Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to calves HQ, presented by Betway. Thank you for
joining us on the Medical Mutual Cavaliers Audio Verse. Here
are your hosts, Tim Alcorn and Jim Jones.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
From the Cavaliers production studios at Rocket Mortgage field House
in downtown Cleveland, Hi. You get everybody, and welcome to
calves HQ. Tim Elcorn with you. Jim Jones has a
well deserved night off tonight. Jim has been busy, of course,
inducted into the Cavaliers Wall of Honor on Sunday and
then game Sunday night and Monday night, so Jim deserves
(00:38):
a night off. And of course Jim and I will
be back with you tomorrow night when the Cavaliers start
a three game road swing. They will be on the
road in New Orleans to take on the Pelicans. Well
we thought tonight on calves HQ we would look back
at Sunday and the incredible ceremony that took shape in
the atrium at Rocket Mortgage field House for the twenty
(00:59):
twenty for Wall of Honor class. It included my broadcast
partner and great friend and Cavalier legend Jim Jones, also
inducted on Sunday, former players Terrell Brandon and Mike Mitchell,
and longtime statistician for the Cavaliers Chuck Brosky. It was
a very special afternoon. We'll hear comments from Jim Chones
(01:22):
along with Terrell Brandon and the son of the late
Mike Mitchell, Mike Mitchell Junior. And we'll also hear from
Jim's daughter, Carrita as she introduced Jim at the ceremony.
So it was a very special afternoon. We thought you'd
like to hear a lot of the comments that were made,
so we're going to bring it to you. It's Cavs
HQ presented by Betway and it continues after this on
(01:44):
the Medical Mutual Cavaliers audio verse.
Speaker 3 (01:49):

Speaker 4 (02:00):

buzzer chams with.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
The incomparable Joe Tate and of course calling those memorable
plays of Terrell Brandon who on Sunday, along with three others,
was inducted into the twenty twenty four Cavaliers Wall of Honor.
Of course, Terrell Brandon drafted number eleven in the summer
of ninety one, spent six years with the Cavaliers. A
(02:33):
two time All Star, he was a very special player
and one of the best guards that the Cavaliers have
ever had. So right now, let's hear from Terrell Brandon
as he talks a little bit about his career and
being inducted into the Caves Wall of Honor.
Speaker 5 (02:48):
I'm honored to be here, naturally, in actually say it
back in nineteen ninety one, you know, coming from north
and northeast Portland, there's now an out of guys come
from my neighborhood to go pro. So that was something
that I wanted and I'll never forget that. Mister Wayne
Emery and of course mister Gunn and the gun family,
(03:11):
Gary Fitzsimmons, and all of them who drafted me, I'll
never forget they said, David Stern said in nineteen ninety
one NBA draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers select Terrell Brandon at
the University of Oregon. I just remember going yes, I
finally made it. And because this man right here, the godfather,
(03:32):
mister Wayne Emory. I can never say enough about you.
I appreciate you so much and the talks that we
had in your office, especially as a young guy, it
was so important. And I appreciate tip of me and I
thank you, mister Hemory for everything you've done for me.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
I appreciate you again.
Speaker 5 (03:52):
My sister, she alluded to this, and I'll get out
the way. But to my family, my nephews back there,
de Vaughn, Steve and Stephan, my brothers Wayne and Bryant,
and my other brother Vine who couldn't be here. But
I appreciate you and I love you, and I thank
you for your support. Always always I'm looking at my
(04:14):
man right here, and uh, I mean, what can I say?
I mean, Mark Price, he taught me the game, taught
me how to be a professional point guard, my post
Larry Nance. You know, he adopted me right away and
let people know, if you want anything to do with
my rookie, you got to ask me. So he taught
me how to be a great pro. And I appreciate
(04:34):
your pop. And then my man Brad Dougherty, like you
said on the on the podium that Uh, I wish
we could have played longer because I had so much
that I want to learn from you. And but the
years that I did play with you, man, was an honor.
It was a privilege. I want to say thank you
man to coach Clemens, always good to see you, sir,
and uh the godfather other than mister Emory the man,
(04:57):
mister Austin Carr, mister cavalier. I remember when I got
drafted here. The first thing my dad said to me
was clean cavaliers. Mister Austin Carr. You make sure you
go straight up to him and introduce yourself. And ever
since then, that great smile. And we've talked some of
these days and nights about my game and where I
should go to elevate my game to another level. And
(05:18):
I appreciate that, mister Carr and mister Campiy Russell. I mean,
what can we all say. I mean, when we talked
in January and you called me in Portland and he
said congratulations, I said, thank you.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
What but you're talking about?
Speaker 5 (05:33):
And he said, man, you've been nominated or inducted to
the Wall of Honor, And I just like what said me.
He said yeah, man you. So we're gonna send some
things and emails and get you your family here from Portland.
And so I love you so much. You've been a
big brother to me, mister Russell, and I appreciate you.
And he always say, man, step call me mister Russell,
(05:55):
and I said, I can't help it. I just can't
help it. He deserves that. Ippreciate you, mister Russell. I
want to also say thank you to Bob Zing, Bob Price,
my doctor Bob back there. I love you so much,
my doc, and so many people. When you get in
this position, if you really don't know what to say,
(06:17):
you want to thank everybody. But one thing my dad
taught me. He said, if you ever forget anybody, just
say I want to thank everybody. Y'all see me. So
appreciate this very much. I want to say much respect
to my mom, miss her, but understand that you know
it's time to move on. And she's in heaven, so
we're in a good place. And to my dad and
his wife who he remarried three years ago. And so
(06:41):
God put a wonderful woman into our life, added some
spice to our life that we didn't know that was coming.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
And you know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
But it's been beautiful Miss Carolyn Brandon. She's a wonderful,
wonderful person and I appreciate her.
Speaker 6 (06:54):
Well.
Speaker 5 (06:55):
My kids, I love them very much. Trevor is thirty
three now is talking, and my youngest son, Sorell Junior,
is fourteen, almost fifteen, and my daughter is thirteen. So
I'm a blessed young man. Thank God for everything's down
for me. And you know, congratulations again to all the
ones who defintely took the ball to honor and hope
(07:15):
I needn't let you down. Thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
That was Terrell Brandon again, what a remarkable player he was,
and some very moving comments on Sunday being inducted into
the Wall of Honor of the Cleveland Cavaliers. We're going
to take a quick time out. When we come back,
the spotlight will shine on my broadcast partner, Jim Jones.
We'll hear remarks from his daughter Krita as she introduced Jim,
(07:37):
and we'll also hear from Jim himself. Stay with Us
Cavs HQ presented by Betway continues after this on the
Medical Mutual Cavaliers Audio Verse.
Speaker 4 (07:51):

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Eighty five playbook and again Joe Tate with some great
calls of Jim Jones, my broadcast partner and of course
a great player with the Cavaliers, and for those accomplishments,
he was inducted on Sunday into the Cavaliers Wall of Honor.
And of course Jim and his lovely Wifelores have five children,
(08:33):
two daughters and triplet sons, and it was Jim's daughter
Karita that introduced Jim at the Wall of Honor ceremonies.
Speaker 7 (08:41):
Thank you to the Cavs organization for what has been
a wonderful weekend for my family, and I so thank
you very much. As John said, I'm Karita, Jim's oldest daughter,
and I'm honored and humbled to be here with you
this afternoon to celebrate so many deserving individuals within the
Caves family. One member of this family had like to
talk about just for a moment, because I know he
wants to get up here and talk with you all.
(09:03):
Is my father, Jim Chones. As many of you know,
Dad came from humble beginnings in his hometown of Racine, Wisconsin.
The oldest of six, He had a great deal of
responsibility on his shoulders when it came to paving the
way for his parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, friends, and countless others.
(09:23):
My dad's three d's desire, determination, dedication to his craft.
That craft of basketball is what consistently set him apart
and has continued to do so to this day. As
a player, your desire was to be the hardest working
player on and off the court, Determined to provide for
(09:45):
your family and provide inspirational leadership for those in our
community and for communities around the country. The game of
basketball has been a constant pulse in your life.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
Dad.
Speaker 7 (09:56):
As a player, a father of five Division one basketball players, husband,
community advocate, and leader, you always discuss how life many
time mirrors one's on court play. Knowing your role, knowing
when to speak versus not, when to let others learn
from their mistakes, and when to be there as a
(10:19):
supportive teammate. For that, Dad, we thank you. Currently, as
a radio analyst, you are dedicated to maintaining the utmost
level of professionalism around the game. Every night, you serve
up a recipe of facts, keen analysis with a sprinkle
of fun, pass anecdotes, storytelling combined with a few lyrics
(10:40):
from your favorite old school tunes. I hear you singing
all the way Milwaukee, I do. Your love and astute
knowledge of the game seeps through each and every time
your voice hits the airwaves. For that, Dad, we honor
you today and every day for your amazing work as
an NBA champion, legend, broadcaster, husband, father, papa, uncle, cousin, friend,
(11:05):
and just for being a wonderful human being. We love you, Dad,
And as you always remind the five of us kids,
you're chones hell.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
You can do anything.
Speaker 7 (11:16):
Congratulations on being a twenty twenty four Cavaliers Wall of
Honor recipient.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
So that was Karita Jones as she introduced her dad,
Jim Jones, at the Wall of Honor ceremonies. And I'll
let's hear from Jim himself.
Speaker 6 (11:29):
You know, I was sitting around and I was thinking,
I wanted to go last, not necessarily because of ego,
but because I wanted to talk about some people. We
don't really understand what we have here in Cleveland, but
you need to understand that we're unique. Not every team
in the NBA is like this. We are family. We
(11:53):
fuss Me and Larry Fuss Camping be mad at me
for half a season, and then all of a sudden
he'll call me and say you all right. You know,
so we're used to that. But I was looking on
the wall. I mean, think about what we have. Wayne Embry.
He is the godfather. He is the trendsetter. He is
(12:17):
the one that made it possible for us to even
imagine life after sports. I mean, that is incredible. You know,
He's been a Hall of Famer, Executive of a Year
a couple of times, and just a wonderful human being.
Every time I came to him, you know, he would
always give me advice, and I just wanted to acknowledge him.
(12:42):
We have another Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkins, what is
he third or fourth now? And wins another Hall of Famer,
Nate the Great Therman. How you doing, missus Jones? You
know I had to watch Nate, and then we had
(13:03):
Bill Fitch, another Hall of Famer. Think about that, four
Hall of famers in one organization, and to some people's estimation,
we've had the greatest player to ever played this game.
Think about that, Lebron James twenty sixteen. But I started,
(13:26):
I just wanted to say those things because all of
those people deserve and mention. I'm going to tell you
a little story about how poor we were. Wayne's been
down to Racine, so he understands. Anybody ever here spotty gravy,
(13:47):
Larry you a country boy, you ever spotty gravy, let
me tell you how poor we were.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
We had spotty gravy.
Speaker 6 (13:56):
You know them big black skillets, the ones that raised
hw We used to deep fried fish in well, we
just put sausage in there and deep fried sausage. When
the sausage is done, you take the sausage out, you
put it on a plate. You got coffee over here, bubbling.
(14:17):
You take that coffee, you pour it in that pork grease.
And what happens when water hits grease, The grease comes
to the top. It looks like spots that spotty gravy.
Now you take a biscuit, you put butter in the biscuit.
(14:39):
I always took two. Maybe that's why my blood pressure
is so high. And then you take those two biscuits and
you put the butter in them, and then you sprinkle
sugar on top, and you pour that spotty gravy over
you talk about something good, and that's why we all
have high blood pressure, diabetes or whatever. But I just
(15:00):
wanted to say that, and it's not a joke. It's
a reality where all of us have come from what
we call spotty gravy country and this dream has come true.
Come on, there were people of this big. My sister
could whoop that I couldn't whoop. I was a coward
of most of my life. They used to say, go
(15:23):
get your brother. I'm a foot taller and everybody getting
my ass whoopd every day. And to have a dream
come true coming from Oklahoma, all that flat land out there,
to being one of the greatest guards to ever play
this game. Mister Cavalier used to take gass whoopings all
(15:45):
the time from his dad because he told us this
is truly a dream come true. And the reason why
I tell you all of this is because I want
to tell you that we're family. We are a family.
We've been through a lot. All of us are CALVS family.
(16:09):
This is unusual, Kobe, This doesn't happen around the NBA.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
Well, Jim Jones is just getting started. If you listen
to Cavaliers broadcast on the Cavaliers Audio Verse, you know
Jim always has plenty to say and he will keep
you entertained. So we'll take a quick time out and
when we come back, we're gonna hear more of what
Jim had to say on Sunday on his induction into
the Cavaliers Wall of Honors. So stay with us. You'll
(16:36):
hear more from Jim Jones after this on CALVS HQ,
presented by Betway on the Medical Mutual Cavaliers Audio Verse.
Speaker 8 (16:51):
This Thursday, as part of the Cleveland Cavaliers for All
the Land program, thirty youth will attend a hockey clinic
at Cleveland's Heller Well. They will learn basic floor hockey
skills from members of the Cleveland Monsters Front Office.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
Calves in the.
Speaker 8 (17:06):
Community is brought to you by Discount Drug March. We'll
be back with the second half of Calves HQ, presented
by Betway. Right after this on the Medical Mutual Cavaliers
audio Verse.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
The rosen to the left album from Behind to Shave
It not quite as Lebron dives into the crowd right
on top of us.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
He's all right, as Lebron.
Speaker 8 (17:26):
James, your life, babe, he's down right beside of us.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
Six come up, great, save baby. Five seconds, let me
get up.
Speaker 6 (17:33):
Go ahead, I'm fine, great, Save Baby.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
This is calvs HQ and the Medical Mutual Cavaliers audio Verse,
presented by Betway.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
Now back to the second half of the show with
Tim Alcorn and Jim Jones.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
And we welcome you back to CABS h Q again.
Jim with the night off tonight and Jim will be
back tomorrow night. Cavaliers open up a three game road
swing in New Orleans against the Pelicans. But what a
special day for Jim and his family on Sunday, as
Jim was inducted into the cavaliers very prestigious Wall of Honor.
Before we took the break, you heard from Jim. But
(18:12):
as I said, Jim had plenty more to say. So
let's go back to Sunday and hear the rest of
Jim's comments on being inducted into the Cavaliers Wall of Honor.
Speaker 6 (18:21):
It all starts with one man, a guy from Detroit,
who showed us a new way of doing sports business,
sports networking. It fell in love with him because he's
from Michigan, and he fell in love with me, and
he fell in love with mister Cavalier, Austin Carr. We're
the only three old guys over seventy years old that
(18:44):
are basically the voice of a sports team. I just
signed for three years, and I'm sure these guys will
be able to go as long as they want. That
kind of loyalty. It's what this team is about. What
we did with the bow ties and dance son. They
don't do that.
Speaker 7 (19:04):
Man.
Speaker 6 (19:05):
I've been to la, I've been to the bus. They
don't do this. This is highly unusual, and so I
just wanted to make sure that I had enough time
to acknowledge all of this. But I also want to
say this, This award is more than numbers, analytics and stats.
(19:28):
It has more to do with what's on the inside,
the road we have all traveled, and those people that
have influenced our mindsets, decisions and actions that have brought
us to this point. This ceremony, my mother my father,
my wife, my children, my high school and college coaches,
my teammates on all levels, the fans, acquaintances and friends
(19:51):
along the way, my enemies, my daughters, the unbelievers have
all been an inspiration, a motivat to overcome the struggles,
the challenges that we all must face. That is what
makes this ceremony so special, a validation of a job
(20:12):
well done. Could I have all of my people stand up,
the ones that came, especially the ones stare at risk, Carlton,
and don't take the lamps. Leave the lamps there, don't
take the toiles and the bathrobs, leave all that in there.
(20:35):
You know, we want to leave a good impression. This
is my This is one side of my family. When
I came to Cleveland, I grew up here. I was
wild and so I had to grow up and I've
been very fortunate. I want everybody to sit down. But
my wife, thank you very much. I want to thank
(20:58):
her for staying with me. I knew you weren't going
to leave because you had too many kids. Don't nobody
else want five kids? And believing in me in spite
of myself and in spite of our situations at times,
(21:20):
you still went to church every Sunday, prayer meeting on Saturday,
physically gone. And then you did something on Wednesday, and
then you read the Bible to your mother what every morning?
Every morning. So somebody was looking out for me. They
were on their knees praying for me. And that's what
(21:44):
this is all about. This is a celebration of family.
The Chunes family, my Calf's family, my Cleveland family. I
know a little bit of everybody in Cleveland. And I
also want to acknowledge my legends. Will you stand up
all my legends. Mayor Mayor Warrensville, Brad Sellers stand up.
(22:06):
We got a mayor in our chapter who has a
great young daughter who's gonna be on the next level.
They just beat Ohio State a couple of days ago.
Young Sellers was prominent. And we also have Janis Braxon,
(22:26):
the first MVP of the first Final Women's Final four,
first national champions. That's right, Janis Braxon, Hall of Famer.
She's our secretary, treasurer and conscience. Jim, you can't do
that now, Jim, Now listen, I'll take care of it.
That's Janis, and so these are all our people. I
(22:50):
also want to acknowledge a couple other people Bob stand
Up with that baseball cap on yes stand Upsala's high
school coach, and he caught help because she went from
pepper Pike to Trinity. We left Trinity and went to
(23:18):
Eastlake North and for three four years she stayed there
and developed not only as a basketball player but a person.
And I just want to thank you again in front
of all these people, because that was not an easy
road because at the time I was broke, so I
(23:40):
couldn't go to really any other Catholic school because I
had money.
Speaker 3 (23:43):
To pay for it.
Speaker 6 (23:44):
But anyway, I just wanted to acknowledge that. But I
also want to acknowledge my other daughter, Corrita. For Marquette.
I sent Marquette a highlight film of all the things
she did well bred that it was hard to scrap
it together, but I did, and Marquette took her. They
(24:08):
took her, and through the course of there she became
synonymous with Marquette. It's called her mother hen and I
never will forget. Me and the wife were sleeping out
in pepper Pike because we were recovering, and I remember
the coach called and said, mister Charles, I got a question.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
I'm asking you. I said, what is it?
Speaker 6 (24:28):
He said, would you mind paying for your daughter's education
so that we can use the scholarship for someone else
cream I said no, I said, because what I was?
And I hung the phone up. We never talked again.
(24:49):
Next year they got rid of her because when you
make a commitment a submission, you have to stay with it.
And I knew that, but evidently he didn't. I don't
work like that, and neither does my family. We're committed
to Cleveland and all of these guys you see here,
(25:12):
teams don't do this. They don't have good relationships. Some
guys never speak. We are so fortunate. The greatest cav
center to ever played, Brad Doherty does broadcasting with US.
Mark Price just came in heights. And how Larry Nance
has been a consultant for years. I mean, no team
does that, Kobe, no team does that. This is a
(25:37):
rare Andy, we got Andy. I mean, this doesn't happen, Hey, Jan,
this doesn't happen, So enjoy this. This wall of honor
is a special situation. But don't take it as something
that just happened. Is just a general event. It's not.
This is a very special organization and we're gonna win
(25:58):
another championship. Anytime you lose three starters and you still win,
and you beat the best team in the East and
the best team in the West, and you're missing three starters,
doesn't that tell you something. We're on the right path.
We just have to stay together as a family.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (26:22):
That was Jim Jones. Always entertaining, but always very thoughtful
and terrific remarks from Cavalier legend and my broadcast partner
Jim Jones. Of course, another Cavalier legend has sadly passed away,
Mike Mitchell, but his son, Mike Mitchell Junior, represented him
on Sunday at the Cavalier's Wall of Honor ceremonies. His
(26:43):
remarks were riveting. We'll hear from Mike Mitchell Junior, the
son of Cavs legend Mike Mitchell after this on Cavs HQ,
presented by Betway on the Medical Mutual Cavaliers audio verse.
Speaker 4 (27:00):
From twenty two. Off the back of the Rim, No good, Mitchell,
the rebot back up and down the Florida Mitchoe. Here
he goes pees.
Speaker 3 (27:08):
Mike Mitchell, Metchell.
Speaker 4 (27:09):
Into the fourth court. Mitchell right on a lane, put
up the twelve foot good Mike Mitchell.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
Cut the back down to three thirty two for Mitchell.
Joe Tate calling some of the great plays from the
great Mike Mitchell. Joe always said he thought Mike Mitchell
was one of the best ever to suit up for
the Cavaliers. Mike had a short career in Cleveland, but boy,
he made his mark when he was here. Of course,
(27:36):
he was an All Star in nineteen eighty one was
named the MVP of the All Star Game at the
Old Coliseum. Back that season, he averaged twenty four point
five points per game, and in his three plus years
with the Cavaliers he averaged over nineteen per game. He
had an outstanding career. Sadly, Mike passed away in twenty eleven,
but his son, Mike Mitchell Junior, proudly represented his five
(28:00):
at the Cavaliers while of honor ceremonies on Sunday. So
let's hear what Mike Mitchell Junior had to say about
his dad in his career.
Speaker 9 (28:08):
First, I want to thank you for that introduction, whoever
made that video. I have some bones to pick with
you because you took most of my speaking points today,
I want to thank these gentlemen over here. Without them,
I know we wouldn't be here today, standing here in
the honor. My father was a great basketball player, but
that doesn't mean everybody has to acknowledge it. And the
simple fact that you all thought enough of him to
(28:30):
bring him here along with some of his former players colleagues,
it really means a tremendous much a lot to me
and my family. Speaking of that, could anybody that is
a sister brother, whether it's blood or not, child, our
grandchild of Mike Mitchell, please stand up. Of course, my
(29:00):
little one is sleep so she didn't want to stand up.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
You can see.
Speaker 9 (29:06):
We brought a small team to stand behind me to
make sure I wasn't up here by myself. But I
really have to highlight somebody. My dad would kill me
if I didn't. At the age of nine years old,
we were leaving a building one day and my mom
tripped and fell and my dad made sure she was okay,
and then he turned it. He looked at me and
I said, what's going on here? He said, how'd you
(29:27):
let your mom fall? And I said, I was behind
her coming out the door. I didn't know she fell
and he said, you're not answering my question. How did
you let your mom fall? And I said I don't know,
and I kind of looked down, and he gave me
one of those stern hit to the chest. He said, hey,
I expect more out of you. Never let that woman fall.
He wasn't talking literally all the time, although then he was,
(29:50):
but he was talking figuratively. But I have been since
then made sure I've tried my best not to let
her fall. I'm gonna ask Diana Mitchell to please stand
up and stay there for a minute.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
Please stand up.
Speaker 9 (30:07):
The reason why, and I'm speaking basketball terms so you
can understand me. The reason why I'm gonna ask her
to stand up for a minute is because Mike Mitchell
had some good seasons. He had some bad seasons, he
had some really terrible seasons, and he had some excellent seasons.
And that woman right there was beside him the entire time.
He had some great ten members, none better than her,
(30:29):
And so I had to make sure everybody in this
room can acknowledge the fact that Mike Mitchell had a
great teammate. Mike Mitchell to basketball player. Now y'all heard
that twenty four point five points a game, top five
to six in the.
Speaker 3 (30:47):
NBA at that time.
Speaker 9 (30:49):
I like to think I was born in eighty one
might have had something to do with it. He had
a namesake. He actually named me on TV. But I
can't take credit for that game. That game started a
long time before I arrived, and he just was able
to keep it going. I'm gonna talk a little bit
about what I know, all right, y'all, let me humor
myself for a little bit. So Mike Mitchell, at forty
(31:11):
years old, was playing in Italy. He played eleven seasons
after he left the NBA. At forty years old, he
was averaging twenty nine points a game. Y'all know what
that ranked over in the Italian League? Number one.
Speaker 3 (31:28):
Y'all know what the.
Speaker 9 (31:29):
Italian league was ranked at that time, the number two
league behind the NBA. He was still a scoring machine.
You want to know who took his place the next year,
his final year, his final year. You want to know
who the only person that was scoring more points than
him was. I know, y'all probably don't, Oh I saw it.
Man new Genobili. Eh Man, new Genobili was averaging more
(31:50):
points before he came and joined the Spurs. So at Manu,
a young, healthy, vibrant man Nu and my dad. I
get to tell people that story because it's wonderful to speak.
A tremendous player. He was that jumping ability that y'all
saw on the screen. I didn't know that Mike Mitchell.
I wondered where I got it from. I had a
forty inch vertical in high school, and I said, this
must have came by myself. What I didn't realize he
(32:12):
had two knee surgeries and his right knee and a
third one in his left knee by that time, so
it robbed him of that. But what I can tell
you about Mike Mitchell the Spurs Mike Mitchell is he
was second on that team in scoring the entire time
he was there until he became first in scoring.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
He replaced a.
Speaker 9 (32:28):
Guy by the name of Iceman George Gervan. I don't
know if y'all ever heard of him. He's a little
Hall of famer, that's who he was playing with and
shooting with. My dad always wanted to instill work ethic
in me and didn't allow me to talk on the
basketball court. I came up in an era where you
started letting people know what you did right. So you
shot a basket, you hit it, you pounded your chest.
Speaker 3 (32:49):
I did that.
Speaker 9 (32:49):
My dad looked at the coach and told him to
call a time out. I went to the sideline and
my dad said, we don't do that. He said, if
you want to continue to play basketball, you come, you
play hard, and you let other people know how good
you are by your performance on the court. I wondered why,
and I got to see why. That's why he did that.
He always wanted to let people know. He always wanted
(33:10):
to let me know that you didn't have to talk
about your game. You had to show it right. And
these guys probably know better than I do. If somebody
start talking to him a little extra, he might have
gave him that forty.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
Piece and told him to go sit down. I asked him.
Speaker 9 (33:23):
I said, you never talked to guys on the court.
He said nope, he said, who hold hold? I did
talk to coaches. And I said, what'd you talk to coaches?
He said, I'd walk by and tell the coach if
you don't get control of him real soon, I will.
And what did that mean?
Speaker 3 (33:37):
He mean? He was gonna go off real quick, go
for twenty points?
Speaker 9 (33:40):
In a quarter and they were gonna go sit him
down or he was gonna get in foul trouble. These
gentlemen grew up at a time where if somebody started
going off, you took five of those six files real quick,
and then if you could not stop him, you sit down.
And then in the media what you do he said, Oh,
I would have controlled Mike Mitchell had I not got
six files and had to sit down. Next time, I'll
try to put forth better effort. These guys get the
(34:00):
itis these days, so they see a star coming to
the arena these days and they say, oh, you're gonna
have to go up against the score and they say, oh, well,
you know my ankle hurting a little bit, I'm gonna
go ahead and sit down. That was Mike Mitchell as
a basketball player. He never backed away from anyone. As
a matter of fact, his only thing on the court
that he really wished she accomplished, because he didn't care
(34:21):
about the single accomplishments, was a championship. He always wanted
to have a championship, and he never got to do
that in the NBA. He got a chance in the
second division overseas to do that. And you want to
talk about happy, and it just showed me how much
winning was part of his DNA, how important winning was.
Speaker 3 (34:37):
He didn't care.
Speaker 9 (34:38):
As a matter of fact, if my dad was here today,
besides laughing with you all, he probably would have been
set down already because he just didn't care about individual awards,
but his family. He would have stand here and he
would try to talk to you because he would want
his family to know how good of a player he was,
how good of a man he was, and he'd love
(34:59):
for us to be able to see that. Unfortunately he's
not here anymore. But I understand it because I had
some years. I didn't make it to the level maybe
that I wanted to, but I.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Had some years. But all that doesn't matter anymore.
Speaker 9 (35:10):
If you don't mind, I'm gonna switch and I'm gonna
talk about Mike Mitchell to man of just a little
bit more. Growing up, I always would sit around and
want to do stuff with my family members, and then
I'd also want to go back to my room, close
the door and kind of shelter away and just be
by myself. And my dad would come back to the
room and he said, I need to take these hinges off,
open this door, and I say, what's wrong? Why are
(35:33):
you opening the door. You're at home with family. At
the minimum, you need to have this door open. But
even if you just want to come, grab some toys
and play in the living room, that way the family
could be there. Right, Christmas time came and you want
to talk about being more excited than children, And I said, Dad,
why are you so excited because my family's coming right.
(35:54):
He always wanted to be around family anytime there was
somebody else being celebrated. My father could be overseas in
Italy and find out you did wonderful. I can't take
time off for Mark Canton. He would fly in for
that just to make sure. Wanting to be around family
in the summertime because he was playing so much overseas,
(36:14):
he bought a motor home so that we could tour
the country and go park in Atlanta, where there were
plenty of houses in family members' houses. We go park
the motor home in Atlanta for a month and a
half so that we could be around family.
Speaker 3 (36:29):
My dad swore to it to the day he left.
Speaker 9 (36:32):
If you were around family, you were around love, and
you could accomplish anything you wanted to in life. So
before I take too long and I lose you, because
I know that's what's about to happen, I am going
to step away, and I want to sincerely, sincerely thank
everybody for being here. If you didn't know how good
he was. Take that little cell phone device out Google,
(36:53):
Mike Mitchell and this beautiful thing right, and I want
to say thank you for letting us come. Really appreciate
all that hospitality. And from the bottom of everybody over
there's hearts. I know they also would like to thank
everyone appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Well, that's some great stuff from Mike Mitchell Junior again
representing his dad on Sunday at the Cavaliers Wall of
Honors ceremonies here at Rocket Mortgage field House. It was
a very very special afternoon. We'll take a quick time out.
