that that.
We had a we had a false start, and we
had uh uh twice where they lined up off sides,
and I think and then obviously the two point conversion

(35:48):
at the end, I think our crowd had a huge
factor in that, and I think it was awesome.

Speaker 1 (35:53):
Well, how much time was left when with that two point.

Speaker 3 (35:56):
Conversion thirty five seconds.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
Coach, run us through the game real quick. Cliff notes,
like scoring wise, you talked about the first half not
being great for you. Something tells me that dude got
on the grass out there at Lake Geneva, badger. You
guys kicked it up a notch. But in the second half.
So walk us through that real quick. How'd the EBB
and flow go?

Speaker 4 (36:20):
Well, yeah, it flowed in it, ebbed. I'll tell you
that we uh, without getting too much into it. We
had a rough day at school yesterday and we started
we started out playing like it and we just weren't
quite ready for the speed and competitiveness at which they played.

Speaker 3 (36:45):
You know, which gets huge credit to those guys. They played.
They played like monsters right from the get going. You
have to.

Speaker 4 (36:53):
We we just went through it this morning. She ran
fourteen of the first eighteen plays offensively. We ran wrong,
which is not typical and not what you need to
do at level, well any level, to be honest with you,
So that helped they they went, They jumped out to
a fourteen nothing lead right away right off the bat.

(37:18):
We we fumbled with our one of our pitch back
went the wrong way and we pitched nobody and they
returned it down to their like three and to make
it fourteen. Nothing, kind of battled back, settled down defensively,
kind of battled back the end of the first quarter
and second quarter and made it fourteen fourteen at half.
They scored the very first drive with two great runs

(37:41):
by Fletcher Man. That kid's unbelievable. Two great runs, and
it was twenty one fourteen. We ended up tying it
at the end of the half, got like I said,
got a big fourth down stop. In the fourth quarter,
we went right down and scored to make it twenty
eight to twenty one. They had a really nice six
minute long drive, scored with about thirty five seconds left

(38:05):
and then went for two.

Speaker 1 (38:08):
Oh my goodness. Yeah, yeah, you sound tired. You sleep
great last night.

Speaker 4 (38:14):
Huh, I'm exhausted, matt.

Speaker 1 (38:17):
Hey, listen, we don't have time to break down Milton.
But you know they it's a team that that stumbled
at the end a couple of times. They lost the
Sun Prairie East lost to Wanta Key. But there they're
back rolling a little bit, and uh, it should be
a great Friday night at Lake you you have a
badger when you take on Milton this Friday.

Speaker 3 (38:37):
Yeah, we're excited.

Speaker 4 (38:38):
We're excited for you know, we've never had a Level
three home game, so that that's unbelievable. That's fantastic. Milton's good.
You know you mentioned them stumbling. It's some per eastern
wanaque and uh. The the list of teams that have
stumbled against those two teams is a long and historic
so there's no shame in that. Their heck of football team.

Speaker 1 (39:01):
Matt, thank you very much. I really appreciate the time
today and hopefully I'll be texting you in the morning
next Saturday to see if you can come on and
join Brian and I for a few minutes.

Speaker 4 (39:13):
I'd love that. That's a tradition like no other.

Speaker 3 (39:15):
Buddy, there it is.

Speaker 1 (39:16):
Yes, he is Matt Hesler. Good luck next week against Milton.
We are now joined by the head football coach at mcgwanago.
He is Mike and avac Hey coach. Congratulations, really good
win last night. Look, people are asking me if we're
seeing cases for real, and I think you'll agree with

(39:37):
me at this point. Yes, sir, they are for real
where the.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
Scene case is legit.

Speaker 7 (39:44):
They have talent and skill all over the field. Our
offensive line said it was their d lineman with the
hardest guys.

Speaker 3 (39:54):
To try to move.

Speaker 7 (39:56):
Yeah, they're very, very, very talented and they're very well coached.

Speaker 1 (40:02):
Yeah. We had Anton in studio with us a few
weeks ago. In fact, it was the day that the
brackets came out and he had a couple of players
with him. And when they got o'conawak coming to their place,
they were they were okay, they were confident, and I said,
guys Ocondomwak, you understand They said, no, we understand who
they are. We know who they are. We feel pretty

(40:24):
good about the draw. And I thought, boy, you know,
to be that young, and these were the players, and
I thought, they have no idea what's coming their way.
And they took care of their business and they were
not Look it's a group that might not know better,
but they were not intimidated. They said, okay, next to McGonagall,
let's go give them our best shot. And they did.

(40:46):
And I'm really happy the fact that you came away
from from that saying, man, Racine Cases is awfully good team.
You got to be so proud of the way mcguanae
will handle their business to get the level three code.
And look, I had asked Ryan and I talked to
Matt Henzeler. The template that you use for week three
and level three different than what you guys, how you

(41:10):
went about your business and level one, level two for
those weeks or the same time.

Speaker 7 (41:15):
Be honest, No, we we'll just keep doing what we do. Yeah,
I heard coach Hensler talk, you know, about his daily vitamins,
and we're pretty much the same way. We got to
make sure we're still you know, hitting our footworks, hitting
our double teams on defense, make sure we're still tackling.
We may cut out a period or two, but that

(41:39):
was what we attended to do that last week, and
we ended up going like thirty minutes longer.

Speaker 3 (41:46):
You know.

Speaker 1 (41:46):
That's kind of how it works with coaches. Right, we're
gonna let's let's get this done in this amount of time,
and you spend a little bit more time in this drill,
a little bit of extra time in that drill and
trying to get it all of it done. Coach, you
got get arrowhead coming up. And I read a quote
in the Journal Sentinel and you said, look, we're okay,

(42:07):
We're okay. With that, we were hoping to maybe get
another shot at them. The last time you guys played
was a Barnburner coach and I know down the stretch
and Ryan and I were talking about it. There are
some things that I'm not sure that everybody agreed with,
as far as some incidence within the game itself. Near
the down the end of the stretch, you guys lost

(42:29):
twenty nine to twenty eight, and Coach I ask a
question on a faith in the zone show. I do
all the uniforms you've ever put on, we put them
in a closet and you get to one, pull one
out to get one more game back. I got a
feeling if I asked you that that might be the game.
And now you get a chance to maybe replay it
a little bit. Feel pretty good about getting another shot

(42:51):
at Arrowhead.

Speaker 3 (42:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (42:52):
I think our kids do as well.

Speaker 4 (42:55):
You know, all things.

Speaker 7 (42:56):
Aside with with with how that game ended, we feel
that we didn't we didn't execute at the level we
needed too early in the game, and then defensively we
had literally we had two hiccups in that game which
resulted in fourteen points. So I know our kids are excited.

(43:19):
Our staff is excited and we get to be playing
at home. This is our sixth home game.

Speaker 3 (43:27):
In a role.

Speaker 7 (43:28):
I've never heard of such a thing. We start out
with four on the road and now we're finishing with
six at home, which is unheard of.

Speaker 2 (43:36):
Hey, coach, you know what appreciates that is Andy Trudell,
your a d. He really likes to keep him coming.

Speaker 1 (43:43):
Hey, sarcasm all the time? Are you beat a little sarcastic?

Speaker 2 (43:47):
What's that?

Speaker 1 (43:48):
Are you very for? Really are a little sarcasm?

Speaker 2 (43:52):
Hey, you gotta love it. You just he's bringing in
the revenue like crazy. Coach g keeps winning, Andy keeps
making dollars.

Speaker 1 (43:59):
Hey, I got to tell you this, if you want
to get to that game, I you got to get
there earlier. You got to get a ticket early because
there's going to be standing room only for sure. And
I got to believe if you want to get up
in the seats, I would get there about four o'clock.

Speaker 2 (44:16):
There might be some RVs that pull into this one
and camping out like the SEC Country just to watch
this one go down.

Speaker 1 (44:22):
I bet Coach. I I thank you for the time
that that you've given me for this show. And I
really appreciate it a lot. And and that game against Arrod.
I don't know if you're going to sleep real well
this week. I don't think any coaches that are coaching
at this time of year get much sleep. But I
got a feeling that that you guys are going to
have awful a lot of fun this week getting these

(44:44):
boys ready for that aeroid game. You don't have to
come up with any kind of raw Rod speech, do you.

Speaker 4 (44:50):
No, No, you really don't.

Speaker 3 (44:52):
Which you know.

Speaker 7 (44:54):
It's when you get to a level three game against
you know, your one of your your biggest rivals, it's
it's gonna be awesome. Well we'll go all in, throw
all our chips on the table, and and it's gonna
be a good one. And who knows, maybe it comes
down to another two point conversion like the last three
or four of them have.

Speaker 1 (45:12):
Hey, right, if you weren't going to need it, this
is the game you'd be at, right.

Speaker 2 (45:16):
Oh, absolutely, this is Yeah, this is gonna be a
great one. And the pageantry of both schools on both sides,
and the energy and the passion that the fan base
the students will bring and coach is going to have
his student sex in the end zone and and the
smokers are going to be going and all the little stuff.
It's just it's it's a unique place to watch some football.

(45:38):
When those two schools get together. There's a long, long
history and you got to appreciate the history and those
great coaches that have come before, these great coaches and
and kids and players. So there's you just it's a
great thing about high school football right there.

Speaker 1 (45:51):
Hey, coach, really quickly. I was at Prairie View yesterday.
My daughter in law teaches there, and they had like
an interest day and they brought in people to talk
about what they do for a living, and I had
three different sessions and talking about being on the radio
and doing some TV stuff. In to showcase the TV
work I do, I showed part of the interview with

(46:13):
you and I for Friday Night Rivals, and a bunch
of these kids were like, Hey, that's our friend's dad. Hey,
that's the head coach at mcguanaga. I said, yeah, that's
why I'm air this. All of those kids were I said,
who's going to the game tonight? They all raise their hand,
all of them. So the community is so behind your
team and your program, Coach, The excitement for that game

(46:35):
last night with these fifth and sixth graders was incredible
that it just made me smile.

Speaker 7 (46:42):
Yeah, it's we're really fortunate. We're really blessed to be
in mcgonago, and you know we don't take it for granted.

Speaker 1 (46:49):
Hey, coach, is there going to be a pass list
that you can put names on that? Because I might
be calling you on that one because I think this
is the game. I got to get to you next Friday.

Speaker 7 (46:58):
Hey, Mike, you just shoot me at Tech so I'll
get you in.

Speaker 1 (47:01):
That's awesome.

Speaker 8 (47:02):
I will.

Speaker 1 (47:03):
I'll make sure I wear the correct colors for this one. Coach,
you got it man, Hey, coach, thank you for your time.
He is Mike and Avok the head football coach home
against Arrowhead and I can look I don't have a
dog in the fight and out nervous to that one.

Speaker 2 (47:20):
Yeah, it's gonna be a great football and you heard
coach allude to it. It's gonna come down to a
two point conversion of the final player the last kick.
And they really have He's not lying. The last three
four years, it's been every game they played, and they've
had rematches in the playoffs too, So they played twice
a year for you know, three out of last four
years something like that. So it will be a great

(47:40):
game to watch.

Speaker 1 (47:41):
By the way, for all you guys throughout the last
few weeks that have been telling me to stop saying
that this conference is the best conference in the state.
It's down this year. It's not as good as it
has been. Okay, really, Musquigo's still playing Mcgwuanago's still playing,
Arrowhead still playing. Yeah, it's fine, the conference is fine.

Speaker 2 (48:06):
The unfortunate part about that statement is now they got
to start eliminating themselves. Correct, It's too bad. You couldn't
really get spread out and see what happens. But that's
not what the state playoffs are about, is It's not
the conference playoffs, it's the state playoffs. So team's got
to take care of the business.

Speaker 1 (48:21):
The gout to take care of the business. We're going
to get to a break. The other side of the break,
Greg Bradsgal from Lake Country, Luther's gonna join us, Matt
Harris from Arrowhead, and then Rico Ragsdale, the head coach
at Milwaukee Academy of Science, Before we introduce you to
this week's current electric Superhero of the Week, This is
the Varsity Blitz High School Sports Show, presented by your

(48:43):
local Pick and Safe stores down the Big nine. Twenty
in year, I heard radio app Welcome back to the
Varsity Blitz High School Sports Show, always presented by your
local Pick and Safe Stores. Coming from the Diving and
Jorgensen Heating and Cooling Studios, I'm Mike McGivern alongside the
Appleack director at Mesquie, Ryan McMillan. How old is your
daughter playing hockey in Hudson?

Speaker 2 (49:05):
How old is she? She's twelve now thirteen.

Speaker 1 (49:08):
That's a long trip to go play hockey.

Speaker 2 (49:11):
Yeah. They left yesterday right after school, five hours up there.
Laced them up last night at eight thirty. They do
They won five two.

Speaker 1 (49:19):
Okay, so scored.

Speaker 2 (49:21):
She did not score. But what my wife told me
was her line was plus three. So what that means
is when you're on the ice, you know your team
scoring versus giving up goals.

Speaker 1 (49:29):
And how long we're right?

Speaker 8 (49:30):
Is that?

Speaker 1 (49:31):
Five?

Speaker 3 (49:32):
Five?

Speaker 2 (49:33):
Well?

Speaker 1 (49:33):
Lake Country Lutheran's got a long bus fry coming.

Speaker 2 (49:35):
To They got about three bought three.

Speaker 1 (49:37):
They're heading to Stratford, number one seat in their bracket.
Strafford beat Amherston. Lake Country Lutheran shut out Winnepego Lutheran
last night, thirty five nothing. We are now joined by
the head football coach at Lake Country Lutheran. He's Greg Brascal. Hey,
coach good Win last night?

Speaker 3 (49:55):
Thank you? Yeah felt good man?

Speaker 1 (49:57):
Hey. Were you as surprise as I was when Winnebago
Lutheran beat Saint Mary Springs.

Speaker 9 (50:05):
Yeah, I mean no more surprise than the rest of
the stay. My New Springs was missing. They were going
to be missing their number one player, so that could
potentially skew the score a little bit, but not not
a thirty point differential. That was that was interesting to
watch you.

Speaker 1 (50:20):
Yeah, it really was. I look, I've said this and
I don't know if I'm right, but and you can
correct me if I'm not. I think that that win,
that that Winnebago Lutheran had a week after getting blown
out by Saint By by Final laz Saint Mary Springs
they I think that that was their super Bowl. And
I as a coach, I have been in that position

(50:42):
before where our kids are are so jacked up after
a win. To get them back focused, you know, to
play another game in seven days, sometimes it was difficult.
Do you think that that that played in in how
that game ended last night.

Speaker 9 (50:58):
I mean, if it's the case, I've never seen anyone
play back to back Super Bowls, But yeah, you're right,
it's I mean, they took a team picture in front
of the scoreboard after the game and everything. So it
was a big win for them, and I'm not going
to take that away from them. I hope Coach goes
back and really enjoys that moment because that was a
huge moment for WLA. Moving forward with that victory over Springs,

(51:21):
did it play into last night? I mean I hope not.
Like when it comes to these kids playing playoff games,
I'm sure that they wanted to keep it going. And
that's what I was worried about, Like where they going
to have a fallback and just say, hey, look at
what we did last week, or were they going to
be like a team of destiny and come after us?
So we try to set a tone early.

Speaker 1 (51:39):
That's a really good point, Hey, Coach. From Friday September thirteenth,
you guys dropped one to Racine Saint Catherines. At that
point of the year, you guys were one in three,
and I'm wondering from that point on you guys have
have been cleaned, right, You guys have not lost and
you've beaten some pretty good teams throughout that. Was there?

(52:01):
What change do you think was it was? Was? Was
there some difference as far as what happened the first
couple of weeks to what's happened since?

Speaker 9 (52:11):
Yeah, I mean I wish I could tell you there
was some medic formula. But when it comes down to it,
our non conference is always super tough and then playing
saying Kate's that early in our conference schedule, I mean,
we knew they were going to be the team that
they are. We knew they were going to be so good.
So we knew that within our first four games we
were going to play our three toughest opponents. And it

(52:31):
wasn't really going to be like are we going to
win or lose? But how are we going to handle
that moment?

Speaker 3 (52:35):
And our kids?

Speaker 9 (52:36):
Our kids handled being one and three really well in
a sense that you know what's next, not what happened.
It wasn't a woe with me, watch what we'll do
now type of mentality.

Speaker 1 (52:45):
So hey, Ryan on when when I did the the
show with with with Coach for for Friday Night rivals,
and we were talking. He made a comment that has
stuck with me, and he said, you know, if you
don't learn something from losing the game, you're just a loser.

Speaker 2 (53:04):
Got to lose before you win. In my opinion, you
have to lose before you're gonna win.

Speaker 1 (53:08):
And the amount of things that I that that him
and his staff learned from from losing to a really
good Saint Mary Springs team, a Lakeside Lutheran team that
I saw closer personal and they were good, and it
received Saint Catherine's team. You know, this is the kind
of guy, the kind of staff that learned from those things,
and he certainly has done that. Go ahead.

Speaker 8 (53:29):
Well.

Speaker 2 (53:29):
The cool piece about that too, is coach chose to
play these teams like a lot of people like to
skirt the competition in your non conferences, and coach chose
going either we're gonna have a really awesome victory and
then learn from it, or we might have a tough
defeat and then we're gonna learn from it, but it's
gonna serve us better later in the season when we
get the playoff time. And now look at here they
sit in Level three and they're in the final eight.

Speaker 1 (53:51):
Yeah, I love that and coach it when when we
were out there on Friday night rivals and again, you guys,
Lakeside Lutheran played really well. You guys took one on
the chin a little bit. I can tell you what
we the people at my twenty four still talk about
how well we were received, and people coming up to
us from the from the stands just saying thank you

(54:12):
so much for coming out and and showing Lakeside Lutherans,
showing Lake Country Lutheran. It's showing schools our size, and
it just was a great environment. And I thank you,
and I think the staff at Lakeside Lutheran for you know,
and and Lake Country Lutheran excuse me for how well
they treated us why we were there, But.

Speaker 9 (54:33):
It is really important when we when we get those
moments of recognition. I mean, we're right in the epicenter
of Oconomwalk, Arrowhead, Ketlmarine, p Waukee, Cathock Memorial, mcgwan, like
mesquite like everyone I haven't mentioned who's like within earshot
of any of these kids heading to any of those schools,
and they chose our school for a reason. We think

(54:53):
we're markedly different. And so when when media does pay
attention to us little guys. We we definitely want to
make sure that they're appreciated.

Speaker 2 (55:03):
Hey, coach, looking forward to your Level three game. We
might kind of mention it as introing you coming in
on the segment, But you're looking at probably a three
hour bus ride up to Stratford in central Wisconsin. How
are you guys gonna go about handling that or have
you started to think about that piece? Because that doesn't

(55:23):
always happen in high school sports.

Speaker 9 (55:26):
Right, I mean, that's that's kind of the downside of
the non conference schedule that we play, because I mean,
we could be sitting at eight and one and maybe
we end up in a situation where we're a one
or a two, and maybe Stratford is not even in
our bracket. I'm not going to get into house WA
does things, but I can't imagine a circle that has
Stratford and Us in the same quadrant. But whatever it is,

(55:48):
what it is. But our plan is too. Yeah, We're
gonna probably get out of school early, head up there,
try to get there by five o'clock so that we
can loosen up our legs and be ready to take
the field at six. Just like it's any other game.
I'm more concerned about, you know, after the game and
getting home at two am. But I hope I'm home

(56:08):
with a smile on my face. I don't think I'll
be that concerned.

Speaker 1 (56:11):
Well, they've got you know, Milwaukee Academy of Science. Good
going to Perduchine. So and you guys, yah, they got
to do it twice.

Speaker 9 (56:19):
What's that because they just went they just went to
Darlington and now they got to go to.

Speaker 1 (56:23):
Prairie right, and we're gonna have Rico they're head coach
on near the end of the actually around ten twenty today,
and you know, traveling to Prayer Duchine and you guys
traveling to Stratford. I don't I am I no longer
just question that. I just shake my head at stuff.
I don't get any of this stuff. So I don't

(56:43):
know how you can in a level three game having
to go to Stratford. But you know, these kids will,
we'll get out of school a little early and they
they won't mind that too much. If you need to
take a couple of a cross country boys with you,
take my grandson. He doesn't mind getting out of school early.
I can tell you that, Hey, Thank you so much.
I appreciate this a lot. And good luck next week

(57:04):
against Stratford.

Speaker 9 (57:05):
Thanks Mike, thanks for having us on.

Speaker 1 (57:07):
You got it Lake Country Luthor. Boy. He does a
great job out there. Yeah, they are every single year.
They We're talking to him this time of year, and
they start out one in three or one in two
and people think, Okay, you know what, this isn't the
year for them, and then they figure it out and
they start playing well. And he said, look, we play

(57:28):
two tough teams in non conference because we feel pretty
confident in our conference we're gonna be able to take
get enough wins to get into the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (57:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (57:36):
And they've been state championship. Good they've they've made that run.
They know what it's all about, and so you know,
they aren't undefeated like they've been in recent history, and
so people kind of turn the page on them. But
they're they're growing a young group of kids, and the
kids are learning and coaches continuing to coach, and that's
why they found themselves in level three.

Speaker 1 (57:55):
Yeah, one hundred percent. Hey, our next guest, and I
don't think he slept very well last night either. We'll
we'll find out the head football coach at Arrowhead. He
is Matt Harris, coach. How are you today?

Speaker 3 (58:10):
Good?

Speaker 6 (58:10):
Good?

Speaker 1 (58:10):
How are you good? Coach? You know, whenever, whenever the
kid from the Jets gets a sack, I tell my wife,
that's the only kid that ever fell asleep on the
couch in the studio. You got to be so proud.
Did he get injured the other night?

Speaker 8 (58:27):
Yeah, yeah, he just clipped his heel, like just above
his ankle. He was fine though, he came back.

Speaker 1 (58:34):
Okay, good. I didn't see him back. And you got
to be so proud of that kid. You got to
be proud of this team, coach, to go beat a
team like Verona. There are people in my circles that
thought Verona might be the best team in Division one.
That's what they're telling me. And these are guys up
in that area. They're saying, look, this might be the
best team in the state. And you guys went out

(58:55):
and beat him twenty to twenty one. Can you talk
a little bit about that win.

Speaker 8 (58:58):
Coach, Yeah, I mean, hands down, they were the best
defense that we've seen all year long. They were spectacular defensively,
just so fast, with incredible athletes and coached really well.
They they were really really good, So I can see
why people up there believe that. But our kids just

(59:21):
they refuse to lose and they fight till the end.
And that's just kind of been the mantra of our group,
not only this year but since I've been there.

Speaker 1 (59:32):
Coach, when when you get a chance to play a
team now like mcgwanaga and you get to travel over
to see them, And we had Coach gavak on a
little bit earlier and he said, look, this is you know,
every time we play these guys, it is a battle
till the end, and it you know, he said, look,
we were hoping to maybe get a chance to play

(59:54):
them again because we're familiar with them. I don't have
to do any kind of big rob Ross speech for
my boys because they understand the importance of playing a
team like Arrowhead and there's not a lot of love
there right between our players and their players, and this
could be a true battle at this level. You don't
have to do any kind of raw ross speech at

(01:00:15):
Arrowhead to get up for a Iguanago game either.

Speaker 8 (01:00:19):
No, absolutely not. It's you know, like like he said,
it's never ending, like it just is a constant battle.
Our kids know, like they're already prepared for this week
of practice. I mean this, I believe this is like
the sixth time we've played them in the last three years.
So it's you know, it's nothing unfamiliar for us. But

(01:00:41):
you know, we just take things one day at a time.
I know that's cliche, but like that, that's how our
kids have been doing it this year, and that has
helped us. You know, that has helped us. I think again,
we enjoyed last night, and you know, the kids are
just Okay, what's the next step? What's the next step?
Because in the past, I feel like we've looked forward
to things and and and that kind.

Speaker 3 (01:01:03):
Of bit us and.

Speaker 8 (01:01:04):
And now our kids learned lessons from that, and me
and our coaches too, we've learned lessons from those things
that didn't go our way. And and now.

Speaker 3 (01:01:12):
That's that's what we're doing.

Speaker 8 (01:01:13):
And but yeah, we know it's probably gonna come down
to the last play of the game, but we're used
to that. I think that's the one thing about last night,
Like you know, Verona being where they're at. Their games
aren't always the closest. I mean, they're really really good,
and when you play teams like mcguanago and Muskeigo and
all these teams. Every week. We're in these battles every week.

(01:01:35):
We were so battle tested last night that you know,
I really didn't flinch. Our kids didn't flinch, you know,
and I think they made a few mistakes in the
end there because their kids have never felt that the
pressure of of last second games like that, and and
our kids, it's just kind of old hat for us.

Speaker 3 (01:01:52):
Now.

Speaker 1 (01:01:53):
Coach, we advance Holton and some of your guys in
studio a few weeks ago. I was really impressed with him.
He's very compet he he is the leader. When when
I said, hey, who should I talk to first, they
all pointed to him, like he's the guy. Talk to
him first. He's our quarterback and he's the guy that
makes us go. And when we talked during the break, mentally,

(01:02:15):
that kid is so locked in, its so mentally tough that
it doesn't surprise me when you said, look he was
you know that's we just rolled with it because we've
been in those games a lot, and he's a kid
that you feel pretty comfortable with him under center.

Speaker 8 (01:02:32):
Yeah, I mean he's just a warrior, you know, he
just you know again, like it's probably why we're our
team is that way is because you know, you become
a direct reflection of your leaders. And you know, and
when when he's in control like he is at times,
like he's just the kids just follow him and you know,

(01:02:53):
we get the third and short or fourth and short,
like our kids don't even question it. They know he's
gonna he's gonna get it done for us. And he
always has. And I think we're seven to seven on
third down with him last night, and you know, and
it's you give your whole team the confidence. He gives
the team the confidence and that's very very comforting as

(01:03:14):
a coach.

Speaker 1 (01:03:15):
Hey, Matt, thank you so much. I Uh, I've already
told a nave Bok he's got to put my name
on a list because if I'm going to get to
a game on Friday, that's gonna be the game I'm
gonna go to. And as McMillan said, there's gonna be
our vs. You know, parked in a lot about two
o'clock on Friday, getting ready for that one.

Speaker 8 (01:03:34):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, congrats simiskiego too. That was awesome that
they took care of business. I'm really happy for the
Classic eight. Like, we had our meeting on Monday, and
it's just you know, obviously we compete with each other,
but we're really excited for each other to show how
how to lead our conference is.

Speaker 2 (01:03:52):
And so congrats to them as well, thanks coach. Yeah,
and building on what you just said, the unfortunate part
is now we've got to eliminate and someone's got to
in at each other, right, and so best of luck
to you guys.

Speaker 3 (01:04:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:04:04):
If I was hey, if I was in town, he'd
be standing next to me on the sidelines for this one.

Speaker 8 (01:04:11):
Ah yeah, yeah, No, he'll be busy. He'll be busy
on a different side.

Speaker 1 (01:04:15):
He'll be texting me what what's the score? Hey? Coach?
Thank you very much. Matt Harris. You've always been so
kind with your time for this show. I really appreciate it.

Speaker 8 (01:04:25):
And good to hear from me. And we'll talk to
you hopefully next week.

Speaker 1 (01:04:28):
You got it. That's Matt Harris, the head football coach
at AARHUD. We're gonna get to a break. Other side
of the break, We're gonna we won't introduce you to
our colect super early week. That's the last segment. Can
you stick around for ten more minutes before you head out. Yeah,
maybe we'll see Yeah, because I wanted I want you
to be around for Ragsdale, that head coach at Milwaukee
Cabby Sides. Even if it's just the first couple of minutes,

(01:04:50):
we're gonna get to a break and we will talk
to Rico Ragsdale, Milwaukee Cabbin Side's still playing football, guys,
and they're they're doing it. They're traveling. They got a
lot another trip and we'll talk to him about that.
This is the Varsity Blitz High School Sports Show presented
by your local Pick and Saved Stores. I'm the Big
nine twenty year iHeart Radio App. Welcome back to the

(01:05:11):
Varsity Blitz High School Sports Show presented by your local
Pick and Safe Stores on the Big nine twenty in
your iHeart Radio app. Coming live from the Donovan and
Jorgensen Heating and Cooling Studios. Had to had to kick
out my co host, the athletic director at Musquito High School.
He's got to get on the road. And Ryan McMillan,

(01:05:34):
thank you so much for coming in for most of
the show man. He brings a whole different mindset to
this stuff and I love when he's in studio for sure.
We're trying to reach out to the head football coach,
Rico Reigsdale from Milwaukee Academy of Science. They won last
night thirty six thirty five at Darlington and they are

(01:06:00):
playing some of the boys now. They are playing some
tough competition and for them to continue to win and
continue to play, it's pretty incredible to me. And we're
gonna try to get a hold of Rico. They beat
Nu Glaris in Level one and now they just beat
Darlington in Level two, which is pretty amazing for me.

(01:06:24):
This is a football team that has not gotten this
deep into the playoffs, I don't think ever. And now
they've got to travel up and take on the number
one seed pro Dushine coming up pre Dushene who beat
Brookfield Academy fifty six. Nothing so Mas, they know what's
going on. I can tell you they're gonna have their

(01:06:45):
hands full with the number one seed pro Duschine, and
they got to feel awfully good about the way they're
playing right now. We're now joined by the head football
coach at Milwaukee Academy of Science. He is Rico Ragsdell
Hey co which congratulations you gotta be a little tired today.
It was a long drive home.

Speaker 3 (01:07:04):
Oh yeah, I appreciate it, but it was worth It's
worth the tiredness.

Speaker 1 (01:07:09):
Yeah, I bet that at least the first hour of
that that ride home must have been pretty pretty loud
and happy, and then most of the kids probably fell asleep.

Speaker 3 (01:07:18):
I would think, Oh yeah, yeah, the boys are pretty
amped up when we got into the locker room and
got on the bus and we ate a little bit.
But yeah, halfway through the energy wore off and they
got some risks.

Speaker 1 (01:07:30):
Hey, coach, can you tell me talk to me a
little bit about that game? You guys beat Darlington at
Darlington thirty six thirty five. Was it a score at
the end of the game to win it?

Speaker 3 (01:07:43):
No, Well, so we went up twenty nine thirty six
with about four minutes left in the game. They they
had a great drive. They drove the ball about seventy
five yards. They got into the end zone one minute
and fourteen seconds left, and instead of kicking the field

(01:08:04):
goal to tie it up at thirty six, they go
for two. They try to hit us with a pop pass,
something that we we kept harping on all week, and
you know, on our seniors, Cameron Williams was ready for
He batted the ball down and that was all she wrote.

Speaker 1 (01:08:23):
Man, I'm telling you, coach, I don't think it's school
history that football team from from Milwaukee Cabys Science has
ever gone for sure, this deepend of the playoffs, correct.

Speaker 3 (01:08:36):
Yeah, this is our first. This season is our first
year winning playoffs games. We've we've been to the playoffs,
but we lost in the first round to the eventual
state champion. And back to back years, Matt Hopefully.

Speaker 1 (01:08:50):
Coach, when you were in studio with a couple of
your players in the principal from Milwaukee Cabias Science in
the beginning of of us talking high school football, you know,
we talked about you guys having your own practice facility
now and you told me, Man, it's making a world
of difference for us, and I love the fact that

(01:09:10):
that that has helped this program. And then starting to
win as many games as you have and getting this
deep in the playoffs can only help get more kids
interested in playing football at Milwaukee Academy of Science. You
told me that day during their first break, you kind
of had that look and you smiled and you said, hey,
look you're gonna be talking to us again at the

(01:09:32):
end of the year and maybe into the playoffs. We
got a chance to put our stamp on this school,
in this program, with this team, and if we can
keep these kids playing for each other and stand, you know,
healthy and staying within the program, I think we have
a chance to make some noise and coach for a
team in a school who's never made this kind of noise.

(01:09:54):
For you to have that kind of confidence in your
staff and these players, I love it because you were correct.
We're talking to you late into the football season.

Speaker 3 (01:10:06):
Yeah, and it's just it's a testament to the hard
work that we put in over the over the last
four years. We really were really grinded. We knew with
that in our world class, which is our seniors now
at twenty twenty five class, we knew if we banded
together and we kept building stacking, you know, stacking wins
on wins, experiences on top of experiences, we would be

(01:10:30):
where we are today. And you know, hopefully we can
keep the momentum going until next week Friday.

Speaker 1 (01:10:36):
You know, coach, through the season, I'm watching your scores
and there are some games on teams that you played
that it didn't surprise me. The scores were about where
I thought they would be. And then you went out
and played what I think might be the one of
the better teams not only in our area but in
the state, and you play that Grafton and that score

(01:10:58):
was really close, and it made me take notice. Coach.
I thought, holy Kyle, you know I've seen Grafton up
close and personal, and I thought they were one of
the better teams I've seen in person this year. And
for you guys to hang with them showed me a lot.
And then to go to play New Glaris and to

(01:11:18):
beat a Darlington team, I got to tell you, Coach,
a lot of people in my circles have asked me
about your team and I haven't seen them play this year,
but spending time with you guys in studio, I said, look,
this is an impressive group of people and a really
good coaching staff. Did your player surprise you at all
when you play that Grafton and came as close as

(01:11:40):
you did to a team like that.

Speaker 3 (01:11:43):
Well, we took the game for the very purpose of
having a test. Coach. Norris over at graft and has
a heck of a ball club. They can beat you
on a multitude of different ways, and we wanted to
play in a game where our boys had to get
they a team were gonna was going to punch them back. Yes,
we went. I think we had like four fifty point

(01:12:06):
wins in a row, and I was like, all right, like, yeah,
we're feeling good, but now let's we got to get
prepared for the playoffs. So when Grafton had an opening,
Coach Norris, you know, gave us the greenlight that we
can play and that that game is one of the
biggest reasons we are where we are today because of
the fight that we had to be a part of

(01:12:29):
in that In that battle, you know, we played a
team that fought, that punched us back. We went down
at half by a couple of scores. We came out
in the second half and we you know, we blanketed
them and we put a few, you know on the board.
You know, maybe if it was a couple more minutes left,
it could have been a different outcome, but it gave
us the test that we needed. So Coach definitely appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (01:12:53):
You have no idea how impressed I am with what
you just said. You know, there are some guys, some
coaches that would go, look, I want to keep this
undefeated season going. And then there's you who said, look,
we're gonna get a bye, we're gonna get a buy
against Living Word Lutheran and Grafton has an opening. And

(01:13:13):
I don't think anybody in your staff, but maybe there
are some people in the school going I don't know
if I would do that. Don't you want to be
undefeated and you're saying, no, I want our kids to
get punched. I want them to understand what it's going
to be like to play a quality, really physically tough
opponent that we're gonna have to find different ways than

(01:13:33):
putting fifty up and beaten somebody by fifty. And I
have a lot of respect for what you just said
with that, Rico, and I think that's Look, you're a
young guy. That's that's coaches that are old like me
saying stuff like that. So I say, well done with that.

Speaker 3 (01:13:50):
I appreciate you. It's just that we have a main goal,
and the main goals to try to go and win
at the highest level. And you know, going undefeated is
going underseat it, but actually getting into a war and
fighting through adversity. That's how you actually achieve that goal.
So that's what that's what we're all about.

Speaker 1 (01:14:07):
Hey, talking about a team that's putting up a lot
of points that you're you know, you got a long
drive again. You got to go up to the number
one seed Perduceine.

Speaker 3 (01:14:16):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:14:17):
They they beat Brookfield Academy fifty six nothing. The week
before I think they won forty eight nothing. So this
is a team that's putting up a lot of points,
not giving up a lot of points. Have you had
a chance to take a look at them on tape yet?
And if you haven't, I understand because you probably got
home at two in the morning.

Speaker 3 (01:14:37):
Yeah. So we I've been paying attentions to them throughout
the year. So so we that's a team that we
kind of figured we were running to at some point.
They are. They are very very solid team with a
heck of a ballplayer. That number nine kid. They got Blake.
He is he's missed to do it all and he's

(01:14:58):
gonna he's gonna give us a true test, you know.
So we we're definitely gonna have the game plan and
prepare because he's a he's a he's a domin dominant
player on both sides of the ball offensively and defensively.

Speaker 1 (01:15:12):
So yeah, they won. They won the U s C
w C Conference. Uh Platfel took second, but they went
undefeated in that conference. And and looking at their their
game schedule, they lost their first game to a quite
US and you know, they've been putting up some some
some some numbers. And I think defensively, you guys are

(01:15:32):
gonna have to lock lockdown a little bit. Coaching and
and playing against Grafton, I think is going to give
you a pretty good idea on what they're going to
bring to you.

Speaker 3 (01:15:42):
Oh yeah, yeah, plan plan planing Grafting again, and that
running back Tommy Lets Grafton has gave us a true
look at how it's going to be to play. Uh
Blake Pierry from from Prairie. He's he's just as big,
just as physical, fast, true dominant football player. Let me,

(01:16:02):
he's a Division one kid for a reason. So you know,
we're trying, We're gonna try to prepare the best we
can and hopefully, you know, things things fall in our favor.

Speaker 1 (01:16:13):
Yeah, looking at his stats, averaging eleven point three per
Carrie scored twenty five touchdowns on the ground. He's gotten
thirteen touchdowns through the air. You're right, coach, A couple
of your boys are going to have to know him
personally by the end of this game.

Speaker 3 (01:16:32):
Oh yeah, we got We gotta become best friends with
him by the end of it.

Speaker 1 (01:16:35):
Again, Hey, Rico, thank you so much for your time.
I really appreciate it. I love the fact that we're
talking in Milwaukee Academy as signs football, you know, in
in November, coach, And look, come basketball season, I know
I'll be talking. You know, if Agape would ever call
me back, I would be talking basketball with him late

(01:16:56):
in the year, because basketball is at Milwaukee Academy is science.
If people think of it athletically, to think of it
as a basketball school starting, you're starting to change some
minds on that it can be a basketball and a
football school, right coach.

Speaker 3 (01:17:11):
Oh yeah, that's the go. We're a real program. We
are all around basketball football track man.

Speaker 1 (01:17:16):
That sawesome, Rico, Ragsdell. Good luck next week, coach. If
you guys get a win, I'll probably be texting the
early next Saturday as well.

Speaker 3 (01:17:25):
Okay, sounds good. I appreciate you.

Speaker 1 (01:17:26):
You got it. You bet we're gonna get to a
break other side of the break. Our current Electric Superhero
of the Week. I've known his dad for a long time,
and this young man, he's doing a lot of great
things in the classroom, in the school and in our community.
Will introduce you to Camp Beck there from Racine Park
High School. This is the Varsity Plitz High School Sports

(01:17:50):
Show presented by your local Pick and Safe Stores out
of the Big nine twenty and your iHeartRadio App. Welcome
back to the Varsity Plitz High School Sports Show presented
by your local Pick and Safe Stores on the Big
nineteen twenty and your iHeartRadio App. Coming from the Donovan
and Jorgensen Heating and Cooling Studios. Man, this show has
gone by. It feels like five minutes for me. Sometimes

(01:18:12):
he shows you know it's two hours ago. They go little,
they drag a little bit. This one. Man. I want
to thank Bill Jacklin. I want to thank Matt Hensler
and Mike and Navak. I certainly want to thank Matt
Harrison and Coach Brasgell from Lake Country Lutheran and Rico
for Milwaukee Academy of Science. And we push back. We
normally do our Ceronel Electric Superhero the Week at ten o'clock,

(01:18:34):
but I knew Ryan McMillan had to get on the road.
And again I want to thank Ryan for coming in
for as long as he did as the athletic director
of Musquigo. He is busy place. He's got girls playing
hockey and all over the place, and I love when
he has time to sit with me in studio and
talk high school football, our Curnel Electric superhero of the week.

(01:18:55):
It's funny. I mister O'Malley over at Racine parkhist. I
called him and said, Hey, so we're doing the Cernel Electric.
He goes, I got him, and I go, hold on
a second, let me finish my spiel. He goes, no, no,
I know exactly what you need. And I go, yeah,
what do I need? He said, you need a senior
that does great work in the classroom, very active in

(01:19:16):
the school, servant leadership hart and who are we going
to miss the most when they graduate? And I go yeah,
and he goes, he's a great kid. And I think
you might know his dad, and I do know his dad.
In fact, for a couple of basketball coaches, we could
talk about the flex, we could talk about mannor zone.
For the entire forty or twenty minutes we have left.

(01:19:37):
We're not going to do that. His son, Camp Bector,
is a senior at Racine Park High School. Big time student,
big time athlete, all the things that we look for
as our Colonel Electric Superhero week Cam. How you doing good?
How are you doing? I'm doing good. You know your
dad's really proud of you too. We talked for a
long time and he said he gets a lot of

(01:19:58):
these traits from his mom for me, So I love that. Hey,
let's talk. What's your your great point average?

Speaker 10 (01:20:05):
I have a four point unweighted GPA.

Speaker 1 (01:20:09):
So man him coach, He's like, we're twins.

Speaker 3 (01:20:13):
Yeah there you go.

Speaker 11 (01:20:13):
Oh yeah, well we're gonna give my credit there. We'll
give my credit on this one.

Speaker 3 (01:20:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:20:17):
But on the court, on the field, he gets a
little that from his dad.

Speaker 11 (01:20:21):
It's all that's all dad, because my boys shoot like
their dad. My girls shoot like their miles. So my
boys are better shooters there.

Speaker 10 (01:20:29):
Oh really, what did you average in the court last year?
I think like four or five around there. I didn't
play that much.

Speaker 1 (01:20:36):
You didn't. You got to get some time this year?

Speaker 3 (01:20:38):
Yeah?

Speaker 10 (01:20:39):
How good was the team last year? We were one
game away from state. So we were pretty darn good.

Speaker 11 (01:20:44):
Yeah we dropped one Kayan Kneppo, so well, if you
gotta drop point, we were down a bucket a half time.
So it was a great first half and then they
got hot and with a great atmosphere.

Speaker 1 (01:20:57):
Volleyball your sport. Yeah, that's my second swore. I would say,
two time captain on your volleyball program, played basketball, volleyball,
baseball for two years, golf for two years. You earned
ten varsity letters. So as as a student athlete, I
mean obviously you understand that student comes first. Yea, so

(01:21:19):
a four point unweighted what's your favorite subject? By the way,
I like history a lot. Do you know what you're
gonna do next year?

Speaker 10 (01:21:30):
I think I plan on going to lacrosse. Brother's up there,
my sister, Your sister's up there. She's gonna like watch
over you, or you might watch over her. You might
you might have to watch over her.

Speaker 1 (01:21:46):
What do you think you'll go to school for. I
think I want to study finance? Okay, you're okay in math? Yeah? Hey,
as as a Kerrent Electric Superhero of the week, one
of the biggest parts. And you can go to the
current Electric Facebook page. Look at this great picture of
this young man Firmercine Park and take a look at

(01:22:06):
all of the things that he is volunteered at, take
a look at some of the things that he's involved with.
Club Wise, National Honor Society, Decca Link Crew. He's ranked
number one right now in his class, and we're hoping
that he continues that because that would be pretty impressive
on the volunteer side. And we'll get into some of
the things that you do on the volunteer side. But

(01:22:29):
you're that servant leadership heart that you have. It's not
something you're born with. It's a learned behavior, and I'm
wondering where that came from.

Speaker 3 (01:22:39):
For you.

Speaker 10 (01:22:40):
Well, my parents always like praise, like give back to
your community because I get all the support from like
community teachers and stuff. So it's just it's just I
feel like I need to give back to the community, like.

Speaker 1 (01:22:52):
It's you know, it's interesting, first of all, Coach that
the fact that he talks that he thanks you and
your wife. You guys are both teachers. So it does
not surprise me because I have a daughter who's a teacher,
a son in law whose administration at Menominie Falls High School,
and a daughter who's a teacher in the middle school
at Maguanago. In fact, I was a guest speaker there yesterday.

Speaker 11 (01:23:14):
Yeah, it's so important. Then growing up as a coach,
I thought that was important for my team. So my
kids were raised giving that the Dan and raised Thanksgiving
feat since he's been little up into a young adult,
So that started when they were young. My wife is
a business and marketing teacher, so she does the Salvation
Army bell ringing with her kids and community, the tricking cans.

(01:23:36):
That's all stuff that gives back. So they were doing
it prior to even coming to high school.

Speaker 1 (01:23:41):
So Cam you learned that at an early age. One
of the things that I like when I talked to
our superheroes is most of them will say, listen, I
didn't know until I like through national inciety, you have
to do some of this, but you don't have to
do all this stuff you're doing. You do a lot
of this, and often people that sit where you're sitting

(01:24:04):
will say, look, I didn't know that I was going
to get more out of this than the people that
were trying to help.

Speaker 10 (01:24:10):
Do you have that feeling as well A little bit? Yeah,
because like people acknowledge it a lot too while you're
doing it, and you're also it's just you're giving back
and you're getting something from it, so it's like a
win win thing.

Speaker 1 (01:24:22):
Yeah, one hundred percent. Let's talk about some of the
things that you've been coups for kids bowling and baseball.
So Marcus has been on a show that another show
I do call Faith in the Zone. And I've never
seen anybody who has hands like Marcus Handel does, but
I'm very familiar with KU's for kids bowling and baseball.
What made you you get involved with that?

Speaker 10 (01:24:44):
Well, my dad teaches special eds, so he kind of
knew that.

Speaker 11 (01:24:50):
They had the programs out at Haven Park as well
as the bowling that he's gone to. Marcus and I
used to play. We grew up playing as our young
adult lives. That was years ago, probably one hundred pounds
ago for me. If we used to play cilly basketball
and volleyball together. Really, it's a great family that he's raised.
And you know, I've.

Speaker 1 (01:25:08):
Never seen with hands massive, his hands massive, like seven
baseballs he can put it in his hands. Is he
still doing that?

Speaker 3 (01:25:15):
Yep?

Speaker 1 (01:25:15):
Yeah. Would you do me a favor and if you
talk to him, give him my number because I'd love
to promote that for him. Oh yeah, I would love to.
And I used to have his phone number and I
changed phones and watched it. But I would love to
get in contact with him and be able to promote.
He used to raise money to buy coach for kids?

(01:25:36):
Is that the same thing.

Speaker 11 (01:25:37):
It all goes back to, you know, the special population,
kids with special needs, And yeah, it's just a great
like he does a great job with that. That goes
back to when he played with the Brewers or was
working with the Brewers. He's continued that legacy.

Speaker 1 (01:25:50):
When we had him on faith in his zone, he's
a first generation Christian who's on fire. He's getting up
on the mountaintop and he was so interesting to have
on faith in his zone. Talk to me a little
bit about the Dan and rays Rosine community Thanksgiving fees.
Been doing that since you were a kid.

Speaker 10 (01:26:06):
Yeah, So my dad he's always he's praising to everyone
to like give back to your community. So his basketball team,
so they every year we would go to the down
City town hall, Yeah, and Thenstle Hall and then we
would give we'd like go back and get the food
and then deliver it out to the people and like
help clean up and stuff like that.

Speaker 1 (01:26:26):
Hey, did you grow You grew up as a ball boy, right,
did you know when you were a kid that this
is where you want to go to school and this
is the uniform you wanted to put on? Yeah, you knew.

Speaker 3 (01:26:37):
I knew. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:26:39):
I asked this question at the end of Faith in
the Zone, and I wish I would have given you
a heads up, and so I apologize for this. But
all the uniforms you've ever put on, from little league
basketball to you know, golf and baseball and all of
that volleyball, if I put all those uniforms in the
closet and let you pick one uniform up to get

(01:27:00):
one more game with that team, do you know what
uniform you would pick?

Speaker 10 (01:27:07):
I would pick, honestly, last year's team from the sports
basketball team.

Speaker 1 (01:27:14):
Who would you play against? Would you want that? Wisconsin?

Speaker 10 (01:27:16):
I want to run it back against Wisconsin.

Speaker 3 (01:27:18):
Luther.

Speaker 1 (01:27:19):
I love that. So some people answer that question by saying, well,
I want this one because I had seven threes in
that game and I did great, but you guys lost. Yeah,
you know what, as a basketball coach when I was
at Dominican, we lost in sectional semi finals, Ousburg. We're
up six in overtime. I got beat. I've never even
watched the game, but I'd want that one back for sure.

(01:27:39):
When are you going to make your decision? Are you
applying at different schools right now?

Speaker 10 (01:27:44):
So there's a UW direct admit program, so I sign
up for that. So I'm directly admitted into any UW school,
not coming Lacrosse or Madison, and I like last weekend,
I just applied to Lacrosse.

Speaker 1 (01:27:56):
Yeah, what a beautiful campus.

Speaker 11 (01:27:58):
He would actually like to play college basketball. So we
have to see how the season goes. Role player last year,
you know, I think it. Coach will be expecting bigger
things from them. You talk about that game against kin Kineple.
He'll remember he came in and hit two threes right away,
you know, and it's.

Speaker 1 (01:28:12):
Kind of boy con who man. I love the coach
at Lacrosse, and I'm telling you I will if it's
okay with you, I'm going to send him this this
clip and and just say to him, hey, listen, you
want to get a kid who is a coach's son,
who is a four point zero in school that will

(01:28:33):
come and work every day and work his backside off
to be part of your program. I'm telling you it
would shock me if he doesn't call you someday next week,
because if it's okay with you, I'll pass among the
phone number. He's a great dude, and his mom is
even better. I you know he. I can just tell
you that he's he's going to turn that program to

(01:28:55):
what he wants. And I'm a huge fan of his.
Good luck. It's so good to meet you.

Speaker 11 (01:29:00):
Coach to see I said, I almost almost made me
want to come out of retirement.

Speaker 1 (01:29:04):
But the door will be all right again. Why don't
we do this, Why don't we make a commitment to
each other that I'll come down and we're seeing a
little early, We'll go grab a bite to eating and
go watch him point.

Speaker 3 (01:29:16):
It'll be awesome.

Speaker 1 (01:29:17):
Can you love that?

Speaker 8 (01:29:18):
Hey?

Speaker 1 (01:29:18):
Do you and your wife sit together during his games?

Speaker 4 (01:29:20):
You know what?

Speaker 11 (01:29:22):
There was an opening on the girl's staff, so I
kind of forced my wife to try to go help there.
I don't know what the girl and so I got
five So growing up I used to coach park and
then I did four of the five kids and Optimist
the City, growing up, Parking Wreck and the youngest is
a twin boy girl twin, and I coached the boy

(01:29:44):
didn't coach girls. So the girl looks at me like
I'm crazy when I'm yelling at her. I'm not sure
she wanted me on the staff.

Speaker 1 (01:29:50):
So I go to the boys games.

Speaker 11 (01:29:52):
Mine goes to the girls.

Speaker 1 (01:29:53):
I'll come sit with you there we go. Can you
hear him during the game?

Speaker 3 (01:29:56):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:29:56):
Oh, I bet you can't. You're gonna hear me too.
I'm just to mimic what he said way louder at
the girls game though. I'm gonna go camp, play some defense,
shoot the ball camp. Yeah, you're gonna love him and
I together, I can tell you and you know what happened.
We'll start at the top of the police and we'll
start moving down. Yeah, it's so good to meet you.

Speaker 3 (01:30:14):
Nice.

Speaker 1 (01:30:15):
Hey, what happens real quick again? Go to the current
Electric Facebook page. At the end of the year, they
picked their foundation picks one for a five thousand dollars
scholarship to the school of your choice, and you'll be
in the running for that. It's good to meet you, Nice.
Big fan of your fathers, by the way, and he
loves you, so thanks for having us. Thanks, good to
see your coach. Thanks for listening. Spencer a great job.
I had you jumping all over the place today and

(01:30:37):
you handle it like a champ. This is the Varsity
Blitz high school sports show, presented by your local Pick

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
