Wednesday night in OKC. We're going to have a conversation
with the radio voice of the Thunder Matt Pinto. And yes,

(01:56):
at the club. Welcome back, Cavs HQ advised Betway on
the Medical Mutual Cavaliers audio Verse. Great to have you
with us. Jim Jones with the night off tonight, but
that was Jim and yours truly, tim Elcorn last night.
Cavaliers with a nice home win as they got their
first home win of the year, beating the Golden State
(02:17):
Warriors one fifteen to one oh four. And now the
Cavaliers will head out on the road four games starting
Wednesday in Oklahoma City when they take on the Thunder.
In fact, we'll talk with Oklahoma City Radio play by
play man Matt pinto a little bit later on in
the show. But right now we welcome in a very
special guest to Calves HQ, a guy that is known
(02:40):
to Calves fans going back to the night he booby
trapped the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals. One
Daniel Booby Gibson, as always Booby. Great to have you
on the show.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Oh man, thank you always seeing me right at home
when I hit that booby trap, come out. That's the point.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
And of course that was the iconic call of Joe Tate,
the legendary Joe Tate, when Daniel Booby Gibson had that
monster game in Game six of the Eastern Conference Finals.
But you're still around this Cavalier family. So tell listeners
and fans how you're still involved with this team and
especially down the street a little bit with the Cleveland Charge.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Yeah, man, they can't get rid of me. Once I
stopped playing, they kind of kept me around in the
ambassador role where I would still come to events and
come to games and do things for season ticket holders.
But after the pandemic, I kind of I really wanted
to get back closer to the game and find a
way to really just just tap in with these younger
players and just give my knowledge to them. And I
(03:47):
got into the ACP program. It's the Assistant Coaches program
through the NBA. And I was working on shooting at
the combine and JB biggest staff saw me and he
was like, wait a minute, you teaching shooting. Why wouldn't you?
You have never brought this to us, and I'm like,
I'm kind of just getting into it. Coach is trying
to figure out, you know, what's next for me, and
he was like, well, you should figure that out here.
(04:08):
And that's that's JB.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
Man.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
He always welcomed me with open arms after I was
finished playing. Still made me feel at home. And yeah,
those guys kind of added me to the charge as
an assistant coach player development guy. I do some scouting
too for the Cavs. But it's just the best position
to be in because I get these kids writers they're
coming into the league, and I'm able to kind of
(04:30):
show them a routine or something to make them more
comfortable and preparing for what's it his. So I'm excited, man.
I love the opportunity they've given me, and I'm just
falling in love with these kids more and more every day.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Looking back, Booby, did you always think about coaching? Was
it an aspiration? Never? Really?
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Ever?
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Yeah? When I played, I was more of a do
it type of player, like not really the Rod Rock guy,
not really telling guys where to be, but like, look,
you know we're gonna do this, and then to kind
of show them by action. So I never I really
thought I would be the guy to be given demonstrations with.
What I can say is I've always been really good
with people and really finding ways to talk to them
and help them just understand maybe a better way that
(05:12):
the coach presents it to them, just from a player's perspective.
And so that's the gift that I've been able to
use here, just being relatable and being connective and somebody
that the guys feel like they can trust because I've
been through the wars. But I tell you, I never
thought that I would be on the coaching side of things.
But you know how life goes. We make plans and
then life happens.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Well, you're right about that, and I want to circle
back because you mentioned ACP. I think this is a
really cool progressive program that the NBA has put together.
Explain to our listeners and Cavs fans and Charge fans
how that works.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
Yeah, So the NBA offers different programs for former players
to kind of stay connected and just learn the business
side of the NBA. And so there was a Future
Stars program, which is what I want. I wanted to
be a fun of where they teach you all the
front office things like for a scout in salary, cap trade,
and you name it. But the ACP program was what
(06:10):
was available. But they told me I could get all
of the Future Stars information if I went through that program.
So I kind of it was kind of about default.
But once I got in and then I saw like, oh,
as an assistant, Oh this is how this works out.
So I found ways to kind of make it my own.
And like I said, jay Be just made it an
easy transition by coming schooled me out on an internship
(06:32):
last year for the Charge, so I was able to
kind of fill out like where I could have my
biggest impact. And yeah, I've just been growing in that
role and just trying to learn and get better at
it every day.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Again, we're talking with Daniel Booby Gibson, former Cavalier guard
and as you just heard, him explain now working his
way through the ranks on the coaching side, and Movie,
We're gonna talk a little bit about the Cavaliers backcourt
tandem of one Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell. And after
the game last night, we had Darius on our post
game show and he talked about as a guard, the
(07:04):
difference between being a scorer and being a passer. Let's
hear from DG.
Speaker 5 (07:09):
I mean, it's just a balance, okay. I mean my
teammates they still get mad at me when I don't
shoot the balls.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
I do too, so I mean.
Speaker 5 (07:18):
It's it's a challenge. But I mean with the pieces
that we have, we can I can never be too unselfish,
I believe.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Talk a little bit about that. And as you watch
DG scoring versus passing and the mentality of a guard, Movie.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
Boy, is that a tough tough balance to find when
you can shoot the ball as well as he can,
Because even me, I'm like, dang, take that one. But
but you notice, though, when he's not on the floor
for us, like it feels great to see those guys
healthy and have everybody in the lineup last night, but
just when he's not on the floor, you see how
(07:52):
much it hurts our offense where guys are moving the ball,
guys don't get touches in the places where they're most comfortable,
so dang for him. It's a tough battle to figure out.
But the great ones find that balance, you know, they
know that there's moments in the game where you just
got to put the ball in the hole and get
a bucket and be a threat. But there's also throughout
(08:12):
the game you have to gauge your teammates and make
sure that they're all engaged and getting the ball in
the places that they need to And I think Dards
does a great job at it for us, but it's
one of the hardest things that I had to do
as a player. Most of the time I add on
the side of shooting, but it's tough for guys to
figure out, especially the younger guys trying to find their way.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Is that something that's coached or is it innate.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
It's a little bit of both. Like the coaching staff
they try to put you in a position to be
successful and run plays for you to get your shot off.
But it's also a field thing for players, you know,
just understanding time and score, Like if there's a time
in the game where we're not making shots and you
making those passes and guys are putting it in, then
it might be a time for you to get aggressive
(08:59):
so that the guys can see shots go in and
get the crowd involved. So it's really a read thing
and like some like I said, some guys just have
a little bit better of IQ than other guys. But
the only way that you can that you get better
at it is just through experiences, just through the fire.
That's the only way to kind of LEARNICH which part
works better at parts of the game.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Terrific Insights. Daniel Booby Gibson our guest on cavs HQ
presented by Betway. We're gonna get a quick time out in,
but we have more to cover with movies, so stay
with us. Kavs HQ presented by Betway. We'll continue right
after this on the Medical Mutual Cavaliers audio verse.
Speaker 6 (09:42):
As y'all lock the Lebron pass down zep Sadamon Joe
Otter movie ve all in seventy Gray sixty seven time
out and then try.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Later. Fright Pistons have been booby trapped that movie. You
knew we were gonna play the Islander. You had to know.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
I get chills every single time. Every time I hear
I get chills. Man. I did a camp yesterday at
the rock Man, and like the fans, they still come
up to me and just they remember exactly where they
were that night, exactly what was going on, and they
all bring those stories to me, and I love every
(10:25):
single one of them.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Well, it's interesting. We closed out the last segment by asking,
you know, scoring versus passing? Is that coach? Does it
innate when Lebron comes to you before Game six and says,
young man, you're gonna shoot it tonight?
Speaker 4 (10:38):
You listen correct absolutely that I didn't have a choice.
That was nate. I knew that night that I was
gonna have to shoot the ball, and just thankfully those
things they were going in for me that series. I
had a pretty good shooting series though, so I wasn't
getting a lot of volume. We were talking the other
day about how the game's changed and it's seventy three
(10:58):
pointers being shot. Now, if I was shooting in this
era of the NBA, how much higher my numbers would be.
But I'm like, I still like the fact that I'm
still about six on the on the charts, knowing that
I wasn't taking as many as other people. So that
just says, you know, that's a pretty high rate of
efficiency that I take pride in. But that night, that
was a special night. Man. I'm just I'm just thankful
(11:20):
that they were going down for me, boy.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
No doubt. Again, we're talking with Daniel Booby Gibson and
we were talking in the last segment about the backcourt
of the Cavaliers with Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell, and
of course Donovan has just been spectacular so far this season,
and as you referenced, it's good to see this starting
five that the Cavaliers had projected now being together for
(11:43):
a couple of games. And Donovan said last night the
Cavs are still figuring that out, but they can get better.
Speaker 7 (11:50):
Now that we're starting to figure it out and kind
of planning to go, this is what it's going to
look like. And you saw it in the second half
against Indiana tonight.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
But the biggest thing is now is we just can't
you know, be like, Okay, we found it. You know,
we got to continue to build.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
A Booby and your experience when you're working with new
guys and you're trying to blend everybody in. How long
does that process take?
Speaker 4 (12:08):
I mean it could vary. I think for us, we
bought their role guys that like fit a roll. They
know who they are, they know what their job is
when they're coming in. So I don't think that process
takes now. I'll give it like a couple of weeks.
But I feel like with end game and experience, those
guys will every game continue to trust each other more
and more and just know where guys like the ball
(12:28):
and just know that they'll be there and like the
most pressure pack moments. But then you have the opposite
when you think of a team for example, like maybe
Milwaukee who brings in a guy like Dame. Now they
have to figure out how to share the ball, like
who wants the ball at what parts of the game.
That process takes a little while longer to navigate and
figure out. But for us, I just think game by
(12:51):
game you'll see, you know, if we can stay healthy,
these guys just continue to grow and build on what
we have because I mean, we still have our core
for from last year and building on that with the
key pieces that we felt like after the playoffs last
year that could help us take that next step. So
I think it goes a little faster when guys are
coming in as well. Guys as a post to those
(13:11):
big names.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Well, let's talk about the guys that you'll be working
with down the street a little bit at the Wolfstein
Center with the Cleveland Charge.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
I love my guys.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
And by the way, for a young man who didn't
have coaching aspirations, I've watched you at the Cleveland Clinic Courts.
You love coaching, man, you get really into it.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
But how I love it.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
How exciting is it to work with these young guys
and watch them grow that fans will see at the
Wolfstein Center.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
Man, it's special. Man, if you're a cast fan, I
would love for you guys to come out and just
check these kids out because in the g Man, you
see these guys lay it all on the line every
single night. You know they're fighting for the NBA dreams,
so you know they come down there with a lot
of hunger. And then for me, you know, working with
a guy, let's just say, let's just use Emani for example,
(14:00):
coming in, you know a lot of chatter, a lot
of noise, so he just coming in with a big
chip on his shoulder, just wanting to work hard and
get better, and so to have the opportunity to get
in the gym with him and just share with him
some of the experiences I've had, Like we just talked
about that Game six moment or the other moments that
I endured through the years when I couldn't get on
the floor, and I felt like, you know, I deserve
(14:21):
minutes kind of showing him how to navigate those moments
and stay even killing those moments. And then when you
actually see it happen, when you see him get on
the floor and you see him comfortable and playing like
he belongs like they're telling me about the coaching. The
coaching wins now, and that's the most exciting part, man,
just seeing these guys like take the information in and
(14:43):
then when it comes out on the floor, just seeing
them get excited with the fact that they're getting better
and growing. That's to me, that's the best part. And
I've been seeing today that's the joy. You got to
see me on the court smiling when we shooting and
working out, because I just see these kids growing every day.
And I might not have wanted too when I started,
but I'm falling in love with it more and more
(15:03):
each day.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
No, you stole my last question. I was just gonna
say before we go, you didn't have the aspirations now,
but how seriously has that bug bitten you? This coaching thing?
Speaker 4 (15:13):
Oh Man, I've got the I got the bug, Man,
I got the itch. I don't know if it'll take
me up the ranks and coaching, because I feel like
I still have that front office passion, but it'll never
take me off the floor regardless if I'm if I'm
on the scouting side or the front office side, I'll
still be on the floor and in the gym with
these guys every opportunity I get. I'm just addicted to
(15:36):
helping these kids out and just being that mental for them,
that guy that they all feel like they can trust.
I want to be that for me and show them
the Cavalier way. Man, I want to be that for
the guys for a long time to come.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
That is why you are beloved in this Cleveland community.
I mean it. Pay it forward and show these guys
what it's like to be Cavaliers. Booby thrilled, Thrill and
again man, good luck with the charge this year. There's
exciting talent at the Wolstein Center.
Speaker 4 (16:07):
There's gonna be a lot of fun man, from Isaiah
to Miney. The Craigi still there, Pete. We got a
lot of guys ready to show up and show out. Man.
So if you guys are in town or around and
the Cavs not going, you should come down to Cleveland
State and check these guys out.
Speaker 8 (16:22):
Man.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
They deserve their love too.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
You can get me tickets.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
I got you court time.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
All right, man, Booby, We really appreciate you stopping by.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
Thank you man anytime.
Speaker 8 (16:37):
Man.
Speaker 4 (16:37):
You know I love Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Man.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
Any chance I get, man, you can give me a call.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Sounds great. Daniel Booby Gibson joining us here on Cavs
HQ presented by Betway. Awesome stuff from Booby. We'll take
a quick time out more to come stay with us
on the Medical Mutual Cavaliers Audio Verse.
Speaker 8 (16:59):
Last the Cleveland Cavaliers supported the surprise delivery of two
brand new vans from Cleveland Cliffs to the Boys and
Girls clubs up northeast Ohio. One of the vans will
be used to support transporting youth to activities to and
from the club, while the other will help transport hot
meals to each club location. The purchase and delivery of
the vehicles was a part of Cleveland Cliff's commitment to
(17:21):
the community through the Jersey Patch partnership last year. Calves
in the Community is brought to you by Discount Drug March.
We'll be back with the second half of Calve's HQ,
presented by Betway. Right after this on the Medical Mutual
Cavaliers audio verse.
Speaker 9 (17:43):

oh one, idyha, He's got thirty plus again.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
This is CALVS HQ and the Medical Mutual Cavaliers audiovers
presented by Betway. Now back to the second half of
the show with Tim Alcorn and Jim Jones.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Here and we welcome you back. Jim Jones has the
week off, but great to have you with us on
CAVS HQ. On the other side of the window, the
Dynamic duo Senior Producer Kurt McLoughlin along with technical director
Marty Allen. Boy, you just heard those highlights from one
of the up and coming teams and one of the
(18:39):
exciting young teams in the NBA, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
And when the Calves start off their West Coast road
swing on Wednesday night, they will be an okay s
to take on this Thunder team and Calves will look
for a little revenge. Oklahoma City came here and on
the Cavs home opener knocked off the Cavaliers one oh
(18:59):
eight two, one oh five. The outstanding radio play by
play voice of the Oklahoma City Thunder now joined us
on CAVS HQ one Matt Pinto, to talk a little
bit about Wednesday night and also this young, exciting team.
And Matt, first of all, your first appearance on CAVS HQ,
so we welcome you in. Thank you so much for
(19:20):
joining us.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
Oh it's my pleasure. Tim, thanks so much for having me.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Well, let's talk first before we delve into Wednesday night.
Because of course, OKAC playing tonight with Atlanta, but just
this young team and how it's coming together and watching
it blossom right before your eyes. How exciting is this
team and the ceiling that they could possibly reach.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
You know, the team now three drafts ago, decided it
was time to pivot from what had been a pretty
extraordinary run of success in the NBA since the inception
of the franchise from Seattle now sixteen seasons back, and
the determination was made. It was pretty transparent in the
way that Sam Prestick was going to go about it,
(20:02):
and that would be through the draft. He just believes
that a market this size, it's difficult to attract the
bigger name free agents, and that in order to build
equity and to build what he believes and visualizes as
an entity that can contend for many years, which is
what he was able to do in the first iteration here.
That was the objective, and so he's gone about collecting
(20:24):
draft picks, utilizing those when it's been his turn to
begin to restock the roster and in doing that, Shay
Gilbs Alexander was here when the pivot began, but they've
been able to bring aboard Jalen Williams, a season ago
from Santa Clara, a guy that finished as his runner
up with you the year behind Paula Dank Carroll of
Orlando a season back. His namesake, Jala Is from Arkansas,
(20:46):
a second rout pick a couple of years back, has
also become a staple in the rotation. The Cabs didn't
see him the first meeting he was out with the
hamstring issue, but he now is back in the throes
of things for the Thunder. Then the draft a year
ago brought chet Holme, the second overall pick. The Chet
was not able to play as a result of a
list frank a foot fracture. He now is back in
the fold for this team and has shown a whole
(21:08):
lot of excitement around the game that he is going
to be throwing at the NBA for many years. So
I think that as you look at the team the
way it's been constructed, the objective ultimately became we have
a player that's risen to star status in Shay Gilbert Alexander.
Now let's cobble with pieces around him. They're going to
work and make sense. De Thunder always tim team to
(21:28):
have the objective of bringing athletes in that are have length.
They have a selflessness about the way they play the
game and are willing to buy into really playing for
the team and team concepts. And so Josh Giddiot tervit
passer from Australia fit that mold and they drafted him
as well in the throes of this reboot. So all
these guys, I think the objective is from the team standpoint,
(21:51):
to be in essence, hitting their peek in their prime
at around the same time. Now, it's not going to
be an exact science along those lines, but they're trending
in that direction. This pass crop of picks was Cason Wallace,
who the club's excited about tenth overall, and Kyante Johnson
and assigned to a two way contract. But all the
(22:11):
guys I think are in the mold of being versatile
in today's game, being capable of playmaking themselves. So it's
not on only one player. It's not an iso heavy approach.
It's an approach where everybody handles the ball. The team
becomes tougher to guard. They look to create space, to
get out with pace and defensively disrupt with the length
that I've referred to a couple of times.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
Again, we're talking with Matt Pinto, radio play by play
voice of Oklahoma City. They take on Atlanta tonight, but
the Cavs will be in okac on Wednesday to start
a four game road trip. All right, Matt Real, quick
help a fellow radio play by play guy out, how
do you differentiate on the okc side the two Jalen Williams.
Speaker 3 (22:52):
Yeah, I mean they made it easy here when they
were introduced at their initial press conference in that jam
Le Williams Santa Clara, who was the hire of the
two draft picks, basically said he's dubbed Jay Dubb by
anybody that knows him. And then Jaylen Williams from Arkansas,
was the early second round pick, said he goes by
Jay will So that's how we differentiate for fans here.
(23:15):
But you being in the situation of seeing this team
only twice a year, it's not easy and it drives
people crazy. And not only is that a challenge and
they play together often, but there's a Kenrich Williams on
the roster as well. Right, there are three Williams. At
one time or another, they could all be on the
floor in Unison. So it is very challenging without you know,
(23:36):
getting into explanations every time one of them touches the ball.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
There you go, Hey, let's talk about Shay Gildes Alexander.
I mean, you talk about a superstar in the making.
This young man is special and you've seen a lot
of great players over the years, But how good is
Shay Well?
Speaker 3 (23:54):
I mean he has a really unique ability tim and
had when he came out of Kentucky six seasons go
now to not be hurried in what he does on
the court. He isn't an explosive athlete. He's not a
guy that's going to overwhelm you with what it is
that he generates in terms of speed or strength or
any one component. But he's got an incredible feel for
the game, especially on the offensive side of the ball,
(24:16):
so he gets to his spots in ways that are
creative and unique. He's the number one driver in the
NBGA this season and has been each could last two years,
which means he gets to the rim with frequency. He
finishes with either hand. He is willing to take contact.
Despite him not being an overly physically powerful guy. He
has the ability to finish around the cup with either
(24:38):
hand and gets to the free throw line of ton
or at least did a season ago at almost ten
attempts a game, so he was a thirty one point
per game scorer. Last year made the All Star Team
for the first time with the first All Team NBA selection,
and the reason for that a year ago was he
added a similar strength to his offense on the defensive
side of the ball, began to chase players down, wasn't
(24:59):
giving up on plays. His length I can really create
problems for opposing offensive and he's got the knack as
a guard to block shots. He stays after plays and
block shots from behind. Sometimes he'll go up at six
to six with great length and contest shots that at
times he'll get a piece of as well. So he's
a complete package, but he's a unique package. He's not
the modern day three point or die offensive. That's not
(25:22):
his objective. He gets to where he wants in spots
that are inside the arc, from mid range, or at
the rim, and I think in some ways a throwback
NBA offensive player. But it's so fun to watch him
develop and play. He plays the game the right way.
He's very unselfish and has done nothing to get better
since he entered the NBA because of his will to
be the best, and you see it in his work
(25:43):
ethic and it certainly is spilled out on the floor
as he's progressed every single season he's been a pro player.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
And he is just an incredibly, incredibly talented young man.
I mentioned Jim Jones has the Night Off tonight on
Cavs HQ, but my broadcast partner on Cavs broad Cast,
and when you guys were here a couple of weeks ago,
he just raved about homegron Cheed Holmgren and what the
potential is for this young man. You see him night
(26:10):
in night out, game in game out your thoughts on Chad.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
He brings a real fierce competitive fire to what he
does and there's a fearlessness in him as well. He's
got guard skills and a seven foot one inch body
which is highly unusual, which means you can step out
on the perimeter, create shots for others, create shots for
himself off the dribble. Has shown the capacity to be
a high percentage three point threat from anywhere around the arc.
(26:38):
Also is a rim protector. I think second in the
NBA at the moment in block shots. He leads all
rookies by a wide margin in blocks and in three
pointers made. So just a unique package. A guy that obviously,
as you look at him, you think he's got to
put some weight on in order to become more physically
intact to protect the paint and the rim area. But
(26:59):
you almost don't want. I want to disrupt what the
uniqueness is that he brings in general, and that will
come over time, one would expect. There's no hurry for that.
It's under I think steel as if he brings unique skills,
they want to really accentuate those in the throws of
what they're doing at both ends of the floor. And
they're still learning that, honestly, Kim, they're still learning how
to incorporate him the best.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
I think.
Speaker 3 (27:20):
To his credit, he's not wanted to jump in and
grab a ton of shots. He's willing to play in
the flow and take the shots that avail themselves to them.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
Well, I'll tell you what, it is a fun team
and it's on the rise. We'll be there Wednesday night.
I know you've got the Hawks game to call tonight,
so I have a great call this evening, and then
we'll see you on Wednesday when the Calves come to town.
Speaker 3 (27:41):
Sounds good.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
Thank you, Tim, thank you, Matt Pinto the radio play
by play voice of the Oklahoma City thunder Calves open
up the road trip on Wednesday when they take on OKAC.
We'll take a time out. We'll have more on cavs HQ,
presented by Betway. After this on the Medical Mutual Cavaliers
audio Verse Quarter behind his back on the Driller, what
(28:05):
are the lane shoots and its okay? Right Porter Junior
with his first two show you stuff dup Man Porter
and Traffic right Side. Sire Smith debates three in Bonnie
Bays Bye ol Biie Barnie, That's what I'm talking about
to book a back cavs HQ. It's presented by Betway.
(28:29):
All along the Medical Mutual Cavaliers audiovers. Great to have
you with us and great to be joined by the
radio play by play voice of the Cleveland Charge and
my good friend Scott Zerrilla Cavaliers have played seven games.
Charge will get it started on Friday night at the
(28:50):
Wolstein Center, in fact, a weekend doubleheader per se Friday
and Sunday. The Charge will kick off the twenty three
to twenty four season when they host the Wisconsin Herd.
So Scott, great to have you in as we get
ready for Charge basketball in downtown Cleveland.
Speaker 10 (29:06):
Tim, always great to be with you, but I've got
to correct you. It's a pet peeve of mine. The
season isn't kicking off. It's tipping off, all right, the
football season kicks off.
Speaker 7 (29:16):
And the other thing.
Speaker 10 (29:17):
To our senior producer who puts all this together, Kurt McLachlin,
what's of them doing these Craig Porter and Imani Bates Man,
they're they're playing so well with the Cavaliers. Am I
gonna see them with the Charge, because early going, it's like,
you know, they're gonna need some work, you know, that's
what the G League is for. Get them some time,
let them get their feet wet, let them learn the system,
(29:40):
go back and forth, spend some time with the Cavaliers.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
Man.
Speaker 7 (29:42):
After what they've been doing in the early part.
Speaker 10 (29:44):
Of the season, Boy, they look fantastic.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
Now to me, here's the difference between Imani and Craig
Porter Junior, and they both have very bright futures. Imani,
of course, a year at Memphis, a year at Eastern
Michigan where Craig Porter Junior had that run at Wichita State.
I think at this point Craig looks a little more comfortable.
Speaker 7 (30:06):
Oh, he really does. He really does.
Speaker 10 (30:08):
And I got to tell you, I don't like to
pat myself on the back often, but I'm going to
right now.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Oh I never knew you to do.
Speaker 10 (30:13):
Yeah, yeah, you and I have never really talked much
about that. After the Cavaliers signed Craig Porter, it was
practice prior to summer league, and I saw Cavs GM
Mike Gansey, good friend of yours as well, out of
Cleveland clinic courts, and I pulled him aside. We small
talked to us, Always says. I got to ask you,
I said, am I wrong? Because when we signed him,
(30:33):
I went and looked at a lot of his tape and.
Speaker 7 (30:36):
I said, am I wrong?
Speaker 10 (30:38):
There's Craig Porter Junior, like really good.
Speaker 7 (30:40):
And he'said, oh my god, we love him.
Speaker 10 (30:42):
He plays at his own pace and all the stuff
that we've already seen through the early part of the season.
But to your point, he's a guy Wichita State, with
Fred van Vliet and all the guys that come out
of there. When he plays for the Charge, and he will,
it's a matter of when and how much he's going
to tear that league apart him and Shariff Cooper and
the court.
Speaker 7 (31:00):
They're gonna tear that league apart. They are really good.
Speaker 10 (31:03):
Imani's gonna be fantastic and have an Isam Mobi back
as the third two way, when we have all three
of them, we're gonna do damage.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
We are and guiding this team. Mike Garrity in his
second year, and of course he led the Cavaliers to
the Summer League championship out in Vegas. This is a
guy you talk about bright futures with players. Mike is
a very bright future as a coach.
Speaker 10 (31:24):
I really enjoy him, you know. Last year was his
first year coaching really at any level. Charge finished thirty
and twenty in the regular season. They split the playoff games,
which we hadn't been in the playoffs for five years.
I'm not smart enough to be a coach, but I
always watch the coaches and appreciate what they do. Is
I'm sure you do as well. And he gets out
and he gets in the middle of the drills and
he doesn't just walk through them heat because he can
(31:46):
still play, and he's very enthusiastic, and he takes the
time and pulls the guys over and you can tell
he's explaining how to do it, why to do it
this way, and he's much more than just like an
X and zero. He's player development, which of course he
does for the Cavaliers. He's embraced it. And when I
talked to him last year and I said, Hey, any
(32:07):
chance you're coming back for a second season for this year,
he goes, I hope, So he goes, I love it.
He's really invested. And again I think to be a
coach you have to be, but it's very genuine with him.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
One of the things when you watch the Cavs in
summer league ball was that it wasn't wreck ball, it
wasn't AAU ball. There was structure, there was development, and
I think a lot of credit to that goes to
Mike Garrity. I thought he did a wonderful job in Vegas.
Speaker 10 (32:34):
Well he does, because again he takes the system that's
already in place from JB.
Speaker 7 (32:39):
And that's what it's supposed to be.
Speaker 10 (32:40):
It's just kind of shifting everything to the guys with
the charge so that when it's time to play for
the Cavaliers, they know the system.
Speaker 7 (32:47):
It's a matter of just.
Speaker 10 (32:48):
Getting acclimated to the faster bigger, let's be honest, better
NBA aspect of it. So now he's done a great
job of really working between the two organizations.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
Again, we're talking with Scott Zilla is the radio play
by play voice of the Cleveland Charge and with the
Calves on the road for the next ten days. If
you want to see some basketball in downtown Cleveland, head
to the Wolstein Center. I do the reads during the
Calves games. This five bucks, five to five bucks for
the Wolfstein Center to see terrific basketball at the G
(33:18):
League level.
Speaker 10 (33:19):
And I hope I'm not giving anything away and somebody
from senior leadership comes down and throws something at me.
But we're getting a new video board up at the
Wolstein Center, which is gonna be great. It's gonna be
so much better for the fan experience. We've got the
specialty nights like we've had in the past. We've got
what Taptain America Night this year, We've got oh my gosh,
I'm trying to remember them all. We've just we've got
(33:41):
a ton of great opportunities to come down again joking aside,
five dollars a ticket winning weeknights if the Charge win
on Monday, through Thursday, you'll get a ticket to a
free ticket to the next home weekend game, weeknight game.
So winning you're in, as we like to say on
a playground dollar Dark Fridays, Kids Days. It's fantastic. And
(34:06):
there are so many guys. When people say, well, who's
in the G League, I could take a whole day
and you know this, there's a ton of guys in
the NBA that got their start in the G League.
And you'd like, like Duncan Robinson of the Heat, is
Gabe Vincent he played in the you know, Dean Wade
started with the with the Charge. Just so many guys.
(34:29):
You don't know how good they are until you see
them in the.
Speaker 7 (34:32):
G League and they say, man, these guys, they're really good.
Speaker 10 (34:36):
And anybody that knows the league better than I do
will tell you it's the second best league in the world,
and it really is. It's the NBA, it's the G League.
And then you can have your pick of the rest.
Speaker 2 (34:46):
There you go, and again G League action for the
Cleveland Charge tips off Friday with the Wisconsin Herd and
then again a rematch on Sunday with the Charge and
the Wisconsin Herd. So a couple of games this weekend
to get to the Wolstein Center.
Speaker 10 (35:01):
And since you've already plugged it a couple of times,
if you want to listen in, and I know you do,
you can dial up the free iheartmobile app and search
Anyo Sports radio and you can hear all of my
well good batter indifferent play by play you all fifty games.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
Appreciate it, No, you do a great job. Hey, a
couple of minutes left. We've talked about Jarif Cooper and
of course Craig Porter, Junior Imani Bates, a local guy,
Pete Nance, and of course listeners down in the Revere
High School Larry are gonna know about Pete. You're gonna
have a chance to call him this season.
Speaker 10 (35:38):
We had a scrimmage on Saturday and he was fantastic,
six ' ten, built like his dad, you know, Larry's.
Larry's built a little bit different. But Pete can shoot
the basketball. He's a shot blocker, no surprise there active
a rebounder. He's a lot of fun and it's great
to have a local kid on the team and he's
gonna get good minutes. So if you haven't seen Pete yet,
or if you saw him, and you want to see
(35:59):
how well he's doing in the G League, come on down,
he's playing.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
And let's not leave out Summer League MVP Isaiah Mobley.
Speaker 7 (36:05):
All right, I mean, how.
Speaker 10 (36:06):
Good was he last year in Summer League. He's gonna
come back. He's just so he has just grown so
much since last season. And he was the core player
for the Charge, not only last season, but as you said,
MVP of the Summer League championship, it's gonna be a
core player for the G League this year too.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
And before we let you go, one of the things
that I really love is how the Calves players really
support the Charge. You go down to the Wolstein Center,
you're apt to see Donovan and DG and those guys
sitting there. No, not this weekend. Caves are on the road,
But they really support those guys and cheer them on.
Speaker 10 (36:41):
You know they do, and not just like one or
two guys. It isn't like Evan coming to see his
brother Isaiah. All the guys, different guys, different nights. They
are all their front row across from the Caves bench
and they're into it and they're fun.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
They know the.
Speaker 10 (36:56):
Importance of it because they've worked together in training camp,
and then the three ways are going back and forth
and stuff, the support and the connectivity which is a
big deal in the G League and the NBA. It really,
you know, because it'd be easy for the NBA guys. Mike, Well,
it's the night off. I'm gonna go home or I'm
gonna go do what I do. They come down to
charge games. It's fantastic, it really is. We talked about
(37:17):
it a moment ago. The atmosphere at the Wolfstein Center.
It's fantastic. It's only gonna get better with this new
video screen. Come on down, give us a try, five
dollars a ticket. If you don't like it, come over
and throw five dollars.
Speaker 7 (37:29):
At me and we can go from there.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
All right. Charge Basketball tips off this weekend Friday and
Sunday against the Wisconsin Herd. Go down and see the Charge.
Because the Calves are on the road, We'll go down
and see them whether the Caves are home or not.
But it's a great product. And Ze Man, you do
a great job on the radio side.
Speaker 7 (37:48):
I appreciate the time. Thanks.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
All right, we'll take a time out. We'll wrap up
this week's edition of Cavs HQ presented by Betwait after
this on the Medical Mutual Cavaliers Audio Verse. That's Gonna
do it For this week's edition of Cavs HQ presented
by Betway Fun Show. Thanks to Daniel Booby Gibson for
joining us. Also Matt Pinto, the radio voice of Oklahoma City,
(38:13):
and Scott Zerrilla, the radio voice of the Cleveland Charge.
Cav's back in action Wednesday night when they're in okac
to take on the Thunder. We'll talk to you again
on Wednesday on the road. So until then, TOI Melcorn
saying thank you very much for listening, and so long everybody,
