Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is just one of those tough ones, and I'm
just glad you're here. I the host of this show,
am just applauding you for showing up today.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
It was tough for us to show up, but this
is what you do.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
You get hit in the mouth in life, and you
show up, you come back, you try and get better.
We're gonna do that on the podcast tonight. We're gonna
try and decipher what happened on Saturday. Then we're gonna
move on.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Thank you for being here, for supporting the show, the brand.
Let's have a day. Let's go maybe an all time
(00:53):
short episode here. Welcome to the wash Up walk Ons
thought you.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Know Grant actually before we hopped in, keV just hopped
in literally hasn't said a word. We hit We We're
trying to get this thing done in and out tonight,
just like Michigan State was on us on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Tough one. keV. Welcome to the show. Glad you're here.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
I can't wait for an unbelievable twenty to thirty minutes
that we're about to have with you. Right, it's gonna
be a great recap podcast.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Do you remember I would defense playing this poorly nope.
Do you remember? Do you remember and I would defense
tackling this poorly?
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Nope, I do not.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
I was sitting there thinking today, I was writing some
notes down on the little script outline that I have
on Google Google Docs that I kind of keep on
the side here while we record, and I'm trying to
come up with in my head. And I know some
of the reporters beat writers tweeted this out their thoughts
on you know, worst tackling performance or worst defensive performance.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Since xyz whatever last night.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
But in my head, subjectively, I was trying to think,
and I quite honestly thought it might be the Minnesota
game that we played in twin fourteen.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
It's up there.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
I mean, I know we got shlacked by Penn State, but.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
In sixteen Ohio State a couple of years ago, Tennessee
in the the first like when we played them back
in fourteen. Honestly didn't play very great against them last
year either.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
It's a weird one because.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
In the game, yeah, I mean go ahead, in the
games that we get beat and I'm sort of referencing here,
they're absolute beatings. They're they're not even close. They're not games.
And this game was twenty five to twenty in the
fourth quarter, maybe late third quarter, fourth quarter. So this
(02:48):
is a weird, sort of odd feeling because it's a
game that, quite literally, if one thing goes the right way,
this game had the potential to finish twenty seven to
twenty five or some weird score. And they score on
like twelve of their drives because they're just punching together
field goals with this Kim guy. Who Hey, congratulations, Bud.
We just gave you your gros a game. You're welcome,
(03:09):
and we were still somehow in it, but it just
felt so bad. The tackling is awful. I've got some
positives and some negatives that I wrote down.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
There's not a lot of positives.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
I'll be honest, like I you know, Restaking continues his
punting performance four for forty six average. We love that
that continues to climb him up there, and the punts
that we needed and had were good out of him. Unfortunately,
the defense just couldn't stop anything after we reset that
field position. Stevens is absolutely dialed. He did miss the
fifty eight yarder, granted it's a fifty eight yarder, and
(03:46):
he was you know, left to right there's a lot
of there's a lot of over fifty eight yards of distance.
It's razor thin the margin and he was just outside
the post. There had all of the leg.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, grow from sixty five right six.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Sixty five for sure it might have pushed seventy Like.
Speaker 5 (04:06):
The should we have kicked the field goal versus Iowa
State instead of throwing the heel marry?
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Absolutely, yes, yes, we should have. Uh and it's would
have been. I didn't know he had that kind of distance.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
And I've been watching him probably close, more closely than
most people. Obviously last week got some play when he
absolutely nuked somebody in the face in the front row.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
That was funny. I don't think people.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Understand the distance involved in that. That has to go
out the back of the end zone. A kick to
the goal line is sixty five yards seventy halfway into
the end zone, seventy five back of the end zone.
Drew Stevens is kicking it like eighty plus yards on kickoffs.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
And I've been sort of watching this. I'm like, dude,
this kid's let He has gotten so much stronger.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
Broadcast said he's added thirty five pounds of muscle.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
I love when they say that Kevi, I mean he
looks strong.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
I mean he looks big.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
He's definitely strong. He didn't have thirty five pounds of muscle.
You and I both know that.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
But he's added a ton of strength and a ton
of good.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Body weight to him, and maybe more than anything, a
ton of great confidence.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Mentally, he's dialed. Even though he missed the fifty.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
Eight yarder, I think he got one later, maybe one
or two later in the game, So you.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Know, specialists are good.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
I would even say kickoff, kick return, and punt return
are doing good things. I would say kickoff is kickoff
and kick return. I mean Weichen is just like Razor
thin close to breaking one. Every time he touches the ball.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
You could tell every time he gets up he's like, God,
dang it, I'm just like that close.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
I would say they are close to the standard of
IO special teams.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Punt our gunners are not.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
Our gunners have to be better at finding the ball,
and maybe that was a thing that could You know,
a lot of people have talked about Cooper Ejen spoiling
Us over the last couple of years with how good
he was and just how natural of an athlete and
football player he was, And maybe that's the case if
if you wanted to describe it that way or use
that way to sort of lay out the situation, so
(06:06):
be it. These gunners are in position, they are down
the field, they are not finding the ball and getting
in position to get in front of it, and it
is going in the end zone too many times.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Not an easy job, but they're there. They've done the work.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
They just have to do the last five percent like
it's it's really frustrating. And then the last couple of
good things they put on there is Caleb's still a dog.
He rakes off a seventy five yard touchdown when we
needed it most. But he really wasn't able to be
seen all day because our first and second levels got
bullied by Michigan State. It looked like it looked like
(06:46):
they were coming off a bye week, and it looked
like we had just stepped off the bus. And then,
to be honest, and this is sort of hard to see,
especially through last night, but I really like what our
wide receiver talent looks like.
Speaker 5 (06:58):
Yeah, yeah, in the next you know, it's the most
positive it's been in years.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
I'd say, Yeah, Reesevan had a room to grow too.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Yeah, Reese had his best game since since Week one
against Illinois State. Obviously an amazing touchdown catch after a
catch earlier in the drive that really it was his drive.
I think Seth Seth Anderson is good. I think Jacob
Gill is good. I think uh, I think Dayton Howard
and Jerriet Bowie, I think they're I think we've got
a decent core once we have our playbook in and
(07:26):
we can roll.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Those are the only positives.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
I'll pull out one more.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
It's you know, we're down twelve, nothing going at halftime
and can't stop him on defense, can't get anything going
on offense, and we do come out on offense and
go touchdown, touchdown, back to back drives, right, which which
is positive ste I mean, keeps us in the game,
even though it's still like we we go touchdown. It's like, Okay,
first half was all Michigan State couldn't do anything right,
(07:55):
and we're down five points.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Now.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
Yeah, granted, the very next drive we let up a
nine play, seventy five yard drive and it's like, Okay,
it feels like we're back out of it, and.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Then the offense responds again. So I mean you can.
You can.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
That's a good thing to see. Right years past, you're
down twelve nothing at halftime, you're like, there's no chance. Yeah,
oh we pull off one touchdown, drive, great, we give
another one. You're like, okay, you're back in the pit
of despair. Is like, we have no ability to come back.
I like to see the offense punch back today.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
And I would say, you're right, this is a good
pull from you, and sort of in general, you might
just you might just call this Tim Lester's adjustments and
response with play calling and effort, because if players still
have to go out and execute those plays, play hard respond.
Our response offensively has been very good most games this year,
(08:50):
or or just our second half, third quarter, specifically that
Minnesota game, this game, we come out hot in.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
The third quarter.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
It's been really good. So I like the adjustments that
our team has been able to make. The issue in
this one is the bend don't break defense. Just simply broke,
and it broke by bending too much. If you really
want to dial in that analogy, you can only you
can only bend so much before like you're kind of bent.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
It's been bent, and I don't I don't.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Really have a lot to say about this, Kevin, other
than there's a there's a clear liability at corner. We
do not know who, we do not have a solid
second corner behind Jamari Harris Castro being out hurt a
little bit, I think, and kind of all around. I'm
not I'm not even going to single people out or
(09:43):
say that some people did good. It was just an
all around defensive effort of just poor tackling yesterday, one
that I have not seen in years.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (09:50):
No, I mean, I don't think anyone can really hang
their head on the defensive side of the ball or anything.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
They really did well.
Speaker 5 (09:56):
You know, we talked about a few times this year,
like how we've and kind of blessed at with the
lack of injuries so far this year. I guess we
really didn't know how blessed we were up until this point,
because apparently we are hurting for death, especially in the
defensive back end.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
It's tough to watch them run out t J Hall
and then who's our other guy?
Speaker 2 (10:22):
And then.
Speaker 5 (10:25):
Who it was Jami on one side and TJ and
then on TJ did he get hurt at some point
in the game, or like they didn't really.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Talk maybe it looked like it.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Nestor was out there, and then I think we have
a third guy on that side too, right, who am
I missing?
Speaker 5 (10:39):
Uh So, yeah, Castro was out and so we had
Engineer playing, and then he came out about halfway through
the game too.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
I mean, we're just hurting.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Lumer's playing like it's just it's.
Speaker 5 (10:49):
Uh no, I mean it's like those are not there,
those guys natural positions.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
And and they're just not They're not ready.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
They're not they're not ready.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
And I say, I don't know his last name is
marsh Maybe the receiver. They're good receiver.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
He made that very clear on the one on one
on the outside towards the end of the game, there
broke our guy.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
I think it was a nastairport. I mean, I understand,
but I've been there.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Demon Paul Powell made me look like an absolute wacky,
wavy inflatable tube man and practice on punt return or
punt coverage drill one day.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
But you know, it's just tough day, and so we
have a liability there.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Our linebackers are good, our defensive line is good. But
I mean even them yesterday, they did not have good games.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
We were out physical on the defensive side of the ball, and.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
It almost looked like and I know, Grant, you talked
about you were worried. You talked about this, this this
quarterback who clearly has some sort of magic power because
he moves almost like in a slow fluid motion and
no one can touch him. I'm just confused, Like he
he doesn't look that fast, just he doesn't. He's he
is slippery, and he's a great athlete, and he can
(12:03):
make some great throws. And I saw exactly what you
were saying last week when we talked about this g bone.
You know, I'm not even gonna really say that he
beat us. We just beat ourselves. We tell me if
I'm wrong, Kevin. But generally, when you swarm tackle, first
guy to the ball wraps up and stops them. The
next guy goes for the ball if you have an opportunity.
(12:26):
Our first guy to the ball too often right now
is just trying to punch it out and they're not
wrapping up.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
I'm confused. I don't know what's going on.
Speaker 5 (12:36):
I thought I saw a lot a lot of guys diving,
diving at length, not bringing not you know, striking the trusts,
running through tackles. It just it's just ugly bad fundamental football,
and that and Iowa cannot win.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
You're not playing good fundamental.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
No, when you're when you're not the most talented team, which,
to be honest, maybe is less of an excuse now
than it used to be with us, because this this
team actually does have, when you look at it on paper,
more talent than it used to.
Speaker 5 (13:04):
I mean, so this is this is the game on
paper that yeah, i was supposed to win, right, Sure,
this isn't the game where you get to play the
talent excuse, I mean no, Yeah, a couple of injuries
on the defensive side of the ball, and you were
obviously hurting after that.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Ohio State's the game where you're like, well they were
just better.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Yeah, exactly. You don't. You don't walk out of card
versus Michigan State. Not at this point in their program.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
No, And I think you know, from what I've heard
about that coach and what I've seen in his interviews,
I actually really like him, very respectful of Iowa this
week in the program, and I liked his answers when
they interviewed him and stuff, and he seems like a
good guy. They probably hired him for a reason, and
maybe Michigan State is better than.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
We thought they were.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
Right. They they had a very tough last couple of
weeks before their bye week, playing organ in Ohio State,
no doubt, but that's not a game You walk the bus,
doesn't you know, drive to the airport after that one,
and everyone's going, oh, they were just better than Like, no,
that's not The guys know that they should have.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
That's a game they should win. We'll get to the
offense in a second.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
I think the biggest glaring issue maybe, but I just
want to give a premier automotive collision of the.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Game to the Iowa fan base's ego. I mean, just
a tough one for.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
Just a tough one, just an absolute starship rocket right
to the heart of the Iowa fan base. There is
more to play for, and I think maybe this podcast
is where you'll find the best in depth analysis of
why the next five games are still important plus a
Bowl game assuming we make it. There is still important
to an i will program these Iowa players. But when
(14:48):
you're talking big picture, you know this team will sit
down at the beginning of the year and they're saying, Okay,
we want to compete for a Big Ten championship. We
want to and now they're probably saying, if we compete
for a Big Ten championship, we also want to be
in the playoff content.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Those things are gone. Yep.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
This is the game every year that hurts the most.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
And it's the game where the goals you set out
for at the beginning of the year are done out
the window. Yeah and you really, yeah, you're not playing
for a Big Ten title anymore. You're not playing for
playoff appearance now.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
And that's the one that's always hard to swallow.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
And so it's gonna be hard for that team, it's
gonna be hard for the fans. Biggest hit to the
Ego Premier Automotive collision of the game. Shout out to
them for sponsoring the heartbreak of all of Hawka Nation.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Great.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Could you pull up the betting picks real quick before
we talk about the quarterback situation, which I think is
maybe where we leave off tonight, the last thing we're.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Going to talk about.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
Unfortunately, I on a I didn't even feel good about this,
but I went four and one.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
It's good, but I didn't feel good about it just
because of the end of the the end of the day.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
Oklahoma State Friday Night kicked it off, should have beat
b Yu. Grant, I know you watched that one unbelievable game,
unbelievable play with about fourteen seconds left BYU they throw
it down the middle of the field.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Nobody can tackle a guy. He scores.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
But Oklahoma State covers nine and a half Nebraska. Let's
let's circle back on Nebraska because Kevin and I both
had them Army minus fifteen.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
They were up huge early. I believe it did cover though,
think they.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
Army covered, but it was closer. It ended up being seventeen.
I think they were up like in the twenties at
one point. Maryland. I'm telling you, man, this cross country
travel dude USC joined the Big ten to be a
six and six ball club. Maryland wins outright by one
point in uh, wherever they're wherever they play, I don't
even remember what college park Maryland college park, Maryland, capital
(16:43):
of Nordia.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
They Grant tried to shame me on this one.
Speaker 4 (16:45):
Ella, He's like, oh argosaw, No, No, it wasn't shaming.
It was I thought we were talking at the end
about putting our heads together because we agreed on, okay,
and you mentioned Maryland and then you jump to LSU,
which we didn't agree on.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
Okay, Well, the issue.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
I was on the positive side of this LSU matchup.
I think they end up actually winning by like seventeen
or something, So I'm back on track. We go four
and one, and I don't even feel good about it.
Nebraska was the one loss of the day, and it
was I mean, if you feel bad as an Iowa fan.
Speaker 5 (17:19):
Yeah, I mean I was on that one too, and
it was more so a reason, like didn't really know
if Indiana was for real or not and.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
It and they are they they're, they're, They're They're a
good football team. And they that was impressive what they did.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
I mean that was that was beyond impressive. And I
don't know if Nebraska quit.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
I was actually out training during this game sort of
around that like one o'clock time frame. Getting beat by
twenty or thirty is an ass beating. When a team
hangs fifty six on you and you score a touch
a single touchdown, that's not good.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
New New Yeah, also had the under in that game.
Speaker 5 (18:03):
Expected Nebraska has been having a pretty good defense this year,
and they just were out matched, out class.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
It didn't show up. So that's that's a miss right there.
Had Rutgers minus four and a half. They lose again.
Speaker 5 (18:18):
It was playing that cross country travel with the UCLA
was going to play a nine am game on their schedule,
but they somehow.
Speaker 3 (18:26):
They woke up, They woke up and they played. They
get the win.
Speaker 5 (18:29):
So we lose there and then had had Iowa and
obviously we know what happened there. Uh you only two
wins of the weekend were Illinois plus three and a
half in the under in that Illinois Michigan game.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
Uh, Illinois is a good football program and Michigan is
uh no longer where they want to be struggling.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
But I'm a big burt guy, big burkey love Burt. Hey.
Speaker 6 (18:55):
It's Peter Harmon, the food guru here to talk about
Gray's Gore May to go At Grays Gormete Go. We
are madly and passionately in love with three things chicken, lips, pizza,
and great food to go. We believe you want to
feed your family something great at home, but you're too
busy withd like to stop and cook. That's why we
built Gray's Gourmet to Go. So The next time you
(19:18):
need to feed the gang and you don't feel like cooking,
just come to grays Gormetigo dot com.
Speaker 7 (19:25):
This is Leopesha and I've been saying hit a deer,
call Premiere for years, but it's time for something new.
It's still where you need to go for deer divots
and door dings as well as damage dashboards. That's what
my dad Nathan's driving at and dreams about. Why not say,
when your car is dinged, be a deer and call Premiere.
I think Dad's going to love that. Premiere Automotive North
Liberty is Premiere Autobody repair shop.
Speaker 4 (19:47):
Be a deer and call Premiere Autobody in North Liberty.
They got to get in one of those bright orange
jumpsuits like he wore at Arkansas, the big red one.
They had any go one, anyone.
Speaker 1 (19:59):
Any bright color on that man is probably not his best,
uh clothing choice, but hey it is.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
What do you like the Did you like the Illinois helmets?
Speaker 2 (20:08):
You know what I actually did.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
I when I heard about the concept of it, I thought,
I don't know if that's gonna work.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
I actually thought it was kind of cool.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
I thought they were great. I didn't understand the hate
they were getting. Each one took two hours to hand paint.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
It looked good.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
Really, Yes, been working on this for weeks.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
That's insane.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
Really yeah, that's impressive. They looked they looked pretty realistic.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
That's what.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (20:33):
Like, it was like we're in the Mona Lisa on
your helmet.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
It was good.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
And so you know, so I'm fifteen fourteen, we're back
above five hundred, Kevin eighteen and twelve and one, And
that's a good that's a that's.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
A good record. That's a great record. Gary. I saw
somebody somebody mentioned that you started zero and five this Saturday.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
Well that's someone was me. I was keeping dragging.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
Yeah, I'm gonna be honest.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
We were doing from the start. As soon as I
gave out any of these pics, all the lines went
the opposite way.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
Of where they needed to go.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
Not good. Uh and just like even like.
Speaker 4 (21:02):
I post the graphic right six minutes later, Georgia Tach
announced their QBS not playing like it was just we
were doing before the game is even started. It's tough,
it was awful and it was crazy too. George Sex
still had a pretty decent chance to cover that game.
But again, it wasn't even I was expecting me. Yeah,
we went four and ten. We got absolutely throttled this weekend.
We won't to get close on most of these. It
was just it was all sorts of bad. Luckily, in
(21:23):
the afternoon, you know, we had Tennessee, which you know,
I mean, it didn't even look good for a while,
but they snuck one out there. Illinois was solid the
whole way though, but like even Maryland, they did an
onset kick to start the game. We talked about, I
think on taglines a while ago that if you get
the surprise on side, I don't know if I've ever
seen a team lose and get the surprise on side.
If you do this surprise on side and don't get it,
(21:46):
you almost immediately loose right away. So one play in
Arizona and then they just got throttled the rest of
the game. Argasas not even close. I keep picking West Virginia.
They have not even come close to covering any of
the games I have picked them, and it's been a disaster. Clemson, though,
we needed that one bad and then Virginia had a
touchdown with like a minute left garbage time, no reason
to score scored anyway, ruined my morning slate, but it
(22:08):
was it was tough out there.
Speaker 5 (22:10):
But yeah, I saw I remember checking you in, checking
in on you at one point. I think you're like
two and eight at one point.
Speaker 4 (22:16):
That sounds about right, That sounds like something's going on.
But yeah, I mean I saw some people were talking
about last week and two that apparently last week between
the NFL and college football, that it was the worst
weekend for Vegas in like twenty years, wow or something
like that in terms of like losing money. So it
was I mentioned last weekend too when we were talking
about the record stuff. I was like, I'm doing too
(22:36):
well right now. We're something bad is gonna happen here.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
Well, you're back, you're back to almost five hundred. Yeah,
we're almost bad.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
But hey, you know we terrible weekend, we're still both
five hundred somehow.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
And it's but you know, what's that over lining?
Speaker 4 (22:50):
I keep seeing this the clip from It's Always Sunny
when they're doing the wrestling and Frank's there at the end,
he just stands up. He's like, oh, shoot, I guess
I guess I'm still the winner standing here somehow.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
But yeah, I just a disaster.
Speaker 4 (23:01):
I didn't like Oklahoma too, Like, I can't believe I
even had Oklahoma on here, and like someone tweeted at
me later, They're like, what did have you seen from
Oklahoma this season that made you pick them here? And
I was like, I don't even know. I'm just dumb,
all right, is not the answer you wanted?
Speaker 1 (23:15):
All right?
Speaker 2 (23:15):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (23:15):
I don't like that it's on here either, Okay, but
it is.
Speaker 3 (23:17):
I can't change it.
Speaker 1 (23:19):
I have two betting things before we move on from
the recap of this segment. One, uh, and I tweeted
about this. There's a not so secret secret fandom of
Nebraska volleyball that I have that's been mentioned and brought
to the attention of many in the fan base. And
I'm not going to deny that. I'm not gonna I'm
not gonna sit here and talk about it. But we
may or may not watch a Nebraska volleyball game here,
(23:40):
and then it's it's clouding my judgment. You know, has
a volleyball team, right, Yeah, they're not. They're not good
in the programs.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
They shamble, but.
Speaker 4 (23:48):
It's so the part of being an Iowa fan is
not all the program is gonna be great, but you
got to root for your team.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
Heyboddy, we've talked about this.
Speaker 4 (23:53):
I'm not a fan, I'm not ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
I'm not standing with you.
Speaker 1 (23:57):
Yeah, they've actually been doing great this year. Took a
set from Oregon. I'm I'm still keyed in. I know
exactly what they're doing. I just in Nebraska.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
I just I just know all their places. It is
what it is.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
Anyway, the phantom of Nebraska volleyball is clouding my judgment.
And I've picked Nebraska way too many times to cover
or to go over or so the next time I
even mentioned Nebraska, you guys have to tell me Clover,
shut the fuck up, do not take Nebraska, and you
just have to get me out of that.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Okay, if I so, I.
Speaker 4 (24:26):
Want the same with West Virginia.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
I can't keep doing it, Okay, I'll hold you accountable.
With the Mountaineers, I.
Speaker 3 (24:31):
Think I'm done betting on Rutgers now too.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
Okay, perfect, I'm killing on Ruckers grants like Scarlet Knights.
I already put one in future on them.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
And then secondly, this is more of a positive note.
I did an NFL prop bet today five legger. That
is four for four currently at plus two thousand. I
need Aaron Rodgers to throw for more than two hundred
and twenty five yards tonight and I turned five into
one hundred.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
Do I hedge that bet? Or do we just let
it ride?
Speaker 3 (25:01):
Let it ride?
Speaker 2 (25:01):
You just let it ride and trust a ros right.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
I mean it's like, what are they?
Speaker 4 (25:05):
What's your cash out option?
Speaker 2 (25:06):
Even? Uh fifty bucks?
Speaker 4 (25:10):
Just so yeah, I just go for the hundred.
Speaker 3 (25:11):
Okay, So I've got I've got one for you.
Speaker 5 (25:14):
I'm a big teaser guy for the NFL's one teaser
every NFL weekend, and this is almost worse than losing.
I got a nineteen teaser out there. Didn't need the teaser.
I've got two more games to hit. Oh, I've got
the Sunday Night game of the Monday night game. Uh
seven for seven so far. Wow, didn't need the teaser
(25:36):
on any of them. So we could be sitting on
a nine leg parlay instead of a nine leg teaser.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
Which would be astronomical addios, which would be about ten
times more payout.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
Oh dear, but then you you.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
Already know if you made it the part like the
first leg would have lost by the forty points.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Or something butterfly.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
Yeah, maybe you do, maybe you don't, but I mean,
you know, Okay, So.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
Appreciate the the the invisible sponsor for that segment. We
don't have a sponsor. Speaking of sponsors, advertisers, Yeah, he's
on Email me, email Grant or me. We'll have some talks, right,
could be some opportunities coming around in the new year.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
I'm just gonna leave it there. I'm not going to
bury the lead here.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
I'm done with Kate, And even saying it like that
is like, who gives a shit, Bud, You're a thirty
year old former long snapper on a podcast, right, Like
no one cares. And that's generally how I view, like
when people online say this is unacceptable, like unacceptable to
Joe the banker, who like just has fandom for the Hawkekeys.
(26:46):
Like players aren't playing for your acceptance, Coaches aren't coaching
for it, but to some extent, like I personally, and
I think Caid's an okay quarterback, I'm not even sure
Brendan Sullivan is that much better.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
What I do know is he hasn't had to chance
to prove he is or isn't.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
And it's seven games into the year, and Caid has
had I wouldn't even say last week against Washington, Caid
had a performance.
Speaker 2 (27:10):
That was worthy of like he is.
Speaker 1 (27:13):
You know, he is absolutely locked down this position. He
did throw a great ball to Reese Vanders for that touchdown.
That's that's a big time college football play. The problem
is is that every team in America has a guy
who makes plays like that on a semi regular basis,
and we don't. I believe he was I want to
say he was like eleven of twenty four last night.
(27:35):
Not good throwing behind guys, throwing, he's underthrowing guys. He's
just had, in my opinion, he's had enough of a
run where I just don't see and I know the
whole joke with Brian, like, oh, what's the upside? I
really actually don't see the upside of leaving him in.
He just doesn't like if you put Kid on the
(27:55):
bench and bring Sullivan in, which we already do by
the way, we've KAF and let and the entire staff
trust Sullivan.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
We've talked about how he's a leader.
Speaker 1 (28:04):
In press conferences, KF has like, oh, I'm impressed with
his leadership and how people have flocked to him as
a guy who kind of like is a verbal you know,
this guy from Northwestern. In such a short time, we've
proven that we've trust him and that he will put
him on the field. I don't understand at this point
why you wouldn't at least give him a chance. With
the entire offense, A lot of what Kid did yesterday,
(28:26):
the interceptions as a primary one is just like it's
not getting it done. It's not even close enough to like, eh,
it's okay, we'll keep him. No, Like, it's just straight
up not enough of it is good. It's just not good.
And I know, like people are gonna be like, oh,
Clover finally came around. Well, I actually said this pre
(28:48):
Ohio State. I've been on this for about three or
four weeks now. I've said, I don't know why at
this point you wouldn't give Brandon Sullivan a chance, because
Kid just doesn't give you even what like an Aiden
Childs does, where like this guy can just sort of
create magic out of nothing if he has to. I
would I would pay every dollar that Caid was paid
(29:08):
in nil money to just give Aiden Childs a Hawkeye
jersey right now.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
That would be cool. He could at least make something happen.
Kaid's a good dude.
Speaker 1 (29:19):
He's been named, he's been called a good leader, he's
got the respect of his teammates. But as far as
like production wise, there there just is no spark or
excitement or you know, unless they just feel like Brendon
Sullivan cannot manage an offense, make checks, you know, on
a first and ten at thirty five yard line to
(29:40):
start a drive, and he just can't manage like your
every run of the mill drive, which I don't know
why he wouldn't be able to. I don't see why
KF is still playing Caid. I don't think that's the
reason we'd lost the game last night, but it would
be nice if you had a quarterback where maybe he's
the reason why you won, even if he's not the
(30:02):
reason why you lost on the other side of the argument.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
So I don't know about you, keV.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
You can give your thoughts or you can just completely
abstain from that conversation. But I know that there were
some conversations being had in our Beton group chat. I
won't name names or what they said, but I think
it's the same conversations that are kind of happening all over.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
Hawker Nation, Like, why why are we still playing this guy?
It's just not a lot there.
Speaker 5 (30:25):
Yeah, I mean.
Speaker 1 (30:27):
It was.
Speaker 5 (30:27):
It was glaringly obvious. You don't need to be a
ex college football player or college football coach to see that.
You know, there's guys open and he's finding them at times,
but he's just not making the throws.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
And when he finds them, it's not in stride, it's
behind him, it's too high. It's I even think of
the pass out to the flat that that Caleb Johnson dropped,
I think, and it was just a it was Caleb
kind of had to look back and it was just
a yard or too shallow. He wasn't leading him into
(31:05):
the path that he was gonna then take to run
out that route once he caught the ball. And it's
just like even little things like that, like we're just
missing throws. The interception was god awful And I don't
know what he saw or didn't see, if the guy
was supposed to run a different route or not, but
he's done that in multiple games. Now.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
That's how that's the Iowa State game.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
That crucial interception crossbody, crossfield to start the second half
the three interceptions he threw in Ohio State, or three
turnovers he had at Ohio State.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
It's just not there's there's there's not enough.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
There's not enough ceiling there to warrant him continuing to
stay in the game. Because if we played Brendan Sullivan
and he's dog shit, then we can just put kid
back in the game. It's not like you you you
play Brendan, it's like you lose the Caid mcnameric card forever.
He's right there, you just throw him back in if
things go bad, Like, I don't, I don't understand the
(32:00):
why you wouldn't do it.
Speaker 3 (32:01):
I don't all I don't know.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
I'm no idea what we have in Brendan Sullivan back there?
Speaker 2 (32:11):
What the what year is he Sullivan? Yeah, I believe
he's got one more year after this.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
Okay, he's he's just unknown eligibility at this point, just yeah,
who knows. It's twenty twenty four. No one has actual eligibility.
You just played till you don't want to anymore.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
It brings up a conversation, Kevin, I don't know if
this is why you mentioned it or not.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
It's like, well, Okay, we just talked about how the
Big Ten championship and playoff hopes are probably all but
dashed for this season. If he's gonna be the guy,
or he has thought of to be the guy for
now for next season, maybe there's maybe there's even mores.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
There are no better practice reps than game reps.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
There you go. So there's that. Now.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
I know we're gonna leave it at this. I was
a kidding when I said this is gonna be a
short recap.
Speaker 4 (32:55):
I know no one wants to sit with QB question
real quick. Yeah, absolutely a lot of to bake on
on on Twitter again, I'm not sure whose expert who's not.
But some people were confused why Sullivan is the red
zone guy. But then when we need a two point conversion,
they go to.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
Kid, you can throw me right in that mix. I
don't know that I was.
Speaker 1 (33:16):
I was pretty sure we were going to see Sullivan
for the two point conversion there and we just played
Kate and I sat there and my wife was probably
annoyed at this point because I said, why the fuck
is he.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
In for the two point conversion when Brendan's our red
zone guy?
Speaker 5 (33:30):
If I hazard a guess it's because usually oftense coordinators
have like their two point play going into a game,
and the two point play was the play you saw
which we're throwing the ball, and we're more comfortable with
Kate throwing.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
The ball at this point.
Speaker 5 (33:44):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
That just be my guess.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (33:47):
After after watching the high snap that Sullivan took later
and he kind of didn't even have a chance to
play action to Caleb and then he ran out behind
Hayden Large to the to the end zone for a score.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
I guess that would have actually been the first touchdown
the one before that.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
Yeah, he's a playmaker, like the guy can the guy
has a little bit of creation in him things are.
Speaker 4 (34:12):
Is it a pure wet on the on the bad snap?
A little like spin into the run?
Speaker 2 (34:16):
I believe? Oh yeah, I believe. So it was nice.
Speaker 3 (34:18):
It was fun, although I'm pretty sure Specer Peaches could
have scored on that one.
Speaker 4 (34:23):
Hey yeah, yeah, I might another great weekend.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
By the way, first of all, good for Spence, bring
him back, grantsman, grandsmen campaigning for it.
Speaker 4 (34:32):
That is that graphic does too well. It's like it's
like fishing for and by the way, I'm gonna do
the same thing, by the way, with Caid's face on
the on the Batman graphic. When whoever the next gut solving,
whoever it is, what inevitably, let's say like three and
out happens and everyone starts complaining, I'm gonna throw up
the cad one and it's gonna be the same thing, like, oh,
(34:53):
we were too we didn't give Kate a fair shake.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
Man.
Speaker 3 (34:56):
Yeah, I think it hasn't been since C. J. Bethar
that the backup quarterback wasn't the most popular guy in
Iowa City.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
Yeah, no, exactly, and I think it's often the case.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
But I mean the issue is is, like I mean,
the whole quarterback talent development, how it's played out since
basically Nate Stanley is a conversation that probably deserves a
further deep dive in a longer format in the off season. Nonetheless,
one last thing before we go, I said it was
gonna be a short episode.
Speaker 2 (35:26):
I'm gonna get you out of here because no one
wants to just sit in the misery. Chris Doyle and
I don't. Kevin, I don't know if you listened to
this yet. I've listened to it.
Speaker 1 (35:34):
Twice.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
I'll probably listen to it once more before I give
my thoughts.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
Chris doyle first public interview since basically all of it
happened in twenty twenty, Chris sat down on the Iowa
Everywhere network, another just absolute home run by Chris Williams
and the Iowa Everywhere guys, they're just crushing over there.
Speaker 2 (35:55):
They get a interview with coach Doyle.
Speaker 1 (35:58):
Keith Murphy took that on one on one, pretty good interview,
about forty six or seven minutes long. Keith hit him
with all the tough questions, just straight up like hey
you didn't did you call people the N word? Like, uh,
why do you think black players felt uncomfortable? Like pulled
no punches? And it was good, good stuff.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
About everyone in their Mom sent it to me and said, hey,
did you see this? Uh yeah, I saw it. If
you saw it, I saw it.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
And then everyone else who then assumed that I had
seen it and knew I was listening to it or
was going to listen to it, said hey, we need
a reaction podcast this.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
We need your thoughts, we need Kevin's thoughts.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
I Kevin can speak on it on a second if
he's listened to it, but I am going to give
my extended thoughts on a I'm not going to flood
your current feed that gets a podcast every single day.
With we already put out so much content, I'm gonna
go and just monologue and just sort of blabber on
a Patreon podcast. And I know what you're saying, Oh,
(36:58):
he's just doing it for click, He's just trying to
get money. I don't care if you come listen to
it or not at all. Don't don't sign up for
the Patreon. In fact, you could sign up, get a
free trial of Patreon, and then bounce after seven days

Speaker 2 (37:12):
It's free.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
But I'm going to put it on our Patreon behind
the you know, on that feed over there, because I'm
not even sure it'll be a good episode, but I'm
gonna sit down sometime this week and get my thoughts
on it.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
It was interesting, there's some interesting stuff in there.
Speaker 1 (37:30):
I have extended thoughts four years later, even after we've
talked about it several times about how that whole situation
went down and.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
How unfortunate really it is. CAV, did you see that
at all?
Speaker 3 (37:41):
No, I've not listened to it. Yeah, I'll probably try
to get to it sometime this week.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
Okay, there you go.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
