Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sweet take a good record. Then we have a superson.
D J makes it within Dizziasm and that's the superson
g m h. Beche going to work the holiday. I
(00:26):
was tipped by a crime to keep active. It shot
clocks down to six menchels death back for three shot
do minute. It's the good broadcasting Live is from Rocket
Mortgage Field House, all those sunny shores of beautiful Lake Erie.
(00:48):
Here Holiday Ruvio started through more leave em the second night,
Say oct in downtown Cleveland. Hello, Hello, you tuned in
(01:11):
to Wine and Go Radio. Now you're your host Rafa
and jo Gi. No shirt, no shoes you Hey everybody,
and welcome to episode something. I don't know what episode
we're on, but uh it's a special New York episode
(01:36):
of Wine and Gold Radio. Minute if you if it
is that, why don't you say Live New York Wine
and Gold Radio. That might be trademarked. We may get
lawsuit for that. Anyway, we are here. I am Jo Gi.
Sitting to my left is Nandez Burrito, and we are
joined by our special guest today, the voice of the Cavaliers,
(01:57):
Juan Miguel Long Miguel Jan Miguel, Welcome show I guess
good to be back with you again. Won't the last
time we had you on? Man, it's been a while.
The last guess it was a trade deadline last year.
And we are coming to live from the NBA Players
Association where the team is practicing right now. Nice here,
(02:18):
it is really nice. I think we just passed. We
kind of found a little impromptu places to broadcast. We
just passed a big hot tub and we did. Boy,
she would have been nice to broadcast live in the
hot tub when I plan I had next year. Kind
of doesn't make any sense to go. John hasn't watched
the movie The Hot Tub. What we just learned that
we have a four hour flight from New York, So
John might be watching Hot Tub time Machine. There's only one.
(02:44):
I haven't even watched it, and I won't watch it.
I don't want to Sully Hot because I love that
movie so much. On the road, I have to say,
as long as we're talking road, I've kind of caught
up on some movies that I love, like I Revenge
of the Nerds, which I hadn't seen him forever, and
I watched it star Face Scarface and yeah, So anyway,
so so I've been catched up on that. But anyway,
(03:05):
we've been on the road. Tough loss last night at
the garden Um Donovan Mitchell didn't me a colpy after
the game, and I didn't even think he needed to
do that. I thought it was I thought he had
a great effort and you know, again he wanted up
tipping the ball to Mobile at the end of the game.
It was just tough loss. We always run into these
guys that are having like the night of their season.
(03:28):
What's his name, Julius. We know he's good, we know
he's a multi purple like multi tool guy, but like
what he had seventeen in the first quarter and thirty
what at the end of the game. He thought it
was just unreal the way he was hitting buckets from everywhere.
And you know, the nick thing to play always played
well against us. Yeah, he had a big game. I mean,
thirty six points, thirteen rebounds. He's been on some kind
(03:50):
of a terror. Seven of his eight previous games he
had fifteen or more rebounds, and they're gonna need that
with Mitchell Robinson being out of the lineup. That one
smarts for me. I mean, my approach this season in
terms of looking at the standings is let's just stay
in the top six. And I'm not you know, I'm
not saying, hey, let's aspire to greater heights, right to
be top four, to get home court advantage or whatnot.
(04:11):
But considering the way you know, you look at last
year had some injury problems down the stretch. We're in
really good shape at about this point last season, and
it didn't go the way we want to do, end
up in the playing tournament, and we all know how
that ended. So to me, right now, goal stay in
the top six. Do what you need to do, which
when we when we I like scoreboard watching, and I
love to be in a position when we're scoreboard watching,
because there were years where we weren't score We're watching
(04:33):
all season long. But the Atlanta's and the New York's
and Miami, all those teams, to me, route against them,
they're playing against the box of the Celtics, root for
the bucks of the Celtics. And that might be counterintuitive,
but because I know we're chasing those teams, But let's
get those middle teams out of there and preserve a
top six, right, And that's how I tend to look at.
I don't know if that's glass half four glass half,
(04:55):
I think I think classes up the right, that's the best.
But I think it's also interesting to note that we
are between us and Philadelphia, who is right now in
second as we're recording this. It's only two and a
half games different being in the top. That's right, right,
that's right. So at the same time I agree with
(05:16):
you with all that, I also the moment where you
know the the All Star break is coming, and then
usually we know what happens to some teams before they
get to the break and after they come to the break.
So this is the This is the kind of stretch
as well that our team gets on an game winning
streak and know that's it makes a huge Miami is
kind of figuring out getting healthy a little bit, you know,
(05:38):
always they always figure out at the end, and I
think it's gonna be an interesting stretch run and every
game matters. That's why, you know, the last night was difficult,
but it is next on to the next one. It's
a perfect example. And that they were the one seed
last year, right, I mean, and we're you know, we're
just past the midway point of the season and they
haven't been healthy all season long, but everybody knows what
(05:59):
my wrong. Torono was another team, and they've really had
an uneven start to their season or uneven first after
their seasons. So and they give Calves headaches, always give us.
This all plays out, but it's it's it's shaping up
to be a fun run here. Yeah. And also, I mean,
you have the trade deadline coming up and that's going
to reshape some teams, and I think teams are gonna
be active. Uh. Lakers made a pretty big movie the
(06:22):
other day to get Rehatch Mora Rui. It was a
nice player, you know, just before we came up here,
and we're gonna give a little inside basketball, I guess, uh.
And I asked JB about this last night, but he
had to play eleven guys last night that he had
to play eleven guys, but for the first time this year,
they had their full complement of players. I mean, everybody
was healthy and he had his he had his full
(06:43):
deck that he could play with and it didn't go
that great. The bench I think combined for twelve points
uneven And JB just talked to the players and he
talked about this last week with Ricky coming back with
Dean coming back, getting your full roster, some guys aren't
gonna play and some guys are gonna play uneven minutes
where you play a ton one night and not much
(07:05):
the next night. So I think that there's also going
to be a period here where they got to figure
out rotations, combinations, things like that, I think more than
anything else. In the last word, combination the ones that
actually work, especially coming off the bench. But they started
from what the numbers you just gave. They started to
crushed their starters last night. But it's just one of
those nights. But I think from what we know, it's
(07:30):
it's finally gonna be luckily to the for JB. We
have players in with the names like like Wade, Stevens
and and and Howl in this case that had shown
to be able to get themselves ready at any moments. Notice.
I think especially with how Netta, who'd also it is
probably the one they're gonna lose more minute out of
everybody else with Ricky back and trying to figure out.
(07:51):
But I like, John, what what what JB has said
to the guys straight up with trying it's gonna be bumpy.
But this is the way it's gonna be. So No,
there's no so prices for anybody in that rust, right
And you know JB doesn't want to run eleven guys
out there. You know, he said that a number of times.
It's just too many. You don't get your rhythm. That's
not what we want to do, you know. But it
was a game yesterday where he was trying out combinations
(08:13):
because things weren't working when a lot of those reserves
were in there. Let's not forget too that Ricky's not
up to a hundred percent speed. I would guess that
Dean Wade is yet to get back to a speed.
So that's still a work in progress. They'll figure it out,
you know that they'll figure out. We have a lot
of games still to go here in January. It is
not an easy schedule heading into that All Star break.
So it's yeah, it's a work in progress. I think
(08:34):
also work in progresses you know, the Garland Mitchell combination,
figuring that out as we continue to move forward. We
knew that that would be a work in progress all
season long, and we've seen instances and we've seen runs
where those two have been magnificent together. But I think
they'd be the first to tell you, Hey, when we're
both on the floor, we need to get our big
men a little bit more involved. We need to get
(08:56):
that ball working around a little bit more um and
we're gonna see how that progresses. I have faith, obviously,
like I think that Donovan Mitchell acquisition has been brilliant.
It's been wonderful. I have nothing but glowing things to
say about this. Yeah, I mean, I used having a
career of season here in Cleveland, his first one in
Northeast Ohio. I think it's it's a combination that's gonna work.
(09:16):
And when it does and when it finally clicks in,
I think we're gonna see some wonderful things. Let's not
forget it's January, guys. No NBA team is playing the
same in November as they are in January, as they
are in March, as they are in May. So anything
that's going on right now, let's just remember we got
a long wait with any team. Were way to go
and a lot of time to figure some things out.
And let's not forget we've got a very young team.
(09:37):
And Coach Low told me last night after the game
were having dinner and he goes, Listen, this is the
part of the growing that everybody talks about, like they
have to figure out every time we get to a
level to the next one, Like you know, those the
situational moments of the game, basketball situations in the basketball
game that they have to figure out on their own.
(09:57):
And remember two, we're fourty nine games into the season
and put themselves in a position where they're nine games
over five hundred. It's not like they're learning things in
there five D and they're swimming around on the eight
of the nine spot right now. They've put themselves in
a good position where they have a little bit of
leeway to learn something. So I think, you know, you
look at that first half of the season, had some
stretches where the Kives are playing some fantastic basketball, had
(10:19):
some losses that were difficult to take that are gonna
sit in the pit of your stomach for a while,
But overall, they put themselves in a nice position moving
in here to the second half. And you talked about
it with the combinations and things like that, we are
have a weird we're constituted in a strange way and
that we have to I don't say dominant big men,
but two big men that are very talented and need
(10:39):
the ball I think early in the game. And then
we have you know, obviously have two high octane guards.
So really you're gonna have to figure out this whole thing.
Who dominates the ball at what point in the game.
I personally think the calves are their best when they
get the big men going early. Um. But again that's
something that they're gonna we play no team ball, I think,
(11:01):
so you know, when when Garland has his regular twelve,
and then that means Leverage is going to have six
and and don't have a Mitchell four and and we
and everybody touches the ball and the JB always says
that if you're the guy that's supposed to shoot it,
the ball will find you. And guess what if we
know it, they I mean, everybody knows that they know
what they're trying to do. It just doesn't work out that,
(11:22):
you know. And some of that is the opponents of
it is the way they're being defended. They know what
they want to do. And if we're recognizing something, believe me,
it's only been recognized. Another thing, another thing worth noting.
It's also not that you mentioned that we're finally healthy.
Remember the beginning of the season that JB had talked
about that he wanted to have two or three guys
always on the court, that they had a combination of
five players that he always wanted two or three. Now
(11:45):
he can go back to that. And that's what we're
talking about, the rotations and and and coding it down
to eight nine. I mean, I don't know what the
number is but right right there. But but you know,
it is what it is. Yeah, and again some talented
players are gonna have to and they're gonna have to.
You know, you mentioned you'll get your shotting again. Guys
are guys are going to uh you know, you pray
(12:07):
that we're healthy for the rest of the year. You
know that's not gonna happen. Guys are gonna go out.
So and you saw it last year. We're in great
shape for most of the year and then big men
got hurt towards the end. And so I have a question.
Everybody's gonna play. You see that we have body luck
that always somebody is really hot against us from deep
I mean it is or it's just something that we
(12:27):
need to adjust offensively. I think it's it's the NBA,
and I think I think they'd tell you it's something
we need to figure out, right. I mean, you can't
go they've been a top two defense all season long.
You can't go about your business saying somebody's against every time.
We look. We got to figure this out, right, And
(12:49):
you saw adjustments on Randall after he had that scorching
first quarter. They slowed him down and started running him
off the line. Now in the late in the ball game,
guys start to get tired mentally physically. Randall perk back
up late in the ballgame when they needed him the most.
But they made the adjustments. It's just a matter of
being able to finish the deal. I think. Yeah. And again,
I mean it is the NBA, and especially this year. Man,
(13:11):
guys are putting up thirty fifty on a regular basis.
So okay, so we're not a basketball podcast. I know
whatever I gotta, but I have a question to bring
you drag you. Yeah, You're like, man, it's like I
didn't study for this. We thought we were. I'm like,
oh my god. Uh you guys back in the baskets
(13:35):
one of about basketball, but a little a little more different.
Why do you guys think of this pickup game that
they're going to be playing at the All Star break,
But when the teams are going to be picked right
there in the pregame, you'd be kind of like you're
in the playground and it'd be Lebron. I guess, and
who who's leading in these Um? Yeah it is. But
(13:58):
I'm saying they're gonna be pickle. I'll take that one, Okay,
I'll think that one. I like it better than what
they had been doing that draft on TNT and I
loved obviously something. I'm sure they'll have something, but I
like it. I like it better than that. So I
think it's kind of cool. Is it something like to
get picked last? Because I know he's always like that.
That's part of what's gonna happen. When we were in Phoenix,
(14:20):
they were supposed to, you know. I remember we had
the water balloon with the guys and then Okora was
the last guy picked and he was like, oh, it
was like, really, come on, would who would be the last?
Who was the last one? Last year was James Harden
was the last? Yeah? That Duran Durant and I think
(14:46):
it left Lebron. There was one way or the other
of it, and you could laugh about it, but I swear, like, say,
the camp said, we we have to stay here an
extra hour, we have to play a pickup basketball game.
If I was the last one picked, I'd be piste
off of the whole four O city. I mean, I'd
be sitting here doing the entire the entire flight. So
I understand it, but it's kind of funny, and I
(15:07):
think it'll be kind of color right and I but
but you know, when I'm an old guy, so I
do kind of miss East versus West. But I know
that that's because I'll ask you once, once the final
rosters come up, would you have our own draft and
see whool to pick last. I tend to be against
change like that that I thought, huh, yeah, that one.
I kind of don't and I think anybody's like nobody's
(15:30):
you know, heck ben On being like, oh, I love
the All Star Game. This, I mean, the altar get
mean so much to me. You can't possibly change whatever
you want when they All Star Game. It sounds fun
that You're great surprised. How would the league trying to
make this or take advantage of the game being so
global now it's no longer just Michael Jordan in Barcelona,
you know, and everybody home I got the drink team
(15:52):
now it's I'm always surprised how they haven't come up
with like USA against the rest of the world. They
trying the old of the game. That, yeah, but it's
different than if you have Yanni's I agree, I have
been I've been an advocate advocate of that for a
(16:12):
long I think that would be a great game in
terms of like globalization of the game. I agree, I
you know, you know, you know, I think the argument
I guess that is is not because you right, because
the tail end of one roster likely that well, I'm
not gonna say that one where the other, Well break
it down. Would some guys get cheated if you're not
(16:34):
one of the best what is it thirty players in
the league and it just doesn't happen to work out
because Americans versus world. Then but that player gets cheated
as entially out of what potentially out of I mean
that's and then you have players like again, look at
Kyrie what would he would he be an international guy
for the US born and he's playing with Team Australia,
(16:57):
but he has a dual citizens shoh, well, I mean
that's that's a good example, because China's a good example.
But I think amongst yourselves, think about it, Janice, Luca,
who else will be on the international team? Jetty telling
(17:18):
you at the at the end of the fifteen at
the end, at the end of the but I'm talking
about I'm talking about who wasn't and will be there.
I agree with you. I think there are loads of
international superstars just telling you you're probably not going to
get your best thirty if you have to take I'll
tell you what world and fifteen. That's all I'm saying.
(17:38):
You're right because Janny's was talking about it the other
day and he put Evan four near and just starting lineup,
and then there's the first guy that gets yeah, everyone
is think about it, Marking And but again you're you're
probably top two MVP candidates right now, maybe Luca Marking
and Ebid beating beating yok, it's the last season were
(18:02):
to me right, So I mean, if you take can
you imagine that line that this is like, are the
international version of our Big Three? Talking about five out
five emb but it's the All Star game. If you're
gonna do an all Star Game. You get twelve guys,
eleven guys. You can't tell me there's not eleven or
twelve international guys that there is they can take on
(18:26):
the NBA. I think not just agreeing with you, I'm
just I think he'll be entertaining. You could have the
association building from a contract. Respective when appearances somebody's gonna
come up here and throw us out of here. They're
probably listening. Do you see this mile on Joe G.
He's in his element, He's in the Union building, so
(18:48):
he's like, oh yeah, he's loving it. That's right, Union
strong baby. Yeah. And not only am I happy about that,
but I'm happy to go into Houston, where, of course
I'm kind of a celebrity in the press room for
being Joe G. My nose preparing for this, I know,
but still they I'm still jeez, it's first name, Joe's
(19:13):
a second. So we're going to Houston the next as
the road trip rolls on Houston and then Oklahoma City,
which I was just saying, is one of my favorite
stops in the league. Why because I okay and as
I definitely myself, one was because we used to go
(19:33):
to that. We're no longer staying, which is a bummer
because we used to go to an Artsi Fartzi hotel,
which I love. I know, John, you're not a You're
not a huge artsy fart's the guy. But the last
one time we went there, they had that one artist
who did the Obama portrait. I think he's an excellent artist.
So I went there the one time. And then also
there's a sonic right across the street. I go there
and go and get a chili cheese dog. All right,
(19:54):
now you're speaking more of my but I but I
think that they run the in the right way. They're
CCT know the fact that they do an invocation at
the beginning of they don't care and I like that too.
But I just talked with our I don't know anybody's position.
I talked to Jason Hillman, who's a big wig and
Organs I don't know, and he'd be right. He does
(20:16):
not like the invocation. And I can understand why why Well,
because again, let me ask you religious, Okay, it's really
what if what if a rabbi came up there and said,
I'm gonna do it really well? No, but but but
it's I don't know man. I like the fact that
they do it. I do too. I like that. I
like I like the fact that they don't bend it.
(20:39):
They said, you know what, we don't care. We're doing
our question. They could do a better job giving me
a spot where I can actually watch the whole court.
A lot of teams were you were You were in
the gandola last night of the Guy I wasn't. I
was in the new name is the Rat House. Thank god.
I was wearing thick shoes because I stepped on the
rat on the trap. What I send you guys video,
(21:01):
You guys never don't check my text. I got to
wear thick shoes because I I sat down on my
on my on my book on my table, and I'm bad.
I was like, oh my god, look and it was
a trap. No way that I said it off. But
it was just a couple of them. I said off
under my table. So, by the way, your rat infested gun.
And I wasn't on the air until like three minutes
(21:23):
to go in the second quarter because we couldn't find
somebody from the Union to come in and hit the
bottom to said reset. The Adventures of the Spanish Broadcast
Medicine Square Garden is the best, in my opinion, is
the best arena in the league to see a game.
It's there's almost no comparison other than Boston. Maybe Boston
(21:43):
might be number two, maybe even one A. But I
love watching a game Master Square Garden. When I worked
here in New York, I loved coming to games. It's
the worst place to work. I don't know how it
is for you, but it's the worst. They are a
pain in the ants. Everything you do is a payber
one bucket least item. When they turned that place down,
I want to be the one pushing the bottom that
(22:05):
and Staples Center it's still. Oh, that's another one, the worst,
especially and I hate to turning my union brothers like that.
People that work there are just they're they're badly trained,
they are, and they're there and they're rude. They're rude.
But I think that's part of the realized that my
booth is in the tenth floor a Microsur's Cairt Garden,
and the elevators don't work on their way down. So
(22:27):
I have to not only go out with the fans,
which is not only go out with the fans when
it's like everybody's leaving, but then I have to wrestle
myself in in the fifth floor and it's the only arena.
What the NBA credential that watch in twenty nine arenas
does not get accepted here, So I have different. So
I have my NBA arena, my Cavs, I d my
(22:48):
my mixed credential, and they will still when they took
me like fifteen minutes to finally find somebody that will
listen to me that I have to get through that
door to get to the team bus, they didn't have
my credential at the table when we walked in. Pat
Farrell had to walk down the tunnel down the ramp
to bring it to me, and the security guards stood
with me the entire time until Pat got to me
(23:10):
and he could see the critics. There wasn't wouldn't even
trust that it was right. He had to. Pat had
to come out. There was a basketball god just because
all the stuff that we got through, that the Knicks
should be on forty one at the end of each
season at home, I can't agree with that. I love
and as growing up, I love the Knicks. Bernard King
was my favorite player. They are the only team currently
right now in the NBA with a losing record at
home and a winning record on the road only team,
(23:32):
so maybe, yeah, I guess you get you're getting your
wishs Oklahoma City. I mean between the fans, it's like
a little hole, like a camera thing and I'm seeting
with Fats in the back. You passed me, I dropped,
I dropped my phone, And I bet the real play
about it? Would you think kind of booth that tones
like I know your days would working with tones and
on the radio, John, you know he's not a fan
(23:54):
of like Miami where people people walk right behind you
bumping bumping. Radio teams do that at your own risks.
The two highest rated shows and I guess Bally's if
they were able to hire, were able to cover, this
would be just following Chones around on the road because
(24:16):
he does whatever he wants. He like, he's like like
a big bear. He just goes where he wants and
does what he wants and asks for what he wants.
And I mean, I'm not saying he's a jerk about it.
He's very nice and polite and cool. But Jones is
just he does exactly whatever he wants. And then the
other show would be to tape Brad Doherty's performance on
(24:37):
the bus ride from the hotel to the arena. The
stories he tells are incredible. Brad. If you could tape Brad,
it would just be off the air. I don't know
what he's usually met the game, so I don't know
what he's like on the air. Off the air, he is.
He's the one of the funniest guys I've ever heard.
He's a happy guy right now with NASCAR about the start.
(24:58):
He doesn't get cheated, he says him. He told his
story the other day, just real quick about you guys
aren't old Calves guys, but there was a guy named
Edgar Jones on the Calves and you probably have never
even heard of that name. He was a journeyman, not
very good, but he had and my buddies and I
loved him growing up because he'd wore number forty four.
(25:21):
He had a big Jerry curl hair and he had
no front teeth, so he looked hilarious and he was hilarious,
and he played hard. Anyway, Brad told his story about
how to make room for Brad. When Brad was drafted
as a rookie, they had to cut Edgar Jones and
He told his story about how they their first Calves
preseason game was in like Alby. It was like an
off site thing, said Edgar Jones. Bought a ticket, booed
(25:47):
the hell out of him every time he touched the ball.
Brad I was saying, I'm this twenty one year old kid,
he said, all of a sudden, I got this this
Jerry cool, Jerry Curl guy with no teeth boone at
me every time. But that's what I'm telling you. He
was Brad has. It's been fun getting no Bread a
little more this season and incorporating him back into the mix.
(26:11):
I mean, it had been a long time since Brad
had been back with the organization and it's great a
lot of different levels and he's a fun human thing
is we should do a show with him about stories
of that, you know, because everybody would Caps team four parts,
everybody the Caps team through the nineties, you know, to
to the Brad, Brad and Nilo and and Mark Price.
(26:34):
I love the reception they all got for Andy jaoh
time half time reception. You know, all those guys got
a really good, really good renewable and Booby Gibson are yeah, yeah, yeah,
And it's good to see Andy and Booby and some
of these old older guys coming back with the sticking
(26:55):
with the family, and I think it's great. And really,
I mean I've had the privilege being around at the
ab A different professional sports. This is rarely. I don't
think people recognize. I mean, even look at our legends.
These are people Austin Campy. I mean we're talking about
the inner circle of legends. They aren't people who are
from Cleveland, right. The love it and this is not common,
(27:18):
you know what I mean. People come back and say
hi and then take off to the freshman organizations they
played for that We're lucky, we really are. And I'm
you know what, they authentically say that like some teams
and it is that is not common in any You
have to be something because without going even making it
at at a legend level, Jodi Fernandez makes a home
(27:39):
on Cleveland even know he's he's coaching now in sacram Right.
And I said to him the other we saw him
from when we played there, I say, hey, what's happens everything?
Like you're making a homie. I don't know homies Cleveland. God,
it's crazy, you know, it's kind of crazy to me. Cool.
But I mean it's I think it's really cool. I
didn't know that that other teams didn't do that. I
kind of thought that was a kind of kind of
a kind of thing. No, I know, I mean, nowhere
(28:01):
I've been for not like this. It doesn't feel like that.
And I think, I mean, I don't know, but I
think because it's obviously not the weather or the city.
I mean, the city is okay, and the weathers sucks.
But I mean I think it's the fans and I
think they feel the love and they never don't feel
that love. And if if you're good for the calves
will love you for you know, clevelanders will love you
(28:22):
forever pretty much in most Cleveland sports. I don't know
if every city is like that, but that is it
is in Cleveland. We will love you forever. It's awesome.

of hot top term. Oh John, I'm telling you, it's
(28:47):

air right now. It wasn't. It's a lighthearted way. It's
like it's like just like one over the Cuckoo's next.
It's just kind of a zay. Yeah. The last time
I listened to you guys record Nation and that's what
that ended it. Yeah, shocked. This one has a let's
