(01:00):
armor of a gospel defender, a surrey.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
A surrey.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Id always be a godspool.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Ladies and gentlemen. After Apostle Paul came to the city
of Corinth on his second missionary journey, he wrote to
them in his first epistle, when I came to you,
I did not come with excellence of speech or wisdom,
declaring to you the testimony of God, for I determined
(01:51):
not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and
Him crucified. I was with you in weeks, in fear
and in much trembling, except for the part concerning Jesus
Christ and Him crucified. Old Testament Jonah could have said
(02:12):
the same thing when he stepped into the city of Nineveh.
I determined not to know anything among you except the
message that the Lord sent me to preach to you.
I came to you in weakness, fear, and trembling because
of what I had just gone through inside the belly
(02:33):
of a great fish before I arrived inside your city limits.
I don't know how recently it had been since Jonah
had been vomited on to dry land from the belly
of that great fish that had been prepared by the Lord,
but it was recent enough for Jonah to remember what
(02:56):
that was like, and he wanted no part of that again.
When the Lord had told Jonah the second time to
go to Ninevah, that great city, and preach to it
the message that I tell you, Jonah arose and went.
No questions asked, no running and no hiding, no equivocating,
(03:20):
no hesitation. He went One sea creuise inside the belly
of a fish was enough. He had no desire to
set sail ever again, at least not inside the bowels
of a fish. As we have seen. As soon as
Jonah stepped foot inside the city of Ninevah, he preached
(03:43):
God's message of repentance. It was not only a message
calling for repentance. It was a message of judgment, God's judgment.
Yet forty days and Ninevah shall be overthrown was not
going to be overthrown by a foreign nation or an
(04:04):
outside army. One far greater than any nation or any
army was going to do this. God the Creator was
going to do this because of the sins of Nineveh
or any Ninevite. Had to do. To know whether or
not God could do this was to look back to
(04:25):
the days of Noah. God did it to the entire world.
Doing it to their puny city posed no problem for him.
If further proof was needed, they could look back to
the history of the city of Babel. God did it
to that city, and he could do it to their city.
(04:47):
If more evidence was required, they could look back to
the days of Sodom and Gomorrah. He did it to
those two cities, and he could do it again. And
by the way, not only can God do it again,
he will do it again with the wicked world in
which we live. Apostle Peter prophesied in Second Peter three,
(05:11):
verse seven that the heavens and the earth are now
reserved for a fire until the day of judgment and
perdition of ungodly men. These words of prophecy were not
written on a placard strapped on the front and back
of some cartoon doom dayist character walking the streets of
(05:33):
one of our great metropolises. They were written in the
celestial road map, showing the way to the new Jerusalem.
Ladies and gentlemen, Doomsday is coming. In spite of the
scoffers who ridicule this truth. Jonah's message to Nineveh was
one of repentance and judgment, but it also was a
(05:58):
message of mercy and grace. Mercy and grace from God,
the creator. Nineveh had forty days to get right with God,
forty days to repent. God would wait no longer than
that for them to get right with him. Noah's generation
had one hundred and twenty years to get right, and
(06:21):
only eight souls did. How many years you and I
have We do not know. Our personal judgment day is uncertain,
but it will follow on the heels of our death.
It is written in Hebrews nine, verse twenty six that
it is appointed for men to die once, but after
(06:43):
this the judgment Christ speaks in Matthew twenty five of
the day of judgment for all the nations. We know
not when that will be, but we can rest assured
it will be laugh ridicule scoff if you wish, but
it matters not. God will have the last laugh. In
(07:07):
the meantime, you too would be well advised to take
advantage of God's grace and mercy that is extended to
you while you still have the time to get right
with God. In this message, we will not look at
the message of Jonah, but at the manifestation of repentance
(07:29):
because of his message. The first thing we are told
about this manifestation is what is said about two groups
of people. The first group is the masses of people.
In verse five, it is written, so the people of
Nineveh believed God proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth,
(07:52):
from the greatest to the least of them. Jonah three,
verse five is all the proof we need to know
that the repented at Jonah's preaching. But for those who
need additional proof, Matthew twelve, verse forty one is provided.
It records the statement that Jesus made about this. He said,
(08:17):
the men of nine the will rise up in the
judgment with this generation and condemn it because they repented
at the preaching of Jonah. Those who consider the story
of Jonah to be a fairy tale, a fabrication of
deluded Bible writers, will have to take this up with
(08:38):
Jesus when they stand before him to be judged. Jesus
believed it and recommended that some of the scribes and
Pharisees who wanted to see a sign from him consider
the fact that one greater than Jonah was in their midst.
Pagans repented at the preaching of Jonah, while the religious
(09:01):
elites ridiculed the preaching of God's only begotten son. That
the ninevehtch repented of their wickedness is evidenced by three
things they did. For one thing, the people of Nineveh
believed God. There were no atheists among them. There were
no doubters in the crowd. They believed the word of
(09:25):
God's prophet with no questions asked. No one stood up
and said, surely a God of love would not do
what you are suggesting, Jonah, What kind of God is
it that you serve? They heard the word of God,
and they believed the word of God true biblical Repentance
(09:47):
from sin does not happen unless and until one believes
the message of God. Repentance does not precede belief any
more than eating the fish precedes catching one. You must
have a fish to eat one, and you must have
faith in God's word to repent. And yet there are
(10:11):
those among us who do not believe this. Not only
would the Ninevites rise up in the judgment with the
generation living at the time of Jesus and condemn it
for not believing and repenting, you will also rise up
at the judgment of any generation of unbelievers. We have
(10:33):
more proof of God's existence and God's truth in this
twenty first century generation than any generation before us. Two
thousand more years of proof historical, geographical, scientific, anthropological, and
other evidences have multiplied dozens of times over that period
(10:58):
to substantiate the validity of God's word. Not that it
needs it, but nevertheless there it is only a fool
would say in his heart there is no God. But
the world has its fair share of such fools. Evidence
that the Ninevites repented is seen not only by their belief.
(11:22):
It is also evident in that they proclaimed a fast
men and women old and young high and low kept
a fast. They abstained from both food and drink. It
was not their physical bodies that needed attention, It was
their spiritual relationship with God and his word that needed attention.
(11:46):
There were wicked people living in a wicked city who
were slated for destruction except they repent of their wickedness
and acknowledged the authority of God's word. America is not
exempt from such a threat. The best thing for America
(12:08):
is not more laws, not more social programs, not more
free lunches. The best thing for America is for her
to repent of her sins. We would name them, but
we have only less than thirty minutes. The Ninophtes believed,
they repented, They fasted, and they put on sackcloth. They
(12:31):
were unashamed to openly admit they were not right with God.
They publicly showed their belief in the prophet's message by
wearing sackcloth. What they wore was an outward sign of
their inward repentance. America is unashamed. Also, at least a
(12:52):
large segment of her population is unashamed. She is unashamed
to publicly shun God in his word from the public square.
She is unashamed of being naked of the armor of God.
She is unashamed of being naked of the righteousness of Christ.
(13:12):
She has removed sin from her vocabulary. Sin does not exist.
Murder is excused, abortion is defended. Drug addiction and alcohol
abuse earn people rights that the sober do not have.
Theft is rewarded. Shacking up and having babies out of
(13:33):
wedlock is the norm. Marrying the same sex is legitimized.
Choosing to identify as being the opposite of one's birth
gender is courageous, brave, and honored. What is shameful is
daring to preach these things. The unashamed say. Preaching these
(13:54):
things is hate speech. I don't know how wicked the
Ninevites were that god God's attention to send Jonah to them,
but surely America is close to needing a jonah. Actually,
the preachers of the Gospel are supposed to be preaching jonahs,
but even some of America's preachers need to repent. The
(14:18):
second group of Ninevites that manifested repentance was the monarch
and nobles who were over the people. Then word came
to the King of Nineveh, and he arose from his
throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth,
and sat in ashes. First among this group the manifest
(14:40):
repentance was the King of Nineveh. He was a pagan,
but Jonah's message was so powerful that it was able
to reach his heart. He too repented. His lofty position
did not exempt him from needing to humble himself at
the preaching of God's word, and he did. His repentance
(15:03):
was manifested in his trading his robe for sackcloth, his
throne for ashes, and his will or his creator's will,
and he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout
Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles.
(15:23):
Jonah took no one with him to Nineveh to propagate
the message of his God, as did Apostle Paul in
his three missionary journeys in the Book of Acts, But
he too had assistance. His assistants were the pagan King
of Nineveh and his nobles, to see that the job
(15:45):
gets done. When God wants his message to be preached
and propagated, he will do what mortal men cannot do.
He will raise up helpers, even those who have no
room for God in their own life. Cyrus and Diyrius,
kings of Persia, were used of God to have the
(16:07):
House of the Lord restored after its destruction by the
army of Nebukanezer. God used the heathen king our Taxerxes
to assist Nehemion in the rebuilding of the walls that
surrounded Jerusalem. Sometimes it appears that Heathens are more receptive
(16:28):
to the program of God than are his own people.
The King of Nineveh and his nobles issued a decree
throughout the city. Let neither man, nor beast, herd, nor
flock taste anything. Do not let them eat or drink water,
But let man and beast be covered with sackcloths and
(16:49):
crime mightily to God. Yes, let everyone turn from his
evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.
The king and his nobles not legislate laws to outlaw
God's word. They decreed that Nineveh hear and obeyed God's word.
The entire city was to repent, turn from his evil
(17:12):
way and from the violence that is in his hands.
Even the peaces of the field were to be covered
with sackcloth and crime mightily to God. Mumus and Babaz
filled the airwaves. This whole affair was a national affair
that affected even the animal kingdom. The resolution of it
(17:35):
was led by the monarch and his nobles. We can
hardly imagine what might happen in the United States if
all her mayors, governors, representatives, senators, president and his cabinet,
and those who sit on the powerful seats of the
Supreme Court would fall to their knees and ask God
(17:56):
for wisdom in leading this country back to some semblance
of what it was in the beginning of its founding.
Unrighteous laws would be rescinded, restoration of righteousness would be enacted.
But it is not enough to pray and fast and
cry out to God. There must be repentance. Morality will
(18:20):
be legislated only when leaders repent and confess their own
sins before God and cry out to God for his
forgiveness and guidance. Verse nine is a testimony that Ninevah
did not hide from their sin. They did not excuse
their sin, they did not deny their sin. They threw
(18:41):
themselves at the feet of God Almighty for mercy and forgiveness.
Like Jonah in the belly of the great fish. The
Ninevites had hope as long as they were alive. How
long this nation has is anyone's guests. How long you
have is anyone's guests. How long the church that Jesus
(19:03):
built is anyone's guess. The King of Jonah three is
a great example of the humiliation that is required before
a city, a government, a school, a family, or a
congregation of God's people can be right with God. I'm
speaking to beloved brethren who right now are in congregations, families,
(19:26):
marriages that are unrighteous messes. They are in unrighteous messes
because God's word is not followed. Solutions are sought from
worldly sources. It will never work. The Church is not
of the world. Marriages and families who profess to be
(19:47):
followers of Christ will never straighten out their messes by
trying to implement some scheme that has been devised by
the world. Books written by the world, seminars taught by
the world, and programs designed by the world do not
have the answers. The answer begins by doing what Nineveh did,
(20:09):
repent and obey God. JONAHT. Three is about the mission
of Jonah, the message of Jonah, and the manifestation of repentance.
He closes in verse ten with the mercy of God.
Then God saw their works that they turned from their
evil way, and God relented from the disaster that he
(20:31):
had said he would bring up on them, and he
did not do it. God repented of the disaster he
was going to bring up on Nineveh. Why you ask,
the answer is because he saw their works they turned
from their evil way. This is relevant to our own salvation.
(20:52):
The Ninevites believed God, they repented, They even prayed, including
the King of Nineveh and his nobles. But that was
not enough. It is written that it was when God
saw their works and their turning from their evil way,
that he relented from doing the disaster that he had
(21:12):
said he would bring upon them. In this New Testament
dispensation of the Church Age, it is still necessary to
believe and repent, but that alone is not enough to
receive salvation from sin by the blood of Christ. Christendom
is filled with people who say they believe what the
Bible says and who have repented change the direction of
(21:37):
their lives, but they have not been washed in the
blood that forgives sins, even though the vast majority of
denominationalism denies it. That washing is received only when one
is immersed in water in the name of Jesus Christ
into the death of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.
(21:58):
It was in his death that Christ shed his blood.
When a believing, repentant person seeking forgiveness is immersed into
bout death, that is where and that is when forgiveness
is received. The moment man ceases to rebel against God
and repents. God is ready to forgive, but only on
(22:21):
his terms, not ours. God has no pleasure in the
death of the wicked. In Ezekiel eighteen, verse twenty three,
God asks, do I have any pleasure at all? That
the wicked should die? And not that he should turn
from his ways and live. The Bible says the Lord
is not willing that any should perish, but that all
(22:42):
should come to repentance. True Biblical repentance includes obedience, and
obedience for salvation includes being baptized for salvation. The problem
some unbelievers have with believing that the Bible is God's
Word is not the Book of Jonah, and the problem
in Christianity is not the truth written in the book.
(23:08):
The problem in both cases is that only a few
ever read the book. The Navots heard the word and obeyed.
Can this be said of you?
Speaker 1 (23:22):
There's a battle going on for the soul of me.
He's the worthy. But I am saying within the arms,
