This is the WBZ Book Club. I'm Jordan Rich. I'm
glad I left weights because I picked up a book
that's rather heavy, but it's delightful. A History of Boston
by local author Daniel Dane, with contemporary photography by Peter
van der Werker. This is an amazing work, taking us
from the pre colony days all the way up to
the ascension of the first Asian American mayor. For those
of us who live here and love our city, Dane

chronicles it masterfully in just about every aspect, from its geography, politics, religion,
and sports, to the great contributions made by scientists here,
by artists, and certainly by writers. There may be a
bit of Hub of the Universe bias here, but is
no doubt Boston has, as the author points out, the
most important history of any American city, with many highlights

and yes, more than a few obvious warts. As one
reviewer says, Dane offers a compendium that spans both old
and New Boston, reminding us how urban centers with staying
power are hardly static. A great piece of work. A
