of you. The second hour of today's show, a couple
of Hall of Fame retired coaches coming in studio. Coach
Paul Wallersheim and Andy Serroni coming in studio. We're gonna
talk to them about the first year of retirement.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Now.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
I don't think those guys understand the word retirement as
well as some of us do, because I from what
I'm here, and both are still coaching grade school right.
Paul's coaching his son, I hear, Andy might be coaching
his grantson which I absolutely love. But I don't think
they understand the word retirement the way I do. So
we'll find out the second hour. The first hour, we

(00:58):
are talking Slayer of Basketball. Look, I walked into that
gym last night and I realized the last time I'd
been at a Slinger basketball game. I was coaching at Dominican,
coaching against Al HIV and went into a gym that
was kind of dark and dungee, and we always had
a lot more talent than they all did, and every

(01:18):
game came down to like two possessions. And he was
a heck of a basketball coach. But I realized walking in,
it's a new facility to me, and it's beautiful. It's
a really nice facility. And I kept hearing about the
Slinger of basketball team in the program, and I've not
seen him play. I haven't met their coach in person,

(01:39):
haven't had him in studio. And I told Bill Jacqueline
last night, watch out Slinger might become a basketball team,
basketball program, and a school that people talk basketball before
they talked football. And he goes, I don't want to
hear that. We can be both. It's okay, we can
be both. I'm joined in studio. The first segment, we
talked to their head coach, Alex Levine. How are you, Alex? Good?

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Thanks for having us.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Yeah, Hey, Ryan McMillan talks all kinds of smack about you,
by the way, all kinds of smack about you now,
I'm kidding. He's a big fan. You and him go
way back. Huh.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
I played for Ryan back at O'connomwak as a player,
and then I started coaching with him and he's a
mentor to me, huge influence in my life. And still
reach out to him, still talk to him.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Can you get a jump shot? No, not at all.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
Right, it's more of a golfer, a fisherman, I think.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
Yeah, he's an out doorboy football coach. Awfully good football
coach and a really good athletic director. How long you've
been the head coach at Slinger.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
This is my eighth season. Oh yeah, so it's been
been a while.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
It has. Did you coach basketball prior to that?

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (02:48):
So, I was at O'connawak as an assistant, you know,
coached the freshman JV teams. I was involved in their
youth program really heavily, and then I got hired at Slinger.
I knew that coach chib was kind of on his
last couple of seasons, so I thought it was a
good opportunity. And you mentioned coach chiev. He got opportunity
to learn from a Hall.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Of famer man.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
You know, no one more prepared than him. He was
really good at dissecting what other teams did and coach
having his teams prepared.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
We had I'm not kidding. We walking in right well,
looking at warm ups, you would you would point to
the Minican team and say, well, you know, twenty twenty five,
And I'm telling you he ran great. He was ahead
of the game back then. And what I didn't know
about him. I brought him in studio. I brought some
retired coaches in and during the first break, I said,

(03:37):
you're funny. He goes, yeah, I'm hysterical. I go I
never He goes, well, you coach against me and you
kept beating me. Of course I wouldn't be fun. But
I've really enjoyed the conversation I had with him, and
the fact that he was at that game last night
tells me a lot. He's still part of the program.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Yeah, you know, he'll he'll get to a couple of
games a year. I know he spent some time in Florida.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
He does.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
He's got too solid. Ones who still are coaching want
a Platteville one at Cuba City. Uh so they're a
basketball family. But he's a he's a Slinger Owl. And
the cool thing, one of the many cool things about
Slinger though, is like we get really well or we
get a lot of really good support. We're well supported
by our community, our teachers.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Do you know you're not the first Slinger coach to
tell me that. You know, I'm telling you Bill that
head football coach there are Coach Jacqueline. We have conversations
about this community a lot, and with some of the
things that he's gone through personally, with some losses in
his family, he gets tears in his eyes. He said,
you don't understand. This community has put their arms around

(04:41):
me and embraced me and helped me get through this.
And he says nothing but great things about this community.
I saw it firsthand last night. You know what. Look
I knew coming in. In fact, there there's a there's
a an assistant head assistant coach at a Division I
school that I happen to coach over at Dominicans sent
me a text yesterday and I don't know if one

(05:02):
of the brothers told him they're going to be on
a radio show or he talked with you, but he said, hey,
be nice to those boys tomorrow. And he said, I
spend way more time in Slinger than I ever thought
I would. But it's funny because I go to that
game and I texted him and said, I'll probably just
stay the first half. I think Ceedarburgh's a little bit
down this year. They lost a lot from last year.
And man, that the whole Slinger side was packed. It

(05:25):
was packed. The student sections were really involved in it.
And I get it what I was shocked at last night, coach,
And I don't know why I was shocked at it,
but I thought we would talk a lot about, you know, offensively,
how strong this team is. I was really impressed defensively
with what you guys ran and I was wondering, Yeah,

(05:46):
you kept that press on quite a while, I said,
in that first half, And I didn't remember that Cedarburgh
beach you last year and end of the year, and
maybe we need to just make sure they understand who's
the top dog here this year. I was so impressed defensively,
every pass, every pass was difficult for them, and not

(06:07):
only full court but half court. When they finally got
the ball over half court to get into what they
were running, you guys make things really difficult. He spend
a lot of time on the defensive event.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Yeah, every day we allocate, you know, thirty five forty
minutes to defense. We literally put a clock up and
that clock ticks down from that time. Coach Burger, Derek
Berger runs or coordinates our defense.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
He does because I coached him. He didn't play a
liquid defense when he was in grade school. He had
that big mullet and he just won. He scored a lot,
but defensively, if he's listening right now, he did not
dive on the floor looking for loose balls very often
in grade school, high school, in college he did.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Yeah, you know, he brings it intensity every day. He's
so good, and you know, I think our kids believe
in him and the plan that he puts forth. We
talk about pressuring teams and disrupting timing a lot, and
I think that was obvious early in the game last night,
getting them out of what they wanted to do.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
One of the young men that we're going to get
you in the second segment, Colton, who is a senior.
It's six three six', four but you had him on
their point. Guard and after the second time he stripped
the kid early in the game that that kid went
to the two guard and said you bring the ball,
up AND i could See colton kind of he was looking, like,
hey come, on why didn't you bring the ball up? Anymore,

(07:25):
defensively that kid really gets after. It is he the
kid who kind of starts it on the defensive? End
do you? Think?

Speaker 3 (07:31):
YEAH i think he sets the, tone you, know that
point of attack defense from the. Top there's nobody who
works harder on our. Team if you watch us play,
Defense colton's effort every night is it's. INSPIRING i watched
it last night AND i, Thought Holy, kyle look he's
going to get some.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Points he's not a focal, point and you got guys
that can shoot the heck out of the. Ball he's tipping.
Everything he's anytime there's a. SHOT i knew he was
coming in, today So i'm watching him and, man he's
trying to get, rebounds he's boxing, out he's doing all that.
STUFF i loved coaching kids like that because it doesn't
he never gets upset when guys look him off on

(08:10):
the offensive event and he's out setting picks and he's
diving on the floor GETTING i loved kids like that
because he's the. Glue AND i, thought, man this kid
starts their intensity and the defensive.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Event, yeah you, know he his intensity and focus really
sets a tone for us when you can disrupt their
timing with ball. Pressure it's Important golden has an intensity
to how he does things and that that's important. Too
and you kind of mentioned. That you, know he's scored
i think eight points last, night and six of them
were just taking the ball from the other player and

(08:42):
going to laying it. In you, know so we're not
necessarily running plays or anything for, him but he's he's
finding ways to score just by taking the ball from
the other team quite, simply well.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
Offensively you, Know you've got a lot of people that can. Score,
yeah and it starts with with one of the brothers
that we have In joey and his his brother who's
not feeling great. Today but those two Guys i've heard
a lot about for the last couple of, years AND
i was hoping to have them both in studio BECAUSE
i want to know what it's like when one brother
looks the other off and takes a. Shot AND i

(09:14):
tried to watch the dynamic between, them AND i thought
it was a really healthy. Dynamic, yeah they get along really.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
Well you, know they're. Brothers so they also have that
competitive side to.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
THEM i Think joey Thinks jack should pass him the ball,
more but we're gonna ask him that on the other
side of the.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
Break and if you only saw one of our games
and you picked up on, that you're absolutely. Right the
banter between them is. Great but they're also really supportive
of each. Other there's an image somebody took a picture
on our last game Where jack stole the ball and dunked,
it and there was nobody happier Than, joey just the
expression on his face As jack dunked. It but you,

(09:54):
know the competitiveness amongst each other is, Good but then
they also have a ton of respect for each other.
Too you, know we're fortunate to have brothers who who
are as skilled as they, are but they're also, really
really good.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
Kids Well i'll tell you when you have a, Kid
jack size on the top of your, offense and he
can shoot about four steps beyond the. Three he's really.
Comfortable there was a couple of times last night that
he wanted to pull it right from about four feet
past the. Three And i'm watching him the. WARMUPS i
GET i got to the game really early BECAUSE i

(10:27):
want to watch the dynamic in the warm. Ups Derek
berger does a great job of getting those guys a
sweat going and getting them competitive in the warm. Up
But i'm watching these guys and he's really comfortable from
the top from above four feet past the. Three and
there was a couple of times he wanted to pull
it and you could tell he made the pass and
then you'd run that high low and when he didn't

(10:48):
get it in the, post he popped right back out
and very comfortable to be able to shoot. It but
a guy his size with his BASKETBALL, iq what a
great guy to have on.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
Top, yeah you know he's he's our point guard and,
he's you, know maybe the biggest guy we have on the.

Speaker 5 (11:02):
Floor.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
Uh he does a great job of getting us into
things he can see over the top of the. Defense.
Uh you may not have necessarily seen it last, night
but his greatest skill is his. Passing he's a high level.
Passer there was a time last year where he threw
a pass behind his back from one block to the opposite.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
Corner for an open. Three.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Uh and it's just one of those plays where you're
just you can't believe.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
It, Right, wait White, Chocolate remember. Him. Yeah, yeah some
of these guys. Don't but if you, don't just google
White chocolate and watch some of the passes that that.
Kid that kid. Made the difference between the game that
That jack has And joey, has their skill sets are
a little bit. Different, yeah you, know For, jack his
jump shot has really. Improved.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Uh he's always been, able you, know the last couple
of years to score in the, paint be, dominant you,
know and make teams.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Pay he does a.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
Really good job of playing out of, uh you, know
kind of dribble post up what we would call, barkley
but really improved his jump. Shot he's a an elite,
passer you, know a guy that's six. SIX i think
we got there's Some DIVISION i schools are recruiting them
to play point, guard so it speaks to his ability
to pass and handle the.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
Ball, well the one of those teams is Playing purdue,
today by the, Way and that's finally we text back
and forth for about a half. HOUR i, said aren't
you getting ready to play the number one team in the.
Country he, goes, yeah coach will be all, Right, yeah,
yeah we'll be. Good he, goes do you just tell
those boys That i'll be listening and say good things about.
Me last year we had use of Great junior in

(12:30):
studio West ell Of central AND i knew G i was.
LISTENING i, Said, HEY i hear That DePaul offered maybe
you should you should take, that and my my phone
started blowing, up going what are you doing to be?
Coach knocked that stuff. Off the different skill set that
that That joey has compared To, jack if, if could
you Put joey at at point guard if you need?

Speaker 3 (12:51):
It, YEAH i think we have a ton of. Versatility,
uh AND i Think joey is more comfortable in that
role as. Well he's initiated some stuff for us already
this he's and we'll plan to have him do that.
More you, Know joey is really, Athletic, uh really. Athletic
can get up to the rim real. Fast, uh you,
know can, cover you can get from half court to

(13:11):
the rim and two. Dribbles you, know he's he showed
that he can dominate in the paint last night and
put people on his. Back and he's also he's a knockdown,
shooter so, uh you know it kind of for, him
it's just maybe diversifying his game where you score at multiple,
levels you, know and and and not just so much
of a catch and. Shoot and he's a.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
Sophomore, yeah he's a young. Guy, yeah and he played
varsity as a. Freshman. Yeah so the the the idea
for a kid like, that when it starts to slow
down for. HIM I i heard from other, people and
one being a Coach, burger who, said, look he came
in from eighth grade and and the and everything was was,
okay he Didn't it didn't take him a long time to,

(13:53):
go DO i belong at this? Level CAN i compete
at this? Level AND i, said why do you think that?
Is he, said because his older brother is you, know
he's competed against one of the best players in the
state for a long, time and so if he can
compete with his, brother he can play at this. Level
and it didn't take him long to understand, that, look
he's fourteen or thirteen years, old that he can play

(14:14):
against seventeen eighteen year old.

Speaker 4 (14:16):
Kids.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
Yeah you, Know joey did in it with his club
team this summer where he stepped up and played against you,
know like seventeen year old. Guys, uh but you kind
of have to remind yourself sometimes that they're you, know, freshman, sophomore, junior,
senior because you never think, that, Right like when somebody
says that to, you you're, like, Surprise, yeah they, are you,

(14:37):
know because their impact and the maturity is that of veteran.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Players i've got four grandsons from my daughter and another
grandson from my. Son my daughter that has the four boys,
her she's got a sophomore in high, school a, freshman
a seventh, grader and a three year. Old and these
three beat the heck out of this three year. Old
and he's gonna be the tough some. Mall AND i
think that that probably Helped, joey the kid that we're

(15:04):
gonna talk to on the other side of the break
and we'll ask him though those. QUESTIONS a couple of
other players that popped. Out bryson does a nice job for.

Speaker 3 (15:11):
You, Yeah Bryson fotos a three year varsity guy for.
Us he's gotten better every single. Year strong guard makes,
threes can get to the. Paint he's done a really
good job communicating for.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
Us that's that's WHERE i was going with, this the
communication part of. Him i'm watching him as he's getting.
People guys come in off the bench and he's going
to them, saying, hey you got this, KID i got.
Him we're running, This we're gonna we're gonna be in
the twelve or we're going man. OR i was really
impressed with him and and the fact on how what

(15:43):
he did on the, floor especially on the defensive, end
and how he looks up right and how he get
to the middle of the floor and made really good.
DECISIONS i was impressed with, him and and And Devin
berger shoots the heck out of the, ball shoots the
ball way better than his daddy. DID i can just
tell you that didn't get his daddy's, size for, sure
he got his mama's. Size but very comfortable in what

(16:06):
his role is on that.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
Team, yeah it's nice to see him find success in his.
Role you, know he's he's kind of the one one
guy who's a little bit new to his role on our.
Team so he's kind of trying to get. Comfortable and
last night he got comfortable and he could shoot a little.
Bit everybody on our, team you, know knows that he
can shoot. It so, sometimes you, know For devin it's
almost like proving it to himself a little bit kind

(16:28):
of just building that. Confidence but he's a knockdown shooter
and it was fun to. SEE i think everybody on
our team, was you, know just really genuinely excited to
See devin succeed last night and hopefully he can build on.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
It do you? Know that was the other, part coach
THAT i have to tell you again being a former,
Coach WHEN i get there, EARLY i want to watch warm,
ups and THEN i want to watch how the bench
and the coaching staff reacts to success and then some.
Failure not a lot of failure last, night, right a
couple of possessions where things didn't go, right AND i, write,

(17:00):
way look to the, bench and you got guys on
the bench that are standing, up, going, hey don't, worry let's.
Go let's, go and not coaches talk about. Players and
then what look near the end of the first, half
you were able to get some guys in because it
was getting out of hand a little, bit and the
guys that were starters were the first ones off the
slapping each other five and doing. That and WHAT i

(17:21):
look for is, culture, RIGHT i want to see is
this team? Together is is this is this a group
that are playing for each? Other AND i walked away last, night, going, oh,
man this team's going to cost some problems this year
for teams in this conference and when it gets to the
playoff time because of. That do you agree with me on?

Speaker 6 (17:39):
That?

Speaker 2 (17:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
Absolutely it's kind of a group that's been together for
this IS i think our third, season you, know with
kind of the same cast of, characters and it's a
really connected group and we've been on them for the
last three years about encouraging each, other supporting each, other
communicating with each, other and every year it's gotten. Better
and you, KNOW i think one of the reasons that

(18:01):
we had a successful year last year and we're off
to a good start this year is because we care
about each, other you, Know AND i think that that
shows up not in a box, score but it makes
a difference in wins and.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
Losses, COACHING i say this a lot on this. Show
all the teams have've coached in the. Past there are
sometimes some years that you have a ton of success
and the team does not get long and that year
is not all that. Fun and then there are years
that you don't win much but the team really gets
along and that's not nearly as. Painful but every once
in a, while you get that special team and that

(18:33):
special year where you have a lot of. Success and these,
guys it doesn't matter what class they're. In they all hang.
Out they all go out and have, pizza they do
they do dinners, together they watch film, together they get
shots up, together. Laughing those are so special and so.
Rare in thirty six, YEARS i could probably tell you
three or four teams where that, happened and it doesn't

(18:55):
happen very. Often and now being through going through What
i've gone, through that's the. Reason get there. Early AND
i see when you guys are waiting to even go warm,
up and these guys are all laughing and pointing to
people in the crowd and waving and just relaxed having.
Fun and when when they come off the floor and
guys stand up to high five, them it's it's it

(19:15):
is something different than a lot of the games and
a lot of teams THAT i go, See, HEY i
asked you which which to which guys talks more, Right
we're gonna get To joey And colton on the other,
side and you, said, Well colton talks a lot on the.
Floor put a, microphone we'll find out how he. Does
we're gonna start with the senior on the other side
of the. Break Colt, news a, senior been part of

(19:37):
the program a long, time and And, joey A sophomore's
get a lot of looks from from from a lot of,
teams college teams throughout the. Country we're gonna talk to
these guys on the other side of the break about
being part of the Slinger aul basketball. Program, COACH i
really appreciate your willingness to come in and let us,
highlight promote and celebrate the stuff you guys are doing

(19:58):
out And. Slinger.

Speaker 3 (19:59):
Yeah, yeah it's great to be here and celebrate our
kids and the things that they're doing on a daily.

Speaker 1 (20:03):
Basis youth program's.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
Good huh, yeah you know it's it's a three third
through twelfth grade, program and you, know we're invested in
trying to help all of our levels.

Speaker 1 (20:11):
Improve are you a married, guy what's your wife's? NAME
i am.

Speaker 3 (20:15):
Married my wife Is her name Is.

Speaker 1 (20:16):
Desiree Desiree special place In heaven for. Her if you're
that involved in The Slingger. Pro WHEN i started, basketball
it was, like you, know maybe end Of october till
middle Of march and then you, know get away from.
It none of that going on.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
Nowadays, no she's she's, awesome and we have a. Newborn
he's six months.

Speaker 1 (20:33):
Old so.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
Congratulation, yeah it's it's been a, change but just a beautiful.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
Blessing what is his first, Name? Augie? Augie, yeah what a,
man what a. Blessing he had a lot to be
thankful for last. Week. Yeah. Absolutely has he learned what
his left hand is, yet because we got to make
sure that he dribbles a little bit better than the
two guys were. Talking do. Next i'm only kidding because
they're in. Studio we're going to get to a. Break
we'll continue talking Slinger i'll basket. Fotball, look you've heard

(21:01):

going to start with, You. COLTON i asked a girl
sitting at the game last night who was A slinger.
STUDENT i, said these three guys are coming in studio,
tomorrow which, one which one talks the? Most she was,
LIKE i don't think any of, them to be honest with,
You So i'm gonna start with the senior leader on this.

(22:07):
Team and, MAN i was impressed with this. KID i
was really impressed defensively with this kid and then, offensively
how he spaced the, floor how he fought for, everything
and he's the kind of KID i loved. Coaching. Colton
is pronounce your last name for?

Speaker 2 (22:22):
Me Uh Man's.

Speaker 1 (22:23):
Colton Mans, hey, congratulations good win last. Night you feel
pretty good as a senior leader on this, team feel
pretty good about the direction on how this team is
playing right?

Speaker 2 (22:33):
Now, YEAH i feel pretty.

Speaker 7 (22:34):
Good you, know we had a successful year last, year
AND i think we're just going to keep building on
that this year and hopefully get to what we want
to get.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
To the game last night Against, cedarburgh you guys beat
him eighty seven fifty, seven And cedarburg's it's going to
be a little bit for. Them they lost some really
good players AND i think it's going to be a
challenge for. Them next on the Schedule Wisconsin. Lutheran, right
you might as well just jump right. In, man that

(23:02):
team is awfully. Good you play them At Wisconsin lutheran
on on the, ninth and looking forward to that. Matchup, yeah.

Speaker 7 (23:10):
DEFINITELY i mean they're a great, team And i'm excited
for the opportunity to show what we can do and,
everything And i'm just excited for.

Speaker 1 (23:17):
It any surprise for you That slinger has gotten to the,
point like when you were a, freshman did you have
an idea, that, hey this program we got a chance
to be pretty. Good any surprise for? You you, know
you guys ranked number two in the, state and, YEAH
i mean this is a team that guys like me.
GET i had to get you guys in, here, right

(23:38):
you were forcing my, Hand you were forcing me to come.
Out AND i live In, milwaukee so straight out one
sixty four not a bad, ride BUT i had to
come out and see you guys, play and you're forcing my.
Hand any surprise to you that where the program has
come in the years you've been in part of.

Speaker 7 (23:55):
It, YEAH i mean it's it's nice where we've. Came
And i'm not really. SURPRISED i, mean my grade's been
playing together our whole, life and we've been good since third.
Grade like me And, Brett rice And, devin we're all
seniors and we've just been together, forever and then we Got, Jack, Joe.
Jude we all just compliment each other very. Well SO
i think we're meeting our.

Speaker 2 (24:16):
Expectations, joey how you doing?

Speaker 1 (24:19):
Today pretty? Good good? Game come a little closer if you, Can't,
hey we got to do a shout. Out Jim, gardner
your grandfather lives in the, neighborhood was at the game last.
Night he's a big basketball.

Speaker 8 (24:30):
Fan, yeah he played That. Plattefell he comes most of the.

Speaker 1 (24:34):
Games can you still shoot? IT i don't know about all. That,
yeah come, On, jim guard game of. Horse i'm taking, Him,
Okay i'm taking Him i'll rent the gym out at
out At slinger to get that game and we'll raise
some money for a. Nonprofit can you hear him during the.

Speaker 8 (24:50):
GAME i mean usually. NOT I i can definitely hear
him after the. Game he's always talking about. Rebounding he's
big on.

Speaker 1 (24:57):
Rebounding, well you guys did that last night for. Sure
WHEN i talked about you in the first segment And
Coach berger And, Colton i'm gonna get to you in
a minute on. This you played for, him And i'm
wondering as a third, grader what was it like BECAUSE
i coached him in sixth. Grade, yeah AND i can
tell you what he was like back. Then, joey when

(25:17):
you played varsity as a, freshman do you remember early?
On was it was it too was it too? Fast
too big for? You were you fully prepared for?

Speaker 8 (25:26):
THAT i mean it was obviously a little bit of step.
Up But i've been PLAYING au for a little, bit
So i've been seeing a little bit faster. Competition but,
yeah varsity's definitely step.

Speaker 1 (25:36):
Up, hey how much playing With did you PLAY aau
with your brother? Then so you moved up and played
or is this the first the playing That. Slinger first
time you guys played on the same team. Together, oh
we actually all through.

Speaker 8 (25:49):
Youth we played on the same, team not during au
just during like school. Ball but, yeah we've been playing
with each other for a long.

Speaker 1 (25:55):
Time you guys go one on one a little bit
every once in a. While who wins those? Games he's
not here and he's probably sleeping because you're not feeling,
Well so you don't have to tell me the truth
because you guys are both smirking a little. Bit it
gets to be a.

Speaker 8 (26:08):
Battle, Huh, yeah It's, yeah it's usually a.

Speaker 1 (26:11):
Battle he's a little bit, bigger a little.

Speaker 8 (26:14):
Stronger, yeah he's got me in weight and height for.

Speaker 1 (26:16):
Sure but you can shoot it a little. Bit, yeah,
YEAH i watched that last night for. Sure. Cold what's
going on with you next? Year do you know? Yet?

Speaker 7 (26:24):
Oh, Yeah i'm gonna go To, superior play basketball and
do physical.

Speaker 1 (26:28):
Therapy it's a long way from, home, boy yeah a.

Speaker 7 (26:31):
Little, bit BUT i MEAN i got a family cabin
right around like thirty minutes away from.

Speaker 5 (26:35):
There.

Speaker 1 (26:36):
Perfect, yeah that's. Awesome with with playing youth all through
with With, slinger that that's something. Different, look that's all you,
know right when the next hour WHEN i talked to
COACH saroni that's kind of how Itsex. HAMILTON i. COACHED
i was in private schools and we were introducing kids freshman. Year,

(26:58):
right big, different big. Difference these kids that you played
with when you were in youth, basketball third, fourth fifth.
Grade there was a bunch of youth kids there last,
night and they all had slinger gear. On when you
would go home and close your eyes and dream about
playing on A friday night at home with a crowd
like last, night.

Speaker 7 (27:17):
Right, yeah, Definitely it's definitely been always a dream of Mine.

Speaker 1 (27:20):
Colton as long As i've been doing this, SHOW i
always ask, guys what's your great point? AVERAGE i want
to know if there's student. Athletes i've never ever had
anybody where you kind of looked like you were embarrassed
to tell me you were almost a three, five like
a three, Four like when guys are, embarrassed they're, Like
i'm a two to one or a two four or,
Something and you were, like, ah don't ask me. That

(27:41):
and then you came out with three four because the
boy next year's a three seven AND i get, that but,
you like you understand what being a true student athlete is.

Speaker 7 (27:51):
Correct, yeah, definitely for. Sure your mom and dad come
to every? Game oh, Yeah my mom's definitely every. Game
my dad tries to get, too as many as you.

Speaker 1 (27:58):
Can Bro if they're both, there who do you hear more?

Speaker 7 (28:00):
DEATH i don't really hear either of. THEM i hear
my grandparents a lot.

Speaker 2 (28:03):
Though that's.

Speaker 1 (28:04):
Awesome, Look i'm a grandfather and that's who they hear as.
WELL i love that they come To your grandparents come
to a lot of.

Speaker 7 (28:11):
Games, YEAH i mean they're probably my biggest. Fans you,
know they're every single game they can get.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
To what are their?

Speaker 2 (28:15):
Names, Uh Bill broger And Karen, Irwin.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
Bill And Karen. Man thank you for doing that BECAUSE
i THOUGHT i was the only. One me And Jim
gardner are the only ones in the stands yelling about
boxing out and, rebounding WHICH i really. Love, Hey, joey
you're getting a lot of a lot of attention right
now as far as some college. Looks when when you
think about, it if you could close your eyes and

(28:40):
pick any college in the country that would, offer where
where would you?

Speaker 8 (28:44):
GO I, MEAN i don't really have that dream, school
BUT i think it's really cool everywhere That I've i've.
SEEN i don't really have a specific, School but.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
Is there a style of ball that you want to?
PLAY i like how we.

Speaker 8 (28:59):
PLAY i like fast. BASE i like to get up and.

Speaker 1 (29:02):
Down, yeah you guys focus a lot on the defensive.
End and when your coach, said, look we put a
forty five minutes we go on. DEFENSE i watched you
play defense last. Night you're a good defensive. PLAYER i
thought you were a little bit more engaged on the offensive,
side but you didn't defensively last. Night your, guards the
guys up Top colton in, particular causing so many problems

(29:26):
for seedwork to get into their. Offense the defensive side
of the ball important side for.

Speaker 8 (29:31):
You, YEAH i mean we take a lot of pride in.
Defense like coach, said we take a segment out of
every practice work on. Defense SO i think we play good.
Defense we have A i like our chances that winning every.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
Game, YEAH i do. Too, hey IF i asked you
when you look at we don't want to put up
any any bulletin board material in anybody's locker. Room but
is there a team probably in your conference that you
circle and, say man that you know what we're getting?
Them this.

Speaker 8 (29:59):
Year the, TEAM i, mean, there we have a really
good conference this. YEAR i, think just like going back to,
HISTORY i Think homestead And nicola are always really good
and then White Fish bay is really good this.

Speaker 1 (30:11):
Year, yeah they beat they Beat nikola last. Night, YEAH
i was a little surprised by, that but, yeah the
conference is awfully. Good that's Team. Colton how about. You
you've been at this a little bit longer than the sophomore.
Here is there a team in that in that conference
that you go? Man not? Tonight?

Speaker 7 (30:27):
Uh, YEAH i mean, we Like joey, said we have
a great. Conference and over the last four, years you,
know it's always Been nicolay And home said pretty much
at the, top and then we've been able to get
up there.

Speaker 1 (30:37):
Too. YEAH i agree with. That are you a multi sport?

Speaker 2 (30:40):
Athlete, no not.

Speaker 8 (30:41):
ANYMORE i played just. Basketball i'll get on the golf
course here and.

Speaker 1 (30:46):
There you can hit the ball a little.

Speaker 4 (30:47):
Bit.

Speaker 1 (30:48):
Yeah, Yeah i'm so addicted to, that And i'm. Terrible i'm.
Horrible everything goes to the, right but not as far
to the right as it used. To and IF i
hit a drive two, Hundred i'm jumping up and. Down
that's isn't that. Bad that's horrible for a boy in my,
size in my, AGE i should be able to hit
the ball a little bit. Better growing Up, colton were
you a multi sport?

Speaker 7 (31:06):
Athlete, YEAH i mean WHEN i was growing, UP i played, baseball, football, soccer,
everything but then ONCE i got to high, SCHOOL i
kind of limited down to just.

Speaker 1 (31:13):
Basketball and and why superior for? You is it because
you're familiar with the area and like the. School, Yeah
i'm familiar with the. AREA i like it up.

Speaker 7 (31:22):
There and then also so WHEN i was a, freshman
we had a senior at our, School Andrew, beers And
i've always been pretty close with, Him so it's just
like he's kind of like an older brother to.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
Me Ish, MAN i appreciate you bringing that, up because
that's my next. Question He so he's the guy that
you that you watched and learned how to be a,
leader BECAUSE i watched you last night cold whether whether
you are a and your vocal on the on the
on the, court for, sure is that who taught you
how to be a leader for a program like?

Speaker 4 (31:49):
This?

Speaker 7 (31:50):
Yeah, YEAH i Mean andrew's always been like that guy for.
Me you, Know i've always looked up to him growing
up and.

Speaker 1 (31:56):
Everything so, yeah that that works out pretty. Well is
he up there going to?

Speaker 2 (32:00):
School, yeah, Yess i'll play one year with him up.

Speaker 4 (32:02):
There.

Speaker 1 (32:03):
Man that good for. YOU i love that area for for.
Sure when there's four seniors on this, team, correct do
you guys talk, About, look who's gonna be the guy
saying we got to get in the weight room and
we've got to get out to you, know open, gyms
and we've got to get to summer league and we've
got to do this. Stuff do you guys as the four, Seniors,

(32:24):
look you've got young, guys a junior that's the leader
on this team and his brother for sure as far
as their play on the, Court but as a, senior
this is your team and it's your. Program do you,
guys as four seniors talk about who's gonna do what
on the leadership?

Speaker 2 (32:39):
Side?

Speaker 7 (32:40):
YEAH i mean we don't really need that, because like
everyone on the team is just all into, everything so
we all just go to everything and do everything.

Speaker 2 (32:47):
Together.

Speaker 1 (32:48):
YEAH i noticed that last. Night you guys don't mind
hanging out together a little, bit, right mm.

Speaker 8 (32:52):
Hmm.

Speaker 1 (32:53):
YEAH i love.

Speaker 4 (32:54):
That.

Speaker 1 (32:54):
Guys we're gonna get to a break on other side
of the. Break i'm gonna have your head coach join.
Us is there a that he does and don't just
say the forty five minute defensive? Drill you're a drill
that you guys do, once, twice maybe every day that
you can't wait never to have to do. Again, Colton,
uh what drills does he do? That you just shake
your head and, go come, on, Man.

Speaker 7 (33:15):
OH i mean there's this one. Drill these guys, too
and it's like it's ultimate. Football we gotta go, baseline
the baseline without even driveling the. Ball we.

Speaker 2 (33:22):
Don't we just got to pass it back and.

Speaker 1 (33:23):
Forth you hate.

Speaker 2 (33:25):
IT i mean it gets, tiring but it's good for.

Speaker 1 (33:28):
Us, joey how about?

Speaker 8 (33:29):
You, YEAH i MEAN i forgot what the drill is,
called but it's just it's full, court no. Dribbling you
just can only. Pass those usually get.

Speaker 1 (33:37):
Tiring but, yeah you don't mind the shooting drills, though, Right, no,
no you don't mind. Those you don't. Mind have you
always been a pretty good shooter from the time you
were in third or fourth?

Speaker 8 (33:47):
Grade, YEAH i feel Like i've been able to shoot
the ball pretty.

Speaker 1 (33:50):
Well, yeah that's. Awesome, guys we're gonna get to a
break other side of the, break we'll Have alex join,
us the head basketball coach At, slinger and we'll talk
a little bit More Slinger. Owl and then the second,
hour a couple Of hall Of fame retired AND i
got a bone to pick With Andy, serroni by the,
way you know what he. Did and he's sitting over.
There we got put in The hall Of fame the same,

(34:11):
year and they were taking the picture and he's standing
to my left and to my Right Percy eddie who's six,
eight And Harvey knuckles is six, eight and, me SO
i look Like i'm about four foot, ten AND i
go a, coach switch spots with. Me serroni, goes absolutely,
not AND i, go come on spots with. Me he,
GOES i know what you're. Doing, Huh i'm not doing.

(34:33):
It AND i looked up in this. PICTURE i looked
at the picture of my wife laughs all the. Time she's,
like you look like you're like four foot eight against
AND i, SAID i. Know AND i told both these
guys you, KNOW i would own you in the. Paint
and they're, like, okay oh, man. Whatever when you get
to a break on other side of the, break we're
talking Slinger owl basketball and, guys if you listen to my,
show you know they have forced me into. This not

(34:56):
THAT i don't like Slinger. OWLS i love. Them it's
a great, program a great. Community But i've talked football
a lot with, them And i've talked a little baseball
two over the, years but not. Basketball but they have
forced my. Hand they're ranked number two in the state
AND i watched last night AND i found out. Why
if you want to see these guys play against a
really good, team go watch them Against Wisconsin. Lutheran AND

(35:18):
i believe It's tuesday At Wisconsin lutheran and that's going
to be a really competitive. Games it's one That i'm
definitely going to put on my calendar and try to
get over to. See this is The Varsity Blitz High
School Sports, show presented by your Local pick And save
And Metro market, stores only On Fox sports nine twenty
and Your iHeart radio. App welcome back to The Varsity.

(35:39):
Blitz High School Sports show is always presented by your
Local pick And save And Metro market. Stores coming live
from The donovan And Jorgansen heating And Cooling, studios largest
employee OWNED hvac company in the state Of. Wisconsin we're
talking Slinger ol basketball this first. Hour, hey, coach these
guys are really good in bass for this, community this,

(36:01):
school in your. Program, MAN i love. That and they
do not Want they asked me when you had to
leave the studio to, say we don't want to do
that drill. Anymore we don't think it helps us and it.
Does keep doing that, drill in, fact you should probably do,
it you, know maybe three four days a.

Speaker 3 (36:19):
Week if you can't, absolutely Maybe sunday at eleven. Am
sunday at eleven that's when we practice. Next so maybe
that's what we'll. Do we'll kick it off that.

Speaker 1 (36:27):
Way, yeah let him get warmed up and then instead
of forty five minutes, defense haven't run that thing for
forty five. Minutes would be the best shape of all. Time, Hey,
joey WHEN i asked you who would win one on?
ONE i got a text From Jim gardner and he
said he. Would and now not either you Or. Jack
do you guys ever talk about playing together at the

(36:49):
next level or is that the time you're gonna? Split
i'm a little. Closer if you can here you, GO.

Speaker 8 (36:54):
I mean we haven't really thought about it too. MUCH i,
MEAN i think it'd be, cool BUT i don't know
if that's gonna be LIKE i decide like for, Sure, yeah,
yeah WE'VE i think it'd be cool to do.

Speaker 1 (37:04):
That, Hey, colton how quick is this four years gone for?
You you can pull that microphone over to.

Speaker 3 (37:11):
You.

Speaker 1 (37:11):
Yep look you remember as a freshman senior night you, thought,
man that is so long from. Now how quick is
this journey had gone for?

Speaker 8 (37:20):
You?

Speaker 7 (37:21):
YEAH i mean it goes by. QUICK i can remember
freshman year PLAYING jv like like it was yesterday.

Speaker 1 (37:27):
And and and there the night that they were having
the parents come, out moms are crying and and that's
coming up this year for. You so you're of last
right then that the last time you're going to go
play At, homestead last time you're going to play at
Nick Lay and, look your parents' grandparents have thought about.
That you don't need to think about it because you

(37:48):
go play ball and go get a. Win but, man
it's quite it goes very. FAST i think when from
the time you're a freshman time you're a, senior your
favorite memory of being part of Slinger al. Basketball so,
far you got a lot of basketball to be. Played
what would it be so?

Speaker 7 (38:03):
Far, oh mine's probably gotta be just this last summer
we went To madison for a. Tournament we had a
hotel overnight and we were just all in our hotel
rooms just having. FUN i Remember levine coming to make
sure we're all like so behaving at like eleven.

Speaker 1 (38:17):
O'clock did you do the OLD i don't. Know if
you guys are, TRAVELING i don't want to give away,
secrets but you do the piece of scotch tape on the?
Doors we. Didn't we didn't do.

Speaker 3 (38:28):
That usually What i'll do Is i'll Tell Coach berger
to kind of do a rounds and that usually takes
care of it because his presence kind of is intimidating
to the. Guys and Then i'll do a round after.

Speaker 1 (38:37):
That, YEAH i just see you. Guys. KNOW i used
to put a, peach we say in your room eleven.
O'clock if you have to leave your, room you got
to call, Me AND i put a piece of scotch
tape on the door at eleven. Thirty i'd walk around
and if one was, broken knocked in the door and
say who left the? Room nobody had to? Go, yeah
they THOUGHT i had cameras out. There it was a

(38:58):
piece of scotch, tape and to this DAY i have
kids hit it at our adults buried with. Kids how'd
you know That i'm the one who stole your? Pizza
AND i go THAT added know somebody rated, you BUT
i know you came out of your room because of
a piece of. TAPE i. Love the memory had nothing
to do with you scored thirty in a. Game it
had to do with getting together with these boys and hanging. Out,

(39:20):
joey you're a. Sophomore you, got you, know for three
games on your sophomore year or two. GAMES i don't
know how many games you've. Played But i'm gonna ask
you the same. Question your favorite memory of being part
of this? Program what would it?

Speaker 8 (39:32):
Be i'd say my favorite memory is at home Against?
Nicole how was we won conference that? GAME i think
that's that was really cool because it's been a while
Since slingers one conference for basketball at, least AND i
think that was a really fun game to.

Speaker 1 (39:48):
Plan, alex you hear those. Answers, Yeah AND i talked
to you about, culture. Right colton could could have, said, hey,
LOOK i had a GAME i had fourteen, steals AND
i had, this AND i had. That my grandfather was
hugging me after the, game and he could have SAID
i had thirty in this game against and neither one
talked about how they. Played he talked about hanging out

(40:08):
with the boys in a hotel room up In madison having,
fun and he talked about as a, team and he
knows the. HISTORY us winning conference was a big. Deal
that tells me a lot about about the culture you're
building within this.

Speaker 3 (40:21):
Program, yeah you also Mentioned colton, graduating AND i try
not to think about. THAT i hope the you, know
the four four and a half months or whatever we
have here is a long four and a half. MONTHS
i want to enjoy every moment of.

Speaker 1 (40:35):
It here's What and he needs to understand, this AND
i know you've told him, this but to be live
on you, know nine to, Twenty Fox sports nine, twenty
The iHeartRadio. App for you to say, that and when
you look at the box scores and you look at the,
stats he doesn't jump. Out BUT i watched it last, night,
man AND i would not be happy. EITHER i would

(40:56):
like him to have another year or two to be
able to continue to set the, tone especially on that
side of the ball that he. Believed, MAN i don't
know if he wants to be the defensive, stopper but
he understands what his role is and to get the.
Ball the ball to some of these guys that can
straight up shoot. It But, man for you to, go,
LOOK i don't want this thing to end because some

(41:17):
of these seniors have given a lot to this. Program
tells me a. Lot, hey WHEN i asked them the,
question you're not going to answer, this who do you
circle in that? Conference?

Speaker 3 (41:26):
YEAH i agree with what they. SAID i thought they
did a great job answering. It like our league is really.
Tough there is just not an off. Night you got
to bring it every. Night we have good, Coaches we've
got really good. TEAMS i was looking at some of
The North shore scores from last Or tuesday night and
just how we competed against some of the better teams

(41:48):
around the state or one GAMES i think is telling
to how good the league is going to. Be and
there's only seven teams in, it so you a fourteen
conference game or, sorry, sixteen ten or twelve. Whatever we
have a, short smaller league this, year but every game
is going to be extremely significant and it's going to
be determined based on how we.

Speaker 1 (42:06):
Play, hey do you think that this team understands that
you are now, Look Mark miller picks you guys win the,
conference you ranked two in the. State going from hunting
right you're Hunting, Homestead you're Hunting, Nicolay you're hunting these.
Teams you're now going to be hunted right. Now you're
the team That homestead, circles That nicolay. Circles that some

(42:30):
of these teams that may have had their way with
You cedarburg was. Won right last, night you let them
know pretty early in that contest that what happened at
the end of last year is not going to happen this.
Year do you think that these guys understand the difference
between hunting and being the?

Speaker 3 (42:46):
Hunted we talk about it a, lot but really the
focuses is like just being. Consistent we realize that if
we're consistent and we bring it every day in practice
and we treat each game the same regardless of who we're,
playing that will likely be. Successful you, know we're not
trying to go, undefeated but we're trying to become the
best version of. Ourselves And i'm sure there'll be a
bump in the. Road we'll embrace, that we'll learn from,

(43:08):
It we'll get, better And i'm excited about.

Speaker 1 (43:10):
It, hey as, coaches don't we don't look, ahead but
we work. AHEAD i took a look at at your,
regional took a look at all of. That have you
do you do much of? That or do you do
you really focus day to? Day you?

Speaker 3 (43:25):
KNOW i think human nature is to always look, ahead
but you got to be intentional about being day to.
Day we scheduled very. Challenged we have a very challenging
schedule this. Year we did that on. Purpose we want
to put ourselves in positions where we're tested so that
when we get to the end of the, season you,
know we know what it takes in order to kind
of get to where we want to.

Speaker 1 (43:43):
Go, LOOK i told, people if they want to see
your team, play go go watch you guys play at Wiscons.
Lutheran and if you can't get there or add this to,
it but you guys are playing two really good opponents
a w by shootout AND i Think Mark, miller him
AND i Have he's allowed me to partner with him
during The wby shootout for years and this is again this.

(44:07):
Year we're running commercials, form we're promoting. It i've got
guys on every week Because i'm such a fan Of
wall The wall, basketball right The Majira's Family foundation and he,
did you guys know, favors WHICH i love about. It
he he, know he knew a year from, now a
year ago that a year from, Now slinger is going
to be. Loaded i'm going to put them Against arrowhead

(44:29):
And Oshkosh. North so you get ready for that one three,
one and get to get ready for What Oshkosh north
is going to. Bring but you're right WHEN i look
at your not conference, schedule you're not shying. Away huh.

Speaker 3 (44:40):
Yeah and that's a great opportunity to be in the
wby you, KNOW i think Our saturday night game is
at like six.

Speaker 1 (44:46):
Thirty it's five. Time, yeah so you you.

Speaker 3 (44:50):
You want to play in those environments and in those.

Speaker 4 (44:52):
Games.

Speaker 3 (44:53):
Uh so we're excited about. That and credit To mark
for putting together a great. Event, joey you come a
little closer if you. Can you understand.

Speaker 1 (45:01):
That and you might not saw it a ton last,
year but you guys are gonna see it now when
you go To Wisconsin lutheran On, tuesday it's going to be.
Packed and when you, still when you go to The wby,
shootout it's going to be. Packed it's now you guys
are Making you guys are primetime. Now and the fact
that that you And colton and your brother and some

(45:22):
of these other, guys these, seniors has gotten this program
to the point that a guy Like Mark miller, says,
look we're gonna put them Against arrowhead at six point
fifteen On saturday night or whatever night it, is because
that's how good we feel they're going to. Be can
you feel that that that when you're walking into a
gym that people are are you, know have circled this

(45:44):
game and are guys talking to you a little bit
more during the, game, going hey, man you're not as
good as your. Brother that's HOW i would talks back to.
You by the, way hey, man your brother's way better than.
You you know that kind of. Stuff do you feel
that when you walk into a gym?

Speaker 8 (45:57):
NOW i, mean, yeah every like you were saying, earlier
everyone like we have a targetwner back, now BUT i
think Even slinger like every, game every home, game we
don't have a ton this, year BUT i feel like most,
games The slinger community packs it. Out SO i feel
like our team is pretty used to those like big,
environments and like a lot of people in the, stands.

Speaker 1 (46:17):
That student section was that they get after. It they
get after. It it's same thing with. Football do you
think and cold let me go to. You do you
think the fact that the football program won a state
championship what that does for a school is now other
programs want to feel. That they they want that send,
out they want the cops to take the bus, out

(46:39):
that kind of. Stuff do you if you can move
that over a little? Bit did you feel that last?
Year and were you in the crowd for the state championship? Game?

Speaker 7 (46:48):
YEAH i MEAN i was at the state championship game
and it was a great atmosphere AND i really, like
hope like we can get that same thing.

Speaker 1 (46:55):
Too, yeah there's something alex team in the school wins
the state championship AND i don't care what sport it,
is it does something to the school where the excitement
level is through the roof and now everybody wants to
get a feel for. That do you think that your
basketball players felt? That and did you see that in
the offseason they got after, it maybe a little bit

(47:15):
harder than.

Speaker 3 (47:15):
Normal, YEAH i think we've gotten better every summer and
that's what you need to. Do but our, school not just,
football but, volleyball baseball has been good as. WELL i
think last year we won conference championships in, football, basketball and,
baseball which is. Incredible in baseball and, BASKETBALL i hadn't

(47:37):
won one in like twenty.

Speaker 1 (47:38):
Years what's going on in the water And? Slinger do
you think is it just look once the youth program
gets good and competitive and kids can see that they
can go from you, know third to eighth and playing
with the same guys Like colton talked, About i've played
with these, guys these four of, us since third grade
and see the. Progression do you think that helps that youth? Program?

Speaker 3 (48:01):
YEAH i think you, know you the players on the,
floor the varsity guys kind of set the standard for
what the program is supposed to look. LIKE i had
somebody say to me last, night you, know the one
thing that stood out from watching you guys play is
just how hard you. Play and then you talked about you,
know culture and energy and when youth kids see that
and then they want to emulate it and they want
to be a part of. It and they, see you,

(48:22):
know everybody in the community packed into a. Gym it
starts to snowball and then success builds upon.

Speaker 1 (48:27):
Itself, hey real, quick and we got to get to
a break because we got Two hall Of fame retired
coaches waiting for. Us but joy and and and Cold
AND i hope you guys understand when when you were
in third and fourth grade and you'd go to the
local grocery store and slinger or to the quick trip
and you would see a senior or sophomore that you just,
watched they think you guys ARE nba. Players and understand

(48:50):
the eyes when you're out in the community are really on, you.
Guys and understand that continue to be a good, ambassador you,
know for your, family for the, school for this coach
and the staff that understand when you're out in, public
all these little kids are they want to be you.
Guys and and please make sure that you understand that

(49:10):
role model kind of. Thing and make sure, that especially You,
colton you don't let this sophomore get in any. Trouble
you don't want him getting in Any make sure he
keeps doing his. Homework make sure that If Jim gardner
needs to get involved and snap on him a little.
Bit you can give him a. Call. Coach thank. YOU
i really appreciate you coming. IN i apologize for not

(49:31):
talking More sling Or ale basketball throughout the, years but
you got me, now AND i apologize for not having
the in prior to. This it's good to meet. You,
thanks good to see you. Guys keep up the good.
Workout Hopefully i'll see you On. Tuesday if, NOT i
definitely will see out of the w by. Shootout we're
going to get to a. Break the other side of the,
break hall Of fame Coaches Andy Serni Paul wallersham will

(49:54):

put quotations retired basketball Coaches Andy Serroni Sussex hamilton, Coach
paul Wallershein, Dominican Martin, Luther andy abou to start with, you,
coach how you've. Been i've been.

Speaker 4 (50:37):
Great, everything everything's, good and you know we'll Get, yeah
trying to adjust to the.

Speaker 1 (50:46):
New. Life new. Life, yeah definition of. RETIREMENT i don't
know if you went to The webster dictionary and read
what that, is because you're still coaching. Right.

Speaker 4 (50:55):
Ah. YEAH i got my third grade third grade team
and that's been all pretty. Good we started In october and,
yeah so WE i got a tournament Tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (51:05):
Brookfield, lease are you the head?

Speaker 4 (51:06):
COACH i, Am. YEAH i have my son in law
And Josh barnbrook another dad there are coaching so we kind,
of you, know we're all together in.

Speaker 1 (51:18):
It so When cam was in third grade is WHEN
i met, you by the, way and that's WHEN i
started thinking ABOUT i was coaching with Coach wallersheim At,
dominican running The Milwaukee swish thing and WE'RE i think
in fourth grade running some little tournaments and you kept
calling and, going, hey you have a spot AND i, go,
coach you, know it's fourth, grade and you always, said

(51:40):
don't we will compete hard and we don't care what
the score. Is and a lot of guys say that
nobody really means. It you. Did and you came over
those you, know with with With Brett Mina key and
With cam and some pretty good, players and, yes, yeah
and and and you got drilled and you kept coming
back going it's, okay we're getting. Better we're getting. Better

(52:03):
is that the approach with the third grade team you're?

Speaker 4 (52:05):
COACHING a matter of, fact we started a group last
year with the second.

Speaker 1 (52:09):
Grade of course you. Did we we we picked.

Speaker 4 (52:12):
U we had about twelve or thirteen kids that we
just started practicing in Early, october and then we had tournaments.
Throughout we played in about five or. Six they have
a lot of second grade tournaments up, north do they?

Speaker 1 (52:24):
Really?

Speaker 4 (52:25):
Oh, yeah we went. Up we went up. There we
played one one third grade tournament At slinger and then
we went up and, yeah we Were we had a
really we had a really, good really good. Group it
was it was.

Speaker 1 (52:36):
Good Coach, wallersheim how you do and you're still. Coaching
you gotta get. Backed you gotta get out of here
about five to.

Speaker 5 (52:42):
Eleven, yeah this isn't the.

Speaker 6 (52:43):
Team this is his grade school, Team nolan's great school.
Team So i'm JUST i just get to watch that.

Speaker 1 (52:47):
Team oh you? Do, okay where's that game At it's.

Speaker 5 (52:50):
Sad Rasine Lutheran, okay, yeah so yeah down.

Speaker 1 (52:54):
There, Yeah lutheran team against Another lutheran. Team we had
some great games when we were coaching out we're Seeing.

Speaker 6 (53:00):
Lutheran, yeah they're not going to have many great games this.
Year they are going to blow most teams.

Speaker 1 (53:05):
Out they're.

Speaker 5 (53:05):
Good is really.

Speaker 1 (53:07):
Good, hey, anyway it did the so the retirement. Part
but you're you're, coaching you're. Coaching, Yeah junior mart did
Junior Spartans spartan's seventh. Grade. Yeah How's nolan? Playing he's
playing well, yeah, yeah still loving. It he loves it.

Speaker 4 (53:22):
Right.

Speaker 6 (53:23):
Yeah the team he plays on today got brought. Up
their school team's good and they do it kind of
like high school where they have their eighth grade is
a combination of the best players from seventh and Eighth,
okay and then this then the rest of the kids
are LIKE US b, team sure type. Thing so he's
up on that eighth grade. Team and they've they've they

(53:44):
had some. Kids it's like there's there's there's a couple
of kids that are going to. School there this this
is happening in grade school now that like transferred in
for eighth grade like six two really?

Speaker 1 (53:57):
Four, yeah you're coming out of. RETIREMENT i all of a, Sudden,
No i'm. Not there's no breaking story here for. Sure. No,
yeah it's.

Speaker 6 (54:07):
SO i mean it's a it's a really this team
is really good and it's it's there's not a lot of,
competition and.

Speaker 1 (54:16):
Well good for. Them, Yeah, andy what do you miss?
Most you, KNOW i come a little closer to the
mic if you, CAN'T i, Know spencer's got your. LEVEL
i miss seeing the.

Speaker 4 (54:24):
KIDS i, mean you know this this fall, was you, know,
no not doing the open gym stuff and not not
seeing seeing the kids and that kind of. THING i
miss that a little. Bit BUT i, mean, Honestly i'm
pretty at peace with. IT i, MEAN I i Really
i'm really enjoying putting my head on a pillow at
night and not having them thinking about a million things
THAT i need to. Do and you, KNOW i was

(54:44):
one of those guys that you, Know i'm an old school.
Guy had a notebook by, that you, know by the
side of the, bed and anytime something came to my,
HEAD i, would you, know write it down because IF i,
didn't that'd stay up just dwelling on it or.

Speaker 1 (54:56):
Whatever and what are you guys?

Speaker 4 (54:57):
Twins but that that's WHAT I that's WHAT i, really you,
KNOW i don't miss having that just constant got to do,
this gotta do, this gotta get this. Done you know
that that has nothing to do with x as and
ols er. Basketball that just administrative kind of. Stuff and you,
know and AND i enjoyed. IT i enjoyed, it you, know,
throughout but you, KNOW i just started to wear any

(55:19):
a little.

Speaker 1 (55:19):
Bit when you don't have to do it, anymore you
don't realize how much you kind of didn't like it
all that, much but you had to do. It last
week we Had Jason schneider Inly he under you know.
WHAT i was very impressed with, him you know. WHAT
i talked to him a couple of, times like in a, hallway, hey,
coach how you, doing but never sat down and talked to.

(55:40):
Him WHAT i love about him is he understands the
history and the background and the amount of sweat equity
that you put in to this program in this community
and he wants to just continue that and he gets.
IT i was really impressed with, him And Cole orbin
was what a nice young guy that.

Speaker 4 (55:58):
IS i think get kids that we have in our
program that that THAT i. Missed but but as far
As jason, GOES i mean he was with me for
nine ten, years AND i mean talk about, loyal talk
about someone that you know and and you know he
he's the right man for the. Job, yeah he's the
right man for the. Job and he's, uh you, know
he he gets, it and he's the kids love. Him

(56:21):
the community is gonna love. Him and you, know his
wife's involved in the community with.

Speaker 1 (56:24):
She's a coach. VOLLEYBALL i don't know how they they're
like two ships passing the night, sometimes you, know LIKE.

Speaker 4 (56:30):
I, said that's. There you, know they'll make it. Work
and they got great. Kids they got, three three beautiful,
kids and uh you, know and they're they're all involved
with you, know softball and volleyball and you, know Uh
aj plays lacrosse and. Basketball SO i mean they have
a lot of stuff going. On BUT i remember, that
And i'm sure coach remembers that when you got the young,
ones you just find a way to make it happen

(56:52):
and to make it. Work and it's all about being
married to the right. Person and you, Know i'm so
grateful for my wife that allowed me to do it
as long AS i.

Speaker 1 (56:59):
Do, yeah me. Too, hey you, know what would you
say to Coach walash about coaching his son because we
both did, it and we've done shows about. It in,
fact we had cam and my Son matthew in AND
i learned a lot in that. SHOW i. Did and
there are THINGS i did correctly and THINGS i did horribly,
wrong and AND i WOULD i. Would And i've had

(57:22):
this conversation With paul about leave it in the, car,
right leave it once you get to the kitchen. Table
you're his, father not his. Coach what what advice would
you give?

Speaker 4 (57:31):
Him you, KNOW i think that you, know it's as
much as there were some, ISSUES i mean it, was
it was. AWESOME i, MEAN i don't you, KNOW i
don't regret any of it and not having you, KNOW
i would never SAY i WISH i would have never
had to do, it but it. Was, yeah LIKE i,
said there's some challenging. Times there was some challenging. TIMES

(57:52):
i just you know WHAT i always said To, cam
and it was A Dick bennett. QUOTE i, mean he,
said you either better be the best or the, worst
because if you're in the, middle that's where a lot
of the problems. Are, yeah you, know kind of motivated
him to, say if you want to be the you,
know if you want to avoid some of the, problems
because when you're you, know you're the, best there's no
question about. It and when you're the, worst you're sitting
down there and just being a part of. It but

(58:13):
when you're in the, middle that's when people, say you,
know he's not that good or. Whatever so, so SO
i tried to Motivate cam to you, know and he
took it to heart and you, know really worked his tail.

Speaker 1 (58:22):
Off he would go and get two hundred shots up
a Day, christmas, right he said he would do it.
All and he had a he had a key to
a gym and with a shooting him and he would
go do it by. Himself and and the fact that
he had that just that love of the, game and
and and maybe that quote of you either have to

(58:43):
be the best or the, worst because somewhere in the
middle is not going to. Work, matthew who played at
me or an athlete. Did he wasn't going in the
gym every day to get two hundred shots. Up AND
i don't know Where nolan is because he's a multi
sport athletes baseball, kid.

Speaker 6 (58:57):
Right he's just he's done With baseball's he was a
good baseball he.

Speaker 5 (59:01):
WAS i mean he was. Shortstop, yeah that was that
Was camera's.

Speaker 4 (59:04):
Favorite, yeah not. Favorite he was the best at Base.

Speaker 5 (59:07):
That's WHAT i really.

Speaker 1 (59:08):
Mean he was short.

Speaker 5 (59:10):
Stop batton fourth or you, know fourth on the.

Speaker 6 (59:12):
Team as the coach comes times over the, FENCE i
think the whole team. Is you, know it's The Greendale
select team and you got to you gotta have enough
kids in each age.

Speaker 5 (59:22):
Group so but, yeah he had a really, good really good.

Speaker 1 (59:26):
Year so he may he just said when he gets
the hips getting in the.

Speaker 6 (59:31):
Way every time he was out in the baseball, diamond he's,
Like i'm not in the gym shooting shots as.

Speaker 4 (59:35):
He's sitting out standing out no, fields shagging balls like,
this what are you? Doing and he's.

Speaker 1 (59:39):
Not he played a little flag, football but he's not
a football, kid, Right.

Speaker 6 (59:43):
No, NO i think you, KNOW i could see him
maybe considering playing for that group OF i.

Speaker 1 (59:49):
WAS i was on the sidelines When cam got hurt
in a in A, Andy you're that's the same look
that you had. Then and it was a, Scrimmage, no it.

Speaker 4 (59:59):
Was it was it was Against. Falls it was A falls.

Speaker 1 (01:00:02):
Game, yeah, boy why WAS i? There?

Speaker 4 (01:00:05):
Then it might have been A friday night. Game it
was The falls were both they were both good teams
at the, Time so maybe you were.

Speaker 1 (01:00:12):
There, No i'd see WHEN i tell the, STORY i
thought it was during that. Scrimmage it was that The
falls believing all, right well you know my, MEMORY i.
DON'T i don't know my. Nephew, Yeah andy was there
and he, was, man just the worst for.

Speaker 4 (01:00:27):
You it was it still. Is was his senior, year senior,
year Senior how much did he miss he? Missed he
did not play a senior year.

Speaker 1 (01:00:35):
At all at. All and how many points in his
Career he was like fourteen, fifteen just under fifteen hundred
in his career and he didn't play senior. Year that
that part of. It oh, man oh, man you were
in the, field remember that, Now, yeah in the fetal.

Speaker 4 (01:00:55):
Position, Yeah i'm still not over.

Speaker 1 (01:00:57):
That so you, know a lot has changed in high
school basketball over the years in your world out At
Sussex hampleton and you you coached At aarrawhead for a little,
while and then and you've been At. Hamilton four hundred
and forty six, WINS a lot of, wins, man a
lot of is that to the right number't even five?

(01:01:19):
Seventeen for the guys sitting in between, Us what do
you think has been the biggest part of the. CHANGE i, watched,
LIKE i went out last night and Watched slinger play
and you, know defensively they really get after. It but,
Well i'll tell you the three point shot has changed.
It there's a lot of things that have. Changed and

(01:01:39):
WHERE i was, sitting, look they were up twenty six to,
ONE i think to twenty four to, one and there
were still comments from the section THAT i was in
about you, know why why aren't you playing? There or
why don't you get the ball?

Speaker 6 (01:01:55):
Here or?

Speaker 1 (01:01:55):
What AND i, thought Holy, COLE.

Speaker 6 (01:01:57):
I mean that hasn't that it's always Been WHEN i
think that's always been you're your point about the three point,
SHOT i mean that that completely changed the. Game, Absolutely
it completely changes because it's not kids. Now it's a
lot about how much are you getting in the gym

(01:02:18):
and and and not it's about skill, development not just
playing LIKE.

Speaker 1 (01:02:23):
I feel like.

Speaker 6 (01:02:24):
It it changed it to a little bit like, baseball
like youth, Baseball like it costs money now to get
in the, gym get, skill skill development, stuff and that
it's turned the game has moved more suburban than it has.

Speaker 1 (01:02:42):
City and WHEN i talked about the SECTION i was,
in it. WASN'T i don't think it was parents and.
FAMILY i think it was. Hangers you, know guys that
hang hang, around guys that might you know that that
that might go to A DIVISION i school and they could, say,
OH I i put him through some drill stuff like,
That and that for me is different that that really

(01:03:05):
is because everybody put being able to go on on
the website and, go, HEY i played two years of
high school. BASKETBALL i could really train your kids really
well in skilled. Development and and so that's WHERE i
was going with with. That more than the, fans parents
and uncles and. Grandparents we we've heard that for you, know,
forever AND i get THAT i. Do it's very. Passionate

(01:03:28):
they're very passionate about their kids and stuff like. That,
andy how about for you THAT i think that that
three point shot it changed what we look.

Speaker 4 (01:03:36):
At. Yeah. Absolutely WHEN i first got To, HAMILTON i,
mean you, know our skill level WAS i mean it
had to. IMPROVE i mean we you, know we we
worked a lot with You Forest, Large, yeah brought him
in and did those kind of. Things AND i mean
when we first, STARTED i mean we when we would
have to play a city, SCHOOL i would just like
make a sign of the cross and say please let's

(01:03:58):
get it over half. Court AND i remember Playing Jimmy
gaze always you, always you, knew our scrimmage with them
in that and just destroy. US i mean just kind
of like when you when we played With cam and
and then as years went on and all of a
sudden we, started you, know getting better with our skill,
level and you, KNOW i MEAN i remember winning some
games thirty, two thirty.

Speaker 1 (01:04:16):
Five you, know, yeah you know.

Speaker 4 (01:04:18):
TWO i MEAN i, mean just like you, know just
low scoring games and just grind it out and just
try to take possession. Basketball but as we started getting
our skill level, IMPROVED i mean you know that that
was a big. Difference and you, know three point. Shot you,
know you, know part of your skill development is you're
shooting and that kind of, stuff and we got to
the point where we could really compete against city schools

(01:04:39):
and enjoyed it at the time because we would their,
pressure we'd make them pay because we could handle. It
and SO i mean, that you, know that was the biggest.
Change it's just how how these kids are doing all
these things and hiring.

Speaker 1 (01:04:51):
You know and suffers the video but like they're paying
people to come video and put. Highlight, yeah that's for.

Speaker 6 (01:05:01):
Me i'm coaching last year Junior spartan, team sixth grade.
Team kids out there with a.

Speaker 5 (01:05:09):
MICROPHONE i don't know. IT i don't know what he's
got up. Remote he's miked up in his dad's videoing.

Speaker 6 (01:05:17):
And like he's acting, unusual like like WHEN i take
him out of the game or or yell at him
because he's not doing something right because he's like he's,
shooting he's like and then WELL i found that out.

Speaker 5 (01:05:29):
And that was the last game he played with.

Speaker 1 (01:05:31):
Us, YEAH i know that that stuff that the changes
to all that we're gonna get to a break and.
Anything are you hearing anything in the with the nil?
Thing And paul had said to, me we talked about
it six months ago and he, Said, LOOK i don't
think it's gonna be that big of a. DEAL i
don't you, know it's gonna be open for some, people
BUT i don't think it's going to AFFECT i haven't

(01:05:53):
heard good or bad any of. It there's one kid
doing an iron jock real, football right, yeah but other than,
that LIKE i haven't heard have you seen or heard
any of?

Speaker 4 (01:06:04):
It BUT i, Did LIKE i said, THAT i, mean
when that came, up it was kind of LIKE i
just didn't know IF i wanted to have to. DEAL
i didn't know where it was going to go or
how quick it was going to. Go but that, that you,
know those are the kind of changes, that you, know
just kind of made me start thinking about if this
is WHAT i wanted to continue worrying about as nil.

Speaker 1 (01:06:24):
Deals and did you know the moment where you made
the Decision, okay it's it's, Hey i've made the. Decision
i've stepping, away let me sleep on it one more,
night and then going to talk to the athletic. Director
do you remember that, Moment, Well.

Speaker 4 (01:06:37):
I'll tell you right. Now when When cam got the
job At, Kimberly, yeah that was when it started to
pop in my head, thinking you, know what is you,
know so that that that made it Because i'll be
honest with, you there was a part of me that
maybe thought he'd go back To hamilton IF i ever stepped,
down and you, know there was no teaching openings or
anything like. That SO i so had he not gone To,

(01:06:59):
kimberly MAYBE i might, have you, know continue to you,
know just because it was easy for me to you,
know be a part of. Him. Surely now it's an
hour and a half And i'm just really excited for

SON i think he's really good and Those i'm sure
those guys have been playing together. Forever and he's a
really good. Coach he runs a lot of good stuff
and that wasn't on the schedule. Originally that's a really
tough game for a new coach with the new system
because it's not like we're With andy. Situation he has
an assistant coach who was there for ten. Years they're
kind of just rolling right into. It this is a

(01:11:02):
whole new, coach a whole new, SYSTEM.

Speaker 5 (01:11:05):
A, good good.

Speaker 6 (01:11:06):
Guy did a great job At, Heritage Christian demante buying. Them,
yes did a great job At, Heritage. CHRISTIAN i like
him a. LOT i was part of the interview committee
and hiring, committee.

Speaker 5 (01:11:17):
So i'm A i'm a big.

Speaker 6 (01:11:18):
Fan he spends a ton of time with the, program
in the, gym with the, kids and so good for.

Speaker 5 (01:11:23):
Him just a matter of.

Speaker 1 (01:11:23):
Time, YEAH i, HEAR i hear nothing about good things about. Him,
yeah so that's. Awesome in, Fact Ben haley Coaching, mespers
said they may have gotten the best coach in our
conference over To Martin luther And haley thought the world of.
Him Hey, andy how are you walking into that? Gym
did you did you take? Someone it was.

Speaker 4 (01:11:42):
ABSOLUTELY i certainly didn't want to take away From jason
and his, staff AND i didn't want to be the center,
attention AND i just kind of wanted to sneak in
and just, yeah WELL i just LIKE i, said it.
Was that was kind of, nerving just BECAUSE i just
didn't want it to be about. ME i wanted to
be About. JASON I. UH i did get a. PASS

(01:12:07):
i did get past.

Speaker 1 (01:12:08):
The paid to get Into hamilton basketball AND i.

Speaker 4 (01:12:13):
WENT i went with With Josh, king who also stepped
down because he was with me for as long As jason,
was and he And jason wanted him to come, back
AND i wanted him to come. Back but they have four.
Girls uh and uh it was and he's coaching his
his fifth grade, daughter and.

Speaker 1 (01:12:30):
You sit up in the stands With Brian allenson or who's,
NO i don't know If brian was.

Speaker 4 (01:12:34):
THERE i don't. KNOW I i just it was at
wash The south AND i went in AND i saw
some of the parents and that was pretty nice and
spoke with them a little bit and wanted to talk
To jason, afterwards but they it was a tough loss
for him because they played so well in the first
half and and then he just let it slip. Away
but they're so. Young he starts a freshman point, guard
he starts a. Sophomore there are two there are two
league scorers were sophomores and then the freshman point. Guard

(01:12:56):
and they have two. Seniors but they're going to rely
heavily and there in their.

Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
Class he made a, comment he, SAID i think we'll
be better here at the end of the.

Speaker 4 (01:13:03):
Year. Oh, absolutely we'll be better at the end of the.

Speaker 1 (01:13:05):
Year And Coach, wallace him AND i used to talk
about that a lot that we always thought the best
coach teams were the ones that were playing the best
at the end of the. Year that they haven't, lost you,
know kids didn't haven't stopped listening to. Them they're putting
new stuff.

Speaker 4 (01:13:18):
IN i can tell you right now with the kids
THAT i know they're gonna they're buying. It AND i
just talked To jason this. Morning they got the youth
tournament going. ON i stopped to watch the other third
grade teams play this, morning and, uh, yeah he's really
scouting OR i just want to see how good they.
Are because we got we got we got three third grade,

(01:13:39):
teams so they split them up they split them all,
up AND i just wanted to check them out and
see how they're. Doing they, yeah they won. Big they
be a New berlin. Team but but but, NO I
i just LIKE i, SAID I i plan to go
to a, few but you, know With cameron playing To
i'll probably you, know he'll trump, them you, know trump
me and going.

Speaker 1 (01:13:55):
There so do you think it'll be harder for you
to go to a home?

Speaker 4 (01:13:58):
Game that's WHY i want The south game because because
they were supposed to go play. Home and, YEAH i
just LIKE i, SAID I i just don't want to
take it. Away AND i don't WANT i don't want.
TO i don't WANT i don't want to be. THERE
i don't want people, to you, know Think i'm there
To i'm there at the Sports. Jason and that's Why
i'm so happy he got, it because that keeps me
a little closer to the. Program we, Talked we talk,
regularly and, UH i JUST i absolutely love the fact

(01:14:21):
that he got the.

Speaker 1 (01:14:21):
Job did you have anything to? Do did were you
part of the hiring any of?

Speaker 4 (01:14:26):
IT i offered to you, know help out or. Whatever and,
no it's a new, ADMINISTRATION i, mean and that's another reason.
TOO i Mean ghazi, LEFT i had got my whole
career At, HAMILTON i had the SAME A. D i'm
telling you right, now And i'll tell you right now
my gods was one of the. Best he was and
he Was he's, always he was, always But i'll tell

(01:14:49):
you right, now he was he'd have your. BACK i,
mean he was good.

Speaker 6 (01:14:54):
PEOPLE i did early in my career take that for.
GRANTED i had a great A, d a great, principal
And i'd go to THE bca stuff And i'd hear, Coaches, oh,
Man i'm not GOING i don't get support from my
idea or.

Speaker 5 (01:15:06):
Principal i'm, Like.

Speaker 6 (01:15:07):
And then we had a little switch at At dominican
one year where the principal and the president changed and
it was completely not support.

Speaker 1 (01:15:18):
And you, yeah and then and then then Then i'm, like,
ah and then and then doctor.

Speaker 5 (01:15:23):
It can change.

Speaker 1 (01:15:24):
Overnight, yeah but but just let me stay.

Speaker 4 (01:15:26):
HERE i, mean we hired a new EIGHTY i was
on the committee and great, guy great, community AND i
just LIKE i told my, WIFE i, SAID i just
didn't know IF i wanted to spend three years trying
to build a. Relationship And i'm getting you, know we're
getting older, now and it's it's just AND i, thought
what a great time for someone anew to come in
and kind of build it LIKE i. Did hopefully he'll
stick around health.

Speaker 1 (01:15:47):
Wise you're doing. Good you look? Great YEAH i.

Speaker 4 (01:15:49):
Am and you know that was just Scare, yeah it.

Speaker 1 (01:15:52):
Was but it's a.

Speaker 4 (01:15:53):
Long time, ago, THOUGH i mean think about, it it's
been it's been quite some. Time eight, years oh, man spent.

Speaker 1 (01:15:59):
Years, really why DO i remember it like it was.
Yesterday that's Scared. Andy that's scared. That the coaching community
and the referee. Community that's that scared a lot of.

Speaker 4 (01:16:10):
Us i'm laying in the bed And i'm, like, yeah
it scared me, too and it kind of scared me.
STRAIGHT i, mean it was the best thing that ever
happened to me from the standpoint of you, KNOW i
dropped about fifty pounds And i've, been you, know trying
to keep it off and you, know change the your whole.
Lifestyle And i'm GLAD i. Have you, KNOW i got
ten grandkids, now AND i don't want to be wrong for.

Speaker 1 (01:16:30):
Six, yeah WELL.

Speaker 5 (01:16:33):
I got three three kids thirteen and. Nine.

Speaker 1 (01:16:38):
Man, yeah and beautiful. Kids by the. WAY i, LOOK
i can tell you that my, favorite Like i've known
your kids since they were, born my. Favorite and it
wasn't a good, time, right it was a horrible time
out At Holy, hill and so you know Where i'm.
Going but Young brooklyn took my hand and walked to

(01:17:00):
me around and she she introduced, me showed me, stuff
and she was probably three my mom's funeral. Funeral, yeah
AND i you, know but she was. UNBELIEVABLE i, thought,
well she's she's she's getting, it, man she's getting.

Speaker 4 (01:17:13):
It.

Speaker 1 (01:17:14):
Hey AND i teed this up at the end of
the last. Segment but But, Paul i'm gonna start with.
You you're you're you're in your, mind best win and hardest
loss of your. Career and again you had five hundred
and seventeen. Wins So i'm asking a big ask. Here
but when you think back your your your biggest, win our,
best you, know, favorite and then toughest.

Speaker 6 (01:17:36):
Loss i'll go backwards because it's always easier to. Remember
the losses always seemed more impactful than any big, win,
Right and it's still it's still that two thousand and
Two osberg.

Speaker 1 (01:17:46):
Game, man we're getting you know What my producer, is,
uh he's a Colder Blue. Bomber but they're in the
conference and he's, like, yeah you got to get the
usper coach to come down and have this. Time AND i.
Am i'm going to reach out to him and, see
you played him.

Speaker 5 (01:18:00):
The last the last two. Years it was good getting
caught up with.

Speaker 1 (01:18:02):
Them, yeah AND i need to get over it BECAUSE
i still don't want.

Speaker 5 (01:18:05):
To he is a really good.

Speaker 1 (01:18:07):
Guy, yeah that game To Derek Wimber Ray. NICKSON i
saw him at the w B y shootout last year
and they neither one has watched the pill and they
don't want. To they don't want any part of that.
Thing AND i agree with, you that was the.

Speaker 6 (01:18:20):
Toughest, well, YEAH i mean there's so that that for,
sure BECAUSE i mean, undefeated you, know hadn't won a
w I a state championship yet we're In division. Three
we had Beat king at AT i think that was
arena at The Arena Martin Luther King. Events we WE i,

(01:18:41):
mean we were we were really. Good and, yeah, yeah
so so THAT i mean great when the that the
ninety eight state championship game Against Appleton xavier after we
graduated all those, Guys, yeah and we were down by
about ten or eleven show early in the second half
and Then Cody starr And cody And Arcus Showtime johnson

(01:19:03):
And Brandon witt And Derek berger was on that. Team
that was an amazing win for us to win a state.

Speaker 5 (01:19:11):
CHAMPIONSHIP i was at that.

Speaker 1 (01:19:12):
Game wasn't on your, staff BUT i was at that,
game AND i wondered if that would be the one
and and, look they were really. Good they were you know. Savior,
yes they were really. Good AND i don't think a
lot of people gave you guys much of a. Chance
Cody starr had a lot of guys and man he
played and.

Speaker 4 (01:19:31):
That was At.

Speaker 1 (01:19:31):
Swinsky that was the name of the.

Speaker 6 (01:19:33):
KID i, mean he was just killing us in the
first half and he Was he's like six' Five and cody's.
Five ten and at halftime, HE SAYS i i want to,
cover him and he shut him down in the. Second
half so that, that one. You know and in two thousand,
and five our two thousand and five Team Beat madison

(01:19:55):
Memorial with wesley Math With wes matthews WITH. J r
blount and we went undefeated. That year that was a
that was a. Great win dur in the middle of
THE season i.

Speaker 1 (01:20:03):
Got a bunch of text messages from. Him yesterday he
texted me they're getting ready To play perdue today at
eleven o'clock and, he's, like hey you've got the two Boys.
From slinger TELL them i want them.

Speaker 4 (01:20:14):
As.

Speaker 1 (01:20:15):
Cyclones man, i'm like how do? YOU know i mean
he puts You in indiana getting ready To. Play perdue, he,
GOES yeah i mean take a.

Speaker 6 (01:20:22):
Step out he texted Me on thanksgiving with one of
the most. Heartwarming messages he's just a.

Speaker 1 (01:20:27):
Great guy he is a. Great. Guy yeah, for me
together YOU and i maybe the best for ME when i,
think back was that last Year Beating saint catharines Sectional
semis THAT that.

Speaker 6 (01:20:40):
I was, sae LIKE if i compart my mentalize it
into the, early years the, middle years and the. Late
years that win It's at Prairie Against. Saint catherine's That,
was god that.

Speaker 1 (01:20:52):
Was, fun yeah that was, Really FUN. Andy serroni but
four hundred and forty, six wins so that's a lot to.
Choose from was it easier for YOU when i TOLD
you i was going to ask, you this to pick
the hardest loss or the? Greatest?

Speaker 4 (01:21:06):
Win well were there were two of the hardest losses.
WERE recently i mean when we went to state in
two seventeen and, we were, you know, pretty young and
came back the next year and, you know won, our conference,
beat everybody and lost in the sectional finals against and then,
you know that's the YEAR the wi decided that it
would be a good idea to switch up put all

(01:21:27):
the best teams in ONE exentional, i mean because We
were north and then they ended up putting us with,
You Know, brookfille central who was preseason NUMBER two i think,
it was and you know we were preseason three, or
whatever and, you, know, so yeah and so we had
beaten them twice yere in the, regular season had a
seven point lead and then we ended up. Losing overtime
that was that was a. Tough one that was a.

(01:21:47):
Tough one and then our second one was the following
YEAR when covid. Beat, US yeah I mean i think that,
you know we were to be ready to tee up
Again against.

Speaker 1 (01:21:58):
That was, twenty. TWENTY right i wondered If the homestead
one when it, came in that was a REALLY difficult i.
Did that we did that game live and that's.

Speaker 4 (01:22:08):
Those those were sectional final league kind, of things and
then that one was a heartbreaker just because of that
group of kids. WE had, I mean ak Was Just
aiden kannopp was just amazing. Young MAN and i mean
we battled back and just had a chance and just
did not have it. BE settled i mean we, just yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:22:26):
It was there were some things that happened down the
stretch of that one that we can we could. Talk
ABOUT but i and what about the best win? For
you the?

Speaker 4 (01:22:34):
BEST win, I mean i think it was probably our
run in twenty seventeen when we, you know we had
to go to our, FIRST game, i mean we had
to go travel our, second game. Regional finals we had
to play, against McDonald's, you know playing IN. The nfl
and who was the receiver that Played. At wisconsin he's
IN the nfl now to a little he Played at

(01:22:56):
wisconsin Transfer. To, florida, yeah, yeah, yeah, Yeah, yeah yeah.
That's it. That's, it, so yeah they were he was.
A freshman mary.

Speaker 1 (01:23:05):
McDonald was, Yeah McDonald oh, my lord.

Speaker 4 (01:23:08):
And we're playing and you know, we're starting, you know
two freshmen and. THREE sophomores i mean it, was, like
yeah then we Go to bayport and we, beat them
and they're the number, one seed and then We Played
kettle moraine who just destroyed Us over christmas and came
back and won that game to Get to madison and
that was the first time since the seventies or early Eighties.

(01:23:29):
For hamilton, so yeah so that, little run that was a.
Good run and the next one was Probably When luther
smith's was a senior and we won. The conference we
had to Win At brookfield central and uh we ended
up winning, that night playing, really well and uh.

Speaker 1 (01:23:45):
That, was hey there's some there's some coaches in. That
conference they tell me.

Speaker 4 (01:23:49):
About it and then, and then like, you said the
department on we had some good wins when we were
trying to get over. THE hump, i MEAN when i first,
got there. We won we were always at the bottom,
looking out and our goal was to get in, number
half not alone get a. Conference championship and once we
started making making uh you know. SOME runs, i mean
we had some great. Game winners, You know cam hit
a couple when We Played brooks central when it were

(01:24:11):
really good they Went, to state we upset them at,
their place and, so yeah there was there's a lot.
Of them.

Speaker 1 (01:24:16):
We got we got to get through, a, break, boys
man we. Could do we literally could do three more
hours and maybe not take any Breaks because i've got
a zillion questions for. You guys it's it was such
a pleasure to be Part Of coach. Wallersheim STAFF and
i say it on this AIR and I and i,
believe IT and I and i truly. MEAN this i
would throw myself in front of a bus to. Save

(01:24:37):
you and and being your assistant Coach, WAS look i
still talk about things that have happened and and and how.
You were look from where you were at, the beginning
when YOU and i coached together to where we were at,
the end AND when i told you and when we
sat in a RESTAURANT when i Was leaving dominican, and
say coach ectally knows You're the you're the Best coach

(01:24:59):

Gabe Ortiz becomes a third-highest ranking officer in all of Texas while his younger brother Larry climbs the ranks in Puro Tango Blast, a notorious Texas Prison gang. Gabe doesn’t know all the details of his brother’s nefarious dealings, and he’s made a point not to ask, to protect their relationship.
