Good evening everyone, and welcome the Paint Valley High School.
I'm Shane colmebs inside of pack Donald Jigger Anderson Gymnasium,
home of the Paint Valley bear Cats, is tonight on
the Hernstein Hyundai SBC Game of the Week on ninety
four Country WKKJ, the Paint Valley bear Cats welcome the
UNIODA Shermans and what will be the final regular season

matchup in the SBC. It's a night of makeup games
in our area with the bad weather that we had
here a couple of weeks back. So Greg Bighan and
myself we split up this evening CHILICOFEE at McLean Over
on WBX and then I'm here at Paint Valley on
WKKJ to bring you this SBC matchup that's going to

(00:59):
determine the chachampionship. Inside the league standings this year, Unioda
currently enters at twelve and one in the league eighteen
and three overall. They have clinched a share of the
title with a Zane Trace team that's already finished up
at twelve and two. So the scenario here tonight is
quite simple. Unioda able to come out on top, they'll
advance to thirteen and one, and they'll be your outright

champion inside the SBC. If, however, the Paint Valley Bearcats
can pull off the upset, that would even Uniota and
Zane Trace at twelve and two and they would share
the title. Everything else inside the SBC standings pretty well set.
As I mentioned, Uniota eighteen and three overall, Zane Trace
seventeen and four. They're and actually it's Bitten County this evening,

Southeastern is finished in the third spot nine and five
fourteen and seven, but west Fall clinched the fourth place
finish at seven and seven nine and thirteen. This Paint
Valley squad, regardless of what happens here tonight, they won't
be able to catch west Fall, but they're already a
game clear of Huntington, So Paint Valley, regardless of tonight's outcome,

will be your fifth place team that currently sit at
five and eight seven and fourteen overall. Huntington and Piked
and share the sixth spot at four and ten Huntington
seven and fourteen overall, piked in five and sixteen, and
then Adena two and twelve, three and nineteen. Obviously, after
tonight we'll turn our attention to the postseason, looking at

some situations in the postseason. Before I get to tonight's
match up here, UNIODA listeners might be interested in knowing
the Ladies Sherman's defeated of Athens this afternoon and what
they call a district quarter final now it's basically the
sectional championship. UNIODA beats Athen seventy five fifty three, Miley
Smith with thirty three, Mia Hamilton at eighteen one. Really

important note there, Miley Smith five hundred and ninety five
points this season. That breaks Aubrey Eblin's five ninety two mark.
That's a thirty year old record in single season scoring.
Many of our older LIE listeners might remember Aubrey's ninety
five team that was the team that went to the
state tournament. Aubrey scored five hundred and ninety two that year,

and then again Miley Smith having just an outstanding year
at five ninety five. So congratulations to Miley in the
Ladies Sherman's move on. Don't they Sheridan on February nineteenth
at Logan High School at seven o'clock. So as we
as we take a closer look at tonight's matchup, you
come in. You go back all the way to the
beginning of the year, believe it or not, on the

December to the third when these two teams first met
over at Uniota. Unioda wins that night seventy six fifty one.
Brayln Robertson had not yet returned to the Paint Valley lineup,
so obviously that's a big, big factor. Both teams have
changed quite a bit, you know, twenty some games later,
as you can, as you can imagine, and I look
at some different keys for tonight, I look at the

live ball turnover. That'll be a big factor for Pink Valley.
This Uniota team will be on and off again sometimes
in their half coourts at offense, but they're led defensively
by a couple guys out front and their backcourt. Cayden
cuttwright leads the league and steals. Jackson Zickafus is right
up there with him, and I know they combined for
ten steals in that first game. And usually when those

two are taking the ball away out top. That's leading
the easy transition for Uniota and giving them easy points.
I also think rebounding will be a big factor. Carson
Free the league's leading rebounder, Colton Yoakam inside with him.
That's an area that Pink Valley when I've seen them
at their best, they're getting a lot of second chance points,

and they're getting up on the offensive glass. And then
let's pay attention to the three point line. The three
point line can be a big, big factor in today's
basketball in general, but in this particular matchup, I think
there's some role players for Pink Valley that could really
step to the front and space the floor a little
bit and see if they can utilize the three. Take

a little closer look at how these two teams arrived
at way they're at. The Paint Valley team early in
the year got off to a decent start. They if
ought to get their record back to five hundred rounds
six and six, and then they've really fallen on hard times.
They've run a little bit of a losing street. Now,
part of that's because of the tough part of the

schedule that they ended up running into. Lost a couple
of close games in there and things start to get
away a little bit. They've had a really really busy
week this week again, a little bit of the weather,
bunch some games together. Paint Valley recently lost to Circleville
North Items here at home earlier in the week. This
will actually be their third game in four days, so
that's always something to keep in mind. The Paint Valley

team this night, Real Deep. Paint Valley's a Division six school.
They will be the thirteen seed in the tournament after tonight.
Next Friday night, they'll travel to Lucasville Valley and take
on the number four seed Lucasville. They are on their
home floor. Juniota will be a Division fourteen. After tonight,

they'll take a bout battle week off. I think that's
next Thursday night. That's the Logan Elm will be at
Unioda again. Logan ELM's a team I called earlier in
the year against Chili Coothie. It's a really really good
basketball team. They'll want that record for you. Really really
a talented young man, the wall kid that leads them.
So that'll be quite a matchup. We will have that

matchup on WKKJ next Thursday. Night. We will also have
the Zane Trace first round game against Nelsonville next Friday
night on WKKJ, and then as far as other radio coverage,
Chili Coothie gets started on Tuesday night. Great Biger than
myself will be over at Chilliicathee for their first round
game and then from that point, as always, we'll wait

to see how teams do in their first games to
determine where we go from there. But best of luck
to all of our area teams as we get into
the postseason. But we're coming up on about two minutes
left here in tonight's pre games, so real quick, let
me take get down through the starting lineups. First, for
your Paint Valley Bearcats, the probable lineup will be junior

guard Jason Reinhart, will be joined in the back court
by senior Braylon Robertson and senior Jackson Emmel, and then
on the front line senior Clurson Free and senior Colton Yoakum.
Again one more time, for coach Lockery we the probable
starting lineup will be Ryan Hart, Robertson, and Emmel, with
Free and Yokum over on the Uniota side. For head

coach Matt Holmes. He'll go with the point guard Blake Fitch,
a five to eleven junior. Joining him in the back
court will be Jackson Zickafus, a five to nine junior,
and a five ten senior, Tayden cuttwright. Then at the
forward positions you'll have Blake Fitch five eleven junior and
KB Perkins, the six to five senior. So again, one

Welcome back to Pink Valley High School. Going through the
introductions of starting lineups there as I was given to
you just before the last break there before the national anthem,
and taking a look at a couple of numbers a
little bit deeper and Uniota seems to play with a
little bit more tempo and pace, scoring sixty four points

(12:15):
per night only allowing forty six point three for differential
up around plus eighteen paying Valley Side they've been scoring
to basketball at a higher rate here here recently, pushing
the offense up around fifty a night, giving up about
fifty six. So throughout the year they've played right around
the negative seven or eight differential, which kind of gives

(12:35):
you an idea team seven games under five hundred playing
at that differential tells you they've been in a lot
of games, which is certainly the case, and they've had
a couple get away from them late where that record
could see different. Payton Valley's kind of labeled throughout the
league is a very dangerous basketball team to two kids
in Clarson Free and Bravelyn Robertson, who have combined on

many nights for anywhere in forty five fifty to fifty
five points, and so kind of gives you an idea
how they can get it going. Bravelyn Robertson was a
recent member of the one thousand career point mark that
happened here at home earlier on and then in terms
of single season, Carson Free the Sooner, been right up
around points and rebound lead in the Side of Valley

Conference the entire year, I thought, Coach Lockery told us
on our Scoreboard show last night. I thought he said
thirteen straight double doubles. Don't quote me on that, but
there's something like that where Carson been getting the ten
points ten retails almissed every night out speaking of our
scoreboard show, our accurate heating, cooling and plumbing scoreboard show.

was denied. Now they'll go down on the post. Robertson

turnaround jump or too strong Perkins with Uniota with rebound,
pushes it out in the open court. It's the cut
right he finishes, so kb perkins right off the bat
with a nice defensive rebounds give gets cut Right the
open opportunity and transition to nothing. Uniota. Fight comes Ryan Hart,
taken away by cut right, cut right out in the
open court. He drives. He's gonna be bumped there by

Ryan Hart. Let's see if they're gonna give Kaden the
two free throws. I thought I fought Ryan Hart got
him on the floor there. Well, no, they're gonna say.
They're gonna say that cut Right got up into the
act of shooting. So it's gonna be two free throws
for Junioda just thirty five seconds in two nothing Uniota
and cut right. He'll go to the line trying to

in averaging two point eight steals per game, which leads
the SVC. Shows that defensive capability. They're also shoots it

to set the offense in the scrimmage area for the

ball screen from Perkins, penetrate and kick out to cut

right for three. No good. Zickafus fights for the loose ball,
had it for a minute now he'd lost it. Out
Comes paint Valley with it. Carson Free up the left point,
crosses over middle, had it poked away? Out comes Zickafou's
with it. Unioda has numbers and they throw it away.
Looked like on the other end that as Carson Free
tried to cross it over it was poked Awayda comes

out with three on one. Didn't space the floor real
real well and they end up turning it back older,
so we're just ninety seconds in four nothing. Uniota paint
valley back in possession of the basketball. Carson Free across
the timeline, throws it diagle into the corner to Yoakum.
Now backup top, it's Emil. Emil to the left hand,
drives hard. Had it knocked away. Robertson runs it down.

Robertson tries to throw it inside, taking away by Fitch.
Fifth into the open court, shot up and good Blake Fitch,
one of the league's top players, one of the point
guard his first bucket of the night. Six nothing Uniota.
Unioda applies a little pressure. Free breaks it with the dribble.
Now Ema has it in the corner, back into the

middle to Carson Free. He fights up through contact and scores.
Carson Free takes the lid off the basket for the
bear Cats, and Unioda now leads at six to two.
Back comes Fitch, going hard off the dribble to the
to the right hand. But I have some contact there

get there. I think it was Ryan Hurt to be
Obie under opportunity for Uniota fitch or end bound and
to throw it all the way out top to Perkins
his way to cut right. Cutwright turns to the bench

there and once as strong as he is, once he
turns the corner and gets downhill. If you if you're

makes his impact felt right away with an offensive rebound

we've seen a little bit of what we are talking

but right off the top of my head, I know
there's been about five live ball turnovers for the paint valley.
And when I when I say live ball turnovers, I'm
talking about the steal or a ball where you other's
defense is able to take it and get out and
transition with us. So I'm not talking about a travel
or throw away into the stands or things like that.

When we talk live ball turnover, we're talking about the
ability of a cut right of Zika Fou's there. We
just watch Fitch take the ball away and get out
in the transition, because that's when your defense just doesn't
have a chance, when when you is able to get
in the transition. And a lot of the fifteen points
so far for Unioda have been easy opportunities out in

the open court. So out of the short time out there,
Fitch will return to the free throw line. The second
free throw is up, that one bounces around, that falls
through free throw goods. Sixteen to seven Unioda. Back comes Elliott.
He breaks the ten count across the timeline. Now it

spin dribbles, kicks it to Yoakum in the corner. Yoakum
will drive it the right hand cut off there by
Mitchell back out Tope, it's Robertson. Robertson a little step back,
Carson free a nice cut away from the basket. Robertson
hits him, and Carson free lays it in sixteen to nine.

Under two minutes now to go, first quarter. Bitchies it
out tight for Uniota drives hard to the right hand,
kicks it out to Hoops. Hoops gets downhill to the
left hand and he's met there by free in yokam
and as he tried to get the shot up, they're
gonna call foul. I'm not sure which bear cat they're
gonna get. They're gonna say free got him. That's his first.

(25:15):
So now it's gonna be Blake. Hoops's turned to go
to the free throw line the left. The first free
throw no good, Blake A six ' to two senior.
He'll get a second free throw opportunity, shot is good,

(25:40):
free for Hoops, seventeen to nine. Unioda out in front
one forty five. First quarter. We'll token pressure from Uniota
free he'll bring it up and break it. Now he
into the way to Robertson. Robertson gives back to free
on the right point. A little flare string back to Robertson.
Now they'll run a stagger for Elliott. Pretty good job
at Unioda run him off the line, but then he

it on the left wing, and again they're trying to isolate

a nice little up and under good feet there on

that move Blake, Fitch lays it in nineteen eleven. Fitch
shows off a little bit of his overall game there,
the point guard able to go to the post against
the smaller defender. Robertson fighting against ball pressure on the
weft the court. They're going to get Welch for riding
the ball handler a little bit too closely. It's Jack

Welch's first team third so is still not a shooting opportunity.
Then bound on the side for paying valleys. As we
go into a minute to play, Robertson down low calls
a little bit of the double team his way to
Yoakum Yoakum, goes up blocked by Mitchell. Outcomes Fitch with it.

Fish into the open court off the hoop, hoops into
the middle. Wanted to try to hit Welch in the corner,
but knocked away. Loose ball. Out comes Robertson with it.
Robertson down the Emmel. Emmel drops him in the post
for Carson free shot up off the glass and good
in the file. You're going to get Dawson Mitchell. Carson

got into the shot blocker a little bit, was able
to draw the contact and get it up over the
six to seven frame of Mitchell fisted it off the
glass and it was going to get an N one opportunity.
So Carson free already with eight in the ball game,
free throw no good. So twenty five seconds to go

first quarter. Let's see if Uniota tries to take the
last shot. They have the basketball up six. Fitch across
the timeline gives way to hoops. Now it's fourteen to
shoot back to pitch. How Uniota looks ready to go
the cut right the hoops. They're going to bring Fitch

He gives way to cut right, cut right on the drive,
shot up, no good at the buzzer, and that brings

or a Zickafous or a Fitch is able to leak
out and transition, and Perkins is able to show off
of that that a baseball arm that he'll put on

here on your herdstein Hundi SBC Game of the Week
on ninety four Country WKKJ. The Unionoda Sherman's are victorious
to Siveing over Paynte Valley sixty three to thirty seven.
And it was Uniota straight from the tip, really utilizing
some defensive pressure, some good defensive rebounding, and both of

(01:27:30):
those things allowed Uniota to get out and transition and
get some opportunity to get some easy buckets. They led
nineteen to thirteen after the first quarter, some Paint Valley
hanging in there. But then it was a second quarter
that was nineteen to five in Uniota outscoring Payne Valley,

(01:27:53):
and as a result they led thirty eight to eighteen
and five in the third quarter, comes out and continues
to push forward, out scoring Paint Valley fifteen to seven.
They left at fifty, they let at fifty three, twenty
five after three, and they go on to win at
sixty three to thirty seven. And I'm going to be
joined by uni had a head coach, Matt comes matter.

(01:28:15):
You able to hear me? Okay, yeah, okay, Well I
appreciate you coming out and taking some time, you know,
you know, you know, Mat. In the pregame tonight, I
highlighted a couple of different things that I thought were really,
really important in terms of the light ball turnover and
then the rebounding. And I thought both of those particular
things allowed you to get out into the open court

(01:28:37):
and get easy opportunities. He obviously a cut right and
Zika Fous are two guys that take it away at
a pretty high clip in the league. And then I
thought Katy Perkins ability to really own the defensive glass
and turn and throw it out in the top. I
thought those two things got you out in transition and
maybe allowed you to get the tempo in your favor
early and often.

Speaker 20 (01:28:57):
Yes, KB did a great job on the boards because
that was a start coming in because the free kid
really rebounds and the Yoakum kid plays his butt off too,
I mean they rebound, so the fact we were able
to hold him to one shot and then kV was
able to, you know, get the ball out sometimes he
falls in love with that long pass.

Speaker 2 (01:29:14):
You know.

Speaker 20 (01:29:15):
Like for the most part, it's been good for us
this year to just kind of stretch that defense a
little bit. It gives maybe teams one more thing to
think about, I don't know, getting back.

Speaker 16 (01:29:24):
But you know, we do have to clean it up
a little bit too, so we'll see.

Speaker 20 (01:29:28):
But I thought, yeah, the deed the rebounds for us
got us in transition, and then we did create some
live ball turnovers too, which lead to a lot of things.

You know, mat with the wind the night you guys
clinch the outright title. An outstanding season to this point,
thirteen and one in league play, nineteen and three overall.
And now I go back to the summer and you're
not sure the status of kV Perkins, and then even
into the early part of the season after the West
Fall loss. I think you're sitting there at three and two,

and you know, I don't know at that point did
you feel like this was possible. I mean, obviously it
was because it happened. But I mean take me back
to that three and two spot in terms of where
you guys were really trying to find yourself and what
you think has changed to allow you guys to end
up in a nineteen and three opportunity.

Speaker 16 (01:30:15):
Well, no, I didn't.

Speaker 20 (01:30:16):
I mean, when you're sitting there three and two and
you're not thinking with the schedule we had laying ahead
of us.

Speaker 16 (01:30:22):
You know, we had we had non.

Speaker 20 (01:30:23):
League games of Circleville and Courthouse and Jackson, and we
still had to play Zane Trace a couple of times
from there, you know, and and you know so so
we I you know, no, I mean I would have
never in a million year's dream that we would be
nineteen and three. Good Lord's bless this team. We've stayed healthy,
you know, and and and we've you know, stayed together.

(01:30:45):
We're not perfect. We have issues at times like everybody else,
but you know, we've been able to play through them.
On the nights that we haven't been very good, we've
been able to find a way to win. And then
there's been some nights where we've been pretty good. So
but yeah, it's feel very fortunate where we're at. And uh,
you know, a.

Speaker 16 (01:31:01):
Good way to finish the regular season.

Speaker 2 (01:31:03):
You know, as you go up and down your Raw
Street as always, you know, obviously got everybody in there
toward the end there, but you know, you usually play
nine guys. I think had eight different kids score tonight.
And what's interesting about your team as you've started to
grow is, you know, the points kind of come from
whoever's turn it is that night, but there's three, four
or five guys that stuff this that sheet and that

(01:31:24):
That's what really jumped out at me tonight. You know,
regardless of who's scoring, you've got much better player movement
away from the ball. You've got guys sharing the basketball,
turning down good shots to get great shots. From a
chemistry and culture standpoint that you know, do you feel
like right around that Zane Trace Circleville Courthouse time that
that's when that started to come together and that's the
biggest factor for the for the great play down the stretch.

Speaker 20 (01:31:47):
Well, I don't know when it, you know, because we've
we've we've had moments where I think the ball sticks
and guys want to kind of get theirs. You know,
I'm not gonna lie about it. We've had some of that.
But maybe really as we lost that Jackson game. Looking back,
you know, I said in the locker room right after
that Jackson game that if if if this helps us
maybe beat Saint Trace Friday, it's worth it, you know,

(01:32:08):
I mean, if this wakes us up and tells us
we have to play differently, and if you remember, two
days later is when we had to turn right back
around and play, or three days later plays ain't trace.
So maybe that Jackson game, you know, just trying to
trying to do it in a way that's just not
going to be successful against teams of that caliber. I
hope maybe that woke us up a little bit. On
the offensive side. Defensively has been pretty good all year,

(01:32:30):
but the offensive side has gotten better. We're not gonna
be real good if we just play individual basketball. We're
gonna have to move, but have to share it. So
hopefully when we go in to the tournament we'll do that.

Speaker 2 (01:32:40):
Well, my last question, I'll get you out of here.
You know, now that the outstanding regular seasons in the book,
you turn your attention to the second season, which is
the postseason. A really really talented Logan Elm team coming
up by next Thursday. That'll be a home game for
you guys, So I'm sure that'll be a great atmosphere.
I know you're gonna take time to enjoy this tonight,
but kind of peek ahead for me a little bit there.

What what what do you guys need to do to
get ready for next week? Well, I mean here's the thing.

You know, they're really good and and and they're seeded
way lower than they should be just based on you know,
they had some early season close losses. You know, you know,
I think at one point they're point differential. I mean
here lately was like one. I mean that shows you
how many close games they've been in, you know, and.

The way better than their record.

Speaker 20 (01:33:26):
They've got one of the elite players in our area,
and they've got a lot of other guys that know
their role and play, and they're very well coached.

Uh because drops he does a great job.

So I you know, look, you know, you never know
in the tournament. Some years you think you get a
great drawl, some years you think you get it. There
we'll draw, you know, and it's no doubt it's going
to be challenging. But you know we're gonna be there,
and we're gonna work over the next four days to
get ready for it, and uh and we'll see where
we're at. I you know, I like our team. I'm
sure he likes his team. It should be a good

Uniota is a winner over Paint Valley sixty three to
thirty seven. Take an opportunity to go down through some
individual scoring. First on the winning side for the Unioda
Shermans seventeen apiece for junior Blake guard and senior guard

Caden cuttwright to share top scoring honors, and then it
was very balanced from that point on. Had Jackson zikafouse
and double figures with ten Blake coops with eight KB,
Perkins with five kV had an outstanding night on the
defensive glass two for David Long and four for Dawson Mitchell,
who also did a nice job probably blocked four or

five shots and then had some defensive rebounds. Add all
that up and you get to the sixty three four
paint valley. They were led by Carson Free with twelve.
Carson had ten of those in the second half, eight
apiece for Brendan Eisen and Braylan Robertson the freshman ice
and had all eight of his in the second half.

Braylan Robertson had two threes on the again he had eight,
and then it was three apiece for Jace Reinhart, Landon
Elliott and Colton Yoagum. Jase Reinhart fought a lot of
foul trouble in the first half and really cut his
normal minutes by quite a bit, and then you add
all that up and you get thirty seven there on
the Payne Valley side. Well, I think that's probably going

to do it here this evening. I think Coach Lockery
is with his group now in the locker room, and
we'll go ahead and give him his time. To keep
in mind. At Tuesday night over on WBX, Greg Bigan
and myself will have the Chillicothee Cavaliers and tournament action
