Speaker 4 (01:28):
Ladies and gentlemen. We are taking a journey with Jonah
through the Old Testament book that bears his name. It
was in the first part of Jonah one that we
witnessed Jonah's rebellion against God, when he refused to go
to Ninevah and cry against it. It was in the

(01:52):
second part of that chapter that we saw Jonah repent
by telling pagan mariners to throw him into the sea.
Then in Jonah too, we heard with our own ears
Jonah's request to be delivered from the belly of a
great fish that had been prepared by the Lord for

(02:12):
Jonah's salvation. While with him in that smelly, stinken belly,
we hurt his cry, and we saw him in his confinement. Now,
continuing our journey with Jonah, we have come to chapter three,
in which we hear the Lord charging Jonah with the

(02:33):
same commission as the first one he received, go to
Nineveh and cry out against it. In the first two
verses of this chapter, not only are we reminded of
the mission of Jonah, but also was he now The
word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, Arise,

(02:56):
go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it
the message that I tell you. For three days and
three nights, he had been in the belly of the fish,
after having been thrown over the side of a ship,
into the deep waters of a tempestuous sea, and into

(03:17):
the mouth of a great fish, and the fish took
him down under. In some ways, his surroundings were like
being in hell, but he wasn't in hell. There was
water swirling around him. In hell there is no water. Also,
unlike Hell, Jonah got another chance at life to obey

(03:40):
the Lord there are no second chances at life in hell.
If Luke sixteen teaches us anything about what happens to
those who died lost in their sins, it's that no
do overs, no in reincarnations, no more opportunity to get

(04:00):
right with God. The books are closed, and the judgment
of Christ is next. Before we get ahead of ourselves,
we must note that Jesus likened Jonah's burial in the
belly of the Great Fish to his being buried for
three days and three nights in the heart of the earth,

(04:23):
although Christ did not mention it. When Jonah was vomited
from the belly of the Great Fish in the last
verse of Chapter two, that too prefigured our Lord's resurrection
from the heart of the earth. Just as Jonah could
not be held in the fish's belly, our Lord's body

(04:44):
could not be held in the borrowed tomb of Joseph
of Arimathea. Our Lord's body wasn't vomited from that tomb.
It was resurrected from it. Apostle Peter preached and Acts
two verse twenty four that it was not possible that he,
Jesus should be held by death. We would be remiss

(05:09):
if we were not to remind each one listening of
one more scriptural truth, symbolized by Jonah's being swallowed and
vomited by the great fish. There are those who would
prefer that I not mentioned this, but I cannot restrain myself.
When Jonah was thrown into the water, he went down

(05:32):
as an unsaved man outside of the will of his
creator Father. When he came up out of the water,
he came up as a saved man, saved physically and
saved spiritually from the consequences of his disobedience to his Lord.
All of this is a good picture of what takes

(05:54):
place when a man who was lost in his sins,
unsaved spiritually, goes under for the Lord. When he repents
and is baptized, he goes down lost in his sins
and comes up saved from his sins. We frequently meet

(06:16):
jonahs in this present life who, for whatever reason, decide
to run from God in disobedience. They have no room
or any desire for God or his word for them.
The things of this world are far more attractive than
they're having a save relationship with their Creator. But for

(06:39):
some of these Jonahs, a time comes when they happen
to hear the gospel message of Jesus Christ and discover
that it is powerful, compelling good news. They have a
good heart and get hooked just like a fish by
the gospel message. They listen, they study, they investigate, and

(07:04):
they ask themselves, why am I against this? What is
there in life more important than being a disciple of
the Lamb of God? What must I do to be
one of his followers? When they hear the Bibles answer,
they repent of their sins and are baptized in water

(07:26):
in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of
their sins. They go down under the water in their
sins and come up out of the water without their sins,
just like the eunuch in Acts chapter eight, washed cleansed
in the blood of the Lamb. Their obedience is the

(07:48):
re enactment of Romans chapter six. They are buried with
him through baptism into death and are raised from the dead,
resurrected to walk in newness of life. In their baptism,
their old man was crucified with him, and they became
a new creation. Jonah went overboard, went down into the

(08:14):
waters of a tempestuous sea, and came up as a
brand new creation. His mind was renewed, transformed. The God
who had commissioned him to go to Nineveh was now
not only his creator, he was his lord and master.
It took his being chastised by his Lord before he

(08:37):
got the message, but he got it. Such is the
case with some among us today. It sometimes takes a
catastrophe in life before God gets their attention. If you
are going through some sort of catastrophe in life, thank
God for it. It may be God sending you a

(09:00):
wake up call before it is too late. When Jonah
was vomited on to dry land, he may have been dirty, smelly,
and ugly, but he was a changed man. Such was
not the case with God. He had not changed. He
is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The only hope

(09:22):
Jonah had was to repent and submit to the lordship
of Yahweh. Yahweh was under no obligation to repent and
submit to Jonah. The Creator is not in debt to
anyone of his creation. His commission to Jonah was the
same as it was at the beginning. Go to Nineveh

(09:46):
and preach the same message he was told to preach
in the first place. Repent of your sins. Almighty God
was persistent. He was the determined to save Jonah, and
he was determined to save the Ninevites. That God is
still persistent to save whosoever will bow their knee to

(10:10):
the sovereignty of his only begotten son, Jesus of Nazareth,
the Christ, Ladies and gentlemen, be not deceived. The day
is coming when that God's long suffering will come to
an end. The day of the Lord will come as
a thief in the night, in which the heavens will

(10:30):
pass away with a great noise, and the elements will
melt with pervent heat. Both the earth and the works
that are in it will be burned up. Preach to
Nineveh the message that I tell you. God did not change,
and the message did not change, but Jonah did. Instead

(10:52):
of running from Nineveh, he ran to Nineveh to preach
the message. He preached the message. It is John the
Baptizer and Jesus the Christ preached repent for the Kingdom
of Heaven is hand. He preached the message. Peter the
Apostle preached repent, and let every one of you be

(11:14):
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission
of sins. He preached the message Paul the Apostle preached.
God now commands all men everywhere to repent. It is
the message that men must hear until Jesus comes again. Repent, Repent,

(11:36):
Repent Twice. In the Old Testament Book of Judges, it
is written that everyone did what was right in his
own eyes. It is still true of the world in
which we live today. Everyone does what is right in
their own eyes. A man would have to be blind

(11:58):
not to see it. Lawlessness, chaos, corruption, rebellion, disrespect, and
open blatant sin permeates America. Law officers are shot and
killed with few, if any consequences. Schools are run by
students who haven't reached puberty. Businesses are looted in broad daylight,

(12:24):
and people are encouraged to do it. Social media is
a platform that spews in civility. The Internet distributes images
and speech that at one time could not be seen
or heard anywhere except in porn stores. Every one does
his or her own thing without shame, guilt, censorship, or consequences.

(12:50):
While preachers of the Gospel of Truth are accused of
unrighteous judgment when they preach messages calling for repentance. The
world is upside down, standing on its head, going to
Hell faster than ever. The only hope the world has
is to hear the same message Jonah was sent to

(13:11):
preach to Nineveh repent. Jonah was now a different man.
Now he was ready, Now he was prepared, Now he
was fired up. He had learned an important lesson in
the belly of that great fish. The whole duty of
mine is to fear God and keep his commindments. The

(13:34):
Ninevites were not going to come to Jonah. Jonah had
to go to them. This is also true for the
church that Jesus built. Lost people are not going to
run to a local church building to elbow their way
into a pew. The commission of the Lord's Church is

(13:55):
not stand by to hold the church doors open so
every creature can come in. The commission of the church
is to go into all the world and preach the
Gospel to every creature. The church in the Acts eight
four passage, believe the Lord. She went everywhere preaching the Word.

(14:18):
She did what the Lord said she would do. In
Matthew twenty two, verse nine, she went out into the
highways and gathered together all whom they found. The twenty
first century church has forgotten the Lord's plan for evangelism.
It isn't to put on a good show and hope
people will come. It is to preach the good Gospel

(14:40):
message and exhort people to obey that message. Jonah was
not only prepared to do the assignment given to him
by God, he was privileged to have another chance to
do it. His recommission was a demonstration of God's grace,
barns and patience and mercy. Is marvelous. I know, I

(15:06):
stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene, and
wonder how he could love me, a sinner, condemned, unclean. Oh,
how marvelous, Oh how wonderful? And my song shall ever be? Oh,
how marvelous, Oh, how wonderful is my Savior's love for me.

(15:29):
It is said that God is a god of second chances.
I do not believe that for one minute, second chances
short change the long suffering of God Almighty. Apostle Peter
wrote in Second Peter three, verse nine, the Lord is
long suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish,

(15:52):
but that all should come to repentance. For as long
as we are alive. He is a god of multiple chances.
For the child of God. Apostle John wrote in First
John one, verse nine, if we confess our sins, he
is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. There is no cap

(16:16):
on the number of times we can do that, and
thank God for that. Most of us must practice First
John one, verse nine on a daily basis for the loss.
They can come to Christ any hour of any day
of any knight in repentance to be immersed for their salvation,

(16:40):
and then claim First John one, verse nine for themselves.
The Philippian jailer and his household were immersed for salvation
after midnight. People of both the Old and the New
Testaments were given additional chances while they were alive. Abraham
lied in Genesis about his wife Sarah and was given

(17:02):
another chance. Jacob lied to Isaac, and God used him
to build the nation of Israel. Moses killed a man,
and God called him to lead his people. King David
committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband Uriah killed,
but is called a man after God's own heart. The

(17:24):
prodigal son of Luke fifteen wasted his possessions with prodigal living,
came to himself, arose and went to his father and
was welcomed back into the family. John Mark forsook and
Barnabas on Paul's first missionary journey, but was still profitable

(17:45):
to Paul and his ministry. Apostle Peter denied the Lord
three times in John eighteen, but the Lord forgave him
in John twenty one, verse nineteen. Jesus told Peter to
follow him, and he did. He was the first person
to preach the first recorded gospel message that told men

(18:07):
and women, boys and girls, how to be saved from sin.
And it wasn't by praying a sinner's prayer, by paying indulgences,
or by faith only. Salvation was received by obeying the
God ordain requirements to receive salvation, repent and let every

(18:29):
one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive
the gift of a holy spirit. Peter preached that same
message to the day of his death. Ladies and gentlemen
of Abraham, Jacob, Moses, David, John Mark, Peter, the Prodigal Boy,

(18:52):
and Jonah could be given another chance while alive, So
can you. Even those who crucified the only begotten Son
of God were given another chance from his cross. He
prayed to his father for those who nailed him to it. Father,
forgive them, for they do not know what they do.

(19:13):
Ladies and gentlemen. If Christ is willing to forgive those
who are not yet covered with his blood, how much
more is he willing to forgive those who are covered
with his blood. Romans five, verse eight is the message
of forgiveness. God demonstrates his own love toward us in
that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

(19:36):
When Jonah got to Ninevah, he was to preach to
it the message that God told him to preach. The
mission had not changed, and the message had not changed.
Because the mess had not changed, it was still a
great city filled with wickedness. It was a great city
filled with great sin. If Jonah had balked in the

(19:57):
beginning because of the message, it didn't matter. God did
not rewrite the message to suit the messenger. He still doesn't.
He writes the message to save the lost. God's word
is unalterable. It will never be changed. To tickle the
ears of those who hear it, or to make those

(20:18):
who preach it feel more comfortable. It wasn't changed in
the first century, and it will not be changed in
the twenty first century, although some of its preachers have
tried at the risk of losing their lives. Apostles Peter
and John answered their accusers and Acts four verses nineteen
and twenty for preaching in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

(20:41):
Whether it is right in the sight of God to
listen to you more than to God, you judge, for
we cannot but speak the things which we have seen
and heard. Apostle Paul, in his farewell meeting with the
elders from the church in Ephesus, said in Acts twenty,
verse twenty kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed

(21:03):
it to you, and taught you publicly and from house
to house. Repeating himself, he told them in verse twenty seven,
I have not shunned to declare to you the whole
counsel of God. Ladies and gentlemen, It is the same
old message year after year. It wasn't written to suit us.

(21:23):
It was written to save us. Repent, for the Kingdom
of Heaven is at hand. The world changes fads change
culture's change, but the word of God is never changing.
The salvation of the salvation message of the apostle Peter

(21:45):
in Acts chapter two is still there in the book.
After hundreds of years have come and gone, repent and
let every one of you be baptized and the name
of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. This message
began with Jonah laying on the dry land of some

(22:06):
beach resort near Japan, covered with the vomit of the
great fish that God had prepared specifically to bring Jonah
to his senses and to repentance prayerfully. This message has
worked the same way with you. God was not finished

(22:26):
with Jonah, and God is not finished with you. Jonah
had a great work to do in a great city.
In the next message, Jonah will arise in obedience to
do that work. We do not know what work God

(22:48):
has for you to do in his glorious eternal kingdom
on earth, his Church. Whatever it may be, it will
be an important work. But first you lock Jonah and
Locksaul of Tarsus, must arise and be baptized and wash

(23:11):
away your sins.
