Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us now on ZLX. I got a regular working
class guy, grew up in Hopedale, really made something of himself.
And by that I mean a fifty plus year career
in the business rock and roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters
Hall of Fame. But I think the thing he's most
proud of the first band to ever appear animated on
The Simpsons. Am I right about that? Mister Joe Perry.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
That's a good one. It was pretty amazing. We got
the most exposure for the least amount of work.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Isn't that awesome?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
I can't thank you enough for taking the time today.
I know you are log jammed up with the Joe
Perry Project and for those people that have been living
under a rock, Joe, you enlisted Chris Robinson of The Crows,
your brother Brad, and Bucky Johnson from Arrowsmith, the rhythm
section of Robert de Leo and Eric Kretz's Stone Temple Pilots.
I mean, tell me how it came together so fast?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
You know, I had worked with Chris because he'd sang
on my last solo record, and you know it's one
of my favorite singers, one of my favorite bands. I
talked with Brad, especially because I wanted to play some
deep Aerosmith cuts, stuff that he and I have never
played D four on stage, So we're going to do
(01:12):
a few of those. And then and Robert de Leo,
who has known since their first record, came out. Roberts
one of the best, and he suggested Eric from his.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Band Joe, Like, I guess at this point, I mean,
you're all seasoned Vets, You're all seasoned pros and legends.
The rehearsals at this point in the game, the rehearsals
have got to be easy. But I got to think
that the hardest thing right now for you and all
involved is putting together a damn setlist. How do you
even go about that?
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Well, you're kind of like sweat bullets. I mean, it's
been I'll tell you, it's been keeping me awake.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Yeah, well, decades of multi platinum hits will do that
to you.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
I mean. And Chris is up for everything. I mean,
the sus when I got on the phone with him,
he named five Aerosmiths songs. Su Is, let's see that one.
Let's see my sister favorite. Wow, you're kidding.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Me, man, really deep stuff.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
I mean, the first set was we got about to
forty five and sixty songs.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
You're all fans of each other's bands and music, so
it's like you you all want to play a little
bit of each one, so you all want to play
your favorites. I'm sure, so.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yeah, So that's kind of how it's what the set
looks like. It kind of jumps around. I don't think
people are going to be sitting down much, you know,
Oh hell no.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
If I can throw a couple more and screw up
your your head a little bit more, I mean, I'd
love to hear like Chip Away the Stone, Sick as
a Dog, Kings and Queens, I got the rock and
rolls again, you know, just the easy stuff.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
I can tell you you'll be you're hitting the mark
and a couple of those already, so beautiful. This is
where we're starting, boys, if we may get in there
and play a few and just and like like you said,
you know, we're all throws, but we'll see you know.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
I mean, you know, I hate to say it too,
but obviously the first date is the thirteenth to August
down in Tampa, and then you want your way up
here to Box Center Wing Theater on the nineteenth of August.
I feel like you guys are up against the clock.
But when do official rehearsals begin for.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
This Oh, on the first.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
This is the end of this week. I mean ten
days later you're out on the road. Talk about being
up against the clock.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Yeah, I have a guitar in each hand right now, right,
I have the cell phone like kind of held up
with my shoulders.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Well, there's anybody that could pull it off. It's Joe
bleeping Perry.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
We're getting close.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
It's going to be absolutely absolutely So you only got
about eight headline dates. I say only because again we're
going to appreciate every one of them. But aside from
the headline dates, too, you're finding time to open a
little east coast West coast if you like that, for
the Who, including Fenway Park here. That's got to be
cool to share a bill with another group of legends.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Hell yeah, And you know, we've played with the Who
in Japan and they opened for Aerosmith's really because they
had never been to Japan.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
So Who opened for Aerosmiths And.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
I was really really surprised. You know, you're going to
be kidding here.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
So it was great, incredible.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
I got to see teeth. Town was actually smashing guitar, Joe.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
I think being from around here, you probably even saw
The Who playing Boston back in the day.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
It was like and I remember seeing that it's the
tea party in like sixty eight and working in a
factory during the day and on the weekends and driving
to town and go to Steve bands at the tea party,
and one of them was the Who.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Joe, you spent decades traveling the world, but it's got
to be extra special coming home and playing America's most
beloved ballpark.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
You know, I remember the last time it was a Sunway.
You know we were winning that long ago.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Yeah, wasn't it when you had extreme opening, right?
Speaker 2 (04:41):
I think so? Yeah, you know, I mean I never
thought that they have rocking all with Sunway. It's too
good to keep down, you.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Know, Well, this question is too good to keep down, Joe,
And I know you know what's coming, but I think
I would be fired if I didn't ask this question. Unfortunately,
Aerosmith's fiftieth anniversary farewell tour was cut short. There's been
so much chatter online the possibility of a one off
Arrowsmith show. We all saw Steven Crush it at the
(05:07):
Black Sabbath. Back to the beginning show, he sounded dynamite.
I understand you guys have at least been talking, right.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Oh yeah, you know we're actually talking quite a bit.
I know touring days are over, but I don't know.
It's hot to me.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
No, no, but I mean the fans, I mean, we
had to understand that where everyone was coming from. We understand.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
I mean, yeah, we're all flushing flushing blood, you know.
And from the beginning to the point I would I
don't know, man, I would say, at some point is
going to be something that we will all be together
on the same stage.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
So you're telling me there's a chance I was a.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Betting man, which I am, or also wouldn't I would,
I would, I would say, it's at some point something's
going to happen, but.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
We'll see awesome. Well, we the you know, the fans,
the members of the Blue Army will be very thankful
when and if that day comes. Joe, listen, I know
you continue to stay in touch with Alice too, Alice
Cooper and the Vampires, And I heard something swirling around
about a documentary with those guys. Did you have any
plans to get that going again too.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Yeah, Oh yeah, that's a shock. I saw a rough
cut of it not too long ago.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Also, it's done well, it's.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
At the point now where it's edited exactly from the
Wing Center. So that show, so there's going to be
a lot of footage from that. There is some great,
great stuff in there. Alice talks about the original Empires
at the Tomombo. You know there's a lot of cool stuff.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Keith Moon, John Lennon, Harry Nielsen. Yeah, well listen. Joe
Perry Project, August nineteenth, Box Center, Wing Theater August twenty sixth,
a week later, opening with the who We'll see Hopefully
they give you at least an hour Shoe. I mean,
I think nature and God intended it that way.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Well, they got a lot of songs to stuff into
their set too, right.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
And who knows, maybe Pete Townsend pulls you up on
stage to jam with them.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
I like that, Joe. When you hit your headlining shows here,
especially when you hit Boston, Hampton Beach Stand in Connecticut
as well. I got to know who's opening for you, guys,
who has that pleasure?
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Well it's David Hall the Dirty Angels and David Hall
the Bass player the first two solo records. I did
you know we've been We've been friends for years.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
David played with Charlie Farron too, didn't he in Fahrenheit?
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Oh yeah, I think when I'm in Canada, I think
Charlie is going to be plenty of orders. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Well, listen, everyone else out there can get brushed up on,
you know, your first couple of solo records, and of
course the latest Sweezeland Manifesto and Sweezeland Manifesto MAK two
for those that are in the know. But listen, grab

your plate, and we always love having you on here
at ZLX. Good again, Good luck with the set list.
